Starting point is 00:00:00 We purchased a burner phone, a phone that a lot of people use for things that are not always legitimate, for us it's a legitimate work purpose. You can give us a call at any stage, leave a message on the phone and we'll clear one a day and yesterday we cleared a message and it came from Hamish. Next new voice message. I have actually interviewed you guys when you're working with Sharon on the Edge. And I would like the opportunity to interview you guys one more time. One question each.
Starting point is 00:00:39 So that was Hamish. And we phoned Hamish to ask him what the one question was he had for both of us. And this was previously on the burner phone. Um, oh, I didn't really, um... Did you not have any questions prepared? Nothing prepared immediately, no. Because you said, I've got a question for each of you, and how you answer is up to you,
Starting point is 00:01:01 which led us to believe there was a question ready to go. Um, I could probably... Or I could give you 24 hours. How's that sound? That'd be perfect. Wow. It's 24 hours, Ben. The time has come.
Starting point is 00:01:19 Do you want to call Hamish back and find out what his question is? He's been thinking. I imagine he's been thinking. I imagine he's been thinking. I hope he's been thinking. Or he might have forgotten that we called him and got on with his life. In that instance, I wouldn't blame him at all. Because, you know, the burner phone's probably quite far down the priority list of most people's days.
Starting point is 00:01:36 It's on our to-do list every day, right? But not on anyone else's. No, we enjoy it though. Let's find out if Hamish has thought about this. The burner phone. You can leave a message for us too if you want to know the burner phone number. It's easier than us. Sorry Hamish, I'm just giving out some details here mate. Be with you in a second. Just text BURNERPHONE to 4487. We'll fire the number back at you. It's easier than us handing out the actual number, isn't it Hamish?
Starting point is 00:02:00 Oh exactly. Welcome back to you. We've recapped everything. Don't you worry about that. We're all up to speed now, Hamish. We're calling you right now. Have you given it any thought overnight, or is it just one of those things you're like, oh. No, well, okay. So I do have, I'm more prepared this time than last time. I do have some questions.
Starting point is 00:02:22 But, yeah, it's kind of one of those things that um radio is definitely one of the things that i've just had a passion for um since i was a kid so it's just kind of any chance i guess i try to jump on it oh well good on you uh it's a way to do it jono um both of us were the same but jono in particular that's all you've wanted to do since you were little, right? I pestered and probably really blurred the lines of stalking Robert Ruckertee, a famous radio host. He works on The Breeze now. Back in the day, I would phone him, Hamish, every morning. I was actually the same, because I'm from Hamilton.
Starting point is 00:02:59 I don't like to tell too many people that. So the person, because I've been into radio since about 11. I'm not sure about you, but I used to sit in on the breeze with Dave Grove and he used to invite me in from about 6.30, 7 o'clock
Starting point is 00:03:18 to about 9. He never put me on air, so I was a bit gutted about that. That's lovely that you learn. It's lovely when people do that. Oh, I don't know if we would be the same, Ben. I've had a few people come in and, you know. Yeah, I mean, you've let people sit in the room next door.
Starting point is 00:03:33 Oh, we come in before you put them on and stuff. But it is lovely because people do help you on the way up and you learn so much by looking up to these people and seeing what they do and wanting to be like them. Yeah, it's quite cool when you meet bigger stars like yourselves. Can we just send out a huge public apology to Grovy there in the breeze? I had Mark Devlin was one I looked up to him as a sports announcer for many years in radio.
Starting point is 00:03:59 He let me. Same thing. We came in and sat through. It was very generous, the whole show. And then at the end, didn't put me on air, which I wasn expecting but at the end he wears i've just and i've done this whole show with this weird kid looking at me the whole time which i thought was brilliant just like just sitting really close to me just watching everything taking down notes he's like it's a bit weird but yeah but no he was great and i was i was a weird kid just sitting there we all we all weird kids
Starting point is 00:04:24 okay so we're hanging out for you one question each, a follow-on question from a previous interview. Yeah. Cool, as well. Who would like to go first? Ben. Okay. I don't know if he'd like to, but I've thrown him under the bus.
Starting point is 00:04:37 Okay. What's your internet history? No, just kidding. Oh, geez. Sorry, just cutting out there a little bit. Okay, so obviously during the pilot episode of Wanna Bend, you were probably the closest to time behind bars. If you were offered a full pardon to any crime of choosing,
Starting point is 00:04:59 what would you commit, if anything at all? This is a great question. Wow, jeez. Thank you for bringing up a low point in my great question. Wow, jeez. Thank you for bringing up a low point in my life again. It seems to be. Yeah, well, I hope I've learnt that particular lesson for doing something that ended up from a TV sketch into a horrible, horrible place.
Starting point is 00:05:19 But he's got a rich criminal history, so he's clearly got a criminal mind. What would be the crime that if you could get a full pardon i wouldn't want to do anything that was you know hurting people hurting people like it'll be some sort of white collar sort of i guess uh you know like a tax evasion or something like they're one of those ones you know like you're like i hadn't paid like in this fictitious scenario i was earning millions and millions of dollars, I hadn't been paying tax, but I've got a full parted on it, so I'm like great Wait, you don't earn millions of dollars
Starting point is 00:05:50 as a radio? No, it's funny that, I hope that's not the reason why you want to get into radio But I can confirm he's not paying tax Yes, that would be my one Do you have any thoughts what you would do? I know this is not your question, Jono.
Starting point is 00:06:06 It would probably be a ram raid. Oh, jeez. Oh, God. Are you sure you're not from Hamilton? No, I would say... To the wig shop. Has he got a different hairstyle every day? Yeah, yeah, ram raid a wig shop.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Yeah, that's good. All right, Jono's question. This is good, this is good. Hamish, if you've thought about these, this is great. Yeah, yeah, Ramrader workshop. Yeah, that's good. All right, Jono's question. This is good, this is good. Hamish, if you've thought about these, this is great. Yeah, okay. Well, like me, you are a lover
Starting point is 00:06:30 in the find things automotive world, namely your prized possession being your HQ Holden. And one of the works of art that I was really impressed with was what you made with Robert on the rock
Starting point is 00:06:42 being the Folden. Oh, yes. Oh, yeah, that was awesome. 15 years ago. So explain that. People don't know what that was, Jono. That was actually really, really cool what you guys did. It was half a Holden and half a Ford, the Folden.
Starting point is 00:06:54 And it was, from memory, it was half a Mustang, Ford Mustang, and half a Kingswood. And it actually functioned like a proper car. Yeah. People far smarter than Robert and myself welded it together and got it structurally safe and sound and road legal. And I think we sold it to the dude from Calendar Girls. Oh, did you?
Starting point is 00:07:14 Yeah. Okay. I saw somewhere that it sold in Christchurch for $67,000 or something like that. Jeez. Where did that money go? Speaking of embezzling and avoiding, where is it?
Starting point is 00:07:28 What qual of crime, mate? That's where it ended up, mate. I think we did put it back into the costs of making it. Yeah, I'd imagine it would have been quite expensive to make. It was. Yeah, it was probably a lot more than $67,000, I think, in the end. But yeah, I don't know where it is now, though.
Starting point is 00:07:42 I think it is still in, so I can't remember who you sold it to, but I think that person sold it to a guy in Christchurch who's now using it as a business vehicle, as a promotional business vehicle. Oh, that's cool. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:55 So my question to you would be, given the budget, what would be the next crazy build that you'd do and why? Well, Ken, we've actually discussed this, but we've never followed it through, and I don't think we'll be able to do it now because he's finished his show this week. We wanted to do carpool karaoke in a car that we put a pool in
Starting point is 00:08:15 and we fly it to Los Angeles. The costs were outrageous. Fly it to Los Angeles, and we sit in a car with James Corden in a pool. We wanted to do an actual carpool with James Corden. Yeah, that's right. We did. We did. I think he might still be able to do that, but just Jono may have to get his name tattooed on his arm.
Starting point is 00:08:33 Or is that the way? James Corden's name. That seems like the only way we can get the attention of celebrities these days. The other thing I was thinking you could do, but I mean the cost's again wild. The Flamborghini, which is half a Ferrari, half a Lamborghini. Oh, a nice name, though, isn't it? But yeah, I mean, who's cutting up a Ferrari?
Starting point is 00:08:51 I'm sorry, Lamborghini. I imagine it would be quite a stiff budget for that one, though. Yeah, the Flamborghini. And I can't see Ferrari or Lamborghini being entirely on board with chopping their cars up. I do actually have a bonus question for the both of you. Okay. So both of you have been joined at the hip basically
Starting point is 00:09:10 for many years now. Being on stations like The Rock, The Edge, The Hits, all playing different genres of music. So what would be your preferred genre? Like what would be your road trip playlist in your car? Listen, I'm a bit of rock
Starting point is 00:09:26 and hip-hop i like both those genres a lot yeah but don't get me wrong mate he loves driving in silence too i do love driving in silence he does deathly silence with the music in my head but mate i can listen where we currently are right now to miley cyrus flowers 22 times a day happily yeah I'll be a bit more poppy than the John but I do like you know it is all sorts and I feel like when you have kids as well that sort of shapes you know where other people in the car or the road trip as well my wife for kids it does shape the place the kids now well they'll grab the phone and they'll play this stuff and sometimes they're introducing me to songs and sometimes I'm like hey here's a new song so that's and then sometimes I'll go like an old man going,
Starting point is 00:10:05 hey, have a listen to this. We're back in the... This is the original of that song. Yeah, yeah. Before it turned into a dance mix. Yeah. Which my dad used to do to me when I was a teenager, and I was like, oh, my God, there was a song before this?
Starting point is 00:10:18 What I love, too, is I'm living vicariously, musically vicariously through my son, Oscar. He started playing drums at age seven. Now he's playing ACDC and Guns N' Roses. And I always dreamed of being able to play a musical instrument. Time's passed for me. You've given up on that dream. I've given up, yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:34 There's no hope for me. But yeah, so being able to do that, I know you're the same with your daughter Indy and her guitar. Yeah, she loves it. Again, she's playing some ACDC at the moment, White Stripes and stuff like that. So yeah. So long story short,
Starting point is 00:10:45 our kids are far cooler than we are. There's no hope for us, but we can make them a little bit. Give them some cred, Ben. Hey, Hamish, it's really nice to talk to you. Thank you for taking the time to think of some questions. They were awesome questions.
Starting point is 00:10:57 No worries, any time. I'm off to Ramrader Wig Shop. Thanks, Hamish. See ya. Thanks, bro. You have a great day. That was awesome, mate.
