The Hits with Jono and Ben's Burner Phone
Here we are Ben
Yeah we're here doing the Burner Phone again
Clearing another message
Who would have thought
It's the 18th of August today
Friday the 18th of August
So cast your mind back to Monday morning
Isn't it a vast difference in how you feel?
It's yeah, yeah, yeah
I definitely feel tighter now
Do you?
Yeah but maybe it's because we've got a weekend of work ahead of us.
Yeah, right.
Like the weekend for me is just like, oh, it'll be fine.
But I'm not like, oh, you know.
Yeah, you're right.
We're just plowing on.
Yeah, it's a plowing weekend.
I feel like Monday morning, we're already not looking forward to that.
You know, because it's not like it's, you know.
A day off.
Yeah, but it'll be fine.
It's, you know, it's fun work.
I'm seeing some things.
It is great work.
It's fun work. Yeah, it'll be fine it's fun work we're emceeing some things it is great work it's fun work
it'll be lots of fun
they've all really
sort of
combusted
in one period
of the year
these emcee gigs
a lot of emceeing
going on
yeah but it'll be good
it'll be good
lots of fun
what's your favourite
thing about emceeing
I actually do
you go along to
and you're lucky enough
to have a small glimpse
into some companies around New Zealand, some organizations,
and sometimes you're like, man, this is a great company.
Yeah, we did one for foodstuffs last week.
Spark have been amazing.
Spark's amazing.
They're incredible.
Every time we go along, they're like, there's some passionate people
that do amazing things and supported by their company.
And as you always say, the opposite of the media industry.
There's no support here.
Everyone's all like, oh, yeah.
Yes, yes.
Backstabbing.
I mean, our company,
NZB, is wonderful,
but in general,
the media industry
is a thing
everyone's out to get you.
Yeah.
Not this company.
Not this company.
Fully supportive.
That's right.
And then we're doing
the house of the year.
Yeah.
A whole bunch of tradies, baby.
Yeah, which is apparently
going to be a fun night.
Yes.
So I'm looking forward to that.
We've been pre-warned
that you might lose the room.
Oh, yes. Yes. Well, because people just want yeah they want yeah do they want to hear to
socialize not listen to us yeah um but that might be a just a we have a bit of a saying to each
other plow on plow on no matter what's happening just plow on yeah yeah because we've had some
shocker emc gigs over the years haven't we've had a couple that have been shockers i mean
2018 yeah that, that was
probably the biggest shocker we had.
I walked into Sir Peter Jackson's
War Memorial, big veterans,
all those statues, I walked into the finger
of one of them, bang, straight in the eye.
Because we were right next to them, but we
didn't really realise that until we left the
stage area to the
darkened room with the black curtains
and you walked straight into the hand.
Talk to the hand.
Well, yeah.
I did and it did not.
Yeah.
So you came back bleeding on stage, which is, yeah.
I've chalked it up as war veteran injury.
Yeah.
I was injured at war.
Yeah.
By another soldier.
In a way you were.
Yeah, in a way you were.
In a way you were in torso.
It's the closest I'll ever get to.
Yeah, you're probably right, actually.
But I think it's all character building stuff.
Of course.
And you do learn.
Because we've done enough of them now, had enough bad ones,
enough ones that have gone all right, that you kind of know your sweet spot.
You learn more from your mistakes than your successes.
That's what they say.
That's what they say.
And it probably is really true.
You do.
Yeah.
The ones that go, oh, okay. Or even just moments. And it probably is really true. You do. Yeah. You know, the ones that go, you know, that go, oh, okay.
Or even just moments, you're like, oh.
Pull it back.
Yeah.
Tidy that up for next time.
Yeah, exactly.
Look at each other, don't we?
Yeah.
But, you know, it's fun.
So we're going to go along and do that tonight.
You do meet some great people as well, I find.
Yeah.
Don't you?
Yeah.
That's awesome.
But then you're always like, let's not linger too long afterwards because you don't want
to be like, oh, they're still here. It's that balance linger too long afterwards because you don't want to be like, oh, they're still here.
It's that balance, I think,
because you don't want to be the people that leave straight away
because everyone's like, oh, those guys.
They turn up and leave.
They leave.
So you want to hang around for a bit and meet people,
but then at the same time you don't want to be like four in the morning
and go, you guys are the best.
You're like, mate, you just drank on our tab all night.
I love Spark.
You know?
Yeah.
But it's fun you want
to say we had a spark event the team came back to my bloody house that's right now here was my issue
i was don't get me wrong it was a great after after party in my tiny hotel room yeah that was
a few years ago wasn't it yeah but then ben you're like oh okay i'm gonna head to bed i was left
entertaining the spot you're an entertaining guy you know but not at three in the night i was like oh jeez we've got to catch a flight in the morning, you're an entertaining guy, you know. But not at three in the morning.
I was like, oh, jeez, we've got to catch a flight in the morning.
Mate, you're an entertaining guy.
I left everyone in safe, capable hands with you.
You love a chat.
You love it.
It was great.
That's why you never invite people back to your hotel room.
You always go to someone else's.
You can pull out when you want.
Anyway, today's Burner phone.
We clear a message every day.
You can text Burner to 4487 if you want to get the number and leave us a voicemail like this wonderful person.
Hey, general men.
I'm keen to know who you're going for in the FIFA Women's World Cup final,
Spain versus England.
I'm staying all the way.
Thanks, Pete.
Okay.
I know you've got a little bit of a bugbear with the Spanish team
and their treatment of Palmerston North, a beloved region in your heart.
Well, there was a news story going around that they left Palmerston North
because they were bored with the things to do.
Them and their families had spent three weeks in Palmerston North and three weeks non-stop.
Granted, the football players, they've got training, they've got games, they've got stuff
to work towards.
You're in the, you're a family member.
You know, you've come along.
Don't get me wrong. You've had a great three to four days in palmy you know you extend that out to a three-week period what are you what are you saying to your soccer playing your football playing
partner beautiful beautiful place look how lucky we are to be here in palmerston north green grass
lovely things to do you know that's just just to, you know, to slow things down. I'm going, can you talk to team management and relocate us?
I had a great time, Parmi.
I actually got stuck.
You got trapped there.
I got stuck there because we went down there to do something with the family
and then, yeah, couldn't get back up because the weather turned.
And, yeah, it ended up being, it went from, I think,
one or two nights into basically five or six or something like that.
It went, yeah, that was a great time.
Well, multiply that by three and that's the Spanish football team.
Yeah.
But, yeah, I mean, they're both incredible teams.
But I think I'll go, yeah, I'll go England.
I think England for the fact that just because I need a reason why
and that Parmi reason, whether that's true or not,
it's probably not even true, but I just need a reason to go for someone.
I don't know.
I do know about the Spanish team that half the team walked away less than a year ago
because they were infighting with the coach.
Yeah, I just learned that as well.
Yeah.
There's a 19-year-old who's won, I think, World Cups through a couple of World Cups
at age group as well.
She came and scored the winning goal off the bench.
She used to be a track star as well.
I saw that.
She wanted to be a 200 metre Olympic sport
yeah what an amazing
sports person that
she is
incredible
if you could pick
I'm going to go
who am I going to
I'm going to go Spain
Spain because I like
Paella
oh yeah
that's nice
have I said Paella
correctly
because I said
is it
now come in here
producer Taylor
she's well she's Italian not Spanish but yeah there or thereabouts is it now come in here producer taylor she's well she's italian not
spanish but yeah yeah yeah there are thereabouts is it payala i have a spanish surname sorry what's
that sorry i have a spanish surname it's lombardi spanish no montoya oh it's montoya yeah of course
um again not spanish but i think it's yeah pa, paella. Paella. Beautiful dish. Lovely. It's awesome.
Annie Pryor in Christchurch, she says paella.
Oh, paella.
Oh, maybe it is paella.
Maybe, yeah.
Someone, let us know on the burner phone for the next time if you're listening to this
because we'd like to know.
I do remember we went to Barcelona.
Remember we went there for work?
Beautiful Barcelona there.
Yeah.
We went there for work.
It was Yeah Football
Wasn't it
We spent 24 hours
Less than 24 hours
In Barcelona
Wait
Did we go to football there
It was a football wasn't it
Nah we were in Portugal
Or maybe we went there
For filming on the way through
Yeah we did go filming
I literally landed in Barcelona
We went and did bull jumping
Not bull
You know
Not bull fighting
Bull jumping
So bulls
Come running towards you
And you have to run towards them head on.
And jump over them.
And jump over them as they're coming towards you.
So the animals are not like, yeah.
They weren't like massive bulls.
Yeah.
Still.
Still, yeah, yeah.
And listen, let's just say I hadn't, my timing was off.
And I got mowed over by a bull.
Yeah.
Two or three times.
Yeah.
Jesus.
No, no.
So yeah, I wouldn't recommend that as well.
And then we got on a plane and left. So it's my only experience in Buffalo and then the mayor came out that's
right the mayor of the town he gave me a little bandana that he tied around my neck like a yeah
yeah that's for sure but yeah but we're not aware I've been there before it's not so funny for that
reason I'm backing okay yeah you're good the mayor tied a cute little bib around my neck.
Hey, thank you very much. I was going to say
if you were going to be good at two sports, Ben,
like
the Spanish goal scorer.
Oh, I see. What would you go?
Oh, is this actual sports that
I have ability for or if I could just
choose? What do you think you would be good at?
Oh, yeah.
Like cricket?
Growing up I did want to play cricket for New Zealand.
That was my goal.
I was cricket crazy, but then I realised it was, I don't know,
it takes up a lot of your time, cricket.
And also that I was okay, but I wasn't not at that.
There was a lot of, you get to that stage where you kind of go,
there's a lot of people out here that are better than me, you know.
Yeah.
And mentally I just didn't have it.
No.
It's a very mental game, cricket.
Top two inches.
And all the sledging coming at you too.
Yeah, that's the thing.
You can do it actually before a sledge.
And I, you know, like.
You're like, you're shit, mate.
And you're like, oh, am I?
I do remember that.
I do remember that.
Yeah.
I remember because I.
Nothing like an unconfident batsman.
I was very unconfident.
You know, like I started batting.
It was great when I was younger.
Then it all just kind of fell apart.
And then you get up there and someone would have a crack at you.
You just go, oh, oh, really?
That's hurting my feelings.
Oh, mate.
Yeah.
I think they would feel terrible if they knew that they hurt your feelings.
Why don't you just go and you're like, oh, really?
Oh, okay.
Do you actually?
Oh.
Yes, that was kind of hurtful.
Okay, so a sport that you think you've never played But you'd love to be good at
Trying to think
It would probably be something
What's a big money sport?
I wouldn't like to do like
UFC and boxing would be too painful I think
I'd like to give
If I had the ability
I'd like to give it a go
Oh yeah
I'd like to give it a go purely because you're like
There's the show
You know, you could be showy
Yeah, you can What about WWE or something, there's the show, you know, you could be showy.
Yeah, you can.
What about WWE or something?
Oh, that would be nice.
You know, but you still can hurt yourself,
but less likely to get blood all over the ring. I mean, the blood over the UFC ring is hard.
It's a hard watch, isn't it?
Okay, yeah, wrestling.
I'll go wrestling.
I'd love to be a great wrestler.
Golf, like I don't play golf,
but that looks like a sport
That you could do
For a long time
And be good at
Make a lot of money
Yeah
Tennis
All the tennis players are awesome
Oh yeah
Yeah
Watching them
They're like
Oh incredible
But a friend of mine
He had
A lot of success in tennis
He ended up playing Wimbledon
Wow
But he's like
It's quite lonely
You know
You hear about the top 10 Top 20 a lot But for the Players out of Wow. But he's like, it's quite lonely. You know, you hear about the top 10, top 20 a lot.
But for the players out of the top 100, he's like, it's a lonely existence.
He's travelling from Motel 6 to Motel 6.
God, it would probably be a bit like that too, wouldn't it?
Yeah.
It's like you're just by yourself and you stay in bleak hotels and you go to a tournament
and you probably lose and you hop on a bus and you do that, you know?
It's quite a lonely time.
Yeah.
Which you don't think about because all we hear about are the top guns, don't you?
It's not a team sport as such, really, is it?
I mean, he could have a doubles partner or a trainer or things like that. That's what he did.
He got very good at doubles.
Yeah.
And they did very well.
So at least you had someone to hang around with in the bleak hotels.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That'll be fun.
Hey, sport, eh?
It's a thing.
Yeah, it is a thing.
