The Hits with Jono and Ben's Burner Phone
Thanks Joel
Sorry we're just having a conversation with Joel in our ears
Welcome along to the Burner Phone
That's what I really do appreciate about your
Average run of the mill talkback host
News presenter on TV as well
Is they are broadcasting
So they're talking as we are now
But they'll have people talking in their ears
As they are also talking
it doesn't happen very often to us uh but when it does geez it really throws you
trying to listen and be also trying to carry on that same conversation so i'll try and do it now
joel can you hear me now so i'll just try and i'll talk and you talk in my ear and i'll see if i can
continue on doing it so welcome along to the on doing it. So welcome along to the Burnerphone.
Welcome along to the Burner.
My wiki was good, thanks.
The Burnerphone podcast.
See, I'm now taking my headphones off just to hear what you're saying.
What we're here today is we clear the voicemail.
So I don't know how that sounded, but he was talking in my ear the whole time.
You know, I think you answered a question to him midway through that too.
It's a real talent. I don, I think you answered a question to him midway through that too. So yeah, which, yeah. It's a real talent.
It really is because you have to, I don't know how you do it.
I don't know how you engage the brain to have your mouth
keep moving and thinking about what's coming out.
Especially for long periods.
So you can get little bits where they'll like take
call of three or something.
You're like, cool, I got that.
You know, if someone's going, now don't go to the call
of three because they're like, what are they trying to say?
We've got a bit of a mix up.
You guys are going to need to, you're like, what? Yeah. to say? We've got a bit of a mix-up. You guys are going to need to, you're like, what?
Real, yeah.
It's a real skill.
And it's something that the audience doesn't even know is happening.
No, no.
If you do a terrible job, they know something's happening.
If you do a good job, it's no idea.
But they just had someone banging it,
reading the bloody Harry Potter book series in the air
while they were doing a news report live from Kabul.
We did a live thing last year where it all went out live on TikTok.
Remember that?
And it was a lot of fun to be part of.
And we had an earpiece in because the director who was doing this live thing
was going to be talking to us from time to time, just a little bit,
which is fine.
There's two of us.
One of us can listen while the other one talks.
But what happened is we somehow got connected to everyone's microphones,
remember, who weren't even part of the thing they were just the next guest coming up so they had been
miked up ready to come on but you could hear everything they were saying and we could hear
lance savalli uh a world-renowned dancer just going off at his friend on his foot on the phone
the face on the phone conversation outside going what you went and saw avatar without me you son
of a like he's like abusing his friend
and we were all like
trying to have a
conversation
and interview someone else
but all you hear is
coming through
the prick went to
Avatar without me
so distracting
and you couldn't
really take the
earpiece out
because in case the
director was going to
say something to us
so you kind of
caught the situation
going wow Lance
is really upset about
not going to Avatar
with his mate
but couldn't reference it
until we had Lance
come up later.
And he's like, how did you know about that?
You're like, oh, mate.
Oh, he heard you abusing him outside.
Yeah, it was a fun time.
That's right.
The Burner phone.
You can leave us a message.
You can text BURNER to 4487.
It'll bounce back the number that you need to call.
But here is today's message.
Hi, Jonathan, Ben.
It's Brianna and Ash.
We saw your car when we were coming through a roundabout,
and I think we scared, like, five people off the road with how loud we were screaming with the windows down.
It's Sunday the 3rd of September, 2023.
It's 12.23pm, and I hope you guys are having a good day,
whatever you fucking get around to do.
Oh, now this is, we met them yesterday in Tauranga at the Ames Games.
We did, yeah.
We were driving from Auckland to Tauranga in a car with our faces on,
which we mentioned on the show today.
Not great if you're wanting to do a runner from a petrol station, Ben,
having a car with your face on it.
Not great if you're needing to do a ram raid as well.
Keep forgetting that we would.
We had our faces on.
People were like, oh, yeah, because it's like,
it's John Owen Ben inside a John Owen Ben car.
Yeah.
Nothing really draws more, you know, you don't like that sort of attention on the road, though,
do you?
You really got to watch your speed.
You're indicating, don't you?
Yes.
Particularly me.
Yeah.
In an unsigned written vehicle, a bloody renegade on the road, but not when it's got your face
on the side.
But yeah, now these people, these two were wonderful.
They'd followed us.
They said, we've followed you for 20 minutes or something.
Yeah.
All the way to Bay Park.
How obvious were we of the fact that this was happening?
We would never be good like criminals, would we?
No.
Because we wouldn't know if we were being tailed by the authorities.
Oh, what the FBI turned up.
We didn't even notice them.
They've been following you for like nine weeks.
Yeah.
So anyway, we met lovely people yesterday. I had a photo with them. It was been following you for like nine weeks. Yeah. So anyway, we met lovely people yesterday.
I had a photo with them.
It was lovely, actually.
It was lovely.
Yeah.
Ames Games, if you don't know what it is, it's just basically 11 and 12-year-olds.
Yeah.
11 and 12-year-olds.
Yeah.
Intermediate age.
Yeah.
Competing in sports in Tauranga and the Mount.
And it is such a great event.
Over 12,000 kids from all around the country.
Even kids come over from the Pacific Islands.
Yeah, I didn't realise that yesterday as well.
No, they had been for the last few years with COVID.
International students as well.
Every sport, yachting, ripper rugby, futsal, basketball, netball.
So many different sports.
Well, hip-hop.
Even hip-hop as well took place.
Okay, so you're an adult.
We do have an advantage physically, mentally, over these children.
What sport do you genuinely think you'd be able to beat those kids at
if I entered you in one?
Yeah, I'm not.
I reckon the kids, yeah.
It's just clipped the other day.
It was quite interesting.
I think they had three professional footballers taking on just like
about probably 40 to 50 kids. And it was like the professional footballers taking on just like about probably 40 to 50 kids.
And it was like the professional footballers taking them on in a full field game.
Well, the highlight I saw was the professional footballers scoring a goal.
But it looked like bees swarming around the ball as the kids are all trying to get.
I'd be worried you'd kick the ball and it would get into a kid's face because they're of the height.
You can't really go too hard on that one. I'll show you that clip afterwards. It's quite funny. I don't know how I would be worried you'd kick the ball and it would get into a kid's face because they're of the height. You can't really go too hard on that one, yeah.
I'll show you that clip afterwards.
It's quite funny.
I don't know how I would be.
Like, I would, you know, even like you'd think,
well, what advantage would you have?
But you were saying there's kids that age, like basketball, for example,
there's kids dunking at age 11 and 12 years old, which is wild.
I can't dunk, you know?
No, you're right.
I don't know if basketball would be the one.
Maybe like, it'd have to be a solo sport of some description so you could get inside the kids' head.
You know, mentally get to them.
Yeah.
Because that's where we've got the advantage.
We can manipulate them.
Yeah.
Oh, you think you're good, do you?
I feel like cricket, because I played a bit of cricket, I might do okay at a certain age,
but even still, I feel like... There'd be some certain age but even still I feel like there'd be some really
good cricketers
yeah
like I might be able
to bowl faster
just because I'm bigger
but not that I'm a fast bowler
but even still
but we're not talking
about taking out a gold
I'm just ending you
in the you know
first second round
of the tournament
maybe I could go
futsal as a goalie
not that I've had
a goal experience
but just because I'm
bigger you know
you know
that's good but maybe I don't know you know, like, you know. That's good.
And wide, but maybe, I don't know.
I want to like badminton.
Oh, yeah.
I like badminton because it's a slower version of tennis.
You know, you can just go.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You don't have to run around too much.
Just have to be consistent and hit the thing back.
Yeah.
The shuttlecock.
The shuttlecock.
I get to say cock as well.
I get to say cock too.
Which is a big plus to that you know i think
that's why a lot of people get into it well yesterday actually we had a bit almost a scandal
ben and it was happening live in the moment on the stage because we hosted the opening ceremony
for the ames games 10 000 kids over two shows here you go here you go here's the footage now
so look at it it's a hundred kids hundred kids taking on three professional sports players
the professional football players are a lot faster than the kids too.
But there's only three of them on a field.
But yeah, look, it's like a scene from like Lord of the Rings or Braveheart
where there's a battle going on here.
But they score a great goal.
There's like 12 goalies in the goal as well.
But then they get a fantastic goal here, over the top, bang.
Oh, they've got a goal
Oh beautiful yeah
I thought they were
Going to strike it in hard
But he just did a gentle
Header over the top
Over the top of the kids
And that's the advantage
You've got the height advantage
But pretty incredible
They've tested it
How many
You know
100 kids
Well then in that instance
Height advantage
Basketball
We would probably
We wouldn't be too bad
At basketball
And that's just purely
On the height advantage
Because we're taller
Yeah
That's looking at the physicality of it
Yeah we had a funny
Because we did the opening ceremony
Two shows
10,000 kids
Eat your heart out Wiggles
Oh yeah
There's probably more audience
Than the Wiggles over a day
It felt like
I felt like frenzy
Because we've been
But far less pay
We've been
You know we're doing the odd
It's the MC job from time to time.
And normally New Zealand crowds, you have to kind of warm them up, you know.
Not these kids.
No.
They were, you come out there and go, hey, we're John O'Meara.
It didn't matter what you said.
They were just ready to go.
But you had a great idea that we'd get giant inflatable balls and have a race.
So we'd put the balls on the crowd and they'd have the first balls back.
Yeah.
And I was like, okay, we're about to get have first balls back to the thing and I was like okay we're about
to get our balls out
and I was thinking
and I wasn't doing
the innuendo
but then we're like
okay then we're going
to put our ball out
you're going to
you made it
you made it weird
but it wasn't meant
to be weird
no
we're going to
throw our balls
out into the audience
and you were like
afterwards
you're like
oh
there's no other
way to say it
no
it was like
yeah
because we were
going to have
a Jono one
and a Ben one so you're like well my you know as soon as you go to say it. No, it was like, yeah. Because we were going to have a Jono one and a Ben one.
So you're like, well, my boy and I.
As soon as you go to say it, you're like, oh.
Anyway, that was fun.
Hey, well, thank you for those two people following us.
I don't think anyone's ever followed us beyond sort of a kilometre bed.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And although, yeah, that would probably be it.
That would probably be congratulations.
It looked cool.
Someone actually put it on their Instagram.
They were sitting at the back of the thing of the Ames games.
The Bulls, they said John and Ben got their Bulls out.
And I'm just showing you right now on the phone.
It looked cool, eh?
It did look cool, yeah.
The big massive Bulls getting moved from the crowd,
like kind of crowd surfing the Bulls were back and forward.
I said, it looked good.
Bloody big crowd, mate.
I know.
We'll never play to an audience like that again.
I never to that level, too, of people wanting to.
We've done the Music Awards, and it's probably not as many people as that.
But they didn't want you.
That was no frenzy when we came out.
4,000 people, trendy-looking people, looking at you with disdain at the Music Awards.
Not there.
Not the kids.
They don't know disdain just yet.
No, they just get excited, so that's what we loved about it.
So enjoy the Ames Games.
