Starting point is 00:00:00 The Hits with Jono and Ben's Burnaphone now a thing croctober i saw something advertised the other day with crocs with croctober because we approached crocs multiple times i think for the last four years we've harassed crocs saying let's get croctober off the ground well i mean it's their brand to do what they want yeah and they don't need us they don't find without us they've got justin bieber and other people wearing their crocs so well that was our dream to wear crocs and we were going to raise we we went in with different angles first was just like we want to do croctober who can wear crocs and we were going to raise, we went in with different angles. First was just like, we want to do Croctober, who can wear Crocs for the month and they didn't want to borrow it. Year two, we're like,
Starting point is 00:00:50 okay, we went back with the same plan. Year three, we then chipped away at a charity angle. We were like, let's raise money for the nurses and doctors
Starting point is 00:00:57 who wear Crocs. Yeah. Hey, it didn't work out, it's all right, maybe it wasn't the right timing or whatever it is, but hey, it's, you know,
Starting point is 00:01:03 so what's Soctober? Soctober is one we can do. Yeah. Yeah. is that what you said no oct sober so if you want to do a sober month like dry july i see yeah maybe that would work better because it wasn't there's other ones and they're feb what's feb fast another one is that the one sober is or it's yeah that's that's being sober as well obviously all of these months you've been sober yeah i don't have it you could do no vemba oh yeah do you want to drink no yeah yeah uh but there's a month for everything now in bed i always thought it was a good one uh so you're clean shaven on the first of december and then by christmas day you've got a beard like santa oh yeah you know to see me geez your bed growth would have to really accelerate. Like I probably,
Starting point is 00:01:46 25 days, yeah. Doesn't give me enough time. No, but some people, 25 days is more than enough for a good healthy bed. Fannuary was another popular one too,
Starting point is 00:01:55 for fans of air conditioning and things like that. Yeah. It's a big one. But it's good to have these months to raise awareness. That's good, yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:04 There's a month for everything. There's also a day for everything. Multiple days for everything as well, isn't it? Yeah. You think of something, it's probably got a day. No, and sometimes you're like, why is this actually a day? Talk like a pirate, but it's a day. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Well, welcome along. This is the Burner phone. We'd like to clear a message from a Burner phone that we purchased. If you'd like to leave us a message, just text burner to 4487. It actually bounces the number back. Here is today's one. Hi, John and Ben. Rod here from Blue Light. I'm sure you remember Blue Light. Just so you
Starting point is 00:02:34 know, this is 40th year anniversary of Blue Light. Really keen to hear about your guys' background and memories you may have of Blue Light Discos. Have a great day. Cheers, guys. Ben was looking very worried when it was Rod from the Blue Light Company. Just going,
Starting point is 00:02:50 where have you shone that blue light? I've watched the last CSI back in the day. Blue Light Disco! Yeah, Blue Light Disco! It was a disco the police put on, wasn't it? Was that what it was? I thought it was. Maybe you might be right. I remember going along to the Blue Light Disco
Starting point is 00:03:05 Geez you'd have a blast At a disco back in the day Wouldn't you? Real distinctive smell For a smoke machine Smoke machine Every time we used A smoke machine
Starting point is 00:03:14 For something I'm like It just takes you back Automatically to a disco Sort of thing Like how many Carcinogenic chemicals Are in the smoke
Starting point is 00:03:20 Let's not think about it It smells It is A very distinctive odor And gee You would dance the night away wouldn't you
Starting point is 00:03:26 I was it was a lot of fun oh yeah as a kid getting jiggy with it you know all the bangers all the lights
Starting point is 00:03:32 and you know and the blue yeah it was a lot of fun you know the kids you know at various ages sometimes you'd be a little scared
Starting point is 00:03:38 to dance you know like you know the guys on one side sometimes or the girls you know yeah it always warms up
Starting point is 00:03:43 eventually though doesn't it yeah it's a lot of fun 40 years of the blue light disco though oh it's You know, the guys on one side sometimes and the girls the other. Yeah, it always warms up eventually though, doesn't it? Yeah, it does. Yeah, it's a lot of fun. 40 years of the blue light disco though. Wow. Okay, what's been your best, because I know we've spoken multiple times
Starting point is 00:03:53 about what you wore to your school ball, which was your Looney Tunes duvet that you got your mum to make into a three-piece suit. Yeah. What's been your best dance disco experience? Dance disco experience? Your best dance disco experience? Dance disco experience? Your best dance disco experience. I remember my school ball, we ended up at Denny's at like 6 in the morning.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Oh, from the school ball? School ball. Yeah. Having breakfast at Denny's. Open 24 hours. Some of the Denny's, aren't they? And the weekends and stuff. That was enjoyable.
Starting point is 00:04:22 You know, my school ball was tarnished by my Looney Tunes outfit. At the time or just afterwards? Oh, just since. At the time, I didn't think it was,
Starting point is 00:04:31 you know, it definitely was out there but I didn't think it was like the horror show that I now reflect back on. I'm like, oh dear God,
Starting point is 00:04:39 what was I thinking? Why did no one stop me along the way? I probably wouldn't have been stopped. I probably would have gone, I'm doing my own thing.
Starting point is 00:04:45 Yeah, no, there's many people who loved you who should have said something. I remember the year before I had not quite, it wasn't Looney Tunes, but I had a bandana combo the year before, a blue bandana. My mum had a long coat, a long blue coat. So I got some material matching bandana as well. Again, I think I was blue pants blue waistcoat and I remember taking uh I think it was my nana's my granddad's or my nana's old like a walking sit cane thing type thing as well not the full you know like one that's like the with the little
Starting point is 00:05:17 curvature at the top but just like it took that along as well because we had it in the house I was like yeah I'm one of those like I'm some sort of like notorious big or something like a pubescent pimp honestly i did i think yeah yeah did you lose the cane i mean your granddad wouldn't have been happy if you lost that cane shocking like shocking again a very shocking i think the waistcoat wasn't blue the waistcoat was red white and green it was a bob Marley-like one that I had. So again, I put it together. I put it together with limited budget. Listen, I'm sure there's many that look back on their school ball photos.
Starting point is 00:05:57 There's a photo I sent you once of me, and I look like a vampire. I look like I've become dressed as a vampire from the 1920s. Do you know, looking back now, I think there was the lady I always met, the young girl I was going to take to the disco that year, to the school ball. I don't think she ended up coming with me. I think I got... But she knew what I was wearing and now it all makes sense. Now I'm like,
Starting point is 00:06:17 this is probably why. Taylor Swift's on her eras too. Was this your Kane era that she wasn't a fan of? Yeah, I remember Going yeah this one you gotta wear this We're going together and stuff like that I've got a walking cane you can have a mobility scooter And then I remember her
Starting point is 00:06:33 Very last minute going with someone else And now I look back And I'm like well that's clearly why I don't think I ever Went with anyone to the ball Why? But, yeah. I don't think I ever went with anyone to the ball. Oh, right. There was a group of, there was a friend. You didn't have to. No.
Starting point is 00:06:51 Some people would ask other people, you know. A friend of mine was with a particular girl, and she's like, oh, my friends want to go. So then all her friends kind of, they got lumped with us bloody duds. So we kind of went in a group scenario. Yeah, that was either a group scenario yeah that was either group scenario or you kind of go oh it's just it's taking such and such yeah but yeah and i had one of those occasions kane boy kane boy is taking sarah to the ball and it didn't quite
Starting point is 00:07:15 and so did she let you did she say hey i'm now gonna go with someone else yeah i think it was a day or two before she was like hey you know to her credit i think she did and you know and that was fair enough and it wasn't like it was we're in two before she was like, hey, you know, took a credit, I think she did, you know, and that was fair enough. And it wasn't like it was we were in a long relationship or anything before. We were just kind of like, oh, we'll go together. And then, oh, no, we're not. And Kane, you know, like I hobbled my way in there. You would have like a million dollars, mate.
Starting point is 00:07:40 Trust me. What the hell? You look back. I say that to my kids all the time. I'm like, you've got to look back and you've got to go, do what was i thinking but you don't think that at the time and you should yeah um that's i mean that's one great bit of advice that you could give someone is don't do anything now that you think you will regret in 20 years but you don't want people to like not put themselves out there and you know i'm talking about really stupid stuff don't do stuff
Starting point is 00:08:02 that in 20 years you're gonna be like what was what was I thinking? Now it's kind of fun. I embraced my individuality back then and did that. Now we've got some stuff to talk about. But yeah, you're right. It wasn't like it was getting behind a wheel drunk or anything like that.
Starting point is 00:08:13 That's stupid, you know, things like that. Yeah, I'll tell you what's stupid. A year after the cane incident, another girl saying yes to going to you in a Looney Tunes suit. A Looney Tunes outfit and had,
Starting point is 00:08:24 and had, I think, 20 bird cut in a Looney Tunes suit. A Looney Tunes outfit and had, and had I think 20 bird cut from a Looney Tunes duvet attached to the long, like the elbow length gloves that she was wearing. So your mum and mate. Just to tie us in together. I think her mum might've done, put that on her. Oh, that's nice. Just to tie us in together, you know,
Starting point is 00:08:41 like David and Victoria Beckham back in the day, they used to have their matching outfits. We just sort of, you know, tied ourselves in together you know like David and Victoria Beckham back in the day they used to have their matching outfits we just sort of you know tied ourselves in together you know fashion is
Starting point is 00:08:50 such a funny thing a cringy thing I'm sure even like David and Victoria Beckham would make up photos and go
Starting point is 00:08:57 oh he says that in his documentary he's like I think they got married and it was like these
Starting point is 00:09:01 purple he's like what was I doing these purple matching suits and it was and he was just like what why did we wear the purple what were we thinking yeah uh yeah he had a photo shoot for their thing and that's i'll show you that now i think it was to do with
Starting point is 00:09:14 their wedding they probably had multiple outfits on their um yeah you do maybe that was to do with the wedding but he was just like dear god were we doing? I've committed many fashion crimes. See, they was very, very just, just purple. But at the time? He's super fashionable. He can kind of pull it off. Looking back to him, he's got a shaved head. He's got long hair and a ponytail. He's got hair that's kind of like a stylish mullet.
Starting point is 00:09:40 He kind of pulls it off, eh? He's just a fashionable dude. He would have pulled off A Looney Tunes suit Yeah He probably would have Back in the day He definitely would have Well happy 40th
Starting point is 00:09:51 To the Blue Light Disco What a wonderful Wonderful service And things for the The youth Of Aotearoa And if you want to Leave us a message
Starting point is 00:09:58 For the Burnaphone The Hits With Jono and Ben's Burnaphone
