The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
We finally got him on the show, which is great.
Yes, Taylor Montoya's husband, Marcelo Montoya.
How are you?
Been good, boys. How are you?
It's been such a great season.
I mean, a year now, you guys, you've been in New Zealand,
but playing for the Warriors for longer.
But it must be so good to be here now
and for the team to be going so well.
Yeah, nah, for sure.
Obviously, New Zealand's a good place,
and me and Taylor enjoying it. So it's been a good year, man. Yeah, nah, for sure. Obviously, New Zealand's a good place and me and Tay
enjoying it.
So,
it's been a good year,
man.
Like,
yeah,
like,
we're tracking all right.
Hopefully,
we can get along this weekend.
Honest,
give us your honest thoughts.
Both you,
Taylor,
as well.
You can come in here as well
when you're like,
oh,
God,
we've got to move to New Zealand.
You're coming from a big,
you're coming from the big smoke.
You're bringing your big ideas
over here from Sydney.
From Sydney,
yeah.
What did you initially think, Tay?
You could be honest. Taylor could probably
be more honest than Marcelo.
When he first told me, I was like,
oh, that's cool, but we weren't engaged
or anything. So I was like, this might
be just a thing for him to do.
And then five days later, he proposed.
I said, oh, well,
now I'm going.
No, I love it. I love it.
Thanks, Marce, for the opportunity.
And you're genuinely enjoying it here, Marcello.
Yeah, I'm loving it, mate.
It's been a good change for me.
And I think, like what Tay was saying,
like when we initially said we were coming over,
it was a bit daunting for her because it's always hard moving to a new country
and you don't know what you're going to do, you know,
like especially for her with her work.
But for me, it was always I had my job and I knew what I was doing to do, you know, like especially for her with her work. But for me,
it was always,
I had my job
and I knew what I was doing.
But yeah,
she kind of found her seat
straight away.
Hey, well,
she's doing a good job.
Yeah.
She's doing a good job.
We'll give her
a good performance review.
Great to have her.
A couple of areas
of improvement,
hey Ben?
Oh, they're always working.
You know what,
it's like one show at a time.
Always got to have
that improvement.
Now,
our other concern
for you, Marcello, which involves the have that improvement. Now, our other concern for you, Marcelo,
which involves the show as well.
Now, producer Joel, he's a day one Warriors fan.
Yeah, somehow he's got your number,
which I'm like, oh, dear God,
why has he got Marcelo Montoya's number?
But anyway.
Is he coming on too strong?
Do you need us to just tell him to pump the brakes a bit?
No, he's sweet, man.
He's all right.
You know, Joel, he's quite humble.
He's quite also. But he's a legend. No, he's sweet, man. He's all good. You know, Joel, he's quite humble. He's quite us.
He's a legend.
No, he's a legend.
He's great.
When he got invited to the Warriors Awards Dinner on Monday night,
I think that was you going to Disneyland, wasn't it, Joel?
Yeah, definitely.
Well, if Marcelo wasn't given this opportunity with the Warriors,
he wouldn't have met one of his top five New Zealand mates,
being myself as well.
Now he's in the top five.
Top five?
Who are the other four?
There'd be four of the Warriors,
wouldn't there?
Big Bunty R4.
So he's got a new top five friend.
Yeah, he's just sort of put himself in.
Finals this weekend,
so exciting.
Playing the Panthers
Saturday night,
six o'clock New Zealand time.
I mean, they're a blimmin' good team.
How are we feeling
going into this week?
Yeah, it's going to be
a massive challenge for us. I mean, they're tracking really good team. How are we feeling going into this week? Yeah, it's going to be a massive challenge for us.
I mean, they're tracking really, really well.
And I think for us, it's going to, I guess, see where we're at as a team as well.
So, yeah, no, we're very excited.
I'm very excited for myself.
It's my first final series.
So I'm looking forward to it.
I know I have a better way to do it than the reigning premiers.
Now, you played in the Bulldogs and you've, you know,
spent a few years playing rugby league
in the NRL. Have you ever felt
support like this from fans?
It's different. It's something
that you can't really
put into words. When you run out,
especially when you're playing at Mount Smart and they black
it out, they turn all the lights off and you run out
it's something special. So every time
we get the opportunity to play at home, it's something
that I soak up because it's something I've So every time we get the opportunity to play at home, it's something that I soak up
because it's something that I've never experienced before.
And even playing away,
like we had a few games that we played in Australia.
We versed Parramatta and Gold Coast.
Their home fans were booing them and cheering us on.
So that's pretty cool as well.
And the Up the Waz, I mean, that has just taken off.
It feels like, I mean, it's said in New Zealand's parliament.
It's been said on TV.
It's been said like everywhere. Yeah, mate, it's said in New Zealand's parliament. It's been said on TV. It's been said everywhere.
Yeah, mate.
It's taken off the show.
I remember I seen that basketball coach.
He said it as well.
Oh, Steve Kerr, yeah, for the coaches, the Warriors in America,
the basketball team and the American team.
Yeah, which I thought was pretty cool.
To get someone like that saying it.
But, mate, it's everywhere you go.
Even when you're around the club,
everyone's kind of saying it as well.
So, no, it's pretty cool.
It's a good vibe.
Well, Marcelo, lovely to have you on the show.
Congratulations on an amazing season, mate.
I'm so sorry Joel has to punish you now over text.
And can I also say, we have been interviewing Warriors.
It's taken you five weeks to get your husband on, Taylor.
Yeah.
I didn't want to look like I was taking shortcuts, you know?
Oh, fair enough.
Because then imagine, oh, is Taylor really sending emails?
Like, is she really booking people in?
Have you found her professional through this booking process, Marcelo?
Yeah, no, she messaged me on her phone,
and then she called me on the work phone.
Just call me on her phone then, you know?
Take it easy.
I don't come to your work and tell you how to run it straight.
I love your work, Marcelo.
Good luck this weekend and up the wires.
Thanks, fellas.
Have a great day.
Thanks for having me on.
