Tom Sainsbury, you'll know him as the really funny guy who does some great videos on social media
but he's, well, he's doing a horror movie right now.
Can you see that?
I think he's following us.
Hey birdie.
I know you think I'm crazy.
But I'm telling you, there's something out there.
It's called Loop Track, it looks frightening and tom sainsbury's with us
in the studio hi guys thanks for having me is this a well you've come in as a character i know i
thought you know radio is a visual medium so why don't i come in why don't i come in a costume with
my backpack you're so good at characters people know and love you for your characters that you do
on instagram social media and stuff but now you've've made a movie which is quite different from, say,
Boomer Dad, the character you do.
Absolutely.
So I've got a film called Loop Track coming out,
and it is a psychological horror.
And I just play the one character, and it's very kind of all in the eyes.
My character's on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
It's full of paranoia, but it's got a big, thrilling horror climax.
From what I've gathered from the trailer,
you think someone or something is following you
and everyone's like, don't be silly.
You got it.
So I'm there kind of by myself,
but these other kind of trampers kind of connect with me
and we're kind of walking together
and they kind of end up having to look after me.
But guys, I have just come from the bush.
Can I just give you a gift while...
Yeah, that's right.
You don't strike me as a walk through the bush,
stay in a hut sort of guy, but that's, you know, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm wrong about you. Yeah, that's right. You don't strike me as a walk through the bush, stay in a hut sort of guy, but that's,
you know, maybe I'm wrong.
Maybe I'm wrong about you.
Yeah, watch the first two minutes.
You're like, this guy needs, you know, up his fitness.
Oh, what is this?
Oh, it's just some sort of scroggin'.
I've got some scroggin' left over from the...
To the terrace bin.
There we go.
We've got some...
This is great.
Thank you.
There we go, yeah.
Well, the seeds are good for keto, but I have picked out all of the chocolate.
Oh, yeah, I've done that one.
We do this at home. You buy a whole thing and then people go, we need more of that. You're like, well, but I have picked out all of the chocolate. Oh, yeah, I've done that one. We do this at home.
You buy a whole thing, and then people go, we need more of that.
You're like, well, no, there's 90% of it left.
You just picked out the ones you like.
The weird green ones that always get left over the time.
Always get left over.
Yeah.
Well, listen, out of all the movie merch I've been given over the years,
this is great.
This is great.
Great idea.
Was it fun to create?
Because obviously you do these fun characters on social
media but to do something like it's quite scary and quite dark and it does look very frightening
was that fun yeah it was a honestly guys it was a dream come true I absolutely loved it to extend my
acting chops to be quite dramatic but in saying that okay so I went for a really kind of heavy
drama horror but then we had a screening so it screened in the New Zealand Film Festival earlier
this year and there's a
scene where I'm running from my life in my underwear
and the audience just erupted into laughter, so I'm like
okay, so maybe this is a comedy as well
and I've kind of revisited it and though
it is a horror, it's
laugh, people are laughing throughout
And so you're like, this is meant to be
this is meant to be horrifying
Yeah, that was my first reaction and then I just like
after the next audience did the same, same,
I'm like, okay, I've made a comedy without realising it.
Now the idea, I understand, for loop track came from a picture?
So what was, well, strangely, I was out on the West Coast beaches
and I was hanging on the sand dunes and there was a guy,
I could see a guy in the distance and I could kind of make out his features
and stuff and he was looking directly at me and there was kind of a sense that he could be really sinister or something like that but I
couldn't really read his facial expressions I was like this is quite a haunting kind of when you
can't when someone's kind of in your proximity you're alone but you can't really read what their
intentions are but then he just went and chased his dog off the dunes and kind of went onto the
beach so he was just a lovely innocent guy but little did he realize he inspired an entire film
and then there's also the horror for me of going on these hikes is that you do get trapped in small talk.
Like for me, like being trapped with someone who just talks and talks and talks and talks is the true horror for me.
And that happens in the film.
Oh, mate.
Did you know what he did?
Tony Streak.
Lovely Tony Streak.
He ended up running with her husband, Matt.
Who you don't really know, but you ended up running together because you were staying in the same sort of area.
Yeah.
We went running and I just followed him.
I was like, ah, we've made a connection here.
And I just kept talking, talking.
On a run.
On a run.
Basically, because I just interviewed him for like seven Ks.
And then at the end of it, I was like, hey, mate, that was fun.
He's like, yeah, probably just a little bit too much talking.
Fair enough. And it's also like to talk probably just a little bit too much talking for my liking. Fair enough.
And it's also like to talk and run at the same time is tricky for some.
Obviously not for you.
You've got the stamina.
So I haven't been running again with Matt, surprisingly.
Yeah.
It looks very good.
And it's released nationwide November 2nd.
It's also going to be playing in a couple of festivals overseas, right?
Sydney and LA, which is awesome.
Yep, we've had the LA one and the Sydney one already.
Oh, okay. Well, it has played in a couple of festivals. It's played over there and LA, which is awesome. Yep, we've had the LA one and the Sydney one already. Oh, okay, well it has played a couple of festivals here, which is great.
How were they received? Good call. So America kind of
treated it like a real popcorn movie, which I'm totally here for. People kind of coming in late,
chatting, checking their phones, going in to get popcorn, leaving, I was like, I hate this film, coming back with
a huge flagon of beer and then laughing at all the jokes and stuff like that.
And the comedy kind of did land over in america obviously they don't understand the term bush when you talk about
what is that they also don't use the term track they use trails so they're like i lost them with
the title but otherwise they would otherwise they loved it tom sainsbury uh loop track uh
it's in cinemas right now
