Starting point is 00:00:00 Now Tom Sainsbury, comedian, is with us in the studio. He's got a second series of his podcast, Small Town Scandal. Welcome, Tom. Thanks for having me. What do you say to welcome? Welcome. Thank you for welcoming me. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:00:11 I don't say welcome in my day-to-day. No. Just only on the radio show. Yeah. And sometimes you welcome people, even though they've come to the studio. You're welcome to the studio. You clap like you've welcomed them again. They're like, oh, I just walked through before you.
Starting point is 00:00:23 You clapped me the first time. Have you've welcomed them again. They're like, oh, I just walked through before you. You clapped me the first time. Have you felt welcomed? Every time I'm in the proximity of this booth, I feel welcomed. That's good. We've talked to you many, many times over the last couple of years. I know. Thank you, guys. No, we love it.
Starting point is 00:00:35 We love it, mate. You're easy to chat to, Tom. And we learn something new about you every single time. So from Matamata, just learned some new intel off air that your siblings your brothers are what? geneticists so works with
Starting point is 00:00:47 genetics big scientist guy and a town councillor and my sister is a nurse so we learn more and more so many layers
Starting point is 00:00:53 to Tom Sainsbury she's a renal nurse so she does like where the blood comes out of the body and goes back in when your kidneys aren't
Starting point is 00:00:59 working properly and that for me because I pass out even with a tiny scratch so if you guys were injured in any way I'd pass out in the corner right now.
Starting point is 00:01:06 Also, there's a series two podcast. Let's bring it back to that. Yes, go to it. Small Town Scandal Season 2. Second season as well. This is something that you write. You also play all the characters of. And it's like a murder mystery set.
Starting point is 00:01:18 And obviously the small town, as the name would suggest. Yes, you've got it. So it was kind of like the original one was both inspired by my love of kind of true crime podcasts and just the kind of formula of that like i've listened to so many i'm like god you could really take the piss out of this that's where it comes from and it's very kind of like my other side of my um is all the kind of comedy of the small town characters like i just love taking you know holding up a mirror to small town new zealand and the people that live in new zealand so it's, you know, I play 40 characters in this one, all different voices, huge range.
Starting point is 00:01:49 And some of them halfway through the character, you're like, why did I make this decision for this voice? When you've got this, there's one with that gravelly voice like this, you're like, oh, this is bad. I was going to say, doing 40 different voices, you must start around about 25, 26, you must be like, how much more have I got in my arsenal
Starting point is 00:02:05 exactly exactly like that and then you just kind of you can manage like three a day to record because I just do one character at a time and then my wonderful
Starting point is 00:02:12 Adam my editor kind of puts it all together after the third one on a day my brain just turns to custard and I can't kind of focus I'm like who is who am I
Starting point is 00:02:20 you won an award yeah yes I won best fiction podcast that's great congratulations did you guys win an award yeah um yes i won best fiction podcast that's great congratulations did you guys win an award no no mate our podcast we're we i don't think we've made the top hundred yeah we don't really crack the podcast game for some reason we like to say you know we
Starting point is 00:02:36 concentrate on the right the radio that's what it's at you know it's real radio that's what we love it's the way to go so people say the podcast world is the future. Terrestrial radio is the way to go. That's what people say. The podcast world is the future. Nuh-uh. We're sticking here, baby. Nuh-uh. You like your chat surrounded by commercials and songs. This is the place for you. Tom Sainsbury with us.
Starting point is 00:02:57 Now, Ben, you've got a fun game that we're going to play. I've taken some sort of murder mystery riddles from the internet. Oh, great. Okay, now these are the ones that I've come up with. Jono and I will play the parts. There's not 40. Well, you can play the different characters. I'll just narrate it.
Starting point is 00:03:11 Oh, God, okay. There's not 40 different roles. But at the end of it, we'll throw it to you, and you can see if you can work out. Who's the? Yeah, what's happened in this thing. This may be terrible. Okay, this is the hospital mystery, all right?
Starting point is 00:03:25 So a man rushed into the hospital where his wife was a patient and cried out loud with tears in his eyes. Who shot her? The man was stopped by the police who asked him, All right, where were you last night? Okay. The man then told them, I was spending the night at a friend's place
Starting point is 00:03:46 I called to check on me wife The maid answered the call Oh god I should have pre-read this And she told me wife had been taken to hospital The man said as soon as he heard the news He came running to the hospital But after hearing this
Starting point is 00:04:00 The police immediately arrested him Why? Oh my god I'm like that meme with that woman Hearing this, the police immediately arrested him. Why? Oh, my God. I'm like that meme with that woman with all these triangles floating around her head. It is quite hard because when I found out the answer to this, I was like, oh, it's something that happened very early on in the place. Okay, so he's gone into hospital, said, who shot her? Yeah. And then the police has come up.
Starting point is 00:04:22 Did they arrest her because he hadn't been told that she'd been shot? Yes. Yeah. Who shot her? And then the police has come up. Did they arrest her because he hadn't been told that she'd been shot? Yes! Yes! As soon as he entered the hospital we cried out, who shot her?
Starting point is 00:04:30 But he hadn't been told he was shot. That's a rookie mistake he made, wasn't it? I mean, what happened to
Starting point is 00:04:38 her? Unusual thing to come up with. Who shot her? Yeah, right. Oh, Tom Sainsbury, thank you so much for coming in, mate. You can catch our Small Town Scandal series to wherever you get your podcasts,
Starting point is 00:04:50 but get them on iHeartRadio.
