Starting point is 00:00:00 The Hits with the Jono and Ben podcast. Thanks to Challenge, putting the service back into service stations. Brand new album out today, which is very exciting. And LAB join us in the studio right now. Mihoro, Stu and Joel from LAB, welcome. Kia ora. Nice to have you guys here. First new album, what, in two years for LAB? Because the first five were like, you guys, five years. They were pretty much one a year for five years, right? Yeah, back to back. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:00:26 It was a lot of work. I can imagine. There wouldn't be many bands releasing an album annually. No, no, no, not at all. Except for Troy Kingy. Oh, yeah. Because he's got a plan of doing 10 and 10. That's prolific.
Starting point is 00:00:38 We only had a plan of doing three when we first wrote on our first pizza box of goals. And it just carried on from there. So you had a pizza box of goals, did you? did you yeah yeah what else is on the list of goals well there was like we all wanted a house each we all wanted to um just make sure that this was our work and and our career and make sure our families were good and we achieved all of that so you've got the houses yeah we all got good on you that's awesome do you keep the pizza box or did someone put in the recycling no i feel like it's since yeah it's like some crazy fans probably got it like the album's now it's got obviously casanova on it the new single but i was saying a story i think it was might have been stew you're saying but back in the day the song
Starting point is 00:01:17 casanova because it was an r b group you guys you fell in love with it as kids going out and about back in the 90s yeah like listening to that driving around in New Zealand. That's pretty cool that you guys got to do this song. Yeah, yeah. Well, and this song's got, the version that we do is actually from a guy in America, a black country dude. And he sort of brought that version out. And me and Brad really loved it.
Starting point is 00:01:42 Like we'd get home from tour and we'd just slam it on with our kids and go swimming with them while it's all jamming. So it was good to actually get that energy out. Is and Brad really loved it we'd get home from tour and we'd just slam it on with our kids go swimming with them while it's all jamming so it was good to actually get that energy out is it Levert? yeah Levert Levert's the original artist
Starting point is 00:01:51 have you heard from Levert? yeah so we haven't heard from yeah but the producer we sort of cross interview oh cool
Starting point is 00:01:59 and they were happy with your version? yeah it was cool yeah it was these two older dudes sitting there going yeah the boys down south have done a great job of that.
Starting point is 00:02:06 I was like, oh, sweet. It must be quite nerve-wracking as a group, you know, to play a song to, you know, the people that, you know, played it before you. That's kind of nerve-wracking. Yeah, for sure, yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:16 Now you are getting covered yourselves. We spoke to a guy, Cyril in Australia, a DJ. I don't know if you know the song Stumbling In. Oh, yeah. And he's going to cover one of, actually, I don't know, he's supposed to ask permission. Well he was looking into it.
Starting point is 00:02:28 You're like, oh is he? Hang on a minute. I called you guys Lamp anyway too. I love this song from Lamp. I'm looking at doing something for that. Oh cool. So listen, if you hear a remix of any of your songs just pretend to be surprised jonah and ben signed it off so the guys would be fine with that they're all good have you heard your music in strange locations we're like wow they're playing us over here
Starting point is 00:02:55 because you you know you've been around the world now i remember the first time uh like when when you released album three and in the air was the big thing um i remember walking through the warehouse and uh yeah hearing in the air that that tripped me out so we're in the warehouse man the winds the winds line that's my song of course playing electric avenue on uh this weekend in christchurch which is i've never been before we're going along so it looks huge it looks massive yeah it's uh it's our fourth time playing Electric Avenue and super stoked
