Starting point is 00:00:00 This John O'Bien podcast, hey that's us, brought to you by HelloFresh, the experts and tastes that Kiwis love. Hey, lovely to see you. It's so great that you're coming to New Zealand, an audience with Graham Norton. It's going to be incredible. Well, I've never been to New Zealand before. I managed to stagger to Australia in about 1988 or something. So, but my first trip to New zealand so i'm really looking forward to it well new zealand's about like we're stuck in 1988 so you're probably you're probably fine because it is an evening with graham norton is the name of it which is going to be flash you're talking about the show and all those great things but what's an evening like away from the cameras at home graham norton on the couch what's going on on? I mean, so little, I mean, I can't tell you.
Starting point is 00:00:48 I don't know what you're expecting. I mean, there's probably a bottle of white wine knocking around and there's a big telly. That's about it really. And occasionally, I mean, do you know what? I've become better about going out. I saw, because you know that thing, I, you know, I live inondon i should go out all the time
Starting point is 00:01:05 yeah and i'm very bad about it but i'm getting better at kind of going okay because normally the way i think about london is there's so many things not to do but i've got a little bit better about going out so occasionally i might go to the theater or a restaurant or something what do you know about New Zealand? And is there something in particular that you'd like to do or see when you're here? The thing I know best about New Zealand is that you produce very nice Sauvignon Blanc. That's really, that news has reached me. So hopefully I'll be drinking a lot of that. What else do I want to do? Milford Sound um what else I want to do Milford Sound I'd like to
Starting point is 00:01:46 go to Milford Sound and isn't there some island called Waiheke or something yeah lovely wine over there as well hey you can you can do a winery tour of New Zealand that sounds good to me because what I mean you know I'm doing a tour but also I am on holiday like I think I'm doing 15 dates and we're going to be there for six weeks only more in between in between australia and new zealand so we will have a chance to to see the sites hopefully we wanted to get you into the new zealand uh you know way of thinking and just see if you know what these products are by the name uh in new zealand let's start with ginger nuts biscuits oh yeah well done oh yeah ginger nuts there weiscuits. Oh, yeah. Well done. Oh, yeah. Ginger nuts.
Starting point is 00:02:25 There we go. Okay. We got some. Okay. Do you know pineapple lumps? No. Okay. Pineapple what?
Starting point is 00:02:30 Pineapple lumps. L-U-M-P-S. They sound horrible. They're actually delicious. They're pineapple like sort of confectionery candy. Yeah. I mean, that was a very short meeting. What do we call it? call hokey pokey i mean it sounds like a game it does yeah hokey pokey
Starting point is 00:02:55 is it a breakfast cereal oh no it's ice cream it's ice cream new zealand ice cream and finally i'm not sure this one says graham norton rose rose rose rose i'm not i'm not sure i know what that is it's delicious okay well i'm keeping that one for myself so here we go just getting you into the new zealand way of thinking now you've got a book you're doing the tour and everything does this mean that you're slowly phasing yourself out of the the chat show that we all know and love no no no no like uh i don't know if there was a guy in Britain a while ago called Dale Winton, and he had a mantra, don't quit the hit. So I'm very aware that the chat show is the reason for everything else in my
Starting point is 00:03:37 life. It's the reason I've got wine knocking around in New Zealand. It's why I write books. It's how I'm able to do a tour in New Zealand. So, yeah, the chat show is kind of that's my my that's my core business to sound quite serious but I have I've cut it down a bit I only I do it now from uh kind of the end of September to the end of February so it's kind of I'm on for half the year off for half the year which means I can you know do things like this do this tour and travel around.
Starting point is 00:04:06 Well, because it must feel like you've almost met everyone from New Zealand because they've all been on your red chair pretty much. I mean, it's like military service or something. There's nothing to do with it. It does seem... I was on it. I got to be on it. I told a story about putting eye drops in my grandfather's eye. It turned out to be super glue. I got to tell on it. I told a story about my grand, putting eye drops in my grandfather's eye turned out to be super glue.
Starting point is 00:04:27 I got to tell the story, but then Seth MacFarlane from Family Guy still flipped me. So I feel like that was a win and a loss. Wow. I mean. He doesn't remember it. Yeah, it was the greatest moment of my life. What I'm thinking is like, no, this is nuts.
Starting point is 00:04:41 I'm talking to two people from New Zealand and one of them has been on the red chair that's right yeah hey we thought just like because you there might be some stories that you haven't heard from new zealand we wanted to find new zealand's best story record a couple and then maybe send them to you or get you back over zoom before you arrive and you can choose new zealand's best story you haven't heard and maybe they get a night out at your show i'm happy happy to do that absolutely yeah we have to best story you haven't heard, and maybe they get a night out at your show. I'm happy, happy to do that.
Starting point is 00:05:07 Absolutely. You have to find some that haven't been on the red chair. Yeah. Good luck. Well, Megan, Megan hasn't been. I haven't. It'll be children telling stories. Amazing.
Starting point is 00:05:23 Well, we're so looking forward to having you down under. Hey, and if you need some tour guides for these uh winery excursions we're your people yeah thank you very much one of you can be the driver oh yeah paper scissors rock on that one hey lovely to see you graham we can't wait to have you in new zealand all right take care guys enjoy the rest of your show bye
