Starting point is 00:00:00 Give a little time for the child within you. Don't be afraid to be young and free. Under the locks and throw away the keys and take off your shoes and sucks and run you. It's Jordan Jesse Go. I am Jesse Thorne America's Radio Sweetheart. Jordan Morris Boy Detective. I'm an image that I've shared with you, Jordan, that I just want to get some feedback from you. Because I feel like I have been kind of, I've been feeling a little adrift in my life.
Starting point is 00:00:28 Purposeless. Yeah, just listless. Right. Useless. Unwanted. Sure. An appendix to your family. Indeed.
Starting point is 00:00:37 Yes. And I think this could be it. Uh-huh. So I sent you this image. Oh, okay. So you found your purpose. I'm not sure. Okay.
Starting point is 00:00:48 You may have. I'm not 100%. I'm not 100%. I've texted me something. I have not opened the text. This is an image that I found on a popular e-commerce website. Okay. So the first thing I'm going to ask you to do is describe the image.
Starting point is 00:01:02 Okay. Well, I'll open it. Yeah. I'll open the text. Once you've done that, I think we could play a quick guessing game of what product was this image promoting. Okay. So, and this is a baffling image. I will say something I like about it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:21 It doesn't appear to be baffling because it was made from AI. This is a human-made nightmare image. Yeah. And I think we can all applaud that. You know what? There's human nightmareists out there and they deserve work. We can't sweep away all their jobs like NAFTA did with auto workers. Sure.
Starting point is 00:01:42 I don't know. I don't know how economies work. Neither do I. So, okay, so the image is hard to tell, but it would appear to be that this is at some sort of like children's birthday party or children's event. we have a young kid in a tiger costume and face paint. He is about four or five, I think. I don't know. I have a hard time telling how old kids are.
Starting point is 00:02:07 Jordan, I was about to say this kid looks like he's maybe four or five years old. Thank you. Well, he looks like a tiger. Sure. But yes, his face has been painted as a tiger, kind of like carnival style. He is in a tiger costume, and he is sitting next to an adult, woman who appears to be maybe late 20s. She is in a kind of a classic princess or queen outfit.
Starting point is 00:02:34 She's making what could be like tiger claws with her hands. Yeah, she's making tiger claws. Her facial expression suggests that she's just going, rah. Yeah. And in her lap is a giant three ring binder stuffed, stuffed to the brim. It looks like she has with her, she has brought with her all of the instructions on how to repair the, like, a radiator system in a commercial building. Yeah. And then the text at the bottom, which some of it is obscured, not obscured, but hard to read because they have not changed the color of this text.
Starting point is 00:03:17 And some of it blends in with the background. it just says tell children about mysterious stories tell children about mysterious stories so before we evaluate a message I mean has there ever been a better message for our time so I want to take the opportunity in a moment I'm going to bring our guest into the conversation maybe we can evaluate with our guest whether that's
Starting point is 00:03:41 a good life mission for me but I'm going to give you the opportunity to play the guessing game on a popular e-commerce website. For what product was this a promotional image? Oh, boy. Amazing question. So it is... Thanks.
Starting point is 00:04:01 I hosted an entire interview show about interviewing. So, okay, I'm going to just, I'm going to talk, just say what's in my head and maybe, can I talk this out a little bit, kind of who wants to be a millionaire style? The turnaround, season two, coming later this year, Craig Ferguson said he would be on it. Wow. Go ahead. Okay. So it could be for the costumes.
Starting point is 00:04:20 It could be for the kids' face paint. It could be for the binders. Do the binders come filled with pre-filled with mysterious stories? I don't know. Okay. So I'm going to guess, okay. Yeah. I'm going to guess you were planning a party for one of your kids.
Starting point is 00:04:40 I don't know when your kid's birthday are. I'm sorry. Some uncle you are. I'm a terrible grandfather. I'm an awful grandfather. Wow, this is a really weird time to find out that you're my dad. Yeah. Go ahead.
Starting point is 00:04:54 Bomb drop. Okay, I'm going to say one of your kids is having a birthday. You're going to throw a themed bash for one of these kids. And you have sent off for some kind of like kids party kit that includes costumes, some decorations. So I think if you like would search up, you know, 10-year-old party kit, you would get, and this is an image that would just accompany so many Chinese products that aren't, that don't look like the photo and aren't related to each other, really.
Starting point is 00:05:34 Jordan? Yes. You're astonishingly close. Oh, my God. You're far too close given the information that you had. Oh, yeah, I love to shop. My daughter, Grace's 15th birthday is approaching. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:05:48 Fifteen already. We searched for 15th birthday tiaras. Kinseñera tiaras is the answer. If you're wondering, it's tiaras to wear to your kinsayanos. Because she wanted to wear a tiara on her birthday. I don't know the backstory on that. Okay. She's not interested in princesses.
Starting point is 00:06:06 Okay. But she wanted to wear a tiara, I think, is a joke. Mm-hmm. But that led to actually needing to do it. And then she searched Amazon. Look, I'll just say it. It's Amazon. She searched Amazon for 15th birthday tiaras and found this image that says,
Starting point is 00:06:24 Tell children about mysterious stories. Wow. There's no context for it. So this is, I think it's what it's, maybe my guess is the thinking behind the post. Uh-huh. And I'm assuming a human thought about this is like, here are things you can do while you're wearing the tiara. Uh-huh. Like you could, you know, bring an air of whimsy and magic to, you know, every time you tell a children about mysterious stories.
Starting point is 00:06:53 What would be like, would you tell them about like the X-Files? Sure, you had to describe X-Files. The kids haven't seen X-Files. So you could just describe, you're saying, Jordan. Yeah. Not only could you, I was thinking you'd just tell the kids like, oh, there's this great show. It was about two agents, Molder and Scully, and they had kind of a will-they-won't-they thing, go. going on.
Starting point is 00:07:14 Right. But then eventually you became about like the smoking man, a guy called the smoking man. Sure. Something goes up with Mulder's sister. I didn't watch a ton of it. And mostly, but it was like, Mulder thought there was, aliens were real, but also other kinds of guys. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:28 There'd be a vampire episode every now and then. Scully was pretty, zombie pizza guy. Scully was pretty skeptical. And it would come on at night and you'd just leave it on because it came on after some other Fox shows that you watched. You'd watch it. And you'd be like, all right.
Starting point is 00:07:41 You know. Yeah. It was sophisticated for the time. Sure. That's what I pictured telling my child. No, I would just say the episodes. You would just say the episodes and pretend that you thought of them. These are my mysterious stories.
Starting point is 00:07:52 Okay. Yeah. Because I want kids to think I'm cool. I do that, but with episodes of news radio. Sure. Tell us another tale of your friends from the radio station. Well, well, well, you'll say. Let's talk to what?
Starting point is 00:08:05 Let's introduce our guest and we can find out whether she has a mission in life, how she's doing at it, whether she thinks I should have a mission in life and whether my mission in life should be to tell children about mysterious stories. She's a stand-up comic. She's a two-time Emmy nominee. Yeah, I read the bio, Jordan.
Starting point is 00:08:24 Hell yeah. I need to update it. Did they resend your Emmy nominations? I got one more. Well, okay, all right. Three? Three. Loser across the board.
Starting point is 00:08:34 The third one was for local news, though. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Ellery Smith. Ellery Smith is our guest. Hi, thanks for having me. Big X-Files fan. Can I see that picture? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:43 I think this is actually, I swear to God, this is comedian Jenny Zagrino. You think that's comedian Jenny Zagrinno? I think so. I think this is an advertisement that she did. Really? As a joke, or did she, you know, hey. It looks a lot like her. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:08:57 When you're out in Hollywood, sometimes you've got to do stuff to pay the bills. Oh, my gosh, a commercial gig is all in a US dream of. Well, I was going to say maybe this, she was posing for, like, stock photos. Oh. Because that, I feel like that's. That happens. Yeah. There was a thing where Amy Poo.
Starting point is 00:09:10 Polar had done that early in her career and people found them. Yeah, there's a... I had a friend that did that and ended up on every kind of flyer you can imagine. Oh, yeah. What I like about Amy Polar having done it is anyone who's familiar with Amy Poehler's early work, it's like all the stock photos must have been for insane maniac. Right. The one kind of character she played on the UCB TV show was insane.
Starting point is 00:09:34 I mean, many... They could have gotten her on a set and been like act normal. I don't know. No? She couldn't continue it. She had those eyebrows. That's true. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:09:43 It took until well into the 21st century before anyone realized that she was capable of acting normal on screen. That was the great innovation of Parks and Recreation, was what if we had Amy Polar at normal? Yeah. Did you end up going with this tiara? It's beautiful, by the way. Wonderful tiara, Grace would be lucky to have it.
Starting point is 00:10:01 I think my wife did purchase this tier for grace. Really? That exact one? Yeah. Well, I think what happened is... She was so taken by the picture. I recently had a birthday When I say recently Two, three months ago
Starting point is 00:10:12 And I mean You had a more recent birthday Jordan That's true Happy birthday guys Thank you so much Ellery have you ever Ever been fishing
Starting point is 00:10:21 Ellery have you ever had a birthday? Every once in a while You know what? I'll partake Happy birthday Hey thank you I'm right in the middle Christian
Starting point is 00:10:29 Happy birthday Thank you Hey listener Go fuck yourself Yeah I didn't say it Yeah You thought I was gonna say Happy birthday
Starting point is 00:10:37 To the listener If somebody who's listening, it will be their birthday when they're listening to this. So that'll sing extra. Hey, listener, happy Independence Day at best. Okay, so on my birthday, my mom sent me a crown to wear. Okay. Oh, she did. And so I did wear the crown during the birthday celebrations.
Starting point is 00:10:54 And it's a fine crown. It's not a... Gold, plastic, paper? Metal. Metal. Metal. Wow. Not precious metal.
Starting point is 00:11:04 Sure, but aluminum. Standard metal, but... American. steel. Would that be heavy? It probably would. Well, heavy is the crown that's on the head. Of course. Heavy is the crown that sits up top the head.
Starting point is 00:11:17 Heavy is the crown on the lightest of heads. I'm known for my light head. He's known for his light. Well, you have a hat on, but otherwise I bet. But I wore the crown during my birthday. And it is a really
Starting point is 00:11:33 nice crown. And I offered it to Grace when I heard about this thing that they were going on Amazon and looking at these mysterious stories things, I offered it to my daughter. I said, you can wear my crown. Because I'm not wearing, I don't wear it every. She doesn't want your crown. She wants a tiara. She wants a tiara. This is teenagers for you. That is teenagers for you. We have a perfectly good crown at home, Jordan. Perfectly good crown at home. Is it masculine? No, I would say it's gender neutral. Okay. Nice neutral crown. I don't feel, I don't feel obliged to,
Starting point is 00:12:07 gender this crown. A nice beige crown. It's probably begging for it. Oh, really? Yeah, depending on what it looks like. Yeah. I wanted to ask you about something that is pinned on your Insta. Is pinned on my Instagram, sure.
Starting point is 00:12:21 You have one of your stand-up comedy clips, which are very funny. I suggest people watch them and they go see you do stand-up comedy. You do a joke about Nashville, and I wanted to... It's not pinned. I just posted it recently. Oh, okay. Yeah. Well, Nashville, Tennessee, the music city?
Starting point is 00:12:39 The music city. Let me tell you something about this clip. You got to pin it. You got to pin this thing. It has like no life. Pin it. Ellery. That's because it's not pinned.
Starting point is 00:12:49 I'm hearing you should pin this clip. It's lightly offensive to the city of Nashville, which I love and I've had a very fun time there. I realize that I talked on this show about going to Nashville, but I never talked about what happened to me in Nashville. Nothing huge. You had a bachelorette party? Well, that's what the joke's about. Yeah, tell us about your experience. Not to set you up like Byron Allen or something.
Starting point is 00:13:11 You don't have to tell the joke. I won't tell the joke. Okay, Comics Unleashed. I would love to do your show. And Byron Allen, we would love to be you. Byron would be, you just set us up for things. She's like, so, Jessie, I hear you were shopping for crowns. Jordan, I hear you're looking for a son.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Byron, I won't do it. You guys would be amazing as Byron Allen on that. They should let you do it next. They should tell you let us do it next. We're really rich. Let's put that in it. He's probably a really rich. He's like a billionaire. From what?
Starting point is 00:13:41 A literal, from syndicated television. And blood diamonds. And blood diamonds. We don't know like RuPaul is into fracking. Is RuPaul into fracking? Yes. Like as a sex thing? No, no.
Starting point is 00:13:53 Well, I can't speak to that. When you said into that's what. I just mean he's invested in the, he's like has oil fracker or whatever they're called. Frackers. Crackers. He's got, he bought a few fracks. He did. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:06 You know what they say about RuPaul. This guy frecks. This guy frax. It was discourse in the community. So in Nashville, Tennessee, you visited Nashville, Tennessee. I have visited Nashville, Tennessee. I've been a few times both for comedy and driving across the country. And so the joke is kind of a lie.
Starting point is 00:14:24 It's just about bachelor's up parties. And I am morally opposed, I think, to bachelor's parties. And it's against my political alignment. And so I make a joke about Bachelor of Parties. parties and I just use Nashville because it's it's ground zero. That's where you would go for a bachelor. That's where you would go. What is your, I want to hear more about why, why you're opposed to them.
Starting point is 00:14:45 Uh, well, you don't like, I mean, you don't like penis crowns? Yeah. Well, what's funny is it's a, it's a longer bit. Um, that was like a very small part of it, but I do have a part of the joke where I say, you know, I've already met my plastic penis budget for the year. Why am I going out of pocket to subsidize yours? Sure. Uh-huh. You're not, you don't have, uh, PSA. A penis savings account. That was good.
Starting point is 00:15:12 That was very funny, Jesse. Yeah, I don't mind them. I love getting my friends together. I just find it to be such an anthropological journey. I don't drink, so they're a little testy for me. That makes it complicated. It makes it complicated. Although lately I've been flirting with drinking again.
Starting point is 00:15:30 And maybe it's just to deal with these batch of up parties. And then also it's the strangest. array of people that you'll ever really like another part of the joke is the worst part about a bachelor's party is meeting your friends best friends from college sure because those are evil people we when i had my bachelor party our friend bucky sinister who's been a guest on this program bucky came to the bachelor party strangely not a contested on ruPaul's drag race i love that name you would think bucky is a is a great guy and is definitely my real life friend who i really like but like he was not invited to the wedding.
Starting point is 00:16:07 Like we did not have room for, not like don't come to our wedding. We don't want you there. Just didn't, medium wedding, but just a lot of family members. And Bucky came to the Bachelor Party in part because he knew about strip clubs and we didn't. And I'm not saying he's like a strip club maniac.
Starting point is 00:16:25 It's just he used to be a professional bouncer. So he just knows how that kind of thing works in a way that no one I know. does. And so he is a perfect example of just like a guy that's there. The basis for Patrick Swayze's character in Roadhouse, right? Yeah, was Bucking Sennister?
Starting point is 00:16:43 Yeah, absolutely. Originally there was a lot more performance poetry in Roadhouse. Unless ripping someone's throat out. But yeah, it does bring together an unusual group of people. But there's also a specific tone to the Bachelorette party
Starting point is 00:16:59 relative to the Bachelor Party. Like bachelor parties often seem to just be like dudes acting like assholes. It's degeneracy. But I would say it's, and I think like the, and I would love to explore this in part of the joke, but I don't really know how to, is like all sorts of polite performance fall away during the Bachelor, Bachelorette party, and things that would never be okay in your day-to-day life become acceptable.
Starting point is 00:17:26 Okay. So like at the Bachelorette Party, there's like a, there's this app called Splitwise. Okay. Do you guys know Splitwise? No. It's this app where you, it's essentially like for groups of people going on vacation and you input every cost that you might have. So like Uber's or meals or whatever. And it's such a no man's land where this girl who I know her in real life, she's married to a billionaire.
Starting point is 00:17:47 She put in a one pack of Eminem's that she ate by herself into the splitwise. Can I ask, is she married to Byron Allen? I wish. Is she not even married? Trisha Allen. And I still can't get on that goddamn show. No, and I'm like, you are, you're literally splitting this one pack of M&Ms among 16 women. Everybody needs to get at least three M&Ms for that to make sense.
Starting point is 00:18:11 That's just fairness. I should get to, how many best, how many, get to? I should get to, I should be allowed to. You should get to. To get it back. Yeah. Like as a little treat? Like as a little treat.
Starting point is 00:18:22 That's your M&M. Yes. And it's a lot of like. Would you split the cost of the liability amongst 16 women actually? And a lot of us would really enjoy. that. That's something that we're all getting, you know. She seems nice, though. She's a very, I enjoy,
Starting point is 00:18:37 I still enjoy her, you know, but that's what I mean is you turn into a, like, the bachelor party. You think it was the Bachelor, so you don't think that woman asks people to pay for her M&Ms on a day-to-day basis, but I do think under the... Just the parameters of a Bachelorette party, like, soils the person.
Starting point is 00:18:55 It poisons the soul. Bachelorette parties, I feel can be quite barrenuous. Roke. Like when I had a Bachelor party, we had a softball game, we went to some strip clubs, not a normal part of my life. But those are fun things. It was fun. Yeah. And that was that.
Starting point is 00:19:11 Right? And I don't drink, so nobody got dangerously hammered. Like everybody else pretty much was drinking. Maybe, well, Bucky doesn't drink. I would say a couple of those strippers had a great fastball. That's true. That would be awesome. That's true. Some of them playing in that new pro-softball league.
Starting point is 00:19:27 Right, right. Shirts versus skins. If you know what I mean. You're talking about stripping. No. Oh, God, no. Oh, my God. Is that what people thought I meant? I'm so sorry, no.
Starting point is 00:19:37 Oh, no. But I feel like... Christa, cut that out. And, you know, sometimes there's like a go-to-a-cabin or go on a golf weekend type of thing for Bachelor parties. Those seem very polite. I did one with paintball. That's fun. But, like...
Starting point is 00:19:52 Contained. I feel like Bachelorette parties get complicated. Like, they involve theme hats. Oh, not just theme hats. Theme nights. You get a little breakdown of what you should be packing. Oh. You get a three-ring binder. You do get a three-ring binder.
Starting point is 00:20:09 You get a Google Doc. Each night broken down by theme. So like when you say theme, it's like, you know, like Western. Cocktail Cabana or. Yeah. Western is a theme. And then you also get these.
Starting point is 00:20:23 Not everybody has Western. Well, there's a lot of shopping involved for the bachelor party. Because the multi-day thing, like my wife went to her. friend Jessica's Bachelor party I remember and it was like three or four days. You should anticipate three days and then most people come the Thursday before. Do you think that people were
Starting point is 00:20:41 filleting male strippers? I don't even ask any questions. I almost hope they were. Yeah. And that's the other thing is like there's no, it's not even, it's not even like debauchess, I don't know what happened at that bachelor party, but it's like, it's not even like, ooh, debauchess, well, a little bit it is, but it's nothing like crazy. It's mostly just high octane competitive girlhood
Starting point is 00:21:02 and then also like your friends, best friends from college, have sort of like indecipherable politics. It's just trying to read the lay of the land. And you'll be like waiting through that all weekend. You're just trying to figure out at which point at what point you can relax because nobody's going to say anything racist.
Starting point is 00:21:21 Right. And they're always or even like... And it's like that thing of like, well, you suggested we go to a drag show, but also it doesn't seem like you've had a vaccine. How are you that? How do these? It's like whatever, the things that they believe sort of sound like a mad lip where it really is just like, like I went to this batch, well, I don't want to give you too many details because she might listen to this.
Starting point is 00:21:44 But my friend. Let's just call her Mrs. Allen. Mrs. Byron Allen. Her friends are all nurses, very conservative nurses. And the whole weekend they kept talking about drug seeking behavior. Okay. And like how everybody in the ER. lying. Right. Oh. And I was like, I'm never going to visit a fucking hospital again.
Starting point is 00:22:04 You know what? We're just there to get drugs. I went to the fucking hospital, not that long ago, seeking drugs. And it, for a legitimate reason, just to get fucked up and listen to jazz. Even if he wasn't, I think it's fine. Yeah. I had not been to the emergency room in quite a long time. And I had not, I get migraine headaches and I had not been for migraine headaches in decades. I had not been since I was a kid. and I just had this migraine that would not fucking go away and I was feeling so bad and I wasn't like crying and vomiting so I don't want people to worry about me but my my neurologist is on maternity leave and so I was like I can't there's I don't you can't like get someone to squeeze you in you know what I mean like unless it's your person that you know and you like know the PA and you can
Starting point is 00:22:53 like call the desk and you know what I mean they're not going to squeeze you in and and So in the end, I was like, I'm going to go to this urgent care that says they have neurology. They have ergotamine, which is one of the treatments for migraines. And like I called the desk. They said, yeah, we do infusions for migraine. I went there. I waited. The doctor saw me.
Starting point is 00:23:16 He's like, no, we don't do that. You got to go to the ER. So I was like, am I really going to go to the ER? And I went to the ER. And you know what? So hard to seek drugs at the ER. So hard to seek drugs. So hard.
Starting point is 00:23:28 I was there for so long. And in the end, they barely gave me anything. They just gave me an anti-inflammatory. They didn't even give me the ergot. Really? And the ergoat doesn't give you fucked up or anything. Are you still inflamed, though? Well, I got slightly less inflamed.
Starting point is 00:23:43 They were like, here's two. I mean, I'm inflamed right now. Because I'm sick of their bullshit. Sure. Okay. This is part of Jesse's weekly segment. I'm inflamed right now. That's a pretty good one.
Starting point is 00:23:53 It's kind of his new rules. What, Ellery, what of the competitive girlhood activities would you consider your strengths and what would you consider your relative deficits? My weaknesses? Well, I am a little bit of a tough customer when it comes
Starting point is 00:24:08 to like going out late, loud noises. I'm fucking, I'm really good at Pilates. I'm very good. Sensitive sensitivity. Sensory I do have sensory sensitivities. I hate screaming. Yeah, loud music, not really much. You hate screaming? That seems real bad for Bachelorette. It's so
Starting point is 00:24:24 hard. It seems so central. to what they're doing now. And what's funny is that, like, on stage, it's fine. Like, I have dealt with many a Bachelorette party as a comedian. And, like, typically I'm like, we have a rapport. Like, I'm loving what's going on. It's very back and forth, and I feel very in control of the situation. And when I am on a Bachelorette party, I feel so, I feel like a little, depending on the group.
Starting point is 00:24:46 But for the most part, I feel like maybe a little bit of drift. And it is a marathon sprint for me. And also, I'm like, are you guys going to stay married? Yeah. Promise me you'll stay married. Because right now you're sucking off a stripper. Okay. There's a lot of cheating that goes on to matchamperny's.
Starting point is 00:25:01 Cheating. There's a lot of cheating. There's a lot of micro cheating. It's, uh, how would you, what would you characterize micro cheating? Getting somebody else's number. If you had seen this man's dick, you would know it was macro cheating. That's macro cheating. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:16 Yeah. My, uh, my Nashville experience, so I was going to do a Comic-Con. The Comic-Con was poorly attended. Oh, no. But Nashville has a rep—so, like, for people don't know, there's—I feel like there's two reputations of Nashville. Three reputations of Nashville. One is the Music City, the kind of classic. This is where songwriters go to write songs for country records.
Starting point is 00:25:39 And that's very much still the case. One is that it's, like, one of the relatively inexpensive cities that, like, cool people have moved to because they can't afford to live in Portland or whatever. Sure. You know, like Louisville also has that reputation to some extent. But then also that it has this weird, nightmarish, Las Vegas-like strip of gargantuan four-story, like, country singer-owned. But at least they're like a little bit cuter, I feel, than Las Vegas. It's like live music. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:13 So I was looking forward to seeing this. I've always wanted to see this. Like, you know, I like to bask in some insanity every now and then I'm in a world full of little weeners. It's nice to like see people like party. To finally see some macro cheating. To finally see some macro cheating, you know. So yeah, I was excited to see this thing. And like I, you know, first thing I did, I put down my, put down my stuff at the
Starting point is 00:26:38 Hampton Inn, headed out to the strip. Oh, I got the hot chicken. The hot chicken was really good. Really delivered. And then I went to that thing. And yeah, I liked all the like, like, Bachelorette party energy. I thought it was really fun to be in the middle of it. I did hate see.
Starting point is 00:26:53 T-shirts with the word Wiifi on it. I think Wifi's my moist. Wifi is my moist. I just don't. The Bachelorette. It hits the ear. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:04 Like the, and I think that's the other thing. I'm talking about the Misan C. The Mizzen. I like the tank tops with another man's face on it that you have to bring home and then they're a kitchen rag in my house for three years. You have to wear a tank top with the groom's face with. So you have like a tank top with a guy named Hunter's face on it or something? And wouldn't you believe?
Starting point is 00:27:23 Exactly that. Is it? Did I get the name right? It's pretty close. Okay. And it's like, and also. It's Gunner. It's Gunner.
Starting point is 00:27:30 It's a good name. Yeah. Yeah. There's like stickers everywhere with the groom's face on it. You get like, there's, it's a horrible pun industry. So they're sucking these dicks in front of 20 of the groom? Yeah. See, I think you're hung up on this.
Starting point is 00:27:42 See, yeah, last pickle. Last fling before the ring. That's a big one. Christian has put up some one cowboy forever. Some Bachelorette party t-shirts we could buy on. line. What's the last pickle? Maybe I don't get that. I think you can figure it out. Oh, pickle, like a dick. It's the last dick. Thank you. Oh, I thought it was like a pickle themed bachelor's party, which could be cool.
Starting point is 00:28:05 I thought a fun thing to do at a bachelorette party would be to play pickle. Pickle ball. You know, it's like, no, it's like where base runners stuck between bases and going back and forth. That's fun. That's fun. Hey, I would love. Can't do any micro cheating during that. We used to call that base runners also. They'll figure it out. I would love like a bachelor's dodge ball or like a kickball. Like I think softball is such a fun thing to do. That would be too to someone who has to like take a bunch of photos in a couple of days to just whack them in the face with one of those big red balls. Well, I think there's probably some softball games at some of the more powerful.
Starting point is 00:28:41 Okay. Powerfully built bachelor's parties. So yeah, I enjoyed my time on the strip other than having to see the word wifie. You know about the t-shirt that my wife has that says wifie, right? No. I bought my wife a t-shirt that says hifie-wifie. Well, tell him what to wear it around me. It's my moist.
Starting point is 00:28:59 It's my moist. It's my moist. I think clouds are scary. Tie-hard is a Christmas movie. But, yeah, I was excited about the like every bar has live music thing. That, to me, that, like, sounded so much fun. Like, I'm, like, I don't love country music, but I'm like, hey, I want to order a whiskey while somebody sings, all my exes live in Texas. Like how fun does that sound?
Starting point is 00:29:21 That seems fun. And I shouldn't mention to Ellery, this is your first time on the show, sort of no sacred cows on this show. Like, we kind of aren't afraid to go there, okay? So like, saying I hate country music. So, I love country music. I didn't say I hated country music.
Starting point is 00:29:36 I say it's not my, I don't know a lot about it. Sorry if you love moist. The clouds are funny. The moist defenders. So I was excited about it. I didn't, I was going to the bars and I just didn't recognize. I think it was all like modern country music.
Starting point is 00:29:51 And it wasn't the one Shibuzi song. Was not the one Shibuzi? Oh, you know, I did hear the Shibuzi. You know what's a great song? It's a good song. Modern country music, I have a theory that 9-11 ruined country music. Really? And I...
Starting point is 00:30:05 It's the worst part of 9-11. Actually, for me it was. 100%. To me, most modern country music, except for the Shibuzi, sounds like Creed. It sounds like Creed. Yes.
Starting point is 00:30:17 I agree with that. I also think it's... And I'm not saying that in a complimentary way. No, I think that... Again, we're not afraid to go there. It sounds like bad creed. Sure. Bad creed.
Starting point is 00:30:25 At least creed is owns up to being a Christian band. Yeah, it is all like sneakily Christian. Yeah. So I'm like, I'm having fun, but I'm like, I need, I want to, I just want to hear a song that I know, you know. And I... Well, Hank Williams is dead, honey. Yeah. I'm going to add to...
Starting point is 00:30:40 Someone else could sing the songs of Hank Williams. Sometimes... Maybe Hank Williams Jr. Yeah. People are out there. Three or four? Who's like to report? Hank Williams's.
Starting point is 00:30:49 People out there are calling in to tell us about Lucinda Williams and shit. Oh, I'm not, yes. I'm not talking about Alt Country. But you know what? The old 97s I'm not talking about. I might like regular country better than, in fact, I know that I like regular country better than Alt Country. But I may even like contemporary radio country better than Alt Country.
Starting point is 00:31:10 Whoa. Not afraid to go there. That is a real. Just don't love Alt Country. I walked by a bar. And I hear, Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da.
Starting point is 00:31:21 Wait, wait. That's what I was going to guess. That was my guess. That was my guess. God, I feel like we all have the same mind. Did we just become best friends? Anchor band. So, did you get his autograph?
Starting point is 00:31:42 Rush Limbaugh, I mean? Yeah, it was Rush Limbaugh. Oh, RIP. R-IP. Speaking of drug-seeking behavior. Speaking of drug-seeking behavior. God, that guy was cool. He was a good guy.
Starting point is 00:31:53 He was pretty cool. You're a greatest satirist. Party like Rush. Greatest satirist. That is a fun take to run with. What he was doing with satire, you see. Yeah, he was Colbert before Colbert. Holding up a mirror to the king and saying the gesture.
Starting point is 00:32:07 Holding up a mirror to Hillary, wherein she saw a lesbian. So I hear an ACDC riff. And I'm like, so one of the big developments on the show for your benefit, Ellery, is I have been very into Ozzie's Boneyard, the Sirius XM station that plays metal from the 70s and 80s. Jordan sometimes rants a car. He recently purchased a new car that comes with three months of free Sirius XM. I extended it for three more months. Did you? For a buck.
Starting point is 00:32:40 Listen, Sirius is the last thing that pays comedians. I think it's, I'm pro-serious radio. And that's why I did it. Yep. That's why I did it because I believe in you specifically. Well, I'm not on there yet. Okay. Well, get on there.
Starting point is 00:32:51 I'll record. Get on there. So, like, I'm like, this is great. Like, 70s metal is my new thing. I'm going to go in here. There's going to be some ACD, maybe some motorhead. I don't know. This is going to be great.
Starting point is 00:33:05 So I start heading into this bar and then I look up, it's Kid Rock's bar. And then you know that meme of Homer Simpson going back into the bushes? In the Bush's. That's you? Yeah. Wow. Good for you. Living your politics.
Starting point is 00:33:18 Thank you. Yes. And I went into another bar of someone who was probably also bad. I just didn't know how. Yeah, it was Black Rock. They own it. Oh, yeah. Hallibarton.
Starting point is 00:33:28 Hallibarton. The drink specials at Hallibart. Great happy hour. You guys want to take a little break and... Wait. Yeah. Who owns Benjys? Benji Netting Yahoo.
Starting point is 00:33:44 Oh, boy. Great mozzarella sticks, though. No comment. I have no comment. Good mozzarella sticks. Okay. Yeah, let's take a break. We'll be back in just a second on Jordan Jesse Go.
Starting point is 00:34:08 It's Jordan Jesse Go. I'm Jesse Thorne, America's Radio, Sweden. Jordan Morris, boy, detective. Every episode of Jordan Jesse Go is supported by our members, the members of Maximum Fund, folks who go to maximum fund.org slash join. Starting point is 00:34:36 We just watched Escape from New York. Escape from New York. Jesse, you had never seen a John Carpenter movie before. I had never seen any John Carpenter movie. Not a single one. We watched your first one. You know what? I watched They Live in high school. Okay. And my high school English class. So this is an update. Thanks to Mr. Crawford. So this is an update to the huge lies you were telling telling on our podcast. Yeah, I guess I got that wrong. You just forget. forget about Thales. Routy,
Starting point is 00:34:57 I mean, how could I have forgotten rowdy, Routy Piper? Pretty rowdy guy. He puts on the glasses and he can see the real truth. The real truth.
Starting point is 00:35:04 Yes. We're also supported this week by our friends at Factor. Jordan, summertime is a crazy time. Maybe you're going out of town. Maybe it's too hot. Maybe your children are cranky.
Starting point is 00:35:21 And all of a sudden. And you've got to see all those summer movies. You've got to see all the hit summer movies. there's a new Spider-Man. Well, how am I going to cook? I have too many long movies to see. And when the long movies are turning your life upside down, that's when Factor comes in Clutch.
Starting point is 00:35:38 They're chef-crafted, ready-to-eat meals, so you don't have to choose between real food and convenience. They have over 100 nutrient-dense menu items to choose from. You know what I'm pumped about, Jordan? What? Collards. Ooh. I fucking love collard greens.
Starting point is 00:35:52 Colored greens. I love collard greens. I don't care. Salard greens. I don't care. Who knows it? I love collard greens. Jesse said it.
Starting point is 00:35:57 It's my favorite leafy green. Sorry, Kale. I like collards. They got shredded pork. They got salmon burgers. Plus, add-ons you'll crave like pumpkin-flavored cheesecakes and protein shakes. When I am,
Starting point is 00:36:11 look, I've talked about it before. My number one factor use case, it's 11 a.m. I have a bullseye interview at one. I'm at my house. I'm prepping like crazy. It gets to be 1145. Then I realize I have to leave
Starting point is 00:36:25 in like 17 minutes. I don't have time to cook myself lunch, but I need to eat something before I go to get to the office and time to do the interview. I just pop one of those factors in the microwave. I have a fresh, tasty, whole meal waiting for me. I wolf it down and I go kick ass on the air for National Public Radio.
Starting point is 00:36:45 Let's eat real. Head to factor meals.com slash JJ Go 50 off and use code JJ Go 50 off to get 50% off and one free breakfast item per box. for one year while supplies last until 10, 31, 2021, 26. Starting point is 00:37:09 Jordan, you know how you're always doing events that you can mention and then people can come to them? Oh, I mention events and definitely people come to all of them, not just some of them. Can I tell you what? I finally got my own little event. Let's hear about the event. I mean, you're invited. I would love to have you there.
Starting point is 00:37:24 Sure. I'll check my calendar. It's sort of a Jesse event. Okay. American Cinematheque, which is a nonprofit that runs some movie theaters here in Los Angeles, among other things, has a festival called Friend of the Fest, movie festival. This is a festival where podcasters present films. Okay.
Starting point is 00:37:45 And they invited me to be a part of it this year, and my capacity is host of NPR's Bullseye with Jesse Thorne. And they found a print of my favorite movie, A Thousand Clowns, It is, we're going to be watching it August 21st at the Los Felis 3 here in Los Angeles. You can find more information at maximum fun.org slash events. But a thousand clowns is the beautiful, hilarious, moving, sad story of a comedy writer who is the guardian of his teenage nephew. And the comedy writer is struggling to be an adult, the nephew struggling to be a child. and it is really funny, very moving, very much like the movie for anyone who is a
Starting point is 00:38:31 former gifted child or a current former gifted child. And there's no clowns in it also. Not a clown. It's not a clown movie. Mr. Feeney from Boy Meets World is in it. Hey, that's cool. But no clown.
Starting point is 00:38:48 This is great. This is so fun. It is a like hard to see movie. It's like not readily. available and it sounds like you're watching it on film. Oh my gosh. How cool. You could see Jason Robards and Barbara Harris and Mr. Feeney and Barry Gordon, who later was one of the teenage mutant Ninja Turtles after his career as a child actor. The gang's all here. All of that at the Los Felis 3, August 21st. If you're in L.A., please come out. I'm going to give a little introduction.
Starting point is 00:39:18 Look, can I say this, Jordan? Sure. You want to take a picture with me after the show? I'm glad to. Okay. That's going to impress your friends. That will impress your friends. Not as much as if you'd met. Great on the grid.
Starting point is 00:39:30 A popular public radio host like Kai or Terry Gross or something. Sure. I mean, I'm at the bottom tier. Maybe they'll be there, though. And you can have a picture with everybody. It's not even as good as meeting a local public radio host who has a sandwich named after them at that fucking sandwich store. Okay, okay.
Starting point is 00:39:47 Oh, God. All right. So nobody wants to take a picture with me. But if you do want to take a picture with me, it's fine. We can do that. Okay. We'll be back in just a second on Jordan Jesse Go. It's Jordan Jesse Go. I'm Jesse Thorne America's Radio Sweetheart. Jordan Morris, boy detective.
Starting point is 00:40:12 I am Ellery Smith, good nickname Smith. It is. It is a good nickname. Agreed. If we discussed, you know, maybe two weeks ago on the show, we were recording this program and DJ Quick and Sugar Free were holding a concert in Pershing Square one block away from our office
Starting point is 00:40:28 that I couldn't go to because I had to work recording this program. The drudgery. And I was frustrated. Sure. I was frustrated because I love the music of DJ Quick and the music of Sugar Free. The two of my faves.
Starting point is 00:40:45 Maybe sugar free, not personally. But I enjoy music. And it's a lot of, I fucking two shorts over there. We've been booking this concert series to taunt you. It really feels that way. It really feels that way. Christian, who else is on this with?
Starting point is 00:41:01 Two short? Corrupt. One second. I'll figure it out. Next week, it's Mommy saying she's proud of you. And you can't go and hear it because you have to do the show. Bam, bam. Well, the real Rush Limbaugh.
Starting point is 00:41:21 Oh, yeah, it's me. The Excellence in Broadcasting Network. Yeah. Why do I know so much about Rush Limb? It's because it was on the sports talk. Because there was a monoculture before. There was a monoculture. There was a monoculture.
Starting point is 00:41:30 And I think music is, speaking of national, I think music is one of like the last monocultures that we have. Sort of. There's like, now I feel like many different buckets, but it reaches more. Shibuzzi, specifically, yeah. Specifically shibuzi. The Target Muzac playlist. That is the last monoculture that we have.
Starting point is 00:41:46 Oh, what's going on on the Target Muzac playlist these days? Too short exhibit. Exhibit. Okay. Lazy bone. The East Siders. I do think the East Siders are mad that they're built underneath one of the bones. Like it would be one thing if it was all of the bone thugs. A single bone.
Starting point is 00:42:03 They're like, we brought all the East Siders. I mean, yeah. Yeah, you don't know. Maybe. That's sort of like at the America 250, they had one half of Millie Vanilli. The Millie Vanilla writers, not the. Well, one of the Millie Vanillie's has passed away. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:18 He rest in peace. Okay. So when you do book Millie Vanillie, Vanilly. Who are you, are you booking the guys who lip synced or the guys who sang the songs? So that's what I'm saying is it was actually
Starting point is 00:42:28 the guys who sang the songs that were at America 250. It wasn't the face of Millie Manili. Oh. Yeah. Because only one of the faces is still alive. Yeah, but I think only one of the songwriters. But he is a professional musician.
Starting point is 00:42:41 The Millie Vanilly? The Millie or Finilly, whichever one is. Still alive. Still with us. He is alive. I know this because it came up on for. keeps the podcast about collections and connections.
Starting point is 00:42:54 Okay. There was a guy who had a Millie Vanilli collection, and the host, David Peter Kofsky, brought on either Millie or Vanilli, which isn't his name. But he's a very nice-seeming Dutch man. Oh. Think Dutch, maybe Danish. That's very interesting.
Starting point is 00:43:12 Right? Yeah. But they got the guys who sang the songs? Listen, this is me recollecting a new story. Now, if I remember, Crowley, that's the web. other girls, correct? You have restraining men. Yes, that's very funny.
Starting point is 00:43:25 Elery, who could be performing out there that would make you the maddest that you had to be in here doing the best? My music chase is like a little all over the place, but I've been very fortunate in that I tend to find people really early and I get to go before I can't afford tickets. Or I am really unlucky in that the people I like are so old, they're no longer performing. You're very influential. I mean, I think you're starting the fire. Yes, I'm starting the fire and all of those words. him afterwards.
Starting point is 00:43:51 Right. Yeah. This band will change your life, Ellery said, before putting your headphones on us. Nobody ever believes me, and they blow me off. And then two years go by and they go, wow. That's the Shibuzi she was talking about. They go, wow. That's Shaboozy.
Starting point is 00:44:06 I think all the time about. Fun to say Shaboozy. This time that this now disgraced public radio host was at the public radio, Connor. He was very disgraced. I shan't be saying his name, but he used to be in a Canadian novelty band. And he hosted a popular Canadian public radio show that aired on, I think still airs on public radio stations here. And he went up in a black leather jacket on the stage at the public radio conference. And I was like, already this is too much for me.
Starting point is 00:44:38 And I'm like, this Canadian novelty band man really needs to slow down with his behaviors. Then he talks some shit about my public radio show. And then... On stage? Yeah, it was a glancing blow. Okay. But we were both with Public Radio International at the time. And I was like, what the fuck?
Starting point is 00:44:58 Now, not to the extent that I did later when he was disgraced. I didn't know about his disgraceful behaviors. Right. I just knew he was being a dick on stage. Well, were there smoked as far? That's a good point. But the part... He was smoking now that I think about it.
Starting point is 00:45:13 In a leather jacket? Yeah. I had on a hat. I might have been Andrew Dice Clay. Yeah, sure. The Dights man. Whoa, Andrew Dice Clayon, PRI, Public Radio International. But there was this...
Starting point is 00:45:24 Oh, stay tuned for my interview with Maya Angelou. I would love to listen to that. Hickory, dickory, dick, back. I would... They fucked the great American poetess. What I wouldn't give, Jordan. The moment that really got to me, really got under my skin, was when he said that they had broken Adele in Canada.
Starting point is 00:45:44 Uh-huh. Are you saying that's what I sound like? It is, yes. That's what I sound as I'm like, I broke Adele. No one knew who Adel was. That was busking for quarters. Like, number one, Adel started out fame. Like, when you booked her on your national show in Canada that also airs on.
Starting point is 00:46:03 She was already famous. 19 was huge. The album was big. She might not have been, you know, 40 million sold Adele. But the original Adele, when she was just like, what if there's a new what's her name but not on drugs
Starting point is 00:46:22 what's a rehab woman called she was going to be the new Amy Winehouse Susan Boyle she was going to be the new Amy Winehouse at first and she'd be on KCRW and shit other song has rehab in the time you weren't saying just the rehab woman I believe it's about her going to rehab sure yeah the song I'm not going to rehab
Starting point is 00:46:40 I think she's called she didn't go I listen to the song and I don't know not all songs are true stories they tried to make her No, no. They can't play a song on the radio unless it's true. But also just like, I'm not saying Adele is bad because in general, Adele is pretty good. I'm just saying of all the things to brag that you like were ahead of the curve on.
Starting point is 00:47:03 Yeah. Like, oh, I was in early on Lawrence Welk. Like, what is the, where is the juice? I was the first guy to get Chipotle. Yeah. There's something there. I did know a guy who was like, well, sweet green is from my, my city.
Starting point is 00:47:19 That's funny. Then he really meant it. It was like, little mom and pop work lunch place. Genuinely, yes. He was like, well, I've been eating I've been eating sweet green for ever. That's really funny.
Starting point is 00:47:29 This is how, where is it? That's not what I'm saying. What's the home of sweet green? DC. DC. Classic. Slap bowl nation. Wow.
Starting point is 00:47:37 Bad brains and sweet green. The two things people brag about being from DC. Next thing you know, you'll be telling me that Panera bread was the St. Louis Bread Company. Was it? Yeah, it was. In St. Louis.
Starting point is 00:47:49 I think it might still be called that in San Luis. It's like that's what you eat when you have to go visit somebody at the hospital. But it's like a nice hospital fit. Yeah, I enjoy it. Just step up for sure. When I live in Washington, D.C., I ate a fair amount of Panera. I like that lemonade that kills you. That kills people.
Starting point is 00:48:02 I've never eaten there not sobbing. That's a good point. I'm only there if it's like close to the worst day of my life. Well, what would you say is your sobbing percentage? I mean, a solid 40, right? 40%. I think I'm clocking it at like a 20, not a 25. That seems high.
Starting point is 00:48:16 Maybe if somebody I love is in the hospital, probably 25, 30%, but otherwise I'm fairly two feet on the ground. Yeah. I mean, they might be in the hospital for a good reason. Like, maybe they're becoming a super soldier. Yeah. It's my first thought. They're switching genders. Like Captain America.
Starting point is 00:48:33 They're getting M.K. altered. Yeah. Exactly. They're going to triacet for the first time. Sure. They'll jump out a window. Nobody's fault. Nobody's fault.
Starting point is 00:48:44 No, they'll tell their communist. secrets first. They're going to do that to me. I know it. Um, what, okay, so who did you see in a small venue? I saw kneecap really early on. Love them. Oh, that's fun. They were, they were guests on my public radio program. They're very cool, funny guys. I fuck with them so hard. I think they're great. And then this other, they're belligerent Northern Irish rappers. I, I love the music. I also really love political music and that's how I got into them, maybe like 2020, 2020, 2021. And then this other kid who's a huge now Mexican OT, who I think is really fun. people, I like garage shows.
Starting point is 00:49:19 I like to hear people really early. And then you're out. No, I stay on. I stay on. It's not in the garage. You're not listening. I definitely value like getting to go see somebody, like in a small venue. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:30 I think there is a huge difference in what it is like to go to a concert in different sizes of place. Yes. That I feel like there are some people who don't feel like. like they saw a real concert unless there is a production. And then there are some who are like, I didn't see a real concert unless I can touch someone. Yeah. To me, at this point in my life, I feel I have not seen a concert if I have to stand because I will just leave.
Starting point is 00:50:05 I did, another person I loved, Mal Bloom, love them. I, it was like one of those concerts that I had to stand through the whole thing and it started late and it was the first time I was like, I can't do another one of these. I was wearing these shoes, which are horrible, their platform sandals. I would have guessed those were supportive shoes. My back went out. I had to, like, ask the bar to let. I was like, please let me sit out.
Starting point is 00:50:27 I'll tell you what. I, when we went to see Past Jordan Jesse Gov guest and our friend Dan Deakin, my daughter. Oh, I love Dan Deacon. The greatest, the greatest guy. And my daughter and I went to see Dan Deacon, and I didn't want to bother Dan. So I bought tickets. I'm like, I'm going to support Dan. Deakin. I'm not going to ask to be on the guest list. Put me on the list, guys.
Starting point is 00:50:50 I'm going to, I'm going to, but then I was like, oh, like my daughter has a little bit of the old pots. So sometimes she has a hard time standing up for a long time. I'm like, oh, I should, uh, I should make sure that there's a place to sit. And I like, I'm looking up the disability accommodations on the fucking venue website. And I'm like, fuck it. I'm just going to bother Dan Deakin. I'm going to text him. I'm going to bother Dan Deacon. I texted Dan Deacon and he texted me. me back. Yeah, you can go to the VIP balcony. That's what it's for. There you go.
Starting point is 00:51:21 There you go. Yes. VIPs aren't standing up. They're sitting the whole time. They got fucking... I'm basically fucking... I'm basically the guy who's trying to sign Wayne and Garth. Sure?
Starting point is 00:51:36 That's a lifestyle. You're watching the concert from your limo. You're like a credit card magnet. Oh, yeah. To certain people and certain crowds. Well, hey, that sounds like a pretty momentistication. That does. That's a great point, Jordan.
Starting point is 00:51:47 Maybe we should. Oh, sorry. It's okay. That's okay. You didn't know. You didn't know. Maybe we should. You cheated me.
Starting point is 00:51:53 When something. What did you have a thing? Were you going to? No, no, no. Maybe I should say the podcast about connections and God damn it. I messed it up again. Are we going to leave it all the times you messed it up? It's about collections and connections.

Jordan, I think what would really envivify this would be an example.
Starting point is 00:52:38 Ooh, I love those. Hi, friends. This is Aubrey from Connecticut calling with an update to my momentous occasion. I previously called in about getting approved for a hysterectomy, and I finally had it, and my update is that I was finally able to have sex without being in pain, and I feel like a new person, and I feel like that is a pretty momentous occasion. I also just wanted to say that I've been listening to the Hell Lublin episode, and it's been so nice listening to Christian laugh in the background. I know I think a lot of us listeners have missed listening to Sunny Dee laugh in the
Starting point is 00:53:14 background, so that just brought me a lot of joy. I love you guys. Bye. Sunny D. Gone, not forgotten. Brian Fernandez, our former producer, Christian, sometimes he just can't help himself. That was so sweet. Aubrey, the caller's name, Aubrey?
Starting point is 00:53:31 Can I just send a message to Aubrey? Hey, Aubrey, way to fuck. Yeah, that's a great point. You know what? There's a lot of lady parts pains that aren't taken sufficiently seriously by these conservative nurses who are just there to suck a stripper's day. Can call that.
Starting point is 00:53:54 Can call that. Sure, yes. But I'm glad that the hysterectomy repaired your ability to get up on that dick. We wish nothing but the most fruitful, expansive, delightful, delightful, creative connection building connection building you guys know so many adjectives
Starting point is 00:54:20 yes you know what thank you I have my own NPR show they do use a lot of adjectives they gave me a test we're good yeah this is a good show so this is a good show that people like and people listen to it's really good and everyone
Starting point is 00:54:37 knows and agrees on that it's not a bad show with no ideas No. Do we have two calls tonight, Christian? Yes, sir. We have one more call. One more call. Well, why don't you hit play on it? We'll listen to it. Hi, Jordan. Hi, Jesse. Hi, guest. Judy Greer. This is Segal from San Diego. I am your biggest Tibetan-American fan. And I'm calling him with a momentous occasion, which is, I just, after listening to hundreds and hundreds of episodes of y'all, I just met one of you, Jordan, at San Diego Comic Comedy.
Starting point is 00:55:11 It was awesome. You signed my shirt. Is this from this weekend? Try Sertotops. It was cool. And thanks. Thanks. It was awesome. And also, a two for one, because I forced my wife to record this with me. To tell you why she doesn't listen to Jordan, Jesse.
Starting point is 00:55:27 Oh, great. Hi. I'm Segal's wife, and I don't listen to the podcast because I think in general, I don't like to listen to men speaking or other and unfortunately that means that I will not be listening to your podcast.
Starting point is 00:55:47 I have listened to Bullseye in the past and I have enjoyed it. And we just saw Jordan on a panel and I did laugh at him the most. So there's hope. But as of right now, I don't have plans to listen to it. And I'm sorry this sounds very rude, but I was told this is the prompt, so that is my response. Love you. Love you too. So Gil's wife, you're dead on.
Starting point is 00:56:16 We have been asking, for your benefit, Ellery, we have been asking the spouses of listeners. We found that listener's spouses hate our show. And so... You guys are like Car Talk. Is that? Oh, God, we wish. Can you imagine if we were as fucking... Okay, who's freaking...
Starting point is 00:56:36 Oh, please let me be frick. If I was fracked, Gruppel would love. love me. That's something we talked about earlier. Was it on Mike? I think so. You know what? Yeah, I think that might have been on Mike. We're not sure, though. Oh, no, I'm fracked. Whatever.
Starting point is 00:56:53 So we've been asking spouses to call in and let us know what they don't like about the show. We're just trying to take notes. We're just trying to grow. You know, we're 20 years deep in the game and our... Never stop evolving. Thank you. Exactly. Never stop evolving. Because you know what they
Starting point is 00:57:09 say? If you stop evolving, that means you're Australian, probably a marsupial. Right. And you think you don't have to evolve because you're on an island. You don't have any natural predators. Is that what happened to them? Marsupials, I think so. That's why their balls are always out.
Starting point is 00:57:28 Are their balls always out? Yeah, you're always, I see so. You're thinking of purebred dogs. No, I'm thinking koalas. My Instagram feed right now is all koalas with their balls hanging out. All koala balls, huh? And they look very hot. Love that old 90 snack, koala balls.
Starting point is 00:57:43 When you say they look hot. I like sweaty. Sweaty. Balls are sweaty. Yeah. No, truly, they look like overheated. Right. Got it.
Starting point is 00:57:51 I thought, I mean, I didn't. I just. You never want to assume, does he? I didn't want to. When you said their balls were out and they looked hot. They look hot. I see. I understand.
Starting point is 00:58:01 I'm sorry. That was, I don't know what I did. I don't know if a magic test. You clarified. To this scholar. To this, I, are we getting a, Christian is putting up koala balls. You know this is a work computer, right?
Starting point is 00:58:15 You can't just type koala balls into a work computer. Come on incognito mode, baby. I would love to be MaxFun, HR. I would love to see what that looks like. Well, that person quit a long time ago. That person has been out for years. I want to say, I'll say a couple of things to this caller and their spouse. I forget the spouse's name, but mentioned.
Starting point is 00:58:39 Her name was not mentioned. I, you know, part of her thing was, hey, I just don't, you know, love the show because I don't like listen to men talking. I'm sorry you had to go to Comic-Con. Oh, boy. What a wonderful, what a wonderful partner. There's a lot of women on those panels now. That's true. That's why I call it the M-C-U.
Starting point is 00:59:00 Now, let's watch my YouTube video. We're not making an awful thumbnail face. Hold on, hold on. Did you have a good time at Comic-Con? I had a good time at Comic-Con. Yes, I had a lovely time. I said you were on a few different panels. I'm amazed that you're here today.
Starting point is 00:59:14 Oh, yeah. I'm running on fumes. Good for you. Maybe fumes and convention center nachos. You know what, Jordan? I love the listeners. Through the course of the show tonight, you've been the one I've laughed at the most. Oh, thanks.
Starting point is 00:59:26 Just like our listener's wife. Yes. So I do remember this listener because he was a nice Jordan Jessica listener and brought the t-shirt to sign. Also, they were nice enough to buy a book, which I always appreciate. You don't have to, but it's why I'm there. You're going to go get an autograph. It's nice. I appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:59:47 I think I like it. I have a book. It's a Eisner Award nominee. rules. I don't think. To put a, a character I didn't recognize. Honestly,
Starting point is 01:00:11 she sounded great, too. She sounded like a great lady to me. So, me too. I don't want to convert this person. To listening to the show?
Starting point is 01:00:17 Yeah. No, they don't have to listen to the show. You respect your position on it. I kind of think we should, to me, the best note that we could take from that call is maybe we should just shut it down. Shut it down. Shut it down.
Starting point is 01:00:28 You could be by men for men. There you go. Honestly, if we like, honestly, if we played that up. You're talking about, you're talking about boo boo. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:37 By us. Buy us. Buy us for us. Yeah. I think just before this caller came up and was nice and lovely and a wonderful bright shining light at Comic-Con, I did have another kind of interaction. Okay. So after you do a panel at Comic-Con, sometimes they will kind of shunt you to an autograph
Starting point is 01:01:01 area and then everybody from the panel will like sign books and there's like a bookstore there with everybody's book who was on the panel. That sounds great. That sounds like a perfect setup. It's awesome. You don't have to lug stuff. So a lot... Everybody can't get into the alias panel.
Starting point is 01:01:13 They're at your panel. Sure. And then they get shunted. They get shunted. Yeah, it's really nice. I believe the bookstore that provides them as Mysterious Galaxy in San Diego, which is a lovely indie bookstore. And while I was doing one of these, sometimes people come up and are just looking for as many signatures as they can get. And it doesn't...
Starting point is 01:01:35 They just want to get signatures. Like a girl from the 1930s with an autograph book? Yeah, kind of. It'll be people with posters and stuff. I definitely have had people who like, I've worked on a show and they don't know what the fuck. They don't know who I am. So they have me sign the bottom.
Starting point is 01:01:50 Yeah. Do you know what I mean? So like they can collect all the signatures and then sell it. Yeah. But I'm not, they don't know me enough. So they're like, can you sign the bottom? Uh-huh. So that there's prime real estate for the famous people.
Starting point is 01:02:01 Sure. But I want it, but I don't want it. I don't want you to John Hancock this thing. Exactly. You have done like Comic-Con panels and stuff for shows you worked on. Okay. Do you have to, would you mean people want you to sign a stack? No, just like a poster or a lot of times.
Starting point is 01:02:17 It was even just a blank piece of paper. And so this person came up and was going down the line and just having everybody from our panel sign this thing. And then the thing that I heard him say to the person before me is, I talked to my girlfriend and we both agree. We vaguely recognize you. Oh. We vaguely recognize you.
Starting point is 01:02:40 Anyway. So there's some of that, too. There you go. I'll take a vaguely. It's hard work. What? Being at Comic Con, it's hard work. It's a lot.
Starting point is 01:02:50 It's a delight, but it has its challenges. It has its challenges. And yes, it can. Well, especially since it's been sponsored by Halliburton. That's how, like, you know how South by Southwest is, like, partially sponsored by the U.S. Is it? I didn't know that. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:03:08 And that's why there's like such a tech element. I don't know. Soft power, you'd have to ask them. I'm not. Soft power. They don't let me read the books anymore, you know? Not since, not since Doge killed USAID was running South by Southwest and anti-AIDS programs in Africa.
Starting point is 01:03:23 Oh my gosh. Wow. That's how they got all their money back. South by. Mm-hmm. South by. Well, hey, as long as Shibuzi gets a little cut, huh? To perform at the...
Starting point is 01:03:31 Look, we do what we can to support. Salteous energy tent. The Celsius Energy Tense. Shibuzi. We'd love to support Shibuzi. Okay, but yes, but thank you. But there are many nice Comic-Con experiences, and this was one of them,
Starting point is 01:03:42 so thank you to this caller. I have a question about Comic-Con. In 2026, what's the rule about what is the far edge of things that are allowed to be at Comic-Con? Whoa. Like, and I'm not talking about the darkest edge.
Starting point is 01:04:02 No, no, I understand what you mean, because actually the tent grows wider. every year it would seem. Because, like, I saw... Supernatural. That's not a comic book. I saw our... I saw John Ross Bowie was there with Brian Possein and Lauren Lappas.
Starting point is 01:04:16 Yeah. And the guy that's actually famous from that show that's from Big Bang, their main big bang theory guy. Yeah, John Ross Bowie on a Big Bang Theory kind of spin-off show and it's kind of a crazy sci-fi genre version of the show. But that's a crazy sci-fi genre version of the show. And it's a show about nerds, you know, like... vaguely insulting sometimes,
Starting point is 01:04:37 but a show about the original show about nerds. I'm like, okay, that makes sense. Yeah. But you're still getting to the edge. Like when you're got networks, I know that's, look, it's rated mature. Mm-hmm. But it's still, it's still networks at Com territory we're in.
Starting point is 01:04:54 An alias, I think, is right there. When we got kicked off stage for the alias people to come on one time, I was like, oh, alias, okay. I mean, that's like a spy show, right? what is the thing that you saw, and it's a time that I went, and there were giant posters of Dane Cook. Sure.
Starting point is 01:05:13 So I think that the days of that are past pretty much. That has been walked back significantly in my experience. So, yeah, there was a time at Comic-Con where it was just any pop culture thing, you know. And yeah, it was like, the pretty little liars panel. I would have been there front row. Listen, we would all love to meet the liars, especially if they're pretty.
Starting point is 01:05:33 But yeah, but it was that stuff was like, ah, this doesn't really fit. And, you know, but I think, I think, I think nature has kind of healed in that way. Or did the CW just die? Yeah, I think it made me the CW not being around is a thing and a place for that sort of stuff. But right now, I think the one thing you will see that is a little bit baffling is like a police procedural, but it has to have Nathan Philean in it. Wait. So. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:03 So I think if you have a beloved nerd person at the center, like you're not seeing the Abbott Elementary tent anymore. Right. But you will see the like chin PI panel. Like it's got something with Edward James Almost in it. Yes. It's like for James Almost. There's just a retrospective of stand it and deliver.
Starting point is 01:06:24 Yeah. With Battlestar Galactica's Edward James Almost. Yeah. But yeah. And then there's like a lot of like family guy stuff. Family guys. Family guy stuff. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:32 A lot of family guys. I feel like the cartoons get... Yeah, cartoon... Yeah. Because they're so expressive. Because they're so expressive. Was there any Teen Titans stuff going on there? You know, there's not a ton of...
Starting point is 01:06:43 There was some space ghost stuff. Was there some space ghost stuff? I would love to see some space ghost. They're doing a space ghost reboot. Really? I think. Don't quote me on that. Huge news. I missed that.
Starting point is 01:06:51 Okay, well, then maybe that's not true. But there was... I saw some space ghost stuff from the adults when people. They're rebooting it as Earth Ghost. Yes. They're like, it needs to be more grounded. It's deep sea ghost now. Wow. Okay.
Starting point is 01:07:03 I just pitch that for television. Tell television. I should. Tell television I have a good idea. I famously don't really care about space. Not a big space guy. Really? I just don't care.
Starting point is 01:07:12 I don't know what it is. I'm kind of hot and cold on space as well. Like space movies don't really do it for me. Mostly cold. Depends how close you get to the sun area. It depends on where you are in space. But let's do this. Let's send our scoop about space goes to deadline.
Starting point is 01:07:25 Christian, you'll mail that in. Can you file that for us? But say it was anonymous. Mail it to Nikki Fink, I guess. And we'll come back for a little. a little bit more. Gotcha. We'll be back in just a second on Jordan Jesse Go. La, la, la, la, la, la. Good evening. Thanks for tuning in to 101.1 Max Fun. It's midnight here on host to coast, and we've got Sarah from Michigan on line one. Hi, I'm calling him for some help.
Starting point is 01:07:55 I used to love reading, but between grad school, having kids and the general state of the world, I can't seem to pick up a book and stick with it anymore. Sarah, this is an easy one. Just listen. into reading glasses, a podcast designed to help you read better. Brea and Mallory will get all the pressure, shame, and guilt out of your reading life. Ooh, I don't think they cover that. Reading glasses every Thursday on Maximum Fun.
Starting point is 01:08:26 What is Manners? It's kind of a social dance that we've all agreed to. Who is Manners? Well, we reference Emily Post a lot. Why is Manners? Let's go back to Royal Etiquette. Schmanors answers all these questions. Through examining history, culture, literature, and more,
Starting point is 01:08:43 we'll give you the ultimate insight on why we did it, how we do it, and why we still might do it today. So check us out every Friday on Maximumfund.org or wherever podcasts are found. Manners Schmanors. Get it? It's Jordan Jesse Go. I'm Jesse Thorne America's Radio Sweetheart, Jordan Morris Boy, Detective. I'm Ellery's beloved guest. You know what?
Starting point is 01:09:11 true. It is true. We love Ellery Smith. Just matter. One of the new We're already a blast. We're all having a blast. Hang my jersey in the rafters. Who needs to go see King Shorty, whoever that is, ripping and rapping out there. We're in here chopping
Starting point is 01:09:27 it up with word jazz, the original rap. That's like the mixed bill that's King Cruel and Too Short. Uh-huh. Yes. Sure. Why not? Fuck it at the Warfield. Why not? Go see him at the Warfield.
Starting point is 01:09:41 Yeah, well, it seems like you should go see Ellery Smith at a stand-up venue near you. Please. I'm in L.A. for the rest of the summer, doing tons of dates. Find me on Instagram, Ellery underscore Smith. And you know what? I've been finding more and more that people who don't live in L.A. can find you on Instagram at Ellery underscore Smith. I try to keep them away, but they just keep finding their way in. You know what? I call it flyover country because I judge it negatively. Just kidding. No one has ever said that. No one has ever said that. I've never talked about. to someone who says that. Elri, it's been a delight to talk to you. I'm going to give you,
Starting point is 01:10:17 just before we go, just real quick, I'm going to give you the opportunity to voice your objections to space. It just kind of bores me. I just sort of don't care. And I find that, like, people's fascination with going to space is a bit fascist. And I'm like, I really, you know, I'm swinging at some political stuff here. But I really feel like they're going to send us up. and the first thing we're going to have to do is send an email. Like we'll go to the moon, there will be life on the moon, and it will be we works, you know? Yeah, sure. That makes sense.
Starting point is 01:10:51 If I'm telling the truth, Ellery, please. I'd get up there to the surface of the moon, and I could be looking down at the earth. And you know how they say when you're up in the moon, you look down at the earth? It just looks like a little tiny marble, you know, and you get a sense. Didn't it ruin William Shatner's life? Of how vulnerable it is and how vulnerable you are and how tiny are place is in the universe and that all we can really do is be decent to each other. But I wouldn't notice it because I just, my nose would be in my phone.
Starting point is 01:11:24 I'd just be scrolling my phone. I genuinely think that's true. I love to scroll my phone on Instagram. I genuinely think that's true. And I also am like, there is nothing out there that you can learn about humanity that you can't learn right here with two feet on the ground. There you go. Are your local library people? wherever at Comic-Con, doing podcasts with friends.
Starting point is 01:11:43 Grow up. Yeah. Yeah. Elon. Instead of trying to go up to space. For like a space, like piece of fiction to do anything for me, I, you just have to fill it with so many spaceships and monsters. Oh, really?
Starting point is 01:11:59 For me to be into it. Well, I very much enjoyed Project Hail Mary. Oh, I haven't seen it. My mom enjoyed that's told me that she enjoyed that recently. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it. I love puppets. Everybody enjoyed it.
Starting point is 01:12:10 I love practical effects, and I was taken. You love long movies. You know, I hate long movies, but I forgave it. Yeah, it's sort of like a few movies in a row. Yeah. Most movies now are two movies together. Yeah, you've got to have at least a movie and a half. The Odyssey, which I also loved, three movies.
Starting point is 01:12:28 A lot of movies. I don't know if we'll be scrolling our phones on the moon. We've got to figure out how to grow potatoes in a pile of our own shit. If I know anything about how space works. Is that what happens in the movie? What happens is the movie The Martian. Oh, okay. I saw that, but I forgot the shit potato part.
Starting point is 01:12:45 I rented the book The Martian from the library on my e-reader. Yes. Because I was like, I need a fun, dumb book to read it. A page Turner. I'm going to like this, The Martian book. You know what I didn't like? The fucking Martian, I thought it sucked. That was so badly written.
Starting point is 01:13:03 I thought it was really stunk. But I did like the movie, was that movie called? The Martian? No, the one... Project Hail Mary. I did like that. That's the same guy wrote the novel. My mom loved it. Oh, really? Yeah, it's fun. I don't know anything about the book. I don't know if the book is good or what. Probably sucks based on how much the Martians sucked. It's entirely possible. Sorry most of our listeners who probably like that book. We're not afraid to take on all kinds of sacred cows. Elri, it's been a joy to have you on the program. Thank you so much. You have a big headline show coming up in Los Angeles. I'm headlining the Lyric-Eyperian. It's not going to be that big. It's just going to be like a new material show.
Starting point is 01:13:38 the 26th of August. Come on out. I will put some fun feature acts on, maybe a little music, and we'll have a good time. Who do you think's going to feature? I don't know yet.
Starting point is 01:13:49 My friend Harper Rose Drummond is a musical comedian who's running a very funny show right now, and so I'm thinking her, and then I'll get a good mix of people in. It'll be a good mix of people. It'll be a good mix, yeah. Okay, Cameron Nespasito.
Starting point is 01:14:00 I'm going to go, okay, who's in town? Who's in town? Who's in town? It will work for free. Cameron Nespasito. She's bigger than me. She's not going to open for me. She's not as big as our biggest Tibetan fan. That's right.
Starting point is 01:14:13 Tibetan American fan. This guy's huge. Was he a large guy? I would say an average height man, but he had big anime hair, and that adds a couple inches. That's a good point. Best part of his costume. Tech and hair. It could have been big tech and hair yet.
Starting point is 01:14:28 But those are anime-styled characters. But it's not anime hair. If it's Tekken hair. It's like PlayStation's hair. Jesse, what I said was right. Okay. What I said, right. Can I just make it sound like I said the wrong thing?
Starting point is 01:14:44 Jordan. I, what I said was right. Jordan, it sounds like you were right. Yes. And I helped us stick the landing on this show.
