Kill James Bond! - S4E49: Jackie Brown

Episode Date: October 17, 2026

The third film by Quentin Tarantino, Jackie Brown is an homage to the blaxploitation movies of the 70s and 80s- specifically those starring Pam Grier, who stars as an airline hostess out of luck and o...ut of time, who plays the cops (Michael Keaton) off against an arms dealer (Samuel L Jackson) in pursuit of half a million simoleons. I don't know what happened in this one. Maybe Diabolik released some Exhilarating Gas into the recording studio before we began or something. ----- FREE PALESTINE My friend Ahmed still needs to feed his family and afford medicine. Starting point is 00:00:00 I'll tell you what, I drank something the other day. I drank some Mr. Beast X liquid death, peanut butter cup flavored sparkling water. Oh, what the fuck? That sounds like me killing myself. That sounds like some of the world. I can't even, that's too many things. It tastes like, it tastes like peanut butter cups.
Starting point is 00:00:20 The first sip is just like, yeah, they made that. And then the subsequent sips are like, this is getting worse rapidly. We shouldn't do this. No. Yeah. Sometimes the soda exists for the first sip. to be like, wow, they actually did get pretty close to that flavor. And then every subgrouped soup to be like, why did they do that?
Starting point is 00:00:34 Why would they feel like it was necessary? Your scientists were so concerned about whether or not they could. And with great soda comes great responsibility. I swear to God, there's like a chocolate and banana-flavored fanta I've seen before. Jesus Christ. Hello and welcome to another episode of Kill James Bond. I am November Kelly. I am joined, as always, by my friend Abigail Thorne and Devon.
Starting point is 00:01:11 Hello. Cowabunger, brother? Gentle listener And before we get into this Let me just go to my browser and open something up here A list of Pepsi variations That's a surprise tool
Starting point is 00:01:25 that will help us later However For this part of Heist season We are encamped firmly In a world That begins with the beautiful phrase that we love to see Quentin and Tarantid By written Directino
Starting point is 00:01:41 Yes, Tarantino season continues on Kill James Bond. It's got to be hat. It's going to be tight. It's cool. It's a cool movie. It's a big picture. It's a good movie.
Starting point is 00:01:49 It's cool. It's got a lot of feet in it. It contains some opinions about the state of Israel. The thing about Jackie Brown is that it was really early in the movies that he made. And it just like my take on this is if he'd made this even five years later, it would have been too annoying for me to enjoy. But this is like snatching the hat out as it closes like Indiana Jones. think some of his worst instincts are starting to show up here, but they are nowhere near as bad they get in his later catalogue, which I just can't stand.
Starting point is 00:02:21 Yeah, I'm conscious of the fact that this is going to be three white people talking about a movie with a lot of black people in it that relates to a loss of black exploitation movies. However, Quentin Tarantino is white, and this is, you know, I know he considers that to be a sort of form of violence against him. He is one of us. We do have to acknowledge him. We do claim him. Yeah. And so does he is the problem. And he really doesn't want to. And Jackie Brown, which is his third film, is, I think it's very good. I think it shares a lot of the optimism of something like true romance, which is sort of a stronger thing. He was a better director when he was more optimistic before the nihilism really got him. But he was also a better director before he felt like he had to work out on screen exactly. why he felt the way that he does about black people, you know? Yeah, you should really try and figure that out.
Starting point is 00:03:17 Ideally, not in public. And like, before you make the movie, yeah. Yeah, well, the way that he seems to feel about it is, I should be allowed to say the word. He does believe it, yes. Yeah. I mean, yeah. I mean, he lets himself say it a couple of times,
Starting point is 00:03:32 not in this movie, but in his catalogue. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. In reservoir dogs, it's there to shock, right, and to go, oh, these people are repulsive, right? Here, you know, it's that too, but it's also sort of something that he's sort of normalizing for himself using black actors and writing dialogue for them. You do kind of get the sense where he's going, they can say it, it's allowed. You can't get mad at me.
Starting point is 00:03:58 Yeah. He's worked out a foolproof strategy. It's like a raptor testing offenses here. Yeah, to say the word, which is if I write in Samuel L Jackson's script that he should say the word, then it's like I'm saying it. Yeah. We cannot establish or prove on Kill James Bond that Quentin Tundiwina was sitting there on the set
Starting point is 00:04:18 mouthing along during the taping. It kind of feels like he was. He's placing bullets that are the N-word into the gun and putting it inside of Samuel Jackson. He's like the evil LP in that he's mouthing all the dialogue, but only saying the N-word. It's a little run-the-jules reference for you there. The evil LP is a martial masterpiece.
Starting point is 00:04:40 others. He does two things, evil raps and evil fucks. We start off the movie with two very funny things, well, one very funny thing that happens to the credit, one very shocking thing that happens in the credits. The first is that a movie is called Jackie Brown, and by incredible coincidence, the casting director's name is also Jackie Brown. I also wrote that. Which is very funny.
Starting point is 00:05:00 And then after you get that little moment of levity, you're immediately hit with executive producer Harvey Weinstein. Yeah, that sticks around for a while in these movies. Oh, yeah. Miramax, baby. Now that's a Miramax picture. We make up for this with Pam Greer's profile. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:05:17 Yes. Quentin Tarantino is obsessed with Justly. He is right to do that. He definitely knows that a good, like, loading, what are you call it? Like a load bearing. A support beam for this movie is just close-ups of Pam Greer's face. He's so right. He's completely correct.
Starting point is 00:05:33 Welcome back to the podcast, Pam Greer. Pam Greer is an incredible actor. right? And she's beautiful, obviously. We last saw her playing Carjack Malone in Escape from LA, the greatest film of all time. Oh, my God. When she played trans, we did. We did. And yeah, this was sort of a comeback role for her, and this is, you know, I'm glad, you know,
Starting point is 00:05:58 this is an actual sort of cultural service that Quentin Tarantino could do is to sort of resurrect, you know, black exploitation as a genre and sort of draw sort of cultural attention to it in that way and I'm glad. I don't think that he's going to stay very normal about this and I think he is then subsequently going to take this as a kind of permission giving to do whatever the fuck you want. But for the moment, we approve of this. Yeah. Pam, Pam Greer, of course, also, if you're not aware as a listener, famously, like quite a leading actor in the black exploitation genre. Yeah, coffee, Foxy Brown. Yeah, exactly. A lot of these movies that are being pastished here and homage to,
Starting point is 00:06:40 she was directly the protagonist of as well. So it is kind of nice to have her back for this. But she's playing Jackie Brown, and she's a flight attendant, and we see her glide into the movie of the opening credit. Very confident, very strong. Yeah, it's very, cool. We see that kind of fall apart as she has to start running to make her plane, you know, which I like.
Starting point is 00:07:03 We see that the plane's well. waiting, you know, the boarding is like waiting for her to get there, which I really like. And yeah, then we go to... Chicks who love guns. Beautiful of... America. Yes. And it's beautiful television.
Starting point is 00:07:17 Los Angeles, California, my beloved trash fire. By this is Venice Beach, Johnson. And Robert De Niro are sitting in a beachside apartment watching a videotape called Chicks who love guns in which women in bikinis go, this gun is an M-9-7-99. 7 for 7.5. And it delivers 5 billion bullets a minute. Bada, bad, blah, bad, blah, bad, bad. Like, titties jiggling, you know,
Starting point is 00:07:42 casing's bounding off the tities. And I like it because it has a double trigger pulling the slide action. Magazines, guns, pow, pow, powder, bang. That's the tape. That's what they're watching. As they're watching this together, they're watching this,
Starting point is 00:07:58 so there's Samuel L. Jackson, Robert De Niro, and then Samuel L. Jackson's character's girlfriend, who is, of course, barefoot. She's got kind of a surfer chick thing going on. To rings. People call her that. Melanie.
Starting point is 00:08:12 Yeah, for real. And this whole time, Samuel L. Jackson's character, Ordel, is explaining excruciatingly that he is an arms dealer to a Robert De Niro who really does not care that much. Right? Who is kind of tuned out. And he's talking about all of the guns and how he has sold all of these guns. And I do like that Tarantino sort of is successfully able to hedge himself against people who care about this sort of thing here because the second he actually gets up, Melanie, the girlfriend, is like, oh yeah, O'Dell doesn't know what he's talking about.
Starting point is 00:08:46 He's just like repeating stuff he's heard from people. Yeah, we see, in fact, he's repeating what. And then on the tape it says the same thing, like five minutes later. Like, it's really cute. Yeah, yeah. He's like pausing it and like turning a volume up and down. He's explaining it, yeah. He's so into it.
Starting point is 00:09:00 There's a funny bit where when he's on the, phone, Melanie is kind of like posing and, you know, she knows that Robert and here is into. And then we get this great exchange where she goes, you just get out of prison, right? And he's like, yep, four years. So he got out of prison like two days ago and he's devastatingly fucking horny at the sight of this super chick with her like little piggy's out. It's really, really funny. She's got the pigies out as well.
Starting point is 00:09:24 She's like resting her little toe against the lip of his glass. And you better believe we've got to close up on that. Yeah. He's trying to get her to answer the phone for him. And we have this sort of little, you know, very low rent sort of battle of wills between them, right? In which he kind of like threatens her a bit until she gets up and gets the phone for him. And, you know, as they're then talking, you know, we find out we're really foregrounding something that Reservoir dog sort of parceled out through the movie. Well, not just defeat, but that these guys are massive losers, right?
Starting point is 00:10:00 Yes. De Niro is just kind of, you know, yes, he's just gotten out of prison. He's kind of directionless, but he's mostly just kind of nodding along to stuff, you know? Yeah, he's like... He's a bit thick, yeah. Yeah. It's kind of funny to cast Robert De Niro in a movie and then give him basically nothing to do. He's just kind of sad.
Starting point is 00:10:15 It's really good casting, yeah. His body language as he's moving around, he's so awkward. He so doesn't want to be there. He, like, barely wants to hear anything that's ever being said to him. He just wants to smoke weed and hang out. Ordel, Samuel L. Jackson, looks terrible. Also, just trying so hard to make Samuel look uncool. Single wisp beard and a ponytail.
Starting point is 00:10:38 Coming out of the tip of his, like, the drummer from System of a Down. Like a straight Jafar. It's really odd. Fucking like pony tail as well. Like a straight black Jafar. This shit got me feeling like a straight Jafar. It's doing the same thing as Reservoir Dogs. It's like, damn, crime is like inspired by popular culture, right?
Starting point is 00:10:58 Like, people, criminals decide what guns they want because they watch action movies and they go, yo, that's the gun from the movie, right? Sure, whatever. The phone goes again. Something that I like here is Delodele has now kind of boxed himself into a corner in the stupidest possible way of making Melanie answer the phone for him. And he has to now sort of fight this out with her unspokenly. But I think that does also depend on you, the viewer, thinking that violence against women is, kind of funny or at least a little bit cool.
Starting point is 00:11:31 Yes, yes, it's very true. It does. So the phone goes, and it's the inciting incident of the movie, because Chris Tucker is calling. He's a fellow by the name of Beaumont, and he's in jail because he got pulled over, driving by the cops, carrying a pistol that Samuel L. Jackson sold to him. So they've got to go, shit, well, we've got to go and get our guy out of prison, right?
Starting point is 00:11:50 Absolutely. Yes. So. Who do they go see? Oh. He goes to see. Let me just open this back up here. Just double check who they, go to see.
Starting point is 00:11:59 Max Cherry, baby, who is played by Robert Forster. A man named, while standing in a certain aisle of the supermarkets. Yes. Incredible. I love this guy so much. Pepsi Max Cherry, himself. Pepsi Max Cherry. Oh, I see. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:12:17 Here we go. Uh-huh. It was sort of a comeback thing for him as well, because Robert Forster, he had played a lot of, like, P.I. And stuff like that. Oh. So, this is a very, similar role except it's like
Starting point is 00:12:31 older and more kind of resigned you know and so kind of like a good cop character but he's a bail bondman yeah he's someone I'm only familiar with from Twin Peaks the Return where he plays the sheriff in that and he is wonderful in the United Snakes of
Starting point is 00:12:47 America occur yes the great Satan indeed right they have cash bail which means that if you are if you've been arrested for something and the judge agrees that it's okay to bail you, to let you out of prison before your trial, right, then they can set the sort of cash value on that that you have to put down as security, right, so that you don't try and flee from justice.
Starting point is 00:13:12 Right. And that cash value varies based on how badly the justice system wants to fuck you over. And since a lot of people don't have that kind of money lying around, what you do is you go to a bail bondman who lends you that money on the security, that if you run, they are the ones who come and catch you, right? Yeah. And that's the kind of quasi-cop
Starting point is 00:13:33 that Pepsi tropical chill here is. It's a great protagonist role to be in your movie. It's this, it's like insurance adjuster or whatever, like this is a peak. This is the guy from the second bit of L.A. Noir. Lots of ways into lots of stuff. I go do shit.
Starting point is 00:13:51 Yeah. Kind of guy. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And bail for Bermont has been said at $10,000, right? And Odell has cash. Yeah, they're kind of figuring each other out. Like, obviously fucking Pepsi Vanilla
Starting point is 00:14:05 knows that Odell is a criminal, right? And equally, he doesn't seem particularly bothered by this. Even says later on, whatever you're into, you're clearly getting away with it, some more power to you. It's quite sweet. Yeah, yeah. But he has the cash. So Max, is like, why go through me?
Starting point is 00:14:23 It's like, well, I'm going to go through you, because if I, a black guy, who looks like straight to far, take $10,000 to the cops, they're going to ask a bunch of questions about, you know, how do I know this guy and, like, where do they get the money from? Where is I go through you? You're white. Nobody cares. Yeah. How many wishes do I get?
Starting point is 00:14:37 Yeah. How many wishes do. You know, where is the lamp? How do I access the cave of wonders? Like, yeah. Even though I am a criminal. Yeah, exactly. And so he's like, all right, sure, whatever.
Starting point is 00:14:51 And so he goes to do that. And we cut to that. evening, right, at Beaumont. I will say this scene is the first appearance of a character that will get very, very used to a Kangol hat. Get used to the Kangol hat. Yeah, yeah, a lot of bad hats. It's a certain shape.
Starting point is 00:15:08 Yeah, I don't know. Like a worst-looking beret. Didn't think it was possible. I was literally going to say it's like a sort of methadone detox from a beret. Oh, fuck, that's funny. What a horrible expression. But then later this night, they do indeed, they go and check. Baudel drops by Chris Tucker's house
Starting point is 00:15:25 and he goes, brother, what's up? Yeah, how you're doing? He doesn't say brother. He says the word. Yeah, he does. He says the word, 38 times. Yes, he says the word many, many times. Yes.
Starting point is 00:15:34 Now, whether you find that to be gritty and realistic or whether you find that to be as much of Quentin Tarantino inserting his own desires into the script, much like the toe rings. Yeah. But he gives him a GTA side mission. He's like, look, I've got to go and do this errand across town
Starting point is 00:15:51 and I need some muscle to help me out Don't worry about the details. They're not about to be important. It's very GTA. It is, isn't it? It's like, I need you to hide in the boot of my car with a shotgun and pop out when I open it and scare some people just to kind of, you know, make sure they don't fuck with this. The story he's trying to sell Beaumont on is that he's selling M60 machine guns to some Koreans, which I take to be an L.A. Riots joke, you know? Yeah, it must be, right? I assume so.
Starting point is 00:16:21 I assume this is a joke along the same. lines as the rooftop Korean stuff that a lot of right-wing gun chuds are into. But in any case, he convinces Beaumont to get to get into the plastic-lined trunk of his car. And it takes some doing, right? This is an argument. Yeah. But having done so, he's been wearing gloves the whole time as well, which is a real kind of failure of perception on Beaumont's car. Yeah, Pomont rolled the perception check and got one. Like, it's really good to imagine talking him into getting into the boot, like, talking him into leaving the flat, fine, talking him into coming over to the car. But like, then he opens the boot.
Starting point is 00:16:59 He's like, okay, now here's what we want from you. In order to make this plan with the Koreans go off, well, what's really going to help is if you shoot yourself twice. Yeah. Get in this suitcase and then twice in the back of the head. You can just take off your arms and legs. Again, I've had dates like this. I love this shot.
Starting point is 00:17:19 And we get in like a, like a crane shot that comes up. A wide tracking shot. Yeah. It's really funny. We see, we see Odell get in the car, start the car, drive around the block to some like, you know, waste ground behind Beaumont's apartment. Like the other side of the fence that he was just started, just goes around. And the car's playing music the whole time. So it kind of fades out and then fades back in and he's coming around.
Starting point is 00:17:43 And we don't zoom in or anything. Get out of the car. Pops the trunk, shoots Beaumont a couple of times, closes the trunk. Yeah. Really, really, really nice. Yeah. And he goes to see Robert Tenero, who is, I'm not entirely clear what is going on here. He's getting a striptease and a rocking chair, which is an inherently funny.
Starting point is 00:18:03 But there's no stripping. Yeah, Robert De Niro is currently in a blue velvet situation with someone who's doing a wreath of Franken. And fine, why not? But she's not taking her clothes off. She's just dancing. She's taken off the feather boa at least. But she, yeah, she's doing it. Maybe she works up to that.
Starting point is 00:18:20 I don't know. We only see a couple of seconds of it. Okay, I guess, yeah, you don't want to take all the clothes off on the first song. You went, yeah, okay. Exactly. First song, no clothes off. Second song, top off. Well, actually, he speaks to Adele later and implies that she's done several songs already, actually. So maybe.
Starting point is 00:18:35 Fuck, maybe she's just doing, like, karaoke. How many layers was she was in like a fucking 19th century diver's helmet? Aretha had the, like, big fur coat and stuff. So I feel like that covers a lot right there. Taking off my fur coat and sexy stripties to reveal a self. second smaller fur coat, the audience groans in my shit. I've got like the several layers of jackets, like a mafia guy. And he's rocking so fast.
Starting point is 00:19:00 He is rocking so fucking fast. I don't know what he's doing. Stimbing like a fucking kid on. We've seen how much weed this guy smokes. I would be so scared. But Samuel Jackson goes to see. He's like, hey, come out to the car. Helps.
Starting point is 00:19:15 And he opens the boot and he says, check that out. And Robert is here. Look at this. Who's that? And he's like, well, you know, this is a guy who bought some guns from me and the cops were going to give him every reason to blab and sell me out. So it was him or me and I killed him. And I'm showing you this because if we agree to do business together, I need you to just bear this in mind. It's just, it's a
Starting point is 00:19:38 really, really effective threat. And Robert Smith just looks at the corpse and goes, okay. It's completely wasted on him. And at this point, there's a certain amount of ambiguity as to what extent this is because Robert De Niro is like, you know, sort of very hardened criminal, right? And to what extent it's just he's just high, right? And just does not care. We will later find out it's a hundred percent the latter one, which I really like. Yeah, like the way he's stood, the way he's breathing. He loves casting like big name actors and just making them play stoners.
Starting point is 00:20:13 Yeah. That's really good. Yeah, with Brad Pitt, the last, and um... Yeah, yeah, he did. In true romance. Yeah, yeah. But then we get Guy I Love to See entering the movie because at LAX, Jackie's just landed on a flight from Mexico
Starting point is 00:20:27 and she gets stopped in the parking lot by two detectives, one of whom is from the ATF, and it's Michael Keaton. Michael Keaton. Yeah, Michael Keaton who makes this movie. He sells the fuck out of this script. It's incredible work. He makes some amazing facial expressions as well. I posted one of them on the Kill James Bond Blue Scarborough.
Starting point is 00:20:46 I'm like, that's fucking Beetlejuice, man. That's detective. Beetlejuice ATF? Fuck yeah. So good. Yeah. And so what we get is this kind of horrible, coercive search of her bag where she's like, can I say no? She's like, yeah, you can. And then we'll stand here with you while we go and get a warrant. Right. And so they search her bag and they find money. And they know how much money as well. They find it. It's $10,000. Yeah. $50,000. $50,000. $50,000 to you. And the other one who stood like a couple of feet away, whose name is like
Starting point is 00:21:19 Detective Mark Dargis from the LAPD, great stupid guy name. It looks like 10,000 of me. So it's like they knew she was coming through. They knew what the money was. She's just been caught. And Michael Keaton gives her quite some threats, which were pretty effective in 1990s
Starting point is 00:21:36 and even more so nice as well, look, you know, we could go and have a chat right now and you can help us out, or we could turn you over to customs. And he says, between you and me, those guys are not very nice, which is such an effective fucking threat then. and even more so now.
Starting point is 00:21:51 Yeah, Christ. Yeah. So they go and have a chat, which involves making her empty the contents of her bag, right? And in there is a bag of Coke as well. Yes. Which she initially doesn't seem to recognize. She goes, what's that shit? And I like that Michael Keaton searches her bag off screen.
Starting point is 00:22:11 He searches it below the table. Yeah. And I still don't know if he planted that or not, like on viewing it again. I think we later find out that. It is hers, but... Somebody else, the guy who gave her the money, put it in there as a gift to Melanie. In the moment, you totally buy that the cops have planted drugs on her. Yeah, legit.
Starting point is 00:22:28 Yeah, it's really nice. We also get some backstory on Jackie. She had some prize. She did some drug smuggling a few years ago, which is why she's now in her 40s working for the shittiest airline going. And, like, he's still working like these shitty jobs and hasn't moved up in the world. And they say, look, we want to talk to you about this guy, Beaumont. He's dead. Do you know anything?
Starting point is 00:22:46 And she's like, I'm not going to say a fucking word. and so they send it a prison. Yeah, she plays the full like, I'm not saying anything about my lawyer. She goes to start smoking, and one of them was like, you didn't ask. And so she asks, and they go, no, which sets up for later on when they let us smoke. The cops are such pieces of shit here.
Starting point is 00:23:04 It's so, it's so plausible, right? And as they say, you know, okay, sure, maybe you get like a year off of this if you don't tell us anything. But if I were in your position, I wouldn't think that I had a year to lose. And right now we can send you to jail. It's going to be like three weeks before the public defender gets around to you.
Starting point is 00:23:23 Nobody's going to get bail for you. So, you know, if that's what you want to do, that's what you want to do. And they send her to jail. Yeah, they charge her with possession with intent to distribute and set bail at like a $10,000. So she's going to be like stuck to fucking. Yeah. And the judge sets it at 10, which is, I guess, nice of him. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:44 But Ordel is in court to see this. and goes back to Pepsi Holiday Spice, which is apparently with a cinnamon finish released in 2004 in the US and Canada as a limited edition. And yeah, I know, sounds really good. I'll continue to bite my tongue until the four quarters mark where I'll make all of my opinions on Pepsi known. That's fine, that's fine.
Starting point is 00:24:06 Just not the brand, just the flavors. No, now, nobody has done a single good one since fucking Coke Cherry, right? Coke Cherry, first one out of the gate, nailed it, Everything since has been trying to recapture that never succeeded even once. I will say, though, Coke Zero Cherry is an inferior diet Dr. Pepper. I'm sorry. Dr. Pepper Zero and Diet Dr. Pepper?
Starting point is 00:24:29 I really enjoy a Coke vanilla. A vanilla flavoring? That's fine. It's very nice. Do you know, just that little bit extra? I will say, Pepsi, do you have Pepsi Nitro, the Girl Compsoda? That's true. To be fair, they do have some major points from making the Girl Cum Soda.
Starting point is 00:24:44 The Mango Pepsi is not bad. The Magopoepsies okay. The tropical is a little too sweet for me. I liked the ginger one. They had a ginger one once, but they don't do it anymore. Sounds nice. Because I'm a lilt girl, but you can never find those anymore. It's like Lucky Strike cigarettes.
Starting point is 00:24:59 Diet lilt, yeah. Imagine trying to find a diet lilt. My mom was a diet lilt. You sent me out into the town right now. I would not be on a gate of time. My dad went out years ago looking for diet lilt. I was a child, babe. He's gone on a fucking quest up a mountain.
Starting point is 00:25:16 showed up at graduation. You just had one. Because the worst thing is when you try and mix milk with milk to make lilk. Lelk. Oh, God. A bit of diet milk. Diet lilk.
Starting point is 00:25:30 Yeah, can I get a can I get a mocha latte with diet lique? And a large diet milk. Give me a tropical Russian. Is that whole milk or hot? No, no, diet lilk. Diet lilk. The thing about a tropical russian is you've got to drink it
Starting point is 00:25:46 so quickly before it curdles, and then it just curdles on the inside. Oh, God. There's not... I'm talking about milk clarifying a Pepsi right now. That's what you're talking about doing. The body on that, the mouth feel. Don't talk to me about the mouth feel. Oh, I'm so sorry.
Starting point is 00:26:06 Minutes in, we've gone from the... we've done the bullshot again. We've invented a horrible drink. No, I have to fucking make it and try it for Tumblr, shit. Oh, God. Yeah, but you have to find diet lilt first. Yeah, I'm going to find... I bet you could order it. That's what we're going to be drinking on stage at the next set of live shows, which are
Starting point is 00:26:26 in the works, by the way. Yeah. You can buy 24 cans of diet lill online. There you go. The first three rows will get thrown up on... Jesus Christ. Oh, Jesus. Oh, Jesus.
Starting point is 00:26:39 Oh, all right. She's a lilted lover? I don't know. Wait, is Liltz extinct? Sorry, what are you looking up right? Is Lilt gone? Is Lilt gone? It's like, can you not buy Lilts anymore? Is it dialed over?
Starting point is 00:26:54 You can get, I've seen Lilt, but like in back rooms of stuff. Oh, it's only out back. It's one of the secret sodas now. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's like the extra Rubicon flavors that they got in the back, you know? Like, you're not supposed to know about it unless you're like friends. Like, you can get the friends and family. You can get a diet little.
Starting point is 00:27:12 I'm so sorry, but you, you know, Lilt. Lilt died in 2023. What? Jesus Christ. It got re-branded. So now we're getting a three-year-old vintage. It got re-branted to fanta pineapple and grapefruit, which is letting the cat out of the bag way too hard, in my opinion. I also would like to read a line from the Wikipedia page of Lilt because, you know, whatever.
Starting point is 00:27:35 Please. Let's do that with our time. One advertisement in the late 1980s filtered a Lilt Man, a parody of a Milk Man, delivering Lilt in a Lilt Float, with songbearing the lyrics, Here Can comes the Lilt Man. So I guess... They were so close. You could get that at your door back in the day. My God.
Starting point is 00:27:52 Do you remember when the Lilt Man used to come around and fuck your mom? Do you remember when the Lilt man was hard? When a Lilt Man used to be hard. It really, it makes it stranger that your dad was going out looking for Lilt when you had a Lilt delivery. You know? And that guy was fucking your mom. Yeah. Like...
Starting point is 00:28:05 I think maybe my dad was just the... Pam Greer looks so fucking good in this... Pam Gris. Yeah, in prison fatigues. It's crazy. Ordel goes back to his belly. Bondsman, right? And he tries to, he tries to sell him on this idea that like, what has happened to Jackie Brown is unjust, right? And he's telling the truth. He's like, they charged her for possession
Starting point is 00:28:26 with intent, right, which is bullshit. And she didn't have intent to do this. And they would, they wouldn't charge a white person the same way. And Max goes, is white lilt supposed to make me forget I'm running a business? That's funny. Yeah. That's true. Thank you. Thank you. That's the result. I strive to achieve whenever I start a joke on this podcast. is for you to go completely deadpan. Yeah, that's funny. Like we're pushing it off the production line. Yep.
Starting point is 00:28:52 Get that fucking out of my side. I'm trying to talk about how to fuck Pam Greer. Everyone wants that. Obviously. It's like saying you want to breathe air. Yeah, that's actually so fucking reasonable. All right. You're right.
Starting point is 00:29:06 I'm wasting everyone's time saying a fucking useless sentence like I want to fuck Pam Greer. Mr. Pibbs says, what about, what about Beaumont? And Samuel Jackson's like, don't worry about Beaumont. He's fine. Yeah, this is also a great swing from Samuel Jackson. Ordel just goes, well, Beaumont's dead. So that money that I gave you to bail him out, you can just take that and shoot it over to Jackie, right?
Starting point is 00:29:30 Yeah, yeah, fine. Smart. Yeah, I guess, man, sure. And then he goes, is Jackie Brandt, was she bringing $50,000 into the country from Mexico for you? And he's like, no, of course not. It's crazy. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:29:41 We don't have attorney-client privilege, so no. Which is, I think the best answer. Just moved by her case. You know, it's really nice. So, Max pays the bail and he goes to pick her up, and he's instantly... Fools in love with her. Instantly. At first sight, because, of course, she looks like...
Starting point is 00:29:56 Reasonable reaction. Yeah, yeah. I thought of you as never a nova, because she's just got out of three weeks in jail, and I remember you saying when she looks kind of tired, which she does. She looks so tired. Oh, my God. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:07 I hate to say it, but, like, this is Quentin Tarantino's most sort of ethical approach to the kind of pervert that he is because at least now she has a reason to be barefoot. Yeah. But yeah, he's instantly smitten and he gives her his cards and offers to take her home and trying to fuck her is like,
Starting point is 00:30:28 hey, do you want to go to a bar? Right. And his first suggestion is a cop bar. His second suggestion is the Hilton by the airport, classy guy. And she says no above
Starting point is 00:30:42 because they're not dark enough. Yeah, because she's just going out of jail and she's like, I don't look great. Let's go to a dark bar. She's really nice. Pam Greer incorrectly says, I look like shit. You're like, yeah, yeah, yeah. Looking for cigarette, she goes into the glove box of his car where she
Starting point is 00:30:57 finds a gun, right? And ostensibly is just like cool, okay, cool gun. We go to her local bar. Yeah. And we find out that when Beaumont was arrested, he named Jackie. And she does, in fact, no, Samuel Lajaxon. It's not about
Starting point is 00:31:13 drugs. They want to know who killed Beaumont. That's what it's about. It's like, oh, okay, interesting. And they, yeah, she, so she tells Max everything. She tells Pepsi, someores, Toasty marshmallow, everything, right? And she is, I know, awful. Limited edition for the 2022 holiday season. It's a bad year. Bad year of Pepsi. Anyway, she, she tells him everything, right, including that O'Dell sells guns. Yeah. And that's why the ATF are after him, right? It's not for the A or the T, right? It's for the F. And she kind of seeks some advice, right, about what she should do from him.
Starting point is 00:31:51 And he's kind of, you know... He's really horny. He's just really into her. About this, but also very into her, yes. Sweet. When he drops her off at home, Samuel Jackson is watching. When Max pulls away, he gets... He's got a different pair of gloves.
Starting point is 00:32:06 Yeah. He goes... Put a pair of gloves on. And a gun. And he goes to see her. And she's like, yeah, you're associate in Mexico. He said, I'm really sorry about that. Did you tell the cops anything about me?
Starting point is 00:32:19 Yeah. Second, number one, don't love that you're wearing gloves when you came to talk to me. Second, don't love that you're turning the lights off as you follow me around the house. Don't love you doing that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's trying to be sort of slick about this. He's like, do you have any reason to be nervous about me? Right?
Starting point is 00:32:36 He's getting up very, very close to her. And she points the gun that she stole from the glove box of her. Pepsi X energy cola? We get this terrible. I don't know if I like this or not. I think I don't because we would be able to figure it out if not. This terrible like split screen where fucking what the founder 2.0 is going home in his car and like opens up the glove box and sees that the gun isn't there as we hear her like click the hammer. It's really nice.
Starting point is 00:33:07 It's really nice. It's just in the dark and Odell is just like putting his hands very close to her neck. and then we just hear the click and he says, so they're like, is that what I think it is? She's what do you think it is? He's like, I think it's a fucking gun on my dick. And she's like, yeah, it is. Sit out, fuck her.
Starting point is 00:33:23 I love her code switching. Yeah, me too. This is one instance of the N-word as well that I feel like the movie really earns is her calling him it here. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's just really, really emphasizing like, oh, no, she is being 100% real about this
Starting point is 00:33:40 and she will shoot him, right? Yeah. And so she holds him at gunpoint. And essentially, like, to make him calm down and not murder her enough to, like, sell him on an angle, right? And we start to get the picture here, which is everybody that Jackie is talking to, she is working a different angle on. I'm playing all sides, so I always come out on top. Yeah. She's like, look, the cops, they're on to you, they're stiffen around.
Starting point is 00:34:09 So we need to get your money out of Mexico. He's got a quarter of a million dollars stashed in Mexico. Half a million dollars. Excuse me. Half a million dollars stashed in Mexico. She says, we need to get it all out. And I've got a plan to help you out. So, okay, cool.
Starting point is 00:34:23 And the next day, Fanta Grapefruit comes by to get his gun back. And we get this really sweet domestic scene where she's like in her dressing gun. She's like, do you want a cup of coffee and put some music on? Yeah, she's like code switched back in a way that's really, really endearing. And you sort of see both sides of. But she has sold Odell on this kind of deal, right, where she will go to prison for him, but he will pay her $100,000 to do it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:52 Right. And so she has to talk to the cops, and she has a reason to be talking to the cops. Yeah. But she's going to sort of take the heat for it. Yeah. He offers to let her keep the gun. She's like, no, it's okay. I got one because she took Tamil Jackson's last night as well.
Starting point is 00:35:08 He's like, where did you? He said, don't worry about it. Yeah. I got it last night. She's like, you went out this morning and bought a gun? She's like, no. Just got it. They have this really sweet chat about aging and getting old.
Starting point is 00:35:21 She's like, do you? Are you scared of getting older? And he's like, no, are you? She's like, yeah, Ben, he's like, you look great. Like, it's just really, really nice. He talks about getting like a hair transplant, right? And he does some themes about being transgender where he's like, I did it look more like myself than I do.
Starting point is 00:35:40 And then I look in the mirror. I see myself and I don't think about it so much. Yeah. You know, which is nice. He's got some gender euphoria. Yeah. He says to Pam, he's like, listen, I guarantee you that right now, apart from maybe an afro, you look identical to how you did at 17.
Starting point is 00:35:56 She's like, I don't know. Gained a bit of weight around the ass. And he's like, ain't nothing wrong with that, which I do really respect as well. Yeah, he sort of like makes a bit more than subliminal the I want to fuck Pam Greer thought that every human being, you know. it has over the age of 18. She responds well, she goes and puts on some music. She does, yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:17 And the music is. The delphonics. The music, yeah, it's the delphonics. It fucking locks in his mind as well. Like, every time we come across to, oh, I don't know, crush a banana flavor. Why not? Pepsi pineapple mint, a very, at least in the Czech Republican Romania during the summer. What was going on in 2022?
Starting point is 00:36:38 What were they doing? 2020 I mean Yeah it was just immediately Post pandemic you know we didn't know what we were doing We had some strange ideas about what a Pepsi could be Yeah But every time we cut across to him In the movie he's like he's in his car
Starting point is 00:36:52 He's playing the Dolphonics He went to like picks him up And he's like listening to her music It's really sweet That's nice I've had this whenever I'm down bad for a girl You know sometimes there's a song involved Yeah oh yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:37:04 Yeah I get it happens It happens I get it too lead to some to some weird places But like... Only if the song is... Yeah. The song... If the song's crazy, just don't worry about it.
Starting point is 00:37:13 Just drop it. Yeah. Yeah. She tells him, right, that, like, the idea of starting over again is the scariest thing to her, right? And scarier than Ordel could be. And I really, really like this. So she goes back to the cops, right, to try and sell them on this. Ray is wearing a fucking tunnel snake's ass hip here.
Starting point is 00:37:33 Yeah. He's got, like, a leather jacket on that. He's dressed like Indian. Diana Jones's son, Mutt. It's... Who died in Vietnam? Yeah. Who died in Vietnam?
Starting point is 00:37:44 That's correct. It's crazy that Mutt died in Vietnam. Fighting for the People's Army of Vietnam as well. But so... He died trying to ramp a motorcycle over a U.S. Army convoy. Which is crazy, because the last time he wrapped a motorcycle over a convoy, it went really well. You'd think Mutt would be great at jungle warfare, but no. It seemed like a good idea.
Starting point is 00:38:06 You weren't there. We all thought it would work. Yeah. They're going to end up doing the next Indiana Jones movie, and then he has to do the Rambo two thing. They'd go into the jungle and rescue Mutt. Who's actually missing me a time. We'll do this.
Starting point is 00:38:20 She needs permission. She needs permission. She needs permission. We'll get to later. We'll do that later. We'll do this on stage is what we'll do. Oh, nice. No.
Starting point is 00:38:28 So she tries to, what she needs is permission to leave the country, right? So she can keep working. Because work doesn't know she's been arrested, right? she hasn't lost her job from it yet. So she tries to sell Ray Nicolette, you know, Michael Keaton on this. And because he wants to fuck her, because everyone wants to fuck Pam Greer, he's like, yeah, okay, I think we could do that. But in exchange, you have to give us Ordel, right?
Starting point is 00:38:56 And she's like, this is what she wanted. We then cut back to Venice Beach, right? Where Ordel has to go out. So he leaves Melanie. with Robert De Niro, right? And they're watching a movie. I don't remember what it is, and I'm not autistic enough to care to look it up.
Starting point is 00:39:14 But it's a scene of a geese. Yeah. Yeah, slapping a woman around. And it's like, huh, interesting. Quentin, are you kind of laundering the stuff that you want to shoot through like another lens? And could you also apply that to, for instance, some of the racial stuff that you're doing here?
Starting point is 00:39:30 Interesting. Anyway. The look on Simon L. Jackson's face when he leaves is he's just like, I know you guys might. I know you guys might fuck, he's like, cool. See you later, man. This is gangster polyamory. One thing I do like and do appreciate is that you get, if you want it,
Starting point is 00:39:44 a really clean drop of Robert De Niro saying six, seven here. I did not get that. That's funny to me. Just putting that in a compilation with Blade Runner. Melanie says to Robert De Niro, she's like, have you ever seen the movie entrapment? Have you seen old man sex? Old man sex.
Starting point is 00:40:04 she wants the old man penis. There's a bit where he's like looking at a photo of her on like an old photo of her and she asks him how old he thinks she is in the photo and she's 14 in it. He says, I thought you were at least 16 which is a sort of portrait of them both that is both really gross about them
Starting point is 00:40:27 and also gross in the telling, right? I think it's sort of... It's like no one comes off well here. Yeah. Yeah, and least of all, least of all A guy, Rick and Directino, who is trying to, I think, suggest something about a woman who has been formed out of being a slut since she was a teenager, right? Since she was a child, right? That's gross.
Starting point is 00:40:47 And it's not doing that in an empathetic way. It's doing that for comedy. However, at least he remembers that these are losers, right? Yes. Well, they're smoking this massive, fucking stupid-looking bong, which is some of the most juvenile infantile shit you can. do, get a vape, have a tincture or something, Christ, you're grown adult. Didn't have vapes back then, you know? Yeah, true.
Starting point is 00:41:10 It was a simpler time. They didn't even have, like, flavors of pets. But then she just turns them and she says, do you want to fuck? And he goes, yeah, and then we just get a title card. Three minutes later. Love that. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:22 The fact that he's, he's not enjoying it, it's not good. There's a horrible piece of, like, wet foley art as he calls out. He's, like, kind of wheezing a bit because he smokes too much. weed and he's old it's really kind of horrible she just goes that was fun yeah just right back to him he goes that really hit the spot in a way that
Starting point is 00:41:46 is totally insincere fantastic just like yeah just bad just bad stuff and then like he starts trying to trying to get high and she's immediately starting it on Lady Macbeth shit it's like yeah I'm fucking because she's a snake I'm busy
Starting point is 00:41:59 yeah she's like you know Ordel's doing all this he's got all this money in Mexico that he's bringing in, like, we should take it. And he's just like getting high. He's like, oh, that's interesting. I do like that the contempt for him is, you know, her contempt for him is racialized, you know, and she's kind of code switching as well a bit, you know? Her accent gets a bit pasha for this bit.
Starting point is 00:42:20 And she's talking about how he moves his lips when he reads, right? And so he's not that smart. He's streetwise, but that's different, right? And so she's trying to get him to betray Odell and, like, rob him. She's fucking Iago the pirate. She's Gilbert Godfrey.
Starting point is 00:42:37 She's going to fucking betray Jafar in the third one. Yeah. Yeah. Classic. But meanwhile, Jackie meets with Samuel Jackson and she's got it all planned out.
Starting point is 00:42:47 She's like, okay, we need to get your money out of Mexico. The cops know we're going to do this, right? So we're going to do like a rehearsal run with $10,000. And then I'm going to hand it off to your contact.
Starting point is 00:42:58 And then we're going to move the whole lot after that. And we're going to do like a series of complicated. switcheroos so that the cops are going to arrest somebody who's only carrying 10,000, but actually will sneak out half a million for you. Cool. We'll let them follow the wrong one. And because this is a Quentin Tarantino conversation, it immediately becomes about movies or about Hollywood. Yeah. Right. Because she demands a fee, right, which is 10% of the basis that,
Starting point is 00:43:26 you know, he calls them partners and she goes, I'm not your partner. I'm your manager. Because I'm managing. Yeah. She's saying the manager. I want 15%. He goes, no, you're 10. You're thinking of an agent. Yeah. And so they have this whole back and forth about this kind of standard rates for managers and agents. And it's funny the third time is all I'll say. Quentin Tarantino has been doing this for 30 to 50 years.
Starting point is 00:43:53 I haven't been counting. Also, she would definitely be an agent because she's handling his money, which the manager doesn't do. Mm-hmm. See. Okay, sure. Do you want to hear some more Pepsi flavors? Like, there's some crazy ones in Japan. Hang on, hang on, hang on.
Starting point is 00:44:09 Let's get a clean take of this. That's funny. She's not wearing a Kangol to meet with him the first time, and I will say she makes up for that mistake on the second meeting. She makes sure to get a older one. And this is where we get the cut away of... You want to be on the same sort of Kangol level as anyone you're meeting with, you know?
Starting point is 00:44:28 Like, if Kangol and then Kangol, if no Kangol. Then no can go, you know? Yeah, exactly. Meanwhile, Max is still down outrageous because he leaves Jackie a message with all of his numbers. He's like, this is my phone number. This is really funny. This is like the seven million step process to page by page. It's really sweet.
Starting point is 00:44:48 I act like this and to do this. Here's my number. Here's a copy of that number in case you accidentally throw that number in the trash. Here's my email. Here's my ham radio call sign. You can reach me. You can reach me on, I'm on, like, here's my smart fridge. You can text me on that if you, you know, if you want.
Starting point is 00:45:08 It's just, it goes on for a really long time and your heart bleeds for him. It's so good because the whole shot is just like, it's literally just Pam walking around her apartment. Yeah. Just like going for room to room and just hearing it playing. She doesn't roll her eyes at it or anything like that. No, no. You can kind of sense that like, okay. Like, I would be exactly this embarrassing if I was.
Starting point is 00:45:30 If I had had a chance meeting with Pam Greer and I was trying to expand that into maybe a relationship, I would be exactly disappointed. Yes, yeah, no, absolutely. They even end up having a conversation a bit later on where she says, you know, she explains her plan to him. And she said, would you be tempted to walk away with half a million dollars? And he's like, maybe, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:45:50 She's like, well, look, it's all been acquired illegally anyway. It's not like you're stealing it from anyone who needs it. The cops aren't really bothered about the money. They want to get Samuel L. Jackson behind bars with the guns, they're not going to miss it. If my plan goes off well, they're not even going to know that half a million is there. So he's just like, well, yeah, I guess I would. Like, I'm tired of being a bounty hunter bail bondsman.
Starting point is 00:46:12 Yeah. It's interesting. Her pitch to him depends on asking him about Ray, the cop first, right, about whether he, you know, whether she can trust him not to steal the money. To which he says, you know, astutely, that he's just a young guy having fun being a cop. he's more interested in Ordel than the money, which is just correct. It's a correct read on him, you know. Yeah, we, Michael Keenan is so fucking good.
Starting point is 00:46:40 We get that from him just by the way he moves. Like in the, yeah, there's a shot of him coming down a corridor at one point, and the way he's moving is like, you're a young cop and you're like, you've got the first taste of something like into it. He's such a good fucking actor. I love him. We also get a great scene between Ordel and Lewis, which is Robert Deere's character, where he's like,
Starting point is 00:46:59 All right, I left you alone of her. Did you fuck her? And he goes, yeah, fuck her. And he goes, did she start doing lady moot-beth shit at you? And he goes, yeah, she started doing her bookshund. He's like, I knew she was going to do that. Don't worry, I know. Can handle it.
Starting point is 00:47:12 It's really nice. And he starts trying to like explain, but it's better to have someone that he doesn't, that he like understands rather than someone he trusts. He's like, I know Melanie's going to do Melanie's shit. I know this. It's like, it's interesting that De Niro says explicitly that he felt more strongly about the not, about Melanie
Starting point is 00:47:33 not being Aaudel's girlfriend than about any of the like betraying him stuff. Like he felt more strongly about the idea of sort of like cuckolding him. Yeah. Right? And it's like, oh, this guy who didn't even really enjoy the sex with the woman
Starting point is 00:47:49 was thinking about this man the whole time. Yeah. Right. And he's like, guy who has been in an entirely homosocial environment for the last four years. Like, guy who seems, you know, in as much as he's invested in anything, which is not much, mostly interested in what this guy thinks of him, you know? Yeah, interesting. Interesting, Matt.
Starting point is 00:48:09 But do a little trial run of this thing where they... And the contempt to do this at the largest indoor mall in the world, you know? This is some great mall shots here. So Jackie has $10,000 in a bag, and then this girl comes by, it's one of Samuel L. Jackson's other squeezes. She's like 19 and she's really nervous, right? They do this exchange where they swap the bags and the cops follow her, Charanda. They follow her out.
Starting point is 00:48:37 But Max is also on hand. And he sees that Sharanda swapped bags with another lady as well. So he follows the real bag and it's like, yeah, this could work. Like she could conceivably, you know, get this money past the cops. It's really, really, really good. Yeah, absolutely. So she pitches this to her. Right, again.
Starting point is 00:49:00 And he tells her that, you know, she's rationalizing. And she says, well, that's what you do is that go through with the shit you start, is you rationalize. It's this little sort of glimpse into how she's sort of keeping all of these plates spinning at the same time. Yeah. Like putting the anyway, the end of the script. You just rationalize it, you know? Tell you stuff.
Starting point is 00:49:20 Yeah, it's fine. It makes sense. And meanwhile, Robert De Niro and Melanie are planning to do their own switcheroo in the changing room. with Pan. Everyone's planning to do like switcheroo shit with bags. You don't really need to fucking worry about it.
Starting point is 00:49:34 This is fine. And then then Pam like loads the fucking trap, right? So she goes to dinner with Michael Keaton and she says Incredible red dress. Yeah, she tells him we're going to be bringing in
Starting point is 00:49:48 $50,000. And this is a lie. Like she's actually going to be bringing in $550,000 so that when the cops pick up, Charanda, they're going to find the 50K, and she's going to do a switchery with Max so that they get to keep $500,000. And this is intercut with her talking to Max about this.
Starting point is 00:50:10 Yes. And he's kind of warning her, because again, they're both quite good at reading people. We know that from Max sort of reading or down in the beginning, right? We know this from everything else about her. And so she correctly deduces cops love feeling like... in this case, Ordel is scared of them, right? And so that's her logic here. He's so scared he's bringing in all the money, right?
Starting point is 00:50:36 Whereas his is, yeah, but a good cop also never lets you know that they know that you're lying, right? And so you get this kind of Michael Keaton, who is just, he's playing this character pretty straightforwardly at this point, but is a complete cipher to us at this point. You don't know for certain. It's really nice that they have this. They also have this scene in the car where he's like, Jackie don't do anything stupid, you know? Like, just make sure that you do what you tell us you're going to do.
Starting point is 00:51:04 She's like, I wouldn't lie to you, Michael Keaton. I loved you in Birdman. You were really great. You were fantastic. You know, I thought you were one of the best Batman's. I'm sorry about the Flash, but I thought you were one of the best bits in it. You know? Yeah, he's counting for like controlled 10K from the last drop.
Starting point is 00:51:20 And she's going like, do you ever get tempted? She just takes on it. And he's like, yeah, sometimes. But that would be super illegal. Don't ever do that. And he's like marking the bills. Yeah, it's really, really cute. We get a really good, like, title card of the money exchange brackets for real this time.
Starting point is 00:51:38 It's unusually cute. You know, it's like a sort of tone that you don't really see Quentin Tarantino hit otherwise. Yeah. It's really cute. And she hides the 500,000 at the bottom of her bag, which the cops don't search. She's like, they're not going to search it. It's really, really nice. I'm a book.
Starting point is 00:51:58 It's pretty good. Robert De Niro and Melanie are running late. Yeah. Melanie has inveigled her way into being one of the like handoff girls for this plot to get her herself involved in it and she is running late. Like we see Robert Niro in the hallway just be like, come on. Yeah, there's a great bit where Odell, like, the first time Odell calls, right? There's a beautiful, beautiful bit of a clearly extremely high Robert De Niro trying to work out
Starting point is 00:52:27 to hang up a phone and it just goes on for like a second too long and I really really like it. So before the official exchange, she goes into a changing room and she tries on a very swanky new suit and that's her signal to Max who is waiting and she does a little hand off with Melanie and gives her the bag that she's told Samuel Jackson that's going to have the half a million in it. It doesn't. And she even gives Melanie like a little extra like 5,000 on the top, right? And she puts the real half a million in a big bag and leaves it in the
Starting point is 00:53:03 changer room for Max to go and pick a bag. The suit that she is changing into. Oh, my God. Yes, girl. Okay, so Jackie Brown is on a sort of progressive glow up throughout this movie, right? Like, each fit is better than the one before it, and it was already good, you know?
Starting point is 00:53:22 Yeah, and I invite you to consider, but even out of her worst, she was Pam Greer. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So she commits to this act so thoroughly, though, too, because when she comes out of the changing room, she kind of takes a second and like readies herself for this performance.
Starting point is 00:53:37 She comes out of the change room wearing this suit in a big hurry. And like very nervously pays the tend to like, I've got to go. I've got to go. I've got to go. And just like, pace is like, yeah, sure, here it is. I've got to run. And then runs out, runs into the middle of the mall. And then yells like, Michael Keaton, Michael Keaton, where are you?
Starting point is 00:53:50 Michael Keaton comes out. She goes like, beetle juice, beetle juice. And he appears. Right. And then she's like, Melanie. ran off with the $50,000. She ran into the change room, stole it and ran away.
Starting point is 00:54:01 And she's committed to this so thoroughly because obviously the cops are going to go back and check with the fitting room attendants. Was she nervous? Was she in a hurry? And the fitting room attendant is going to cooperate every fucking step of this.
Starting point is 00:54:11 Meanwhile, Max, Max has just fucking walked off with the half a million. He just went into the change. He's like, hey, my wife left a bag in here. Can I grab it? And she was like, yeah, sure. Walks away with half a million and cash. We do this sequentially, right?
Starting point is 00:54:22 So like, we get to the ATF coming in. We then go back. to Lewis and Melanie, right, coming in. And she is, she is on him, right? He is, he's changed into a slightly bigger asshole fit with like his hair tied back. Mm-hmm. And it's sort of like he's, he's tense, he's stressed,
Starting point is 00:54:41 and you see all the little things, like the sort of his, his, like, car door sticks a bit, you know? It's just irritation piled on irritation. Yeah. And she is bugging him, she's needling him. Yeah. The bit that really wound him, in particular, is as they're waiting outside the changing room,
Starting point is 00:54:58 she goes, job a little too much for you. Yeah. And this really, like, hurt. Yeah, he threatens to knock her out, actually. Like, he's rapidly tired of Fiskebidi-Risnes. And she says, like, take a chill pill and he goes, fuck you when you're a chill pill, right? And then when they come out of the wall,
Starting point is 00:55:15 carrying what they think is the money, she's like, do you remember where we parked? She's, like, teasing him that he can't remember where they parked the fucking car. Calm down, John. Calm down. Yeah. Listen to your wife. He like insists on taking the bag from her as well, like as they're leaving.
Starting point is 00:55:30 He needs to be in control of this so bad. He's such an idiot. He's so stressed. No wonder you went to jail. You fucking idiot. Like. And he goes, if you say one more thing to me, I'm going to shoot and kill you. And she goes, Lou, and he immediately just bam bam.
Starting point is 00:55:45 Yeah. And then just walks away. She's a dead in the pocket. This is horrible. Yeah. Terrible. This is. I was halfway through writing rattled when I had to put, oh fuck.
Starting point is 00:55:53 Yeah. Yeah. You see, you see Taranty and I sort of like walking. us all the way up to this, right? And it's meant to be horrible. It's meant to be this guy is so deeply kind of insecure that he can't stand it anymore. Right? And has sort of, you know, lashed out and killed this woman sort of uncontrollable way. But it also, that's all premised on, man, women are sometimes so annoying that you have to kill us. That's what I was going to say is it goes a long way to making it her fault though. It like
Starting point is 00:56:24 takes a lot of time and makes sure that it's her fault. It really, because it has the kind of nihilism in it that I think is going to poison the rest of his career where it's like, oh, this guy's a piece of shit, but she's a bitch, right? And so, okay, like, yeah, you shouldn't have shot her, but like when women are annoying, right, okay, it's not good when you kill us, but it is maybe funny or ironic. Yeah, I suppose the film does put this opinion in the mouth of its villain,
Starting point is 00:56:54 but when Samuel Jackson meets up with Robert Deere and finds out, he's like, I shot Melanie, I just shot it twice. He says, you couldn't just hit her, which I'm like, oh. Yeah. Yeah, it's like, thanks, man. Don't love that. If there is a villain saying that, I guess. And then he says, well, if you had to do it, you had to do it.
Starting point is 00:57:10 But as long as she's dead, she doesn't survive because then she's going to, you know, testify and shit. And Lewis does not know that she's dead. Yeah, I guess that he doesn't know for sure. And like he clearly lies to Odell about this. He's like, yeah, pretty sure. He's like rattled, right? And
Starting point is 00:57:29 what's interesting as well is that you know, he's he sort of, he hasn't pull the car over to the side of the road and a real like, come on, let's go talk on the roof kind of moment. Yeah, a real like, hey, let's just stop driving for a second. Why are you pulling on that pair of gloves? Because he checks the bag and it's got,
Starting point is 00:57:46 it's got 50,000 in it. And he's like, where's the rest? And he's like, that's all. But that's all it is. And you see him kind of put this together very methodically of like, you're not, you're not robbing me with her, right? Like, she's not just in a room somewhere with the money. You shot her conveniently. She's just not here because you shot her, right?
Starting point is 00:58:06 After you've been getting on someone. You're not robbing me on your own because I don't think you're smart enough to do that. So it's Jackie Brown, right? It's got to be Pepsi Max. It's got to be a fucking Jackie Brown. Yeah. Like, we have a long zoom on his face as he's thinking. Fucking Mr. Pibbs.
Starting point is 00:58:20 Yeah, he mentions having seen Pepsi latte sold in Thailand. Mentions having seen Pepsi latte in the room and sort of like as he's obviously seething. You know, he had given him a sort of like ironic salute, which also pissed him off even more, you know, being sort of like mocked by a sort of older man. As Samuel Ler Jack was like, what? You saw him there and didn't mention it. These two know each other, you fucking asshole. Obviously they're at it together. And he's like, look, I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:58:47 To be fair. What was I supposed to do? I'm fucking high all the time. And then we do get this good shot because they're in the front two seats of this like VW van. And we've been in the back for like, let's say like a solid two minutes and uncut shot. And then they don't cut away from the seminar Jackson just shoots him in the gut. And you see the blood go across the windscreen. It's really, really nice.
Starting point is 00:59:05 You kind of see him go, oh, that's a good idea. And then take that from himself for Pulp Fiction laser. A lot of people are shot in cars in his movies. And he's had a long time to get it right, basically. Yeah, no, for real. This is one of them. A thing I really, really like is after he shoots him, Ordeal kind of leans over to him and says,
Starting point is 00:59:26 what the fuck happened to you? You used to be beautiful. Like, this is the, yeah, you used to be the Robert De Niro from Heat, you know? Yeah. A Ronan. You used to be, like, a Ronan. You used to be scary. You used to be good.
Starting point is 00:59:42 And now you just want to get high all the time and you're a fucker. Remember when you were in the untouchables? Remember when you that? That was great. It was a good movie. It was a good movie. Incredible. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:52 Now you're just sitting in a room in Venice Beach with like a framed picture of a marijuana leaf on the wall. What do you need to remind yourself of it? Yeah, I like that this is about these guys mostly kind of doing it for each other, you know? It's something that we started exploring with reservoir dogs and we're kind of not really willing to let go of yet, is that kind of homo-sociality, you know? Sweet. But so, yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:17 Yeah. Then we see Odell leave the car and walk away. be cut forward to Jackie talking to Michael Keaton and being like, look, this is your fault. He didn't tell me what to do if something went wrong. Michael Keaton... He's like, I didn't. Fuck.
Starting point is 01:00:30 Rescues this scene, right? Because if you just think about it as written, right, it's quite dry. Right? It's he wants to press her on this. He realizes that she has an answer to all of the questions and is forced to let her go, but kind of ambiguous as to whether he knows what's going on and he's like, you'd better hope that, like, we find Ordel before Ordale finds you because
Starting point is 01:00:51 Lewis is dead now. Natural. But the way that he delivers this involves, like, he puts so much physicality into it. He's walking around the room. He's, like, climbing onto the chair and standing on the back of it. He's, like, coming down, crouching in corners. Actually, he's ruffled.
Starting point is 01:01:08 Yeah. It's really, really nice. He reminds me, Michael Keaton and this, and it might just be the T-Shah, but he reminds me of Jello Biafra, the lead singer of the Dead Kennedys. Like there's something kind of Northern California punk going on here to me.
Starting point is 01:01:23 I really like it. I think it's the way you learn his arms hang a little bit. I don't know. Yeah, there's a kind of swagger or something. It's very, yeah, it's very good. But she brazenes this out. I mean, we see that she has to act nervousness. Easy.
Starting point is 01:01:40 Slams on the table and he goes, and you don't know anything about what happened of his 50,000. And she goes like, no. And we see him think about it and be like, that's entirely possible. Fuck. Okay. But he's like, his face. Oh, his expressions are so good.
Starting point is 01:01:56 Just perfect. Because as far as he knows, Samuel Jackson and $50,000 is just in the wind. And he doesn't even know about the other half a million. He's like, did you do something? And she's like, no, what are you talking about? Like, I just, I went and I bought the suit. I had a good reason to buy the suit. Would you take a polygraph?
Starting point is 01:02:09 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Go and ask the fucking store attendant and like, she'll tell you everything. Yeah, it's really, really cute. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Samuel Jackson is writing out. I will say what she does, he does add in, we found Melanie dead with that extra money that you slipped her in her pocket. And he says out that that went a long way towards corroborating your story.
Starting point is 01:02:31 And there's a degree of like, did you kill her? I don't know. I don't think so. I don't think you can see it as a reasonable outcome that she would have been killed for that. But you set her up to take the fall for you a little bit there, Jackie. Really, really good. Yeah. So, O'Dell calls Pepsi Summer Chill
Starting point is 01:02:48 and threatens him, right? Because he has worked all of this out. He's worked out that they're together. And he kind of tries to... Ice cold. Yeah, that too. And so he... Fuck off.
Starting point is 01:03:04 He says also, I want my $10,000 bail bond back. It's really, really fun. So Pepsi... Oh, God, yeah, yeah, he is. Pepsi, just Pepsi classic. I'm on the soda lover's wiki hitting a random button and I got Dr. Pete, which is apparently a Dr. Pepper knockoff by Soda Stream. I was like, that doesn't help me at all.
Starting point is 01:03:23 The Israeli Dr. Pepper? There's a button I can press on the internet that will just give me a random soda. Yeah, it's a soda lover's... The Israeli Dr. Pepper is Dr. Pete. That's... Wow, okay. Dr. Pete. He did Wonders as Mayor of South Bend.
Starting point is 01:03:37 So he has Winston, his skip tracer and... He does. Bodyguard. Find where Ordel is. Goes to him. Immediately gets held at gunpoint, but is just playing it cool the whole time. This is pure like PI shit.
Starting point is 01:03:55 Right? He's, here's your $10,000. Here's your receipt. Here's a semi-plausible narrative. It's really funny that it gives him the receipt. It's like, here's an iPad. You can have to press one of these three buttons to determine whether you give me $50, $18 or $20.
Starting point is 01:04:11 It's like, oh, why am I doing? It just, it's just, it's just, it's just, it's just, it's just, it's just, it's just, Why am I fucking do this? Here's a very plausible, what is a semi-pawsable story about why Jackie Brown is at my office and you have to come to the office to collect your money, right? She's like, she wants to give you the money back. It's, Melanie tried to fuck it up,
Starting point is 01:04:29 but Jackie actually gonna rescue the situation. We've got the money. Come to my office and get it back. And you cut back to the cops loving, thinking that someone is afraid of them. And that being sort of turned around, you think equally about Ordel luring Beaumont out to get killed and that getting turned around.
Starting point is 01:04:45 That's what I'm saying. He does the exact opposite as what we get in Ordell's Seward-Bomont, where he talks him into going to a second location with him. Incidentally, his hair has fallen out of his ponytail by now, like an Ace Attorney witness. It looks like ass. It's really funny. It's really good.
Starting point is 01:05:00 There's genuinely, the scene where he calls Max Pepsi, like, we get a slow zoom in on, like, Ordell's bald spot. Yeah. To be his half of the conversation. By the way, by the way, Sharanda is. there and not, but not present because she's high. And as Ordel says, you know, don't worry about her, she doesn't even know you're there, right?
Starting point is 01:05:23 Which we're literally, we are using women as set dressing, but we are doing that in part to establish that this is a bad guy, right, who uses women. But so he agrees to go to Pepsi salted caramel's Bell Bond's office. Can't recommend that less. Jackie is practicing pulling the gun, she's aura farming. aura farming. She's got a gun in the desk and she's in the dark, like practicing, she's not happy with it any of the time she tries. It's always kind of too slow. She's never really like feeling it, you know? Yeah. And so she's sitting in the dark and as they get up to
Starting point is 01:05:56 the thing, they're listening to their song. And you see or Delphonic go, I didn't know you liked the Delphonic's. He's like, yeah, they're pretty good. Um, by the way, as, as he gets out of the car, Max, because he's wearing the jacket as well, And it's like slightly in shadow. He looks like Andy Burnham. It's crazy how much he looks like Andy Burnham here. A little bit, yeah, a little bit. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:19 He's like, look, we're going to get you the money, and then we're going to implement the most transphobic government since the 1980s. And then everyone's going to tell me how great I am. Mm-hmm. Sure. And Ordel's like, if there's anything wrong, I'm going to shoot you. Yeah. Right.
Starting point is 01:06:34 Fair enough. Sure, of course you will. Yeah. Make sense. I hear anyone crack a Pepsi can even once. Bang. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 01:06:40 I'm Diet Coke only. motherfucker. They go in. Jackie, Jackie is sitting, and I'm not that Coca-Cola life shit that came in the green sort of brand of. Crystal post.
Starting point is 01:06:51 You try and stop a fucking protest. I'm going to fucking shoot you. Yeah, with Stavia. Fuck was that. So they get into the thing. Jackie is sitting in the dark, and as he approaches her, she does,
Starting point is 01:07:04 not a suicide by cop, but a murder by cop. I guess in self-defense, though. Yeah. And goes, Ray, he's got a gun. enter Ray who shoots Odell, just in the dark. Michael Keaton goes,
Starting point is 01:07:17 I'm Batman, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, shoots him dead. Family MacDakson makes a great noise too. He goes, oh! It's good. Like, Golden Eye fucking NPC villain. It's really good. Amazing.
Starting point is 01:07:29 And we get a shot from his POV, like on the floor looking up as Ray and Jackie look over him. It's really nice. Interesting choice of shot that. Yeah, for real. She thanks him for getting their first. Right. And he's having a good time being a cop as Max identified. Yeah, he feels good about himself. He's like, yay, I'm the cop. I killed someone.
Starting point is 01:07:51 You could tell as well the way he like puts two fingers on Samuel Jackson's neck. He says he's dead. He goes, yeah, he's dead. He's just like, yeah, I'm a fucking cop. I fuck. Yeah. Yeah. So I've let these idiots tell themselves a story. Yeah. An Ordell was armed, but it kind of doesn't matter. You know, it's like it's murder in self-defense, as we. say, right? It's premeditated, but yeah. Anyway, but then, the cops, you know, the cops leave, and we cut forward a bit.
Starting point is 01:08:20 Three days. To our boy, Pepsi hot chocolate. Oh, huh. Only 2,000 cans of this flavor are known to exist. Can we do something about the Pepsi CEO? It's like, just let's deal with this. What are we doing? Well, you have to shoot down two planes, right?
Starting point is 01:08:38 What? But there's a truth I've been building up to here, which is maybe more important and more emotionally resonant than the old man sex you do have. Like jazz, is the old man sex you don't have even though you really want to, right? Because Jesse... This is heartbreaking. Yeah. She goes to see him. And like, she has her share of the money.
Starting point is 01:09:07 He very loyally gave her all of her share He took, I think something like 10% for himself And she's like She's got a car Yeah Like she's like yeah This was outside the fucking insurance And the keys were both in it
Starting point is 01:09:21 So free car For me, great I'm going to go to Milan The passport cues are really bad Because the European entry system isn't working right now Because after Brexit So we're going to wait for take two hours
Starting point is 01:09:31 But I'm still going to go to Italy And have a good time Do you want to come with me And he's like Nah I'm going to stay being a bail bondsman, I'm not going to stay in the closet. Drudgery, manhood is about being sentenced to drudgery forever
Starting point is 01:09:45 and worshipping an unattainable ideal of womanhood. Yeah, right? And she kisses him and she leaves lipstick on him. And I think back to him hanging out in the women's section of the store. And I go, this movie is transgender, but also, I think, that four years before Jackie Brown came out, Hi, I'm about to spoil Chunking Express. One Carway made a film called Chunking Express, which is a better film than this, and I know Quentin Tarantino sees everything, because Quentin Tarantino loves telling people that he didn't go to film school, he went to films, right? And it's the same ending.
Starting point is 01:10:28 It's the same fucking ending as Chunking Express. It's about like, you just leave, and it sucks, and then it's, you know, it's sad, you know? And it's really effective this time too, but it is Chunking Express. We should watch Shunking Express. Sorry for spoiling Chonking Express. We should watch Shunking Express. When we do One CarWye season.
Starting point is 01:10:49 Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah, fuck. I mean, in the mood for love is one of the greatest moves ever. One CarWy is going to be a cornerstone of romance season. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:59 Oh, yeah. We're going forward to romance season. Do not mistake me on this one. But yeah, anyway, manhood is about being sentenced to work forever. which... Yeah. It's about sensing yourself to do it. Yeah, women, on the other hand,
Starting point is 01:11:15 get to get to kind of liberate themselves, you know? And there's a kind of like yearning lustful thing there that I don't know. It's really like, there's a ton of old-fashioned movies like that. And it's, yeah, I don't know. Basically like Quentin Tarantino toxic repper theory. Ooh, interesting. Yeah. Yeah, because like he declines to go with her and she drives away and he gets a call and he like, he's watching her go and he like goes, can I just call you back in a couple of minutes?
Starting point is 01:11:46 And we think, oh, he's going to run out there and like stop her. Doesn't, doesn't have a time. She's already driven away. And we just stay with him for a second or two. And then we stay with her in the car if she's singing along to the radio, clearly just devastated by that. Yeah. That's your movie. Fantastic.
Starting point is 01:12:01 That's the movie. Good movie. It's really good. I really like. It's a fun time. It's like, it's quite long. but it does like go by at a good pace. I think this is one of my favorite
Starting point is 01:12:10 Samuel L Jackson performances. He's so fucking sinister in this. Really, yeah. I bet. He's so sinister in this. I love the flex of casting Robert De Niro as like doing basically nothing. You could have got like anyone to play this role.
Starting point is 01:12:24 But yeah, it's really good. Incredible. Some slub. I like Melanie too. I like even though we get like a little bit of, you know, women are annoying and women are bitches. Like I like that she gets to do something. She's not just eye candy.
Starting point is 01:12:34 She's there to be a little bit of a lady Macbeth as well. Yeah, a lot of my complaints are about her, but not like, she's, she's treated very badly. She doesn't do anything. She's just there to be kind of it. Like, she's the only of a female character other than Jackie Brown. And he's going to get away with a lot here because he's got such a strong female protagonist. Yeah. But like, if she wasn't there, it would be just Melanie and this would be a terrible movie.
Starting point is 01:12:58 Yeah. And in some ways, this kind of preempts a lot of the kind of strong female lead stuff that we see sometimes, or particularly, This was a real thing in like the kind of 2000s through 2010s was kind of some baby's first feminism stuff of like, well, nothing else I do matters so long as I have like strong female character. She has a red leather jacket? Yeah. Singular. But so we don't have to be subjective about this because we have a science-based system. It stands.
Starting point is 01:13:30 Fuck, it doesn't stand for anything yet because I need to say the name before. How many times have I done this? Hundreds of times. It's called the scum. system, it stands for smarm, cultural insensitivity, unnecessary violence, and misogyny on a scale of zero to seven. How smarmy is Jackie Brown? Well, it is a Quentin Tarantino movie. So it's a pretty low-based line. I don't think it's a smarmy as reservoir dogs, because I don't think we have quite as many people or even kind of...
Starting point is 01:13:56 You came Kiwi for a second there. No. We don't have quite as many people being like, have you seen movies? Have you heard of songs? I have. Yeah, there's a couple. There's a couple There's a couple. But the thing about the movies that they're referencing is that they're like the black exploitation movies. But it's referencing them like through prostitution through homage rather than just through having a character to be like, I'm very clever. I've seen movies.
Starting point is 01:14:16 Yeah, exactly. I agree. Yeah. I think it's, like I say, it's one of the best Tarantino films. I think the Smarm, it's got to be relatively low. I want to give it a couple of points for really hammering on the same thing as Red of our dogs of like, yo, crimes like the movies. Three, four?
Starting point is 01:14:33 Probably no. I would go three. Okay, sure, yeah cultural and sensitivity Oh, this is a difficult one that we're not really equipped to talk about because we're all white We should have thought of that
Starting point is 01:14:45 before doing this I thought about it, but I couldn't We do be white, white people be like, white people be like, but we are the white people that be like, I'm literally the white person who'd be like, I know what, but Yeah, yeah, I mean, I equally I don't want to sort of throw my hands up and say
Starting point is 01:15:01 well, we're incapable of thinking about this right, I think It's an unknown, unknown. I don't even know. I'm out of her. Yeah, it's certainly it's a love last as a black exploitation as a genre. Yeah. Right.
Starting point is 01:15:14 And I like that it likes it. I like that it gives Pam Greer a lot of dignity. Yeah. Right? We have both our main protagonist and our villain being black and both are aware of and comment on the fact that this kind of changes their experience of living in the United Snakes of America, Kaka. that Sumo Simon Alexander Jackson was like, the reason I don't take them the money is because I'm black and you're white, right?
Starting point is 01:15:40 Yeah, there's some stuff we haven't mentioned about, about Max's Skip Tracer Winston, for instance. That's quite good about this, I think. Yes. I did like that, yeah. I don't know. I mean. That's actually worth bringing up. Let's do the Winston thing because Winston is a guy who comes up as a character later on.
Starting point is 01:15:57 He would be this movie's Mighty Joe if he was a real character, right? He is a large black man. And in the first scene with Ordel and Max Jerry, Ordel's like, who's that in that picture with you? And he goes, oh, that's my guy. And he goes, oh, that's interesting. So he works for you. I bet it was your idea to take that photo, wasn't it, Bama?
Starting point is 01:16:18 Just sort of calling out his like, he is using the size of this man. He's using black masculinity to increase his own stature and increase his own, like, scariness here. Yes. There's that for doing. Absolutely. Absolutely. So I think that's astute, certainly.
Starting point is 01:16:35 I mean, I think this is the seed of a lot of Quentin Tarantino's, let's say, issues with the N-word in particular, right? Like, I think this is the start of him as a white person giving himself permission to use it very liberally. And I think, you know, ultimately that's going to, the big switch for that is like pulp fiction, right? When he starts using that for, I think, his own entertainment as much as anti- thing. Yeah. But, you know, how much it's justified here, it was criticized at the time for it,
Starting point is 01:17:07 I think, justly. And so, yeah, I would say it's got to have like at least a two or a three for that. Beyond that, I don't know. Do we think it's about the same as reservoir dogs? Do we think it's better or worse? I think it's better than reservoir dogs. In that case, we gave reservoir dogs of four for cultural and sensitivity because it depicted a great deal of it, but it was saying something clever about it. Here I think we're depicting it, but we're not quite saying as much. Yeah. Oh, yeah, five then. Sorry, I forgot the worse is higher.
Starting point is 01:17:37 Yeah. It's been a long podcast. This one does let black people be people, which reservoir dogs didn't. Very, very true. Four then? We could say that, we could say that, yeah. Okay, four. So it's the same reservoir dogs, but for different reasons.
Starting point is 01:17:52 Okay. Unnecessary violence. If you're non-white listening to this, we're all sweating so hard right now. You can't imagine. Like, we're all constantly mopping our browser. on the webcams right now. Unnecessary violence. I think, well, yeah?
Starting point is 01:18:06 I mean... Does it? Well, okay. Because I don't know that it does. Two things that I want to talk about here. One is the slapping scene, right? Which is put in as a kind of laundry, I feel, for a guy who wanted to film that and then you didn't feel like he could.
Starting point is 01:18:25 Yes, true. The other one is killing Melanie, right? which is definitely unnecessary, right? But is unnecessary within a framework of misogynist violence that we've established from basically the first scene of the movie, right? Of like Ordel threatening to hit her or whatever for not getting the phone, stuff like that. Why didn't you just hit her? And I think that some of the sort of mining the killing for shock stuff kind of devalues the other stuff, you know? I think it requires it as a...
Starting point is 01:18:59 premise or requires you to accept it as a premise and then you go oh yeah you know why didn't he just hit her yeah why do you just hit her why do you have to yeah and that's a sort of finally balanced question of intent there but i i want to give it a couple for that you know yeah i agree there was definitely something about man that he's killing that didn't sit right with me all right three four i would do i would do three for sure um and finally finally misogyny well interesting A bit of overlap there. We have a lady who's the lead, which is great. She's clever, she's capable.
Starting point is 01:19:34 I like that a lot. Pam Greer as Jackie Brown is fantastic. She's outthinking everyone in a movie. She's outmanoeuvring them. But again, like remove her. What have we got? We've got Melanie and Sharonda are our two female representatives. Charondah, who is really a kind of nothing character who exists to establish
Starting point is 01:19:50 Ordell's cruelty. Yes. She does get a little bit of a scene in the mall and Jackie's nice to her. Melanie, despite what happens to her, in the end, we do see, we get her introduced initially as kind of like a sexual object of sexual desire for Robert De Niro, but then she's shown to have like quite a bit of agency as well. Her plan doesn't work, but she does try and make a plan, which I do like. I mean, compare this to some of the women in the Fast and Furious franchise who are just like
Starting point is 01:20:13 just there. You know, I think we're doing, I think we're doing okay. Yeah, I think that that agency proceeds from a place of slut, though, which I don't like. I think that we're trying to establish that Ordell, who is kind of coercive towards her, has an accurate read on not just her character, but the kind of inherent basis of her character that you can always trust Melanie to be Melanie, that she's kind of inherently duplicitous and unreliable and untrustworthy. I think that as well, with Pam Greer, right, there's, I don't know. I think Jackie Brown is a well-drawn character, right? and I think it's important to me that she wins,
Starting point is 01:20:56 albeit not in a sort of romantic sense, right? That the plan does work, right? She does outsmart everyone. Equally, there's, you know, plenty of examples of particularly white men putting black women on a real pedestal, right? And there's this kind of fetishistic aspects to it, you know? And I don't think that the movie does that necessarily,
Starting point is 01:21:20 but then you look at Quentin Tarantino's, of stuff and you think, well... We can't judge it by the later movies. It's so tough. We can't. Like, he had made the later stuff when he put this one out, right? Like, on its own. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:21:33 I like the way that they're like, essentially, Ordel's motivation is fake shit. It's not as strong as a motivation of being, you know, a single black middle-aged woman and feeling like you're running out of time. Like, that is a stronger motivation because he ultimately, he just wants to be like, cool for his friends. Like, this is kind of bullshit for him. And I like, I really do like that. I like Max Cherry.
Starting point is 01:21:56 I love him as a character. Mm-hmm. I don't know. I don't know. I think it's better than Reservoir Dogs. It's better than Reservoir Dogs. I agree. In which case, we get that a four for misogyny.
Starting point is 01:22:05 I'd be inclined to get, to give it a three, bearing in mind, achieving and Melanie and so on. Okay. Yeah. That gives a total score of, uh, 36, nine, uh, four. No, what? That's wrong. 13. Which is pretty good.
Starting point is 01:22:19 It's not bad. It's not bad. That's not bad. So he's improving. It's the same as the remake of taking Apollo 1, 2, 3, which feels intuitively correct. This is science. Yes, that works for me.
Starting point is 01:22:29 That's the best he'd ever get as well, I think. I'm looking at others. I didn't think that this was an easy thing to rate as well, and not just for the kind of cultural insensitivity reasons, but I don't know. I stand by my kind of verdict here, but I'm not sure I could identify the processes that led me to it, you know? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:22:48 It's an asthmotic reticulum, the scum system, as cyberneticist Stafford Beer would say. We're not entirely clear what the inputs or the decision-making matrix was, but we are very confident about the outputs. The purpose of Jackie Brown was to get 13 points on the SCUM system. Yes, exactly. Wow. Pepsi X with dragon fruit flavoring was released as a limited edition in the fall of 2012
