My name is Peter Parker, but I'm also Spider-Man.
This July, we're faced with a threat.
That can be anyone.
The world may have forgotten Peter Parker.
I'm just a neighbor, friendly neighbor.
But he hasn't forgotten them.
Sometimes Spider-Man has to do the hard thing.
That's my responsibility.
Talk to Banner?
I didn't know you could get that big.
Spider-Man, brand-new day in theaters, July 31st.
It's Kind of Funnies, Patreon Pledge Month.
support us at patreon.com slash kind of funny.
We really appreciate it.
What's up and welcome to the Kind of Funny Games cast for Tuesday, July 14th, 2026.
Of course, I'm your host, Tim Geddes.
I'm joined today by Andy Cortez.
Hello.
I'm joined today by Greg Miller.
Playing with an injury, Andy kicked me right before the show went live.
I cried out, and I would like to start talking about working with comp.
He yelped.
He actually yelled.
And like, what happened, Andy?
What's your side of the store?
I rubbed against his shin.
He went, oh!
Here we are.
Tammy, that's exactly.
I'm not denying, and I think when we were in court,
you'll see you play.
And we have a very special guest today as well,
but before I introduce him,
I want to explain why we have this man here.
He texted Greg Miller,
saying, I really love this little box.
And then Greg was like,
yeah, we got it.
And he was like, yeah, I stuck a SD card in it.
It's a double of storage.
You reviewed it already.
Yeah?
And Greg goes,
kind of funny,
dude.
I haven't touched one.
I'm happy with the laptop I carry around.
Performance were the boys' problems.
And then Gary goes,
let me know if you want...
These are actual texts that you're reading out?
Yeah.
Let me know if you want an actual PC gamer's opinion.
And then Greg said,
happy to have you come in next week for a deep dive.
So,
Andy,
we're kind of cucking your review here.
Just a little bit of the Steam mistake.
Gary,
you didn't know what the fuck you're talking about.
To be fair,
I didn't watch that review.
I'm just going to assume that it was bad.
Of course, of course, Gary.
We didn't expect that you actually wanted.
Why would I watch your content?
We didn't expect that you were talking shit.
Duh.
But now I want to hear what shit or praise you have to talk about the Steam Machine as one of
the longest running PC gamers I know.
I'm excited to be here.
That is true.
So it's like, you know, there's a perspective to be had here.
And of course, the audience loves Gary Weta.
We love on the screen right now.
It's very pretty gratifying to me.
Yeah.
I'm glad.
Listen, aside from the fact that.
this, you know, PC gaming is
historically my area. He's, you know,
I was editor-in-chief of PC Gamer magazine for
many years. I'm just happy
to be here. I miss you guys.
Yeah. I mean, you haven't
been here for a while. Been a minute.
Anything you want to talk about before we get into
all the steam machine stuff? No, I'm happy
just to, you know, I mean, there's any, it's
like it's been a while.
What I would say is, I think you guys
should just fucking bite the bullet
and give me my own show. So I can come on
for an hour every week and just, you
know, talk about what's on my
look, it's been killing me because there's been a lot of stuff
happening. A lot of stuff's happening.
Big news, right? Xbox layoffs, the vibes
are more often than they've ever been.
PlayStation, ditching digital games. I'm sure
that's been a big topic around here.
You're sure. You haven't watched. You haven't watched.
I don't know. I'm kind of like Hansel in Zealand.
I don't listen to Steve as me.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know if you were aware this, but I got a lot of
opinions about it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, okay,
so what have we just told you? Like, right here, Greg.
two-thirds of the vote for the company.
Deal?
Like, then it's on Gary, then it's on Gary.
Everybody to pull back to the curtain,
the amount of review codes I give Gary.
And then I'm like, you want to come be on the review?
And he's like, oh, no, man, I got no time.
I'm not going to play it.
Hey, can I get to, he wants a review code.
Yeah, do you want to come be on the review?
Now, I'm giving it to my wife.
All right, well, I don't know what we're doing, Gary.
I don't know the fuck we're doing over.
You're always welcome, Gary.
I was thinking about my own, my own, because I, I mean,
I wanted to get back more into content,
I've been enjoying some of the content I've been creating.
I had fun doing that Witcher thing.
I was thinking about bringing him back.
But like,
so what I wanted to do was like do like a weekly gaming news show,
but do it in character as like,
they're very contrarian,
like the kind of classic kind of right wing,
Asman Gold.
We need more.
That's definitely what we need.
But like a Colbert kind of thing.
You know,
mocking those people.
People will not understand it and they will take it legitimately.
That's the problem.
You can start making too much money from that, Gary.
That is going to get real.
That's how it goes.
Yeah.
That's, I mean, that's, that, as we go, all these, they've all realized, that's where the money is, right?
People are too stupid to know the difference.
And just tell them what they want to hear.
Feed them whatever slop they want to hear.
Boobes aren't jiggling enough.
You know, why, why isn't this a white person that I'm playing in this game?
That offends me.
Like, they just, it's so easy to say that shit.
And they give you money.
It's harder to be positive, though, Gary.
What's your game in the year so far?
Ooh.
Might be pragmata.
I like that.
that. But there's some biggies
that I haven't played. I still haven't played Bond, which is
next up. Wow. Yeah. I mean, I'm
behind. I'm still a hell diver's gone. I pass
3,000 hours in helldivers. The amount of
times I see this motherfucker long out of Steve.
Yeah. And it's perfectly healthy, the amount of
hell divers you've played, right? It hasn't caused any
issues. Well, so, okay, like I said, I
didn't even realize, you know, Steam tells you
you know, how much you've played. I recently passed
3,000 hours in hell divers. And I don't know why
this happened. Maybe it's just because I'm getting older or whatever,
but I think I know what it is, because with hell divers
is as a specific way that you play.
I've had my first ever, like, real video game injury.
I've never had one.
But, like, my, my, all the way from, like, here, like,
or it goes all the way up here and all the way I had an icy hot pack.
Oh, God, damn.
And it was, and it was from playing too much helldivers.
And it's in my left hand, because, you know, when you hold a game controller,
like, you know, this is looking around, right?
This is moving.
But you use the D-pad a lot in helldivis.
Say you call in the stratagems.
And, like, at this point, muscle memory free, do-do-do-do-500.
orbital strike, whatever, you know
where everything is. But like there's so much
I can feel like when you're actually aware
of it like it's some kind of
RSI or tennis elbow or whatever. I had to stop playing for a couple of days
and like, you know,
like I said, put fucking biofreeze on it.
I was taking ibuprofen for the inflammation.
I can still, as I'm talking to you now, I can feel it.
It sucks.
Meanwhile, his wife's juggling kids. His age is like,
where's the latest script?
Also, you know, I'm left-handed.
So, you know, that's out the window.
That was out of the window as well.
Audio listeners, he did a jerk off.
Oh, is that what that was?
I don't know if you've ever tried doing that with your offhand.
It doesn't work.
Everyone, if you watch it live, you can be upon the show.
I was not like you should practice it just in case, right,
in case you do get an injury.
By super chatting on YouTube.com slash kind of funny games.
So you can super chat any questions about anything we talk about on this show.
So if you have thoughts or opinions on anything said, please let us know.
preferably about the steam machine
but it could be about anything else.
Remember, we couldn't do this without our producers
on patreon.com slash kind of funny.
So thank you to Carl Jacobs,
Omega Buster, Delaney the Somm-Twining,
and Lacks.
Nomad for now, let's begin with,
the topic of the show.
Why were you so keen to talk about my injury?
Why was what?
Why were you so keen to talk about it?
When I told you, I had the, you know,
can you talk about that on the show?
Is that, like,
some of you particularly interested to talk about?
I think, I think a video game-related injury
on a video game podcast is pretty,
compelling content.
What about a video game podcast injury on a video?
I never even really,
will I ever be able to walk right again?
When I go home tonight,
will I be able to kick the soccer ball with Benny?
Or will they have to get me crutches?
You know what?
You know what I think is?
Tio Andy decided to go fucking Tjiri on my way.
I think when you play a wide variety of games
and you're doing different things with your hands and the controller,
that's fine.
But if you're like me,
like 90% of your time is spent playing one fucking game
and you're doing the same.
Then that's you're gonna get into like RSI whatever it might be but yeah like
literally as in towards you right now can feel if you ever had an link like a video game
Yeah I'm dude I have I can have I can have he has really good massages
You think he would yeah oh Kevin yeah yeah I mean not here but like the shoulder you're gonna go to heaven this shoulder needs to tell you right now
When I when I play blackjack in Vegas you know they come around they'll give you a table massage
Oh best money you'll ever spend the only video game to know that was a Tony Hawks pro skater back in the day like when I was
the most in, like Tony Hawk 3 through Thug.
Like, getting her playing a video game,
you're doing the same tricks and stuff over and other here.
Getting her playing a video game of a sport is like a whole different level.
You're doing this a lot.
You know what I mean?
It was more of like a finger situation where it's like,
I would have to stop.
Like, I would be like, I need to take a day off or else I'm going to fucking die out.
Sprang my wrist.
But this is real shit though.
On baseball.
You got to take care yourselves, man.
We're all getting older.
And it's like when you're doing that shit,
that's the thing is you realize that you are.
It's because you're getting older.
Yeah.
Finger stretches.
Yeah.
It's high up there.
Yeah, I just did a game of the year as well.
Yeah, I'm a real big fan.
Yeah, I loved it.
Yeah.
Awesome game.
Which one?
Craig Madder.
Oh, yeah.
Maybe you heard of it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Steam machine, Gary's review.
Let's just start with it.
Gary, what do you think so far of your steam machine?
What's your full experience?
Which one do you have?
So this is the 512.
You've got the 2 terabyte there.
That's right.
Right.
Essentially the same machine,
except,
you know,
the only difference is the,
um,
the storage.
And I was able to bump this,
bump this one up quite easily.
You know,
it's obviously the issue right now is RAM.
Everything's expensive.
Storage.
Everything's expensive because of the fucking AI bullshit.
Um,
but I was able to get a,
uh,
micro SD card,
super fast one,
uh,
for 130,
again,
you're still paying over the odds,
but 135 bucks for,
uh,
a 512 gigabyte card that bump,
that doubled this essentially,
bumped it up to a terabyte machine.
Um,
my two so what happened was Greg got his order he passed his on to me I bought it from him
but then my two terabyte order actually came through it's chipping now so when my two
terabyte arrives I'll take that and then this I'm going to pass this on to another friend of
mine who can't get one so you know you try to pay it forward but the you know I you should
pass it on but take that stick of ram and well no I'm leaving I'm leaving I'm leaving that in
but he's but I'm adding that onto the adding that onto the price I'll just I'll just
selling it on for what I pay Friday June 26 1080
18 a.m. Gary text me. Let me know if you get a line on a steam machine. I got fucked by the lottery despite 22 years of service. Seriously. What the fuck? This used to be a real industry where top shelf VIPs like we were treated with some sort of respect. You're not supposed to read. You're not supposed to read my private text. I was just I was just close to calling Gabe. But I thought that could easily go south. So I'm not going to do it. It's probably going to tell me to follow.
off.
So.
No, I'm PC gaming royalty.
Of course you are.
You better out forever.
22 years of service on Steam.
That's how they should have done it.
It should have been by seniority.
I should have been, I,
remember when Gabe fucking hand delivered,
like the first Steam deck?
That's the kind of white glove service I can get it.
So you're here with us.
Instead I got a fucking scrounge around like a normal,
trying to get one.
A normal.
Like a fucking cut.
Yeah, I got it pretty easy.
Bottom line.
very impressed. It has
surpassed my expectations. And a lot of
the hate that's out there for this machine
right now, obviously we'll get into it. These people don't
what the fuck this. Damn. I don't know what they're
talking about. So
expound. Get deeper
into that. What are the things that people don't know
what they're talking about? Well, okay, so the
biggest issue right now, I think, is
just price, right? But that's
everybody's problem right now. It's not like this
is overpriced for what it is. I've
watched a lot of video. I like, you know, I love,
I don't know if you watch much digital foundry, but I watch a lot of
I love those guys.
Because I like the tech side of games interest to me, but also so many, so many gaming
outlets now, you know, I like this one.
Hey, wacky, warm, burning zoo.
Yeah, we're going to hit you with some slime and all this going to bullshit.
Like digital founders.
Who's who is that?
Begging to have a show on our show.
Begating to have a show.
He just wants to get slined, bro.
Yeah, that's what I want to do.
I want to do my wacky morning zoo radio presenter.
Kevin, I was talking about how great you give massages.
Gary, Gary heard himself playing too much helldivers.
Can you give him really fucking killing me?
Again, you don't have to do this, Kevin knows he doesn't have.
Oh, my God, yeah, right there.
Fuck.
Oh, my God.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, that's the fucking Swedish.
He's getting in there, yeah.
Oh, my God, Kevin.
Where have he been?
Relax your neck.
No, I don't know.
That's a serious thing he fucking does.
I don't know if I fully recovered from the first time, Kevin.
Did that to be?
28, 2017.
I know.
You weren't kidding around.
No, no, no.
Magic hands.
Oh, fucking hell.
Where have you been all my life?
Jesus Christ.
Thank you, Kevin.
We'll talk to you later.
Obviously, prices everyone's problem right now.
When we were first, before the AI bullshit fucked all the prices up and there was a reasonable price conversation happening.
I guess like 799, something like that.
And it's confusing, right, because we are now with Helix is coming up and we are seeing this weird kind of convergence of these.
This is the first real example of it, right?
This is the first real gaming PC that actually feels and operates like a console with all of the console benefits that you would run.
No Windows bullshit, right?
It turns on with the controller.
You know, it's small.
It fits, you know, nicely.
A lot of the problems that you have with living room PC gaming.
And I brought a couple of things because that's been a bigger issue for me for years.
As a PC gamer, I've been looking for a decent living room PC gaming solution for a long time,
both in terms of what's the machine that you, like, have there,
and then how do you play the games?
You know, because mouse and keyboard is a thing and windows.
Like, it's not just as simple as picking up a controller.
And I've tried all kinds of solutions over the years.
Nothing's really worked.
And I don't always want to sit at my desk and play a game.
Sometimes you want to, like, kick back in the living room
and play on a big ass screen.
But it's been hard.
And over the years, I've had, like, a desktop rig sitting by this.
But it's unsightly, you know.
Yeah.
They're noisy, you know, a lot of fan noise.
We're consoles now. That's the problem.
You know what I mean?
Back in my day, I'm unsightly.
It's just like that I, it sucks that like, we used to be a people.
We used to have a PlayStation 2.
Then you get this fucking PlayStation 5 and I'm just like, I don't want this thing exposed.
And then if it's not exposed, then it's loud.
We had to, so, Leia was so offended by the, by the aesthetics of the PlayStation 5.
We had to buy an entire new cabinet where we could like conceal it.
Yeah.
You didn't want to have to look at it.
Xbox series X, no problem at all because it's just a fucking.
Gary would, would it surprise you if,
on an episode of Kind of Feudy,
the number one answer,
again, polling the kind of funny audience,
the number one answer for
the most attractive console
was the PlayStation 5.
I mean, that says a lot about your audience, doesn't it?
It was embarrassing.
Embarrassing.
Who got it right there?
That's just cringe.
Awful.
It's not a good look.
The slim one look is an improvement.
The pro looks better and so does a slim one.
I have three PlayStation 5s in my house.
You could look around my house,
and you'd not know where any of them are,
because they are all fucking in the world.
I don't want that shit out on the counter.
You're like coding open the drywall,
but it is, sealing it up.
And so, you know,
I'm a fan of, like,
non-ostentatious console design.
This obviously fits that.
If you, what's interesting,
if you took two of these,
like, if you took that and stacked it on here,
you would essentially have a series X.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Almost, almost exactly a series X, right?
Is those two sitting on top of one another?
Very simple.
It's just a cube.
I love that they call it.
it, the Gabe Cube.
I think that's very cute.
But let's say, okay, so price, right,
it is overpriced.
But literally, everything is overpriced.
The Xbox series, fuck it, what is it now?
750 bucks for a series X?
800.
If you had told me even a year ago that consoles would be significantly
more expensive now than they were at launch, like,
that's never happened.
Like, we are in the upside down.
Everything is so fucked right now.
Everything is fucked.
Everything is shit.
Everything sucks.
And I went on looking for, you know,
and I was going to swap out the SSD.
400 bucks for a 2 terabyte SSD that a year ago I could have got for $130.
What the fuck is going on?
I was contemplating adding an extra 16 gig stick to that one, the one that's on the right,
because I took it home and I was like, yeah, I'll go ahead and use it for a while.
$250 for a $16 gig stick around.
I was digging around, like, in my junk drawer and like figuring out, like, what can I cannibalize?
Because I have like a 2 terabyte SSD in a PlayStation 5 that like doesn't really get used because I'm that many games.
isn't it?
Like, maybe I can pull it out of there because, like, you should not be buying new stuff right now.
And so, I tell you why it really sucks.
I think this is a terrific machine.
I think this is potentially a zeitgeist game-changing type machine, as I think the
Helix hopefully will be as well, bringing PC games into the living room for the first time
in a way that feels real and feels like it can actually work.
We've had versions of this in the past.
It's never really worked.
This feels legit to me, but it's hamstrung by the fact that it just happened to come
long at a time when prices are jacked up.
And they're not going to get better anytime soon.
If anything, they're going to get worse.
So, you know, I would have loved...
That's what I think stops it from being a Zygdice machine,
which I want to let you go, but I think there's a conversation there.
I think this could have been a much bigger deal.
I would have loved this to come in at a, you know,
not even say a more reasonable price.
It's clearly the most reasonable price they could make it,
unless they were willing to sell it at a loss,
which they said they weren't willing to do.
I think they're probably selling these at costs.
I don't that they're making anything on selling these,
because they had to get it down as cheaply as they could.
Um, but it is still expensive.
What is it like one?
Like,
one, yours is,
$1,49 for the basic one.
And what is it like 13, 49 for 2 terabytes?
Which is a lot, right?
But again, so, you need that control.
A lot of other PC YouTubers
has done with Foundry have gone and specced out and built their own machines that are
very, like, obviously these are custom parts.
So you can't do it like for like, but like as close as you can get in terms of performance.
And it comes up roughly the same.
Yeah.
And it's not going to have a lot of the advantages that this has.
we'll get into that.
But no, I think it is going to,
I think if this was able to launch in a more reasonable,
I'm not even going to say it on more reasonable price,
because it's not just this,
in a more reasonable price environment
when things can just generally be cheaper.
More reasonable world.
This would have more of an,
I think it still has a good shot,
but I hate the fact that this is so hobbled
by the fact that the rent is too damn high right now, right?
It just sucks.
It sucks for everybody.
It sucks whether you're in the market for PlayStation,
Xbox,
anything.
Everything is so jacked up because of this.
And why?
So that fucking Google can tell me to drink bleach?
Because I,
because I've got,
Hey, Gemini, I've hurt my arm.
Oh, you should drink some bleach.
Thanks, AI.
That's well worth it.
I don't even know what's fucking real.
This is what's going to kill us.
AI, it's not SkyNet.
We don't have to worry about that.
It's not going to be SkyNet.
It's going to be the death of objective reality.
which we're already seeing right now.
It's like every single thing I see on social media now,
there was a person that posted a picture of like,
oh, I met Tieri-Henri this week.
Here's me with Tierra and I can't just look at that
and take it.
You have to wait, hold a minute.
Is that AI?
It might be because there's AI versions of that around, right?
People posting like bullshit pictures of them with celebrities.
You just cannot take anything for granted anymore.
Nothing can exist at face value anymore.
has to be dissected, and we're going to get to a point, because the technology is only
going to get better, right, where we just cannot agree on anything anymore.
And that's the fucking ballgame.
Once you can no longer agree on what is real and what is not, and the difference between
fact and fiction just becomes completely irrelevant, society will fucking collapse.
Like, that's so fucking bad.
In the meantime, PC prices are too high.
So everything is, it's just shit in every way.
And I don't understand the benefit of any of it.
I fucked around with that.
It's fun sometimes.
You want to look a quick answer on something.
The other day I wanted to figure out how,
you know, when you have ramen,
the classy ramen has like a soft-boiled egg and half in it.
I wanted to do one of those from my own,
I'm going to do my own soft-biled egg,
but like, how do you get that, like, perfectly,
like that yoke that's like right where you want it to be?
It has a name in Japanese.
I can't remember what it was.
But I asked Claude, it said,
oh, yeah, do it like this, do it like that?
Perfect.
I don't just Google it.
Is that worth?
what we're dealing with you.
No. Gary wanted this fucking egg.
A lot of people have been asking you.
I could have just spent an extra 30 seconds learning how to do the ramen egg.
I heard recently that the responses are getting shorter to save on the energy costs.
Because they're like, you know, losing argument for us.
We got to take away like, yeah, things aren't quite working out right now.
But anyway, so the reason why I don't like the machine, Gary.
Again, you brought up all the right points.
It's too expensive.
and my biggest issue with it though is that it's not this plug-in-play device it's not this
you're still going to require a lot of tinkering and that was the thing that me and roger ultimately
had an issue with and i love getting into settings i love going into changing the visual going
you know changing dLSs doing all this shit but for the steam machine i felt like i was still having
to do that and i think we still need more time for developers to say
This is our recommended Steam machine loadout.
Here's what we recommend settings-wise.
And then you'll be good to go.
Otherwise, you're going to be, you know,
should I be using FSR at 4K?
I could drop at a 1440P and go with a better FSR.
And just all of that sort of battling is like,
is it worth it?
Let's talk about that.
That's a big part of the conversation.
So wanting to come in here,
having like probably I had this for a minute right but I did some
benchmarking I installed a couple of games on it that you know are
the benchmarking go to games so black flag
re-synced has a benchmarking tool put that on there
doom the dark ages which you know is obviously a standard
bearing game for PC gaming technology and cyberpunk which is like
the one that everyone bench that's the the benchmark that you use
and I did a bunch of benchmarking on it and we'll get into that in a minute
but in terms of the plug and play it does it does
successfully do a lot of things that have not been successfully done before.
So first of all, just the form factor, right?
It's not offensive at all.
It's really quiet.
Like, even when it's like really put,
because I wanted running at the cyberpunk benchmark maxed out,
like it's whisper quiet.
I had prior to this,
I had a desktop PC sitting next to the living room TV cabinet thing.
And then a Lenovo Legion laptop that I just plugged into the TV.
it was a pretty powerful machine.
But like when under load,
it's like a fucking leaf block.
Oh, yeah.
Right?
And it's bad.
Again,
the console is like this one.
I remember when we played Last of Us part two.
Yeah.
The PlayStation 4.
By the end,
I mean,
it was like,
we literally had to turn up the volume
on the TV to,
like, mask the sound that it was making.
Because it was,
it was an older PS4,
but still,
Jesus.
Oh,
yeah.
Blessing sitting next to Greg gets a good draft of warm air
coming to him when Greg is gaming.
I use that razor blade 16.
I mean,
that's the thing.
I use the razor blade 60.
team that's amazing and I love it and it is so fucking loud.
Yeah.
Yeah.
This has not made a sound that I have heard.
It's very, very quiet.
It looks like it's about the same size and weight as a console.
You know, like I say, it's not that much bigger than a GameCube.
You know, obviously these third, this, you know, it's just on and off with a magnet, right?
These are cute.
Third party people will be making these.
I'm sure there'll be, you know, lots of funds that you can.
I'm saying you should just, I want to get like a blank one and just let my four-year-old just like draw on it and just have fun
and stuff like that.
So they've done a lot of things here
that are just cute and nice and console-like.
Yeah, like an etcher sketch one.
My favorite thing is only is just being out
just being out to press the button
on the steam controller,
just wake it up.
And he has HDMI,
so it wakes up my TV as well.
He does all the console things
you would expect it to do.
And that honestly is, to me,
the biggest, like, wonder.
It's like, how has no other PC thing worked
and everyone's going to be like,
no, do you just do this, do this,
like, all right, we've tried out all that stuff.
And it works for a week,
and then it stops working.
So every, every PC that I've ever had
plugged into my,
the living part of this is like just turning it on
and getting sitting down to game as a hassle, right?
So because it's Windows and because that PC,
even though it's a gaming machine,
I'm probably going to be logged into my Gmail.
I don't want that getting stolen, right?
So it has to have a pin code on it.
So every time I fucking,
I've got to open it up,
do the, get a keyboard out,
or go over to the laptop and like,
it takes a minute to get,
and then launch Steam,
put it into big picture.
It takes a while to get to the point where
on a console you'd be there in five seconds, right?
Now you can actually be there in five seconds.
You just press that button.
Everything turns on straight into SteamOS, no bullshit.
It is, in that regard, it is exactly like a console.
It gives you that console frictionless entry into the system, which I love.
Really, really like that.
What we love.
In terms of the settings, here's why I think this is the interesting box to have
and why people say, well, you could just build a comparably, you could.
But again, like not everyone knows how to or wants to build their own PC.
part of the appeal of this is the plug and play nature of it, right?
Straight out of the box, plug it in, you're good to go.
One of the things I noticed, and a lot of games do this now,
when I was running through the cyberpunk settings,
one of the settings just says Steam Deck.
Like, it's just the settings for the Steam Deck,
because the Steam Deck is such a big thing, right?
If this can achieve that same level of like,
this is the default PC,
games are going to start shipping with Steam Machine preset settings,
but Al already has a verified program for it.
So it's really nice.
to have like a target system that developers can work towards, you know, I would say that mid-range
specs. Again, very impressive performance. I can talk about like what it's been like playing on it
and give you some numbers as well. Roger and I, while we were playing it, thought it's so cool
to go into the settings on Steam and go to select a community control scheme. You go to community
control schemes and see like, oh, oh, people are using Dodge there. I guess that's pretty smart,
whatever, and you can go through a bunch of different
control schemes and people upload. It would be
awesome if there were community
setting profiles.
For the hardcore fans
to go, this thing works perfectly
for my Steam Deck. You go to that community
Steam Deck profile or Steam Machine
profile, bam, all the
settings for that one game.
It's high draw distance, but it's low
textures because it is a real... I wish they had that level.
I think you're going to get something that is as good as that,
which is whatever the developers have said, these are the
you're going to get a steam machine preset in games
that is going to give you the best settings
because you do have to, you know,
in the world of consoles, right, it used to be
there was nothing, right, you just played the game.
And now it's got a bit more complicated with like,
but it's not that complicated.
Okay, do you want frame rate or do you want quality, right?
Do you want, you know, graphic,
and even that is like, oh, I don't know,
go back and forth, can you tell the difference?
What do you like?
I generally prefer to favor frame rate over fidelity,
but, you know, there's...
Frames win games.
Just like, just two, yeah,
even just having two options
for complicated for console people, right?
because we're stupid.
Never had to choose anything.
Now you have to choose something.
You go, oh, I'm not one of those people who gets like paralyzed by choice.
Like, what if I'm making the wrong choice?
What do you mean we're stupid? You mean they're stupid.
You play on PC now, dude.
When you get into PC.
Let me tell you.
Well, eventually we'll get to it.
Let me tell you.
I literally had to do what you were talking about.
So like when I wanted a benchmark,
I wanted to run cyberpunk on my 4090 on my beast rig,
just to kind of see like how much more impressive.
How much more I could push it than this,
which obviously is a vast difference between those two machines.
machines. That's like a four or five thousand dollar machine, right, as compared to like one-fifth
of the price for this. And I did, I had to Google like best, you know, setting Cyberpunk
27, 4090. And it gave me, it gave me, but it's like 15, 20 different things, rate tracing medium,
ambient occlusion on, you know, ray, you know, ray trace clouds, you know, medium, whatever.
And all these granular settings, and they'll eventually get there. I think one of the nice
things, again, about having a box that comes from a company as big as Valve that is kind
of the next step of the steam deck, which already has established this, that is,
you are going to see, or just ship with a steam machine
preset, and that'll be, you might want to tweak it a little bit,
but that'll be pretty much the one that you want.
I have a quick question here with all that stuff,
because it is the bane of my existence of going in,
wanting the best, looking at all these options,
and I'm like, I'm in the know on this stuff,
and I don't understand what half these things are.
I feel like game to game, they have different names for the same thing or whatever.
For Andy and Gary, if y'all were to open up a modern PC game,
like every game that came out this year,
First Light and Assassin's Creed and Resident Evil and Pragmatta, all that stuff.
And you're to look at the menu.
Do you know what all that shit means?
Yeah.
Or what percentage of it do you think you know?
Um, close to 100?
Like, I think the only problem I have is what you're mentioning where some people call
thing another, you know, we should do a games cast that's literally you just breaking every
single thing.
A lot of the-
explaining how that could, how it often affects performance.
A lot of the stuff that's always been there, like, you know, since I was editing a piece of
in the 90s, you know, like text to detail, you know, and things like that, are fairly obvious,
right?
Yeah.
But we live in an age now where there's so much new stuff, like, you know, all the dynamic
resolution, upscaling, FSR, TAA, you know, DLSS.
What the fucking, I could not tell them to mean rate tracing and path tracing.
Literally, like, somebody asked me this this morning, because I was showing them the
steam machine.
They said, what is path trans?
It's like fancier ray tracing, I guess.
I can't give you a real answer.
I don't fucking know.
And there's all these things.
I think the next simple step in the kind of the consoleification,
the simplification of PC gaming that I think this can be a good gateway into
is maybe you'll see like Steam Deck performance.
Oh, sorry, Steam Machine, you know, brackets performance, steam machine brackets,
you know, the console version of like you can still, there's a bit of granularity.
But if they really do want to get, it's nice to have the option though, right?
If you want to, to really get in there and like, what happens if I just turn Raytracing up,
like one more notch and like let's see what that looks like.
you can fuck around with the setting
console games will never let you do that. So you can do it
with this, but you will have the option
again. The problem
right now that I'm having is
that it's supposed to, PC games are supposed to
auto-detect your set. It's supposed to scan your system. Look at what you've got
and go, okay, I think these are the best settings for you.
Out of the box, the preset for this,
what it's auto-detecting, is low-balls you immensely.
So, for example,
at the system level, this is capped at 1080P.
but you can go into any game.
So like, for example, when I fire up Cyberpunk
and I go into the graphic settings, the maximum resolution
available is going to be 1080P.
But we know Cyberpunk can go up to 4K.
But if you go into the, you're going to Steam and like,
just click one base, just like, you know,
give me the highest resolution possible.
Then when you go into, it unlocks all those other resolutions.
So, for example, I've got, I took some screenshots.
I've got numbers if you want to hear, but I remember the basics.
So, cyberpunk and doom the Dark Ages with the two that I
kind of messed around with the most, because again, those are like two games that people look to
for benchmarking.
And also, Doom the Dark Age is one of those games that ships with ray tracing on by default.
Right.
You know, something with Cyrupunk, you can turn all that off.
Most modern games, you can just turn a lot of that off.
Doom the Dark Age has ray tracing on regardless of your...
And one thing that I've learned is that ray tracing, whether you turn that on or off is
the biggest single factor in terms of like a performance here.
Oh, yeah.
Like as soon as you turn ray tracing on, it just fucking kills it.
Not on, again, not on a beast rig.
Like, I was running, I ran the
cyberpunk benchmark on my 4090
with literally everything maxed out,
path tracing everything, and I was doing 100 plus frames.
It looked fucking glorious.
On this, you'd be down to like 15, 20 frames
that everything turned on.
It wouldn't be playable.
But so, a good example,
doing the dark cages, right?
At the system level capped at 1080p,
ran the benchmark, very high settings.
Everything on except, everything maxed out,
except rate tracing was not turned on, 60 frames locked.
I think like 59.58 was like the lowest it went.
So it was essentially 60 frames all the time.
And it looked fucking beautiful.
Yeah. Well, let's see what happens.
Like actually, so clearly there might be some overhead here, right?
If it's locked it because it's not, it's set at 50.
You can't go above 60 because it's cap there.
Because I have the frame rate cap on.
Let's see, let's see how far we can push it.
Let's see much overhead we have.
Went into the system settings for doing the dark age.
Again, it's one, one little toggle, turned off, you know, put on maximum resolution.
go back to the doom.
Now I have access to all the resolutions in the doom,
the dark age's menu,
turned it up to 1440P,
same settings,
ran the benchmark again,
60 locked.
So like,
it can,
it's handling 4040,
there was a big conversation about 1440P versus 1080.
I'm a big believer that 1080p is good enough.
No.
For most people.
You don't think so?
No.
What's interesting is especially,
and this is especially,
not on a 4K TV,
which is what people are playing on.
And a lot of TVs don't support 1440P.
Some do, though.
And in that,
case, you're sitting pretty.
So I ran
cyberpunk at 4K
on my big ass
screen in the living room.
Again, everything
either high or very high,
no ray tracing,
45 to 50 frames.
And which is still pretty fucking good
for 4K.
Now the difference is, here's the thing.
There's interesting thing about PC gaming
in the living room and console gaming in general.
I think you can tell the difference
stream resolutions less easily when you're that far back from the screen.
When you're standing, if I've got a 4K monitor and I'm staring it like that at my computer
desk and I'm playing a video again like that, I'm going to see the difference.
When you're sitting 10 feet away, I don't think you do see the difference, anything like as
much.
And I literally just did this this morning.
I ran the, I ran the cyberpunk benchmark at 1080p at 1440p and 4K.
And the difference in frame rate performance is clear.
The difference in resolution fidelity is not.
So I can, I feel like you can, you can sacrifice a little bit.
it in resolution, which you probably won't even, you'll barely even notice it, but get a very
noticeable increase in performance. So I generally would, I play a lot of hell. So I did this last night.
I did a lot of hell to play a lot of hell divers, did the same thing. There's no benchmarking
tool, but I played it in 1080p, flawless, right? I, I, the frame rate counter up,
but it was, it was, it was, it was, it was less important than the number is the experience,
right? Are you having a good time playing it? Does it feel smooth? Does it feel fluid? Yes,
absolutely. Well, let's try.
I put it up to 1440p.
Still super high settings.
No difference in performance.
But it's slightly, yeah, you can see it's a little bit sharper.
So now I play it at 1440p.
So the whole conversation about,
it's a great 1440p machine.
This game can't really, this can't really do 1440p.
You have to lock it.
No, it absolutely can because I've been doing it all week.
And it looks, it depends on the game.
Something like Hal Divers is not going to hit the system as hard as Doom or
cyberpunk where, you know,
it's really pushing the system.
But again, we can talk about numbers all day long.
I would say in general,
but for this size and form factor,
again,
the price is a mess because the whole world is a mess.
But, like,
it's way more performant
than I thought it was going to be.
Like, it's...
Unless you are one of these fucking crazy-ass pixel counters
that can tell the difference between,
like, low and high, you know, ambient occlusion,
I look at these digital foundry videos
and they're putting up, like, the side by side.
I'm like, that's the same fucking image.
Like, I get that.
Okay, so that's TAA upscaling, and that's DLSS.
Those are corporate's asking you to tell them to.
It's the same fucking picture.
Like, if you can tell the difference, you must have like 2010 vision or something.
I cannot tell the difference.
I mean, I think the point between those two is that you're getting better performance with DLSS when.
Yes.
Because of the upscaling.
I think, based on my experience, it's an awesome 1440P device that you set to 1440P
and then you use FSR.
And I hope as AMD continues to develop FSR,
that that upscaling tech gets better
because running a 1440P on a TV
really, really far away,
I think is like definitely good enough for me.
And then FSR, you're dropping into a lower resolution
and then using the AI to kind of build it back up
and, you know, look sharp.

The Hulu original series Furious is coming to Disney Plus.
Starring Emmy Rossum, Furious follows FBI agent Alice Black on the hunt for a mysterious and calculating serial killer.
Both walk their own paths toward justice, and as their lives start to intertwine, the line between right and wrong begins to blur.
Don't miss the three-episode premiere of the Hulu original series Furious on July 27th, only on Hulu on Disney Plus.
Okay, Gary.
It's funny because I was looking at, I hadn't been looking at,
I took a moment until I kind of looked at the chat during the break.
The exact thing that I was about to complain about,
some of your chuds are doing it as well.
They're not chuds.
Well, this guy is a chud.
Maybe, okay.
So I'll be,
we'll be the judge of that.
I made the mistake of posting on threads that I liked the steam machine,
and I thought it was pretty good.
Of course, all the fucking rats come scaring out of the darkness to attack me.
And I said, I said, I hadn't done very much.
with it yet, but I just got a code for
Black Plag rescinds. That was the first thing
I installed on it, has a benchmarking tool,
ran it at 1080p, and again at 1440P,
because it's very easy to change the settings, rerun the benchmark.
1080, because you only even really have to run,
in my experience, like, a 60 second benchmark.
The number you see in the first 10 seconds
is pretty much going to hold, right?
So you can just very quickly just see what's going on.
But I did run it a few times all the way through.
Classic kind of just like, you know,
runs you through like Havana or one of the busiest cities in the game.
and it gives you the numbers at the end.
At 1080p and 1440p,
never dropped below 60.
And it looked fucking, at very high settings.
And medium rate, even with medium,
it's like five degrees of rate tracing.
I just like the middle setting.
60, no problem.
And there's a guy in my replies going,
you're lying.
That's not true.
That didn't happen.
I'm like, what the fuck are you talking about?
Post a screenshot.
Well, I would if I gave a fuck what you thought.
I'm not going to fucking go out on my way to,
who the fucking are you?
There's somebody going, Gary's not wrong.
Gary's wrong.
You can tell the difference between 1080P and 40P.
So what am I supposed to do with that?
Am I supposed to say, you know what?
You're right.
I can see it.
I trust you, Mr.
fucking 420, uh,
IRA or whatever your fucking name is.
I'm going to trust you over what I'm seeing with my own fucking eyeballs.
I can't tell the difference.
We're talking about the difference between 1080 and 4K.
Maybe you've got sharp a vision.
What's that?
We're talking about the difference between 1080 and 4K.
So at 4K, you are,
You can see the difference.
You are seeing a difference, but again, not enough to compensate for the frame rate hit.
I entirely agree.
That's why 1440P is like where you want to be.
As I've discovered again, and this is a TV machine, not a modern machine.
One thing, one thing that I will tell you, if you get a piece of practical advice, if you get one of these, don't accept the low ball specs that defaults to.
Mess around with the benchmark.
See how far you can push it before you start to see that frame rate here.
And then find your, find your sweet spot.
But what I've discovered in the main is that this will run, most.
Most games, and again, I'm talking, I'm talking heavyweight games, Doom the Dark Ages,
Black Flag, Resynced, Cyberpunk, and again, Helldivers, which is a lower, a lower demanding game.
It still looks a fucking good looking game.
At 1440p, 60 frames a second, pretty much locked.
Again, it might drop like a frame at very high or ultra settings, which is like, what more do
you fucking want for a little box like this that plays all your Steam games in your living room?
What blew me away in the Digital Foundry breakdowns was this machine has two slots for memory.
It has one slot occupied with a 16 gig stick of RAM.
And then Digital Foundry did the thing where they took out that 16 gig of RAM and filled both slots with two, eight gigs, giving you the same 16 gigs, but seeing the performance different.
Oh, the Joe Channel stuff?
And how much better it's still like, well, I didn't even know that was a thing, right?
and so it just sucks that it couldn't have been made even in that way to get you that.
I mean, so that's the thing right.
It's not just,
it's,
and what,
what sucks the most is that it's not an easy tear down.
Yeah.
And that's such a bummer that like,
I wish it was force crews lift the thing.
There you go.
And like I,
I can replace,
I'm not,
I'm not a type of person who likes doing a whole lot PC building wise.
I'm too scared.
I feel like I'm going to fuck things up,
not knock over a drip glass of water,
whatever.
But I can replace RAM.
I can replace solid state drives.
I've done like the basic shit.
After, I was like so close to buying that extra stick of RAM for the machine.
And I looked at the tear down.
I was like, oh, that's a lot more.
But on its bit, a lot more intricate than I thought.
You can do what I did, which is rather than opening up and put an S and replace the SSD,
buy a buy a, again, it's everything's jacked up right now price wise, but get a 512,
like this is a 512.
I'm just like a RAM.
Oh, you're talking about actual RAM.
I'm just like for storage.
I was able to double this thing up very cheaply.
And literally it's just sticking a.
memory card in the, in the, in the, an SD card in the front slot and you haven't opened up
anything at all.
The, the, I read about the dual channel RAM thing as well.
You get better performance if it's two, two sticks of eight instead of one to pick
a 16, but where, and Valve would have made it that way if they could have got the
parts, right?
Again, everything, it's not just, everything expensive at retail.
It's expensive for Valve.
And you can't even get the parts because fucking Sam Altman is, is sucking and hoovering them
all up.
And it's impossible to get anything done.
Um, so they, they couldn't even spec this exactly the way that they wanted to.
And again, the price is too much.
but again, I don't think you can hold it against,
because it's like every,
their backs are against the wall.
That shitty tide has lowered all boats, right?
Everything is bad, right?
Their backs are against the wall and they're like,
we just have to put these out there.
We can't just sit on these waiting for a big change that happened.
The timing is just really, really unfortunate,
but like,
take that out of it for a moment.
Is this more than capable for a living room PC?
Is it comparable?
Because I've done this as well.
Like,
I was thinking about it because I'm finally going to,
now I'm finally going to play cyberpunk,
because I, like,
put it on.
You never played it?
I never got around to him.
Well, no, because, you know, it was busted for the
longest time, right?
I'm going to play it when they finally fix it.
And they did finally get to a point now it's in great shape.
But by then, I'd like move on to other things.
But now I'm going to play it.
Because I put it to fucking great.
So again, I did it.
Again, just an eyeball benchmark.
Played a bit of that,
played this on on PC.
And brand the Xbox version as well.
This looks better.
It does.
Then the Xbox version?
Yes.
Oh, it's, it's, the only so.
Yeah, believe it should.
A lot of, so Digital Foundry did a,
You have a PS5 pro, don't you?
It was a digital,
Digital Foundry did a comparison between this and a PS5.
I don't know if they did the pro yet,
but it came out pretty much identical, right?
So the pro should definitely be.
I mean, again, there's a broader conversation
that I'll get into on my own show when, you know,
when that launches hopefully very soon.
Or you should just,
you got to play that on your big PC with Pathraising.
This just sounds silly that you.
You waited for this for cyberpunk?
No, of course, of course.
And that's part of the reason why.
It's so good.
I mean, you can,
cyberpunk has cross-progression anyway,
so I could play Xbox in the living room and PC downstairs.
But, you know,
when I ran that benchmark,
like, again, fully maxed out with, like,
path tracing everything.
And it was getting like a high thing.
It was like 109 frames.
And it looked,
and again,
this is on a super ultra-wide,
5120 by 1440.
It looked fucking amazing.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's,
that's the way to play.
Either that or like 4K on a massive, like,
projector.
Like if I got my,
if I would have dragged my PC upstairs,
then my 490 and plug it into the 4K 100 inch projector,
I should do that actually.
Oh,
that would look sick.
So,
all these,
all these things are very interesting.
There's,
there's so much more to talk about.
I will say that,
again,
the biggest thing for me is they have succeeded in making,
playing PC games as relatively,
almost as simple as playing PC games.
So the first time that I've ever seen,
this is like,
They finally fucking figured it out.
And it's not perfect.
Like, for example, and I brought a couple of little show and tell things.
I'm all over the place, but I'll say one thing.
The fact that this doesn't run Windows is probably the best thing about it.
Oh, yeah.
I was playing Hell Divers last night.
I'm in the middle of a fucking major firefight against the Illuminate.
And suddenly, Windows dumps me out because some fucking five-year-old app that I haven't used in forever wants to update.
Do you want to update this app?
No, how do I get back to my fucking game?
By the time I get back, I'm dead.
Fuck you Windows.
What the fuck is that?
Windows was never,
Windows is for fucking critchings, man.
It's not,
it was never meant to run games.
The fact that they're running,
for Helix,
they're saying,
oh yeah,
but it's a scaled down version of Windows.
Why don't you,
of course they can't,
right,
because it's their core business windows.
They can,
they're always going to be fucking saddled with it.
But like,
I remember Dave 2D,
who's another tech YouTuber
who I like,
who I like,
they was able to do a like-for-like comparison,
right?
Because they had,
was it the Rog ally or one of the,
one of the,
one of the,
the,
you know,
tested a bunch of games on that,
and then they brought out a version of it
and another version that only ran Steam OS.
Ran the same games,
like 20%, 30% more performance
on the Steam OS version.
So don't tell me that Windows isn't hobbling games
because it absolutely is.
And not just in terms of performance,
but again, things like,
oh shit,
the fact that keyboard,
gaming keyboards have to ship
with a button that disables the Windows key
because you might accidentally hit it
and dump yourself out of the game,
tells you that these were not meant to be gaming machines.
They've been turned into them,
but they were never meant,
to be gaming. They were never designed from the ground up the way the Xbox or the Super
Nintendo or the Dreamcast or the PlayStation 5 were designed to play games with an operating
system that is only meant to play games and do nothing else. And that's what Steam OS. That's finally
what SteamOS is. It's so much for simpler. I don't have to worry about Windows bullshit. Part of
the problem though, like for example, cyberpunk, when you launch cyberpunk for the first time,
it doesn't launch you into the game. It launches you into the CG product red, like website
thing where you have to sign up because if you want cross-progression, you have to link your account
and stuff like that. And now I'm like, oh, fuck, I need a account.
keyboard, right? Because you can kind of do it with the steam controller, but not really. This is one of
the issues. This is why I brought some of these things. These are things that I've used over the years,
and I still use this now, even with the steam machine, is I'm never going to be a living room gamer
who's playing with a mouse and a keyboard, like with a lap desk. Because like, I don't really play
mouse and keyboard on PC games anymore unless it's the kind of game that absolutely demands it.
Like, even shooters, I'll just play with a controller. That's what I'm used to. Your smirka.
It's fine. And I used to be a snob about that. When I was on PC gamer, I'm like, oh, mouse and keyboard,
that's the way to go.
And it obviously is more precise.
I just like playing on the controller.
It's my preference.
So,
but you have to have a keyboard around
just in case you need it and a mouse
because it will sometimes,
it's still a PC, right?
CyberPont, when you launch the PC,
again, I think they'll start doing builds
for Steam OS that don't have this issue.
But as long as we're playing Legacy Windows games,
when I run the benchmark on this
and it says, it still says Windows 10,
it still thinks it's running on Windows, right?
I think that will change
as the Steam machine,
and SteamOS becomes more established,
because Valve is making SteamOS available.
You can build your own Steam machine
running Steam OS.
And I think we've got more support on that would be good.
But I had to fucking,
in order to kind of navigate the web browser
that I needed to navigate in order to play the game,
which you'd have to do on the console version
because, again, that's not an issue.
I had to bust this out and, you know,
use my little track pad and stuff to get past that.
And then once that's done, I can put it away
and I never need to use it again.
The virtual keyboard on the Steam controller is pretty good.
The little trackpad things are pretty good.
But every now and again, you are still going to need something.
This is like the Logitech G400.
Everyone's got one of these, right?
These fucking cheap plastic little keyboards has a shitty little trackpad.
Again, you're not going to play games on this.
But when you find you're going to navigate a menu or something,
you have to grab this and like this is the easiest way to do it
because you have a separate mouse.
It's just all in one thing.
And then I even have this little thing that I got for like $20 on like fucking Timu.
This works really well.
Like this is a little dongle or it's Bluetooth, tippy, tapy keyboard.
This is a pretty good track pad, scroll wheel.
you know, like when it forces you to do something like keyboard and mouse based,
I will grab like and then throw it away again until I need it.
So Gary, you and I have been on this adventure together for many years,
trying to figure out the PC to more home theater-based setup of having it work in both
locations simultaneously, separately and like cracking that code.
And it's been impossible.
Like that is something that I was very excited for the steam machine.
You clearly are very thrilled about it with all of that.
But these little controllers, seeing every single thing that you have on this desk,
we've tinkered with all the same things.
There's all the same answers out there.
I have found an answer that has solved all my problems.
It is a free app, at least I think it's free,
and if not it's like $2 called Remote Mouse.
And it is just, it's an app on your phone,
it logs into your computer and you just,
your keyboard is your keyboard.
Okay.
And the top of the screen is a mouse.
And it solves all those dumb little hiccups of when a pop-up comes up.
I'm going to look into that as well.
It's so great.
I love all these laws.
Again, I'm hoping that as Steam OS becomes more established,
people will start, I think they'll
keep being in mind, yeah.
But they'll be able to ship a build of cyberpunk
that is for Steam OS that doesn't jump you into that web interface, right?
So it's more like the console build
where even if there is that thing when you sign up,
you can just do it with the controller.
It still thinks it's a PC.
This is still new enough,
and Steam OS is still new enough
that developers aren't really like optimizing for it yet
in terms of bypassing the mouse and keyboard entirely.
We'll get there.
Still early days.
I love that they are making Steam OS available
for people to build their own rigs with it.
It's awesome.
Makes sense, right?
because they want it to proliferate.
We've got to get away from...
I really, really hope that this is the beginning of the end
of the death of Windows gaming.
Not PC gaming, Windows gaming.
Because Windows is not good.
It's just not good for gaming.
They've tried over the years.
I've seen them do it, all these different initiatives.
The fact that they have to kind of apologize
for the fact that Project Helix is going to be running...
Oh, but it's not really Windows.
Like, doesn't that tell you that, like, Windows isn't good?
You're having to, like, explain away why there's not going to be that much Windows in it,
but still some because you're Microsoft and you can't not do it.
This is the way.
This is much more the way forward.
Also, I love the fact that if I want to play,
let's say I want to play a game in the bedroom on my TV in there,
you can something take it into the bedroom.
Sure.
Which I could never do.
You can do that with a laptop as well.
It's still a bit more of a hassle.
But like my old, you know, even like a ATL, like a mid-tow,
you're not going to be dragging it around the house.
This you can just pick up and, you know,
it was easy for me to bring this in.
It's a console.
This is more a question for the chat.
Gene Jackets talking about it.
Has it been at the table put Steam OS on to anything yet?
because I keep thinking about it.
I love my...
I want to put it on a laptop.
I use my Rogg ally all the time.
I adore that machine,
but I have it where it just boots up
and then I go to Steam OS.
And then the Razor Blade,
which I love,
I have said that once I'm logged in,
it throws open Steam Big Picture Mode
and I'm right into it there.
So I'm like,
I don't understand putting SteamOS on there
and then what that would do
for my Xbox app
or stuff like that,
to that degree of it.
I keep thinking about doing it,
but I haven't done it yet.
Again, there's a certain amount of tinkering.
So, for example,
one of the things that I eventually
want to do with this is get all my main emulator stuff running on it.
But that there's, and you can do it.
But there's a different pathway into doing it.
You're using desktop mode and, you know,
what, what, what, what if I want to like plug on my, like,
Plex movies into it?
Can I, there's, there's going to be things that.
The other thing I like about it, though, is that, uh, I don't have to update
almost like, like, I did this the other day.
Like, if you haven't played my PC, PC for a week or so, I'm going to,
Windows is going to want to update stuff.
Nvidia is going to want to update stuff.
All the drivers all get updates.
separated separately. As far as I'm aware, like, when Steam OS updates, it just updates all the drivers
for everything. So you're not going, oh, I've got to go to Nvidia experience and fucking update
that shit separately. It just, it just is all done in one thing. There's one thing. There's the
controller thing. And then if you have the dock, there's like, there is separate things, but it's like
for the OS itself, it does seem. But it's not, but it's so, again, it's just so much more like a
console experience than PC gaming has ever been. And that for me remains. Yeah. The two
That's the SteamOS side of it, though.
That's not a Steam machine.
The two headlines for me are they have successfully for the first time ever in the history of PC gaming, shipped a PC and an operating system that makes it genuinely feel like a console.
Not perfect, but like 95% like a console.
Pick up the controller, press your Steam button, turns on, TV turns on, straight into selecting a game and away you go, right?
Hold the button down against it, put it to sleep, all the console things that you expect.
No fucking around with drivers or whatever it just does before you.
and that it's, and then the other one is just much more performant
than I thought it was going to be.
I expected it to, because I have a steam deck,
and that is pretty, like, that does chug on a lot of things.
And we expected more from this,
but there was so many bad vibes from like,
the tech YouTubers go,
oh, this is, you know, because this is weak.
And you have to remember, the people that you're listening to
are like the power users that want everything to be super powerful all the time.
I used to say this before about the Switch.
It's like, and the Xbox Series S,
like the best console for most people,
It's good enough.
And in fact, more than good enough for the vast majority of people,
if you are a power hog, then, yeah, this just isn't the machine for you.
It's the same people like pissing on them.
Well, I can't edit 8K video 16 at a time on the MacMuk Neo.
Yeah, that's why they have a fucking pro, dude.
This is not for that.
It's just like lightweight computing.
This is for good enough, stroke, more than good enough PC gaming.
And a lot of people think, oh, I'd rather have a PlayStation 5.
Again, at this point, the price is not that.
It is still cheaper, right?
What's the...
Yeah.
What's the page 5.
It's that simple.
Buy a PS5 then.
And shut up.
Yeah.
And...
But people seem to forget.
The Steam Library is where it's at, right?
There is so...
How many more games are there on Steam than on PlayStation 5?
50, 100 X?
Like, it's not even fucking close.
And all the wacky shit.
Like, you would never...
That you will never see on a...
Early access titles.
Early access titles.
Just like, just...
And the Steam ecosystem is just...
Valve, I think.
We don't really think about Valve that much anymore because they don't really do.
very much. They don't really ship games anymore because they don't need to.
You know, they're making so much money on Steam.
But like Valve, I think, and this is a good indicator of it,
feels to me like one of the few not shitty companies left.
Right? Like Blizzard, you know, Microsoft, Sony,
they all eventually fell to the dark side, right?
Where the vibes are just off.
Steam is one of the few. It's really interesting, isn't it?
You see all these people, well, fuck PlayStation 5.
If I can't play games on discs anymore, I'm going to go get a PC.
there hasn't been physical discs on PC games for like, what, a decade?
There was a video, somebody put a video up yesterday.
I actually bookmarked it.
I need to watch it.
It was like, why, what the psychological difference is between why people won't accept
digital only on PlayStation 5, but they will accept it on PC.
Like, nobody really complains about Steam.
Because it's mainstream.
And it's because the mainstream people grew up with the consoles and you'd be able to share
games with people.
But it's also because I think, like, Valve and Steve just have better policies.
Yeah.
Like, they don't delist games.
You know, like, I've got games on Steam that I've had for 20 years.
they're still there.
You know, they generally,
Valve are generally pretty good
about not treating their customers like shit.
They're not perfect,
but you know,
you can read the refunding stuff and...
Refund.
Yeah,
I think the biggest thing you're talking about
is a track record.
Yeah.
The refunds and then also the sales.
Sales are outrageous
where you're picking up games
that are 50 bucks.
The story is the front end's pretty well curated.
Big picture mode is not perfect,
but it's pretty good.
It's gotten so much better.
I think that's the other thing about Steam is like,
you see improvements on all this stuff.
Like,
whenever the things launched,
it's not perfect.
and then it gets better and better and better.
Like the Steam deck, when it launched,
it's Steam Deck profiles for stuff.
It was like a great idea,
but it was not well executed.
And now it is.
Now there's all the amazing ways you can think.
That's going to happen with this,
but we're not there yet.
You do get those bespoke versions of the store, right?
When you launch into Steam OS on the Steam Deck,
it's the Steam Deck version,
because the first thing you see is like,
here's the stuff that's great on Steam Deck
because it knows it's on the Steam Deck,
so it's showing you that stuff first.
Again, this is brand new,
but you're going to see that.
When you launch this,
it's going to say,
here are the best, like James,
Steam Machine verified, they've already said,
that's going to be a program,
it's going to be verified,
the same,
runs great on Steam Machine.
And again,
you'll start to see the Steam Machine
presets in the settings menu,
the same way that you see Steam Deck settings
showing up in more and more games now.
That's the thing that bums me out about the price,
is less so,
less the fact that it costs,
just costs people more money,
which sucks,
but the fact that it is going to hamper
the adoption of this thing,
because it's a good thing for PC gaming
for this to emerge as like
the de facto,
default template target PC
that everyone can work to
and have a specific setting for.
You can still go out and build your own PC,
have a 40-90,
or build something cheaper
or get something even more bare bones.
The whole panoply
of PC gaming is still out there for you.
But it feels really nice
to have like one box
that is just the target
that everyone understands
that's the good enough,
mid-range PC,
that we can work to those settings
and it just simplifies everything
for everybody.
Of course that's part of the problem.
is like, so I ran Doom the Dark Ages on this, and it was great.
Let me run it on my, let me run it on my Ninja PC just to compare.
And I can't get it running.
Like, every time, every time I put it out of Steam, it just fucking crashes.
I don't know why.
Well, I do know why.
It's because it's fucking windows.
I still have those issues with, you know, we talk, we sort of drivers and, like, PC
gaming still remains much more of a hassle than console gaming.
But again, I think this is a big step towards getting past all of that.
By having a dedicated OS, by saying this is a gaming box and nothing else, a lot of that stuff over time,
if adoption of this goes up, just Steam OS in general, right?
People start building OEMs can, they can ship Steam OS.
Like, you can buy in like an alien-ware steam-OS machine, like down the road.
I imagine you'd be able to do that or whatever, you know, Falcon Northwest,
whatever PC builder is going to give you a Steam OS option.
And let's show the piece of hardware.
If SteamOS becomes more popular as like the de facto, as a de facto operating system,
that's going to help immensely with a lot of the PC gaming friction that turns people off.
Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah, I, you know, got to take our Steam Machine home this weekend and through last night and at my desk and stuff.
And I've been impressed with it.
I'm not running crazy shit at all.
Honestly, I made a reference to it.
I got back into, I started a new Diablo character season.
I need to, I want to go to Blizcon.
I want to finish the expansion that I haven't done.
you had 80 at him. But I was playing it on the Razor Blade 16 machine I fucking love that is loud.
But I was running it 4K visuals. I'm like, damn, this is the best Diablo's ever looked on my 80 inch TV or whatever.
And then I would fast travel somewhere and it would crash. It would pop up window of like Diablo 4 is out of memory.
And I'm like, what the fuck are you talking about? And I'm down there switching. I rebooted going look. I'm like, it says the memory is and out of it. And then I'm into the fucking Googling of what is going on, blah, blah, blah.
Then I came into work and I just requested the Steam code.
I was running Diablo on this.
That looks as good as it does on my PlayStation 5 Pro
with the settings running here on ultra whatever
and no crashes here or whatever.
And I'm like, I don't know shit about what's different about
me launching the Blizzard, the blizzard.
Yeah, battle net.
Thank you.
I'm like, people like, everybody who's talking about this in forums
has a different way to switch it out and make it work.
And I'm like, fuck that.
I like, the night when it stopped crashing,
I just turn on the PlayStation 5 and played it there.
And then for this working there,
As a PC gamer, as I have been, you know, for like 30-odd years,
you exist in a constant state of fucking low-level anxiety
about, like, what's going to go wrong?
Because you've been conditioned that way.
It's like, when you, let me ask you this,
when you turn, when you start to play,
you press play on a Xbox or a PlayStation game,
you don't even for one second think,
oh, is this going to work?
Like, what if it doesn't, what if it crashes?
What if it doesn't, what if it doesn't boot?
What if my PC just, like, restarts?
No, because this shit just fucking works.
There's one spec, and that's, you don't worry about, like,
having weird parts that your PC might have.
Every fucking time I load a game,
even though in 95% in time it's fine,
I'm like, is it going to work?
Please don't crash.
And then honestly, the final straw was yesterday
when I was playing Helldivers.
And I remember what it was now.
Fucking Meta Horizon Link,
which I don't even know it was installed on my machine.
I haven't used my Oculus with the PC in years.
Meta Horizon Link needs to update.
Do you need to...
I mean, I understand you don't know this,
but I'm in the middle of a fucking...
Maybe this is what AI should be used for.
I'm in the middle of a fucking firefighting hell divers.
Maybe don't dump me out
to a fucking point.
Somebody in the chat says you turn on Windows gaming,
it would have disabled that or whatever, some bullshit.
So,
you know,
they have this thing now that's shipping with,
some people have it,
some people don't,
but it's starting to roll out now
on Windows 11,
this thing called Xbox mode,
which is essentially their big picture mode.
And again,
it's confused,
they've made it so confusing.
Like, where does PC stroke Windows gaming end
and Xbox gaming begin?
Like, the Xbox is a brand,
but it's also a console.
All like,
except from the beginning,
all that this is an Xbox stuff is nonsense.
They'd find it,
they finally realize that themselves.
It's very, very confusing.
And Helix maybe is their way to kind of consolidate it and make it make more sense going forward.
But I think it's going to continue to be weird.
I don't know why, but it's been said many times before.
Like, why did it fall to Valve a third-party company to build the best PC gaming store?
Well, they'll push back on, though, about what you're saying here.
VAL consistently does the things that Windows should have, Microsoft should have shipped one of these a long time ago.
What's that?
He filibusters.
He filibusters.
He won't give up the floor.
He filibusters.
I'm just push it back on this.
It's like the, you were bringing up the argument of booting up a game and then it crashes or whatever.
It's like there's a lot of problems with the proton proton experiment.
Yeah.
Like having to do all that stuff.
There's a lot of times I'm booting up games with Steam.
And it's like, oh yeah, no.
It doesn't just work.
Like it does not just click in.
It's like that is kind of an expected thing that you kind of have to do.
And that is, I'm going to say, unacceptable for how they're presenting.
presenting this as like, it's a console, it's a console.
It's like, no, this is a PC with a nicer, the way it functions like a console perfectly so far is,
you hit the button on the controller, switches HTML, it turns on and your games are there.
Can you play the games like a console?
The answer right now, I would say definitively is no.
There's an asterisk that most of the time you can, but like not all of the time.
But you would agree that it is a big step towards that.
100%.
Yeah, 100%.
We were never going to get there overnight, but I feel this is the biggest, like, quantum leap forward
towards getting us down.
I think you give it a year or two
when people are shipping dedicated
like Steam OS builds of their
games, you're going to start seeing that.
And of course, there are other issues as well.
For example, one of the games
that Digital Foundry benchmarks was Alan Wake 2.
And they pointed out, you know,
you've got to go through the back door to get that running
because it's not available in the Steam store, right?
It's an epic...
Thanks to fucking Tim Sweeney,
aka we have Gabe Newell at home.
You know, we have to fucking go to these other stores
that aren't properly supported.
So you've got to do the proton thing,
fall guys, you know,
whether it's, I think Epic Store is really the only,
is Epic's the only other,
because everyone else is on Steam, right?
Is Epic the only company that forces you to use their storefront?
I can't remember.
I mean, but they have, you know, they have, no, but I mean,
like, all the games are available on Steam, though, yeah.
There's still a little bit of bifurcation there.
So, like, you know, Alan Wake 2 is a game that you very, very well might want to play
right, it's a major, major game.
But because of the bifurcation and I'm not a big fan of Monoplies,
but because it is a bit more of a wildburst than the PC,
they have to, they,
there's not a simple way
to fix that problem yet
as long as there's going to be like a second storefront
that this doesn't support
you'll get you are
I mean you can get Alan Wake 2 for example
or four guys or something that's only available
you can get it running but again you got to fuck around a little bit
and the whole point of a box like this is
you don't have to fuck around anymore
so during our episode of Gamescast plays
we could Roger said you know what runs really good
that I was testing last night Andy
Miles Morales Spider-Man said sweet
booted it up crashed every time
froze the machine, likely because of the PlayStation launcher or whatever that is expected to pop up afterwards.
So it's like, I, I would, I don't love the caveat that like, no, things aren't perfect yet,
but hopefully they'll get there.
But when something's that expensive, it's like they should be fucking flawless to go,
yeah, you are spending that extra cost, but it is a worry-free, hassle-free experience.
If it's steam verified, right?
Yeah.
And if it's verified and you jump in and then it doesn't work, it's like,
well, then what's verified?
Yeah.
That's not,
that would not happen.
I mean,
as big and powerful as Valva is,
they were never going to be able
to engineer a situation
where the steam machine shipped
and every game on the scene library
and on other stores just works with it, right?
But again, I think this is the beginning
of the process, not the end, right?
The box just shipped remains to be seen
if it's going to be successful.
Hopefully, you know, prices will eventually
start to come back down
and things like this become more viable.
I do think that having Steam OS available
for your OEMs and people
just make their own rigs with it,
is a, that's potentially more significant than the box itself.
The box is like the cornerstone of it,
but Steam OS in general,
as a gaming alternative to Windows,
it just allows you to buy or build a console like PC,
you know,
either yourself or from any number of vendors,
including Valve.
That, to me, is the real story.
It's like just getting away from all of the bullshit that comes.
I can't remember what the game was the other day,
but I was playing it because I was still using my Lenovo Legion,
which is a lovely machine.
I love playing games on it.
But it was like, there was some thing that popped out,
and said,
you can't play this game because of this window,
thing. I'd never even fucking heard of. And I had to like spend
10 minutes Googling it and go deep, deep, deep into window settings to turn off something
so I could play the game. And that is exactly the shit that we don't want to be doing.
There's a recent game in the last couple years that
required a lot of people to go into their bios.
And I don't remember what it was. It was Battlefield, I think. The recent Battlefield.
It was nuts. Like, that is such a deep level of
nonsense.
It was unbelievable.
Yeah, I actually think it may have been
Call of Duty as well. Yeah, secure boot,
anti-cheat. It was a fucking nightmare.
And I was like, I can't believe
like Normies are having to do this on their
gaming laptop if they bought it Best Buy.
Right.
Like, what a nightmare, you know.
And again, if you are selling this as a console-like
experience, you have to deliver on that, right?
Because there are going to people that have never used a PC
that are thinking that this is going to be, oh, it's an Xbox
bit, it plays PC games, great.
It's not, that's the goal.
it was never going to be that from day one.
But for what they have delivered on day one,
really fucking impressive.
Like, again, performance way better.
I was amazed.
So my friend who used to be my hardware
and my tech editor on PC Gamer came over.
Because you want, it's a person
I'm going to pass this one on to.
And I was running the benchmarks.
And it goes, holy fuck, this is way better.
And it is.
It is.
When you actually see it running
and you're seeing those numbers
and you're seeing like the frame times
and everything,
because all the little scalers are up on the benchmark,
it's like,
holy shit, like this little box is a really fucking capable PC.
And again, to me, it's less to do with the performance.
Because this could be 10 to 15% less performant.
And I still think it's a good box because it's really the form factor and the,
again, the console like experience and just getting away from all that windows bullshit.
I think not having to deal with it.
I think from my personal gaming experience, I thought I was a shoeing to want to buy this.
And I'm somebody who has, you know, disposable income and I don't have a wife or kids or,
you know, I could just spend money on myself
and I was like, I'm a shoeing to buy this.
I was like, I'm a shoeing to buy this and...
Fish in a barrel.
I think I'm just going to wait now for
the next handheld
of choice.
You're telling me not to get the Lenovo go
with SteamOS, the 2, the version 2.
I would not do that right now.
It's $2,000 fucking dollars.
Insanely expensive, but it has Steam OS.
And it's more, way more powerful than the Steam deck,
because the seam deck is just older by this point, hardware-wise.
But I think my next buying decision is going to be whatever the next handheld upgrade is
to then just use that as the dock.
Oh, you're docking.
Because I've done that.
Oh, yeah.
Because I've done that with my Steam deck.
And it's cool to do that for the really small indie games.
Like I played a decent amount of Alabaster Dawn or, you know, Slay the Spire.
But there are times where I'm like, I kind of wish I would want to,
I kind of wish I could just stay sitting here playing that, you know,
double A, AAA, AAA game.
But, you know, kind of looks like garbage on the Steam OS.
The other, I mean, this is new because this has been a feature of Steam and Steam OS for a long time now.
Even if you're just running Steam on Windows is cloud saving, flawless, works really, really well,
just pick up, because I play Holdivers and other games, like, in different rooms around the house,
and it just sinks up.
The ability to, and these are like less advertised features, but like, for, you know,
And again, any PC running Steam will do this,
but this just does it a little bit more cleanly,
is that you can throw from this to your Steam deck,
right,
and be playing Steam Machine performance on your Steam deck,
the same way as essentially the PlayStation Cloud or whatever.
It's the portal.
No, not even over the cloud,
but like directly from, you know,
it's basically running the Steam Machine game on your Steam deck, right?
It's just streaming it to your Steam deck.
Oh, right. Yeah, you're not from the cloud,
but from your IP.
Yes, exactly right.
And then I didn't even know this was a thing,
but I discovered this by accident.
I was installing something,
oh,
when I was installing Helldivers on the steam machine
for the first time.
The transferring thing?
It said,
oh,
do you want to just like copy this over
from your other machine that already has it?
Like it'll be faster than downloading again.
Brilliant.
Yeah.
Like it's,
oh shit,
how clever.
And again,
it is a lot faster.
You know,
everything's on the same network,
so it's detecting those different machines.
I just,
I'm really,
really impressed with it.
And it's,
to me,
it's more about Steam,
OS than it is the box because I think you are going to see proliferation.
Don't forget, when you build a Windows PC, you still have to pay for fucking Windows.
Unless you go get the gray market code, right?
But like, who knows if that's going to work?
Do not do it otherwise.
Like, that's the only, it's offensive how expensive Windows is.
Yeah, you're a mug if you, I don't know what the retail price is for Windows 11 home right
now, but probably like, what is it, like, $100, more than $100, I would imagine.
I bought a code for like $10 on Amazon.
But again, that's a crap.
It might not work because those tend to be like older.
It's an older code, sir, but it checks out.
like it might not check.
Gary,
thank you so much for being here.
I do want to get through the super chats.
We have quite a bit.
I want a lightning round these,
which I know is a risk here,
but I want to get to him
because everyone was so great.
Clawmaster says,
Gary,
how do you feel about blessing cursing your team
right before the match against Argentina?
England's been cursed since 1967,
so what else is he going to add on?
You can't inflict any more pain and misery
in me as an England fan that I've already experienced.
Sky says shout out, Gary Wood.
I really missed you over here.
Oh.
Look out for my own show, which we're doing, right?
Signs dog official says, I'm voting with my wallet.
Give Gary a weekly rant show, please.
Yeah.
I'm through.
I'm through.
If I want to do it as me or as a...
Show up.
Show up, and the show is yours.
Whatever you're here.
We'll just give you the show.
The random drinker says,
finished Batman Fortress.
You the man, Gary.
What a...
Oh, yeah.
That was fun to write.
Thank you.
I enjoyed that.
Resolut says Gary the goat.
Are you willing to leak that gun dogs been picked up
to become a video game?
That would rule.
No, nobody fucking bought that book.
JBC says Gary is it coming home
I'm cautious I want to believe
I'm cautiously optimistic I will say this
regardless of whatever happens next
this is the most fun I've had
as an England fan in my entire life
and I've watched every World Cup since 1978
England hasn't won the World Cup since before I was born
they won it 66 I was born in 72 so I've never seen
them lift the World Cup
we're as close as we've ever been
the vibes are good
just like I mean
Even if my final memory of it is fucking everyone in the crowd at the Azteca singing,
Hey Jude to Jude Bellingham, that alone is, that alone is a fucking trophy.
It was just, the vibes are just so immaculate this World Cup.
Despite Trump, despite FIFA doing everything they can to fuck it up,
this has been an incredible World Cup.
And it reminds me just in the bigger picture of like, I think it was John Stewart,
who said it, that people are not their governments.
And if you get past all of the other bullshit and look at like, you know,
I was a sorry thing the other day were like the Argentinian Barclay.
barbecue pitmasters because Argentina was playing at Kansas City for a minute.
The Argentine barbecue pitmasters that were over there for the World Cup
were like hanging out with the Kansas City barbecue guys and like teaching how to do
Argentine barbecue.
And it's like, it just reminds us that we're all fucking one people and we just
fucking love each other if we just let these pricks get out of the way.
Shambau Baggin says, just want to say thank you to Gary.
I made my girlfriend play The Walking Dead for the first time.
And shocked when I saw your name in the credits, the game still held up and the ending
destroyed her.
Very proud of that game.
Thank you.
Lightning Black says, Tim, have you considered
the box plates for PS5?
I've never heard of these,
and I'm looking at them now.
It just essentially turns your PS5
into more of a PS2-looking thing.
Oh, really?
Looks a little chintzier that I'd like it to,
but I like the idea.
Right?
Like the fuck, just like the fucking bunker
that they built over Chinnobel.
It's kind of interesting.
And then the final one here,
I'll kind of get,
I want everyone's thoughts on this.
court Hightower says as a PC
Curious Lifelong console only
gamer is this the right machine to buy
to pop my PC cherry or build my
own rig? I mean
again the price is going to hover over
everything but like that aside yes absolutely
yeah
it all really just comes down to what you
find valuable with
for your money and maybe
as
less of a hassle free experience
as this is compared to a normal PC
maybe like maybe you're like Greg and you see Windows and you go yeah but I know Windows on my
handheld device that's easy for me and to me that's like crazy but Greg's like no I like I like
windows I'm like all right sure maybe that maybe Windows is more comfortable of an experience I would
say like if you have the money spend your money and buy something awesome but that's like coming
from a place of going like yeah if you have also we didn't even we didn't even touch on it but like
there's so many nice little touches on this like it has a little RGB light at the bottom right
That's so cute.
And you know, you can do the RGB stuff with it, like make it do rainbow breathing effects
and stuff like that.
When you download a game, that turns into a progress part.
Did you know that?
I don't know.
When you're downloading a game on Steam, the blue light will kind of like intracross it
as a progress bar.
So like lots and lights that are only going to come with this machine.
I think the face plates are fun.
God, did you guys talk about the companion cube thing at all?
Oh, you've done games daily.
To this question, though, right?
I think I'm the most of this.
As somebody who just crossed over, you know, in the last,
a year and a half, 18 months, right?
Where if I, for me,
handhelds are way more important than
the boxes that are underneath the TV or whatever, right?
And so if eliminate that from the equation,
I would still never, ever, ever want to go build my own PC
from the PC problems I had,
granted back in the late 90s, early 2000s,
when I was doing kind of stuff like that.
And so for me, then, yeah, I would recommend
if you were looking to buy a box and just have ready to go,
yes, I saw people already popping off.
well, the Costco's got this tower that's cheaper and this.
There's a million other ways to get around it.
But I think in terms of plug, play cuteness, it's just doing this.
It's built to do this one simple thing.
That's what it's doing.
I'm with Gary of like even using the razor blade that I love.
It still is.
All right, we'll open it up and then I have to log in and then I have to come, you know,
and then I've seen people.
Well, you know, you can get around it using this while I can't.
My steam controller doesn't talk to the PC like a normal piece.
So it's, well, you could if you did this.
And it's like, there's a million ways to sit there and build.
your own way to make all this shit work the way you want it to.
And for me, it is opening the laptop, letting it see my face and then letting you boot
to big picture and I'm off to the races.
But if I didn't have that and I didn't have that power, then yeah, this would be as close
as you're going to get to a console PC that plugs in.
See, I'm on the opposite side of you where I'm just like, it's not though.
Like it's just not quite good enough to be that experience.
So I'm like, if you are interested in getting the PC thing, I think we're still at a point
building your own is the only way to go.
it's a point of investment of I am willing to put in the work
I do want to touch on that though because I sometimes get irritated
when people online or whether they say just build your own PC
it's not that easy to build your own PC
like to build their own PC like to build this and our enthusiasts you do it all
the time I've built my own PC and I consider myself
knows more about you know PCs and computers than the average person
the average person especially if they're coming from like I had an Xbox or I had a
PlayStation or whatever and now I'm going to get into PC gaming
it is not that easy to build your own PC
everything like selecting the parts, making sure everything's compatible.
It's easier than ever.
PCpartPicker.com, you go, you do it.
There's a lot to know.
There's a million things that can go wrong.
When I first built mine, like it didn't post first time.
There was like one thing that it took me forever to figure out what was wrong with it.
And again, you're always going to have some jank, right?
The best thing about this is every developer that ships a game knows exactly what is in this box,
exactly the same way that they know exactly what is in an Xbox or a PlayStation.
When you build your own, they don't know what you put,
they don't know what the fuck you put in there.
Like any kind of number of like weird little conflicts and things that most of the time
it won't be an issue, but it will be.
And I come back to this.
I haven't done it several times.
For the average person, the average person building a PC is I think probably a little bit
more than they're willing to take on.
Once you actually realize what's involved.
My big point that I wanted to end on is do not buy a PC right now.
Do not build a PC right now.
It's the worst time to do it.
Like if you're a PC curious, you wait it a little too long to be curious.
Like I think that's just the reality.
I don't think it's going to get better anytime soon.
And I think that at that point, if you're really interested in PC gaming stuff,
it's like you're going to have to just buy a used handheld gaming device to some extent.
And that'll get you access to the Steam Library and things like that.
I mean, it's weird, isn't it?
It has led us to this conversation where we're now, this is a broader conversation.
But like, do we even need another generation right now?
No.
Graphics are pretty fucking good.
And I see these things all the time where people are comparing like visuals from like 10 years ago to today.
like I think somebody was running like Titan Fall 2
or even compared to something you played.
Games don't look that much better.
Like honestly, we could happily be playing on this
or the Xbox Series X or the PlayStation 5
for another 10 years.
Just extend the fucking generation.
Like, why are we going to spend
$1,000 for another console
that is like going to be marginally better than the old one?
Maybe this is a good,
fucking, a moment for all of us to like exercise
some fucking frugality and just like,
be happy with what you have
rather than play.
Because these new consoles when they come out are going to be ridiculous.
Horragies.
I don't know.
And that has been Gary Wooda's Steam Machine Review.
Everybody, let us know in the comments below how much you want a weekly Gary Wooda show.
