What's up and welcome back to another kind of funny live reaction this time to the Nintendo Direct for Kirby Air Riders from Mr. Sakurai himself. It's not actually live. I know Nintendo loves, I mean, Nintendo owners and Switch 2 owners love their sort of of, you know, the attach rates are always amazing. We know their game's sell a lot, but I just wonder what the audience will be

for this video game a year from now. But everything leading up until the city trial thing was very underwhelming. And this was, that was the one thing that was like, oh, I'm way more into this than everything you've shown prior to this. Greg. Yeah, this will be an interesting one.

I think this presentation was good, like we're talking about it, warmed up. The city trial stuff's frantic and crazy at the end, and I would like to do it. For me, Greg Miller games criticism person, I will want hands on sticks. I think this was a very long presentation with a lot of information for a game and IP I'm not familiar with. So as a cart racing fan, I want to try it and play it and see how it feels to step back from that. But keep keeping it, yeah, at $70, I wouldn't take the chance on this one.

Obviously, we'll probably get review codes for this. And then what will be interesting is introducing it to Ben. Ben loves Mario Kart World, does play it every chance he gets. gets. He was playing it last night when I came home. So introducing this to him, probably hot on the heels of him playing Forgotten Lands, it'll be interested to see what that is. And with that battle mode,

or the city trials, being so frantic and leading to races and leading to cool minigames, I could see him and me doing that a lot in a way that we do battle mode in Mario Kart World tour, but he prefers just to do free roam with me there where we just drive around and chase each other. This giving a little bit more like, hey, we're doing all these things

and collecting all this stuff. stuff to then go do this. I think he could really get down on that. A lot more active in that. Yeah. Yeah. Bless. Yeah, this looks super fun.

I didn't play the original Kirby Air Ride. Me and you talked about it earlier on KFG. And so going into this, I was very interested on what can you show me to make me really interested in the game. And everything they showed me got me really interested in the game. I think I'm, I differ from Andy in the sense that before we got to the city trial mode, I was in on the visuals.

I was in on the idea of, like, combining the different characters with the gears and like how they look how how fast the game is all this shit right like i think the idea of having something that is traditional cart racer but then taking a strong swerve into being this weird thing i'm all the way into i like the pace of it i like kind of like kind of like the roller coaster kind of aspect to it it all speaks to me and then when you bring in the city trial stuff all that stuff looks really fun i think the price conversation is tough and that's all obviously going to be a to each their own as far as what money means to you and how much money you feel like you have to spend on the games that you want to buy.

In the review code conversation, like, if we get this game for review codes, if you have enough and I end up getting one, yeah, I'm going to play the fuck out of this game. Would I spend $70 on it? That's a totally different conversation. I won't know until it's out. I was going to say that's part of the review, right? When you get the review and you know, yeah, yeah. And you see other people playing and talking about how much they're into and your friends.

But like, I think regardless of that, I think the thing that excites me about this game is that it is a weird and more kind of a niche idea that Nintendo has. in their bucket that they're reaching into and giving this kind of attention and this kind of polish and this kind of thing too and I don't want to

I don't want to take that and then go oh I'm only gonna pay $70 for the most mainstream of games like I want to look at something like this and go oh shit this is like a weird take on a type of game

that has been around over 20 years like I want this to be a thing that is like supported and celebrate and all that stuff and so I think that goes to a deeper conversation about price I think separating price out of it this looks cool to me

I think this looks wonderful yeah I'll jump off right where you ended there and say like the, I feel hypocritical with my thoughts on this game because on one hand, there's no way this game should be $70. Like straight up, period. This game should not be $70. And on the other hand, it's like, I'm so happy this game exists.

I can't believe we're getting a non-Smash Brothers Sakurai game, let alone a follow-up to something that was very flawed, but very beloved back in the day. I have many memories. I never own this game, but renting this game many different times for city trial. I mean, my friends and my neighbors would come over and we'd play the hell out of it, because it just had that multiplayer Nintendo fun, and there was a lot there, but I never once considered buying that game,

you know, at a time that I was buying games and buying Nintendo games. So, yeah, $70, I do think is a tough pill to swallow. It seems like they're trying to make and present this as if it is a step up, and in a lot of ways it seems to be. But I have a lot of concerns with that price tag, and that's, I think, more about Nintendo overall

than anything else. What are your gaming drawbacks that you saw from this? as somebody who, you're the only one here who's played the original. I mean, the thing is, it doesn't play like a cart racer. I can't stress that enough. And you get your hands on the stick and the button, and you're either going to, you're not, when you first pick this up, it's just not going to play the way you think it does. And your brain's either going to be able to click and be like, I get it and go,

or you're going to be like, why doesn't this play like Mario Kart? I don't like it. And I feel like from that, it's like a lot of us grew up with Mario Kart racers working a certain way. But a lot of us, sickos, also grew up with. 3D Sonic. And I think that this game has a lot to relate to 3D Sonic games of the way the momentum works and the spin dash and just the stopping your direction in 3D and changing

and shooting off. I love all of that. There's a lot of really cool stuff there. And at the end of the day, Sakurai makes incredibly detailed games, but I feel like he gets lost in the weed in the details a lot of the times. And I look at all the Smash Brothers games, some of my favorite games of all time. And then you look at how many modes those games have. And then how many of those modes are actually worth to damn. Yeah. And I think that Kirby Air Riders is a perfect example of just,

that is the core of the game. It's just all the different modes being thrown into one. And I think the difference is it works more for this type of game than it does for a smash game because the smash gameplay is like so great. Whereas this, I think because it is doubling down more on the gimmick of this type of racing, which is no other game plays like this. So I'm excited to see what they can pull off with it. I love, again, that he's making.

making a new game and getting a 45 minute presentation. I am undeniably more excited for this game now than I was yesterday. Okay. Having seen this. But it still really, really, really concerns me. It's not $70. I also think it's very telling that this didn't end with them being like, hey, Kirby Air Riders is on NSO.

Now you can play it because this is the type of game. They just spent 45 minutes explaining here. Yes. Gotcha. And I think they don't want people playing that game. That's my theory. Why? because I think they're going to play that and be like

I'm not spending $70. Got it, got it, got it. Everything gameplay-wise in everything having to do with traversal in that sky map or whatever looked like so much more fun than roaming around in Mario Kart's open world for me. And that's one thing that I thought

was going to draw me to Mario Kart's Open World and it turns out it wasn't even close to being like a diet version of Forza, which is always kind of like what I was hoping that they would do with it. But something about just the way that these machines work and move around seems a lot more enticing than again.

Fuck, ah, damn it, I undercooked that turn. Let me reverse and kind of everything looks a bit more kind of active and frantic here and I really enjoy that. Yeah, I think it's given me, I think the Sonic comparison is interesting because I think part of what interesting, to me in this is like what my dream of what I always want Sonic to be, but it rarely ends up

being, which is like take advantage of that fast-paced momentum in that roller coaster kind of gameplay and turning it into something that has substance. And you're right that like, not many other games really do that. And when I look at this, I look at the city trial stuff, specifically how the stat system works and how that flows into these different mini games that you're kind of building yourself up to and then getting to choose and try to like battle of, all right, no, I'm, you know, I got more heavy stats and more powerful stuff. so I'm going to go for a minigame that does this. That kind of thing, and how that all comes together seemingly, I'm like, oh, this looks

fucking awesome, right? Like, I'm with Andy where I look at this and I do get more excited than, like, I guess how I feel now after playing Mario Kart World and dropping off a world after a couple weeks of playing it. I don't expect to play this for months and months and so maybe it is where I'm at after Mario Kart versus where I'm at now after seeing a direct for this. But I look at this and I'm like, man, this looks fun, this looks different. This looks like something I want to get into.

I think right now I'm in a place where it's on. them to let me down based off of what you're saying to him as far as like you know this is it kind of is what it as far as like the one or two buttons and then go right like if it really is that slim as far as what they're bringing depth wise then I think that that that's going to be a rude awakening when this game comes out for the people who saw this and what then went oh man I'm totally in on this I'm going to spend $70 for it even then though like it is that simple then adding another button does go a like it sounds like a joke but that it adds so much more uh potential here, having all the specials, having the different characters have different stats and then having all the different cards and, sorry, machines.
