Starting point is 00:00:03 This episode of Gamescast is brought to you by Movement Watches. Movement Watches was founded on the belief that style shouldn't break the bank. The Watchmaker's goal is to change the way consumers think about fashion by offering high-quality minimalist products at revolutionary prices. Greg gets all fancy for his dates with fancy Genevieve, Saint-Aange Miller, and guess what? He's never late. Why? Movement watches. Movement figured out that by selling online, they were able to cut out the middleman and retail markup,
Starting point is 00:00:27 providing the best possible price, classic design, quality construction, styled minimalism, it's all there. Get 15% off today with free shippings and free returns by going to movement.com slash kinda. That's mvmt.com slash kind of kev, big kev dog. Come here. Oh, it doesn't look good. Come show the people. It's just like a dark thing.
Starting point is 00:00:47 There you go. Moving watches. Build it. Beautiful. What's up guys? Welcome to the first ever episode 137 of the kind of funny games cast. As always, I'm Tim Geddes. He's joined by one of the coolest dudes in video games.
Starting point is 00:01:13 Greg Miller. Bonjour. Sure. And we're doing a little one-on-one today. I like it. First time in a long time. There's a story that goes around in all of the Bibles I've ever read. That every 137 episodes of the Games cast, you get a one-on-one with beers.
Starting point is 00:01:30 Cheers. Cheers. Cheers. The last one we did, we had wine, right? Or was that the plan? It was back of the old studio. I don't think we ever had wine. We're going to have a wine date on the Gamescast.
Starting point is 00:01:41 I think we just planned that and never actually happened. Instead, we're having a warm. beer date. Yeah. Is the fridge broken? That was my thing. There's a... Did these...
Starting point is 00:01:48 Did someone pull these? I didn't want to like blame Joey. Because there is, there was a box of these outside. Yeah. But I thought pretty clearly you wouldn't... What happened? All the beers cool guys put in yesterday. There's a bunch of cold ones down there.
Starting point is 00:02:03 I mean, Kevin, you know what? I ask so precious little of you with this company. I want you to make the shows run and work live. I want you to edit the videos. I want you to make sure the name bars are right. I want to make sure that we can do complicated let's plays that we don't have the equipment for. I want to tell me the equipment we need to
Starting point is 00:02:19 complicated lets plays for. I want you to upload versions of the show that are both video and audio, but I need one of them without ads, one of them with ads. I also need of the audio versions. Not only do I need the MP3 that only goes to SoundCloud,
Starting point is 00:02:32 I also need a wave file that goes to Ban Camp. Yes, we still published a band camp. On top of that, I need to make sure that they're... Which is even more complicated. Tim, I'm going to get to your responsibilities in a second. It's not mine. Kevin, I also asked,
Starting point is 00:02:44 of course that there's paper towels in this place, that there's coffee in this place. I like to make sure the bills are paid. I like to make sure that of, no, you walked away in the middle of this because you're working really hard and this started off.
Starting point is 00:02:54 It was one of, it was a cool Greg. I'm sorry, hold on me to out back. It was a neat Greg submarine. Where I came in and everybody thought I was about to torpedo them to Kevin and really shit on Kevin.
Starting point is 00:03:06 But instead, I swerved as submarines do and ran through all the things, not even all the things. Many of the things Kevin do proving how tough his job. is and that he should be respected. There's so much going on always.
Starting point is 00:03:17 Let me know when we're live. Before we get into the whole thing, you know, this is the show every week. We could talk about video games, all the things we love about them. Shout out to Patreon producer Tom Bach. You are the man,
Starting point is 00:03:29 the myth. The homie. The homie, for sure. You can get the show early by going to patreon.com slash kind of funny games. How early? You can watch it live like so many of you are right now.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Thank you for that. Stephen J. Osland. And feminist nerds. I see them in there. every time. Yeah, yeah, big fans. Um, of them. We were big fans of them. They're fans of us too, I think.
Starting point is 00:03:49 That's how it works. That's the best friendship. It works. Or if you don't want to watch live, you can watch it early when it is released on Fridays. Or you can just wait and get it free on the following Monday. And it's great. Everyone has a good time. I have a great time. I do you have a good time, Kev? Yep. What's you playing right now on your switch? Tetris! Still playing that Tetris. Love that Tetris. As much as you play that Tetris, it's a big surprise, you can't beat me. I.
Starting point is 00:04:11 Oh, big man. You just wait until you get that. title. You just wait and then someone's... Well, that's what you're waiting. When I beat Nick for the kind of funny video game World Championship. Take it from him. Give us the update. What's the status of the kind of funny world championship right now? Everyone knows that Nick has it.
Starting point is 00:04:25 He's had the kind of funny world championship for quite a while. He actually is the math. He is the longest reigning champion. He's now the longest reigning champion and kind of funny world championship history, which drives me crazy, of course. It makes me want to dig my own eyes out. However, at GameStop Expo, we were watching... Him and I did the NBA 2K18 segment.
Starting point is 00:04:41 and it was announced there that he would let me challenge him for the title in NBA 2K18, which a game he's never played. And a game that I dabble in, but I'm not an expert in. You know what I mean? But I'm going to be, I don't think he knows the rules of basketball. All his life. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:04:55 Exactly. He's not going to know to when you go up for the jump shop, release to the top of the jump shot. He's going to come right down. He's going to double dribble. He's going to travel. It's going to be horrible for him. And I'm going to take it back from him. So I came out of the morning show today.
Starting point is 00:05:08 I screamed at him a bit. I'm sure you're very quiet. No, no, that's not what I did. At times I was because I'm doing the up and down promo where I got I leaned into the side of his head to yet to talk in his ear whisper and then yeah exactly whisper talk like that and so now this weekend apparently we're going to film a party mode down in LA. This is the let's play family union. Yeah. And we'll put that up on our channel later on. And I will win the title.
Starting point is 00:05:32 But apparently then Kevin is going to challenge me in Tetris for the title, which I accept. I will tell you right now in an unprecedented kind of funny world championship move, Kevin. I don't have the title yet. I'm accepting that challenge, though. Oh my God. Fuck, yes. And what I'd like to do is, I'd like to figure out if we could make a money-in-the-bank case
Starting point is 00:05:49 that you have then. Do you run in any time? Anytime, you can come to my house with cameras. I believe that's a briefcase. Yeah, well, we need-plenty. We got plenty. We got a little pelican cases that we can do that with. Yeah, but I mean, like, you know,
Starting point is 00:06:00 if we had it like right now, that'd be cool. We don't have. But I'm giving you that. When I win, it's all on. And then when WWE 2K-18 comes, I do want to have like a fatal four, Fatal Sixth Way. Elimination chamber
Starting point is 00:06:11 multiplayer match to see who can walk away. Sean Finningin talking a lot of shit to both of you about Tetris. He thinks he can beat both of you in Tetris. This conversation's live right now. Is he texting you? He actually said that at the same time too. It was when we went to Kevin's bachelor party. You guys were playing and then he was just like,
Starting point is 00:06:28 I'm the best of Tetris there is. Oh, it's funny that we were there together and he said this all under his breath like a cowardly bitch he is. Here's what I'll say. Oh, damn. On IGN Fire Team chat, Sean Finningon is the dead weight that Fran Mirabella the third and Destin Legerry have to carry around in that show.
Starting point is 00:06:45 Cause Sean is what I call a fake gamer boy. He's a fake gamer boy. His power level on destiny right now is pitiful. It's fucking awful. I think last I heard, he was still 167. He can't understand why he can't crack 200. He's terrible at video games. And if he ever wants to come get his fucking ass beaten Tetris, you're allowed to come here.
Starting point is 00:07:03 I won't put the title on the line that I don't have yet. But I'll put, I will fuck. We'll make a unification IGN title between kind of funny. and IGN. We'll call it the intercontinental, we'll work on the name, but we'll get a belt that goes between both organizations
Starting point is 00:07:16 and we'll do that. Intercontinental championship. That's how Edge used to say it. I do remember that. He reek of awesomeness. He did reek of awesiness. Yeah, I appreciate Edge. What's you been playing, Greg?
Starting point is 00:07:26 What's your story about Edge real quick? No, I'm just going to put it out there that I am, I haven't been this excited for a WVB game in quite a while. Yeah. And I think it's just the fact that cool Greg likes wrestling, so I know I'll have someone to play with what'll make it interesting.
Starting point is 00:07:38 Because at IGN when I'd play these games or even on my own, nobody else really wanted to play them. So the problem was I'd go start off in these WDB games, but then you're just playing the computer over and over again. You're doing these storylines, which is fine and you enjoy it for a while, but you fall out of it. And then you try to go online and the kids online are way better than me. But me cool, Greg and stuff. What's the deal? What's the deal with wrestling? With the NBA 2K18 right now being out on the switch only digitally, but I'm not seeing reviews anywhere.
Starting point is 00:08:01 I feel like that's the type of game that, you know. I have not been following that one closely enough to give you heads up on what's happening. there. Are you sure it's still only out digitally? Can you look up NBA 2K18 on the Nintendo Switch? See what the release date schedule is and also see if there's reviews out yet. There's also a lot of problems with microtransactions. Kids are upset about that's been going around too. We talked about it today in games daily, but I again haven't gone in depth enough to figure out what exactly everybody's mad about. I just have been focused on beating the pants off Nick Scarpino and then taking care of his Italian sausage.
Starting point is 00:08:33 God, I don't like how that sounds at all. But you know what I mean? I want to beat him in the match and then. Touch his dick. NBA 2K 18 Nintendo Switch review The Price of Ambition This is a review by Kat Bailey Over at USgamer.net Now scroll to the bottom Just tell me what the reviews
Starting point is 00:08:45 Do they score stuff there? Oh, too far, too far. A three out of five. This is again, the US gamer review by Kat The Nitty Grady interface After all these years, NBA 2K 18 still doesn't let you skip My career's cut scenes
Starting point is 00:08:57 resulting in a lot of boring downtime as you wait for Doc to finally shut up and give you a haircut. Load times are a bit long. There's so much to love about NBA 2K 18 on the Switch, but there's no denying that there are some major flaws here, especially in the flagship, My Career Mode.
Starting point is 00:09:10 As much as I love NBA, 2K's ambition in celebrating, nope, in creating a full portable port, it's tough to wholeheartedly recommend in light of its persistent technical problems and other niggling flaws. Never heard that word before. It's a dangerous one. I wouldn't, yeah. I would just be like, you know what? I'm just not going to use this.
Starting point is 00:09:29 It's obvious flaws. It's problem. All right. Cool. So there is, there's some reviews. But like, again, like Nintendo World Report and U.S. Gamer. I get U.S. Gamer is a thing.
Starting point is 00:09:36 Well, Kat's been behind this one. for a while. She was the first one who was really writing about like, hey, this is what the Switch version does and we were all quoting her and sourcing her. Okay. But like, where's the IGN review? And I get sports games, whatever, but still, I'm... No, they would have had it. It seems, yeah. I don't know. Seems a bit fishing. I'll look in the IGN specifically. Seems a bit fission. All right. What else you've been playing? Well, to be very boring, Destiny 2.
Starting point is 00:09:55 I promised people that we're not going to talk too much about Destiny 2. Sure. Specifically because you have not beat the raid yet. Right. So you don't have impressions and thoughts on all that stuff. But you did have something interesting and new, a new perspective on Destiny. Sure. I'd like to hear about it, Greg. So what I've been playing is Destiny 2 and then Friday of 13th. Yesterday we filmed here a giant seven person Friday the 13th let's play for party mode.
Starting point is 00:10:18 It'll be up in the coming weeks as long as everything turns out. But Kevin says it all turned out all right. Because good job, Kevin. That was a tough setup to you. I did not say that it's all turned out. You said yes, last night when you came over for dinner, you said it looked pretty good. I said the audio worked. That's all we need.
Starting point is 00:10:30 The audio work. People love podcasts. They love Friday 13th podcast. It was just that. And so the night before on Tuesday, we did a practice match. You weren't there, of course. But it was me, Andrea Joey, Andy Cortez, a bunch of best friends. Thank you for joining and answering my call on Twitter.
Starting point is 00:10:47 And what was weird for me is that it's 2017. It is. Online gaming's been around for a while. I've never been that guy. I was talking about being a story horror. I was talking about the fact that I like single players. I like doing this kind of thing. I never play the online modes of anything.
Starting point is 00:11:00 Earlier this year, someone wrote in, one of the shows. It's just a, you know, it's a blur at this point saying, was that still true? It seemed that Greg so far this year is leaning more towards multiplayer stuff. The obsession with Friday the 13th. The division. I was getting excited for, yeah, I planned. Well, does it, do I plan on this year? I've played the division of the past. I talk about it. Whatever. Yeah, I've been playing the division. Uh, and then I was so excited for Destiny 2 coming into Destiny 2. And there's some other online game. Oh, Marvel heroes, but I don't really count that. Doesn't matter. But I'm playing more and more online stuff, more multiplayer stuff. And I kind of blew off. And I kind of blew off.
Starting point is 00:11:34 the question. It was like, oh, well, you know, no, I'm still mostly excited for the, you know, your single player experiences, all these different things. But like, that's just da, and then we're playing the thing. We played an hour of Friday 13th, got the rest of us. We're all in great shape. And then Andy was like, hey, Greg, you, you want to, you, you want to raid? And it was 11 o'clock. And I'm like, moof. I'm like, no, I do not. It is late. But yes, I do. Let's go raid. And Andrew's like, I want to come. So she jumped in. We went over. We joined up with, uh, Danny. Stoke Danny. We joined up with Sean Pitts. Yeah. Griffin, all them. And, and,
Starting point is 00:12:04 ran the raid and I was trying to go to bed at a reasonable hour. I just wanted to get an hour and I told Andy I would do one room. We ended up going all the way to the boss. Then we got the thing where you get stuck of the boss similar what happened before where we did multiple multiple tries and it was you know, I looked down at the clock and it was 1.30 and I'm like, all right, I'm really going to bed now. I'm done. However, this is the first time in my gaming history where I've been playing a game, an online game, having a great time, having a ball. And then someone else in the group was like, hey, do you want to go play this other game? And I was like, yeah, and went and did it.
Starting point is 00:12:39 And it all happened so seamlessly. It was, it was, uh, a transition that made sense. I'm, I'm, I'm not that kind of gamer, usually, right? Like I'm, I'm, I'm going to go home. I'm going to play this story. I'm going to do this thing. I'm going to, well, after that, I have this, these three other games I need to get to. I'm going to jump around and do that.
Starting point is 00:12:57 And I've talked a bit about it in abstract, not being able to put it all together on games daily. And the fact of like, you know, right now my pile of shame of games when you go into my PlayStation 4 and you hit on the library or you click on the folder of games and you go in there and it's five right persona five's there 100% I'm gonna beat it fuck you cheeks junior persona five near automata now last day of June thimbleweed park was on there but what I was talking about where this came up is now it's a switch game great I have to play something on switch while I'm around the road but it was the fact that I keep
Starting point is 00:13:28 keeping destiny at the front Friday the 13th at the front and Marvel heroes at the front these games as services, these online things that I'm always going to jump into. And the fact of the matter being that I have now this history or I guess, you know, this repertoire with these three games of when I do have an hour more to kill, right? Like, because what would have happened in a traditional day if I didn't care about destiny or I wasn't into that game, hey, do you want to go play this? No. Turn off the PlayStation because I'm not going to jump into one of the games, the pile of shame games when I have an hour to play, what I thought was an hour to play. But now that I have these other games, I'm like all about coming back to those worlds and reinvesting more time and doing it.
Starting point is 00:14:07 And it was really weird even to start up Friday 13th again after a month or two off probably since my last game of Friday 13th, even though as again, somebody had written in on Games Daily saying like, you know, is that a game you'll come back to or what would bring you back? And I'm like, what's weird about Friday the 13th, Marvel Heroes and now Destiny, but I guess Destiny doesn't count. Marvel Heroes and Friday 13th is I don't feel like I need to come back to those games because I feel like I've never left those games. Those games are still the forefront of my mind. And I guess. I'm still on the subredits. I'm still reading about the DLC.
Starting point is 00:14:36 I'm still stoked about new maps and new Jason. Or like, you know, they put out a press release yesterday that there was, you could now play as Venom if you jumped on. I jumped on to Marvel Heroes, made sure I got Venom. Like, it's bewildering all of a sudden that these three games of services are kind of filling what I want to play and what I want to do.
Starting point is 00:14:53 And that's pushing everything else off in a very weird way. And the fact that I still haven't, you know, platinum uncharted lost legacy. Now granted, you know, that was a fine game. It's not like I'm in love with it and thought it was the most amazing. anything ever, but it's an easy platinum and I should get back to that. But now I'm way more invested in getting my light level up in destiny or going back to Friday 13 than just having fun there. And it's this really weird thing. And I know that there's so many people out there
Starting point is 00:15:15 watching or listening who are just like, I've been doing this since Xbox one. I've been doing this since, or you know what I mean? The first Xbox. I've been doing this since Xbox 360 or your PS3. Like I haven't. You know what I mean? To be into these groups and have people like, you want to go play this other thing? Like, yeah, sure, I'll go play that other thing rather than it's weird to suddenly have this connection in a way to, a Jen's younger sister who does this where she has her group of online friends and they're all on their discord all the time
Starting point is 00:15:39 even if they're playing different games but then to be playing something like all right we're done with Overwatch who wants to go fuck around in Minecraft who wants to go do this and it's something we talk about a lot I think on all of our shows of like all right cool like people are playing PubG or they're playing Grand Theft Auto Online and they're rolling into this other thing or they are playing the division
Starting point is 00:15:55 and they're rolling into destiny and they roll back into this they're going to siege and stuff. It's weird that it all happened and I didn't see it coming and it all happens so slowly and now I feel like I have roots in these communities and that I'm enjoying it. And I want to keep doing that to the point that, you know, I always made fun of, uh, years ago when Destiny 1 first came out and Destin Legerry brought his PlayStation 4 to New York when we were going out for New York Comic Con because he wanted to make sure he got what Zer got. And it's like now this weekend we're going down
Starting point is 00:16:19 to do this, uh, let's play house family reunion thing. And I'm bringing a game's case with my PlayStation 4 because if there's downtime, I want to get online and play some fucking destiny and do that. It's really fascinating and weird. It's awesome though. I mean, it's, it's funny because I mean, I'm still not that type of gamer. I suspect I never will be. But what you're saying, it reminds me of, and I know I get shit for Tom about Smash Bros so much, but Smash Bros. is like the only game that I felt like with every DLC update, with every little thing that they added or changed or even leading into the game, like items or characters being revealed through screenshots and stuff. I knew that game and know that game so well just from everything in it, you know? And when
Starting point is 00:16:58 DLC was announced, it's like I cared. And it's like when we, when our job is to report on game news or whatever it is that we do, right? Yeah. Commenting. But when we, when we, when, like, in games daily or whatever, it's like when you choose stories that are like the Friday the 13th DLC roadmap. Yeah. It's like that's so specific because you give a fuck about it.
Starting point is 00:17:18 Whereas I feel like the people that care do. No one else cares. And it's like, that reminds me of with Smash Bros. Where it's like, to me, I'm like, oh, this is. Yeah, we got a report on this shit. This is the most important thing that there is. but it's like to the people outside of that community, they don't give a fuck, right?
Starting point is 00:17:32 I hear you. I don't agree with you, but I hear you. I mean, hearing people talk about stuff, it's like you just gloss over because it doesn't mean anything. Sure.
Starting point is 00:17:38 But I, the weird, the thing about doing games daily, which is, hey, here's the nerdy news of video games for the day. There's plenty of times that I put, I think great,
Starting point is 00:17:47 a great example was, uh, two days ago with Andrea when we did the PlayStation recap for TGS press conference, where it was like read through it all and told everybody what it was. And it was one of those things, Andrew, you got anything to say? No.
Starting point is 00:17:58 Yeah, me neither. Like, these aren't my games. I want you to know about it. I guess there's the, I want to give you perspective on what I think's interesting about Friday 13th and this. But I also think that
Starting point is 00:18:06 there's a, at least when I plan games daily in the shows about video games, the conversations I have video games about video games. And I think this speaks to when I would do up at noon. We're gonna get ready.
Starting point is 00:18:18 I love this one. I want you. Let's go. When I would, I think when I did it up at noon and we'd have Mike Donatiselli come on to talk about Wild Star. Everyone knows I don't give,
Starting point is 00:18:27 I'm not an M. I'm not mostly an MMO person, DC Universe Online represent, but it was also the fact that I probably would never play Wild Star. And that was okay because I was a host delivering news and I can interview to people like nobody's business, right? And when we branched off and did this and started chasing our passion projects and stuff, and like, yeah, I'm going to do Friday 13th. We're going to stream this, blah, blah, blah.
Starting point is 00:18:44 There have been those moments where you and I go host Final Fantasy. And clearly, you're the Final Fantasy guy, but I'm not. And people are like, why are you doing that? Or when I went to Lawbreakers or Boskey and I did the Lawbreakers video, there wasn't much because people are, I think, thinking me as a host again like that. But it's that thing where even on Games Daily, I want to provide stuff that might not be in our wheelhouse, what our wheelhouse is. I want to give you a breath of what's happening here. And then I think that even when it's a Wild Star interview,
Starting point is 00:19:10 a Cliff Blasinski, Lawbreakers, I'm not a first person shooter guy for the most part, or a story on Games Daily. There's a story beneath the story. And I would argue with Friday the 13th, right? Even if you don't care about what that content roadmap is, I think it's really fascinating they're trying to do all this before October 31st. I think it's really fascinating that this game that came out and was a success on Kickstarter and then stumbled at launch and then everybody had an opinion about and sold too well. Like there's that undercurrent there of like these people are still supporting this game in a very interesting way. Like I think those are the stories I try to get to when I give you, hey everybody, this shit's happening in a game you might not care about,
Starting point is 00:19:45 but there's we're going to bring it back to a wide. Yeah, for sure. And I, I, I, that makes sense. I'm just thinking like when it comes to like WWE roster updates. Like the roster was announced. It's like it's just it's hard to to kind of commentate on game news when their video games are such a broad thing. 100%. And we miss stuff all the time. We miss so much things. And we don't understand so many things.
Starting point is 00:20:07 And we don't understand the like intricacies of a lot of the TGS. 100%. Yeah. We don't know. That's just not our wheelhouse at all. Well today there's another good example of it on Games Daily. I did a segment where I was like, just like, you know, We started off with the games we don't care about.
Starting point is 00:20:21 And it was somebody talking about why is no one, including us, talking about Marvel versus Capcom Infinite. And the other guy, I mean like, hey, no one's talking about Divinity Original Sin 2. And it was both of them talked, the one guy being like, hey, why is this not happening in general in gaming for Marvel versus Capcom? And the other guy being like, hey, I know PC games aren't your thing. They are my thing. This game's great.
Starting point is 00:20:41 75,000 concurrent players. Like, people should know it's great. Yeah. And like, I really appreciate that, that people are getting what our shows are and what kind of funny is, which I always makes sense. Absolutely. And then like I guess going back to what I'm saying is like I would still talk about the smash. Smash Brothers updates because I care. You care about Friday the 13th. So you're going to talk about IGN's not covering that. You know, other people aren't going to be covering the it'll be an article, but they're not going to on game scoop or whatever talk about the Friday 13th. Hey, listen. No one's playing with all due respect to my knowledge. No one at IG is still playing Friday 13th and having updated impressions. And I point in list like you. Sorry, for the people who aren't watching live a second ago and before we went live and we're talking to the chat. that somebody in there was like, why isn't the Friday the 13th DLC live on the story? And I'm like, motherfucker, why isn't it?
Starting point is 00:21:24 Because I was going to go home and download that or when I get back to my desk and stop editing, download that shit. And like, that's the really interesting thing, I guess, right now about where I'm at, you know, I mean where I'm at literally right now with games is the fact that like, I feel like, you know, I've been lucky enough in this decade to be really associated with PlayStation. And like, that's because it was my beat. I knew it better than anybody I'd argue.
Starting point is 00:21:48 and like that's what it is for me. And that's what it was at IGN being in charge of the PlayStation team and leading beyond and the PSI Love You and now this. But even that, I think as PlayStation's gotten so popular and so diverse and then also the fact that they have their first party stuff, but they lean harder on third party than ever before and not a bad way. They're killing it. It's that thing of, well, where is my community?
Starting point is 00:22:09 You know what I mean? Like what is that? And I haven't had, even if you want to talk about PlayStation's being a community, which I do and I'll be at PSX and I'm super stoked to go hang out, probably. it's the idea that that's not the same community as the destiny community, the Friday the 13th community. The idea that, you know, now embracing, I think, in a way that I didn't understand before the fact of, I want to play Friday 13th, tweet out. Hey, who wants to play Friday? I don't have to play with randoms.
Starting point is 00:22:35 You know, we have our kind of funny clan, but it's also the same thing of like, hey, I just made my group public. Who wants to come join me and run a fire team or whatever? And I want to do a stream for Destiny 2, for Twitch subs that's, hey, Greg will come join your game. I'll just join on you and play whatever you're playing and whatever you need to do and do that like every hour switch off of somebody else. Because that's the thing, right, where it's like, uh, Frank Furlano. You remember him? If you, if you do it home, one of the final beyonds we ever did where me, Brian and Colin went up to Toronto to see Frank for his, like, his version of Make a Wish, but wasn't what it was. Still talk to Frank all the time. He's been hitting me up,
Starting point is 00:23:11 like, hey, I want to play Destiny. And I'm like, all right, cool. And then like, I get pulled away. Something happens. And there was a weekend where I was like, on, or the Wednesday, I think, when I'm like just playing destiny. And he hit me up. He's like, hey, let's play. And I was like, all right, what light level are you? And he's like, or power level. And he's low.
Starting point is 00:23:22 And I'm like, I can't. Like, that's not, today's about grinding out to try to get to here to do that. But like, it'd be awesome to be able to reverse them. Be like, it doesn't matter. I'll come fucking shoot shit wherever you want to. Yeah. Yeah. But then we're all busy, stupid all time.
Starting point is 00:23:34 Stupid work. We are stupid and busy. Yeah. No, just stupid busy, I said. So, you know what I've been playing. What's that? So I talked about this a lot last week. Sure.
Starting point is 00:23:42 But this project Octopath Traveler. I have an update. Okay. Last week I was like, I'm not going to play the other campaign because. How long that lasts? I think I played it that night. It's just like,
Starting point is 00:23:53 I kept thinking about the game and it was like, I am just so in love with it. Yeah. Where I'm like, fuck, I want to play more. So I did, didn't enjoy Oberg's campaign as much as Obrerick.
Starting point is 00:24:03 Yeah, Oberich. O L. I was joking around. I wasn't calling you on it. I just don't know. I want to make sure I got that right. Gotcha.
Starting point is 00:24:09 And then Primrose. But I did enjoy her story. more than his. However, the gameplay is just so good. And the presentation is just, it's unbelievable, man. Like,
Starting point is 00:24:18 it every second I have with that game, like there's moments I'm looking at. I'm just like, wow, like this is stunningly beautiful. And it just makes me want to love it even more. And the square put out that survey that they said they were going to and they emailed me. Anyway,
Starting point is 00:24:32 everyone to download it, they emailed it. And I'm just like, wow, this is cool that they're actually going to listen to feedback for a game that it wouldn't typically get that type of beta run. You know, It's like we're used to first person shooters in these big online games,
Starting point is 00:24:45 having a feedback loop where the creators can kind of see what the community wants from it. But for an RPG, like a very obscure JRP, that's cool that they're like, all right, what can we fix? What are the quality of life things that we're going to need to fix for the final release whenever that happens? I feel like that's gaming in 2017, right? And it's awesome to see a company the biggest Squarantics get it. But hey, we're putting out this game that is definitely a passion project that we don't expect to set the world on fire. So I'm going to do Final Fantasy 15 numbers. We're putting it out there
Starting point is 00:25:14 and we want to listen to you. We need to listen to you. What do you like? What don't you like about the game? And that's awesome. It's fun to see all the lessons I learned that you grew up with, but I learned from VidCon and like internet, whatever you want to call, but internet late 2010s or whatever of like, no, no, we're all in this together. And you're making a product for an audience that if you give them what they want, if you listen to them, if you treat them with the love and respect they treat you with, you'll get it back tenfold. 100%. The same thing we do, right?
Starting point is 00:25:47 Yeah. We're fucked up. Here's how we're gonna fix it. Here's what we're doing. We're on a great track. What do you need? What do you want? What kind of shows do you want?
Starting point is 00:25:54 Yeah. And what's been super cool for me is that so many people have been tweeting me like, oh man, I gave this game a shot just because you said I should. Yeah. I fucking loved it. And it was great. And like, you're used to that type of stuff because like you've been, you know, covering games for so long.
Starting point is 00:26:06 And like, also you have that. kind of eye for the taste maker things are hey this is off the beaten path or whatever and obviously a lot of people know about project octopath and Nintendo is giving it a lot of love sure focusing on it on multiple either directs or presentations or whatever um so how like i'm like unique in this yeah you're not the only person out of the end about it yeah how long is the demo so the demo is it's complicated because it's a very meaty demo and there's two campaigns you can go through each one is roughly an hour and a half I would say.
Starting point is 00:26:38 Oh, wow. Okay. And, but then once you do, I mean, you could even probably get it down to an hour if you, like, are just powering through. Sure. Looking for everything. But that's when the, the credits roll. But after the credits, you can keep going. Okay.
Starting point is 00:26:52 And like, that's why I, I, on both. Is progress and carryover or anything? No, no, no, no, no, no. I need to doubt it. Because I was like, I'm not going to go through, go much farther. But, like, there are hours and hours and hours of content. I'm kind of stupidly excited for this L.A. trip. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:06 Because I haven't on a plane in, like, like, a week and a half or a half or whatever. So it's like, hey, hey, I'm actually going somewhere for a length of time. And like, I'm taking the switch with me. I was called the Vito, rest in peace. Taking the switch with me. And I, you know, I, what am I, I want to play something. And that's why, like, I really want to play a thimbleweed park because I've been putting that off forever. But like, I need to try this. I think. Well, so here's the thing. The whole reason I bring this up is this is my pitch to you. Okay. I think that you should download this game and play through the girl Primrose's, uh, campaign. Okay. On the LA flight. Okay. I totally think it's worth your time.
Starting point is 00:27:37 and you might not love it, but I think that it's worth playing because I know you're not a huge JRP guy at all. Sure. It takes away. The special one has to grab me. I think that there's something special about this and it totally is the love letter
Starting point is 00:27:49 to yesteryear of like what those games used to feel like. But it controls and has like these, and I mean it has today's sensibilities. It's very, yes, exactly. And it's just like I think that there is something very cool there that I want to know
Starting point is 00:28:03 what your take is on it because it's awesome, super awesome. But the other game I got to play, Super Mario Odyssey. I don't like you. Speaking of the Switch. I got to play it for a couple of hours. Sure.
Starting point is 00:28:13 And it totally changed your idea and you're no longer here being a hater ass hater. I mean, so for background on that. I was never being a hating ass hater. Everyone's listened to the show. They understand. Tim's always been like,
Starting point is 00:28:22 I don't like Super Mario. Super Mario, one of my favorite franchises of all time. Undeniable, it is top three. Any way you shake it. And that's 2D and 3D versions of it. And every variation of that. That includes the three.
Starting point is 00:28:36 3D land and 3D world, which I absolutely love. Great games. The obstacle course based. Another thing that I'd love to get through Odyssey and the next year see like either a new one of those or hey, here's a repackage of those for your Switch. I'd love that so much. Yeah. Specifically a new one.
Starting point is 00:28:50 But also 3D World deserves to be played by more people. I'm with you on that. It sucks. That game is so damn good and people just are upset that it was trapped in the Wii U and that it wasn't Odyssey. It wasn't the successor to 64 and Sunshine that we just haven't seen that style of game. playing so long. So I understand that people are craving that. But I'm happy we're getting it now. And we definitely are having played this game. This is, it's fantastic. It is so much fun. It is beautiful and
Starting point is 00:29:17 amazing. It looks so fucking charming. And it's just all it's it's it has that Nintendo magic. It's that thing where especially I mean, we talk about this all the time, but considering that being portable. Yeah. Like that's like for me, don't get me wrong. You know I love Breath of the Wild. I'm not trying to take anything away from that. But Breath of the Wild was very much like, okay, cool. I don't feel like searching for every shrine. I want to see the ones I see. Oh, I need to upgrade. I need to this.
Starting point is 00:29:41 I'm going to look for the shrine. I'll do that. Super Mario Odyssey definitely seems like the kind of game where I'm going to be like, cool. I'm not progressing until I've gotten every moon here or I'm not doing this. We'll see. We'll see how long that lasts. But I'm with you.
Starting point is 00:29:54 So much content. I mean like on a flight, I'm not playing another level. I'm trying to get all my moose here. Gotcha. Gotcha. Yeah. It is like there's so much.
Starting point is 00:30:02 And I was shocked where it's like, even within one level that on first glance, I'm like, hmm, there's not much geometry going on here. There's not many platforms to be on. So I don't know how much there can be. Even in a one little area, there's like five moons you can get in totally different ways. And even we did a let's play. It's over on YouTube.com slash kind of funny games.
Starting point is 00:30:22 You can kind of see a lot of what I'm talking about. But there's this, there's a clear path of where you're supposed to go. But then there's like, all right, if you go around this rock and it's like, so of course you're going to go around the rock to see what's over there. Sure. And then it's like, oh, you can't get in there. So you have to figure out, all right, how do I break down this? yellow block. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:37 You realize, oh, you have to take the power of the hammer, bro, go break it with the hammer or pans, whatever, because it's luncheon king. Pan bro. Um, break it through. And then you get into this secret room. In that secret room, there's a moon. And it's like, it's obvious how to get that. There's, you have to collect five little ones and then you get it.
Starting point is 00:30:51 And it's like video game 101. Yeah. But then there's a secret moon in that secret room. So there's two moons in that room. Yeah. Which is all rhymes. It sounds fun. But, uh, that to me was the thing that's like, God damn.
Starting point is 00:31:03 Like, there's just so much where it's like, even, when you think it's like, all right, cool, I understand this. It's like, oh, no, there's more. Yeah. You know, and that's why I'm like, they're nailing it so far. It is super fun to play and all that.
Starting point is 00:31:15 To go back to my criticisms of the whole thing. You don't like Italians. I do not like Italians. But that hits close to home, that's because we work with Nick. I am also Italian by default. What? It works.
Starting point is 00:31:27 No, your mom's a hippie. What do you mean what? By default. Kevin leaning, your microphone explained this. I've never heard of this before. I don't know what he's talking about. I just,
Starting point is 00:31:35 he's Italian. He's hippie. I think it's weird. I think it's weird that you said by default. Oh. That's, by birth. That's better.
Starting point is 00:31:42 That's better. That's better. I don't know. Default does make sense, I guess, but we're getting off track. I'm just saying you're racist. Yes,
Starting point is 00:31:47 yes, yes. So the Mario games, I feel like, as somebody that 100%'s Mario games, so you can get all the extra green stars or whatever the fuck and like all the shit. I have been a little tired of Mario's art style in the last 10 years. Okay.
Starting point is 00:32:05 Oh, that's a little bit. great point because we've talked about this before, right? That it was cool to go from 8 bit to 16 bit. Then you get to 64 bit and we feel like we've been iterating on that Mario since. That art style sense. I mean, ever since he's had a voice, it's been this kind of Saturday morning cartoon. Yeah. Mario or like the Mushroom Kingdom, you know what it's going to look like.
Starting point is 00:32:23 That character model or variation of it has been used in the, the party games, the sports games, the this game, like all the Mario spin-offs, right? And they all have the same aesthetic. Even Mario plus Rabbids has the same, same look to it. Sure. Right. That's a great point. When you look back at not even just 8 bit, 16 bit, whatever, but it's like even within
Starting point is 00:32:40 eight bit, it's like you look at Mario one and then Mario two, I know is a weird one, but then Mario three. And it's like those have unique visual designs that tell the gameplay what is going to happen. Like Mario three being a stage play, that affects the level design. That affects how it all works. Yoshi's Island being the coloring book and all that stuff. Like I loved that.
Starting point is 00:33:02 I loved that. There was always some new fresh thing. Once we hit in the two D, the Super Mario world had that just very like the dinosaur lands. Yeah. The locale's being different. But then also just the colors were different. And it gave it a unique look to it. There was definitively 16 bit.
Starting point is 00:33:21 And it was like that looks different. Mario animates different than he did in the eight bit days. But then once it got to the new Super Mario Bros. series, that's where it all really kind of was like, ooh, you just took the look for Mario 64 in the 3D games. and put into 2D. Sure. And now you're just doing it again and again and again and again and again and again. And so especially in the 2D way, I've just been sick of it.
Starting point is 00:33:44 And it makes me enjoy the games less, even when the level design is immaculate. So are you feeling that way with Odyssey? So that I think has been my big thing against Odyssey where I'm just like, it is just more Mario, which I know first world problems. That is still a great thing. But it's just kind of like, oh man, I would have loved it if it looked different. I would have loved it if it had a different style. And I feel like we've seen little glimpses of it.
Starting point is 00:34:07 Like even in like new Super Mario Bros. You where there's a whole bunch of those levels like there's that one that looked like the starry night painting. And then we see the thing that everyone does where there's the like silhouette and shadows and stuff. Oh, little style thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Donkey Kong returns and Rayman and all that stuff. Sure.
Starting point is 00:34:27 But it's like you see little bits of that. And even in honesty, there's, there's a map, a world we got to play called the Cap Kingdom. which is the first kingdom we play in. And it does have this nightmare before Christmas vibe. And it's cool. And I'm like, oh, wow,
Starting point is 00:34:39 like this feels different for a 3D Mario game and the style of world that I'm used to seeing. But then you get to the other worlds, like the two we got to play, which were Lunching Kingdom and Seaside Kingdom. And it's like, don't get me wrong, they're great and they're awesome. But it's like,
Starting point is 00:34:56 oh man, this just, this reminds me of a galaxy levels. This reminds me of a very specific galaxy level. This reminds me of a very specific world in Mars. 64 and I get that you can't change everything and it's like I don't know what I'm really expecting but it does just feel kind of like yeah this is this is good this is what I expect from it do you feel that the ability to change outfits at all negates or moves into that because before I let you
Starting point is 00:35:20 answer one of them for me the most exciting thing about watching every piece of gameplay footage they put out is like what else is he going to dress up and I know like we make fun of the nipples and all this which I loved I love the swim trunk Mario and I love him with the the the, the, uh, liberating. Exactly. He's free.
Starting point is 00:35:36 Let the nipples be free. I love him in the, uh, poncho, you know what I mean? And I love him in the top hat and the, with the, it's like, I can't wait to get this game to see what other crazy outfits there are to see if I unlock a bajillion moons, what do I unlock for him?
Starting point is 00:35:50 Is there some super suit? Is there all this different things? Like, can I get back to having the yellow cape and running around? Like, there is a shit ton of outfits. Yeah. Even in the little demo we played. Like there was a lot of options in every world.
Starting point is 00:36:03 there's way more you can buy at the cap store and all that stuff. There's a lot of cool stuff. However, at least as far as I know, it's all cosmetic. Sure, that's fine. I don't care. It's cool. It's great. But I guess that goes back to it where it's like at the end of the day,
Starting point is 00:36:16 Mario 64 was, you know, you jump into the paintings and the castle and all of that. And the more I think about this game and the more I talk about it, I feel like I'm complaining about bullshit. But it's not bullshit because it's like I care so much about this. And it's been something that I've had an issue with throughout, the last decade of Mario games. And there's something about Mario 64 and Peach's Castle feeling like a character. You know?
Starting point is 00:36:41 Yeah. And that alone was so cool. Just the hub world was so interesting. And when you go to Galaxy, the hub world sucked. The comet observatory thing. It's like there was nothing fun about that. Exploring it felt like a tedious chore instead of a magical discovery. Discovery.
Starting point is 00:37:00 And I feel like Mario Sunshine for, all the things that got wrong, like Al DeFino was cool. Like it had a vibe to it. And it was fun to explore the town and to find where the next levels were to figure out how to open up the portals to those levels. And so that's why I was like, all right. And then Galaxy 2 was just like, you know what? We've figured out that the gameplay of Mario Galaxy is 10 out of 10 top notch. We're going to cut the hub world.
Starting point is 00:37:26 It's just going to be level select and you can use your stupid ass Mario ship to together things. I'm like, great, cool. like let's cut the fat from this and just focus on the good. Mario Odyssey needed that like next level, um, way to make the game progress and from level to level. Have you seen that in your demo? I haven't seen it yet.
Starting point is 00:37:47 Okay. And it does seem like it might be going a bit more of the, uh, Mario Galaxy 2 approach, which is more of a mission style level select thing, um, which I'm not like totally against if they're not going to, like I would rather that than the comet observatory.
Starting point is 00:38:00 Sure. But it's like, I'm a little bummed that it doesn't seem like there is some cool ass hub world, you know? And, but what if the worlds are so cool? That's my thing is I, I mean, New Dong City,
Starting point is 00:38:12 people want to make fun of and like, we look at some of the other stuff we've seen, like you're in the one with the fire and then, you know, the stuff from the last play. Lunching Kingdom. Those worlds look cool. They look like characters.
Starting point is 00:38:22 And it is that thing of like, how much can I really explore New Dong City? What can I go into? What can I go into? I don't know the rules yet of what can I go into. But running around and exploring those things, seeing what's her name, Paulina, she's around the mayor, Paulina. Like, I'm excited, well, sorry, I think it's just Pauline.
Starting point is 00:38:36 My apologies. I'm excited to get in there and see this. And that's what's really going to be fascinating. I feel about getting this game out there is the fact of you, I feel like, should be such a slam dunk. This looks awesome. This is amazing. And I know you think that about the gameplay.
Starting point is 00:38:48 I know, I know, I know. I'm not trying to take away. But my wonder is, will this game not let you down, but not check the boxes you're talking about? However, exceed everyone else's expectation. because I feel so many people are like me that lapsed. And even though I played Mario 3D world ain't land, right? Wasn't that the other one? Land was the DS1.
Starting point is 00:39:10 World was the W. Okay. So I played all of those for a little bit. And like when we did the Wii U one at IGN did a bunch of lets plays, the four player, got the crown, lost the crown, that kind of crap. And I was like, this is so much fun. You're sliding down the musical notes. Like I have memories of that game that I'm like, this is great.
Starting point is 00:39:25 However, when it came out, I was like, I'm not going to try my way you to play this shit. You know, I don't want to play this fucking thing. You missed out. What? My thing is, my thing is, you know, did I? Because I feel like I'm starving for Mario, a Mario game.
Starting point is 00:39:34 I feel like the last definitive Mario memories I have other than the musical notes and the few less plays is Galaxy 1. Galaxy 2 for some reason I played, but I guess I played it. It was like, oh, this is a lot like Galaxy. Whereas like Galaxy 1,
Starting point is 00:39:46 I remember it vividly on what I was doing and what I was playing. I feel like there's more people like me that are like so like, fuck yeah, the people who bought the iPhone game, right? And it's like,
Starting point is 00:39:56 whatever, it's Mario, let's try it out. Let's go. Like, I think they're going to get this. And I don't know if people like, if people like me are going to see the same. No, they're not.
Starting point is 00:40:02 I mean, that's, you're absolutely right in what you're saying. And also, to be clear, I love this game. To be clear, he said he hates it. We all heard it right here. Kevin Maken, no, called this episode, Tim Hates, Mario. No, it's interesting because I guess what it comes down to for me is the flood gimmick in, and I don't use gimmick in a bad way. It's just, it is what it is.
Starting point is 00:40:22 Yeah. Mario Sunshine. They would call it the flood mechanic. It defined that game and it made the level design work all thinking about that as the point of that Mario game. Yeah. The point in this Mario game is throwing your cap to take over other
Starting point is 00:40:37 enemies or friends or whatever and getting through the level that way. And I'm like, that alone is interesting. That alone is the thing that is a cool gameplay game. That is going to be awesome and that is going to define what Odyssey is about. But my problem with that is so far in my experience,
Starting point is 00:40:54 it's not always fun. And granted, I'm sure I'm playing the very early bits of this, which you can't judge the game based on that because you, I'm constantly like, I get exactly what I need to do here. It's like it becomes more about just the motor skills of doing things instead of being challenged and trying to figure out how to do it.
Starting point is 00:41:15 And in early Mario Sunshine, that was the same way and then eventually use your flood in a whole bunch of different ways. So I'm hoping there's more of that, but it's like taking over the different enemies. My worry now, and again, I'm being so critical of this game, but it's because I love it. but I want it to be perfect is it's not always fun
Starting point is 00:41:32 to control the things that you take over. And a lot of them feel very similar. The hammer bro. Okay. Kind of hard to aim where the hammers go. And it's like, all right, cool. I get it.
Starting point is 00:41:42 That's part of a schick, right? Part of like I can't ever fucking hate you. Yeah. But then in the same way that the hammer bros always just move by jumping around. You have to move by jumping around. And it's just like it kind of feels cumbersome.
Starting point is 00:41:54 It's not nearly as fun to control as Mario is. And you're not in extended. sections where you're right there way so that's fine because I mean wouldn't that be the argument of like oh holy shit I'm a long time Nintendo fan and now I am one of the hammer bros and I am only able to do that I guess the thing is like it's just not fun yeah like it's just not the novelty of that wears off quaklin yeah it just becomes a thing of like oh now I need to transfer to this to be able to swim over there and it's like it's not as um exciting is it giving you the levels they look I look at them right and they don't seem basic because I need to figure this out
Starting point is 00:42:28 but does it, is there that aha, I, I've discovered what I need to do moment or am I, are you too early in the game? Cause I would, too early in the game. I would assume take over this guy to get across that to do that is like, oh, I see what I'm supposed to do. Whereas like getting it, how do I get into this secret wall is a different thing. Totally different thing. And like there, there's so much random cool things in the game. Like you've seen the 2D sections that are like, I love those style. Yeah. It is very cool. And I think that they're, they're very smart and they're very Nintendo designed in the sense that,
Starting point is 00:42:57 you go through it and you're like, oh, I know what I got to do. And it's like, oh, there's always a twist though. Yeah. Like there's always a thing of they play on your emotions. They play on your nostalgia of what you expect. And then it's like, no, there's actually another level to this. Nice. That's great.
Starting point is 00:43:10 But yeah, when it comes to taking over things, I just feel like at least in the early game and at least of the things that I've seen, so much of it relies on, oh, there's a thing really high up over there. Oh, here's the enemy here. I'm going to get this and he's going to let me jump really high. Yeah. So much of it relies on jumping really high or just kind of turning into like a spark and going through electrical. wires. And I mean, I get that video games need to have some type of rules of like where you get from here to here. But it's like there's no difference between doing that or using your grinding shoes in Sonic and going down a rail. Like it just feels kind of like getting from point A to B instead of it being fun to get
Starting point is 00:43:45 from point A to B, which playing as Mario is so much fun. Sure. It is so amazing for the first time in hell of years. I don't know to do the math, but like 16 years since Mario Sunshine. where Mario feels perfect. Being able to move in the 3D space and him not being limited to standing, like ground pound, run, run faster, jump. Like having the triple jump back feels right. Having the spin in the circles
Starting point is 00:44:16 and then jump so he does little like share floaty thing. It feels right. It just feels so much more acrobatic than he has in so long. Like Galaxy had a limited moveset compared to this and being able to throw the cap and especially with motion controls, being able to throw it where you want it to go. It was way easier to do it with motion controls
Starting point is 00:44:33 than it was with the button. Yeah, with the stick. Unfortunately, but it was. But it's like, man, I can't wait to see how much platforming is in this game. And granted, this game doesn't focus on platforming. Neither did 64 or Sunshine. But I think that there's going to be some brilliant levels
Starting point is 00:44:50 that do use it. And I can't wait to see what those are. Yeah, I can't wait for this game. And again, it being portable. I mean, it's such a game changer. Like for as down as I'm sounding on this, which again, I want to be clear is right now, my excitement for this is 10 out 10. This game's really fucking fantastic. Me and Kevin left the thing and like we just couldn't stop smiling and talking about and being like, holy crap, man. This game is freaking rad.
Starting point is 00:45:12 Yeah. Very exciting stuff. Okay. You play anything else? No, I don't think so. I, well, I'm not sure what the embargoes. Can you get me another one of these guys? I'll take one too.
Starting point is 00:45:23 If they could be cold, that'd be great. That would be perfect. I either want it to be ice cold or I want you to let them sit in the sun for a while You put him in the pizza oven? Oh smart, all right Look at this smart ass guy We're pretty, hold on one second
Starting point is 00:45:35 Here's gonna want to check I'm gonna look at something Just on my phone Hold on, hold on, hold on Everybody's still there? Okay, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on Yes, okay, cool I can tell you what I have
Starting point is 00:45:50 and what I will play at some point that I'm stoked about I got the sequel to a normal lost phone I don't. Remember how I talked about that here. Another lost phone, Laura's story is out now. It's available on Steam, Android, and iOS. I have it loaded on my phone.
Starting point is 00:46:04 I just haven't had time to sit down and play it. All right. So maybe next week I'll be able to talk about that. Hell yeah. Hell yeah. Now it's time for this week in gaming history. 11 years ago on September 19, 2006, Okami came out. Oh, thank God it's coming out again.
Starting point is 00:46:19 And again and again and again and again and again. You play Okami? No, never have. What? Never played Okami. Oh my God. Yep. I know.
Starting point is 00:46:26 Man. It's a game that is, it checks all my boxes of things I should do. And every time it gets re-released, I'm like, oh, finally here's my chance. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:46:34 PlayStation 4 again. Let's see what's up. Let's get in there. I love Docomi so much because it was another Zelda in a time that we weren't getting any of that. And it was so special. The characters, the music, everything about it was beautiful.
Starting point is 00:46:46 I don't know how much it would hold up. I don't know that I'd love playing it. I definitely don't think I'd need to play it again. But I also don't know if playing it for the first time. It was short. short is, right? Shortish, yeah. But it still was a quality Zelda-like.
Starting point is 00:46:59 What did it originally come out on? Wii. PS2. Okay. And then it got ported to Wii. Because that's the part, I remember it coming out, should have played it, didn't it. Came out then on Wii. That's the time they used the IGN logo on the box art that every fucking thought was
Starting point is 00:47:13 the hilarious thing in the whole time. If you don't remember this story, he goes like this. They release Okami on Wii. The boxes ship and get into stores, get us. And somebody, I think it was a fan, wrote in. like the IGN.com watermark is on the Okami box. And we're like, what? And you get it.
Starting point is 00:47:31 And whoever made the box art just went to, did a Google search for Okami, found IGN's Okami art dragged it over and totally missed an IGN watermark on there. And it got printed and shipped. It was like, what the fuck. Yeah. And then again, it did. It did come to PS3. I want to say.
Starting point is 00:47:48 Yeah, it did. With move. N HD. Did it come with move support? But it also came to Xbox 360. Sure. Yeah. Now here it is coming again.
Starting point is 00:47:55 PlayStation 4? No Switch, which is interesting. I'm sure, well, come on now. They'll re-release it again. Yeah. 13 years ago on September 20th, 2004, Def Jam, Fight for New York came out on PlayStation 2 and GameCube.
Starting point is 00:48:09 What a goddamn game. That was a game all right. Oh, it was Def Jam, Vendetta. Right, that was the first one. Okay. And then Fight for New York was the sequel. There was a bit more story-based and took it to the streets.
Starting point is 00:48:21 And this is the one where everybody was like talking to me of like, oh my God, you loved the old A.K.I. games for wrestling like you know no uh yeah no mercy in wrestling in 2000 like this is like the most close thing we've ever got since then yeah well vendetta was my apologies i'm confused yeah asked somebody who didn't like love them i don't remember oh really the first so the first one was a wrestling game gotcha so that that must that's what that's the time went uh death jam for new york was it very different it was more of a brawler fighter game than a um
Starting point is 00:48:50 wrestling game like there was no ring there was no whatever got so it's like the gameplay it was different too. But yeah, just all your favorite Def Jam artists, a bunch of cameos and stuff. It was for me in 2004. Oh, yeah. Fucking amazing. Timos lost his goddamn mind for this. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:49:03 It was so good. Tia is my boy. Still waiting for the Weezer brawler. Yeah. One day. One day. 13 years ago as well on September 21st, 2004. DDR Extreme came out on PlayStation 2.
Starting point is 00:49:14 I just want to give a shout out to this one. It was the last DDR game that I ever bought. So what year is this? 2004. Okay. DDR Extreme on the PlayStation 2. I will say DDR Extreme, the arcade edition, my favorite variant of DDR. The home edition, not my favorite edition in terms of songless and stuff.
Starting point is 00:49:35 But it was great. And it was finally the first one to bring a lot of the original, like, fan favorite DDR songs to the home market for a bunch of licensing issues. And it was the first one to have a whole bunch of like real American license songs that you can play. So that was a big deal, including DJ Sammy's heaven. Remember that song? No, I don't remember that song. It was a technical sign. It was beautiful.
Starting point is 00:49:59 Beautiful. Whatever. But they all run together. And I was looking up and trying to figure out the, which dance dance revolution I reviewed. And I reviewed multiple. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:08 Dance Dance Dance Revolution Supernova 2. See, that was after. It's what the first one I found. Yeah. September 25th, 2007. Yeah. I was done way before that. The reason I bring this up though, DDR, go for it.
Starting point is 00:50:18 I just want to say, can I give Greg Miller from 2007 a shout out? Yeah. Go for it. DDR Supernova 2 review. The strap on. which is like the subhead on the article. Gonna have you naked by the end of this article. Have you naked?
Starting point is 00:50:30 Because it was gonna, that song was submitted in there. Going to have you naked by the end of this song. But I say, going to have you naked. So that's when they went real hard in the license stuff. But the reason I bring this up
Starting point is 00:50:39 is this was the last DDR game that I bought. But previously, that was a game that I bought annually. Every single one as it came out. You were a huge fan. I know you talked about that. I remember being on game facts on the boards.
Starting point is 00:50:51 Yeah. Where's the new info? Yeah. I was in that community, man. Like I was like, what are you talking about now with? Oh, yeah. I was in it for the fucking DDA. I was on the game facts NCAA football board every year.
Starting point is 00:51:01 What is going on with this game? Tell me about the addition. So weird, man. Such a weird world. Here I am fat as fuck. Wow. Okay. 15 years ago in September 19th, 2002.
Starting point is 00:51:11 Are you still like dieting and stuff? G is still trying to keep you like 30 for 30 or whatever the fuck is called. That's a whole 30. I was ever dieting. It's just she. You were eating better. I, but it's like,
Starting point is 00:51:22 that's just because she. Are you back to putting hot cheetos on everything is everything. No, that was one night. She gave me one night. That was a good night. It's,
Starting point is 00:51:28 I, by default, am eating better because she cooks. Sure. And she doesn't eat bad things. Okay. So, why are you,
Starting point is 00:51:35 well, I'm surprised she doesn't pack you a lunch. Did she pack her lunch? Yeah, it's, that's been a whole thing. He fought it. He fought it.
Starting point is 00:51:41 He won that fight. Yeah. Okay. I mean, did you really win? Because you just go to Chipotle every other day. I don't know that. Who's really healthy there too?
Starting point is 00:51:48 I get the healthy shit. I get healthy shit there. Okay. Healthiest shit. The healthiest chippoly shit, I'll give you a shirt. Chipotle is healthy. If you get the healthy shit, this is real.
Starting point is 00:51:59 How much queso was poured on your food yesterday? I had, that was, that I was telling you. I did that because it's new. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm just a small time. Pizza lawyer.
Starting point is 00:52:06 Nope, nope. I'm not standing for this. My Chipotle order is as follows. Lay it on me. I get the bull. Okay. Do I get rice? No, I don't get rice.
Starting point is 00:52:14 Okay. I don't know. Do I get beans? Yeah, I do. Black beans. Okay. All right. Racist.
Starting point is 00:52:18 What do I get on top of that? Some lettuce. what else do I get? I get them fahita onions and peppers that shit's good and healthy are fahita onions and peppers
Starting point is 00:52:29 healthy I'm asking they are they seem like they'd be really salty but are they salty and marinated and like pasta stuff no no no no no Kevin I'm just looking at you
Starting point is 00:52:39 because you could easily bring up the Chipotle you know health charts and give me the food you're totally good his average calories is about 6 to 700 calories
Starting point is 00:52:47 can they hear you yeah okay you're right there sorry Six to seven hundred calories. I get that grilled chicken. Good for you. Right?
Starting point is 00:52:55 Yeah. And then here's where I get a little crazy, Greg. Lay it on me. You get the quok? No. I get corn. Corn's the crazy thing that I do. I don't even get cheese on that motherfucker.
Starting point is 00:53:03 It blew my mind when Kevin and Nick were telling me corn is not good for you. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. Come on, man. I can't stand. I get corn syrup. I'm like corn. I just love corn.
Starting point is 00:53:14 Yeah. It's not good for you. God damn it. Anyway. I blame the Native Americans. Oh my God. because you understand the joke that they're made in their corn
Starting point is 00:53:23 they brought the corn to the fucking cornucopia and the pilgrims and shit and then we killed them all which was a bad move yeah exactly I don't know if I already said this one but 15 years ago on September 19 2002 Marvel versus Capcom 2 came out on PlayStation 2 and Xbox
Starting point is 00:53:36 now people at home might be saying but Tim that's not when it first came out on dreams Dreamcast and it probably are saying it in arcades like years before I understand that but as someone that didn't own a Dreamcast and I loved Marvel's Capcom One, I wanted this game more than anything. I played it in arcades all the time.
Starting point is 00:53:53 There was a round table near me. I'd just fucking go just a goddamn play this game. When I heard it's coming to consoles, like real consoles, consoles I owned, PlayStation 2. I was beyond stoked. Peor order that shit, got that shit. One of the rarest games I own to this day. You're happy with it?
Starting point is 00:54:08 Oh, I fucking loved it. I played the hell out of it. It was one of those CD ones, though, CDPS2 games. The bottom was blue. Yeah, like my Sims one. You've heard that story before, right? So I had, well, I loved the Sims. on PS2. Play a lot of it.
Starting point is 00:54:21 This isn't the story. I digress. I had a PS2, my launch PS2. Yeah. That in college broke-ish, where it couldn't play regular games. It could only play those blue bottomed ones. So, like a G, and a poor college kid, took it to the local pawn shop. Because I knew GameStop would try to catch me in the act.
Starting point is 00:54:44 Pawn shop, they're not going to be on top of it. Went there and brought the Sims and traded them both in. like, oh, let's see if it works. Plugged it and put the disc in close to it. Someone got a PS2. I mean, the way I justified it was that they brought it at home. It didn't work. They brought back to the pawn shop.
Starting point is 00:54:58 And we're like, hey, this doesn't work. And you like, look, Greg Miller. Yeah. That happened to me eventually with my PS2 when I got a war two came out. Yeah. And for some reason, that game required more spinning, more like the more disc usage. It's all the graphics. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:12 And it broke my PS2. Yeah. So I stole currents. Still have it. It's right there. It's blue, yeah. Blue. It's modded with one of those flip tops.
Starting point is 00:55:21 Nice. Yeah. I noticed the other day, Cool guy comes in here, you know, and plays Simpsons hit and run and stuff on it. There was a good, that was on for a good 16 hours in a row once.
Starting point is 00:55:30 It's like, I came in in the morning and it was still humming over there. I was like, huh, you're still kicking up. PS2 hum is such a beautiful sound. Like, I've told this story before on the show.
Starting point is 00:55:40 Sure. But, uh, Gia, the last place she lived in San Francisco, she had this roommate named Avi. And he is this, He's fancy.
Starting point is 00:55:48 He's in a band. So he was never home. And one time I come home and it was just me there. Gia wasn't even there yet. And I just hear a sound. I was like, man, that really sounds like a PS2.
Starting point is 00:55:59 That doesn't make any sense. Yeah. Eventually, Gia comes home and we're just chilling. She's making dinner. And I was like, is there a PS2 here? And she was like,
Starting point is 00:56:08 I don't know what you're talking about. I don't even know what I mean. I was like a PlayStation 2. Is there one in this house? Yeah. She's like, I don't know. Avi might have one.
Starting point is 00:56:15 Why? I hear it. And it's on. Yeah. She was like, huh. So we went and go, look, lo and fucking behold, there's a PS2 randomly on
Starting point is 00:56:23 that he accidentally left on because he was watching a DVD of the Fast and the Furious. So I respected that. Was the TV on as well? TV was off. Did you turn it on? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:56:33 Okay. Just to see what was that. Because it would be my nightmare, right, that I leave my apartment with my system running and I'm like in a save state or something.
Starting point is 00:56:40 Are you kidding me? Just making sure. I know respect. But she is in there with a wine glass. I don't know what's happening. She wouldn't fucking know what's going on. She would know how to turn that thing off if she tried.
Starting point is 00:56:47 Good point. Good point. I just love the fact that I heard a hum and I knew it was a PS2. Yeah. So God bless that sound. I don't wish that, you know, because you know how I am. I don't like clutter and grant that I have some clutter, but I don't like clutter. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:56:59 I don't wish I had every one of my old consoles or anything like that. And I don't want to go out and buy them and turn them back on and da da da, but there are those moments of like, I wish I could relive of like powering on the PS2 for the first time. Like we're driving it home from school in the blue box that I put a seatbelt around in the passenger seats and getting it there. and unpacking it and putting it on, like that and hearing that and like the intro logo and then, yeah, yeah. So much weird ass shit. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:25 Yeah, I think I still own all of my original consoles with the exception of my game. Oh, no, I do have my Game Boy Pocket. With the exception of the Sega Genesis. Yeah. The PlayStation 1, I sadly traded in like, dumb ass. But it was like, oh, the PS2 also. Backers and Battles and everything.
Starting point is 00:57:46 really don't need it. But yeah, I have every other system. Yeah, I think if it was one of those things, I don't think, you know, I don't know if I, what, how much I knew of my life, but I don't think I was ever thinking like, I'm going to always be in one place. If I had that kind of vision and was ever going to leave the Midwest, maybe I would have kept more on my shit. You know what I mean? There's definitely crap all packed up my dad's attic, but mostly video games, no, because I kept that and traded the cycle so much and stuff like that. Also, it's my favorite thing where my brother just randomly brings on my old shit here. Yeah. It's all like, look over at his desk and it's just like my GBA SP is there. Yeah. Yeah. I love that.
Starting point is 00:58:16 that thing. Yeah, I'd love, I mean, I'd love to go home not for like 48 hours and go up into the attic and find like all my Ninja Turtle toys. Yeah, my real Ghostbusters and stuff like that. And my, my, my master system, master system and game collection is still up there somewhere. Seeing the shit that Greg Miller would find in his attic. That's a, that's a video. It scares me. We should go home with something. You should come. We should come. We should go home one. Kevin, you can just come. We'll bring the camera, you and me. We'll go up there. You'll see my dad's bottle collection. Because big old Greg Miller, crane operator number one, he'd, he'd, we'll, loves him some antique bottles. But I was disheartened a little bit the yesterday, two days ago. Uh-huh. Because PlayStation sent us more PlayStation fours here. What up FTC? So we could do like the Friday of 13th, let's plays and just have more on you hand, right? Because right now in the office, we have two PS4s.
Starting point is 00:59:04 And when we want to do stuff like Joey's had to bring it hers and Andy has to bring it his and it's like, well, what if we want to do a fire team? What if we want to do something else? It was weird to unpack these PS4s the other day and have it be so. normal. You know what I mean? Of like I, there was no like, oh, wow, I'm excited. It was like, I am unpacking toilet paper and putting it out of the show. Like, this is like here to get the job done. And it was like, oh, because even, do you ever think, think about this? Because once in a while I do where, whether it be your, my phone, my PlayStation 4 at home, anything,
Starting point is 00:59:35 of like, even though it'll never be the excitement of when we're kids and like waiting for the PlayStation 2 and having the magazines and reading them cover to cover shit. Even at the PlayStation 4 launch event when they when I got what would become mine because again if you're not familiar just make sure I like to say this just for ethics wise PlayStation 4 IG and sent me to the launch event out in New York where they gave us all PlayStation 4s that what I then took that one got it engraved then the one I had bought off Amazon and came to IGN gave to IGN and kept that one so technically I paid for the PlayStation 4 I have even though PlayStation gave to me at the time just like to put that out there for some reason anyways so I fucking fan boy
Starting point is 01:00:14 but like getting it there and taking back to the hotel room and un-unpacking it and like you're so stoked and you're so gentle with this the same way I was with my PS3 that I bought, my PS2, my PS-1, like every console you've ever had. And then it just becomes fucking part. Like my iPhone, how much I lusted after this giant phone to finally get it at launch and like lust it after it. And now it's like me and Joe, you're having a conversation. We heard something fall in the other room.
Starting point is 01:00:40 It was my phone that I had left here and somebody called me and it fell. And I'm like, oh, whatever. fucking things dinged up. It's just like, I love that moment when electronics are brand new and means so much to you. And you get the PlayStation. I remember getting the PlayStation 4. I'm going to talk like the PlayStation 4. It's like the PS2 now. Getting the PlayStation 4, right, and being like, we can Twitch stream. Or I can, it was me at the time, just me. I can Twitch stream whatever I want. I'm going to stream every game with the PlayStation I and da da da da da da da da. And I haven't done that in fucking months because we moved to a real setup and then it's like also I just want to go home and
Starting point is 01:01:11 turn off and play a game. Yeah. I'm still that way. See, I think what part of the- Everything I open. It sucks. I love it, everything he fucking opens.
Starting point is 01:01:20 I think, I feel like I'm getting closer and closer to just buying a PlayStation 4-Pro. Because that goddamn 20th anniversary when I have it home fucking beeps non-stop. I got to take the screwdriver and fucking tighten it so it doesn't do that. And I'm like,
Starting point is 01:01:35 I hate you. And this is a great excuse for me to fucking put you on a display shelf. You're right there with your 20th anniversary controller and then go buy a pro. And I feel like a pro. I might unbox the same way. You feel like this is cool.
Starting point is 01:01:47 This is like this. Well, you need a 4K TV. It's just those new controllers. I'm sorry. Kevin, you said I need a 4K TV if I get a pro? Yeah. Well, if Kevin says so,
Starting point is 01:01:53 all right, babe, Jen, we got to buy a fucking 4K TV too. That was the other thing too. LOD C6. So the update that's not a destiny thing. This is more of just a video game life update, right? Is that I got Jen to play destiny with me all weekend long,
Starting point is 01:02:05 which was great. And I love her so goddamn much. She has feelings on the game. She can come in and review it on herself and I've talked about it. But she then also finally broke down that I got to bring the second TV into the living room. I saw that. So we could sit there on the couch and canoodle while we play it.
Starting point is 01:02:18 And it's like them side by side. I'm like, oh man, this is ugly, right? We should probably get matching TVs or just get two brand new. Cause it's like, I have this old like,
Starting point is 01:02:29 it's great. I saw. Yeah. Well, don't talk shit about that plasma TV. I love it. My problem is it's like, oh,
Starting point is 01:02:35 it's beautiful, but I'm with you. I'm like, oh, this doesn't look good. And it's that thing of like, she beat Destiny's story yesterday. She was already level 20
Starting point is 01:02:43 because she just kept playing. And I, she's, I don't know if she's in it for the long haul. So then it's like, well, are we leaving the second TV out here? We're going to get rid of it. We should get a bigger entertainment center for going to do that. We get matching entertainment centers put them side by the side. Yeah. We'll see.
Starting point is 01:02:58 But I was really, really shocked last night because we had Paul and Kevin over for dinner, personal friends wise, just name dropping. And I thought when I came home from work, that would be top of her list of. Cool. Let's move the second TV out of here and move it and never got mentioned. I was like, oh, yeah. This is your life now. this is your life.
Starting point is 01:03:14 Gia's super jealous of that. She's like, I wish we could do cool things like this. Why can't you? I don't know. She doesn't play. That's something. I'm like,
Starting point is 01:03:21 oh, I think you just meant two TVs. So like she could watch whatever she wants to watch and you could play Crash Panachevus for the 15th time. We have two TVs. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:03:30 Too good. Oh, she's just jealous of the fact that me and my wife like video games. What did you say? No, nothing. Kevin said nothing.
Starting point is 01:03:36 But, but yeah, no. Okay. Get her into a game. Yeah, that's the problem. Marvel.
Starting point is 01:03:41 Heroes. Omega. I don't know about that. She could be Spider-Gwen. Yeah, she's been, she watched me play Destiny for 13 minutes before falling asleep. So she's making for that.
Starting point is 01:03:50 Before she fell asleep. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Continuing with. Destiny just knocks you all that. 15 years ago on September 23rd, 2002,
Starting point is 01:03:58 Star Fox Adventures came out on GameCube. That was the rare developed one. The formerly dinosaur planets on the Nintendo 64 that got canceled, turned into this. It was the Z. Zelda-like game where you were Star Fox.
Starting point is 01:04:14 And it was not good. No, it was great. It was fantastic. It just wasn't a Star Fox game. But it did have certain levels that were Star Fox. But they looked really pretty. And it's what I always fantasize about a GameCube Star Fox game being. Except it didn't have the little, the crosshairs of where you're blasting.
Starting point is 01:04:34 So it was like, it's kind of hard to understand what's going on. Very interesting game. It's one of those weird things where I'm like, I can't believe that happened. But it did. It's weird. Cool. Yeah. GameCube's another one.
Starting point is 01:04:45 I wish I had my original GameCube. And again, I don't wish I really had this stuff, but I wish I could time travel to when I was out at a bar or something as a 20-something. And I was able to go into my old room and like look at all this shit and hold all this shit. It's been like, I just order today. A little handle. I ordered today for the first time ever and a customized Xbox One controller. Oh, really? A little Xbox ID is that what I call?
Starting point is 01:05:08 This Nike ID. No, it's something like that. The custom Xbox controller? Yeah, design lab. What'd you do? I went around the block. So to be frank about this, I came in today, found on my desk a little post-in note from Joey Noel that said, I forgot to give this to you from Jeff at the Xbox event, Jeff
Starting point is 01:05:25 Rubenstein. They did the Xbox event a couple weeks ago. I still don't think they could talk about. And I couldn't go because of a whole bunch of shit that happened here with like content-wise. And I guess they gave out these little cards. They were like, hey, design your controller for free. I was like, oh, cool. Went on there.
Starting point is 01:05:41 and my first reaction of course is, boom, let's make a Muzoo controller. They only got yellow. So I build out this controller and it looks like Hawkeye, like Iowa Hawkeyes, black and yellow.
Starting point is 01:05:50 And I'm like, we're black and gold. That's not the same thing. Yeah. I'm out. I'll make a kind of funny controller. Go in there, do the powder blue shell.
Starting point is 01:05:58 Then I'm going with like white things up here, white triggers and all that stuff, white buttons. And it's like, it doesn't look right. It doesn't look kind of funny enough. I'll go in and I'll do pink. So I did the blue shit,
Starting point is 01:06:10 Potter blue shell started doing the pink stuff. I'm like, this looks like Andy's controller. And on top of that, the actual face buttons, you can't customize their exact color. You have multiple options of like black, solid black, white. Like there's things in there, but like you can't do it up pink. I'm like, I doesn't cry. Ended up going.
Starting point is 01:06:28 And then I tried to do Superman for a while because I went like, you know, okay, cool, it's going to be navy blue. I'll put some red up here because you can do the backplate too and stuff like that. Didn't look the way I wanted to. So what I did is a full on royal blue control. and then all the whites and all the buttons and all the sticks and all the bumpers and stuff white. And then I engraved it at Game Over Grigie. Hell yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:48 Yeah. So I'm looking forward to getting that. My problem with the Xbox design lab is that it's not PlayStation Design Lab. That is a huge problem. But it's also that it's the normal controller, not the elite. Oh. And it's just knowing there's an elite makes me want the elite. Sure.
Starting point is 01:07:03 It's a problem. Yeah. You know. Oh, I mean, these are all first for problems. Yeah. Because this is literally my thing is like, don't get me wrong. I can't wait to play. player unknown battleground on Xbox one.
Starting point is 01:07:12 I'll fuck around with Cuphead even though does not look like a game for Greg Miller. Oh my God. Cuphead. Close. Like five days away. Yeah. Holy shit.
Starting point is 01:07:20 But it was like that thing of like, all right cool. This controller is awesome. It harkens back, of course, to the first colored controller I ever had. That was my controller, my N64 fucking Royal Blue. That was my boy that I carried with me to Michael Bryant house and Jason Neuars. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 01:07:33 But I'm like, how many times a year I'm going to use this thing? It's like, God, why can't I do this with a fucking PlayStation controller? That's my problem where I'm like, I can't do the IDs or not ID stuff. The design lab stuff. I just don't play enough Xbox where I can't justify this.
Starting point is 01:07:45 My joy cons, I'm just set, man. Like, I got my blue day one. They're like, Tim, here's the one day that you fucking want. I look at that thing every day. And I'm just like, oh my God, I love this. But then PlayStation, I've always had these where I'm like, oh, there's no color that calls to me.
Starting point is 01:07:59 But yesterday I told you. I was like, man. We had an awesome thing where it's like, on Games Daily month ago, whatever it was, where they announced they were bringing back the crystal. controllers that were, you know, see through white, see through red, see through blue. And you and I did a whole game's daily section of it about it. And some kid wrote in, he's like, I love hearing you guys nerd out like school girls about this color thing. Fucking colored controllers. And it was
Starting point is 01:08:23 that thing. We were both on the tipping point. We both talked to ourselves out of it. And then you hit me up yesterday. So the thing is, hold on. Hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Sorry, Tim is stepping away from the microphone if you're an audio listener. I was drinking some of my beer. So here he comes back. See, with a legacy like that, you've got to buy it. So here's the thing. Tim's brought over his. The reason I got up, the point I'm about to make is absolutely wrong, unfortunately. But here's the thing.
Starting point is 01:08:50 My brother to play Simpsons hit and run had to get some PS2 controllers. Obviously, PS2 controllers, not wireless. So this is some third party bullshit. Sure. It's not the proper dual shock too. Yeah. And so it negates my point, which was the PS2 original crystal ones that had much darker blue. It was more of a royal blue.
Starting point is 01:09:09 Yeah. This is the color. This is kind of funny blue. And this is the same color as the new place. It should form one. So I'm very excited about that. And I was like, I don't know if I'm going to do it.
Starting point is 01:09:18 And then I saw it. I'm like, I got to do it. So I bought one yesterday. I have to. I know it's a knockoff, but it still feels so right. Yeah. It still feels like that dual shock.
Starting point is 01:09:28 The knockup, though, is based off the same mold. Yeah, yeah, yeah. These lips on the end here. Fuck, dude. Yeah. It's just so funny because I do do that thing where you think about, about it and you hold dual shock four or whatever and even dual shock three and it's like oh yeah like
Starting point is 01:09:43 they haven't changed that much and then if you go back and hold a piece one original controller let alone a dual shock or now a dual shock two ish one i love the dual shock four oh my god so damn much i mean of course the only thing is like fuck this touchpad whatever i mean i i know but it's just like it's for me the touchpad is such a gen one move of like we think we think we think we're going to make this interesting. We think we have a shot at this and it didn't work out. And it's kind of like Vita with all of its back touch and front touch and bullshit. And it's like, don't wrong. It doesn't ruin the controller. But really, when they're, when they come around for PlayStation 5, whatever the fuck it is, I really hope they go back and
Starting point is 01:10:23 they're like, it's a solid piece of plastic. Your gamers game, game, game. We're all for gamers kind of shit. Because it's not that I hate the touchpad. It's just the thing of like, so few games use it in any interesting way. It's funny you bring that up because I don't even look at it as a touchpad. I just look it as a big button. Yeah. And in that case, I'm like, all right but that's the thing is I think this looks so much sexier without that big block of black in there and it's that thing where I just uh you know we just bought uh I had just bought controllers recently or something I don't know I when we started playing something on stream I was showing it on stream or whatever and Toasty Stickers Flaming Toast sent new kind of funny decals that have like the cut through them
Starting point is 01:10:59 because they're the now we're getting the dual shock fours that have that line of light in the Which I love. Well it's funny on a beautiful blue controller sure. I love. I love. I love love it too now. Uh, it's funny though. Anyways, they sent the thing and like the sticker I put on. I was like, oh, finally. And I was like, oh, this doesn't look right either. It was like, oh, this isn't, this color doesn't match the blue and yada, yada, yada, yeah, yeah. Not that I'm putting down them. It was a gift they sent us. So it's great. I have all my other controllers decked out with it, but I digress. I was playing uncharted, uh, golden abyss, right? No, uncharted lost legacy. And when we were playing for review and I got the, you know,
Starting point is 01:11:32 the thing I was telling you about the, uh, uh, bracelet that glows when you're near, item or near treasure. Yeah, yeah, yeah, of course. Sorry, my apologies. And it never dawned on me that I was using one of my OG dual shock force because I was playing it and like the best, so it glows and makes noise or rumbles when you're near a treasure, right? And then your light bar changes colors like hot or cold as you get closer and farther
Starting point is 01:11:55 way. And I'm like, wow, how fucking rad is it that lost legacy is finally making me care about the light bar? Totally forgetting that because like I'm doing it and I feel a rumble and I would do this. Like look, look at this. screen and look at the bar and not realizing of course if I wasn't a moron and plugged in the new controller I see a bar right there and never have to oh sorry if you're at home I'm angling the light bar in my face while I play we're
Starting point is 01:12:17 not realizing it would be right there interesting but that's like one of those cool things that's like a little bit cooler because of the new controller versus the old yeah I'm gonna go get the new control because it's sexy I want show it off okay cool you're gonna get your yo do the new dual shock force all right don't we have some of Kevin's desk I thought my blue ones are over there oh you don't want that one you want something different oh you're getting the ones that came the Uncharted. So when we got these things sent from PlayStation over, hey, FTC, for us to do more stuff at the office with PlayStation's,
Starting point is 01:12:44 because I know you have all said, kind of funny, you guys are great, but you are hurting for PlayStation coverage. They sent over the Uncharted Four, a special edition of PlayStation 4s. So they're that like, I don't know you call it. Nah, I would say like blueberry, but even that's too dark. It's not powder blue. It's not royal blue, but it's that metallic blue. Metallic blue is what I say. Gray blue. And they came with those controllers too
Starting point is 01:13:09 And those controllers are pretty goddamn sick I'm gonna start carrying that one around too Also I don't know if you've noticed Or how much have you used this the PlayStation? The PlayStation just 513th I'm interested and I have no way of proving it But I feel like that PlayStation While brand new and not carrying as much baggage
Starting point is 01:13:27 Is running way better than the PlayStation 4 as I have With the PlayStation 4 as I have in terms of Both at home 20th anniversary and then launch which I guess would make sense that they probably updated some component in there. But they seem to just be running faster, which then makes me wonder about getting that pro. But then again,
Starting point is 01:13:44 I got a wife who doesn't have a job. I think it's working faster? I think so. Hmm. I mean, yours might be old, I think that's probably the main part too. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:13:51 Because, yeah. I don't know. I mean, I have the pro at home and it is super fast. And that's the thing is, I use the pro in here in the office all the time. Hmm.
Starting point is 01:14:01 I just feel like it's running better than, and again, my PlayStation's are old shit. They also like jet engines. They also get used probably more the most PlayStation's in the world. I mean, this one sounds like a goddamn jet engine, the one here. The PlayStation, the one we just got.
Starting point is 01:14:12 Just got. Really? Oh, wow. Well, I guess I haven't used it that much. Yeah, but that's the one I'm going to bring to let's play in the game's case. Hmm. Because, yeah, when I was playing Friday 13th, it was like, humming like a motherfucker. But I want to give a shout out to this controller.
Starting point is 01:14:24 Yeah. How would you describe that blue? Uh, old original kind of funny logo blue. So where it's like that. Very, very. What? Like specific. It is just to our audience.
Starting point is 01:14:36 Hey, I'm pretty sure. Here's the thing. Crayola has markers that are original kind of funny blue. When you're talking about blue and you ask me like how would I describe it, I'll tell you how I'll describe it. I said metallic blue. I said grayish blue. Well, metallic blue is hard because I see where you're going with it.
Starting point is 01:14:51 But metallic blue also like the color of my car, I would say is metallic. No way. What? Yours is like a bright metallic blue. Sure. Metallic implies a sheen to it. I think like brushed metal. But see, that's what I'm saying.
Starting point is 01:15:05 I guess like I see where you're coming from. from with it. But no, if you look at the original kind of funny smiley that I was super upset that Nick used the wrong blue. It's that color blue. But what I really like about it is turning around. It's dual-toned. Oh, yeah. The black is black on the back. And it looks super nice because little nubs at the bottom. Oh, also black? Yeah, yeah. Like, you see around there? See a whole one. Man, love this thing. It's so cool. I can't wait to play it with my new crystal. What are you doing here? Oh, you're getting your royal blue one. The royal blue ones are so sexy. My least favorite color blue.
Starting point is 01:15:38 Fuck you. Really? You're gonna hate my Xbox controller then. No, the thing I, that I, this is one of the new ones with the light bar at the top, right? Mm-hmm. Yeah? Yeah, don't turn on. I'm turning it on.
Starting point is 01:15:49 Yeah, there it is. Just make sure I got it. Like, I have these ones that we have in the office, because I finally broke down the bottom, because we were using my old, original black ones here that had the thumbsticks falling off. I bought these ones. I was like, great. And I didn't notice, at home, what I do is, like, I have two PS4 is running to keep it set up. easy the my launch black unit that's engraved has the blue controllers because i love blue too
Starting point is 01:16:12 and then the in the bedroom one has or the 20th anniversary has the red ones however i had originally bought a blue one right right away because i was like i want a blue one and then i was like all right i'm doing this breakup and i'm sending my black ones here i need to get more controllers i bought the new uh blue ones here didn't realize that they changed them because the ones i have at home, right, are this blue, but then they have this black back. And then these ones are just blue with then a little bit darker blue there. Yeah, it's two different color blues. Yeah. I like this better personally. But then again, I'd like it even more if it was all just the same color. Yeah. Isn't that kind of guy? The, uh, the crystal blue one I got is also dual tone blues where there's
Starting point is 01:16:50 two blues. One's bright on the top and then the dark on the bottom. What a great fucking controller though, for real. Isn't it? And the deep hat is so good. Playing Sonic Mania. I want to do a shock four, but it feels fucking right. Yeah. Feels so good. Love the big buttons. You know what else I can't fucking believe? Is that we want to talk about, and we've said it a million times on Games Daily, we've talked about on this show as well, right? Xbox One has come so far.
Starting point is 01:17:14 I'm not trying to take a shot at the Xbox. I can't believe that they didn't ship with a rechargeable controller. I can't believe that they haven't made their now standard controller rechargeable. The fact that it is still that, it is still by the playing charge kit. It's like, what a weird thing where it's like,
Starting point is 01:17:30 I take it so for granted it that this is going to be a rechargeable. This is how it's going to work based on the fact of course that PlayStation 3 were that way. Like I feel like that generation, especially being a year out before the PlayStation 3, okay, we fuck this up. We weren't there for controller tech.
Starting point is 01:17:45 But to be there now, it's such a weird move. It is very weird. And the thing is too with the PlayStation 4 is like, why do these things die so fast? Black bar? And like, why do they not keep a charge even if they're not being used?
Starting point is 01:17:57 Like, I've found that every time, if I don't play my PlayStation 4 for like three weeks or whatever, Wow, I've never had that. So I can't tell you. It's haven't attached for me when it's Nintendo season. But, uh, which has been recently a lot. And I'm really excited about that.
Starting point is 01:18:10 Uh, but like when I pick up the controller, it's like, it's just dead. I'm like, fuck, I need to plug it in. It's like, this was fully charged. Like, why would? For me, it's that thing where it's like I, it's like still such a weird video game nerd thing of like a badge of honor of like playing destiny where it's like, I have the game's chargers for the controllers and I have two in there at all time. So it's like, Jen and I was playing this weekend. It would be like, all right. we take a break finally after hours.
Starting point is 01:18:33 It would be like pot like you're like putting like you know taking the gun and put him back in the holster and like pop it back down and put fresh charge once back out. I was like this is there is something cool about that. Yeah. But there's also something just very inconvenient. Oh super annoying. Yeah. Especially because the Nintendo Switch pro controller which I haven't been using too much because I hold charge forever.
Starting point is 01:18:52 I prefer to play my switch games on the in handheld mode. Typically. Yep. Is the. Kevin says. We're big handheld mode. fancy um but then i plugged that thing in for the first time recently because now i'm playing through sonic media on the switch and trying 100% it there and i'm just like this thing still has
Starting point is 01:19:12 charge like i haven't used it since zolda i feel like the ps3 controller i held charge for so long right now i use my pc three all the time as my like netflix device yeah still holds are you using a dual shock or a six axis a dual shock really i do six axis that thing would last for everything It's because it was just fucking made of air. It was garbage. I hated it. God, I hated that thing. Hated it so much.
Starting point is 01:19:36 It was so embarrassing. Yeah. The fucking embarrassment of a launch that fucking having it. I understand. No, legal shit, though. The one thing I'll compliment now. I want to go the other way with Xbox versus PlayStation controllers. I know it's a stupid thing.
Starting point is 01:19:49 I know it also doesn't make any sense. I appreciate that when you pop off to put batteries in, it says hello from Seattle in there. I didn't notice that. Oh, really? No. Cool, Greg. Do you know what Xbox One controller looks like? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:20:00 Can you grab me one? when you pop off the back thing, there's a little message inside that says, hello from Seattle. It also says made in China, which is then like, well, well,
Starting point is 01:20:09 like, well, I don't know. That's exactly what we needed. But yeah, that's so funny. Hey, also,
Starting point is 01:20:13 shout out to the Xbox One controller. It's great. I love holding it. Oh, yeah, Xbox one controller is great. That's fun, yeah. Yeah,
Starting point is 01:20:20 and that's the thing is like, I feel like the division between people who are like, oh my God, I love the dual shock. Oh my God. I love the Xbox. Or Xbox one controller.
Starting point is 01:20:30 Xbox controller because they've just been so standard too is the fact of what you grew up on or what you're comfortable with right in the fact that like I don't be wrong I think the Xbox one controller is great too but I do fucking love a dual shock but again I've been playing how many years straight of dual shock I will always prefer the dual shock design because I prefer games that focus on the D pad typically platform. Ah yeah yeah and things like they fucked that up at 360 so bad the prominent placing of the D pad I'm like super down for but it's funny looking at the 360 versus PS3 it's like the dual shock three like the button design sucked give me cheers before you go come me come me cool Greg there you go that was my boy that's my boy you know what cool Greg and I operate on a different wavelength than you it's true all right he didn't get it but cool Greg and I are all off there we're talking about how cool Mario is you're talking about how fucking this odyssey is garbage that's what you said Kevin title it that yep I hate you so much 17 years ago on September 20th 2000 Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 came out on PlayStation
Starting point is 01:21:29 what I don't understand are there just no games that ever resonate with me that are on the thing? Because it's just all your history dates are always things that you care about a lot. Okay. First off, yeah, I make the list. Where do you find this? Can I give you some shout out and things? Game facts.
Starting point is 01:21:44 Game facts has a this day in gaming section. And I just look at the week and then I go through that week. How is the game facts community doing? Still a lot of people over there? Oh yeah. Yeah. And this wasn't a slight. I just don't know.
Starting point is 01:21:55 I haven't been a regular person in years. I go on game facts all the time. Neo Gaff is my like new home. Sure. I mean, when I say new, I mean, the last 10 years. But like, GameVex is special, man. Especially for their like non-gaming boards. I'm a big fan of those.
Starting point is 01:22:09 They're rapping hip-hop board. Still kicking. Still kicking. Still kicking. Still kicking. Mm-hmm. Yeah, no, Tonya's Procedator 2. That wasn't just a me thing.
Starting point is 01:22:17 That was a phenomenon. Specifically that one. 10 out of 10. IGM.com. 10. 10. 10. 10.
Starting point is 01:22:22 EGM magazine. Whoa. Yeah. No, it's a big deal. What, Greg? That's our least favorite. It is our least favorite, though. That's the thing.
Starting point is 01:22:28 Tony Hose Pro Skater 2? I love it. But it's like when you really look at all of them, not my face. Thug 2 was the best one. Thug was the best one. Thug 2. Tony Hux Pro Skater 4 is the best one.
Starting point is 01:22:41 It is definitive. You can't even get off your skateboard. Yeah, you can't get off your skateboard. Don't need that gimmicky bullshit. T. HPS4 was the last game in the franchise to add a function that was actually conducive to the gameplay, the arcade style gameplay that the game was. The moment you can get off. the board. It slowed things down. Didn't work out
Starting point is 01:23:00 and thug two. But Tonyiose Prochated four added the spine transfer. Three added the revert. Two added the manual. Those are all very key. Very key. Ford did add some bullshit like skittin. When you can grab onto the back of a car. That was stupid. Whatever. That was fucking back to the future. Yeah,
Starting point is 01:23:16 but it was unnecessary for the gameplay. I'm trying to see if I can log into my old game fax account. You probably could. I'm trying. That's what we're trying to do. But no, the thing is I try to choose games that I think that you'd have something to say more about. I thought you'd have something to say about Def Jam.
Starting point is 01:23:33 Fight from New York. I don't know if you know this. I liked alternative music. I always. So like I don't, I don't Def Jam. I really. Sony guy,
Starting point is 01:23:40 but I guess like I always try to choose those obscure. Anytime there's a PS3 game that I'm like, like the moment mag has an anniversary, it's going to be here. All right. Greg. The team killing video that got the internet so mad. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:23:51 All right. 20 years ago, this is a great one. Better be. I think. 20 years ago on September 18th, 1997. Odd World.
Starting point is 01:23:58 Abe's Odyssey came out on PlayStation. I mean, we love Lauren Laining for sure. Yeah. But Oddworld at the time, when that first launched, I remember it was on the back of every comic book. And I was like, what is this thing? It scared me. With this weird mutant.
Starting point is 01:24:09 I don't want to play this. Kevin's uncle had it. And I didn't like watching him play it. Yeah. It scared me. Sure. I understand that. And now Lauren Langing, one of our best friends.
Starting point is 01:24:16 I love him a lot. He's a great dude. We should get him back on the show soon. What did you say, Kev? Amazing. He's leaning away from my phone. Near, near, near, near. Near, near.
Starting point is 01:24:25 Oh, they made that Sarah. Come here. Come here. Come here. Yeah. Over there. I don't like it. Bothers me.
Starting point is 01:24:31 And then finally, 21 years ago on September 21st, is definitely not one for you. But it's not one for me either. 1996. Kirby's superstar came out on the Super Nintendo. And I just want to say, best Kirby game I ever played.
Starting point is 01:24:44 Definitely. Okay. However, I don't understand the hype for Kirby. Why? He's adorable. Yeah, but like the games are so not good.
Starting point is 01:24:51 That's what people love. God. They love when he sucks things. He cuts to the one, Kev. Cut to Greg's one. Sucks it all in. That's what Curry does, man. I've been thinking this Halloween is going as Kirby. Oh my God.
Starting point is 01:25:03 Somebody please tweet at me and let me know what's so special about Kirby. Like, why do you like Kirby? Especially as a Nintendo franchise. He looks like bubble gum. That's cool. But I'm on top of the games. Like I feel like the games are just lacking. People really like bubble gum.
Starting point is 01:25:15 People really like bubble gum. Big bubble gum fans. I get that. Remember we used to get the ice cream pops with bubble gum and the eyeballs? Fuck off. Why didn't anyone do this? This is stupid. That gum was so bad.
Starting point is 01:25:25 Yeah, exactly. It's like baseball card gum. No, thank you. All right. now it's time for audience questions. Now here's the thing, Greg. Lay it on me. I'm going to lay it on.
Starting point is 01:25:34 Lay it on me, man. Before the show, we talked about this. Someone tweeted me and was like, oh, there's been a couple weeks that you guys haven't done audience questions. Yeah. So maybe one time you should do topic of the show, being audience questions and do more.
Starting point is 01:25:45 And I was like, oh, cool, we'll do it this week to like make up. But we're now like super far into the show. We talked a lot about things we played and gaming history. Hey, man. Went off on a whole tangent about control. When the show is great, the show is great. The show is great. I felt good about it.
Starting point is 01:25:55 It's been a great episode. We're only going to do a couple of these, and I'll save the rest for later. You can go to kind of funny.com slash gamescast to leave your topics, just like a whole bunch of these people did. Jake E.J says, with Squares saying that they're going forward, that going forward, multiplayer is now prominent over single player. And they're focusing on games. Did they say that? Today. Holy shit.
Starting point is 01:26:12 After Games Daily. I missed this. I didn't see this. Tomorrow. And they're focusing on games as a service. What does this mean for their future? So, yeah, there's a big statement of them talking about how they, they see the importance of games as a service. Okay.
Starting point is 01:26:26 Do they define what? that means to them. There was a, there was like a long, like two-bar paragraph thing, but going through this, what you're gonna, you want to read all this.
Starting point is 01:26:34 It's definitely a games daily thing. I'm not gonna sound off before I know what's happening. All right, fine. Is it gonna be on IGN.com front page story? Uh,
Starting point is 01:26:40 it should be. Or is it gonna be fucking Darren Brazil farting on a stair drum again? What? How drunk are you, I'm not that drunk. It was a reference to airheads and how much I hate Darren Brazil.
Starting point is 01:26:51 What the fuck airheads? Remember airheads? Brendan Fraser, uh, Steve Bouchemi, Adam Sandler. I thought you're talking about war. It's just pip smart farting on a snake.
Starting point is 01:27:00 I can't say it, but got it, got it. Maybe I am starting to make sense. Um, I think that it's going to be interesting. Final Fantasy 14 has been such a huge success. Sure for Square. That square annex that I can, people know, I can see them, uh, trying to double down on that type of thing. However, fun fantasy 15 was also a huge success for them, despite it's very tumultuous dev cycle and the amount of money having to be.
Starting point is 01:27:27 put into that game. So I don't ever see them fully giving up on the single player games, uh, especially in the, the smaller state when it comes to things like project talk to path, the traveler. Yeah, hell yeah.
Starting point is 01:27:37 And the bradley defaults and all those type of things because they understand lost fear. Like they know that there's a, a home and audience for what are now known as smaller titles. But I also see them having a space in the AAA arena with single player games that they'll never truly give up on. Um, think near is an example, but I could also see them turning near into a, a multiplayer game
Starting point is 01:28:01 in a different way. It'll be a different genre, a different style of game, but like taking a franchise that works and that they've seen success with and going by turning it in something new. So shout out to US gamer and PlayStation Universe. I went to IGN.com. I couldn't find this story. US gamer though, however, thumbs down to you because I clicked on it and it's just like, this is brokenly can't work. And this is off Google. So we'll go to PlayStation Universe. Try to get some here. PSU. PlayStation Universe is Alex Co. says Squarinix focusing on multiplayer over single player games. Squarionix just released the company's annual report via NeoGath.
Starting point is 01:28:35 Sorry? Nothing. Then shut up. While there's a lot of chess thumping in acknowledgement that Final Fantasy 15 did very, very well financially, as did near automata, the future for the publisher might be veering in a direction most people aren't familiar with. In Squarinx report, the publisher mentions the multiplayer games have taken the lead over single player games and that the company will endeavor to develop titles that won't fully. be played just once.
Starting point is 01:28:58 Here's the quote. Games as a service is a concept that is often mentioned recently in HD game context. Gone are the days in which single player games were of primary status and multiplayer games were secondary. Lately, multiplayer games have taken the lead and it is standard for games to be designed for long-term play. The term is multiplayer in games as a service themselves have existed for some time, but they are now being used in reference to game designs that place a strong emphasis on
Starting point is 01:29:25 a longer-term user engagement. We will also endeavor to develop games designed not to be played once after launch, but that customers can enjoy more and play longer. In so doing will increase customer satisfaction enhancement. Okay. So it's not, hmm, this is a tough one. It is tough because does that not describe Final Fantasy 15 to an extent with its DLC road? I would go and argue, I mean, I think what they're saying right there describes near automata as well.
Starting point is 01:29:54 Where it is near, you need to play three times to be. beat and then they put out DLC of like, hey, fight the Square Anax CEO. And I, like, as somebody who's played it, I think that's awesome. I think NIR's different though, because near just, you have to play it multiple times to get all the endings, but that is still a very traditional single player experience. It's traditional, but they're supporting it after the fact.
Starting point is 01:30:12 I think Final Fantasy 15 is traditional, but they're supporting it after the fact. Yeah, but Final Fantasy is more substantial than the Near DLC stuff. Sure, but. That's still more like weird gimmicky shit, whereas Final Fantasy is more like, this is more actual Final Fantasy. 15 content. Sure. That's true.
Starting point is 01:30:28 Okay. I'll give you that. But yeah, I don't know. What's interesting is what's Tabata's next game? It'll be director of Final Fantasy 15. Final Fantasy 15 on Switch. Well, besides, once he's done with 15.
Starting point is 01:30:39 Final Fantasy 15 on Xbox 1X. Near done because PC's happening. Switch is all but confirmed at this point. And then Pocket Edition as well. But then they're talking about his next game is going to be a new IP on the next generation of systems. Like they're just getting ahead of it. Oh, did they say that?
Starting point is 01:30:55 I hear that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And it's like, what's that game? Getsuang games daily more. Oh, really?
Starting point is 01:31:00 What's that game going to be? And it's like, I can see this. And when you look at Final Fantasy 15, it's kind of obvious what type of game Tabata wants to make. And Fallon Fantasy 15 easily could have been a more multiplayer focused experience.
Starting point is 01:31:17 And I think that the new IP will be what this is talking about in what we expect from it. It will be a multiplayer game. So how multiplayer there? Are you talking, are you talking like it's going to be Guild Wars or is it destiny or is it? I don't know. I could see them using a Destiny style game as reference. Sure.
Starting point is 01:31:39 I think it'll be more that than Final Fantasy. Well, I mean, this is what I've talked about before on the thing is like it's interesting to look at Ubisoft, right? Where I think for years we said, oh, it's a Ubisoft game to describe what a game is and you know what it meant. Oh, it is a single player, open world, go collect all these things, do these things, clear out the towers. you jump off the towers, do whatever with the towers. And then there's been this quiet shift of, oh, it's a Ubisoft game.
Starting point is 01:32:02 Oh, do you mean it's the single player kind or it's the division? It's wild lands. It's, this goes on of like get into this world and we're going to do all these different things and keep you around. And I think, you know, wild lands and division have their flaws, but they found an audience. And I think I love division. So many people love wild lands.
Starting point is 01:32:19 And I really think that that was them getting in there and really seeing what that is. And now you'll see them expand on that. And those version two will be. so much better. But even Wash Dogs, too, right, was, hey, it's your single player thing, but we are bringing in other players and there can be co-op. There can be competitive in this and the other. And it wasn't, I understand what Square is talking about because Square is a company that
Starting point is 01:32:39 moves slowly. And the industry, honestly, you go back five or six years is very much. It's the original Tomb Raider reboot. Single player story, shitty ass multiplayer. That's what these, they don't meet ever. They exist in the same disc, though, you're buying or doubt. downloading or whatever, but they're not the same thing. Multiplayer is clearly redheaded stepchild, single players, we're putting into. And now we are in the section of like, how do you balance
Starting point is 01:33:03 that out and make it work, let alone just bring everybody in. Yeah. And I mean, we can sit here and lament that. And I don't know if the square games as service would speak to me, but I just did a whole rant an hour and a half ago about like how, you know, suddenly I'm into these games and services. And it is that thing. And I miss that and I want that. And I love being a part of the community. It's all so weird. Like to look at it and to go back. the question of Square. Like, what is Final Fantasy 16 going to be?
Starting point is 01:33:30 I had no fucking clue. Here's my question. As somebody who respects Square, respects Final Fantasy for sure, when do you just blow it up? I don't know. Hey, everybody. Here's Final Fantasy.
Starting point is 01:33:39 I think now it might be this. Like, I remember when Final Fantasy 10 was first being talked about, like post-announcement, but like, even pre-previews, just more like, here's what it's going to be.
Starting point is 01:33:53 Let's, you know, go forward with this. And they were already talking about 10, 11, 12 as like a, they had ideas and concepts for what it was. Because I remember when 11 being the first online, very different game. Yeah. A lot of people would argue not a final fantasy game. What's up? Your favorite one?
Starting point is 01:34:09 It's not my favorite. No. Nick thinks it is. Put it as the title. Tim's favorite final fantasy is what. But then to see them, whoa, look at that spider. What the fuck? We got a spider, Coogreg!
Starting point is 01:34:21 He doesn't fuck with spiders at all. He's right there. He's out. Oh, he's on the paper. He's so fast. Let him go. No. Look at him go.
Starting point is 01:34:31 He's stupid. We got him. Put him outside. Put him outside. He's right there. Oh, no. We need those questions back, though. Wow.
Starting point is 01:34:44 Damn. The disrespect. You know what I mean? So, fun story. My brother, deadly afraid of spiders. No fucking joke. Like, it is one of those things he used. Does not fuck with.
Starting point is 01:34:56 The spider was the smallest spider. just saw in my entire life. Yeah. And my brother was fucking out. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, my God. I thought he was coming in to jump and kill it.
Starting point is 01:35:04 No, no, no. He was fucking out. I just love your hair, dude. Come show, come show everybody. Come show everybody your hair, Colgray. No, we want it. But it's for the best friends, too. Cool, Greg, got his hair all crazy.
Starting point is 01:35:18 I like it. There it is. I need to get a haircut, too. There it is. There it is. We have at home a succulent that Jen planted. or whatever. And there's a spider who lives in it
Starting point is 01:35:30 that she calls Spider-Bro. He just chills out in there. He's super tiny. My brother's never coming to your house. You need me to come by or? But I know. So Final Fantasy 16 is interesting because I feel like this is the
Starting point is 01:35:41 first time in Final Fantasy history that we don't know about the next game when 15's out. Oh, okay. Like we've always had an idea of at least a couple projects ahead with Squarer. And we've seen their whole thing. We know how it's all hands on deck
Starting point is 01:35:57 for a king of heart. And there's kingdom hearts and this Fawn Fancy 7 remake. But it's like, it's weird that we don't know what 16 is. 15 was announced so long ago, especially if you think that. So do you think it's them learning or that they don't know? Do you think it's them taking lessons from 15 of like, let's not fucking announce this until we're a year out? Yeah. But like, what's crazy about 15 is it was 13.
Starting point is 01:36:18 2 for lack of a better name. So long ago. But then even Fawn Fancy 15 as it stands when it was formally announced was a long time ago. right and 14 had its rebirth and all that stuff. But it's like, it's just nuts to me that we still don't know what 16 is. And I think that this might be when they reset it. Holy reboot.
Starting point is 01:36:37 It's just, it's final fantasy. But I also don't know that they'd ever do that because there is such a lineage with that franchise being every game being its own thing. And I get that. But they saw so much success with 15 despite people talking shit about it and whatever. It sold super well. But I mean,
Starting point is 01:36:53 I don't think, but this is like, you know, this isn't a, hey, it's a game. in game two, where it's like, hey, we've added just a number to it. People know Final Fantasy.
Starting point is 01:37:04 Everyone's grown up with some understanding of Final Fantasy. I think it's actually way more enticing at this point to say, hey, it is Final Fantasy. We are reinventing this game and this franchise from the ground up. It's modern day. It happens here. This does whatever. They, like, they have fundamentally changed Final Fantasy from the ground up so many different times in different ways. Sure.
Starting point is 01:37:26 is Final Fantasy 11. I mean, looking at 11, 12, and 13, those games are, and even add 15 to that. Like 14 is the only one that's like, oh, it's like 11. But those games are so, so, so different from gameplay perspective, from looking at it. It's like these are different ass games. Somewhere, someone in a marketing room, in a tester room or whatever you want to call it, right, is telling them that's great, that's cool. Your name doesn't reflect that narrative.
Starting point is 01:37:54 because if somebody who played Final Fantasy 10 and has tried Final Fantasy 7 and has tried Final Fantasy 15 and like Final Fantasy 15 the upsell of it's a game for the fans like Tim and for people who don't care like Greg got me in the door. Let's try it.
Starting point is 01:38:11 And it was like, oh, I would not be able to tell you the difference in any of them because I played them all at different times in my life at different things and I don't know them. Yeah. I think it doesn't matter if that's, the story has been different gameplay,
Starting point is 01:38:21 different one ever. If you come out and you're like, it's Final Fantasy. it's reset. This is the time to get on. It doesn't matter that none of these games connect with the exception of the whole 13 universe.
Starting point is 01:38:29 But I mean, I feel like 15 was that. Like the only thing 15 didn't do with what you're saying is it's called 15 and not just Final Fantasy. And that's a big part for people. Because with Fon Fancy, that was 15 was the most modern day setting
Starting point is 01:38:42 that we've ever seen with cars and with all that's never been in Fon Fancy before. You know, and seven setting compared to eight setting, fairly similar or whatever. The nine totally different. That's the more fantasy element versus the like,
Starting point is 01:38:54 like kind of sci-five cyberpunkky feel of evolved and then 10 kind of combined the two. I don't know. It's just I don't know what Final Fantasy could do to do a whole like Final Fantasy reboot where it's just called Final Fantasy and that's actually different than what 16, 17, 18, 19 would have been. I mean, from an outsider standpoint. And this is probably actually, you know what I was going to say this is probably just me? It's not.
Starting point is 01:39:18 You can look at what games PlayStation is doing first party. And what I think a lot of people are doing. you want to, let's reset Final Fantasy. It's Final Fantasy, period. We want you in at the ground floor. It'll still be a fantastical world of chocobos and shit because you need all that crap and monsters that we all know and love are involved with.
Starting point is 01:39:37 But a more modern setting. And then what I want you to do is make it a relatable story. I want you to tell me a story that isn't a prince and this and then. Because even then, all right, cool. Prince No, that's not right. Is it? Okay. Who's the guy?
Starting point is 01:39:53 liked with the blonde hair that took the photos. Prompto. Prompto, sorry. Prince Noctus is going out and he's going to get married and his father gets killed. I'm, I prefer if we didn't have the royalty, but whatever, we're there. But it's like when they showed that, like, playing the game and a month's later, I love the combat.
Starting point is 01:40:12 I'm almost there with the story, but I'm not. But it's when like they put out the trailer of the cloud god rolling in and like all this shit and like, they're holding the baby. And I don't, I'm like, so is this like mystical? God shit or what is happening? And that's my thing. Keep that shit out. Like you could have summons in a way of like,
Starting point is 01:40:30 do it with like persona where it's like, yes, these are normal kids who have a fantastical world to deal in and they're trying to protect everybody. And I'm talking about at the very beginning of persona of trying to protect everybody, their school. There's a bigger subplot here. But like when you show,
Starting point is 01:40:45 it's similar what we talk about like Marvel movies. Why is it always got to be a fucking the end of the world at stake here? Yeah, I don't know. It's hard because I want to. to defend them so much more than they deserve in some ways. Sure. Where I feel like 15 just missed the mark in so many ways that I can't stand for it.
Starting point is 01:41:02 Like I can't be like, you're wrong because 15 did this. It's like, well, 15 fucked all those things up. It was so close. There's, I mean, it was very far and long. But in so many ways, it was so close where I'm like, this story is relatable. This story is very down to earth compared to this end of the world craziness. It's like, no, this is focused on this kingdom and this. story of these people and the characters and how the the four friends are brothers and him
Starting point is 01:41:28 and his his love and fiance and all stuff and it's like fuck this is all so cool and then the story just got so fucked up from the 10 year development yeah yeah that it's like god damn it this could have been one of my 15 i'd still say is up there for me but like i'm never going to describe 15 as one of my favorite final fantasies and it's because they just missed the mark on what they were trying to achieve. And it's because they were to focus on too many other random bullshits. And like,
Starting point is 01:41:57 I don't think that we'll ever see exactly what we were talking about. I know. Maybe, maybe that is what it needs to be is like, we're blowing it up and from the ground up. We're just focusing on a specific thing. But I think 15 could have been that had it not been 13 versus versus 13 before. Sure.
Starting point is 01:42:11 Sure. But then a total other argument I would love to see. And I said this last week. But if Final Fantasy 16 was Project Dr. Path traveler, I'd be thrilled. Yeah. But they would never do that.
Starting point is 01:42:21 because they want Final Fantasy numbered series to be AAA. I like to mean something. But that's, I mean, I hear that. I understand that. But like, that's a knock to, I don't, AAA, what does that mean? I mean, I think that it has. Cutting edge graphics and marketing budget associated.
Starting point is 01:42:37 And like, what I mean, that would still be the, I mean, like, I think that would be the fucking best thing ever. Because then Final Fantasy just means quality RPG experience that with elements that you can expect. Yeah. Whether it's an MMO, they've done this already with 1114.14. where it's like those are different games than the rest of the franchise.
Starting point is 01:42:55 Why can't this game be a fall fantasy game? I mean, that would be the biggest thing of like the way they've, I don't want to say infected, that sounds bad. The way they've imbibed goodwill. The way people suddenly do care, like you're not the only person tweeting about Octopath. Everyone's talking about this game
Starting point is 01:43:09 to a certain extent in this thing. And everybody talks about how much they love it. If you did a fucking Nintendo Direct, whatever, Square Express conference, where it was like, you show the whole game and then you wipe, it's Octopath.
Starting point is 01:43:21 or even open with Octopath's Traveler and then have that crumble fade away and it's like Final Fantasy, whatever. And then it rolled in the gameplay. It would be suddenly it matters with so many more people and it would also do the same thing. We've talked about a lot recently on Games Daily
Starting point is 01:43:34 of historically how games like Journey come in and smash that, oh, it's good for an unloadable game. Like you could go in and be like, no, this is a AAA game. It has a AAA budget. It will have a AAA marketing and it's going to be hearkening back
Starting point is 01:43:46 to you, adult person who has a Switch loved Final Fantasy. Here's the Final Fantasy. you grew up with but modernized. Oh my God. Everything you just said, I am so about, and here's the thing.
Starting point is 01:43:57 This might sound crazy, and it fucking is crazy. But what if they did that? And it wasn't just Final Fantasy something. It was Final Fantasy 16. Yeah. If. That I'd be fine with it.
Starting point is 01:44:08 The fact that right now it's Project Doctor About Traveler and stupid-ass square name, but the fact that working title, they know that this isn't the event. They keep putting that out there. What if they're Kojimaing us right now? That would be awesome.
Starting point is 01:44:21 and people would lose their fucking mind. Listen to us. The square. I mean, this is outlandish. It would never actually happen. So I'm just getting ahead of myself. But I think the thing to keep in mind is the fact that this being a Switch exclusive,
Starting point is 01:44:34 I can't see Final Fantasy 16 being Switch exclusive. Why not? I don't know. Let's fucking do it. We all get so hung up on this bullshit. Who the fuck cares for a franchise where they don't connect? What does it matter that you put out of Final Fantasy just there on Switch? Oh my God.
Starting point is 01:44:49 Fucking, yeah, do it. And that's a call it Mr. Square. give him, let's tell them, you know. Project Octopath. Octopath 8 times 2, 16. Nailed it. Nailed it. Ladies and gentlemen, this has been the kind of funny
Starting point is 01:45:03 games cast. Who are you calling? Mr. Square. What does that mean? Is it Jen? She must have some hookup. Not anymore. She left that life behind. You've reached Nick Scarpino. I'm not available right now. as long as you as soon as possible.
Starting point is 01:45:36 Thanks. At the tone, please record your message. When you finished recording, you may hang up or press one for more options. Octopath Travelers should be Final Fantasy. Thank you. Oh, 16. Final Fantasy 16. Nick, it's Greg.
