send me to all these events yeah i get a little worked up because you know i like to change pants in the
parking lots i don't really like to dress up nice so then i work myself
up. This time, went to Targei, which I never know. I'll usually go to North Face,
shoe pales, buy some absurd clothing for much money that I hate. Went to Target, finally dropped
my guard. So I'm going to try. Yeah. Did this once to get jeans. So Mike, you're not leaving
the store until you get jeans. Okay. Stay there for two hours, sweating bullets, trying on every
jeans in the store until I found the pair. Nice. And so I went to Target with the same mindset,
walked out with two of these, been happy ever since. I like these. I'm going to go find some more.
You know the place to go for clothes?
Costco.
They do have a lot of...
Oh, stop.
Costco, I became a Costco premium member recently.
Just...
Wow.
I believe it's called executive.
Make sure you opt into the magazine.
They don't just give you the magazine.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And let me tell you, I've been there three times in the last week.
And they have good clothes.
They have some good clothes.
Of course, that is the one the only, Tumor Hussein from GameSpot.
Hello.
Hey, how are you?
I buy my clothes from Costco.
You didn't get his Warriors on sale.
No, no.
This was on sale at Chase Center.
Went to a Valkyries game recently.
Yeah.
Great time.
I'm going a couple weeks.
Fantastic experience.
Yeah, I'm going a couple weeks.
I was just telling Joey, like, it's surprisingly cheap to just get a box,
so we should all just go in.
Oh, yeah.
I love that.
For sure, for sure.
Hit me up with it.
And then over there, it's Nitro rifle from Twitch.
Dot TV, Andy Cortez.
You know, here and Mike talking about buying clothes at Target,
like that it's the same man who was buying overalls
who was wearing you know turtlenecks
who bought like the circular glasses that weren't prescription
even though he needs prescription glasses and then he had the beanie at one point
and just like he spit all over the place you got to try it all out
you just sit adventure wait for what's next for me you never know it

For now, let's begin the show with what is and forever will be topic of the show.
Tats, Tats, Stats.
Oh, Andy.
Hey, Greg.
Man, you're leaning back.
That Pragmata is a fucking game something.
Yeah, yeah.
I'm happy you liked it.
Yeah.
I'm so happy.
Pragmat is a unique sci-fi action adventure game from Capcom.
Follow Hugh, a member of the ill-fated.
investigation team and Diana, a young Android as they navigate a lunar facility taken over
by Rogue AI in search of a way to Earth.
Of course, from Capcom came out in April $60 price tag on it.
Metacritic of 85 right now.
And yeah, when it dropped, I forget what review it was competing with, too, for me,
where we had enough people on Pragmata, so I went the opposite direction to keep the review
train rolling.
It was mouse PI for hire.
Damn, same here, yeah.
Same year?
No, same here.
Oh, yeah.
I was on this year.
It's this year, Andy.
And so it's been on the back catalog.
I see it all the time when I open up my steam.
There it is.
I know I got to get to it.
And here we are.
Finally freed from the review grind for a couple weeks.
This has been the longest.
I've been off the clock in a while for something I need to.
And so I went and I was like, Pragmat, it's your time.
Jumped in because I loved the demo at SGF two years ago or whatever it was.
And I was like, oh, the hacking, this is interesting.
But when reviews it dropped, of course, it was reviewed here on the games cast by Tim.
blessing and Roger, a smattering of scores from Roger being very cool on it to Tim being very high on it.
And I was like, oh man, where will I fall? Of course, Tim Getty's an idiot. So like, will I actually fall in line with his thoughts on this one?
And I jumped into this mic and I had such a good time with Pragmata.
I just want to start this off. This game does not feel like a Greg game. So I am stunned sitting here, listening to you hype this up.
Sure. Because when I do think of Pragmat, I do think of like kind of on the heart,
hardcore side shooter with the hacking mechanics.
And I'm like, I don't know if Greg likes that.
Like, we'll see, you do bring up that you do enjoy some shooters back in the day.
Well, this doesn't feel like a Greg game.
The thing about it, I think, is it's so easy to look at it and say, oh, it's a shooter.
I don't feel like it is.
It is.
But like it's, and I know this will sound stupid, a puzzle game to me.
It feels like puzzle room, Mike, because.
because when I had been playing it,
I had been so concerned of like,
oh, is this going to get to those annoying
kind of boss slash enemy encounters
where I have to be hacking
so quickly, but I'm getting attacked.
Playing on normal, the action
never got out of the control, where I was
like, oh, fuck, do I have to dash around?
Yes, did I really enjoy, there's
rooms that are locked with red keys you have to get.
You unlock, I'm like, it's going to be fucking tough.
You ready? And I'm like, yeah, and I would go in there and just
just beat the fuck out of him. Have such a good time.
That was where it was like,
All right, there's seven guys here.
How are you going to juggle it all
and hack them and do the thing
and put on the right?
Like, it was so much more, Mike, in a,
I think all the time when I would put over Celeste.
And I would talk about Celeste.
And when I dug about Celeste is someone
who's not the 2D platformer guy,
let alone the 2D hard as nails, right?
It was, of course, all the accessibility
you could dial the difficulty.
But more importantly was,
I felt Celeste's challenge was very manageable
because it was always get through this section.
Just get through this screen,
and there'll be a save point.
point of the other way.
Pragmatta is so good at cool.
You go in and you do a big thing or go through a section and then boom, here's another
way back to your home base where you can go back, heal up, put, get all the guns you want,
switch out your load out of that.
It's such a video game.
Yeah, it's a shooter in the same way that Dead Space is a shooter.
Yes, and I love it.
But it's like, it's not, it doesn't have the kind of baggage of modern shooters.
You have a very simple loop and it's just about how the game.
manipulates that and how much pressure it puts on you.
But ultimately, it's just that one moment.
You have this one moment, you figure it out.
If you die, you come back to it.
It usually plays out in the same way.
So it's kind of like iterative.
And it has like more the aesthetic and the vibe of it is as important to it
than specifically the shooting mechanics.
I feel like because of that,
pretty much anyone can get on with it.
I feel like.
Such a great time.
I loved my time with it.
I spent way more time with it than I thought I would
because of all the challenge rooms.
wanted to unlock all the red rooms,
wanted to get more costumes and doing all those little
speed run sort of VR training challenge things.
And then, you know, when this game starts off,
I think when I was on the review with Roger and Blessing,
I think I was, I'd play the least of it.
Yeah, you hosted it.
All three of them had beaten it.
No, I think maybe Tim was hosting,
but either way, they had all beaten it.
And I'd put in maybe like two hours.
And I had, of course, in the demo as well.
and, you know, I was like,
I just hope the gameplay keeps on getting more fun
and keeps on, you know,
keeping up a cool level of challenge
because, you know, so far, Hugh, not doing it for me.
And it was, it's the, just the cheesy, whoa, way to go.
Where to go, kid?
And I was just like, I wanted more tension.
I wanted the typical cliche, albeit of, um,
approach of the hard and grizzled dude who's like,
I got to fucking take care of this kid.
And you warm up to the kid.
And then you're like,
god dang,
you know,
I fucking love this little child.
I want her to be my daughter.
Yeah.
And I just didn't love the initial approach.
But by the end of it,
really warmed up to it,
Greg.
Leading,
listening to the review that I,
and I,
again,
I listened to it in April before I started this two weeks ago or whatever.
And it was,
that stuck with me of how you guys were like,
this is the quickest,
flip of all time of somebody who I don't want
I don't like kids to I'm a dad
hey how are you doing and it's like I expected
it based on that
characterization in the review to be
more oh like knee jerky
in my face but I really felt
it was natural to a degree because it wasn't
like you hated kids you had no there was a
throw in the front of like I don't know if it's for me
kind of thing I also feel like it's a
archetype we games seem to
only explore one archetype of a dad
which is like I've
been through some shit I don't have the ability
to connect with this child or I just don't want to be a dad
I've been lumbered with this child.
Yeah, there are people like that.
But also, there are some people who are just born to be dads.
And like, there's some people that are just down for the adventure.
They just realize it.
So when I played it and it was like, he was like, oh, man.
And then like two screens there, he's like, this kid's pretty cool, man.
It's pretty funny.
I was like, yeah, let's talk about like why Hughes turnaround.
Like, in a lot of ways, this is the perfect child of like, I don't got to wipe your ass in the
middle of a meal.
Yeah.
You're not going to get cranky.
the end of the day and you can probably
get all the meals just that really
you can get all the satellite cable channels
like you know what I mean you can do all this stuff
now there was a there's a funny meme
that's going around right now for parents of like
if you like stopping your meal to wipe somebody else's
ass parent things for you
yeah so
by the end of it and
it wasn't necessarily just the approach
of Hugh it was
a bit of the cheesy writing to go along with it
I was like ah you know it's kind of corny
but by the end of it
I, you know, I had really just fallen in love with these two and their relationship and how adorable it all become.
It all became with an awesome ending and cool twists and turns along the way.
It was really, really awesome.
Yeah, and an ending I didn't see coming.
I'll say that and we won't spoil it, obviously.
But I think more than anything, you're talking about, you know, winning you over over time.
I had the same thing with so many different mechanics to it.
Of starting it and getting like, okay, cool, I finished the first room and then there's another way back to the safe house.
That's weird.
I don't know if I'd ever do that.
They unlock the VR rooms and I'm like, cool, I'm just going to main path this.
I'm never going to do that.
And then like later that night or the next night of playing like, oh, man, I don't, I got like 15, 20 minutes in me.
I don't have another, I don't want to go to the next story beat.
I'll try the, finding out the VR missions are rewarding me with the currencies to upgrade my guns, upgrade my character.
I was like, ah, fuck, like falling into it for new costume.
It was this kind of thing.
It was like, damn.
And like, really it is that how much do you want to get out of it?
Because even though I did a bunch of them, I still mainline this.
I golden.
do the Greg thing of, oh, they want me to go right.
I'll go left and find whatever the hidden thing is.
But I wasn't doing the VR missions.
I wasn't doing every red room.
It really was where I was.
And I had 15 hours in the game, it says.
And it's like, I enjoyed that thoroughly.
And if it was, you know, if I wasn't trying to play so much of my backlog right now,
big hops, what up?
Man, I haven't seen you playing everything.
I know, right?
It's, hey, what happens when you finally have freedom?
Yeah.
When there isn't another review and another review and another review, say goodbye to me.
That won't be my life.
When I come back from this vacation, and it's mid-August,
we're into the September thing.
I'm fucked.
Except, of course, for Donald Blood Walker.
Oh, yeah.
I screwed it up again, but you know what to me?
Don Walker.
Love it to Donald Walker.
Anyways, all the little things, and you said it,
and Tim said it in the review too,
and I thought it, even though I guess Tim implanted it in my head
because I listened to the original review of like,
what a video game-ass video game.
And like, we talk about Capcom all the time,
especially as the industry burns around us
and how Capcom has come from, not the depths,
but they were in a down spot to being so on top of the world right now.
And it's by saying, hey, here's an idea pretty basic for a video game in terms of what it's going to be.
And we know it will be fun to play and fun to engage with.
And you can get more out of it if you want to.
Like I unlocked the new game plus and whatever the other mode is.
And I'm like, cool.
I'm never going to do any of that.
But it's cool that it's there if you wanted that kind of thing.
Like they're crushing it.
You can see somebody, I think, of the parallels to what they do with Resident Evil here.
Yes.
And it just works so well.
That company is the only company, I think I can say, that has figured out.
how to capture the nostalgia around them as a company and modernize it.
Like, this is a game that it feels contemporary, it feels modern, but it is very much.
If you, like, scale the visuals of it down and released it on Xbox 360 or even PS2,
it would not seem like a game out of time, out of place.
It gives lost planets.
Yeah, it's got lost planet.
Vanquish.
It gives all those, yeah.
And to, I don't think it should be like, understand.
state how difficult an achievement that is to do with one game, let alone an entire
catalog, because that has been their kind of goal. Like Resident Evil feels like Resident Evil,
but it's also a brand new modern Resident Evil. Street Fighter, the latest one, is liked a lot
because it feels like a classic Street Fighter game, even though it's a modern Street Fighter game.
And I think the way they do that in this game specifically is, it's going to sound weird,
but it's the way I think of it. This game has a game has.
mechanics, not systems.
And I think that goes a really long way.
Because I feel like I look at systems, and systems feel like they are an elaborate
set of mechanics that connect together and then create this ability to do a bunch of things
and give you freedom.
This doesn't have that.
This has got a specific set of tools, and all it does is constrain and build around
them.
So you always have a fundamental grasp of the mechanics.
it always feels manageable.
No matter where you go,
what part or whatever you're doing,
you always know fundamentally
the things I know now
are what I'm going to use to do then.
And I know how to scale for that.
Whereas a game that has systems you go into
and you're like,
I've got to do this,
and then to go there to get this and then this,
and it becomes overwhelming
and it takes that nostalgic fun out of it,
which I think is such a smart approach
to design for this game.
And I think it speaks to
how we trust Capcom
as a publisher with an awesome team of, you know,
a bunch of different teams of developers
to come out with a new IP
and it shows that how much, again,
trust that we have with the publisher,
but also just like this built-in fan base
that will play whatever the next Capcom thing is.
And this is something I've been talking about all week, right,
of like the way Xbox gambled
the way the brand loyalty of Bethesda
and the fact that I talk about
that old packs where the line was out the door for the Bethesda,
merch booth and then to get bought by Xbox and be where we are now where it's like what are people
actually expecting to be here and have this built-in fan base that you can then expand on right it's so
I always bring it back to the only thing I know which is kind of funny but we know if we put up a video
we can get 7 to 9000 views on YouTube and then don't worry about Patreon or the downloads for
audio but like if the headline's good it'll bring in more people it'll do this whole thing of like
the people who aren't with us ride or die but you have ride or die capcoms and now you have
this thing where it's like, I finish Pragmatta too, or
finish Pragmatta, it was like, I want Pragmatta too.
I'm going to pop off so hard when they fucking tease that or show that or, you know,
game awards that fucking drops a trailer in four years.
I mean, I can't wait.
Maybe we're also nostalgic for this because we feel like it's been an IP that's been around
forever because it has been.
So maybe there's part of that.
I don't think it is.
It's like, I honestly never gave those.
I was, when those trailers began for Pragmatta,
I was so outside of being a Capcom fan that I was always like, well, I don't know.
what this is going to be.
This is,
it's going to be a stellar blade
or something that I just
won't care about, right?
And to be here,
obviously this year
with Resident Evil,
now to be here with Pragmatic,
it's like, damn,
I have to pay attention
to anything they put out.
Yeah.
Because again,
even if it's not necessarily
my cup of tea at a glance,
I think jumping into it
and going into it,
you're going to find something there.
I'm telling you,
just a single PVP or a PVE game
with maybe multiplayer co-op
if you want exo primal.
That game was always like,
it's PVP focus.
What is a dino?
What if it's,
only PVE.
I want to shoot dynos with my friends in a cool mix suit or whatever.
Let's expand with that.
You'll get to Iraq.
Yeah.
A crisis.
Now, question for you, before you got into this game, I think maybe I remember right,
your hesitation was, hey, well, I see other environments.
It looks like I'm in the spaceship all the time.
It's going to be these white rooms.
Did it expand on that?
Did it hit what you wanted or did it feel like, hey, I'm in the same room all the time?
They expand out in the right way.
Where, yeah, there are, you are in that spaceship the whole time.
They do different environments with it.
You know what I mean?
And then more importantly, they start adding in, I think, you know, like the blight kind of, kind of that kind of thing.
Like changes it enough where I was never, I was never down in the environment, but I think also then the connection to what I was doing works so well.
Again, a video game-ass game we're talking about where, yes, it's hacking and shooting and all that jazz.
But then it is pinging and going, oh, shit, there's a collectible over there that when I bring back makes a diorama back in the shelter for Diana to talk about.
and I think to their credit of like,
okay, maybe you don't connect with Hugh,
not even as like a dad or whatever,
like Diana,
I thought was so charming and the conversations I'd have with her
and her excitement and legitimate things
and then bringing home that first,
whatever, here's a diagram and it's like,
oh, it does nothing to like make us stronger or better.
It's just she's a kid who wants to enjoy playing with that.
I was like, that's fucking cool.
I don't know what it's like to be a human.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, it's really cool because I think
a lot of people come to that game with their guards up
and because of where,
where we're at.
I think people initially, when they start playing it,
everything that Diana says and Hugh says,
it reads as corny and bad writing until like an hour or so in
where you realize,
oh, no,
this is just characters being earnest.
Yeah.
And being,
like,
good and fun.
And then once you get behind that,
you learn to really love that.
As a British person,
I am inclined to love Diana anyway.
Rest and peace.
Princess die.
But when she's doing...
Still my favorite joke,
and thank goodness you're here.
Lady dog
But when she's like
On the slide
And she's like
Oh man you can't go down the slide
You're a whole ass adult
That's like so cute
And you're like
Damn she got me she got me
Get the little like
Devised SSD and is like
Brrr
And then you're like
This is so cute
Yeah
It's good
This is a good game
To kind of
Punch through the kind of
Cynicism that has been built up
And calloused
Over the years of playing video games
That's why I really love it
I felt like
Myself softening a little
bit when I play it and it makes me feel good.
Yeah, and I also just love the structure and format of all of it and how up front it is
with the player about how much of a video game it is when you are at the home base to go back
to one of the prior zones and see, I didn't get that red room.
I want to go back like that.
I love how just it's like, well, you're playing a video game also, so you want to 100%
this or we want you to get the most out of this.
So go back to that.
I appreciate not having that veil of.
ambiguity of like, oh, what's around this next
corner? It's like, no, no, no, there's a challenge room there, go get it.
And even when you go back and you come in, it's like, you know,
you're 35% done with this area.
It lets you know very clearly what you have to work on.
Chocolate Fox has been super chatting,
because they like Pragmatto.
At first, I wasn't all that excited about Pragmatta,
so tried it on Gamefly.
But after 100% of the game,
I still turned around and bought this game of the year physically.
Glad to have a better review to enjoy.
And also shout it to my adopted daughter, Diana,
who I would bug my wife about how awesome of a child she is.
is while my actual son watches me play.
parentheses,
he's great too,
L.O.L.
And then final one from Chalkbox's ending had me in tears,
man, it hit so hard.
Yeah.
Sure did.
Yeah.
I was unexpected.
I didn't get teared up about it,
but I was like,
surely,
that's not going to happen.
It got me.
No,
it got me good.
You were there crying?
Do you play it on stream or you just played?
Uh,
yeah.
It was review.
No,
no, no.
I played it on.
Yeah,
I ended up beating the game on stream.
Yeah, it was a good one.
Yeah.
Emotional, emotional stuff.
I have one other one here.
Giovanni says,
what if Capcom used the dual action mechanic
for a different genre,
for a different genre,
comma, story,
comma characters,
etc.
Like instead of hacking,
it's runes for a spellblade.
Yeah,
I do what I ask,
like,
how did you do with the hacking?
My concern when I did the demo
was like,
oh,
this is cool and different.
I enjoy this,
but my worry was,
by hour 10,
I'd be like,
hey, no more of this.
You know,
again,
as you get ready to go out,
you have your
unlocked,
outs of what weapons you want to put on
your character, right? But you also have these nodes
that you can then come with. And you'll find in the
environments too that you can then apply to it.
So like, first off
it starts real basic and then you know if you go through these
shields, then you're going to bring down their defense. But
eventually it escalates and I was sitting there like, all right, cool.
I want a burn build.
So I'm making sure I go out with the one if I go
through, it's going to overheat the person.
And then I know I'm using this gun with this
like on top of the nodes. You have
augments. I forget what they call them for your
character. You can go put on right. And I'm doing
heat one there. So I was trying to melt people as fast as I could. That was keeping
entertaining. But then as you go, like, there's a dude who has like four shields that'll
block out sections of the thing you can't get to. It'll get really big, but then you can bring
a nose that'll shrink it and like all this stuff. So there's a lot of push and pull to it where it's not
just eye roll. I've done this a million times. Like I was always on my toes for it. There's also an
auto hack, which has pluses and minuses. Like the plus being, you just hit a button and it just
does it for you. Oh. But if you do it that way, it won't hit all the bonuses that will make the
fight easier. It eats up your special moving. Yeah.
So there is, like, ways of if you just had enough
or if you just want to focus on one thing
because you're being overwhelmed and reset,
they're very good at giving everything a pro and con
that doesn't completely eliminate any of the ideas out of it.
Man, you play this shit on keyboard mouse, Mike?
It is crazy, fast, fast.
Don't do that.
Don't do that.
Crazy fast.
You're just like, drag.
That's what I was going to ask him
because I did play it on keyboard mouse.
I really enjoyed that.
Yeah.
You also do both.
Like, hack, hack, hack.
Really?
Really be the Matrix.
Yeah.
How was it on controller?
Awesome feels good to have.
Yeah.
No, I had no problem with that controller.
I thought it was super simple.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Plus using that steam controller.
Come on, no.
That's a good as controller.
Good as control.
Are you actually using the little touchpad?
Absolutely not.
I'm using that.
I use it a lot.
Well, I don't use it in game.
I use it because if you plug it into a computer, it works.
You can control it on OS.
Yeah.
So I just don't need a mouse anymore.
I'm always in big picture, most I have to worry about it.
I start up with my spooky scary skeleton, steam intro.
Mine is Ronnie the witch.
Nice.
Nice.
Mine is Valfreel.
you're like, yeah, get me to the game faster.
I don't give me shit one fucking little thing I'm saying.
How do I eliminate this?

So in the second half here, the show, I thought I wanted to check in a little bit on where we are with Game of the Year.
Obviously there's always big conversations, and I know, but we are seven months in, and I was shocked playing Pragata.
Because I, ah, shit, fuck.
Somebody, Jake Baldino, I think.
I think I'm giving credit correctly to Jake where when I originally posted about it, he's like, oh, man, my game of the year still to this day.
And maybe I'm wrong.
Maybe it wasn't Jake Me, I think it was.
It's a very Jake game.
Yeah, right?
And I was like, damn, like, I don't see how that could be possible for me.
And then finishing and putting it down, I'm like, damn, this is in the running.
Right now, mixtape is still number one.
but as I've said so many times about mixtape,
I think by the time we get to voting in January, right,
and turning it in our ballots to bear it,
I'm going to be like,
I love mixtape, what a 10 out of 10 experience,
but was it game of the year?
Was it game of the year?
Did I game is, you know what I mean?
Not that it's not a game,
and I'm not trying to open that can of worms.
I'm just like, I start weighing,
and then you go to Pragmatic here,
where it's like, what a not flawless,
but expert video game in terms of being a game.
And the story is good, too.
it's interesting.
I wanted to know what was going on.
Yeah.
The concept of 3D printing things.
Every time I sat down to play Pragmata,
I was so excited to turn it back on.
And I was so excited to get to the end,
but not in the sense of like,
oh, let's get this over with,
which happens to me with so many games I pick up
that aren't a review.
Sometimes with a review, right?
But so I'm, I,
before this, it was mixtape followed by Pocopia.
And now I do think at,
right now it's mixed tape
closely by Pragata with Pocopia underneath it.
Because Pocopia is such a mood
in such a vibe and I have to be in that
mindset. And since putting it down
to move on to 19 other fucking reviews in a row
I've never once thought about
like I gotta get back to Pocopia.
Man, did they nail that game. They did.
Exactly. I rolled credits and I loved it. So it's not that
but it's like now that I'm here
like when the DLC drops
in August right for Pocopia, that'll be
a big like all right cool. Can I jump back on the horse
or is this something that I can't go back to?
And what does that matter out? But Andy,
what are you right now? Where would you put
pragmatic in this conversation?
I think during the demo, I would have never expected pragmatit to be like a top tenor for me.
Contender.
A contender. A contender.
You got to do the hands.
You got to do both hands.
The ten.
Because it's going to be in the top ten.
I can't believe it.
Like when I play the demo, I was like, this is a fun game.
But that's probably all it's going to be.
Yeah.
And yeah, super surprised by the end product of it all.
So there's a really high chance.
and it probably nets out in the bottom half of my top 10.
I think the rest of the year is just, I think...
Forgot about 007.
I think my mind constantly forgets just about how stacked the end of the year looks.
Court High Tower, Super Chat, and says,
too many damn games.
How the hell do I fit in Ocarina of Time remake?
The Blood of Dawn Walker and GTA 6 in my life.
Back to you, Andy?
Yeah, I mean, adding the blood of Don Walker and going, oh, shit, here's another one.
God dang it.
that's going to be an awesome video game.
And I much, I mean, very similarly to Pragmat,
I would have never expected it to have like be a thing that I needed to play.
I don't think before that preview event,
I thought that I needed to play the Blood of Dunker.
I was, I would have tried it out.
Yeah, yeah.
May not have, you know, rushed to possibly see the end credits or whatever.
But after doing that preview event, like, oh shit, this is a must play.
Yeah, I can't wait.
So yeah, and then throw on Control Resident.
The Witchfire 1.0 happening sometime at near the end of the year as well.
Phantom Blade Zero.
First person, Soulslike, style game.
Valer Mortis.
The game that Andy won't shut up about.
God, man.
Andy knows.
Andy knows.
I love Valor Mortis, dude.
I can't wait for that game, too, man.
Tim, where are you at right now with Game of the Year?
With Game of the Year, it's interesting.
I think Pragmat is pretty high up there.
I just, I gravitate towards Capcom's games.
I've always have.
Like, they,
they always remind me of my childhood and loving their types of characters and stuff.
I think the mark of a great Capcom game is,
for me,
like,
could you take the character of the game and put it in Marvel versus Capcom?
And Hugh and Diana fit in perfectly.
So when they,
All-Stars Battle Royal.
Yep,
sure,
exactly.
Yeah,
so that kind of game is like,
works perfectly for me.
I,
there are other games that I have had that similar,
experience with where I play it, I like it, I like it, but it hasn't really stuck with me.
Pocopi is one of them. I had so much fun with it. I need to go back to it.
The ones that I really have stuck to is, uh, on top of Pragmaa is Bond, which I'm still playing.
And the other one I think I guess forgotten criminally is Soros.
I love Saros, not just because it's got Rahul in it.
That's a big negative around here for us.
Yeah, I mean, I get lucky because people, because people, yeah, I benefit from it because people come
up to him and he's like, I loved you and Saras.
Hell yeah, brother.
Check me out with my latest
Mike Flanagan joint.
Yeah, Saras is my
number two game.
No, number three right now.
Yeah, I really love that game.
I think in a lot of ways it's misunderstood as well.
I've been thinking about that game a lot
on how I'm going to make a video about it,
but how much it does for representation
without being anything about it.
Like it's good.
I love it for that.
But fundamentally, I love mechanics.
I love the world that they build.
It's vaguely dark souls, you know, dark fantasy is.
So it goes perfect with me.
And then it's just a game-ass game.
Like go towards the blue orbs.
Watch out for the yellow orbs.
Don't get hit by the red orbs.
You can parry this.
It's just like it hits.
It presses my brains in all the right places.
So it's pretty high up there.
But then obviously there are a bunch of other games that have got like esoteric ebb came out earlier this year.
Very good game.
one Star Hunter
Resident Evil 9 Reck William
Yeah
There's a lot of good games
So it's tricky to say right now
Which one's at the top
But I think Pragma is definitely in the top
Four I would say
Michael
Yeah I've kept the long list throughout the year
My list keeps growing
We brought this up back in May
when we had our last check
And I said
I could probably give you 20 games
That could be in my top 10 right
And I think the people that still
The games that stay up at the top
Resident Evil 9
Fort's Horizon 6, Pocopia and James Bond are really kind of solidified as like,
here are the top dogs.
But when I go down, right, Slay of the Spire 2, early access still gets me every night before
bed.
I am playing that game.
Mugenics made me bash my head against the wall, right?
You have games like Marathon who are just so much fun, but we'll never get the love that
it deserves.
But unfortunately, that game is awesome.
You're not alone on that sky.
And the super chat says top three in order are Requiem, Marathon, Pragmatum.
lot of marathon love out there for people who have just continued to play it.
And then on the flip side, right, there's games like, I mean, you know, I love a good friend's
slap game. Gamble with your friends, Mechamelian.
These games are so much fun to play if you give them a try.
And I think our audience in particular has given a couple of these games to try.
We've streamed Gamble with your friends.
We've shown you how much fun that is.
But that Mechamelian game is awesome, right?
Taking a tried and true formula of prop hunt and hide.
seek and saying, hey, how do we build
off of that? And you can just
paint yourself into any environment.
And you and your friends are going to have the best time
for $7. And it's selling 10
million copies. It's like, I feel
great being not alone in that, knowing that
like other people are playing this and loving
it. Question for the panel.
Has anybody
played Big Hops here?
I played a little bit. I bought
it. And I have not booted it up.
I did a whole Greg way yesterday.
I stayed home and worked from home and did
emails, don't worry. But yesterday's Gregway was, here are the five games I've been gaming.
And I was talking about, like, after Pragmatta, I'm still not on a review. So I'm cleaning
up backlog. And I gave five impressions real quick. And I was like, today I have two different
redacteds to look at. And then a big hops has been calling me. And I was like, I remember it coming
out. I remember Roger kind of being interested in it. And I was like, maybe I'm just in a part,
a headspace right now where I need something cute, colorful video game ass platformer kind of thing,
right? And I played my redacted stuff yesterday. And then last,
Last night sat down.
I got another redacted code yesterday.
Then I sat down and last night and I was like,
I just want to play something quote unquote simpler or whatever, right?
And booted up big hops and I was fucking floored.
Like it is so good.
And I had gotten an email.
The whole reason I did, it was on my mind is I think it was four months ago.
I got an email about the DLC that was photography DLC that they put in the game.
And I was like, oh man, I like tow them a lot.
I like photography and games.
That actually makes me want to play this.
Whereas, hey, it's a platformer.
It's a Mario game.
Didn't do it for me.
right and so i was like all right cool and so jumped in was florid not i haven't even
unlocked the photography stuff just playing a mario galaxy mario odyssey game where you're a frog but
the voice acting the voice acting superb the visuals amazing the world they i was like i was like
i don't ever mean to be this guy you know how much i love indie games but i've been playing all
games of shapes and sizes in this break and i was like damn this is so another echelon
than so many of the indie games I've played
to the point that I was like, damn,
I'm bummed out that I didn't play this
when it originally came out.
And then I went to the Steam page,
I'm like, it came out in January.
Like, Big Hops is one of,
there's a documentary I know out that I haven't watched.
I want to finish the game first.
About, I think it took seven years.
So we've been hearing about Big Hopes.
There was a Kickstarter for Big Hopes.
They were on the indie mix.
Well, this is the trailer for Mix.
They were on the indie mix that we did with them.
So it's like, I've heard a lot about Big Hopes,
which kind of gave it that,
oh, this is a known quantity.
It's been out forever.
but I was shocked that it's January of this year
how good it is. It doesn't
have an IGN review which I know isn't the end all
but I was like man I thought
I was sleeping on it but I think
everyone might be sleeping on big ops
I'm gonna keep playing this motherfucker and I'm gonna be the champion
for this I'm gonna be this pro
Hell yeah
What'd you guys give it? I think it was an eight or a nine
fucking bullshit bonn
Tim would have played this but he was on his pandemic
Yeah that makes perfect sense too
Yeah yeah I mean Tim played Nico de Rico
I'll be shoving this shit down Tim's throat as soon as he gets back.
Yeah, you better.
This is, if I like it, you know, maybe it'll be interesting as somebody who isn't as connected to the Mario platformer.
I've played everything and I love it.
I'm really vibing with it, but I wonder how it'll hit with everybody else.
I would have played this too, but it was also like game of the year season for me, uh, putting our stuff together and then also our anniversary stuff.
So it was like January is always a bad time for me to play games.
You want switch or you want Steam?
I'll fuck with the switch code.
All right.
I'm going to get everything close for this.
We're going to go do this.
We're going to fucking make big hops a thing, everybody.
Yep.
If you don't know, tongue swing, free climb, and build your own path forward
in a new kind of 3D platformer.
Plant veggie bounce pads, tight ropes, hook shots, and much more.
Find a way home through the huge desert, ocean, and mountain worlds,
and collect bugs, upgrade your backpack, and meet animal friends along the way.
And again, the characters hop, his voice so good.
So cute.
And I don't played Rundice?
No.
Rune Dice is one of those games.
When you said, I just want something simple and easy to play,
Roondyce is so much fun.
It's pretty cheap
and it's one of those games
where it's like,
I don't want to commit to something.
I just want something satisfying.
Kind of like pegglish, if you know what I mean.
It's just about like this.
All you do is you have dice.
Let me read it for you.
Yeah, go on.
Tactical deck building
and a bite-sized sessions.
Launch dice to create magical chain reactions
choose from distinct hero classes
with unique abilities,
build synergies between dice relics
and ruins to defeat challenging bosses.
Yep, you just throw dice.
If you got a number one dice,
you throw it at the number one.
Hopefully it bounces into a number
too and it keeps escalating and that kind of defines how much damage you do in the top layer of
of the RPG and then you get different dice effects and that kind of stuff.
How fucking dare you introduce this to me right now?
It's dangerous.
So much fun.
I think it's very slept on and it's one of those games that's like, like I said, you pull it out and no matter what how long you play it for, what happens in it, you always leave feeling satisfied.
And I think that's the mark of a really good game.
That this, yeah, I'm in.
I'm going to get you code for this too, Edie.
Okay.
We're in.
All right.
Thank you.
Works right on Steam Deck.
That's what I want to hear.
That's what I want to hear.
Yeah, I'm about like, I mean, this last, like, month has just been disgusting for Slay the Spire, too.
Oh, my God, yes.
Like, I can't stop playing it.
Mike had told me he'd gotten his first clear, and I was like, damn, you know, I should get back to Slay the Spire.
I didn't fall.
Like, as much as I enjoyed it when it first released, I just, I wasn't sucked in.
And then once I got my first clear and now it's.
like seeing the, just seeing the way all the chemistry happens between these cards and
it's so satisfying, man.
You know how bad my Slater Spire problem became?
This is how bad it got.
I wanted to spend every waking moment just playing that game.
So I got to this setup where I had my Steam deck.
Oh, no.
And then I got sent one of those X-Real glasses.
We know them well.
So those things are incredible, by the way.
I feel like they, it's,
it's hard to buy one because it can be quite expensive.
But oh my God, once you have one, you put it on, you're like, oh, this is so much easier.
So I'd plug one of those in and position the screen next to my TV so I could like watch stuff and do at the same time.
I got an eight-bit controller, the ones that are like so small that you can keep it in one hand.
Oh, yeah.
And so I would sit there just like one-handed plank slated spire looking to the left.
I swear to God, I felt like I was in a place.
I was like, oh my God, I'm going to die here and I'll be happy.
Yeah, I played the shit out of Slay the Spire with my X-Ril's on a flight.
And a lady next to me really freaking out.
Really looks like she wanted to ask them questions because she was watching me play on the handheld
or on my Steam Deck for a while.
And then eventually, you know, I'm sure she saw me movies.
He's playing a video game.
And then I plugged in the X-Ril's once the seam deck was charged enough because it was like really, really low battery.
and plugged in the X-Reels
and they're playing.
And I see this lady
and she's like sitting in it
and she's like, she looks at
she's like, he's still playing the game
but then she looks at my face
and then she looks up forward like
what's he looking at?
And then I see like a bunch of weird
glances, yeah.
I was like,
you should have done.
You should just like let your mouth open a bit
and let like a little bit.
Help help.
And then just slowly start
turning towards her.
Yeah, the X-reels
when I got him
and brought him to bed for the first time.
Yeah.
First off, Jen was like, you're such a dork.
And then when she realized she could like lay on my chest
and not have a fucking light of a switch to or a steam deck.
And everything, she's like,
all right, he's actually pretty dope.
Yeah.
You don't need to make funny while you play Octopath again.
We have more super chats coming through.
Uncle Death, Super chats with his game in the list so far and says,
number one, marathon.
Number two, Forza, number three,
00-4, Luna Abyss, and number five, vampire,
Crawlers.
Oh, yeah, vampire crawlers.
On my list, I was wondering if vampire crawlers got out there to the masses and more people.
It didn't blow up like vampire survivors did.
But, yeah, I was wondering where the world stands on vampire crawlers.
We did a couple.
Sold like a million plus still.
Yeah.
That's another one that's in the library, obviously, but I haven't got the time too.
A couple of other games that I think one, zero parades came out earlier.
Yes, it did.
A lot of, obviously, weird stuff going on around that studio and stuff, but specifically
on the game, I think a good follow-up to Disco Elysium, which is a hard thing to pull off,
but it showed that this team could make something new that maybe isn't held to the same standard
or as good as that, but few things are going to be because that was like a, I think a game-changing
moment that game, but this is a great follow-up to it, artistically really interesting, some
great writing and concepts in there. I think it's a very under-rate game. And then more recently,
I'm not a sports game player
but NBA the run
Oh yeah yeah yeah
A lot of fun
As someone who played a lot of NBA jam
And now has an NBA jam machine in my room
Wow
That's sick
That's sick
I really enjoyed that
It's a good easy to get into
sports game you know
And it's just fun
Mike you played a much that
Yeah we played a bunch of NBA the run
I spoke a lot with the devs
Which was very cool
A very small team right
And so they knew they were taking on a lot
kind of fitting into that NBA street genre and, you know, play that people want.
And, of course, when you bring up NBA Street, a lot of people have a lot of nostalgia.
They want that.
They desire to bring it back.
And so there's a lot of expectations.
And this team was so small that they were like, hey, we knew the expectations.
We're trying our best to get there.
And I am really happy that they had the big announcement of like, hey, we hear you.
We know what you want, which is the offline single player campaign.
We're building that out.
We're getting new NBA players as well.
So I think this is a game
Has probably a good runway now
Which when it came out
A lot of people liked it
They wanted it
So I think they have a solid runway of like
We're gonna deliver the things you want now
And really stylish fun
I saw someone run a team of three Wembees
The other day and I was like
It sounds like cheating
It was messed up out
It's awesome
We have more super chats
And recommendations coming on through
DG Kenta says
Is anyone here played Pragmatto
With the Steam Controller
Layout that lets you
swipe the touchpads to hack, it's next level satisfying.
That's cool. I never investigated that. No, I didn't do that one.
Beans Got Game says, loved Pragmatic. Capcom took its time with that game and delivered.
Would be my game of the year, but I still got to give the honor to Residentable Requiem.
Yeah. I'll be interested to see where that nets out this year, as I always am, obviously, with our game of the year.
But I know we all enjoyed that so much, but outside of Tim, I don't hear us all talk about it as much.
Now, granted, we're not recapping. There's always another fucking game of the year contender every week.
I think the flaws of that game
are going to become more apparent
as we get closer to the end of the year.
Yeah, I think
a lot of people are really high on it.
I think it's also not the best
Resident Evil game in a long time.
I think the middle chapter of it
is a point in the area.
Yeah, and like narratively.
It's the thing where I enjoyed the shit out of that
and that's such a great time with it,
but I have not thought back on it.
Yeah.
Where I'm like, oh, what about it?
Even like, oh, that was a great time.
Like, I enjoyed it.
I'm not saying it's like one of those games
I kind of played, enjoyed, put down.
And like, when you're mad,
I think I'm like, what a unique and interesting thing
they did with the hacking. It's fun when you're in the thick of it,
but when you take a step back and if you want to like
really look at it as an analytical thing, then you see
where the issues are. But when you're
in the thick of it, it's just a lot of fun.
Yeah. It was a freaking blast. Yeah.
I had more fun with that than
any of the more recent Resident Evil.
And I think a lot of it is the
nostalgia, the pulling at the nostalgia strings
and say, remember this thing, remember that thing.
Remember that bad guy? Like, all of that stuff
completely worked on me. And that's not even
and not even a big Resident Evil fan.
I remember that shit
and it was really hype
when those big moments happened.
They don't play Titanium Court.
It's my game of the year.
That game is so weird and so fun.
It's so fucking good.
I still tell people to play it as much as I can.
It's a match three
strategy game
is the best way I can describe the
gameplay,
but it's also just like a very whimsical
in weird
written story
and world
you kind of get Isikaa'i'd into this really weird world
that's constantly at war with each other.
I would equate the writing style very much so
to works like Hitzhiker's Guide to the Galaxy,
the Phantom Tollbooth,
and a lot of it is, you know,
using this gameplay and these gameplay styles
that in a lot of games, especially like in the mobile space,
are used as kind of like this addicting loop over and over again.
and the kind of core analysis that I think the game is trying to make is, to what end will you kind of, you know, abuse your relationship with video games in a really fascinating way.
And I keep telling people to play it.
It's still my game of the year.
Also, the music is so fucking fun and silly.
And every time it's time it's time to battle these other castles and it plays that little jam.
and they're all attacking each other
in a kind of auto-battler way,
I'm just, I'm viving out.
And I lost like,
you know, I played like 20 hours
of this game in, I think, a week,
and I was just,
I had a lot of late nights with it.
I still think about it constantly.
Hell yeah.
Do you have a game that is older than a year
that you've been playing this year?
Like from last year?
Yeah.
Vampire the Massgrade Blood Lines 2.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, man, he's been playing that as a desk,
but he hasn't played.
Mike's been playing every Zelda,
I've played every Zelda.
Where are you up to now?
I'm at, what came am I playing right now?
Skyward Sword.
Oh, yeah.
So this is my fifth Zelda,
started an Aquarium of time.
Now at Skyward Sword, having a blast.
Do you know the one piece of trivia about Skywood Sword that everyone has?
It's the,
Vigo Moulson, kick the helmet and broke his toes for the Zelda.
Link used to be left-handed, and now he's right-handed?
No, about the theme tune.
Oh, no.
The theme tune for Skyward Sword, I believe, is Zelda's lullaby backwards.
So once you listen to her, you're like, oh.
Let me tell you what this game.
is great. A lot of people will tell you this game
might not be that good. This game fucking rocks.
Okay. Right now,
rankings go as this. Okay, up at the
top, Twilight Princess, then
into Skyward Sword, then Wind Waker,
then Aquarius Mask, then, Aquarius,
Mask. Ask me tomorrow.
Change them all about that. Okay, they change every day.
I predicted the Skyward Sword love from Mike.
It's a very him game. Also,
Tam, I went back to the
Batman Arkham games, as we do from time to time.
But this time on Switch with
the handheld
like boost mode on Switch 2.
So I'm playing them handheld
and they look just as good
with Switch 2 boost mode as they did
when they came out in like 360 and PS3.
Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City
fucking rock on the Switch 2.
I forgot that came out on Switch.
I can't say the same.
I don't know if I could say the same about Arkham Knight.
I didn't even try Arkham Night on Switch 2,
but I highly recommend handheld boost mode
for the Arkham games.
You have derailed my weekend.
Hell yeah.
Hell yeah.
Marco Super Chats and says,
guys,
did you play or hear about
Banquet for Fools?
It's a unique CRPG
like games released
like game released this year,
not for everyone,
but it's cool.
The scene description reads,
Tabavura needs four volunteers
to solve the mystery of an abandoned village.
Answer the call to adventure
in this party-based
beat-em-up RPG.
I saw you,
looking at this, Greg, and I started doing the, uh-oh, it's giving me the Diablo Vod.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And, you know, I love that art style. I love the look of that game.
So I'm interested now to learn more about this game.
Yeah, exactly. I don't know. I have not heard of this. Art style is very unique. Yeah, yeah. It's got
almost like Coraline kind of feel. Yeah, yeah, exactly. But the beat them up, I didn't expect,
I didn't see coming. Wow. Look at these puzzles. Awesome. Huh.
Huh. Good poll. Very good poll. Very positive reviews over on Steam right now.
came on on March 5th.
I'm also impressed
like...
I'm impressed with like
when you pull back
and you kind of
get that more like
CRPG angle on it
like how much it
really evokes that
like old school era
of like fallout and stuff.
It looks so pre-rendered.
Yeah.
I'm uh...
In October we get the 1.0 release all.
This is like the year of like finally one
early axis.
Everybody's coming out early access.
Fields of mystery
hitting 1.0.
Oh, yeah.
Power World today hitting 1.0 blowing up.
Massively.
I'm really excited for Valheim's 1.0.
That's such a fun survival adventure game.
That's a good one.
Assassin's Creed Black Flag re-synced.
I just had so much fun with that game.
Am I putting that and Power World on my top 10?
No.
If I've already played them, it's like, I don't know.
But, man, it's so good.
And shrouded, 1.0.
I've been playing this on it on my Steam Deck.
Great game.
Hell, yeah.
What a great time for video.
games as players.
Not as developers, publishers or reporters.
Consumers, though, lots of good shit to play right now.
I think there's one super chat that I had lost,
but it is doing that thing where it freezes and crashes when I try to scroll around.
Oh, here we go.
It was Hamable Porker.
Oh.
Kind of funny album on repeat, fire emoji.
Can the next album give the official kind of funny theme song?
Hi, by the way.
That was such a good album, by the way.
Thank you. We killed it.
Oh, so good.
Oh, and here's the one.
Atcher strikes out super chats and says,
for those concerned about your wallet
during this incredible year of gaming,
don't forget to support your local library.
I've got 007, Res Evil 9, Star Fox,
Mario Tennis, and Pragmetta on hold right now.
Smiley emoji.
And that is a great point.
Damn, Mario Tennis was this year.
Oh, yeah.
Dang.
That is crazy.
What a letdown.
God damn.
Back-to-back letdowns.
Soccer to this.
No, for the Mario sports titles.
Like that.
We got to really get a grip on that because we can knock that out the park.
I think it's a letdown for us,
but I think what we actually need to get comfortable with is it's no longer for us.
It's working as intended for a generation of people that isn't us.
I also think the multiplayer, I don't think we give enough love to when you're actually doing that stuff.
I just,
the major thing is the frustrating way you have to unlock everybody to make multiplayer expansive and fun.
It's really annoying.
Yeah.
