Starting point is 00:02:54 Come on out, have lunch. Tomorrow we are at Appalachian Rose Farm. in Rogers, Kentucky. Rogers, Kentucky. So come on out and join us before the weekend starts, and then I'm heading off to Evansville for a little OBC art action. I haven't heard from you, so I assume you got a date or something. I kind of forgot about it.
Starting point is 00:03:14 When are you going? Look at this. I thought you all had a moment yesterday. I thought you were talking about how it would be fun. It would be fun. I got a busy day Saturday. Probably know. I'm not going to say we play Saturday.
Starting point is 00:03:27 Yeah. Why do you want to go say Kentucky? He's playing Saturday. I had a late night last night. Got a late night tonight. Okay. What are you doing tonight? 13th region basketball down at the Corbin Arena.
Starting point is 00:03:37 Oh, you're calling the game? Yeah. Who's playing? Clay County. Shout out, Richie Farmer. But is Harlan County play? I think you play the first game tonight, but I don't, I think I'm just on board for the second game. I got to double check.
Starting point is 00:03:49 So you only agreed to do the second game that will be late at nine? I'm not really for sure about that. I need to check with you don't even know you might be doing the first game. That's very true. I'll find out of thing. I need to call him Neil Middleton and see what's going. on down there. I think not knowing. You want to go with me? I think one of the rules of being a broadcaster is knowing A, who's playing, and B, what time the game is. Those are two things I think,
Starting point is 00:04:11 Drew, that you really need to be a good successful broadcaster. Oh, you learn those before you even start with the roster. I mean, that's the bare minimum of your job. You definitely got to know when it is. All right, I have an update that I think everybody wants to hear, especially if you listen to the Fade This podcast. I do. Shannon, I'm going to tell you the story. I'm going to tell you the because I know you don't know it, but we have an update to the moose story. Okay, I don't know the moose story. No, I don't have a clue. This is a wonderful story.
Starting point is 00:04:37 So, Shannon, do you know what the Iditarod is? No, explain that to it. So in Alaska, they have a dog race. You go from, like, one side of Alaska to the other side of Alaska with dogs, and you just sit there and you go, mush, mush, and then you, like, go through the snow, right? What does mush mean? Mush means go, dog. Okay.
Starting point is 00:04:57 Just like, go. Yeah. And that's dog language. Dog language. And so you tell the dog to go, and it's multiple dogs. It's like, and it pulls a sled. And they've been doing this forever. And I saw a headline a couple days ago.
Starting point is 00:05:10 We talked about it on Faye This I really liked that said, former I Diderod Champion delayed because he had to kill a moose. Okay. So I guess he was going along, and a moose came out, and Shannon was like, you know, and he. like tried to eat the dog. No, I'm not, I'm not kidding. He tried to eat one of the dogs.
Starting point is 00:05:34 Hungry moose. And you don't want that. These are your dogs. You're trying to mush, and it's harder to mush if you got an uneven number of dogs. That's very true. And so he took a gun, and he shot and killed the moose. Uh-huh. I mean, I don't blame him.
Starting point is 00:05:49 But in the Iditarod, Chinan, there are rules when you kill a moose as to what you have to do. Oh, my. You can't just drop a moose. and keep going. Okay? When you kill a moose, you have to gut the moose. Right there on the spot.
Starting point is 00:06:05 On the spot, you have to gut the moose, put it in your bag, and then take it with you to the next rest point. You can't just leave it out there. I don't know what the reason is. Maybe it's like wasting meat or something,
Starting point is 00:06:19 but you cannot just, you have to gut the moose and leave it out there. The last time a moose had been killed on the I did rod was 1985. Do you remember the woman's, name that did it? Some of the butcher. Susan.
Starting point is 00:06:31 Susan the butcher. Susan Butcher, which Drew said, that was her real name, Shannon. Susan Butcher. Very appropriate, yeah. Perfect. She, however, killed the moose in
Starting point is 00:06:41 1985 with an axe. Oh, my goodness. Wow. Because back then you weren't allowed to take guns. So she killed the moose with an axe. I don't want to know how that went. Yeah. But, all right.
Starting point is 00:06:53 So anyway, guy kills the moose. The story I read says he had to gut the moose he took with him. There's an update today. Okay. He has been penalized two hours in the race for not allowing, not gutting the moose good enough. Oh, come on. Somebody went back and checked his work.
Starting point is 00:07:13 Apparently, that's what I was going to say, Shannon. I mean, apparently someone went back and checked the work to make sure the moose was gutted well, and he didn't do it enough so that he is having to wait. for two hours on a penalty. When he was interviewed at a checkpoint about it, you want to know what his answer was? What's that? It was a tough situation.
Starting point is 00:07:37 Mistakes were made. I just have to tell you, I didn't know about any of this. It would be like in a NASCAR race if you accidentally hit a bird and you had to get out of the car and take care of the bird before you went back in. That's what I was going to ask you.
Starting point is 00:07:54 Are there other races where you have to get somebody to get to the finish line? It seems like the town. or the skill of gutting would have nothing to do with the race that you're in. Not this guy's fault. The moose came out and endangered the lives of his dogs. He's protecting his dogs. That's going to put him behind the race to begin with to take care of the moose and gut the moose.
Starting point is 00:08:14 And then he's got to carry this big hunk of meat on his sled. That's going to slow him down too. Then they penalize him on top of that. That's crazy. But he didn't do it well enough. I'm a lot more interested in that. I did a rod Doug Schaels going to the monitor to see how he did out in the field of play. Is that really someone's job to pick up the carcass and think, oh, there's a little meat left on this.
Starting point is 00:08:33 Let's dock him two hours. You think they went to the moose monitor. How else did they review it? I don't know. I have no idea. And at this point, is it better to just leave it and take the time penalty? Like, I'm leaving the moose. Give me six hours.
Starting point is 00:08:46 But here's what I was really wondering. Why is that the rule? Okay, so I could understand if there was a rule against killing the moose. because you wouldn't want to encourage moose killing. Yeah. But at the same time, like you said, you still might have to do it because of whatever reason. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:05 But, and again, I'm not a hunter, and so I think everyone kind of knows that. But why would there be a penalty for how you, why would the people care whether or not you gut the moose? I understand you want to gut the moose if you want to have meat, but why do the people who run the race care if you have, have meat or not. Yeah, the vultures will take care of that for you.
Starting point is 00:09:31 Yeah. Am I missing? Like, it's nature. Nature will take care of it. I don't get it unless, like, is the moose an endangered species up there? They're trying to be protected? I can't imagine it is. I feel like, I mean, I watch Northern Exposure. There was a moose every day or two walking down the street. Maybe they don't want to encourage someone getting a lead and just dropping mooses everywhere,
Starting point is 00:09:52 like banana pills for everyone behind them, and you just have a trail of mooses behind the leader. You think that was a concern? That could have been something they had to deal with. All right. Well, maybe somebody will know, and if they do the text machine, 7-7-2. But I wanted to update you. If you listen to Fade This, by the way, this is our most downloaded episode of Fade This ever. Is it really?
Starting point is 00:10:11 Nice. The moment we got done, I thought that's the silliest one we've ever done. But that's what people want. Oh, no, no. They're not listening to us, true. They're not listening to me and you to actually make. No, I completely are saying it. I'm saying this is our most ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:10:23 That's why it's so funny that it's got the... I will say it's the most... KSR thing we've done in many years. It made me think about, we might have to get the band back together and do a top 50 podcast again this spring. Amen. Because that was, those are absurd. Who's next, Shannon?
Starting point is 00:10:40 Dan. Dan. How are you, Dan? Hey, Matt. Hey, Dan. Hello. Yes, go ahead. Yeah. I was in the bank this week. I'll tell you, the excitement we were in the line talking about.
Starting point is 00:10:55 One of the administrators came out. We start talking about the cats. I mean, this team is starting to peak right now. And, Matt, I don't know if I've ever been more excited about a team than I am for this team this year. Really? Is that right? You've never been more excited than this year.
Starting point is 00:11:14 Yeah, well, you know, and Matt, you know, saying that, you know, I think it maybe it's just been so long since, you know, we had a dry spell that we kind of forgot what it was like to be exciting about a team. but yeah you go back I mean I think I was like that for sure in 2010 with the wall team I was as excited as I but again like everybody's got their own personal I mean we certainly got spoiled there for a few years
Starting point is 00:11:40 where every year we just assumed we'd be in the championship game but yeah I mean I'm excited about it go ahead yeah I don't know if you'll let me say this not can I give you an update on Tennisorsors Rex you know my grandson Quickly, yes, very quickly. Okay, he got an invitation to the world championship. It's in Al-A France.
Starting point is 00:12:03 That's where he's playing. He won the first three matches. He plays this week. He plays the number one European 12-year-old. You can Google it. Now are their number one European 12-year-olds. Yeah, the number one 12-year-old, and it's going to be a tough match for him. All right, well, good luck to your grandson.
Starting point is 00:12:20 I appreciate it. How about that? He's already 12. The number one 12-year-old in Europe. How did they even get to? all the European kids together. When I was 12, I hadn't played any French kids. He's got to be talented.
Starting point is 00:12:36 He's going over to France to play, so good luck to him. I'm not 100% sure I knew what France was when I was 12. I mean, I might have heard of it, but I don't know that I knew much. My tennis rival, they brought a high schooler in from Spain into Hopkins County that we thought it was a little unfair. He was a lot better at tennis. Yeah, Oneida, Onita, Onida, Baptist. You know, that was, I guess, the school where you stayed there. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:59 They just all of a sudden have random Swedish kids. And I was like, can you imagine being a kid in Sweden? I mean, told you're coming to America and ending up at Oneida Baptist. Yeah. What a change that is. Culture shock. You know, I mean, I haven't even been to Sweden, but I got to assume it's not a lot like Harlan County. I've seen pictures.
Starting point is 00:13:18 I don't know, but I feel like it would be a big transition. Who's next? Marsha. Marsha. How are you, Marsha? I'm pretty good. I have an unpopular opinion. Okay.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Before I'm negative, I'm going to say something positive. This year at football, the students were out of this world. They filled it every game. They stayed to the end 99% of the time. But these people wanting these students down on the floor at Rupp Arena, what do they do? We do not have an exceptional student class in basketball. There were times at the beginning of the year, the games that, you know, as Ryan calls,
Starting point is 00:14:07 poop schools or poop states or whatever, they don't even stand up when the players run out on the floor. They don't count down when the shock clock's about to come out. They don't have any unique cheers or something. So tell me what would lie. have a rough arena to move their seating. They don't impress me. That's my unpopular opinion. They don't impress you.
Starting point is 00:14:35 All right, I got you. Okay, so first of all, I like unpopular opinions when they're not mean, so I appreciate the call. Drew, what do you think about Marsh's comment that why would we give students better seats? They're not good in the seats they're in now. I'm going to side with Marsha a little bit. The eruption zone could be better for all the complaining they're doing.
Starting point is 00:14:53 I have a video on my phone. It was either the Tennessee game or Gonzag. One of those big ones erupts rocking, and I do a video from my seat where I'm panning. And when I get to the eruption zone, half of them are on their phones where the arrest of the arena is rocking. So I will side with Marsha a little bit that the students that are sticking out their chest, they could still be doing better in what they already have. So, yeah, I have mixed emotions because on the one hand, I know what Marsha sent. on the other hand i think there would probably be students who would say well if we if we were right
Starting point is 00:15:27 on the floor we would be more into it and that's probably true the students and it's not the ones that are here now what heard it for the student section were like i'm talking like 2016 17 18 when we had good teams there were games that the students didn't even fill their seats and i think that was when mitch barnhart kind of was like well and then They ended up giving, I mean, remember the student section used to be bigger. They took a lot of student seats away. Now, the people in school now, that wasn't you. But there was a time that there was talk about the student section was too big.
Starting point is 00:16:03 And like, why do we have so many of these seats? You know, so I don't totally agree with Marsha, but I'm also not saying it's crazy. But the students would probably say if you put us all around the court, we'll be going nuts. And it's kind of get, not going to get any better. with the way the court refiguration is about to happen. They're going to put the lower, I mean, the lower range is going to be the high budget
Starting point is 00:16:27 that big donors are going to be down there, not the students. That's going to be a conversation after the season. Yes. I mean, there are a lot of people who are very, very, very upset about that. And I think where it's going to hurt is, I think you're going to see some really bad,
Starting point is 00:16:45 like we're going to have games where you see like in the NBA, where the arena's rocking, but the first four rows have three people in them. I'm worried we're going to get some of that because of how they're doing it. Somebody pointed out a lot of the people will be back in their suite room, and the game will start. Most it will be empty. I think UK's, I understand why they're doing it, but I think they're making a mistake.
Starting point is 00:17:03 I think this, you know, you made that mistake with football. Don't make it again with basketball. Because it's one thing to give away seats for the students, but to give away seats for the highest bidder, where you're just giving them to corporations, I don't know. I think that's not to me what college basketball is about. If you're always on the go, running, hitting the gym, practicing yoga, playing tennis, where you might have pain.
Starting point is 00:17:25 Court physical therapy is a way to keep you from having it. They help tailor a plan based on your physical therapy needs. Only court can help you with your pain, not only, but they're the best ones. It's KORT.com. That's, KORT.com. KORT.com. We'll take a break. Be right back.
Starting point is 00:17:43 Kentucky Sports Radio. To talk to Matt Jones and the crew call the Clark's Puppet Shop phone line at 859-280-2287 or 1-800. 606, 4263. You can also text Matt on the A-Vision Glass text machine at 772-774-5254. Welcome back, Tughey Sports Radio. You said you have an explanation on the moose phenomenon. Yeah, the Iditarod Trail Committee says here they work closely with local wildlife management
Starting point is 00:18:15 because it's such an area they want to preserve. They're really trying to discourage messing with any of the animals at all. So if you have to, they really hit you with a big penalty. It's all about just preserving our Alaska and our moose up there. Okay. So apparently if you don't gut it, it'll spoil the meat, and then that's an issue. What do you call multiple moose? Are they mees?
Starting point is 00:18:38 We talked about that on the show. I don't know. On the fade this. I don't think it's mease. But it also can't be mooses. Mooses? So is it just one of those? It's just moose.
Starting point is 00:18:48 It's like moose and moose, I think. I usually say Mice anyway just because it's a bad dad joke, but it's, it's moose. Yeah, I think it's moose. So there's your moose update. The things you learn on this show. Shannon, are you excited that on July 21st, Jake Paul is going to box Mike Tyson? Yeah, I saw that this morning. So Tyson is 57 and Jake Paul is, what, 27, I think.
Starting point is 00:19:14 So it's a 30-year gap between the two. I still will take Mike Tyson if I had to put money on it. So here's that, okay, so who do you like? 30 year difference. Mike Tyson, though, was once one, you know, heavyweight champ, but Jake Paul's not some slouch. I mean, he can fight. Who do you like? I mean, let's assume it's real and it's not just like a gimmicky. Let's assume they actually fight. I may be completely wrong about this, but I think I saw a story a couple years ago how Tyson still is training, like as if he was a fighter.
Starting point is 00:19:44 Oh, it's insane. Like I've got a video right now I'm watching. That's what I thought. He's been training. He trains every day he is for a 57 year old probably in great shape so let's start with would you watch it probably Shannon yes absolutely I'm gonna watch it and I'm gonna bet on it because I already know who's gonna win who's gonna win I saw the video they're talking about earlier in the week they're gonna pick Jake Paul's head off that canvas Mike Tyson's punch is still a cannon okay but Jake Paul is 30 years I know you watch the video of present day Mike Tyson I'm gonna tweet this video to you right now
Starting point is 00:20:20 You tell me if you'd step in the ring with that guy. Well, first of all, the answer is I wouldn't step in the ring with anyone. Or do you think he would have a chance against a 27-year-old? I wouldn't step in the ring with Jake Paul. Okay, I mean, he would beat me. Like, they both would beat me up. But the question is, Mike Tyson. So you guys are all taking money.
Starting point is 00:20:37 It still looks like a shotgun. I would probably take Mike Tyson too because he was a great, like he knows technique and all the things. And I'm sure Jake, or whichever, Paul, Randman. Paul does too. I don't think it's Rand. I don't think Rand wants to fight him. Rand didn't even win in his yard, so I don't think he's going to... That's true.
Starting point is 00:20:58 I don't think he's going to take down Tyson. But I do... So do you think people will be excited to watch it? I think so. I mean, you know, Jake Paul's got the younger crowd, you know, the followers and now with we all know Tyson. And then Mike Tyson's got our age. That's right.
Starting point is 00:21:14 Yeah, I think a lot of people will tune in. I'm watching right now. I'm watching that video shit. Yeah. Oh my goodness. I'm not fighting that. He can still move. Oh, my goodness.
Starting point is 00:21:22 Yeah. I wouldn't even want to be the dude, the body spark. I'd be like, no, because if you miss one time, he still has it. And like you said, he's got that, the old man experienced knowledge. You know, he knows how to do things that, you know. Is there an argument, though, he'll get tired since he's old? Yeah, he probably needs an early knockout. My concern isn't endurance.
Starting point is 00:21:42 It's that this is a money grab, and he's going to take a dive for a big check or something. I don't know anything about his finances, but I hope it's not some desperate. let Jake Paul knock me out in front of everybody's situation. You wouldn't want to, like, have your legacy be in your last fight you lost to a YouTuber. I mean, there's been plenty of boxers doing that right now. They're not Mike Tyson, but they're desperate for money. Yeah, but Mike Tyson, I mean, Mike Tyson is legendary.
Starting point is 00:22:07 I mean, you wouldn't want, at the end of your life, do you think LeBron is going to let a YouTuber beat him one-on-one at the end? No, that competitive nature probably in a guy like Mike Tyson is not going to let him fail. I hope he's hungry and still crazy. Yeah, he doesn't move like a 57-year-old man. Not even close. No, he doesn't.
Starting point is 00:22:26 Who's next? Ruben. Ruben. Ruben. Ruben. Brown, rice, black beans, chicken. Leslie. What kind of bead you want, sir?
Starting point is 00:22:43 It's always the same. And I don't expect him to remember, but it's always brown rice, black beans. And immediately, he will have the scooper and white rice is coming in immediately. Go ahead. Hey, I was listening to yesterday's show, and the guy called in and talked about how Rob Dillingham's foot slides over the line on the free throw. Okay. Yes. Yeah, I was watching last night's game, and his first time at the line, he did it.
Starting point is 00:23:10 Okay, so she's exactly right. So I watched the first two free throws. On the first one, he didn't. But then on the second one, he did. His foot did go. Oh, but here's what I don't know is the rule. touch the line or over it. Because he touched the line, I didn't see him go over it.
Starting point is 00:23:29 It's got to be touch it. I thought it was touch it. You have to be behind that line. Yeah, and he did. You're exactly right. On the second free throw, he did touch it. On the first one, I don't think he did. Yeah, I googled it, and it said if it breaks the plane.
Starting point is 00:23:41 Okay. Yeah. So definitely break the plane. So it is something to watch for because if I was an opposing coach and I saw that, I'd tell the ref before the game. That's right. Hey, if he gets the line. even as he's walking up to the line,
Starting point is 00:23:55 you're telling that official, hey, watch him, he jumps over the line. And then it could also mess with his head if he gets called for it. But it didn't look to me like he jumps. It looked to me like he just shuffle. A little bounce.
Starting point is 00:24:06 It's like he just kind of shuffles. I don't think he can just shoot a shot. Like, even a wide open three, he kind of fades away. Like, I think he has to be a little off balance when he shoots.
Starting point is 00:24:18 He likes that. He's got to be a little shaky. Yeah. Well, I appreciate Leslie. I watch the same thing on those first set of free throws, and I found it interesting. It's amazing. It's not been called all season.
Starting point is 00:24:28 Not one time if they called that. By the way, if it gets called in an important game. Yep. That caller. That caller who brought it up. That's on you, man. Yep. Saturday in Knoxville.
Starting point is 00:24:42 That's on you. No one knew about it. I don't think there's one person that had noticed it but you. That's on you, and you'll have to live with that. Yes, sir. If it's a key play. at the end of a game. Or he got it on Kentucky's radar just in time
Starting point is 00:24:58 where they get it cleaned up and prevent it from happening. One person writes, Matt, Jake Paul is not going to risk his career to lose to Mike Tyson. But does it hurt his career if he loses to Mike Tyson? Name his boxing career right now. Yeah, I mean, like he's beating some, he's beating some, like, random person. But, I mean, again, if you're a YouTube,
Starting point is 00:25:17 like, if you're one of the YouTube basketball players losing the LeBron, does it hurt your career, does it? He's looking for views, not who wins the fight. Yeah. Well, I might watch it, and I wouldn't want to, but we'll take a break. We're right back. KSR. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney.
Starting point is 00:25:35 Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Matt Jones, Drew Franklin, and Ryan Lemon. And how exciting, Drew, to have this next guy with us on the phone. one of my maybe he's not my favorite he's right there one of my top three players of all time in terms of love and watch playing a great dude and now has a new podcast everybody join me john wall how are you doing john i'm great man how you doing good to hear from you good to hear from you man it's been a while how's everything you got your new podcast point game with eye heart and draft kings and it's cool seeing you doing your thing uh yeah it's fun man it's dope a lot of people
Starting point is 00:26:21 for a long time and actually to get on the podcast game and I finally came to the odds of doing it and I think I'm enjoying having fun at three episodes so far. And outside that, just being a dad, man, watching my kids grow, go to school, be activating in sports and just living a little bit. I watched, how many kids you have, John? Two boys. Two boys. Where are their names?
Starting point is 00:26:44 Five and three. All right. Wow. That's very cool. Can you believe, I mean, I remember this kid in high school in AAU and now you. And now he's out here. He's out here with kids. I watched the video of you and DeMarcus.
Starting point is 00:26:56 And I got to tell you, John, I mean, it made me so happy watching you two guys. What was it like to sit and do that to sort of, you know, think back at the memories of your time in Lexington? Oh, it's great, man. It's always amazing. Like, I always tell people, man, like, that was a lot of fun. I just wish I could have bought a championship there. You know what I mean? Like, that was my ultimate goal.
Starting point is 00:27:17 The way the fans was, the way they embraced us, the way we fell in love. with it and I always try to come back and support going to games, going at campus, just doing anything like that because it's a basketball talent and they really love you. And they give you that fun and make you feel like you're not in college. Like, we really enjoy it. You felt like rock stars. And for me, it's the best college to go to the best college to play for. I've always said that that was the most fun year that Drew and I've both talked about.
Starting point is 00:27:41 That's the most fun year we've had doing it was covering you guys. Did you feel like, I mean, Kentucky hadn't been good. Did you feel like it was just like you were on like a, on a, like a rock tour during that year? Yeah, man, I guess if you were like a rock star, I guess that's what it felt like. You know, we started off 18 and 0. I know like a couple years before that they wasn't too good.
Starting point is 00:28:01 It was kind of NIT a couple of times. And, you know, I mean, just a lot of young guys coming in, bringing some veteran guys back and then having a new coach coming in town. Like everybody was super excited to see what can go. And I think just to even to get to what we got to, like, you know what I mean, our ultimate goals won a championship. But just even to be to the street six to, I mean, to the lead aid.
Starting point is 00:28:18 It was amazing. You know what I mean? Like, we expected it, but like we were still young, still trying to learn, still trying to develop. Our first year of everybody trying to learn Cal's system, the fan base getting adjusted to Cal. And I think we put Kentucky back on the map to a level to where he's at now. Even though Cal only has one championship, but he's done so much great for the school and for the students. Everybody that came through there. Like, they have that peddust through.
Starting point is 00:28:40 Everybody wants to be there. And you got to talk to, I remember you talked to Barack Obama and you all let Demarcus be the one to talk. John, whose decision was that? I think that was just bull decision. You know what I mean? Like he was a bully, you know what I mean? Nobody was trying to get into a bully. So he was a bull made that decision.
Starting point is 00:28:58 You might remember there was a fan at South Carolina when they ran on the court who might have remembered he was a bully too, right? Yeah, I remember that we had just, I remember because we had just became, and then one player in the country. I mean, one team in the country. And South Carolina, Devin Downey, and the big man had a hell of a game, man. They beat us. And they stormed the court, you know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:29:17 And then we came back and beat South Carolina at home. We had just became them one that I remember was on them one for like a couple of days. Yes. Tell me about that moment at the SEC tournament. That's one of the great iconic moments in Kentucky history when you miss a shot. DeMarcus puts it back. The story is that you thought the game was over. I've always wondered, Cal always says that.
Starting point is 00:29:38 Did you think the game was over? No, hell no, I knew the game wasn't over. I knew you'd give you two points to go to overtime. Listen, if Cal is going to say I think the game was over, the whole team did, because everybody ran over the after me. So, like, I just wanted to, hey, I was just surprised we got the rebound, to be honest. So I didn't know how much time was left,
Starting point is 00:29:56 and I knew I didn't have a chance to really try to get to the basket. So I just got him, try to dribble to the three and make a shot. And it fell short, the market made the layup. But I knew we didn't win. I knew it was overtime, but I knew we had to get another bucket, though. That's exactly right. I always remember about that team. You know, you had these older guys.
Starting point is 00:30:14 Patrick, Ramon Harris was on that team, and then you had you guys. And that could have been a situation that could have been hard. You were taking some guys' jobs. Only a couple of those dudes actually ended up being able to play. Patrick did. I know Ramon played, but it was you. It's DeMarcus.
Starting point is 00:30:31 People forget Darnell Dodson played. Eric Bledsoe. How were you guys, like, able to make sure that chemistry worked with the guys that stayed on of you all? I think just cow, you know, I mean, cow coming in just like, I mean, not promising that to nobody. We all had to fight for our spots when we were. first got there. But I don't want to take all the credit, but I feel like me just coming in and being like, like, never one playing the country and being a point guard, I kind of just eased
Starting point is 00:30:57 into everybody, just like, yo, I'm here to make everybody better. Like, you know what I mean? Like, I'm not coming here and I feel like I'm better than all y'all and trying to take over everything. I just want to come in and just be a true point guard and lead my team. I think just everybody playing with me, knowing that they ran the floor, they got open. I was making the right playing fun of those guys. And I think this is how we built that chemistry and that commodity together. Kyle did a hell of a job, like, you know, be having a dinner nights. and stuff like that at his house, so everybody came over. We had opportunity to stay in the Wildcat Lodge, you know,
Starting point is 00:31:24 where you're around the guys a lot, playing video games, having lunch, breakfast, playing video games, playing arcade games, just doing that all together and being around each other. I think you just built that bond. I heard DeMarcus say that his year in Kentucky was the happiest he's been. I always think that's cool. What was the year like for you in that way? I think I agree the same, man.
Starting point is 00:31:45 I think that's the fun of that ever had playing basketball. You know what I mean? because you got to look at like, man, we're kids that probably never thought we'd be playing on a high D1 major school. Then be at one of the most prestige schools of all time in Kentucky, setting records doing things that we never thought of, and then being on TV every night, like being everybody's Super Bowl. It was just fun and excitement.
Starting point is 00:32:04 It was like you couldn't get that joy back. I remember my rookie in the league. We started off about winning too many games, you know what I mean? Like you go very high in the jab. You kind of won too many games. And we was kind of like rebuilding and starting over, you know, because we just going through stuff before. And I was like, damn, man, like, I wish I can go back to college and just get paid to play.
Starting point is 00:32:21 Yeah, what if there was NIL when you were here, John? What would that have been like? Well, you heard Cal, you heard Cal say I couldn't have came back because I was in the one picture. He wasn't letting me come back, no matter how much I would make NIA. But I think it would have been dope. You know what I mean? Like, it gives opportunity for a certain kids that might not have an opportunity to make it to the league or try to make a lot of money playing professionally and get an opportunity to take care of their family in the time being.
Starting point is 00:32:42 But also, it's a gift and a curse being that because sometimes kids will get the money and get the lifestyle too early and don't have no motivation. I want to make it to the NBA. But it's also a good thing to help some parents. There's some families that might need to help at the time. Yeah, that's true. Sometimes I'll get on TikTok and the public address announcer at your rookie game when they go, and from the University of Kentucky, John Wall, that shows up on,
Starting point is 00:33:09 I mean, that's a meme. It's like viral, that introduction. Do you like that? Oh, yeah, it's fun. Like for me, you know, like I was a kid coming in. And, I mean, rookie, nobody asked me without dance at the first game. I'm like, yeah, I ain't scared. Like, let's get it going.
Starting point is 00:33:25 I think I, I think I pooed that when I was at midnight madness. I mean, I got that high up and I started dancing. DeMarcus said you stole that from him. DeMarcus says you stole the dance. The markets don't really know how to dance. If you've seen them, you see, come on. You haven't seen this before game, free game dancing. I'm always the one leading the dance ring.
Starting point is 00:33:41 You were a better name to the name. I love DeMarcus, but he wasn't the best. But I was always the one leading the dance ring then. the market's on two but like i told everybody cal scared him and told him not to do nothing up there i was like shit i'm only going to be up here one time i'm enjoying myself and then on top of that books get a heights he is yes he is he is scared of heights let me ask you about this team right i mean you know this is a fun team to watch i'm sure you've watched them rob dillingham's got a little drew a job all in him a little bit what do you think of this girl you know way he's from no
Starting point is 00:34:13 He's from North Carolina. Yeah, Carolina, come on, man. Yeah. You know what we do. But you know the funny story, I said it on my podcast. I met Rob when he was like seventh, eighth grade, playing for Combine Academy for Jeff McGinnis team in Charlotte. And I was like, Dan, who was this young kid?
Starting point is 00:34:27 Like, he came in as a middle school kid playing against high school kids just not backing down there. He's not scared. And then, you know, I mean, I've been just falling Rob being real cool with him. You know, he went to OT and everybody was like, man, well, he dribble too much. He does. He does that. And I'm like, Cal, the perfect guy for him.
Starting point is 00:34:40 The same way, I used to dribble a lot and do extra moves, Caller. But listen, you can't score on one or two moves. We don't need you here. You're doing too much dribbling. And he kind of got into Rob. You see Rob don't play wild. I mean, he's aggressive. He's fearless.
Starting point is 00:34:52 But not just him. Like, DJ Radden, he's been playing well. Like, you know what I mean, playing through an injury that a lot of people probably don't know about finding his role because he's always been a score his whole life. And then they got him playing point guards. So he's in a different role environment. Reed Shepard's been excellent and amazing. I didn't know he was that good. I knew he was a Matt down with All-American.
Starting point is 00:35:08 Justin Edwards found his way. And Thore was doing his thing. You know what I mean? Just so many guys are clicking and doing well for them. Tony O'Reids can be an S.C. player the year, but not got to be right on. If you had Antonio Reeves on that 2010 team, you all beat West Virginia. He'd have made those threes. If I had him or have I had Jody Meeks for the came back.
Starting point is 00:35:25 Oh, what if Jody comes back? John, how did we not get Jody to come back that year? I don't know, man. We tried. I think he was promised a spot in the draft, and that's what he went with. So, you know what I mean? He's never going to stop nobody for chasing their dreams. But I think this team is special, man.
Starting point is 00:35:39 I think this is probably the best shoot. team that Coward has had completely. I think they have enough depth with Big Man. I think they have enough dealt with guards. My ultimate goal for them is just whatever it is before March start, just lock in on defense. Like that's the only thing they have ups and down. They have is a defense like we have.
Starting point is 00:35:55 But if they lock in on that, even if they're having nice and they're not making shots, they're too good offensively and it's too much firepower. They can find a way to get their stuff going. The podcast is called Point Game. It's with you and C.J. Toledano. Who is that? I don't know him, John. I just met him.
Starting point is 00:36:10 You know what I mean? I met him. I made him. I heart radio, I wanted to do a podcast, and I guess he was a guy that does a great job with him. And I enjoy him as my co-host. They asked him who he would want to do him with. And he said he chose me, and I was like, dope. Like, I feel like I love the podcast. Thank you. Something exciting for me to kind of tell my story. And just letting people know who I am and let him see another side of me.
Starting point is 00:36:30 Well, two of the first three episodes are John Calaparian to Marcus Cousins. And they are the most entertaining thing. I've said this to you before privately, but I'll say it publicly. I would not have a career if it was not for John Wall. Drew Franklin would not have a career if it's not for John Wall. Your year here was when we exploded. I will always be grateful and I, you know, love talking to you and always getting loved to catch up.
Starting point is 00:36:56 Well, I definitely appreciate that, man. Like, not even just that, man, for y'all just being there and, like, being able to cover us and talk about us and put us in that platform and spotlight. I definitely appreciate, you know, I mean, because it really wasn't on social media area at that time. Just imagine how that would have been, Matt. We had social media back to Instagram. Well, first of all, you wouldn't have needed me.
Starting point is 00:37:14 And secondly, I'd have been worried about DeMarcus having free access to the internet at that age. But, yeah, I definitely appreciate y'all, man. Like I said, I'm always happy to talk to y'all guys, happy to get back to Kentucky. It's just a place I always call home, man. You know, I got a Kentucky jersey tatted on me. A lot of people don't know that. Oh, you do?
Starting point is 00:37:32 I didn't know that. You have a Kentucky jersey tatded on you? So, like, I had my first basketball jersey when I played for the Boys and Girls Club, Then I have gone and a road bulldog, my first annual team. Then I have D1 sports, my second team. Then I have my high school jersey. Then I got Kentucky, then I got my Washington Wizards jersey. So, yeah, that means those jerseys meant something for me.
Starting point is 00:37:50 That's something that paid my way to be who I am today to reach my ultimate goal to play in college and then make it to the end day. So Kentucky was the root with the route. So there's always going to be loved there. Well, that is awesome. No bigger, no one, Ryan, you would agree. You've been doing this longer than me. No one was a bigger rock star than John Walwood. He is the definition of a UK basketball rock star.
Starting point is 00:38:11 John, Rex Chapman. It's it. Probably the two biggest that we've had here. John, thank you very much. Good luck with the podcast, and we'd love to have you again. Let me know when you're in Lexington. I appreciate it. Thanks, man.
Starting point is 00:38:23 You have a good day. There you go. What a great guy. Dude, that was awesome. That was a great interview. First time I think he's ever been on KSR. I think it is. And he was great.
Starting point is 00:38:31 Yes. The podcast is point game. Go subscribe to it to get that thing going, and it's very cool. We'll take a break. Come right back. It's Kentucky Sports Radio. To talk to Matt Jones and the crew, call the Clark's Pump and Shop phone line at 859-2807 or 1-800-606-4263. And send us the Kentucky branded tweet of the day by tweeting Matt at KY Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:38:58 Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. 859280-2287. If you're tired of buying expensive sunglasses only to lose or break them, what about Shady Ray? Shady Ray is an independent American-owned company right here in Korn. Kentucky, if you lose or break your shades on day one, they'll send you a brand new pair. No questions asked. Go to shady rays.com and I'm going to give you a great deal.
Starting point is 00:39:20 Code 50% off for two or more pairs. That's pretty amazing. Two pairs of sunglasses, 50% off. Just use the code KSR either online or go in store and say it at the summit or at Fritz Farm. Go see why Shadyrays are the best set of sunglasses. Maybe you're about to go on spring break. You can do it right there.
Starting point is 00:39:39 spring break or maybe even Phoenix for the final four. It's pretty sunny out there. Might need them then. Drew, why don't you explain what just happened right there during the break for people who couldn't see it? The folks in the restaurant did, but I don't think everybody else. A man walked in here with a suit and he had an earpiece and sunglasses. I thought we might be getting a president walking in at some point. Yeah, because he scoped the building.
Starting point is 00:40:01 I thought, honestly, for a second, thought Mitch McConnell might be coming in here. I'm dead serious because like when Mitch McConnell travels when we used to do television, vision. That's what it looks like when he would come in. I was like, is Mitch McConnell going to come in his bar? But that wasn't what happened. Oh, he sat down. Then a second gentleman came in, earpiece, suit, sunglasses, and I think, well, we're definitely getting a president. But then they just walk over and hand you an envelope and said, I think he said, Mr. Matthew Harper Jones, this is for you. I didn't hear him very well. The envelope says Matt H. Jones and Shannon, it was those two dudes from the wrestling, the guys that were
Starting point is 00:40:39 dressed up with the mayor in the wrestling mask i told you about it obbw yeah that's who it was and they dropped me off that said so remember if you didn't hear there was a guy at wrestling who was dressed like in a suit he had a wrestling mask on and he had like eight or nine people as security and like his wives and all this stuff here's what he writes me this is shannon with the pieces of paper with the cut out letters cut out of a magazine like a hostage like a hostage thing it says mr mayor is not the mayor of Lexington. He is, however, one of the 418 mayors in Kentucky. It is up to you to find out, welcome to the show, you're late. I like that. I love it. So does this mean the guy that came to wrestling is a mayor? It's really a mayor somewhere. That's what the note says. Or a mayor of
Starting point is 00:41:29 somewhere. It's clearly not Linda Gordon. We don't think so. What about the Somerset? I'm almost certain it's not Craig Greenberg. So now we're down to Alan Keck. It's Ryan's boy. he's kind of shaped like Alan Kek. Uh-huh. I don't know. But how about that? How about... That's bizarre.
Starting point is 00:41:46 We left out, Shannon. The bit, right? They delivered the note. It was in a briefcase. Put it on the table, open it up, and then handed him the note. They handed me that like you're handing something
Starting point is 00:41:59 when people are getting served. A lawsuit. That's how they handed me that. It was like Matthew H. Jones and handed it and then walked out. And that's it. The only words they said the whole time. You're going to sleep. with one I open tonight.
Starting point is 00:42:10 Change the locks. I give them credit for living. That's a lot of effort to put that note together, cutting those letters out of a magazine. Wow, that was something else. This is a crowded restaurant, and everyone was kind of confused, but he didn't break character.
Starting point is 00:42:24 Nope, he walked down. He did not. Draft Kings, let's see, I'm going to pick the game of the night. You can use the promo code KSR. Remember, they've got the $1,000, you know, no sweat bet. Game of the night, let's go to
Starting point is 00:42:37 two, two. Well, there ain't a lot of great ones. Let's go to the quarterfinal of the Barbasol Horizon League Championship. Who's playing in that one. Northern Kentucky plays Wright State. Yeah. Who you got? The fighting Darren Horns.
Starting point is 00:42:52 We're going to go with them for sure. Northern Kentucky. Marcus Warwick is their leading score from Henry Clay. We're going with them. What you got? Dang it, Ryan, you took the one player I can name in this game. Matt, I said it on Fade this. I nailed it.
Starting point is 00:43:04 I broke down Warren. Henry Clay, right? All-time leading score. All-time leading score. Henry Clay and now he's also, I think, all time-winning score at Northern Kentucky. He's all-conference. I know that much. So we've got to go with the Norse.
Starting point is 00:43:15 All right. Also, Murray State plays at 1 o'clock. The Kentucky women play at 2.30 against Tennessee. Yes. In the, I guess, technically the first round of the SEC tournament, not the play in. Any chance they pull off an upset today? Hey, there's magic at that SEC tournament when it comes to the SEC women, the UK women. You can hear the game on 630 WLA.
Starting point is 00:43:38 and 790 KRD also today. What you doing the probo? Shannon, who's next? Let's go to Sean from Austin. Sean, got about a minute. Go ahead. Yep, yeah. So the, I did a ride follows a historic trail, kind of like on the Appalachian Trail. So all the riders go on the same route. The reason why they got to pack out if they have an incursion with an animal is so that like grizzly bears and like Sasquatch and tools.
Starting point is 00:44:06 Oh, the bear might try to come. and eat the carcass or whatever. They might be the next person that comes down the trail. You don't want to have a bear. That makes perfect sense to me. That'll be my Kentucky branded moose explanation of the day. Go to Kentucky branded.com for your gear and moose needs. Thank you very much, John.
Starting point is 00:44:23 That's good stuff. That makes sense to me. Makes total sense. Don't want bears out on the course. Yeah. On the course. It's the same reason if you're playing golf and somebody dies, you have to skin them right there.
Starting point is 00:44:35 You don't. You leave the carcass on the fur. way. That's why Ricky Fowler has struggled in recent years. Is it? That's the reason we got kicked out of the regional tournament. Don Franklin. That was rude. You're an idiot. It's a game on Don Franklin's family of dealerships. Steer your way over to Don Franklin Auto.com, the largest inventory of new and used and certified pre-owned vehicles, 27 dealerships around the state. There's one near you. Check out Don Franklin Auto.com. Tell me where we are tomorrow. Appalachian Rose Farm and Rogers, Kentucky in their new greenhouse.
