Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headline. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:00 And for more, follow Timbo Slica Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the 4th. Ryan, there's so much to talk about. It's almost impossible to get to all of it. You know what I mean? Like there's so much going on. You had the SEC tournament and then you have the NCAA bracket. It's like it's just a ton of stuff happening. Yeah. The game against A&M is old news now because so much has happened since then on Friday night. That's exactly right. Now, a few things. First of all, we're going to do the contest that I talked about that everyone's excited about, Drew. Whoever wins our bracket challenge gets 30 minutes on KSR. All right. It gets 30 minutes to host the show.
Starting point is 00:03:34 Shaden thinks this is a great idea. Am I correct? That's right. Well, yeah, I thought originally was going to be the entire show. You're telling me 30 minutes. We can do that. We can do 30 minutes. So it's going to be on the KS bar bracket challenge.
Starting point is 00:03:48 I will tweet it out later tonight and we will put it up. But if you go to the KS bar, again, we're not the best at picking domain names, Drew. It's like KS bar dash, blog dash eat tournaments. Was KSR tournament already taken? I don't know. I don't know what it is, but I will make sure it gets out there, and you have until Thursday.
Starting point is 00:04:12 But Ryan, first of all, there are food prizes for various levels. You can end up free wings, free this, like you could end up eating at KS Bar for like a week if you win enough. But most importantly, you can end up being the 30-minute host this spring on Kentucky Sports Radio. I'm with Shannon. I like it that it's been cut to 30 minutes. I think that can be done. We'll be here to kind of hold their hand, help them through it.
Starting point is 00:04:37 No, no, you're going to have to host, though, if you do it. Because everybody talks such a big game, Drew. They're going to have to come through in this bracket challenge. Yeah, we'll chime in when we're called upon. But, I mean, they got to drive the show. We'll just be sitting in the seats next to them, wait until it's our turn to reply. I'm sitting in silence. No.
Starting point is 00:04:55 I can't sabotage it. You say you can do 30 minutes? You got to do 30 minutes? You can't lean on us. But maybe the person that wins is not somebody that has talked trash in, right? Maybe it's just somebody who wins. We'll go back through all the tweets. We'll find out who you are and see what you've said about it.
Starting point is 00:05:11 All right. So let me go over a couple things here. First of all, there was a comment that went viral online. I think it started on somebody's Twitter. I'm not sure the person where it started, but I saw it everywhere, which was that this official bluest whistle 22 times. during the game, and each time it was against Kentucky. That was the tweet.
Starting point is 00:05:35 Did you see that tweet, Ryan, at any point? Yes. I didn't count the whistles, but I did see the tweet. So first of all, I have not gone back and watched the game. So I have no idea what the actual numbers are. I did have a friend who sent it to me and said, is this right? And they said they were going to go back and watch.
Starting point is 00:05:54 They told me within the first like 10 minutes of the game, there were three whistles blown by the guy against A&M, including two fouls he called on A&M. I remember at least one or, because I know the guy, and I remember at least one or two fouls called against A&M. So I don't think the original tweet was correct. Now, whether the numbers were like way off on one team or the other, I can't say, I said on the post game show,
Starting point is 00:06:23 I do think the whistle went a little against Kentucky. I thought the Reeves push-off foul, which was a big call in the game. It was either was it his third drew or fourth foul where they called the push-off. On that push. That was a horrible call. It was a bad call. I don't know if it was the third or fourth. That was a bad and big call.
Starting point is 00:06:42 So I, but I didn't think it was egregious. Again, when you sit, so like there are advantages and disadvantages to being close to the court and being at home. At home, you guys get replay monitors. So, for instance, live, Ryan, I thought that goaltend on a do was not a goaltent. You remember? And I was like, why did they leave that as a goaltent? Apparently on replay, it was clear that it was a goal tent. But one of the things I think you can see better in person is how physical things are.
Starting point is 00:07:14 And I do think when it comes to physicality, we just let them beat us up. I also think, Ryan, down the stretch, they had two calls where they called fouls as Reeves was driving that weren't fouls that kept us in the game. When Reeves made those free throws, you know what I'm talking about? You and I were sitting right next to each other. He drove and got hit twice. Yes. And I didn't think either one of those was fouls.
Starting point is 00:07:39 I thought we were lucky to get those calls. So you can do that all game. On the whole, I didn't think the officiating was that bad, even though I think Texas A&M got the better end of the whistle. Do you agree or disagree? I agree with you. I do think a couple of fouls on Reeves were, really, really questionable.
Starting point is 00:07:58 But outside of that, we got as many calls as they did. Like you pointed out a couple right there, so it could have gone either way on those. It could have gone either way. But I also want to say, I don't know where the tweet originated about the 22 whistles,
Starting point is 00:08:13 blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I don't think that was true. I just don't. And I do think, like, before you just assume something's true, check and see. But I didn't go back and look at all of it. Maybe it was a lot more one or the other. But some of those calls, Shannon,
Starting point is 00:08:28 were like, the ball went out of bounds and he just pointed the other way. Like, you know, somebody's got to make that call, right? At some point. Yeah. Overall, the foul calls, until we started intentionally filing at the end, the foul calls were 22 to 17. Shannon, that's not a crazy
Starting point is 00:08:44 discrepancy. Yeah, I know a lot of people were blaming the officials. I feel like that's an easy out, but, you know, there were other things too. Like, Texas A&M could not miss. So it doesn't really matter at that point anyway. That probably has a bigger issue. And we couldn't guard, Drew, we could not stop the dribble ever. No, not at all. I saw the tweets and I haven't gone back and watched them, but when you lose the way Kentucky did, I just, I can't cry about the officials right now. I mean, Wade Taylor
Starting point is 00:09:11 and Radford, what are they, 55 points. I think they had even more than that when you played at A&M. If the officiating was horrible, it still didn't allow them to do, hit all those threes, go to the rim and score over Kentucky's bigs anytime they want it. It stinks that might have been a little lopsided, but Kentucky just got beat by Texas A&M in that game. Hey, Ryan, reset and come back, okay? You're a little bit on a delay. 859-28027.
Starting point is 00:09:36 Shannon, last night, I hosted the bracket show. Yeah. Okay. You got to give me a minute just to talk about it. Okay. You know how much I enjoy that, right? You know how cool that is for me. This was the first time I got to do it here at ESPN.
Starting point is 00:09:53 And I'm not kidding. it was one of the coolest things I've gotten to do. First of all, you're here at ESPN, Ryan, right? So like, you remember how I used to talk about the war room for the NFL? And all those guys would sit and watch the shows? The Big Ten Final, I go in to watch it. You got Jay Billis, Jay Williams, Seth Greenberg, Josh Passer. Like all the guys you see on TV, they're sitting in there watching it.
Starting point is 00:10:19 And all of them except one came up and talked to me. Shannon, you can probably guess which one wouldn't come talk. But everybody else was great. Then you're doing it sitting here. Okay, so they ended up not, Ryan, giving us the bracket 20 minutes early. Oh, real. See, the first time we've got to talk about this. The TV decided not to do it.
Starting point is 00:10:41 So we didn't happen. But here's what we did have. We had the raw feed from CBS coming in. So that feed comes out about two minutes before you see it. Okay. So I had like a two minute head start. And Shannon, I didn't know it was a two minute head start. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:01 So I would just say it as it would come on the raw feed. But here's what that meant. We were saying it ahead of the TV. Oh. So if you were listening and watching both, Drew, you would have actually heard it from me before it popped up on the TV. because it took two, I guess it took two minutes from when they said it to get out. Does that make sense?
Starting point is 00:11:25 It does. I like hearing this behind the scenes too. Did you ever consider doing an emoji? Well, I didn't have it. And then also I had somebody kind of tell me they know you're looking at maybe emojis. See, it got out. I shouldn't have said anything about it, right? You don't want to lose that opportunity for next year because of a stupid tweet?
Starting point is 00:11:43 Listen, the brackets are my favorite thing. Like, they're my favorite thing. to get to do it like it's like a dream come true. And then, so after the brackets come out, you get, we interviewed Matt Painter, Rick Barnes, Kelvin Sampson, Ryan, I got to put the selection committee chair under the hot seat, right? Ask him questions. It was an awesome night. And as I drove home when it was over, I was like, you know, when I was a kid at Middlesbrough,
Starting point is 00:12:12 thinking I would ever get to do that is absolutely crazy. What in your mind was the biggest controversy that you did? talked to the selection chair about. The big, apparently the Big East was really mad they didn't get teams in. So like Providence coach said it was BS, except he said the actual word. So we had to bleep it out. Rick Petino was mad. Seaton Hall was mad.
Starting point is 00:12:35 So the big thing, Ryan, was the Big East was mad that the net, they were all high in the net, that they didn't use the net. And they were very upset about the net. Well, we were all happy for you. I'm very proud of you. I really was kind of secretly hoping you got that bracket 20 minutes early, just kind of revel in that. They wouldn't give it to me.
Starting point is 00:12:52 TV said the radio, the direct quote was, Drew, radio doesn't need it early. They don't have to make graphics. But you still have to be prepared to present that the best form possible to your audience. It's utter chaos. It's a different medium. It's utter chaos. When it was over,
Starting point is 00:13:09 Myron said that's the hardest thing I've ever seen. It's utter chaos. Shannon, imagine there's a television with it coming up. Yeah. You are trying to entertain people nationally while telling them what's on the television and writing it down, not missing anything and trying to allow Myron to speak. And that combination, it's madness. It is madness. It is the hardest 45 minutes of radio I do in a year.
Starting point is 00:13:37 Is that 6 p.m. to 6.45, it is complete madness when it's happening. It's wild that you actually have to follow along on TV and you don't. have that in front of you because if you don't like if you miss something you just miss it. What do you say on the radio? Well I luckily didn't miss it. The timing worked out. And again, Shannon, you know this about radio. There's hard breaks. Right. So I have to hit a hard break. I'm trying to do it without hitting the hard break. But also then they have sound. They want me to throw to. They go, in the South region. And you have to do that. And there's all this stuff. There are live reads that have to take place while the bracket is coming out. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:14:15 And all that's going on, and you can see Myron on the computer going, let me talk, let me talk. You know, there's like all this stuff happening, and it's complete chaos. But I enjoy it, but it's chaos. Well, were you literally writing them down again? Did you have to write them down? I have this sheet of paper. Actually, I tell you what, I will tweet out the notes I took live, Shannon.
Starting point is 00:14:36 It looks like you think my writing's bad. You ought to see the notes while I'm trying to write it down live. but that's that's what you do but i will say it's a lot it was a lot of fun and i hope to get to do it again it's very very cool who's next let's go to joe joe what's up joe uh thank you matt very happy with our nc w a d'uad draw but i i want to go back and just briefly talk about the five times we play zone defense against a and m three times we were very successful man but unfortunately we couldn't go down and get a basket on any of those three possessions and then see the last two and Cal's substituted, then we give up two open three.
Starting point is 00:15:18 He's pretty much game over. But at least for three times, he was successful on his own defense. So do you see him playing any zone defense in the NCAA tournament? Or you think it's just he just had enough of it. I mean, I think he'll do what he did there, play it for a few possessions. I did think, and I agree with you. I agree with you. I appreciate the call.
Starting point is 00:15:36 I thought Drew, the five zone possessions were some of the keys of the game. We got three stops, but we couldn't come down and score. And then he's exactly right. We brought in two subs, got lost on the zone, and they hit threes. I think if we hadn't had the subs and we kept playing zone, we had found something there, but then it just didn't work. And then when we stopped them, we could not convert during that period. If you remember, when we came down after those, Reeves missed an open three,
Starting point is 00:16:07 Shepard missed an open three. I think a do miss a layup. Like it was a great chance to close the gap and we just weren't able to do. it. It was, especially with the way A&M was just taking it to Kentucky until they went to a zone. And then we saw it get a couple stops. You thought maybe there is something there, but it completely disappeared. And now Cal is talking about tweaking. We're going to seven footers. So we might be finding a new tweak that's not going back to that zone. Yeah, we got to. We will see a lot of zone with Oakland. They're a zone team.
Starting point is 00:16:35 Ted, that's what I was going to say. They play, Oakland plays almost exclusively zone. And I don't think that works against Kentucky, but we'll find out because they will play zone throughout the game on Thursday. If you're always on the go running, hitting the gym, practicing yoga, whatever, go to court physical therapy. They want to make sure you do not have pain. Court can help you with your pain. If you go to court.com over 75 locations, there's one near you. Visit court.com. That's k-o-r-t.com.
Starting point is 00:17:08 We'll take a break. Be right back. Kentucky Sports Radio. This will be the Whiskey Thief Song of the Day, because it sure is Monday. You can go to Whiskey Thief Bourbon. We've done remotes there, but yes, Whiskey Thief Song of the Day, it sure is Monday. Yes, it is. But it was a fun Sunday for me.
Starting point is 00:17:25 Less fun Friday. One person writes, Matt, the ghost of rooferies now keeps you from criticizing referees. First of all, I'm just going to say this to all of you that say that stuff to me. only one of us has ever been sued by a referee actually two because Drew has two so Shannon I will take my referee criticism over anybody how many people had to pay legal fees for criticizing a referee how many people went to the Sixth Circuit and got a First Amendment right Shannon to criticize a referee not me not Ryan you and Drew and Drew
Starting point is 00:18:02 how many people had their worst photo on Sports Center That's right. The Sixth Circuit said you have a God-given First Amendment right to criticize referees. Thanks to Drew Franklin and I. So I don't want to hear anybody say I won't criticize a referee. There had never been a case in the history of the United States that said you can criticize referees. And Drew and I took that to the Sixth Circuit and won it. So don't you say to me I'm scared to criticize referees. I also think if you cry wolf and say referees are always out to get us when they're not,
Starting point is 00:18:41 then when they are and you have something egregious like you did in 2017, then you look like the boy who cried wolf, Ryan. So I think you have to be careful. We were never closer than five points against A&M. Were there bad calls? Yes. But this isn't a roofery situation against North Carolina. this was a push-off call that I didn't think was a push-off.
Starting point is 00:19:07 You have to be careful before you start saying everybody's cheating. But I'll put my criticism of referees and the amount of legal fees we paid out to have a right to criticize referees. Ryan, I'll put that up against anybody. Fighting a good fight. We appreciate that. What about the – I don't know. And how many games has that referee done against Kentucky since then, Shannon? Zero.
Starting point is 00:19:31 Zero. Yeah. And probably never will. He's retired, so he won't. There's another tweet out there that says every game that Antonio Reeves has fouled out this year, that guy was refereeing that game. Okay, and that's weird. That is odd. I admit that's an odd statistic.
Starting point is 00:19:51 But he also has refereed a game where he didn't, right? He refereed the game we lost to Wilmington. Do you remember thinking there were egregious calls in the Wilmington game? No, I do not. Shannon, do you think, do you remember that? No, no. We lost to Wilmington. When you're complaining at home about referees against Wilmington, Drew, that's a you problem.
Starting point is 00:20:14 Not in us, right? Last year we lost to them in the, I think he refereed the game in the SEC tournament. We lost to Vandy. What were we doing losing to Vandy to begin with? Yeah, that's part of the reason, even if it was bad Friday, and I don't think it was that bad. I don't want to be a Kentucky fan making excuses for my team when in a couple of days we're about to find out what they're made of. I feel like everyone online breaking down these videos and stuff, I mean, what are we accomplishing? We've moved on from that as a loss.
Starting point is 00:20:46 It sucked. A&M whooped us, but now the real tournaments here and we've hit Rood Group and let's go try to win six games in the world. In 2017, we were the second best team in the country. We played the first best team in the country. We lost by one point in a game that went back and forth and that came down to a play here. play there. We were down 16 in this game in the second half, Ryan. That's not the same thing. It's just not. No, we were sitting beside each other and we both knew that there was, that game was over early. I just knew Kentucky was not going to be able to come back and win this game.
Starting point is 00:21:21 We were down 16, I want to say, with like seven or eight minutes to go. And then Rob went on a little run and cut it to eight. But no, I do not believe we lost. We lost. that game because of a fish yet. If you want to believe that, that's totally fine, but I would respectfully disagree. Who's next? Xerxes. Zerxes. Talk about a sad guy. I saw Xerxes Friday night. How are you doing today? I'm doing much better, Matt. Great seeing you and Ryan. After the game, it helped to talk it out, but I'm ecstatic over this region we have. But here's what I like to say.
Starting point is 00:21:58 I went back and rewatch the game, and I know Reed said the guys were playing selfish. I think that also accounts for on defense. A dude gambles too much. He tries to make a home run play on defense. And all we have to do is just stay on our men. Do not help. Please, just stay with your guy. You get beat off the dribble.
Starting point is 00:22:21 Let Hugo or Big C or whoever's back there protect the rim. Stay with your guy. he left the three point three point guy open too many times stay with you guy I'll live with the results stay with you guys that's all I got appreciate the call Drew I had somebody tell me again I haven't watched the game that they made seven threes off of drives
Starting point is 00:22:41 help defense kick out to an open shooter I could believe it and some of it is Kentucky will be playing great defense and the other team will just wait and wait because Kentucky can't seem to do it for a full 30 seconds and once they can figure that out and they don't have a lot of time to figure that out. But if they will, I think they can do it.
Starting point is 00:22:59 Some of it, I mean, read with the gambling. I need Reed to gamble a little bit because that's when he makes his good plays. But you can't just completely leave a great shooter wide open like he's done in games. I like this question. It's going to be my Kentucky-branded question of the day. For some reason, Matt, Shannon cracks me up when you mention teams or places. Mention all the teams and places playing in Pittsburgh and just get Shannon's reaction to the team. All right, are you ready?
Starting point is 00:23:24 These are the teams that Drew and I will see in Pittsburgh. Kentucky, Kentucky. Great team has a chance to make the final four. Oakland. Oakland Athletics from California. Probably my favorite American League team. I love them. All right.
Starting point is 00:23:41 I didn't expect that answer. Texas Tech. I hate Texas all together. So I don't really have any strong. You hate Texas altogether. I don't like the state. They say things bigger in Texas. I think Texas.
Starting point is 00:23:54 Texas sucks. NC State. Surprising team from the ACCC that could give Kentucky some trouble if they face them in the second round. South Carolina. Worst seven seed in the history of the NCAA tournament. I don't even want to hear it. That was the year they made the final for you, jerk. Oregon.
Starting point is 00:24:18 Team no ducks. I like that, actually. Creighton. Team that has no chance of winning the title, although everybody else, the talking heads seem to think that they will have a chance. The dorks love Creighton, don't they? That's exactly right.
Starting point is 00:24:32 And finally, Akron, 14-seated Akron. LeBron James. That's what you think of LeBron, right? So those are the teams that Drew and I will get to see in person in Pittsburgh on Thursday. Got about 30 seconds here before we hit the break. I understand. But you, you know.
Starting point is 00:24:48 I hope we don't go to Dallas. Well, we'll have to go to Dallas, won't we? I guess there's no choice. I hope we go to Dallas. You better hope we go to Dallas. If we don't go to Dallas, we're going home. What are you talking about? I mean, I don't want to go to Dallas because I hate Dallas. Guess what? You're going to Dallas and you're going to like it. 859-2-8027. Text machine, 772-7-7-4. We'll take a break. Be right back. KSR. Welcome back. It is, I'll tell you sports radio.
Starting point is 00:25:16 859-28027. Dallas, hopefully here we come. But first is Pittsburgh. I tweeted this out. If anybody has friends in Pittsburgh that have a sports bar, I'd love to have Drew like a KSR sort of locale for us while we are there to watch the games and also maybe to do our pre and post game shows, etc. So if anybody has one, let me know. And I'll kind of advertise it to the Kentucky fans closer to the arena, the better.
Starting point is 00:25:44 I hear the area around the arena is not the like best area in Pittsburgh. I mean, it's not like unsafe, but just not a ton of stuff. But either way, we'd love to, Drew, have a place to kind of set up shop and watch basketball because you and I are going to be there for a number of days in a row. Yeah, I'm looking forward to that Friday after we hopefully have a win behind us. I can just sit there and watch games all day. If we don't get any suggestions, I still remember that pizza place where Ryan's sprayed on hair left a mark on the wall. I think we actually claim those seats by Ryan doing that so we can just go back there.
Starting point is 00:26:17 Yes, there is the place where I showed you all. how good I am with little kids in terms of being able to play with them and take care. Like you were impressed, weren't you, Ryan? Yeah, that was the same little pizza place where you are playing with those kids and my hair got rubbed up against the wall. But you remember after that we went to a bar and we got into an elevator to go to the bar and there was like four women stood behind me and they saw my hair and just started laughing. They laughed at your sprayed in bald spot.
Starting point is 00:26:47 Shannon, I love that. They're going to be laughing at anything, Ryan. They weren't laughing at the guy with the spray-painted bald spot in front of them. I think they were laughing at it. It's a young, trendy club kind of plays, too. I'm pretty sure. That was right. It was a club.
Starting point is 00:27:00 We shouldn't have been going into the club. People get air dropping us stuff too in that bar, if you remember. Oh, that's right. Yes. I think they were airdropping. They saw the bald spot and we're like. I was like, I don't want to see this. Western Kentucky made the tournament.
Starting point is 00:27:14 They opened up against Marquette. Ryan, they might open the field up for us. just not Marquette out. Congratulations to the Toppers. First time since 2013 that they've got in the field. Dante Allen going to be dancing with the Topper. So yeah, let's go pull for them to be Marquette. Get them out of the way for us.
Starting point is 00:27:31 By the way, there's a couple sleeper picks I like, Drew. I like Samford to beat Kansas and I like Charleston to beat Alabama. Those are two I like in the early round. Well, then I'll just go ahead and give my sleeper pick. You've got a hot 15 seed in St. Peter's playing another number, another number two from the SEC. So what if they did it again? What if they did it again, Shannon?
Starting point is 00:27:53 St. Peters take out a two seed in the SEC. Tennessee plays the way they did in the SEC tournament. They will be out early in the NCAA tournament. I also like the story of Long Beach State. They fired their coach on Monday and then went on a miracle run to win their conference tournament, Ryan, and the fired coach is coaching them in the NCAA tournament. He already knows he's been fired and he's still coaching. him and they won.
Starting point is 00:28:18 They decided to let him fight to fire him, but let him finish the year. Oh my God. Oh, I didn't know this. Dan Monson. Dan Monson was the guy who created the Gonzaga program, basically. He was the dude that took Gonzaga on their initial runs back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Then he went and took the Minnesota job.
Starting point is 00:28:39 It did not work out. Now he's at Long Beach State. They play Arizona in the first round. He was fired on Monday, but they let him finish. the year and coach the team and Drew now they win the conference tournament and he's going to the NCAA tournament even though he's fired.
Starting point is 00:28:55 It's my second favorite team in the field because I want them to have to offer him an extension after firing him if they go on a long run after winning the conference. Just win one game though. You're the 16. That's what I say. Think about he's a 15. Think about the fact that he has not, Shannon.
Starting point is 00:29:11 Long Beach State has not been to the tournament in like 15 years. He takes them to the tournament and now he's fired. Like the whole point of having the guys as a coach is to go to the tournament, he's done it. How can you fire him? Especially if he wins just this first game. They'd
Starting point is 00:29:27 have to keep him. They'd have to. Yes, they would have to. That would be the biggest win in program history, I would imagine. I don't know their history, but I don't think there would be anything bigger than that. Ryan, do you think they have to keep him if he ends up winning a game? I think the athletic director needs to be in his office right now
Starting point is 00:29:43 with a box of chocolates, begging for forgiveness and begging him to stay. please don't leave i was just kidding i'm just kidding coach we want you here they should fire the athletic director yeah like what a what a dummy yeah if he beats arizona he should go to that press conference and say uh y'all can't afford me anymore yes i'm out that's exactly right you know what i'm going i'm going somewhere else kind of an amazing story that you kind of you only get in the nca tournament you get stories um like that i also like drew our friends at pardon my take you know, Big Cat went to Wisconsin. PFT went to James Madison. They drew each other in the first round of the tournament.
Starting point is 00:30:24 James Madison has not made the tournament, like, I think ever, at least in like 20 some years, and they play each other in the first round. I think that's kind of, it would be like trancy drawing Kentucky Wesleyan in the NCAA tournament or something like that. Because that's our region, I've looked at that match up 20 times since it came out, and this is the first time that that hit me, that's a Big Cat and PFT. That is an interesting twist for their show, and I'm sure they'll have lots of fun with that one. So that is a lot of, I think the tournament does a lot of stuff. You know, Ryan thinks it's all rigged anyway. So, you know. One close one to watch is the 8-9 Mississippi State, Michigan State with North Carolina next. I mean, you got Izzo who didn't have a great year, but can always make a run. And I think Mississippi State could put a five-y-state. I agree with you. Could be a
Starting point is 00:31:09 dangerous eight-seed sitting there. And then one more thing, Shannon, Nebraska. Nebraska, Nebraska, an 8-seat place our Texas A&M as the 9th seed. Nebraska, Shannon, is the only Power 5 school in America that's never won an NCAA tournament game. Yeah, I saw that. Nebraska's never won. They have a chance as an 8-seat this year to finally get a victory. We can't have that first victory for them be over in SEC school, the one that just beat Kentucky in the SEC tournament. So hopefully they're 0-and-6 after this year.
Starting point is 00:31:38 Kind of amazing, though. Never won an NCAA tournament game, even though they've been Power 5 since the beginning, they got a chance to win their first one. Who's next, Shaddy? Scotty. Scottie, go ahead, Scotty. Hey, Matt, I'm excited about the tournament this year, but I really got to get something off my chest. I'm just sick and tired of the measure of a successful season at Kentucky being how many draft picks you have in the NBA. Over the past few years, honestly, I could care less about the NBA. I want these guys to succeed, but I'm a Kentucky fan. I want to see results at Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:32:17 I don't want to see results after they leave Kentucky or before. I want to see results here and now. And we just haven't been living up to that in the past few years. And honestly, I'm just tired of hearing and being pushed down your throat about, oh, we've got this draft picked and this guy's doing this. But they're not doing anything with it at Kentucky. And that frustrates me as a fan. In the first eight years or so, sir, I mean, the thing was he had all those draft picks,
Starting point is 00:32:43 but they also won here, right? Like, I mean, so it was, you know, from 2010 to 2018-19, they had all those draft picks, and it did equate to success here. At that point, when it equated to success here as well, were you excited when they went in the draft? Well, like I said, you know, I'm not huge into the NBA and more college,
Starting point is 00:33:05 but yeah, I mean, I was excited for those guys, but they produced here at Kentucky. What's changed since 29? I mean, I mean, that's a whole other conversation. I appreciate the call. But I, you know, I think we've underperformed. But this is a year where you can get a lot of that back. You know, you've got the bracket.
Starting point is 00:33:29 You've got the talent. You've said all year you're built for March. Now it's just a matter of going and actually doing it. Ryan, tell me about Stock to Mortgage. Stock to Mortgage. Are you shopping for a new home? this spring declining inflation and the steady job market may mean it's time for you to consider taking your home buying plans off old if you're shopping you need someone knowledgeable and
Starting point is 00:33:51 trustworthy you can partner with talk to the team at stockton mortgage you want to go into this home buying season with that pre-qualification letter in hand at stockton you can get pre-qualified in about 24 hours it's easy to apply online at stockton dot com stockton mortgage nmLS a 259 equal housing lender we will take a break and come back for a final segment here I gotucky sports radio. I love this song, even though it's just him mentioning cities. Yeah, it's awesome, though. It is.
Starting point is 00:34:18 He threw Pittsburgh in there. Sue City, something city, Dodge City. What a pity. I love it. I love it. It's such a great song. It makes me very happy. Hey, the La Familia and BBN NIL fund.
Starting point is 00:34:34 You can sign up. It's all Team NIL for Kentucky basketball. Now is as good a time as any going. into the tournament. The Law Familia Fund is spotfund.com slash lawfamilia. Spotfund.com slash law familiar. Donate anything you want, anything you can. It will help, but also get crowd involved. If you donate, you're part of a list where you'll get to have special events. It's spotfund.com slash law familiar. That men's basketball only NIL. It's men's basketball only in aisle. spotfund.com slash law familiar.
Starting point is 00:35:10 I have a story I think you'll like, Shannon, about your boy, Joe Lannardi. You've been critical of Joe Lannardi over the years, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. You don't think that's a real job he has. Well, I mean, if he gets paid for it, good on him, but yeah, it's not. So he walked into the radio studio last night, and I'd never met him in person. You know, he's been on shows, especially my old TV show, but he'd never, I'd never been in person with it.
Starting point is 00:35:33 And he sat down and I said, hi, hi, he was nice to meet him. And I go, and we're in the break. hey man, you know, is today like a nerve-wracking day? Because Shannon, if he's way wrong, that's bad for him, right? Right. It's his Super Bowl. And he goes, this is the most nervous day of my life every year. Yeah. And think about that for a second.
Starting point is 00:35:54 Like you have one job to the general public. And it's getting the bracket right. And he did a pretty good job. He got 67 of 68 teams. And in the top 16 seeds, he had all 16 of the teams. He got one Kentucky and Auburn where the only two things he got screwed up. He had Kentucky and Auburn flipped. Otherwise, he had it exactly right.
Starting point is 00:36:16 That's solid. That's pretty good. Yeah. But can you imagine sitting there watching the bracket going, if they did differently than me, I stake, right? And you don't know what they're going to weigh heavily more so than the other. And you don't really know what they're going to do because they're just regular human beings. Your credibility is on the line, you know, because everybody watches the bracketology leading up to it. I just never really thought about it.
Starting point is 00:36:38 So then later on I go back to my hotel and, Drew, I'm sitting at the hotel bar. I haven't eaten all day. And I sit and I look and the NIT selection show is on. Now, you have to be a certain kind of guy, Drew, to watch the NIT selection show, right? But I watched it. I watched it. And all of a sudden I hear, yes. And I look over and Joe Lannardi is screaming because St. Joseph's, his team has made
Starting point is 00:37:06 the NIT. He let out this loud scream because he was like, we didn't think we were going to make it. And to be as excited as he was about the NIT, I thought this dude really loves college basketball. Sounds like Joe had a heck of a day if on his most nerve-wracking day of the year. He had a great track record, only missing one. And then his alma mater gets a ticket into the little dance.
Starting point is 00:37:33 It sounded like Joe might order a little piece of cake at the hotel bar. I think maybe he would. Maybe he was, Ryan excited. I think maybe he celebrated a little bit. It was a Joe Lannardi great night. For a guy that nearly picked every single team in the NCAA tournament, he was a fan. He fanboated at that moment when St. Joseph makes the NIT.
Starting point is 00:37:50 It's kind of a great little story he just told. I did say to him, I was like, dude, that shows me that you are legit about this stuff. A dude who will scream out a visceral scream when his team makes Shannon the NIT. That's a guy who loves college. He loves it and he'll have a bracket out for next year, I'm sure, by the end of April. He will. And he was, you know, for all the criticism of him, if you followed his bracket, he had 67 and 68 teams. His last bracketology, Shannon said, if I'm wrong, it will be because Virginia makes it instead
Starting point is 00:38:23 of Oklahoma. And that's what happened. That's what happened, yeah. And he had the top 16 seeds exactly right. Ryan, he had him in the exact right place, except he just had Kentucky and Auburn flipped. So, you know, obviously he knew about these three Big East teams you were talking about. It was kind of the big controversy. He didn't have them in the field either.
Starting point is 00:38:41 He didn't have them in the whole time. The only thing he had is he had Oklahoma instead of Virginia. Wow. That's why he's got a job. That's why he makes all that money. So for all the criticism, he's pretty on it if he, at the end of the day. Who's next? Wendell.
Starting point is 00:38:56 Wendell. How are you, Wendell? I'm doing good. I just want to throw a little Oakland tidbits out to you. The first year of basketball up there was in the mid-1960s, and the first coach was a Moorhead State grad named Dick Robinson. Okay. Who went on to, he only coached there one year, then went on to be president of the National JCs. And eventually came back and worked for John W. Brown administration. When you say National JCs, what do you mean?
Starting point is 00:39:30 That's the old junior Chamber of Commerce group I think they're kind of gone by the wayside but at that time they were really an influential group All right What's your other fact?
Starting point is 00:39:46 He went on to I think he was the developer of the Joe B and Denny's show Yep Well how about that? Is that right Ryan? I guess Yeah Yeah Good good guy
Starting point is 00:39:58 He passed away just not too long ago but a very influential guy here in Lexington for a long time, but I didn't know the backstory about him being a coach at Oakland. Well, there you go. I had no idea. He started. And one other coach at Oakland, he was either the third or fourth coach at Oakland,
Starting point is 00:40:16 was Ronnie Lyons High School coach, Jim Mitchell. Look at this. Look at all these Oakland things. I appreciate the call, Wendell. So it wasn't just, Drew. It's not just that they have the kids that get tattoos. they also have some history with the state of Kentucky. They do.
Starting point is 00:40:33 So much to know about Oakland. I love Fade this. We kind of made Oakland one of our darling teams last week talking about those students. And then as I said earlier in the show, it's not that Kentucky connection. But 40 years at one school for a coach, that's a pretty legendary run they've got there. So I'm, you know, it's an ideal opponent for Kentucky, but they have some good things going there. And also he and Cal are friends. So we're going to have to learn.
Starting point is 00:40:56 I mentioned that right away last night. I'm going to give you a. assignment before tomorrow's show. What do you got? You just find me some facts about Oakland, either the university, the town it's in. You give us a little Oakland background. How's that? I can handle that.
Starting point is 00:41:11 I feel like that's normally what we have Billy do on Fade This, but you're kind of this show's Billy. I'm just kidding. I just wanted you, I just wanted you to get frustrated. Who's next? Freebird. Freebird. How are you?
Starting point is 00:41:27 Hey, guys. How do we doing? A couple of things. First of all, Matt, I'm enjoying Mr. Pib Zero for the first time. It's good, isn't it? Yes, it is. And I think it's awesome what you, and I think Drew did to the Court of Appeals. I think that it's fantastic, man.
Starting point is 00:41:48 Well, I appreciate it. When you yell at referees, you just remember Drew gave you the ability to do it as we went to the Sixth Circuit. I walked so you could run. Well, thank you very much. I appreciate it. That opinion, if you ever get bored, Higgins v. Jones and KSR, you can look it up right now. If you remember, the judge drew took a lot of enjoyment out of making sports metaphors throughout the opinion. That's what really made it special is all the great puns.
Starting point is 00:42:23 And he couldn't just do it. He had to make it all about basketball. Yes, he made all these puns. But he said, well, first of all, he made clear that we didn't tell anyone to harass anyone. As a matter of fact, we said the exact opposite. And so a lot of the facts, including facts that were written in Sports Illustrated, were false. But he also noted that I think he said the right to criticize the referee is as old as time itself, Ryan. That was his quote.
Starting point is 00:42:53 I believe him, trust him, live by those words. All right, well, good. To Ryan. I don't even know. Ryan was he, he wasn't paying attention, was he? Maybe he just doesn't want to get dragged into that situation. It's towards the end of the show. He sees the lunch there at KS.
Starting point is 00:43:08 Bar. He's getting hungry. I thought you were going to make me read that opinion. That's what I thought was coming like, oh, no. Oh, you never read it? No. I had never read an opinion ever. Thank you very much. Cornbreadhymp.com.
Starting point is 00:43:21 The promo code is KSR. Full Spectrum Flower Only Hemp, CBD Gummies. I got home from doing the Bracket Show did the cornbread hemp. Yeah, Martin's Barbecue for the NCAA marathon shows that IHeart does every year.
Starting point is 00:43:57 They will be in Louisville at Martin's Barbecue. I'll be in New York. Wednesday, I'll be in Pittsburgh. They'll be at KS. Bar for the start of the Sweet 16. Ryan will be at KS. Bar all week, watching games. Shannon's coming up on Friday. For those of you asking about Thursday, no, we do not do reservations for the UK game or the games. You just got to get there. You can get there all day.
Starting point is 00:44:21 It'll be crowded all day with the Sweet 16 and NCAA tournament, but we do not do reservations and then we will be in Pittsburgh, Drew and I, Thursday, Friday for all the events for the NCAA tournament.
