Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.

This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headlines. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves. Their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear.

Starting point is 00:03:01 Ryan, before I want to talk about Boogie and Rondo and U of L, but before we do that, you weren't here yesterday. So were you surprised at all that has gone down in the last few days? I mean, you weren't here to kind of go through it with us this weekend and yesterday. It was like, you know, it was happening in real time. We thought that meeting with Mitch was going to be yesterday. And then he gets on his show last night. I said, no, we're actually trying to meet today. Is he actually even in Kentucky yet to meet with Mitch yet today?
Starting point is 00:03:28 You know, I don't know. but I do have one question for you. Okay. We get him taking over, Shannon. He's got questions now. That's right. It's the Ryan Lemon show. It's okay.
Starting point is 00:03:39 Go for it. He missed yesterday. Yeah, he's got things to say. Okay. And I won't cut you off with the hard out if you don't get. Oh, how about the hard out? The hard out, just for the record, for those of you over the ears that have been cut off, the hard out waits for no man.
Starting point is 00:03:54 Nobody. No man. It's not the first time that's happened to Caliper either on his own show. That's happened before. But the hard out waits for no man. When it comes, you're gone. Tom said 10 seconds, and Shannon likes some of our callers, it made him slow down. And it made him go even slower.
Starting point is 00:04:11 So I did think that was really funny. Crash into the show. Assuming now that Cal is coming back and being the show, what does that mean for you and your relationship with him going forward? Well, I mean, I'm going to cheer for him just. like I did this year. I mean, Drew can tell you during the Oakland game, I'm sitting there pumping my fist. We were nervous wreck. I was sitting next to one of the assistant coaches for one of the teams playing the next game. And he was laughing at me, how into it I was. So I'm going to be doing the same way. You know, it's going to be awkward. I don't know if it's going to be any more awkward
Starting point is 00:04:52 than it was now. Look, I hate the position. I hate the position this is in. A guy posted a video, A guy posted a video of me and Cal at that at that luncheon in Louisville, like seven or eight years ago, you were on stage too. That was great. And it was great. And I hate that it's not like that. I really do. Because he and I have had, I was talking to somebody else who's kind of been like pushed away. And I was talking to them yesterday.
Starting point is 00:05:23 And I was like, man, there are so many like great memories I have with him over the years. not just the basketball team, but with him. But I also have a job to do. And the day that I don't give my actual opinion, the show will suffer. But I'm not going to lie to you. It sucks. It's, it's, it's, I mean, I've grown up my whole life,
Starting point is 00:05:48 loving this thing, Kentucky basketball. And having the person in charge of it, not like you and having a large segment of the fan base, I don't know large, but a segment of the fan base, blame like us for things and just go, oh, this dude is,
Starting point is 00:06:11 and just like say the most personal mean things, that stinks. And I, so I'm not going to act like it doesn't weigh on me. It weighs on me less now than it did a year ago, but it does. I mean, that's the reason why I'm taking,
Starting point is 00:06:23 well, it's not the only reason. I take three or four weeks off in the summer anyway. But I mean, I think I said this before. Starting Memorial, my last show is going to be the day before Memorial Day, the Friday before Memorial Day. And then I'm not coming back until the 1st of August. And I'm probably going, I'm just going to kind of go away, go to Europe and some places for a couple months.
Starting point is 00:06:44 And it's because I just have to have a reset. Like I can't keep doing it the way it is where, you know, it's just constant. whatever. And, you know, I just, I just can't. So, I mean, it stinks. With that said, I expect when I come back in August, football will be about to start. I'm going to want us to crush it. And I'm going to want us to do well in basketball. But it's, it makes me sad. There's no doubt. That video that got that, that whoever that was that posted, that had a effect on me that was. I just think about how fun those times were. Yeah. And it's, sucks. At the same time, though, if I just came on the show every day and said, things are great when we lose to Oakland, like, that wouldn't work. People would be telling me I'm the worst for that. That's why I said, ultimately, you have to just say, we've gotten to the point that we've reached a level of success and bigness that, like, I just have to accept people are just going to hate me. But that's, I got into this. That's not what I wanted. I didn't want, I'm not Alan Cutler,
Starting point is 00:07:54 and I don't say that to be, but Alan likes to be here. But Alan likes to be. hated. No filter. No filter. But you don't think about it. You know media people like this. They like to be hated. I'm not like that. I don't want to be hated. Because to be successful, we still have to be objective. And I didn't get into this to be controversial. But when the team stinks, what I've learned is you can't help. Remember, when Billy left, this same thing happened. Yeah. Billy had defenders. Yes, he did. Billy had people that said KSR. as ruining the program because they say Billy should go. But with Cal, everything's magnified.
Starting point is 00:08:32 So, you know, it's, I'm not going to act like it won't be awkward, but it was awkward this year. You know, I mean, Drew can tell you, when Cal did his opening press conference, I sat in them back where I couldn't be seen because I didn't want to, I didn't want to make it weird. Yeah. You know, Jack Givens and Tom Leach are two friends of mine.
Starting point is 00:08:53 and like, you know, I talk to him every time I see him, but we all try to kind of get where it's just us, right? Like, that's the way it is. I hate it, but it's the way it is. Well, because it looks like he's not going anywhere, so we have to hit it head on and. I hope we win every game. I hope we win every game.
Starting point is 00:09:14 And he gets to stand up next year at the national championship, Shannon, and tell me to eat it. Yeah, that would be. And you'll be back there cheering. Yep. And saying, go cat. And you'll be eating it. I'll eat it.
Starting point is 00:09:29 I'll eat it with extra mustard. I wrote this on KS. Board last night. I don't care if he cuts the nets and throws the scissors at me. If we're cutting nets, I'm happy. Because the thing is, and I don't say this is disrespect to him, we will be here. We were here before him. We'll be after him. So I just have to remember that.
Starting point is 00:09:51 Like, this is Cooper. H-man, Todd, Brandon, Rob, and Brent that are on the phone lines. And every single person listening and every single person that was sitting with you at the bar watching and the people in Nashville and the people in Pittsburgh, it is your program. At the end of the day, it's not his, it's not the players, it's not even the administrators. I want them all to have the greatest success in the world. But it is this fan basis program. Mitch will retire, Capiludo will retire, Cal will leave. the players will go to the NBA, and you know who still will be here?
Starting point is 00:10:26 Cooper, H. Mann, Todd, Brandon, Rob, and Brent. And we can never lose sight of that. And when we fight with each other, we are letting people who are passers-by in the program divide those of us that are the actual soul of the program. You feel like a lot of people that are so upset and frustrated with the way things have gone. You're the easy one to take it out on. Yes. Oh, no doubt. I'm an easy scapegoat.
Starting point is 00:10:54 But you know what? That's the way it goes. So, but I just want, I hope everybody remembers that. Because if Cal stays, those of you that want him gone, there's going to be people that angers you how much they like Cal. And those of you that like Cal, you're going to be angry at the people that wanted Cal gone. But at the end of the day, the program is us.
Starting point is 00:11:19 Right? That's, I mean, us meaning the. collective big blue nation. Yep. Everybody else is just living here for a little while. Except Shannon, who was never, who was a Vandy fan. But everyone else, you guys are the program. And I hope we can remember that because I hate seeing everybody fight amongst ourselves.
Starting point is 00:11:39 Brandon, go ahead, Brandon. Brandon. Hey, Matt. Hey. I mean, given where things are heading, it seems like Cal is likely coming back. And I'm seeing more people kind of accept that online. and through the results your poll. And on one hand, I respect to loyalty because, I mean, what's the alternative than to hope
Starting point is 00:12:01 for the best possible scenario? But on the other hand, it feels like I'm turning into Will Ferrell and Zoolander. It's just like I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. After hearing that podcast or the radio show yesterday with Tom Leach, I feel a lot worse. I mean, what he said about Golki and saying basically that he watched one game of his and he shot one for nine, so he wasn't going to really worry about him. I mean, that's, imagine the head coach of a powerhouse college football team losing to Army one week and then giving a press conference and saying, you know, that, that triple option,
Starting point is 00:12:35 it really snuck up on us. I mean, that to me is that makes it feel like, he did say after the game, like we didn't work a lot on that zone, you know. You had a week. You had a week. I, I, probably a theory that, a theory that. Cal has that he needs to abandon is this, we do what we do, Drew, and everybody else, we're not worried about it. He's got to get away from that. I appreciate the call.
Starting point is 00:13:00 Because like, that clearly doesn't work. The we do what we do, you know, Rob Dillingham said after the game like, yeah, we didn't spend a lot of time talking about them. Yeah, let's spend some time talking about that. No kidding. That worked 38 and no when you've got Carl Towns of that roster. It hasn't been working lately. There was a game this year. I won't use names, but we were playing a very marquee player. I'll just say that. It's a name everyone should know if you know college basketball. And in the day before interviews with our players, they seem to not even know who that person was. And they were like, we don't focus so much on their personnel. We focus on us and the plays they're running, not their people. And it's kind of like, yeah, but the guy you're playing is
Starting point is 00:13:38 kind of in the time to change for some awards. I mean, when when somebody gets up and says, we knew we weren't going to let Antonio Reeves beat us. So we were going to stick with him all times, which I think one of the teams, maybe Wilmington's coach said, we got to start doing that same thing. Yep. Right. Because if you shut Antonio Reeves down this year, what did you do? You shut Kentucky down. If we could have made Gulky not get seven open looks in the first half, we win that game. Right. He had a couple crazy ones. But if they had just put Reeves on him from the start, we win. But we didn't put him on until the end of the first half. And he already had seven. And he was just running wherever he wanted
Starting point is 00:14:20 on that baseline around screens. Yeah. Getting to do that same spot. And he's open about wanting that spot. Make an end game adjustment. So they weren't ready for the zone and then they didn't adjust during the game. He took eight twos. You know he's not going to drive, Shannon. He took eight twos. And in the pre-games
Starting point is 00:14:36 press conference said, I'm not happy I took those eight. And he said, I'm not taking one tomorrow. He said, I'm not taking one tomorrow. When the rest of the team warmed up, he was the guy that did not go through the layup line. He would just shoot threes. Is that right? Yeah, he didn't even go through the layup line. No, I didn't realize that. I didn't realize that. Rob, go ahead, Rob.
Starting point is 00:14:56 Yeah, the problem I got is it's complacency and it's every. I mean, you could say whatever about his recruiting, but that's not what the work stops is recruiting. There's not been much effort that looks like in coaching this year. Adjustments, game planning, anything. And maybe that's the contract. Maybe he stopped working. I don't know, but
Starting point is 00:15:15 You look at these older coaches, even when, you know, Shoshaski was still coaching or Nick Saban, even Petino. Those are older coaches, but they were still grinding. They were still working. And we don't see that work. Yeah, I don't. I appreciate the call. I don't want to say he doesn't work. I can't say that.
Starting point is 00:15:32 I'm not there. But I do think, well, I mean, there's been some complacency. And there's been this view. It's encapsulated. He says it. We do what we do. Well, what we're doing is not working. So maybe we need to do some other stuff.
Starting point is 00:15:48 Well, I know you guys talked about this yesterday, but what Seth Greenberg said, he needs to go back to the old cow where he was grinding and... Yeah, he said cow needs to go back to old school defensive cow. Yeah. His word was no more swaggy cow, now old school cow. And they're buddies. And their buddies. Yeah. They are like me and you guys buddies.
Starting point is 00:16:10 For him to say that, that's not some critics saying it. That is his biggest defender saying that. So I do think that that matters. Todd, quickly, go ahead. Matt? Yes, quickly. You said back earlier so much money to buy a cow out, where would they get the money to do that?
Starting point is 00:16:37 I mean, $33 million is my understanding. You don't have to pay it up. The short answer to that is I can't go into details, but you don't have to pay it up front. And if Mitch decided that's what he wanted to do, it would be there. Okay. Another thing real quick, do you think Cal if he stays will hire Kenny Payne back? That I don't know.
Starting point is 00:16:59 That's an interesting question. I appreciate the call. It would make Louisville fans' heads explode. I mean, can you imagine if Kenny Payne came back here? I think we have like a mission accomplished ceremony for him. He could use it. He could use it. Hey, the KSR Bowling League is back for the spring.
Starting point is 00:17:14 I'm telling you, you want to get some of the negativity out of your head? This is fun. Everybody that comes is happy. Everybody that comes enjoys it. It's at Collins Bowling Lanes. Get a group of four people together and come have fun. It's KSR bowling.com. It'll start April 24th.
Starting point is 00:17:32 It's a 12-week season. It's a great thing to do to start your spring. Actually, I'm looking forward to going out there a few nights because I think about, we usually have UK special guests that come. and bowl. I think we'll have that again this year. So KSR bowling.com. Get your team. If you haven't bowled, who cares if you're good? It doesn't matter. It's bowling.
Starting point is 00:17:54 It helped us win the tournament. KSR bowling.com. We'll take a break and be right back. It's TechSports Radio. Welcome back, Techies Sports Radio. What did you think of the Boogie Rondo conversation? I'd like to play it on here, but there's some cuss words that make it to where I can. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:09 But basically, Boogie taking the view of, it's like the argument it made in every fan base or in every like fan group chat. Boogie going, we get rid of Cal, why would you get rid of Cal? He's awesome. Everything will fall apart. Everybody has bad years. Rondo going, Kentucky's bigger than Cal. We were good before him.
Starting point is 00:18:31 We'll be good after him. One championship isn't enough. But both arguing with passion, both clearly loving the university. What'd you think of it? I haven't heard it yet. So I'm kind of hanging on here. How did you miss it? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:18:44 show print my man's always ready shannon every show he's ready all right demarcus is my guy that's my all-time favorite he was on the wrong side there but the same time cal's his guy i mean that's what i would say if i was demarcus i did feel like when he was bringing up kentucky pre-cow it's like it's like he only knew of the gillespie era there for a little bit when he was talking about how bad it was where rondo was like well right before that you know we're winning and you know rondo played for tub who's got a title so i liked rondo standing up for the program as a whole. It was just weird seeing them argue about it. Like, can we just hug? But here's what I loved. I love
Starting point is 00:19:17 that they were both passionate. I love that they both cared. I agree more with Rondo. But I love that DeMarcus sticks up for his coach. Right? You should. You should. I would expect to Marcus to have that position. And I like that Rondo had that position. I just love that they both cared. That's what I love. Because I think there's this notion that when
Starting point is 00:19:42 Cal leaves, no one, like his guys won't care about Kentucky. DeMarcus showed that's not true. DeMarcus won't be happy. I bet if Cal were to be like, but like he cares. Rondo cares. Shannon, I like seeing two guys that care that used to play here that both have had six six. Yeah, and I think both had points to what they were saying. Rondo is correct in the fact that Cal has underachieved, only one championship with all the talent he's had. But what did you expect Boogie to say? He didn't think he's going to back his guy. He said exactly what he should. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:20:15 So. Yeah, but I mean, Boogie responded to one of my tweets with a picture of Cal calling him the goat. Yeah. But that's a true. It's a good representation. He should. I didn't, I didn't respond back because that's what DeMarcus should do. And then we communicated last night.
Starting point is 00:20:29 And his, would you like to know what his quote was last night to a mutual friend, Shannon? Yeah. He said, tell Matt. I love Matt. and that crazy-ass white dude with him. And I think he was talking about Drew. Drew has stayed in his house. I've dog sat for him before.
Starting point is 00:20:51 Not that crazy. Trust me with the dog. So I love that. On the, when I had a thought right before that, oh, just that, what they were doing is so much better than guys that would just leave being the NBA and forget anything's even going on.
Starting point is 00:21:04 I don't care if they have the wrong opinion. The fact that they want to talk about Kentucky and still share that opinion says a lot of I love it. And honestly, that argument, my view is if those two guys can have that argument, why can't we have that amongst ourselves? Yeah. Like, you just heard two people who clearly love the program, take opposite sides and go at
Starting point is 00:21:27 each other. That's where we are with our fan base now. And that's where we are. But they don't hate each other. No. Clearly. Yeah. So why would you hate?
Starting point is 00:21:36 Every single person listening to this has a friend who wants Cal gone and another friend who wants him to stay. I had a friend said they want Mick Cronin. I mean, that is insane. Now, that is insane. So all of you have that. So why are you getting mad at the anonymous dude on the internet that disagrees with me? You, you have a friend that disagrees with you, right? Like I said, you're the easy target right now to vent all frustrations. Yes, even though I think the majority of people are on my side, the ones that are not going to be like that. But it is what it is. I mean, there's nothing I can do about that. Cooper, go ahead, Cooper. So I called a couple months after the Gonzaga game, talking about how fresh
Starting point is 00:22:16 right I was, and you know, all I've known is Cal in my life. But what do you think the exact pressure for Jaden Quintens and Carter Knox as coming at 18 years? I hate it for those dudes. I mean, let me remind you about Jaden Quintons for a second. He's going to be one of the freshman next year. You know how old he is? He's 16. Oh, my. He's 16 years old. Now, he'll turn 17 before he plays here, but he's going to play next season, Shannon, and the whole season he's going to be 17. He has to play two years then before he goes for a job. And he's probably our most talented recruit coming in.
Starting point is 00:22:48 And he's 17 years. A ton of pressure at that age. I mean, I feel bad for those guys. All the pressure that's on this team next year, there's going to be a result of what's happened to last four years. He's 17 years old. He has to stay here for two years or stay in college for two years because he's so young. So, like, that's going to be tough.
Starting point is 00:23:08 I appreciate the call. That was part of my thought process in saying, what do we want to do? Because there's going to be, he talks about getting older, but we got six freshmen coming in. You know he's going to play those guys. It's going to be the same pressure,
Starting point is 00:23:25 Drew, next year, if not more. And that was my big thing. I can't remember if I said it yesterday or Friday, but it's just not fair to whoever is on next year's roster to have this fire around them because so much of being at Kentucky is the love you get from the fans and 150% support. And I'm just worried that whoever's on the team isn't going to get the usual experience because people are so upset with the last four years with Cal. Cal was doing a little bit of that Yoko Zuna thing, Shannon, with the ages.
Starting point is 00:23:52 He goes, we played against guys who were 25, 26, 27. He's getting like Trey Mitchell. He lost 23 pounds, 46 pounds. The one dude, though, I mean, he looked like he could have been 26. I think the oldest dude we played was 24, to be fair. We might have played 1.25. We did not play anybody 27 years. Also, in Antonio, 24? Yeah, they're not as old as Max Duffy.
Starting point is 00:24:14 Let's slow down. What about what Cal is saying he's going to go hit the transfer portal? Weren't our last three MVP's all from the transfer portal? Oscar, Oscar, and Antonio. Yeah, I mean, our transfer portal guys have saved us. Yes. I mean, Antonio, that's a really good point. Our last three team MVP's have been transfer.
Starting point is 00:24:33 Transfer portal guys. Oscar, Oscar Reeves. Yep. And our most consistent players are all transfer portal guys in the last three years. The first couple years with Reed and Cestina, they were fine, but they didn't, weren't as good. It's been portal guys. Yes, it has. And it's not lost on me that in June of last year, we still didn't have those portal guys. That's right.
Starting point is 00:24:55 Antonio was a late ad and we lucked into Trey Mitchell. Yeah. Thank goodness we had Antonio. We'll take a break. Be right back. I am making fun of Louisville, I promise, right after this. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay.
Starting point is 00:25:12 Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back, Tegu Sports Radio. Shannon, Kreme Abdul-Jabbar plays tonight on ESPN. That's right. Yeah. At 9 o'clock, Cincinnati, Indiana State, the winner goes to the final four of the NIT. I will be watching. I think I will be too.
Starting point is 00:25:32 It's exciting to watch him. I wish he would have made the NCAA tournament. I do too. But you know what? Get to watch him tonight. Home game? Oh, it's in Terre Haute. It's in Terre Haute.
Starting point is 00:25:42 They had a great crowd for their last win. So I think it'll be a great atmosphere tonight. I've never been to Tara Hote. Very much there. How far? Where is it? It's on the eastern, almost on the Illinois border, kind of about an hour east of Indianapolis,
Starting point is 00:26:00 and about an hour and a half north of Heaven. I'm sorry, west of Indianapolis. I was about saying, it's not on the eastern border, right? It's an hour west of Indianapolis on the Illinois border. Okay, got you. An hour and a half north of Evansville. Well, I'm watching it tonight. Now, we got to get to the Louisville story.
Starting point is 00:26:19 Yeah. All, first of all, let's start with there are people this morning saying Richard Petino is in the discussion. They can't hire Richard Petino. Can they Drew? I mean, let's be real. If his last name was not Patino, there's no one. you would hire him. He failed at Minnesota and he's just been okay at New Mexico. Yeah, but let's let him think. Come on. Let's let him have it. They make it too easy for us, man.
Starting point is 00:26:42 It's a great call. They should hire Richard Petino. Okay. I mean, if they were hiring, that's fine. But Shannon, there has to be a test of would we hire this guy if his last name was different, right? That's true. Yeah. I mean, I guess maybe there's some thought that he learned something from his dad and the, what's the expression? The apple doesn't fall from the trees. How often does hiring the kids? How often does hiring the kid of a legend work. In any part of life, can you think of a extremely successful human being whose extremely successful son, and let's not say something that is a physical talent
Starting point is 00:27:21 like sports? Like the griffies. Or the mannings. Yeah. But can you think of someone who had a job that was extremely successful, that then their son was hired to do the same job and he was equally as successful? I'm not talking about something that's physical talent, but like business, politics, sports. Some people would say George Bush.
Starting point is 00:27:42 Okay. Yeah, okay. I mean, leave aside. Depending on what you think. Yeah. Both are presidents. It's not a terrible. That's not a terrible.
Starting point is 00:27:54 Even though, even there, he's not really getting hired. I mean, the people elected him. I think you're looking for like an actual, I'm just going to hire my kid. Yeah, but it's a job and you go, let's put the. kid in charge and then the kid is as good or better than the dad. I just don't think it happens very often. I think usually the kid is worse. What if the kid went 61 and 41 in three years in New Mexico?
Starting point is 00:28:17 Would you hire a dude that went 61 and 41 at New Mexico if his last name was not Fetito? No, you would not. So they should absolutely do it. So hired. All right. So now let's get to the crazy story. Yeah, the good stuff. Bob Valvano.
Starting point is 00:28:31 Now listen, I like Bob Valvano. He's the color announcer for U of L basketball. So he's there, Jack Givens. Yes. Okay? He goes on his radio show yesterday and says almost offhandedly that the reason Dusty May didn't go to Louisville and pick Michigan was because he had gotten death threats from Louisville fans.
Starting point is 00:28:57 That's a pretty strong allegation. Can you imagine if Jack Given said that? It would resonate. It would resonate. So people were like, what? So Tim Sullivan, I give him a lot of credit, decides to look into it. Dusty May then tells, so he calls Dusty May, Dusty May then tells Tim Sullivan, I've never received any death threats,
Starting point is 00:29:20 I've never received any threats at all, period. Okay, so now no death threats. So then the question is, how did Bob Valvano think there were death threats? Bob said the Indiana State coach, whose name is like Josh Shirts, had told him that last weekend. Okay, now, Shannon, he's thrown another person into the mix. Let's go fact check the coach up there. So Josh Shirts is probably like, uh, what?
Starting point is 00:29:53 He might be in his own coaching searches. So May at Michigan said that Shirts told Bob Valvano if Louisville fans aren't excited about Dusty May, then they wouldn't be excited about me. I'd be a dead man walking. That's a little different than death threats. So then Bob Valvano last night, this is his quote. And I'm not trying to crush Bob, but this is an amazing quote. The death threats I said was a phrase that was used in the course of conversation.
Starting point is 00:30:23 Maybe I said it. Maybe he said it. I'm not really sure. maybe I was the one that brought it up. So he went from a joke about, I don't think they'd like me, to Josh Scherz told me Dusty May got death threats. And then later, Shannon saying he might have been the one that brought it up. That's a big leap.
Starting point is 00:30:49 He apologized last night. But Shannon, and now there are some people around Louisville media saying Josh Schurts is considering not taking the job because of this. Oh, my gosh. Every possible coach that you have, you're now screwing over your own program based on stupid comments that you're making on the radio. But how do you get up and say, Drew, he said there was death threats and then later go, actually, maybe I brought it up. What? I mean, it's not like he said, man, there were people with some mean tweets.
Starting point is 00:31:24 I mean, death threats is a pretty specific and very severe thing to say that is going on. If you're not certain that happened. you just throw it around. You can't just throw that around. I can't just accuse their fan base. How can he say maybe I brought it up? And he's talking about his own fans. Those are his people. He literally said his fans gave death threats to a guy. And he was the one making, like, joking.
Starting point is 00:31:51 It is unfathomable to be how he could give them a quote to Tim Solomon going, well, maybe I'm the one that brought it up. even if he just did that alone without pulling two coaches into it with them is pretty wild but he's reaching up and grabbing them and pulling them into the mud too and I'm sure they're thinking leave our names out of this.
Starting point is 00:32:09 There's more to the quote. I'm sorry I forgot this. Volvano says it was such an inconsequential part of the conversation. If I said it, he didn't stop me. If he said it, I didn't stop him. None of us really thought it was a big deal. Why'd you go on radio and...
Starting point is 00:32:27 If I said it, he didn't stop me. if he said it. What? What does that mean? They're acting like throwing around the word death. The word's death threat is not that big of a deal to either one of them. Far be it for me to take up for Louisville fans. But you can't go around saying they threw death threats
Starting point is 00:32:45 to a coach and then be like, well, maybe I said it. Maybe you said. Neither one of us cared, though. Maybe the dude on the streets. I don't know. Maybe it was a dream. Maybe I just took Ambien and got on the radio. and started to challenge people to races. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:33:03 It's wild. Just absolutely wild and Louisville can never get out of its own way. Can you? they make it too easy for us. It's too easy. I'll show an ounce of sympathy for the fan base on this. If there wasn't a death threat,
Starting point is 00:33:13 that's bad accusations for their fans. If there wasn't one. I'm with you. I'm kind of like Louisville fans kind of got screwed. Yeah, they did. H-Man. Go ahead. I want to thank you for taking my call, Matt,
Starting point is 00:33:26 and want to tell you what a nice job you've done with all this, but I've got to give you a little history of me. I go back to 1967 in Memorial Coliseum, and the two worst losses we've had up until now was when Middle beat us.
Starting point is 00:33:44 Yeah, 74. Was that 74? Yeah, back when that No, no, wait, middle was 83, right? Yeah, yeah, something, I don't remember the exact year, but I know we would have played you. What year was middle or 82? It was somewhere
Starting point is 00:33:59 through there. Yeah, right in there. It was right in there. But go ahead. I've got two more. When L.S. News beat us down in Carolina. That was 86.
Starting point is 00:34:08 Yeah, that was 86. That was Kenny Walker. And then, you know, back Georgetown, the 3 for 33 game. 84. The 80s were hard on you, weren't they? They were like three or four tough ones. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:22 I mean, so in other words, that's where I'm coming from. I can't find anybody my age that wants to keep. Oh, I thought you just met in general. I can't find anybody. No, no, no, no. No, I mean, I went to Louisville to watch the games with my buddy. We've been doing it for over 50 years. I couldn't even watch the end of the game.
Starting point is 00:34:44 I had to drive home and listen to it on the radio and couldn't stay on the road. So you know, are you saying, you don't have to tell me where you live, where you live, but are you saying everyone you know, you don't think there's anybody that's for him? Oh, I have a coffee group. group on Saturday. I just had coffee with two guys today who one guy's real close to the program and and the AD and Cal, I mean, the basketball program's on the island over there. That's how come I think Cal's going to be able to con his way into staying some more. And I mean, it's just dry. It's just made me sick. You know, I listen to your show and then it's over at one o'clock in the
Starting point is 00:35:27 morning and I can't get to sleep. I'm going crazy. Well, I have a solution for you. And I appreciate that. Perfect. Cornbread hemp. Yes. If you want to get back to enjoying life and get sleep with the ones you love, how about cornbread hip? Cornbread hemp will allow you if you use the code KSR to get my grass is blue t-shirt. You got one more week to do this exclusively for KSR listeners. My grass is blue. Actually, the code is March. It changes. Sometimes it's March. Sometimes it's KSR. But if you want the shirt, make sure you use March. It's cornbread hemp.com. How about that transition, Shannon?
Starting point is 00:36:02 It was good. Perfect. You get one every now and then. Every once in a while. I sound like an actual radio. We'll take a break. We're right back. We got some breaking news here, Shannon.
Starting point is 00:36:16 Rani. Nana. The University of Kentucky has hired Kenny Brooks of Virginia Tech to be its new women's basketball coach. He will become one of the 10 highest paid women's coaches in American. They swung for the fences. I mean, I know a lot of folks don't follow. I mean, I'm not going to claim to follow women's basketball intricately,
Starting point is 00:36:38 although I've watched it a lot more in the last couple of years. But this is a dude who built a program from scratch that went to the final four. He did it at his school prior, and now he will come to Kentucky. He will be the third, I believe, the third highest paid coach in the SEC behind Mulkey and Don Staley. So leaves the state he grew up in, Virginia, and now comes to Kentucky to try to build a powerhouse here. What do you think?
Starting point is 00:37:06 So it's official now. It is now official. Virginia Tech actually announced it first, Shannon. Virginia Tech announced he was leaving before Kentucky, which is kind of like a... But I had heard last night, it was just a matter of getting the final money. They had to wait until Virginia Tech got beat to kind of... Well, I mean, he talked.
Starting point is 00:37:25 to them last week. But then, I mean, it wasn't going to get closed until they got beat. Yeah. And he's got like top recruits already committed. So in theory, they could come here. So I think if you're going to pick a guy to turn that program around, I think here's where I think this was with Mitch Barnhart. He's opening up a new facility.
Starting point is 00:37:44 Yes. And the women's basketball team, that facility between me and you has cost a lot more than they thought. When you're talking money, you have to think about that. The renovation memorial has been, you ever saw that movie Shannon Money Pit that Tom Hanks was in in the 80s? No. I saw it. Might have been a little of that.
Starting point is 00:38:04 And they don't want to open it up and be terrible. So I think, Drew, this was the guy they thought could immediately turn it around. Yeah, what he did at Virginia Tech and even James Madison before that were getting Virginia Tech from like the WNIT to the Final Four pretty quickly. He's a good recruiter. His whole career has been in Virginia. I don't know that this would be the case, but you think a guy that's a good recruiter in Virginia, he's not moving that far away. Maybe he keeps that pipeline and those connections going and just uses it to build in Lexington.
Starting point is 00:38:32 And this is a perfect example of why the SEC and Big Ten are going to dominate for the next whatever many years. This is a dude who had gone to a Final Four at a Power 5 school and had built that program and says, you know what, I'm going to the SEC to a program that has historically not been great at women's basketball. So he gets a lot more money And now Mitch's whole attention Can focus on his meeting with Cal today And there is already a Twitter account That is tracking that Cal's playing lands in Lexington
Starting point is 00:39:03 Within the next hour What happens? How does Mitch? That's unbelievable. People do that, but they do. I mean, Mitch will have to have a press conference for this guy. I think that'll happen
Starting point is 00:39:12 But I mean, but Mitch's going to be, Mitt, well, that's the thing. But if he doesn't say anything before that. That's a really good point. He's got to figure out the cow situation before he has the Kenny Brooks press conference or the question Shannon will be about Kat. That's right.
Starting point is 00:39:25 Oh, yeah. You can't have that. Yeah, I didn't think about it. That's really good high, that's right. Roger, go ahead, Roger. Yes, thanks for taking my call, but I got one view that I've been thinking about for after the last four or five years
Starting point is 00:39:40 since John Robic has retired, Coach Cow has gone down. And I know that he must have played a heck part in that organization and the Massachusetts and Memphis. I just want to know your view on that. No, he definitely did.
Starting point is 00:39:59 Definitely did. And I appreciate the call. It was another unfortunate party. It's the best way I can say, you know. Everybody always wants to know the details. I understand that. I'm not going to get into that. It's unfortunate because they miss him.
Starting point is 00:40:17 And he lost Kenny. Dwayne and Robic all within a year. And I think Cal had the view that like, you know what? No big deal. Well, it was a big deal. It was. It was a big deal. Let's go to Francisco.
Starting point is 00:40:35 Francisco, go ahead. Yes, I'm a big basketball fan for Kentucky. I've got a prediction and you're going to say whether I'm right or wrong. The team from this year, except Dillingham, they will all return and they'll sign Mashburn's son well I mean
Starting point is 00:40:56 then we'll have 43 players if they all return I mean we'll have a lot because we got six freshmen coming in and now I don't know about Mashburn's son that's an interesting
Starting point is 00:41:07 I appreciate the call he's in the portal would you take Mashburn's kid average 14 points a game at New Mexico well maybe he's saying he's going to get the job at Louisville
Starting point is 00:41:15 and he'll transfer to Louisville with Richard Petino let me ask you this would you take him if his name wasn't Mashburn That's exactly, Shannon's exactly right. I don't know, but I would only take him if you would take him if his name was
Starting point is 00:41:27 Jamal Smith. Yeah. If you would, then take him. But if you wouldn't, then I wouldn't. Yeah, earlier, I was talking about, I don't know how you could get some Kentucky fans excited for next year's roster if you just wasted this roster. But a back court of Shepard and Madison might get some fans on board. I would want to make, I would want Kentucky to believe.
Starting point is 00:41:50 they would recruit him if he was Jamal Smith. If they believe that, and I would trust their judgment, if they believe that, then, then recruit. But you don't recruit him just because his name is Mashburn. Because that is the exact same argument Louisville's making with Richard Patina. I think he was like second leading score on their team, though.
Starting point is 00:42:07 So he's a decent player. At New Mexico. Yeah. There are going to be some really good dudes. Mici Johnson from South Carolina is now in the portal. Katie Johnson from Auburn just went to the portal. Don't get him. Charlie, what's up, Charlie? First time caller.
Starting point is 00:42:21 Who I? Just a personal opinion. I can't stand the guy, but he plays like a Duke player, and he has quite the attitude. But if he had come to Kentucky instead of Kansas, they'd both still be playing. Hunter Dickinson? I don't know, man.
Starting point is 00:42:41 There's a lot of behind-the-scenes chatter that he's a team killer. So I'm going to say, say that was a blessing to not get him, to be honest. You're probably right. He's got that Duke attitude. Yeah, I appreciate the call. I mean, that's just what you hear. Now, to be fair, Kansas was bad in part because he only had six players and then their leading score got hurt. Yeah. But, Drew, there's a lot of whispers that maybe he hadn't a dude you won on your team. Yeah, I think Kentucky would have just been fine playing three guards in the small ball lineup
Starting point is 00:43:14 a little more than it did. I mean, Dick is a good player, but I don't know that he would, I think Kentucky had everything they needed, which is why this sucks. I don't think adding more players is going to fix anything. Kentucky had all the talent in the world. I honestly believe if Kentucky had just played Oakland with Reed Reeves, Wagner and Dillingham going back and forth, Justin Edwards at the four, and Trey Mitchell at the five, they win. You agree?
Starting point is 00:43:40 Yeah. I think honestly, if Trey Mitchell had not gotten hurt and they played that small ball lineup, I think that all they had to do is play against Oakland. and we would have been playing NC State. That team especially. Their tongues were hanging out in that second half. They were. Hey, Don Franklin's family of dealerships,

Starting point is 00:44:15 Got my Reds gear ready. Cream Abdul-Jabbar. tonight. That's where all my attention is, Shannon. Let's get the Indiana State to the final four. Sicamores. Sickum, Sikamores. Let's go, Larry Nerd. Larry, Dort Novinsky. We'll see you later.
