Now here's Matt Jones.
Welcome, everyone at Kentucky Sports Radio Wednesday.
March to 27th, I am Matt Jones here at the KS Bar and Grill.
It is Wings Day, Dollar Wings all day.
It's our special, you know, you come in,
get KS Bar wings, eat them, put them in your mouth and chew.
Boneless or even less than that all day.
You should come out.
This is a big, I mean, this is going to be a big show.
It's big news day.
A lot of stuff going on.
Ryan Limbts here.
Drew Franklin's stuck in traffic, Shannon.
He's pulling a rhyme.
Stuck in traffic.
Yeah, he's stuck in traffic.
How much traffic could there be?
He says he's stuck downtown in traffic and he keeps showing us his ways as if he couldn't
manipulate that, Shannon, with AI or something like that.
You know what time the show starts.
You got to be here.
You know what time the show starts.
Like, get on there.
You know, there's a lot of ways to get here.
He's just stuck downtown, you know.
I'm going to stand up for him a little bit.
It's a mess down there.
I don't know what's going on.
You got here.
Well, I'm here.
How'd you get there?
Yeah, what did you do?
Do you fly?
Leastown Road, which I usually take to get to Red Mile Road,
was backed up all the way to New Circle.
So I go a different way.
I did.
Okay.
I see.
She didn't work.
I mean, ride figured it out.
Just park your car and walk.
Yeah, listen, just leave.
Right?
Like, just leave.
The show takes pro.
I didn't, I'll just see no shit.
I came down these same roads.
I didn't see any traffic.
Somehow I got here.
Something's going on downtown.
Yeah, there's nothing going on.
If you're downtown, 772-7744-5-254, you tell me if anything's going.
We need a traffic report.
I think Drew didn't want to come here because he's tired of getting yelled at,
and I think Drew is being a liar, liar pants on the fire.
He sent you the screenshot of his way.
He can't AI that.
I always say it's all AI nowadays, Shannon.
You can't believe anything.
The text machine in the app.
Clark's Bobbenshop phone line 859-280-2287.
A-Vision Auto Glass text machine is 772-744-2524.
This is sponsored by T.J. Smith Law, if you call T.J.
He'll make a pay.
I got a lot of stuff for you.
A lot of news stuff today.
So we obviously got to talk about the big news, which we will next.
But we also have, I'm going to give you some tidbits from the Cal Mitch meeting.
All good.
we might have some football news.
Okay.
It may not break before this show's over.
So it'll be kind of right towards the end.
And if it happens, you'll know.
If not, you'll probably find out later today.
But we also have a football recruit coming on the show.
Yeah.
Will this be Shannon, the first football recruit, to come on this show and commit to someone else?
We're still waiting for that to happen.
I don't think that's going to happen.
Maybe one day.
Maybe one day, but not today.
Not today.
Shannon, that's going to be Shannon's favorite player, whatever that happens.
I will respect the troll.
We will have a football recruit, make his commitment on here later today.
But let's start with the big news.
Cal Perry will return.
That was, I was at Skyline.
Okay.
Where all the good people go to you?
I treated myself to Skyline last night.
Can I explain the situation of me tweeting out that he's back?
All right.
All right.
Meeting ends.
I get a text message.
Meeting has ended.
Okay.
Because I knew the meeting was at.
at the craft center.
Shannon,
I almost drove and set in the parking lot.
Like, that would have been a real journey.
Put your ear up next to the window, see if you can hear anything.
I was like, you know what?
We'll give them their space.
So I get the text, the meetings over.
So I tweet out, meetings ended.
Yeah.
But now it's skyline time.
So what are you going to do?
Get a three-way.
Enjoy your skyline.
Normally when I go into Skyline, Shannon,
I leave the phone in the car.
So I take a magazine.
What do you laugh at that?
Magazine and a three-way job.
I leave the phone in the car.
It's usually either New York Magazine or Bloomberg Business Week.
Yeah.
And then, you know, what all the kids are in.
Sure.
And then I go in and have my four-way with onions.
A four-way.
A four-way. You do a four-way.
Four-way, yes.
Cheese, beans, and onions.
No, I don't know, no beans.
A ton of hot sauce.
Point, yeah, all the hot sauce.
Point means, so I take my phone in, and I'm kind of waiting.
And I get the first, a lot of people won't believe this.
I don't put something out until I hear it from either one person that I know would know
or two people that likely know.
That's my personal standard.
I don't know what the standard is in the journalism world, but that's my standard.
Because sometimes people can be wrong.
But if there's one person that I know knows or two people that I think very, very likely know, I'll go.
Sure.
So, like, 90% of the stuff I hear, I don't put out.
There's a lot, a lot of stuff that I've heard in the last few years.
But because I couldn't call Cal directly, like years ago, I'd wait until I had two.
All right.
I get the first one, Cal's back.
All right.
Now I think he's probably bad.
But really, there's two sides of this now.
There's the basketball side and there's the athletic side.
And, you know, they're not on the same page.
Haven't been for years.
So one of them was on one side and I was like, I want to hear somebody on the other side.
tell me that.
And then we finally get it.
So I hear from both sides he's back.
So I put that out.
Sitting, all right.
I want you to picture like booths, Shannon, at Skyline.
Yeah, I can picture.
There were only four people in the restaurant.
Okay.
All right.
The one on Richem Road, that's a big place.
It is.
This probably like 19-year-old guy and his girlfriend come,
and they sit in the booth right next to me to where they're like,
Shannon back to back from me.
Okay?
Yeah.
Like all the places they could have said.
They could have to sit right next to me.
They're back to back to me.
Then it's uncomfortable, right?
Because I'm next to Brian.
Like, I'm right on top of this guy.
Yeah.
And I go, okay.
So I actually flip sides to the other side of the food.
Just to give myself some things.
So I tweeted out.
30 seconds later, I hear the guy tells his girlfriend.
Well, it looks like Cal Perry's back.
And she goes, how do you know?
And he says, Matt Jones.
just said it. And I thought to my shelf,
he doesn't realize I'm right next to him. Yeah. Like, does he know
what Matt Jones looks like? I literally
seconds ago I was breathing in his ear. Yeah.
And now I'm right next to him. So put it out. And of course,
you know, then everything goes. I think a lot of the reports
that came out immediately after that were the quote unquote results
of the meeting, Ryan, I don't know that I think all of those are true.
Really? Yeah. No, I mean, I, I, I, I,
everybody's got like a message they want to put out.
And I think that was kind of the basketball message.
But I do think over the next few days, we'll hear some of what's going to happen.
There's one or two things I'm confident of.
But just overall, the decision to keep Cal is what in your mind?
I guess I'm not totally surprised because like you and I talked about,
I didn't think Mitch Barnhart wanted to be the guy that fired John Caliper.
And as you pointed out, even though the fans were ready for this one more year, maybe the administration was not there yet.
Maybe they are now.
You know, I don't know.
I don't know what the conversation was like.
Maybe you'll be able to fill us in a little bit.
But for Cala Perry, you know, it sounded like on his show that, you know, he wanted to stay.
You know, he didn't want to go anywhere.
I think that was clear from his show.
Yeah.
So I wasn't surprised when that came out yesterday.
What about you, Shannon?
You think a good decision?
Yeah, probably overall.
Probably is a good decision.
And I just, you know, going back to who is going to replace them, there's some names out there that maybe could come in and do a better job, maybe, but you're taking a huge risk when you do that.
You are taking a huge risk.
I wasn't surprised that he brought him back.
As I said, I would have been shocked if they didn't bring them back.
So it's what I expected.
I wasn't surprised, but I have to tell you, Ryan, I think it was a lot closer than people realize.
Really?
I mean, I think they went through all.
I think Mitch went through thoroughly all the options.
All right.
If we fired.
Do we have the money?
Okay.
Where's it coming from?
What do we do next?
Like, what's that process look like?
How do we build a roster?
What's that timeline?
So I think he did that.
And then I think he played out the other sequence, right?
All right, what if we keep him?
What's that look like?
You know, we talked about how they're going to have to sell all these front rows of the basketball thing.
Yes.
Is this going to keep it from happening?
Okay.
it can't be managed like it's done.
Will Cal accept all this?
And I think they made the decision that they were going to keep him
if Cal was cool with what was going to happen.
And they had that meeting yesterday.
And one has to assume he was okay with it
to come out of the meeting with the he staying.
Yeah.
Is that fair to say?
I think that's very fair to say.
Now, I will say, Shannon, so I put that out,
I wasn't the only one.
Other people put it out.
I put that out like seven, something like that.
Yeah.
Mitch's statement was not exactly full of excitement.
No, it wasn't.
It was late too, right?
Well, but I mean, that's okay.
I mean, he doesn't.
But it was 10 o'clock, which you would think would be past his bedtime.
Yeah.
But what do you do enough tweeting?
Go to bed, Cheryl.
This is not exactly, I would say, a statement of huge affirmation and support.
As we normally do at the end of the season,
Caliperie and I have had conversations about the direction of our men's basketball program,
and I can confirm that he will return for his 16th season as head coach.
I mean, that's not.
That's just black and white.
I mean, that's not like the most supportive comment in the world, is it, Shannon?
It's like, yeah, he's coming back.
No, but I think his actions speak for him.
I mean, bringing them back, that's a huge vote of confidence,
just bringing them back and sticking your neck out there as the AD.
But he's also sort of acknowledging that maybe there was some consideration,
because he doesn't write that every year.
Well, that's true.
he doesn't release a statement.
He doesn't release a statement.
He's coming.
He didn't release a statement last year saying Mark Stoops is coming back.
Yeah, he's getting the emails.
He knows there's some angry fans.
Let me ask you this then.
So obviously the pressure's on Cal next year, but is the pressure now also on Mitch next year?
I think so.
I think if Cal fails again.
People point their finger at Mitch now.
Yes, I think so.
Because he had a chance to do it this year.
Yeah.
In years past, it was only really the cooks.
And I say that with affinity because I have some friends that were cooks.
But it wasn't like a real option to let him go.
This year it actually was.
Yeah.
And if he had, I don't know that, I mean, there would have been some people upset.
But like, I think the fan base, most of them would have been all right.
But he chose not to.
So I think he's putting his career on the line too.
I think Mitch is probably headed towards the end of his time here anyway, voluntarily.
Right.
Yeah.
And let's say you only want to do this, Shannon, another year or two.
Yep.
Do you want your last action being firing cow?
You don't.
You probably don't.
No.
Right?
You probably don't.
You're trying to set this up for the next guy, too.
And I think there's an argument that if there would need it to be a change, Mitch might.
Mitch is the kind of selfless person who might be like, I'd like the next guy to make that change.
Although, whoever the next man or woman would be, that would be a hard.
A lot of pressure.
That's a lot of pressure.
You imagine coming in and immediately firing a hall of thing coach.
Yeah, I mean, that's a lot.
Now, what happened in the meeting?
I don't have a ton of specifics, but here are the two things, Ryan,
I think I can say very confident.
All right.
These are the two things I think definitely happen.
There's a lot of stuff that I don't know.
But here are the two things I think definitely have.
One, there are going to be some changes in how the basketball program is run
and who's doing it.
There are going to be some people who've been there a while
who will not be there next year.
You talking about assistants?
I'm talking about there'll be a change with at least one assistant
and there'll be some names that maybe you all don't know
but are the people who run the place.
Gotcha.
That are likely going to be not retained.
And that is a big deal
because some of those people have long-time cow
cows and if we're can we be can we be honest be frank
chanan do you want to be honest i want frank lemon yeah let's let's be honest go ahead
frank no you're frank frank jones today oh i'm frank jones yeah and again
i don't i don't really care if people disagree with this because
Kyle Tucker's article last year showcase, people don't want to know what's actually happened.
I mean, they say they do, but when they do, they just get angry.
Yeah, you pull back the curtain and...
Like, if you pull back the curtain and you don't see what you want to see, you get angry.
Yep.
Not everyone, but a lot of people do.
But the reality is for three years, I think this started with COVID, but honestly, the COVID year was wild in a lot of ways that aren't really cows fault.
although the coaching, I think, was, but some of the other stuff.
But the last three years, it has been an organizational, organizational disaster.
Leave aside what you see on the court.
Just the way things run there have been way out of whack, right?
Yeah.
It's disorganized.
It has led to problems off the court where just in the NIO world,
nobody's sure what to do.
I mean, who do you call?
people with loose lips would tell players they'd get this,
but then they were never really going to get that.
And then that, like, it was just an organizational disaster.
To get to Cal, you had to go through one person.
And if that person didn't like you, well, sorry, that's just the way it goes.
And it was a disaster.
And anyone, if they are honest, anyone associated with UK basketball would tell you that's true.
they all would tell you that people who cow's one of their best friends if you got them on a lie detector
they would tell you that place was run about as unorganized as possible and almost all the off-the-court
problems go to that and ultimately that's cow's fault he's in charge it's true but it's not all
cow it's some discern why do you think these people left in recent years yeah they couldn't take that
anymore. They just couldn't. Kyle dealt with some of that in his article, but it got worse this
year. And I think Mitch, to his credit, has come in and said, that ain't happening anymore.
We UK athletics are now going to go back to what we do for every other school, which is make
sure this is run, or every other program, make sure this is run an organized manner, and you
don't get to do it as your own fiefdom anymore. Yeah, basketball's kind of on its own
island for the last couple of years.
But it was for years on its own island that operated like a well-oiled machine.
Now it's on its own island where it's Lord of the Flies.
And I think Mitch is saying that island is now gone.
Yeah.
And we're going to organize this like we do football, like we do, like every other sport.
And I don't think Cal loves that, but I don't think he had a choice.
because even he knows it can't be like it was.
Yeah.
So do you think they'll end up being a guy, not Dwayne Peev,
but a guy like Dwayne Peevy that'll be that intermediary?
I don't know, but I think the way it is now,
that's the part of the meeting I don't know,
is how they decided it will look in the future.
But I think Mitch said to him,
it ain't going to be like it was,
and you got to be okay with that.
He must be okay with it.
And he must have said yes for this to have worked out.
I was told the night before the meeting.
It is more likely than not he's the coach.
But Cal has to agree that this stuff's getting changed.
Well, it's announced he was the coach.
Yeah.
So my guess is he must have agreed.
Maybe through all this, it's been kind of a humbling experience,
and he's more willing to accept some of this.
I don't know about that.
I don't think he has a choice.
For the first time since he's been here, the leverage is flipped.
Yeah, it's right.
For the first time since he's been here, he doesn't have the leverage,
and this was a chance for Mitch to do what he probably wanted to do,
10 years ago, which is make it an actual well-organized business, not a thiefdom led by
whoever happens to have moved their way into the top.
We'll take a break.
We'll take a break.
We'll talk more about this, KSI.
Mack Davis.
That's right.
Willie's got a good version of this song, too.
Willie does see this.
He sings it at concerts.
Never met a woman who likes this song.
I play this as a joke.
and they're always like this is awful.
I can see why.
It's terrible.
I can see why.
All right.
Drew is here.
First of all, Shannon suggested during the break that we dock your pay for the part of the show you missed.
All right.
You've missed $30.
You've missed one eighth of the show.
You make.
Oh, $6.
You make $2,000 a show.
So you're down $250.
So we're going to.
$2,000 a show.
Wow.
I was about to run out of gas downtown.
I thought, I don't think I could.
fill my car for what I'm missing around here.
No, I don't know what's being serious.
Sorry, I'm late.
I don't know what's happening in Lexington, but I was downtown in one spot for 45 minutes.
Yeah.
I keep looking on our social media.
Somebody I thought would tell us what's going on.
Nobody's told me if it was a president.
I think you're making it up.
All right.
So back to what I was saying for a second.
So I think they're going to reorganize everything.
On the text machine, one person goes,
Matt, are the problems you think Mitch's or cows fault?
And some level they're both.
But again, all right, so let's go back.
It's 2010.
You bring Cal in.
You hire Cal, everybody's excited.
John Wall commits.
Demarcus cousins commits.
Patrick Patterson comes back.
It's like, yeah, bitty-do, here we go, booby-de-bah.
And then Cal starts saying, yeah, I ain't doing that.
I'm doing this.
Now, Mitch, in theory, should take control.
But how are you going to do that?
How are you going to do that?
If publicly there's a problem between the two of them, who's going to win?
Cal Perry.
Cal Perry's going to win.
So then 2010 happens.
You're the coolest program in the country.
You're rocking.
2011 happens.
You make the final four.
2012 you win the national championship.
Cal continues to do what he wants.
At that point, what's Mitch going to do?
Yeah.
And so all of a sudden, you get more and more and more removed.
They had Dwayne Peevy as the one guy who would go, okay, I'll make all this work.
And he does.
And then the day he leaves, it's like the one big brother that everybody listened to
is gone and it's like,
who shannon party all the time, right?
That's right.
And then when you start losing,
it falls apart. That's true.
And that's what happened.
I mean, that's what happened.
Now, let me ask you a question that I got asked yesterday
by somebody pretty closely associated with the program.
Does this work?
Knowing Cal's going to have to do things differently
than he's done for 15 years.
Knowing Mitch is now going to be involved.
and knowing the way the fan base is.
Does this work?
You want me to go first?
Yeah.
My fear is no.
And I think it's because we were at this point last year where changes had to be made.
You've got to do this.
You've got to bring in shooters.
You've got to bring in somewhere for game planning game strategy.
He did.
I just don't think he's going to change like Mitch thinks he's going to change.
Do you think it works?
I have very little faith, which is why I thought it was time to try something new.
I just, I'm still stuck on, why, are we acting like last year didn't happen?
That was the, let's do it year.
It was.
Like when he said Monday night on his show and I appreciate him trying, he said, let's come together and do something special.
I'm still hurting that I'll never see Rob Dillingham in a Kentucky uniform again.
I thought that was going to be something special.
And I'm sure a lot of people are like me, I mean, we're going to get up and cheer for Kentucky
and be for whatever players are in uniform.
I hope a lot from this current team are on the team next year.
I just worry about the promotion and the getting excitement.
and God forbid it goes south and they lose some games early.
It is just going to be nastier than it would need to be if it were a new change.
But the decision's been made.
Mitch's tweet got me ready to run through a wall last night,
and we're going to be cheering for the Wildcats.
Wait for that BB in tonight interview to drop.
This is the way I would put it.
If you ask me to guess, is this going to work?
No.
It's not.
There's too much.
You're asking a man who's coached for 35 years.
to change overnight.
Not just his basketball style,
which to be fair to him, he changed a little.
But like everything about it,
it would be as if you took this radio show
and you said, hey Matt, now you have to follow the rules of radio.
He has to talk X's and O's.
You have to talk X's and O's.
You don't know if that's going to work.
With that said, when it tips off, I hope it does it.
Amen.
We all should hope it does work.
Because if it doesn't, we all live.
lose. Everybody.
40 and O.
All of us. I hope we win every game.
Do I think it will?
What I know of him?
No.
I don't.
But do I hope it does?
Yes.
I want to be wrong.
I want to have it thrown in my face that it works.
But do I think it will?
No.
And do I know the people around them?
Do they think it will?
No.
But I hope it does.
We'll take your calls.
What did you think of the decision yesterday?
We have some football in the second hour.
It's KSR.
T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney.
Call T.J. He'll make them pay.
Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Here's Matt Jones.
Welcome back, Techie Sports Radio.
There are two things going on downtown.
One, the state student technology leadership program at Rupp.
That can't be it.
Thousands and thousands and thousands.
I got out of there before I got near Rup.
The other is that they're putting up Keenland banners and they shut down part of downtown.
Let me just say, Shannon, if that's true, that would annoy me and I wasn't even in the traffic.
Yeah.
Like put up the banners in the middle of the night.
Yes, not during morning rush hour.
They should never, I mean, I get it, but like that kind of stuff, do it in the middle of the night or do it at night.
You should never do that during the day.
Is that a nine to five job and they have to do it between those hours?
I mean, maybe, but like, give over time, right?
Stay till midnight and do it.
Just like pay them time and a half.
Somebody will do it.
Like, somebody will be agreed to that to get time and a half.
Like, you don't shut it down for that stuff.
If I'd known, I would have gotten out and put some up myself to speed up the process.
I sit down every street was red on the thing.
It was gridlock.
We have some breaking news.
Uh-oh.
Oh, hey, does it need the...
Running a nah, nah.
NCAA President Charlie Baker says he will go to all states where gambling is legal and
ask them to ban prop bets for college games.
Prop bets are where you bet on whether a player will score X or Y points, etc.
A big prop bet guy, I'll be honest.
Yeah, that's part of the fun.
I hated Pennsylvania because we couldn't.
I was trying to, well, actually, I was trying to bet Rob MVP of the Final Four.
Yeah.
I'll send me some money.
Well, first of all, I mean, Charlie.
Baker can ask.
He can't, the NCAA, that's the NCAA president, he can't force that.
The states will have to agree to it.
But my guess is most of the states will do what he ask.
Tennessee already does it for collegiate athletes.
Pennsylvania.
So you can't do it in Pennsylvania.
You can't do it in Ohio.
You can't do it in Tennessee.
My guess is they'll do that here too, which, I mean, I get it because you don't want
players to be harassed.
like there were some players at other schools being harassed like I needed you to score 8.5
points and you scored 7 boo um so I get it but yeah I enjoy that but it's fun but I understand
I mean it is what it is it's also if a player really wanted to do that would to shave it you could
shave your under on rebound as much easier than you could tank a game you definitely could
so I think that'd be a big reason why they're getting it out too but it is a little bit of
a lot of fun, but I understand why you're
I get it. I mean, I, I, you know,
I get it. You're supposed to
please play responsibly, and if people don't
that's the way it goes. All right, I'm going to go to the phones real
quick here.
One person writes, Matt, I don't
understand your negativity. Why don't
you think these changes will work? Well, no.
Oh, and then another person writes, Matt,
will you give me the context
of how you think this stuff can work
positively? So let me do that to answer
the first question. Okay.
First of all,
you have to believe
that once the game gets on the court, the problems we've seen will not occur anymore.
The defense will get better.
The physicality will get better while also playing offensively like we did this year.
And the end of game stuff will be better.
So that's number one.
And if that happens, that's good.
And then number two, you have to sort of assume that the kind of terrible misorganization of that department gets fixed.
If both those things happen, yes, I do think it can succeed.
but if they don't, they don't.
Our NIL has been a disaster the last couple years for players transferred.
For the guys coming in a high school, it's not been a big deal.
Cal, to his credit, is able to sell the NBA to such an extent that NIL is not really the big reason those guys come,
although they do well in it.
But for transfers, the NIL is the thing.
And we have done a pretty poor job of doing what we've said we would do.
I'm just being real.
just the reality and it's gotten out there and people know it and what Nate called the other day,
again, I can't confirm his circumstances, but he ain't the, I got blown up with people saying
the same thing as soon as it was over. Didn't you, Ryan? And what just this makes me sad that, you know,
we should be at the forefront of something like that. We're Kentucky. So hopefully that call
actually spurs some change. Maybe, yep. But I give Mitch credit for saying all that needs to change,
but at the same time, the question is, will it?
And I don't know.
A lot of these things Cal knew about last summer,
and he could have looked in the mirror and fixed him itself,
is what gives me while I lose a little bit of faith.
Go back and read Kyle Tucker's article.
He talks about all of this.
Yeah.
And he got shouted down.
And what I would say to our fan base,
I'm not trying to yell at you all because I love our fan base.
To me, as I said yesterday,
BBN is what the program is.
but folks have got to also look in the mirror.
When you get bad news, if you shout it down,
it only enables the bad behavior.
Right?
Yep.
It only enables the bad behavior.
When you go, fake news,
bad, be, big, bit.
And then you come back a year later and go,
why is it like this?
Well, somebody tried to tell you and you yelled at it.
Say, we're creating drama because we need clicks.
No, we're trying to tell you it's a circus over there.
You want clicks.
He won't come on your show.
no these are real problems
but when you make it to where the personality
is bigger than the product
you will end up with a situation like this
you know
I'll just use
the party that I'm in
when Obama was president
he did some things that I didn't like
but you couldn't criticize him
because everyone loved him
the right is the same way with Trump some of them
And you know I'm right about that.
They'll defend any behavior because they like him.
We can't do that.
And you can't do it with basketball either.
Especially Kentucky.
We got to look out for Kentucky.
Look what Louisville did for years.
It did not matter what George and Patino did because Jenna, hater.
And then it all falls apart.
And you end up with the circus now that they're talking about hiring Bobby Huggins and Richard
Patina.
How long will that list get if they don't get Richard Petino or Bob Huggins?
Where does it end?
I didn't even think they'd get this far down the list.
What's the next crazy name that could come up for them?
Like, I don't know.
Bob Huggins and Richard Petino are honestly the two I would come up with.
Billy Gillespie?
Yes.
There we go.
If they add Billy Gillespie to list, although I think you could make an argument,
he's more qualified than both of them.
Maybe so.
Who's up first?
Judy.
Judy.
Judy.
Judy.
Judy.
Judy.
Judy.
Judy.
Judy.
Judy.
Judy, Judy.
Hey, how are you all?
Anytime you're ready, Judy, go ahead.
First thing I want to say is I'm so proud of my nephews, Troy and Clark have,
for their coverage of the Boys Basketball Tournament.
Yes, they did a great job.
They did.
And second is, you know, we've struggled on defense.
Did we have a defensive assistant that was good at that?
Was Kenny Payne good at that?
Who do we need to be a defensive coach?
I appreciate, Judy.
I don't know.
Who was kind of in charge of defense with this group?
I'm not even sure.
My understanding is allegedly Chin is it.
With Kenny, I think a big thing.
And this has been said publicly by players.
And a lot of it has been in praising Kenny since he's been at Louisville.
But that dude when he was at UK, and you've heard him all say it,
they could call him at 2 in the morning,
and he would get out of bed and be at the gym in 15 minutes.
to work people out. That was like Kenny's gift.
Didn't matter the hour. He could be with his family.
He could be in the middle of a round of golf.
If Julius Randall or one of those guys called Kenny and said, I need an hour in the gym,
he's there. And I think that has been missing a lot, too.
I think a lot of times availability with this staff, you know, they missed that a lot.
That was Kenny's strength. And just, you know, having a guy come over at any time to work them out,
they miss.
My guess is we'll have a different defensive coach next year.
I think so.
Then whatever it was that occurred.
Just have a seat, fellas.
Who's up next?
Justin.
Justin, go ahead, Justin.
If you don't want to sit so close, you're welcome to sit over there.
It's up to you.
Some people don't want to hear me screaming while they're eating lunch, so I understand.
Go ahead, Justin.
Yes, I think the only way that this is going to work out is one,
Cal has to stop mocking the fans, and two, I think he needs to go after Kenny Payne and John Roebuck again.
It has not been the same since both of them have left, and it has not been the same ever since John Robic has left.
He's the X's the nose, and he's been through, he's been with Cal through most of his
career. They need to go after John Robic at all cost in order for this to work, in my opinion.
Thank you.
All right. I appreciate the call. Yeah. The talking down and the fans, I mean, you know,
you know my opinion on that. You want to know how I'll know if Cal's changed?
Let's see what happens next year when they win some games. That's what I want to. I want to see what
happens. Does he, is he the, you know, go back and watch videos of Cal after wins.
2010 to 2018.
Go look at how gracious he is.
It was a celebration.
It's a celebration.
Go look at how much fun he's having during the post-game show.
Then go watch him after the Auburn game or after the Tennessee game.
And just see, like, can you get back to that mindset?
I loved what he said in that radio show where he said, we all need to come together.
Yeah.
You're the biggest part of that.
you're the biggest part of that.
All coming together is all.
I'll meet you there.
If we're winning, our fans will meet you there.
Yep.
But you got to come there too.
And, you know,
you got to bring people together,
everybody's got to be part of that.
And I think that's an important thing,
and we'll see if he's able to do it.
Who's next, Shannon?
Let's go to Dwayne.
Dwayne. What's up, Dwayne?
Hey, Matt.
first time caller.
Who are?
Listen, listen, I've got this hypothesis about Calgary.
You know, and I just want you about it.
Yes.
We talked about yesterday.
I like that way.
He uses the word that we talked about yesterday.
Go ahead.
And just the basis real quick, though.
You know, I think about when Cal Perry first came,
some of the players he had and the talent he had, you know,
and the cousins and, of course, you know, Anthony Davis.
And I just think, you know, I'm not saying anything about this team we've had this year.
They're good players.
Don't get me wrong.
But I just don't believe that they're the caliber of players that we have.
Well, those dudes don't come around.
To be fair, though, those dudes don't come around very often.
I mean, like, let's go look since John Wall was here.
Elite, elite, elite college basketball players.
How many have come along since then?
all right wall was one
and that's
anthony davis was one
Zion was one
Carl Towns was one
Cooper flag that's going to
Duke next year is one
but there just ain't a lot of those guys
so I mean that plays to the
point that plays to the point that I'm trying to
make yeah I feel like
that John Cal Perry
to me has never been a good coach
and when I say a coach
I'm talking about, you know, years ago, there was a sport made basketball,
and they said that guy that's head over is going to be called the coach.
And his main thing was to tell the players where they're going to be on the court.
You know, obviously recruiting was a bigger thing.
And I just believe, first way, that the talent has carried him.
Well, I appreciate the call.
I don't totally agree with that.
But here's what I think his brilliance is as a coach.
Let's give him a compliment.
There ain't a better coach in the country who, maybe since John Wooden, at taking talent, molding them, getting them to buy in and making them work together.
Right?
These guys sacrificing minutes.
Sacrificing their individual stuff for the team.
He's great at that.
And in his best, he's been the best at that.
He got 10 dudes, all of whom could have been stars for teams to agree to platoon and go 38 and 1.
That's pretty good.
Now, what's happened in recent years?
To me, that's a different conversation.
But I don't want to make it to where you just bag on him.
Like, he got 10 guys, eight of whom played in the NBA, to agree to play 20 minutes a game.
And Devin Booker still brags about how he didn't start.
That's crazy.
It's crazy.
When you hear a waterfall in nature, that's no cause for concern.
But what if it's in your house, Ryan?
Oh, bad.
What if you're at Fenway Park and you get a call that your house is on fire?
You cry in the suite.
You can't just go to David Ortiz and hugging like Ryan did.
You have to go to servepro.com.
1-800 serve pro, S-E-R-V-P-R-O.com.
Serve-Pro will come make it like it never even happened.
They'll clean up your fire, your water damage.
It's all there.
It's serve-pro franchisor independently owned and operated.
I hope you don't ever need them.
But if you do, 1-800 serve pro or servepro.com.
We'll take a break.
Be right back.
It's Wingsday here at KS.

One person writes, Matt, you know there are rumors going around the internet with a post.
Do you think they're true?
I don't know.
I mean, by the end of the day, everybody will have seen that post true, but I can't really confirm almost any of that.
So I don't know.
I usually hear a lot of gossip.
That one I had not heard before.
Yeah.
But I mean, maybe it is.
I have no idea.
I have no idea, but I don't know.
One person writes, Matt, you can't tell people how to fan.
If they don't want articles like Kyle's out because they're a distraction, that's okay.
Well, I guess it's okay, but then you wonder why we lose.
You know, I mean, here's the thing.
If you don't want to know how the sausage is made, I get that, right?
Like, that's my view about when I buy food in grocery stores.
Don't tell me how it got there.
You know, I don't want to know.
And maybe that's how you'll be about basketball, right?
Like maybe a fan's like, I don't want to know what's happening behind the scenes.
All I care about is whether they win or lose.
Okay.
But then I don't think most people are like that.
I think most people want to know, like, why did this not go well?
And correct me, if I'm wrong, didn't Kyle's article come out in October
before they even played one exhibition game?
Yes.
And Kyle's article quoted five different people that were on the staff.
So that was even before this season even started.
Yeah.
And I thought it was nice to see.
some of them. And I will note, I'm not saying these people were quoted in the article, because I have
no idea, because it's not like he told me. But let me go look at some of the people that have left us
in the last couple years, and let's see how they did. Where did Jill Justice go?
Is it NC State? Where are they? Where did Jay Lucas go? Duke quickly. And where are they?
Sweet 16. Where did T.J. Bisoner go?
North Carolina.
where are they? Sweet 16. So, you know, oftentimes it's very easy to sort of blame the people
that left. And let me say, I like Jay Lucas and Beisner. I didn't really have a great
relationship with justice, but the point is they're still playing. So, you know, it is what
it is. Let's not forget our video guy left to go to Temple. Like it's not just the big names.
But I'm just saying you're at Kentucky basketball and you're looking around like,
I bet it's better at Temple.
One person writes, this is for Shannon.
Have you watched the tracker?
Because I saw on basketball all weekend that we needed to watch tracker.
Did you watch tracker?
No, I have not.
Have you?
No.
I know my friend the turkey hunter loves it.
Really?
But I think it's kind of a joke.
But he's always like, I love the trip.
But like they advertise, that's the show.
If that show doesn't get good ratings from this tournament that I don't know what you do
because they talked about it every five minutes.
every CBS commercial break, you got a promo for that show.
Did you see Rich Eisen asked DJ Burns yesterday when he got fat?
Oh, wow.
Did he word it just like that?
No, he said, when did you put on all your weight?
Over the course of time?
And people in the comments section were like,
they should have looked at Rich Eisen and go, when did you go bald?
I thought that was, like, objectively, the reason we all like him is that size.
At the same time, though, do you have to, like, throw it in his face?
You know?
I know we talked about on Fayette.
I can't remember if we said it on this show.
But, like, when they brought him the Sunday on the court after he played?
Well, did you take everyone an ice cream Sunday after they had a good game?
I mean, you could tell DJ Burns is like, what?
Why do I need a Sunday right now?
I mean, like, I don't get it, Shannon.
Why did they just throw it in his face every game?
Of all the questions to ask the guy who's in the Sweet 16, you talk about his weight.
When'd you get so big?
Yeah.
You've always been a fatty.
Is there any tactfulness at all?
Yeah, I just feel like, give me, I don't know.
Who's next?
It's fun to watch them.
Let's go to Larry.
A lot of fun.
A lot of fun.
Kreme Abdul-Jabari in the final four.
Larry.
Larry.
Where did that come from?
Larry, go ahead, Larry.
Larry, go ahead, Larry.
Okay, well, let's go to Bill.
Let's go to Bill.
Go ahead, Bill.
Jabari.
Okay, two quick points.
I'm like the real quick.
What do we do next?
Take me off speaker, Bill.
Okay.
Do you do that for it?
No, but go ahead.
Okay, I'm sorry.
What happens if we go 32 and 2 in the SEC ring of season when the tournament
and lose in the second game with the NCAA, how do we evaluate that?
And secondly, at what point do we recognize the fact that the NCAA tournament
is a very simple tournament?
I would have been every dollar ahead that we would be.
to Oakland three out of five, but we don't say it's all the time. You can't judge a coach by one tournament,
but you can judge a coach by 15 or five. And that's the issue. If we just lost to Oakland,
not the biggest thing of the world, but we lost to St. Peters two years ago. We'll take a break.
Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and
