Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.

Starting point is 00:02:13 This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones. Welcome, everyone, Kentucky Sports Radio Thursday, March 28th. It is opening day here in the United States of America. But today at KS Bar and Grill, Screw over just a little bit. So I'm not hanging off the end here. The cats, well, they don't play today.
Starting point is 00:02:37 The Reds play today. But nevertheless, we are here. You can give a shout on the Clark's puppet shop phone line. 859-280-2287. A Vision Auto Glass Text Machine is 772-7474 in this edition. It's sponsored by the TJ Smith-Lawvis. Call T.J. He'll make them pay.
Starting point is 00:02:53 I am leaving as soon as the show ends and heading off to the Reds game. I got my cut. Look at these Red shoes. Yes. of those. Yeah, I got these made. This is another true blue customs thing. Look right there. Oh, that's nice. Got your Reds hoodie on, your Reds hat.
Starting point is 00:03:09 Yeah, I'm leaving right after the game. Games at 4-10 against those hated Washington Nationals. You know, they're evil, those Washington Nationals. They're also like the worst team in basketball. Well, that's why, you know, the Reds are feeling good about their chances to win that bet. Last Team to lose. Yeah, there's a bet on Draft Kings, which I don't know if you can still do, but it was last team to lose a game, Drew.
Starting point is 00:03:30 and the Reds were like a third favorite just because of their schedule. What was, do you know, the Reds win total? I know that earlier went over. I didn't know if they got some faith behind this season. I think they were like 84 and a half or something this year. Feeling good on that? I did. And then like they got some guys hurt that Matt McLean is out now and he was probably their best
Starting point is 00:03:48 player last year. He's going to be out for a couple months. But we'll talk about the Reds. I have some, you know, I have some serious Reds thought, Shannon. I'm going to, you know, this is this is the year. Oh, this is the one. So you're actually going, though. Don't you normally sell the tickets?
Starting point is 00:04:03 No, I sold mine. I sold mine. I'm going. I'm sitting with the people. Oh, good game. I'm up in like the 400s up in left field. No, I sell mine for this one. You know what I got for mine?
Starting point is 00:04:16 You all know where my seats are. Yeah, yeah. $600 bucks apiece. Wow. I sell those tickets too. I mean, no offense, I'm going to sell that in a heartbeat. You think I'm going to pay you? Like how much candy that will buy you?
Starting point is 00:04:26 Yeah. I don't know how much season tickets are, but I would say that would pay it back. at least a little bit. Well, no, not entirely, but I mean, a little bit. No, but it's a nice chunk. Here's what I always do. This is how I can get a fourth of my season ticket price back by selling opening day. And then if the Reds or excuse me, if the Red Sox or the Yankees come.
Starting point is 00:04:50 Sell those games. Yeah. If you just do that, I can get about a fourth. And then if your Cubs or Cardinals are good, those games. games can be big, right? Same with the Braves. Now, I like to go to some of those games. I mean, I don't sell them all.
Starting point is 00:05:05 I haven't been to a Red Sox or Yankees game. Do you sell them? Well, it's just, you can't not sell. Especially the ones I, because all those rich New Yorkers and Bostoners are like, oh, we want to sit in a good seat. These are only 600. Yeah, they're only, no. Honestly, I think that's how they look at it.
Starting point is 00:05:23 It's only, whereas for me, 600 bucks, a lot of money. You know, so those, so, so I haven't said, my seats in opening day in a decade. Is this the most you've ever sold them for? Did you bump the price up? Okay, so selling seats online is a whole thing. Right. I mean, I usually, when I sell seats, sell them day of,
Starting point is 00:05:44 because I usually decide day of if I'm going. There's a mastery to it. If you wait too long, you almost have to give them away. But if you can sell them two hours before the game, that's when I've learned you can kind of get the premium price. But with opening day, that's such a huge amount of money. I'm not risking it. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:06:04 Plus, opening day, because it's a holiday, people want to do it, like, way in advance. Sure. So I sell the, but, like, Saturday, I've decided if we win today, I'm going Saturday. If we don't, well, then I'll see what else. Because I don't want to be 0-2 against the worst team. I'm already nervous. There's only 162 games. We've done enough O-N-2 this March.
Starting point is 00:06:27 I hope we all get some wins. It's true. All right, so I have some breaking news to start the show. Oh, my. Okay. Running a nah. This just got announced. The 15 club.
Starting point is 00:06:38 You know, that's the UK football NIL thing. Has announced the 500 club. This will be a group of, I assume with 500, they're hoping 500 VIP donors that will get exclusive VIP experiences around UK football. The first of which is, on May 10th, they're bringing John Legend to Lexington for a private VIP concert for the 500 club. The expectation is the 500 club will raise, get this amount of money, $4.5 million a year for UK football NIL. Wow. If you do that math, I guess that would be, what, 10,000, 8 to 10, I don't know, 10 to 12,000 a year, 8 to 10,000. I'm not sure what the math is of that.
Starting point is 00:07:31 But John Legend is coming and doing a VIP concert for 500 people and their guest in Lexington for U.K. football. Did you ever think you would see the day? No, I didn't. I think it's really cool, though, to have... His nephew for people don't know is on the team. I think that makes it really cool, but he's helping out the program by doing this for the VIPs that join this club. Do you think you will get it? Not a chance in France.
Starting point is 00:07:57 I got that kind of money. No, I would love to go. I've been told, by the way, Drew, that they already have over 200 people. Wow. So I think I actually think they'll get that amount. I do. I think they'll find that amount of people because, I mean, if you're going. First of all, here's why I think this is really creative.
Starting point is 00:08:17 One of the things it's been a struggle for these teams' NIL thing is what do people get for their money? Right. Like, that's the thing everybody always thinks is what do we get for giving this amount of money? And that's hard. But the one thing that money can't buy you, Shannon, well, it can, but it's hard to, is experiences. Yeah. Right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:38 Like, people can get things, but experiences. So if they now make it to where what they're doing is bringing these kind of exclusive experiences, Drew, I can kind of see that working, actually. Heck, yeah. John Legend, I mean, that's a nice first event. I figured we would get something with him eventually. maybe just seeing him at the stadium because he's close to his nephew that's on the team
Starting point is 00:09:02 Anthony Brown Stevens, but a private concert for Kentucky fans? I think they need to give out some media credentials for this. Oh, I've already tried to weasel my way. I love John Legend. I'm sneaking in the back door if I have to. What are you going to do if I get credentialed for this, but you guys don't.
Starting point is 00:09:17 Opposive the SEC tournament. I don't think they're going to do credentials. I think this is going to be one of those like phones off, you can't, you know, that kind of thing. More exclusive to fills, the more people will want to be involved. No, I think that's exactly right. I thought the first one would be like Flo Rida.
Starting point is 00:09:32 But John Legend, that's a pretty big get. And it's May 10th. They already have the date. That's awesome. Do you know of any other experiences that they're talking about? One at a time, Ryan. I don't know. How many do you want?
Starting point is 00:09:46 I'm just excited about the club. You're not in it. No, but I can be on the guy looking through the window. I want to be in there. I understand. I mean, listen, you got, let's say it's, let's say it's $10,000. That's Ryan Lemon money.
Starting point is 00:10:00 No, it's not. But you could do some endorsements, right? Like how many endorsements? You could go to some, how about this? You go to a local business and you say, I want to be the face of this business. And for the year, all you got to do is get me into the John Legend concept. What do you think about that?
Starting point is 00:10:21 You could do that. I would jump on that in a second. And the good thing about you is it could be any business. Any business. You don't have a standard. No. A rectal dysfunction, I'm in. You already do like three of those.
Starting point is 00:10:35 But, well, I do think, I think this is a very creative, kind of forward-thinking thing that I could see. I can see this working. I'm not saying it will. I don't know, but I could see it working. Yeah, I think you dealt with giving rich people something they couldn't get otherwise, because eventually you can only sit so close to the games at the U.K. You can only have so many dinners with the coaches. Exactly right.
Starting point is 00:10:57 Most of the donors in Lexington, probably 99.9% of them won't go to a private John Legend concert because the opportunity is just not there. But you start doing stuff like this and I think more money will start showing up because they'll get the UK experiences and the extra stuff. I don't know really rich people, Shannon, because I'd rather hang out with like you. Gee, thanks a lot. I mean, I don't even know how to take that. Well, I'm not rich. You're right about that. I'd rather hang out.
Starting point is 00:11:21 I'm just saying I'd rather hang out with like, you know, people. I'd rather go to like K. bar with Shannon the dude, then go to eat caviar under the sky. Well, I would too. Yeah, I don't want to be in that setting. But the thing is, for people who do that, who live that, I have learned over the years. Like, it's the, it's the, the things they like are the things that you can't just go by. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:46 And like, you can't get a, I can stand at, you know, Manchester Music Hall and see John Legend. You can't do that everywhere else. That's why that Jack Harlow thing was so big down there. Because how else are you going to do it? Right? So, Shannon, I actually can see how that works. Oh, yeah. I think that would be awesome.
Starting point is 00:12:04 It would be, like you said, an experience that only a certain amount of people are going to get. And I think that is, for a lot of people, invaluable. So there you go. They hope for five. Listen, if it's 500 people and it's $10,000 a year, let's, I don't know what the number is. But let's just say it's 10. Then that would be five. Go ahead.
Starting point is 00:12:23 Have a seat, folks. Yeah, come on it. That would be $5 million. Maybe the four and a half, you know, there's administrative or maybe you have to pay an artist or rent a building or something like that. But listen, I'll tell you this. If UK football can draw $4.5 million in year in NIL, they'll all be sudden be competing with the best programs in the country for players.
Starting point is 00:12:42 Yeah, that's awesome. I mean, that's a huge amount of money. It is. Like, if they're able to do that, and I, you know, I'll need to see it. But if they're able to do that, that's a huge amount of money, Drew. and that puts you out there playing with the big boys on Nile. Yeah, and I assume this will get some national attention. We've seen this at other schools where they'll try something new
Starting point is 00:13:02 and everybody's like, oh, wow, that's a great idea. I expected this to be a big story across the sport because I haven't seen anything quite like this at even the big universities who are doing well. Justin Rowland just wrote it. He follows the NIL stuff closer than I do. If the 500 strong clubs able to produce $4.5 million, as Matt Jones says, that's probably a hope, but it's a great foundation.
Starting point is 00:13:24 It may not get you to the very top SEC programs, but it puts you in a ballpark that you can put a really interesting team together. Yeah, it gives you a little more of a recruiting advantage over a lot of schools, for sure. So that's where it comes in handy. So there you go. So that's the football news I teased yesterday. It's good news. And, Shan, you'll have to play some John Legend today because I'm not sure if I can name a song.
Starting point is 00:13:46 Oh, I've got two at least I can name. Ordinary people. Go ahead. Go ahead. How's it go? Drawing me in and you kicking me out. You got my head spinning. That one?
Starting point is 00:13:57 You like that one? I can't recognize it just by you. Okay. All right, Shannon, what's yours, you know? What's going on? Sorry. I'll play it for you coming up next. Oh, you don't want to sing it?
Starting point is 00:14:08 No. I mean, you're the singer. I don't know the words. I mean, I know the song. I don't know the words to sing it. There's one that I know I will know when you play it, but I can't think of it. Mitch and Cal did a TV interview yet.
Starting point is 00:14:20 yesterday. I'm going to admit to you that I did not watch it, but I did see highlights online. So did you watch it and did you have a takeaway? I watched it at 1130 last night before I went to sleep. And I have a couple of takeaways. Okay, now be positive. Yeah. The one, the way they started, I thought was very awkward where they're like, the fact we don't have a relationship is garbage. It's just garbage that we don't have a relationship. But notice he didn't say a good relationship. He just said a relationship. I mean, technically everyone has a relationship, right?
Starting point is 00:14:55 But then after that, I felt like they were... They calmed down. They calmed down and were like having a little bromance. You know, John likes to do this. Well, Mitch likes to say this. Well, John does that. Well, Mitch does this. There was a lot of that going on the rest of the interview.
Starting point is 00:15:08 Don't you tell him about it, John? Yeah, yeah. There was a lot of like, hey, John, say this. There was a lot of that. But I got to be honest. I love the WWU. belt. Oh, that was awesome.
Starting point is 00:15:21 Yeah, we need more on that. Why have we not seen that before? That's the coolest thing that has, first of all, that's Mitch's office. That's the coolest thing in Mitch's office. Here's how I knew they were ready to go. Mitch had the top button, unbuttoned. Oh, well, he's in his office. He had the top button, unbutton.
Starting point is 00:15:37 He was like, all right, party time, a little bit. I want you to see, I want you to see Mitch with the lights down a little bit, you know? Oh, yeah. The belt was my main takeaway. Ryan's right, though. The beginning was a little awkward. They got in their groove as it went on. but it's like they turned on the lights and we're like, we like, we like each other.
Starting point is 00:15:52 I was like, wait a minute, can we just say hi? Can we introduce ourselves first? But there was a part to give them credit. They showed a lot of humility and wanting to leave the job better than they picked it up. That's been something Mitch has said for years, and I give him credit. Like, Mitch has definitely said, you want to leave it better than you got it. And Cal kind of defended himself. He's like, I hope I've shown that I've done well for this state. I don't think there's anyone saying Cal hasn't done good for this state.
Starting point is 00:16:14 I kind of felt like he was defending himself there. I want to make no one, no one's arguing Cal hasn't been a good person. between there'd be a better way for you to interact with fans and media now than to not act like, no, he's been a great ambassador for the state as a whole. Charity work. I mean, like, nobody, I think, would question that. Certainly not me. I mean, he has been, but that's a different issue than the issues we've been talking about. But that was their best part is around the middle of the interview.
Starting point is 00:16:42 Both of them were talking about how they don't want to leave Kentucky without it being better than it was when they both showed up. It kind of sound like it might be a little walking in step when that day comes to. There was a sense where they were almost acting like, let's walk out the door together. But who knows? Well, we'll talk more about it. I'd like to hear what you all thought. Listen, we've had to talk a lot. I had somebody write me and say, Matt, ask your fans that aren't regular callers to just give their opinion of what they think this is now after a week.
Starting point is 00:17:15 Do they like the decision? Do they like the decision? Do they know? I think that's a good question. So if you call regularly, I love you. Come back tomorrow. I'd just like to hear the general fan base because I always hear, well, Matt, you don't represent.
Starting point is 00:17:25 Burber, but, okay, that's fine. General fan base, what do you think about where we are? Are you glad they kept him? Do you wish they hadn't? Are you confident, whatever? 859-280-2287, and we'll play some John Legend, and then I'm ready for the Reds. We'll take a break.
Starting point is 00:17:40 Be right back. We're here at KS. Bar with Old Smokey. I like that hat. We'll be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back. Now what's this song, Shannon? Ordinary people, John Legend.
Starting point is 00:17:51 Maybe we should take it slow. All of me, do you have that one? I know that song. Yeah, I can find it. All right. That's what Drew was singing. I couldn't. I was singing all of me.
Starting point is 00:18:00 I couldn't tell by Drew's voice that that was all of me. Well, I didn't have my piano. I can actually play it on the piano, too. I'd do it right now. You might have it on my phone. Now, somebody told me Abby's birthday. Is that night? Is May 10th.
Starting point is 00:18:13 Also a John Legend. You're going to have to find a way to get hurt. I'm going to find a way. $15,000, whatever it takes. Now, somebody Shannon told me that Ryan has already snuck his way in. Can you believe that? Already, that didn't take long. How did you already sneak your way in?
Starting point is 00:18:26 I have already been invited. I may be going to see John Legend. So you got invited. The three of us did not get invited. What about us? Yeah. Well, if you want no truth, they invited all of us. Oh, so.
Starting point is 00:18:37 I just wanted you to think I've only wanted to get invited you. This is Ryan plus three. Well, I can't be there. I'll be met. You can be me. I can't be there. My mom graduates from seminary that day. Oh, that's a big deal, too.
Starting point is 00:18:50 I'm going to Dallas to, they'll say, Karen Green Blondell, and I'll stand up and go, yay. That's my mommy. My mom. That's my mommy. You know what? But seriously, how cool is that? 70 years old, and she's graduating from seminary on May 10th.
Starting point is 00:19:08 So proud of her. That's incredible. Very proud of her. John Legend will do hundreds of concerts. There will be one time your mom walks across that stage. I would miss my mom. I'm seminary graduation for anything. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:19 Because you know how, I mean, seriously, think about that. She retired from practicing law and at the age of 67 decided I'm going to pursue the one thing I've wanted to do my whole life. Like, that should be the most inspiration for anyone. Whatever it is you want to do. Like life's not over. You just go and like she spent three years doing it. She calls me, Shannon, every time she gets an A.
Starting point is 00:19:44 Yeah. It feels like I'm the parent. She's the student. And by the way, she gets an A on everything. Like, she's never gotten anything less than an A. So she'll call and go, guess what I got in the book of Acts. And I'm like, let me guess. An A.
Starting point is 00:19:57 And she'll go, an A! And like I say, all right, when would you like me to sign your report card? Do you put it up on the refrigerator? I do. I put up her papers on the refrigerator. I give her treats when she does well. You need a. I'm an honor roll son.
Starting point is 00:20:11 Yes, you do. You do. I would like, you know what? If I had an I'm an honor. honor roll son i would put it right next to my Mitch please bumper sticker and i would have so i'm very happy for her it's awesome so 859 2807 who's up first shan mattox maddox go ahead maddox hey matt first time caller who i um so you asked how i thought about caliperi being back um after we lost to oakland i was like let's fire him let's get him out of there but then i slept on it and i was
Starting point is 00:20:46 like, you know, if we got rid of him, I think it would make things so much worse. We'd lose all of our recruits and have to have a new relationship with a new coach. And Calipari would probably go to who knows where and win a championship somewhere and we'd just be sitting around. Well, first of all, that could happen. I mean, that is the worry if you would ever let go of him. But I would say this. On the new, unless he coaches until he's 150 years old, what you just said about we'll lose all our recruits. You realize that'll be true. any year he leaves, right? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:20 I mean, but you're right. I appreciate the call. I actually think what Maddox said was probably a major factor in the final decision, which is what I talked about as Caliperi 2.0. I think Calipari 2.0 really worried the UK administration, which is Calipari goes and pulls, as Drew said, a Ryan Lemon. I don't know if you heard this. Drew called this you.
Starting point is 00:21:46 which is goes, gets in shape. I heard this. It gets hair plugs and like all of a sudden is rejuvenated with a new wife and then crushes it. I think that is a worry because if that happened, our fans would lose their mind. And knowing John Caliperi, he would have done that. He would have done it. Yeah. Well, he would have tried to do it, whether he would have succeeded, who knows.
Starting point is 00:22:12 But if we had let him go, he ain't retired. like that. He's not going out like that. And I get that. I share that trait with him. If I heart fired me, I'm not going home and like milking cows, because first somebody would have to teach me how to do it. But then I'm going to another radio station, and I'm going to try to beat them down, right? He would have been the same way. I felt like, you know, in Kentucky, too, with coaching, great good drunk, great good drunk,
Starting point is 00:22:38 the next coach wouldn't be great. He'd be good. I mean, you know, that's just a pattern. It doesn't have to be like that. Like, we're not required to go hire a drunk. It's not like required by law. We can go get someone that's 100% sober. And it is okay. Two hours away from Bobby Huggins being.
Starting point is 00:22:55 Yeah, I mean, we could just skip and hire Bobby Huggins. Well, there are people who've argued, Matt, is, is Cal doing the great good? And now we just do a drunk. Oh. And just, we could have just been, let's just do Bob Huggins and then move on. No, I think. Now's not a drinker, but those results have been drunk. I think that two, I think that two points.
Starting point is 00:23:15 0.0 thing is, was a real issue that Maddox talks about. Who's next? Bram. Bram. And by the way, Maddox saying, I wanted to fire him the night of, and then I kind of changed my mind. I think that is something that a lot of fans did think over the time. But go ahead. Yeah, it's still Bram. Bram. Hello, a long-time listener, first-time caller from Shelbyville.
Starting point is 00:23:39 What's up? What's up, Shelbyville? We've got some people in the restaurant from Shelbyville. There you go. So I think this whole show with Mitch and Cal has proved that they have felt the pressure from the fan base. Yes, I agree. And for me personally, after last season, I was ready to move on. And I understand that a lot of people weren't. But I think this whole show that they have put on has proved that this season is going to be the tell-all season.
Starting point is 00:24:10 And at the end of the day, I'll be okay with that. I'll live or die with whatever happens. I think that's fair. That's fair. Yeah. I might have to go to break. The heart break's coming. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:24:21 But I agree with everything he just said. This will be the Baker break. But let me say this. Mitch going, we have a relationship. Of course. That was garbage. Say otherwise. People who have a great relationship don't have to tell you they have a great relationship.
Starting point is 00:24:36 I mean, let's be right. We'll be right back. It's thank you sports radio. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Starting point is 00:24:52 This is kind of how Drew sounds. I think it sounded just like John Legend. Somebody wrote me and goes, Matt, I didn't realize we have a Kentucky Joe and a Kentucky Drew. I'll do a little duet with Kentucky Joe, maybe some shallow. You know what, maybe the two of you could be at the 500 Club as an opening night. There we go. Kentucky Drew and Kentucky Joe come together and do it. I'll do with him anytime.
Starting point is 00:25:18 One person writes, Matt, I've watched online for the last four or five days. I don't know how you deal with all these people with their comments. Do you think these people even listen to the show? No. 95% of the criticism of KSR and me are people who don't listen. They are told something, and then it's the telephone game. They're told he said, then he said. And then it comes a point where, like, whatever bad happens,
Starting point is 00:25:46 will just say it was mad. I mean, that one little tweet or the little thread with all the rumors yesterday, I specifically said I didn't know anything about any of that. By the end of the night, I was the one that had written that. And people who know, no, I don't write anything. So, you know, I don't know what to say to those folks. Most of the people, though, that hate KSR will, if you ask them, say, I don't listen. So, like, how do you even know what we say?
Starting point is 00:26:13 KSR is so negative. You're spoiling the fan base. You don't even listen. You don't even know what we say. So like, it's, it's, they're just talking about a person, Ryan, that doesn't even exist. Because I will say, if I'd said all the things I get attributed to me, I'd worry about me too. But like, I don't say those things. Most people hear what they want to hear.
Starting point is 00:26:37 They hear what they want to hear. Yeah. And they don't hear what they don't need to hear. But I will, I will see. If you have a clip, I'm fine with playing a clip and going. and if it's in context going, Matt shouldn't have said this. Because sometimes I look back and go, man, I wish I hadn't said that. But when you just say Matt said this and then I didn't or it's out of context,
Starting point is 00:26:57 like how am I even supposed to defend myself? One thing I agree with Cal, is Cal said last night, I can't defend myself against everything everybody says. He's right about that. You can't because you don't even like, what are you going to say? I will say this. A friend of mine, and you guys, friend of you guys too, works deals in crisis. crisis management, and he said that that's exactly what Mitch and John should have done last night.
Starting point is 00:27:21 Sit side by side, show some solidarity, we're on the same page, we're going to get this right. They felt like that was the right thing to do. Do you agree with that? Yes. I think they should have done a real press conference and taken real questions. But if you're not going to do that, I think what they did was the best thing they could. I mean, this is Noah Fentz-Fence to Keith Farmer, who I like. I feel the same way I did about Tom Leach's show on Monday.
Starting point is 00:27:47 Those guys are putting an impossible position. They can't ask a hard question. They're basically working for UK. So they can't. But like, I still think the two of them should take real questions. You know, in a couple weeks, Jerry Tipton has a book coming out. We're going to have Jerry Tipton on the show. I used to think having Jerry Tipton in the media was the worst thing in the world.
Starting point is 00:28:11 When he comes in here, I'm going to apologize to him because I think you, need a Jerry Tipton. Yep. You do. You need one. Now, you don't, the problem for a while is Jerry Tipton was like the only person in the media. And that's not what you want. But nowadays, you need a Jerry Tipton.
Starting point is 00:28:29 You need one person to ask the hard question. And but if you don't take a press conference, nobody can ask any questions. So I wish they had done that. Absent that, though, I agree with your friend, like sitting there together is good. Yeah. Showing solidarity. We're on the same page. we're going to get this right.
Starting point is 00:28:47 One person writes, Matt, do you all think that if things don't work out next year, they both leave? Yeah. I do think they've kind of set it up. I think Mitch is close to leaving anyway, just in terms of, I think Mitch is headed towards the last. I think it was very important for Mitch, and people close to him have said that, to get the women's basketball program on the right path, okay, to get that Memorial Coliseum thing done. to get the baseball program turned around. Like those things matter to him.
Starting point is 00:29:23 I could see him going, okay, if it's time to go in a different direction in basketball, that should be someone else's thing to do. Does that make sense? That's why it's so hard for us to kind of say what he should and shouldn't do. If he knows he's leaving next year, I completely understand why he wouldn't want to make the hire for the next person. I agree with that completely. Yeah, I mean, we don't know anything what Mitch is his brain.
Starting point is 00:29:48 But if he knew he's got a foot out the door, it would make complete sense to want to ride it out with Cal and step out. That's why when we're all on the outside, we don't know what cars they have in their hands. I don't know what players are coming back. So we just know what we know on our end. And if Mitch were to think he were leaving soon, I think it would be the right decision to ride out of Cal.
Starting point is 00:30:05 If you look at the overall of UK athletics, this is a big, like, transition year. Memorial Coliseum reopening. So all the things that play there are about to go into a new renovated, updated home. And that includes volleyball, gymnastics, women's basketball. Now they're all going there, right? They just opened a new baseball field a few years ago. They just did this huge renovation in football.
Starting point is 00:30:33 Like, this is a time that you could see him saying, because I do think he really cares about who he gives it to next. It is time to pass it on to someone next. Who's next year? Rob. What's up, Rob? Hey, first time in a long, long time. All right, well, I can't give you the hoo-aw, but welcome. All right, well, I like Cal and I like Mitch, but I want to talk about real quick comments. He talks about the transfer portal.
Starting point is 00:31:01 Well, you'll be successful one year, then flop. We've been a flop for five years, guys. One year, Matt, save you job. I don't believe, though, I don't believe we're a flop in the transfer portal. We had the national player of the year in Austin. Oscar Sheebley. We had an All-American in Antonio Reeves. I think Kell and Grady, David Elman's were good. I mean, we have been a flop on the floor, but I don't think the guys we've gotten in the transfer portal have been flops. No, I was quoting Cal. He said if you go
Starting point is 00:31:30 aggressively after the transfer portal, a lot of these guys go one year and then they flop. Well, so that's also true of his one and done's though. That's right. And I'll say this as my last comment. You know, they talked about finishing well. But why? Watching them with that WWE and belt in the background, watching Coach Cal, coach is kind of like watching Rick Flair wrestle these days. He's just, he's got the same old moves, but time has moved on. Appreciate the call. I hadn't thought of that, but that belt was cool, though, Shannon.
Starting point is 00:32:06 I know. It did look like, like if they put those for sale, how many people you think would buy, like, one of those WWE. Oh, they're online. They're sold out. It's $500 to buy that and they're sold out. $500 a lot. I saw a little birdie on Twitter said that Mitch wanted to make sure the belt was in the frame.
Starting point is 00:32:25 So he's very proud of that belt. It's a cool belt. When did he get it? Why did he get it? Like, did he just buy it? People love belts. Shannon, you know this. When we got that country boy Kentucky title, which they retired as soon as I stopped running day-to-day operations.
Starting point is 00:32:39 I love that belt. I help design that belt. They throw it in the river. They didn't. And they were like, Matt's not running day to day. Give the belt of somebody else. People just like touching it and putting it on their shoulder and taking a picture. Like, people like belts, Shannon.
Starting point is 00:32:56 You know what I mean? Yeah. It's just. Everywhere I go, everybody wants to touch the radio heavyweight title. Everywhere I go, I can't even get out my door without people trying to touch it. Shannon, I don't know about all that. When are you ever going to defend that? When's the last time you've seen the title?
Starting point is 00:33:09 It's ragged. It's torn apart. It's because I defended all the time. Have you defended it since COVID? Oh, yeah. Like 100 times. Do you even watch the product? When's the last time you've defended it one-on-one?
Starting point is 00:33:20 Oh, my God. Like, it's been so often, I can't keep up with it. I mean, a lot of times. A lot of times. A lot of times. Longest raining. Yeah, long as raining. Yeah, well, there you go.
Starting point is 00:33:34 Chris. Chris, go ahead, Chris. Shut up. Hey, first time, long time, guys. So I got a quick comment and then a quick question. for you guys. So my comment is that I kind of agree with Maddox, and, like, first, I wanted Cal Fire, too. And I've kind of come around on it just because, like, I believe that for next season, Cal gives us the highest ceiling.
Starting point is 00:34:01 But I don't think there's any coach that we could bring in that could bring us the potential. I think that's true. If you're looking just at next year, Cal gives you the highest ceiling next year because you're going to have to rebuild your roster completely when he leaves. But I would also note that will be true every year in perpetuity. Right, right, which brings me to my like quick question. So Ryan has said that he doesn't think that Mitch wants to be the person that has to fire the Hall of Fame coach and Cal.
Starting point is 00:34:33 So if he leaves and Duane Peavy takes over, you think he's going to do it? Yeah, that's a good question. Great question. That's a great question. I don't know. No. But I think, yeah, I don't know. That's a good question.
Starting point is 00:34:48 But I don't know. I appreciate it. I don't know what's going to happen next year. Appreciate it. Appreciate the call. I do think if Mitch leaves, Dway, will be the AD, although I will say, like,
Starting point is 00:34:59 you know, Dwayne hired a basketball coach it didn't work. Now he has another one. That one needs to work. Yeah. For Dwayne to be the AD here, Chris Holpman needs to work at DePaul. And I do think you should kind of watch and see how does Chris Holpeman do at DePaul.
Starting point is 00:35:13 I mean, it's going to take him a while there a couple of years, but like it will be important. He can't have two basketball hires, not work, and then get this job. But I think if it works, if you want to know who the next AD is, watch DePaul basketball next year. If Chris Holman turns DePaul around, Dwayne Peevies the next AD here. If it doesn't, then I could see them looking in another direction. Because he's got other sports at DePaul.
Starting point is 00:35:37 I follow it. I'm actually a DePaul donor. They're aggressive. They are very aggressive at DePaul. Paul's sports have all gotten good, but basketball hasn't, and that's going to be what matters if he's to get the job here. Well, we were having his same conversation about Mitch after he'd hired Billy Gillespie and Joker Phillips.
Starting point is 00:35:56 We'd like, okay, your next two hires, they've got to work. And they did. They hired Mark Stoops, John Caliperi. It worked. Yeah. Clark's Pubbets Shop has a new location on Lucille Drive. Get out of town. Stop in for all your favorite drinks and snacks,
Starting point is 00:36:09 sausage egg and cheese, bacon egg and cheese, sausage biscuit. They got pizza, Cajin. They really have Cajun in a gas station. Even those breakfast sandwiches are awesome. Well, you know, you walk there. I walk there and they're really good. They serve the freshest coffee and there's one near you. And even if you don't think there's one near you, there is.
Starting point is 00:36:26 Ryan will tell you. Go to Clark's Puppet Shop and you earn five cents per gallon on every gas fill up. It's Clark's Pumping Shop. There's a big controversy in state high school basketball. Yeah. We'll address it when we return on KSR. How about that tease? Welcome back.
Starting point is 00:36:42 This is Skinnerd, right? That's right. Leonard Skinnerd tonight in Lexington here. Skinnerd and ZZ Top. Yeah, ZZ Top. I didn't even know ZZ Top was still going. I know Skinner's on like their eighth iteration, though. Is there anyone in Skinner who was in Skinner originally?
Starting point is 00:37:00 No, not a single member. That's pretty amazing. 200 years from now, when we're all dead and gone, Leonard Skinner will still be going strong. How are they allowed to still do that? I don't know. I mean, is in sync? Can they just put four? I mean, that's what they do in, like, Minuto.
Starting point is 00:37:15 Yeah, they did. Yeah, they did. Like, shuttling kids in and out of it. Yeah. I think once the last original member's gone, you got to have a new name. Well, they're doing it. Skinnered and ZZ. Is it the same bearded ZZ top people?
Starting point is 00:37:28 Well, Dusty Hill died a few years ago, so they get another guy with a beard up there. They just go to a country boy and get one of them. That's right. Yeah, pretty much. Next bearded guy up. Next bearded guy up. That's right. And Blackstone Cherry from Kentucky's opening the show.
Starting point is 00:37:42 I do like Blackstone Chair, yeah. So they're playing tonight at Rupp. We're having like a pre-party here where it'll be like a rocking good time. So if you're coming up to the concert, come on here before. Also the Reds, during that, the Reds opening day game will be on here as well. So a lot going on here at the bar. So come on out tonight if you would like and go see Skinner and ZZ Top and Blackstone Chair. Red's game starts at what time?
Starting point is 00:38:07 4-10. Okay. 4-10. I'm leaving like literally right after this. Tell me about this. So in Monticello, Wayne County High School, Rodney Woods, head coach for 38 straight years. Over a thousand victories, I'm told, in his career. Still won like the district title this year.
Starting point is 00:38:26 So he's still getting it done. He was fired yesterday in a move that is like the town is up, is in an uproar. Ryan, I know if there's one thing you know, it's small town gossip. Ryan has a person in every town that hangs out at the beauty shop or at the druthers and knows what's happening. So tell me what's going on. You're right. Rodney Woods is a legend. I mean, he is a legend in this state.
Starting point is 00:38:50 And I heard this story yesterday. Do you think so or do you know? Well, when I first heard it, I didn't think we would be talking about it. But then Larry Vaught wrote the exact same thing this morning. And I trust Larry Vaught. So I have two sources now. One of which, though, is an article. One is an article by Larry Vaught.
Starting point is 00:39:07 that the new principal, first year principal, Donnie Neal. Donnie Neal. What if I told you he's been holding a grudge for 10 years? He tried to become the superintendent at Wayne County 10 years ago. Rodney Wood's wife was on the search committee. Oh, come on, listen to this shit. That did not recommend Donnie Neal to be superintendent. So, I mean, Donnie Neal's wife didn't recommend his own...
Starting point is 00:39:32 Rodney Wood's wife... A Rodney Wood's wife... Was on the search committee. So is he the superintendent now? He just became first year superintendent. He's been a principal in the Wayne County School system. So you're saying, let me be clear, that the coach's wife did not hire the guy to be the superintendent. 10 years ago.
Starting point is 00:39:51 And then he became the superintendent. Yes. And you're saying he fired her because of the grudge. I want to know why she didn't recommend him. Like, where does that originate from? No, I don't know. And you talked to Larry Vaught about that. No, I have not talked to Larry Vaught about it.
Starting point is 00:40:04 I trust Larry Vaught. All right. But yeah, he's been a principal in the Wayne County school system and didn't get it last time. He got it. Boom. First move. No, he was hired in August. It wasn't his first move.
Starting point is 00:40:15 He's been there for a whole year, pretty much, one school year. He's been scheming. I think he's been scheming. I don't know. Biding his time. I believe that story, though. All right. So that's your, that's what's happened.
Starting point is 00:40:26 That's what's happened. All right. I'm going to ask the text machine. Is Ryan right? I know we have a lot of Wayne County lists. There you go. 772-7-7-4-5-254. I want to know if he's right.
Starting point is 00:40:35 Because if he's not, I want to make sure I met the Rodney Woods guy when I went and spoke at Monticell just about a month ago. He was very, very nice to me. And so I hate for him that this happened. Good guy. I mean, he's a legend in this day. Even though he played basketball at Tennessee, University of Tennessee. Oh, I didn't know that. Yeah, he's of all.
Starting point is 00:40:56 Well, you think that could be why they didn't hire him as the superintendent? I think it's because he didn't know how to play against the zone. I don't know what that means. Do you believe Ryan Stewart? I have no reason not to. I mean, I haven't done much digging on this story. Any, to be honest. But, you know, I got some friends in Monticello.
Starting point is 00:41:18 I can tell you, the people in Wayne... I'll send some texts around. People in Wayne County are upset. And I'm not kidding. Like, I got a lot of messages, Matt, dig into this. And, you know, if we didn't have all the stuff going on with the UK basketball, I would have. But there's the story, according to Frank, Lynn. And we'll see.
Starting point is 00:41:35 see if the people of Monticello agree. Okay. Who's up next? Ben. Ben, go ahead, Ben. Yeah, hey, it's Ben from Colesburg, first time caller. Who are? So my perspective is the same as a lot of these previous guys.
Starting point is 00:41:50 At the end of the day, I think it's got to come down to what other coach, game one next year is going to put a better roster on the floor. I just, I mean, I just don't see. But you know, by that standard, as I said, by that standard, Cal will win that standard forever. you know that right so like by that standard he should be coach for life because he'll always be able to put on a better roster than some coach we hire off the street yeah true also i think a lot of a lot of us fans need to put in some historical context i mean my math might be wrong but what are we at four final fours in 13 years is that like a 30% clip i mean i mean again but historical perspective with cow and i said that this on the SEC network today. It all depends on how you look at it.
Starting point is 00:42:39 All right. If you want to look at all 13 or 14 years, historically, Cal has been as good, if not better than Kentucky basketball. Historic. Sure. If you want to look at the last four years, it's been as bad a run as we've ever had in the history of our school. So which one matters to you more?
Starting point is 00:42:57 That's what you have to decide. And if you put me in court and you asked me to defend Cal, I could defend it. If you put me in court and you asked me to say it was time for a change, I could do that too. But it all just depends on what you want. Do you think the 13-year run matters most, or do you think the last five years matter most? Well, I think you've got to look at it as a whole. And I mean, just as an example, might be a poor example, but Tom Izzo hasn't stepped off a bus since the year 2000. And I don't see them.
Starting point is 00:43:30 But Tom I'm in the last five years has been a lot better than we've been. I mean, that's, I guess that's arguable as an 80 this year. They did win a game. Yeah, but I mean, go back and look. I mean, I think if I'm correct and if I'm wrong, I'll say it. I think he's done a lot. I think he's been to a final, at least elite eight, maybe even a final four. Well, yeah, he went to a final four design year.
Starting point is 00:43:54 They won the last head to head too. Yeah. So, you know, again, it's all about what you think is the right time frame to look at. We'll take a break. Be right back. Hour number two. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends.
Starting point is 00:44:11 Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
