Getting into the weekend, Rupp Arena, Shannon, has Fall Out Boy this weekend.
I've heard of that, but I don't know what it is.
Do they have a famous song?
Yeah, I'll play some for you.
All right.
You'll recognize it when he plays it.
I mean, I've heard of them, but I don't know what the song is.
I know Jimmy Eat World.
Is that the same kind of thing, Shannon?
Yeah, I mean, sort of similar, yeah.
Do you sing us a fallout boy song?
No, no, we don't.
Well, they are up.
They are up tomorrow night, and we are here.
Opening day was yesterday.
There's a lot of news on the way home.
The turkey hunter bet me if I would talk about this in the first segment,
and I'm going to.
Just to win the bet.
Well, he said I would.
I said I wouldn't, but I wouldn't.
I'm going to let him win the bet.
Well, because I'm excited about it.
So yesterday, opening day, couldn't have been better.
Reds win 8 to 2.
It was a beautiful day.
That's the most people I've ever seen there.
You know, I always tell you, it's a circus at that.
Yeah.
That was the biggest circus.
People are excited about the team.
I've never seen that many people.
They were, I mean, not just at the stadium outside this.
You know how Nashville is during the SEC tournament where people just all staying and watch that.
That was how it was yesterday.
It was, for me, it's too many people.
But it's still kind of amazing that not that many people.
But the most important thing to me, Drew, is I don't know that I've ever gotten a better parking spot.
This is what you're leading with today.
I don't know that I've ever gotten a better parking spot.
Tall had a garage pass.
And you know, I hate parking in a garage.
You know me why.
Because you get stuck coming out of it.
And you can't move and I can't do any of my zipping, you know, because you're just stuck.
but he had a garage pass
and opening day is almost impossible
to find anywhere to park in Cincinnati
so he had the garage pass I'm like okay
we pull into the garage
like by a miracle
of our Lord and Savior
the first spot
when you pulled in was open
oh my how's that possible never possible
the whole thing is almost full and we pull in
right there I'll be we got out of the stadium
in maybe and onto the interstate
in maybe three minutes after the game
and you stayed for the whole game
stayed for saw the final out and we got out of there in three minutes Shannon I don't know that
I've ever been more proud of just as a as a human I'll put that up there amongst my greatest
accomplishments was getting out of the Reds without any problem I love how much satisfaction
that now gives you how quickly can you get in and out of any I know that's what makes people old
Shannon that you want to get out I'm fine with that yeah as long as I can get out quickly drew
that makes me very happy it's impressive you did it with the crowd
that I saw.
You mentioned it being a record, but some of those views, I guess they're standing on top of bars,
or they just filmed that whole street.
It was crazy.
It was unbelievable.
Cincinnati does that in such a weird way.
Now, you won't know who, Shannon Drew may not know who this person is, but do you know
who Bill Cunningham is?
Yeah.
Okay, so I guess he hosts a radio show in Cincinnati for like 40 years.
12 to 3.
He was the guy that had Huggins on when Huggins said that.
Oh, yeah, okay, yeah.
Okay.
That man, I've never one time listened to that man.
In my entire life.
I know he's an eye heart person.
That's fine.
I've never listened to him except that little clip we played.
Yes.
He's the guy who originated the phrase,
you're a great American that John Short always says.
Did you know that?
I thought John Short originated that.
John Short takes it from him.
I didn't know that.
I know John listens to him religiously.
So he was at the parade that they were having in Cincinnati.
He was interviewing people about the Reds.
And it was, I've never heard a human being,
Shannon, allowed on the public.
airwaves like him.
He was screaming like an old deranged human being.
He was interviewing the cowboy, Jeff Brantley.
And I'm not, I'm going to take my headset off.
So I'm going to do his volume, but I don't want to yell at everybody.
He'd go, why do players get hurt so much now, Jeff?
And he's screaming into the microphone.
And he's asking like old man questions that have never watched.
It was, I will tell you, Drew, the most entertaining thing.
Imagine you took the oldest person you know on Facebook and had them just asked the questions that they would have about sports.
I kept thinking he's going to say something that's going to get him fired at some point.
I kept thinking that.
But I did enjoy it because he was yelling, I think, because there was so much noise.
And anyone who heard it would agree it was ridiculous.
Ridiculous like if it were a weekly podcast, you'd tune in.
It was that ridiculous or hard to listen to?
I mean, after 15 minutes, you felt like you'd been put through a workout?
Because I wouldn't mind just listen to a cranky old person
Complaint about sports.
But a cranky old person who is at a parade so it's loud.
So he has to scream.
What? No, that's what he was doing.
He was like, he'd be like,
You think hell he's as good as Joe Morgan?
And like the guests would all be laughing because he was yelling
like this old incoherent man.
And Shannon, I have to tell you, it was high entertainment yesterday.
Where do I find this audio?
I don't know.
If he has a podcast, I don't know if he has a podcast.
If he does, you need to listen to him at the parade yesterday,
just screaming like an incoherent human being.
It was great.
And I did.
So it was just an overall wonderful day.
Is that how we sounded when we would be through the pregame at the catwalk?
It might be.
I mean, we would be standing in the middle of the band trying to preview the game.
But it wasn't just that he was yelling.
He'd be talking about Joe Nuxhall.
and like I kept thinking he was going to be like,
where they're going to throw the spitball?
It was just I thought it made for a fun after this.
I can't, I can't laugh too hard.
I feel like I'm just a couple years from getting to that point.
Oh, you are.
You are.
I could see you doing the same thing.
Why won't they put in Frank Ramsey?
I was that guy.
I told you all yesterday.
I was yelling at my TV.
Like, I don't want an app.
Where's baseball?
Yeah, well, you just did that earlier.
No, that was me.
I fired off three tweets about not being able to find baseball on TV.
Well,
So the Reds won, and we're 1 in 0, and it's very exciting.
You were telling me all those people that bet the prop bet, we ever be over 500.
You got it.
You won.
You already won.
You already won the bet.
And I'm still trying to figure out who on the team I hate.
It's probably going to be Tyler Stevenson.
Well, tell your Nick Martini's story.
That was a good story.
Nick Martini is like I thought the worst player on the roster.
So right before he gets up to hit, I go, this guy.
Why is this guy on the team?
And the next pitch he hits a two-run, home run.
And then the next time he hits Shannon, he hits a three-run home run.
And so now I guess I have to cheer.
You've got to put him on your roster now.
Maybe you're MVP right next to Ellie this year.
Yeah.
So congrats to the Reds.
And Cincinnati does that right.
They do do it right.
I don't know about you.
I've never, until I started getting Red Stick, I wasn't a Cincinnati person.
Even though it's so close, I just never went.
Uh-huh.
I feel like I am now.
There's something.
Well, that's why they get to do the first game, home game every year.
They do it.
They don't get to do that anymore.
They were hard.
I mean, there were games in Korea already.
I mean like their home game.
What do you mean?
Their first game is always a home game.
Their first game is always a home.
That's true.
Yes.
So, well, the other piece of news, and it came out while I was listening to Bill Cunningham's scream incoherent thoughts, is that a do is entering the portal.
I was, you know, I was a little surprised that that's the first person we heard about.
I think a lot of the year I assumed a do would come back.
There's still a chance he could.
I guess he can enter the portal and do it every once.
I mean, one of the things we're all going to have to be patient about,
and this is the new era of college basketball,
is we may not know what our roster is until June most years.
So, like, you can, you, you really never know what the team is going to end up like.
So you can't make huge judgments early on.
But with the due being gone, at least as of now,
what were your thoughts when that came out?
Well, I assume, just because it's the world we live in,
most of the roster will at least declare for the draft or enter the portal.
Now, they could come back, but that's just, that's how it works now.
I think most teams will have people do something like that.
I do.
I've kind of thought he'd probably leave.
I don't really know anything there.
I just feel like he's the type of guy.
Another school will call and say, we love you, come be our number one.
And I don't know that UK will ever, especially with six freshmen coming in.
Are you surprised because of the relationship with his dad and Cal?
I mean, that's how he ended up here.
Yeah, people forget his dad also transferred away from Cal when he played at Memphis.
So I didn't know that.
I'm not saying there's anything there.
I don't know their relationship.
But, I mean, he also did the same thing.
I believe he was a grad student, though.
I did not know that.
I don't know how big their relationship is.
I mean, if you follow his dad on Twitter, I think he didn't love.
His dad was very vocal on Twitter.
His dad certainly believed Adieu should play more.
I mean, that was, I think, a consistent theme throughout the year.
Well, Cal is pretty much all but admitted why he left Wagner and Edwards in.
We've all just accepted it.
But if you're a due and you felt like you could be offering more in that spot,
I could understand why you'd be heard a little bit.
But I don't know what's going on his brain.
He's number two on my wish list.
What do you think?
Adu Thierro is right behind Reed Shepard on Get Them Back.
What do you think about the news?
I just heard Cal Monday say he wanted his roster to be older next year and more physical.
And this could be your oldest, most physical guy returning.
And you at least what to be fair to Cal.
I mean, like, he could still get an older physical guy.
just might not be a do the hero yeah you know what I mean do left open the possibility um well I
I have to tell you I'm I'm I'm disappointed because I love the kid I think the kid is a great play
I mean he's not like he's not like the talent of some of the top guys we get but he's he is tough
I love the way he plays I love how hard he works and and I think he played through a lot of pain
this year. I mean, you could see on his face sometimes the pain he was playing through,
and I just hate to see him. I mean, I think there's a world where we have a completely different
roster next year. I mean, you heard my guests yesterday. Did I have anybody? Maybe Burks? Yeah,
I mean, I think you only had Burks. So I think with Purdue, excuse me, a do, it's not even,
it's not even really what we'll bring to the basketball. It's just a big PR move right now. You
could bring back a guy that came here as a freshman for a third year. You just, you just, you just,
just said you want to get physical and older and bring guys back. I mean,
Do is like the mascot of kind of saying, we're changing the culture a little bit and
guys are sticking around. So whatever he's going to be next year, and I think he'll be good.
If you look at the jump he made from year one to year two, I think it's just important to say,
hey, we have a guy that wants to be here. Yeah. So if he goes, you know, they've got six
freshmen coming in. Here's what, and I'm going to talk about the Sweet 16 a little bit later,
but David Sisk of Cats Illustrated, put up a post yesterday that blue,
my mind.
And I didn't, I looked at his research.
I don't have any reason to think it's not correct.
But I want to tell you this and see, see what you think.
David Sis said of the 16 teams that made the Sweet 16, their starting lineups, that's 80 players.
Guess how many freshmen started in the Sweet 16 for 16 teams total?
Three.
Wow.
I was going to say seven or eight.
Three of 80.
Wow.
We're freshmen.
Three.
Yes, I mean, that's amazing to me.
Sophomores, there were like 14, which means in the sweet 16, like, 60 or 70% of the players were juniors and C.
Yeah.
That's a massive change in just a short period of time.
And I think as you're thinking about roster building, that has to be on your mind.
I mean, when only three of the 80 guys are freshmen.
of the 16 teams that made the sweet 16, only Duke had a younger roster in the starting
lineup than ours.
Okay?
Yeah.
Only Duke.
But how about this?
When you add the top eight guys, so the eight players that play the most, we are the youngest
by far.
We would be younger than all of those teams by far.
So it may just be the point.
We just may have to completely change what we do.
I mean, if we're the, I know Cal says we're the youngest all year, and that's fine if you make it.
But if you don't make it.
He's already got six freshmen coming in next year.
That's the thing.
We already have six.
We're not going to tell those guys not to come.
No.
So we already have six freshmen.
So like, to me, don't you have to go get really old?
It's a good class, but the star of the class is Jaden Quatantz.
He's the only five star across the board, and he's 16 years old.
I want people to process that.
The number one player we have coming in next year is six.
He'll be 17 when the season starts, but he is 16.
He'll be in next year's NCAA tournament as a 17-year-old.
So, I mean, like, when Cal talks about the roster has to change,
like it might have to change dramatically.
Yeah.
Now, Shannon, I just sent you the link.
Somebody sent me Bill Cunningham screaming.
Oh, okay.
Oh, I need to hear this.
Okay.
So I, Bill, Bill, yeah, Bill Cunningham.
So I'll let you know which.
hour it is. I don't know, but I'll find out for you, but I want to play him yelling so you can hear
one. Okay. We will take a break. We'll be right back. We're here at KS. Bar and Grill. It's
Tucky Sports Radio. Welcome back. Fallout boy. Yeah. Sounds great. You know the song, don't you?
I do. I've heard it. Yeah. I wouldn't have, like, been able to sing it or anything. But
859-280-2-82. One person writes, Matt of the 80 players in the Sweet 16, how many were fifth and
six-year players? There were a decent,
It was, there were like 17 grad transfers, which would be fifth year players, but I think only like three or four were six year.
So that's another thing.
I mean, the grad transfer rate will go down, but this, there's 25, 26, 27.
That's not really true.
There's a lot of seniors and there were a decent amount of grad seniors, but let's remember, we had two of them.
Yeah.
I mean, we played two.
We played Antonio Reeves and Trey Mitchell.
So, um, Gokie was like a year older than Reeves.
Would you rather have 23-year-old Reeves or 24-year-old Golky on your team?
Yeah, you'd rather have Reeves.
So age, you can't complain about that.
Yeah.
Look at the Sweet 16.
By the way, Vince Mero will be on here at 11 a.m.
He's going to talk about the John Legend thing.
Well, I guess as much as he's allowed to talk about it.
I don't know what he's.
And he was at Leonard Skinnered last night?
Yeah, he's a big Leonard Skinner guy.
Is he really?
No, he is.
He likes Freebird.
You know that, right, Shannon?
Doesn't he?
Don't you?
Talking Vince.
I'm sorry I was listening for this clip.
Yeah, Vince got up and sang Leonard Skinner with us in Nashville.
Yeah, he's a big Leonard Skinner guy.
Shannon's trying to find the clip of that guy.
I've got it.
I don't know what part you want to hear, but I can.
Well, I just want to hear him when he's yelling.
Do you have that when he's like, just look for one where he's, where it's, it's less what he says than when he yells.
He did it with Jeff Brantley and maybe a little bit in the hour before that.
But we'll tell you, you can tell me when you find it.
All right.
the women's coat.
Did you watch the Sweet 16?
I watched it until I fell asleep.
First game was great.
Arizona and Clemson.
I thought that was a great game.
Second game was a blowout.
Third game was great, but I fell asleep.
I didn't make it to the fourth game.
You didn't make it to the fourth game.
You didn't make it to the end?
The most exciting game of the tournament?
You didn't make it to the end of it?
Nate Oates gets his big win.
Alabama's only been, this is only the second elite eight they've ever been to.
They've lost in the Sweet 16, like, the last six times they went,
and then they win this one against a very good North Carolina team.
Were you surprised?
No, I bet on BAMB, but I did watch all three games.
I even tried to stay up for the fourth one, but it's too late.
I guess I'm finally that age where I can't catch the fourths.
When did you guys get so old?
I mean, the game did it end?
Like midnight?
All right, yeah.
That's all that's late.
What time do you get up?
Well, I get up at seven, and then I go back to sleep for about an hour.
So what time do you go to sleep?
Are you like, you're sleeping like nine hours a night?
I try to get to sleep between 11, 1130, usually trying to somewhere in there.
You sleep nine hours?
Sometimes, yeah.
That's why I'm fresh.
Are you?
Yes.
But don't you take a nap?
Oh, yeah, afternoon nap for the best.
How much do you sleep?
He's a vaughn, remember?
I'm a vaughn, I can sleep all day.
All right, so how much do you sleep?
I try to get my seven.
I'm usually up by 7 o'clock at the computer, have my coffee.
Shannon, you sleep like me.
You sleep like six hours, right?
Yeah, sometimes five and a half.
If I get a really good night's sleep, maybe seven most of the time.
I'm about six to seven.
And if I get to seven, I feel really good.
If I get to eighth, then watch out world.
I'm about to start a new company or something.
I'm not going to bed at 9 o'clock, but I was, I could not make it to the end of that fourth game.
Well, it was a good game, though.
So Alabama was up five with three and a half minutes to go.
Then North Carolina scores eight straight points, goes up three with like a minute and a half, maybe a minute.
And then one of their do, Alabama scores, so it's a one point game with like 48 seconds left.
Carolina leads.
And Carolina's center that's not Baycott.
Yeah.
Some other dude, Withers, takes a three.
It only taken like six all year.
And he takes a three and misses it.
And it was like, and there were still 20 seconds on the shot clock.
It was one, it's one of those shots that like North Carolina fans will remember forever and go, why did you shoot that ball?
Yeah.
That one, because it was early in the shot clock.
and he didn't need to shoot it.
And the RJ Davis dude was like playing well at that point.
It was a terrible, terrible shot.
RJ Davis had a visible reaction when he shot it.
Oh, he should.
I don't think he'd let go with the ball.
And you could see RJ Davis, like, those hands in the air.
Like, what are you doing?
It was such a terrible shot because, I mean, they weren't even guard.
It would be the equivalent for us if Hugo took the three.
Yeah.
I mean, that's what it was like.
Oh, and either right before that or right after that,
Armando Becott had a wide open dunk and just kind of bobbed the ball.
I thought North Carolina was going to win it.
He dunks that. They probably do in it, but those two moments killed them.
And now eight oats can make the final four.
Yeah.
I mean, Clemson is very beatable.
So you might end up with Alabama in the final four.
That dude will be insufferable if that happens.
Clemson, you know, you're going to give them credit.
They've knocked off two powers to get where they are now.
Clemson's coach?
Oh, yeah, he's from Evansville, Indiana.
What's his name?
Brad Brownell went to Evansville Harrison High School,
played with Calbert Chaney in high school.
Okay, well, that was more than I need to know.
I just wouldn't know if you knew his name.
Who's up next?
Let's start with Rob.
Rob, go ahead, Rob.
Yeah, do you think that the guys entering the transfer portal
are doing it to maybe negotiate some NIL deals?
Well, I mean, I'm sure that's part of it,
but it may also be to leave, you know.
I mean, everybody is speculating.
I can only tell you what I've heard,
and what I've heard is that, you know,
they weren't thrilled with the amount of time they were playing.
and probably want a bigger role, which also probably means more NIL.
Would you agree with that, Drew?
Yeah.
And I think it's just obvious to everyone at this point.
I know he says there's not favorites, but I mean, come on.
So if you're not in that group, I could see why you would want to see if someone else out there will say,
hey, we'll make you the number one guy.
Yeah.
It is tough to play here.
This is the pro and con with Cal.
The pro is if you're one of Cal's guys, he does.
And first of all, he cares about all the players.
It's not fair to say he doesn't care about the players.
He cares about all of them.
But when you're one of his guys, he will protect you.
Like, he will.
He will protect you.
And like, but if you don't feel like you're one of those dudes, it's hard.
I mean, again, look at Antonio Reeves.
He didn't play the first half of his junior year a lot.
And then all of a sudden, Cal kind of embrace.
I think a do is one of his guys in theory.
But when it comes to playing time, he just didn't play as much.
And if you're a do and you're thinking, I want to be a star.
I mean, I've heard just from people talking that two schools he's very interested in are North Carolina and Pitt.
You know, we have a staffer at North Carolina.
I don't know if that'll have any impact one way or the other.
Pits where he's from.
So we'll see.
I don't know this.
I would think probably a dude didn't get as much NIL money as the other guys on this team.
I'm sure that's true.
So maybe by him, you know, even to seeing what Pitt or North Carolina would offer him,
maybe Kentucky would match that.
Maybe it's his way he can get some in I-O. money.
Maybe, maybe.
All right, so you have Bill Cunningham here, Shannon?
Yes.
Here we go.
This is an example of what I'm talking about.
May I make one other statement before we go to you?
Sure.
Between 1975 and 1990, the Reds won 20% of all the World Series that were played.
Since 1990, it's been a little bit down.
Things are not been good.
But I sense in our conversations.
Brighter days lie ahead.
What do you see?
And what can you tell these desperate wretch fans who need glory?
That this year's team is going to be better than last year's team.
And better than the year before.
And better than the year before.
What do you see that the prognosticators do not see?
And finally, what is wrong with Hunter Green?
Why isn't he starting?
Answer one of those questions, please.
It's pretty aggressive.
Pretty aggressive.
I mean, he's just yelling and like, hey,
We want 20%.
I'll need to listen to it for a while.
We'll be right.
PJ Smith, personal injury attorney.
Call T.J.
He'll make them pay.
Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Here's Matt Jones.
Welcome back, Tucky Sports Radio here live at KS Bar and Grill.
You can come out and have a good Friday lunch with us.
We'll open here in 30 minutes, but you're more than welcome to come and listen to the show until then.
People are trying to talk about who Bill Cunningham sounds like.
a lot of people say Joe Biden
I think he does
it's Ryan Lemon's Joe Biden
that hey hey hey
one person says
Will Ferrell's Harry Carey
that's a good one
That's a good one yeah
And one person says Matt in about 20 years
You need to slow
That's not that's not what I sound
I do you know I know I yell a little bit
But it was I feel like when we're in public
I don't know
Don't go get my voice and then try to match it up
Because if it sounds like it, I don't want to know that.
One person says, Matt, Bill Cunningham's been a radio legend for years.
How could you not know him?
I mean, I know who he is.
But it's like he does like conservative political talk.
I'm not going to sit and listen to that all day.
So like I knew who he was.
But it's not my thing.
He opened that restaurant there by the bridge and river called Willys.
That's his place too.
I don't know if it's still open anymore anymore.
Is that right?
Yeah.
Oh, okay.
All right.
So what about the Louisville coach?
So they got the new Louisville coach.
He seems like an absolutely insane man.
But if I'm a Louisville fan, I'm excited, to be honest with you.
I mean, he gets up there.
He tells this two-and-a-half-minute story about how he had a dream that he was in heaven.
Did you hear this story?
I did.
Yeah.
The dream was like I was walking through the pearly gates and I see St. Peter.
Then I walk by a house and it's got a Jayhawk on it and that's Bill Self.
Then I walked by another house and it's got, you know, something else on it.
and it's Tom Izzo, and then he's like, and then I walk by a house and it has a Bentley in front of it,
and it's all pimped out, and it's John Calipari.
Then I walk by a red house, and it's beautiful.
And I said, is that the U of L house?
And they said, no, that's where God lives, which is like.
God lives in the U.S.
You think God lives in the U.S.
God doesn't want to lose?
I mean, no offense.
You think God wanted to spend the last 15 years with what happens at that school?
You got it backwards.
Louisville's house needs God.
Yeah.
But nevertheless, the U.S.L fans ate it all up.
Yeah.
Right?
Like they ate it up.
They ate it up.
He said it was the best job in the country, which I'm more high on Louisville's job than anyone,
but it's not the best job in the country.
But he said that.
And then I'm going to give him a lot of credit.
Last night at 11 o'clock, he was on a Twitter space with like 3,000 Louisville fans,
just answering people's questions and talking.
That's pretty good outreach.
I'm not going to lie to you.
I mean, that's a, that's,
whoever's helping his PR salute.
That's smart.
I will note that Shannon, my Twitter space had 10,000.
So when Louisville fans try to act like they're somehow in Kentucky's ballpark,
slow down.
With all that said, if I'm a Louisville fan after I see that, I'm probably excited.
I think, you know, he's got to do things like that to win the fan base back.
And so if doing a Twitter space helps win the fan base back, go for it.
Seems like they're all injured.
I mean, it seems like they really, that they're all in.
The Pearly Gage joke, that was funny when I heard it when I was 10.
That one's been used a lot.
I'll give him credit, though.
One thing, I thought the best thing he did is when he introduced his wife and he said,
I was her third choice too.
I like that.
That was a good joke.
When I saw that, I thought, oh, don't make me like you Louisville coach.
Then he did the other stuff.
I'm like, okay, you're corny.
But that one, I will pat him on the back.
He said something like, it's okay if I'm not what everybody wants.
Not everybody would want my looks or my hair line.
I thought that was good.
I mean, I like self-deprecating humor.
It's the best humor there is.
We're going to end up hating him, though, Shamed.
We have to.
Like, we will.
No, I don't think we have to try.
Well, after he threw up the stupid L, that was enough to make most Kentucky fans hate him.
He's just going to be one of the, you wait and see.
But he did say all the right things, though, that if that is your team, he says all the right things.
If I'm a Louisville fan and I'm at all worried about him as a coach, he would have won me over.
Now, with that said, winning the press conference doesn't mean you're going to win games.
but they're going to like him because I think he's going to pick at Kentucky.
Don't you?
Oh, I think we can see that coming.
I think he's going to pick it Kentucky and he's going to pick it Cal.
And I think that's going to happen, to be honest with you.
I want that.
I want that coach over there to kind of poke at us so we can not like you and feel that rivalry a little bit.
As long as he doesn't pick at Kentucky and then beat Kentucky.
We can't lose to.
Yeah, that's the thing.
Yeah.
But, you know, again, like this is going to be the kind of.
kind of thing where they have a chance to be good next year.
Like if he goes and gets players, you can turn a program around like this.
I mean, people don't, a lot of these teams are just turned around.
He can do that.
Oh, he can absolutely do that.
He's won everywhere he's gone.
Alabama's got a completely new team from the one they had last year and they're in the elite eight.
Yep.
No, he's a good coach.
He hasn't done at that level.
We'll see what kind of talent he can bring in.
But he's got a good resume.
And I understand if you're a little fan why you'd get behind him.
It doesn't have me shaking in my boots over here as a Kentucky fan,
but I understand why they're excited.
Here's another thing he is, and you'll watch this over the course of the year.
He's one of these dudes that, like, all the National College basketball reporters
hang out with him at the event.
They all love him.
Like, Jeff Goodman is basically saying he's the next John Wood.
And it's because you and I've seen this.
the coaches that take the reporters out drinking at the Peach Jam and stuff like that.
Yeah.
Then all of a sudden, like, those reporters are like, man, Pat Kelsey.
I mean, seriously, could you hire a better?
Is he the Tony Larusa of college basketball?
We're going to get a lot of that.
Bill Self can buy one round of beers at the Peach Jam and do whatever he wants for years and no one will criticize it.
Because he bought that round of beers.
Shannon, Drew and I watched it at the Peach Jam in Charleston or North Augusta.
North Augusta at the Hooters.
Drew and I went to Hooters and saw Bill Self just sitting there just like buying beers for all the reporters.
And the next day, everybody was like, Bill Self's a heck.
You're the reporter like, I can't write anything bad about the guy.
He bought me wings of Hooters.
No, listen, if Bill Self buys you wings and beer at Hooters, you're going to say he's a good coach.
And now he is a good coach.
But like that you're going to be a little buys.
When we were first going to the Peach Gym, flying private, they all do it now.
But Cal used to, like, pop in and out.
He would not socialize with anyone.
Remember, he might even go back to his own bed because he had that luxury.
But it's like, oh, Cal's not here.
He's not a Hooters, not buying beers with everyone, so he's the bad guy.
Yeah, Hooters, if you want to know what's going on in college basketball,
go to the Hooters in North Augusta during the Peach Jam.
Who's next?
E.T.
E.T. What's up?
Very long-time listener, first-time caller.
What's going on?
Who are.
Two things real quick.
I'll give you my perspective, but I have a feeling that BBN at large has the same.
Lifetime UK fan.
I love Coach Cal, a big supporter, but this year was my breaking year and I was ready to fire me, ready for him to go.
But now that he's back, I'll fully support the team, want him to win every game.
I'll be watching every game, group for them for the best.
I just cannot get emotionally invested in the team right now.
But thank God there's football.
Let's go, ready to go football.
Yeah, I think there's a lot of truth to that.
I mean, I think there's a lot of people that will be in your shoes.
I appreciate the call.
This idea of like, well, I didn't want him back, but he's back, so I'm going to root for him because what else am I going to do?
But I do think that what he said about he's going to have a hard time being invested.
I think people are going to be like that, Ryan.
They're going to be very hesitant to get their hopes up for a while.
I agree with the caller.
I kind of feel that same way, too.
I mean, he's a coach.
We've got our team.
We're going to go support him.
but I'm not going to be a little guarded, a little cautious about getting overly optimistic about what they can do next season after what's happened to us last couple of years.
I mean, I know I'm going to be all in because that's just how I get.
You know, for all the criticism online about how we're haters, a month before the tournament, I was saying we could win the whole thing.
So like I'm always all in because, but I think a lot of people are going to be like him.
Yeah.
Well, that was my whole point while I was ready to start new chapters on each side.
It had nothing to do with having faith in Cal or next year.
I just know this fan base has a big divide down the middle of it,
and I think it's going to be an ugly summer all the way up,
even after the game start playing.
There are some people that just will not buy in until March comes,
and I just think it's going to be a very uncomfortable year,
whether it's going well or not going well.
Yeah.
Who's up next?
Let's go to Chris.
Chris, go ahead, Chris.
Hey, guys.
Happy Friday.
Real quick, man, I heard that joke 30 years ago,
but it was UK, God's house was UK.
And that's how it should be forever and ever.
Amen.
I agree.
Okay, so I'll watch Kenny Brooks Presser yesterday,
and I'm super excited about this guy.
He is cerebral.
Yeah.
And I just, I'm excited about what he's going to put out.
And I'm with you guys.
I'm all in on the men's basketball team.
Always will be.
But I'm kind of excited to watch this.
women's team and I'm hoping that maybe that can just kind of be a buffer for the I agree with you
anticipated aches I'm gonna I want to talk about the the women's press conference yesterday because I
actually thought there were some really interesting things even if you're not a distinct follower
of the women's team and I my opinion mirrors his a lot but I'll I want to do that in a minute but
first let me say Ryan have you been overpaying for sunglasses I believe I have been for years what
By the way, you and Shannon are like leaving for Florida right after the time.
I'm like 45 minutes away from getting out of here.
It's been really hard for you.
It's just stress.
Are you leaving the show early today?
Yeah.
I mean, like you didn't even watch the games last night.
It's going to be tough.
I had to get my rest.
You need a break.
I mean, you will.
But I also need some new sunglasses for my bromance trip.
That's true.
And Shady Rays can do it.
Can they?
If you go down in the ocean and you and Shannon are out in the ocean tickling each other,
one of your sunglasses, one of your sunglasses falls out and it goes in the ocean.
you can just go to Shady Raise and get a new pair.
So like, don't worry.
Tickle away because Shady Ray's will help you.
They have the best sunglasses at the best price,
and they'll replace them if they're lost or broken.
Use the code KSR for 50% off, two or more pairs at Shady Ray's.
They're the tickle-fast sunglasses at Shadyrays.
Shadyrays.com, and there is one at the summit.
What city are you two going to be in?
Panama City Beach.
Okay.
You can come down and hang out with us.
What?
PCB.
PCB.
Panama City Beach.
High class stuff.
Yeah.
What is?
What are your plans?
Like, what are you going to do when you're there?
Well, you know, during the day, maybe hang out at the beach or the pool and then we get all fancied up, go out for a nice dinner.
What's fancied up?
You know, like shorts and a polo and my hey dude's shoes.
I'm bringing my hay dudes.
We're eating good.
Oysters, shrimp.
What's hay dudes?
It's a style of shoe.
Like what kind?
Oh, I don't have them on.
Yeah.
So like, oh, so do you show your toes?
No.
No.
Okay.
That's why he's wearing the haydance.
There's no way you can be fancy if you're, if your toes specifically are out.
We'll take a break and be right back.
This is Kentucky Sports Radio.
Welcome back.
It is Kentucky Sports Radio.
859-280-2287.
Text machine is 772-7-7-7-4-1-25-4.
One person writes, Matt.
Give us some people that will be on the roster for next year for Kentucky.
No idea. I mean, I know those freshmen that are coming will, but like in terms of transfers,
Kentucky's going to get linked to a lot of them and we'll end up with a few of them, but I got
to be honest with you. I'm not until I know that it's like down to Kentucky and somebody else,
I'm not going to kind of, I mean, you can't follow the whole country around because literally
it's free agency. They could end up with anyone. Yeah. So I mean, you almost just kind of have to
wait and see, all right, who do they really zero in on and then go from there?
They reached out to the Rutgers Cliff Amory big guy.
He's like an old school center.
I mean, you want to get physical.
That dude, that's a bruiser inside, but he's not much of a scoring threat.
Other than that, it could be anyone, like you said.
I mean, it could be anyone.
There's going to be guys at other schools that both enter the draft and the portal.
We won't know if they're staying in the draft or staying in the portal.
It'll be chaos.
What do you think about Kyle Tucker wrote yesterday, and he's been on this kick for a while?
Kentucky needs a GM of basketball.
Someone whose whole job is to know the country, who the players are.
and to also make sure that the players here are where they want to be going forward.
Do you agree with that statement?
I actually think it's a great idea.
I mean, it seems like that's something that's being kind of missing, I think, with the staff.
And you can have 45 assistant coaches, so why not add one like as a general manager type person?
I definitely think.
I don't, I think it's supremely necessary.
It is very important that we get our organization together, which brings me to the women's
basketball coach. So I watched last night when I got home, but while you were sleeping,
I actually did some work. And I watched the women's basketball press conference, and then I
watched the video. I have no idea how Kenny Brooks is going to do here. I think he's probably
going to do well. I mean, before he got there, Virginia Tech, they had never won 20 games in like 20
years. And then except for the COVID year, he won 20 games every year since 2014 there,
including going to a Final Four. So he's consistently good.
But put that aside, listening to him talk and listening to him talk about how he wants to build a program,
all I could sit and think is that dude's organized and that dude's smart.
Whether he's a good coach or not, I'm just going to assume by his results he is,
but I don't know him.
He's going to come on the show next week.
But you could just tell he's organized, right?
You could sit there and you could tell this is a guy who thinks about things in an organized manner.
And he talked about we have to do this, and then we have to do this,
and we have to do it a certain way and ber-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-r.
And I was thinking we need someone like that in the men's basketball, not necessarily the coach, but just someone who looks at things as sort of an organized, not like flying around manner.
They also debuted the new renovations at Memorial Coliseum.
They look amazing.
It looks like that's going to be a state-of-the-art facility when it really wasn't.
Going down from like 8,000 to 7,000 seats, but that's okay.
Yes.
It looks amazing.
and they needed that.
And then, you know, they've got some people returning.
But like the woman, the girl at Virginia Tech who was like all-American level,
she announced she's leaving Virginia Tech, but did not say where to.
She did not say she was going to transfer her into the WMBA.
You get her here, all of a sudden you get an all-American caliber talent the first year here.
Then all of a sudden, like, you're cooking with Greece, right?
Yeah, I've heard he was already doing well recruiting too just for the future.
hadn't really gotten people to sign yet,
but he's in with a lot of top prospects for the future.
I love that he said, it was my big takeaway,
that this is a sleeping giant,
and it just needs to be awakened.
That one got me fired up.
On top of seeing those renditions when he said it,
it's like, UK women's basketball,
once they turn the lights on in that new building
and debut this new era,
it could be the beginning of something very special
because he seems energized, locked in,
he's got the record,
and he's about to have the facility to do it too.
What do you think about him being the seventh high
paid coach in the country.
I mean, that's serious money.
Yes, it is.
The only people, just so you know, the only people being paid more than him,
the coach of South Carolina, the coach at LSU, the coach at Stanford, the coach at
Yukon.
I'm talking about people who won national titles.
Yeah.
Right.
Like, I mean, those are the only people being paid more than this guy.
Third highest in the SEC, right?
Yeah, behind Mulkey and Staling.
That's why you can never say that Mitch Barnhart won't invest in his program.
He's done it like on all sports with the facility.
or coaches, whatever, he'll invest in the program.
And I loved it when the guy said he wasn't really looking for a job,
but after he talked to Mitch Barnett, he saw the renovations,
two memorial calls him.
That was one of the big persuading factors for him.
He saw the facility.
It was interesting when they had the video of him showing him around.
It was clear it was the first time.
My favorite part of the video, if you watch it, and it's online,
is they show him the practice court, and he goes,
so what is this?
And they're like, it's your practice court.
And he goes, who do we share it with?
then he goes, it's just yours.
And he was like, really?
I thought that was great.
It was cool.
Because he was really, he was like, really?
This is just ours?
I have the key.
That was a really neat moment.
He also asked, do we have a target here?
He was somehow referenced target.
He's like, we have a target, Lexington, right?
You just tell he's just getting activated into there.
I didn't see that.
Well, he needs a, the man needs a target.
Who's next?
Kentucky Joe.
Kentucky Joe, how are you?
Oh, fine.
I'm going to say happy Easter to you all.
And I hope Ryan gets.
a nice sun tan down he needs it yeah he needs it he's been pasty there you go well coach cow
said earlier in the week that he's going to try to make us more physical so uh is the probably
we're going to do a bunch of weight lifting or i mean we're going to do what to get stronger i'm
talking about the big guys i'm you know i mean i don't know i'm sure they'll do strength training
but they do that now physical to me is less about just muscle than it's a state of mind of how
you play do you try to get away from
contact. Do you, are you, I mean, there are guys, like, I thought Antonio Reeves played physical,
but he's not a streak, like he, but he didn't shy away from talent or excuse me, from, uh, contact.
So I think when, when Kaus is playing physical, I think that's more of a state of mind even
than it is, uh, how big you are.
I'll tell you, I'll tell you. I mean, having, um, it'd be nice to have Antonio
Reeves back. The fellow, the guy was a leader for this team.
He was awesome. He was awesome. And I also apologize.
I should have, well.
All right.
I appreciate the call.
Let you start shuffling papers and stuff.
It's hard for me to hear you.
Who's next?
Let's go to John.
John, 45 seconds.
Go ahead.
Hey, Matt, real quick thing.
We're not the gold standard right now.
We need to be.
The one thing that's been consistent for UK basketball,
bar none in the history, is us.
The fans.
We all stick by it.
I hope and pray that this is a turning point.
We all get to that point in our lives and we go, oh, I better do something different.
Go cats.
Totally agree with you.
If it's not working and you keep doing the same thing, that's insanity.
We do have to change, and I'm hoping they do it.
I'm hoping that this week was the start of them doing that.
Vince Merrill will join us when we return right after this.
This is KSR.
Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.
