Matt, I really appreciate it. I tell you, I'm excited and I can't wait to get to work. You know, when your name sort of first popped up on this,
Starting point is 00:03:09 and I think I put out that you guys were, that you were a candidate, I was amazed, Kenny, I've been doing this a long time, at the universal praise that I heard, like the amount of people that wrote me and go, man, if Kentucky gets this guy, you all would be fortunate. Like just the amount of universal support you had, and it's got to make you feel good that since you've kind of been announced here, just how much positive energy has happened already? It is.
Starting point is 00:03:39 It's always great to be wanted. And, you know, this is a situation that, you know, I wasn't looking to move. But when it presented itself, you know, I just felt like it was a wonderful opportunity because I think U.K. is a sleeping giant in women's basketball. And there can be a lot of life put into it. And so I was just so excited. And then obviously to hear the praise or hear, you know, at what everyone was thinking, it makes you feel great,
Starting point is 00:04:03 makes you feel wanted. And it just puts excitement into it because you can go in there knowing that people will back you and they just want to winner. Well, let me talk to you about that. You said both in your press conference and now, UK women's basketball is a sleeping giant. That's the phrase I've heard you use a few times. Why do you say that?
Starting point is 00:04:20 Well, the name brand. When you think about Kentucky, you think about basketball. And obviously, on the men's side, there's been tremendous success in the past for years. And so I think that's just synonymous with women's basketball as well if you put the right effort into it. I remember when we were at Virginia Tech two years ago, we played Kentucky in the Bahamas. And I think we were ranked top 10 at the time. And when we beat them, it was a great feeling because we felt like we beat a name brand team. And so I think with the resources that are available,
Starting point is 00:04:50 the renovations to Memorial. Obviously, the landscape of college athletics is changing, and you want to align yourself with the best conferences. I think that we give ourselves a chance to win. And, you know, with the fan support, I played here. I can't remember. I coached here against Kentucky and Memorial. And the fan base was just unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:05:12 They were loud. They were knowledgeable. And I think we can get that going again. And it's just sleeping giant and it's been ready to be awakened. Yeah, you know, I was going to say it was a few. years back with Matthew Mitchell, there was a period here. It was rolling. I mean, they, they went to the tournament, lost to Yukon, a number, we're in Yukon's bracket a few times when Yukon was crushing everybody. But I mean, Drew and I went to an elite eight game up there against
Starting point is 00:05:36 Yukon in, uh, in Connecticut. So it was rolling. And the crowds were rolling. How do you get back to that? Because I went to some of those games early in the dawn stalil years with South Carolina, wild atmospheres. Do you think, how do you get back to that? Well, I think first and foremost, you have to recruit, you know, right type of young ladies, kids who are going to connect with the community. That's something that we did at Virginia Tech. You know, when I first got there, we were getting a thousand people at the games. And we went out and we recruited kids to our, to our program, to the university. They represented extremely well in the public, but also on the court. And we made it personal. We made them personable to the
Starting point is 00:06:18 to the fan base, made them accessible to the fan base, and then there became a connection. And then, of course, you have to win. You know, you have to get great players in there who are going to win. And then, you know, my last few years at Virginia Tech, and especially the last year, I think we sold out seven or eight games, and we were getting 9,000 people regularly.
Starting point is 00:06:37 And I think it has to be a concentrated effort. You have to go out and get the right types of people that are going to represent. And then when you do that and you add that with winning, I think it's going to really, really, you know, just energize the fan base because I think that they're ready to be energized, and then you can put out a great product. Drew and I were talking about we love the video where you saw the practice floor for the first time, and you were like, this is ours? I mean, so the facilities here, you've been everywhere.
Starting point is 00:07:04 How does Kentucky's facilities, specifically for the women's side, how do they compare to where they need to be to compete with the teams we're going to be watching play over the next weekend? You know, now, you know, with the renovations with Memorial, all the pitchers look fantastic. It's a perfect arena for women's basketball. You know, I've never seen a women's basketball game in Rupp, but I can imagine that even if you get, you know, 6,000, 7,000 people, you're going to feel empty because it's a 21, 22,000-seat arena. And this one feels great. It's a great size. Throughout the ACC, we played one of the best arenas I played in was in.
Starting point is 00:07:43 state arena. And they only had like 5,500, 6,000 people, but it sold out every night. Yeah, been in that building. That's a great building for a game. Yeah. Great building. Great building. Great building, lots of history. And it just feels good. You know, Carmichael at UNC. It just feels great. And I think Memorial has that same type feel where you're going to feel a really connection with the fans. And that will give you a home court advantage. And then, you know, you look around and, you know, just also the renovations to the locker room. They mirror the men's locker room. the spaces are very similar. And I think that just really puts you at an advantage because, you know, kids,
Starting point is 00:08:20 they do want to see some bells and whistles when they come through, you know, and, you know, along with the facilities and NIL opportunities, I think those are very, very important, just as important as anything else. Obviously, education is you going to push first, but it's a changing landscape. And I think the facilities are really going to help us recruit talented young ladies to come to Kentucky. All right. So let's talk about that landscape because we know. for men's basketball. We've spent a lot of time on it. We know for men's basketball what NIL and the
Starting point is 00:08:49 transfer portal have done to the sport. You see it and who's in the final four this year. Tell me how NIL transfer portal has worked in women's basketball and I think a big part of success on the men's game is who's adapted quicker. How do you adapt quickest on the women's side? I tell you, it is, it's a mirror image of what the men programs are going through. I mean, maybe, maybe, maybe a year behind. Okay. I'll tell you to change. Last year, the NIL opportunities were not as abundant as they are now.
Starting point is 00:09:23 It's changed the way you recruit. It changes every the way that you have to have your philosophy. And it's a very important thing. And that's one of the things that drew me to Kentucky was the commitment through the NIL opportunities. Because you have to have it. You know, we have a tremendous, tremendous collective. Club Blue NIL, and I think that that's going to really help us be in the ballpark. You know, you look at the teams who are in the Final Four and especially the ones that are
Starting point is 00:09:53 from the SEC, their collectives are very, very important to that program. And a lot of people are still adjusting to the NIL, but I think it's a necessary adjustment if you want to be competitive, especially in this league and nationally. And that's something that just really has come to the forefront as I have gone recruiting in the portal noun. You know, that is, that is a subject that comes up very, very quickly in the conversation. And sometimes it is like, it's the first thing. Yeah, I'm sure that's true. So I, I'm sorry, go ahead. I mean to catch up. No, well, and I just, I do. I think that, you know, Kentucky, you know, everyone is very passionate about their sport. And these are opportunities for
Starting point is 00:10:35 these young ladies that they really are going to look for. And we need all the support we can get. and we want to be one of the best players in the SEC. We've got to be at the forefront of the NIL collectives because it is very, very important at the moment. And if you don't adjust, I don't know if you're going to be able to be into the game. So, you know, on the one hand, it's hard because of what you've talked about. But on the other hand, it might be easier to transform a roster than it would have been a few years ago because you can go get players.
Starting point is 00:11:06 So how do you best set yourself up to predict? a really competitive roster next year? Yeah, you're so right. When I got the job at Virginia Tech, it was a different world eight years ago. Every transfer that you got, they had to set out a year. And so you basically had to, you know,
Starting point is 00:11:23 take the roster that you had. And so with the transfer portal, it gives freedom to kids on both sides. You know, there's several kids in the portal from UK. And then there's also kids in the portal who are looking for different opportunities. So I think what I've learned in the last couple of years, yes, you have to be diligent, but you have to do your homework,
Starting point is 00:11:43 and you have to go into the portal, and you can't just take somebody by their stats. You have to vet them. You have to see what type of player they are, what they really want out of their next experience, and then you have to go in and decide, not only by their basketball prowess, but, okay, are they going to be a good teammate? Are they going to be willing to sacrifice? Are they going to be willing to celebrate in each other's successes? And that's where we've had success at Virginia Tech.
Starting point is 00:12:08 We went into the portal and we had a couple of transfers that helped us get to the final four. And they were the most humble kids who came in and just wanted to be a part of something. So I think that you can really transform your roster into a winning roster immediately. But it's going to take a lot of help from NIL and it's going to take a lot of hard discussions through the portal. And then you're going to have to get the right type of players to come in. If you can do that, I think that you have a chance to win immediately. but all those things have to come into order. Now, you may, I apologize in a bench, you may not be able to talk about this because
Starting point is 00:12:44 I don't know, to be quite frank with you, what the rules are anymore because of what things are. So if you can't, just say that to me. But is there, do you expect anyone that was with you at Virginia Tech to join you here? You know, I really can't talk about that. Okay, that's obviously, yeah, just an obvious situation that, you know, we'll wait and see, know who's available and who's not. But once I left Virginia Tech, other than the seniors who are exhausted eligibility, I haven't been able to speak with anyone.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Okay. And so, you know, my focus is right now on what we have right now on our roster and trying to continue through the transfer portal. All right. Last question. I'll get you out. I think one of the things that I heard people in Blacksburg, because again, I think one of the biggest testaments to you is how many people in Blacksburg were writing me, who I don't even
Starting point is 00:13:43 know, saying you guys got like a great dude. Everyone continued to say a big thing to you was being a part of the community and like being a part of sort of that you thought that was a key part to the success. I assume you have that same vision here. And how do you see yourself sort of doing that? Well, you have to make yourself available, you know, to to each and every person, you know, whether they like what you do, what you don't, and just be visible. You know, be visible. I want to be a part of the community. It's been a part of the community in Blacksburg for a very long time.
Starting point is 00:14:19 And, you know, you can come up to me and Kroger and talk to me and I'm going to talk back. You know, and I think that's very, very important because once you make yourself personable to the fan base, not only just your players, but also the coaches, they feel a part of the program. And that's something that we've done. I've done it at James Madison when I was there. I did it at Virginia Tech, and I planned to do that again at Kentucky. And I just think that's the way you build a program. You know, you can't run and hide. You want to be out there in the forefront, you know,
Starting point is 00:14:49 and then good times will come, you know, because people will stick with you because they believe in you. And that's the way it happened. You know, it didn't happen overnight, but it happened at Virginia Tech. And it was a tough decision, but it was going to take something, you know, magnificent like Kentucky to pull me away. Well, we here at KSR are here for whatever help we can give you, and I'm looking forward to to coming, getting back out and going to the games. Good luck to you.
Starting point is 00:15:15 I know Keenland's coming. You ever been to a horse race? Are you a horse guy? But you know what? I went up to a horse farm, and, you know, I got to see what life is good. And I wanted no parts of feeding him, but my wife was able to, she loves horses. And so she fed him, fed him of peppermint. I stood off in the back while they took pictures.
Starting point is 00:15:36 So you won't see me in those pictures. But I'm excited, excited for new opportunities and to learn a lot of new things. So if anyone has any suggestions for me, you know, have them come out there and give them to me and I'm looking forward to it. All right. Well, Kenny, thank you very much. Good luck. And congratulations. I know we're looking forward to seeing how you do.
Starting point is 00:15:55 Thank you very much, Matt. I appreciate it. All right. Go ahead. No, Kenny Brooks. Seems like a great guy, doesn't he? Seems like an awesome guy. I was already excited about the future with him before that interview.
Starting point is 00:16:04 just added more to that excitement. I mean, look what website I'm on right now. I am looking at what season tickets cost. Are you getting season tickets? Yeah, I'm putting my deposit. Wow, look at Drew getting season tickets. I'm ready. Let's go. Drew Franklin, season ticket holder. I'm going to ask, I'm only going if those two guys go with me, the two twin brothers. If they go, then I'll go. Hey, Major League Baseball is honest, and that means one thing, spring has sprung. And at Kentucky Sports Radio, we want to tell you all the time to get your body healthy. So you can enjoy the warm weather ahead. Our friends at court physical therapy can help you do that, whether you like to attend ball games or just be outside. Courts physical therapists can help you and your family,
Starting point is 00:16:40 do the things you love. Shake off those winter blues at court.com. That's k-O-R-T.com. I'll tell you the results of the poll on the Louisville coach, and we'll take more of your calls and get ready. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-2-2-80-22-87. A lot of you were writing me saying, did you notice something about what Brooks? said versus conversations the last couple weeks, no comment. But I did love his attitude about being involved and all that. I thought that, I think he's exactly right. Yeah, saying all the right things, looking forward to get started, even invited people to approach him at Kroger. I mean, you don't hear that often, but the man wants to meet friends. Leave him alone at Kroger.
Starting point is 00:17:31 It was about 60-40 yes to have the U of L coach on. I don't know, man. 60-40 is. Is he yes, but it's also when I put on social media, Louisville's coaches on, everybody's going to think that like, you know. We're propping him up a little. We don't want that. I'm not propping him up. I just think like it would be interesting. And like I think he'd be a fun dude to go back and forth with.
Starting point is 00:17:58 But at the same time, if I decide to do it, I'm going to ask to have Cal on again before. I'll ask, I'm going to specifically set, because I did this with Martin Hart, they said he would come on this week. I'm going to specifically ask, and I've done this many times, but I'm going to ask again, will Cal come on the show? If he says no, then should I just not? Like, does that just mean I can't have any coach on? No coaches.
Starting point is 00:18:25 No, but I'm being, this is a good theoretical point. Let's say John Shire wants to come on. Bruce Pearl's been on before. But let's say Bruce Pearl wants to come on, Nate Oates, whatever. Am I beholden to not have them on? on because Cal won't come on? No, you got to book guests the way you want to book guests. If one doesn't want to do it, that shouldn't impact the next one.
Starting point is 00:18:48 I mean, we used to, back when we had more guests, we used to put guests of every team on. Not coaches necessarily, but people. And then we stopped because a lot of the play-by-play guys were kind of boring and it wasn't worth doing. But like, if it was a big personality, you know, I feel like you're, if I had a call, no, well, it's not one. And it's just if I had a call tomorrow that said Nate Oates would like to come on, are we supposed to just say no?
Starting point is 00:19:14 I think you got to take that. He's in the final four. We got a show to put out there. I mean, I interview these people on ESPN. I just, with Pat Kelsey, I wouldn't want him thinking he's over here looking good. No, I'm going to, like, I'm going to argue with it. You think I'm going to let him say, I mean, I'm going to mock. I'm going to be like, dude, come on.
Starting point is 00:19:38 Then we're good. I certainly won't have any nice thing. to say. I don't know if I want to deal with that right now, but it's an interesting question. Who's up next, Rick? Got Ira up next. Ira, go ahead, Ira. Hey, guys, big fans, second time calling, a member of the Big Blue Nation, and now that I'm retired, I hope to get to listen to you more often. Well, thank you, Ira. Congrats on the retirement. Thank you, sir. A couple of quick points, and you've already hit on, stole a little bit of my thunder. If Coach Cal is the Hall of Fame coach as he is claimed to be, and when he came
Starting point is 00:20:12 to Kentucky, he did revitalize the game with the one and done, and he got the kids into the NBA, which is part of his purpose. Now we see if he can change his formula to hit what the landscape of college basketball is now, because I just looked on the web, and of the teams that were in the final eight, if I've got these numbers correct, 18 had transfer portals and 16 were 15, fifth year seniors. That's a different landscape of college. I don't like it. I would rather them be like Dan Isle and play three years and be the highest score in three
Starting point is 00:20:52 years in Kentucky's history, but I can't go back there because I've been a big group fan for a long time. You're exactly right. You can't fight change. So like next week, I'm going to announce a new hire with KSR whose sole focus is going to be on the social side of what we do. Like the reason we're doing it is that's the world now. And if I want to keep up, I got to do it.
Starting point is 00:21:19 Like I can't keep going on. I don't want to do TikTok. Okay, I can't do it. I got to hire somebody to help us with TikTok. That's just the way it is. And, and Ira, that's the way it goes. Like you can't fight change. And I'm with you.
Starting point is 00:21:33 You have to adapt. You have to. Adapt or die. But do you not see the potential problem of even going down the greeting line after the ballgame, seeing one kid who's on the losing team and he scored 40 points? Hey, give me a call. But it doesn't matter. But it doesn't matter because it's the rules.
Starting point is 00:21:56 So, like, in the off season, I'm fine with having the conversation of, is this what we want? But once those are the rules, Ira, like they're the rules. You know what I mean? Like once that's the rule, and it's nice to hear from me, sir, congrats on your time, and I appreciate it. But once you know the rule, it doesn't matter if you agree with it, you have to do it, right? So it's just like I might think, and I appreciate the call, Ira,
Starting point is 00:22:22 I might think that TikTok or Instagram or whatever should be banned. But the moment the government decides to have it, I got to be on it. Your opinion doesn't matter. It doesn't matter anymore. Right. Like once, you know, you may want Bob to be president instead of Luke. But once Luke's president and he sets the rules, you got to make yourself as successful as you can under Luke's president.
Starting point is 00:22:50 And if you go, I ain't doing anything to Bob, you're losing. Right. So these rules exist. And now we got to go win under these rules. And it's changed quite a bit. College basketball has changed many times in the past, and Kentucky found a way on the other side of it to still be Kentucky. That will just happen with this new era. I mean, when they added a three-point line, the game completely changed, and Kentucky still found a way to be Kentucky for decades moving forward.
Starting point is 00:23:14 Now we're in the NIL portal era. Let's make sure Kentucky's on the right side moving forward as this goes into the new stage. I met a woman who's in my leadership development group. I have such respect for her. She lives in Louisiana. She's the one I told you that works on prison stuff, right? She told me that in 2016, she was a huge Hillary Clinton supporter. Then Hillary lost and Trump won.
Starting point is 00:23:40 But her goal is to help women when they get out of prison translate into society and be successful. So Trump becomes president. What some people would do would be just try to beat him. She said, my goal is to help these women in prison. So she called up the Trump administration and said, how can I work with you? And some people did. And then she was part of a group of people that passed this package to help women getting out of prison. I told her how much I respected that.
Starting point is 00:24:07 I was like, you didn't get what you wanted, but you still tried to make what happened work for you. That's what Cal has to do. That's what we have to do. You may not like that there's old dudes in college, but there's old dudes in college. So the question is, how do you win when there's old dudes in college? Yeah, and I even thought last year we were going to be there. and a little young, but it was such a special group we waited for so long to understand. But now moving forward, it's clear that old guys, it's right in front of us.
Starting point is 00:24:36 Old guys are the ones being the most successful right now. Old guys are it. And so you can't fight change. You know what I mean? You can't, the people who fight, go watch that movie Blackberry. You seen that movie? I don't think so. It's about the people who started Blackberry.
Starting point is 00:24:52 And they were like, nobody's going to want iPhone kind of screens. They're going to want our little keys. That keyboard. And everybody was like, I don't know, man. People are starting to like these screens. They're like, no, they're going to want keys. And then all of a sudden, there's no more blackberries. And no keys.
Starting point is 00:25:07 And there are no keys because you can't fight change. You've got to embrace it. We'll take a break. Be right back. We're here at KS. Bar & Grills. Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back, Tughey Sports Radio, here at KS Bar and Grill. We just had one of our patrons here tell me that they liked our new boneless wings better.
Starting point is 00:25:41 I agree with you. I used to say between me and you for the first couple of years that I wasn't a huge fan of our boneless wings. our bone in are amazing but we changed them apparently and in the last three or four months have gotten tons more compliments which is good we had like three things on the menu when we started we didn't like i got two of them pulled off get them out here well i mean you got to have like you want the food to be good and then the boneless wings though you got to have them but i just never thought they was good as they should be but now they've kind of turned a corner and they're good.
Starting point is 00:26:13 And I now feel 100% confidence in our menu, which makes you happy. Very happy. And you know it. I'm still team bone in forever, though. They're so good. The bone ends are too good, though. Like, you do, you go to a restaurant for what they, like,
Starting point is 00:26:28 El Napaul has the best salsa, right? McDonald's has the best Diet Coke. When you find a place that does the something the best, that's what you get. You don't go to McDonald's, and order an orange juice. You don't think anyone's ever done that? They shouldn't.
Starting point is 00:26:48 Have you ever had it? I've had their high sea. Their orange juice is like, I mean, look, for as good as their Diet Coke is, their orange juice is that terrible. If I'm at McDonald's, I'm not there for good treats. You're not, yeah, you're not getting, it's like, who goes to McDonald's and gets a salad?
Starting point is 00:27:04 Only an insane person. You want a salad? Go to vinaigrat, right? Like go get. So again, when you come here, the bone in wings are the thing. The sliders are now, I think, a good second thing. So it's just, I'm giving you advice. We're power-ranging the menu.
Starting point is 00:27:22 Like next door. Like next door, Sumo. You get the habachi chicken. No offense to someone. You don't get the sushi there. You get sushi somewhere else, right? I haven't had their sushi, but I trust it. I'm just saying like every restaurant you figure out the thing.
Starting point is 00:27:38 You play the hits. Yeah, I wouldn't go to the Cajun place and ask for a cheeseburger. You know, I don't go to Jeff Ruby's and ask for chicken tenders like Cal Hunter Dickinson did. That's true. Everybody has a different thing. Are you going to watch Iowa LSU tonight? I am looking forward to it. I mean, that's crazy.
Starting point is 00:27:59 It's not even the Final Four. And this is like a game that I think is going to have a huge audience. I think this game could be higher rated than the championship. I think it might be depending on who the teams are. Because these are the two most high-profile teams, are Iowa and LSU, right? I already saw on social media, the Angel Reese, the ring thing is already floating around from where they had their beef last year. I'm surprised they're doing the early game. So they're at seven.
Starting point is 00:28:25 I don't know who the late game is, but it's not them. USC and Yukon. Yeah, that's also a good one. What do you think about them getting the three point lines wrong? I couldn't believe that. I saw the story. I'm like, well, that stinks. That shouldn't happen.
Starting point is 00:28:39 but then I saw like zoomed out the court and I thought how did no one know no one noticed sooner than they did it's like no one noticed here's what's crazy though did you know did you know in the games the team shot worse at the closer three point line probably messing with their head I agree with you that's what I said I bet you oddly so it was the the one line was correct and the other line was a little too far in because the women's three point line I guess got moved back to the men's line and this one on one side had the old women's line that was a little bit closer. And they did worse, probably because they're used to, right? Am I crazy about that? I was kind of even thinking like, so you know you're going to have the advantage in one half. It's almost like we got to have a pressure to hit our threes in this half because this is the easy line. But it also may have been a disadvantage because your body is used to shooting a certain distance and then you're just not now. Yeah. I don't know how much you're really looking down at where the line is, but it had to mess with them a little bit, knowing that it wasn't the actual line.
Starting point is 00:29:42 The difference was not substantial, but it's just also like, how do you make that mistake if you're the NCAA? Like, how do you screw up in the regional the three point, literally the rules of the game? I mean, if you got to the final four and the basket was 12 feet high, you'd be like, do you all not know the rules? No, only one of the baskets is 12 feet high. The other one is 10 feet tall. Or, you know, you get to the Super Bowl and one half of the field, it's just nine yards for a first step.
Starting point is 00:30:12 Are you following the basketball drama in the men's tournament? You know, our boy, Stephen Peake has complained about this orange basketball for years. They say it's too inflated. And I thought, I've even told him like, Stephen, we got to move on from the basketball. I think you're getting a little crazy. I'm all in with him now. Matt Painters talked about it. There's clips.
Starting point is 00:30:29 Guys can't even dribble. It's bouncing so high. Great point guards are losing it. I understand. And I've heard him say that for you. years, Stephen Peake. And I'm not, so for people who don't know, if they use a different basketball in the NCAA tournament than most teams used.
Starting point is 00:30:43 The bright orange men. All the Nike teams, we use a Nike ball. But when you get to the tournament, they use a Wilson ball, which is the ball that's used by, like, Under Armour teams and Adidas teams. So like Louisville uses that ball, Auburn uses that ball. But most teams that are Nike schools don't. People say it's too inflated. So, like, there are videos of guys dribbling, and it, like, bounces up and hits them in the face.
Starting point is 00:31:08 Like, it's not like a rubber, like, ball, but it's like, bam, hits them in the face. But how do you explain the fact that, like, Jack Gulke makes 10-3s? And they're in Nike school. Like, how do you explain? I get it, but, like, scoring's up in the tournament. Much more so. Eadie had 40. Connect had 37.
Starting point is 00:31:28 I don't, I'm not complaining that it's really changed any results. But once it's in your head and your wife. watching. Good point guards are constantly, they don't always turn it over. They might recover, but they're constantly losing control of the basketball because it's bouncing too high, especially on breakaways. You'll see them. They can't pull their arm back and they recover, but once you're watching and you know it's out there, the ball is heavily inflated. Rick, what do you think? What do you think, Rick? About inflating the basketballs? Yeah. Well, I don't know. It makes sense to me if it's
Starting point is 00:31:59 overinflated and it's just out of control. You just don't use that basketball. There's Rick's. We need to give a set. When Rick gives insight like that, what can we call it? Rick's. My two cents worth. Rick's two cents. Okay.
Starting point is 00:32:14 Rick, I liked your two cents there. Very good. It was common sense. I would vote for Rick as my NCAA president. Rick's two cents. I like that NCAA president. Not bad. I'm like a t-shirt with that on the front.
Starting point is 00:32:27 We'll get you one, Rick. We'll get you an NCAA president. Who's next? I got Rob up next. Rob, go ahead, Rob. You hit the nail on the head about McDonald's orange juice. It's got awful. It's so terrible.
Starting point is 00:32:41 How does a place that does Diet Coke so well have their orange juice? It's like it's squeezed out of someone's armpit. It's so terrible. They're focused on their Diet Coke. It's just awful, but go ahead. I think the most frustrating part of the tournament so far has been Alabama's run just because they were in a similar boat as we were. They're good offensively, and they're all.
Starting point is 00:33:03 awful defensively. You know, we beat them, Auburn beat them, Tennessee beat them, Florida beat them, and they adjusted in the tournament. You know, they played better defense. They clamped down against Carolina. And, you know, we had more talent than that Alabama team. But they adjusted on the fly in the tournament and now they're there. I totally agree with you.
Starting point is 00:33:24 I think about this Alabama team like I thought about Missouri and football season. Like they're having our year, you know, and I appreciate the call. like Missouri had our year in football that's what we were supposed to do and Alabama kind of had our tournament run that was what we were supposed to do and it didn't happen I don't like how we keep pummeling these teams
Starting point is 00:33:44 in the regular season not just this year and at the end of the tournament they're all in it I mean North Carolina and Kansas last year we beat Alabama by 32 points Tennessee's gone but I mean Kentucky whoop them in Knoxville they make it to the elite eight it's like we have these huge regular season wins where we know we can run these teams out of the gym
Starting point is 00:34:02 and then at the end of March, they're the ones in the mix. Kansas, beat them by 20 and they went to the title. Who's next? Got Tom up next. Tom, go ahead, Tom. Hey, hey, love your show. I just, you don't like to make a point. I've seen on social media a lot.
Starting point is 00:34:18 Fans won all these players we have to come back. They, we have six freshmen coming in. They want to go to the portal to get more physical. The math doesn't work. You can't get everybody back, bring in six freshmen, and go to the portal. I agree with you. So what would you suggest we do?
Starting point is 00:34:37 Well, you know, I think that all the fans, after hearing Cal and Mitch, are thinking that Cal can fix it in a year, and it's not a short-term solution. It's not going to happen next year based on where we're already at, unless, you know, the kids don't come back. We don't get all the freshmen. we don't go to the portal. You know, our toughest guy, physicality was probably Sierra, and he's already maybe gone.
Starting point is 00:35:11 Now, there is a math problem. That's a very good point. There is a math problem. I appreciate the call. We got six dudes coming in. How many more guys can you have? You know what I mean? I mean, there is definitely a math problem when it comes, which is in the future,
Starting point is 00:35:26 you probably can't bring in six dudes. But they already have six. cow's going to look at five top 25 recruits and tell him don't come. And I don't think he's going to look at Mr. basketball in Kentucky and tell him not to come. So what are you going to do? Because he's right. There is a math problem.
Starting point is 00:35:41 That's my Kentucky-Brandic call today. It's true. Two quick things. First of all, man named Robert Lindsay, he was a DJ here in Lexington for a number of years on another station. He was the guy who stayed on the billboard until Petino came. Okay. Do you remember that story?
Starting point is 00:35:57 Ryan's talked about. He has some health issues and we want. want to give our prayers to him and his family. Hang in there, Robert. He's a listener of this show. Secondly, as many of you know, Shannon the dude's grandmother has passed away. He called her nanny. 98 years old was about to be 99.
Starting point is 00:36:19 She passed away over the weekend. I mean, Shannon can talk a lot more about her when he comes back on the show, but he's having a lot of difficulties. They were very, very close. I mean, if you listen to the show, you know that. But they were probably even closer than he articulated. He spent most of his childhood there as he was growing up. And, you know, we always give Shannon a hard time about being sort of an odd dude and can be prickly sort.
Starting point is 00:36:51 But there's almost nothing to me that was ever sweeter than watching him with that woman. He would go see her. every day. And when I say every day, I mean every day. He would go see his 98-year-old grandmother in her nursing home every day. When we would go on the road,
Starting point is 00:37:13 he would check in with her every day. He would take time to call, see how she was doing. Just the way he talked to her was so sweet and beautiful. And I told him that this weekend. Their relationship to me was absolutely beautiful. He cared about her so much.
Starting point is 00:37:31 So he is hurting now, and I hope all of you will keep he and his family in your prayers. The funeral is Wednesday. We're going to all do the show in Louisville and then go. But Drew, I feel bad for Shannon. She lived a full life, but also we can hopefully, in her passing, you know, think about, like, everybody should treat their elders and their relatives. and their relatives the way he did her. Yeah, to go see her every single day did not miss it. I mean, that was number one priority each day
Starting point is 00:38:08 was that he went and saw his nanny. As you said, he's going through a lot right now. We're thinking of him, but that relationship is like the sweetest thing ever. That's a sweet. That should be an inspiration to everyone. If you're lucky enough to still have your grandparents, go see him today.
Starting point is 00:38:21 And I'm glad Shannon got almost 100 years with her, but we're thinking to him and hope he can heal enough. focus all the good memories once he gets past this hurting. We'll take a break. It'll be right back. This is KSR. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:38:41 859-280-2287. Reminder, we're going to, we have trivia Wednesday. Also, Saturday, going to have a lot of stuff going on here with the final four, WrestleMania, UK baseball. But let's talk about UK baseball before I go to the phone. UK baseball sweeps old miss. They're now 8 and 1 in the SEC. They're going to be ranked in the top 20.
Starting point is 00:39:04 today. They are tied for first place in the SEC. They have a huge home game tomorrow against Louisville if it doesn't rain. And then they have a huge series against Alabama at home. Like things are rolling for the backcats. They're off to such a good start of won their first three series in the league. Then this weekend they go to Old Miss, a place that gets a rowdy atmosphere. They put passion behind baseball. And they scored 17. Kentucky scored 17 on Saturday. And then 15 on Sunday. 17 Saturday, 15 on Sunday to sweep them. I mean, they're on fire right now.
Starting point is 00:39:38 The schedule will get much harder, but the fact that they're as good as they are at this point, the season is great. Schedule gets harder, but they did still get a break. I mean, they play Auburn still, who is the second worst team in the league next to Missouri. They're going to be in like three or four weeks hosting Arkansas who might be the best team in the country.
Starting point is 00:39:56 If Kentucky keeps winning, that could be like one of those Kentucky baseball, kind of series, you know? Yeah, and I mean, I hate the circumstances that were sad in the other sport, but I think this is a big opportunity for fans to get on board. I mean, with them finally getting a postseason game last year at Kentucky Proud Park, I think that just added more excitement, and now you've got fans looking for something to latch on to, so this is a good turning.
Starting point is 00:40:19 Big opportunity. Big opportunity for them moving. Nick Mingeon will be on the show tomorrow to talk a little bit more about. But they are, I mean, they have the, I want to say the most wins in the SES. I think I'm right about that overall. Who's next? Justin is up next. Justin, go ahead, Justin.
Starting point is 00:40:39 Hey, first of all, I just want to, I don't get a chance to listen live every day. I'm usually listening to the podcast. But one of y'all heard it feels like, you know, I'm hurting too when you listen every day. So I just want to send my prayers up to Shannon. Thank you. I will pass that along. And my point is, you know, we're all trying to figure out. what the, I don't know, like the secret sauce is to college basketball now, and I think a lot of it's got to do this.
Starting point is 00:41:07 Cal really don't recruit for his system. Like, he just recruits the best players and then hopefully they can fit in. Like, you know, Yukon don't have all the best players, but Hurley runs a system, and he recruits players from the portal to fit a particular playstyle. And I think that's why they're, you know, succeeding right now. Well, I think you're right. I mean, I think you do have to pick the guys to your system. appreciate the call. And then you got to coach them. I mean, at the end of the day, a lot of our problems have been end of game situations, right? I mean, that's been a problem for us for a while. We kind of have taken this view of, well, our guy's going to beat your guy off the dribble, and that's how we're going to get stuff done. And maybe now you've got to do other things.
Starting point is 00:41:49 I mean, I think there's a lot to all this that, like, you got to, we just got to stay forward thinking. I think, you know, I think we've hit a seismic shift in college basketball. basketball, and now we've got to be ready for it. Now we've got to adapt, and we'll see if we're able to do it. Who's next? Brady is up next. Brady, go ahead, Brady. Hey, I just want to say prayers out to Shannon and his family.
Starting point is 00:42:18 Thank you. I really hope that you all could get the Louisville coach on, because that would be, that could be a best of show that you all could run for years if you and have to start going back for. No, I like, I like it. Don't act. People should know if we have him on. I ain't just letting him just give a bunch of PR talk.
Starting point is 00:42:38 Like, I'm going to be, you know how I am. I can't do that. But go ahead. And to the winner of the KSR bracket challenge, I strongly suggest that you should finish the KSR food bracket that was never finished by the crew. Well, let me just say the KSR bracket challenge. I appreciate the call. It's going to come down.
Starting point is 00:42:59 There are four different people who can win. Whoever gets the first. the national change because somebody has NC State. There's a guy that has NC State. And if he gets it, if he gets NC State, he will win. There is a person that has NC State. Wow, that person deserves to win.
Starting point is 00:43:13 If they saw that to come in, others are favorites. So unfortunately, had Duke won, there was a Duke fan that was going to win. Thankfully, we lost. But there was a guy whose name was Leitner 32, who was on the list. Who's next? Bob is up next.
Starting point is 00:43:29 Bob, go ahead, Bob. What do you say, Matt? Have you read Matt Rex Chapman's book yet? No, I have not. I feel really interesting. And is it any consolation to the UK fans after we beat them? The Alabama is advancing in the tournament. No.
Starting point is 00:43:46 So we feel good about that. No, of course. I appreciate the call. No. No. If we were a better team, we'd still be in it. We beat them at home. That's a great win.
Starting point is 00:43:56 We looked amazing, but we also lost Oakland. So I have no consolation. to you? We don't want to be the program saying, oh, well, at least we won this one regular season game. You don't want to do that team. I'll miss those guys, but it has an old school field. I miss them too, but it's just like me and you just hanging out. I'm going to be Frank on Thursday, apparently. Yes, on Thursday.
Starting point is 00:44:46 Be Frank with Franklin. Nick Mingeione will be tomorrow. Hopefully Mitch Barnhart on Wednesday. A lot going on this week. Thank you all very much for listening. You have a great Monday, and we will see you tomorrow here at KSBars, Kentucky Sports Radio. podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.
