April the 10th.
I'm Matt Jones here at the KS Bar and Grill on Wings Day, Dollar Wings,
which is the most exciting news of the day without question.
All day and night.
Trivia this evening.
and you can give us a shout on the Clark's Pump and Shop phone line when we open it up,
859-280-2287. A Vision Auto Glass Text Machine is 772-724 in this edition, sponsored by the T.J. Smith
law office called T.J. He'll make them pay. It is me, Ryan, and Drew. Drew is back.
But before we start that, we have some breaking news, Rick, right off the top. Do you have it?
Yeah. Right off the top. University of Arkansas has announced John Caliperi is their
coach just happened about two minutes ago. He is officially the new coach in Arkansas,
and the press conference is likely to be this afternoon. So not, we knew it was coming, but now
it is official. It's been a big 24 hours since this show happened yesterday. We did a special
edition from 3 to 5 p.m. yesterday with the announcement that Cal was leaving. You can listen
to that on podcast. I highly recommend it. We'll talk more about it later. But
I talked a lot during those two hours, so let's do this.
You guys have not talked since it became official.
I mean, we knew it was happening, but still different when you see the video saying goodbye.
I'll start with you, Ryan.
What's your thoughts on the Caliperie era ending officially?
You know, when we sat here in this booth yesterday, you could feel it.
It was about to happen.
I told you said I can feel it in my gut.
Something, it's going to be a crazy afternoon.
And then we see Cal's video.
And it made me sad.
I mean, he looked genuinely sad.
He did.
I think that really had a big effect on a lot of us.
But then Ellen's video made me even more sad.
She's the one that really hit me was her video.
And so if you're asking me my next real reaction of him leaving, I'm sad.
I mean, I'll be excited when the new coach gets here.
I'll be on board 100%.
But for today, for this moment, it's tough to see him go.
Drew, you picked a great two days to take a vacation.
I can't leave you all alone for 48 hours.
So, you know, when you were here, Cal is still coming back.
So what's your take on the last 72 hours?
For one, you know when you get back from vacation and you have that, like, work anxiety?
Like, you're getting back?
I have that times a million.
I would think so, yeah.
Because so everyone knows, I went to a place that doesn't allow phones.
So as you all are getting every hour, Monday night at about midnight, I didn't even know about the stroller.
And, like, you didn't know about the stroller?
When I say I didn't know anything Monday, I did not know anything Monday.
Nothing absolutely zero.
At about 7.30 a.m.
I called my dad and my wife, said I'm out all day because I went to the message.
You cannot take your phone in.
You don't have an option.
So, I mean, I've been taking all this completely different experience than you all.
I'm reading.
Some stuff has already happened and I'm getting it all at once as I get back.
But it's been a surreal, surreal time for me taking it all in.
But now that it's happened, I'm kind of in the, like Ryan said, it's sad.
I thought Cal's video was very good, by the way.
When that first popped up and I was going to hit play,
I'm thinking there's a lot of directions he can go with this.
And I thought he did a really good job expressing how he did.
But also, like Ryan said, even though the Cal thing got me,
lots of friends posting stuff, you know we have friends that are very close to him.
I'm thinking about them now.
I know they're sad.
But the Ellen video got me.
Who knew the Ellen Caliperi Instagram shout out would be the one they got me.
but I think both of them did a good job in expressing how much this place means to them,
and it felt like they're hurting and leaving.
You know, so it gets announced at like 2 o'clock Cal's video comes out.
We decide to do that special show from 3 to 5.
So my work mode goes completely into focusing on that.
And so we do that, and I'm completely focused, like I said, you can listen to that.
If you hear that at the end of the show, out of nowhere, spontaneously, I just decide to list the best.
Calipari moments.
And it's about six minutes.
And I verbally went through all the best moments.
Mario's put it to video, but there's a lot of copies of it out there.
First of all, I couldn't believe I could remember all those the way I did back to back
to back to back.
It was great.
You really killed it.
It was really good.
I heard that on my way home.
That was really good.
The whole show, but the memories was awesome.
So I went through all those memories.
Then I got in the car.
And I got to tell you, the people at El Nepal in Louisville, I apologize.
if you saw me in the booth, the waiter came up to me and said,
I saw you on TV yesterday.
And I said, yeah.
And then I got on my phone and I saw Haley Minogue, who used to be a KSR college writer.
She posted pictures of when she was our intern, which was the beginning of the Cal era.
And I saw that picture of the three of us with Cal.
Yeah.
And that was probably 2012, 2011.
and I saw that picture and I looked at it.
And first of all, it's such a KSR picture.
Like, I'm talking to Cal distinctly focused.
Drew is in the back throwing up the three goggles.
Photo bombing, looking like he's 20 years old.
And you were thick, and you're wandering around on your phone.
And it's like, that's the perfect KSR picture.
And that got me started on about 30 minutes of it's like all these memories started coming through my head.
And I told my mom who called me after I was done eating, it wasn't so much.
I mean, look, the cow, well, I'll miss cow.
Cow was great here.
I do think it was time for that era to end.
But it's more like what that represented.
You know, I'm 45 years old.
He was here for 15 years.
That's a third of my life, right?
I mean, that's a third of my life.
It's half your life, right?
Like, I mean, it's the part of my life that completely changed the rest of it.
So then I'm sitting there, and this is what.
what I do, and I admit, I start to get choked up because what I then do is replay all the stuff
we did as part of it. Like, I'm sitting there replaying all those moments, going to, I mean,
I could literally do the same six minutes but about us, but like going to New York with you to see
John Wall play against Yukon and you get punched in the face by a Yukon fan. I'm hoping we get them
back for that. I might get the last laugh, hopefully. You know,
Going to Syracuse and watching them lose and standing in that locker room and watching all those guys cry.
And then in Newark, when the Sclar brothers Bradley and I walk to Newark to watch Kentucky win those games to go to the Final Four,
2012 in New Orleans, celebrating with Josh Hopkins and Rex Chapman and standing on the floor.
And then, you know, all these moments over the years and all the things that have happened in our lives during those years.
You know, think about all that.
Like, I got reflective like that, and I got emotional.
I really did.
It was like, I said to my mom, it's just the end of an era.
It doesn't mean it shouldn't have ended, but it's the end of an era in the Kentucky basketball world,
but for those of us that do this also in our lives.
I totally agree with you.
I was listening to a lot of your show when I was in my office, and there's the picture,
just like you've got, you and Cal Perry Camp.
I got a picture of Cal and me.
Well, what about that picture?
Like that picture right there.
Yeah.
Of me, Cal and Matthew Mitchell.
That was in Mark Stoop's basement.
Okay.
And look how happy and young, the three of us look in that picture.
And that was in Mark Stubbs' basement right after he got hired.
Uh-huh.
Well, think about that now.
Yeah.
I mean, think about all the myriad of relationships that are different now since then.
That picture, just look at these pictures behind us.
That picture of me and Drew with Scott Van Pelt talking about how we'd gotten
sued because we took up for UK against, you know, John Higgins.
Look at that picture at Camp Out.
Yeah, I took that one.
Yeah.
Talking to, to the fans at Camp Out.
Look at that crowd.
A huge crowd.
I mean, that crowd is unbelievable.
Your shirt off with Earn Not Given on your chest with Brad Calapary.
I'm not as proud of that one.
This is the 2010 Big Blue Madness.
I'm interviewing Drake and I don't even know who he is.
I honestly don't even know who I'm talking.
too right there. It's just all of those things
they just flood your mind.
They do. They really do. They'll be great memories
in the next 15 years
but there is a sense, Drew, where it's
like, wow,
it really is over. Yeah, and I've
already written this on our website a week or two
ago, but for me,
I started KSR in 2009
and for 15 years I've told
the horrible joke that they got
Cal, he signed Wall and cousins, and then
I joined KSR. We were like a four-pack.
I always talk about a magic scenario.
Imagine the scenario we all put our hats together.
I've told that horrible joke for 15 years, but realistically, that's what happened.
Not that we did it together, but that timeline adds up.
I started KSR in the middle of Cal landing and Wall and Cousins getting here.
And that's all, at least professionally with this show, I've only known Cala Pairier.
I've been a fan forever, but at least professionally with KSR, like starting this coaching search,
this is wild to me because the day, you know, the month I started was the same time Cal was building his first recruiting class.
And there was also a part of me that'll be honest with you.
Next year will be the 20th year that I've been doing KSR, the website.
It'll be 20 years next year.
Mario's starting Monday.
No, I mean this.
And then me seeing that picture of you, it was like 10 or 11 years ago that you were him, right?
12 years ago, you were him.
And now he starts that day.
And 10 years before that, I was you.
And 10 years before that, you were me.
Or maybe 20 years before you.
But I mean, all of that is like, I don't know, it just felt, not to get all sappy, but it just, and then you throw in watching Ellen be sad and watching Cal, I mean, cow looks so sad.
It was, it's just a lot.
Now, with that said, this is what I want to do.
I want to spend one segment, the next one, talking about how I, after talking to a lot of people think Monday went down, how the thing.
how the thing ended because I do think it's interesting and I think it's worth understanding.
But then we got to talk about what's next.
Yes, right.
Right?
Because now we're wishing the best, but that's over.
So now what's next?
And I think there's three people that are the choices.
We'll talk about how it works.
But let me just ask you this question.
If the next coach is either Danny Hurley, Billy Donovan, or Scott Drew, which those,
U.K.
would certainly want it to not get past those three.
Let's say that they all three are one.
Are there any that would make you disappointed?
Nope.
I'm happy with any of those three.
I'm having a parade down Main Street, any of those three guys.
I'm on board immediately if it's any of those three guys.
Same here.
I mean, I might prefer Hurley over the other two.
You know, I could stack them, but at that tier,
they would all get an A if one of them became the higher.
How about you?
Yes.
be
not only fine,
be very optimistic about the future.
I mean, for me,
Hurley's number one just because
if you have a chance to hire
the best coaching college basketball
and you can, you go and do it, right?
But I think my list
might be the exact list that it is.
This is how I think it's situated right now.
Kentucky is going after Danny Hurley.
I think a lot of that's happening today.
Okay, now that doesn't mean we'll find out the answer today,
but I think like today's the day, the Danny Hurley day.
I think if it doesn't happen, I'm not saying it would get announced today,
but I think if they don't get a yes today or if they get a no to,
then I think Thursday's kind of the Scott Drew Day, right?
I think he's the second.
If they don't get either of those guys, if they get nose from both those guys,
then I think they wait until next week and see what happens with Billy Donovan
and see what, because he can't do anything until the play-in game on the 17th.
Billy Donovan might actually be second in the order if they didn't have to wait.
But they do have to wait, and you got to remember there's portal issues, and then what if he wins?
You got to wait longer.
Like, what if he wins, you could end up having to wait even longer.
But I think these next two days are, in my opinion, Danny Hurley and Scott Drew Days.
I think they're going to also start talking to who their second-tier candidates are.
but I get a sense that like
there's a one tier and a two tier
and those three guys are on the one tier
I think there were a couple other people on that one tier
I think they reached for the stars
and just got knocked down by some people
but you're glad they did sure right
like you're glad you made the phone call to Jay Wright
you know what I mean you're glad you made the phone call
to Brad Stevens but those are the three
I think all three of those people
have not told UK no as of
seven o'clock last night
um i think the reports that scott drew was offered last night are not correct but it might
could be correct this morning i don't know but like they're going i think they're going to make hurley
tell him no first and then i think that it will go to the drew donovan but you get to answer your
question get any of those three i'm good with it yeah and i thought billy donovan's comments
yesterday were a little interesting. He said he hadn't been contacted by the UK, but he never said
he wasn't interested. Yeah. And go watch his, go watch him talking about Kentucky and college basketball
last night. Yeah. If you haven't seen that video yet, go watch Billy after the game talking.
That ain't a guy who ain't going to at least think about it. I'm not saying he'll do it, but you go
watch that video. That's not a guy that won't think about it. And Danny Hurley, yeah, there's that
report from Zagoria, who's a Yukon guy that he won't do it. But Danny Hurley has not said, I won't
that job. He is not, and he was on the
McAfee show, and I actually think this didn't get
a lot of attention, where he
basically said, my agent has
certainly told me not to answer.
I mean, he said that.
So, you know,
we'll see. Read the tea leaves. I'm going to see.
I'm not saying he'll do it. If you made
me bet, I think one of you guys I saw said
who's going to be the next coach. My money would be
on Scott Drew. But I think
Hurley's going to have to tell him no first.
And we'll see if that happens.
All right, I want to talk about the end of the
out what happened on Monday.
Because I do think just for closure, it is interesting how that played out.
And there was some misinformation.
There's a lot of chatter.
Let's talk about that when we return.
It's Kentucky Sports Radio.
Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio.
859-280-2287.
One person writes, Matt, what are each of your three favorite CalPerry stories?
Drew, you go first?
Like personal, basketball?
Personal, yeah, personal.
I really enjoyed when I wore a tuxedo to Big Blue.
madness and I didn't really have a relationship with Calipari and he walked in right there in front
of all the cameras on the blue carpet and just stopped and looked at me and said why are you
wearing a tuxedo and I looked at him and I said why aren't you wearing a tuxedo and that was our
interaction but a little fun little quips like that along the way those open practices at the
NCAA tournament almost every year he'd come over and say something to us just just when we had
the better connection there and things are rolling so many fun behind the scene stories
I'll go reverse order number three is when they won the national championship in 2012
and Eloy Vargas and those guys messed up his hair.
And he's standing up there on the podium holding the trophy with just like,
whacked out hair.
Number two, I'm going to say the West Liberty Tornado fundraiser.
That's a good one.
He flew in on a helicopter, flew around, saw the damage, came down,
joined us on our show that Rose, God rest her soul, helped put together.
I knew then that this dude's heart's in the right place because that was early on his tenure.
But my favorite cow memory will and always forever will be,
he argued to the death that the home run I hit off you was fair.
and not foul. It was fair. It was my coach. He was arguing on my behalf. It was fair. With his,
what he's done for Kentucky, I want to add is because it was my part of the state, what he did for
Dawson Springs in that area, especially, especially with the Dawson Springs basketball team.
That is not a big high school, not a lot of basketball success there, and he kind of took them
under his wing a little bit, brought him up here for practice. The coach was texting him,
and there are so many stories like that that we probably don't know and we'll never know.
So I want to add what he did for Western Kentucky, too.
Number three, when he went on his little book tour, and we ended up going to Middlesbril.
And being able to go to Cal with Cal to my hometown and have him there and sit with him and introduce him and stuff.
That was really neat.
Number two, in the Bahamas, I guess now that they're gone, we can say the famous stripper story.
That's never been discussed on this show.
We can say it, right?
You can say it now.
So there was
Why not?
You know what?
It's a funny memory.
So there were two pools at the
at the Atlantis.
One was like the regular pool
And one of them was like where it was like VIP,
which is where the team was staying.
You had to be 18 just to be in there.
They go and they film a video.
Remember that was when people were doing the ice bucket challenge
for ALS or something like that?
the team goes and films the, uh, is going to film the ice bucket challenge out on the beach.
Well, while they're gone, this dude at the pool just turns on this rap music and these women
get in the center of the pool. There's a big pool and there's like a platform in the center and they
start going, uh, like insane, like to the point that even I'm like averting my eyes. Let's just
like it's wild. And then all of a sudden, the team walks back and this is happening.
Cala Perry ran away as fast as any human being had ever run away.
And the players on the team, that was when you get a sense of like 18-year-olds.
The players were just like, they were like children just looking there like,
oh, my goodness.
And then all of a sudden the assistant coaches are trying to scramble and get them out.
Just watching all of that take place was hilarious.
But then number one, and he'll never admit this right now.
I was on a plane with him once.
Oh, yeah.
And I, it's the only time of my life.
I thought it was going to crash.
And like, I was probably being unreasonable, but I did.
It was just me, him, Joe and Kelly Kraft,
and we're flying home from the All-Star game.
And we took off and, you know, maybe that's normal,
but, like, I'm not in planes like that very often.
And I got, I was panicked.
And then I looked at Kelly and she was a little panicked.
And I looked at Cal and he'll never admit it.
Well, I got really scared when I looked at him because I knew he flew all the time and he looked panicked.
All of us were like, I remember thinking if this plane goes down, I'm going to be at the bottom of the story.
And Matt Jones was also there.
Like, I'm going to be the lead.
I'm going to be the bottom of the story.
And then Joe was stoic and just kept.
saying we'll be fine didn't move and for some reason that actually calmed me down and we got through
it and later i would give him a hard time and be like you sure did look scared and he got ah no well he
looked scared he was as panicked as anybody on it so that was that's probably be honestly ryan the
memory i remember the most yeah i forgot about that story and remember i picked you up and i knew how
you were white we had to land in knoxville yeah we couldn't land in lexington we had to land in knoxville and then
you came and picked me up.
Yeah.
All right.
I got one more.
Go ahead.
Well, I thought you'd say when you were on that bus with him when they took the trophy around.
That was awesome when we went all around the state.
And, yeah, that's a really good one, too.
All right.
So I want to talk about what happened on Monday.
I think it is fair to say that Cal, I don't know if I use the word cold feet, but he had second thoughts.
Okay.
I think that's fair to say.
He had second thoughts.
I think it's fair to say that they met.
He met with some U.K. officials at his house.
Dick Gabriel said that he asked for a counteroffer.
He has now walked that back and said that that didn't.
It wasn't a counteroffer.
I wasn't there, so I can't say.
But if Dick walked it back, I'm going to assume that wasn't true.
But I do think there was a meeting of,
is there a way to sort of bring this back together?
And it sounds like the U.K. people said,
No. What do you make of that?
Yeah, I don't know who the UK people were, but they definitely went to his house on Monday,
and they had some sort of discussion, whether there was some renegotiations there.
If they said no, are you good with that?
I think after what happened Sunday night on Monday afternoon, it's broken.
You can't fix it.
I agree. Do you?
Yeah, well, I already thought it was broken.
You certainly can't do that.
I'm married to Mitch interview, rally the fan base, and then go have conversations
that you either...
Not just conversations.
It's reported he's the coach.
Yeah, well, I'm saying just in the beginning of this, that alone,
before they're meeting at his house.
Like, you can't look at us and have that meeting with Mitch
and then go have conversations with anyone.
Yeah.
So I think, you know, that might be part of why he looks sad yesterday.
I think he thought maybe he could salvage it,
and it just didn't happen.
And so now we go to the other area.
All right, Hurley, Donovan, Drew.
The time frame, there's now a couple of reports online.
that both Hurley and Drew have been asked, hey, we'd love to hear something by tomorrow.
So could have a coach tonight, could have a coach tomorrow.
If we don't have it tomorrow, it'll either be Billy Donovan or some name we haven't even mentioned.
We'll talk about actually what a couple of those names could be right after this, KSR.
All right, welcome back Kentucky Sports Radio.
Two quick things.
First of all, you see this box right here.
That's a huge box.
Huge.
You could barely carry it over here.
This box is, what would you say?
What by what?
three by four three by four three feet by four feet maybe i don't know that may be made up but it's a huge
box guess what guess what it is you've not told us i don't know i haven't opened it but guess where it's
from you're gonna think i'm making this up guess where this box is from you're the way you're
saying it must be from the university of arkansas tyson foods no it's not is it from tyson foods
is sent me a box of something oh no well you got to open it you know i got to open it right here right
Like I have to open it.
It's just like a mafia move?
We're going to get a dead chicken here.
It says it's perishable items.
They set you some chicken.
I hope it's dino nuggets.
Let's see.
This says Matt Ryan, Billy.
They leave Drew out.
Drew doesn't even get to be part of the Tyson food.
It says, hey, Matt Ryan, Billy, we listened to your show and loved hearing you take your take
on Coach Cal's move to Arkansas.
We're excited to have coach make his move to Hog Country and create some energy here.
and continue to help the program.
Even if our headquarters is in Arkansas, we love Kentucky food.
So Tyson Foods is manufacturing, blah, blah, blah.
So we sent you some delicious dino nuggets from Tyson.
Yeah.
Speak that into existence.
Guess what I'm having for dinner.
Well, I thought you were going to be angry.
You said on Monday you weren't going to eat any food from...
I didn't say that.
Young Billy said that.
Ryan's not turning down dino nuggets.
I'm not turning out dino nuggets.
Okay.
Hang on just a second.
Are we getting trolled by Arkansas?
Let's ship it back.
Return to Cinder.
Write it on there.
Look, you got, yeah, there's bags of dino nugget.
Oh, my goodness.
Look, along with, yeah.
Little goodie bags.
All they got shirts in there.
Shirts?
Oh, no, I'm not wearing your Arkansas shirt.
I'm sorry about that.
My goodness.
Say, Matt.
That's too funny.
So there you go.
Tyson Foods.
Oh, my goodness.
Are we getting trolled?
That's a boss mood.
I don't like this.
What are we sending back?
That's a good question.
We've got to figure out what we send back.
So there you go.
That just came.
Secondly, the Lexington, the flight tracker season is here.
It is.
There is a flight that was tracked, and it's out there.
Because, again, you can look this stuff up.
There's a flight that was tracked leaving Bluegrass Airport this morning, going to Waco,
landing, and coming right back.
It's pretty specific.
I'll admit, I completely ignore all this flight stuff this time of year because Keenland is full of private jets.
New Jersey, even the Chicago, when I rolled my eyes.
Waco's pretty specific.
Yep.
I don't know if there's a lot of horse owners.
And also when you go and immediately come back.
Yeah.
Like that's a pretty specific thing.
So, you know, Shannon the dude tweeted out this morning that Scott Drew was fly.
Is that what he said?
He said there was a flight.
He just, he didn't get real specific.
but he said, yeah, the flight was coming from Lexington to Waco and back.
I thought he was trolling.
No.
But did Shannon, the dude from vacation, have scoop?
He's got a very reliable source out there that told him this was going on.
He even told him who's allegedly going to be on the plane.
Well, we'll leave it at that.
Okay.
But there is specifically a flight from Lexington and Waco back.
So if you were going to, if you were doing the odds in Vegas, I think the Scott Drew odds just went.
Just went up, didn't they?
The only other plane would be chipping Joanna Gaines leaving away, though.
I don't know what they're doing.
All right, so let's do pros and cons.
We did this yesterday.
Let's do it again.
Let's do pros and cons.
Danny Hurley, the pro is best coach in the country.
Do you see any cons?
I think his only con, and this is not me, but I think his only con would be some,
some fans may not like some of his antics.
But do you think they care if you're winning?
Don't care at all.
Okay, what about you?
My con is I think he might actually be a crazy person.
We might embrace that.
I mean, would it shock you if he just bit the head off a Cardinal before the Louisville game and spit it out?
No, but we would love it.
That's what I mean.
I'm saying it might not be a bad thing.
I'm just saying my man's unpredictable and that could be a con.
Yeah, I think he's one of those dudes that would burn fast and hard,
meaning like after seven or eight years he'd have a lot of people that were like,
but like if we won, it doesn't matter.
It won't matter.
Like he's, I don't know how many of you have ever known.
anyone from New Jersey or Yukon that's of a certain attitude.
I'm not saying everybody, but like, that's what they, they're him.
Yeah, I've been punched by one of them.
They're him.
Like, they're in your face, and you, and like, if you love them, you love them.
And if you don't, you don't.
But the thing is, if he's winning, we'll love him.
And he's going to win, he won there.
I mean, so, like, why wouldn't he win here?
We would all embrace him, and all of our opponents would absolutely despise.
And can you imagine, first of all, it doesn't seem like he and Danny,
he and Cal like each other anyway.
So, because, you know, they've had, they've had, Danny's made some comments that made
them seem like kind of shots at Cal.
Can you imagine if it was that game of those two guys in here?
And Danny doesn't, he's not afraid to poke.
He'll poke anyone.
So that, that rivalry, rivalry would get very interesting in the SEC.
All right, Billy Donovan, pro dude can coach at every level he's coached and won.
Every level, like, even in the pros with not great rosters, he's done.
well. He killed it at Florida
at a school that doesn't even care.
Only potential con for me is you don't know
about recruiting because he hadn't done it in 10 years
and it's a different world now.
But once he has the players,
they're going to be good. What do you think?
Yeah, I think that's it. The con is he's just been out of the
college game, but yet, like you said earlier,
you heard what he said about his
fondness for the college basketball world.
So my con for him
is not very big in that. I think even though he's been
out of college basketball for several years, he will pick it
up quickly once he gets returns.
Yeah, my con is just, the game has changed so much at the college level since he was at Florida that maybe he, you know, isn't as good at NIL as some other guys would be, but that's a complete unknown until he jumps in and does it.
So I would just say the mystery of not knowing how he'll handle the current landscape of the game.
Scott Drew, I mean, I think he's probably now the favorite, but I'm just going to, I'm going to make the case for and against Scott Drew.
The case for Scott Drew, remember, Baylor was one of the three or four worst jobs in the country in Power Five.
We don't consider it that now, but when he became coaching 2005, they'd made one tournament ever, ever.
It'd be like take it.
It was worse than Vandy.
It was a worse job than Mandy.
And within 18 or within 16 years, they win a national championship.
He has made the tournament 10 straight years.
The COVID tournament, they were probably the best team.
We always talk about we could have won, but they probably would have won.
And then the next year, they were the number one overall seed in the tournament.
They just got upset by Carolina in the second round.
The con is he does have a lot of first weekend losses.
So if you want to focus on that, you can.
But my argument is it's Baylor.
He recruits top five to top ten classes at Baylor.
Imagine what he'll do here, right?
He's a little boring.
But there are people who would say, after the last few years,
maybe we need a little boring in terms of, in terms of, you know,
know, press conferences, et cetera.
What about you?
Yeah, hell of a coach.
And we can remember that this Edgecombe kid, his final choices were Baylor in UK.
He picked Baylor.
By the way, there's a really good chance if he came.
The best player in the country is coming with it.
Yes.
Like, BJ Edgecombe, in my opinion, if he's not the best player, he's top three, he would be coming to.
He has three five-star commitments next year.
So while we're going to lose all these guys we had, you bring Scott Drew, you get a different set of
really good guys.
Hell of a coach, hell of a recruiter.
Like you said, there's not a lot of swagger there.
He's kind of vanilla a little bit.
There's no swag.
I was trying to give him a little bit of it out.
No, I mean, like, I'm just being real.
There's no swag.
If we're going to Drake's, it's for Happy Hour because it's off the sandwiches.
If he's going to Drake's, it's for Sunday morning prayer group.
Okay, like he's not going to be party.
And I think that's a fair to say.
That might be a good thing.
I don't disagree.
I don't have any of the basketball concerns that some people have with Scott Drew.
because I just think it's amazing he did what he did at Baylor,
as you said, getting these players to go to Waco, Texas,
where there was no tradition or history or really any basketball before him.
If anything, it was just scandals before him.
So if you give him Lexington, Kentucky,
and all the resources he'll have,
especially I think there will be a lot of NIL support, whoever it is,
then I think he'd be a good higher.
My concern is, like you all said,
just he's not going to light the fan base on fire,
coming here and rip a shirt off and, you know,
be out in front of everyone.
Yeah.
All right.
So those are tier one.
So then if that doesn't happen, you go to tier two.
I've been told they're sort of kind of floating tier two people right now and talking to folks.
I assume there will be names added to this.
These are the only three names that I know have been considered as tier two.
Chris Beard, Shaka Smart, Sean Miller.
I'm sure there are other people.
Those are the only three I know.
so I don't want to add names that I do not know.
What about those three?
I think that's a step down from the first two,
but if I told you the coach had to be one of those three people,
who would you want?
Good question.
Like we said earlier this week,
Shaka Smart was on Mitch Barnhart's list a couple years ago,
so I think that he's got that relationship,
and I think Mitch likes Shaka Smart,
who had kind of failed at Texas,
but then came into Marquette and has done really, really well.
Chris Beard, I think he's...
So which one?
I like Chris Beard, although he's got kind of the baggage that I don't know if Mitch
would hire him, but if I had to pick one of those three, I'd probably pick Chris Beard.
That's some big baggage, but I'd still consider Beard over the other.
Shock of Smart's NCAA tournament resume is really bad since that VCU run.
This year, they made the Sweet 16, but I think it might be the only time he's made it since VCU.
So even though they've had some great regular seasons at Marquette got a good offense,
He doesn't have a great tournament record, but you can say a lot of people.
Well, that's going to be a lot of consideration for the job.
Yeah, that's just something you've got to take him.
So who would you say?
Beard?
Lean beard, yeah.
I would lean beard slightly.
I don't think Shaqa's as big.
I don't want Sean Miller, no offense.
I just don't think that that's not the one I would want.
Do you think if they got to that level, they should call Bruce Pearl?
I'm team Bruce.
I am team.
Drew and I've been Team Bruce from a long time.
I think he deserves the phone call.
And he could do all the other stuff.
He's got the swagger.
But he lost to Yale.
Yeah.
But he's had great success.
He's rebuilt Auburn into a power down there.
Yeah.
He's not, I say Team Bruce.
He's not probably not in my top five.
But I would not be upset if it had to get to that point.
I hope you get yeses from someone ahead of him.
But I would accept Bruce and be happy about it.
I think there's also a chance that if you got past these first three,
one or two NBA names could come.
come back into the picture.
And I hesitate to say them because I don't want to ruin it.
But if you got past those three and that means it's going to take a little bit of time,
some NBA people, I think, come back into play at that place at that point as well.
Hey, stop overpaying for sunglasses.
If you're tired of buying expensive sunglasses only to lose or break them,
go to Shady Rays.
An independent American-owned company started right here in Kentucky.
50% off, two or more pairs with Shady Rays at the summit at Fritz Farm.

It'll be no problem.
Go to Shady Ray's, great sunglasses, great prices, and it's a Kentucky company right here at Shady

We're open here on Wingsday, KS Bar, already got a nice crowd of folks here getting ready.
We're not even open yet.

We will take a break.

Welcome back, Techie Sports Radio.
You know the jokes on Tyson Foods.
I can't cook.
That'll show them.
You got them.
That'll show them.
They're going to try to bribe me with food.
Well, can I have yours then?
Yes, you can have it.
A couple things.
First of all, today's the last day here at KS Bar to have a chance to win the
Masters Prize from Country Boy Brewing.
Before you leave, put your winner into the pot there.
And if your guy wins, you'll split $2,000 from Country Boy.
We've had some people put down a lot, but there are a lot of players
haven't been put down yet.
So if you put one of them, you could.
win you got till the end of the day today remember five dollar country boy all week through the
masters that's like cheaper than you can get even at their place and we got the pomeino cheese and egg
salad sandwiches which i ate one yesterday the egg salad and it's awesome i think some people are
going to try that here today too so we have the master's recipe yes here at the bar uh we got folks on
the phone 859 280 2287 one person writes matt i tuned in today for frank frank franklin does he have
anything he wants to get off his chest now that the Caliperia era is over.
I saw a lot of people want me to go scorched earth today.
I mean, we'll trickle out some stories over time,
but I don't know if today's the day to just tap on or dance on everything that's happening over there.
I'm generally sad that it's ending, so I don't, I think people want me to play a character.
I'm just not really ready to play today because that's not my emotions.
But stuff will come out over, over time.
There'll be two things that will happen over the next couple weeks.
There will be the Kyle Tucker article.
Like, one's coming.
where he talks about what all fell apart in the last two years.
And I'm sure it's going to come, and I think it's going to be needed for kind of closure.
I also think there are some things I personally am going to talk about that were wrong that happened.
But I actually don't think today is that day because I don't think we need to be like, like,
I prefer that sort of, hey, it's a sad time, let's remember the positive for now.
And then I think eventually, though, we do have to discuss where things went wrong because they did go wrong.
People have accused not many, you know, the Twitter accounts that don't listen and accuse of things.
They're acting like we're joyous about this.
And if we sit here and just started saying all the bad things from behind the scenes right now,
it would kind of look like a celebration.
And it is no way a celebration in my brain.
I thought it was time for the breakup because things have been bad.
But it's not something, you know, I'm rooting for or happy that happened.
So I'm not going to sit here and just air out dirty laundry to do it the day after it happened.
We'll talk about it at some point, but I don't really think today is the day.
Today is for what's next, and who's up first?
Got the H-Man up first.
H-man. How are you?
I'm doing great, gentlemen.
My list is two, and that is Scott Drew and Bruce Pearl.
And I don't see Danny Hurley coming here for things I don't want to mention over the air.
Okay.
All right.
So you want Bruce Pearl.
What's interesting about Bruce Pearl, and I appreciate the call.
When you say Bruce Pearl's name, I was looking at this restaurant.
I saw like three or four people shake their head, yes, and I saw three or four people shake their head and no.
Whereas, like, Scott Drew may not make everybody excited.
I don't think anybody is furious if it's him.
There'll be some people if it was Bruce Pearl that would be like, so like it'll be interesting to see if that's who it was, how you unify that group.
And I got to ask you this, because it seems to be growing.
in popularity, bringing Rick Petino back.
It's not growing to me.
I mean, leave everything else aside.
He's 70-some years old.
And I know we're about to elect a president that we have a president that's 70-some-year-old.
We're probably going to elect another one that's 77-some-years-old either way.
But I just think in college basketball, what, you're going to get Rick?
He's going to be here, what, two, three years?
I mean, like, no, I just don't think that's what you would do.
I know that seems to be growing where people like, I'll take a good two-year-old.
or three-year run with Petino.
Now, if we get turned down by all three of those guys,
I mean, it's at least worth considering,
but I don't think,
I will be very surprised if one of those three dudes is not the coach here.
That's where I am right now.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I will be surprised.
And I think it will be seen amongst UK had a list of about seven people
that they considered A-plus candidates.
Most of them did, I think three of them just did.
didn't want to be either here or in college basketball.
One of them is kind of in that NBA thing where I think people are waiting to see what
happens and then you got the three that we all know.
So I think Kentucky wants one of those people.
And I think that's the goal.
Who's next?
Jackson is up next.
Jackson, go ahead.
Hey, Matt.
I think I have an interesting perspective on this whole cow thing because most young fans, like 18, 19,
they all want cow to stay, but me personally, I've never witnessed any of Cal's good seasons.
I started really watching Kentucky basketball around 2019, the COVID year.
So you're so young, you don't remember when Kentucky was really good with Cal.
So you're ready for something else because you haven't even gotten new experience a really good year yet.
Mm-hmm.
I'm excited for the next.
coach and see if he can get something done.
But I really hope it's Danny Hurley.
Well, I appreciate the call.
I think, so yeah, I think the best way to say it officially, because I'm being asked,
people are saying that, like, they're, officially, I don't think Scott Drew or Danny
Hurley have been given the job, offered it.
But I think they both know if one of them were to say yes today, it'd probably be theirs.
So everybody's on the clock
And we'll see what happened
And by the way, I think Donovan would be in the exact same position
If he didn't have that playoff game next week
I think that playoff game next week has made it to where
Because you got to remember, we've been burned by Billy before
Billy told Mitch once before he was going to take the job
And then backed out
And so I think Mitch still likes him
But there's a sense of I can't wait on you
And then you do that to me again
Right?
So, like, that's why I think if they have one of these other A options ready to go, they do it.
Does that make sense?
Makes total sense.
Yeah, we'll take a break.
We'll come back.
Hour number two.
