Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headline. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:00 And for more, follow Timbo Slica Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Clivert Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, Hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. A rep, my mama want you to wave at her.
Starting point is 00:01:30 What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford Show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Looking for a mortgage bank to help you make your next major mortgage move, whether it's a refi or a home purchase, regardless of whether it's your first one or one of many.
Starting point is 00:01:52 Consider our friends at Stockton Mortgage. But don't just take our word for it. Stockton Mortgage has over 70,000 five-star reviews and counting. just like this review from Joshua, who says this about his experience with Stockton. They were super professional. Always answered my questions I had and streamlined the process. I could not ask for better people to help me and my family get our first house. I feel blessed to be able to go through them.
Starting point is 00:02:17 Be like Joshua, or the 69,999 others just like him, and get started with Stockton Mortgage Today by going to Stockton.com and get started. I've even used Stockton Mortgage myself on my own home loan. your home loan needs stockton dot com and click get started stockton mortgage nmLS 8259 equal housing lender nmLS consumer access dot org welcome back out number two katea sports radio here at the ks bar and grill uh all kinds of stuff going on wings day masters food ufc's here saturday ufc's here saturday a lot drew is just back from the masters drew uh you said you had a master's ksr store i did little blue got in at augusta My dear friend Aaron Fleener, he is a caddy on tour,
Starting point is 00:03:04 so I went and followed them with JT. Posten for nine holes. But he told me he walked over to the ropes on one of the holes and said, he's in the caddies locker room in Augusta, heard a little familiar noise and KSR was playing. So he went up to the guy, and the guy that runs the caddy stand at Augusta National, Ray from Rock Castle is a everyday KSR listener. So I got to go over there and meet him and see where the caddies go.
Starting point is 00:03:28 That's cool. Yeah, Fleeter's getting ready for the biggest golf tournament. year and it's like what is that noise what is that sound i know that noise hello to ray rock castle gets everyone ready to go out to augustin national this week and he's a regular listener so i got to meet ray and see some things a lot of people don't get see i guess and uh it was a very cool experience but i thought it was neat that blue got in at a place that's uh pretty special and hard to i'm sure that's a difficult job to get we got a ksr listener in there well shout out to ray from rock castle also shout out to billy who filled filled in uh the last two days while he was gone and shout out to
Starting point is 00:03:59 Mario. If you're not following Mario yet, my man put out video content yesterday that would have taken me a month that Ryan would have never even logged in to do. I mean, he took my little thing about all the best moments, put it to video. He's got numbers out. So I had a couple people ask me like, well, who is this kid? So we're going to do, I'm going to film him today. I'm going to film him an intro video of who he is that then you have to edit. I don't know how to do it. But I will, I'll take the camera and actually film it so that everybody learns who he is as well. I enjoyed hearing his radio appearance yesterday.
Starting point is 00:04:38 I heard the show on my trip back, got to hear him. He said he was nervous. I thought he did great. He killed it. Did a great job. Good on your debut. 859-280-2287. If you have a question, text machine, 772-7-75-4, one person writes,
Starting point is 00:04:52 I don't understand why our fan base is not ecstatic about Scott Drew. He has the best resume of any coach to ever come here. Think about it. We've never had a coach come here. He's won a national championship. We've only had two that came here with a final four. His recruiting is already better than anyone that's ever come here except Cal. Why doesn't everyone think he will succeed?
Starting point is 00:05:16 That's kind of where my mindset is. I mean, when you look at Baylor's results, just remember, it's Baylor. You know, Rick Petino when he came here had been at Providence, had made one final four and been decent with the Knicks. John Caliperi, when he'd been here, had been to two final fours, but it also missed like seven NCAA tournaments at UMass and at Memphis, right? Tubby Smith, when he came here, had been a good coach at Tulsa. And guess what all three of those guys did? They won a national championship. And now we're getting a guy who's our?
Starting point is 00:05:56 already done it. Like, that's, I think, pretty good. I mean, could it not work out? Of course it couldn't. But like, isn't he, along with Hurley, the best bet? And like you said, he's an eyelash or maybe winning two or three national championships in his tenure at Baylor. I think people forget. I think people forget that the COVID year, Dayton was going to be the number one overall seed, but Baylor and Kansas were probably the two other favorites for that tournament. People forget that. And then the next year, Carolina upsets them in the second round, and Carolina ends up in the championship game that year. And to do it where he did it in a conference where Kansas is king,
Starting point is 00:06:38 he won the conference a couple times and one, I mean, Baylor should never win that conference. And then what he did there, you give that man all the resources he'll have here, and I think it'll be a good outcome if that's who they get. I think people are underestimating how much money the new hire, whoever it is, will have from boosters. because they want to prove it's Kentucky. Yeah, I wasn't Cal.
Starting point is 00:06:58 It wasn't anyone else. It's Kentucky. So the next person, the boosters are going to go out of the way to prove that Kentucky is Kentucky. Let me address that. I think that's a very, very key point. So I thought one of the most self-aware things John Calapary said in his comment was, and I give him credit for this, this had to be hard for him to do. He said, I think this fan base is ready for a new voice.
Starting point is 00:07:20 Yes. That's hard to say, if you're that man. but he's also right. And everybody knows the media and the fans, but let me talk about the boosters. They needed a new voice. This is a time where boosters probably matter more than they've mattered in a long time.
Starting point is 00:07:38 And I don't think it's a secret that we had some high, high-level boosters that were just not participating with basketball. I think if it's Danny Hurley or Scott Drew, I know those people are about to be re-energized. Now, we still have an issue with fan collectives. All of them, first of all, we might have too many, but secondly, all of them need to do things a little better.
Starting point is 00:08:05 But put that to the side, the big money boosters, if it's Danny Hurley, Billy Donovan, Scott Drew, they'll be all in. Now, you get beyond that, I don't know as much. But those three, they'll be in. And I think Drew hit it. There's going to be, it is not a secret that there are some boosters that didn't particularly click with Cal. Just like Cal is going to be motivated to go to Arkansas and say, hey, you needed me, the people here are going to be motivated to say, hey, you needed us. So like both sides are going to be
Starting point is 00:08:39 motivated. The common fan that's having these conversations on Twitter and message boards about how they worry they are about what the roster will look like, our super rich donors have those same concerns and they can do something about it. And I think they'll make sure it can tell you. is in a good place so that it doesn't look like this was the University of Cal. They're going to make sure Kentucky is still the top dog and going to do well. I'm not saying the roster. I'm not worried about the roster. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but I'm not.
Starting point is 00:09:04 If it's Danny Hurley, you're going to get every transfer in the country you want. If it's Scott Drew, you're going to get three of the top recruits. Remember, Jaden Quaintens, the kid that's that's, that was committed here for Cal and was 16. Do you know who his second choice was? Baylor. So he might choose to stay here rather than go to Fayetteville. I don't know. But, I mean, it's not out of the question.
Starting point is 00:09:29 Who's up next? Nate is up next. Nate, go ahead, Nate. What's up, guys? So I know Shannon posts to this. We've been, we have a super sleuth kind of on, on Twitter who's been finding flights. We can't find any, but someone has found a picture of the crap's private jet. I can't verify it yet.
Starting point is 00:09:50 that has gone to Waco and in route back. Trying to verify that right now. It's really interesting. But like you guys have been hitting on Scott Drew and how some people might be disappointed. I think what a lot of Kentucky fans would be disappointed with is if it happened really fast like yesterday. And we didn't actually feel like we swung for the fence on either Billy
Starting point is 00:10:10 Donovan or Hurley or something like that. I don't think Scott Drew, let me be, I'm fairly confident of this. If we pick Scott Drew, we it's because we also didn't get Danny Hurley. I do think Scott Drew is ahead of Billy Donovan in the pecking order, but I think it's more of a timing thing than anything else. So I think if you got Scott Drew, you probably got your second choice or your first choice just wouldn't commit.
Starting point is 00:10:42 Because I do think there is a, I do think there's a belief around UK that this has to happen quickly because they have to go get a roster. Yeah. Yeah, I agree with that. I think that's a good shout. I think, like I said, Kentucky fans just want to feel like we tried.
Starting point is 00:10:57 And, I mean, look, you've got to give Hurley a lot of credit if he does say no, because everything's pointing from things that you've seen that this might be the highest paid coach in Collegian Athletics history kind of an offer. And if he says no, I mean, that's a heck of a thing. And honestly, if he says no to that, you don't want to hear.
Starting point is 00:11:14 I totally agree with you, sir. I appreciate the call. If Danny Hurley, Danny Hurley, will be offered or maybe has been offered. I don't know. I can't say for sure. But he would be offered money that would make him the highest paid coach in college athletics, not just basketball, athletics. If he turns that down, well, you did all you could do. Yep. Like, I mean, what else are you going to do? You can't, you can't take the guy hostage and make him come coach here. So you did all you can do. Scott Drew might get that same offer. I would be a little surprised if it was
Starting point is 00:11:45 that much, but I'm not there. Maybe he does. Again, as Drew always says, it's not my money, so what do I care? But what does Scott Drew make now? Scott Drew, I said 3.5, I think it got raised to 4.8. But, like,
Starting point is 00:12:01 whereas Yukon might be able to match the money, I don't think Baylor's matching that money. So, like, because it's not just $5 million a year. It's $5 million more or $6 million more over the course of five years, which is $30 million. And remember with John Caliperi, we weren't going to pay a buyout that was 35.
Starting point is 00:12:21 And we, the other thing to remember about this, we're about to get in a situation where starting next year, we have a heck of a lot more money than any school that's not in the SEC or Big Ten. The new TV contract kicks in this fall. And it's going to make it to where the SEC and Big Ten make about $40 million more a year per school than the ACC and Big 12. and probably 60 or 70 million more than the Big East where Yukon is. So, I mean, Yukon, if they've ended up paying Danny Hurley $10 or $11 million, then that just came out of some rich dude's pocket because the school doesn't have it. Because the school doesn't even have football.
Starting point is 00:13:02 You know, we got the SEC network. You got all kinds of ways to bring in money over here. I'm going to compete with that. What's next? Got John up next. John, go ahead, John. Yeah, this kind of goes along with the last caller. and kind of going back to the guy on Monday tracking Kyle's flight.
Starting point is 00:13:19 There's a private jet that left Teeterbird, New Jersey this morning, and landed in Lexington at 1045 and doesn't leave again until 640 tonight. I didn't know what you all thought was the odd. That's actually early. That doesn't necessarily mean anything to me because that Teeterboro, New Jersey, I love that we're tracking planes. The Teeterboro, New Jersey, that's the private airport for everyone in New York City. So pretty much every major, like,
Starting point is 00:13:45 Like when I told you that story about flying back from the All-Star game in New York, we flew out of that. Like, that's the New York. So like a New York jet on a Wednesday of Keenland coming from New York to Lexington and then going back at 630, that would strike me as more of a Keenland flight than it would a UK basketball flight. Perfect. Well, thank you for taking my call. Appreciate the call. Do you agree with that, Drew?
Starting point is 00:14:11 Yeah, that's why a lot of these I've completely been ignoring until that Waco and I don't know the horse racing enthusiasts in Waco, but anything coming out of Jersey, there's probably a lot of people coming in. Yeah, I would say, I would say it's going to be impossible to track, quote-unquote, Danny Hurley, because he would be flying out of the same, if he flew out of New Jersey, he's flying out of the same private airport that everyone in New York City flies out of, and that's unlike. I'll add, while we're talking horse racing slash Danny Hurley, Bobby,
Starting point is 00:14:45 is into horse racing big. That's right. He has stuff down in Hollywood, Florida. I mean, I don't know that the family is, but they're up there by Momoth Park. Danny's a Bengals fan? Yeah, they're Bengals fans. Maybe the horse racing thing could help add to the draw of Kentucky because there is a lot of the family connection there that they're into it.
Starting point is 00:15:01 I think that flight out of Teterboro, the flack, it flies back at 640. It's pretty indicative that it's a Keenland. That's a Keenland thing, I would think. Because, you know, New York guys are coming down here to watch their horse race on a day probably a lot. Who's next? Jody is up next. Jody, go ahead.
Starting point is 00:15:18 Jody. Hey, guys. I just wanted to say, I'm really excited for, and hopeful that the next coach sort of engages the fans. I think that really fell off a lot with Cal. They will. Did you see Mitch Barnhart statement yesterday? I thought this was important on that point.
Starting point is 00:15:37 Mitch Barnhart's statement, he ended with our next coach needs to understand the impact of what the University of Kentucky basketball is. to the state. I don't think that was a coincidence. And I, and so I, I think whoever the next one is will do that. Yeah. And it was like, I was all like, I was defending cow tooth and nail, tooth and until the Benny lineup year. And it was just like he was so hostile toward fans. And that really sort of frustrated me. And then when he shushed fans one time, I think they were chanting something and he didn't like it. And I'm like, just let them cheat. They're there.
Starting point is 00:16:16 Who cares? What do you care what? They weren't chaining anything negative about our team. So what do we care what they say about the other team? But I just, I really am excited. And I really also do hope Cal does well because he did do us a favor. I was kind of frustrated with how it all went down. But instead of being sad on Monday night championship night that we weren't playing,
Starting point is 00:16:37 he actually did us a parting favor and made us excited. No, no, he did. It ended, I think, as well as it could. And I appreciate the call. also found it telling not going to lie that in his four-minute thank-you video, John Calgary thanked everyone involved with UK athletics except the AD. He thanked the fans, he think the players, he thanked everyone. He did not think the AD or Mitch Barnardt.
Starting point is 00:17:03 I mean, maybe that's just overlooking it, but he was reading off a sheet of paper. You could see him looking down. And if it wasn't on there, then that means he didn't want to say it. I didn't catch that to be honest. I didn't catch that either. I mean, that would be telling, though. I mean, that would be telling. Another reason that TV thing was so weird.
Starting point is 00:17:23 That TV thing, people kept saying to me, especially that night, they were like throwing that in my face and going, see, you said they don't have a relationship. That was just a show. Like, that was a television show. Like, it just was. They did not like each other. And that's okay. It happens, you know, but it was true. That TV interview is something.
Starting point is 00:17:44 going to talk about 10 years from now and think about the bromance that we saw for that 30-minute show. Go back and look at the body language, though, now knowing what happens a week later. Mitch is trying a lot harder than the other guy is. And he opened up the show with, like, talk about how it's garbage. People said they didn't have a relationship. Well, that was Mitch saying that, though. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:06 Did you, Cal didn't say that. Mitch said that. Club Blue is a UK NIL subscription service. 100% of the proceeds goes to NIL. It's going to be huge for whoever's next. And they partner with JMI and the University of Kentucky to give fans a ton of opportunities. Autograph memorabilia, meet and greets, that thing that's coming here Friday with Antonio Reeves. That's a Club Blue NIL event.
Starting point is 00:18:29 And if you come here Friday to meet Antonio Reeves and get signed, you can learn more about all the things they do. You can actually talk to the people that run Club Blue NIL. They'll be here Friday night. It's ClubBlueNIL.com. Learn more at ClubBlueNIL.com. We'll take a break and be right back. This is KSR. Welcome back.
Starting point is 00:18:59 It is Kentucky Sports Radio. John Rothstein with some breaking news, Rick. John Rossstein of CBS Sports says Kentucky plans to officially meet with Baylor Scott Drew regarding its head coaching vacancy in the near future. That's not crazy news, but I think it is a little bit of news, but near future could mean anytime. I guess that would mean you don't have. someone else yet but other than that near future is a broad timeline yeah so uh yeah i mean that doesn't
Starting point is 00:19:33 i think that fits with everything the only question for me is has has danny hurley said no yet i have not heard he has said no um but until that happens i still think it's it's one of those two guys but i need if you i need to hear that he says no and then if he does then i don't then i I'm going to start learning the Scott Drew offense, probably. I think a lot of the fans will be excited for Scott Drew if that's the case, but they'll need to hear that there was at least an attempt at landing the best coach in college basketball. I got to say, the guy just texted me, and he's been right on everything so far, that they've told Scott Drew you got 24 hours, yes or no.
Starting point is 00:20:17 Who's this person? Now, remember, the other day, what was it you threw out the other day, that you said you had heard? What was that? get what it was. Well, first of all, it was clearly great news if you already forgot what it was. But what was the thing? You said something that was like, so-and-so told you, and then I was like, is that true?
Starting point is 00:20:35 Oh, that's when everybody was saying Billy Donovan was here in town that day. But that wasn't true. Right. I didn't say I didn't believe it. I was just, you know, it was one of those wild rumors how Billy Donovan buys an horse. What is it that you're, what is the wild goose chase rumor you're saying now? This guy told me on Monday that John Wilch was leaving to go to Fresno, State. Why didn't you say that? I didn't believe him. I didn't trust this guy. I had no idea.
Starting point is 00:20:59 Okay. Hang on just a second, Drew. My man gets told John Welch is going to, let me give you, can I give you a little secret? Yeah. This is how you filter news. The more random and specific it is, probably the more true it is. So if someone told me John Welch is going to Fresno State, who just decides Fresno State out of the air? I would actually tend to believe that. more than Billy Donovan is in town, which anyone could say. Does that make sense? It does. So I actually am, why didn't you say the John Welch one?
Starting point is 00:21:34 Because, believe it or not, I'm a reporter at its core, and I can't take an anonymous texter telling me that. But you did take an anonymous texter the next day. Didn't you five minutes ago just taking an anonymous texter? We were practically joking about the Billy Donovan stuff. All right. So is this one of Donovan? Is this more Welch or more Donovan?
Starting point is 00:21:52 He said on. Who's he? This texter. And I have no idea who it is. Wait, you just said anonymous texters. You just said you wouldn't take an anonymous textor, and now you're taking it. You guys, I told you, he ended up being right. Okay.
Starting point is 00:22:07 Which one did this guy say? This guy said that John Welch. Okay, so this is the John Welch guy. Yes. Now I like more credibility there. Yes, so it ended up being right. So now he's saying they've told Scott Drew 24 hours, yes or no. and they're really they've not
Starting point is 00:22:24 let me just read it what he said so I get it exactly right. The source is John Welch Anonymous Textor. Now I will say, look how I got him saved in my phone. Let me see. I'm going to see what this guy's written you in the past. Okay. Okay. Let me see here. Here we go. So this is the first ever text you got from this. Correct.
Starting point is 00:22:40 John Welch is going to Fresno State. Does this dude really call Brad Cala Perry Color Me Brad will take his place at Arkansas? Yeah. Color me Brad. It's going to Arkansas. All right. And then when it comes out, you text him, you were right.
Starting point is 00:23:00 And he says, maybe that'll give me some credibility. I have got more juicy items. Yes. Then his next comment to you is Billy was not in Lexington today. That was also correct. Yes. All right. So now we have two correct things.
Starting point is 00:23:13 Then he says, Scott Drew has been told he must say yes or no within 24 hours. Danny hasn't officially said no, but they are still talking with him in case he does. That kind of goes along what you just said, that they've not heard a no, definite no from Danny. So, Donnie has not said. Danny, Danny Osmond is also not going to be the coach. Danny has not said no yet, says John Welch guy. Yes. All right.
Starting point is 00:23:42 John Welch guy. And I mean, he's been right so far. Well, first of all, everything he said is very similar to what? Yes. To what we've heard. That's why I felt comfortable by saying it now. Let's just talk about John Welch, not going. going to Arkansas.
Starting point is 00:23:55 Kyle Tucker reports John Welch was not going to come back to Kentucky either. That makes me even more glad this happened. If we had lost our X and O guy, that would worry me, especially a guy who'd just been here a year and had known Cal his whole life and whose son played for Cal. If he was not going to stay here and was going to go to Fresno State, Drew, for what was almost certainly less money, that would have been worries.
Starting point is 00:24:25 I was a little surprised by that, but also thought, you know what we've talked about behind the scenes, how that environment isn't what it needs to be. I don't know what he thought at all, but it's something else. Just nothing in my brain that further confirms that behind the scenes that we weren't being the gold standard, because there's no reason he would want to leave for Fresno State
Starting point is 00:24:42 if everything was still going to be good moving on to next season. It's puzzling to me because there was no complaints about the offense. The exes and owes the offense issue was good. Imagine that was the one change. But that means he just didn't want to be here. Yeah. I mean, the reality is if he was going to, leave here to go to Fresno State, which was almost certainly going to be less money than what he
Starting point is 00:24:59 made here. He didn't want to be here. Yep. And that's troubling. And maybe more reason why what happened yesterday is the best for everybody involved. We'll take a break. Come back here. Wingsday.
Starting point is 00:25:11 KS. Bonn. Welcome back, Techie Sports Radio. All right. So I have an update. There are multiple TV crews at the airport waiting for this Waco to Lexington flight. So I don't we don't know who's on it But here's what's gonna be really funny is if people step off that plane
Starting point is 00:25:46 That have nothing to do with this And like all of a sudden there are just all these TV crews Looking at these random people getting off the plane like what? What is happening? Let me get all of these cowboy hat going to Keenland guys cowboy boots on Woohoo let's go And then he's like hello I thank you yes my horse is running in the fifth race today I hope all of you enjoy it
Starting point is 00:26:07 But there are apparently at least two different TV stations at the airport waiting to see and looking at the flight tracker, which somebody just sent, it is supposed to land in the next 20 minutes. Looking at famous people. I can't believe that stuff's out there, by the way, for people to see it. Go ahead. It's pretty easy to find. I've been doing that for years myself.
Starting point is 00:26:27 But looking up famous people from Waco, it could also be Jennifer Love Hewitt or, like I said earlier, Chip and Joanna Gaines, maybe you're coming in for a little home renovation. You look like you have another John Welch guy thing. Well, I laugh because it's about you. What do you mean it's about me? From John Welch guy? Yeah. Let me see.
Starting point is 00:26:48 Matt knows who I am. Well, okay, I don't know who he is. I mean, I might know who he is. I don't know who he is either. I really don't. But I trust his information now because he's been right two straight times. So I'm willing to. We're not going to say who you are.
Starting point is 00:27:01 I mean, I think we need to work on Ryan's filter of what gets through. No, I think I have. handled it right. I didn't report it Monday when he was done. Then he was right. So now I trust these information a little bit more. Leave this situation aside. When you're on your couch and you're getting all these texts about whatever, how do you believe one and not the other? What is the Ryan filter? I got to hear it twice. First of all, I get, I get at times like right now, the text machine, I'm getting hundreds an hour. And it's clear to me there are people trying to like get me to say something just to see if I'll do it. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:27:37 So I am pretty good. I'm with Ryan. I don't say anything. Your first information for me doesn't usually make me move. But if you've told me one thing in the past, you basically second scoop wins. Yeah. That's kind of how I am.
Starting point is 00:27:53 If you did the first one, especially if it's wild. And somebody who just says to me, the next coach is going to be Scott Drew, well, no kidding. You could be guessing. Like I, but like, you know, but once somebody's gotten something right, then I'm with you, Ryan. That's when you start to say.
Starting point is 00:28:09 And so many people were talking about Billy Donovan being here. I thought we were just kind of joking about it. We all knew that was it. We're kidding with you. Don't worry about it. You're good. It's an Otwell thing. What's next?
Starting point is 00:28:18 It's an hotwill thing. Phil's up next. Phil? Phil. Phil. Hey, Matt, boys. I'm a long time. What's up?
Starting point is 00:28:31 Who up? Can you hear me? Yes, go ahead. Hey, I have the way Calp here. could have salvaged this if he had wanted to. Okay. So he, 15 years as long as him and Ellen have lived anywhere, which is here. You know, he's made over $100 million his career, well over $100 million.
Starting point is 00:28:53 He obviously didn't, was bittersweet about the announcement yesterday. But what he could have done is said, look, I'll take that retirement option now. And then he the ambassador, to be fair. So, to be fair, it's hard to ask a dude to leave $35 million on the table, right? Like, I mean, like, you know, if you're him and you're owed $35 million and another university is willing to pay you that $35 million, are you going to retire and just not take the money? I just don't think people are going to do that. No, I get the money angle, but here's what I'm, you know, he's 65. So let's say he goes to Arkansas, not necessarily.
Starting point is 00:29:37 knowing if it's going to work or not, thinking it will. But if it doesn't, then what does he do? Where do they go? They go back to Moon Township? Yeah, he'll have a TV career. I mean, I don't think John Calpare is unemployable for anything he wants to do. I mean, I will say, and I appreciate the call, I don't think he wanted it to end like this. I think he, this is, I don't know this, but I think in a year or two, he's probably going to go,
Starting point is 00:30:02 what am I doing in Fayetteville? Again, I'll use the example of pro wrestling. You know, it can be sad when you see Rick Flair be at the top of his game, and then he's wrestling in a high school gym in whatever. That can be not because there's anything wrong with wrestling in a high school gym, that's how we make a living. But when you've been to the mountaintop and then you do that, that's different. Now, Arkansas is not a high school gym.
Starting point is 00:30:33 Arkansas is still a really very good program. but it's not this, right? It's not this. And so I think there will be a moment where I know he wishes it didn't end like this, don't you think? I think, well, even Petino, you know, years later, says he probably should have never left Kentucky. And I think Cal did salvage a lot of our relationship with him from the video last night. But I'm telling you, when he walks in there wearing that red blazer at Rupp Arena, we're all going to be booing him and want to beat his butt sending him back home to Fayetteville.
Starting point is 00:31:01 See, I think what's, okay, that's interesting. I don't think he would get booed next week. I don't. I think whether he gets booed in February next year is going to depend on how he acts between now and then. It's going to depend on what he says. It's going to be like it's going to depend on if he throws shade. If he were to play here next week, I actually don't think he would get booed. But Drew, we'll have to see what happens between now and then.
Starting point is 00:31:29 Does that make sense? Yeah, we all know his personality. We don't know what he'll say when he gets to Arkansas. saw, but he might be a little shade thrown back our way. We don't know yet. We'll see what happens. If he does get there and there's a little bit of the, you know, at the old place, there aren't the real fans and some of that stuff.
Starting point is 00:31:45 That's the stuff where the bridge is still good right now. I can't speak for everyone, but I think a lot of people, the bridge is still great. If he gets up there, so he'll get introduced at a press conference, I think probably tomorrow, but he'll get introduced at a press conference, and there'll be a ton of people show up, and they'll call the hogs, and they'll go, ooh, whew, whee. That's really good. And they'll do that, and he'll give that, you know what he'll do, he'll give that smile and be like, this is crazy, you people are like, and like they'll eat it up, right?
Starting point is 00:32:14 They'll love it. If he then goes, you know what, these are real fans, burb, brub, but that's how you get booed. But if he doesn't do any of that stuff, then I actually think it won't be as bad as maybe I thought it would be five days ago. I think that's a good analogy that how he handles himself. between now and when he brings his team into up next February or January, whenever it is. Depends on a lot how we will view him. It felt yesterday.
Starting point is 00:32:42 Here's what I felt like the fan base felt yesterday. It felt like people that were very anti-Cal and people that were very pro-Cal kind of came together and said, this is a sad day, but it's time for a new era and let's go forward. Yeah. Right? I feel like, and that we needed that,
Starting point is 00:33:03 To his credit, his video helped do that. I think people sitting and thinking about the memories help do that. And then for a lot of the big pro cow people, the realization of, I still want to cheer for Kentucky, so let's go get a good coach. That helped. So I actually think this fan base is in a good place right now. Yeah. If we get Hurley or Drew, I think we're in a good place. Now, if it slips below that, that's different.
Starting point is 00:33:30 That's why even immediately after the Oakland game when I thought, I want new chapters. on both side. Cal needs a fresh start somewhere with full support. Kentucky needs something new. I didn't want him to just keep limping farther and farther away at Kentucky from when it was good. If he had had another bad next year, another bad next season, then the bad
Starting point is 00:33:48 starts out weighing the good, but I think stepping away when he did, even though the last four years were pretty rough and not what Kentucky should be, there's still so much more good. And I'm glad it ended now, and so far it's been pretty respectfully because I don't think we were ever going to get back to what it was, and that was the problem.
Starting point is 00:34:03 Who's next? Jacob is up next. Jacob, go ahead, Jacob. Hey, what's up, Matt? So, you know, I have a pretty interesting perspective as well, just like that first caller in the first, or the last caller in the first hour. You know, I've just grown up, you know,
Starting point is 00:34:19 all basketball has been for me is Cal. But, you know, I know we're worried about finding a coach right now because, you know, we need a good coach and win games. But who are some of your favorite guys out of the transfer portal and who are some of your guys that you think we've got really pulled off. I honestly have not followed the transfer portal enough to say. I mean, so I don't know. My view had been, and I appreciate the call, that the cow stuff need to be taken care of first,
Starting point is 00:34:47 and then I would start looking at that. So let's see who we hire. Let's just say it's Danny Hurley. If it's Danny Hurley, there's probably going to be a couple guys that are on Yukon that'll end up here. There'll probably be a couple of his commitments that'll end up here. and then he'll go rack up the best portal dudes. If it's Scott Drew, probably two or three of the guys he's got committed to Baylor come here. He probably gets a couple players he's got at Baylor to come here.
Starting point is 00:35:11 Maybe he tries to keep Quaintance. I'm sure the first call either Danny Hurley or Scott Drew would make is to read Shepard and say, hey, man, what do you think? Like one more run? So let's see who it is. And then I think I can better, Drew, sort of try to figure out who would be on the roster. I had my own little portal list when I thought it was still Cal in this recruiting class because you had some spots already filled with freshmen, had some hopefuls coming back.
Starting point is 00:35:39 Cliff Amory, the big guy from Rutgers is who I wanted. But now the new coach, I assume, will have a blank canvas. So I'm not as, you know, don't have specific names because I don't even know what they're going to show up with and what positions they'll need to fill. Let me tell you something. V.J. Edgecombe? If Scott Drew comes, he was the most, he was the most exciting player in the McDonald's game. If y'all haven't looked yet, this afternoon, get on Twitter or get on social media and watch the dunk he did in the dunk contest.
Starting point is 00:36:08 You saw it, right, Mark? I mean, that was Vince Carter 20 years ago. Like, it was, I remember thinking, man, that kid. Cream Abdul Jbar is in the transfer pool. He already went to St. Louis. Oh, he did go with his coach to St. Louis. Yeah, he already went to St. Louis. Shoot, that's one I'm hoping maybe they could recruit.
Starting point is 00:36:27 You think that would be what the new coach's first gift was? I got to go get Larry nerd. Yes. Dork Novitsky. Hey, it's birthday time for our friends at cornbread hemp. KSR listeners, we've been doing it for five years and it to celebrate Corbreds doing their buy one, get one free. Now through the end of the week, cornbread hemp.com.
Starting point is 00:36:48 The promo code is KSR5. Remember, KSR 5, buy one, get one free. If there was ever a time to try it, this week is it. KSR 5, it's at cornbread hemp. Big crowd here. today. See, this is that partially how you know it's invigorated. Yep. People are, they're feeling the juice and we'll take a break and be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:37:14 Yeah, they're flying and out of Toyota. Wow. Welcome back Kentucky Sports Radio. I love it. There are multiple, somebody just wrote this, the text machine, too, that they think the, uh, somebody got word and they've now diverted to a different airport. I love it. I think that's so funny. The TV crews sit out there and they'll go, let's fly to Georgetown or Cincinnati instead.
Starting point is 00:37:41 That wouldn't be the dumbest thing in the world. It'd be smart, actually, if everybody's waiting at bluegrass and I just want to, I still hope that there's no one on that plane associated with this. And I want to see them get off and just be looking at all these people. And they're like, hey, what are you doing here? But if they did, in fact, divert makes me think they are on that plane. I think that's an admission of guilt. Well, how do we find out if they diverted?
Starting point is 00:38:06 Plain tracker. You can follow about any plane you want it. See if they landed in Georgetown. And now the TV crews are going, ah! Yeah, they're running to their car. Got to get to Georgetown. Unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:38:16 This is the kind of, this is in, this, just for the record, this is insane behavior that, uh, that, that we, we have here. We are here at K, uh, KS bar. Remember, today's the last day to fill out your master's thing. Uh, we have the pommino cheese and egg salad sandwiches,
Starting point is 00:38:31 wings. It's wings day. everything happening right now here at KS Bar. And we just got a few minutes left. So who's up next? Got Mike up next. Mike, what's up, Mike? By the way, it feels like this is the day.
Starting point is 00:38:45 It does. It does feel like today or tonight this is happening. It just, I mean, that's not scoop. That's just a feeling. Like, it feels like when we sit down here tomorrow, like we're going to know something. But go ahead, Mike. Hey, yeah, man, how y'all doing?
Starting point is 00:39:02 Good. Listen, I want to bring a new, a different perspective. I don't know if anybody's mentioned about Scott Drew at Baylor. I'm from West Texas, so I grew up. I was born there. My parents moved to Kentucky while I go boys. But I've got cousins all over Texas, some of whom went to Baylor. And to put in perspective about academics,
Starting point is 00:39:25 Baylor is kind of like the Van derail to the SEC. Yes, it is. Just think about Vanderbilt being. being competitive in the SEC. That is what you, they don't compromise their academics at all. They do a little bit. Yeah, I mean, but yes, you're right.
Starting point is 00:39:43 I mean, I think I've said this before. In every power conference, we've talked about it. In every power conference, they intentionally have at least one private school. That way they don't have to release their books. Because if all the schools were public schools, they'd have to release their books. So the reason Vanity's in the SEC,
Starting point is 00:40:02 is it makes it to where the SEC doesn't have to release all their books. Same thing for Northwestern in the Big Ten. Same thing for Duke and Wake Forest in the ACC. And then Baylor was that school in the Big 12. Baylor was the school that you had in because they're not a public school. It made it to where you didn't have to release the books. Throw Duke out of it, okay, because Duke's a unique situation. But Wake Forest Fandy Northwestern, historically, were those basketball powerhouses?
Starting point is 00:40:30 No. No. And so was Baylor was just like that. It's just Scott Drew turned him into a team that we think should be good. Yeah, yeah, exactly, exactly. That's all I've got. But I was saying, I just think about it. And Scott Drew, you know, when they were talking about who was going to replace when he retired,
Starting point is 00:40:51 Cal when he retired, even before all this other stuff happened, I was thinking I'd love to have Scott Drew coach at Kentucky when Cal's, when cows are the power. Well, I appreciate the call. Thank you, sir. It looks like the plane turned around over Cynthia. This is awesome. This is awesome.
Starting point is 00:41:13 I wish we could stay on the radio and just follow the plane. Cynthia, if you're in Cynthia, look up. Look up and see where it is. Come on, Joe. Just bring him down. Just let him wave. Cynthia doesn't have an airport, does it? It's in Georgetown.
Starting point is 00:41:34 It's in Georgetown. I'm not say there's not a Cynthia airport that could... Georgetown's little airport does all the Toyota in and out people. There's a lot of airports that could land a plane like that. Yeah. You could land that in Middlesbril. Sure. Glasgow.
Starting point is 00:41:46 So you could go to Glasgow. Can't confirm? Who's next? Todd is up next. Todd. What's up, Todd? Hello, Matt. I'm surprised no one has made mention of Brad Stevens.
Starting point is 00:41:58 They ought to at least make an effort to... I think they did. I think they did reach out to him. Brad Stevens. I think I have no I think there was a communication that basically like
Starting point is 00:42:14 whether there was interest or not the Celtics are going to be playing until June and you can't walk away when they're going to potentially be playing for a title until June. Yeah. That's a problem with an NBA person is if they have a chance to win the title
Starting point is 00:42:33 that season goes so long. You know, you got to remember, we hired Rick Petino in like mid-May from the Knicks, right? That wouldn't happen now. You can't wait that long. So that's the problem. But I do think they did reach out to Brad Stevens. Well, I think that it must be they're going to get Scott Drew because if that plane went straight to Waco and it's scheduled to come back to Lexington, immediately, who else could it be?
Starting point is 00:43:01 That's what I'm saying. And there are now 1,900 people online tracking the plane. Are you kidding? That's good. You know what, and I appreciate the call. I know that's weird, and I get it. But I will say this, this fan base needed that jolt of energy like that. Like that jolt of energy we have right now, this kind of insanity of this really is what we are.
Starting point is 00:43:26 Like, remember, we all stared and looked at a door in 2009 to see if John Caliperi was going to come here. This is who we are. And for people like Jackson, who was a kid, this is how it was from 2009 to about 2018. We obsessed over everything. And then something happened. In part, I think it was us losing. In part, it was COVID. People stayed home and got cynical.
Starting point is 00:43:48 Now this fan base drew, they needed this. This is what we needed. Whether it's Danny Hurley, Scott Drew, or somebody else, this is, I think, something this fan base need. And to continue your theme and your message, first impressions, whoever this new coach is, we're going to let you know we're crazy right away and we're passionate. Wheels down in Georgetown. I got literally 17 texts immediately on the text machine, all of which said wheels down in Georgetown. You people are crazy.
Starting point is 00:44:16 You know what? In honor of Caliperi, you people are crazy is worth say. We'll say that to him one last time. You people are crazy. Core physical therapy. They may need it in Georgetown to get those reporters as they try to run there. Go to court.com. That's KORT.com.
Starting point is 00:44:35 Court physical therapy. You don't need a doctor's referral. Check it out. There's 70 locations around the state. It's court. com. We got trivia here tonight. We got the wings, all that.
