Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.

Last night, a blown call changed a game.

That's where SportsSlice comes in.

A rep.
My mama want you to wave at her.
What?
Where's she at?

859 280 2287 one person writes matt i feel like we are in big trouble we're not going to get any of our top
guys and then we're going to fall apart.
Well, I mean, I'm sorry, I disagree with you on that.
I mean, first of all, we may not get any of our top three guys.
That's always been a possibility.
It's more of a possibility today than it was an hour ago because I think Drew was the one
people felt the most confident about.
But, you know, I will be honest with you.
I don't sort of understand why we freak out about the future as much as we do.
Can I make a statement for rationality and peace?
Please.
Please do.
This, Mario, this would be a good one for you to turn into a video.
My statement of rationality and peace for the Big Blue Nation.
We have never, in the history of our school, hired a slam dunk coach.
Okay.
We've never hired a coach that had won a national championship.
And we've only hired one coach that had ever been to two final fours.
Oftentimes, your...
You're taking a risk even at Kentucky.
But the thing is Kentucky elevates the coach, okay?
Go look at the guys who've had success before they took their first job.
Okay?
What success had Danny Hurley had before Yukon?
Is it Seton Hall?
Very little.
Very little, okay, before he got to Seton Hall.
Let's go look.
What kind of success did Hubert Davis had before he took Carolina to the final?
Final four? None.
What kind of success did John Shire have before he took the Duke job?
None.
Bill Self had had some success at Illinois.
That was a pretty confident hire.
But, you know, what kind of success did Matt Painter have before Purdue?
None.
Like, if you hire the right guy and you put them with the right resources at Kentucky, they can win.
So while if we get to the second tier of coaches, I will be disappointed, pick any coach in the country.
they will do better at Kentucky than they did at their previous job
as long as they're not an alcoholic.
That's what history teaches.
Right?
That's what history teaches.
They will do better here than they did anywhere else.
Rick Patino was a better coach at Kentucky than he was anywhere else.
John Caliperi was a better coach at Kentucky than he was anywhere else.
That's Tubby Smith was a better coach at Kentucky than he was anywhere else.
Kentucky helps make the job.
I do not believe anyone can succeed at Kentucky,
but I think a lot more people can succeed at Kentucky
than they can at any other school in the country,
except a couple, right?
So I just don't think the panic,
especially it's been 48 hours.
The panic is not necessary.
There are guys on that second-tier list.
It's a little bit of a bigger gamble,
but there are guys on that second-tier list who could come here and do really well.
Who are really good coaches.
Yes.
And you give them these resources?
Let's see what happens.
May elevate their game even more, absolutely.
Let me just use Chris Beard as an example.
Now, there's other issues with Chris Beard.
But Chris Beard went to the national championship game at Texas Tech.
If you went to a national championship name at Texas Tech, you don't think, Drew, you can go the national championship game at Kentucky?
I hope so.
I would hope so.
Who was the coach at San Diego State last year?
year.
Can't remember his name.
Did he go to the national championship?
He did.
I bet he could go at Kentucky if he went at San Diego State.
So there's a lot of different ways to have success.
I still want it to be either Danny Hurley or Billy Donovan, but these other dudes
have a shot to be good, too, if we get to that point.
We're going to have to do this soon anyway.
I mean, John Caliperi is 65 years old.
This was coming whether next year, the year after that, it wasn't that far away.
At some point, we were going to have to hit the reset.
He's not a robot or a machine.
We're going to have to get a new coach soon regardless.
We were going to lose a recruiting class eventually.
And by the way, this isn't a bad one to lose.
And I'm confident that with the NIO support they'll get,
whoever the new hire will be, as long as it's not our 30th choice,
I'm going to be excited about.
I'm very close to getting to the when you write me and say you,
meaning Matt Jones ran off Cal, the blocking you and you are now out of my life face.
Because first of all, that's unbelievably stupid.
But secondly, I do think you need to remember what Drew just said.
That man was not going to coach forever.
Okay.
And objectively, let's be objective.
Next year's team was going to be on paper not as good as this year's team.
We have a great recruiting class coming in.
But how many of those guys are certain NBA players after a year?
None of them are certain.
None of them.
None of them.
Jane Quaintes, maybe when you get some age on them.
In the early 2025 draft, are any of them projected in the first round?
Not sure.
I don't remember seeing many.
I'm not sure.
So I'm not saying they couldn't have been successful, but here's one of the things we've learned about Cal.
Freshmen work with him, but they better be really good, right?
I bet one of those guys would have been that, but we don't know that.
you know, I thought there needed to be a separation when this team didn't get it done.
And we were going to come into next year with the team that if we're fair,
probably wasn't going to be as good as this year's team.
Am I wrong?
No.
So, you know, so I'm more confident about the future than almost,
than it seems like some of our fans are, regardless of who we get.
But I do think we need to get somebody good.
Who's up next?
Bob.
Bob, go ahead, Bob.
Good morning, KSR.
Hey.
I'd like to say thanks to Cal for showing us the different side of basketball.
But I had to talk with Edgar last night, and he gave me the lowdown on this thing.
So, Bob, you're saying you have the scoop.
Edgar gave me the scoop.
Who's Edgar?
Casey.
Who's that?
The prophet, sleeping profit.
Okay.
It sounds like a fact.
What did he say?
He said, is that statement Cal made about resigning and needs a new voice?
He didn't say he wasn't doing the job.
But if you look at Cal's ego, it's been bruised and stepped on.
His legacy is sinking faster than the Titanic.
He's got more money than he can give away.
So I think Mitch had Cal kind of under his foot because he could hold him in that job where money didn't mean anything.
Yeah.
But when again.
Well, Cal's gone, though, Bob.
I mean, honestly, debating Cal is kind of in some ways a waste of time now because he's gone.
So now we got to figure out what's next.
So, I mean, I do think there will be time.
And it's good to hear from you.
I appreciate the call to talk about like what the Shams and Kyle Tucker article was.
And to talk about some of that, that's probably good offseason five.
but he's gone.
And so that's not changing.
And crying over spilled milk will not help ride this program move forward.
You know, I feel like we're, I think we were all kind of expecting maybe something
happened today, but now I feel like we're going to be in a waiting pattern,
waiting on Hurley and Donovan now.
I mean, now we're looking in probably next week before we get some more movement.
It's just me and you talking, Drew, do you promise not to tell anybody?
I don't tell anyone anything.
This is all.
Steel trap.
This is all Danny Hurley Day.
Danny Hurley day.
All chips will go towards Danny Hurley
today, tomorrow, Saturday, however long it takes,
and they will make him say no.
All right?
That's where we are.
They will make him say no.
He probably will say no, but they will make him say no.
And everybody that said he wasn't considering it,
all of you are wrong.
Okay, they will make him say no.
I think he probably will.
But I can tell you, name Thursday is everything we got, Danny Hurley.
That's what this is.
And maybe Friday and maybe Saturday, I don't know.
But that's where this is now.
Are those numbers accurate?
I think they will offer him between $11 and $12 million a year.
My goodness.
How we got that?
They will make Danny Hurley, if he were to take it, they will make him the highest paid coach in college athletics.
Wow.
And that includes football.
So if he says no to that, then you just shake your hand and go, well, I mean, like, we did all we could do, right?
Like, there's nothing else you could do at that point.
But they will, you're out of here, my man?
You're not going to try to beat us up, are you?
Okay, good.
You've got to pick up his grandma at the hospital.
God bless your grandma.
They'll make Danny Hurley say no.
That'd be a hard one to turn down, 11.5 million.
And I think they were going to, they were ready to do this anyway, but they felt like they had a better shot with Drew.
Yeah.
And so you wanted to see what he did.
But now it's all in on Danny Hurley.
I don't think you'd get in a, if it's a yes, if it's a yes, I don't think it happens today because they got that parade Saturday.
Yes, right.
But, you know, this is one of those days where no news is good news, right?
Every minute that goes by where it's not a no, you feel better.
Does that make sense?
Yeah.
You took my point.
Hurley, if he's a no, he's going to want that no out there so fast so
Yukon fans can enjoy what's ahead and not be sweating him.
But if it's a yes, he's going to need everyone to be as quiet as possible so he can still
enjoy that Yukon and then announce it after the fact.
And we all know Mitch operates in the quiet anyway.
This isn't some college recruitment where there's whispers going around.
I mean, Mitch keeps a very tight circle and Hurley has to protect what he still has going on
at Yukon, whatever they decide.
Yeah.
859-28.
2287. Who's up next? Mike.
Mike, go ahead, Mike. Mike.
All right. No mic. No, Mike. Let's try Jay. Jay. What's up, Jay?
Hey, first of all, I do a good job to keep everybody entertained.
As far as Scott Drew goes, I kind of figured he wasn't going to come here because
they just finished building the house, and I figured they might be good friends with Chip and
Joanna, and they might have the inside scoop.
So I think you all will still get Billy or Hurley, though.
I hope so.
That would be awesome.
I mean, that would be the one that makes everybody go nuts.
We'll see if it ends up happening.
Let me ask you a question.
I appreciate the call.
At what moment, I didn't entertain this talk because I thought it was a waste of time.
But let's say Hurley and Donovan both say no.
Do you call Rick Patino?
he is getting a lot of support in this town.
People want him to at least be in the conversation.
Could you really do that, though?
You can do it for two or three years?
We don't want something for two or three years.
You've got to do this again.
I'd like to have somebody just come in and just win.
So let me ask you.
So you're of an age where you would want to do that, right?
I don't think he's on my first tier, but I think he should be on their second tier.
So let me say, let's put it a different way.
Hurley and Donovan say no.
Now your list is Chris Beard, Sean Miller, let's throw Bruce Pearl in there, let's put Rick Petino, let's put Shaka Smart.
You're on that tier of guys.
Tommy Lloyd, you're on that tier of guys.
Are you really, Drew, not going to consider Rick Patino?
Absolutely not.
I mean, the nostalgia would be fun.
The man's 71 years old.
We need a coach that is going to build something that will last.
I can't say that.
I can't say it's, you talk about something I can't believe I'm saying.
I ain't going to say
Never
I mean maybe if he's the 50th person on the list
He's not in my top 49
At one point
Let me finish my thought
At one point
If you're the gold standard
You cannot get on all four
And crawl to Rick Patino
Okay well let's talk about
Well it's not all four
He'd be the one crawling here
He wants to come here
But let's say
Let me give you choices between two guys
You tell me which one you would take
Chris Beard Rick Patino
I'm going to be
Most of the other options
than Rick Petino.
I think it's a silly.
But let's do them.
Chris Beard.
Chris Beard.
Rick Petino.
I'm going Chris Beard.
Sean Miller, Rick Petino.
I hate Sean Miller.
No, Shannon, you do you do, you do.
Chris Beard or Rick Petino.
Rick Petito.
All right.
I do not want Sean Miller whatsoever.
I take him before Patino.
All right.
Rick Petino.
I'm taking Patino over Sean Miller.
Patino as well.
Shock of smart, Sean Miller.
Don't want him either.
Or, excuse me, shock of Rick Petino.
Shock over Rick.
Rick Patino.
I'm taking Rick over Shaka.
What about you?
I think I am too, man.
I don't know if it's the nostalgia.
All right.
Bruce Pearl, Rick Petino.
Bruce Pearl's high on my list.
Yeah.
I'm taking Bruce Pearl.
I would take Bruce Pearl.
What about you?
I am definitely taking Bruce Pearl.
Shannon, you're taking Bruce Pearl as well.
Tommy Lloyd, Rick Petino.
Rick Petino.
I might take Tommy Lloyd in that one.
Actually, even though I don't think he's great, I think there's a lot of potential there.
How is Patino and Sir your list?
Mark Pope.
Mark Pope.
You're taking Mark Pope over.
Rick Petino is 71 years old.
coach. He's still a great, great coach.
You're taking Mark Pope over Rick Petito.
Do you all not remember him leaving us going to Louisville and do things you cannot do before the sun goes down?
And we're going to ask him to come back and operate here on the gold standard.
He left Camelot.
He doesn't get to come back.
Wow.
And Drew hit it.
I think that's why Mitch Barnhart will not consider him for what happened.
I don't think you're considering me either.
He left us.
And he's 71 years old.
It would be funny.
It would be funny.
We would again...
This is basketball.
This isn't a joke.
We can go home and watch funny things.
Is there an amount of money that you could buy a ticket for Rick Petito versus John Calaparian Ruperina next year?
Oh, my goodness.
It would be insane.
Man, it's like something out of a movie.
That would be literally like you want to talk about a television event that would go...
Did you all take Ambien?
This is Kentucky basketball, not a comedy or a television event.
We are trying to win championships.
I love it, Drew.
This is great.
This is sad behavior.
No, Patino wins a title and retires.
Never mind what I said earlier, Mario, that's the video clip is us doing Rick
Patino versus those guys.
You all are making a mockery of the best program in college basketball.
It's so upset.
This is sad.
This is sad.
Frank Franklin is back.
He's 71.
I don't want anyone at 71.
They're going to retire in two years.
We're going to do it again.
Frank Franklin.
He should be at McDonald's at 5 in the morning drinking coffee, saving the world's
problem.
We can't play this clip for Rick Bettino when he's going to do it.
Dude, what are you going to do if he comes?
Laugh?
You're not to be allowed at his press conference.
That's true.
We're going to have to ban you from KSR.
We'll take a break right back as Kentucky Sports Radio.
Known you a long time, Drew Franklin.
Never seen you this worked up.
I've never seen you all this crazy.
I'm just trying to get this show back.
All right.
So let me, let me give you a couple other hypotheticals because the text machine,
this is like the amount of text I'm seeing on the text machine rivals when I ask for a poll.
I'm being real.
Like, they just keep coming on.
And most people are not on Drew's side, but Drew has a lot on his side, too.
Probably 60-40.
But let me ask you this.
What if I told you this?
What if I told you if Rick came, you got another year of Reed Shepard?
Because he coached his dad.
No.
Still no.
No.
And I don't like dangling Reed and putting all that person.
I'm just asking you a question.
This is just hyper.
I'm just asking you a question.
No.
I cannot be any more clear how stupid I think it would be.
to go back to our ex that left us and gave us the middle finger and ruffer.
Is there any coach in America that you would take Rick Patino over?
I said if we get to like 50 on my list, I'll hear it out.
But I think it's crazy you would want to go back to.
Lamont Paris, Rick Petito.
Oh, I love Lamont Paris.
Shout out Finley, Ohio.
I love it.
This is why this will be an interesting process.
Yep.
But let me be clear.
Today is make Danny.
Hurley say no day that's what today is i expect he will but they're going to make you
danny hurley's agent just felt better than he's ever felt in his life when the way with the scott
drudan he's got a lot more leverage and by the way i think then the next step is we all root
who do the bill who do the bulls play in the play in game nicks is it the nicks no they're already
in the playoffs is it like the hawks we wear tray young jersey
and we cheer as loud as we can.
Is the game in Chicago?
Maybe we go in Hawks Gear.
Or we can go back to Atlanta.
We can make it to Atlanta.
No.
If it's in Chicago, if it's in Atlanta, we're going.
If we don't have a coach, you and I are going to that playing game and rooting for the Atlanta Hawks.
All right.
If we don't have, if we, I'm serious, we don't have a coach and Billy is still in play,
we're going in Hawks gear to wherever that game is.
And they'll wear it to the post-game news conference afterwards.
No, no.
Then we flip and say, hey, Billy.
That's what you do.
Who's next?
Let's go to Josh.
Josh.
Go ahead, Josh.
Hey, what's up, guys?
I just don't see how, I just wasn't a Drew fan.
I'm glad he'd have.
Drew Franklin or Scott, do we call him Scott, please?
No, God, Drew.
I'm from Madisonville.
Oh, I love Drew Franklin.
Okay, got you too.
One of the free Matt Jones songs from the Barbershop.
Oh, well, thank you very much.
sir. Yes, sir. Anyway, if we don't, I mean, if just say that Hurley passes and Donovan passes,
like, how is Bruce Pearl not on that second tier? I mean, I'm not saying he's not. I don't think
Mitch is a huge fan of his, but I'm not saying he's not on that list. As I told you, I haven't
had lots of conversations about the second list because I think the university has been totally
focused on those three names that I mentioned. But yes, I do think for me, Bruce Pearl would be
on that other list. I'm not saying he is or he isn't, but he would be for me.
Right. Yeah, me too, guys. I appreciate your time.
Appreciate it. 859-280-2287.
I think we need to just keep poking Drew a little bit more about Rick Petino.
He's gotten all worked up. I want him to be. I'm good. I just need you all to be normal.
Who's up next? Kentucky Joe. Kentucky Joe. How are you?
pretty good it's been two weeks and a lot of it's happened well yes it is uh i guess the first
thing i am a big blue fan the morning uh well all right um i'm glad what do you got joe but i'm
gonna get serious so yeah yeah probably had bruce pierre i like to have him because the guy
probably he can recruit he can recruit and uh the thing things we're going to
to deal with the NIL money.
And the time, we need to get somebody with it a week or two, right?
Yes, we, yeah, no, we definitely need.
The NIL part is a different issue.
I do not believe NIL is going to be a problem.
If it's like, you know, whoever the coach is.
I think, like you.
Cal last night said he's a players coach.
I think Bruce Per would be it.
He's definitely a players coach.
Right.
Well, I don't know what that means.
I mean, yes, I know what it means for Cal, but that's a Cal phrase.
That's a cow phrase.
The question is whether or not he would.
Yeah, that's just a phrasing.
I think the question is, can you coach modern athletes,
and I don't see any reason any of the coaches on this list cannot.
Right.
All right.
So I appreciate it, Joe.
Thank you very much.
Bruce Pearl's proven he can coach.
And he can read, he's had success at Tennessee until he got in trouble and had success at Auburn.
What if, okay, so again, we're talking, we're, I don't want to say dreaming, but we're talking big here, right?
So what do we do if we get Danny Hurley?
Talk all the trash in the world.
I mean, he'll talk right along with us.
You know, he said Yukon fans are obnoxious as blank in an interview a few weeks ago.
I hope he'll say that about us even more.
Yeah.
He would be perfect.
He's the only part, you know, I said a minute ago, like you never know.
for sure, you know for sure
with him. I mean, you know, you know
it's going to work with him. He's got the pizzazz
and the flash to make him
be able to sit in that chair and do everything else that goes
along with being the UK basketball.
So let's do this because he got so
front. Let's rank your list in
terms of who's
likely in your
personal list. I'll go first. I'll say
well, okay, we'll do that after break. We only
have 30 seconds left. So let's take a break.
859-28027. We are here
at KS. Barr. For those of you that haven't heard,
Scott Drew removed his name from interest today.
Kentucky, I still did not offer him, but he did remove his name from interest.
And I, this is the Matt Jones part, I think it is Danny Hurley Day in the bluegrass world.
Make them say no.
We'll take a break and be right back.
This Kentucky Sports Radio.
T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney.
Call T.J. He'll make them pay.
Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Here's Matt Jones.
Are you playing this, Shannon?
it's the sound of silence like we haven't gotten an answer. You're not playing this like it's negative.
No, no. The sound is not, I'm not negative at all yet. And if we called it Rick Petino, he would be our old friend.
That's true. It's a great way to support Kentucky athletics is drinking Kentucky rain water, R-E-I-N. I drank some of it last night. I realized I had 24 of them in the backseat of my car, and I took them inside and I had nice water. Kentucky Rain. R-E-I-N-D-com. They have it at Kentucky-branded.
They have it in Maysville, Flemingsburg.
You can learn more at Kentucky Rain, R-E-I-N.com,
artesian water that you directly supports the B-B-N programs at KentuckyRain.com.
One person writes, Matt, do you worry that we scared Scott Drew off by all the antics yesterday?
Well, I don't know if we did or not, but if we did, then this wasn't the place for him anyway.
I mean, I'm just being, that's my view of it.
Like you don't, we never want to be people who harass or who are mean, but we are crazy in a good way.
And if you can't handle us being crazy in a good way, then you shouldn't coach here.
That's just, that's just the reality.
You know what I mean?
It's like why when I was visiting law schools, there was, when you went to UVA, they like took you to their parties.
And I remember thinking not everybody would like this, but I think,
Part of it was they wanted, like, this is what UVA is.
Are you cool with it?
Like, is this where you want to be?
Is this what you want to do?
You know, you got to decide.
Like, is this for you?
You know, when you're a lawyer, one of the things you do, at least at the very best law firms in the country,
they throw you in and make you work your ass off for two years.
And it weeds people out.
But from the law firm's perspective, they're like, well, if you can't do this, then we don't want you here.
And that's why it was good that the wife came to Lexington, toured the city, got a feel of
what we were all about.
Coach Drew got a feeling what we were all about by eating Mexican restaurant yesterday.
Watch his family feud.
Watched family feud.
I mean, apparently a bait.
So first of all, on the KSR Plus site, there's constant information coming.
The good thing about it is there are Baylor people riding as well.
And apparently, Drew's family just did not want to move from Waco.
Like they want to be in Waco.
They're, uh, that he's got a big family.
And they are all around there.
And so they didn't want to all uproose.
And that's completely understandable.
Completely understandable.
We're moving on and hoping one of the big fish still bite.
Yeah.
859-9-2807.
One person on the text machine says,
Shannon's going to laugh at this, I guarantee.
All right, Shannon, let's see.
Had we hired Scott Drew, we would have the worst men's football and basketball coach
hairlines in America.
I don't know if it would be the worst.
I mean, there's definitely been worse than Scott Drew's.
Danny Hurley's isn't great.
Yeah.
Well, but Danny Hurley's, he's gone, right?
He made a business decision.
Scott Drew is undefeated in Rupp Arena.
People forget that he came down here and beat us.
And Drew and I were at the game down there and watched him beat us in a game that started about midnight.
That's right.
Who's up next?
Let's go to Zach.
Zach, what's up, Zach?
Hey, Matt.
Can you guys hear me?
Yes.
Yeah, thanks for taking the call.
A long-time listener, first-time caller.
Kentucky native, now living in Virginia.
I feel like a lot of folks are the last few days have been trying to keep track of everything,
checking up while I'm at work, checking up when I get home.
Just saw a bit ago about Scott Drew putting his name out of the running.
So I'll just say I've been a Donovan supporter for a long time.
Back in 2009, I wanted Donovan to come.
I remember back in the Tubby Gillespie days when I was an undergrad at Kentucky,
being in the eruption zone and watching just Donovan come and turn our pockets inside out every time.
And so I'm just kind of curious listening to you guys talking about everything,
the guys that are still in play.
What do you think really needs to happen?
What kind of scenario needs to come about that brings Donovan here?
You know, I think maybe the third time could be the charm.
I think, first of all, he needs to finish the season.
I mean, he's got to finish his NBA season.
I know one person that is very close to Billy Donovan from years, years ago,
who tells me that there is no doubt in their mind, Billy will be very interested,
but that there's nothing he can do until the NBA season is over.
And I think for Kentucky, again, Kentucky's view was I got three candidates.
I think Nate Oates, by the way, would have been a fourth candidate if he was interested.
they said we want one of these four,
and if we cannot engage with Billy until the end,
we're going to go after the others first.
So that's why I think they're all in on Danny Hurley.
But I will say this.
If they get to, I think if Danny Hurley gives a no,
what I think they then do is engage with the second tier guys,
but I would be shocked if they hired a coach
without making Billy say no.
I mean, football, we did wait for Liam Cohen to finish with the playoffs before.
It's a little different now.
We don't have a roster.
True, we don't have a roster.
But to be fair, like John Calpary doesn't have a roster either.
Like, there's a lot of people that don't have a roster.
You're getting to the roster building right now.
Yeah, this is, the good thing is there ain't never been an easier time to build a roster right now.
One thing about Billy, if he were to be interested if Hurley's and know, what about a staff?
Like a Scott Padgett?
John Pelfrey might get some Kentucky connections.
Yeah.
On the staff?
Like the staff he would bring, we talk about wanting to keep Reed
or someone said earlier this week having a mashburn on the team.
What if Billy Donovan went out and got some names we love to help him out?
Billy Donovan is a connection to the past.
Yes.
Did Jeff, did Jeff play with Billy at all?
Billy was probably gone when Jeff.
He could be close, buddy.
He may have been there one year.
It might have been a year crossover.
Yeah.
Let's see.
Jeff was here for five years.
Billy left in 94.
So, yeah.
Jeff 93, 94 was this year?
Jeff got here.
played a night he set out a year so jeff was 93 got here and so jeff would have one year yeah he
would have had one year but through recruiting i'm sure they know each other well because billy would
have been on there uh who's next phil phil go ahead phil okay let's try derrick
derrick go ahead Derek hey mag just uh wanted to say a couple things uh yeah that scott drew when it's
things um and i'm all in on donovan and hurley kind of like everybody else my fear is that tier two is
really scary to me. Do you think they go back to Alabama and say we're willing to pay the
buyout as some people have. Okay, well, let me, let me, let's talk. I want to just, I don't mean to be like
the Kentucky sports motivational speaker, but here's a fact in their last four seasons
coaching basketball, okay, coaching basketball, I would venture to say everyone we have on tier two
has won more NCAA tournament games in the last four years coaching basketball than John Calipery did.
That's accurate.
There's a lot of those.
But that's why I don't understand this idea, this idea that the world is falling down.
You know?
I'm not saying it's falling down.
I would much rather prefer buying out oats.
Is that something that you think they would entertain?
I do, but I think the oats issue, I think the buyout is part.
of it, but I don't think it's the only thing there.
I think there are some oats.
You know, I don't want to get into it.
I just think there are some personal things that maybe keep oats from being able to move right now.
But so like, you know, I don't think that's my place to get into, to me, honest with him.
No, that's fair.
Like I said, I was just curious if you thought they'd go back to Alabama with a different thing.
Yeah, well, no, I mean, they might call him again.
I don't know.
I appreciate the call.
Here's what I know.
I know who was on their top list.
And I know who the coaches were, and I know who they contacted.
And Nate Oates was one of them.
The only one is I told you won it.
There was one to two NBA guys.
I think one was Frank Vogel, and then there's one that I've just never been able to figure out who it was.
But, you know, I think they looked at this and said,
we're going to do everything in our power to get one of these people.
probably half of them have now been scratched off
and now you keep going with the rest of them.
If the numbers are correct, you're talking about Danny Hurley,
I mean, they're proving that they're going to do whatever they can
to get one of these top tier guys.
If Danny Hurley turns Kentucky down,
he will be turning down the biggest offer
in the history of college athletes.
No, I mean, Jimbo Fishers might have been for more total money
because it would have been more years.
Yeah.
But in terms of an annual salary, he will be turning down the most money any coaches turned down.
And if he does that, Drew, what else are you supposed to do, you know?
Yeah, it's another one.
You look at him and are like, well, you really are a crazy person, but thank you for meeting with us on to Billy.
Yeah.
I still feel pretty good about Tier 1, not a specific name, but the money they're throwing at Hurley
and just I don't think Donovan's a no.
I feel good.
I shouldn't say feel real good because I'm completely guessing here.
But in my brain, I'm still confident where we are in Tier 1.
The other thing is, look, I have been over the years very critical of Mitch Barnhart,
but I don't know how you can get mad at Mitch Barnhart.
If Scott Drew, if you take what he said at face value, and I know Myron Metcalf,
I trust Myron as much as I trust you guys,
Myron knows him.
And Myron said, if Scott Drew said I'm going home to pray about it,
he's going home to pray about it, and he will do what he thinks God wants him to do.
If you accept that, if Scott Drew feels God wants to keep him in Waco,
how is that Mitch Barnhart's fault?
It's not.
That's not.
Like, you can't blame Mitch Barnhart for that.
The man's family doesn't want to move.
If a man's family and his God does not want him to leave, what is Mitch Barnhart going to do?
You know?
Same with Hurley.
If you throw 11 to 12 million out of me, I don't want to move, you're like, well, I don't have any more of those millions.
When you call Jay Wright,
And Jay Wright says, you know what?
I'm doing nothing, and I prefer nothing over something.
What are you going to do?
So at least they can walk away.
He can walk away with his head held high.
I don't look.
I gave it my best effort with everybody.
And I like that he's doing that.
Yeah.
You know, the Kentucky State Chamber's inaugural professional summit,
we're just now a little under two weeks away.
I'm so excited about this.
You can still get signed up.

He's the director of the Louisville Orchestra.
Shannon, you've been to the Louisville Airport.
There's that picture of him as you're walking with his hands up.
Have you ever seen that?
I have, yeah.
He was also a part of the OVW manager.
He also hit a guy on the head with a trombone at OVW.
That's right.
So he'll be at the Kentucky Young Professional Summer.
It's K.Ychamber.com slash events.

Final segment.
It's KSR.
Welcome back.
It is Kentucky Sports Radio.
859-28027.
I don't know.
I don't know how well our fan base is equipped,
Drew, for coaching searches in the social media era.
It's constant.
Constant.
On our message board, there's like three in the morning.
people are commenting and asking for updates it's 24-7 right now the other people i i really am
baffled by the people who say you know what an what an embarrassment for kentucky remember how much it
was supposed to be a are you an arkansas fan no he's not you're just wearing it's a troll
huh but i mean are you going to cheer for arkansas over kentucky okay well listen i'm not going to cheer for
saw because they're our rival.
But I wish him personal happiness.
But I do think like, I do think like being, like, if you choose Cal over Kentucky,
if you were to do that, then you weren't really a Kentucky fan.
I mean, let's be real.
Nope.
You don't choose an individual over the team you've cheered for your entire life.
Whoever that individual is, right?
Like ever.
You know, you can still wish the best.
for him and I actually think it's okay to cheer for him in Arkansas
but if you cheer for him over Kentucky then you weren't a Kentucky fan
you just weren't when tubby left I wanted tubby to win all the time
but he wasn't playing in our conference now that cows in our conference I think that
makes it you were good friends with tubby but if Minnesota played Kentucky
who were you going to cheer for Kentucky yeah that's all I'm saying I mean I
to me that's like obvious oh yeah the the the the the the the
program is more important than any individual.
Oh, yeah.
I mean, I just shouted about not wanting Rick Petino.
But if we get to 98th option, and he's on the sideline, I'm a Kentucky fan first.
I want them to win every game.
Yeah.
And, well, I think most people do agree with that.
Who's up next?
Albert.
Albert.
Go ahead, Albert.
Yes, I just got a couple things to say.
How many years you think Ms. Barnhart will be around?
Not a lot.
one or two maybe
this is what I think
and this is just my
I don't think it'll even be that long
this was my speculation
I think part of the reason
he didn't want to fire Cal
is he wanted to go out
and let the next
AD hired their basketball coach
I think that's what he wanted
and then I think
Cal decided to talk to Arkansas
and it went away and so he has to do it
but I don't
on a personal level
I don't think Barnhart's here all that much longer,
just because I think he's going to retire and go do something else.
Okay, well, that's what it kind of led into something that Drew doesn't like.
That's why I think for me, Patino's probably your perfect fit
because if he stays two or three years longer,
then they leave the program like Barnhart said the other day with Caliperi.
Of course, Caliperi lied, but they could leave it in good shape.
Yeah, I think.
I appreciate the call.
I want to say something about Cal leaving, too.
I don't wish him ill will.
But, you know, this is a guy who spent his entire career telling players,
we can't hide you, there's no crying on the yacht, this is Kentucky, it's the gold standard,
it's different.
There are expectations.
He got frustrated that that same thing was then applied to him.
The same thing he asked of his players was then applied to him.
Now, if he had stayed here, this fan base would have been cheering for him every game.
But he made the decision to leave.
He also violated his contract.
No one pushed him out the door.
If they had fired him, that's a different conversation.
But they did not.
Not only did they not fire him, the AD set next to him and gave him a public affirmation of support.
I don't feel sorry for Cal.
He made that decision.
He did not get pushed out the door.
This was a guy who if you weren't good enough to play here, he would sit you on the bench.
Well, his production in the last four years was not Kentucky level.
I'm just, I mean, that's just the reality.
He's a great man, but that we can't.
He chose to talk to Arkansas.
And if you believe the reports, let's not skip over the report that he tried to reach out to Ohio State in February during the season.
Don't skip over that.
When you, like, we were going for a title.
We were built for March.
We were built for March.
And he talked to Ohio State.
He was looking to walk out the door.
So, I don't feel sorry for it.
And I think we have to focus on the future.
Am I wrong?
You're not wrong at all.
He said in his press, he said in an interview yesterday,
he wished he had gone to UCLA in 2019.
That hurt.
Like, let's stop.
Let's stop acting like we, that any,
of you or me or anyone, do anything wrong?
That man said in an interview yesterday, I wish I'd gone to UCLA in 2019.
And look what they've done since 2019.
So I think it makes us look a lot more pathetic to sit here and act like we're whining
over somebody who said, I wish I had left five years ago.
Yeah.
Yeah, that one stung.
He has a right to feel that way, and I'll be honest with you.
He is correct.
It would have been better for him and us.
But you know what?
If that's how he thinks, how am I going to feel sorry?
for him if he is going to publicly say he wished he left.
It leads me to believe maybe he's been looking to leave every year just to see what
would come open.
Kentucky fans have self-confidence, okay?
Like we're going to be fine.
We've won five titles with five different people.
We will be fine.
Also, I'll add, because since he said it last night, he went into a hotel room to meet with
Arkansas a mere days after the Mitch Barnhart meeting.
And he says that was random.
maybe it was, but that was just days after you sat down with Barnhart and had this promise of the future,
and then you're in a hotel room in Phoenix making your next move.
The report that he was interested in Ohio State in February, I just don't know how you go,
well, we ran him off.
We still had a chance to win a title.
We're still fired up.
We were still excited.
We were still selling out games and being into it.
So that's just my take.

What day do you think we have a coach?
I think now we're looking probably a week from today
or a week from tomorrow.
Yeah, I think it's not going to be today or tomorrow.
No, probably.
Going on to the next week.
I'm watching that playing game now.
Definitely going the next week.
Yeah.
Make them say no, Danny.
Or no.
Danny don't say no.
Yeah, make them say yes.
Bye, bye.
