Now here's Matt Jones.
Welcome, everyone, Kentucky Sports Radio.
Thursday, April the 18th.
I am Matt Jones here at the KS Bar and Grill.
It is Thursday, right?
It is Thursday.
I'm having a hard time with days.
I'm not going to lie to you.
I was outside.
Jerry Tipton was here earlier giving me his book.
which I'm going to read.
That's going to be my weekend reading.
And he was saying to me, we were trying to figure out when he was going to come on.
And I was like, how about Wednesday, May 1st?
And he goes, that's next week.
And I said, I think it's two weeks.
And then we go, is it three weeks?
Like, everything has kind of come through, and I can't remember what day anything is.
But it is Thursday.
Taylor Swift trivia tonight.
I've been working on the questions.
It's very hard to help write questions that you know nothing.
about because I know nothing about it.
All three of us are going to be here for it.
I have a lot of people helping me.
I believe we are either totally booked or close.
Usually what happens is some people won't show up.
So if you can still walk up and get on the waiting list, you'll probably get in.
But this will be a packed house.
And then I guess, what is it?
Dead Poets Society is tonight?
Is that in the Poets Department, something like that?
Tortured Poets.
Did you know that?
Then it comes out at midnight tonight?
Midnight tonight.
Tortured Poets Department.
So everybody leave KS. Bar and go stand in line?
Is that what everybody does?
You still stand in line?
No.
Why would you stand in line for?
It's just going to come out on your phone.
It just pops up.
Yeah, it's not there.
You don't have to go to CD Central down there on campus anymore.
What was the place?
This jockey.
Everybody would go to staying in line.
Well, the one on campus.
What was the one on campus?
The one on campus was the big release one when I was in college.
CD Central?
I think it was CD Central.
And when I was at Trancy, stuff would come out on either Tuesday or Thursday.
I'm not sure.
I was telling somebody this the other day.
a younger person and they were like, that sounds awesome.
So I think it was every Tuesday.
It was either Tuesday or Thursday.
And people would line up down the street for the new ones.
And like, I had a buddy who just went every week and would buy something because it was like a party.
You would hang, see other people who liked whatever musical group you liked.
And I remember I had a buddy who would come home every, again, whether it was Tuesday or Thursday,
He would like a stack of five CDs just because he went down there and bought whatever was new.
There's something about that community.
It's fun.
It's high-spirited and you are excited.
These kids will never know it.
They'll never know it.
They just hit the button and then dead poet society comes up and they're ready.
They're so spoiled with all this just instant at their fingertips.
They don't know what it's like to just sit by the radio hoping the song you want to hear it comes on.
That's exactly right.
After school, turning on TRL and just hoping what your music video comes on.
Again, we sound old.
I don't care.
Knoxville Radio State.
would come on, they'd have the top nine at nine, and I would put in a cassette, and I would hit record, and I would record the top nine and hope that one of those songs was one I would like. Have your own mixtape. And then I would have my top nine at nine. So don't, yeah, Mario, shut up. I don't care that you have everything now. I'm, thank you. 859, 280, 27. All right, so every day there continues to be a ton of news. So I'm going to go over the two or three things that I think are the most important. You tell me what you think. First of all,
We have our first official staff member.
How do you pronounce his name?
I don't know.
He is from BYU.
He coached with, he's coached with Mark Pope for both at Utah Valley and at BYU.
It's not a surprise he joined it, but it finally became official.
Well, UK's not going to be able to announce anything until next week.
But finally, I was able to get people to confirm it.
Cody Fueger.
is his name. He is supposedly an offensive mastermind. He's part of the person. He's the person who
along Pope came up with his offense, et cetera. And this, the quote is, this was from another coach in his
league. He is an absolute savant when it comes to offensive basketball. So again, I don't know him,
but that sounds good, right? Sounds awesome. Just that word offensive mastermind makes you excited to
have him on the first step? Do you know what a savant is?
someone like can I see the future?
No.
That's not what a Savant.
Oh, he's a fortune teller.
That's a fortune teller.
That's a Savant is somebody who's like unbelievably intelligent at something.
It almost, it's like a miracle at how smart they are.
It's not really see the future.
That's a psychic.
Okay.
But he is an offensive savant or Drew.
Maybe I should have started with you.
Maybe he is an offensive palmeritor.
Who knows?
That'll be good.
I looked up the website.
They do pronunciation guides.
And it says Figer.
Feeger.
I haven't heard it, but in reading it, they type out how to say it.
So we'll roll with that.
I just love that Pope knew right away that guy was coming with him.
And if Pope wanted him and that's what he needs to keep that offense going the way around it at BYU, then I'm glad he's part of the team.
Shannon, are you happy about Cody Figer?
Yeah, from everything that I've read so far and what you guys are talking about, it sounds like he's going to be a good addition to the team.
And probably going to give you the analytics that you didn't have with the prior staff.
Totally agree.
So here's some time frame stuff that, like,
We kind of thought, but we now know more specifically.
In Kentucky, we have a state law that a job has to be posted for seven days.
They posted like three of the jobs when the day Cal left.
So today is the last day of their posting.
So in theory, they could announce some coaches tomorrow.
And then the other two, for whatever reason, didn't get posted until like Saturday,
so they can't be announced until Sunday.
I'm told it's very unlikely anybody has announced until tomorrow.
next week because even after the folks are finished they have to go through like background checks
and all that kind of stuff so we probably won't hear any official word from uk until next week
figure however was already recruiting for kentucky yesterday and that's where they are right now
i guess legally he can do that right even though he hasn't been officially yeah i don't think he'll
go to jail um i think he's all right honestly right now anyone can do anything you know there are no
rules that's i guess that's true so but there are state law
and that's why it is taking a little longer.
Now, second thing, we had talked about kind of a big name that Kentucky was going after.
I think for about 48 hours, Kentucky had really put a lot of emphasis and attempts at getting
Kenny Payne, former UK assistant and U of L head coach.
I believe yesterday he decided not to do it.
Obviously, that could change, but that's what I heard towards last night.
He is likely to either go to Arkansas.
I'm told the Arkansas, the chicken people maybe said to him,
take whatever they offer and just add to it.
But he also may go to the NBA.
But it's very unlikely now that he goes here.
I thought Kenny would be a, honestly, what I thought Kenny would be good at is keeping
the connection to the Cal players and all that stuff.
I thought that was some positivity.
I'm not sure what his recruiting stuff is now
because the world has shifted in that,
but it looks like he will not Drew be here.
Yeah, I was open to the idea to just poke at Louisville,
make fun of them a little more,
that he was a spy we sent over for a couple years.
Also, I do like that they're considering a connection to the Calipari era,
whether it be him or another option.
I don't think you have to have that,
but I like that they're at least considering it
to keep all the NBA talent there and a little bit of that recruiting going.
But if that's what he chooses,
I'm also good with moving on with a new era and a clean slate without having that connection to the past, too.
Well, speaking of CalPerry era, there's a lot of chatter, and I can confirm this, that Orlando wants to stay,
that Orlando has, he's still here, that he has still been showing up to work in the craft center,
because he's technically still an assistant coach, unlike a lot of the others who resigned.
He hasn't yet.
I don't know what UK is going to do there.
this is complete wist like scuttlebutt not scoop okay but there had been some chatter that
pope was open to having maybe either pain or antigua that maybe not both but either if pain
doesn't do it you could get orlando what would you think about if he decided and i do not know
for certain if they have decided one way or the other on orlando i know he's still working he was
working there as of yesterday.
Would you want Orlando on the staff?
Yeah.
Kenny was obviously kind of the players loved him.
Orlando's kind of the recruiter guy.
So I think if you do get one of those two,
that is a good asset to your new staff.
Orlando already knows the ins and outs of what it is here at Kentucky,
recruit Kentucky in on a lot of players already.
I can see why he would be an asset.
It would be fascinating, though, if he didn't go with Cal to Arkansas and stayed here.
Don't you think that would be surprised?
I mean, add it to the list of things we've said what's going on behind the scenes that so many people don't want to keep going with that operation.
I just love that he's still showing up for work right now.
Like Mark Pope's passing him in the hallway like, hey.
He's taking that George Costanza.
I'm still here.
What are you talking about?
He's in the break room, showing him around how to use the microwave.
I just love that he still showing up for work.
I still work here.
What do you mean?
I love it.
He just built a new house here in Lexington.
So that's maybe that's part of it.
I'm biased.
I love Orlando and Teagle.
Love him.
I think a staff with this with this figure Orlando and then a young recruiter to me that's the staff I go to war with on recruiter you give me Orlando a guy that's comfortable with Pope and then a guy who's young who goes and recruits I'll take it because then he's got that analytic guy I think they're going to bring him like a GM kind of guy I would love it on a personal level I've always I mean Orlando was here when this started I've always been friends with Orlando
Orlando, unfortunately, during the Cal era, I think maybe Orlando was told not to talk to us.
And that made me disappointed, but I could see him tomorrow and you're the same way.
He'll give us a hug.
Well, we have a lot of say to each other.
Drew, I'll let you.
You want to say it's your intro with him.
Well, we both love the show's Succession, as you do.
lots of people love succession and Logan Roy has a line that he says almost all the time it has a bad word in it I can't say on radio
I don't remember how it started but Orlando and I just started saying that to each other in passing no you did they do it all the time at they literally will see each other in passing because you don't really get to talk to him a lot either I don't think I've said full sentences to him but like we'll be walking all the time like at the SEC tournament yeah drew and I will walk by Orlando he'll nod and
and say hi, and then he'll look at Drew and say,
Blank off.
And we're quoting a show, it's fine.
And then Drew will say it back to him, and they do it all the time.
There was a game at Tennessee.
What was the just a few years ago when we stole the one at Tennessee?
Yes, you said it.
I'm in the media room.
It's silent.
Everyone's typing.
It's kind of a stressful work environment.
I was trying to get their stories out.
And he walked by the door, and he just disappeared, just walked by it.
But then he popped back and stuck his head in the media room, goes,
psh, true.
And I was like, oh, no, don't do it.
There's 30 people in here.
said it in front of all those people and they look at me like what was that what is it going on here
i mean that's part of what was so disappointing the last few years is there were people who worked
there that i considered friends mostly orlando i mean in the uk basketball staff world
the two people over the years that i've considered a friend were orlando and slice like those were the
two i love slice i still to this day slice came in here we'd sit and talk for hours i love slice but i also
really love Orlando and I think Orlando's a great guy and I think those students were just told
they couldn't communicate with us which would stink we would seem at like derby parties Drew and I
would and it would be like we'd like be looking at each other across the room like hi remember when
we used to talk I wish we could talk hi I went up to the uh the Bronx last year to watch Ian Jackson
yeah and he was on the other side of gym and he was sitting with Cal and we had just lost the day before to
UCLA. I wasn't going to go say anything to either one of them, but he sent me a little welcome
to the Bronx. That was it. Like just, just a little gone. I've never asked him for scoop. If Cal
thought there was me ever, it's just, we had our little, it was sad. It was so, it was so, it was just
sad and it was, and it just brought a lot of other people into it that were unnecessary. But I think
it would be awesome if he ends up staying. We'll see if that happens. I was told last night,
so they can have five staff members, three of them are recruiting staffers, two,
of them are something else. So to give me an example, if when Cal was here, the three recruiting
ones were Chin, Orlando, and then the Chuck Martin guy. Then you can have two more who coach,
and those were Welsh and Welch and a Bruiser. So now there'll be three assistants, et cetera. I'm
told that he has four of those five done. I think just personally, the fifth. The
would have potentially been Kenny.
Maybe it's now Orlando.
I don't know.
But what's interesting is, I don't think anybody knows.
Like the Figer one got confirmed.
And then I think the analytics dude is probably one of them,
although that wasn't confirmed to me.
But now I think, like, I think they got him done,
and it's just people don't know.
So I give him credit.
He's moving silently and trying to get stuff finished.
Remember I said I thought there was a coach
that might bring one or two players, that was not Kenny.
That would be somebody else, and he may or may not be on.
I honestly don't know.
But I'm told that, like, they now pretty much know what they're going to do staff-wise.
It'll just at some point, Ryan, presumably leak to the general public.
We kind of thought that maybe by the end of this week,
we would have a better idea of what the staff would look like.
So it seems like it's kind of shaping into place a little bit with every guys.
I would suspect just guessing it'll leak over the next two days.
It's going to be hard to keep it mysterious until next week.
week. But, um, yeah, especially if guys are actively recruiting. Well, that's the thing is that, like,
we found out about Figer by a recruit telling us that Figer called. So I mean that, and then, you know,
I was able to confirm it, but, but we'll see. 8.59-2-8027. There is a lot of other stuff to talk about
player-wise. We'll do that next. You now know Orlando and Drew's greeting. We will take a break
and be right by. By the way, you don't know Orlando or Drew, so don't you greet them like that.
They may not take it quite the same way. Yeah, we'll be right back as KSR.
What a perfect song, Shannon.
Who is?
Drew.
Oh, yeah.
Wait until you see my t-shirt tonight.
Wow.
He says, I'm the reason for the tear drops on her guitar.
Nice.
Drew looks at me.
You look at Orlando.
I like it.
772-7-7-45-254.
What person writes, Matt, I love stories like that about Orlando.
I feel like you all haven't told stories like that recently,
and it makes me happy that you can do it again.
No, listen, I'll be honest with you.
Not only, this is part of what made the last two years miserable
is I would get, not daily, but probably every couple weeks,
a phone call about things we were saying
and whether or not they were making people in the basketball staff mad.
And I didn't want to make that relationship work.
because it was already bad, but there was nothing we could say to make it better.
And any minor negativity just made it worse.
And there were a lot of people just trapped by it.
I'm not going to speak for Orlando, but I think he was probably one of them.
There were others.
You know that, Drew.
It's not just coaches.
UK Athletics staff people.
I'm afraid to even say hi to some people.
We were just like we felt like we were walking on eggshells.
it was one of those things that all we could do was make people mad.
It didn't matter how many times I would say something nice about Calgary that would have no impact.
But if we said one negative thing, it only got worse.
It is so nice to not have that.
So, you know, I'm being real like I missed it because, you know, those first few years, think about it.
Robic would always be screwing around with us.
We loved Orlando.
I never really knew Kenny well because he was kind of quiet, but Strickland was fun, you know.
I loved Robic, too.
They were all just, like, it was awesome to be around them.
And then when Cal kind of turned, they all, like put everybody in different corners, and I just, I hated it.
You can see it, you know, they got to be loyal to their boss.
I didn't blame them.
Yeah, I didn't blame them either.
I didn't blame them at all.
Like, they got to do what they have to do.
But it just made it, I think I said this about a year ago.
Everybody needed to get on the bus together.
But the thing is, the bus driver has to want to let you on.
You know, and the bus driver did not want to let the AD on,
did not want to let the media on, did not want to let the boosters on,
and in some ways didn't want to let the fans on.
Well, what are you going to do then?
At some point, you're just kind of stuck, you know?
It's an empty bus.
At the end, it was a completely empty bus.
It used to be a yacht.
It used to be a yacht.
At the end, he was driving that bus solo.
I mean, he was.
And that, you know, when John Welch leaves and Orlando is considering Stain,
and you end up with chin and bruiser down there, I mean, I don't know what else to say.
Yeah.
You know?
I think that's a lot of our concerns.
what was happening in Lexington.
Yeah, I don't know what else to say.
Eric Lindsay leaves, T.J. Bisoner leaves.
The video guy left.
The video guy leaves to go be the video guy at Temple.
You know, that's, it is what it is.
All right, so let's talk about some news coming out of Hogg Country.
Hog Country.
Last night, Trilly Donovan, that's the kind of college basketball insider that nobody knows who he is.
But he's right much more often than he's not.
He doesn't have a 100% success record, but he's got a pretty good success record.
He says that Jerry Jones, Cowboys owner, has told Arkansas that any player that Kentucky wants,
he'll double the money for them to come to Arkansas, which I made the joke of that hadn't worked for the Cowboys.
Everybody's like, Matt, don't you understand?
There's a salary.
Like, shut up.
It was a joke.
Okay.
But what about that?
how obsessive, you know, I love how obsessive these Arkansas fans are about us.
I mean, but what do you think of that?
Jerry Jones is like, whatever they make, double it.
I love it.
I do, too.
I absolutely love it.
And I casually root for the Cowboys.
I mean, there are so many jokes you can make.
Like, Cal's doubling down on freshman.
I mean, it's right there in front of you.
All the overpaying for Deck Prescott not winning in the postseason,
it's almost like they're trying to, you know,
Dude, they're going to into those jokes a little more and be the Dallas Cowboys.
And also, he said there's only getting the paying double for the commits we had.
Well, they're not coming back here anyways.
Why are you paying them double?
Like, you talk about putting pressure on, Ryan.
Like, if you're paying, like, if you're, like, it just puts more pressure on him in his first year there, doesn't it?
I think it absolutely does.
If you're paying double for some of these guys, they can now, they have to go out and perform.
I mean, stakes are high now.
And you also, Shannon, ruin your negotiation plea.
Because now everybody can come and go, get you.
Give me double, Jerry, or I'm going somewhere else, right?
Yeah, I don't understand.
I mean, isn't this just essentially pay for play?
I mean, is that now a thing?
And that's been happening for years.
I mean, we know that's been a case.
Yeah, but I mean, like, now is that just legal?
Yeah, it's legal.
There was a court case a few months ago that said that this can happen.
So, yeah, it's completely legal.
Yeah.
I mean, it's legal.
Again, you know, you can have the best players.
But see, the problem for Cal has never been talent.
He's always had talent.
Like, I don't, I mean, plus he can only take 12 guys.
Right, so there's only so many players he can take, but that's never been the problem, Drew.
In my opinion, is not having enough talent.
Maybe one year that was the problem, but in general, they've had the talent.
Yeah, outside of the initial jokes, when I saw it, I thought, oh, are they going to go get Rob Dillingham, Reed Shepard, 3, 7-footers,
and All-American, Trey Mitchell, and build a super team.
And, you know, we saw what that just worked out for us here.
I thought last year's Kentucky team, it is still one of my favorites of all time, even though they won zero postseason games.
I mean, if they want to throw money at Cal to build another super team, good luck to him.
So, but Jerry, who knew Jerry Jones would also become an enemy?
So we got to go up against Jerry Jones and the chicken.
And the chicken people.
And Walmart.
I mean, that's a, we got chicken, Walmart, and the Dallas Cowboys against us.
I've never, I've never liked Tyson Chicken, although they did send the box.
I gave it to you all.
Yep.
I've never liked Jerry Jones.
You've never liked Jerry Jones.
And I'll go to Walmart, but only in Middlesbrough.
Because you're amongst them.
Walmarts.
Walmart.
Middlesboro.
So, you know, there we go.
We've got to fight the triangle.
Jerry Jones, Walmart, and Tyson Chicken.
Fight the good fight.
They've got to look in the mirror knowing they're paid for about Tyson Chicken.
They have to live with that.
And here's what's going to happen.
You can take all their Walmart blue light specials.
You can take all their dino nuggets.
You can take all their Cowboys' First Round Playoff losses.
And they're going to walk into Rupp Arena next year, and we're going to beat them.
We're going to beat them.
And that's going to be really funny watching it to happen.
Take a break. Be right back. Take your calls. KS.R.
T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call Tj. He'll make them pay.
Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Welcome back. TeguS. 8.9.280.22.87. Thanks to the poke folks who are here at KS. Bar for lunch. Somebody brought me coffee. This is from where? Brevity.
Brevity coffee. Thank you very much. You're with roasting, right?
Clear it. What's the name of it? Let me give you credit.
Clarity coffee roasters, and then another person brought us donuts.
Where's this from?
Donut days.
Donut days.
So I appreciate that.
Anytime somebody brings something to me, I'm excited.
We've got lots of treasures over here.
You got a bunch of boxes.
Big shout out.
Okay, so somebody sent me this sweatshirt in the mail.
And it's a hoodie, and it says, I'm a proud son of my honor roll mom.
That's awesome.
That's awesome.
And I, thank you for that.
I'm going to my mom's graduation in three weeks in Dallas, and I will wear this hoodie.
maybe not to graduation.
I don't know if my mom would like that,
but I will wear it to something.
So that's very sweet.
It's a travel outfit.
Wear it down there,
wear it back.
Every one you pass an Ova,
you're going to support your mom.
I think that's awesome.
That's one of the neatest shirts you've got.
That in the Dufant Smurt shirt that Todd Harris gave.
Those are two of my favorites.
One person writes, Matt,
why do we have to talk about Arkansas?
Focus only on our guys.
Why, I led for 15 minutes with our guys,
but the Arkansas thing still affects Kentucky
because they're taking
the view of I'm going to be petty and double pay whatever Kentucky wants that affects us.
I mean, notice Jerry Jones didn't say, I'll pay double for recruits.
It's I'll pay double for recruits that want to go to Kentucky.
Yeah.
If, you know, like that's a, they're going to be petty, and we just have to be ready for it.
I hope we offered Big Z $5 million yesterday so we can go get us 10 in Fadeville.
Run up that tab on Arkansas, and we'll see how they do in the postseason.
I said this online, and I just, before we go, the first year,
phones. One thing about where we are. I know there are a lot of people that are like,
we don't have a staff. We haven't signed anybody yet. What's happening? Are we about me? Okay,
here's what I would say. First of all, I'm told they know about half their roster now.
Okay.
Or feel very confident about it. It just hasn't come out. They feel very good about half the roster.
We have two guys right now committed. But if you're really worried, let me put it in a different way.
no one is worried, I bet, about whether or not John Calgary will have players, right?
That's the one thing you know he'll have.
Well, what does he have right now?
We have two players and no staff.
He has one player, Z, and no staff, and he had six more days than we did.
And that's not a criticism of him.
It's just that's how this works.
Like, it's going to take a little while.
So everybody's freaking out.
Louisville has had their coach for three more weeks than us, and they have four players.
Right?
Like it's going to take a little while for all this to come out.
But my guess is when it starts, Drew, it'll be a lot really quick.
It's just a matter of when it starts.
Yeah, all those guys, all the players are figuring out their options right now.
I mean, Cal had, what, six players signed and only one of them so far is committed.
I mean, you'd think with the head start he'd have, if it was something,
easy he would have just moved them to Arkansas.
He just has Z though, right?
That's what I'm saying.
But I'm saying if it's so easy to move so quickly,
Cal would already have buggy flan and everybody move with them.
I mean, these guys just take their time with their decisions,
and even Cowles Group, they're all weighing new options now.
I can kind of bring up the Louisville coach.
Yeah.
See that video he was on Lees Town Road doing an interview with Jeff Goodman.
He was driving.
Yeah, driving.
He was driving down least.
He drove by that U. Hall.
Yeah, he drives safe Kentucky.
What was he doing?
He had to probably go up to see Malichime.
Marino in Georgetown and maybe Jasper Johnson here in Lexington.
He was driving down Lee's Town Road.
But it was 100% Leas Town Road doing that interview.
All right.
Who's up first, Shannon?
Zach.
Zach, go ahead, Zach.
Zach.
All right, nice start, Zach.
Who's next?
Logan.
Logan.
Logan.
Okay, what's going on?
All right.
Do you know how to use the phones?
I absolutely know how to use the phones.
All right, I'm worried that you don't.
Let's try one more.
I've been doing this for a while.
I think it's maybe the phones are the script.
Do we need to get Rick in here and see if he can.
Bring him and his wine in here.
He seems to know some technology.
Go ahead.
Let's try Sean.
Sean, will you work third time to charm?
You know I walk out usually after three.
Yeah.
Okay, something's up with the phones.
Uh-oh.
All right.
I will let you handle that.
You can't walk out.
No, I'm not going to lock it.
It's a mechanical problem.
Yes.
But, all right, see what you can do there, Shannon.
859, 2802287.
All right, so in terms of players now, Kentucky,
yesterday we heard of like 10 new guys they reached out to.
Drew, I want to ask you a question.
How do you decipher who Kentucky should get and who shouldn't?
Like you read, okay, this dude's from Oklahoma.
He averaged 10 points.
This dude's from Wake Forest.
He averaged 14 points.
As a fan if you were to sit,
because I'm not going to act like I know who any of these dudes are.
You think I know the dude that played at St. Mary's?
I don't watch that.
Like, I mean, come on, I go to bed.
So how do you think fan?
should decipher whether or not these guys are good or not when you hear we've talked to somebody.
It's really hard.
I mean, I barely watch any college basketball that's not Kentucky on Saturdays, and you're talking,
we're looking at guys at Drexel schools I'd never consider watching, and then you do your
research and you look at them on YouTube.
If it's on YouTube, they automatically look like the best basketball player ever because
it's just their best plays.
So it's really, I don't want to say it's impossible, but you have to really get into the mud
and the taped if you were to actually differentiate these guys that aren't the best.
the name. I mean, we know what a Jeremy Roach that's been at Duke for four years. We know him.
But some of these secondary and the mid-major players, like, look at Dalton Connect.
This time last year, did anyone know what the hell Dalton Connect was?
I had heard of him because of how many points he scored, but I'm not going to act like I never seen
him play. No. So it's really hard to figure out. That's why, you know, that's why Pope's paid what
he's paid and he needs to find the staff that he needs to find.
Well, I don't know that any of us had heard of Antonio Reeves until we started recruiting, you
Nope. Right? I mean, all of a sudden you hear there's this kid Antonio Rees we may get.
I didn't know who he was. And then all of a sudden, he was our best player last year.
There's the kids small from Oklahoma State. Taita Washington just out of the blue tweets that as his high school teammate.
I never really heard of the guy. Well, take the small guy.
It's just stuff like that. The small guy is a good example because I doubt anyone in Kentucky really knew who the small guy was.
And now people are acting like if we don't get him this year that like the sky is going to fall.
but did anyone even know?
I mean, I'm sure there are people that did,
but I think most people didn't.
How are you going to evaluate it?
We got to just trust the coaching staff
that they're getting into guys
because it was so interesting to hear Mark Pope talk about
how he constructs his roster.
Okay, so I think that's important.
Yeah.
What he said on Sports Center yesterday.
If people didn't hear this, on SportsCenter,
he was asked something about recruits,
and he said, we are going to go get elite NBA recruits.
but we are going to combine them with two, three, and four-year guys.
I was glad to hear him say he's going to go compete for elite recruits.
It's going to be hard to do that this year.
They're all committed somewhere else, right?
And he's calling them for the first time.
And there's only one left, and his name's Liam McNeely,
and he was in communication with them last night.
But I do think they're going to try to do that, Ryan, going long term.
I do, too.
And, you know, for his strategy on how he constructs a roster, I think that's why I have confidence.
I mean, I haven't heard of these guys.
I didn't know this point guard.
You were talking about Oklahoma State to play with Taitai Washington until Taitai's tweet.
But yeah, you just got to trust that the coaches are going to do in the right way, doing the right thing.
Your voice kind of went up.
Tweet, tweet, tweet.
You were like.
Like Dan Glass.
You were like Dave.
Sweet.
Did he sell that place?
I don't know.
Did he?
Did he?
Maybe not.
I thought somebody told me.
He is that place.
He can't sell that place.
Yeah.
I mean, you can't have another guy come in there and go, sweet.
Like, he's got, he's got to be the guy.
The moment he wants to step away, turn off the lights on that.
Yeah, I think you just got to, you got to let it.
But so I will tell you, I had a person who's in the world of players, let's put it like that.
I talked to them last night, and I asked that question, how do we evaluate the roster?
And he said, it's important Kentucky get two or three dudes who can be studs and then fill it with other people.
He said, your Colin Chandler is one.
He was like, you already have one dude who can be a stud.
That dude can be a stud.
Now, he was like, if you get Jackson Robinson, now there's your second one.
He was like, then you got to go find one or two more.
And he was like, as far everybody else, they're going to be playing roles.
So I wouldn't sweat what their stats are and all that stuff.
And I think that's a good way to look at it, right?
And I've heard of a name that I haven't seen on any list that I think they have a good shot with,
that fans would like.
I just say stay tuned on that.
A little bit of scuttle, but I haven't seen it.
You know, all these big lists of poor play.
I have not seen his name said one time.
And I think if he were to become a cat, the fan base would like that.
Well, almost every fan, for instance, would have wanted a do theater, right?
Is that, don't you, wouldn't it?
Okay.
So how many points a game did it do average last year?
Six.
Six or seven, eight, maybe.
Okay.
So when you see a kid with stats where he averages nine points, you go nine points, that's not that good.
Think about the fact that you want.
wanted to do who averaged six points yeah there's a lot of people who want Jordan burks who
average what two points if that so like I do think we just but you need a couple studs
jackson Robinson is a stuff he's an NBA guy are you saying Shannon with the phones work I'm saying
let's try them all right I think that they may be working but we're not going to know until we try
them so let's try them let's try Zach all right Zach go oh what's up Matt there we're
Nice job, Shannon.
All right, go ahead, Zach.
Hey, Matt, this is your dollar general of Eric Church for you, but.
Hey, I got one question.
Oh, you're the dude that's always been trolling me, and I, and I, and you finally wrote me and said you should have stopped.
You should have, you're sorry you were trolling me, right?
Yeah, I didn't know it was hurting your feelings that bad.
Well, it's not even about my feelings.
It's about being a normal human being.
You would talk to me like I was an awful, like I was an awful person and you'd never even met me.
Well, it's kind of like how you talk about, you know, people on Eastern.
I've never said one bad word about the people in eastern Kentucky.
Now wait a minute, hang on just a second.
I'm not going to let you just say that.
I've never said one bad word about the people in Eastern Kentucky.
You know I love Eastern Kentucky.
Don't just come on here and just lie, Zach.
That's a lie.
You wrote me last night and you apologized and said I shouldn't have done it.
And now you're going to call and say I say bad things about the people of Eastern Kentucky.
If you want to say that stuff, you walk in here with your sunglasses and look me in the eye and do it.
Don't troll online or call anonymously and do it.
I'm not calling.
No, that's what I told you who I was.
Anyways, my question, what's the biggest possibility of Jay Lucas bringing Jeremy Roach and one more recruit that happened to do?
I appreciate the call.
859-280-2287.
It is the last call for sign-ups for the KSR Bowling League.
Yes.
See, let me just say.
That dude, see, this is a perfect example of how people are different.
Oh, they are.
He literally wrote me last night and wrote the last night and wrote,
this long apology.
And then when he calls and he gets, you know, I guess phone line radio muscles, he'll do it again.
And then he would walk in here, I'm sure, and say, you know, man, I was just kidding around.
Love the show.
So you weren't kidding around.
Just be who you are.
That's fine.
You don't like me?
That's fine.
We were better off when the phones weren't working.
Exactly.
I wish phones had worked.
Let's turn them off again.
If there's one group of people, you praise over and over and over.
It's Easter Kentucky.
Yes. People in Easter Kentucky, they do different things than I do for the most part. They vote differently than I do, but I love them.
And I don't know anybody that advocates more for the people of the mountains than me. So I'm not going to listen to that. But I am going to talk about KSR Bowling. Yes.
The league starts next week. Now, I do have one issue. This always says to send people to KSR bowling.com, but when I go to that website, it doesn't work.
Well, that would be an issue.
That would be an issue.
You're right.
It does not work.
Let me text our rep, and we'll get that corrected.
All right.
Get that correct.
Okay.
Because the first night is next Wednesday.
All right, that's the first night of bowling.
We have a special guest coming next Wednesday,
and we will have a guest most Wednesdays coming.
It's at KSR bowling.com.
Handicapped bowling.
The league is handicapped format so that you can,
don't have to be really good to play.
Try KSR bowling.
bowling.com to assemble your team.
Hopefully the website will be fixed.
If not, you can call the Collins Bowling Center to set up your league.
Yeah, they had their last night, people got their teams together so that, you know,
they've still got some room, but they're ready to go next Wednesday's first night.
Well, they need to have the website.
Yeah.
All right.
We'll be right back.
This is a KSR.
Welcome back to Tegu Sports Radio.
I have a warning for you, Shannon.
This just came out yesterday from the state of Kentucky.
Okay.
Apparently, over at least.
10 people in Kentucky have fallen for some fraud in the last few weeks.
They have gotten counterfeit Botox in their face.
Oh, no.
Now, I want to say something.
I want to say something.
I feel sorry for people who get, and apparently it's like screwing up their face
and it's like causing problems.
And I feel sorry for them, but I will say, Shannon, there were red flags that they should
have seen.
Okay.
What do you get?
Apparently, 10 people in Kentucky and in 15 other states.
Apparently there's a company that's producing the counterfeit Botox and the Department of Justice is going after.
But they say, quote, most of these injections have occurred in private homes.
Yeah, that's a big red one.
Yeah.
Don't go to somebody's house and say, fill me up with Botox.
I'm going to go ahead and tell you.
I'm not going to get Botox.
I don't think at any point in my life.
But if I do, I ain't doing it at somebody's house.
We all talked about doing that at one point, if you remember years ago.
I do remember that, yes.
But there are certain surgery, Shannon, I don't want to skimp off.
Yeah.
When you go to somebody's house and they've got concrete mix that they're putting into your face.
If somebody's going to inject something into my face, I don't want to do it right next to their coffee pot.
Like, I'm going to need, I'm going to need a, I don't know, you know, an area that is sort of hygienic.
Maybe a license, you know, on the wall?
license would be good.
I didn't know this was a thing.
At home, Botox injections.
You're shaking your head.
Do you know?
Oh, your wife's a nurse?
She's not doing that, though.
Oh, you don't have to be a nurse.
So like Shannon could start injecting Botox?
I'm going to get certified today.
No, you don't have to get certified is what he said.
He just said.
That's not good.
I don't know where to buy Botox.
Maybe on Amazon.
Either way, I'm warning people.
Do not go get Botox.
talks in someone's house.
I don't want anything, any procedure, anything in anyone's house.
I would like for it to look like a doctor's office.
I was at one this morning.
They still have the scales with the little weight thing you tap.
I hope they, I'd like one of those.
Why do they still use those, by the way?
When you go to the scales at a doctor, why are we still using the balance?
Can we not go electronic at this point?
If I'm getting Botox, I need to see one before I sit down.
It is kind of the thing at the doctor's office that you go to you've got to get your
of weight and height right off the bat.
I'm going to say that I know nothing about medicine.
My doctor still hits me in the knee with stuff.
And I feel like there's got to be a better way to do it than just pound somebody in the
knee to see if they like, feels like that's another thing that we should have advanced
past.
These are all things I did right before the show.
My knees good.
You know, the whole routine hadn't changed.
Look at this.
You can buy Botox 10 units for $100 on Groupon.
If you're getting your Botox from Groupon, that might be another red line either.
I'm not going to do.
We've said this before.
Airlines,
toilet paper,
bourbon,
medical procedures.
I don't want the low budget one.
I'll pay a little extra.
Toilet paper is huge on that list.
I'll give you a little extra money on those.
Sean.
Sean,
go ahead, Sean.
Hey,
Hey, man,
and I was the guy that called from the Yom Center yesterday
while I was blasting KSR.
Oh, you fill vending machines.
Okay, yeah, hey, man.
What's up?
Yep.
Hey, so Cal had that schedule,
scheduled with Indiana?
Yes.
I was wondering if you guys think that
we will still be playing that.
Yes, I think we'll play. I actually
think you will see Mark Pope
play more games like Indiana,
Gonzaga, the preseason
tournaments. I'm not going to say our schedule
will be harder, but I think
you're going to see our schedule be more
fan-friendly. I still
think we'll play in the Champions Classic,
but it wouldn't shock me if we don't do
the CBS Classic anymore.
because I don't think that's necessarily been the most successful thing in the world.
But yes, I do expect the Indiana series to continue,
and I do expect the kind of games Kentucky likes playing.
You will see more of those, don't you?
Yeah, you know, Pope talked about going back to Maui.
We'll see a lot of things like that.
Do they have to eliminate, like, the CBS Classic to be able to add the Maui Invitational?
No.
The Maui Invitational is when we play.
So when other teams play the Maui Invitational,
We play that thing where we play like Stonehill and Texas A&M Congress.
That is our quote-unquote Maui Invitational.
So you're basically trading three terrible home games for a tournament like that.
So yes, sir, to answer your question, I do think we'll end up playing the Indiana series.
Okay. Thanks for all you do for the BBN, guys.
Appreciate it.
We all say Cal would never go back to Assembly Hall.
We were right.
Cal Perry was not going to Bloomington no matter what.
He was like, I will be gone before.
Is the Indiana series start this year?
I think it's supposed to.
Well, I'm throwing up.
I think it starts next season.
I mean, if it does, next year's season is loaded.
Because you'll have Indiana, St. John's, Louisville, Gonzaga,
the Champions Classic, the CBS Classic, and a Big 12 game.
It comes back in 2025, 26.
We got another season without bad.
Indiana next year.
Okay, got you.
859-2-80-22-87.
That schedule starts getting hard
if you think about it after a while.
We will take a break.
Come back.
