Now here's Matt Jones.
Welcome everyone at Kentucky Sports Radio Monday, April the 22nd.
I'm Matt Jones here.
I'm in Louisville, Kentucky with Shannon.
Ryan and Drew are in Lexington.
And you can give us a shout.
I'm going to be here watching two phone lines already ringing on the Clark
Puffet Show and Pump and Shop phone line, 859-2802-287.
A-Vision Auto Glass Text Machine, 772, 774-5254 in this edition, sponsored by the T.J. Smith
Law Ves.
You call T.J. I'll Make them Pay.
I'm here in Louisville today.
We will be in Lexington, Tuesday, Wednesday, remote Friday at a Clark's Pumping Shop.
Where is that, Ryan?
Do you know which one it's at?
No, I was trying to find out the location really right before the show, but I know we're there,
but I don't know which one.
It'll be somewhere.
And I just found out, Drew, before the show started, one day this week, and I don't know which day it'll be, but one day this week, we will have Mark Pope on the show. So that's exciting.
Busy man. I'm really wondering about his health right now if that man has slept because he has been everywhere since he's touchdown in Lexington.
Yeah, I want to talk about that. I want to talk about the Mark Pope travels. But first of all, an awesome weekend. Shannon, it's my least favorite weekend in Louisville. So I got out of here until yesterday, which is Thunder.
You don't like the fireworks?
Oh, you know, I hate thud.
I think it's so stupid.
Everybody goes and sits and bakes, although it was a little cool list of year, but like, and watches the planes.
The drone show is kind of cool.
I will give them that.
What's a drone show?
Like, what's that?
There's like 200 drones that go up in the air and they're synchronized and they do different things.
What do they do?
Like there was a butterfly and it had it like flapping its wings.
And that's kind of cool.
I mean, that it takes.
So they just have things flap their wings?
Yeah.
And that's cool?
Then they like, did the.
the American flag up in the sky with all the drones. That was neat.
Okay.
Like a very patriotic moment.
So were you, were you like excited? Did you go?
No, no. I watched it from home on my couch.
You watched it on television?
Yeah, they broadcast that all day.
Well, that's even less cool.
I mean, I thought it was fine.
What do you know, how is it less cool?
I'm looking at the same thing you're looking at if you're down there.
Well, I don't know.
I feel like on television, Drew, I'd almost want something even more impressive than that
if I'm watching it on TV.
I mean, in person, I don't know.
I never understand.
this city of Louisville, Drew, it is fascinated by things that no one else in the country would care about.
One is Thunder.
Two is the boat race.
They still do that, Shannon?
Yes, I love it.
Exactly.
It's so weird this city when it comes to a couple different things.
A bed race?
What's the bed race?
They push beds around a track.
They race beds.
See, Drew, I mean, look at these people.
Like, that's what I'm talking about.
They care about the weirdest things.
Honestly, this is the first time that I even heard Louisville Thunder.
was this weekend. I also tune Louisville Thunder out when it's going on. I know there's fireworks.
I guess now I know there's a bed race and a boat race too, but other than that I, it's not on my
radar either. What's a bed race? I think it would be like you lay down in a bed or lie down in a bed,
whatever the proper wording is. I'm not really sure. I guess I don't know if anybody can. I don't
think there's professional bed racers. I don't know that there's like a pro bedridden. So I guess anybody
could. So you and I could like get on, we could enter. When is it?
I think it's like next week maybe.
Let me look up the date on it.
You find out the details of the bed race.
Ryan,
Bed race feels like your kind of thing.
You could be,
I feel like you'd be good at it.
Yeah,
groups get together and they form their own team,
but you need like maybe six people on your team,
something like that.
Oh, so this is like something.
That's like a KSR road trip.
There you go.
It's perfect.
We're the favorite, right?
We can do this.
And then you,
do you put your bed on wheels?
Yeah.
And somebody has to ride in the bed,
which would be me.
And then everybody else has to.
to push the bed. No, no, no, no. We put the skinniest guy in the bed. Yeah, we don't put the smallest guy in the bed. Yeah, we put the littlest dude in the bed. Okay, so when is the bed race? Still looking here. It looks like April 29th. April 29th. That's next Monday. Yeah, let's do it. All right, here's what I'll say to the city of Louisville. Well, actually, I have to be in Lexington. Too bad. I would have done it. I would have liked it. I didn't know that was a thing. There is an entry fee. How much? $150. $150. $150.
It includes five participant T-shirts and five collectible Pegasus Pins.
I have to pay them to push my own bed down the road.
It's hosted by our competitors.
The other classic rock station that I'm up against.
Screw the bed race.
See, I told you it was a stupid bed race.
I knew it was stupid.
We have a problem anyway.
We don't, where are we going to get a bed?
We got to make a bed on wheels.
We've got to get that figured out.
I feel like that would have been the easiest part of all this.
We'll get a sponsor.
One of our listeners would have done it.
But it was a big weekend you had Keenlin,
he had the UK baseball series, and we'll get to all that.
But let's talk about basketball.
Drew had a picture this morning, which he got.
Did you get that from Ross, I think?
And a story that comes with it that's pretty funny too.
Okay.
So for people who haven't seen it, it was a picture last night.
Well, first of all, let's go through the news real quick.
Kentucky got a commitment from Amari Williams of Drexel.
He is a big, yeah, why not?
That's right. He's a big man. He's exactly what Kentucky needed. I think they need to go get at least one more big. But this is a dude three-time all-conference rebounding. First-team all-conference last year. The guy can play. He's a rim protector. He's basically everything, Drew, that we did not have last year. I think it's fair to say.
Oh, absolutely.
I mean, just the three-time defensive player of the year and the 7-5 wingspan is all I need to know,
because that sounds like someone who can stop a pick and roll.
So we are already one step forward going into this new era with some defense inside that I'm excited about.
I know if you look at portal rankings, I guess he wasn't in the top 10 or wasn't one of the huge stars,
but I really like the fit and how Pope went after him right away and likes him.
Yeah, I don't know if he, you know, they say Mark Pope's 610,
either he's lying or Amari Williams is seven foot three because the dude towers Ryan over
Mark Pope so I think he's going to be a great addition.
Yeah, you know, you read all the clips on him.
They say, talk about how he's just this great player on the defensive end.
Like you said, rebounder, rim protector, and that's something that I think if Mark Pope's
going to reshape his roster, okay, check that box.
He got that guy.
So you got that guy.
Yep.
So now we have Shannon three players.
Okay.
So now we have Travis Perry, Colin,
Chandler and Amari Williams. So we're good for three on three. Let's go. Now we need some more.
So they brought in Richie Saunders last night. KSR was the first to report. Richie Saunders was on
campus. He played at BYU for Mark Pope. Richie Saunders gives us another. Is Richie going to play?
Is back? Have we had a Richie since farmer, Brian? I don't think we have. It doesn't seem like we have had another Richie.
I do not think we've had another Richie since Farmer.
So we potentially can have a Richie.
A lot of people think he's very likely to come here.
You've got to think if he makes the trip and he already knows Mark Pope, it's a good sign.
Average 10 points a game last year really came on in the second half of the year.
Shot 49% in conference play.
BYU guy wrote me last night and said, Matt, I wanted you to have anyone on our roster
except Jackson Robinson and Richie Saunders.
and you might end up with both of them and it makes me mad.
But Drew, you got to like if they're able to get him.
That would be another good addition.
Give us four players.
Yeah.
First, I like that we're just finally getting some pieces.
I know there were concerns.
People wanted instant results from Pope,
but he's, you know, slowly getting this roster built together.
This might be a bench piece, we'll see.
But I like his numbers.
He shot 50% from the field as a guard.
I mean, that's pretty impressive.
That's very impressive.
50% from the field.
Yeah.
And like you said, BYU really liked him.
And to tell the story I was going to tell last night,
my friend Ross was sitting on an airplane when he landed at Bluegrass Airport,
I guess saw your tweet and was looking up Richie's Instagram and followed him
when he noticed the guy next to him on the plane was Richie himself.
That's cool. Ross was being creepy stalking him and then said, wait a minute.
Wait a minute.
There you are.
Yeah, so he got that photo at the airport for a late arrival.
But, you know, I think you got Travis Perry, the Colin kid,
and now if they get Richie Saunders, you're building some depth in a back court.
You can go out and get one of the portal stars where there's still plenty of those there
in contact with.
Yeah, I mean, you got to have enough players, Ryan.
So Richie Saunders, I mean, I watched BYU play once or twice last year.
I don't remember which guy was which except I did notice Robinson Jackson.
But it's not a surprise.
I mean, if you have a couple guys from BYU, you've got to assume that helps Pope get his system in place, too.
Yeah, correct me if I'm wrong, this guy was his primary.
role. He was the six man last year at BYU,
Saunders. That was his role, I believe.
Is that right? I think Jackson was the six
man. Oh, okay. But either way,
in the second half of the year, he was
really, really good.
So, you know,
so there you go. So those are the
two that we have so far. Here's
the interesting part of him to me, Shannon.
Forget about basketball. He's
married.
Oh. Here's my question.
Have we ever had a married
player on the team.
I'm sure we have back in history.
But when's the last time,
Ryan, we've had someone married on the team?
Yeah, there's been some married football players,
but married basketball players,
Gary Gamble on Rupp's runt.
Derek Willis proposed.
I think that's as close as we got on.
I'm not taking proposed.
We've had a bunch of proposed.
CJ Frederick got proposed.
I want to know who's married.
Who had to come home to the wife, Shannon,
during the thing?
Who had to come home and
practice, honey. That's right. Honey, I expect dinner after, you know, I mean, who is that? Who's watching the kids? I got
practice. I mean, Jack Golky for Oakland probably came home to that. But for Kentucky, I don't know.
So for you historians, I'm sure back in the day, like when we got people after they came back from World War II and stuff, I'm sure we had guys who were married.
But for you historians, who would be the last married player that Kentucky has? Because I do.
think it's interesting, Channing, to think about what a married player would have to go through.
Yeah.
Right?
Does he get to live in the dorm?
I wouldn't think you would.
Like, what if you were required to?
I think they are required to.
So what does the wife do?
Does the wife just, I'm sorry, honey, I'm staying over here.
Is the wife going to like that?
And the wife can't move in.
And if you're the coach, do you make an exception for if you're married?
Well, who makes the rules to begin with?
Is it the coach?
I don't know.
The world?
I'm not sure.
No, it's not the NCAA.
Because there have been times the football players live off campus.
But the basketball players, Ryan, as far as I know, at least during the Cal era, always had to live on campus.
So what happens if you don't?
Yeah, that's where I'm, you know, in this era of living in the lodge.
Actually, there was one player that didn't live on campus, Drew.
You remember that?
Oh, that's true.
Yeah.
A couple of them might have had multiple spots.
Yeah.
So never mind.
But in general you're supposed to.
Ryan, do you think a wife would be okay with her husband living on campus?
Knowing what we know that happens at that lodge?
Absolutely not.
Would there be a wife be happy with that?
Okay, now wait a minute, though.
Do you make, do you make, first of all, what do you know that happens at the lodge?
Ryan, they don't.
Seriously, what do you know?
Okay, come on.
I'm not going to get into it here on the radio show.
I like how the oldest man amongst us.
Drew thinks he knows all that's happening at the lodge scene.
Do you know what he's talking about, Drew?
I don't know.
I'm looking at him.
He's being sly of though.
Maybe he knows all the secrets of the lodge.
I like the idea that she has to room with another player with him because they all have
a bunk mate.
Okay, so that's what I was going to ask.
I think, Mara Williams should just be in the bed next to Richie and his wife for the next year.
Well, you know.
The other bed, not the same bed.
I think it would be interesting to see.
Okay, Shannon, would you allow the husband to have his wife stay in the dorm as well?
That would be awkward.
You need a king-sized bed.
Well, I'm sure they could figure that out.
Somebody they could get one of those.
So, I mean, I guess it's up to the roommate.
I guess you're going to be the third wheel.
Oh, no, no.
She would get, they wouldn't have a roommate.
Let's just assume they get their own room, but there's two of them in there.
I think I'd be okay with that.
But then, of course, all the other players are going to be worried about my girlfriend.
But it's different, though.
You're not married.
I would say to them, all right, you want to get married, Travis Perry?
Then you can have it happen, but you're going to have to get married.
So anyway, so that's what's going on right now.
There's another player that hopefully is visiting either tonight or tomorrow.
They're at least hoping to, I think, is that great Osabor kid from Utah State.
So, Ryan, overall, it feels like things are moving and shaking and starting to go.
Yeah, you know, we kind of talked about that last week.
In the upcoming days, you're going to see the staff shape up.
You're going to see the roster shape up.
But like Drew said, Mark Pope has been very, very busy doing both, trying to get the pieces of
together on both his staff and the roster.
The remote Friday is on Sandersville Road, Clark's Popovich.
That's mine. That's mine.
It's backyard.
Yeah.
Okay, there you go.
That's the one I thought we were going to last time.
All right, perfect.
859-280-2287.
Who's the last married player?
Also, another thing Mark Pope's doing that no other coach that I can remember has done
consistently, we'll deal with that and more here on KSR.
Be right back.
Scoop came out Saturday just out of.
nowhere with a right hook drew from the side saying he had that Shannon was going to be playing it
twice over the next couple days. Did you see that? Was Scoop trying to scoop?
Scoop, you got anything to say for that? I think we heard it once and we're going to hear
some really great news in the days ahead. Well, I mean, that's not a crazy prediction that we're going
to get another commitment here soon. Do you have like some details? He did say great news.
It's going to be some great news.
You weren't picking up what he was putting down.
See, sometimes he's too clever for his own good, isn't he?
He is.
So are you putting that as scoop?
Well, he hasn't, I think, fully, I want to know, is it scoop or is it scuttle?
But you said scoop.
Do you think or do you know as what I would say?
It's right.
I'm the preacher.
Do you think so or do you know so?
My guy is never wrong, and he said that we're going to get some really great news this week.
All right.
Sounds like scoop to me.
I'm going to put it down a scoop.
It's up to you if it's not.
Chet Lemon gets my Kentucky Bread and tweet today.
Go to Kentuckybread.com for your UK gear and your KSR gear.
We've gone from Instagram models trying to creep on cows players to where are the players' wives going to sleep.
It's a different culture now.
It just is.
It's a different culture.
And Drew, I think that's going to be a shock for a lot of folks.
we're going to be like a 180 different program overnight, really.
It's different, but it can be refreshing.
We had a good run of being the cool school.
It didn't really get the results over time we wanted.
Now we're just trying a new method.
This summer, we're just going to regular Drake's down the street and getting sushi.
We're not going to Drake's house.
We're just going to go and get a little team dinner.
I mean, the rappers posting about us, I think those days are over.
Yeah, no, there'll be rappers.
It'll just be like, it'll be Christian rappers.
that will be posting about it.
It'll just be different.
That's all it is.
But difference's not bad.
Something new.
As long as they win, we don't care.
Mark Pope, Shannon,
picked up and took the coaches,
or excuse me,
took all the recruits to the airport this weekend.
He would go personally.
So Amari Williams was here.
He picked him up and took him to the airport when it was over.
Then last night he picked up the Saunders guy.
He went and picked him up.
I guarantee you that that hadn't happened a lot in UK history.
And now people are like, well, he doesn't have a staff.
He does have a staff.
Cal's staff is left over all the like, not the coaches, but you know,
the administrative people like the people that work in social media and all that stuff.
The airport pick up people.
The airport pick up.
But he still went Shannon and picked up and took everybody to the airport.
Do you think that's cool?
I do think that's cool.
I mean, I don't know how many times Calipari drove a player.
to the airport, but I would say probably not many times.
And Pope has that going for him.
It feels like he's a very, I don't know what the word is.
Maybe just person on personal, yeah.
Personable guy, you know, with the fans and seemingly now with the players as well.
I don't like Ryan to take people to the airport now, my friends.
I'm like, they have Uber's.
Like, can you not just go to the airport?
To see him to put, I actually, I'm pretty impressed that he took the kid to the airport.
I'm very impressed.
I think it did shows like Shannon said, a little personal touch.
you know when you're in a car with somebody like some of our best conversations we've had as a group has been when we're in the car
so maybe he's taking advantage of that and he's just a likable personable guy develop that relationship with that recruit
yeah i i i mean i'm sure other coaches have done it somebody sent me a picture earlier of cal in like
2013 at an airport meeting a kid and that's okay i believe that i also will note drew that was
12 years ago like it was a different situation but for for pope
to take them and get them, to go with them to Keenland, to go with them to the baseball game,
he is certainly taking a hands-on role that is very, well, hands-on that maybe we haven't seen as
much in recent years. And that's part of the reason we need to reset. Cal did go to Keenland
in the airport when he first got to UK, but at the end of the year, you didn't see Cal at Kentucky
baseball games or Keenland are doing so many personal experiences with these players. So I'm glad,
and it's refreshing to see Pope stepping in and doing that. I know he was at the baseball
What was it yesterday was at the baseball game?
I mean, at Keenland on Saturday, with everything else he has going on,
it's amazing he's able to make these appearances and show the guys around personally like he has.
The Keenland thing's got to be awesome, Shannon, right?
Like they walk into Keenland.
Pope is, I wasn't there, but it was a beautiful day.
I'm sure there were a million people.
Pope walks out there with Williams.
I'm sure people are going crazy, right?
Yeah.
I mean, if you're a recruit on a visit, that's got to be pretty awesome, right?
I would think so, especially some of these guys where they're coming from to now Lexington.
Yeah, to from Drexel.
Yeah.
I mean, nobody's going to.
Nobody knows who he is at Drexel?
No.
To come on.
Like, Keenland, I just, I can't imagine that not be a winning scenario.
Even if you don't like horses to just show up and have all these people yelling at you.
Everyone's dressed up, beautiful, and they're all screaming at you, Ryan.
That's got to be great, isn't it?
Yeah, you've got the escort through the.
parade of people and they're all cheering for you and clapping as you walk by,
that had to be like a surreal moment for that guy.
And, Ed, he's from Nottingham, England.
This isn't his country.
He's from Nottingham.
He's from Nottingham.
He cheers for Forrest.
And like he shows up in Lexington.
Cool.
That's got to be amazing.
Matthew, you're up first.
Go ahead, Matthew.
Oh, long time.
First time.
Who are?
Who are?
Hey, I don't want to be the guy who brings up old takes, but I have, I've been sitting on this for a few weeks.
And you had a take a few weeks ago on the most exciting UK players that was just a dereliction of duty.
The fact that you never even mentioned Willie Colleystein, let alone didn't have any of your top five,
like the greatest dunker.
First of all, way to stay timely for something that happened six weeks ago after we left,
lost a coach and have a new coach and have recruits on campus.
So Matthew, way to stay on topic.
But I'm fine.
I love Willie Colley Stein.
But for me, excitement in part means handling the ball and getting to the basket.
And while Willie was an amazing dunker, maybe the best big man dunker that we've ever had,
as far as exciting the way I'm talking about, which is when they get the ball, you cannot stop looking at them.
Willie would not be in my top five.
He certainly wouldn't be there with Wall, Fox, Monk.
And I don't even remember who else was on my list, but he wouldn't be on that list.
No.
Dereliction.
Derelliction.
All right.
I appreciate the call.
Yeah.
859-280-2287.
Why'd you pick him as first call?
I didn't.
You did.
Shut up.
You're in the studio today.
Let's go to Jeremy.
Go ahead, Jeremy.
Hey, guys.
I got a lot to say, so I just want to get right to it.
But, you know, I'm looking here at some names.
And, you know, I'm looking at, because people want to know what's our roster
look like next year.
everybody's concerned about who's going to be on our roster.
I'm looking.
We got Amari Williams, Travis Perry, Colin Chandler already locked in,
locked those guys in.
And then we got names that we're talking about great Osabor.
I think he's coming.
You know, and we got names that we're talking about perfect fit.
I think Kate Tyson, if we're talking about who's the perfect fit for our roster next year,
people need to be thinking about Kate Tyson and Andre Stoyakovich.
I think they're both.
Well, first of all, you've got to make sure the people are.
interested in here, right? So, so, I mean, I think there's, yeah, but you got to know,
like, are they interested and see interested in them? So I, I don't want fans to get their hopes
up for a guy that I don't know if we're getting or not. We'll take a break. Beery back.
KS.R. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay.
Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
All right, Ryan, Rick Robey played his senior year married.
of people were saying that. I didn't realize that.
You didn't know them? No, did not know that.
I didn't either. Did you see other people were saying Michael Porter was married when he was here
at Kentucky? Yeah, I try not to think about that.
But Rick Robey, that was during the title chase, wasn't it? Yeah, in 1978.
So.
More married players. Yeah. Yeah. That's what it takes to get a title. I don't know.
859-2-80-2287.
One person writes, Matt, it's been very hard for me to figure out who's right, who's wrong,
and how you decide who the commitments are.
What are you doing?
Well, I'm only deciding based on, I mean, I'm, well, for me personally, I'm talking,
I got one person I'm talking to that knows exactly what's going on.
And if they don't tell me, then I take everything with skepticism.
Now with that said, there's information that comes out that I don't hear.
Like, for instance, I think Kyle Tucker broke the Jason Hart Mark Fox hire.
I believe Kyle Tucker.
But most of the stuff online, Drew, I think it's just people talking.
Like, there's not a, here's what happens when you're getting out information.
On every coaching staff, there's one or two guys that leak stuff to the public.
Drew, you would agree with that.
Ryan, both of you've been through this, right?
It's their job.
Sometimes it's their job.
Sometimes they do it intentionally.
And then sometimes they're blabber mouse.
And they do it unintentionally.
And what ends up happening when a staff comes is people make connections to those folks.
So for me, for a long time, my source was the coach.
And then it wasn't for a while.
And so then you just had to get it where you could.
Well, right now, there's no staff.
on campus except the figure guy at BYU and I don't really know if anybody in Lexington
knows who those people are yet. So right now I don't think there's a lot of information
out there coming from UK. But Ryan, what is happening now is because of NIL,
recruiting involves in some ways talking to donors. You know what I mean? Because you have to
know whether or not you can do the NIL for these people. So I think sometimes
the information now is coming from that.
And then a lot of this information now is coming from the kids and agents.
And so there's just a lot of stuff out there.
And for me, Ryan, it's hard to know what's real.
So for me, I don't believe anything until someone within the program tells me, but that's
just me.
Yeah, you're right.
There's a lot of fingers involved and a lot of people involved now in the recruiting process.
So those surprise commitments are kind of, you don't see those much anymore because, like
you said, there's so many people that are involved with the recruiting.
Well, perfect example, this Richie Saunders kid visiting last night.
I don't think Drew anybody had that online and then all of a sudden he's visiting.
Right?
Like so sometimes I do know this.
On Friday, I got told by Shannon an agent.
This kid is committing to Kentucky tomorrow.
It feels like a good source.
Well, but then I was like, I don't know this person.
Yeah.
And guess what?
Tomorrow came.
They didn't commit.
and I've still not heard their name put together with Kentucky.
So, Drew, I just, this is such a weird time that for me personally,
I'm like airing on the side of waiting until things are true.
It's not always a bad report or wrong report.
Pope has cast such a wide net.
There are so many names out there.
That's true.
He's going to end up with a fraction of them.
So we're trying to learn as much as we can.
But realistically, most of these people are going to end up at other schools.
I've even had someone I trust tell me a week ago about,
it might be the same person you're talking about.
I don't know who you talk to.
about a commitment that was going to happen or setting it up it's done and then I followed up
and like, well, it might not be happening. It's just there's so many moving parts and Pope
trying to figure out who goes together and how to build this roster that I'm kind of just
just staying, keeping a vague opinion until I know like an Amari Williams or a great Osabor
pretty close to pull in the trigger. And I'm not hating, but shit, I think a lot of people are like,
here's my chance to make my name for myself. Yeah, right? Yeah. I'm not hating. I get it.
Hey, we've all been there. But if you really want to know, like a perfect example is
great osse board. Now, I believe in Scoop, Shannon. I believe in Scoop. Yeah, I believe in
him. Okay. I believe in him. But I know there's at least one more school that's all in
him on him and that doesn't believe they've lost him yet. Now, I believe in Scoop, Shannon.
Somebody's going to be wrong. But I'm not saying he's coming yet just because I don't think it's done.
But, Shannon, I believe in Scoop. If Scoop tells me it's happening. To me, it's happening. Scoop rarely
puts his neck on the line.
and it doesn't happen.
Yep.
So Scoop, I'm holding this over you like I need this to be right.
I feel good about the great news.
Do you feel great about it?
I feel great about this news or the Kentucky.
If you're wrong, we're going to call you poop instead of Scoop.
Do you like that there's a chance we may have four players who played basketball last year in the state of Utah, Drew?
I went to Utah last year.
It's a lovely state.
Felt connected to that program while I was there for a couple days.
Sure.
I got nothing against Utah.
that Mark Pope's like, you know what, BYU, I'm getting your two best players. Utah, I'm going to
get your best player and Utah State. I'm going to get your best player. I'm just going to take
the whole state with me. It would be like Cal going and getting two guys from Kentucky, one from
Louisville, and then just taking one from Western Ryan at the same time. Well, they were good.
That's the thing. BYU, Utah State. They've been good the last couple of years. So yeah,
if we're going to take their best players, bring it. Yeah. Grover. Go ahead, Grover.
questions. One, Dan Isle married Sherry Hughes in 1970, and they're still married today.
Coach Rupp gave them a sterling silver T-set as a wedding dress.
Really? That's a good fee. I did piece of info, all right?
I'm the student manager. Yeah, you've told us that, yes.
Okay, the Great Bed Races. I'm the operations chair for the Kentucky Derby Festival.
He held Monday night, April 29th at Broadbent Arena, which is at the fairgrounds.
we have 41 beds entered.
They race against the timing chip, which is strapped to the leg of the bed.
You have four pushers and a driver.
And they get a gold trophy.
And this is the 26th year for the great bed race.
There you go.
Well, Grover with the info.
Thank you very much.
I appreciate it.
A driver, Shannon.
What does that mean a driver?
Well, I mean, you got your pushers, but somebody's got a...
Aren't you more of a rider?
Direct it into which area it's going in.
I mean, you're not controlling it, are you?
It's not like it's got a steering.
wheel. It would, yeah. You would have like a, I think you would have a wheel on it. Oh, you have a steering
wheel on the bed? I don't know this. I would think that you were making that. Well, how else would you
drive it though? They push it. Okay, but you got four people pushing. Yeah. How are you going to
drive it without some sort of wheel? I mean. I understand, but they're pushing the wheels. It's like
pushing your suitcase. It's not driving it. Well, he said driver. I don't know. I feel like you'd
run into a wall pretty quickly without a steering wheel. That's what I'm saying, Drew. I don't know. So there is a steering
I don't know that.
You got to turn the tires.
Yeah.
I don't know that.
Okay.
I'm going front wheel drive.
They have a steering wheel.
Drive.
Well, they're not actually driving,
but you've got to have some mechanism to turn.
Just steer it.
Yeah.
You just all push it in a different direction.
Seems like a good way to finish.
I mean, isn't that what's entertaining?
Wouldn't the entertaining part be watching the beds flip over and stuff?
I don't think they flip over.
I think they do.
Casualties in those things.
First of all, they're not going 90 miles an hour.
or they're pushing a bed.
I don't think it goes like that.
None of us, no.
We don't know.
Let's just be honest.
Not one person here has any idea what they're talking about.
Francis, go ahead, Francis.
Hey, Matt.
Got a trivia question for you concerning Kentucky.
Okay.
There's a portion of Kentucky that you cannot get to unless you drive.
It's on the other side.
It's like on the other side.
it's like on the, it's like an island out on the western tip, right?
And you have to like, it's Missouri, Tennessee right out there, right?
Yeah, part of Fulton County, I think.
Yes.
That must be in your book that you're right.
Yeah, I didn't go to it, but I do know about it.
There's a part that you have to go through Tennessee to get to, right?
Yeah, it's Fulton County.
It's out in the edge of Fulton County.
It's like, I said it's an island.
I don't know if it's an island, but it's like it's a peninsula.
A peninsula.
Okay, yes. No, I haven't been there, but I do know that it exists.
I think it's called the Kentucky Bend.
Yeah, I think it is.
Yeah, we came here from North Carolina, and once I got out to Western Kentucky,
having done Eastern, I felt like a Kentucky.
Yeah, well, it's a different state in some ways.
And it is, I appreciate the call.
I always say this.
I don't think there's very many states that the geography changed.
more from one side to the other.
I mean, when you get out there to the Mississippi River states,
you're basically like in Nebraska and Kansas.
And then when you're in the mountains,
you're like in West Virginia, et cetera.
And then when you're up in Northern Kentucky,
Ryan, I think it's almost like you're in Ohio, you know,
and yet they're all in the same state.
That's what makes Kentucky great.
We're beautiful.
And the two sides, Eastern Kentucky is beautiful in its own right,
but Western Kentucky with the lakes and everything.
thing. It's beautiful in its own right. We've got the water. You've got the terrain.
Yeah, the only state I can think of that's like that is maybe New York State.
Because, you know, upper New York State is nothing like the city. But there aren't many that I think
are that different from one side of the other. Like I said, New York is the one that comes to
to mine. Bluegrass Home Center is in London. We were just there. They were really nice people.
I'm not just saying that. They said, Shannon, they told us when we were there that when they
started, they decided to put all their advertising budget in the KSR and it's worked for them. And that made
me feel good. Yeah, that's cool. Because I mean, that's like a local place and it made it work.
Bluegrasshomecenter.com, multi-section manufactured homes, two, three, and four and five bedrooms
available. It's in London, but they'll bring it to you lowest 48,900. It's Bluegrass Home
Center. They offer home only finance with zero dollars down payments to qualified buyers. Go see them on
Rudy Bear Road. It's right off the interstate.
In London, it's Bluegrass Home Centers.
We'll take a break, be right back. KSR.
So they do have a steering wheel.
Yep.
People are telling me, Shannon, they race in a figure eight track.
Oh.
What could possibly go wrong?
Does that mean they just, like, run into each other?
A big wreck.
That feels a lot more dangerous than not having a steering wheel.
Yeah, we'll definitely make sure we have Billy up there at the front.
Yeah, Billy gets the ride.
They can eject it from the bed.
They also have a parade before the race for you to show off
how you decorated your bed.
Oh.
So we could put all kinds of Kentucky stuff on there.
Yeah.
Sell sponsorship.
It sounds awful.
But I mean, not the event.
Like, I'd go watch it, but like having to set up your bed and all that, that would be hard.
We could pay somebody to do it.
Okay, good point.
We're just the racers.
We're the talent.
We don't.
Aren't we the talent?
We don't decorate.
Okay, fair enough.
I didn't realize that we were the talent.
So somebody says, Matt, Texas is.
like Kentucky, very different from one side to the other. No, it's not. It's exactly the same.
We've driven through all of it, Drew. I mean, the cities are bigger, but Texas is Texas, right?
Austin's the only thing different in Texas.
I feel like we've seen a lot of Texas, and in my brain felt like we're on the same road the entire time.
The eastern part of Texas that's next to Arkansas is the same as Lubbock.
And then the north of Dallas ain't that much different than Houston.
So I'm not buying that.
Now, North Carolina, Ryan, that's a good one.
Yeah.
The eastern part of North Carolina, very different than the beach on the western part.
Or other way around, eastern on the way, and then the western.
Yeah, that's a good one.
You know, I was thinking, you know, like Tennessee and Kentucky both just that's,
the topography is so different from one end of the state to the other.
It'd be hard to top that, but North Carolina is a good one.
Yeah.
No, Tennessee is kind of like, I guess Tennessee's a little like that.
But I feel like Western Kentucky is even more farmland than Western Tennessee.
because Western Tennessee has like Memphis, you know, which is not really a farm.
It's a city.
So anyway, there's your geography lesson for today.
I got a question for you.
And Shannon, I feel like you can do this.
Don't you have a Jeep, right?
Yes, I have a Jeep wrangler.
Okay, so I'm going to Europe.
And, you know, it's very hard to, there's going to be a period where I may need to rent a car.
It's very hard.
They don't have automatics there.
but they don't have many.
They're hard to find.
You can find them, but it's not easy.
Everybody drives a stick, which is odd to me,
but everybody drives a stick.
So here's my question for you.
Do you think in the next five or six weeks I could learn to drive a stick?
Because you can get automatics, but it's not easy,
and they're more expensive.
You think I could learn in the next few weeks to drive a stick in a foreign country.
Do they drive on the wrong side of the road?
No. Only England drives on the wrong side of the right. Yeah, you could do it. Absolutely.
In five or six weeks, you get plenty of time. But don't wait to the last minute. But yeah, you could do it if you start now.
Ryan, do you think I could do it. I absolutely think you can do it, but I don't want to be the guy to teach you because your patience level is going to be tested, I think, as you learn how to do this.
Go ahead, Drew. I rented a car in Ireland and Scotland, which is on the wrong side of the road. I have anxiety right now thinking about doing that five years ago.
So did you drive? Was it a stick? But you know how to drive.
a stick. Well, I was about to add, I paid for the automatic car at the rental place, but I still
want nothing to do with driving outside of America ever. I pulling out of Enterprise almost got
teaboned in front of the people waving at me after they told me you look the other way than you
do in America. It just felt natural. Yeah, but that's not how most of Europe is. That's just up there.
Learning the stick, I think, is still going to be quite a challenge in a short window here.
I drove in Italy. I found an automatic Shannon in Italy, and I was fine. I mean, they drive fast.
ass, but still, that was fine.
Yeah.
But I, there's a couple places I need a car that I'm thinking about going.
And I just feel like I'm going to get there and they're not going to have them an automatic.
And I'm going to be like, got to drive a stick.
So will you teach me?
I don't know how to do it myself, to be honest with you.
Oh, so your Jeep is not manual.
It's automatic.
So you don't know how to drive a stick.
I don't.
Do you know how to drive a stick?
Ryan, you do, right?
Yeah.
My first car was a stick.
Drew, do you know how to drive a stick?
I do not.
but I will happily sit in the back seat and film you all as we go.
So, Ryan, would you like, do you have a stick?
I don't.
I don't know any of my friends would even have one.
Yeah, but that's the thing in Europe, like 80% of the cars are sticks.
Uh-huh.
So do you, if we could find a stick, would you teach me?
And we film it, Mario films it?
Yeah, I'll do that for you.
You can't get mad at Ryan.
Oh, yeah, I can.
He's doing you a huge favor.
He is doing me a favor.
That's true.
For practice, I think you need.
to go to one of our busy roundabouts because they love their roundabouts over there.
You're going to want to know how to drive a stick through that.
Yeah.
H-man, what's up?
Well, I got you a married player back in the Rupp day, Tom Parker.
All right.
Was that before?
We're trying to find the latest one.
Is that before Rick Robey?
Oh, definitely before Rick Roby.
The reason I remember so well, my dad used to feed her for free, and I used to go to all the
It sounds like that was illegal back then, though, wasn't it?
Oh, I know it was illegal.
One other thing he did, too, is he gave him golf balls.
So your dad would give Tom Parker food and golf balls.
Well, he didn't play golf with Tom Parker.
He played with Jim, Jim did with him and somebody else.
But that's about all he did.
But that's where the players ate a lot.
During Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Wait, you didn't say the place.
Perkins Pancake House.
Oh, Perkins'all.
Not the Perkins Pancake House now, but it's where they ate.
And Rupp used to make them come in and sign the book.
That's the way you kept up with them, you know, during the off-time.
Well, I appreciate the call.
Perkins Pancake House.
Sounds like some violations going on back here.
Sounds like A, we were breaking the rules.
And Drew B, I don't know that we want our guys all eating pancakes.
not sure that's the best to stay in shape, is it?
It's a lot of carbs.
I don't know if that would have worked for a lot of the strict diets we had,
but sometimes you've got break a rules in the past.
But if it's not breaking rules.
Yeah, the statute of limitations is hopefully.
Can't vacate those titles?
Yeah, hopefully pass.
Let's go to Steve.
What's up, Steve?
Hey, guys.
Can you hear me?
Yes, go ahead.
Okay, I've got three quick things.
My nephew was the one playing the call to post at Keenland the other day
when Pope and Williams walked by, and he said the UK fights on form.
Oh, that's awesome.
I have actually met and talked to on a one-to-one basis.
Every coach we have had who's won a national championship and none who hasn't,
and then I have a question.
So have you talked to Pope yet?
No, that's what I mean.
We'll find him, Shannon.
Like, we've got to have him win a title.
Yeah, well, I need to.
I haven't talked to him yet either.
But go ahead.
I have a question for you all.
If Richie comes, will he and his wife be able to enter the bed race?
It took a turn.
I appreciate the call.
I don't know.
It looks like this will be our first non-Michael Porter married player, Ryan, since Rick Robey.
Yeah, I can't think of any either.
Nobody else has suggested anybody since Roby other than if Michael Porter was in fact married.
Fun fact about him other than being married.
I really like the IQ you were getting
because I read a story about him.
He bought a bunch of old gumball machines
and sold duck food out of them by lakes.
Start a little duck food.
No, really.
He also can speak four languages, Shannon.
Wow.
Yeah.
Four languages.
That's a pretty good.
So, looks like we got a smart one.
We'll take a break.
Come back.
Hour number two.
