Wednesday, April the 3rd.
I am Matt Jones.
We are here at the KS Bar and Grill.
We didn't think we'd be, but we are for Wings Day,
dollar wings, 80-cent boneless wings all day long.
Me, Ryan, well, Ryan is not here.
Me and Drew, we will have, we have a special guest.
But first, the Clark's Pump and Shop phone lines 859-2-802287.
A Vision Auto Glass Text Machine is 772-745-254 in this edition, sponsored by the T.J. Smith-Law, it's called T.J.
I'll Make them Pay.
Drew, we decided, you know, we do the Fade This podcast, and we always enjoy it.
And we have with us on Fade This, a young man named Billy Rutledge, who is our, who is our producer on it.
and he's become such a hit that he's joining us here today.
Billy, how are you?
Good morning, Matt.
Good morning, Frank.
It's good to be here.
Yeah, that's tomorrow, by the way.
I'm ready.
I'm ready to be Frank with Franklin.
Yes.
But today is going to be an Ask Anything Wednesday.
So here's your chance.
I keep everywhere I go, I keep getting to ask questions about like, okay, Matt, what about this,
what about that?
You know, tell me.
So this is your chance when it comes to basketball, football, although I think most of your
questions will be basketball, but they can be any sport.
Ask anything Wednesday.
Drew and I will promise to answer as nicely and as honestly as we can.
I brought nothing but truth today.
I'm ready to answer any questions thrown our way.
I like getting off topic.
If anybody wants to, you know, hang a left away from sports and get another area, I'm always up for that too.
You're always up for that.
But if you have questions about the season, they're all that's going on with the staff.
Now's the time to answer it.
I would say, Drew, this is, well, Billy, both of you, this is the most dressed up I've ever been for a regular.
show that we've had. I'm wearing a full suit with a tie.
It didn't feel natural this morning, ironing like dress clothes before going to do KSR.
I've never done that in year 15 now.
We're leaving right after the show to go to Shannon's grandmother's funeral, and you're
dressed all in black. You look a little bit like Johnny Cash.
Oh, that's what you're supposed to do, right? Is black?
Well, you can, but I mean, but you're wearing a black shirt.
Yes, I'm all black, actually, even down to the shoes.
You've got a...
Do you have anything on it with any...
You literally are.
I got the black socks.
So you have black shoes, black socks, black pants, black shirt.
Are you going to wear a black jacket?
No, no, no jacket today.
No jacket.
No, just going the button down.
Wow.
That is, you look like, you do look like Johnny Cash.
Well, just call me Johnny.
Drew, are you closing the car?
They are.
I've got my pants on.
I didn't feel like I needed to wear a dress shirt to the show here.
but yes, it's in the car.
So you're going to change in the car on our drive?
I mean, I could put it on in one second before I get in the car.
Okay.
It won't take too long.
I was thinking when I put this suit on, I do not remember the last time I wore the suit.
This was back when I was on television.
I had to wear a suit every day.
And this is like kind of a gray suit, so you know you don't wear it to like Keenland.
Right.
So I cannot remember the last time I wore it.
It's probably been four years since I've had these clothes on.
You say that you used to wear a suit every day for your television show,
so you know how to tie a tie, you know, how to do all that?
Well, I didn't do a tie.
I went no tie.
But I have, Drew, it was weird to get back into this world.
I mean, both when I was a lawyer and on television, you had to wear a tie.
Now I dress horribly.
And so it's odd getting back to it.
I probably wear elastic waistbands most days, pants or shorts.
But I still keep a few nice things when I need them.
I have noticed I've dropped a few pounds since I bought.
my black and navy suits.
Those can't be worn anymore.
Oh, though they're out.
They're gone.
You can find a good Taylor probably.
I didn't know I shrunk that much, but I put it on like, did someone switch these out?
So I need to go shopping.
I've learned, but I was still had enough for today.
I have one jacket that is my test my fitness level jacket.
Because when I put it on, you know, when I got it,
Beaumani Jones told me once.
He was like, if you ever have the ability, at least buy one.
suit that is tailored because he was like you will feel like a million bucks in it right
okay and he's right about that now that's expensive but it is so i have one and when i put that
jacket on that's how i know where i am on the weight scale so it's it's actually pretty good today
but i put it on like two months ago and that was when i thought time to get back to the trainer
i like that look good feel good a little pushing and poland always helps with that too and uh no nerd
gummies today so you can fit in all that. I've stopped eating those for a while. Really?
Candy's where it gets you. Oh, yeah. Candy is where you put on weight, in my opinion.
And I was in part because I said I liked it and every single person I met would bring me bags of it.
There was a time I had 16 bags of nerd gummies in my house. And when they're there, Drew, you've got to eat them.
You're not going to not eat them. So you're talking to a guy who, let me look at the clock. It has not been 11 hours since I took down a bag of nerds gummies.
Had some in bed last night.
Now, that's when you know. So I might be getting back.
into those suits soon. That's why I didn't throw them out. When you eat candy in bed,
listen, that's when you know, that's, see, you're shaking your head, sir, that's when you know
things aren't going on when, when you're eating candy or ice cream in bed, that's a double whammy
of getting big. I hosted Easter this year, and we, family loves to bring the Easter candy,
and they play the hits. I have all, my candy selection is on point right now, and I just couldn't resist
at about 1130. Well, we, we're going to Shannon's, we're going to the, we're going to the,
funeral it's in Bullitt County this will be this first time you ever been to Bullitt
First time yes first time you've ever you know for to be as close to Louisville as it is I've
I've only been a handful of time I've only been to Mount Washington which is where we're going
like once it's part of that again part of the mystery of Shannon like I've been to everybody
else's home but like you just we know we never have you ever seen his house like have you
ever been over for I went at that I went one time to he had picked up something for me
No, I mean, I've never been to his house.
That's amazing.
I mean, you've been together for like 12 years.
But I have a friend from college.
I've talked about this with Drew.
Drew knows who I'm talking about, who I've been good friends with since I was 18.
Never met his family.
Never seen where he lived.
Think about that.
I've known him since I was 18.
Never met his parents.
Never met his brother.
Never been in a house he's ever occupied.
So some people are just like that, Drew.
Shannon's kind of like that.
Sure not getting catfished on that one.
Don't know what Shannon drives.
If you took me to Louisville right now, I don't know what Shannon drives.
He goes to the I heart car when I see him.
But if you took me to Louisville right now and dropped me off without a phone and said,
fine, Shannon, I wouldn't know what to do.
I don't know what part of town he lives in.
Shannon does drive the eye heart car wherever he gets a chance.
My man does not want to use gas.
He is in the eye heart car everywhere we go.
But anyway, we'll be heading there.
And I know we will pass on everybody I know on the show's prayers.
All right.
So let's talk about the big news from yesterday.
I reported and then some other people agreed that it is unlikely, Drew,
that there will be significant staff changes and there might be no staff on the basketball staff.
They may run it back with the same group, Orlando Chin, Welsh, Martin, Bruiser Flint,
and then Chris Woolard is head of basketball operations.
I was very surprised.
I mean, my assumption was going to be, well, I'll just tell you,
I thought Kentucky would keep Orlando Antigua.
I thought they'd keep Martin and Welsh.
And I thought there was a good chance the other guys were replaced.
I'm really surprised.
I'm not like angry.
Like ultimately, I guess the theory is Cal gets another ride, so let him do it his way.
But it is a big surprise to me, to be honest with you.
There was even whispers of changes before they lost to Oakland, just that Cal might do something this summer
before it even went really bad in the NCAA tournament.
Like you said, it's his legacy in front of him, and he has to build the staff around him,
and he knows how those guys have been the last three, four years when it hasn't been good.
So if he trusts them to run it back, that will fall on him, not me.
In my seat over here, I would think you need something different just because the defense has been so bad,
and you're talking about making these changes of the game's different.
But if he doesn't go that route, you know, I think the fans all look at the time.
that like well that's on another thing on cows plate heading into this next year it would just
feels like you want to do i mean i feels like you'd want to do something different like
just for p r just because like it's clear this hasn't worked don't we want to try something
different i mean i you know i i i hate how this looks like it's going to be so let me give me
a perfect example. Last night's a McDonald's All-American game. And in the years past, I've watched,
if not all of them, most of them. We had Boogie Flan play Carter Knox and Jaden Quaintens.
I did not see it. Now, I had some other things I had to do, so I couldn't have watched it either way.
But I looked at it this morning, and I saw Boogie Flan looks like he played pretty well. He hit the
shot that ended up winning the putback that ended up winning the game. Jaden Quaintens had some moments.
Carter Knox had some moments.
The kid going to Rutgers looks awesome.
And I read all that.
But like, I kind of wonder as a fan base, are we excited?
Like, in years past, you would see dudes like ball in the McDonald's game and you'd go,
there we go.
Like, there's another group.
Do you think fans are excited?
I'll just be honest.
I was trying to, I'm not going to be down on those kids because it's none of this is their fault.
But it's hard to get excited.
excited about a new group?
Well, not yet.
I mean, the, if it looks like this.
Well, probably just the season about to start and, you know, the rhetoric ramping up.
But what will make you, let me put it a different way.
What will make you optimistic?
I like, contrary to Goeber's on Twitter, I like to be optimistic.
Optimism is a much more fun emotion than pessimism, right?
what was it going to take you to be optimistic about next year?
Well, I thought we were going to see some change.
I thought that, you know, we were going to stop beating our head against the wall.
Cal might talk to the media a little bit more.
You might see a staffer at the Kentucky State Championship game for Travis Perry.
Okay, now you're being pessimistic.
What will it take for you to be optimistic?
Change.
Any kind of change.
A change that's different from the formula that we've seen fail the last five years.
Is there something that would make you optimistic?
Maybe some guys back.
I mean, if Reed Shepherd comes back,
well, I think that would make.
Or Big Z.
Reed Shepherd would be the one that I think every single person would be optimistic.
I, you know, I still, I'll believe that when I see it.
What if, what if, let me give you a potential realistic standard.
And would you be optimistic?
If DJ Wagner, a do and a big, came back,
join these freshmen and you got one or two good dudes in the portal.
You optimistic about next year?
I would say I would have some optimism.
I won't be half as optimistic as I was last year.
Would you be optimistic?
I think I'd be starting to be a little optimistic
because you're seeing some change when it comes to not just relying on freshmen
and two graduate seniors as your players.
So for you guys, a couple dudes coming back is the thing.
Because that shows me the culture is changing a little bit.
Okay.
But if it's just the reset button with freshmen that we don't think are going to be as good as last year as freshman,
I mean, it's hard to get excited about it.
I mean, I watched that game last night.
Yeah, you did.
Or I watched the replay this morning, kind of fast-forward through commercials.
And I don't want to take away from what they're doing, but I'm sitting there going,
DJ Wagner was the MVP last year.
He was.
And the game wager.
I mean, they were the stars of the game last year.
And it didn't translate.
So even though I was excited when Quentin's made some plays, he was pretty good defensively.
I enjoyed seeing that.
The back of my head's like,
what does that mean nothing to Kentucky?
I'm glad Quaiton that's going to be here two years.
That is actually a part.
Because, you know, his age is such that he can't go to the draft after a year.
So, but again, in the portal era,
he's going to be somewhere two years.
Hopefully it's here two years.
But I just wonder, that's a good question for fans, too.
Like, what is it that makes you guys excited?
Because I, you know,
I do not want to spend now until November.
Like negative.
But at the same time,
the staff thing is a big thing to me.
I mean, I just think the staff has,
you know, Cal's late game coaching substitution patterns,
that's all on him.
Right, that's all on him.
I don't put that on the staff.
But, you know, as Frank said,
there's a couple dudes who just weren't doing what there's.
I mean, it just, it's true.
And people can ignore that and not, and that's fine.
If you want to not think that's true, that's fine.
But it is true.
And everybody around the program knows it.
I've talked to everyone I know to talk to.
And whether they love Cal, and I have some friends who love Cal,
and I have some friends who really want him going.
They all have the same view.
I cannot believe he's bringing in the hell of this thing.
I mean, like, no one can believe it.
If that ends up being true, and again, maybe that'll change.
It changed last week.
three dudes we're not going to be here.
Well, now it's changed. Maybe he'll change again.
That just shocks me.
But I just don't know when he did that thing with Mitch,
and he's talking about how we're going to change,
and I know it's only been a few weeks.
He has plenty of time to still make changes.
So far it doesn't seem like there's much changes at all, really.
And I know the portal's just getting started.
I'm not trying to criticize him before he even gets a chance to do stuff,
but staff or.
But we took two guys in the portal last year.
We had three dudes return last year.
Like, I don't, you know,
Is that, I don't know that that's change, but we'll see.
859-28027.
Ask any questions you want.
We got the man in black here, Billy Rutledge.
We got Drew Franklin.
We are here at KS Bar.
It is Wingsday.
We'll be right back.
Kentucky Sports Radio.
Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio.
I like her to Barry.
Drew said, Drew.
Billy said that he thought he looked like Keanu Reeves.
I love that your confidence has never days.
It's, it is the first day I met you.
you said you could get Jennifer Lawrence to give you her phone number.
Today you're telling me that you look like Keanu Reeves.
I do love that you're kind.
You, I actually envy your confidence.
Do you have the confidence you project in real life?
I think I do.
It's switched off a little bit after the first few episodes of Fade This, honestly.
It started doubting myself a little bit when I couldn't get somebody on the phone.
But besides that, we slick back the hair and we're confident every day.
Oh, no, no.
I think people like you on Fade This more than they.
they've ever liked you before.
Really?
Oh,
don't you think so,
Drew?
Yeah, definitely.
I mean, and you do a great job of calling random states.
The turkey hunter,
the turkey hunter said to me that he thinks Fade this is the best thing KSR's ever done.
And he says,
he thinks you're a big part of that.
And like,
he's a harsh critic.
Wow.
Well,
and I see the text.
Matt's not wrong.
I'm not kidding.
Lots of positive Billy feedback after every episode.
There is more Billy positive feedback.
I think they like you,
Billy,
I think people think you're like trying to be too confident, but you're you in that.
But actually, you are confident.
You literally, during the break, told me you look like Keanu Reeves.
Well, we actually need to talk about how that whole conversation went.
I kind of caught in half of it.
You were asking him who called him that?
And he replied, he said, it's the hair.
And you're like, who said it?
And then we learned no one said it.
No one said it.
You just said it.
You just said you look like Keanu Reeves.
I mean, again, like, okay, so I'm the guy that if I were to go out and be interested in a woman,
and I tried to hit on her, and she turned me down.
I couldn't hit on somebody again for like a month.
I feel like Billy's a guy that goes up,
throws nine strikeouts, gets nine strikeouts,
he still believes he's hitting a home run.
I actually, I envy that.
I'm not kidding you.
I think that's like, good for you.
He's the Thomas Edison of hitting on women.
All those nose are just steps along the way.
I'm not saying he's hitting on women.
But you just have that kind of like that about you.
Well, I'm happily engaged, but you know what?
If you strike out, you've got to get back to the plate and show that you belong there.
And that's what I feel like I do every day.
Well, you do.
You did a great job.
Before we get the phones, ask anything Wednesday.
One person writes, Matt, I saw on Twitter, Caliperi turned you down to come on the show.
Did you really think he was going to do it?
No, I didn't.
But here's, so people who listen to this show know this.
On Twitter, it took a life of its own because, again, people who don't listen, make assumptions.
I asked him and wanted to give the answer
just because I'm sort of tired of people going,
well, do you even ask him to come on?
I wanted to ask him through the official route.
Call the university, do what every other show would do.
Call the University of Kentucky.
Say, can I have John Cowell?
Because it used to be, I just call, hey man, Cal,
you think you can do it, right?
I'll call Mark or Vince directly
or call the football contact.
It's like, I wanted to go through the official channels,
the person said, we'll see what we can do,
and then came back and said, no.
I did not expect him to do it,
but I wanted to be official about it
so that, like, it's known we tried,
and that's that.
I'm not mad about it.
I assumed he wouldn't,
but that's why I did it that way.
You least got to show that you made the effort
and went through the proper avenue to ask.
Yeah.
Do you want me to ask today?
I think the asking is probably done for a while.
Well, the pre-show has an ask in as well,
so hopefully that door is still open.
What if Keanu here gets even when we don't?
I'll tell you what.
I'll skip Bill Simmons for the...
Did you listen to the show?
He had a big pre-show this morning.
I'm driving over and I'm like, how do I know this voice?
Was that Tom Crean?
Tom Crean?
Tom Crean.
Davey Crean.
I love you and Tom Crean are friends.
Kind of some breaking news on there today too, right, Billy?
Didn't he kind of mention that the Indiana series?
Oh.
Indiana Kentucky?
Well, yeah, he said that Calipari wanted it to come back.
and that it just, the Indiana administration did not want to attend the tournament that Kentucky has with Ohio State and North Carolina.
That rivalry was going to be renewed.
Oh, so they want, so they invited Indiana in instead of Ohio State.
And Indiana's administration said no.
You kind of blame them.
That's interesting.
I always thought Indiana would be better for that series than Ohio State.
That's interesting that that ended up happening.
By the way, a lot of whispers out there from people that Tennessee, Matthew Mitchell.
What would that mean?
Yeah.
There's a lot of Knoxville scuttlebutt about that.
I have no idea.
I have no idea I haven't talked to Matthew, and it's not, but there's some of the Knoxville
radio shows are saying.
So that would be interesting if that ends up happening like that.
Who's up first?
Paul is up first.
Paul, go ahead, Paul.
Hey, guys.
So two questions.
Do you, you said that Mitch went in there with a list of demands.
do you think Cal has just said appeased him at the time and now has gone back and said
hey you're just going to deal with it I'm not changing I have no idea to be honest with you
I think there were things that Mitch wanted to see changed and I think there were
agreements about most of those maybe one or two they were still disagreements but it's hard
for me to answer. I mean, you can assume by me thinking there were going to be staff changes,
why I thought that. But as to where we are right now, I think I would be, I'd be lying if I said
I knew how we got to this spot. I will tell you, what is this Wednesday? I think everyone on
Friday went off to their weekends, assuming we were going to see staff changes by Monday or Tuesday.
That's clearly not happened. How we got to that point, to be honest with you, I don't know the
answer to that.
Okay. Well, in my opinion, I mean, the way that you guys have talked about how, you know, being honest that you think there needs to be a change, and now with this, to me, just solidifies that he's not going to change. It's just going to be the same thing again.
And in your opinion, I mean, what do you feel like at the end of next season where this program goes?
I don't know. I mean, I don't know. I appreciate the call. I think for all of our.
sakes. It needs to, you know, no matter what happens after that, we need this year to be good, Drew,
but I have no idea. I mean, first of all, how could you have an idea? We have no idea what the
roster is going to be, right? We have no idea. We have no idea how good. I mean, just think about
the freshman class. Whatever you think, Boogie Flan, Carter Knox, Billy Richmond, Jaden Quentin,
Sompto Surreal, and Travis Perry are going to be. Just think about last year's class. Everything
thing we thought about those guys was almost the opposite.
The three highest touted guys actually didn't have great years until the end.
Justin Edwards played pretty well.
DJ was okay.
Reed Shepard and Rob Dillingham were the two best guys.
So I have no idea.
Here's one thing I would say.
We don't have anybody in the class next year, Drew, that's can't miss.
Right?
Correct.
And I enjoyed watching Boogie Flynn.
I think he'll be good, but they're still going to need some portal guard.
That can't be your main guard going into next year if they're not able to get guys.
back from this team.
Yeah, I think most of the guys we get in the portal will be guards, don't you?
I hope so.
It's good as he looked.
I mean, you're going to need more.
Well, we just, I mean, do we have any shooters right now?
And he's not a very good shooter.
I mean, Travis Perry, but we don't have any minutes.
Travis Perry is the one shooter.
Like, they're going to have to go get, they're going to have to go get shooters.
Drew Franklin, Matt Jones, Keanu Reeves.
We will take a break.
Be right back.
It's Ask Anything Wednesday here at KS.
Kentucky Sports Radio.
Welcome back, Techie Sports Radio, here at KSbar.
open 11 o'clock wings day dollar wings member i'm doing my trivia tonight i'm about four questions
short billy drew yeah you all got to help me on the drive all right we're gonna have to help me
come up with the final question we'll play a trivia again that's what uh that's one of the things i want
you all's your all's job is uh one person writes matt here's a question have any tv show offers
come up since hey kentucky and will we ever have a video simulcast of ksr the radio show uh yes
I've had a few TV's hard.
I'm just not, it's just another job.
I don't know that I want anytime soon.
Maybe someday.
We are, I announced this earlier this week, but we have a new person starting at KSR Monday.
He's going to be our social media guru, but he's also going to help us have more video of the show.
So you're going to get to see how terribly we are dressed more often as we are going to have more video on the show.
I don't think we'll live stream it.
But we will have clips and videos and all that, and he starts, I think I can announce him tomorrow.
But I'm very much looking forward to it.
He's a great dude, and I think he's going to.
We need some young energy.
Billy's the youngest one we have, and he's Keanu Reeves.
So we need this is a young guy, and he's going to, I think, do a really, really good job.
Ready to get on the TikTok?
Ready to do a little dance?
Here's what I'm doing with TikTok.
I'm just handing it to him just so people know I'm not running my TikTok.
I'm handing it to him and say,
you're in charge of my TikTok.
And if he posts something stupid, it's him.
I'm not doing it because I don't know how to do it.
You know, I discovered the Duke players TikTok.
Oh, yeah.
McCain.
Yeah.
Actually, I want to do this in a second.
Rick, do you have the video I sent yesterday, right?
That's right.
Okay.
Pull it up in a minute and I'll play it because we'll talk about this in a second.
All right.
Who's up next?
Got Jim up next.
Jim, go ahead, Jim. Ask anything Wednesday.
It's a question of all of you.
I have a theory that the COVID years and the NIL has pushed this new trend
in the older teams being the ones that's in the finals and all this.
Do you feel that we're going to be switching as this all wears down and we actually have four-year
seniors that we're going to go back to swing into the freshmen?
Yeah, I don't know.
I mean, so Caliperi would say you're right.
Okay, so Cala Perry Drew would probably say, look, the reason all these old teams are winning is COVID gave another year and there's a ton of fifth years and so everybody's old.
And he would probably say, soon as those guys get out and next year's their last year, right, then that's going to be it.
Maybe. I think the counter to that would be, though, now people can stay longer and can be successful.
So I appreciate the call. Here's the counter, and this is what I believe.
now that the portal exists and you can go pick the mid-major guys you want and they don't have to sit out, I think we're staying old.
Because think of it like you're gambling in Vegas.
I go look at high school kids.
There are some chances to win big odds.
There are also some big failures, right?
But I consider mid-majors like blackjack, right?
If I see a dude who scored 21 a game at Northern Colorado, it's not a crazy.
bet to think he'll be pretty good in the SEC.
Right? It's not a crazy
bet to look at a kid that was
first team all conference and go,
maybe that'll work here. So I
think you're actually getting better odds
at your bets with mid-majors, which I think
is going to make schools do it more, which I think
is going to leave college basketball
old. What do you think? Completely agree.
I even thought that going into this season.
It's the transfer portal. It's not
the COVID players we keep talking about.
They're all at different schools.
They get to their senior year,
and they all meet up at a Florida or in Arkansas or a Baylor,
and suddenly you have three guys that were never going to be on a team that was that good
because they were kind of the star where they were.
And now they've linked up at a bigger school with better coaching,
better opportunities, playing a better schedule,
and that's not going anywhere.
I don't think when he talks about the 27-year-olds,
how many 27-year-olds are there?
There's no 27-year-olds.
There's some 24 and 25-year-olds.
How many of those are truly making a difference?
Not many.
When Kentucky had Trey Mitchell and Antonio Reeves,
one year younger than Jack Golky.
Did that Golky's extra year
make that big of a difference? No.
I think that the portal has changed everything,
not the extra COVID year.
You know, Cal used to always talk about
when guys come to college, they're so young,
they've never lived on their own.
There's like a lot of just life changes
that occur when you're 18 years old.
Think about how you were like when you were 18.
You're away from home.
And then he's doing all that and trying to then get them
to a national title.
The 21-year-old kid coming from northern Colorado or Illinois
State, you don't have to worry about any of that. You've seen whether or not he can adjust to college.
You've seen what kind of teammate he is. You've seen what kind of human being he is.
So, you know, the NBA many years ago decided to stop picking kids out of high school.
The main reason was they said this is too big a gamble to give these 18-year-olds
$20 million and we don't even know what's going to happen. They said one year of college
gives us more insight. What I think colleges are going to say is three years at Weber State
gives me a lot more insight than high school in AAU,
and I'm just going to do that.
You guys mentioned the portal NIL is going to keep fringe first-round draft picks there.
Yes.
And you also saw who played well in Kentucky's NCAA tournament games.
It was Antonio Reeves and Trey Mitchell.
Those are guys that have been on that stage before.
Zach Eadie comes back to college because of Nile.
They are in the final four because Zach Eadie got in IL,
and it was better for him to do that than go be a second round pick.
now he's probably going to be a lottery pick.
So it ended up being a great decision.
So I agree with that, Billy.
I think NIL's part of it too.
And some of it's just they've already been in school.
They're old.
They're adults.
They don't need to have their handheld all the time like a freshman would.
They've already lost conference tournament games.
They've picked themselves up for the next year.
They've lost plenty of games.
They've not made the NCAA tournament.
They have all these things they've already experienced and been through.
And then they're in their fourth year and they're able to transfer to a big school with bigger opportunities.
And they've already gone through a lot already.
even was it a mid-major.
So I still think you're going to see gambles on high school kids.
I just don't think you're going to see as many.
And here's what's also going to happen.
A kid that a few years ago would have gone to Florida is now going to end up in a school like Western.
Yeah.
And they'll play a year or two and be good and leave.
But now you're going to see some of these small schools get kids that were freshmen
that they would have never gotten before because the big schools are going to be getting the older guys.
It's going to be like almost like a minor league system.
It's a revolving door at times, but also creates parity, I think, in college basketball.
I think it creates a ton more parity because just take the women's team with Kentucky.
If this were five years ago, Kenny Brooks, it would take him four years to rebuild this team.
He can rebuild it overnight.
He can get his kid that was an all-American.
Her name is Georgia Amor or whatever.
He can get her to come, and we might be good next year, right?
That wouldn't have happened before.
Who's next?
Dale is up next.
Go ahead, Dale.
Hey, Matt.
I saw where Brony James entered the transfer portal,
just want to get your thoughts.
So hang out with.
Would you want Brony?
So Brony is an interesting question because, all right,
we don't even know how good he is because, you know,
unfortunately he had his health issue,
so we don't even know how good he is.
So let's just say LeBron calls up Cal and says,
I want Brony on the team next year.
If your Cal, do you say yes or do you say no?
I'm certainly considering it.
I mean, I've got to look at what I have.
I'm not just going to keep piling it up because part of the problem is, you know,
but what are you doing?
You got to make a choice.
I would take Brony James if I needed a guard.
So you would take Brody.
Would you take Brony in the portal?
I would not.
I think it's too much of a circus.
I'm going to say no, but not because of the circus.
Like, I like the circus.
The circus is Kentucky basketball.
I'm taking him because I wouldn't take him because we already got too many guys like that.
I mean, to be honest with you,
he's basically a seventh freshman
because he only played at, what, half the season?
And he didn't.
I mean, he was the eighth, seventh, eighth man on a bad team.
So to me, if I'm getting dudes out of the portal,
Drew, I think there are better bets than Bronny.
Yeah.
I'm also going into this, and I don't think Kentucky would do this.
I have six freshmen, and I'll look at them,
and I say, I love you, excited to have you.
I'm bringing a lot of people, and I'm sorry.
the best will play is how I would approach you.
You think I would do that?
I don't think that's going to happen.
But I would be done with people having expectations coming in.
Yeah, I'm worried about that because he's got six dudes, five of whom I'm sure believe
they're getting a ton of minutes.
I don't know what Travis Perry believes.
Maybe he believes that too.
He can't play all those guys.
If he plays all those guys, we're not going to be good.
You know, I asked Tom Crean this morning if he thought the one and done era was over.
And what do he say?
He said no.
obviously it's about like supplementing those young guys with the veterans and but you can supplement three more than you can supplement six that I think that was his point as well is that you know you cannot be an entire roster of freshman as you've seen what was the stat three freshmen starting in the suite 16 in the NCAA tournament or something like that so the game has changed I think it's absolutely evolved and when I talk about change and wanting to see that from that staff is Cal going to change in that way and I kind of think it's too late I think it's I kind of think it's too late
to do for next year because those guys are already coming.
He's not going to look at Billy Richmond and say don't come.
He's not.
No.
I mean, those are his boys.
He said after we lost to Oakland, I'm not changing my freshman thing.
That's what gets me more than anything about any of this is he said one sentence
after the Oakland game, someone said what happened to this team being built for March?
Can't remember who asked.
It was a good question.
I think it was someone with the Hill Leader.
And he's like, well, they're freshmen.
You don't know how they'll respond in March.
And then I thought, well, if you don't know how they'll respond in March, and then I thought, well,
if you don't know how they're going to respond, then what are we doing?
Well, he's going to roll the dice every March?
That's got to be the mindset change.
And if I'm Mitch Barnhart, this is what I'm saying to Cal.
We need you to now build these teams to win in March.
You build them the way you want to build them.
But you can't just say we're built for March.
We actually have to be built for March.
And building for March is not all these young dudes.
It's not.
Like, it's changed.
I think his first 10 years here, pre-transfer portal, pre-NIL,
you could win with,
You know how I know?
Because he did.
And then told us that he did.
I don't know if you can do that now.
Maybe you can, but they better be really good.
They better be Anthony Davis.
They cannot be, well, they can't be a minus.
They got to be A.
Well, they obviously have to be better than last year's group because he said we lost because we didn't know how freshmen responds.
And let me also say, for people who think we can.
win with freshmen. We had
the freshman of the year and
probably the second place freshman of the
year. Just remember that. We had
the dude who, Reacheper just one freshman
of the year. And Rob Dillingham probably
came in second. So we had
the senior All-American next year. So we had the two top
freshmen in the country last year
and we lost the Oakland.

Very back, KS.R.
Welcome back, Tucky Sports Radio, here at KS Bar and Grill.
I hope you got your trivia team ready for tonight.
I had a couple questions last night I really like.
This one's been hard, though.
It's getting harder.
There's only so many questions out there in the world.
You run out of questions?
Yeah, I mean, there's only so much, like, you run out of things you can ask.
And I still got a couple more qualifiers and the finals to do.
Billy, how old are you?
I'm 28.
So you're the youngest person associated with us.
By far.
this guy did you just say by far you want to you want invited back Friday yes please
alright confidence 20 here's the thing here's the thing this is bad when you go online and
everyone is talking about something Drew I'm sure this is happening to you and you have no idea
with her dog yeah first thing happened like well a couple days ago there's this woman
that's on so all of a sudden on every picture I see and she's like a new spokeswoman for
something. Her name's Sabrina Carpenter.
Oh, yeah, I know, Sabrina.
See? She's been opening for Taylor Swift.
I knew none of that, right?
Everybody's like, can you believe Sabrina Carpenter is the new spokeswoman for Skims?
And I was like, I just learned what Skims was.
Slow down.
Still writing notes.
Everybody slow down.
I don't know who Sabrina Carpenter is.
And then I look, she's got 32 million followers on Instagram.
32 million followers.
I've never heard of this person.
Apparently, she's a singer, right?
Yes.
Opening for Taylor Swift.
So that made me feel bad.
Then Duke's playing NC State.
NC State's winning, right?
By the way, NC State Duke game,
one of the highest ranked college basketball games in like 20 years.
Everybody who says the sports dying,
15 million people watched NC State Duke.
That's more people than watched every game of the NBA finals,
every game of the World Series, the Masters, everything.
So stop saying college basketball is dead.
It's not dead.
But, you know, Jared McCain or McLean is on.
He's on Duke.
He's like a big TikTok guy, right?
And I start seeing everybody tweeting out,
I'm two days into college and I'm three buckets behind.
And I'm like, I have no, what?
Why is everybody saying this?
I hadn't, do you, would you have known what that meant?
I don't even know the buckets.
Do you know what that mean?
So apparently there was a song that went viral on TikTok.
Play the song, Rick.
I'm two days in college and I'm three.
lectures behind.
Here's this guy.
Let's name him calling.
He says he wants to be mine.
But it doesn't really sit with me quite right because he doesn't really like the things
I like.
And I keep accident and like of myself out of my dorm in the middle of the night.
Okay, I've never heard that.
You ever heard that?
I have heard that, yeah.
Okay, so that like went viral.
So then I guess Jared McCain, he did a video of him singing it.
And then he sang it in front of the Cameron Crazes before the North Carolina game.
There's a video of him.
He looks.
in front of the Cameron crazy
at Game Day and goes, you know, I'm
two days into college and I'm three
lectures behind. And like they're all cheering.
Billy, I knew none
of it. I never heard any of it.
And it felt like, I was like, everyone
has just, Drew, left me
behind. Just like she's behind
on her lectures, I'm behind on everything
that's happening in the world. Yeah, Jared
McCain, big TikToker.
I mean,
do your thing. If you're at Kentucky,
I would almost have to, like, delete
talk to not actually see it's a lot it is a lot it's a lot especially like doing it
in madness you know their song that we make fun of their brother it's not even like uh it and he was
and he does it little and like he's sitting there go i'm two days out to color and he's singing it like
he's an opera singer and i just between him and sabrina carpenter i just felt like you know what
we got to go hire somebody else i can't do this i can't do i don't know any of this i didn't
know you were going to bring up sabrina carpenter today last night i saw
She's got skims or whatever.
I did the exact same thing you did.
I said, I don't know this person.
Let's see who she is.
I'm pretty sure I've seen at least a couple of her movies.
Get her Instagram profile and she's on a stage.
And I was like, oh, it looks like she must sing and not do movies.
And I'm like, I just have to accept.
I don't know what's going on in the world anymore.
How could I not know who this person?
Literally, she was the number one trend on Twitter.
People like, I can't believe she's doing skims.
And I was literally like, I don't know who that is.
And I was so proud of myself for a couple weeks ago knowing what skims was.
And I had to unfollow TMZ on Twitter because it's like roller skate broke up with bumper pull over something.
I'm like, I don't know, any of these people or anything you're talking about.
Rob Dillingham with skims, right?
I mean, he was this.
Yeah, that's how I knew what it was.
Yeah.
Was Rob Dilligan.
All right, who's next?
Got Joseph up next.
Joseph.
Go ahead, Joseph.
Hey, Matt, I appreciate you taking my call.
I keep seeing this trend on Twitter that this team could have used Oscar Sheewe.
Yeah, no.
But I, okay, so that's what I was going to ask you.
I heard some of the things that went on with those teams, the two Oscar teams.
Now that everyone has gone from those rosters, can we talk about some of the lockerers?
Well, I don't, I mean, I just leave it at this.
I don't blame Oscar in particular.
I just, in the first Oscar team, I think was fine.
The one that lost to St. Peter's, I'd love to see a.
30 for 30 of what happened the day of the St. Peter's game?
Yes.
Because there are some wild stories about what happened that day leading up to the game,
and I don't know what's true and what's not.
But I think in general, that team got along.
So I don't think, but there's no doubt.
Last year's team was a chemistry disaster.
Who you ask?
Yeah, I mean, I think here's what's fair to say.
I think Severe Wheeler had a group.
Oscar was kind of his alone shark by himself.
Cal was in a weird place that year.
Kaysen Wallace was silent, and so the best player wasn't really a leader because he was just silent.
That man didn't speak.
He didn't speak.
So you had this thing where the best player doesn't speak, or the best guard.
Oscar is doing his own thing.
Severe's doing his own thing.
Cal is losing it a lot, yelling at him, and like it just didn't work.
It just didn't work.
Like they were all over the place last year.
So why?
I think it just depends on who you ask,
but I think it's pretty clear, Drew,
from a chemistry perspective,
that team was all over the place.
Yeah, definitely.
I think a lot of it went to some of the best players
weren't playing when they should have.
It started there, too, with some of those rosters.
It was just a lot.
It was just a lot.
So that's the best I can probably do.
We'll take a break.
Come back.
Hour number two.
This is KSR.
