Welcome back hour number two, Kentucky Sports Radio, 859-2-80-2287. The text machine is 772-744-5254. Let's talk about, we got folks you can come on in for lunch, but I want to talk about the weekend ahead.
Starting point is 00:02:57 There's a lot of stuff going on. All right, so first of all, UK baseball. They play tonight at 630, is that right? Tomorrow at 4 and Sunday at 2. They are now ranked, what, 17th in the country? They are projected to be a host for one of the regionals. They play Alabama. Now, if they want to win the SEC, because they still have hard games ahead,
Starting point is 00:03:20 if they want to win the SEC, this is a series they need to win. They need to take two of three here against Alabama, and if they do, that's a great opportunity for them. So those games are in Lexington. Be awesome to have a crowd. I'm probably going tomorrow. I'm going to try to go to the games tomorrow. That one's at two, not four.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Two. All right. I'm glad. If I'd shown up at four, it would be almost over. So I'm going to go at two, and I'm looking forward to that. Then Keenland starts today. Today. The bluegrass stakes is tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:03:50 Netflix is there. 100th running of the bluegrass stakes. The hundredth running of the bluegrass stakes. What's the weather? The weather's not good day. It's going to be cold. Burgoo season at Keenland. I'm sorry to hear.
Starting point is 00:04:01 hear that. Also, lots of changes at Keenland. What's happening? The admissions booths, got rid of those, you scan yourself in. Those nice people will still be there to help. You mean there's no admission booth? I mean, they've changed. I haven't seen it myself. I don't know what to expect, but they've been promoting that you have your stuff ready
Starting point is 00:04:17 to scan it. And those nice people that work through will still be around to help. But that's changed, then the parking's changed a little bit too. All the paved parking, you need a permit now because they're building that big paddock. So there's a lot of construction in the entrance. Just to let people, once you get inside, it's the same Keelanlin you love, but it's a little different while they're building that big paddock building.
Starting point is 00:04:34 I didn't know that. All right. Then the Reds have a home series against the Mets. The Mets stink. So we Reds, we need to win two of three at least. I'm going to probably go tonight. It's going to be cold. I'm not looking forward to how cold it's going to be.
Starting point is 00:04:48 How are balling, though. Four and two. It's all right. I mean, you're Reds. You can't complain about four and two. Hunter Green tonight. I think I hate Nick Martinez. He's pitching tomorrow night.
Starting point is 00:04:58 He's only pitched once for the Reds. And to be fair, I didn't know who he was before, but he just has a thing about him. I just have a feeling he's going to stink, Billy. Well, I'm glad it's in Cincinnati. I don't know if you saw the video of the Mets Stadium the other day. I mean, they've already checked out. That's one of the saddest things I've ever seen. Did you hear the announcer?
Starting point is 00:05:13 No. He was like, it's pouring rain, we're 0 and 5 and no one's here. This must be the low point. That's what he said. That was the team announcer said that. That's like, ooh, there's still 156 games to go, my mom. man, it's going to be a long time for you. Well, as a Mets hater, I like hearing that.
Starting point is 00:05:34 That's a division rival, but I'm a little surprised. That's a good ballpark and usually decent fan-based. All right. So then KS. Barr. I've got a few things. All right. So if you don't come back KS. Bar this weekend, you're probably a communist sympathizer.
Starting point is 00:05:47 So you start tonight, the win. That's our new ad campaign. If you don't come this weekend, you're a communist sympathizer. Tonight, You got women's basketball. All right, we're going to have on the women's final four and UK baseball at the same time, right? So they'll both be on. You can watch the UK baseball.
Starting point is 00:06:09 You can watch Caitlin versus Page. That's tonight. Tomorrow, all day. Think of what all is going on. UK baseball at two. Final four at six. We're going to have WrestleMania at eight. Now, I asked you for people if you were going to come watch WrestleMania.
Starting point is 00:06:23 About 40 of you wrote me and said yes. If you don't show up and we got that WrestleMania, I'm coming to your. your house. I have your phone numbers. I'll track you because we decided to get it. So we're going to have WrestleMania and the final four on the same time. The Rock is returning. He's a bad guy. If you've watched, he's been talking so much trash about Philadelphia. But this is the thing I want to explain to everybody because this is a cool promotion. We're doing the country boy master's challenge. So here's what happens. Starting tomorrow, when you come in here, if you order a meal, you will tell the woman, your waitress or the man that's your waiter,
Starting point is 00:07:06 who you think is going to win the Masters? You'll give them a name. You have from Saturday until Wednesday to do that. You give them a name. Then if that person wins, you and whoever else pick that person split $2,000. Now, if you pick Scotty Sheffler, you might only end up with $10. But if you pick a non-favorant that nobody else picks, you might wind up with all $2,000. So it gives you a little bit of who am I going to pick?
Starting point is 00:07:39 Am I going to pick somebody other people will? So that's Saturday through Wednesday, sponsored by Country Boy, Country Boy is going to have great price specials for their beer throughout the Masters. And then we have Pomeino cheese sandwiches next week. We have an egg salar of all three of the Masters sandwiches. Monique went and got the actual. master's recipe and is going to make those sandwiches starting. Now, that starts Monday.
Starting point is 00:08:04 That's not this weekend. But you can start putting in your guess. Now, how would you play it, Billy? How would you play it? Would you bet a favorite or would you try to take a long shot and get greedy? There's only really one name in golf that matters right now. It's Scotty Sheffler. I mean, he almost won his third straight event.
Starting point is 00:08:22 So you're going to pick Scotty Shelton? Oh, that's funny because Stephen Yeager seemed to put him away just last Sunday. Yeah, he got a little love. But what's the relation there? I saw you guys congratulating him. Did you guys? Our guy, Aaron Fleener, so Aaron Fleener, our friend's catty, catty for him a little bit. And then he was, when they had the first Barbisol, they had a pro-am.
Starting point is 00:08:43 I was on the, using this term loosely celebrity team with Tubby Smith, John Michael Montgomery, and Rick Dees. And our pro golfer was Stephen Yeager. Okay. And Stephen Yeager accused me of sandbagging. because when we got to the first T, they said, what's your handicap? And I said 20. 20?
Starting point is 00:09:04 Yeah, I think you might be on Steve's side here. And Tubby Smith said 15. And then when we got out there, I was a lot better than Tubby. And every time Tubby would hit a bad shot, Stephen Yager would go, how did you put a handicap worse than him so he would make fun of me about it? I guess you had to explain to him that you don't finish the hole. You just pick up the put and that really drastically changes the handicapped. in like a year.
Starting point is 00:09:28 I'm not explaining myself to you, Billy. The point is, so you would pick Scotty Schiff. That's right. What about you? I would go long shot. I don't know if I have a pick yet, but I wouldn't do Shephler and just, if he wins, split $12 with people. That's a paycheck.
Starting point is 00:09:42 So be thinking about what you're going to do and you come in Saturday through Wednesday. You can do it. So a lot of stuff going on starting tonight all the way through Saturday. What about Tiger and the Masters? Would you pick Tiger? I'm not picking Tiger. I mean, you're not going to get the odds. I was sitting right here crying when he won it.
Starting point is 00:10:00 But remember, the Masters is the one tournament that anyone can win because of the way the course is set up. You can get, older guys can win, you know, it's a practicing abstinence. Yeah, so I didn't see that story. He's practicing abstinence. He said that in an interview. His friend did. His friend said he is not having sex to get ready for the Masters tournament. What friend says that?
Starting point is 00:10:24 I don't know. Really, just so you know, you never have permission to talk about those things in public with us. Who's next? Steve is up next. Steve, go ahead, Steve. It was his friend. I'd soon that was him. Go ahead, Steve.
Starting point is 00:10:37 Oh, my gosh. You know, Matt, I had several things that was going to ask, but I'm going to ask this. Coming up in a few years or a couple years is going to be a replacement for U.S. senator. I think the Democrats can flip it. I'm conservative, but I think the Democrats can flip it. I'm conservative, but I think the Democrats can flip it. What do you think? Well, you know, I don't like to talk.
Starting point is 00:11:00 I try not to talk politics on here. So, yeah, I don't want to get into all that. If you're insinuating what I run, the answer is no. But as far as like a bigger picture thing, I think it would be very, very hard for a Democrat to win a Kentucky Senate seat. Not impossible, but it would be very, very hard. But we'll see. You never know.
Starting point is 00:11:19 I appreciate the call. Brony has declared for the draft. Yay. Good for him, and then he can go to his dad's team because he doesn't have the talent to go there naturally. Frank Relage. Good night. Is LeBron going to demand a trade wherever he goes?
Starting point is 00:11:40 But he's also keeping his college eligibility so that he can enter the portal if he wants. The whole LeBron-Bronny thing, here's all I would say. If I'm LeBron, don't put that pressure on your kid. Too late. Yeah, but like the whole I'll go where my son goes. Like you're asking for your son to be, let your son make it on his own merit.
Starting point is 00:12:06 Because if he makes it because people think you dragged him along, he's going to be mocked his entire career, and he's playing longer than you are, right? Make him make it on his own. Let's say he says, hey, if you pick my son, not get to come. Then his entire career, people are going to think the only reason he got picked was because his dad would come, and you don't want to put that on him. That's a mistake. He won't be able to dribble a basketball without the guy guarding him, calling him Daddy's
Starting point is 00:12:31 boy or something the whole game. Don't put that on your kid. Like make your kid, make it on his own, and then he's going to be more successful. I mean, like. And if it doesn't work out, he's going to feel like he failed you because you've been talking about it for six, seven years of what? Yeah, Eli and Peyton Manning had their own success. They didn't have Archie saying pick them and I'll play too. Like that's not, you don't want to do that. But what if he's not good enough for the NBA? Then he should, then that's life.
Starting point is 00:13:00 I wasn't good enough for the NBA. I survived. Bronny can be a radio host. I mean, Bronny's going to be fine. LeBron's worth a billion dollars. He's going to be fine. But how about have a second year of college and let's see how it works out? I agree.
Starting point is 00:13:17 At least that's what I think. Who's next? Brady is up next. Brady, go ahead, Brady. Hey, you know, Jordan's kids never played the NBA, so. I think they're probably fine. One of them, isn't one of them married to Scotty Pippen's wife? Something like that, yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Yeah, I think they're going, he's doing all right. But I was wanting to say that for this upcoming women's basketball season, I think this might be like one of the most, I guess, hyped women's basketball seasons ever with the new coach. I think that's probably right. And they might, I don't know, they might be more, people will definitely be more optimistic for that program than. Oh, I don't think there's any doubt about that. I mean, I think it's going to be really hard.
Starting point is 00:13:59 I appreciate the car call for UK basketball to get the average fan to be optimistic. I mean, by the end of the year, we'll all be excited because it's the beginning of basketball season. I know I will. But like, again, I'll get blamed. They'll go people aren't excited because of Matt Jones, which is absurd. But like it's hard for the regular fan to get excited, isn't it? Because you don't, A, we're not going to know any of these people unless Reed comes back. The one thing that could bring optimism, Billy, is if Reid came back.
Starting point is 00:14:31 That would make people, I think, excited. Yeah, I think it's just doing the same thing and expecting a different result. We've talked about this all week. And so, you know, the renovations to Memorial Coliseum, I'm sure go a long way to building some of that excitement. It'll be nice to have some of that positivity this off. The women's team, there will be a lot of excitement, going into the season. I think that's for sure.
Starting point is 00:14:49 Yeah, not to leave aside the men's problems. Just the excitement around the women yesterday with those commitments, the renderings and memorial coming out a little earlier in the week when they introduced Kenny Brooks. I just love, leave aside, not a head-to-head here. I just love what's going on the women's side of that building right now. And, you know, I haven't been around forever, but I can't remember at time there's been that much excitement behind them.
Starting point is 00:15:11 I think they're going to see a lot of tickets sold once they go on sale for the new place, too. Hey, guess who's having a birthday, Billy? Oh, who? Cornbread hemp. Five years of hemp excellence. And I didn't think they'd make them that make it this far. But now they're entering kindergarten.
Starting point is 00:15:25 And you can help celebrate with the full spectrum USDA organic gummies, oils, lotions, and saves. To celebrate and say thank you, cornbread is offering buy one, get one free until April 10th. Put in the promo code KSR 5. What's a promo code, Bill? KSR 5. At checkout. Cornbreadhempt.com.
Starting point is 00:15:46 The code is KSR5. Happy Birthday Cornbread. Thanks for keeping Kentucky comfortable. We'll take a break and be right back. More cornbed celebration here on Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here. KS Bar and Grill.
Starting point is 00:16:09 Come on out for lunch before the weather gets too nasty. Got the women's game tonight. One person writes, Matt, you should let Billy sit in for you while you go on your break. and you still haven't said why you're going on your break? Well, first of all, what do you think? You think Billy should sit in for two months? You think you have that in you? Well, maybe, yeah, I think I could.
Starting point is 00:16:36 Now, what happened to the confidence that I saw just a couple days ago? You got to say, yes, of course I could do. It's big shoes to Phil. You do a great job, Matt. I'm not going to say that you don't. But nothing to talk about in the summer. So that's already hard to do one hour. So three hours, that'd be a lot.
Starting point is 00:16:52 So you're saying you don't want it. No, I want it. Just can't I do it? We'll see. Yeah, so I'm going to leave. I'm leaving Memorial Day weekend, and I'll be gone until the 1st of August. We're going to have a lot of guest hosts that are going to be regular. So our hope is to have three people.
Starting point is 00:17:14 So Drew and Ryan and Shannon will be here every day. but three of the five days a week, they will have someone new with them, and it'll be the same person. So I'm finalizing who those people are, but the goal is to have Tom Hart, Peter Burns, and Meyer Metcalfe each here for a day with them, and then two days where it's just them. That's the goal. And then we'll have, like, part of my take guys and a couple special guests throughout the two months.
Starting point is 00:17:42 And I'm just, I'm going to go to Europe and just kind of be gone. for a couple months, and it's good because then the fan base will come together. Think how many titles we're going to win in those two months? Like, we're not going to lose any games, and it'll be good. But I'm looking forward to sort of getting away for a little bit. And then I'll return it. In August, we'll be ready for football season. Speaking of football, the spring game is next Saturday.
Starting point is 00:18:09 Yes. And I think it's open to the public, right? Don't know that, but. Is it? I don't want to say the wrong thing there. positive. I mean, I wouldn't see why it's not. Well, if it is, it's next Saturday. So, I mean, we should check to see, but I mean, it's coming. A lot of good, lot of good spring ball reports about Brock Vandergriff. Had a person tell me yesterday, every workout, every
Starting point is 00:18:38 practice, he's only had one bad practice his entire time. He's been awesome. Yeah, they've kind of, I actually was talking to Adam Luckin here yesterday. He's been covering every practice for us. They've been very quiet over there, but it's been a good quiet. It's a confident quiet, not a lot of news. They're just over there getting their work done, and I think that's a good thing. I mean, if you ask, you mean, you hear good reports about him. Brian Robinson, the freshman that looks like a junior already. You know, he's already making waves early on campus.
Starting point is 00:19:04 So good things are happening, but with everything else going on around BBN, they're kind of flying under the radar right now. Yeah, but, I mean, you shouldn't hear a lot of negativity around this time, or it would be a huge red flag, right? I mean, with Skangarillo, people were trying to pick up the offense around this time. and I think that's about as negative as you're going to get. Yeah, I still want to be positive because we need something. We do.
Starting point is 00:19:26 Right now. The Bush Hamden early reports are good, too. Everybody seems to like Bush Hamden a lot. So I'm hoping that goes. Listen, that schedule next year is a beast. It is. It's a beast. And there's a chance we could be better and have the same record, right?
Starting point is 00:19:45 But I'm still looking forward to it. We go to Texas next year. That's a new excitement. I don't know if you heard. I think we talked about it. The SEC decided the schedule the next year is just this year's flipped. Meaning so whereas we go to Texas this year, in two years, Texas is coming here. So we're going to play the same opponents in 2025 that we play this year.
Starting point is 00:20:11 We just flip where the games are. So that means we will not play Oklahoma. at least for two years, true. Yeah, going to Auburn, and then a lot of the similar ones we've had in the past. So weird, we're going to Texas, and we, have we gone to A&M? We've, no, they've never been here. That's what it is. They've never been here.
Starting point is 00:20:30 Yeah, we went there the season. We've gone to A&M. Josh Allen, but they haven't been here. I don't know how long A&M's been the conference, but they have never come here the entire time. So we're going to get Texas here and there before A&M. Before we even get A&M here. It's really insane that we have never ever. had A&M here in Lexington.
Starting point is 00:20:49 That Austin trip will be fun, though. I'm looking forward to that this fall. And Old Miss is on the schedule, I think, right? Again, we go to Old Miss again. I feel like we go to Old Miss every few days. They better not put it at 11 a.m. No, we've only been there twice in 15 years, and both were at 11 a.m.
Starting point is 00:21:01 Where we didn't even get to do the Grove. Yeah, but we went just this year. Did we? Yeah, didn't count. Give us a night game at Old Miss so we can do the Grove. You are way too worried about the Grove. Who's next? It's fun.
Starting point is 00:21:11 You liked it. Lance is up next. Lance is up next. Lance, go ahead, Lance. First, I will say, having Rick answer the phone as much as I love Shannon does add a little level of sophistication to your show. I'm glad you think that. But this is something I've been wanting to say ever since the tournament game, and it's bothered me. I want to get past it so I can start to not worry about basketball next year.
Starting point is 00:21:40 But 15 years ago, we go into a game with superior talent, with superior talent, with superior athletes and West Virginia throws a one-three-one zone at us. We can't figure it out. John Wall, Bledso, Dodson, shoot is out of the tournament. 15 years later, we go in with superior talent, superior athlete, and Oakland throws a one-three-one, and we still can't figure it out. He's had 15 years to learn how to play against a one-three-one. So any of this talk about him being a great coach is out the window.
Starting point is 00:22:14 Because if you can't figure that out, in 15 years when my fat butt sitting on the couch at home is like put somebody in the corner and break the zone. Well, they did. You know, what's amazing about that is they did it in the second half and it worked to perfection, but we had been down too much. You know, finally, if you go back and watch that Oakland game with about 15 minutes to go, they started putting Antonio Reeves in the corner and we broke the zone.
Starting point is 00:22:39 We scored a lot in the last 15 minutes. The problem was we just, we, They had a eight to ten point lead on us, and we couldn't catch up because we couldn't stop them. But you're right. We went 25 minutes running an offense where I think Cal's plan was, let's get it to the bigs in the center and have them finish. But the problem was the guys we were put in the center were our worst offensive players. So we were missing shot after shot from the insider.
Starting point is 00:23:08 They were turning it over. Finally, in the second half, they were using the middle to get Antonio Reeves in the corner, and I think he made three or four threes from over there, but it was too little, too late at that point. You know, and I'm a graduate, and I fully admit this, that people bring it up all time. I'm a graduate from University of Louisville,
Starting point is 00:23:27 but I wore my Kentucky gear in there every day. I sit with Louisville basketball players, Larry O'Bannon was my accounting lab partner, and I never stopped representing Kentucky. No, what's challenging you right now? Okay, this is about the team, right? But, but, no, I'm just like, when we got to the point where looking at next season, I'm just, like, almost hopeless. That's when I realize, like, this is a problem.
Starting point is 00:23:53 Well, I appreciate the call. It is very, it is frustrating. But, you know, it is what it is. We can't spend the whole offseason, you know, going about it. Let me ask you about Louisville since he says the Louisville grad. Does it, what are your thoughts true about the fact they seem to have, you know, they've now raised a million dollars in NIL in a week? Yeah, I don't love it.
Starting point is 00:24:13 it, especially when our goal is kind of, in a pause, I guess we'll say right now while people are down a little bit. You got to tip your cap to what they're doing. I still hope they lose every game, but he has injected a lot of life in that fan base with his stupid selfie stick. It shows you what little things like energy and press conferences can do. When he got hired, a lot of the fans were against the hire. A lot of the fans thought they were settling. A lot of their fans were down. And then he does one press conference. He does some selfie videos.
Starting point is 00:24:45 And next thing you know, they have a million dollars in NIL raised in a week. 500,000 of which is from their general fan base. There's one guy matching, but that's pretty amazing, Billy. It is. But, you know, when you get out of a brutal breakup, you're just happy to see any other female or male. You know what I mean? Like, just anybody else. Female or male.
Starting point is 00:25:05 Tell us about this, Billy. What happened to Charleston? We'll take a break and be right back. Learn more from Billy here on Kentucky Sports Radio. Come back, Kentucky Sports Radio, 859-2-80-2287. Text machine is 772-774-5-254. One person writes, Matt, I'm so upset. Pat Kelsey is at Louisville.
Starting point is 00:25:44 UK basketball is depressing. Louisville isn't. I will say this. They ain't won anything. Okay, so like before people go too crazy, they haven't won a game. They've got one commitment that's pretty good. in the transfer portal, the kid from James Madison.
Starting point is 00:25:59 But everybody slowed down. Remember, it was only two years ago that we were all hearing, Kenny won those games, Kenny one knows how'd that work out? Now, with that said, I think Pat Kelsey is going to do well there, but everybody just slow down before we act like it somehow. The thing you got to give him credit for is the marketing part because the people are excited, Drew, about the team. That's step one.
Starting point is 00:26:21 Yeah, it hasn't been five months since we were in downtown Louisville watching a sea of blue walk into the Yom Center to watch Kentucky absolutely destroy them on their own court. I'm glad they have a new coach that likes to take videos. You know, good for them. I'm glad they have some excitement, but that hasn't translated to wins yet. Are you going to watch the women's basketball Final Four tonight? I will. I really enjoyed watching the game the other night between LSU and Iowa, so got a couple good ones tonight.
Starting point is 00:26:49 Paige Becker's versus Caitlin Clark. That's going to be exciting. Who do you think wins? I'm not picking against Caitlin Clark right now. I mean, she's on a phenomenal run, and I feel like we're going to remember this tournament after the Jay Williams comment saying that she wasn't great. I think she loses tonight.
Starting point is 00:27:07 I think Yukon takes them. I just have no basis for that. Then I just feel like this is the end of the road. Either way, South Carolina is going to kill all these. Yeah, South Carolina is the team. Like, they're the best team by far. Nobody even comes close to them during games. Yeah, they're 36 and 0.
Starting point is 00:27:24 Whoever emerges from the other side, they're in trouble. trouble. But I'll take Iowa in this one. It is neat. You could have a Yukon, NC State, in both sports. I don't think that will happen. That would be awesome. It is on the table. Saturday, I know not everyone follows this, but that's okay. I do like to keep you all appraised. WrestleMania is Saturday. The Rock is returning. I found out that the woman that runs Monique that runs KS. Barr has like, the Rock is like her dream man. Oh, I didn't know this. So she's, I think she's intentionally working Saturday so she can watch. watch the rock. It's the rock in Roman Reigns versus Cody Rhodes and Seth Rawlins. You may not know who those other people are, but everybody knows who the rock is. Are you going to watch wrestling? Here's what's interesting about WrestleMania if you don't care about wrestling. They're having it outside Saturday in Philadelphia. It's supposed to be 41 degrees when they start, and it's outside, and it might be raining. Okay. The elements are usually not a part of wrestling.
Starting point is 00:28:26 wrestling. You usually don't have to play in bad weather, but the W&B says, we're going no matter what. And you know, wrestlers, they wear their little skivies out there. Do you think they're going to get cold, Drew? And like in the wrestling, they're going to, I don't know, there's going to be issues. If you get really cold, they're not too cold. I'm going to watch the rock part of it. It's like two days. It's a lot going on. Saturday. Sunday is kind of for the hard. core wrestling people. I'd say for you general public folks, I think you'd like
Starting point is 00:29:00 Saturday more. They kind of make that for the casuals a little more. And I really wasn't that interested until recently. The Rock has done a great job, cutting promos. They're getting a little edgier. I feel like wrestling got kind of corny there for a bit. They're getting some attitude back, and he's got me wanting to watch. So you don't want to watch him? Yeah,
Starting point is 00:29:16 I'll watch this part. All right, so we'll have it here Saturday night. Are you going to watch the Rock? I will not, but I hope everybody has a great time. Why don't you, you know, why don't you like wrestling? Like, I mean, we're involved. I'd love to have you play a part, but you're too much of a downer. No, I like it in person.
Starting point is 00:29:32 I just can't, I don't find it very fun on the TV. So you don't, you would, if the Rock was on your television, one of the most famous people in the country. Yeah. And he's wrestling. You're just like, nah. Nah. I'm no Monique here, but, you know, probably I'm not going to watch.
Starting point is 00:29:49 The Brahma Bull? People's eyebrow? Excuse me? All right. Who's up next? Joe is up there. Joe, go ahead, Joe. Hey, Matt, I figured I'm in a home here that's about 100 years old,
Starting point is 00:30:05 and I figured if there's any aftershocks to take me down, I want my last words of record to be with Jennifer Lawrence's future ex-husband. Good. I'm glad. Please stay safe. It is very scary. I was just wondering, do you see any true change? If it's not in the trying to find a seventh freshman, if it's not the coaching staff, if there are no changes with that. Let's say he ends up with a seventh freshman and there's no coaching staff changes.
Starting point is 00:30:37 It depends on when he gets into the quarter. No, he's not changing. Here's what I, and I'm not going to say I'm confident because, like, I guess you never know. But there's no reason to suspect that John Caliperi is going to change anything. If he's not willing to change his staff, and if he's not willing to change the recruiting philosophy, he's going to be John Calgary. Now, I still think John Calipari can win, but I think it's harder now. And I think we're going into next year with the same kind of team we had this year. The only difference is there'll be a little more athletic, so I think there'll be a little more athletic.
Starting point is 00:31:24 so I think they'll be a little better defensively, but I think they'll be worse offensively. So we'll see what happens. I liked what we saw at acquaintance of the night defensively. I know it was at a high school all-star game, but he had four steals. He's very active with his hands. So I think, as you said, defensively,
Starting point is 00:31:44 and there's a lot of room to go up with defense, but I still worry that we just said this over on the show. You had the two best freshmen in the country. You had almost a consensus, All-American next. of them. You had three, seven footers. With what they have right now, I don't know how you can get a team as good as last team. Let's be real. What is the scenario where they're better offensively than they were this year?
Starting point is 00:32:05 Impossible. We had three of the six best three-point shooters in the history of the school on the same team. Nate Oates looked like he saw a ghost in that press conference after Kentucky scored a hundred twenty-seven. Are we going to have a better shooter than Antonio Reeves on the team next year? No, no. No. Are we going to have a better shooter than Reed Shepard on the team next year? year.
Starting point is 00:32:25 Unlikely. Are we going to have a better shooter than Rob Dillingham on the team next year? Very unlikely. So we had three dudes who could shoot better than probably anybody we're going to have this year. So we're not going to score as many points. But I do think, Billy, we can be better defensively. And so maybe that's how they win. Well, you can't be much worse.
Starting point is 00:32:44 So I hope they can be better. But speaking of Cal, you know, we kind of took last year as the year that we were all on the same page they needed to make a run. now Cal knows this. He's sitting down with Mitch Bart aren't doing TV interviews. So I think we may get defensive Cal many times in press conferences if he does any this year. I don't know. I'll tell you the most shocking thing.
Starting point is 00:33:09 I was telling some people here at the bar yesterday, and Drew can back this up. So Drew and I were sitting. It's actually very hard at the NCAA tournaments to get, at the NCAA tournament to get good seats for the media. Usually they put you up in the top. but I literally snuck in and set in a scout section. There are seats for two NC state people and two Texas Tech people, and Texas Tech people didn't sit in their seats. So Drew and I sat in the Texas Tech scouting section.
Starting point is 00:33:39 Or no, excuse me, the NC State. It was the NC State scouting section because the Texas Tech guys were sitting down. We were in Joe Justice's seat probably. We were in Joel Justice's seat, I think. So we're sitting there and we're watching it. And Drew and I in the second half, we haven't. talked about this, but we were almost, you and I got silent. I think because both of our minds were thinking, we're going to lose, and what are we going
Starting point is 00:34:02 to do? Like, what are we going to say? What, I mean, what's our, I mean, what's our tax going to be? What's the future going to be like? I mean, there was a part of me sitting there watching going, is this going to be the last time I ever see John Calapary on a Kentucky sideline? I genuinely thought that was going to be the case. And you could feel, folks, you could.
Starting point is 00:34:23 feel it in the arena. The anger. Am I wrong? Even at halftime, before it got real, seemed like it was over. At halftime, people were livid. It was, there was so much palpable frustration and anger in the building that it even surprised me.
Starting point is 00:34:42 It really did. Like, I was like, I mean, you could, you could just hear it and feel it. And then when the game was over, the people walk and now there was just so much anger. So because of that, my assumption was, I just think they're going to make a separation because this can't continue. Here's what has surprised me since. I think the university and Calipari specifically were shocked at the fan reaction.
Starting point is 00:35:17 Shocked. Like, could not believe how frustrated the fans were. but my answer to that is where have you been? Like this has been building for a couple years. And when I've talked about disconnect, I think it really showed itself after that because that arena, I'll never forget what that felt like in there. It was, well, there was a reporter from another team that was about to play from NC State who looked at me and said, man, your folks are mad.
Starting point is 00:35:50 And I was like, yeah. And that was when I knew Drew like, oh, this is going to be the long, however long. And to add to that attention in there, we kind of had the same feeling in Nashville just a week before. That's exactly right. Kind of a different crowd, maybe a lot of the same crowd. But it's like we had this new feeling with Kentucky basketball, and it happened twice. It happened twice. It happened six days.
Starting point is 00:36:12 And it just felt like this thing is broken. That's what I actually said. I was like, I don't know if this can go on. It has nothing to do with Cal and his coaching. The fan-based coach relationship feels broken. and I don't know how next year it will be 100% what it needs to be, especially the support for the players coming in, who won't deserve any of the pressure that's going to be on them,
Starting point is 00:36:29 but they're going to have it. There are two or three media members that, and I'm not going to say who they are, but if you follow all of it, you'll know who it is. There are two or three media members that clearly get info still from the Cal people. And I read them sometimes to read the Cal tea leaves, right?
Starting point is 00:36:49 Like, it's like, you know, if you read me for 10 years, you kind of knew what Cal was thinking. If you read Kyle Tucker for a couple years, it was kind of clear this is the Cal. So there's a couple of those people that are out there. The common theme, if you read their writings in the last week, is they all say the staff couldn't believe, can't believe how upset people are. So if you want to have optimism, I think a lot of fans were this upset last year, But they didn't know.
Starting point is 00:37:23 And so a lot of the frustration you heard in press conferences and stuff, they genuinely thought that it was only Matt Jones and a handful of disgruntles that were upset. They had no idea the level that it was. I think they know now. I'd say so. I think they know now. And maybe that causes a change. That would be if I were going to make the case.
Starting point is 00:37:52 for optimism. That would be the case. Do I totally believe that? I don't know. But that would be the case. I like hearing that. Maybe backs against the wall. They know they're hungry.
Starting point is 00:38:01 But I also have a problem like, how did you turn in a year or two at the last couple of years? Because you said here, make stuff up. You want to know the answer to that question? Because when you, when you're not open to criticism,
Starting point is 00:38:16 you will just dismiss criticism as haters. They're not real fans. I've heard that a few times. real fans, they're cluttered, that like, when you're not really open to criticism, then people who criticize you are the problem, not anything you're doing. And that's been the mindset. And for some of our fans, it's still the mindset. But, you know, I disagree with that.
Starting point is 00:38:40 Sorry, Billy, I cut you. No, no, it's, I was kind of on the same path of Drew there. Just a lack of awareness to not be able to read the room. Read the room. Reading the room is a good way of putting it. That's a really good way of putting it. the room. I am bad at a lot of things, but when you do live crowds, when you do shows in front of people on a weekly basis like I do, I'm pretty good at reading a room. I can tell when I have
Starting point is 00:39:04 the room and I can tell when I've lost the room. I'm pretty good at reading a room. I just don't think they were very good at reading the room. But now the room has like imploded. The room's on fire. There's smoke everywhere. So now they have to read it because they don't really have a choice. There's a great new way to support Kentucky athletes, Billy, while drinking fresh artesian. Am I saying that right? Yes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:29 Because people keep telling me I don't say it right. Artisan? Is it artisan or artisan? I think it's what you make it. It's artesian, artisan, bottle water. Kentucky rain bottle water is on sale at Kentucky branded, and 10% of all the sales go to the 15 club to support Kentucky athletes. It's Kentucky Rain, R-E-I-N.com.
Starting point is 00:39:51 They've got packs now with Barryon Brown, Mason Moore, and others. Go to Kentucky Rain.com. That's R-E-I-N.com for your best water needs. We'll take a break and come back. Final segment here at KS. Barr's Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back. It is final segment here at Kentucky Sports Radio. Final segment of the week.
Starting point is 00:40:19 Shadyrays.com, you need some sunglasses. If they break, maybe you can use them for the eclipse. I mean, don't, because that's probably. not the right kind of sunglasses, but you could have them just in general just to look cool during the eclipse, right? Yes, don't stare at the sun. Do not stare at the sun. You got it at the summit. You got one over there in Louisville at Fritz Farm.
Starting point is 00:40:41 Go to shadyrays.com. Buy two pairs, get 50% off. If you lose or break them, they'll replace them. The best sunglasses, and it's a Kentucky company with shadyrays.com. One person writes, Matt, I agree with what you're saying about criticism and being open to it, would you believe the same about those that criticize you and KSR? Yes, if they're good faith criticizers. So for instance, pretty much anyone that criticizes Cal is a fan of Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:41:10 So by their very nature, they care, right? If someone is a fan of KSR and listens every day and says, Matt, you do this, I wish you would think about doing it differently, I will listen because they are good faith. They are a fan of the show. someone that never listens to the show and then talks about how terrible it is that's not good faith I heard a comedian once say
Starting point is 00:41:33 if someone buys a ticket to my show and criticizes me I will listen because they have put an investment in and they are by spending their money good faith he goes but why should I go on social media and just take barbs from people that don't care either way
Starting point is 00:41:48 so if you're a fan of KSR and you write me as people do on the text machine I will listen to that If you're somebody who goes, I don't ever listen, but Matt sucks, well, what am I supposed to do with that? I mean, if you don't listen, like, how am I supposed to? I mean, there's nothing to do, you know? Yeah, I think that's a good distinction. I just, I think you can't, it's hard to tell online, right?
Starting point is 00:42:12 You just get the avalanche of negative comments sometimes. Yeah. But the thing about Kentucky basketball is when people, like, I don't think we should care what Tennessee fans think about Cal. No, get out of here. Tennessee fan criticizes Cal. If I was Cal, I'd tell him, who cares? Who cares? You're not a fan of ours. What Final Ford you go to?
Starting point is 00:42:30 Yeah, who cares what Louisville fans think? But when Kentucky fans say it, people who are fan, then I think that matters. So when a KSR fan says it, I care. If you hate KSR or hate me or hate Drew or hate them, why, we're not going to win you over. So who cares? This morning, someone shared a clip of us from yesterday. It's like a 15-second clip, and there's a guy that wrote a paragraph. he clearly didn't listen to the clip and now people are fighting.
Starting point is 00:42:56 Like you are the example. The clip is right there. You didn't hit play to hear it. Yeah. So, you know, that is what it is. Hadley is next.
Starting point is 00:43:03 Hadley, Hadley, go ahead. Hi. Hi. How are you? So I'm calling it about Mary yesterday. She was a lady who was talking about the new generation.
Starting point is 00:43:16 Yes. I'm just going to pull up my handwritten notes of what I want to talk about first. Okay, I got about 30 seconds, Hadley. Make it good. Doesn't it seem a little bit victim-blaming that she's blaming the student who wanted to go to a class so they can get a good education and not to school who didn't cancel classes because of the weather? Two, I just wrote down notes. I'm pretty good at writing. I've learned two languages.
Starting point is 00:43:43 I've fluent in two languages and learning a third one. Three, one thing about this new generation, we may not be good at everything. but we're stubborn and don't like being talked down to. Hadley with the fire. I appreciate the call. Hadley. Hadley, how about that? Take it up for the younger generation.
Starting point is 00:44:06 Frank Hadley coming through at the end of the show. Frank Hadley coming in. So, well, listen, Billy, I want to thank you for this week. All your help. No problem. You've been great this week as well. I enjoy it. Drew's going to the Masters on Monday and Tuesday.
Starting point is 00:44:21 So on Monday and Tuesday, it's just me and Ryan. Shannon will be back towards the end of next week. So we're still playing half team. But hopefully between UK baseball, the Final Four, WrestleMania, hopefully we'll see you somewhere in Lexington. Real quick, who's going to play in the championship game for the men? Yukon and Purdue. Yukon and Purdue. What are you got?
Starting point is 00:44:45 You've got. And Purdue. Two best teams all year. they probably deserve it. Anybody going to beat Yukon? No. No. They may win by double digits.
Starting point is 00:44:55 I oddly kind of hope Purdue win. We cannot give a sixth title to Yukon. I almost want Purdue, of all places, to win a title. We will see you on Monday. This is BID, Kentucky Sports Radio. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
