Welcome back.
It is Kentucky Sports Radio here on an unbelievable day that we didn't think we'd see.
Monday, April the 8th here in Lexington.
We are at the KS. Bar and Grill.
We already got TV stations here.
Everybody watching, got folks already interviewed.
You can give us a shout.
We'll open up the phones.
After this segment on the Clark's Pump and Shop phone line 859-280-2287,
A Vision Auto Glass Text Machine, 772-724 in this edition,
sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office is called T.J. I'll Make them Pay.
I know we have a brand new group of listeners coming in. We've already done an hour.
Obviously, John Cal Perry has left Kentucky and will be the new coach at Arkansas,
a shocking chain of events, but one that I think ultimately can be a positive for Kentucky.
A lot of folks are writing in for questions, and I want to hear what the general public thinks,
and we're going to open up the phones here in just a minute.
Let's talk about this.
Just yes or no answer.
Is Kentucky – was this a good thing to happen for Kentucky long term?
See, I'm in the boat.
My answer is yes.
I just think the timing was right.
Like I said, time for Cal to get a fresh start and time for Big Blue Nation to get a fresh start,
and the program to get a fresh start.
So it's like I think the timing is probably right.
So I go yes.
Do you think it's like with Tubby?
Yes.
That was certainly the right time for that.
And it's so eerily familiar where Tubby's, you know, early years were so good
and then kind of tapered off at the end.
A school comes out of nowhere, courts him and boom, just like that, super quick.
And half a day, he's gone.
It's also worth noting, though, they got turned down by Chris Beard and Jerome Tang
before they went to Cal, which is a really strange chain of events if you think about it.
The other guy they interviewed was the Arkansas Little Rock coach.
No, I mean, their other contender was Arkansas Little Rock and Will Wade.
Those were the two that they were looking at
Was Arkansas Little Rock guy and Will Wade?
What do you think?
Yes, I do.
I think it was inevitable.
Cal was going to run this next season back
with the same things that he's been doing the last four or five years
and we would have just been in this same situation a year from now.
So it saves Kentucky $34 million,
and now Kentucky can jump in that pool and find somebody else.
So let's go back to my optimistic view.
All right.
Okay, so first of all, this next year,
if you were ever going to lose Cal,
First, we always knew.
All of us knew the year Cal left, the next year we would lose all of our players.
We all knew that, right?
That's part of the Cal wager.
You get good immediately, but then you collapse when it's over.
But now you don't have to collapse because of the transfer portal.
We can put a good team on the floor next year.
I mean, there are teams right now that went to the Sweet 16 or Elite 8 that had a completely different roster
than they had this year.
South Carolina's women just won the national championship
with a completely different roster than the roster
they won the national championship with last year.
Like, you can go and do it.
So if there was ever going to be a time for him to leave,
Ryan, this is as good as it was going to be.
So, you know, the new coach, whoever it might be,
has that advantage that other coach have not had
because they can go rebuild with the transfer portal immediately.
Will we have any player on the roster now,
or any of the freshmen coming in.
Well, Travis Perry, right?
He'd bite.
Travis Perry, maybe.
Reed Shepherd, pipe dream, but maybe.
Everyone else, gone.
Just assume that's happening, right?
Just assume we won't get any of the recruits will be here.
None of the players currently on the team.
I think between me and you, there was only like two currently on the team that even had a shot to come back anyway.
I think DJ Wagner might have come back.
and I think Z might have come back.
The rest of them, I think, we're gone.
Do you assume that they're all going to follow him to Arkansas also?
No, I think some of them will, but I think some of them might not.
I mean, I think, you know, you've got to want to live in Arkansas.
Now, I do think most of them will.
Maybe they all will.
But here's the thing.
What made us think this was going to be any better next year?
Like what made us think relying on freshman next year was going to be better than relying on freshman this year?
we probably would have seen a lot of the same been a lot of the same yeah it would have been probably a lot of the same
Kentucky basketball now there are some things we've accepted for 10 years that are going to change in a positive way
our AD is going to have a relationship with the new coach think about that our football and basketball coaches are not going to hate each other
the football and basketball coaches despised each other for the last three years
like don't over they despised each other that's gone now right right you're going to have a coach
who talks to the local media you're going to have a coach who does his pregame shows how about
that you're going to have a coach that doesn't like run away from being
in public with folks.
Like, you're going to have a coach that's like Cal was the first few years.
We haven't had that in a decade.
I get some players whose sole focus is on Kentucky and not going to the NBA.
You're going to get some players who stay here for a little while.
Yeah.
I mean, now, what are we going to lose?
We're going to lose being the guy that on draft night,
our coach is up there watching all the dudes get picked.
And while that was cool,
I'd like to be the one playing the night.
Right?
How many of those good dudes for Purdue are going to be drafted?
One.
One.
Maybe three from Yukon?
Wouldn't you rather be playing tonight?
Yeah, for sure.
That's what we're going to have.
I think we'll be back to that.
I genuinely do.
Somebody writes, who's going to be in a final four again first?
Cal or Kentucky?
Well, you know, kind of like you said, Matt, you can just rebuild immediately now.
You get the right coach.
We'll be good next year.
Now, I think it would be unrealistic to say we're going to go win a title good.
But let me just go say you get NATO.
You don't think he can put a team together next year?
Certainly, he did it this year.
He did it this year.
Their starting lineup is completely different than it was last year, and he got them in the final four.
I mean, Cal may have to play his own.
in the tournament. I mean, the preparation's on a different level with some of the teams that we've
seen in the final board. You don't think on the transfer portal, every single person out there
now sees that one of the, maybe the best program in the country has a lot of playing time available.
Need some players. And need some players. Right? I mean, I just see it as an opportunity.
We're going to lose Boogie Flan and Jaden Quint. We're going to lose those guys. And that stinks.
You know, I'd love to have them.
But, Ryan, this was coming one day anyway.
Now it's just here now.
And Bob, we said it 15 times already.
The timing just seems to be best for all parties involved, including Cal.
It's time for him to move on and get a fresh start.
I hate the fact it's in an SEC rival, but that's where he wants to go.
That's the decision they made.
Go ahead.
Well, I'm going to ask you this.
I've had a couple people text me this.
I'm just going to ask you.
They said, basically, they feel like a little bit of a fool from their
that press conference.
You should have never believed it to begin with.
Again, if you watch that press conference,
if you watched that meeting with Barnhart and Cal
and thought that that meant all was good,
that's on you, man.
Like, you got to be better.
Like, remember what my reaction was after that?
You weren't here, I don't think.
But you remember what my reaction was after I saw that?
What?
I'm glad they did it, but it changed nothing for me.
Because I...
I feel bad.
By the way, you guys can have a seat wherever you want.
I feel bad because, like, I'm not trying to be, but I want to say to people,
I've been telling you guys, you cannot believe, you can believe what is told to you by public figures,
or you can just accept reality.
Those two guys did not like each other.
And them sitting there and doing a press conference or doing an interview did not change that for me one bit,
Ryan, did it you?
No, because we knew.
We knew the behind the scene, but I think a lot of people, I think, took it at their word.
But everybody's been telling people.
They just didn't want to believe it.
You know, for all the Matt was, like, angry.
What about Kyle Tucker?
Why would he write all that?
He was Kyle's guy for two years.
Why would T.J. Beisner leave.
Why would Jay Lucas?
Like, the signs were there.
You just didn't want to hear him.
some people yeah so no i don't feel like a fool because i never thought it meant anything anyway
but you didn't either no but i think you know it's like one guy said man and when cow looked right
in the camera and said this is where i want to be i want to be here he said i believed him when he said
that and now we find out he was talking to ohio state in february
i didn't i mean i didn't believe he it was the same talking points from the radio show
ryan you know what i mean i don't think i don't think cow is a
dishonest or a bad person.
But have we not learned you couldn't believe what he said?
The injury news.
Like severe wheelers coming back.
I mean, like, this was out there for people to see.
So no, I was the only thing, here's the only thing I'm surprised about.
I'm surprised he went in conference and is going to have to play here at Rupp.
That's the only thing I'm surprised about.
I thought it was possibly to take another job.
I'm surprised he chose to take one where he's going to have to walk in here next year.
Did he also talk to USC?
I saw that floated around some last night.
That's the one I always thought he was going to take.
I would too.
I can see that.
That's the one I thought he was going to take.
But, you know, this is going to be the right thing.
It just is.
John Calgary had a great,
legacy here. But this was falling apart behind the scenes. The NIL thing, they put up and asked for a
million dollars and they had 50,000. They were shocked. You know who wasn't shocked? Me. I knew that
was going to happen. They had no, they had no idea where this fan base was. That's the biggest,
the biggest telling point is this. Cala Perry and his folks had
no idea how deep the fan base was frustrated because they had cut themselves off from the fan
base. So when the Oakland game hit, I've talked about this, you could feel it in the building.
Yeah. Was it were any of you there? When he walked off the court, Drew and I looked at each other.
Game was over. I think, you know, they were fouled at the end a little bit. And we're about to walk off
and I said, Drew, hang on. I want to watch the last minute. Because I think that, you know, they were
this might be the last time we ever see Cal.
And there's a video I posted last night.
It's kind of eerie, actually, of him walking off the court.
CBS, like, doesn't talk and just lets the sound run.
It was great directing by whoever did that.
And as you walk off in the building, you could just feel it was different.
You could just feel this fan base.
It's not going to work.
You could feel it in there.
Yeah, there was a fan leaning on with a railing.
as he walked off said, Cal, is this the gold standard?
Is this the gold standard, Cal?
He just, you know, yelling at him as he walked off the floor that time.
So what about the report from John Fanta that Cal Perry said he didn't feel wanted or supported?
Well, it goes back to winning.
I think that would change if he was winning actual games.
But, you know, what was telling for me is when that store owner called KSR
that wanted to give money for NIL and couldn't do it.
I mean, it seems like Cal has absolutely checked out in several different aspects of coaching.
And now it reinvigorates both.
both sides. Last night I couldn't sleep, so I was trying to think of like what today was going to be like,
and I decided I am going to write a post today. I made a commitment to myself, and here I'm going to
give you the gist of it. Cala Perry's not the coach here anymore, in large part because he lost
three guys, Dwayne Peevy, Kenny Payne and John Roebuck that represented the three parts of his
personality that were a little weak, but they made up for it. And then when he lost those
three, he never replaced it.
And that's why he's not
the coach here anymore.
With Dwayne, he lost the connection
to the fans and the administration.
A guy who, Dwayne felt
the pulse of Big Blue Nation. He understood
it. He understood what the fans
thought and he understood how
Mitch thought. And he was able
to communicate Calisms
to Mitch and the fans
and they trusted him.
Cal trusted him. It worked.
With Kenny Payne, he
lost the guy who understood how to deal with these players. Cow's a lot, and Kenny Payne was the
player whisper. I know he didn't succeed at Louisville, but Kenny Payne would show up at the gym at
two in the morning and work these players out, and when Cal was screaming at people, and they were like,
I can't deal with this anymore, they'd go to Cal or go to Kenny Payne, and he would help him. And then
with Robic, they lost the basketball mind. They lost the X and O guy. They lost the X and O guy.
who goes, all right, we're playing Florida this week.
What's their weakness?
How do we exploit it?
And Cal would listen to him.
They lost all three of those guys in one year from 2019 to 2020, and it was never the same.
No.
It was never the same.
Those three, if you want to say at the end of the day, what did it in?
Losing those three guys back to back to back, to me is ultimately what did in the Cal area.
You agree with that?
Because they kind of all just left around the same time.
That's a big void to fill.
Now, going into this season, this time last week we talked about Cal's got to get some shooters.
He's got to get a game prep guy.
He's got to make some staff changes.
They were going to make no changes.
They were going to make no staff changes.
When I heard that, I could not believe it.
I could not believe, but that's what was going to happen.
You've already seen the reports.
He's putting Brad on the staff at Arkansas.
He wanted to do that here.
I'm not sure that UK was going to let him or not.
I don't know, but he wanted to.
And I'll note, Tubby Smith, when he left, what was one of the issues?
Saul.
He wanted to put Saul on the staff.
Time is a circle.
I mean, like, time is a circle.
Sometimes it repeats itself.
We'll take a break.
We're going to open the phones.
859-280-2287.
What do you think about all this?
This is KSR.
I like this song.
it ends with him saying,
he won't go back to Arkansas.
I don't think I'm going to go back to Arkansas either.
Although Bobby Bones is going to join us at 1030,
he'll kind of tell us how he thinks it went down on the Arkansas side,
which I'm actually fascinated.
Like, how did it all play out for Arkansas?
You know?
Yeah.
Well, you know, the old story was when Kentucky hired Eddie Sutton from Arkansas,
Eddie said something like I'd crawled to Lexington to take that job from Arkansas.
Well, unless you've been to Fayetteville,
you ain't crawling. There's going to be, you get broken glass on the side of the road if you do that.
So you better be careful. It's going to be, it'll be interesting. Remember, like, that's a good job.
But they're going to have expectations now. I mean, they've been to the elite eight two of the last four years.
They haven't been terrible. And they had two coaches turn them down before Cal in Chris Beard and Jerome.
And also remember, Andy Enfield, Enfield of USC goes to SMU. When I heard that, I thought that's weird.
why is the coach at USC going to SMU, which leads to Musselman going to USC, which leads to Cal to Arkansas.
It's amazing how the Domino's end up working.
One person writes, Matt, what do you think he meant?
Mitch meant, or excuse me, Cal meant when he said he didn't have support here.
I think he meant two things, fan support and NIL.
I think the NIL thing, I think they just, I think he accepted.
expected, well, I know he expected all the people that have been giving to football.
Football has killed it with the NILs.
Now, I mean, they still got to do better.
They got their own NIL issues in terms of money raising,
but they've done a lot better than I think anybody thought.
And I think Cal was like, where's the basketball?
But here's the thing.
People who give that kind of money, you've got to treat them a certain kind of way.
You know what I mean?
Like it's their money.
And Cal just kind of done his own thing for a long time.
And those big money people with a new coach probably will be more inclined to donate more money.
Mark Stoops wins a big game.
All right.
Let's say Mark Stoops wins a big game.
You know what he does?
He has the biggest donors and in-isle boosters to his house and he hosts them for a celebration.
You think John Cal-Perry does that?
No.
And that makes a difference.
people how you treat people matters to people and I think I think that's been a huge thing
mark stoop's and Vince merrill have individually cultivated football donors in a way that cow
has not in basketball and I think he thought UK would take care of itself and it does with kids
out of high school but I don't think it does with the transfer portal and I think that's where they
were surprised all right who's up first John Nate Nate what do you think Nate
Wow, nothing like being the first call on this type of a day, no pressure.
Having an eclipse today and all this other craziness going on in the world is fitting.
Talk about the eclipse. Wow.
For what's happening.
I was on Twitter until 4 a.m. last night, which was crazy.
I was on your space.
One of the most telling things that I noticed where people need to calm down.
At 1130 at night, Arkansas was hosting a Twitter space as well, 2,200.
And I think yours hit 22,000 at one point.
It did.
That is a massive difference in the fan base.
But just to kind of go over a couple things that I was looking at.
Real quick.
Yes.
Yeah, sure.
Sure.
Justin Rowland tweeted out that Yukon was very worried.
And then Trilly Donovan just released that Natoz is not going to be an option for Kentucky that he's heard for multiple sources there.
Just kind of wanted to get your all feedback because this is like a really big thing.
So we'll hear a ton of stuff.
We'll hear a ton of stuff.
And I appreciate the call.
because we went on at nine, I have not been able to make any calls to get like names and seriousness.
I'm going to be spending all afternoon on that.
So when it comes to names, I don't know anything right now because I wasn't going to call everybody at 7.30 in the morning.
I was up until two and everybody's still processing.
This afternoon, the name thing will start to be clear.
If Danny Hurley's interested, then go get it.
If Nate Oates is not interested, then that is what it is.
like I want him to be interested, but if he's not, he's not.
I would just say, let that play out for a few hours, for 24 hours.
I think there's a lot of times that, you know, you got to see how it happens.
So let's see.
I think we'll know a lot more about all this, Ryan,
tomorrow morning at this time when it comes to names.
Right now I'm going to treat all speculation as just that.
Yeah.
Because I will say this.
Mitch will not tell you who he's really looking at until he's ready.
So we'll see.
Does a guy like was on Mitch's shortlist one time,
shock a smart, get a revisit this time around?
I think that's the next tier down.
Yep.
But not crazy.
Yeah.
Yeah, and then we start throwing aims out there like Bruce Pearl, right?
Yeah.
I think because of what happened the last couple years,
everybody's on the table.
Yeah.
If this happened two years ago, Mitch would not have hired a coach like Cal.
He'd have gone and hired Scott Drew.
This time, I think everybody's on the table.
He knows it's an inflection point.
I think everybody's on the table.
And it's just a question of the money won't be an issue, though.
We'll take a break.
Come back.
Bobby Bones is going to join us.
We'll take your calls.
This is KSR.
Welcome back.
Tugie Sports Radio.
All right, Bobby Bones, I heart radio personality,
on every television show in America.
A friend of mine is here with us,
and Bobby's a huge Arkansas fan.
So let's just start with this, Bobby.
John Caliperi, coach Arkansas.
Does it make you happy?
Yes, it makes me very happy,
but I think what makes me extremely happy
is the money that they've committed to NIL
with John Calipari.
I mean, if we get Cal, that's awesome.
We wanted to splash higher, obviously.
It's all about splash.
Then it's, you know, substance after splash.
But the fact that they've committed so much money to NIL,
with a guy who obviously you know better than anyone can use that money in amazing ways.
Like, I'm super pumped today.
I mean, Matt and I were talking last night, and I said, hey, don't say anything I'm saying.
I started to not get texts back about midday yesterday, which means not the people don't like me,
but I have a pretty good little system up there.
I will just say the high, the big dollars or the people making decisions.
And when I stop hearing texts back, it means they can't tell me for a lot.
while more than they don't want to tell me.
And that's when I figured that the cow stuff was starting to really come to a head one
way or the other.
So that's mid-afternoon.
So like now that you've had this morning, I know you had your show, but like, how do you
think it went down?
I mean, I know you don't know for sure, but on the Arkansas side, how do you think it
went down?
How'd they end up with cow?
Well, I think we aimed for Chris Beard because we felt like we were getting Chris Beard.
and I think every indication was Chris Beard was coming to Arkansas
and last minute, Ole Miss,
listen, that program's been using their money very wisely.
They've done it in football and basketball.
They made Beard a really great offer and he felt that he would stay,
so then we didn't have Beard.
And I can say that some of the other candidates that they were talking to,
and I'll just name them in no order,
so I'm not associating myself with any of them,
but Will Wade or Jans or you can go down.
I was in a bit of conversation with at least one
of them and it was going pretty good where everyone kind of thought that one of those options
was going to be it.
And my feeling is that Mr. Tyson, who has a great relationship with Coach Cal obviously and so
it was sons, my feeling is that for the first time in a while, Mr. Tyson said, you know,
I'm happy to inject some money into this situation and did.
and, you know, and listen, Cal probably wanted to get out of Kentucky as much as Kentucky
wanted to get out of Cal, right?
I feel like from.
So you think the Tyson chicken guys.
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
Brought him to Arkansas.
I think Hunter, Eurecheck did a great job of feeling after the, listen, this is all
speculation, right?
Speculation from like three different people that are semi-connected.
Because, again, they stopped texting with me.
So I think that that was the closer.
I think that is a lot of the money.
I think that is at least the backing of if you need it, I'm here.
And more than has been in the past with Mr. Tyson and his sons ever.
So that's a big part of it too, right?
Is that the Tyson chicken family who has not really been donating in the current Arkansas era has said if you get Cal, we'll start donating.
Is that kind of, is that correct?
I can't say that it's absolutely correct because, again, I'm not in those.
if I were recreating, though, if I were rewriting the movie, I would say, yes, that would be a scene that I would write in going, I would go to Cal party.
And listen, I don't know, but Coach Cal probably let somebody know, hey, I'm over here because I know they started talking on Friday last week.
So in the midst of the beard situation, my indicator, and I didn't believe it, though, honestly, when I heard that, I thought it was really just a bunch of people.
Well, it had to be before Sunday.
you would not be able to get a deal like that agreed to before Sunday.
So Friday would make some sense.
Did you get any indication?
Did Cal go there?
There was a plane tracked to Kentucky way before he left, before he left to go.
Where was he in Phoenix?
Where was Cal?
He was in Phoenix, yes.
He was in Phoenix for the Thursday night.
He was in Phoenix for the Antonio Reeves thing.
there i'm just there there there there's some privileged information that i cannot say because i do not
want to so that's what we got to do you got it we got to find somebody to track the plane from
phoenix to phaetville and see if there was one uh if there was one there was one there all hated
cow for a long time i hated him people get over that quickly how beloved will he be when he starts
calling the hogs but you know why we hated him right because he was awesome and you guys are
or freaking Kentucky.
We hated Will Wade, too.
I loved Will Wade at Arkansas,
and, you know, for a different reason,
but we hate the people that,
it's like me being an Arkansas fan.
Like, I hate the Texas Longhorns,
but it's because they're the big brother in football.
Like I hate Kentucky as a basketball team,
but not because I hate the people individually,
but because for years and years you guys have pounded us.
The same reason I hate Cal,
we'd love to see him get ejected.
We play that clip of him getting thrown out of the game during our games,
and you got to beat us in that game.
Like, that's how much we hated Cal.
That's right. He did get thrown out down there twice, I think, did he? Yeah. Yeah. And then you beat us. But he's going to be beloved if he comes and if he wins, who I think is probably like a little irritated, not upset, but a little irritated is Musk. Because I love Musk, by the way. I hated to see Musk go, but we all knew Musk was going to go back to California at some point, and all the domino started to fall once USC took the SC coach. And, you know, I was texting on Musk during the process, hated to see him go. But must didn't have.
the resources that Cal is going to have. A Cal is going to have them immediately.
Bobby Bones, thank you very much. Take good care of Cal. I think this can be a win-win for everybody.
So I wish you the best. And hopefully we'll see you in Rup here. Yeah. Let me ask you one question.
And I know you're probably run out of time. But do you like Cal as a person? And secondly,
I've always tried to not fly too close to the sun. I'm a pretty big donor. I'm a pretty big NIO guy.
but I don't want to get too close to the program if I don't like the person
because I don't want to not like the team.
I don't want to root against any part of what I love more than anything other than my wife.
So what am I going to want to be friends?
Yeah, no, you'll love him.
You'll love him.
So here's how I'll answer your question.
For 10 years, I loved Cal as a year.
First of all, I still think Cal's a great person.
Put everything else aside, he's a great person.
You will love him.
I don't think there's any doubt.
For 10 years, he's a good.
was wonderful to me.
And as I've said many times, I started KSR before Cal, but he was a big, huge part of taking
it to the next level.
I will always owe him for that.
Things changed in the last four years, not just with me and him, just in general.
But if he gets back, if you get the Cal, where he is Cal at his best, which I think
you will, you guys will love him.
He has, but he is a good person with a good heart.
And yes.
So do I think to answer your question, do I think he's a good person?
Yes, I do.
Were he and I close at the end?
I think it's fairly obvious the answer was no.
Do you, who is your list of four coaches that you think you can get and you want?
All right.
So can get, I don't know.
What in order would be Danny Hurley, Billy Donovan, Nate Oates.
Well, excuse me, let me take this back.
that. Danny Hurley, Jay Wright, Billy Donovan, Natoats. There are other people I would be satisfied
with, but those are the four. If you gave me one of those four, I'm jumping up and down for the next week.
If you give me one in the next group, which I think includes Scott Drew and probably other names that I
don't know yet, I'm going to be fine with it, but they're going to have some proving to do.
I think no chance Jay Wright, no chance Hurley.
I don't think Wright wants to coach anymore in this environment.
And Hurley, no chance.
He wins another national championship.
Nate Oates would be awesome.
I'm rooting for Purdue tonight.
I'm rooting for Purdue tonight.
The perfect time to leave is if you listen.
Hey, let us dream.
A week ago, you thought you were getting the coach at Little Rock, all right?
So let us dream, Bobby.
No, we did it.
And I will not accept that.
But I'm hoping you guys get a really good coach.
I cannot wait to come to Rupp.
And it's going to be awesome to hear those booze.
but it's going to create the rivalry that we have thought we've had forever
and has just slightly been introduced every five or six years.
So good luck to you guys.
We're pumped.
I know it's good for you guys as well, and we'll talk to you guys soon.
Thank you for coming in, Bobby Bones.
There you go.
So says he thinks it started Friday.
That's my biggest takeaway of everything that he said.
So, you know, it kind of snowballed in two hours last night.
No, that's not true.
If they were really starting to talk on Friday, a lot of things got worked out before we even do anything about it.
Check the planes from Phoenix to face.
Because he was in Phoenix Thursday night, but now Bobby says in Fayetteville, Friday.
And according to Matt Norlander's reporting, Cal had to tell Mitch if he was ever in contract talks,
and he wasn't told until after midnight last night. That's a whole other. That's a whole other.
So did Matt Norlander finally say he was told?
I don't think, I don't know if he ever did, but I think those reports started coming out eventually this morning.
It is. The sequence of events is fascinating to me. Like what is the time frame?
where it goes.
I think that will be fascinating.
All right.
For those of you on hold,
I'm going to take about four or five calls in the next break.
I kind of want to hear what the fans think.
Are you excited?
Are you nervous?
Are you happy?
We'll do like a rapid fire if I want to hear what everybody says.
But first,
clear-cut hero, the hydration drink that's changing the game,
Billy, look at this right here.
Look at that.
Look at that.
Pecks, fruit, crunch, cosmic blue razz and dragon fruit,
Nova orange, Nexus, peach, mango.
and he clips lemon lime.
It's right here.
It's clear-cut hero.
Grab your variety pack at Amazon today and get it.
Even if you're worried about the coaching, you can still hydrate.
We will take a break.
I want to hear what the UK fans think next here on KSR.
Welcome back, Techie Sports Radio.
All right, I do want to hear from some callers.
Just do me a favor, okay?
In order to get as many people, like 30 seconds,
you don't need to do the intro about how long you've been a fan.
Like, just let me know.
your opinion and like because i want to hear what people what people think about this so ready let's do
this right let's go let's go john go who's up first luke luke go look hey matt uh i just want to say
i think i found the flight from phoenix to uh Arkansas here uh looks like uh 530 when he was landed
maybe uh it wasn't direct to Fayetteville but it was to think springdale just the town north of it
Is it a private jet?
He wouldn't have flown commercial.
Is it a jet?
Yes, it's a Hawker 800.
That's got to be it.
That's got to be it.
That's got to be it.
If he landed at 5.30 in the morning, Friday, after he was there Thursday night, that's got to be it.
It's 5.30 in the afternoon.
5.30 in the afternoon.
That's got to be it, right?
Yes.
I would think so because the registration is private.
I mean, I was checking.
I'm a pilot myself, and I was checking everything.
All right.
All right, good stuff.
I appreciate it, Luke.
That's got to be it.
It's got to be it.
I mean, we don't know, but like, he was in Phoenix.
There's a flight from Phoenix to Fayetteville.
How many people, the only person that would have flown from Phoenix to Fayetteville is, what, Musselman?
Yeah, and he was in Los Angeles.
But he was in Los Angeles.
So it's got to be, that's got to be it.
We found it in five minutes.
See, BBN.
They know everything.
Who's next?
That's awesome.
Dylan.
Dylan, go.
I'm nervous about the immediate success.
it's fair or important to have fair expectations.
But as far as I'm concerned, I'm a cat fan, not a cow fan.
I think Cal is a snake and I think he's a fraud.
I'll pay any amount of money it takes to be inrupt to boo him out of the building next season.
And I hope he loses every game he plays.
All right.
Well, that's just a harsh opinion.
I appreciate the call.
How much of the fan base do you think has that view?
That's not the view I have.
But how much of the fan base do you think has that harsh of an opinion?
I bet it's about 15% maybe, yeah?
What do you think, Bill?
I was going to go higher.
I was thinking 25%.
You're, I mean, you're the harsh.
Now, we haven't heard from Drew and Shannon.
I'll be interested.
I'm going to be interested what Drew's take is.
Because I can say that Drew's at the Masters.
What a day to miss.
But the Masters is a good excuse.
Drew was more done than I was.
I mean, if you're ranking the KSR people and how done they were,
I think it's fair to say Drew was the most done.
Number one.
Would you agree?
Yes.
Tyler was pretty done too.
Drew and Tyler were pretty done, I think.
Like, I'm the one that takes the public arrows, but Drew was a lot more done than me.
Where were you?
You think you were more or less done than me?
When the game ended, I was convinced there needs to.
to be a change.
And then I kind of had let myself suck back into, all right, one more run.
I believe one more year.
Let's go.
But see, in some ways, you are, I think, a lot of fans.
After it was over, you're like, I'm done.
Yeah.
And then you saw them and you go, okay, one more time.
Look how much, look how friendly they are with each other.
They're big friends.
You're the reason we have political advertisements in this country.
It's you.
People always go, who is it to these advertisements?
work on. Ryan Lemon is the answer to that question. Who's next? Cynthia. Cynthia, go ahead.
I actually feel a sense of relief that Cal is gone instead of the dread I was feeling,
because I felt like next season was going to be much of the same. So my question is, do you feel
any sense of relief that he's gone since you didn't have a relationship with him? And can you
describe how or if you'll attempt to build a close relationship with the new incoming coach? That's a
That's a good question.
Let me put it like this.
And I appreciate the call.
I,
this isn't about me, okay?
This is about UK.
As I've said over and over, if Kentucky wins,
not only am I happy personally,
it's good for everything we do.
So I would rather have a coach that doesn't want anything to do with me
and we win than a coach that is my friend and we lose.
I'm going to be honest with you about that.
With that said,
dreading next year a lot because I thought it was going to be unbelievably toxic all year.
I was dreading what happened this year, which is every time Kentucky won a game,
people were like, eat it, Matt Jones, throw it in your eye, John Cal Perry, up your face.
And like, I didn't enjoy that.
And then I also didn't like when we lost, if I said anything, people would go, you're so unfair
to Cal, you're a distraction.
So yeah, it stunk.
And I was ready for that to be over.
I was.
Now part of it will happen.
When Arkansas wins games, people are going to go,
see, ran off or br-woo, like I didn't run anybody off.
Cal ran himself off.
With that said, I think a fresh start was needed.
I do think it's important to realize we won't be as good next year as we hope, probably.
Probably not.
But I think we can be good.
Oh, absolutely.
The transfer portal gives us that edge.
Can we lose to Oakland in the first round?
See, that's my point.
For all this stuff of who can we get to replace Cal,
there's a lot of people that can lose to Oakland.
Everybody in this bar can lose to Oakland.
The question is who can win?
And there will be somebody out there.
And I will say this, whoever we hire,
even if we don't like the hire,
we owe it to them to give them a chance
because once they're the coach, we need them to succeed.
Yes.
Whoever it is, the worst most self-destructive act is to hire a coach and then not be happy before it even starts.
Right?
So will the new coach come in?
We'll have him on the show.
No, we'll have him on.
Yeah.
We'll have him on.
And I, there's no way the relationship could get worse.
So, you know, we'll have him on.
Who's next?
Mark Anthony.
Mark Anthony, go ahead.
Hey, Matt.
Hey, around Billy.
Matthew, I was getting a couple of calls this morning.
My wife hollered cows going to Arkansas.
So after I cleaned up my mess, it was a sudden shock, but not a surprise.
And I wondered if a little meeting between him and Mitt was a beard,
they both knew he was going.
Mitt said, look, we'll say status quo, and I'll give you a week.
Yeah, I don't think that's true.
I don't know.
My feeling.
Well, I mean, okay, but that's not what happened.
And I can't tell you why I know that, but just trust me, that's not what happened.
Okay.
Anyway, my overall feelings like Cynthia, all of a sudden this morning,
I feel like a weight's been lifted off my shoulders for some reason.
And we got, I think, a two-week window to hire a coach, Matt.
What do you think about that?
I think we got a week.
I think we got a week.
I think the portal, I appreciate the call.
Starting this week, the portal will be flooded with people.
season's over, it's going to be flooded.
We need to go get a coach to get a roster, right?
Yeah, that's why I asked if you thought we'd have a coach by Friday,
and I think they need one by Friday.
And if I were Mitch Barnhart and I were the U.K.
Athletic Department, the first thing I would do today is call Reed Shepard
and say, will you hold off until we pick a coach?
Yep.
That's what Sam Newton did with Tim Couch.
Yes, he did.
See him.
and looked at Tim Couch and said, before you run away, let me hire a coach and meet him.
Yep.
That was a different time, right?
It was a different time.
But I would say to Reed Shepard, just hang on, right?
Yeah.
Now, I don't think that'll work.
Seems like a pipe dream.
I'd still do it.
How long?
Doesn't hurt you to make the call.
Because Reed's got until the end of the month to decide.
Sure.
So, all right.
We'll take a break.
Come back.
Hour number two, 859, 2, 8-59-2-80-22.
