Welcome everyone to Kentucky Sports Radio. Tuesday, April the 9th. I'm Matt Jones here at the KS Bar and Grill. We're going to open up the phones.
Starting point is 00:02:22 If you called yesterday, you might have found yourself on college game day last night on the Clark's Pump and Shop phone line. They played like bits of eight calls from the show. 859-280-2287. A Vision Auto Glass Text Machine was 772-745-254 in this edition sponsored by the T.J. Smith-Lawvis. You call T.J. He'll make them pay. Yukon won the title last night.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Nobody cares. The only thing people care about is the whole situation with the UK coaching search and the Calipari situation. We got a lot to talk about. Ryan, first of all, it was cool that they've been. played all of our callers from KSR. Who knew Chester would lead into the NCAA championship game last night? I thought it was really cool.
Starting point is 00:03:07 That doesn't happen. So for our callers be on a national platform, I thought that was really, really cool. Yes, I did too. Billy is going to, Billy's here with us as well, stepping up to the big chair. So, Billy, are you, yesterday was a crazy day. I don't, I don't think people realize Billy how crazy it was. And I'm not sure anybody will long term, but it was crazy. It was not only you guys talk about college game day.
Starting point is 00:03:32 We had television stations coming up showing here and filming us, and The Madness did not stop after KSR stopped yesterday. Yeah, so let's just, let me just go where it is. And let me, I've saved a lot of this until the show, to be quite frank with you, because writing it online just leads to it going, like, insane. And yesterday, I think our fan base is crazy, but I think Arkansas's is more crazy. Not like we are more passionate,
Starting point is 00:04:02 but they, I think, genuinely are more crazy. And so, like, they took some statements I made and went nuts with them. And I was like, you know what? I want to watch this game, so we'll just put it up. But here, let me give you, I don't think I know 100% of what happened here.
Starting point is 00:04:16 As a matter of fact, I'm sure I don't. But I probably know 70 or 80, and it's wild. So as of 10.02 a.m., John Calgary still has not told Kentucky he's leaving. Wow. John Calaparry still has not had the official statement to Kentucky as required by his contract that he's talking to other schools. That still has not happened.
Starting point is 00:04:41 Yeah. So that's weird. It just is. It's just weird. And it's also hamstrung Kentucky. They cannot have official conversations with coach potential future coaches until Cal tells them there's a valid. vacancy, and he still has it. Now, I think everyone expects that will come today, but they expected it would come yesterday. I mean, to be honest with you, and honestly, they expected it would
Starting point is 00:05:13 come Sunday because by contract, he's supposed to say when he just initially talks to a school. And he violate, if he has an agreement with Arkansas, then he violated that contract. So I think there's a weird thought process of, and this is what everyone in Lexington from about two in the afternoon to nine in the evening was calling each other going. I mean, everyone, I called every single person in this phone that I thought might know something. And everybody had the same info and was going, we don't know. We don't know what's going on. He has just decided not to tell Kentucky. Arkansas scheduled at least one, maybe two press conferences that got canceled.
Starting point is 00:06:06 There were supposed to be one like, I want to say early this afternoon that got canceled. UK was scheduled to have a team meeting with the players got canceled. Nobody's exactly sure what's going on. Now, the assumption is he's still going to go to Arkansas. I don't think anybody's making the case. He will be the coach of Kentucky next year. At least I haven't heard that case. But he has not told people at Kentucky that he is...
Starting point is 00:06:36 Where are you going, sir? Huh? He just said they hope we're proud of ourselves. See... Wow. He got here early before the show started. He wanted to see the pre-show. You think he was...
Starting point is 00:06:53 was here for the free show. He saw the show. He even needed to see. I am really, I'm amazed. This is a perfect example of what I'm talking about, about how do you want to know what's going to hunt or not? This is, this is the truth. They, Kentucky can't do anything right now. They're waiting on Cal. Now, why is Cal doing that? I have no idea. I have absolutely no idea. the thing is even if he has violated his contract, in some ways there's really nothing to do about it. If he's leaving anyway, there's no damages clause. So like a contract, there's the meat of it,
Starting point is 00:07:35 and then if you violate it, there are damages. There's no damages, right? So if he goes to Arkansas, the contract's just void, right? Yeah. If he wanted to come back, that's when it would play into effect that he violated his contract, but I don't expect that's going to happen. But you now just have a situation
Starting point is 00:07:54 where everyone's waiting on cow, right? Everyone's waiting on cow, which made to me him walking the dog yesterday on Richmond Road, that was interesting to me. Not so much because of the visual of him pushing the stroller and the dog, but the fact that he knew there were cameras
Starting point is 00:08:15 outside of his house. They had been sitting there since about, noon and he intentionally walked in front of those cameras. He, I mean, he did that. He clearly did that on purpose. He can go on another road. He went on Richmond Road, one of the busiest streets in town, where the cameras were,
Starting point is 00:08:33 and walked right in front of them. And he did it, by the way, while the folks at the UK were waiting to hear from him about what he was going to do. I just find it fascinating. I do not know what it all means, but I find it fascinating. I have several questions. Can I ask you some questions? Yeah, and listen, I'll only answer what I can tell you. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:08:55 I don't know why it is nearly, it is now 40 hours since the story broke, and we still haven't had an official announcement. Walking the dog has been puzzling me since it happened, because that was about the time that they were supposed to have that players-only meeting at his house. The player's only meeting was supposed to be at his house. Yes. All the players were informed, and then an hour later, we're told it's not happening. But he uses it.
Starting point is 00:09:24 He takes that time. That's the time he goes out and walks his dog. That's exactly when he went and walked his dog. So is it in, I'm just trying to figure out what the psychology of it is. I want to show people that everything's okay. We're fine. Well, I don't think, I think everything, go back to Sunday night when the people in Arkansas reported that they had a deal with Cal.
Starting point is 00:09:44 I don't see any reason as of 10.10 a.m. that that result, which is that Cala Perry will be the coach at Arkansas, is any different now. But I don't understand what happened yesterday. I don't. And I will tell you, I don't think anyone at Kentucky understands, and I don't think the people close to the program really understand what's happening right now. And the people at Arkansas, all. I think they're still confident, but they're kind of like, hey, what's going on?
Starting point is 00:10:19 That leads me to my second question. There was some reports going yesterday that maybe he was having cold feet. I can't. There are people that say that. I can't confirm that. I have no idea. My assumption is, like, it's over, right? So, it's over. You can't come back. I mean, I I mean, like you, but, but I don't know. I will tell you, this is what I put on the KSR Plus board, and then immediately somebody screenshots it and puts it on social media. And so I just deleted it because I specifically said on the KSR Plus board, I have no idea if this is true, but there are people around Lexington saying he has cold feet.
Starting point is 00:11:04 I have no idea if that's true, and I want to be clear. I don't know that, but it is certainly what people said. But I don't know what the explanation for this 40-hour delay is. When have you ever heard of a story where someone accepts a job? It's reported. 40 hours later, there's not an official word from either school, and one of the schools still hasn't even heard from the coach yet. When have you ever heard that?
Starting point is 00:11:33 Never. Never. And, I mean, I was going to ask about the cold feet because maybe he did have some personal regrets after talking to some people closest to him. But it also feels like a middle finger to the university that they're going through this right now. I think the university, again, I'm not talking to Mitch or the people right next, but I think there's other people at the university. I know there's people frustrated going, we understand, but you've got to let us know. Because they can't, like all these reports you're hearing about Danny Hurley,
Starting point is 00:12:06 and I think, by the way, the three candidates that are at the top of the list are Danny Hurley, Billy Donovan, and Scott Drew, depending on who you ask, you'll hear who differ who's number one. So I can't say there's a lot of people that think it's Scott, there's a lot of people that think it's Billy, and then there's people that think you're asking Danny Hurley first no matter what. I don't know. But I am fairly confident those are the three. but they can't they can't officially contact any of them.
Starting point is 00:12:39 So, you know, I don't know, Ryan, I don't know what you do. I kind of feel bad for the university. I think they're in a tough spot. They're sitting here waiting on Cal, and I think Cal seems to intentionally be telling them nothing. Do you believe that it will come to a front this afternoon? It has to, doesn't it?
Starting point is 00:13:01 I think it does. But I thought it would yesterday. My assumption was this was going to happen yesterday and then starting at about 5 or 6 o'clock after that video and all that. I'm like, what's going on? Like, why is this taking so long? I love the fact, you know, Billy Gillespie's lasting image of us is him running away from Cutler. Now, Cal's lasting image, his last image for us is going to be walking the baby dog in a baby carriage. I mean, Lee Kay Howard got the footage of a lifetime there with him walking the baby carriage.
Starting point is 00:13:29 But, you know, Cal did that clearly on purpose, right? Like, clearly. It is one of the most high-profile roads and areas in all of Lexington. And he did. And he saw the cameras in front of his house. You know, that maybe he opened up the door, like, oh, what are they doing here? You could argue that TV cameras shouldn't, like, stand out in front of his house. And I might even agree with you on that, like, let the guy live.
Starting point is 00:13:56 but when you see them, you can't be surprised that they're there, you know. I'll remember that video for the rest of my life. I will too. It is unbelievable. I'm going to take up for Cal on one thing. I'm going to take up for Cal and one thing on the stroller. His dog is old and sick. Yes.
Starting point is 00:14:15 And so that stroller may genuinely be like, in case the dog gets tired, put him in the stroller. So I know it was weird with the stroller, but I'm going to take up for him on that. I'm not even a dog person, but that dog, I think, is old and sick, and he probably, if he took him for a walk, was like, well, if he can't walk anymore, I'd put him in the stroke. Yeah, he probably has to get that exercise every day. But the decision to put it in on Richmond Road is an odd decision, I think, right?
Starting point is 00:14:48 I'm a Billy. I'm going to remember that video clip for a long time, and it makes you chuckle a little bit because here he comes out pushing the little baby stroller. Coach, can any comment? No, nope, I'm just walking my dog. Dogs walking me. Dogs walking me, yeah. It's a crazy thing.
Starting point is 00:15:03 Now, I still say, like, he's going to Arkansas. I mean, I would still be shocked if he didn't go to Arkansas. But I think, objectively, you do have to say, like, him not telling U.K. It's odd. Is odd. And I don't, I mean, only he can say what the motivation for that is, but it's odd. So if he did want to return, it's my understanding. It's the breach of contract.
Starting point is 00:15:37 Okay. So like I'm just going, again, I feel like everything is so magnified that I want to be very careful. I'm not saying there's any evidence that he wants to return. Okay. But if he did, he is now in violation of his contract. if he talked to Arkansas. But you would have to prove he talked to Arkansas. And it would be messy.
Starting point is 00:16:05 Very. It would be very, very messy with a coach that you have legendary memories with. Right. And I don't think anybody wants that. So I think there'll be, here's where I think we are. I think there's folks sitting around at UK that will have a big sense of relief. if the phone call just comes today and he says I'm going to Arkansas. Because they can move forward.
Starting point is 00:16:32 Because then everyone can move forward. Right now this is a tough spot. They assume he's going to Arkansas. There's no reason not to believe he's going to Arkansas, but they can't do anything yet. Because technically, as of right now, he is the University of Kentucky basketball coach still. Yes.
Starting point is 00:16:49 He is technically still the University of Kentucky. If Congress were to subpoena Kentucky and say, right now, we need to interview the University of Kentucky basketball coach. Cal would be the one who would have to go. He's the guy. He's the guy. He's still the coach. Yep. So that's where we are.
Starting point is 00:17:08 This was the number one story yesterday on the day of the national championship. It's going to be a number one story again. Like I hope, you know, I hope Danny Hurley and Yukon enjoy it. But like this is still. And if we get through the end of the day and it hasn't happened, then it's really a story. Sure. because we have no reason to doubt what Bobby Bones told us yesterday. No, I think everyone at Arkansas thinks they have an agreement.
Starting point is 00:17:30 Yeah. But you're still late. So we'll see. And those cameras will probably be outside his house again today. Waiting for him to head out. You know, that's probably the case. And maybe it'll happen during the show. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:17:42 859-280, 2287. We'll talk about that. And then what about the three top choices for Kentucky? What do you think? If it's Danny Hurley, Billy Donovan, or Scott Drew, what do you think of those three guys? Do you like it? We'll deal with that next here on KSI.
Starting point is 00:18:03 Welcome back, Techie Sports Radio, 85928027. By the way, I don't know if you saw they put a sign, some fans, I assume, I don't know who put the sign, but somebody put a sign in Cow's Yard that said, we love you, Cal, or thank you, Cal. I thought that was nice. Very nice.
Starting point is 00:18:17 I still, part of the reason I want this to end well is I do want it to end well, because I do, I mean, we've had a great, you know, we've had a great run with him. So people shouldn't be like negative out the door, right? So I did think that was cool to see this morning. Whoever put that up, I have no idea. That's why I asked you yesterday, what do you think his legacy will be?
Starting point is 00:18:39 I think it's still positive long term. Don't you? I think so. Yeah. I think, you know, right now it still stings what has happened the last couple of years, but I think time heals all wounds. This is Mario's first day with us today. It's not always like this, I promise, Mario.
Starting point is 00:18:53 Like normally it's a little more laid back. I just got to tell you what happened. at the beginning of the show. Like there was a guy sitting at the bar. So first of all, we have a couple here from Winchester. It's their anniversary. Hey, happy anniversary.
Starting point is 00:19:06 Happy anniversary. You can come here and, by the way, see us, eat lunch, et cetera. Mario's here, and there was a guy sitting at the bar, which is normal, right? Like, there are people who sit here and watch the show. I mean, we're no open to 11, but they sit here. He was sitting there watching the show, and he heard us talking. And then, like, two minutes into it, he got up with, like, a look like he was very, very upset. and he was walking out
Starting point is 00:19:29 and I was like, hey man, where are you going? And he just said, I hope you're happy with yourself. And Billy, you say this is someone that texts you and trolls you? Well, I think. I mean, so I get a lot of anonymous text lines on the KSR pre-show text line, and for months, the same
Starting point is 00:19:45 guy has been trolling me. And so before the show this morning, he texted me, Billy, are you actually going to answer any text or acknowledge them today? Am I going to have to drive over to KS. Barr this morning? I said, come on over. Now, why would you say that, first of all? Like, why?
Starting point is 00:19:59 What are you, like, what are you trying to do? I'm not afraid to anybody. I mean, they got something to say it to my face. Billy, don't say it an honestly over a text line. We're not fighters. Have you ever fought? When have you fought? Middle school?
Starting point is 00:20:10 I was a fighter back in my day. Don't look at people and go. I said, bring it. Come on over. No, stop, Billy. And then he said, but to that point, he texted me and said, ha-ha got you at 10.9 a.m. Well, that's when that got left.
Starting point is 00:20:24 That was right after he left. Yeah. Billy, well, first of all, keep the number. Secondly, don't tell people to, like, you're not, you're not like Sylvester Stallone. You know that, right? I mean, it just, I got a tipping point, Matt, in months after trolling. Let's keep it, let's keep it tipped on the other side, okay? It is, especially during KSR, let's not incite anger.
Starting point is 00:20:50 You're filling in. I didn't think he was going to show up. You called his bluff. 8-9-2-80-2287. All right, for go, go the phones. All right. So I think there were three, I think there's three candidates. I've heard mixed things on what Nate Oates was.
Starting point is 00:21:09 I don't know if Nate Oates, I would have been surprised if Nate Oates had been hired, but I don't know if Nate Oates said no or they didn't ask, but it looks like Nate Oates won't be one of the people. Okay. By the way, that's disappointed me. I actually think Nate Oates would have been good. Me too. but be that as it may, for whatever reason, not going to be part of the process.
Starting point is 00:21:28 I think three people are going to get a phone call. Danny Hurley, Billy Donovan, Scott Drew. Maybe others will too. But everything I hear, these are the three main focuses. I would rank them, Danny Hurley, one, Billy Donovan, two, Scott Drew three. But I would actually be happy with all three. I think all three would succeed here. Looking at the reaction of the fan base, I think Danny Hurley would make people just jump
Starting point is 00:21:54 off the, you know, they'd be the most thrilled they could be. I think Billy Donovan, most people would be very, very happy. And I think Scott Drew, most people would be happy. Some people are like, yeah, I don't know. For me, I'm good with all of them. Where are you? Oh, I'm definitely good with all of them. I think all three would be a home run splash higher.
Starting point is 00:22:12 I think the fan base would definitely get excited about any of those three guys. I think there's going to be some with Scott Drew if it was him that would be like, well, he lost in the first weekend a lot, which is true. but he also won a title. Yeah. He also, you know, we always talk about, well, if we'd had the COVID tournament, Matt, we might have won. Here's what you forget. They were the number two team in America that year.
Starting point is 00:22:33 They were 27 and 4 that year. Dayton was number one, but they were number two. So you talk about could have won, that one, they could have won. They were also the number one overall seed the year after they won. Remember, they got upset by North Carolina in that crazy game where North Carolina got up 25 and then Baylor came back and tied it, etc. How would you feel about those three? I'm fine with any of those three. I think Scott Drew would obviously be the safest hire, but I think the big name.
Starting point is 00:22:59 Oh, Danny Hurley is the safest. Well, I mean, I guess you're right about that, but I just mean as somebody that could build this program back to its prominence. Dan Hurley's the hot name, though. I think he's unobtainable, apparently according to his wife last night. But are there any concerns? But he did. Like, he said you have to ask my wife about that, but he all, he didn't. He wasn't like, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:23:21 I think he'll listen. He's a Northeast man if you listen to him. You know what? That's nice. He can't say anything like that after they just won their second straight Titan national title. That's a very good point. You cannot ask the man on the court.
Starting point is 00:23:34 Because what's he going to say? Yeah, well, we'll see. Like, they're cutting down the nets. Like, he's got to get through that process. Now, I'm not saying he has any interest, but like he's got to get through that process before. It's like when you ask a dude, this happened for years in the locker room after we'd lose in the NCAA
Starting point is 00:23:49 tournament. Somebody go, you're going to come back, and then dudes would be like, yeah. But then they wouldn't. I mean, like, you came in the locker room. You just played. It's not the time. Could you see them leaving, though, after winning back-to-back titles?
Starting point is 00:23:59 No, but think about it. How many coaches in history have ever left after they've won a title? The only ones I can think of are tubby, cow. Yeah. And then somebody said Norm Sloan did it. Norm Sloan left NC State to go to Florida. But usually when a guy wins it. But you know what?
Starting point is 00:24:22 The same will be true of Scott Drew. Yeah. He won a title. Yes. People usually don't leave schools where they win titles. It's very rare. It's happened to us twice, but it's very rare. Be Billy Donovan, too.
Starting point is 00:24:34 Well, but he went to the NBA in between. I don't think that's not, that's happened a few times, I think. All right, we will take your calls when we come back. What do you think about what all happened? What about those three guys? Who would you like? That's next here on KS. Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:25:04 My mom is saying, Billy. People like that worry me. maybe just bring it down a notch. I'll cool it down a little bit, but I mean, I got Ryan Lemon right next to me. Yeah, that's not a lot. That's not a lot. He was a big boy.
Starting point is 00:25:21 He'd take all three of us. Oh, well, I mean, that's why I'm telling you, Billy. Show up. Billy? Stop. 859-280, 2287. Text machine is 772-7-7-7-4-5-254. What person writes,
Starting point is 00:25:35 I don't know this Mario kid, but how about this? be in your first two days with the last two days happening. You're like, what are you going to do in June when everybody's just sitting here and you're having to have Ryan do like the, you know, Jared McCain dance or something to create content? Like this is a whole other. I did notice there was a video put out of me yesterday. I had a lot of thigh showing, which was a little more than I.
Starting point is 00:25:57 I got to start remember that cameras are here. So maybe, you know, maybe you have to be a little more careful what I wear when we go places. Yeah, I didn't know we were having today. I didn't clean up today either. You did not. No. Yesterday I wore a UK shirt. I knew they were coming.
Starting point is 00:26:13 I got on sweatpants and a... First of all, you, like, even for you, this is dressing down. Yeah. Got my comfy clothes on today. Did you think it was possible that with all that was going on, there could be people here and cameras? Not cameras today. Well, you should have. All right.
Starting point is 00:26:30 859-280-2287. Who's up first? Eugene is up first. Eugene. Go ahead, sir. Hey, Mike, good to talk to you, buddy. I heard you on that Danny Cannell show this morning. I thought you done a really good job.
Starting point is 00:26:43 Thank you. I got two questions for you. What stops somebody from UK going down there to Cal's House or wherever he's at and saying, listen, son, did you talk to Arkansas or not? I don't know the answer to that question. I mean, nothing stops them in general, but I think there, this is just a guess. I have no idea, but I think there is a sense from UK. that they know that Cal Perry has talked to Arkansas.
Starting point is 00:27:12 He has not told them that that's in violation of the contract, and they don't want to do anything to violate it on their side, if that makes sense. So I think that's probably where we are right now, which is odd to me. If he's leaving, I don't understand why anyone, including Cal, cares about this, but it is odd. It's just odd.
Starting point is 00:27:33 It's all. That's right. and it just shows you where the program's at. I mean, he ain't coming back here. I don't care where he coaches next year, but it ain't going to be coaching the UK. I can just tell you that. That ain't going to happen.
Starting point is 00:27:45 We're not taking him back. We can't let our girlfriend go and talk to some other boy for a little while and see if she likes him and then come back and say, well, no, I don't like him as much. I'm going to stick with you. That just ain't going to happen. I agree with that. You know, that's not going to happen.
Starting point is 00:27:58 We've got to focus on who's our next coach. And I know UK can't come out and say nothing, but I think as fans, let's start talking about who we, going to get next and what do we like about him and what do we need i'm with you i agree with all that eugene i appreciate the call so let's talk about the pros and cons of each guy danny hurley crushes it here right he won two titles at yukon if he comes here he crushes it correct he he is the best college basketball coach at the moment right now period do you have any worry if it's danny hurl anything worry no he's a little whiny last night but like if he was with us we wouldn't care we'd
Starting point is 00:28:34 love it. Yeah. The energy person. No, I mean, he's, no, he's one of those dudes like DeMarcus Cousins was like Ron Slay at Tennessee, joke him, like pick the person. If he's on your team, you love him. If he's on another team, you want, right? So like, we would love it. Billy Donovan, any worry. I have a small one. Really? Yeah, my small worry is he's been out of college basketball for 10 years and recruiting is a different game. Yeah. I think he'd pick it up because I've said this, put everything else to the side, smart people find a way to get it done. That's a smart dude. He'd figure it out.
Starting point is 00:29:08 But this is different than when he did it, right? It's a lot different than when he was back in college coaching in 06-07, then they won back-to-back titles. But as an X-and-O coach, he's great. Yep. I mean, even with the Bills, Bulls and Thunder, he's been, like, he doesn't have the talent to win a title, but you ask other coaches, they all think he's a good coach.
Starting point is 00:29:27 He's got the Bulls in the playoffs. And that's a well-known name. I mean, if he's worried about recruiting, I think even these kids can recognize a name like that. Let me give you another downside with him. You don't know when he's available. Like he's in the play-in game, which will be like a week and a half from now. I think it's a week from this weekend. You'd have to wait until at least then.
Starting point is 00:29:47 And then if he wins the play in and makes the playoffs, you're going to have to at least go through one playoff series. So like there is a time thing with him. So what do you think? Will you make all the people who say he's in town right now? We mean all the people. What people? Who are these people? There have been a couple people.
Starting point is 00:30:04 What people? We had a guy that came in the restaurant for the show. Yeah, we also had a guy that came in a restaurant that wanted to fight Billy. That doesn't mean you listen to him. Do you really think he's in town? I have no basis to think that. Why do you think that? Just because people keep saying we...
Starting point is 00:30:20 People, who are these people? I got one guy I really trust that he said he knows he's in town. But I don't... Are you willing to stick your name? No. Okay, then why are you saying it? I'm asking your opinion. My opinion is until somebody I know tells, you and I both know this.
Starting point is 00:30:38 You and I hear a thousand things. Yes. Filtering what's real and what's not is a big part of this gig, and I'm not going to say somebody's in town unless I know they're in time. Plus, this town is so small, there is no way Billy Donovan's running around without somebody seeing it. Somebody getting a picture of him. Somebody's going to see it. Like, it's going to happen.
Starting point is 00:30:56 All right. So now, Scott Drew, as a coach. I think he's an amazing coach. Baylor might be the, Baylor had made the tournament once before he got there. Once in the history of the NCAA. He won a title there. The only thing I worry about here is like a personality fit.
Starting point is 00:31:13 Can he handle this madness? Yeah. Because he's a quiet, religious guy. Can he handle this? But if he can, I'm not worried about him as a coach. And as a recruiter, he's got maybe the best player in America coming to Baylor next year. And there's a good chance if he comes here,
Starting point is 00:31:30 be coming here. Do you have any worries? I've heard you cheat the position if you're not able to do those other things as the Kentucky coach. Are you worried about Scott not be able to do that? I think he would try. I worry a little bit that there's a segment of our fans that will not be excited about it. But here's the thing about that. When the game starts, if he wins, it won't matter. True. And if he loses, it won't matter. You know, it'll decide itself. Do you worry at all about Scott? No, and not only he's recruiting, but, you know, he's done really well bringing in transfers. that the team they won the championship with, then they have like five fifth year senior guys
Starting point is 00:32:05 or something like that. That's true. He gets a lot of transfers to come in. Now, what if it's after those three? I think if it's after those three, the net gets cast wide, okay? And I think there's people that I don't even know that are on the list.
Starting point is 00:32:17 If it gets past that three, here are three people that I think at least get a phone call. And I think those three are the top three. If any of those three want the job, it will be theirs before we go to somebody else. Okay? If you get past them, the three names I've heard that will likely to be contact,
Starting point is 00:32:38 Sean Miller, shock a smart, Chris Beard. So, now those I think are a lot bigger risk, all three of them for various reasons. And there's probably other people on that list that I have not heard. But that's where people need to think. I kind of consider those in my mind the two tiers. I also think, by the way, Jay Wright is on his own tier, meaning like, if they thought he'd do it, they would,
Starting point is 00:33:06 but I don't think anybody thinks that he would. Yeah. Who's up next? Jason is up next. Jason. Go ahead, Jason. How are you doing, Matt? What's going on? I have one question about with Cal waiting. Do you think, I think he's doing it on purpose because he's just trying to field a team before
Starting point is 00:33:22 he says yes, you know, because he's stalling on Kentucky. We can't get a coach. talking to us with the recruits that he has. So for me, I think he's just stalling just to fill a team so we can't keep the kids that we That's hard for it. Like, there are people who think that. I don't know that. Here's what I would say.
Starting point is 00:33:40 As of midday Monday, or let's say, as of when our show occurred Monday, there was at least one recruit that had committed who hadn't even heard from anybody yet. So, but could that be it? I guess it could. But, I mean, this can't go on forever. Like, if it doesn't happen today, I ain't going to be the only person asking these questions, right? At some point, the national media will get involved on it as well. So, appreciate the call.
Starting point is 00:34:10 But, I mean, I'm sure he wants to bring his recruits. Of course. And I would assume the recruits will go, the vast majority of it. I would assume that. Yeah, and that's why I was encouraging to hear Jack Pilgrim's reporting about Jane Quaiton. Where are you going? Up there. Okay, got you.
Starting point is 00:34:26 Because, I mean, if you could have Jane Quentin. Quentin's still on the next year's roster. I mean, that goes a long way. But that's an interesting thing. Jagen Quentin saying, I'm not certain I'm going. Okay, so let me use Jaden Quentin. This is how, I'm going to be honest with you, this is how Cal is hurting us a little bit right now. Jaden Quentin's told somebody, and I can't remember, forgive me, I don't remember which person reported this,
Starting point is 00:34:47 that he would like to hear from UK, but nobody's contacted. Well, Mitch would be the one to do that, but he can't. Because right now, Cal's still the basketball coach. So right now, even if the UK guys wanted to tell the dudes on the team and the recruits, hey, man, I want your impact put on who we're going to hire. They're not allowed to, they can't call any of them because Mitch, I think, probably thinks that would be disrespectful as long as we have a coach. So you have like a Jaden Quentin saying, I'd like to hear from UK.
Starting point is 00:35:17 And because Cal hasn't resigned, UK can't contact them. That puts them in a tough spot. It does. I think it puts them in a tough spot. Okay, I want to ask you this because people are going to maybe ask us later. So if Kentucky does do something like that and they are in violation of the contract, would they owe Cal money? Yeah, but I don't think Kentucky is it. How can Kentucky be in violation?
Starting point is 00:35:42 If he talked to Arkansas, it's over. And according to Bobby Bones, he talked to him on Friday. Talk to Arkansas even on Friday. Well, but, you know, the question is, did Cal talk to him? Or did something? I mean, there's, you know. This cow does not have an agent? Cal does not have an agent, but he has a couple of people that sort of act on his behalf.
Starting point is 00:36:00 But he doesn't. That's another hiccup. He does not have an official agent. So that's weird. Like every other coach I know of has an agent. Cal doesn't. Well, that's different. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:13 Now, I'm sure he has lawyers that help him, but he doesn't have an agent. And so that's different, too. So Bluegrass Home Center is open in London, Kentucky. You can visit bluegrasshomecenter.com. family-owned business specialist. Two, three, four, and five bedroom. Manufactured homes are there. They're beautifully designed with custom, quality-finished drywall.
Starting point is 00:36:35 It's all there at bluegrasshomecenter.com. They start as low as $48,900. Go visit their showroom in London on Rudy Bear Road or call 606-215-3300. It's bluegrasshomecenter.com. We'll take a break. Take a call. KSA. Welcome back.
Starting point is 00:36:58 It is Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-2-2-80-22-87. here at KS. Barb, getting ready for whatever today brings. I don't know. If we get back here tomorrow and we're still in the same position, then that's weird. Well, even after our three-hour show yesterday, we leave and they kind of had all the drama over the, quote, players meeting, and then all the drama over the quote, does he have cold feet, then all the drama last night, like, quote, he really hasn't signed anything yet. I mean, it's kind of been non-stop. Yeah, but I'm kind of with Eugene. I'm all assume he's gone.
Starting point is 00:37:30 So we got to figure out who it is. And I do think it's important for people to compartmentalize this. The question about the next coach is not the next coach or cow. Cow's gone. People need to understand that. Like he's gone. So the question then become, and let me say this, I know there's like this idea, quote-unquote, UK fans ran him off. He's also a grown man.
Starting point is 00:37:57 He made that decision. He's told his players for years, ignore the clutter, right? Yep. This is the gold standard, all this. He made the decision. I respect it. If I was him, I probably would have made the same decision.
Starting point is 00:38:11 So I completely respect him. I'm not criticizing him for it. But that's his decision. And once he makes that decision, you know, I thank him for the 10 years he was here. But at the same time, I'm not going to like weep that he was unfairly treated. He had four years here of very, poor coaching in terms of results. I'm not saying actually X's and O's, but just results. And so,
Starting point is 00:38:37 you know, had he come back, we thought he was coming back. Yes. What did I say? We all need to rally and hope we win every game. But now that he's gone, you can't cry over spilled milk. Right. Now it's time for what's next. Because if you sit there and sit at home and look at the picture of your ex and go, man, that was great, then you're just going to be sitting there. at home by yourself. So, but let's say your ex comes back and is really sorry and wants to get back together. She still ain't getting back together with you. Well, now that's a different question. Well, that's okay. Well, that's, we'll get, let me talk about that. Who's up next? Jeff is up next. Jeff, go ahead, Jeff.
Starting point is 00:39:18 Hey, guys. I have a concern, and my concern is if we get past this top three, that the media narrative is going to continue to shovel dirt on us. You have Seth, Greenberg acting like a Calapologist on there. Matt, would you ever consider going on there and presenting our side of the story? I've been on all the ESPN radio shows in the last two days. Now, they haven't asked me to be on TV. I can't make them put me on television. But Seth, look, Seth is Cowell's best friend. I'm not going to, I'm not going to hate on Seth, but like he's Cal's best friend. But what he's saying is absolute nonsense that Kentucky, like, like that comment he made yesterday about Cala Perry's.
Starting point is 00:40:02 not leaving Kentucky. He's having a new future with Arkansas. What does that even mean? Like, you can't have a new future with somebody else unless you leave the other one. He left. He can, Seth can use all the verbs he wants about he's not leaving. He's still, like, no, he left. Okay. And Seth has taken up for, I mean, when Seth says, well, you know, he's doing fine. We lost to Oakland and St. Go look through our history. It's two of our worst losses in the history of this school. I just don't want to hear that everything has been normal. It's not.
Starting point is 00:40:39 And if the national media says otherwise, they're wrong. Seth said that, but did you see what Stephen A and Shannon Sharp said? They laughed at him. And that's how I think most of the people in the country look at it. The guys in college basketball like Jay Billis and Jay Williams and Seth, and I really like the Js. But they're friends with Cal. They're not objective.
Starting point is 00:41:01 they can't criticizing. No. I like the Scott Drew prospect, and I'm becoming warmer to the shock of smart prospect. Well, it's going to, you know, I'm going to keep with Tier 1 because I think we're going to get one of those guys. If we get to Tier 2, it's a lot.
Starting point is 00:41:22 Kind of ludicrous, though. Why is it ludicrous? Well, he's already told us no twice. But what if he's interesting? But what if he's interesting? But what? But what if he is interested? But he's, you know, he said he doesn't like to recruit.
Starting point is 00:41:36 I think your point on being out of the loop is valid. I mean, if he truly was interested, that's different. But I don't, my two cents from way over here, I don't think that's true. Yeah. Well, I don't know. And I appreciate the call. I don't know if he's interested or not. But if he is interested, Ryan, you got to call it, right?
Starting point is 00:41:56 I think it's why he's on your top tier list. If he is interested, he's got to be somebody that you've got to go talk to. Yeah, you have to. I mean, are you going to take Shaka Smart over Billy Donovan? No. No. You got to at least have the conversation with him. Who's up next?
Starting point is 00:42:14 Joe is up next. Joe, go ahead, Joe. Thanks a lot, Matt. Man, I'm going to bring up something, and this is nothing bad, but is Coach Cal playing a delay game on purpose, like maybe a politician is doing right now? or I hate to even think about that. I don't know. I don't want to say that he is because I don't know his mindset.
Starting point is 00:42:38 Here's what I struggle with, to be honest with you, Joe. I don't understand what the rational reason for him not to tell UK is, right? If he knows he's leaving, why wouldn't you just tell UK on the way out? like like i i struggle for people the i do not want to think that john calgary on his way out wants to give the u.k administration like a middle finger Mitch sat with him on tv and stuck his neck out for it right so but if that's not the explanation what is the explanation what is the explanation what is the explanation for not saying to uk you're leaving i don't okay matt If it's a delay game, it's going to happen.
Starting point is 00:43:27 Again, my pick is Billy Donovan. If you got a way for Billy to say yes, so be it. I got against Mr. Drew, but I'm a North East man when it comes to coaches. And my vote would be for Billy Donovan, but I would love Scott Drew if you came to. But my first is for Billy Donovan. All right. Well, I appreciate the call. Do you, uh, all right, let's say that for Billy Donovan, you had to wait until they lost in the playing game, which is waiting to.
Starting point is 00:43:54 and a half weeks. Would you do it? I think if you got a chance to get one of those three guys and he's the only one that's, yeah, I'm waiting. You're going to wait two and a half weeks? Yeah, yeah, I would. Instead of rushing it to just so you can start the portal activities. And who do they play in the playing game? We're rooting for that team. Atlanta, I think. Okay, we're all big Hawks fan. Can you tell me who's on the Hawks?
Starting point is 00:44:15 Trey Young. Yes. Tell me about at least one other person. DeKimbe Mutumbo. I don't think he's on there. We will take a break. Come back. Hour number two here at KS. Farr.
