Starting point is 00:02:20 No. The odds of May. Here at the Kass Bar and Grill, it is a beautiful. Beautiful, beautiful day. Here in Lexington, Kentucky, we got birds chirping. It's Wings Day, dollar wings all over the place, or at least here. You can give us Shal and Clark's Pump and Shop phone line 859-280-287. Avision Glass, text machine 772-7-7-2-754 in this edition.

We got the doors open, so it's breeze. sure you can find a better day to eat in this restaurant than this temperature perfect food
Starting point is 00:03:03 uh inexpensive and ryan and drew here for you to gock at and mario to take videos of you how you doing i love coming here this time of year when the garage doors are open you can sit out on the patio it's awesome it's kind of a breezy kind of cool i love it perfect day perfect day it's good uh before derby weekend we got a lot of stuff to get to today first of all jerry tippedon is going to be on the show now that is a sentence i never thought i would say 12 years ago. If you had said to me, I'm going to have Jerry Tipton on the radio. I would have never believed it. But I'm very excited about it. I actually spent last night, I read about the first 100 pages of his book, and it's really interesting. I'm being serious. Like, between me and you,
Starting point is 00:03:45 I'm not a big memoir book person, because usually, like, everybody thinks their life is more interesting than you think their life is. But Jerry keeps it to the stories of what the people, other than him. And so it's very, I've really enjoyed it. And he's going to be on here and looking forward to it. I woke up this morning with Jerry's book on my chest where I was into it last night, read straight, not that I fell asleep because it was boring, but I couldn't put it down. I literally fell asleep reading it at like 1 a.m. So I've been into it as well. Well, it was just also interesting. Like he's not doing it from a tell salacious stories, but he just tells stuff that like is interesting, that some of which I'd forgotten, some of which was before my time.
Starting point is 00:04:25 So he's going to be on here. And, I mean, seriously, like, if you had gone back to 15, 12 years ago and said Jerry Tipton would be on KSR, you would have never imagined it, right? No. But I'm telling you, he is probably the most respected sports journalist this state has ever had. I mean, he really is. And he acknowledges in the book that he's known as a curmudgeon. And I heard right away.
Starting point is 00:04:47 I heard some good stories about him from some of his colleagues I want to ask him about on the air, just like about him as a person that I think are interesting. But before we get to that, a few things. First of all, if you followed my lead and bet against the Reds last night, win. I did. Yes. I did. Don't clap.
Starting point is 00:05:05 I wanted the Reds to win. I just knew they wouldn't with Nick Martinez. And they lost the game, so you should have made a lot of money on that. Candelario, who I said stunk, he got two hits and a home run. And so he stinks, but now I hope he keeps stinking. So the Reds are going to call you today with another player. They want you to trash another. Just keep trashing the players.
Starting point is 00:05:28 Today I think they'll lose, but I'm not locking it up today. Yesterday was a lock. Anytime Nick Martinez shows up in the rotation, just go ahead and bet on the other team, Drew. That's the way to work. I followed your lead yesterday, and I'm now, you know, when someone's on a heater, I'm riding it. So whatever you want to throw out, I'm in for more reds.
Starting point is 00:05:47 I've been on a heater for a little bit. Honestly, if they hadn't had that crazy ending of the next game, I would be on like a 12 bet win. streak. I ended up losing that one because I had the Knicks. We'll talk about that in a minute. But more than anything, I want to start with two major stories, both of which involve Ryan. Number one, Ryan, we need to talk about you being online. All right. Now, as you know, as you know, I'm big on you being online, especially while I'm gone. Yes. Right? Because, you know, in terms of promoting, I'm probably the biggest promoter of the show. I have a huge social media account.
Starting point is 00:06:23 And so while I'm gone, I've been very clear to people like, all right, Drew already does this. But Ryan, Shannon, Billy, we brought Mario on. It's going to be very important to promote KSR while I'm gone. Keep the momentum going. And so part of that was yesterday Mario is setting up our YouTube channel. We have a KSR, the show YouTube channel. We now have an Instagram page. We're going to have a TikTok.
Starting point is 00:06:48 And some of it has been getting you registered for things that weren't Twitter. That's true because Twitter was my only social media platform forever. So now you're on Facebook? On that bridge Facebook group. You do good. You post occasionally. Try to make fun of you guys once in a while. You do a good job with that.
Starting point is 00:07:05 You're on last night. You joined KSR Plus. Came in hot, arguing with people posting pictures. But Ryan, and listening to Ryan try to understand how to use that was kind of fun, right? You guys have to help me. That's a lot. I mean, there's a lot going on there, and I don't know. It's a message, but it's the oldest form of technology.
Starting point is 00:07:27 There are 90-year-olds that have been doing that for 30 years. So do you just go and you look at the different chat rooms? Threads, pick on the threads? It's not a chat rooms. He thinks this is AOL in 2000. You go on the chat room, yes. They have titles. You click what you're interested in.
Starting point is 00:07:47 So, yeah, there'll be a title that'll say, you know, Kobe Brea coming to Kentucky question. you mark and you click on it and you will see what people post and then you can reply and give your thoughts so there was a post about you because you your scoop was not scoop correct Shannon yeah scoop lemon you got to play the song I thought we only played it when he had scoop well but we also need to know when he doesn't so the great ossibore thing went away and you went on there and you just, you felt like you had to reply to every single person who wrote. You don't have to do that. I analogize the great awesome or story to diarrhea. Okay, not yet. Okay, not yet. Okay, not yet. I'm not ready for that. Well, we'll come back on the board. Yeah, let's leave that on the board.
Starting point is 00:08:38 Let's leave that as a tease. Okay, so, but then, so my point is you're adding new things, right? And I'm proud of you for that. Well, thank you. I want you to look at me. I'm proud of you. Well, thank you. Your online presence is growing. Your, your Facebook. your message board thread eventually yeah you're on instagram eventually one day we'll get you on tic-tok or at least we'll be on mario's tic-tok but now back to your twitter all right now that's your old standby that's what i go to is my go-to it's like 1115 at night i'm in bed i am too all right you're in bed too and i'm get on there uh to sort of see what people are saying before i turned the phone off for the night yes and you have posted a picture of
Starting point is 00:09:24 of a woman. Susanna Hoffs. Susanna Hoffs. Who is that person? Lead singer of the Bengals. The Bengals. Actually, someone else had posted it. Yeah, I got it like 50 times. Who loves the way
Starting point is 00:09:36 Susanna Hoffs looked in? She's in a bikini. Yeah. And you just retweet it and raise your hand. Raise my hand as many times as I could. Okay. Yes.
Starting point is 00:09:47 I think there was six hand raises. There were six hand raised. You only have two hands. And by the way, each hand that's raised made me more uncomfortable. You kept raising hands. And immediately, Twitter starts calling you,
Starting point is 00:10:06 well, horny, is what they was the word they would use. Got that a lot. Yeah, I mean, that was the word. And I said, I responded to you, go to bed. Yes, you did. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:16 Why did you do that at 11.15 at night? Did you, what, what was the reason? I'm like you. I was in bed. Kind of check on my phone. for I went to sleep, but like 15 people had sent me that. And I'm like, well, this is pretty hot. I should probably give my girl some props.
Starting point is 00:10:32 She's 62 years old, still kicking it. I think she deserved a little handraise. Okay. Yeah. But you understand. Like, that's frowned upon. No, I don't understand. Why do we act like when people get old, they can't be thirsty for women?
Starting point is 00:10:49 Shannon, I don't disagree with you. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it. like you know come on let the guy be a man i'm not saying that there's anything wrong with it like theoretically yeah yeah but there does come an age that they sort of and i'm not saying you're at it we know people we won't get into who it is that we think maybe sometimes do that too much right and i just wondered like why you decided it i don't remember you ever doing that before what made you decide to do it last night i'm not really for sure Sure. I just thought it was really...
Starting point is 00:11:25 Were you by yourself? I was by myself. Was that part of it? Maybe? I look at it as I would never do it to somebody younger than me. She was younger than you in that picture. Oh, yeah, she was. I was thinking of her, you know, 62 years old today.
Starting point is 00:11:37 Okay, if you had posted a 62-year-old... Yeah. And I've retweeted her playing the guitar at 62 years old. Okay. You know, pow-tick or pow-pow. I'm not criticizing. I just, Drew, wasn't expecting it. And I think maybe what happened.
Starting point is 00:11:53 happened is he has all this new social media and it's kind of making him look a little past the parameters of the others right maybe a little and it was just so different out of him in the time of day it just made a lot of us wonder what was going all over there with ryan women part of we could see all your hands you've been worse me just put one hand up yeah but so six hand i was in bed too and abby was scrolling she was like what is ron what is ron what is That's what I'm doing. I had two different people texting me going, go stop, Ryan. Because I think people were worried that you're going to keep going.
Starting point is 00:12:31 So you stopped there, and that's good, and it's okay. I got out of the KSR chat room box. It's not a chat room. And we're just ready to go to sleep. I thought, well, that's a pleasant vision to go to sleep too. I don't, no need to describe it. I like Ryan Limit after dark. I think you should do it every night.
Starting point is 00:12:46 Maybe I should reenact that photo. You do have a son that's at high school. school. I mean, think of, yeah, that's true. So, so anyway, that was, now, the other thing is great, Oswald. It's, it, I, Goodman announced it earlier today. A lot of people didn't seem to believe him. I've said to you, if Goodman's talking about UK stuff now, I think in this new staff, he's probably got pretty good info. That doesn't mean he's always going to be right, but he'll be, I mean, he's not making stuff up in this, but I didn't get confirmation until late at night,
Starting point is 00:13:22 but it ends up in the same place, which is at Great Osabor and UK are out. Ryan, that was scoop. Yeah. So what happened? I think it was, you know, Ossebor wanted to wait, get his parents over here, make the visit with the family, and Kentucky was not ready to wait when they had other guys that were standing in line ready to take that spot. So I think that's kind of what it came down to, you know, the dude from Wake Forest
Starting point is 00:13:44 and the dude they got yesterday, they jumped at the chance, and Great Osabore is kind of odd man out, I think. Yeah, they would still take him, though. I want to be, I would have still taken him. I think it kind of played out like this. They had Osabor on campus. Their goal was to get the first visit and lock him up. Osabor was very committed to taking all of his visits,
Starting point is 00:14:08 going to Louisville, Texas Tech, and Washington. I think Washington's the big one because I think there's a belief that they'll match or exceed whatever anybody else would offer. Kentucky was very adamant on, you're here. let's get it done. I don't think they thought they were going to get Garrison. I think Garrison kind of came out of nowhere for them. I think, I mean, remember, he didn't even visit.
Starting point is 00:14:31 And he visited the other schools. They get the call that he's willing to do it. And they say, all right. And then we're going to have to start looking at this stuff a little bit, Drew, like there's a salary cap. There's not a salary cap, but you only have so much money to spend. And I think maybe when you don't have a big, you're willing to pay X
Starting point is 00:14:52 and then when you do you might be only willing to pay Y and the person still wants X and you just have to say well it's not going to happen so that's kind of what I think happened I mean I think they still would love him but I think he's going to fetch more than they want to pay
Starting point is 00:15:10 and I don't think any of these schools Arkansas might be different but I kind of doubt they are either I don't think any of these schools is like we're just going to pay whatever, right? So you're managing, for lack of a better term, your salary cap, and maybe once they took Garrison, then that cap number came down for Osabor and it didn't work out. Yeah, and I'll defend Scoop a little bit.
Starting point is 00:15:36 Gray was in a, well, great spot with UK. It seemed to be pretty much done. No, he told him he was coming. He told him he was coming pending the visit. And then he added other. So I think UK had already penciled him in on that board. He's coming. Then he says, I'm also going to visit other three schools and they go, okay, now wait a minute.
Starting point is 00:15:57 If it's over, why are you visiting? And then they decided, well, we got to look at other things too. And it ends up being crazy. You would have hated to lose both of them. Yeah. Right. Right. If you're the staff, like you're saying, you got to look today, the portal closes.
Starting point is 00:16:09 So if you wait on Great Austin Board to take those four visits, you're waiting at least another week or two and then say he does decide, oh, sorry, he changed my mind with Washington. you can't just be stuck on down the road where you're all in on him. So if that's how it went down, it seems to be the case. I'm glad they took Garrison as much as I want great Osabor. And hopefully if we're believing this, you know, got the one pot of money and kind of a salary cap thing, hopefully they're saving a good chunk that can go towards a ball handling guard because that's what this team really is.
Starting point is 00:16:36 No, no, they have. We're good on Big Men, right? Well, maybe some depth. I think they have one more spot that they could spend a significant amount of money on. And they're just trying to figure out which one it is. Okay. I'm thinking it's Jackson Robinson. I also think, though, there may be a person. There's a person who is contemplating
Starting point is 00:16:53 entering the portal today that if they do, they're coming to Kentucky, but they might not come. Today's the day, right? Today's the final day. So I think part of it is they also want to wait and see what happens in the next 24 hours, and we'll see what it is. And if it's the case where it's kind of,
Starting point is 00:17:07 you're looking at your pot of money, you're like, well, we could give this to Jackson Robinson or Great Ossebor. Well, as much as I love Great Ossebor, I'm voting for Jackson Robinson on that too. You are at this point, yeah. 859-280-2287. We're here with Mr. Technology.
Starting point is 00:17:21 Ryan Lemon is six hands, and we'll talk more about recruiting. Jerry Tipton at 11 o'clock, and I got a special surprise coming at 10.30. What? We don't even know. I'll tell you in the next segment. Nobody knows.
Starting point is 00:17:34 And we'll do it right after this. KS.I. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. It's going to be... We got something big coming at 1030. I'm not going to lie to you. I don't think one person out there knows it's happening.
Starting point is 00:17:51 Susanna Hoffs? She coming to see Ryan? She's not coming on. No, no. This is, wow. But for one of, well, I'm going to give a little more hint at the end of this segment. Okay. And then we'll do it right off the bat.
Starting point is 00:18:04 At 10.30. A surprise. 1030, there's a surprise. Okay. And it's not Jerry Tipton popping out of a cake. This is a different surprise than Tipton. So it's be ready for it. 859-2-80-2287.
Starting point is 00:18:16 Tax machine, 772-745254. One person writes, Matt, don't try to change Ryan. He's done things his own middle of the road half-assed way for the last 12 years, and it's made him a star. Let him do his thing. Should we let you cook? I got a lot to learn.
Starting point is 00:18:38 I'm willing to admit, like, I still don't know how this board works. But, like, okay, so for two months, like, I'm gone. Yeah. And in order to do it, like, I'm staying off the grid. I mean, I'm going to be like, I'm not going to, I mean, I might tweet about my trip or something, but I'm not going to follow the sports. Like, it's up to you. It's up to the, really, more than anything, you two.
Starting point is 00:19:03 Shannon's part of it. Mario will be a big part of it, Billy. But really, I'm relying on the two, the anchors here. And I'm looking to you for leadership. Well, that's a lot of pressure. Because you have to be the leader. Like you see that young, impressionable Mario? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:21 He is looking to you for guidance while I'm gone. He's spending this six weeks learning the ropes from me, and then he's going to look at you and say, lead me, dear Lemon, and that's what you're going to be doing. God help us all. You've been thinking about these summer shows? This is what you're going to be doing. We have a commitment, by the way.
Starting point is 00:19:39 Tom Hart is doing Wednesdays all summer. Okay. So it'll be Tom Hart Wednesdays with you all. Yes. So it'll be Tom Hart hosting from afar with you all as a co-host. We probably will have somebody Monday and Friday, and then Tuesdays and Thursdays are just you guys. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:54 We got this. We got it. We got it. Tuesdays and Thursdays are Thursdays. Tuesdays and Thursdays are you're all's day. But listen, you need to be prepared every day, okay? Yeah. Because these people are going to know less about Kentucky than you all,
Starting point is 00:20:06 so you have to come in and ready to rock. I guess we can tell him now we had a conversation with Tom Hart at the SEC tournament. And I came up to him and said, hey, man, I hear you're going to be doing like every Monday with us at the summer. and he got this blank look on his face, he's like, what? No, it's Wednesday. And I talked to him yesterday, and he's good. He's good. Well, that'll be good.
Starting point is 00:20:25 That's one day of the week. What about the other four? Well, a lot of it's going to be you. I've got some, I've got a notes with show topics already, Ryan. I'm brainstorming head. I'm sure you're doing that thinking about future shows. I'm more focused on KS Bar. I've been trying to set stuff up with some of the gas bar.
Starting point is 00:20:39 You're doing good for both of those things. All right, Calapari's house went on the market this morning. $4 million. $4 million. dollars it went on at like 905 and i had four people texted to me within 30 seconds this is my question do you people get these zillow alerts to your phone is that what people do uh-huh yeah you can set it up when you get an alert on your phone immediately as soon as a house in lexington if you want to you can set like the price range and things so maybe they said you know 300 000 and over and when i
Starting point is 00:21:07 went to zillow it had only been up there for four minutes and so people clearly had it four million I don't know. That's a pretty expensive house. Let me ask you this. Is the house Shannon worth more because Cal Cald-in lived in it? I think it probably is. Yeah, I think if there's a celebrity that lived in that house, you can buy that and say, I'm living in John Calipari's old house. You're a realtor. Is it worth more the fact that it's Cal's house? It absolutely. How much more? So what would it be if Bob Jenkins lived there? Well, I looked up the zestment. So what's the zestment? So what's the zestimate? Low range was 3.7 to 4.1.
Starting point is 00:21:47 I guess it depends on if it's all pimped out. So that's the estimate not including that it was cows? Correct. Okay, so it would be three points. So that's within the rain. Yeah, yeah. I thought maybe it was way overpriced, but according to Zillow, it's kind of right there in the ballpark. How long do you think it takes to sell?
Starting point is 00:22:02 Man, the buyer pool to buy a $4 million house is very small, very small. But somebody's going to want to say they bought a house, right? And again, that's a high profile area, man. A lot of people don't want to live, like, right there on Richmond Road. It's hard to turn left, too. Very hard to turn left. Can't, yeah, very, well, you can go out the back. Yeah, there's an exit out the back to go.
Starting point is 00:22:26 Good place to ride your VESPA around the neighborhood. So you expect it to sell, you know the market. Will it sell within the day? No. How long will it take? I bet it takes a month or two. Oh, a month or two? Because, man, like I said, that buyer pool.
Starting point is 00:22:40 How many houses in Lexington are $4 million or more? I may be the only one on the market right now. There's that one. It's 12 million out there on the long road. Is that Tim Couches? It's been there a while too long. No, it's some oil guy, coal guy from Hazard, I think. And what's that monthly payment?
Starting point is 00:22:56 If you buy a $4 million house, good grief, even 20% down, that's a huge monthly payment. So you didn't get the list. I didn't get the listed. I missed out on that one. But, you know, my Stockton Mortgage ad for the last couple weeks will all be about that house. You want to get qualified? Go to Stock to Mortgage. All right.
Starting point is 00:23:12 So here's the surprise. We're about to, in three minutes, get a football commitment that's going to shock people. Really? Yeah. Coming out of, I don't think anybody's going to see it coming. And it's a very highly ranked player. And they're going to come on here and do it on this show. And I think it will send shivers.
Starting point is 00:23:39 Shivers. I mean, I don't really know what the recruiting world is like in terms of shivers, but I think there's going to at least be trembles out there. Chilly bumps? There's going to at least be chili bumps because I don't know that people necessarily are going to see coming what's going to happen here in the next 40s. So you're going to roll the dice here? Well, unless the person does what Shannon's always worried about.
Starting point is 00:24:02 One of these days. Which is coming on here and picking somebody else, but I don't think that's going to happen. Okay, good. So I'm not going to say who it is. All right. All right. I'm just going to let them come and do their things. Nice.
Starting point is 00:24:12 They're going to come on here. I talked to him last night. Yeah. They're ready to go. Okay. And then everybody will find out at the same time. Isn't that exciting? Very exciting.
Starting point is 00:24:20 Normally, like, people kind of have already figured it out. How long anybody's figured it out? Okay. So when we come back, Shannon's favorite song is going to be playing, and we will have a surprise commitment right after this to football. Right. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Starting point is 00:24:47 Welcome back, Techie Sports Radio. We are now happy to be joined on the phone, folks, by four-star running back out of Cleveland, Ohio, Marquise Davis. Marquise, how are you, sir? I'm doing good than you. Doing great. So I hear through the grapevine that you, that you, you are ready to make your college commitment. Let everybody know who all you were considering, and then let's tell us where you're going to play school, play college. So out of the multiple, out of the 32 hours that I have, I like to commit to the University of Kentucky. Nice. Nice. Now, this is a big time get for Kentucky, by the way. This is one of us, the best running backs in the nation. Marquise, you're out of Cleveland.
Starting point is 00:25:36 Congratulations. What made you decide to pick UK? It just felt like home. The personal standpoint, everybody was real welcoming, showed me the most love. They are from Ohio. So like, why not? Yeah, you are from Ohio. I'm sure probably Vince Merrill played a big part in that with his Ohio connections. Am I right? Yeah, absolutely. So what's he like recruiting? How did he sell you on UK? Pretty much like, basically like the relationship-wise and like trustworthy because like baseball from the past, they help most people who was in trouble and make sure they didn't
Starting point is 00:26:17 fall behind. So I was going to make sure I want to be around somebody I could trust. That's awesome. Now, people who haven't seen you play, what's your running style like? What are you like as a player? I say my speed plays a big factor in my, in the way I play. And like the type of way that I have because like I weigh around two. and I can move like a 190.
Starting point is 00:26:41 Oh, look at that. 206, but moves like he's 190. He's like Ryan Lemon. There we go. Isn't it? Well, Marquise, congratulations. I know the staff is excited, and this is a great get. Kentucky fans welcome you, and we'll see you when you end up in Lexington, okay?
Starting point is 00:26:58 Thank you. I appreciate it. There you go. Marquis Davis running back out of Cleveland. Pick Kentucky, just so you know, there were 10 predictions on the crystal ball for this kid. All 10 of them had him going to Michigan, and instead, he's kicking Kentucky. Michigan, the team that just won the championship, now a commitment flips to Kentucky. Kentucky just got a cornerback who left Michigan to come to Kentucky. Two guys leaving the national
Starting point is 00:27:24 champs coming to Kentucky. That's how about keeping it quiet? He decided he wanted to do it. I think he was going to make a public announcement later today and suggested, hey, why don't you do on the show? He was like, yes. And so then they kept it quiet until right now. Isn't that amazing? I didn't hear. I don't think anybody had a clue. Very quiet.
Starting point is 00:27:44 Michigan really thought they had this guy. There's several blog posts about it as a top target and what he can bring. As you said, there were several picks for him online. UK just came in and took him away from the Wolverines. Take him away. How about, I mean, Ray Davis gets drafted. Obviously, Chris Rodriguez, Benny Snell. And then you're getting the kid from Ohio State next year that's coming in.
Starting point is 00:28:05 And now this one as well. Huge get for the football staff wanted to remind people, yeah, I know they're getting basketball players over the hair, but we're going to get some guys too. We don't, to beat Michigan for a running back right after they've come off the night. I know they had a coaching change, but still, that's pretty impressed. It's amazing what this staff can do. And I'm telling you, if there's an Ohio connection, my money's on Vince every single time. Well, heck of a get there. 859-280-2287.
Starting point is 00:28:33 One more thing before we get to the phones. congrats to Marquis Davis and the UK football staff. John Cal Perry yesterday. Did you see what he said? About the House of Cal or University of Cow or something? It actually wasn't him. It was a player. Somebody interviewed one of the players that Kentucky,
Starting point is 00:28:52 so the kids down to like Kentucky, Arkansas, and Duke maybe or whatever. And they asked him what Calipari said to him. And he said, he said to remember what was the, exact quote. I want to get the exact quote because I don't want to get it wrong. But this is from the kid. This is from the kid. Okay. So this is not from Cal. But you got to think, I mean, the kid's not going to make it up, right? He says, too, too, too, uh, Caleb Wilson. Coach Caliperry came to my school a week ago, and this is when I got the offer. He tells me it's like Cala Perry University. He's just moving homes. I mean, that's something that we all kind of
Starting point is 00:29:30 felt like he felt like, but never said it. But then to hear it come out like that, I think all of our, suspicions are real. That's how he felt when he was here. I mean, I don't think you have anything that's more of an exact articulation of how he feels drew than that. I mean, the reality is, and again, I'm not saying that doesn't work because it can work. But when you're telling players, it's Cala Perry University we just switched homes. That's how he recruited. That's how he recruited. He recruited selling him, the NBA, etc. And, but he kind of said, what is it, the kid? say he said the quiet part out loud, right? Like, I think that's kind of what he did there, right? Yeah, and really, I'm not surprised he's having to use that tactic. It just, it helps things
Starting point is 00:30:15 feel even better here as we're hearing the opposite of how it takes everyone right now with Pope coming into Kentucky, and then hearing Cal being a little more me, me, me over there. I'm actually wondering if I'm Arkansas, I'm more upset than Kentucky because it doesn't, not a whole lot of recruiting to Fayetteville makes you wonder how quick that stop will be. But the Arkansas people will talk themselves into it just like we did. I mean, the thing to remember is we talked ourselves into that for a long time. Because it works. When it's winning, you know, my belief is when it's winning, you can say whatever you want, right?
Starting point is 00:30:44 When it went, when you're winning, remember, I mean, he got up and said the best day in the history of Kentucky basketball was the NBA draft. And there were people that didn't like it, but most people just went, eh, whatever. They'll do the same thing. And I get that. But I also do think it is a complete embodiment, Ryan, of hard. how he actually feels. Right? I agree.
Starting point is 00:31:09 That's why I said, you know, we kind of suspect that he felt that way, but they hear it that maybe he actually says that to his recruits now in Arkansas, that he believes that. So you're right. As long as they're winning, Arkansas won't care what he says.
Starting point is 00:31:22 But then they start turned south, and then that kind of rubs on you pretty quickly. Yeah, I just think if you want to understand, and I know people do, because these are the questions we get up. If you want to understand the whole Calipari thing, How did it fall apart?
Starting point is 00:31:38 Quotes like that are an example. Because there's a lot of people around the university that didn't like. That's how he felt. He sort of, especially in the later years, and I think he had respect for the program. Don't get me wrong. I think he respected Joe B. Hall, and I think he respected the university, etc. But towards the end of his time, he began to treat folks like that was true. like this is my university of basketball.
Starting point is 00:32:09 And, you know, again, when you're winning, but when you do that and you lose to St. Petersburg in Oakland, different situation, right? And I think that was a very telling quote. Who's up first in? Charlie. Charlie, how are you, Charlie? I'm doing well.
Starting point is 00:32:25 I'm sitting here staring at a bottle of Kentucky Maker's Mark with a house picture on it, and he looks terrible. You mean in the bottle or just in life? Well, both. But I'm scared to drink it. But anyway, I've been tracking that Davis recruitment. I didn't think we were going to get him.
Starting point is 00:32:49 But who wouldn't want to come play for an offensive coordinator named Bush? I think he did drink it. I was going to say, I don't think he looked at the makers. I think he's been drinking. He's looking at an empty bottle with Calipari's face on it. You know, we have makers mark bottles for every coach. since Joe B. Hall or since Joby Hall.
Starting point is 00:33:13 I bet you know we don't have one with Mark Pope because he doesn't drink. He would have to approve that and I can see him maybe not approving that. You think he'll be the first one to not do it. I mean everybody else has done it. I guess maybe Eddie didn't do it.
Starting point is 00:33:27 But Joby had it. There was a Patino one. There was even a Billy Gillespie one. Tubby. There's a Cal one. Rich Brooks, Joker Phillips, Mark Stubbs. Wow.
Starting point is 00:33:38 I haven't thought about that. You think, I have a calipari one that's sealed, but there's no alcohol in it. They eventually just started selling empty ones. Maybe Pope will do an empty one. I've always thought they should sell empty ones because you're just wasting the bourbon because no one will open it. Except the guy that just called. Except that guy. He certainly did.
Starting point is 00:33:55 Who's up next? Jeremy. Jeremy. Jeremy. Hey, guys. So we were talking in the first segment about NIL and you were talking about how, you know, like Kentucky, say, has around about $4 million to spend. So you've got to explain to me how does this really work? So we've got $4 million salary cap, you say, is this how it really is now?
Starting point is 00:34:16 I mean, like, our other teams has got more or less. It's going to come down to how much we can pay. I just need to understand. Yes, you need to understand. I'm glad you said that. Yes. I think all the comments about, I think at this point, the way kids are going to make their decision, for the most part, there will be exceptions.
Starting point is 00:34:37 but for the most part is the amount of money will be number one and then if it's close the relationships and all the things that used to come into recruiting are number two but yes that's how it is and that's how it's let me just be clear that's how it's always going to be this will never change the only thing that might change is they might end up with some kind of collective bargaining where there's a universal salary cap that all schools can only spend the same amount of money, but even then they're going to find ways around it. Okay? So like, this is just how it is from now on.
Starting point is 00:35:15 Well, I mean, for me, that's hard to support. I mean, why is it hard to support? Let me, I'm not trying to pick on you, but why is it hard to support? No. Well, because it turns into like Premier League soccer where the team with the most money wins. It already was like that. It already was like that. The best teams won every year in the other system.
Starting point is 00:35:34 Like the same teams won every year in football and basketball. You go back and look at the last 30 years of basketball, the same seven programs dominated it. It's just we were one of them. We just got to pony up. That's all I can say. Thanks for taking my call. I mean, the reason I'm not gloom and doom about it is it was always like this. It's just you didn't know.
Starting point is 00:36:02 You know, now, now you know. But it's always been like this. The same programs are winning in football every year. actually think this system allows other schools to compete because all you need is one donor who's willing to spend some money and all of a sudden you can have a team that's got a shot. A friend of mine said that he goes, why don't it's like some rich guy that graduated from Harvard all of a sudden just decide he's going to give $10 million to the NIL program. Somebody will one day.
Starting point is 00:36:28 Harvard can get a bunch of lawyers. There's going to be some random school that just decides we want to compete. Yeah. It's going to happen. I think that's actually entertaining. Here's where it will hurt. I'm just looking at it from Kentucky. Mark Pope said this on the show Monday,
Starting point is 00:36:43 and he's right about this. In the short term, we're in good shape because we have some big donors who've stepped up. Long term, we're going to have to develop new ones of those and that whole club blue and the 15th, like that stuff's all going to really have to work. Because we do not have multiple mega donors like a lot of these other schools do.
Starting point is 00:37:05 We just don't. We don't have 20 like Texas A&M does, true. Yeah, that's why I hope eventually they get to a little bit better of structure with all this instead of what it is now where, I mean, good for Harvard if they do have a guy with $10 million, but I don't want to get to a point where Kentucky just doesn't have it and they're getting beat by their places. Harvard probably has a lot of dudes that have $10 million if they want to do. Hey, stop overpaying for sunglasses, Ryan. Yes.
Starting point is 00:37:27 Go to shadyrays.com, an independent American-owned company right here out of Kentucky, premium polarized shades for every activity. They have tangle-free aviators that won't get stuck in your hair. That's the problem you've always had, right? Shady rays, 50% off, two or more pairs in the store or online if you use a code KSR. It is shady raise.com, and if you lose or break them, they will replace them. We'll take a break. It's Wings Day.
Starting point is 00:37:53 Come get wings. We'll have Jerry Tipton the second hour. It's Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here at KS Bar and Grill. 859-28027. Text machine 7-7-7-4-5-254. I want to ask you if you believe this is true.
Starting point is 00:38:12 Okay. Major League Baseball says on Monday night, L.E. Dela Cruz threw a ball from shortstop to first base that was the fastest thrown ball in the history of baseball. They said he threw it 106.3 miles an hour from shortstop to first base. If you watched it, it was so fast the first baseman dropped it, nearly lost us the game, actually. should have caught it, but he dropped it.
Starting point is 00:38:38 Now, there are people who've slowed the tape down and done it, and they say, eh, don't know if I believe it. I think it was more like 103, 104, which is still insane. But do you believe that Ellie De La Cruz just threw it faster than anyone in the history of baseball? With everything else that guy is doing, fastest time around the bases on his inside the park, Homer, and farthest ball hit in the year last year, yes, I believe that man is not human, and he can throw a 107-mile-hour ball across the infield. What do you think?
Starting point is 00:39:09 They're calling it the fastest ever. Fastest ball thrown ever by an infielder. What I would think by a pitcher, too. I've never heard of a pitcher throwing it a hundred six. What Chapman did for the Reds a few years ago, threw 106. Well, okay. But I think what I saw was fastest ball thrown in the infield in baseball history. I guess I'll believe it with the technology they have these days.
Starting point is 00:39:30 I assume maybe one years ago when they couldn't drag it. Someone had thrown it close to that hard. but I mean, I'm not going to argue with science if they actually have it tracked at that. Shannon, do you believe it? Yeah, I mean, I don't think they're just making it up. There's radar guns all over the park. So, yeah, I think you could easily gauge that based on the radar gun. If you watch it in real time, it looks crazy fast.
Starting point is 00:39:51 Like, like, so, so Ellie kind of pumps. I don't know why he pumped. And then he goes and the ball just takes off. It goes so, I mean, the first baseman dropped it. Like it almost allowed the Padres to come back. But it was, have you seen the, no, I haven't seen the video yet. It's wild. You got to look at the throw.
Starting point is 00:40:08 Like, it looks like the fastest throw I've ever seen. I'm serious. Well, Jeff Brantley, and they were talking about it during the radio broadcast last night. Brantley said, you know, he's been around the game forever because he's never seen anything like that, that throw last night. Yeah. So think about you made a good point. He had the fastest from first to home of any player to ever run the bases, according to staff. He had the longest or I think second longest home run.
Starting point is 00:40:33 in baseball last year. And then you have that. It is like he's not human, right? He's not human. We didn't talk about it much, but that inside the park homer he hit earlier this year, he did it in like 14 seconds. That's unbelievable to get around the bases in 14 seconds. He was the first major league player ever to have eight home runs and 17 stolen bases in a
Starting point is 00:40:56 month. Nobody had ever done it. And he's like, what is he, 24 years old? 22 years old. That's amazing. 22. I just watched the clip. a rocket. Yeah, it's crazy. Who's up next, Shannon?
Starting point is 00:41:07 Casey. How are you, Casey? I'm great. How are you guys doing? Doing good. See? Does that look fast to you? Yes. All right, go ahead. Okay, so I have a random question. The last couple weeks have been kind of, not, I won't say stressful, but consuming looking at the roster and trying to find out who's in the portal and what's happening. So around the water cooler, we came up this little game and I'd like to get your own take on it. If you were going to draft your starting five,
Starting point is 00:41:36 but only using serial characters, who would you take? For example, the hill I'm willing to dial on it's Captain Crunch at point. I'm going to think about that. Yeah. So I'm going to save that. I'm writing that down. We'll either get to that later today or tomorrow. I do like if you were to create a basketball team out of serial characters,
Starting point is 00:41:56 what would you do? But I think that's going to be a longer discussion than we can have before the break. Yeah, I've got my number one pick, already. So I'm already going to be thinking about this. Who's your number one pick? Oh, Tony the Tiger. I was going to say, you can jump. Yeah, he can jump.
Starting point is 00:42:07 There's been commercials where he's actually been dunking already. So he's number one draft pick. Oh, you've seen commercial? Oh, yeah. Yes, he's hooper. He's a hooper. That's a lot better than mine, Tukin Sam. No, two can't Sam.
Starting point is 00:42:18 A lot of charges. The lucky charm guy. Not much help either. Yeah. Who's next? Let's go to Alex. Alex. Alex, go ahead, Alex.
Starting point is 00:42:26 Hey, Matt. I'm taking the leprechaun if you've ever seen luck of the Irish. I'm a longtime Kentucky basketball fan here. I actually went to the school at the University of Dayton, though. So I've followed them since I graduated and have watched Kobe Brea over the years. And I have a player comp that I wanted to share. I haven't heard this one yet. Doran Lamb.
Starting point is 00:42:48 No, I think that's a good one. I mean, Kobe Brea has shot, what did he shoot last year from 3? 49.7%. I mean, he, now, let me say, I need a commitment from him today. Oh, yeah. Right. Like if it ends up being after today and he leaves campus, that worries me a little bit. But if you get it today, some people think he's already done it and it's just going to be announced today.
Starting point is 00:43:10 I'm not sure if that's true or not. But I'm with you. If they get Kobe Brea, my view is, if you remember I said a few days ago, get one big Kobe Bray in a point guard or Jackson Robinson. You'll have two of those. I still think Jackson Robinson is huge if you want to be really good. I appreciate the call because I still feel like they are one star away and there just ain't a lot of those guys out there. Yeah, I really want Jackson Robinson and I'm with you. Bray, I woke up this morning hoping we'd already have a boom from coach figure.
Starting point is 00:43:46 It seemed that visit went well. We just need to lock it down before he moves on. That's exactly right. When we come back, Jerry Tipton's going to join us. Talk about his new book, which is excellent. And give us his thoughts on 41 years of covering Kentucky. That's right after this. This is Kentucky Sports Radio.
