Starting point is 00:02:25 Nurse Betty? Or is that ugly Betty? Anyway. I was just trying. I thought there was a TV show. show with nurse. Nick Nurse, all kinds of famous people. Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. Does that count? Great nurse. There we go. Exactly right. Give us your favorite nurses. 772, 774-5254 is the A-Vision Auto Glass Text Machine. Clark's Pump and Shop phone lines 859-280-2287. This edition is sponsored by the T.J. Smith
Starting point is 00:02:50 Lawvis. If you call T.J., he'll make them pay. Drew is out for the next couple days, so I have Ryan Lemon here with me. Shannon is in Louisville. We will be here. Today, tomorrow, and Thursday. We are at Vaughala for the opening of the PGA Championship gift shop on Wednesday. Nice. So, like, Wednesday is the day to go out there and get all the goodies. Steal them all. We'll not steal them.
Starting point is 00:03:15 You need to pay for them. Sure. And then Friday, I am gone to my mom's graduation, but the guys will be here as well. So we're getting ready to talk to my mom last night. She was telling me what I had to wear. I felt like I was a kid again. She was like, now you have to wear a suit for the graduation, for children. for chapel you have a coat but you don't have to wear a tie so I'm making sure I have everything I need
Starting point is 00:03:35 so she did finish that second paper she and she's done okay she's passed nice uh and Saturday morning she will walk at graduation and it should be very so proud of her that's really cool to do that yeah she told me like uh you know she has to be there early for graduation so I have to get Larry there she said she wanted me to take Larry because she didn't know if he could Uber by himself Shannon I'm not sure. That's okay. Well, he doesn't have a smart phone. So it would be, it's hard to do Uber without a smartphone.
Starting point is 00:04:06 He still has like a, you know, a flip. Doesn't really? I don't think you can, yeah, I don't think you can order Uber on a flip, can you? No. No, we've got to get them upgraded. I don't think he wants to upgrade. Remember, I've told this story before when my grandmother passed away, she got, she handed down her phone to him. And it was an upgrade.
Starting point is 00:04:28 She had him a landline phone? It was an upgrade. It was better than the phone he had. And so that's what he's had since then. Think about how time is changed. Larry used to drive you to school. Now I'm taking him to the graduation. Now you're taking him to kind of a school graduation.
Starting point is 00:04:44 Yeah, he took me to my graduation. And now I'm taking him to my mom's graduation. That kind of sweet. That is sweet. A lot of stuff to get to today. I think I'll start with the derby. All right, because, you know, it was here. biggest television audience for the derby since 1989.
Starting point is 00:05:02 Saw that. Do you remember who the horses were in 1989? See if you can use your hammer. I have no idea. Sunday Silence and Easy Goer. Yeah, that was a good race. They were like they went at each other all three races. I think Sunday Silence won the first two and then Easy Goer won the third to keep him from getting the triple crowd.
Starting point is 00:05:20 But this is the most people to watch the Derby since then. Are you impressed? Yeah, because, you know, in recent years, numbers had declined a little bit. For all sports. Yeah. But the derby's actually held pretty strong. I feel like the derby's got reinjected with energy in the last five or six years. I totally agree with that.
Starting point is 00:05:36 And I think the big controversy they've had the last couple of years probably added to that. And now you get this great finish. That's just going to continue to add to the drama of it. What about that finish? Unbelievable. Yes. Unbelievable. Could you tell in real time who won?
Starting point is 00:05:50 I did. I called it. I did. Well, I was sitting with Yoga Girl and her brother. I said that horse on the inside got it. Is that your expertise? I think so. I think all those years I've watched the derby and not know, I have any idea what's going on.
Starting point is 00:06:01 Shannon, were you able to call it in real time? No, no, I couldn't tell. But, I mean, that was the best finish probably of our lifetime in the Derby. Oh, yeah. First three-horse photo finish since 1952. Yeah. And it all depends on the head bob. They're all even, you know, that stride and the head bob.
Starting point is 00:06:18 You know, that's why they say. The slogan, he took it by a nose. That's from a horse horseback. We got to see it right there. Right there, saw it. How that ended up coming. I always think. When they talk about a photo finish, you know, back in the day, it used to be a photo.
Starting point is 00:06:32 Yes. Right? So there'd be a man there, Shannon, and he'd take the picture. That's a lot of pressure. It's a lot of pressure on the camera guy. What if he doesn't hit the button at the right moment? Right. And then you go back far enough, they had to, like, develop it.
Starting point is 00:06:45 Yeah. So did everyone just sit there and wait? How long did they have to wait? They shake it. No, this is before the polar road. I mean, they used to have to, like, develop it. Yes. How long would that tell?
Starting point is 00:06:55 There was literally was a room there at. Churchill Downs. They had to go back in the dark room and develop that photo to determine the window. And so then the whole crowd just sit there and go, and then wait? Yeah, you didn't come that far to not know the winner. You had to sit there and wait. So yeah, if the guy took the picture at the wrong time, click the button, just a hair too soon or a hair too late, then you're done. Yeah. So it was exciting. I gave out my trifecta. Here's what's interesting. I was all around it, but didn't hit it. So I had basically five horses that I boxed.
Starting point is 00:07:30 You know what that means? Yes. And then I had seven horses I liked, one of which was Mystic Dan, but that wasn't in my five. So I had Mystic Dan coming in second or third. That's a long way to say, if Sierra Leone had one, I had it. Yeah. And it would have been a big day, a nostril from that happened. But here's what I learned later.
Starting point is 00:07:53 You know, I put out my trifecta, and I think a lot of people, I use the word in a response, keyed, okay, keyed the race. Well, because of that, a lot of people bet what I put out incorrectly, but it made them win. Oh, no way. No, a lot of folks that saw my thing sent me messages that they won, and I couldn't really figure out looking at their ticket why they won. But then someone explained it to me, it's boring. I won't go into it. But we probably had at least 10 listeners who saw my try, bet it differently than I did accidentally.
Starting point is 00:08:34 And one. And Shannon, it led to them winning. Well, good for them. So good for them. Amen. Yeah. Yeah. And there was something, somebody did something called like a double box or a magic box or something,
Starting point is 00:08:45 which I didn't even know. I think it was called a magic box. And I didn't even know that was a thing you could do. And if you did that with my horses, Because it won as well. And I didn't even know that was something you could do. I never even heard of it. I'd never even heard of it.
Starting point is 00:08:59 And so point being, I think I won people money while losing myself a lot of money. That's your job. That's your job to help people win money. What we're talking about, I do want to give a shout to Kenny McPeak. Tate Creek guy, Lexington guy. His farm is right up Russell Cave Road. And I feel like with UK basketball, we got our program back. Lexington, Kentucky, we got the derby back.
Starting point is 00:09:22 You know, anyone the oaks. Any one the oaks. Now, Shannon, I do have a little regret. Because about five years ago, it was right before COVID, Kenny McPeek called me up and said, you know,
Starting point is 00:09:33 I want to get you involved in horse racing. Yeah. Would you like to, like, go in on a horse? By part of the horse? Yeah. Yeah. And I was like,
Starting point is 00:09:43 how much is it? And it was a little more than I wanted to put on a horse. Yeah. And I was like, all right. Now, I don't think it was,
Starting point is 00:09:52 this one, but I don't know. But what if it was? But what if it was? I mean, it was one of, it was some horse, but he wanted, because he wanted to, like, through us talking about my horse, like, help build up the racing and, and, et cetera. And I said at the time I was like, that's, I'd probably do it now. But at the time, I was like, that's a little more than I want to put into it. And so what I saw him, I thought, oh, I didn't, I mean, it probably wasn't that one.
Starting point is 00:10:20 But still, you never know. never know and like i mean so there you go so as i watched it the oaks and the derby i was like what if that was one of the horses it's cool man you canny olivertown i'm sure he's been in here he's just a local guy yeah just a real good local guy yes and he wins and then brian hernandez was the first jockey that billy interviewed yes it was billy as he did his jockey interview shannon the first one he got was brian hernandez and he ends up winning the derby how about that that's great tommy and good that he interviewed him because he only interviewed two jockeys the entire day.
Starting point is 00:10:55 I thought he's going to interview maybe half of them. So he only got two. Yeah. And one of them ends up winning the derby. How about that? I think it's all because of Billy. Probably Billy got him focused, got his mind right, for he went out there and made the race.
Starting point is 00:11:06 He says, what are you going to do in this race? Yeah. Go fast. All right. So a few, like, non-horse things. First of all. Martha Stewart. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:16 How could she say she was in Connecticut? That's a little bit of a, you know, You're in Kentucky for the Derby. It's called the Kentucky Derby. And she's literally here. Yes. I mean, she has to know where she is, right? Kentucky doesn't really sound like Connecticut.
Starting point is 00:11:33 You can't even. Kha? Yeah, not exactly. No. Do you think she, do you understand the mistake, Shab? No. I think she's been hanging out with Snoop Dog too much. Maybe you passed her some of that.
Starting point is 00:11:45 Maybe. I don't understand how could she, she could say Commonwealth of Connecticut. Yes. Here we, you know, that's, that's our moment. That's our moment. We get one moment. Yeah. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:11:58 She just says riders up. We don't need to hear anything else. Just riders up. Yeah, just riders up. We get one moment on the 150th anniversary, right? Record watching people watching. What? You know, there's a lot of people watching.
Starting point is 00:12:10 A lot of people watching it. And she gets up and says kinetic. Unbelievable. Unbelievable. All right. So a few other things. First of all, and I understand they have to do this. And I'm not saying it's.
Starting point is 00:12:21 compelling. But I am amazed how they are able every year to find a sad story about everyone. Uh-huh. Yeah. You know, everyone has a sad story. Everyone is sick. Someone is dying. Like, do you like that? Do you like the heartstring pull on all the horses? I got to be honest. I love it. You do. I love that lead up to the derby because you hear those stories. Cutler was great at it, man. He would find those stories. Kenny McPeek was a story. one year. His wife was battling cancer. He was the emotional story one year. I vote, yes. I love that part of it. So, you know, I mean, it's like seven hours leading up to it. And most of it is telling those stories. Yes. And you love it. I love it. Jen and do you like those stories? I'm good with it. I'm not going to bet on your horse because you have a sad story to go with it. But it definitely works. Sarah heard the story from the other room. She comes in and goes, oh, I want that horse to win now.
Starting point is 00:13:16 You want that horse to win. Yeah. So it works. Yeah, a couple of them I liked. I like the guy from the Bahamas. Yeah. Right. The guy from the Bahamas who hadn't trained here, hadn't had a horse in it in like 35 years, and I think he was fighting cancer, right? So that was a very nice story. I like that, you know, the Japanese horses are coming.
Starting point is 00:13:36 Yes. Right? And like, so when are they going to? And he almost won. Almost on forever young. One of them was three. And, you know, the thing about the Japanese horses, we don't know much about them, right?
Starting point is 00:13:45 Like we don't know because their time, things are different. Like, it's hard to know. And they get on a plane. and they were talking about the horse would be tired. Here's my question. Do you think horses, like, do you think that matters that they're on a plane? They said that it only been here for two weeks. Do you think horses on a plane that they get jet lagged?
Starting point is 00:14:04 I would say, yes, I'm sure they do. But after you're here for two weeks, you think you've kind of rested up a little bit and got your legs back underneath you, so to speak. I don't know. Do horses fall asleep at the same time of day? Like, do you think jet lag would have an impact on a horse? I think it would a little bit because they probably stand most of the trip. But for a horse, Shannon, they're only staying in one place.
Starting point is 00:14:31 We're acting like the horse is running from, you know, the airport to Churchill Downs and then running in the race. He's been there for two weeks. He should be fine. To the horse, you go from standing in a barn to standing on a plane. Yeah. Like, do they even know a difference? I mean, I guess there's probably some atmospheric thing. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:47 They get in the, but I don't know. I mean, it affects humans. We get jet lag. But not for two weeks. Yeah, two weeks later you should be okay. Part of humans is we get tired because we're not able to move around and things. And we set our event schedules. I mean, I feel like a horse, doesn't the horse just stand there?
Starting point is 00:15:05 Maybe he likes to move around too, and he's stuck there in that place. Well, clearly it didn't have too much of an impact because he came in third. By two noses. You know, how close was he to win it? He was third place. Should have a bigger nose. And then they had the celebrities. There are two types of celebrities at the Derby.
Starting point is 00:15:22 First of all, there's the Kid Rock Smokey Robinson, Joey Fatone, that come every year. You know what I mean? They're there every single year kind of reminding people, here I am. We're still alive. Smokey Robinson, it's the only way I know he's still alive every year, right, is when he shows up. And then every year they have some new ones. This year, it felt like the big one was Travis Kelsey. Yes.
Starting point is 00:15:43 But without Taylor Swift. Without Taylor Swift. Yeah, I think when he arrived, everybody thought she might be coming. Yeah, that would have been very excited. Oh, my, yes. Yeah. Reed Shepherd got a lot of coverage yesterday showing up with Jeff and Stacy. Alex Earl, do you know who that is?
Starting point is 00:15:57 I don't know who that is. She's like an Instagram, TikToker. She was there. That's what got everybody. Really? Apparently, the derby told me she drew as big a, ah, as anybody. Really? Like when she would walk through, people would go insane.
Starting point is 00:16:12 And you don't even know who that is, right? Mark Pope? I don't know if it was the same with him, but I think he got a lot of attention as well. He did, yeah. So it was exciting. Good day for Kentucky. Great day for Kentucky. Weather held off.
Starting point is 00:16:24 I did. Right? Everything ended up pretty strong. But Martha Stewart, somebody's got to tell her where she is when she comes to places. You got one job, Martha Stewart. Just say you're in Kentucky Riders up. That's all you got to say. Yeah, all right.
Starting point is 00:16:35 859-280. 2287. We're going to tell you a little basketball news. Take your calls. We're here at KS. Bar & Grill. Me, Ryan, and Shannon. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. All right, so people are giving some nurses.
Starting point is 00:16:52 Nurse Ratchet from one flew over a cuckoo's nest. I don't think I've ever seen that. I haven't either. That's not familiar. It's supposed to be like one of the best movies of all time. Yeah. Florence Nightingale. Heard of her.
Starting point is 00:17:04 Yeah, she was like, some people think she started the field of like nursing. Nursing. Let's see. In Meet the Parents, Shannon, Gay Lord Focker was a nurse. That's right. I forgot about that. My favorite nurse. A lot of people,
Starting point is 00:17:22 somebody, 772, 7754, people are, people are naming nurses. Nurse good body on he-haaw. That's one. That's a deep cut.
Starting point is 00:17:33 That's a deep cut. That's not even one of the biggest people on he-ha. But most of us know that one. Yeah, well, of a certain age. I don't know. Mario,
Starting point is 00:17:41 have you ever even heard a he-ha? Yeah, he has no idea what that is. That's why I would. That's true. of entertainment. You got to keep him around so he know, like, he-ha. What is he-ha?
Starting point is 00:17:53 You think he-ha? That would still work today, don't you think? I think there's a part of it that, yes, it would work just because it was a bunch of actors getting drunk and going on TV. Yeah, I mean, when I read that story that they all just set and did cocaine before they went on. Wait, I didn't read that. What? Yes, read about it. Oh, I got to read this.
Starting point is 00:18:10 You mean Grandpa Jones is doing a lot of Coke? I didn't say Grandpa Jones, but there was, go read the stories. Well, Ryan knows this. They would tape like two or three episodes in one day. Yes. And by the third day, they were all hammered. Like everyone. And some of them, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:18:29 I'm not going to say, I don't know which ones, but some of them apparently that was like during the time of cocaine. I think in the handbone had to be on it. Yeah. They had to be on something. Yeah. See, he wasn't filming. I know.
Starting point is 00:18:43 That's the video we need right there. That one. But yeah, by the third one. You can see the episodes if you go back to watch the ones where it was kicking in by the third taping of the day. Yeah, knowing that what we know now, if you see it, you're like, oh, yeah, they are sourced right there. All right. Some UK basketball news. Club Blue NIL, source told KSR this morning.
Starting point is 00:19:05 Club Blue NIL has taken in already $650,000 in annual pledges. That's amazing. Now, to give you a sense, the. La Familia did $37,000. $650,000. They believe they will get that over a million by the time of the June 15th event. And the goal, I think, is to get 5,000 annual subscribers. They've got a little ways to go on that, but they have, I think, far exceeded what I thought they would do initially.
Starting point is 00:19:44 Yeah. and club blue nil.com you need to get in on it for this event on the 15th. I've kind of heard a little bit of what they have planned. I think it's going to be a really, really cool thing. I wish I was going to be here for it, but I won't. But this is a huge step because I had people tell me two years ago. If you could get the fan base to a million dollars a year in NIL and then have the private donors, Kentucky would be fine in both sports, basketball and football, basketball,
Starting point is 00:20:15 because of a reinjection here, I think is headed in the right direction. Well, I saw your tweet this morning, and I thought to myself, my guess would have been half that. Maybe half, $200,000 or $300,000 at most. To get over $600,000 to me is amazing. Back when Law Familiar started, I talked with some of the people involved, and they were talking about goals. And I was like, make the goal small. because I think it's going to take a while
Starting point is 00:20:44 to get fans used to doing this. Yeah. And they decided to make the goal big and obviously we know it didn't really work out. I'm with you. I thought, you know, maybe they'll get $300,000 the first couple weeks. Which would be great, I would think.
Starting point is 00:20:59 Which I thought would be positive to get $6.50 and then, you know, they want to get a million before the event. They probably can. Well, I mean, if you want to go to the event, you do it. Yeah. So I think they will. They're going to, I'm told they're going to do four. events a year, that, to me, is worth doing it right there.
Starting point is 00:21:16 If you can go to four events a year. Just by joining? Just by joining? Because I think I don't know what the smallest amount you can give, but it's not a massive amount. So I think that's very good news for Nile. I was, you know, I still have long-term worries about the amount of big donors we do or don't have at Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:21:39 But if you could get the fan base contribute. which a lot of schools have been unable to do. This is a really good start to making that happen. Oh, it's an incredible start. I mean, they should be ecstatic getting that much in what, two and a half, three weeks. I mean, it's amazing they've been able to do that. I think both the football and the basketball one have,
Starting point is 00:22:00 I mean, the basketball ones obviously new, but the football ball one as well have come to a realization. You do have to give the fans something back. Yeah. Because I know I use this phrase a lot, but there was a professor of mine at Duke Law School that talked about the tragedy. It's called the tragedy of the commons.
Starting point is 00:22:17 And it's basically everybody likes common areas. Everybody likes having something that everyone can use. But most people won't pay for it because they just assume somebody else will do it. You know what I mean? So they love this collective, you know, they love the idea that UK basketball will raise money, but they think to themselves,
Starting point is 00:22:39 well, I won't do it. Because Ryan will do it, right? And then Ryan thinks, well, I won't do it because Matt will do it. And then neither of us end up doing it. It's good to see the fan base overcoming that to have this success. So with that, and on top of the, what, 5 million from private donors, I mean. I think they're set up. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:03 They're set up for year one and two very well. I think they will end up probably not spending all the money they have accessible for year one, but that's intentional for year two. Sure. And then after year two, Shannon, I think a lot of it depends on how you play. Right. Like, I mean, if you're playing well, people are more likely to continue. If you're not, it becomes a harder sell, Shane.
Starting point is 00:23:28 That's it. Yeah, you know, Pope's good at this too being a rah-rah guy. I don't feel like Cal was ever that way. No. But you want to get behind a guy like Mark Pope who is. such an energetic guy. And you're right. If they win, we'll see the results.
Starting point is 00:23:41 If they won't. You know, it's the same thing Vince Merrill told me when he came to Kentucky. He said in year one and year two, I'll be able to sell excitement and what we did at our other schools. But by year three, we got a win here in order for me to sell recruits. I think the same thing's true about it. I do, too. Initially, you can sell Mark Pope, nostalgia.
Starting point is 00:24:06 96 team. But when the game start, he's got to sell winning basketball at Kentucky. Yeah, don't be losing in the first round. Don't be losing to Oakland. You've got to win, and we'll stay there with you the whole way. Yeah. But considering where we were that Thursday night when it was announced,
Starting point is 00:24:27 you've got to be impressed where we are right now. It is. It really is impressed. All right. We'll take your calls and be right back. It's Kentucky Sports Radio. personal injury attorney. Call T.J.
Starting point is 00:24:39 He'll make him pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Gloom, despair, and agony on me. This is one of the skits you can tell. They get hammered while they're doing it. They probably shot like 20 in a row. And the guy would go, ooh, you know.
Starting point is 00:24:59 Listen, I ask you this during the first break, and it's driving me crazy. Who was the Grandpa Jones's buddy from McLaughin County that ended up getting murdered? He was a big, tall, skinny guy. Oh, a rail bean or skinny. Stream bean. Stream bean. String bean. String bean.
Starting point is 00:25:13 That's right. Yeah, 859-280, 2287. Folks are coming in with nurses. Each one is, like, older than the other. Are there no famous young nurses? Like, people are giving me characters off mash and stuff. Like, is there, like, is somebody young? There's got to be, like, because we're, because that Grace's anatomy was just hard.
Starting point is 00:25:33 Is it nurse, like, the job we need the most? Yeah. Like it's almost impossible to find nurses, isn't it? Like they have these traveling nurses that you get paid to go like live two years in a city or whatever and then because it's a place that needs them? I mean, you know what I'm talking about. Yes. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:52 That's a lot of the real estate world. Nurses that come in for like five years, boom, sell their house, move to the next big city or something. Yeah, 859-280-2287. Before we go, the phones. One more thing. Shannon and I'm out on the Reds again. They got swept over the weekend I saw. They're not, right now, they're not only bad.
Starting point is 00:26:10 They're impossible to watch because they can't get it. They can't hit. They had two games, like three. First game of the series, they got one hit. The second game, or no, the first game they got two hits. They were both Ellie. Second game, they didn't score. And third game, they didn't score until the ninth inning.
Starting point is 00:26:27 They only had one hit, and then the ninth inning, they kind of beat up on a guy a little bit. But they're terrible right now. I mean, they need to send Nick. Martini, Bubba Thompson, Santiago Espinal, send them to, like, Greece, okay, because they can't play. Then Christian and Carcione,
Starting point is 00:26:45 Strand, and Candelario, stink, and we need them to be good, but they stink. The only guy on the team that's, well, two, Ellie and Spencer Steer are the only guys that play well. They're brutal to watch, and the pigeon staff's
Starting point is 00:27:00 pretty good, but they're brutal. And I don't know what, like, I don't know if it's going to get any better because everybody's hurt. One guy went on roids and like he's out. Like, I don't know what to do. Yeah, I hate to break it to you. This is going to be a bad month for the Reds. They stink and they play the Dodgers seven times over the next two and a half weeks.
Starting point is 00:27:18 Yeah, they've got a tough May schedule. I mean, if they could get through this, if they could get through the next 15 games, 500, you would take it, right? But they're not going to. I mean, so it stinks. I was watching this weekend going, you all stink. So I'm out. I mean, I may come back. Cardinals are in the month.
Starting point is 00:27:37 I got a chance to win that one. Cardinals aren't any good either. I mean, we stink. Like, they're not even fun to watch. I mean, that was the thing about the last year, even when they weren't good, they were fun. Yeah, right. Ellie's amazing. But besides that, who's next?
Starting point is 00:27:50 Jeff. Jeff. Go ahead, Jeff. Hey, Matt, it's Jeff in Bartsdown. I got two things. First, about NIL. So I share your concern about the sustainability long-term for Kentucky basketball in IL, which I guess is natural.
Starting point is 00:28:04 Just saying that Kentucky only has maybe a handful of big million dollar donors. So what are your concerns there and how concerned are you? Well, I'm pretty concerned. I mean, you know, but like people will develop. I mean, there are plenty of rich people in Kentucky. I mean, we got a lot of people with a lot of money. You know, Mark Pope, one of the things Mark Stoops did a really good job is he found about 10 guys who weren't giving money to UK football and they became
Starting point is 00:28:32 donors and they sustain the UK football program. So probably 10 people. There's one or two that are the primary ones, but there's another six to eight ones that sort of are secondary. And that's who sustains the UK football program. And Mark Stoops kind of cultivated all of them. So that's one of the things people don't realize when they talk about when people would get mad at Stoops and Mera or, you know, talk about a change.
Starting point is 00:28:54 You'd lose all those donors. So not only would you be starting back a coach, you'd be starting back NIL, etc. UK basketball, John Calapary did the opposite. John Calgary basically just didn't feel the need to have a relationship with any donors outside of maybe one or two. His view was, and this is a pre-NIL view, I got good relationship with shoe companies and stuff, you know what I mean? Like, I don't need all that. So then when it came time for NIL, Cal was able to leverage some of his shoe company national stuff, to help us with the NIL.
Starting point is 00:29:32 But the moment that's gone, Cal's relationship with, say, Nike is gone. Yeah. Right? So now we're back to square one. And what impresses me about Pope is, there are people around the program that thought the day Cal leaves, R&L is at zero.
Starting point is 00:29:50 Pope has been able to, in three weeks, get it where it needs to be, or very close. And that is a huge, huge, I think thank you go to the couple big donors who stepped up to Mitch for getting them to step up and then to Pope for finding a sustainable path because in the Cal era we did it based on the personality of Cal but then when that was gone we had nothing behind. So can't you see kind of Pope doing what Stoops did? You know, get a group of guys. No doubt. He will.
Starting point is 00:30:24 Yeah, I think so too. Now there's a little difference like Pope, you know, Stoops is like come hang out at my house. they're buddies, right? I don't know if Pope's going to be like that. I don't know him well enough to know. But Pope does, I think, give off good impressions, and I think there's just a lot of people excited to be back in the Kentucky basketball mix. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:30:45 It feels a lot more like they're supporting our program instead of Cal's program, which I think it didn't bother me. But even when we succeeded, you know this, Ryan, because these are people you know. It annoyed them. Oh, yeah. You know, it annoyed them. And that's why the minute, 24 hours after Hope was hired, the minute we all kind of accepted that,
Starting point is 00:31:08 we got our program back again. You know, we got it back. And the people who are heavy investors felt that even more, I think, than the average fan. Yeah. Yeah. Who's next? Let's go to Corey. Corey, go ahead, Corey.
Starting point is 00:31:22 Hey, guys. So I worked for a health care cost containment company out of Boston, live in Louisville. I pushed to be on our podcast last week because I wanted to talk about the EMTALA case in front of the Supreme Court and I wanted to give derby picks. We're not doing any of just let's pick one. Pick the one that's most important.
Starting point is 00:31:40 No, no, we're good. At the end of that podcast, I explained what a trifecta box was. I gave the winners. It hit, obviously on Saturday. Right before the race, I switched from Mystic Dan to Forever Young, or excuse me, chasing freedom,
Starting point is 00:31:56 which came in fourth. immediately got a text from my CEO congratulating me on the trifecta he won 25 grand i won nothing because i switched the switch the pick i understand and he has roasted me ever since and he's scheduled an emergency podcast next week so he can well i i understand what that's like and i'm not i appreciate the call i i'm glad that i was able to get everybody that that screwed up and bet it wrong the correct answer but i it was very frustrating Because, you know, I always do five primary and then seven, like five and then two more kind of secondary. Mystic Dan was one of my secondary ones.
Starting point is 00:32:36 And all the people that screwed up and bet it wrong get it right. And I bet it's a great story. And the thing was, I had two, three, four. A lot of people did because they were part of the favorites. But, you know, as I was sitting there watching that photo, it became clear it looked like Mystic Dan had won. But I was hoping maybe there was a secret angle. Oh, a secret angle. Well, the NASCAR race.
Starting point is 00:32:59 Did you watch the NASCAR race yesterday? No. So the NASCAR race was the closest finish in the history of NASCAR. Was it? 0.001 seconds. So that's close. The thing is, though, Shannon, all right, you look at the photo for that. If you look at the photo, from one side, it looks like one car one.
Starting point is 00:33:21 And from the other side, it looks like the other car one. And it also looks like if you look at the photo that the finish line is crooked. Oh. No, it does. Now, there's a reason. Because of the curvature of the track, the finish line follows that curvature. But if you're just looking at it straight on, it looks like the person that drew the line was drunk. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:47 And didn't draw it straight. And so when I saw that one, I was like, man, if I'd bet on the other car, I'd be really mad. Now, when I got it explained to me, it made sense. But if you look at that one, that shows how your eyes can screw it up, because depending on which side of the track, you look at the NASCAR, when you might have thought a different person won't. Yeah, I knew you were going to say that. The curvature of the track, it's banked.
Starting point is 00:34:13 You know, so they have to draw that finish line, which would be proper, but for somebody looking at it, like, that's... Do you trust, Shannon, that they drew it correctly? No. I knew you would. flag on that. I'm a little surprised they don't have like an aerial camera view where they can look down. You would think in that situation would be easier.
Starting point is 00:34:30 But I think that angle would probably, yeah, that might be, I don't know. Again, I don't know the science of it. Yeah. But they were saying, because like when they watched, if you watch the NASCAR race, the announcer thinks one guy won. And then like a minute later, they say the other guy won. and the people who like, I think it's Busher, still think he won, but the people who know physics are like, no, he didn't.
Starting point is 00:34:59 But, you know, the NASCAR crowd, Shannon, not the biggest physics crowd. Don't be bringing physics into a NASCAR crowd. I agree. So what a weekend for racing? The Derby close finish on Saturday. Derby and NASCAR have great, like, it is a big week for racing. Yeah. Also, the picture.
Starting point is 00:35:16 Did you see the picture? of the horse race from the finish line. I think it was a guy at the Courier Journal has it right as the three horse, and he's below him. Have you seen that picture? That's one of the best pictures I've ever seen. One of the best sports pictures I've ever seen. It's the guy, it's a guy from the Courier Journal took it Michael.
Starting point is 00:35:34 I can't remember his name. I'm sorry because he deserves credit. He's a great picture. He is under, like, he's at the finish line, but on the ground. Yeah. So he's shooting up, and the three horses are there. And it's, wow. They look majestic.
Starting point is 00:35:48 and beautiful, and you can see how close they are. And it's like, that's one of the best sports pictures I've ever seen in my life. Well, that's what makes the derby special. It is beautiful. It is beautiful. When they come around that first turn and all 20 horses are bunched up, you can feel it. You can feel the thundering of the hooves.
Starting point is 00:36:03 I think it's like Clevenger, maybe the guy's name. But UK Federal Credit Union is official credit union in the University of Kentucky. Award-winning best place to work winner from student to graduate employee and beyond. UK Federal Credit Union is here for you. two locations on UK's campus. Go to UK or close to it. Starting point is 00:36:27 It's UK Federal Credit Union. We'll take a break. Be right back. KSR. Welcome back, Techie Sports Radio. So you know, Ryan, that there's a beef between Kendrick, Lamar, and Drake. They've been beefing, rap battling. You may be shocked when I tell you.
Starting point is 00:36:50 I have no idea. This is the first time hearing of it. You didn't even know they didn't like each other? No, I did not know this. So I don't know what, I asked Mario, I don't know what it's about at its core. Apparently they did a song together, and I guess things didn't go well. Maybe one of them didn't like the, you know, the verses they dropped. It was but Kendrick and Drake and Jay Cole, you know, but now Kendrick and Drake,
Starting point is 00:37:16 they don't like each other. And so they make songs about each other. And let me just say, Shannon, they're really mean. Like the things they say about each other, I don't know, man. I don't think they're kidding. Probably not, but it's probably good for both of their careers. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know if it's good for Drake's career.
Starting point is 00:37:34 I mean, there's some bad things. And the internet, you know, I tried to listen to a couple and, like, you know, it's not my thing. So whatever. But it seems like Kendrick won. Oh, you think so? You're declaring hit the winner? I don't know. But it seems like the internet is declaring Kendrick the winner.
Starting point is 00:37:52 Okay. And it's, but here's what's crazy. They put them out like every 10 hours. One of them puts it out. Then another one responds. First of all, I didn't realize you could put songs out this quick. That's pretty quick. They put it out quick.
Starting point is 00:38:07 Drake put out one, and I think Kendrick Lamar put it out two hours later. How's he do that? Well, the story is he might have a mole inside Drake's camp, slipping him the song early, right? Yeah, that way his response. And then in the next one, Drake responds, you may have a mole, but I know who it is. Yeah. It's like, I mean, first of all, how quickly they write, like, do, do, do to do, and they get it out there really quick.
Starting point is 00:38:35 So there's a big beef. And I think, I think Drake is universally considered to be on the short end of the state. You think so? It's not me. I'm not just telling you that's what I see the internet. seems to think that. It's probably good for their business, I would say. People want to buy their next, download the next song.
Starting point is 00:38:53 You just hit a button in it. I don't know how they make money from it. Yeah. Like a lot of them are just online. You just hit it and there it is. Shannon, you're a music guy. What do you think of the beef? Well, I'm just trying to catch up on some of the lyrics that were.
Starting point is 00:39:05 No, there's some bad lyrics. I think I know why you said that Drake lost in this one. Oh, I mean, Kendrick Lamar feels like he gets much more personal. Really? Yes. He gets much more But I think you can crank out a song quickly, you know, like it's just a beat
Starting point is 00:39:22 And you just throw something down on it Do any rock people do this, Shannon? Like do any, like, does, Did Metallica ever write something about Def Leopard Or like this, it's just a rap? I'm sure there are, but I can't think of any examples. But usually it's in rock bands, it's band members going at each other, like internally, you know?
Starting point is 00:39:41 So maybe they'll write a song about one of the other guys in the band. I mean, sometimes Countryart. artist will be like, oh, I don't like the Dixie Chicks or something. But even then, I've always thought that was kind of lame. I think Paul McCartney wrote a song about John Lennon, like taking a shot at him. I think so. He wrote a song about John Lennon? I think so.
Starting point is 00:40:01 Yeah, when the Beatles broke up. So anyway, I just want to keep you abreast of the news. Great, yes. Between the three of us, me, you, and Mario. We have three different levels of knowledge. Yes. Mario knows all the intimate details of the words and who's going at each other. I know that there is a fight.
Starting point is 00:40:21 You don't even know that. Whitey man, white man sitting here to know anything that's going on in this. Yes. Well, one point, Kendrick. Okay, we're keeping score. That's what I hear. Who's up next? Mike.
Starting point is 00:40:33 Mike, go ahead, Mike. How you doing, Matt? What's going on? Listen, I tell you what, well, I tell you what, this is the second time I've called within a few days. The first time was when I told you that my wife had a big crush on Shannon. Remember the other day? Yeah, I got you. Well, what's this time?
Starting point is 00:40:53 Well, my wife is a registered nurse. Well, she's retired now, but she spent 43 years as a nurse, 18 of which was ICU in the last 25 as a homeowner. So what are you doing for her for nurse's appreciation debt? Did you buy or something? Well, no, I haven't yet. She's not in town. As a matter of fact, being a nurse. her sister lives in Nashville and she's had some health issues.
Starting point is 00:41:20 So Carol's down, her name is Carol. She's down in Nashville taking care of her sister. Well, okay, I want you to promise me before she comes home, you will buy her a gift for Nurses Appreciation Day, okay? I will do that. And she, you know what? She's listening. She's either listening to this show or she will be listening to the podcast.
Starting point is 00:41:39 Well, I will, to your, I appreciate the call. To your nurse wife. Tell us. Hello. Shannon. Shannon says, says, hello ladies. How you doing?
Starting point is 00:41:51 How you doing, wife? No, thanks for listening, and we appreciate that. You need to buy something for a nurse's appreciation day. I'm not sure I'm that close with any nurse. I'm trying to think. I wouldn't buy other people's wives' gifts for nurses' appreciation day. I wouldn't do that. But if you have one in your own existence,
Starting point is 00:42:13 than you would. Who's up next? Roscoe. Roscoe. How are you, Roscoe? I'm very well, Matt. Enjoy listening to your show. I've really started to listen to it and catch some of your stuff online since the departure of Mr. Cali Perry. So I've been watching it kind of faithfully. We decided to have a nice trip down to election and catch the Arkansas series this past weekend. And before that, you guys on your show one day last week were talking about Mystique Dan and the connections to Lexington. So we got checked into the hotel Saturday, and it was real close to the Red Mile.
Starting point is 00:42:56 I went over and put a little coin on Mystique Dan. It's Mystic Dan. Mystic Dan. Mystique, Dan. I went on to the game Saturday, and then we went over to Carson's to have something neat. and they had TVs everywhere. And lo and behold, the horse won. Yeah, I did.
Starting point is 00:43:16 And it covered more than my dinner. I wanted to thank you guys for the tip. Well, congrats. I appreciate, I'm winning. Appreciate the call. Again, I apparently gave someone a tip, and yet I didn't win myself. Well, your full service radio host. There's a lot of people thanking me for their derby picks,
Starting point is 00:43:36 and yet somehow I lost quite a chunk of change on it. You know, I sit there and watch this. The four horses came down the back stretch, and I said, if any of these four win, except Mystic Dan, it's a party. By a nose. And then the one was the one I didn't get it. We'll talk a little bit about the UK baseball series
Starting point is 00:43:55 and some more on basketball. We'll take a break. Be right back hour number two. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Oden
