Trent, first of all, congratulations on your decision yesterday
Starting point is 00:03:08 and talk to me about how you ended up deciding to become a wildcat. Thank you. Thank you. I appreciate it. I mean, it's Kentucky basketball. And what can you say? I mean, growing up from Kentucky and being a Kentucky kid, that's just something that you always dream of. And whenever whenever the opportunity came about,
Starting point is 00:03:30 I mean, there's just no way in the world that that I could even think about passing it up. So just the honor to, for my name to even be mentioned with Kentucky basketball and the prod that comes with Kentucky basketball and being a Kentucky kid. It was just a no-brainer decision for me. So talk, walk me through when Mark Pope gets hired, do you at that point think to yourself,
Starting point is 00:03:56 oh man, I'm watching this system pull. this is the kind of thing I could play in. How did your mindset go? Did it start when Pope got hired? Well, I mean, there was a lot of factors that went into it. I mean, South Carolina handled it very well whenever my NL I release and stuff like that. But, yeah, I mean, there was just a lot of things that went into it. And it's just crazy how it all works out.
Starting point is 00:04:25 And I just kind of took a leap and took a chance. just God ended me up at Kentucky, and I just couldn't be more grateful for it. You know, when you guys are playing in the state tournament, during the semifinals and finals, I walked over to the Harlan County section, and everybody I talked to was like, man, we got to get this kid to Kentucky. What can you do to get this kid to Kentucky? I said, well, I can't do anything to get him to Kentucky. But I know where you're from.
Starting point is 00:04:54 Everybody there has to be excited, and you've got to be excited about that, am I right? Yes, sir. I mean, for sure. I mean, just waking up this morning and putting on a UK sweatshirt, it just, it was really just a special moment knowing that that's where I'm going to be and walking into school and just seeing everybody in Kentucky blue with their gear on. It really is just special. It's kind of hard to even put into words, but there's something special about Eastern Kentucky and about Harlan County that will definitely. definitely be carried to Kentucky basketball already more than what it is. See, I love that. That's great. And have you ever had poke salad? You know, we've been there a number of times for the festival. Have you ever actually eating it? I've never actually eaten it. I've been there a time or two, though. Smart man. Stay away from it. It's good. What are you talking about? All right. So talk to me about, you know,
Starting point is 00:05:54 you played in the finals against Travis Perry and Lyme County. I know you know the guy. Now you're going to play on the same team. Tell me about your relationship with him. Yeah, I mean, Travis, he's an exceptional guy, and he comes from an exceptional family. So we played together some this summer, and then we got to compete against each other in the state finals.
Starting point is 00:06:15 But the good thing is, I mean, we was talking, and it's just now that we're on the same side, we're working toward that same goal. We're trying to hang number nine together. And to finally be on the same team, it really is special. That's one of the first people that I texted after, and I was just super, I'm just super excited to get to work with him.
Starting point is 00:06:36 You know, I'm a fellow 13th regioner down there, and the last player we had from the 13th region was Richie. And then there was a huge gap, and you had Reed. And those are two kind of legendary guys. I mean, Richie Farmer and Reed Shepherd, those are two of the best high school players, both Kentucky players. How does it feel to be kind of next in that line?
Starting point is 00:06:58 yeah it really it's super humbling and it's awesome to to even be mentioned in the realm of those guys because they're they're exceptional exceptional talents and just what reed what reed did last year it was just it was just super cool super cool to see and um just just what he's done for for the state of kentucky and um just being from kentucky how how he went in year one as a freshman and contributed was just amazing to see and i just couldn't and be more happy for him. I'm going to ask you to do something. You mentioned Harlan is special, and I agree with you about that.
Starting point is 00:07:35 I think there's probably not many more places that are more eastern Kentucky than Harlan. There's a lot of this state that's listening that doesn't know anything about Harlan. So if you were to describe Harlan to the people all around the state, what would you say? Man, I could talk about Harlan for a while, but if I had to sum it all up, I would say it's full of the most passionate, passionate people. just the love that they show me and, and even our high school team this year and the love that they show Kentucky sports and Kentucky basketball, they're just as passionate as they come. Have you ever seen a person that has better hair than your teammate, the guard there with
Starting point is 00:08:16 that long hair? That's the best hair I've ever seen in my life. I'm going to be honest with you. Yeah, he needs some kind of like head and shoulders commercial or something, like Troy Paul and Moller or something. You think he's going to keep that forever? Because when he plays, it just would flow. Did it ever get in your face? Did you ever run into it accidentally guarding him in practice? Maybe a time or two. He's had to have gotten immune to it or something.
Starting point is 00:08:43 He just kind of, I guess he just sees right through it. It's something else, though. I'll finish with this. When you talk to Mark Pope, a lot of fans are very excited for the passion of him as a coach. And I can hear you saying a lot of the same things. He says, what do you think Kentucky fans and you, where we're going to get now with the new coach, Mark Pope? Yeah, I mean, Coach Pope, he's an exceptional guy,
Starting point is 00:09:09 and he's an exceptional coach on top of that. And I just know that Kentucky fans already love him, but whenever the season comes around, they're going to love him even more. It's just something about he knows the Kentucky way. And me being from Kentucky, I've grown up around Kentucky, We've had football season tickets for 62 years now in our family. So, I mean, just growing up around. You've had football season tickets for 62 years, your family?
Starting point is 00:09:39 Yes, sir. We've been going a while now. Wow, that's amazing. Well, I have to tell you, the state tournament, the Campbell County game and the Evangelical Christian game, where, you know, as good of performances as people who've been going have seen with you, it's very exciting for all of us that you're coming. Good luck.
Starting point is 00:09:56 and we will see you here in Lexington soon. Yes, sir. I appreciate it. I can't wait to get down to campus. There you go. Trent Noah, the university, from Harlan County going to the University of Kentucky. Appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:10:07 I think every single person listening has that little spot in your heart. Got to love it. Knowing that this morning that kid got up and put on a UK shirt, walked into his school with everybody else wearing UK blue. They were happy that he was going to South Carolina,
Starting point is 00:10:23 but now he's going to their school. The fact that his family has tickets for 62 years And literally the folks here couldn't hear what he said But the fact that he gets up that he says, you know, You dream of doing this and it gets to happen Put everything else aside. I mean, you've got to have dudes from all over the country But you're not going to convince me that a team can't be better
Starting point is 00:10:47 By having that on it, that heart, right? Like somebody that believes that, Drew, like that matters And we're going to have two of them next year from east and west, from my region and your region, like there's value in that. There just has to be. Yeah. Freddie talked to, he wrote this on the board last night.
Starting point is 00:11:05 He's excited to add some Harlan, and you pointed out, we got two freshmen with county at the end of their school. It's nice to add that again. Been a while I probably had two. But hearing that about the football tickets, I already loved him a lot. I wanted that kid since the day Pope took the job. Now knowing that he's got family
Starting point is 00:11:20 and he's been in those bleachers watching some football decades, decades long having those seats. That makes me love him even more knowing he's one of us. I'm happy for him, but I'm also really happy for the people in the Harlan County. Yep. You know, that's a, if you watch wrestlers, you see we do, there's like 10 minutes there and me and some other people talk about Arlen County. That's a place that deserves to have a kid like this represent them on a large scale.
Starting point is 00:11:46 Probably no place in America has been more hurt by the decline of the coal industry than Harlan County. I'm not sure there is one. And the fact that that place now gets to have a kid from their school who takes them to the championship game of the tournament, who gets to play at the University of Kentucky, I just think it's awesome, Ryan. I think it's one of the, it makes me really, really happy all the way around.
Starting point is 00:12:12 Sometimes stories write themselves, and this is another Walt Disney story just happening right in front of us, the kid that's going to get to grew up in the mountains of Harlan County, Kentucky, going to get to play for Kentucky. And if he ends up really good, you know they're going to be playing. You'll never leave Harlan alive at Ruperina after something. You know that's coming at some point, Drew, if things go well. I was just about to say that Patty Lovelace is going to hit so hard in Ruperina.
Starting point is 00:12:36 They've even played it at football games without a connection. I think one of the pitchers has it as a walkout song for baseball, but now we have a true Harlan County players. Actual Harlan County and coming in there. Got to work that end of the Rupperina experience. That's going to be awesome. All right, Shannon, who's up next? Frankie. Frankie 30 seconds go
Starting point is 00:12:52 Hey I just had a couple questions Was Trent the kid that you said Would commit to Kentucky if he ended up in the transfer portal And what's going on with the Mamba Jersey Sponsorship is that something that was just Calipari Or is that still going to happen to Kentucky You know I answer that question
Starting point is 00:13:12 I do not know Honestly I'm not sure As far as the no no it was not the player I was talking about it was an ACC player and I don't think he ended up getting in the portal so and I think once that became unlikely they really put some attention on that Chas Lanier kid from North Florida who's down to Kentucky and Tennessee it's a battle between the cats and the balls for a really talented guy averaged 19 points a game last year how you think
Starting point is 00:13:40 that's going to play out Drew you know it's I won him I want Jackson Robbins too got end up with either one but I certainly know that it's down to valls that added some points in wanting chas leneer to keep him from going there and having to play against him because you don't want to play against him right i mean he's got some flashy highlights now he needs to prove it at a higher level of basketball but uh the dude can certainly play yeah so uh i hope it works out for uh for us with him because i think he can what we were just talking about who would be the leading score he's a dude that can answer that question if he ends up coming here you know school is almost out right it is but the deals are just getting started at don franklin tell me about it
Starting point is 00:14:18 Head on into your local Don Franklin dealership at Don Franklin Auto.com. They have a local owner. How about that? How about that? They treat you like family. Like family. That's exactly right.
Starting point is 00:14:26 The Don Franklin staff will help you find the car that meet your needs from the dealerships across the state. My final show before I go to Europe will be able to Don Franklin. Nice. Which one is it? Somerset. Mario you're supposed to have it. Come on, Mario.
Starting point is 00:14:40 Mario, come on. He's still a Dairy Queen waiting for his food. Either way, go to Don Franklin Auto, Somerset. Don Franklin Auto.com. It's Don Franklin, driven by family. We'll take a break and come back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back, Techie Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:14:59 Couple open lines, 859-280-2287. Don't let the buzzer scare you. Some people get scared by the buzzer, and you want to call them buzzer day. Getting buzzed by Shannon is part of life. It should be an honor for you. It should be an honor to get buzzed by Shannon. You know, it's like,
Starting point is 00:15:18 And that means Shannon. Well, it means 30 seconds at best. Ultimately, yes. Ultimately, that's what it means. How are you, ladies? Where are you from? Lexington. And it's your birthday.
Starting point is 00:15:31 Happy birthday. Happy birthday. All right. I like that. Trent Noah's grandfather played football in Kentucky. His name was Perky Bryant. Perky is a great name. You don't see enough kids nowadays.
Starting point is 00:15:46 He's adults named Perky. you drew no and i looked it up he played on the nineteen sixty two team known as the thin thirty yes they're with the thin thirty yeah of course not thirty eight then thirty they went from eighty eight to thirty players in uh one season charlie bradshaw scared all of them away right like they uh he was he was two he was two yelling that's not a word sentence he was too yelling but uh but yes he he was too yelling the internet says his brutal methods thin the roster yes there's a book about it right there's a book about it
Starting point is 00:16:17 Yes, it is. Yep. He was one of the 30. 859-28027. Let's talk about some coaches that we should be glad are not coaching here for their NIL attitudes. All right. We'll start with a Boise State coach.
Starting point is 00:16:31 Boise State coach comes out and says, we're not giving, we're banning all NIL for freshman players. They can't get it. He was like, they have to play here for a year, and then if they do well, they'll get in I. Well, first of all, my message for that youngster for that man is get ready to get sued because you can't do that. You can't ban them from getting in an aisle. You could decide not to give them money for a collective, but you are not allowed to ban people for giving them from making money.
Starting point is 00:17:07 The court has said that. So you're going to lose that. But secondly, how are you going to recruit with that being your attitude? That's it. you got kids wanting to come through your school and you're not going to offer them a thing. And maybe it's South Dakota State or somebody right next door like, okay, look, we'll give you a couple thousand dollars. Who are you picking? I'm picking the school.
Starting point is 00:17:25 It's going to give me some money. It also may be, though, they don't have any money. And it's just easy to go, we're not giving any money as a matter of principle. But I don't think that strategy is going to work for Boise State. If you're an athletic director and your new coach is saying this, are you allowed to just step in? You know what, this isn't going to work for it? like you're fired for having that idea. It's a terrible idea.
Starting point is 00:17:46 You're not going to be able to recruit like that. You can't. And it's also illegal. You're going to get sued. You can't. I mean, if they look at an athlete and say you cannot get an endorsement deal, they will get sued, period, and they will lose. So I don't know.
Starting point is 00:18:01 I just found it. And by the way, that statement will be used in court as the intentional violation of their rights. If I were just the school and ADE, I'd be like, hey, man, Just keep it down. That's not helping us at all. And then Brian Kelly at LSU says, we're not going to buy any players. If you want to come here and play,
Starting point is 00:18:21 you just have to come play. First of all, that's LSU. Number one, I don't believe that. Not a word of it. I don't believe they're not buying players. Of course they're buying players.
Starting point is 00:18:31 If they're not buying players, they're not getting players. So that's number one. Number two, what are you talking about? Like, if he really took the view, you're not buying,
Starting point is 00:18:40 buying players, LSU will lose. Like they'll lose, period. So, like, he can't. These people are fighting against, it's like people who didn't want cell phones going, I'll never use a cell phone. Yes, you will.
Starting point is 00:18:55 If you want to, like, work in the business world at some point you will, Ryan. We've seen these different programs and coaches kind of slowly warm up to the idea. But, man, we're three or four years into this now, Brian Kelly. I mean, it's, and you're at LSU. You've got to get top quality players at LSU. Yeah, at LSU, you don't have the option to not go get players. That would be the equivalent of like, you know, Yukon saying that, or North Carolina. For basketball?
Starting point is 00:19:24 For basketball. Like, you can't. You're an LSU. You're LSU. Dude, do you want to compete or not? Yeah, they need a caliber of player that will definitely demand a little bit of money. Also, hadn't LSU probably been paying players long before NIL? LSU had NIL before even anyone knew that was a thing.
Starting point is 00:19:43 Before we were alive, they were doing NIL. I think it might be in their school motto, we pay players. I don't think you can just change that. I hate when coaches like Brian Kelly, who left Notre Dame to go to LSU for more money, get mad at players for wanting to go get more money. What is more hypocritical than that? Brian Kelly left his team before a bowl game. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:08 Right. Right. They still had a bowl game to play, and he left. I don't know how Brian Kelly has the audacity to say anything, right? No. Like Drew said, if you're the athletic director or your assistant coach, you're recruiting some of these kids, I'm telling my coach, shut up. Don't be saying that, man.
Starting point is 00:20:25 We want to try to get these a great quality type player. We're going to have to pay a little bit for them. Yeah, 859-28027. Who's up next? Bob and Jamestown. Bob and Jamestown, 30 seconds. Go. Matt and I aren't.
Starting point is 00:20:38 and a half, the reds are going to go back on a field after dropping seven games. What is it going to take for them to get back and put the wheels back on the big red machine? They stink. I mean, I know. I mean, the answer is they just stink, and I appreciate the call. They stink. And I was sitting here watching them last night during trivia, like, while people are answering questions, they just, they stink.
Starting point is 00:21:02 And I, they scored three runs last night. It's the most runs they've scored during the seven game losing street. week. Will Benson. And I like Will Benson. But Will Benson leads the majors in strikeouts. It's first and third one out. We're down one. All he's got to do is make contact. Just put it in play, buddy. Just make contact. He's so fast, he's not going to get doubled up. Just put it, make contact. And, of course, he strikes out again. He's hitting like 104. They finally got rid of martini and Bubba. Yeah. But they stink.
Starting point is 00:21:40 I was looking for the Bubba unders on Draft Kings. I didn't see any. I didn't know he was already gone. But I had followed your advice on that for a few games. We talked about it. It's not going to get any easier for the Reds. They've got the Dodgers series. They've got another series, I think, with San Francisco.
Starting point is 00:21:52 I've paid for three or four days of my Europe trips betting against the Red. No, I'm being serious. Every night. I'm going to bet against them today. I'm going to keep betting against them until they win. They're favorite today. Are they? Hunter Green?
Starting point is 00:22:09 It's not Hunter Green's ball. We can't hit. And you can't score a run. You've got five guys in the lineup that are under 200, hitting under 200. You're not going to win a lot of games. We hit Espinall 5th last night. What's his batting average? 170.
Starting point is 00:22:24 And he was hitting 5th. Oh. Who's next? You'll be back soon. Savannah. Savannah. Go ahead. 30 seconds.
Starting point is 00:22:32 Good morning. First time, long time. Who are? What's up? Oh, you know, same old. So first, I wanted to say congratulations to your mom on her graduation. That is awesome. Second, I heard a rumor that Ryan Lemon and his team won in trivia last night,
Starting point is 00:22:47 or at least made it to the finals. Is that right? Yes, whoever you are, thank you for bringing that up. So here was the, here's what happened. I appreciate to call. Ryan Lemon, we took four teams last night. Yep. Ryan Lemon's team came in sixth, but two of the teams had already qualified.
Starting point is 00:23:04 So Ryan is in the final. Yeah. He literally was the last team to get in. The very last team to get in. And they got in because hubby's daughter knew that Beyonce had the most Grammys. Yeah, she helped us on that final question, too. We wanted to put Parks and Rec. She's like, no, Parks and Rec have only had like four or five seasons.
Starting point is 00:23:24 Let's try a trivia question for you, Drew. Drew, this was from last night. Caliperi, who are the eight players that play their whole Kentucky career for Calgary? that have the most points, but were not drafted. Not counting the guys' issues. Most points not drafted. Most points not drafted in their Calipary career. Ryan knows the answer because he was here.
Starting point is 00:23:49 Do you? It's going to take me while to even think of someone that wasn't drafted. Shannon, feel free to jump in if you want to be hard of it. There's one thing you should know very easily. Wasn't drafted. You all in the audience. Anybody want to guess? Dominique was ninth.
Starting point is 00:24:05 He's actually not one of them. Darius Miller was drafted. Derek Willis is one. There you go. You got one. Man, I'm really can't even think of anyone that wasn't drafted. That was any guess. That's the problem.
Starting point is 00:24:18 How's nobody getting the obvious one? Nobody going to get, how quickly we forget. Oscar Sheebway? I was just thinking, was he not a second round pick? No. Oh, I thought he was picked. Well, there's one. I have no others.
Starting point is 00:24:32 Anyone want to guess? Do you know, Mario, you weren't here. You want to guess one? Boy, you are terrible at this. We're trying not to do dead air here. I don't have it. Oscar Shibway, Aaron Harrison, yeah,
Starting point is 00:24:44 Alex Poitris, Isaiah Briscoe. That's a surprise. We did not get briscoe. Jacob Toppin, Ashton Hagen's, Derek Willis, and the final one was Davion Mitz.
Starting point is 00:24:58 Not one of those people entered my brain. Yeah. Yeah. Well, there you go. See, when you don't, maybe Cal was right. When you don't get drafted, nobody remembers you existed.
Starting point is 00:25:06 unfortunately. We'll take a break. Very back. KSR. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. So apparently Bob and Jamestown broke KSR. We went off the air right during his call, but we're back now, I think. So you all didn't miss anything. Me just ran about the Reds and then doing a trivia question that they didn't get any of the answers. It's probably good. Same just the embarrassment. So don't worry about it.
Starting point is 00:25:35 859-280-2287. Draft Kings, we have a KSR parlay. I need you to put some De Naro down. What is it? What is it? We're doing an NBA when it's on the Draft Kings app. I just bet it. It is the calves to cover, the Mavs to cover, and the Cleveland, Boston under. Okay. It's already up. Caves and Mavs and under. And it's plus 530. We just put it up. Okay. It's a long one. It's a long one. You can win big bucks. We like the dogs tonight. I feel it.
Starting point is 00:26:05 The draftkings.com. DK.K. App promo code is KSR. UK baseball, the pre-the-NCA tournament, so, you know, bracketology. The big one is D1Baseball.com. We're the number one overall seat. Yeah, overall number one seed. How about that?
Starting point is 00:26:25 Number one overall seed. The reason is we beat Arkansas. Just beat them. And Texas A&M lost their series as well. So they put us as the number one seat. We have. more wins against quad one teams than any team in the country. How about that?
Starting point is 00:26:39 At this point. So what? They're at Florida this weekend and they come back here to wrap it up against Vandy next weekend. So at Florida, Florida's got one of the best hitters in the country. Like the two best hitters in the country play in the SEC, but like not for good teams. Florida and Georgia. Have you seen the story about the Georgia baseball player? No.
Starting point is 00:26:58 I want to say, I think he has 43 home runs. What? Oh, whoa. Yeah. He has, I think he hit home runs in like seven. in straight games. My goodness. He's going to be the number one picking the draft.
Starting point is 00:27:08 He's hitting like 468. That's pretty good. No, has anybody know this? Yeah, his name's like Condon. He's going to be the number one picking the draft. He's hitting like 468. And I think he, I may be wrong, but he has like 43 home runs this year. So anyway, we play Florida.
Starting point is 00:27:25 Yeah. What if we're the number one overall seed in the baseball tournament? Didn't see that one coming. You know, we think about it for football, but we never think about baseball maybe being a number one. one overall seat. That's incredible. As long as we don't collapse, we're going to never have to leave Lexington to go to the college world series.
Starting point is 00:27:45 Like, you could go to the college world series and never have to play anywhere except Kentucky Proud Park. It's going to drive me nuts if I'm gone when they make the college world series. That's on my bucket list. This would be the time we could do it. You're not going to be here. Well, you're going to go, right? If they make it, you guys got to go.
Starting point is 00:28:03 We haven't talked about it. You should. No, I mean, like, take Mario. You guys, I mean, I'm not telling you what to. So it's a Ryan and Shannon trip. Why can't you go? Be gone when it's happening. You and Mario should go just the two of you.
Starting point is 00:28:19 Go have fun. Go to Dairy Queen on the way. But no, I mean, wouldn't it be amazing if they finally are able to make the trip? Like I said, it's a bucket list thing for me to try to get to go. What else would you go except now? Then this was what I'm waiting on. You can take down the record LSU set for shots at that bar. You got more money than the can's owner.
Starting point is 00:28:37 Shannon, would you go? I'd go with Ryan, yeah. See, there you go. You two and Mario, just the boys. Take Billy if you want, just the boys. You all go. It would be quite a trip. I would love it. We got to get there first. I'm excited about the games here, as you said. Being able to host all of them, just having the region last year was so much fun. Do you have even more games to make the most of that?
Starting point is 00:28:58 I'm looking forward to that. I'd also say, everybody, if you've not been to a UK baseball game, that series against Vanderbilt, it's almost. unless we get swept by Florida, then that series against Vanderbilt is going to be to play for the SEC title. Kentucky's only won at once in its history. They've only won it one time.
Starting point is 00:29:15 And they're going to be at home against a Vandy team that is not as good as they usually are with a chance to win the SEC. On your home field. On your home field. Like, not this weekend, but next weekend, people got to try to make it. That would be an awesome environment.
Starting point is 00:29:31 Yeah, because they'll have a celebration of some sort if it does happen right there after the game. So it's different. doable. It's in their hands. Now, they're only one game up on Arkansas and one game up on Tennessee. So, like, they got two teams they have to worry about here. And Tennessee owns the tiebreak. Tennessee owns a tiebreaker, yeah. As exciting as it would be to get to Omaha, winning the SEC and baseball is pretty dang hard to do. And that is right in front of them for the taking, I think, for the first time as an outright, I believe. Yeah. In the long time. In the NCAA tournament projections, seven of the top 16 teams in the country are in the SEC.
Starting point is 00:30:04 Crazy. Seven of the top 16 seeds in the entire country in the SEC. Who's next? Michael. Michael, go ahead, Michael, 30 seconds. Hey, this is about NIL. Can the, do the incentive for the players, like for every football, like, say, $500 for every non-conference to win? Can't do that.
Starting point is 00:30:27 Not allowed to do it. And it's stupid. But the NCAA has a rule. You can't give any incentives for winning. you can't give any incentives for sacks or points or anything, which is stupid. Like, again, the NCAA, the rules are as dumb as they could be. Right now, they ban you from doing any NIL money for things that matter, and you can make an unlimited amount of money for doing nothing.
Starting point is 00:30:59 Makes no sense. I mean, think about how stupid that is. Yeah. I appreciate the call. Similarly, you can sign for any amount of money, but the NCAA forbids you from having a contract. Right. So, like, you can't sign a player to a contract, even though now that would make a lot of sense. Yes.
Starting point is 00:31:22 The NCAA bans it. The NCAA has, it's the dumbest rules. I mean, think about how much better this would be if you could promise a player instead of a million dollars. You could say to them, you get $200,000, but if we win, if we go the final four, you get $800,000 more. That'd make a lot more sense. Yes, it would. But NCAA doesn't let you do that, Drew, and I think that is so stupid. We're going to look back at when this gets cleaned up, and these guys that are transferring every year right now and just double-dipping on all this,
Starting point is 00:31:58 they will have taken advantage of when things were just a little too messy and unorganized, and we'll look at how crazy it was. some of the dollars these guys were making, just not for their name, image and likeness, just to go to a school. In the NBA, every seven or eight years, they redo their television deals. And agents have figured out that the best time for your client to be a free agent is the year after the new television deal kicks in. Because the teams, the salary cap goes up, the teams all have a lot more money, and they get antsy to spend it, right?
Starting point is 00:32:29 They just decide to spend it quickly. So dudes get way overpaid the first year after a TV deal. This is what this is right now. Yeah. With NIL being just made legal, the dudes that are going right now are getting way overpaid. And in a couple years I'm with Drew, it won't be like that. But these guys are the winners. You can't blame the players.
Starting point is 00:32:53 I think they're trying to take advantage of the system the way it is right now. Yeah. Who's next? Pickleball Paul. Paul, 859, 280, 2287. Go ahead. Two things, Matt. Outside Dillingham and Shepard, what players that were on the team and recruits coming in would probably not fit into Mark Pope's system anyway?
Starting point is 00:33:13 And the other day on the air, you said you wasn't a very good ping pong player, so thank God you don't play pickleball. I didn't say I wasn't a good ping pong. I'm a good ping pong. I'm not, you know, I don't play it every day. But what was your first part of your question? He's already gone. Which player wouldn't fit in with Pope's system? like from last year
Starting point is 00:33:33 yeah that wouldn't have fit in with his system anyway Ugo Ugo would not be a good fit for Pope's system I'm not sure if I thought Big Z would have been a good fit Big Z would have been a good fit
Starting point is 00:33:52 I think he'd have been a good fit I don't know if like Jordan Birx would have been a good fit I'm not sure if a do would have been a great fit I think he'd like to have him because he's such a good defender but I don't know that that's now but I think Z would have been a good fit I think Trey Mitchell from last year's team is and a dude like Antonio Reeves would have scored 900 points in this in this team I mean Reeves in this system where you're running motions to get guys open he might have scored 40 a game but what track Cal hit us with the
Starting point is 00:34:31 all did you see what I did and we were trying to guess and it was Mitchell playing that high post they had like five assists in the second half I think I think you see a lot more of that from Trey Mitchell if he were in that system. What about Edwards or Wagner? Those are the other two. Not great. Maybe Wagner, because you could get to the, I don't think Edwards would. I mean, you got to be able to shoot.
Starting point is 00:34:53 With Pope's system, if you're the one through four, you've got to be able to shoot. And you got to be able to move. Like you got to be able to move. You can't stand still. And with Cal, a lot of it's standing still and using your athleticism. So a guy who's really athletic but isn't a great shooter or doesn't necessarily move the whole time is not, in my opinion, a great fit. One thing I'm excited to see, and you saw a little bit of it in the Sweet 16, is Travis Perry's battery does not seem to drain. He is constantly running around the court.
Starting point is 00:35:25 We saw it when they're running out the clock with the ball. I'm ready to see how he looks in Pope's offense moving without the ball because that's a guy. Defenders are going to be gassed trying to keep up with him. The only dude he has on the roster right now, he has, I mean, just look at how he built the roster. He has two bigs that are more stationary in Garrison and Williams. They're going to play the five, and they're going to be maybe sometimes at the free throw line, sometimes down low.
Starting point is 00:35:52 But the other four dudes are just moving. And, you know, some people have said, well, we don't have enough bigs. I think you'll see him go with four guards or four guard forwards a lot of the time. Maybe, you're not guards, but a guy like Colin Chandler will play the four for him, so, right? Do you think Andrew Carr can play the four? Well, he'll start at the four. But if he goes out, it wouldn't shock me if sometimes they're playing Colin Chandler or Trent Noah at the four. Because that's how they're going to, they're going to want dudes who can move.
Starting point is 00:36:24 The five, think about the dude he had at BYU that went to Louisville, Caliphah. Well, he wasn't really, he didn't move a lot. but he was a good passer, right? That's what they'll use. And then Williams and Garrison, they'll use to attack the boards and defense. And Pope didn't have a player with more than 30 minutes last year. We're used to seeing guys get used a lot in how Kentucky was for 15 years. You're just going to see a lot of those bodies and different rotations being used throughout the game.
Starting point is 00:36:48 Hey, did you know the reason that Kentucky has some of the fastest horses in the world is the same reason cornbread hemp has the fastest hemp? I didn't realize that. Or not the finest hint. They are quick with churning that stuff out, though. they can do it quickly. The limestone rock bed underneath Kentucky makes our soil rich with minerals and that feeds the horses but also grows the hemp. There's the connection. That's right. Hemp crops are like horses. Kentucky Proud. Go to cornbread hemp.com slash KSR. Enter your code KSR 30% off your order. It's cornbread hemp. We'll take a break. Be right back.
Starting point is 00:37:26 It's Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. 859-280-2-82-87. Sorry to the folks on the stream for WAP. I know you were off the air for a while. Some of the other ones came back on. One thing that's consistent,
Starting point is 00:37:42 I-Heart technology, top the line, always. Our inconsistency is very consistent. Yes. Always works. Rarely a problem, Ryan, with anything. And it, you know, happens only with our show. most of the time, which is good. Glad to see that. Well, the sad thing is they miss Bob and James Town's call about the Reds
Starting point is 00:38:02 and your breakdown of the Reds. That was the sad part. Shea Gilgis Alexander second in the MVP race. Comes in second. Yokic wins three of the last four years, but close, but no cigar. Like many listening, I was disappointed. I saw some of the NBA talking heads and former players defending a little bit online. It's kind of saying if he can't win it this year, what else is the guy got to do to take the thunder and have the season he did to steal it from yokech as good as yokech as is but i was i was rooting for shay and thought it was going to be his most of the year amazing to me that a guy that most
Starting point is 00:38:39 of the year he was at kentucky he was considered to be the second best player on the team when the season started he was considered to be the second best point guard on the team becomes the second best player in the NBA that is a pretty amazing rise if you think about he was brought to you be the backup for Quad A. Green. That was his role. And now... Can you, I mean, think about that in hindsight. He was Quaday Green's backup. Yep. And he ends up being second in the MVP race.
Starting point is 00:39:10 No, nobody. Probably not even Cal or saw what this dude could do once he got to the NBA. He was just unbelievable. Because he wasn't even a McDonald's All-American, was he? Not unless he got one of the year committed to Kentucky ones, but I don't think so. I don't think he was. I mean, Quate started the first third of that year. Yeah, he did. She really blew up against Louisville.
Starting point is 00:39:30 He might have already had the starting job at that point, but that was kind of his signature game. Remember, he got traded. That's the other thing. I mean, one team gave up on him. The Clippers gave up on him. I forgot about that. I mean, not because they didn't like him, but they were getting, I think, was it, Paul George maybe? Paul George straight up.
Starting point is 00:39:46 And they traded him, and now he ended up being what he is. You know, we talked about when Shea was here, I remember talking on this show, how he would be able to use these weird angles and get his body. body to a position where he could get the ball off the glass. And I remember thinking to myself, that's, that'll, that'll never work in the NBA. It worked. And it works in the NBA. Not only does it work, it works amazingly well.
Starting point is 00:40:06 That kid is, he's so good. And most people don't know because they're not on TV very much. They will be now. I mean, because they're, they have a chance to win the whole thing. But they, most people haven't even seen him. I'm just a surprise about how marketable he is too. I remember interviewing him and he was timid, you know, just gotten here, didn't have a lot to say. And now that commercial would shed home home.
Starting point is 00:40:27 It's one of every three commercials. I mean, he's a little much. Yeah, he's like the NBA fashion guy that's doing the GQ photo shoots. It's just the kid that showed up in Lexington. Not the same guy. Wouldn't have believed it. Wouldn't have believed it. Not the same guy.
Starting point is 00:40:38 Who's next? Christian. Christian, go ahead. 30 seconds. Hey, man, I'm actually from Harlan County. And we're going crazy down here. Good. Just what a better story than Mark Pope coming back,
Starting point is 00:40:51 bringing in the top two guys in the state championship that battled out. in Rup now on Kentucky. I mean, that's just a crazy first season. Great story. Reminds me of Dominic Hawkins, who basically threw the state tournament, played his way onto the U.K. roster. I think in some ways, Trent Noah is like that, too. I fully agree. Him and Willis is going to be the next.
Starting point is 00:41:20 You know, you haven't got to do it a lot this show. That's right. You keep taking their time. You keep taking their time. Let them talk. Yeah. The next two. The next two are they going to be?
Starting point is 00:41:32 He said he was going to be the next buzzer. Buzzer. It's going to bother me all there. Could be anybody. Fill in the blank. Fill in the blank. Use your imagination. BJ.
Starting point is 00:41:42 BJ, 30 seconds. Go. Yeah, what's up? What's up? I was just calling the LSU comment. I just wanted to clarify that he, I think you were saving face a little bit because we had the top two defensive tackles in the portal down here on a recruiter. visiting. We got outbidated by
Starting point is 00:42:00 Oklahoma and Miami. So I think he just came out and said the same face to get the fan base calm down. So I think he just said that because of course we're paying players. But anyway, Shannon. Perfect. Okay, that's good context. All right, because he did mention the defensive
Starting point is 00:42:23 line. So if they did have two guys they were outbidded for, but he acted like they don't spend any money. And I know, that's a lot. Now he might be right that they overspend or they weren't going to overspend, but he acted like they wouldn't pay any money at all, and that's stupid. Nobody believes that. Nobody believes that's coming from him, especially at LSU, not one word. Yeah, I mean, LSU, come on, they paid whenever. One person on text machine writes, all right, Matt, you pick
Starting point is 00:42:53 who else is going to be added to the roster. You have to decide today. Jackson Robinson, and I'll just say and Lanier. Get them both. Oh, we're going both. Why? Wow. I think it's more likely we get one than the other, but I think it's more likely we get both than zero.
Starting point is 00:43:12 How about that? I will, I didn't know that was within the rules. I will just to be different, say Jackson, Robinson, and the Wuga popular from Miami. That would also be great. I think he's another one with a lot of potential. But my real answer is Chaz and Jackson. I just wanted to give a different angle.
Starting point is 00:43:29 don't even know another person. You guys took the two, the only two that I would guess, besides Jackson Robinson. So I'll just say Jackson Robinson and somebody we haven't talked about yet. So you think there's probably a name of somebody. Another NBA guy, maybe. Yeah. You mean another draft guy?
Starting point is 00:43:44 Just throwing Ryan some options here. All right, well, good. Well, all right. So I will be gone tomorrow. You guys will be here at the bar. Yes, we will. Dairy Queen's story. We're excited to tell.
Starting point is 00:43:53 Yes, Mario's going to be on a little Billy as well. I'll be back on Monday. next week for people who like to come and see us. We will be here on Monday, Tuesday. We're at the PGA on Thursday, Friday. Still don't know yet about Wednesday. So Wednesday, up in the air, but we will be here on Monday and Tuesday. You're excited to go to the PGA?
Starting point is 00:44:13 It was so cool yesterday to kind of see it before it becomes the PGA. As they're setting it up, it was kind of cool. It's really nice out there. Yeah. Big shout out. That's the best that course has ever looked. And I think it's going to be a great week there. Thank you all very much.
