Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headlines. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves.

Listen to Sports Slice on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your And for more, follow Timbo Slica Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Clivert Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee.
Starting point is 00:01:14 We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. A rep. My mama want you to wave at her.
Starting point is 00:01:30 What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford Show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Comedy Up Broadway and Lexington welcomes Michael Pallasack, May 17th and 18th. Then catch Kevin Farley, May 23rd through the 25th. And don't miss Sam Morel.
Starting point is 00:01:54 May 31st through June 2nd. Comedy Up Broadway opened in downtown Lexington in 1987, and they're still bringing the best and stand-up comedy to the area 37 years later. Call 859-271 joke or visit Comedy OffBroadway.com. This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones. All right, good morning, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, grandpas and grandmas, aunts and uncles.
Starting point is 00:02:23 This is the Tuesday edition of Kentucky Sports Radio. Ryan Lemon, Drew Franklin, and Shannon the dude here as we begin our trek without Matt, without the Big Toe, who took his taking off this week. And we're going to fill in for him next couple weeks. Of course, as always, KSR sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office. What's he do, Shannon? Call T.J., he'll make them pay. He'll make them pay.
Starting point is 00:02:43 At some point today, we need to do our Kentucky-branded tweet of the day, our Whiskey Thief Song of the Day. And we have a brand-new A-Vision Glass text machine number, Drew. Oh, how about that? I have... What is that a new phone? I have a new phone with a new number. Well, come on.
Starting point is 00:03:01 Hold on. Shannon. Is it still a droid? You have to see that he has a brand new iPhone right in front of me. A Vision Glass bought us a brand new phone. Wow. And we have a brand new text machine number, but Drew, how do I get it open? Oh, my goodness.
Starting point is 00:03:15 How do you open your text? You don't. This is going to be a long conversation. I'll teach you iPhones. But I don't know the pass code. Oh, well, that would be an issue. We will need the pass code. Okay, I texted him.
Starting point is 00:03:26 There he goes. I like you. You're just getting brand new iPhone. because you don't know how to... Brand new A-Vision Glass text machine. Okay, I think I can open. He gave me the code here. Okay, I'm in.
Starting point is 00:03:39 I'm in. Why are you getting this? And then there's the text. So look, I'm going to give out the number, and we'll see who will be our first texter. The phone number, not the past... On the brand-new, A-Vision-glass text machine. Okay, here's the number.
Starting point is 00:03:51 502-735-3680. I don't know any easy way to remember that. You got to say that again. Yeah. 502. 502. 735-3680. 502, 735-3680.
Starting point is 00:04:09 We'll see he'll be our first one. How about that? I love this. This is a little, you know, I've been sitting here with you for several minutes. You didn't mention this new iPhone. Well, I've saved it for the right moment. Wanted to make sure we're all excited about the new A-Vision Glass text machine number. I got a little worried when we sat down that our technicals might have some difficulties,
Starting point is 00:04:25 but it seems like we're running smooth. You actually sound very crisp. I get in the car headed over here and I hear Shannon and Billy having technical problems and I thought no, not today. By the way, I hear the thing dinged. Mario, will you teach you? I don't know how to do it.
Starting point is 00:04:40 I don't know how to silence it. We should have just let it go and let it just keep being in. This is like teaching Grandpa how to run the remote control on a TV. But we're, no technical issues. You guys got your straightened up this morning. We're good, man. We're all good. Don't you worry about a thing.
Starting point is 00:04:55 We're going to be just fine. This is going to run like a well-oiled machine for the next 10 weeks. We're good. I'm worried this iPhone, someone threw you a curveball at the last minute. You know, we've had meetings about the meetings, about the meetings, making sure we're ready. You have a long to-do list. You have a big checklist. Big checklist.
Starting point is 00:05:11 But then, you know, first morning you get thrown an iPhone that's binging every few seconds. You don't have to turn it off. I'm worried that the iPhone might become a distraction for you. Mario's got it. He's got it under control, so we'll take care of. We do have a lot to talk about. UK baseball, UK football got a huge commitment. but I think we need to start and just briefly talk about Kentucky again hit by deadly tornadoes.
Starting point is 00:05:37 I mean, again, I mean, used to be Oklahoma was Tornado Alley. I feel like it's now Western Kentucky, if nothing else. Dawson Springs gets hit hard for the second time in what, three years. Yeah, 2020. We had the bad one in Western Kentucky. Mrs. My Home Turf got hit again, Hopkins County. Madisonville didn't seem to be affected too hard, but all the way around it, Charleston, Morton's Gap, Dawson Springs, a lot of the smaller communities.
Starting point is 00:06:03 But, you know, just Dawson Springs being again, it's such a small place. And have this happen twice in three years is tragic. Hopefully, you know, they were already building back. Hopefully this one won't take as much. But, you know, there was at least one loss of life. You know, this was a very big deal back home, and we're thinking of praying for them again. Closer here to Lexington, I know Mercer County got hit really hard. They had a death due to storm-related issues.
Starting point is 00:06:29 I think a Richmond got hit. I mean, it's just Conley Bottom, down at Conley Bottom got hit. And this is on the 20-year anniversary of the Masters and Station Tornado this weekend. So I don't know. Maybe the earth has shifted because Tornado Alley seems to be coming right through the backyard. I grew up on that side of the state. We had some bad ones occasionally, but not nearly as it's frequent as it seems to be here recently. Even just a few scares, you know, they've been lucky they've had plenty of wide.
Starting point is 00:06:59 and warnings recently that didn't amount to anything, but it just seems to be a lot more frequent. I hope it's not the case that the alley has shifted into the bluegrass. Shannon, Louisville, and Bullitt County get hit this weekend? Yeah, yeah, I know a lot of houses were damaged, trees falling on houses. You know, that stuff can be rebuilt, but I'm sad to see that there was, as Drew said, at least one fatality, they're in Dawson Springs. So our thoughts and prayers definitely with those people. Well, thoughts and prayer with everybody involved with that.
Starting point is 00:07:25 It was an awful weekend again for Kentucky storms that went through. Did it affect your show Friday in Lebanon? No, no, we were actually lucky. I think as we were finishing our last song, it started to sprinkle a little bit, and it was all good as far as the weather went there. Good, good. Wolfel had the big festival, the Jack Harlow Gazebo Festival. They had to cancel Sundays.
Starting point is 00:07:47 He was going to perform just to be safe. I heard Billy talking about that. Yeah, he didn't get to perform at his own festival because of the storms on Sunday, right? They had a good Saturday, but, I mean, they were planning on a pretty big Sunday as well, and they had to cancel it that afternoon with storms coming in. Well, again, thoughts and prayers out there, but, you know, you'd like to say we're through it, but it seems like no, that's just maybe the beginning of more to come in the summer. You've got to think they're hopefully, you know, they're still dealing with it three years ago.
Starting point is 00:08:16 Yeah. Just get hit again. You can't stop thinking about those people. So this morning, tickets went on sale for UK baseball. And Daniel Hager's here. He's going to join us at 10.30. He said it sold out within 20 minutes. It has already sold out the tickets for Friday's game at noon against Western Michigan.
Starting point is 00:08:34 That's to me, that's awesome. That's incredible. It's awesome for anyone that wasn't up all morning on their computer trying to get tickets. I did not have a great experience. I got on at 7.30 a.m. Yes. I was number two in the Ticketmaster line. Well, you're upset.
Starting point is 00:08:50 I'm thinking number two. And I knew the number one. It was my buddy. He texted me. He told me to get on. Mani, so we're one and two. Hour later, I get booted and I'm number 144. No.
Starting point is 00:08:59 And when I finally get in there, I can't even see the map. It's counting me down to buy tickets. I don't even see tickets. They went quick. I'm mad. You know, I didn't have as much luck. I ended up getting some through a friend, but it was a nightmare trying to get them when they went until at 9 a.m.
Starting point is 00:09:13 So I'm not surprised they're out. How'd you get kicked out? I don't know. I had the monitor up all morning, just sip my coffee. I'd look over every little bit. Oh, you're still number one, four, or number two. Just a minute, we'll be there at 9, and then out of the blue at reset, and I was 144. So the game is Friday at noon against Western Michigan.
Starting point is 00:09:30 Sold out. Sold out. So we're going to have a watch party here at KS Ball. I don't know. They might have some randoms they'll release in the bleachers, but from what I saw this morning, it completely out. Reserve seats are definitely sold out. They were going to do Thursday single game. I don't know if they held some back for that or not, but what was out there today?
Starting point is 00:09:49 It went quick for the all session. So we'll have a watch party here Saturday then, after the show. show. We'll do the show here, Saturday, Friday. We'll do the show here Friday from 10 to 12. Game starts at 12. We'll have a big crowd here for folks like Drew that got kicked out of line and couldn't get their tickets. Oh, I'm still getting in there. Can't keep me out of there. But, you know, it's big news for UK baseball. Rated the overall number two seed, highest seed ever in school history. They get to host the regional for the second year in a row. First time that's ever happened in school history. And they've got, you look at the bracket, they've got a great shot to make it to Omaha on the college World Series this year.
Starting point is 00:10:24 First time they're back to back in the postseason, I believe. Yeah. You mentioned Daniel, our KSR Beat Rider. He has all the information. We'll be on soon. But there's that stat of like the number one seed hasn't won in like a gazillion years. So if number one can't win, number two is the best seat. There you go.
Starting point is 00:10:40 Tennessee, enjoy your number one. I don't mind the number two place. There's been a little complaining about our draw. I guess Indiana State was a team that was maybe wanting to host and we end up getting them in Lexington. but overall being the number two, having the action at Kentucky Proud Park. It's awesome to finally see them announce it yesterday, and then it's right here in front of us. I can't wait to get over there.
Starting point is 00:11:03 Yeah, Indiana State won 43 games this year. You know who the most famous baseball player ever at Indiana State is? Who? Larry Bird. He didn't play baseball, did he? Yes, he did. He played one game, and guess who was it against? Kentucky Wesleyans.
Starting point is 00:11:17 Kentucky Wesleyans. This is facts. You can look it up. This is why you know this, right? Nope. He played one game after they went to the final championship game. He played one game before he got drafted by it and went on in the NBA and was against Kentucky Wesleyan. He played first base.
Starting point is 00:11:32 I don't know. I don't remember. We have to love to look that up. Probably not. Kentucky Wesleyan. But Shannon did it sting a little bit, seeing that Tennessee won the SEC tournament. Yeah, a little bit after having to split the regular season title. But, you know, hey, there's still the number two overall seat.
Starting point is 00:11:50 I think you've got to be happy with that. I mean, I know it's going to be a great atmosphere at Kentucky Park. And I was asking Billy this. I'll ask you this, being a baseball guy, if you're Mingione, do you pitch, do you start your ace in that first game? Or do you think, okay, we can handle this team without our best. We're going to save him for later on. I say you go ahead and throw your ace first game.
Starting point is 00:12:11 What would you do in that situation? I mean, I think you have to. This is the NCAA tournament. You know, I was kind of questioned why he didn't do that at the SEC tournament. And then I saw the reason why that first round game was, double elimination. You were still going to be alive the rest of the tournament, so you saved your better arms for when it was single elimination.
Starting point is 00:12:27 But this is double elimination too, right? I mean, to start off? Yeah, but I think you want to go get it. Get it over with? Yeah, you got to get it. And plus, you know, if you're number one guy, Pouser, he hasn't pitched since last, since he'd have over a week's rest. He should be ready to go.
Starting point is 00:12:41 What are your thoughts about it? Yeah, I think I would. I'm more interested to just see the SEC tournament as a fan that was excited. It didn't really go that well. You know, 11-0, LSU, you have one hit. I'm more interested to see just if that lingers at all and if that matter, more of the whole team, especially the one-hited me more than the pitching in the first LSU game. But I don't know, there's been a lot of that tournament's irrelevant.
Starting point is 00:13:03 I'm wondering going one and two in that if that lingers. I would want to get the wins with over with and get your race out there and be done. I don't have to go to Monday or anything crazy. But I'm interested to see what, because everything was going so well, then you lose that Vandy game where you share the title, then you go one and two in Hoover. I'm just excited to see what team comes out. You did beat Arkansas's ace.
Starting point is 00:13:22 That kid that's going to be a first round pick, you know. And jumped on him quickly. That was exciting to see. Kind of had that Buster Douglas mentality we talked about last Friday. So that was exciting. But, you know, I'm ready to see them play like a number two overall seed being at home, whoever's on the mount. So we've got a lot to get to. Like I said, Daniel Hager will be here in about 15 minutes.
Starting point is 00:13:41 Give us all the more the deets. I bet he'll even be 30 minutes early. I bet he may even show up. Marty, he'd be sitting here looking at us. Could be. And we've got to get to a. with the UK football commit. Shannon saw a bear.
Starting point is 00:13:51 I mean, there's a lot to talk about this when we come back. 859-2-287. That's 859-2-80-228-7. Mario has unlocked the phone. Do we have our first one already? Okay. Is it show how many messages are on there? One, two, three, four.
Starting point is 00:14:08 Can't be giving out the pass code. Now someone's going to, you're going to leave that phone here. We know that. Mario set them up with facial recognition. We're only Ryan. Okay, here's the first one. Oh, that's not the first. Show you the first one.
Starting point is 00:14:21 I want the first one. This is a preview of the summer, I'm afraid. Oh, there's a bunch of them. My goodness. I can't read all those. Welcome to having an iPhone. There's the first one, says, test for Ryan. That was today.
Starting point is 00:14:37 That was it, yeah? Wow. Wow. Okay, hi from Hoptown, hello hunters. We'll teach you apps. Okay, we'll do all that. All right. We'll come back.
Starting point is 00:14:45 Take your phone calls 859-2802-287. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Starting point is 00:15:46 And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
Starting point is 00:16:05 and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Starting point is 00:16:22 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. What's up, guys?
Starting point is 00:16:42 This is Clever Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What?
Starting point is 00:17:00 Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. All right. Welcome back, Kentucky Push Radio. Ryan, Drew and Shannon.
Starting point is 00:17:27 Drew now has proof that Larry Bird played baseball against Kentucky Wesleyan. Somebody sent you a picture. Kurt on Twitter sent a picture. Larry throwing the ball and it looks like he's got a huge jaw. Of course he does. Of course he's got a big chaw in. Have some tobacco, Larry. He's from French Lake Indiana.
Starting point is 00:17:43 Of course he does. But that's him in a baseball uniform, Indiana State. Mario is still educated me on our new A Vision Glass text machine. I had to do facial recognition. We're trying to take off the passcode and just so I can go straight to it. What about all the other things, these meetings, these things you have to learn and do over the summer, is this going to distract you? Yes, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:18:07 Yeah, but we already have like probably 50 texts. How does Matt keep up with that and go through all those? I don't know, but lots of people have asked if I will tweet the text machine number, and I'll be honest, I have already lost where I wrote it down. So would you, one more time for the listeners and for me? Mario Couton, 502-735-3680. All right. 36-80.
Starting point is 00:18:30 Very excited about this. We do miss the text machine. Matt relies on that a lot for this feedback or maybe even a random topic somewhere, so it's nice that we'll also have access to the listeners for the next couple months. Feel free to hit Ryan up at any hour of the night with that. Well, slow down. Now, of course, a lot of stuff we're going to get to, but the big story to me was Shannon saw a bear in Gatlinburg.
Starting point is 00:18:53 I like how fascinated it you were with the fact that I saw a bear. Like, yeah, yeah, you know, you're in Gatlinburg. There's bears everywhere. But that, like, that was like out in the middle of the road. Yeah, we had a cabin, you know, up at the top of a mountain. We were heading down to the city and right in the middle of the road is a bear. And I couldn't remember. I know there's like a phrase, if it's brown, lay down, black,
Starting point is 00:19:13 black fight back. I couldn't remember if that was accurate or not. I wasn't going to get out of the car to find out. I know that. But somebody, I guess, had just set out like a plate of food. And, of course, the bear was going to come up and just have a snack. And that's what was going on as I was trying to get across the road. I was like, okay, I'm just going to sit here and just wait for this thing to cross the road before I do anything. I wasn't going to try to, you know, shoot it away. So I think that's right, though.
Starting point is 00:19:39 If it's a black bear, you've got to fight back against it, right? if you're walking and you come across a bear, you're supposed to fight. I don't know, but I'm pretty sure the park rangers are telling you not to leave a plate of food out for bears. I mean, yeah, it was clearly like just out for bears, right? Why else in the mountains would you put out a plate of food? Like they were feeding it like it was the neighborhood cat or something, you know? Well, the line is if it's brown laid down, if it's black, fight back. Okay, I thought that was right.
Starting point is 00:20:06 And if it's white, good night. You see a polar bear. You're dead. You're done. Yeah. Well, I was fascinated by just seeing Shannon's picture because it was a big bear just kind of out there in the middle of the road. Yeah, that's another reason I wasn't going to go hiking, you know? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:20 That was something that came up. Hey, should we go hiking? I said, I don't have bear spray and don't have a gun with me. So no, I don't think we're going to do that. But the other big story involving Shannon over the weekend, Drew, was people questioning Shannon's haircut at our show on Friday. Yeah, I know. I got a lot of crap over that. I was just trying to just trying to shape it up a little bit, you know.
Starting point is 00:20:39 I didn't choose that haircut They just gave it to me I guess they I don't know if they put a bowl on my head Or what that day You know the dumb and dumber haircut I didn't realize that until the picture I guess Normally I put a little
Starting point is 00:20:50 You know put a little product in the hair Yes I did in that morning I had a long drive I just got up and just Rolled out of bed as I was And yeah People were giving me a lot of crap
Starting point is 00:20:58 Over my haircut People on the internet are mean Shannon You know we got We take that photo With Matt as a farewell Right Kind of felt like he was quitting
Starting point is 00:21:05 To be honest We never take group pictures That felt like a goodbye Yeah, it did. And I get on to social media just to see everyone and be like, oh, what a great photo of KSR on Matt's last show of the summer. And it's just all about Shannon's hair. Everything is about his hair.
Starting point is 00:21:20 Yeah, well, at least I still got some. Internet's a cool place. Good point. Good point. Because Matt used to introduce Shannon as Shannon with his frosty hair and spiked hair. I never had frosty hair. I think that was just Matt being jealous of my hair. I never had frosted tips.
Starting point is 00:21:36 So I don't even know where that came from. Did you put the product back in it for your show then Friday night? I got it, yeah, especially after all the crap that I got. I said, okay, let me go to the store here and get some hair gel and throw it in there, so I don't get criticized for that. All right, 859-2-2-287. We've got some lines open if you want to call and get in. Then we'll have Daniel Hager join us here at the bottom of the hour, talk more about UK baseball.
Starting point is 00:21:56 I do want to hit on the UK football commit that happened over the weekend. Martel's Carter from Paducah Tilman ranked as the number one recruit in Kentucky in the 2020. 25 class. Number one. Now, he's originally from Chattanooga, has transferred into Paducah to play for Paducah Tilman. I understand there may be more transfers from Tennessee. Follow him to Paducah Tilman.
Starting point is 00:22:20 Purdue Tillman, I think, is getting ready to load up to make a big run. Scoop or Scuba? Or is it news that's already... I would just keep an eye on that. Okay. I think Martel Carter may be just the first of a couple studs coming to play for Purdue Tillman. But you lock up the number one recruit in Kentucky, Drew.
Starting point is 00:22:36 That's big. Yeah, they've done that four out of five years after a run where, you know, Louisville had a pretty good grip on the state in recruiting. Vince kind of stepped in and said, no, this is our state, and they've gotten the number one player four out of five. He's the sixth commitment, I believe, in the 2025 class, put their first one on defensive side of the ball. And on three, which we prefer, we're big on three fans.
Starting point is 00:23:00 Their rankings consider them a top 200 prospect. So number one in Kentucky, but being top 200 in the nation is a big deal. That's a guy, a playmaking safety that a year from now, I think you said he's going to, or he did say he's going to early enroll. He told that to Jacob, KSR Plus, but that's a guy who you might see playing right away as a freshman in some form of immediate impact. You know, the safety position in recent years, Jordan Lovett, a Kentucky kid, Ty, Bryant, Kentucky Kid. Now this guy, Kentucky Kid, I mean, they're loaned up. Vito Tisdale. Vito.
Starting point is 00:23:32 Fido, forgot about him. He was there. I miss Vito. Where did he end up? He went to the Dion experience, didn't play much. I don't know where he went after that. But Martellis Carter is a great addition. Very excited for the future with him.
Starting point is 00:23:47 He played wide receiver, did some special teams. He's a guy that's all over the field. Like I said, a playmaker. I had a thousand yards receiving and 13 touchdowns. So even though he's a safety, that's a guy that can do a lot on the football field. And as I said, if he comes in in December, like he says with his plan, I think it wouldn't be surprised if he's out there. playing freshman minutes. Do you say it's four-star?
Starting point is 00:24:08 Yes. Four-star kid. Pretty much four-star by everyone. On three has them in the top 200 and the composite of all those. And I think, you know, if you read the story, I think of Jacob did it, you know, there's this running back in Tennessee. He's going to try to get him, recruit him to Kentucky. I think there's a tight end. Don't be surprised that those kids all end up playing at Paduca Tillman if they're going to all commit to Kentucky. I can think that's the plan. I like it. In Jacob's interview with him, he had a quote, I even wrote it down here.
Starting point is 00:24:33 He said, my job is to flip UK around and make it popping again. So I guess we made us Bowel eligible again seven years ago. We're going to make Kentucky popping again with Martell's Carter. When did UK become defensive back you? That always seemed to be our Achilles heel over the years. But now with Carrington Valentine, Malik Harrison's going to be probably the highest draft pick this year. Max, yeah. Drew Phillips this year.
Starting point is 00:24:58 It does for years of not really having standouts at that spot. Every once in a while you get a Travard Lently. And even here, there's been frustrations with the defense in the Stoops era. But you look up on draft night, and in the last several years, there's been at least one of them. You watch on Sundays, you've got guys like Mike Edwards still out there making plays. They really have done a great job with that secondary. Lonnie Johnson, he's still playing? Yeah, I mean, keep naming him.
Starting point is 00:25:22 Chris Westry, he was making lots of money. He still might be on a roster. The coaches have changed a little bit. Frank Buffano's head of the last few years, and he was big on this recruitment with Vince. So they've done a great job in the secondary. You know Stoops loves it being a secondary guy. This is a big one. Maybe it's a combination of Stoops and Coach Frank combining their efforts, whatever,
Starting point is 00:25:43 because it's definitely been a step up. And we've got not just good first-ring guys. They've got good depth at a reposition. Key Dron Smith! You know, he was here for almost a full year. That's a portal guy, but still played well. Zion Childress will probably get drafted or get a chance in the league. Yeah, and Carter picked U.K. over Auburn, the two finalists,
Starting point is 00:26:02 but even Ole Miss and Michigan had been recruiting him. I mean, his offer sheet is most of the big dogs. This was a big get by the big dog and Bufano to get Kentucky's number one player. Look, the A-Vision Glass text machine now closed again. How do I get this open? Oh, my goodness. I'm telling you, Mario, this is going to be a thing. He's going to call me in the middle of the night.
Starting point is 00:26:19 Slide up. Is this it right here? The alarms are going to be going off. And the ones, the most recent are the ones at the top. All right. I'm just going to read that one. Does Kentucky basketball have a more difficult time recruiting international players than other schools? will Mark Pope have a better success rate with that than previous coaching?
Starting point is 00:26:35 I don't know what kind of connections they have there. When Cal got Chuck Martin just a year ago, he was pretty big in the international scene. I don't know the long-term outlook with UK basketball right now, but I'm sure they'll consider it. A lot was made of Pope's binder at the Peach Jam. Yeah. I guess he's walking around with a stack looking like a phone book, but he's got all his notes on his targets in there.
Starting point is 00:26:56 So that has all the secrets, and as big as it was, I'd say he's going global with his, with his targets. Just trust him. Just trust those guys and Coach Brooks and let them do their thing. Coach Hart. All right, well take a break. Come back. Daniel Heygirl, join us. We'll talk UK baseball. Get into all the details about the Batcats hosting the NCAA regional. We come back on Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important
Starting point is 00:28:42 to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Starting point is 00:29:09 And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? quarterback on office blue 42 Hey, Rhett, my mama want you to weigh better.
Starting point is 00:29:32 What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J., he'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Starting point is 00:29:55 Here's Matt Jones. All right, welcome back. Kentucky Sports Radio. Ryan Drew and Shannon, joined now by Daniel Hager from Kentucky Sports Radio. He's the beat writer for On 3 UK site that covers UK baseball. That's right. So that's the big story right now, Daniel, UK baseball. I mean, what a great, unbelievable season they've had.
Starting point is 00:30:12 Get a host the region for the second year in a row, back-to-back years in the postseason. I mean, it's just keep creating new things that they've been able to accomplish. Yeah, it's like year after year. I know Mingeon yesterday he talked about when he came in, you know, 2017 immediately makes a regional. but then, you know, 18 missed the tournament, 19 missed the tournament, 21, 22. And he said that he started taking that for advantage after his first year, immediately making it. And he was humbled a little bit, but now, you know, 23, the number 13 overall national seat
Starting point is 00:30:41 and then now the number two overall seat, which is really incredible. So Daniel started covering high school football for us two years ago, quickly got the keys to the UK baseball beat. Good timing. Yeah, last season was his first one. There might be a little Daniel Mojo there. But you went to Hoover last week, as I was saying earlier. Help me put that behind me.
Starting point is 00:31:02 I was a little disappointed and getting excited about all those games. You were there for all of them. We'll just start. What happened? We'll go game by game with LSU. That was pitching, right? But with the bats, was anything that concerning? They moved on a little bit past it.
Starting point is 00:31:13 But I thought Kentucky was much better than a one-hit game at this point in the year, especially when LSU wasn't even throwing their best stuff. Yeah, LSU had Luke Holman. I think he had a 2-2-ERA this year. So he was their best guy. Oh, so he was throwing the best guy. Yeah, he was their best guy. That's why he's on the show, Mark.
Starting point is 00:31:27 Oh, he can correct me like that. And that's why I kind of won at Georgia over LSU, because I know we talked about this on our YouTube show before. The tournament even started. Like, I was worried about LSU. I was like LSU and Florida are two of those teams that could go on a deep run. Florida did not. They got eliminated early.
Starting point is 00:31:42 But LSU, like we saw, I mean, they were dominating. And then, like, South Carolina, they came back and won, like, 11 to 10. And then that last game, they were down to eat nothing and came back. So just opening the tournament bad. Like, I know we talked about this. like Ryan Walshmidt, it seems like when he doesn't get going, like the lineup doesn't get going behind him. I think he was 0 for four in that first game and then 0 for three in that last game, which is they didn't really get it going in that middle game. When they won, he hit two
Starting point is 00:32:07 home runs. So just like I'll put it behind us because just the good thing is now, you know, all the way through the college world series, you got Oregon State and that other regional don't match up in the super regional. You're not playing SEC teams anymore. Like it's definitely a step down in competition, Indiana State, a western Michigan and Illinois and then and then other like Nichols, Oregon State, Illinois. So I would say put it behind you. It's the best teams, and they needed those wins to get in the tournament. They went from really a four-seat to a two-seat, and so I wouldn't really worry about it going forward.
Starting point is 00:32:39 Did you hang around to watch the Vols win it? I did not. I immediately would go. No shot. No shot. So you're deep into it. What is the secret been? Because he's been going out and getting these transfer guys and finding a way to get them all to play together.
Starting point is 00:32:55 And you can tell they're in the dugout and on the field. They're like a tight-knit group. People ask me all the time, what has Mnjohn done to kind of get these past two seasons to work by going about the way he's done it? Well, first, they adopted the get weird slogan. Like everyone's learned to love the pink hats and the Spider-Man plushy in the dugout. It's just these guys are having so much fun playing with each other. And every time we talk to him, they reiterate that just how much of a family it is. and just going even deeper in the woods with Mingione,
Starting point is 00:33:26 it's like in the last two or three years, they've coined them as the RPI wizard. Like this guy coaches, he's scheduling the best of the mid-majors like we know that Tubby Smith used to do they talk about. And he's bringing them in and they're stacking up the wins. And like last year they were top 10 at least and quad one wins. And this year they're number one by a large margin. So they're getting there stacking up these wins to build these resumes.
Starting point is 00:33:49 And then like you touched on Ryan with the transfers like the last two years, they've really made themselves like a transfer portal paradise where these guys who are maybe struggling in their second to last season of college baseball can come to the UK and do Excel, like Nick Lopez, for example, comes from USC, and he was kind of thought of as a utility piece. He didn't start the regular season,
Starting point is 00:34:09 and now he was named all SEC First Team, so it's just like they're taking these guys, rehabilitating them, and that's just kind of been his secret sauce. As our listeners can tell, Daniel knows his stuff here. Follow him Daniel Hager, KSR, and he does the show on our YouTube channel, Back Cat Beat, right?
Starting point is 00:34:28 Yeah. So you'll want to tune into that as we get into the postseason. You mentioned the Spider-Man in the dugout. I love the Spider-Man meme. I think Wallsman started that when we get a home run. Pink Hats, there's the pit crew thing with Devin Burke's. You're at all these games. Is there one you have a favorite or one that doesn't make it to TV
Starting point is 00:34:48 or one with a side story we don't know about because it's constantly something going on with that dugout that's part of the reason this team's having so much success. My favorite is either the first or second inning, and it'll be over there on third, and he'll put those arms out, and the whole entire dugout go, oh. And it just drives the opposing team crazy.
Starting point is 00:35:09 That's where Vitello at that Tennessee series, he was like, he's like, they're doing that little league stuff over there, even though they've been doing the robes in the dugout. They were. They were. They were. And so, yeah, it's just, it's always fun to see. It's a great atmosphere there.
Starting point is 00:35:22 You know, I know your favorite, the Baby Shark. Actually, why do they do that? I could do without the Baby Shark. Two and old. Why do they play Baby Shark? I have no idea. I've always been asking, and they've never given me an answer for why it's happening. But now they expand on it.
Starting point is 00:35:34 They've got the guys in the costumes running around out there. They've adopted it. I don't know. Well, you came in, you said they'd already sold out tickets in, like, the first 20, 25 minutes. Obviously, it's going to be a huge crowd out there. this old area has kind of become baseball. We've become a baseball town almost following the cats. Yeah, it's been really cool to see.
Starting point is 00:35:53 And like Drew touched on, this is my second year on the beat. And growing up, it's like UK was always okay, like going to the cliff. They were all right, but they were never that kind of team. In 17, the first season at Kentucky Prep Park, it was like bring a little bit excitement, but then the next few years they kind of failed to follow up on that. And now after last year, people get excited. They come out. UK was unranked to start the season.
Starting point is 00:36:16 picked the finish fifth in the east, and now they come out, and they've dominated SEC play, SEC co-regular season champs for the second time. So it's been really cool to just see, and then even the fans embracing them, they've set their attendance records like six of the seven highest in the crowds in history of the last two seasons. So it's been really cool to see Lexington embrace those guys.
Starting point is 00:36:36 I've set my own personal record for games attended. Prior to the last couple of years, it was about two. I've seen a lot more Kentucky baseball now, really loving it over there. You were, again, being at every game and then being projected where they were, was there a moment in the season where you saw, like, a click? I know they talk about the Kennesaw State Series internally, but just watching them go through the SEC, was there a specific series where you're like,
Starting point is 00:36:59 all right, maybe this team is for real one of the best in the conference? I'll say it started kind of early. Like you said, the Kennesaw State Series was kind of a disaster. They came out and whooped them. Like, it was not even close. And then Georgia comes to town, and they've got one of the best players in college baseball, Charlie Condon and UK bull rushed them. Like it was like they outscored them like 34 to 13 over the weekend.
Starting point is 00:37:21 And so you're like okay, like maybe that Kennesaw State Series was a bit of a fluke. And then they go out and they beat the end of the series against Alabama and then Missouri and Auburn. They kind of start stacking them up and then they maybe hit that little dry spell against the Tennessee and South Carolina series. And that's when the national media was kind of like, okay, here's where these guys fall off. That's where they'll maybe fall to a two seed in the tournament or maybe a late regional host. And then they just went out and they beat Arkansas in a series for the first time since 2012, beat Florida in a series for the first time since 2016, and then won that Vanderbilt series first time since 2017.
Starting point is 00:37:54 So they righted the ship, SEC tournament. You know what it is. It is what it is. Some teams need it more than others. But that's kind of where they got things back on track and really cemented themselves as one of the top teams in the country. So answer the question we had earlier. Do you start your ace in game one? You know, Minge Young kind of didn't do that in the SEC tournament.
Starting point is 00:38:12 What do you think the strategy will be now? with game one on Friday. I think the strategy would be a little different when you're playing Western Michigan at Mack School. I do think that Trey Pruzer will start, which he's been their most reliable guy, down the stretch of the season, and then maybe a Mason Moore in the second game. But I think we talked about this other day. I think you probably should start your race in the first game.
Starting point is 00:38:35 Just really get out ahead of the curve. You don't want to get in a situation where you're trying to bullpen a game and you get into a situation where you're playing Western Michigan in that first game, and it's like 5-5 in the eighth inning, and you're like, uh-oh, like we could have used our best arm and maybe won this game 6 to 1 or something like that. So I just go ahead and I'd get it over with at least secure that first win, so you're not already in the losers' bracket having to make your way out that early. They had a press conference yesterday after the selection show,
Starting point is 00:39:05 and you're over there asking questions. How are they feeling? You know, they hosted last year maybe a little nerves having such a big event in Lexington, Kentucky Proud Park's first postseason, but a lot of these guys like Mason Moore, Devin Berks, a lot of the big names had big games last year, so it's not new to them this time around. Are we feeling some confidence internally, I think? I know Mn Geone told the story recently of them seeing the new bleachers and how they're all giddy and made them turn the lights on late at night.
Starting point is 00:39:30 So we know they're excited, but does it seem like they have the right mindset hosting again for second year in a row? Yeah, I think so. And I think that's why going to that Super Regional LSU last year was so important, like playing a team. as good as that on the road. They've learned so many things from that, and that's what led them to being like, okay, this year the road to Omaha is going to go through Lexington, and that's what they've done and set themselves up nicely.
Starting point is 00:39:52 And Evan Byers and Nick Lopez spoke yesterday, and they were both excited to go. They're ready to go. The whole team is ready to go. Walt Schmidt, when he's been talking, getting a little emotional talking about MNG own here lately, the guys seem to really love him. I know I haven't gone to all these press conferences,
Starting point is 00:40:04 but the SEC Network interview in Hoover, he got pretty emotional. I think we even played that a little bit on Friday, but these guys really seem to love their coach. Yeah, he's a player's first coach, and that's what they've said all year, like how much they love and support Mingione, and he's a guy that they can go to at any time of the day and just talk to. And he made a funny slide.
Starting point is 00:40:25 He was like, usually when guys are coming up to me telling me they're my favorite coach ever, they're one to bump in the batting lineup or something like that. But when you go out in public and say it, it's a bit of a different story. But they really do love that guy. And just being around him for two years now, and two years at the SEC tournament, just kind of one-on-one. He's a great guy. Got something on the A-Vision Glass text machine said,
Starting point is 00:40:44 please repeat your Twitter account. He said, you're excellent. At Daniel Hager KSR. And it's H-A-G-R, right? E-R. Oh, it is E-R. H-A-G-E-R. This is a Frederick Douglass Bronco over here, Ryan. I'm surprised you're all.
Starting point is 00:40:58 I haven't been sitting next to each other at games. Yeah, you said you were in 2020 class with Dick Kale? Yeah. Well, you know, they're probably going to win another state football title this show. I hope so. I mean. Before we go to the break, Ryan Walden's been, I told you, he's my favorite player. His name's Ryan. He plays left field and leads off. That was me. But I like
Starting point is 00:41:14 the other Ryan too. Ryan Nicholson, first base. He's a St. X kid. He's a Kentucky kid the transfer that came in. He's had a great season. Yeah, which he's probably been the most surprising player to me because he started off the season like really slow. And then his defense at first wasn't great. But SEC play started and this dude just exploded. Like 16 of his 18 home runs have come against SEC play. Oh wow. I think it was like the opposite. Like I know Caglio from Florida really patted those numbers against the Stetsons and whoever they were playing. But Nicholson has really stepped up in SEC play.
Starting point is 00:41:46 So him and Ryan Walschman also, I think Ryan Walshman finished top three or top two in the SEC and just batting average against SEC competition. So these guys play better against these better teams. They didn't show it in the SEC tournament, of course. But just they've been really great this season. You've convinced me that was irrelevant, the tournament. You know, I went into it. I was so excited.
Starting point is 00:42:06 I was ready to watch every game. and now I'm like, oh, it doesn't matter. I got the Caliparian philosophy now that it doesn't matter. Hoover, we didn't go. What are you talking about? It's NCAA. Well, we've got to take our break. We'll go to the phone line.
Starting point is 00:42:17 If you got a question for Daniel talking UK baseball or anything else, give us a call right now. 859-2802-287. Got some people who were saying our eye-heart signal was going in and out a little bit. But it'll clear back up. Don't worry about that. We'll get it all taken care of. 859-2-80-2287. We'll be right back.

Listen to the Clifford show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio. Starting point is 00:45:12 com on three sports, following at Daniel Hager, KSR. Backcat Beat. Batcat beat. But Drew, that tells us about one of our sponsors. Oh, that's right. I'll pull to you. I wasn't quite ready for it. I would like to tell you about UK Federal Credit Union.
Starting point is 00:45:25 Tell us about it. I am a proud UK Federal Credit Union user. Use it every morning, and I like their mobile banking, because we've heard a picture is worth a thousand words. And with UKFCU's mobile banking app, a picture can be worth even more. Use your camera to save time and make a mobile deposit or pay bills, check balance, with a touch of a button. I do all of this every morning.
Starting point is 00:45:45 And for added security, you can set up card controls and travel notifications in the app. That's at UKFCU. It's an award-winning and one of the best places to work winner as well. It's membership eligible-required, federally insured by NCUA University of Credit. University of Kentucky Federal Credit Union. I use it so much, I can't even say it. I'm on the app. UKFCU.
Starting point is 00:46:08 We love them. A-Vision Glass has a new text machine. If you missed it earlier. What is it, Drew? remember it? I don't want to just say a wrong number and people start hitting it. 502. 535-3680. We've got a ton of them. And this one's for Daniel. Is anyone concerned that the UK baseball team is 9-9 in their last 18 games? You know, I would say yes and no, because they are in the SEC, which is the best conference in all of college baseball. So
Starting point is 00:46:35 you're going to run into some hiccups. I would only say maybe a little slightly because in all of their last few series towards the end of the season, they've got blown out in one of the games every series, like Tennessee beat them 9 to 4, Carolina beat them 10 to nothing, Arkansas beat them 10 to 3, Florida beat them 10 to 1,
Starting point is 00:46:54 and Banner will beat them 12 to 4. That would be that negative energy. That'd be the only thing I'd be slightly concerned on is like there's always one game at every series where they're a little bit uncompetitive, and then even in the SEC tournament, they got blown out 11 to nothing. Yeah, we've already moved on.
Starting point is 00:47:08 We look forward, not back. But they're SEC co-regular season champions for a reason. They earn that. They deserve it. So I wouldn't put too much stock into that going forward. How much do we know about the teams coming to Lexington? You've already started some bios for the website. I know there's been a lot of talk.
Starting point is 00:47:27 Fans didn't want to see Indiana State. Start with Western Michigan. What can you tell us about what's coming to town? Yeah, like you touched on earlier, Indiana State was a team that they thought they'd be in good-shaped host of regional. They were number 10 in the RPI. There was only one team ahead of them in the RPI that wasn't a host. I think it was Wake Forest. But, let me think, Illinois.
Starting point is 00:47:48 Indiana State lost to Evansville, right? So they lost their conference championship? Is that what? Yeah, I think so. Losing to Evansville, man. That happens to people. All great baseball players come out of the Evansville area. Indiana State, they were both projected to host in the final field of 64 from D-1 baseball
Starting point is 00:48:06 and baseball America. I guess they do that on geography. It's a bit different than the basketball tournament. Because even like the 15 seeds and the 14 seeds, they got two seeds that aren't even close to as good as Indiana State is. So a little down on that. But further than Indiana State, like I said, Illinois, they're out of the Big Ten, but in the Big Ten and baseball is really not great.
Starting point is 00:48:28 So they won it. So props to them and then Western Michigan won the Mac. But both of those teams don't have many quad one opportunity. So this is kind of new territory for them. this weekend, but we'll dive more into that as the week goes further on. Yeah, let's just get it done against those teams. It's true.
Starting point is 00:48:45 We do want to give a shout out to Northern Kentucky University. They're also in the NCAA tournament for the first time as a Division I school. Shannon, when you and I played, they were in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Division II. That's right. Yeah, now D1. D1 won the Horizon League, 23 to 5 in the championship game
Starting point is 00:49:02 against Youngstown State. But so we need to get behind Northern Kentucky because I believe their first round game is against Tennessee at Tennessee. So we need to root for U.K. here in town and then root for Northern Kentucky down when they play Tennessee this weekend. Go Norse. Absolutely. I'll root for anyone against Tennessee.
Starting point is 00:49:19 I hit my first collegiate home run against Northern Kentucky. I had to think for a second. That's the first one. Oh, you're fair. There's so many. Well, there were three. Okay. What about the others? Hit one at home Kentucky Wesleyan's Field and then I hit one in IU Southeast in New Albany. Oh, you hit one in Indiana? Oh, yeah. Is you doing it taunting for the home state crowd?
Starting point is 00:49:37 Do they remember you getting out of state crossing that river? Their mistake. Their mistake. But here we have another question for it. Indiana State does appear to be a tough draw. Why in the number two spots so early? Like I guess they're saying why would we have to maybe face a team that is overrated in our region? It shouldn't like the number 16 seed, that host is one of the best?
Starting point is 00:49:58 Yeah, yeah, I would think so. Yeah, I said the same thing, but I mean, just looking into it, people were saying it comes down to geography or something, which kind of makes no sense to me. We don't care about that. We don't want the hard team. No, I feel like UK and North Carolina are the two that got jobs. Like, North Carolina is the number four national seed. They end up with LSU as their two seed, like, the hottest team in college baseball. You would think, like, the 15 national seed and the 16 national seed would get an LSU or an Indiana state.
Starting point is 00:50:23 But like I said, you're at this point of the season, and UK has done as good as they are, have done all year. Like, you've got to take care of business this weekend. There's one more from the aviation glass tech machine. And I don't know. I'm throwing this at you. You haven't even seen it. asked Daniel about Transylvania Youngblood coming in as a transfer
Starting point is 00:50:38 next season Derek Terry is kind of our guy on the transfer beat and then with the season still going out I haven't really dove into that We're trying to go to Omaha I don't go to the portal Let's talk about Nick Lopez
Starting point is 00:50:52 He got out of the portal First Team All SEC with a great mustache If they make it to college World Series That's the week you're gone Yeah I'll work it out I'll make it work I'm not gone the whole week
Starting point is 00:51:03 I could pop in Omaha bounce around. Not a hard no, but one game at a time, Ron. I'm not going to look at Omaha. We've got Western Michigan. Well, we're trying to set it up where we're going to do KSR out at the stadium, either like Wednesday or Thursday. Try to have Coach Mingione on and maybe a player Wednesday or Thursday,
Starting point is 00:51:20 because then Friday is game day. Did we say pretty please? I'm doing really pretty please. We're not a know yet. We're not a know, and they're open to it. And then we'll have a watch party here Friday for the game. It starts at noon. Daniel, thank you for joining.
