Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.

This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me.
Starting point is 00:01:19 He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. A rep. My mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker.

Starting point is 00:02:13 This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones. It ain't Matt Jones, it's Black Jones. You know what it is on this Merry Monday. Myron McCalf filling in on this wonderful Monday. It's beautiful up here in Minnesota. I hope it's beautiful down there. I wonder if you all have stopped partying yet because...
Starting point is 00:02:39 No. Last night and I'm watching, right, because it was on late. I mean, it was really late. That was an all-nighter, right? And like between innings, they kept showing Drew in the stands. So like, I'd be watching and I'd be like, wait, is that Drew in the stands? It's like they found you and just what a dramatic. Like it's one thing to get to the college world series for the first time in program history.
Starting point is 00:03:09 That is amazing. But with the drama attached to it. So how much fun was last night for Kentucky's fans? That's going to be an all-timer, Maran. I was there, as many people saw in my cowboy hat. I got there. I mean, the game's at nine. I got there at 7 and the line to get in was already down the street heading towards our football
Starting point is 00:03:35 stadium. I've never seen anything like it. Then it's a mad dash for the people with general admission to get their seats. And by like 745, people are ready to go and they're still an hour and 15 minutes left. I mean, and the crowd had energy for that hour. They brought in a live organist that they don't normally have. He was electric. I mean, he's playing Bruno Mars and Mali.
Starting point is 00:03:54 This guy was the real star. But there was just so much energy from an hour before all the way. way through. We had the dramatic, the drama there in the seventh, all the way through that and the celebration. It was just so much fun from start to finish. I've slept about three hours, and I know a lot of our listeners that were part of the 7,500. They're running on fumes too, but it was worth it. And everyone was there. We'll remember that for a long time. Yeah, you don't need sleep. I mean, you don't need sleep after something like that. You just, you want to savor the moment and really enjoy it. I mean, shout out to the organist, though, right? Because to be a part of that,
Starting point is 00:04:27 that's 30 weddings, you know, between now and the next five years that people are going to book him for. So that's a smart move. I thought it was just an awesome moment in sports, right? As an outsider, you know, when I heard, is it Nick Mingeon? Is that how you say his name? Yes, correct. So I thought it was so cool after the game the way he talked about the journey, right?
Starting point is 00:04:52 Because here's the thing, man. People don't appreciate the journey, you know? Like everybody in this instant gratification, maybe I sound like an old man, everybody wants everything now. And, you know, he said he had never been a head coach before this. Not even he said at T-ball. So to get to this moment,
Starting point is 00:05:10 that must have been just so special. You could see him almost like recounting the journey and what that was like for him and to get this win. And correct me if I'm wrong, fellas. This isn't like one of those NIL-18 transfer teams, right? This isn't like one of those teams, right? This is more of a homegrown group. How would you describe it?
Starting point is 00:05:32 There's a lot of balance. Some of the stars on this year's team were part of the reason they won the region last year, including the pitcher Mason Moore that pitched last night. He was a part of last year's team that came up just short. Same with the catcher, a lot of familiar names. But then they did really well in the Portland Bride Guys Inn that were stars this season. So he had a nice blend, and that's part of what made him so special, how Ming Gen.
Starting point is 00:05:51 Was it bring in a little bit of everything and make it work? Was it Grant Smith? that catch? What was it? Third and fourth? That was... That was electric, right? He'd dropped that one couple of innings earlier that led to their big inning. Then he made the big play to kind of stall the rally. You know, Myron, we were kind of trying to convince you last week and kind of try to tell you that Lexington is a baseball town.
Starting point is 00:06:16 I mean, the biggest U.K. basketball is really probably Kentucky is probably really a football state, but Lexington is really a baseball town. And man, Drew and those people that stayed out there to almost 1 o'clock in the morning, partying last night. They set through the rain last weekend, set there to one in the morning last night. I mean, that tells you all you need to know about what this community thinks about baseball
Starting point is 00:06:37 on that program. It was fun to watch, man. And like I said, the drama is what makes it what it was, right? Like, to me, if you blow him out, that's still cool. You're still advanced. But, you know, makes more struggling. And, you know, what, he pitched 30 pitches or something like that, the bottom of the fourth or seven, whatever that was.
Starting point is 00:06:57 And, you know, you got to get out of a jam. And then you just had so many wild moments. And then you have, what, the Pack 12 player of the year, Travis, what is it? Bazanza, what's his name? Bazanza? Banzanza. Banzana. He's the projected number one overall pick.
Starting point is 00:07:13 Travis, he is? Man, one or two, yeah. He was, I'm like, wow. Like, this is like a movie, right? He's up with a chance to bring this game back. and maybe be the hero and then to win it the way that you did. That was just fun, that was a fun sports moment. And again, the post game, Nick Benjione kind of celebrating and recalling everything he had
Starting point is 00:07:37 been through because credit me if I'm wrong. He wasn't, like there was a stretch where people weren't sure about him, right? Is that accurate? Oh, that's very accurate. Yeah, there was a couple, about three seasons ago where he was kind of on the hot seat and they just happened to make a big run in the SEC tournament that year to save his job. and since then, look at what he's done. You know, he's had two great seasons since then.
Starting point is 00:07:58 I love it. I mean, I just love that, just that element of just, you know, enjoying the journey. This is Merry Monday. We're going to do this every single Monday. So I want people to call in. What's the number? I should probably know about it. 859-280-2287.
Starting point is 00:08:14 859-280-287. I want people to call in, right? And I want you to tell me about something that made your smile. I'm guessing a lot of people to be last night. But I also want to know, like, where this ranks. You know, I mean, I understand football has had some highs. Obviously, basketball has done some incredible things. But, like, where does this moment rank for everybody?
Starting point is 00:08:36 Let me tell you something about hosting KSR last week, though, by the way. So the Al Green thing took off in ways I wasn't really prepared for. And just throughout the entire week, people were sending me playlists. And I'm like, what? This is a lot. But I also, like, a lot of BBs. women are following me or, you know, tweeting me a little bit. And, you know, all I want to say is, it's the power of Al Green.
Starting point is 00:09:02 It has nothing to do with me. And I'm just glad people embrace that. But today, I think, is more of a celebratory moment, first college world series. So what I want today is, if it's okay with y'all, I want to have some celebratory music. Is that cool? Can we do that? And there's a song, I hope we have it, James Brown, the boss. Do we have the boss?
Starting point is 00:09:25 Who's in charge of music? I'm not how much. Shannon. I got you. Shannon, play the boss real. I want you to play this song because I thought about that because you're the boss now, right? You make a run like this to the first college world series in program history. The last SEC team, if I'm not mistaken, to get to a college world series.
Starting point is 00:09:43 And I think it should be a celebratory moments. I want to play a lot of James Brown throughout the show. I want to hear from everybody. Are you all going to Omaha? Is everybody going to Omaha? What are y'all going to do? It's not looking likely, Myron, and it's a sore spot for me. So, yeah, thanks for bringing it up in the first second. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:09:59 What happened? What don't I know about Omaha? Well, you know, Matt's not here. Drew's not going to be here. They got, you know, you know how he doesn't work with the radio station. Money's an issue and all that. Yeah, yeah, I got you. Thanks.
Starting point is 00:10:11 Thanks for bringing me down. But you know what? I didn't mean that I wasn't trying to rub it in. But you know what? Listen, it'll be fun to be a part of the local crowd too. And Omaha, Omaha is a cool place, man. I went to Omaha when I was in high school. I told you all ran track in high school.
Starting point is 00:10:29 I was on this junior Olympic team or whatever for Wisconsin. So we made it to nationals. And Omaha, this gigantic high school they have there is where they had the national meet. So I thought I was pretty fast. You know what I mean? Like it was one of those situations where I realized I was fast in Wisconsin. You know what I mean? Like I didn't realize that I wasn't necessarily fast in America, you know, until I went to nationals.
Starting point is 00:10:53 but we're registering for this track meet and you know you go up you tell them who you are and then this team shows up and there's a big guy I don't know six foot three the coach of the team and I go hey you know hey man
Starting point is 00:11:09 good luck coach looking forward to this they were from California and the guy turns to me and he says I'm not the coach I'm on the team and that's when I knew we were in trouble because if this six foot three Thanos looking dude. This giant is on the team.
Starting point is 00:11:27 I knew that we weren't going to leave Omaha victorious, and we didn't. But I do hope that Kentucky gets a win, continues the journey. Because, I mean, that was just fun. Fun to watch, man. It all evolved like that. Are we allowed to play the Nick Mingeon post game?
Starting point is 00:11:45 Do we have any of that? Oh, yeah. Yeah. I think Shannon can get that because they play on the pre-show. Yeah. I mean, I'm glad you mentioned his. that his post game joke.
Starting point is 00:11:54 I got choked up, just listening to him and emotion and his voice after the game last night. It was huge for him and huge for the program. I mean, I'm telling you, I don't know if there's been a bigger sports weekend in this town ever. I mean, I'm not kidding you. I mean, they've had some big football wins, but for the whole weekend, dude, they allowed three hits. The place was packed both nights. This is maybe the biggest sports weekend in this town that I can remember. to the college world series.
Starting point is 00:12:23 It looked electric. It definitely looked electric. Do we have calls yet? Do we have any calls? Yeah, yeah, we do. Let's take our first call on this Mary Monday. I want to hear from the people. Who do we have on the line?
Starting point is 00:12:35 Let's go to Brandon. Brandon, how you doing this Merry Monday, man? Good. Good, good. How old are you, Brandon? You sound young. 12. So, Brandon, what is this?
Starting point is 00:12:49 been like for you. What are you excited about on this Merry Monday? What made you smile? Well, so I live in Omaha and I'm a Kentucky fan. Okay. Nice. Wow. I went to the regals last year and then there's a kid on the team named
Starting point is 00:13:06 Eli Small. And so our dads are kind of good friends. And so he's actually going to come back to his hometown and play baseball. Isn't that awesome? And you're right there. I mean, you're in Omaha. I'll That's got to be fun. And then here's the other thing.
Starting point is 00:13:23 Like sports memories are generational. You know, like if you're older, I assume, and you've been watching this baseball team, this is literally the first time this has happened. You know, maybe you've been watching for 20, 30, 40, 50 years. A 12-year-old is like, this is just what we do. You know what I mean? Like, this is just going to become the norm for him.
Starting point is 00:13:40 So it's always amazing, like, how that happens from generation to generation. For everybody in the studio, where does this rank among... Kentucky sports memory. Like where is this on the list? What is it behind making a run to the college world series for the first time in school history? I mean, I was at New Orleans when they won the basketball championship.
Starting point is 00:14:03 It's going to be number one. That's going to be hard to top. This is firmly in my top 10 of all Kentucky memories. And I've been at a lot of cool things. I don't know exactly where it will fall. It might be top five. I mean, part of it was comparing it to basketball, you know, football, you got a bowl game. That's your postseason.
Starting point is 00:14:19 This is more of a turn. tournament format, keep advancing. And we just haven't done that so long. So it kind of brought that March Madness feeling we've missed a little bit, too, bring it over to the baseball side. So I'll say it's top five. I don't have my exact list in front of me, but it was that much fun that I will be to remember that one forever with all my UK memories. I totally agree. It definitely had that March Madness feeling, you know, the tournament, when Kentucky's got a good team and they're rolling, it's hard to top the national championship, it's 96, 98, 2012. It's hard to top those. But man, and there's been some great
Starting point is 00:14:49 football wins. I don't want to take anything away from some of these football wins in this town. But that whole feeling all weekend, I mean, Myron, everybody was talking about it. No matter where you went, everybody was talking about that baseball game this weekend. Watching McCarthy with that slide, it looked like he was flying. It was kind of right where I was saying at a great angle. I will have that memory of him touching home plate as they go miss the tag second late. That was a rush that I've missed in sports for a long time, him getting the double steel there. Also on that point, a cool moment after the game, he said he told his teammate Robert Hogan
Starting point is 00:15:20 that he's filling a Pete Rose slide coming tonight. He's like, I'm going to Pete Rose slide on him. And then Hogan was interviewed after the game. And he said as he did it, he just yelled, oh my gosh, he did the Pete Rose dive. So he kind of called his shot there with the game winner too. I love it. That was a very cool angle we learned in the post-game press conference.
Starting point is 00:15:36 You all are baseball guys. What is Oregon State doing not covering home plate? Like, isn't that like the fundamental? Isn't that what your little league coach tells you in a situation? like that. That poor pitcher. Pitcher had a brain fart. I mean, he knew the guy was going to third and just didn't. Yeah, he just totally spaced it on that. But of all things, for the winning run,
Starting point is 00:15:58 for Kentucky to go to the College World Series, happened on a strike three wild pitch pass ball score from second base. By KSR caller, Noah McCarthy, who called him a shot. Also, he said he didn't have the green light to run. He said when he saw that the pitcher wasn't covering home, he said, I ran through a stop sign, just kept going. I mean, that, that poor, pitcher, that's going to haunt him a long time because he could have prevented that, but that was good for the cats. Well, and if you're McCarthy, that could only go one or two ways, right?
Starting point is 00:16:25 I mean, that can be an heroic moment or it can be a terrible moment, right? There's no in between with that. So, I mean, to go off instinct that way and to get the big run like that, it was incredible. But I was watching, I'm going, man, Oregon State, like, that's the basics. You know what I mean? And still at the end of the game, they got a chance to win. Give me another call. Who else is excited on this Mary Monday?
Starting point is 00:16:51 Let's go to Bonnie. Bonnie, how you doing on Mary Monday? So pumped. I cannot tell you I am a UK graduate. I'm a UK football fan through and through. I go to the softball games. I was not able to go to the baseball games. But I tell you last night when I was watching it on television,
Starting point is 00:17:14 I have to be at work early. and I could not pull myself away from the TV. I mean, I was excited. I had goosebumps. I was so happy for those kids, so happy for the coach and his speech afterwards. I mean, I'm still thinking about that speech after the ballgame. It was incredible.
Starting point is 00:17:34 I appreciate the call. And if you need an excuse to get out of work, just tell them to call me. I'll get you out. I'll let them know. Listen, it was a late night. You get to enjoy this day and celebrate because I'm sure a lot of people are in that same.
Starting point is 00:17:46 but we're going to talk more about this baseball journey on the other side of the break. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines.
Starting point is 00:18:07 We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the trials, the drama, the trials, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context,
Starting point is 00:18:24 and ask the questions everybody wants answered. SportsSlice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to SportsSlice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Sliced Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Welcome to my new podcast,
Starting point is 00:18:43 Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite there. Kier Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking.
Starting point is 00:18:55 Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses.
Starting point is 00:19:14 Steve Burns, Austin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're freed? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure,
Starting point is 00:19:34 and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free, our Heart Radio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. What's up, guys? This is Clifford Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game.
Starting point is 00:19:53 This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue of 42. Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Cliverts show on the I-Hart Radio.
Starting point is 00:20:17 app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Y'all hear this? That's the kind of music you jam, too, after you're celebrating. Paid the cost to be the ball. That's what I'm talking about. Let it breathe a little bit. Let James talk to you for a little bit.
Starting point is 00:20:36 Come on. You cannot not like James Brown. You have to love James Brown. And this is the kind of music you should vibe to on a celebratory. Look at me. Know what you see. I'm a bad. James Brown, the one and only,
Starting point is 00:20:49 and now Kentucky baseball is bad, which means good in some communities. So when I say bad, I mean good, just so I don't know if I had to translate that, because that was phenomenal what they were able to achieve last night. Everybody, though, it feels like it's probably running on fumes
Starting point is 00:21:05 a little bit. I'm also in that group, not because of the game, I watched it to the end, right? My daughter is going on a D.C. trip with her class. So they had to be at the airport at 3 a.m.
Starting point is 00:21:22 So I'm like, okay, 5 a.m. flight. So the game here locally ended at like 1230, 12, 45. So I'm like, do I get that hour nap? That hour and a half? Because the danger is if you sleep too much, if you get too into the sleep, you're not going to get up. And then you're going to be late to the airport, which is about 40 minutes from my house.
Starting point is 00:21:44 And then you miss the flight, and now you're the worst dad ever, right? So I just didn't go to sleep. You know what I mean? I'm like, I'm just going to stay up, take her to the airport at three, come back, get a few hours of sleep. You know, so it was worth it, though. She made it to D.C. So now I have my Merry Monday moment because she just texted me and said they got there.
Starting point is 00:22:04 She's good to go. And that was cool. But it was a, that's a late game. I mean, that's a long time to be up. 12.30 if you get out of there. And you're on Easter time, right? So that's what time to do. Yeah, 1.30. So what time do you get home after that? Drew, what time did you get to wherever, did you get home after that? Like, what time do you settle in?
Starting point is 00:22:23 I got home around two, but you know, you don't just fall asleep. I'm still seeing pump it up. So I'd say about 3 o'clock, I'm setting my alarm for 7. And I even had the thought, like, should I just stay up through this? Power through. Yeah, I got a few hours. You know, some people got on out of there, but a lot of people stayed to watch the celebration. You know, I was one of the last one to walk out of the entire park. So all of us that stay to the end, it made for very late night, but would do it over and over again, no regrets.
Starting point is 00:22:51 I loved how ESPN kept the coverage of the celebration, too, Myron. I mean, we got to all of us at home, got to enjoy, Jill, the video of it. Oregon State kids, to their credit, they stayed through the dog pile, stayed through the victory lap around the stadium to shake hands with the Kentucky kids. after the game was over. I thought that was kind of respectful. I wanted to add that about Oregon State. It was really cool that their team did that because that probably took 15 minutes, 10 minutes
Starting point is 00:23:13 where they're sitting in the dugout watching. And then when I'm leaving in the middle of the night and the parking lot, it's pretty much cleared. There was Oregon State people stopped us in the parking lot and shook our hands and said, thank you so much. Kentucky fans were so awesome. So I guess, you know, I hate that we, it was the end of the Pact 12 in Oregon State season, but it was nice to see them.
Starting point is 00:23:32 I'm an Oregon State fan moving forward. They were very gracious of everything in Lexington. It was good interacting with some of them. I appreciate them being classy like that, man. I mean, that was just a cool moment to be a part of, even if you end up losing and going home. Again, it's Merry Monday on KSR. I want to hear what everybody's excited about,
Starting point is 00:23:51 what made you smile, and where this college world series appearance ranks for Kentucky sports fans. I'll tell you a scary moment, right? Something that I was a little concerning watching, right? The pile up at the end of the game, okay? those are cool, right? Those are fun. But at some point I'm like, okay, who's at the bottom of it?
Starting point is 00:24:11 Yes. Because that was a full on pile on, bodies on top of bodies. And I'm going, someone's underneath there. It reminded me of, you remember when Nolan Ryan gets into the fight with Robin Ventura? Oh, yeah. Back in the day, it wasn't much of a fight. Nolan Ryan is just, you know, hitting them with like eight haymakers. And then the bench is clear.
Starting point is 00:24:31 Everybody goes down and there's a big pile. So what a lot of people don't know about that moment is Nolan Ryan is going from pummeling Robin Ventura to the way he tells it he's suffocating at the bottom of this pile. Right. So like he can't breathe. And suddenly he's panicking. After this viral moment, he's in the middle of it. He's at the bottom. And he said all of a sudden, Bo Jackson, who was playing for the White Sox at the time, starts pulling bodies off of them and just like tossing people aside.
Starting point is 00:25:02 And that's how he kind of got free. read from the pile, which is pretty amazing, but I was like, man, this pile on has lasted a little bit too long. Let's clear out to make sure everybody's good. I was happy to see everybody was okay and able to celebrate and have fun. And then again, for me, it
Starting point is 00:25:18 was the Nick Mingeo moment of just taking it all in, knowing that there had been a journey. That has to make it better, right? Like, if you're just someone who's there every year and this is just what you do versus you
Starting point is 00:25:34 knowing how what you had to go through to get there you can see the way that he appreciated and valued that opportunity i shared a video i caught it when uh everyone was dogpiling and celebrating i just looked over and mingeon was leaning against the dugout by himself watching his team so then i just started watching him because i thought that was pretty unique and then the team starts and they go around the entire stadium greeting fans all the way around the outfield around the warning track all the way down the left field and then he was sitting there waiting for them so it was probably like Oregon State, he probably sat there for 10 minutes and didn't participate in any of it. He was just watching.
Starting point is 00:26:09 And then he, of course, greeted him all with big hugs when they did their lap. But I thought that was interesting to see him not join at all. He sat back soaking it in. I couldn't see his face, but I imagine there might have been a few tears in those eyes. But that was an interesting moment in the postgame too. Yeah, I mean, just watching him post game, you could just see him in real time, just kind of going through everything he had experience to get to that moment. And again, I just, maybe that's not like an old man.
Starting point is 00:26:33 but that instant gratification world we live in where everybody wants everything now and right away, you know, and they just want to skip steps. It was cool to see someone who had clearly gone through every single step. I mean, he'd been an assistant coach for over a decade, I think, right, before this, that was,
Starting point is 00:26:50 oh, yeah. He never been a head coach before this, he said. Never been a head coach. No level of head coach. And just to grind and to get to that point, what is he, 44, 45 or something like that, and to have a team, reached the college world series for the first time in franchise history,
Starting point is 00:27:07 first time in program history. You got to respect and appreciate that. We'll be back after this. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in.

I'm talking, Tript Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Starting point is 00:28:19 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Starting point is 00:28:43 Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way.
Starting point is 00:28:59 Open your free, our heart radio app. Search learn the hard way and listen now. What's up, guys? This is Clever Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff, like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game.
Starting point is 00:29:15 This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at?
Starting point is 00:29:33 Hey, Ms. Parker. Listen to the Clifford Show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. I came in too early.
Starting point is 00:29:56 I was so excited. I heard James Brown, I feel good. I wanted to jump in. But you got to feel good. If you're a Kentucky fan, after what happened last night, college world series, first time in program history, the last SEC team ever to make it to the college world series, Omaha. It's going to be a lot of fun. What is the first game? Is that Saturday? What day is that?
Starting point is 00:30:20 We don't know yet, right? Yeah. They play the winner of the Georgia, North Carolina State game today. They play that winter, but we don't know what day they're going to play in Omaha yet, right? No, I don't know yet. If they make it far enough, I might read it. revisit my plans. Supposed to be on vacation in Florida.
Starting point is 00:30:35 But, you know, sometimes you got to leave Florida a little early to go to Omaha through the moods, right? We'll see what happens. I wish I could go, but I have a vacation that was booked and paid four months ago. Can't get out of. Yeah, that's hard. I mean, that's difficult, right? I mean, you know, vacation's important.
Starting point is 00:30:50 I'm going on vacation next week for my birthday and you got to get out of time sometime. But what a journey, man, for that team and to be able to do it the way that they did. That's awesome. Wow. That's incredible. I mean, never been a head coach at any level, not at the T-ball level. And gets an opportunity to be a head coach in the SEC. It ain't like, you know, you're becoming a head coach at some mid-major.
Starting point is 00:31:14 You become a head coach on the biggest stage and you do this? I mean, it's just, that's the journey. And it also shows a lot of people think that you've got to check eight different boxes to be the right guy. And the reality is no one knows. Like, it's hard to figure out who the right head coach is in any sport. And I think sometimes if you gamble on someone who maybe has all the intangibles but doesn't necessarily have the resume yet, this is how you end up in this situation. And I think schools need to look at situations like this when they're trying to go out
Starting point is 00:31:49 and get the perfect candidate, the guy who fits every single requirement that they're looking for when they pass up guys like Nick Mingeone because they're going, well, he's never been. been a head coach. So I can't make him a head coach if he doesn't have that experience. But this is proof that if you get the right guy, fellas, and you put him in the right position, a lot of special things can happen. You know, Barnhart did that with Mark Stoops. Mark Stoops had never been a head coach before.
Starting point is 00:32:17 He was just an assistant coach his whole life. Plucked him to be the football coach here. Did the same thing with Minge. Both have really, have really worked and paid out. So that that sound bites, that's the one that's going to resonate with everybody. That's the one we're all going to remember of how emotional and how much. of a journey it really has been for Coach Minge. It's fun, man.
Starting point is 00:32:35 It's fun to watch. Again, as an outsider, it's just cool to watch that hard work pay off and to see someone just enjoy a moment like that. Are y'all following the Danny Hurley stuff, by the way? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Today's Decision Day, right? That's wild, right?
Starting point is 00:32:53 Today, apparently, yeah. Today he's got to make a decision. I guess they wind and dined him in L.A. last week. and now he's got to, I guess, make a choice. My guess is it sounds like they probably gave him the weekend to decide if he wants to coach the Lakers or he wants to stay at Yukon. I think it's an important conversation,
Starting point is 00:33:12 not just because he's one of the premier coaches, the premier coach right now in college basketball. I think it's important because I think there are more and more coaches who are like, we don't necessarily know what's ahead in the college landscape. There are a lot of unknowns. and I think if Hurley leaves for the pros, that'll be one of the factors.
Starting point is 00:33:34 I think everybody's talking about roster, cabs, and paying players and all these things that I'm in favor of. But there's no structure around it yet. You know what I mean? Like no one really knows exactly how this is all going to play out. And I think if Danny Hurley goes to the Lakers and he cites that as one of the reasons, I think that's something for everybody to pay attention to
Starting point is 00:33:55 because I wonder if other coaches will think, think like that and we'll go, you know what? If I have a chance to go pro, considering all the unknowns at this level, maybe I'll do the same thing. But would you go if you were him? Ryan, I'll start with you. Would you go if you were Dan Hurley? Would you go to L.A.?
Starting point is 00:34:13 He just won back-to-back titles at Yukon. I mean, that's big. That's huge. You know, here in Lexington, Miron, we're all just glad that Kentucky did not end up hiring Dan Hurley because now we might be in this situation where Harley's about to leave Kentucky to go to the Lakers. you know, they came after him like that. So I don't know.
Starting point is 00:34:32 I know the glitz and glamour of the Lakers got to be attractive, but I just don't know how he can leave Yukon after back-to-back titles. I think it's a good time. It would be hard. Yeah. You do?
Starting point is 00:34:44 Yeah, I mean, you just gave them two titles. You can look at them like, hey, I'm leaving, but look at those two titles. Look at those shiny titles you just got. You're going to be all right. You're leaving on top. And as you're saying, with so much going around in college, if you can get a pro job and it's the Lakers,
Starting point is 00:34:57 I would make that move and say, you're welcome, Yukon. I'll always be a Husky and won two titles with you, but I want to see what else I can accomplish. See, I value that too, because I think that could be the case, right? I think that could be what he's thinking about right now is how much better does it get?
Starting point is 00:35:16 People are talking about a three-peat, which hasn't happened since John Wood. I don't know that you can win three championships in a row in this landscape because it's so competitive. But that's the pressure he's kind of facing. I don't know if it's pressure, That's what people would want. But when does it stop?
Starting point is 00:35:30 And I think Kentucky has the two examples that if you're Dan Hurley, these are the two people I call. I call Cal and I call Rick Petino, right, for different reasons. I would call Rick Patino because that's the closest we have to this situation, wins in 96, right, loses in 97, goes to the Celtics. And you can't say no to the Celtics. And I think Hurley's in a similar situation. It's not about going to the NBA.
Starting point is 00:35:54 If the Celtics or the Lakers call, you got to take the call and strongly consider what they're offering. And obviously, Patino decided to make the move, right? Whereas Cal, I would call Cal, because I think Cal's a good example of, you know what, if you have a chance to kind of really soak it all in when things are going well, that is the greatest moment of your coaching career. But if you get away from that, if you distance yourself, if you kind of go, into your own world and then things kind of crumble, that's a whole different situation.
Starting point is 00:36:32 You know, I think Cal experienced that. I know people make it sound like whatever the fan base was against him. Cal changed, right? Like, Cal changed dramatically from the guy we saw from 2009 to 2015 and then who he was when he ultimately left the program. And I think if you're Dan Hurley, you've got to go, you're beloved right now. And I don't think that would change him going to the Lakers. Yukon fans will love him forever.
Starting point is 00:36:55 they'll build him a statue even if he leaves today. If you leave seven years from now and you can't, you know, duplicate the same success and maybe the ego gets a little too big, are you in the same situation? So I think Dan Hurley has a lot to consider in terms of what he's going to end up doing in a move that he's going to set up an interesting domino effect
Starting point is 00:37:19 potentially in college basketball. I think they'll hire Kamani Young probably if he leaves, but man that would be a big moment in this sport. You know, we talk about that a lot. What if Cal had taken the Cavalier's job, was it 2015, 2014? Yeah. We would. We would have had a statue of him and named the floor after him and everything else.
Starting point is 00:37:41 But then the longer he stayed, the more that relationship got strained. So I guess if, you know, Harley's looking at it in that aspect, like, well, yeah, this may be my one chance to gleeve while I'm on top right after the glitz and glitz. member of Los Angeles. Yeah, and I thought, and I thought to me, it's one thing, you know, Cal wasn't the first coach to win big and then struggle, right? But to me, to change who you are, I think that to me is when you go, okay, this is, this is creating a disconnection with your faith. I probably, I bet I've been to more Kentucky games as a national reporter than anyone
Starting point is 00:38:19 who doesn't live, you know, within a hundred miles of the city, right? some national guys who I was living the area. But I mean, in 2015 alone, I think I was at 14 to 16 games or something like that. I mean, I was in Lexington or at games on the road or the SC tournament or the NCAA tournament literally all the time, that entire season. And I remember going to a charity softball game that Cal put on, I think it was before that season or after. I don't remember which one. But it was like the Piper, man. It was like watching the president or something,
Starting point is 00:38:56 the way that he was interacting with his fans, the way that he was connecting with the people around him. There are all these random celebrities who were at the game and you could just see the influence that he had. And I remember how accessible he was. And I think that's probably the biggest thing Mark Pope can take away is it wasn't just that Cal was winning big in those early years. He was kind of a coach of the people, right?
Starting point is 00:39:23 Like he was accessible. You could get to him. You could touch him, if you will. And then as the loss is piled up, he kind of stepped back, kind of distance himself a little bit. And that always hurts people in the end. Like there's no value ever. Unless you are just the king of king and you win nonstop.
Starting point is 00:39:43 And maybe you can get away with that. But especially when things go south, you want to put yourself in a position where you have the support of a fan base because you've had. had that connection because you've built up that relationship. And I think Cal got away from that in the end. But if I'm Danny Hurley, I'm like, you know what? Can it get better than this for Danny Hurley? I mean, that's the question for me.
Starting point is 00:40:06 It's like, what can he do in order for this to get even better than it is now, right? Like, how does he at Yukon in this modern era, like how does it improve from here? So if I'm Danny Hurley, man, I don't know. I think it feels like he has to go. but I can also see the value, right, of someone being like, I'm coming back and I turn down the Lakers. They would build a statue for you tomorrow, maybe if you did that, right?
Starting point is 00:40:35 If you said no to the Lakers to come back to U-Kown. But it's going to be interesting to see like what he ends up doing and kind of what he has to say. Do you think that the NBA could tolerate a guy with that emotional delivery? I mean, do you think the NBA, would be okay with him having that demeanor he has on the sideline where he's so just kind of in your face, says what he wants, wears his heart on his sleeve. Do you think that would go well in the NBA or do you think people will get annoyed by it?
Starting point is 00:41:07 There's not much like it out there in the NBA right now. I don't know. I'd be a little skeptical. Also, him potentially being with LeBron James feels like a weird dynamic there because as we know, LeBron has a little influence on his team's coaching always has. So I, I'm As just an outsider who doesn't really care about the Lakers or whatever's going on there, I would be very interested to see Danny Hurley and LeBron in the same organization. I'd be keeping a close eye on that just because I think it would be very interesting side story in the NBA. If you're Danny Hurley, Myron, and in one summer you say no to the Kentucky Wildcats and then you say no to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Starting point is 00:41:43 I mean, that's incredible that you put yourself in that position. Yeah, you would come back even bigger than you ever were, even after winning back-to-back championships. more about this on the other side of this break. Last night, a blown call changed a game. Starting point is 00:43:47 What's up, guys? This is Clifford Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Clifford Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What?
Starting point is 00:44:06 Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, rec, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford Show on the. the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Get up off of that thing, James Brown, the man, James Brown.
Starting point is 00:44:33 Let me tell you all about James Brown. I went to a James Brown concert. He must have been 68, 70 years old. And it was the greatest show I've ever been to. He played for three hours at almost 70 years old, and it was phenomenal. And I was already a fan. but when I saw him get on that stage at that age and dance the way that he did
Starting point is 00:44:54 and moved the way that he did, I became an even bigger fan. I hope a bunch of Kentucky fans are out there right now listening to some James Brown celebrating the college world series trip, the journey to Omaha after the historic moment last night. Drew, I think you've got to read for us, though. You got to read.
Starting point is 00:45:12 I do. BBN, what a great time of year with this nice weather. We're making travel plans. And as we saw yesterday, baseball season is in full, swing. I think we got a caller. We got a caller? We do. Let's go to David. David, how you doing on this Merry Monday? First off, what's something that made you smile, something that made you happy?
Starting point is 00:45:58 I like you James Brown. I'm a proud of it. I see, right? He'll do it to you, right? I'm telling you. Oh, man. Classic. I want to make a comment on MNGO,
Starting point is 00:46:11 and I think you're coming from the same playing field. I am. What a mentor. He showed his heart. He showed his character. He showed what he's made of. And he found out what life is all about.
Starting point is 00:46:25 And I mean, it was moving. I mean, it was really moving. And I'm going to finish. What a witness. What a witness for other coaches. I mean, I just, I, about what he said, because he showed his heart. And what he's made of. And I'll tell you, this will go a long way down the road for Kentucky baseball.
Starting point is 00:46:51 Yeah, I appreciate that call. I mean, I just, I think anybody, you don't have to be a Kentucky fan, you don't have to be even a sports fan. I think to appreciate the idea of someone who it wasn't handed to him, right? Like it wasn't like, you know, he was the son of some legendary coach and he's 30 years old and he's got his first job. And, you know, I mean, it wasn't that. It was a guy who literally had to be. to work his way up from the beginning. Never been a head coach, not even a T-ball head coach.
Starting point is 00:47:28 For those that don't know, here is his coaching career. Florida golf coast, he was an assistant in 2002. 0305, Embry Riddle, he was an assistant where he played in the 90s. 0-6-07, Kentucky, he was an assistant. 08, Western Carolina, he was an assistant. Then at Mississippi State, he was an assistant from 09 to 2016. And then in 2017, he gets the job. From 2002 to 2016, he was an assistant coach.
Starting point is 00:47:56 I cannot tell you how many people want to be at the top in any business, right? They want to do it right away. And I think if Nick Mnjion gets that a decade ago, does it feel the same? Maybe. But I think what I can appreciate is him soaking in all the emotions because he understood the journey and he was kind of just going through that in his mind. You could see it going like, what an awesome. moment. For you all, how much does that add to it, knowing that this wasn't something that
Starting point is 00:48:27 happened right away? He didn't get here and get to this moment, that it took him nearly a decade to reach this point. He kind of touched on a little bit during the interview last night where he said, we had to, we set down as coaches and had to totally change our approach and philosophy to what we want to do to play in this ballpark. And so they did. They went out and got all these fifth year seniors and got all these guys in the transfer portal. But he picked the right personalities to match each other. And he's found a way for them to all buy into it because, you know, this is an old veteran team. These guys are tough, hard-nosed baseball players.
Starting point is 00:49:03 But yet they found a way to play together. They play aggressive. They put pressure on the other team the whole game. So his change in philosophy, I think, is the main reason that they've had this success the last two years. And they missed the tournament. I forgot the exact year. A few years ago, I think it was kind of a decision. And they were just on the wrong end, went the wrong way on the NCAA's eyes.
Starting point is 00:49:20 and he said in that moment, he decided we're going to be the aggressor in everything we do. We're not leaving up to someone else. We're going to be the one to strike first. And that's why they are constantly stealing. They're going against traditional baseball about at every turn. But it's also the reason why they're heading to Omaha is the way they play. So it just makes them so much more fun to watch.
Starting point is 00:49:39 And not just Minge Jones climb. I mean, Kentucky baseball, not a whole lot of history and tradition. Sharing the SEC this year, that was the second time ever. You know, first time winning the Super. So it's cool to be in a conference where it's, almost impossible to climb up the SEC. Everyone's so good. But we got the Kentucky Wildcats
Starting point is 00:49:54 representing Omaha this year after a long time coming. And I think you hit an important point, Drew, right? Because in order to steal, if you're McCarthy, in order for you to be able to go off instinct, that's not just you. That's you knowing that you're playing for a leader who's cool with that, right?
Starting point is 00:50:13 Yeah. That's you like being coached to, if you got to go for it. And just sort of that, that freedom, you're playing with, and you can see that. Like, what I appreciated about watching that run was it looked like all those guys were having more fun than anybody else. You know, whoever they were playing, you could see how tense.
Starting point is 00:50:32 Even Oregon State looked at times and some of the other teams they played. But it was cool to watch a team almost have that sand lot, little league vibe a little bit. Sure. Where you're just seeing them soak in the moment and remembering that baseball is supposed to be fun. And when you win big, it's even more fun. We'll be back after this. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
