Now here's Matt Jones.
Happy Wednesday from my basement in Atlanta with Ryan, Drew, and Mario in Lexington,
and Shannon and Louisville.
I'm Tom Hart sitting in, having some fun here on KSR.
We've got plenty to talk about today.
I mean, we've got a million things going on.
It's Drew's birthday.
Yay!
Omaha, Patrick Patterson's house got robbed.
Joey Chestnut's been banned.
We got a million things.
But the Zoom pops up and Ryan and I start making like gestures to each other.
And we're laughing.
And Mario, by the way, Ryan was staring at us like,
these dudes are idiots.
number one, which I don't blame him.
But my first, my first reaction when I see you, Ryan, did you get a haircut?
Oh, yeah.
Don't I look?
I look a lot more handsome, dapper, more educated, maybe even a little taller.
Drew, I did not think he could be more handsome, but he got it tightened up a little bit.
This is a whole lot of handsome sitting next to me.
It is.
It's an honor to every morning in the summer.
This is kind of the first person I see and interact with every day, and it sets the tone for
the day, but today that he's really glowing.
makes the ladies very Thursday, very thirsty.
Here we go.
Tomorrow's Thursday.
What's it going rate for a Ryan Lemon haircut these days?
Well, when we talked about this, I think, with you the other day.
I've gone to the same gal who cut my hair for like 25 years, Michelle Collins, and I can still get a haircut.
She'll only charge me $13.
But I give her a $7 tip.
I give her $20.
I mean, that's still, that's pretty cheap.
But that's all costs.
Yeah, we did talk about it when we showed the, we showed the, we showed,
the bushes.
I've got another picture for the second hour.
It's not going to be phallic.
I promise you.
It's going to be a little bit more family friend.
Drew, it is your big day, man.
What are you excited about?
I'm excited to talk to Tom Hart.
As I just said, I'm always excited to see Ryan Lemon.
I don't have any big plans for the day.
Going to go to a little dinner with my family tonight.
Next week we're vacationing, so I'm kind of not going too hard today looking forward
to that.
But, you know, this is day one.
of my 40th year. I'm 39 today.
So it's kind of one of those scary birthdays.
I don't like that number that's coming up next June.
But here we are. I appreciate the birthday shout-out.
Tom, do you realize that when you first started KSR, you were Mario's age?
Oh, yeah.
Look at that. And now you're 39.
Yeah, I met Matt on my birthday. I was at two keys.
Matt remembers it. I don't remember all of it.
But yeah, times have changed just a little bit.
Well, happy birthday.
Thank you very much.
That's big. I mean, that's big. You get to a certain age, and I'll explain this to you guys. Ryan's the oldest, I think. But what I've learned is like I've gotten to a point where I feel older, like almost on a weekly basis. Like something else pops up. And I'm like, man. But there's no sense of feeling sorry for yourself because it's only going to get worse. Right. So just ignore it. Like unless you get on HCH or some sort of, you know, revitalizing drug, you're only going to get older if you're lucky. I've got to go to.
a funeral tomorrow. Like you're lucky to get older. Now, my uncle was 90, so that's a whole
different story. But at this point, what do you ask for for your 39th birthday?
I mean, people have been asking me for weeks, and I have no answer. I don't know. I don't need
things. Hoping to get around to golfing with my dad at some point. That'll be fun. Like I said,
going to dinner, you know, you get older. You don't need the toys and the big events. I'm just
looking to hang out a little bit. I will say one thing with getting older. There's something about
boards. It's not even this birthday, but little things like younger fans of Kentucky on our message
board last week. It was Jamal McGlore's birthday, and I said, happy birthday, Jamal McGlore, champion
1998. You love Jamal McGlore. Matt loves Jamal McGlore. So I wrote, everyone leave your favorite
Jamal McGlore memory today, and over half the responses where we don't remember Jamal McGlore.
And then there's like one person that's like, I barely remember John Wall. And it's those things
that hurt me much more than today's date or my age. It's kind of sports, I don't.
I think puts it into perspective a lot when you're meeting younger people.
When they don't even remember these fond memories you think were just a few years ago.
No, the lifespan of players, even great players is like a blip on the radar.
Shannon, do you agree with Drew that you reach a certain age?
You really don't ask for stuff or need stuff because I have a feeling you'd have a contrary opinion on this.
Well, I mean, I always like, you know, presence anytime.
You want to give me a gift?
I'm fine with that.
My problem is I'm born on December 21st.
So I always get the, hey, buddy, here's your gift.
Oh, by the way, that's also your Christmas gift type thing.
So I always got kind of screwed when it came to getting like a birthday gift.
But, you know, as I get older, I like just experiences, I think, more than gifts.
Oh, just very nickmengi-owned of you.
Yeah, just experiences, just hanging out with friends, you know.
And you get to a certain age, too, you don't even want to talk about celebrating another birthday, right?
When you hit 40, don't remind me that I've got another birthday coming up.
Yeah, I'm with you.
What I do most of the time, whether it's like Christmas, maybe Father's Day, birthday,
is I'll be like, hey, I bought a new pair of shoes.
Like whether you want to wrap it or not, like that, don't buy me anything.
Like I went and bought something for me, so we're good.
Is that a fair way to do it, Ryan, like at a certain age?
Yeah.
I think we're going to be honest.
I think when we get a little older in my age, when it's your birthday, you want somebody
a cookie a meal, you want a nap, and you want a little private, quiet sneak around, you know,
about Chick-a-Pou-Pow-Powl-Time, maybe that night. That's all that's all that I want.
That's all, that's all, man, once, that's it. You give me that, and I'm a happy, I'm a happy man.
Quiet sneak around brown chickabom-bobout. Yeah. Remember Tom earlier when you said he's the
oldest guy on the show? You said that just a few minutes ago? He's the least mature.
But that's what we want. You know, we're happy. You know, I'm going to hold you guys to task.
year. You know what would be a great birthday, Father's Day present, a trip to Omaha. I cannot believe. I cannot believe that KSR is not going to the College World Series. I think the first time I met Matt was in Omaha at the College World Series. Like, I don't know how many years ago. The first time we kind of hung out. And he knows how great an event it is. It is incredible. I've been to the Super Bowl. I've been to the Masters. I've been to the Rose Bowl. I've been to Final Fours. I've been to World Series.
the college world series is the absolute best, and I'll tell you why.
It is the most accessible national championship that you can hope for.
I mean, like, I'm sure you could go to the cross-country national championship
and probably get a steal on a ticket, right?
But in terms of having an event that you want to be at, you get a day game,
you go drink in the morning and hang out and tailgate if you want,
go get a stake at night.
You get a night game, maybe you go play golf with your buddies,
or you go across the river to the casino,
know, whatever it is, but it is affordable.
It is, I'll put an asterisk in front of this one.
It's somewhat convenient.
I mean, Omaha is in the middle of the country.
So, yeah, it's like a 10, 12-hour drive from many of the listeners today.
You can do it as cheap as you want.
You can do it as highbrow as you want, spend as much money.
You can get a motel 6 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and then drive over.
I'm sure somebody is going to be having a huge tailgate.
But I stirred the Hornets Nest yesterday.
From a quote I got from a national baseball rider, like three days before,
when out our little group text that we have with a bunch of baseball,
college baseball guys, I said, guys, I think Big Blue Nation is going to take over Omaha.
And he immediately fired back, and he's like, no way, they're not baseball fans.
They're not going to show up.
Ryan, tell me why he's wrong.
He obviously doesn't know what Big Blue Nation is all about, man.
When we're a bowl game, we're full.
We're going to that.
If it's an NCAA
tournament basketball game,
we're going to that.
There will be a huge,
big blue wave
row into Omaha
for the college baseball
World Series.
And if he thinks
this community is not
baseball fans,
he just doesn't know us.
He doesn't know Lexington.
He doesn't know UK baseball.
There will be as big a crowd
of Kentucky fans as any other
fan base there in Omaha.
I guarantee it.
I got to make a bet with him
just so I can take advantage of this.
Drew,
I know you got vacation coming up
and you got a birthday.
Have you given consideration,
Have you shared where you're going on vacation, first of all?
I don't want to give too much of your personal information.
I haven't given the precise location, but I am going to South Florida.
You go to South Florida?
Do a little beach time?
Have you thought about flipping, you know, South Beach for Omaha?
Have you thought it given, like they're basically one in the same?
The Missouri River goes right by.
There's sand.
There's water.
There's sun.
I have thought about it.
In fact, I and a friend of mine who is in another part of the country.
a friend of mine in another part of the country who all can't go this first weekend.
We've all said if Kentucky is in that championship, we're all meeting there.
So I'm not a no on Omaha.
I just need Kentucky to win a few games before I can get there because I'm in an airport
coming back from Miami the Saturday of the championship series.
It's nothing to go up to that gate and call in Omaha, if you will, and say that
Lexington, Kentucky flight, I would rather that one go to Nebraska.
and I'm there easily.
Might be wearing some swim trunks and a tank top.
Might need someone to bring me a pink hat and UK gear.
But if they're in that final game,
I might be walking into Rockos
and trying to help with that shot chart if we're still in it.
Yeah, I will say, and I brought this up on the other day,
LSU destroyed the Jellos'O last year.
Yeah.
Because they had a couple millionaire donors,
this guy who runs at a chicken shop,
was just buying thousands and thousands of
dollars of jealous shots and passing them around the entire bar.
I'm not saying it's rigged, but you're not just going to do it by like everybody going up
and ordering shots for their table.
Like it's got to be a coordinated NIL type deal where somebody is sponsoring the whole thing.
That would be the secret.
I've made up a scenario in my head where me and my buddies, we land on that Saturday night.
We assume Joe Kraft is there.
We find Joe and we say, Joe, we need you.
We're going to run a quick errand.
you won't be there long.
It just need you to stop by and make a quick contribution to this cause we have.
I've created that scenario in my head, and I hope we get to that point.
That's a no-brainer.
It could be Kelly.
Like, hey, bring your credit card.
Yeah, Kelly.
Just pop in.
It's going to take a second.
Let them run the card, give them a number, and jealous shots for everything.
Or I'll take the card.
You don't have to leave the hotel.
Give me the card.
I'll get this done and bring it back to you, hopefully, at some point.
But I would love for that situation to pop up.
I can see that happening.
It is such a cool experience.
Like it's, I don't want to say it's not stressful because if your team's there,
you want your team to win.
And so like every pitch can be sitting on pins and needles, I'm sure.
But it's so relaxed.
And there's a little league tournament that's going on with thousands of kids, you know,
just down the road.
And they all come to the games and sit in the bleachers.
And dudes are carrying around cups of beer.
And there's a bar right across from right field and another bar behind on plate,
and another one at the third base line.
And you go, if you don't like beer, that's fine.
Go get a zestos and have a, have a, you know, a swirly ice cream cone or whatever it might be.
It's just, it is an incredible experience.
And I imagine I was there when Michigan was there.
I've been there when LSU was there.
I've been there when Florida State was there.
I've seen like big schools have an impact on Omaha.
And to see the community and the camaraderie between the fans, whether you know them or not,
just walking down the street and everybody.
dressed in blue, man, it's going to be
really cool. I'm so happy
for the cats and for that team.
I don't know what I'm doing, by the way,
when I host this show. I know we've got to, we've got
a guess at the bottom of the hour. Do we have a break
before we have a guest on? Do we need to go to break, Shannon?
We can, yeah, if you want to.
Your show, you do whatever you want.
I mean, I'm going to drive it straight off the clip.
I have, it's driving Miss Daisy. I don't know what I'm
doing here. I'm just motoring along.
Ryan, I can't believe you're not going.
Well, like Drew, the things have opened up where if they can get past the first two games,
I think there's a chance we can all get ready to go over there.
I might even be able to go Monday.
I can't go Saturday in the first game.
But Monday's a strong possibility I can go.
So you driving all the way there and then coming right back?
Yeah, driving, going to the game.
10-hour drive, one night there, and then 10 hours right back.
I love it.
How many times we've been to Omaha?
Z-Row.
You got to do it.
Got to do it.
I drove straight to Newark when we played Ohio State.
I got off my couch, drove to New Jersey,
because someone gave me a ticket at the last minute,
and then I drove back.
Sometimes you got to drive long distances on short notice to support the cats.
I cannot wait.
All right, we're going to cover a little bit about the games.
I just had NC State.
I had their super regional against Athens.
I'll give you a scattering report on those guys.
Chris Burke is going to be on.
Forgive him, he played at Tennessee,
but he covers college baseball like nobody else.
He's going to give us a rundown of the college World Series field,
what he thinks about Kentucky.
I have plenty more to talk about.
And it's Drew's birthday.
Can we use the text line?
Oh, it's the A-Vision Glass text machine
and the numbers 502-735-3680.
I've got it right here in my hands.
Here's what I want on the text line.
I want your worst birthday gift you've ever gotten.
Oh, that's a good one.
Okay, we'll be back.

If you're going to look at stats and numbers,

It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up.

It's true's birthday today, and we're celebrating all day long.
It's really going to be like a two-week celebration
because he's going to get to Omaha for the national championship in like, I don't know,
10 days, a week and a half, something like that and just parties his brains out.
Hey, Ryan, do you know what the stricand effect is?
I've heard of this.
I can't think of what it is right now, but I've heard of it.
Drew, you probably know, right?
No, I'm with Ryan.
It sounds familiar, but I can't give you the definition.
The stricant effect is when you try to suppress some information
and in the effort to do so, it flushes it out even wider.
So like 20 years ago, there was a picture of the Malibu Coast taken to
document coastal erosion and this huge mansion near the edge of this cliff as it is eroded it turns out
that the mansion was Barbara Streisans. Nobody knew it wasn't identified whatever, but she flipped out
and her lawyers tried to suppress the photograph and said, you can't use that. That's our private
residence. But all it did was bring more attention to it. All it did was cause people to search
where's Barbara Streisand's home. And then they saw it. And then instead of like a few people seeing it,
and nobody knowing it was her house,
millions of people saw it.
So it completely backfired on her.
So Joey Chestnut has been banned
from Nathan's hot dog eating contest.
He got banned because his group called Major League Eating
is mad because he is sponsoring now
like a near meat or whatever you call those things,
like some sort of vegan hot dog.
Well, all they're doing by banning him
is causing people to go, oh, I didn't know Joey Chestnut was sponsoring this other company.
I wonder who it is.
I wonder if those are any good.
I mean, Drew, don't you think this is a terrible idea, A, for bringing more attention to the fact that Joey Chestnut has a sponsorship,
and B, for banning the guy who makes your event watchable.
He's the best ever.
Oh, this is crazy.
I even said yesterday that they didn't kick him out of the Nathan's contest.
Nathan's removed itself from the Joey Chestnut contest.
I mean, that is his day on July 4th.
We tune in to watch him do things no other human can do.
It is superhuman feats.
And they just took out their MVP, their star.
Name another competitive eater.
Okay, Kobayashi, he hadn't done it in forever.
You don't get him.
Name one that would have been, that will be in the field this year.
Don't know.
You don't know because that is Joey Chestnut's event.
And like said, they hurt themselves and just gave more attention to his brand
and what he's promoting that they were already upset with in the first place.
He was at the Ole Miss Spring game.
I was down there.
They had a hot dog eating contest during the spring game.
I was like right next to him as he's shoving hot dogs in his mouth.
It is it is the most disgusting thing you could be close to that is televised.
I mean, I was I was absolutely, absolutely disgusting.
Ryan, can you think of another sport that took its star and said,
nah, you know what, we're pretty good, we don't need you, we're fine, beat it.
It's crazy, like Drew said, the only reason you know anything about competitive eating is because
Joey Chestnut and what he does and the craziness.
By the way, I thought that was really cool at the Ole Miss Spring game.
But like if you're asking me to think of somebody else, I mean, of course, everybody on ESPN is going crazy
because Caitlin Clark got left off the United States Olympic team.
I mean, I can't think of another one where a superstar is left out.
of the competition other than that off top of my head.
What about when Michael Jordan went to minor league baseball?
Yeah.
Are you saying Joey Chestnut should go play baseball?
Yeah.
We're going to minor league eating.
Birmingham parents.
If you're Joey Chestnut, why didn't you start your own eating league?
How hard could it be to start a major league eating league?
Impossible foods or the brand or whatever that's gotten in
removed from this. They should schedule one at the exact same time, stream it or whatever, and just
try to get as much as they can from this. Go head to head. Have Joey eating his vegetable hot
dogs or whatever he's doing? That's the answer. These impossible dogs have their own competition
with Joey Chestnut as a competition. Everybody's going to watch it and not watch the other one.
Shannon, have you ever had, have you ever tried impossible meat? Actually, I think I have. My girlfriend's
really into this type of stuff. I don't like it. But I
I was like, I'm curious, I'll try it.
I mean...
Wait, hold on. Hold on.
You said, I think I have.
Was she trying to hide it from you?
You have no idea the deception that goes on at my house at dinner time.
You know, like I think that I'm eating French fries, but those are actually carrot french fries.
This type of thing that I'm talking about with the impossible burgers.
I think I'm eating, you know, beef.
And what is it?
It's actually vegetable beef.
So this happens all the time to me.
I'm not...
Sometimes she slides it by.
me and I don't realize it, but there's other times I'm going,
something's a little off here.
What's up with this?
I go, I look at the package.
It's not real beef.
I think Shannon's trying to go with the stricand effect here.
I think he does it himself so he can fit into the Spider-Man costume that he's going to wear
tonight.
Oh, listen, Tom, we made sure it's an extra, extra small Spider-Man costume for Shannon tonight.
Yes, I can't wait to see him in.
It's worth coming here to see Shannon in the costume tonight.
Well, why don't you talk about it? What we got going on tonight? It's Marvel trivia. It's Marvel trivia. I hope somebody has already written my questions for me. That way, there's no effort on my part. I just have to look good in that Spider-Man costume. But it starts at 7 o'clock. And how does this work, Ryan? I mean, you guys do trivia all the time at the bar. Is it first come first served? Do they need to reserve a table? Or how does it work? There have been people calling for reservations. They are taking reservations, but you can come here as well. I'm not expecting it, you know, to be
where rather people out in the street, you know,
you still come and get a table.
Wait a minute.
You're telling me I'm putting on a costume
and we're not expecting people to be knocking down the door
to try to come in and hang out with me.
Is that what you're saying?
Are you saying I'm not popular enough?
I stand corrected.
Yes, you probably need to call for reservations
because it's going to be packed here tonight.
Thank you.
See Shannon in a little Spider-Man outfit.
What if I called to make a reservation
and I said my name was Hermione?
How would you spell that?
It's Hermione.
You said it wrong.
It's Hermione.
I can't wait for you to screw something up tonight.
Don't worry, I will.
You just get attacked by the Marvel.
I don't know.
You got to help me out here.
Are the Harry Potter nerds and the comic book nerds?
Are they like on the same level of seriousness?
Like the Harry Potter nerds, you don't want to mess with them.
You screw one thing up.
This is pronounced something.
They're ready to, you know, cut your throat.
But like are comic nerds like that into it on the same level of Harry Potter fans?
I don't know.
Drew, I feel like they could be.
Like I feel like the ultras, like the ones that are really into it are just and that are like, oh, we've got to show up.
Maybe we've never been to KS Bar before, but we've got to show up for trivia.
I feel like they are, they are just as dialed in Drew.
I agree.
I think he's much worse off.
Harry Potter, I assume's a little younger.
They have these brooms.
They think they can ride on.
Not real.
Marvel, he might catch a Thorhammer in the back of the head if he's not asking these questions the way they want them asked.
I don't know what other Marvel weapons there are,
but I would keep my head on a swivel tonight
in case you screw up.
Are people allowed to bring a Thorhammer in?
Absolutely.
I'm encouraged.
Yeah, we want people to come dressed in costume
to join Shannon tonight for all the Marvel comic trivia.
Maybe a rival Spider-Man.
We could see who looks better.
We could do the baseball.
Yeah, the meme, exactly.
Yeah, the baseball uses.
It'd be great.
Oh, I can't wait.
That's going to be awesome.
All right, we're going to hear from Chris Burke.
When we come back at the bottom of the aisle,
we're going to get his take on this college world series field.
It is all SEC and SEC.
Nobody else qualified.
Nobody else is invited.
Isn't that crazy?
It's just a two-party part.
It's nuts.
I don't think it's great for college baseball.
That's a whole other conversation.
It'd be like if I had a radio show, we could talk about it.
I don't know.
KSR continues right after this.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you
hear on earth.
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show,
I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff,
like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office, blue of 42.
Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her.
What?
Hey, Ms. Parker.
Listen to the Clifford show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
What's up, fam, this Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves,
I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything,
he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball.
Like, after you go through a training camp with that, I said,
you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app,

T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay.
Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
I'm hard sitting in for Matt Jones today. I think a lot of Wednesdays over the course this summer.
We got Drew and Ryan and Mario and Lexington. Shannon's in Louisville. The special guest today is also in Louisville. He's Chris Burke.
Burkey, you're a regular on Basilio show. You graduated from Tennessee. Even though you live in
and Louisville, do you feel like you're crossing over the dark side right now?
I think the dark side's probably a little hyperbole,
but I do feel like I'm on a road trip here.
I'm definitely playing as a visiting team.
So I always liked hitting lead off on the road, so I'm enjoying this.
Let's go.
All right, that's great.
Hey, listen, I'm trying to explain to these guys before we dial into like the X's and O's,
why Omaha is such a great trip, whether you're going with your family or just with your boys
or baseball die hard, or you just want to go have a couple of cold beers.
You've been going there for since when 19?
I mean, you played in it, but you've been covering it since 18 or 19?
No.
The first year, I was there as a broadcaster with 15 and then calling games since 17, I think.
17.
Okay.
What is it about Omaha?
Like, if you were just trying to sell somebody on the idea that makes it a great event,
for a fan.
Let's kind of take the baseball out of it.
What is it?
Well, it's eight different fan bases.
So I think that makes it a blast.
You get the experience, you know, the bigness of the event with people from all different
stretches of the country.
This year it's a little more regionalized than normal.
But I do think that part makes it fun and unique.
The College World Series, it's a big league environment from a grand.
stage standpoint with college kids. So you get the newness and aweness of young athletes
experiencing the grandest stage. Most of them will ever play on. So I think that's really
cool. And then I just think the city of Omaha, the fact that it's in the same place every year,
you know, different but similar in Augusta. Like you get to know it, you fall in love with it.
The city really opens their arms to everybody. And the way they've developed downtown, with all
the hotels and all the restaurants and all the nightlife.
Like everybody, especially from the Kentucky fan base that's reached out to me as first
time travelers is like, you know, where should I stay?
And I just anywhere downtown, you have to stay downtown.
Because once you're downtown, all you got to do is walk out your hotel door and the world
is your oyster.
So it's very unique in that regard.
And it's a must trip for anybody that loves big sporting events.
you put it really well you explain it better than i did um all right give us give us the odds
that would be a first tom that would be you nailed it um tennessee is the number one national seed
they've got florida state to start things off like if you had to pick two favorites to make it
to the finals right now who would they be and why um you know i think at the risk of sounding cliche it would
be tennessee and kentucky i mean they're number one and number two seeds for
reason. They're both playing at a very high level in the postseason. You know, Kentucky, obviously
undefeated. Tennessee had the one hiccup against an Evansville team that just, you know, could absolutely
mash. But, you know, I just think on paper it's those two teams for two different reasons. I think
Tennessee's, the bigness of the ballpark and the tendency for the wind to blow in is certainly
not advantageous for Tennessee. But people forget, it's a very good defense, especially a very
good outfield descent. And it's the number three ERA in the country. So even though they probably
won't hit seven home runs like they did in game three of the Super Regional, their power is not
flukish. If you look at, you know, heck, Kentucky fans saw how many home runs they hit in that series.
So it's an offense that is certainly capable of hitting the ball out of any ballpark. But it's a
more complete team than I think people give them credit for. And then from Kentucky standpoint,
and I'm just excited about the brand of ball they play.
I think their comp in this event is probably Virginia,
as far as a offense that I don't think is concerned at all about the offensive environment
and whether the ball is getting out of the ballpark or not.
I think from that standpoint, Kentucky's offense has a chance to shine.
Now, I was very concerned about Kentucky's bullpen down the stretch of the season
and into Hoover, but, man, have they pitched fantastic?
in the postseason.
So maybe those
struggles are behind them. And if they
get the pitching that they've had the last new weekend,
Kentucky's going to be a very
tough out in this deal.
What about the style of play? Like, how does that
fit for Kentucky
in that ballpark?
Yeah, I just, I think, again,
I think they're hitters, you know,
Kentucky Proud Park is already,
I think dimensions-wise,
it's almost identical
to Charles Schwab.
field.
So, and if you talk to Minge, that was part of the design of why they did that way, and especially
early in the year, Kentucky, like if you look at Kentucky's home runs, they were a top five
home run hitting team in SEC play, but not overall for the season.
I think part of that is just, you know, when it's cold and windy early, that ballpark plays
really big.
And so I don't think it's an offense that is spooked if they show up one day and the wind's
blown in 20 miles an hour because they take hit by pitches, because they steal bases, because
they Bunt for hit because they sack Bunt up and down the lineup.
And if you look at it, they led the league in doubles.
So it's an offense that can slug but doesn't necessarily rely on home runs.
Chris, hey, this Ryan Lemon.
We know you're a Tennessee guy, but you're from St. X and Kentucky's first baseman,
St. X guy.
And, you know, Ryan Nicholson has had this unbelievable year,
but this is where Kentucky's taking such advantage of the transfer portal.
You know, there's shortstop from Incarnate Word.
You know, Ryan Nicholson transferred from Cincinnati.
I mean, they got all these guys where the transfer portal,
this is the good part of the transfer portal.
When you see these guys like Ryan Nicholson getting a chance to play on a big stage
that he probably wouldn't have got last year at Cincinnati.
Yeah, I mean, first of all, my man, Ryan Nicholson, like, such a cool story.
My dad called me, I don't know, I guess it was probably six years ago now
and said Ryan Nicholson's senior year, I believe, him and a kid by name of Cam Scheler
both went to Cincinnati, and then they had a shortstop by the name of Trey Sweeney that ended up being a first round picked by the Yankees and now in AAA with the Dodgers and ended up going to eastern Illinois or southern Illinois, some small school.
They had three kids that my dad really loved that did not get Power Five offers.
And I remember specifically my dad liked Nicholson the best.
So he and I have gotten a kick out of watching Nicholson have such a great season.
And you're right.
The transfer portal is a huge part of Kentucky store.
I mean, Poozer, their ACE is from college of Charleston and Cam O'Brien.
One of their best relievers is, I want to say Boston College, or he's a portal guy.
Then you look at their lineup, third base, shortstop, first base, left field, and centerfield, I believe, are all transfer players.
So Nick Mangeone has killed the portal, and I think specifically the addition of Nicholson,
because Nicholson really represents how well they played in the SEC this year.
He's got whatever.
He's got 20 home runs.
I think 17 or 16 of them were in SEC games.
So they would not be where they are without Ryan Nicholson.
Hey, Bergen, before you let you go.
Oh, go ahead, Drew here.
Got one more question.
Chris, you had a lot of success in baseball.
Got a pretty famous walk off in the majors, had several years there.
But just looking back, how important is just that memory of making it to Omaha and being with your college?
guys and just that experience looking back and how much will Kentucky's players do you think they'll
remember it whatever happens there yeah I think there's two parts to your to your question that are
important number one you know the college world series really is the pinnacle of our sport and so
once you you don't realize it like a lot of things I'm sure you guys can relate to there's a lot of
things that happen when you're 20 22 years old that you don't appreciate but certainly the
the achievement of getting there as a team is something that will carry these men forever.
Kentucky, the university, you know, does such a great job of celebrating their legends.
And this is a team that will get called back 10-year reunion, 20-year reunion.
You know, they'll be able to celebrate this so much as their life unfolds.
And again, most of these kids will never play in the big league.
So, you know, these pictures will hang in their offices.
These stories will be told forever.
And so from that perspective, it's really cool.
I also am super excited for the Kentucky fan base as a whole because, you know, for me,
like the watching new fan base has fallen in love with the sport is one of my favorite things about doing what I do.
And so Tennessee has definitely done that over the last five years.
And to see the Kentucky fan base get to experience the modern college baseball game,
the journey of a great regular season
and then now culminating
college world series
just a joy, especially for a kid who grew up
in the great state of Kentucky.
So for that, I'm excited.
But lastly, I think the challenge for a team
that makes it either for the first time in a while
or the first time ever
is to actually lock in
and remember you're playing for a national championship.
And so from that standpoint,
I'm very curious to see how Kentucky performs
because, you know, it's easy to get bright-eyed
and maybe get away from the focus of, you know, each pitch and each abat because there are so many new demands, and it is such a big event.
Berkey, before we let you go, give me one team outside of those two that has the ability to win the whole thing.
I think Virginia is very scary.
I love their offense.
This is Virginia's third time in the last four years.
they're pitching almost reminds me of when they won it all in 15
where it's like they really only have five guys,
but their five guys are like on a heater
and really pitching with a lot of confidence.
And I just have seen the way Brian O'Connor manages his offense
in the College World Series.
Like they have no problem playing whatever style of play
the circumstances and the weather dictate.
So I would say Virginia to me is a team outside of those top two that I have circled to win the whole thing.
Dude, thanks for coming on.
I really appreciate it.
I know you're going to have a blast up there.
Can't wait to watch.
My pleasure.
I appreciate the opportunity.
Thanks for inviting me on the road.
Appreciate it.
That's Chris Burke.
He'll be calling the College World Series from Friday all the way through to the very end
in the national championship.
Now, Berkey's a volunteer, and he played at Tennessee.
Yes, he did.
And he hurt Drew's Braves with a walk-off home run in the 18th inning against Joey Devine.
So he's got a couple of marks against him.
But he is an awesome dude and one of my dearest friends.
And I want him to feel the power.
Here's my idea for the day.
I want him to feel the power of this show.
So, like, if you know him, because he lives in Louisville,
there's a lot of people listening right now that know him, send him a text.
Be like, bro, that was great.
Love having you on the show.
Or tweet him.
Hey, dude, that was great.
Love having you on the show.
Because he thinks Basilio's show is bigger than this one.
So I just, I think it would be nice.
Okay.
I think it be nice to give him a little reminder.
You know what I mean?
Like, what is he on Twitter?
Is it at Chris Burke O2?
Is that him?
We got to find him.
Yeah, we've definitely got to.
Yes, that is him.
At Chris Burke O2?
Correct.
I think, I also think,
It would be really, like if you, there are plenty of people now that have played golf with Chris Burke in Louisville that know him from Louisville, know his family. There are plenty of people listening to have his phone number. Just, just shoot him a text. You know, hey dude, that was great. I think that'd be a lotful. We got one more break, Shannon, in the hour. We take it now or later?
Let's take it right now. And we got a lot to talk about when we return. Jerry West has passed away.
The logo. He did it on Drew's birthday. We'll talk about that.
that. Kentucky Sports Radio continues after this.

We continue to celebrate Drew's birthday, an epic day.
We're going to make it.
I don't know if you guys have notices, but like 20-year-olds now, 30-year-olds,
they don't just have a birthday.
They have a birthday week.
Yes.
I feel like that's a little like, look at me selfish.
and we never had a birthday week.
But that being said,
Drew deserves it.
And I feel like this vacation is going to be a birthday week for you.
Is that what I'm,
it was what I'm sensing accurate?
Yes.
My wife always makes fun of me because we just,
our schedules work out.
We always vacation around my birthday,
and she always makes fun of it that it's the week of my birthday
and my birthday trip.
So you're not helping my argument.
But, yeah, that's what we have ahead.
And I'm going to make the most of it.
And as I said earlier,
I hope I just ride.

Today, in your honor.
All day, KS. Bar and Grill.
You're going to make me have a beer before noon.

You got to say, I want the Drew Franklin Birthday Special.
Craft beer pints only $450.
Be careful saying that around town.
Say it here, but you don't know what you'll get.
Saying that.
Well, shout out to KS. Bar.
I appreciate it.
I might have to partake of the first one.
Where's the worst place you could use that line?
Like if you walk to the front desk of X establishment,
what is the word?
Where in Lexington do you not want to say that?
Oh, it depends who's working at Tenroof.
They might pull something out of the back.
I don't know.
Yeah.
What about the massage parlor?
No, no, none of that activity.
None of that activity.
Got a few favorite spots around town, though,
that might provide something.
you were to say that you're quick to the night jerry west passed away guys he was 86 years old
he was the one to built the lakers and the 10 titles in the in the 80s and 2000s then he was an
advisor to golden states run but he was also an incredible player captain of the u.s.
Olympic team in 1960 uh 14 time all star 12 time all NBA five time all defensive team and the logo
that's on every goal is Jerry West.
Ryan, what do you think of first?
Like, that is a storied career as a player and an executive.
What do you think of first when you hear Jerry West's name?
Well, when he was a player, that was just, that was a little before my time.
You know, I was still a little guy.
So I don't really remember him as a player.
So my memory of him is just seeing the, the replay highlights,
and him wearing a wristband and a wristband and a real.
really good player. But then the main memory, though, was him putting, like you said, putting that
Lakers team together as the man that kind of made that dynasty for real was Jerry West, putting all
the pieces together. Showtime Lakers, Drew, may have been one of the most fun teams ever, ever put
together. Like between the glitz and glamour of Hollywood and Magic Johnson and the NBA was just like
on such a rocket ship rise at that time,
I feel like that was,
you can put them on the Mount Rushmore,
most exciting teams.
Of course,
and like I guess most of us on here and listening,
I don't remember Jerry West,
the player.
I know he went to the final several times,
all of his accomplishments,
but I think of him more of the GM as the Lakers
or the best player out of West Virginia.
But I think the HBO show,
and part of me struggles with how much that was exaggerated
and how much wasn't,
Because part of it is like Jerry West didn't want Magic Johnson,
but then he drafted Magic Johnson and ended up obviously one of the best Lakers of all time.
And what was he, the GM for like 20 years?
So you think of all those teams that was a part of it.
But that HBO show is where I've learned a lot of my Jerry West knowledge,
and I'm just hoping it's all accurate or close to it at least.
He didn't want to draft Magic.
That was a storyline in there.
Yeah.
Sidney Moncrief, I think, was Jerry West's pick.
He didn't see a 6-8, 6-9 point guard working out in the NBA.
There's some kind of legendary story, Tom, and I always need like Oscar Combs or somebody.
When Jerry Webb's was being recruited, like, Adolf Rupp was like, he almost went to Kentucky.
I think that's the story everybody tells that Jerry West almost came to Kentucky before picking West Virginia.
That would have been, that would have been something.
I'll try to find that.
I'll try to find out for our number two.
Shannon, do we have some callers?
We do.
We do.
Let's go to Diane.
Hey, good morning, guys.
How are you all today?
Hey, Dan.
Hey, I'm calling up, have a little bit of input on Ryan going to Omaha.
A little story.
My dad who's since passed and my son who was about 10 at the time,
we dropped everything Sunday afternoon, drove to New Jersey to watch Pope and the Cats beat Syracuse.
And we spent the night in Pennsylvania, got to the game, didn't have tickets, came back, started back that night.
So we made a basically a two-day trip out of it.
And I'll never forget it.
And I'm so glad we did it.
That's awesome.
Thanks for the call, Diane.
Yeah, it's about making memories, right?
And having experiences, even when they're imperfect, I think that's, I think the most
imperfect experiences are the best.
Like, oh, bro, it took us 12 hours to get there.
I mean, you know, Drew, like, not everything's going to be Disney World,
where every sidewalk is perfect, right?
Yeah, that's why you don't think about the 12 hours you're in the car.
You're just looking forward to that experience you're about to have,
whether it be Omaha or a basketball game.
You tone out the logistics of getting there.
Yeah, and if you get bored, you could always work on your eights.
I mean, there's plenty of things to do on a long road trip.
I've got another picture I'm going to put on my Instagram,
and I'll talk you through why it caused drama.
Back at this.

That's where SportsSlice comes in.
I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments
in sports and giving you the real story behind the headline.
And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories,
their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear.

What's up, guys?
This is Clivert Taylor the 4th.
And on my podcast, The Clivert Show,
I'm bringing you conversations
about all kinds of stuff.
Like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker walks up to me,
he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue of 42.
Hey, rec, my mama want you to wave at her.
What?
Hey, miss.
Parker.

I'm Joey Dardano, and on my new podcast,

Sike, I'm a comedian.
I'm not qualified to give good advice.
Join me and my comedian friends as we riff,
rant, recommend some of the most legally dubious advice
known to me.
This is Help From a Hypocrite,
the worst advice from the dumbest people you know.
