This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Now, here's Matt Jones.
All right, good morning, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and welcome to this Tuesday edition of Kentucky Sports Radio.
Another live pop-up summer show in Frankfurt, Kentucky will tell you all about
that in just a minute. But as always, Kentucky Sports Radio is sponsored by the T.J. Smith
Law Office. Call T.J., what happens? He'll make them pay. He will make them play.
He will make them play. He'll make them pay. He might make them play and make them pay.
We'll, for the days over, Shannon, we'll introduce our Whiskey Thief Song of the Day.
That's right. We'll introduce our Don Franklin call today. Can't wait.
And we'll introduce our Kentucky branded tweet of the day.
Super excited. Or text of the day. The Aviation Glass Text Machine 502-735-3680.
Ryan, Shannon, Billy, Mario's here. Billy.
This is an awesome pop-up show we're doing right now.
We've got a lot to explain, but first I have breaking news that I've got to tell you about.
Okay, breaking news.
We have breaking news, Matt.
Wani-na-na-na!
Ladies and gentlemen, our two of the podcast is up and available.
Breaking news for all those of you that texted us and tweeted us all day long yesterday,
our two of the podcast from yesterday is available for your listening pleasure.
saying breaking news that's broken news that was 14 hours ago the podcast went up what are you talking
about it was up at eight o'clock last night man i'm telling you when you don't get that when there's
something wrong it's not you this was like technical issue yeah it was not oh okay of course it wasn't
me oh keep it apart of ksr as i was telling billy in the pre-show this is a well-oiled machine
nothing ever goes wrong podcast always goes up on time you know we're always on the no problems
ever uh yeah i already gave him a hard time about it right don't worry okay good it's kind of
like winning the lottery and all your distant cousins come out of the woodwork and I say,
where's my money?
You know, good to see you again.
It's kind of the same thing when the podcast is enough.
It's amazing.
If the podcast doesn't go up, you can tell me about it politely.
But if you yell at me on Twitter, you're getting the mute button.
I'm not going to block you.
If I block you, that gives you the satisfaction of knowing, oh, I really got to him.
He blocked me.
If I mute you, you turn into the old man yelling at the clouds that nobody can hear because
you're on mute.
You don't even know.
Still follow.
You can still call.
comment, but when I never respond, it's because I don't even see you. You don't even exist.
Well, this is another stop in our KSR summer pop-up tour, business tour, highlighting a lot of local
businesses around the area. And today, we're at Jay Mattingly, 1845 distillery in Frankfurt.
Come on out and see us. This place is beautiful. 20 Riley Road. That's the address. 20 Riley Road.
Jay Mattingly, 1845 distillery. And guys, you walk in, you're like, you get that wow fact.
Like, wow, this is really nice in here.
You can come in and do the custom experience.
You get to do the whiskey thief where you put in your field in your bottle, which we know.
You get to pick the style of your bottle.
You get to go in and dip your bottle on the wax.
So it's a whole customized experience when you come in here.
Yeah, the blend your own bourbon experience.
They took us down to the cellar, and we saw where the magic happens.
And now we're here ready to go to do the show.
And this Saturday, this is why we're here, we're promoting a big event on Saturday.
Jay Mattingley's 1845 launching the oldest bourbon known to be available for public tasting.
It's 50 years old bourbon, and they've got three UK royalty guys that are helping promote this.
Kyle Macy, Jack Givens, Rick Robey are helping promote this 50-year-old bourbon, and they've got their own bourbon.
This is the only place where you can come in and taste it is right here at Jay Mattingly.
So if you want to come by today, the guys are here.
They're going to join us here on the radio show a little bit.
But then Saturday is the big bourbon tasting to try their bourbon.
It's 50-year-old bourbon.
If bourbon's been, you know, waiting for this moment for 50 years,
I would almost feel like scared to try it.
You know what I mean?
Like, I want to try it, but it's been sitting there for 50 years,
and this is the day that we're going to pop it open.
So that's a huge day.
So I hope everybody comes out and enjoys this on Saturday with the UK Legends.
Yeah, and not only that, we're going to hear from these guys on KSR a little to
later today. I think the way that we've planned it, we have four headsets, and those three guys are going to come on at the same time.
So, Ryan, hopefully you've brushed up on your interview skills since the Tiger Woods interview.
Just let the guys tell stories. I mean, they're doing it right now.
That's the thing, you know, for like, you know, like Billy's generation, maybe your superstar, UK guy was John Wall.
Maybe Shannon, your guy was Jamal Mashburn. Those three guys were my superstars.
That's 78 team.
I mean, I was 12 years old.
That was my team.
I mean, it's hard to explain the love that people had for that 78 team because that's just, they just love those guys.
Really, I've not seen anything match that love that the fan base had.
And it's hard to explain if you weren't alive during that time, but it had been a while since they'd won a title, and these guys came along.
A couple local guys even on the team in James Lee and Jack Givens, and they won the title that is beloved to this day.
Oh, yeah.
I mean, even younger generations who maybe didn't.
see them play, still know who they are and still love that.
Are you getting a little nervous?
Are you getting a fanboy out when they come over here?
And it's just you and all the guys on the show a long time.
As a matter of fact, Kyle and I used to do the Sunday morning radio show on 630 WLAP and Sunday morning.
Yeah, we did that for several years.
I've done a little radio with Kyle as well.
So come on out and see us.
The guys are going to be here.
Jay Mattingley's 1845, 20 Riley Road is the address.
And we'll talk more about it throughout the show today to get ready for their big event on Saturday.
Well, guys, we've got to start with baseball last night.
I mean, what a pitching performance by both guys for five, six innings.
You know, Myron Metcalf said, who is this ace?
Is this Nolan Ryan?
Is this Cy Young?
Well, you know, as I was watching the game, I think maybe this is Nolan Ryan or Cy Young.
Oh, okay.
They could not hit him.
Matt, you still have the breaking news button.
We need to hit the breaking news one more time.
Oh, another one.
Yeah, another one under there in the first segment.
Running a nah!
Myron Metcalf jinks the UK baseball team last night.
Yes, he did.
That's the breaking news.
He tried to take all the credit for it.
I said you got to hold on.
You got to wait until they go throughout a few more games before we give you credit for Kentucky baseball success.
But, yeah, you know, not facing Texas A&M in the regular season, I think, hurt.
It did.
Obviously, A&M's decision to save their ace for this game.
Work didn't, yeah, didn't do Kentucky any favors.
And now your backs against the wall.
You got to win tonight and move forward, survive in advance.
You've got to tip your cap to the guy.
I mean, when you have a performance like that, the broadcast was calling him Andy Peddett.
it the entire time with that lefty delivery that he had.
And Nick Mingeon had some reassuring comments in the postgame show where he said the last five
College World Series winners did not sweep.
So they had they lost the game and had to go through a similar situation.
So these cats have had their back against the wall before.
And now they're going to continue to prove it.
I think you have to take the approach of, I mean, just like you do in the regular season,
when you're just trying to win a series, right?
Maybe the first two games you split.
You're trying to win that Sunday game.
Yeah.
I know it's different.
But psychologically, I think if you're MNG-owned, you have to just sort of have to preach,
hey, this is just another Sunday game.
We're just trying to win the series each game as you go throughout.
So Kentucky plays Florida tonight at 7 o'clock.
Kentucky did win the series against Florida this year.
Two games of three.
I guess I understand, like, weather could play a big factor tonight.
Like, I think rain is predicted in the May.
Bill, you may know the broadcasting side.
Are they making precautions of moving this game yet, or do you know?
I know it's in the forecast.
We have not got the word that they're moving the game time yet.
Maybe that's changed in the last hour, but I have not seen that.
So 6.45 pregame start for the 7 p.m. start, local time, 6 p.m.
local time there.
So 7 p.m. Eastern time here.
And, you know what?
I think it's completely different Florida team than it was that Kentucky played earlier this year.
I mean, they had to win the regional and the Super Regional on the road.
This is a team that probably shouldn't even have been in the NCAA tournament if they made it.
So they've had their back against the wall for a long time at this point.
Two desperate teams meeting today a little bit later in Omaha.
You have to give A&M credit.
I mean, Kentucky, though, was trying to get something started, you know?
We talked about earlier that shot down the line that was just inches away from being fair.
You've got to think if that were fair, like how the game may have changed.
Kentucky was threatening at one point runners at first and second.
There's a ground ball to third.
Third basement just steps on the bag.
It's an easy double play.
Just little things like that were frustrating last night where Kentucky just couldn't break through the force, break through the wall.
The A&M ace that Myron tried to jinx all day yesterday, Ryan Prager was awesome.
Yeah.
I mean, he had a no-hitter in the seventh inning.
Just kept Kentucky off balance the whole way.
And when you can silence those Kentucky bats, you've done something.
And the same token, Mason Moore, I thought Billy was cruising,
and then it just kind of exploded on him there in the sixth inning,
and they got five runs in one inning.
Yeah, I thought he was a little amped up.
He was throwing 95 at the beginning of the game a little faster than his average.
But he settled in, and a guy that hadn't allowed a run in, what, 28 hours?
Yeah.
Of postseason baseball.
Finally it gave up that spot that alluded to A&M winning.
But you know what?
This is baseball.
It's almost impossible to win every single game you play in baseball.
That's why it's double elimination.
And now the cats will have their chance tonight.
What kind of approach do you think Mingione takes for the starting pitchers?
I was getting ready to ask you that.
You're the pitcher.
I was getting ready to ask you that.
I mean, at this point, your backs against the wall.
You have to throw your best.
So they're number three.
You got to.
Yeah, you got to go to mess around.
Yeah.
You know, the other option, of course, is to piece.
together guys from the bullpen, but I don't think you take that chance.
So the rain would probably help Kentucky.
You know, if you move the game to Thursday, you win that one.
Now you play Texas A&M.
You can maybe bring Poozer back.
Maybe so.
Because that's how the bracket is set up.
The winner of this Kentucky Florida game has to play Texas A&M to win the bracket.
Right.
And that's really the biggest obstacle here is the rest, the lack of rest that you now have
after losing that game versus A&M for your bullpen.
But it's just odd the way Kentucky's.
done it, man. That's such a hard ballpark to hit home runs in. And with the wind blowing in as well,
it was even harder. We've seen Nicholson have back-to-back games with home runs, and now he's
tied the single-season record at Kentucky with 23. And not only that, McCarthy and the guy that
hit the walk-off, I mean, the cats are doing it with home runs. It's hard to hit ballpark.
And if you're trying to find the silver lining of all this, like you said, maybe you can bring
Poozer back. You've got to get by Florida first, of course. Let's not overlook Florida. But if you
can get by them, you've already seen A&M's best when it comes to their pitcher.
So now, if you get a rematch against Texas A&M, you've already seen their best,
and I think that's got to give you a little more confidence moving into that game.
But first, you've got to take care of business tonight.
Well, like we said, they've already, they split.
Well, I mean, they won two or three against Florida over this year.
The two wins went into extra innings.
Two wins went into extra innings.
So, again, they weren't easy wins over Florida.
And the loss they had to Florida, I think, was like 10 to 1, so they got blown out in that game.
Oh, wow.
So, I don't know.
It's hard to predict what you think might happen.
Even though Kentucky has two out of three over Florida, those were hard-fought victories.
So the broadcast begins at 645 tonight.
That's right.
First pitch scheduled for 7 o'clock.
We'll have another watch party at KS. Bar and Grill.
It was packed last night.
I mean, the watch party, it was packed.
There was not an empty seat in the entire restaurant, kind of spilled out into the patio area.
It was, you know, like I said, for five innings, it was just a pitcher's duel.
Isn't it great, though, midway through June?
We still have Kentucky athletics to be excited about.
That's true.
You know, like, you know, usually by now we're talking about,
are there more socks or chairs in the world?
You know, what's your favorite fast food restaurant?
And now we're talking about UK baseball, which is just great.
We do have a dilemma tonight, though, Billy.
What's that?
We have Singo scheduled at 7 o'clock tonight.
First pitch is also at 7 o'clock tonight.
Oh, boy.
So Monique is working on it.
We may get a text at some point during the show what we're going to do with
Singo and First Pitch both scheduled for 7 o'clock.
o'clock tonight at KS. Barr. Can we reschedule
Singo? I think we're going to try. We're going to look into it and see if they
could maybe move it around. I suggest it maybe move Singo up to
six and it only about an hour. I mean, it'd be none in time
for the game. But everybody was, before first pitch,
packed, ready to watch the baseball game last night.
Oh, I know you've been working hard on this, Ryan. You went and scouted out
another restaurant Singo. Did. So we could bring it to KS. Bar.
Mario made this little video promo tape that we put out last night of Singo.
So, well, it was also an interesting last night.
I guess this is for you, Shannon.
Yeah.
All the TVs were on the baseball and had just a couple on the basketball.
You get a complaint?
I didn't even pay attention to the basketball game.
It was a blowout from the beginning.
I mean, I looked, I saw the score.
Self-ex drop 20 in the second quarter.
I'm like, well, that game's over.
It's hard to make sense of what happened in game four.
Yeah.
How did Dallas blow them out in game four?
Well, I was telling Billy, as Billy put it, you don't play with your food.
I like putting that into the analogy of it.
But, you know, it felt like they just didn't show up for game four.
And then we saw the real Boston Celtics again last night.
They've been dominating this entire series.
And then whatever happened in game four, they just didn't show up that night.
The NBA had to make more money.
Right.
It was the frozen envelope.
Okay, so Billy on the pre-show has been on this conspiracy theory thing to where he thinks that teams will lose and tank automatically just so they could get more advertising dollars.
But I would say, well, how do you explain?
Boston sweeping the Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals.
That's good. It doesn't work at all instances.
Here's the thing. He is turning into the conspiracy theory guy on the show.
Instead of you.
Instead of me.
Now, I'm turning into Shannon the dude is what's happening to.
He's getting up. He says he wakes up. He doesn't have to set an alarm.
I heard him say that.
Because I've been telling you that.
Like, when you get on a certain schedule, I'll even wake up on Saturdays at like the same time every morning, no alarm necessary.
So he's now experiencing the same thing where he's waking up with no alarm.
He now drinks coffee.
Drinking coffee right now.
I said pretty soon he's going to be waking up.
He's going to be watching the Today Show.
He'll put on a little stone-tipple pilots.
He's turning into me.
Well, it's funny you guys say this because at our show on Friday, it's Sulphur Creek Inn, right?
Yes.
That's right, Sulphur Creek, Mike's Landing.
Mike's Landing.
It's open to the public.
We had a monster show there last year.
A ton of people were doing it again Friday, inviting everybody out.
I'm going to have you guys compete against each other in a version of the KSR pre-show newlywed game.
Oh.
Okay. So I'm going to get some questions.
We're going to see how well you do know each other.
You guys are like an old married couple already.
We're coming up on our three-year anniversary for the pre-show.
See?
Three years, right.
So we're going to play.
You're still kind of newlyweds.
We're going to play the newlywed game on Friday.
The honeymoon period's over, though.
Well, that ended, I think, after the first day.
All right, Ryan, Billy, and Shannon, Mario is going to join us as well.
We've got Rick Robey, Kyle, Macie, Jack Givens.
They're going to come on at the bottom of the hour at 1030.
Tell us while we're out here at Jay Mattingley's 1845 distillery.
And they've got the 50-year-old bourbon tasting on Saturday.
The oldest bourbon you can taste at a tasting will be here and only here in Frankfurt at 20 Riley Road.
Come on out and see us.
We'll be right back.

What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves.
I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nasree.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us
on the night-to-night bases on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers,
why he got the ball like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah,
you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.

The biggest decisions.
If you're going to look at stats and numbers,
he has no shot at making this World Cup team.
And the truth about the U.S. national team.
It wouldn't be a huge surprise
if our team ends up in the quarterfinals
or potentially a great run into the semifinals.
The World Cup is almost here.

All right, we're back.
Ryan, Drew and Billy on our KSR.
Drew is actually not here.
What I say, Drew?
Yeah, I'm Shannon.
Shannon and Billy.
Pleasure to meet you, Ryan.
Drew is enjoying you, Matt.
Drew is enjoying vacation, just like Matt is.
I saw the picture of Drew on a balcony with his pink baseball hat on.
Look like he was asleep.
Yeah.
Probably getting ready to make sure he was awake for the baseball game.
last night. The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety presenting partner of our business tour this summer needs two mentions to show, by the way, Billy.
We'll be sure to get that in. We're at Jay Mattingley's 1845 distillery in downtown Frankfurt or at 20 Riley Road.
Come on out. I've got a big event on Saturday we'll talk to talk more about. But we just got some info about the baseball pitcher.
Apparently Kentucky may start Neiman. Am I saying it right?
Nyman?
Nyman.
but he was also the guy who started when Florida run ruled him earlier this season.
That's a tough call.
It's a bit of a dilemma, I would say, for Vengeon.
Do you go, I mean, if he's your number three and he's been that for the entire season,
do you just kind of forget about what happened there and just still say,
hey, he's still our third best option.
Let's go with him.
Let's roll the dice.
Or, again, do you piece something together with your bullpen?
It's a tough call.
Well, the alternative, like you're saying, is the bullpen game.
and then if you were to win, then your bullpen is in shambles for the next game that you have to win.
So I think you've got to rely on the guys that got you there.
And, you know, this is playoff baseball.
We're at the college World Series in Omaha.
I think to a degree you have to throw out what's happened in the past,
even if there is one bad start that he's had versus the team that you're going to take on.
But you know what?
I think these guys are going to be confident.
They're going to be motivated.
Mick Mign-John talked about how they're able to let go of a win or a loss very quickly.
So I think those, that's the rest of the time.
to be for success in a tournament like this.
I kind of agree.
I mean, you lose, you're done.
Season's over. You got to throw. If this is your third best guy,
even if Florida lit him up earlier this year,
I think you still got to go out there and see if you can get a couple of innings out of him, Shannon.
Yeah, I mean, and then I guess you're trying to play devil's advocate.
You could say, well, they've already seen them before.
Maybe you want to mix things up and give Florida something they haven't seen a lot of.
And maybe that is where you go to the bull.
I mean, I could see both sides.
Ming Jones got a tough decision to make.
But, you know, I'm going to trust whatever decision he makes.
This team has been the surprise of college baseball.
If we're being real about it, like nationally.
I'm not talking about the SEC nationally.
This team has been the surprise.
And really, like Billy said, the other surprise may be Florida.
You know, they weren't even supposed to be in the tournament.
There's a chance they weren't even going to make the tournament.
Here they are now.
I've got a chance to get into the final four.
And two desperate teams in the best conference for baseball there is.
I mean, look at Tennessee, look at Texas A&M.
Look at how they've dominated.
So you've got to beat the best to be the best.
And I don't think this team would want it any other way, to be honest.
They're going to embrace this challenge.
And look, the hitters have to show up.
I mean, zero or one is not enough.
Ryan Nicholson was able to get another home run yesterday, but they've got to do better than that.
Yeah, Nicholson prevented the shutout.
You know, Ryan Prager was cruising through and no hitter into the seventh.
Cats finally got two hits in the bottom of the seventh inning.
But then they were in jeopardy of getting shut out.
I didn't think you could shut out this Kentucky baseball team the way they swing the bat.
You know, Shane and I have talked a lot about the unwritten
rules of baseball on the pre-show recently, and one of them that I think that people do
still abide by is not talking to a pitcher during a no-hitter.
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
I never really understood that.
I don't either.
You want to jinx them.
The only no-hitters I ever have are like in Little League, you know, like 11-year-old
Little League, and they didn't care.
Then they were just throwing sunflower seeds at you and Bazooka bubble gum.
It didn't matter, you know, at that level if you were throwing a no-hitter or not.
But if I'm a pitcher, I don't care.
Like, you could talk to me.
I think not talking to a pitcher that's throwing a no-hitter would be just make it even more awkward, in my opinion.
I know that's the unwritten rule, but.
Yeah.
Because you see the video.
Because you would normally talk.
If I was going out there and I'd already given up two runs and six hits, you would be talking to me.
Yeah.
So not talking to me just because I have a no-hitter, to me, that's even more awkward.
They show the guys that are having no-hitter going in the seventh.
They're sitting by themselves in the dugout, you know, got their jacket on, keeping their arm warm.
And nobody's around them.
I mean, there's like a bubble, you know, getting around him.
You don't want them jinx him, shank him.
mess it up. Baseball is ridiculous. It is. You had a lot of superstitions when you played.
Well, baseball players are superstitious by nature anyway. Not me.
So if I was in a streak, I wore the same jock, the same shirt, the same shirt.
See, I always believe if you're good, you don't need luck. If you're good, you're good.
You don't want to mess with the baseball mojo. Maybe you could have used a little superstition.
Maybe it could have. Maybe I want to help my college career.
Another good story that I think this was for you, Billy, is Rory McElroy.
Yes. I mean, we talked about it a little bit yesterday how he kind of,
of exploded in the final round of the U.S. Open missed, like, two puts that were like three feet,
four feet? One three-footer, another one was like four or five feet. He definitely lost the U.S.
Open this week and compared to Bryce and D. Shambu winning it. And this is the guy that hadn't
won a major since 2014. The last one he won was at Valhalla. So he has been right on the cusp
of a lot of them. But he said it was probably one of the worst moments of his career in golf and he's
taking some time off to think about it. I told Shannon this, all I could think about was you
missing your puns, and then going to jail.
Gets in your head, I'm telling you, man.
It gets in your head.
That hole all of a sudden looks like it's about the size of a ping pong ball you're trying to put it in.
But, you know, they broke last night.
He's going to take a couple weeks away from golf, and he said this is maybe the worst weekend he's ever had on the golf course.
Well, they should have thrown him in jail, too.
Hey, amen, they should have thrown him in jail.
But, yeah, I mean, we were talking about, you know, 496 putts at that distance, and you've been perfect.
It's kind of hard.
I mean, I know that's, like, the biggest moment where you really got to hit him where it really counts.
but I think you've had a good run if you've made nearly 500 straight points.
Yeah, think about that, Ryan.
He was 496 for 496 under 3 feet this season on the PGA tour
and then missed that one that ultimately cost him the tournament.
So when he missed the first one, that was obviously still in his head
when he's lined up to take the second one.
A bogeyed three of the last four holes, I believe, to lose the tournament.
So you've got a feel for the guy that is probably considered by many
to be one of the most entertaining, if not best players in golf.
Now, a lot of people I've been making fun of Rory.
Is he not a personable guy?
Is he liked in the clubhouse?
I mean, he is a superstar in the world of golf.
Yeah.
So, I mean, liked, I think he has liked, but he did leave without speaking to the media.
Yes, he did.
And I guess that's a faux paul for many.
Yes.
But I don't know.
He just went through the worst moment of his career.
Some of the things, we always expect athletes to be able to answer questions as soon as the most emotional moment of their life is over.
And I think that's sometimes expecting too much.
You're somebody that interviewed people right after those moments.
It's the worst.
The going on losing the locker room is the absolute worst,
especially when you're talking about college kids, and they're crying, it's awful.
All right, well, take our break, come back.
Rick Robey, Jack Givens, Kyle Macy,
will all join us, talk about their 50-year-old bourbon.
78 Legends is the name of it.
We'll be back live from Jay Mattingley's 1845 distillery in Frankfurt.

This is Clivert Taylor the Fourth.
And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff,
like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue with 42.
Hey, Wreck, my mama want you to weigh better.
What?
Hey, Miss Parker.

What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defining the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows.
Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash will get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers
why he got the ball.
Like, you go through a training camp with that,
Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court,
and you're going to get the ball.

Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Here's Matt Jones.
All right, welcome back Kentucky Sports Radio live at Jay Mattingley's 1845 distillery in Frankfurt.
where they have a big event coming up on Saturday
where the public can taste the oldest bourbon
that's available for public tasting.
It'll be Saturday here,
and the guys, Jack Givens, Rick Robey, Kyle Macy,
have used that for their 78 Legends.
Bourbon that will be on sale here at Jay Mattingly's.
So, Jack, you know, we've talked to you before
about your bourbon,
but this is kind of a great event
where people can actually have this public tasting
to the 50-year-old bourbon.
Yeah, it's something new.
It's fun.
You know, we've been connected with Jeff and Jay Manly for a while.
He's a buddy of mine.
He lives in Georgetown.
I live there.
So we go way back.
But to have an opportunity to taste this product is something new, definitely.
And, you know, I'm not a bourbon expert, but we've talked to enough people who are,
people who have been in and people who are familiar with the bourbon industry.
and they tell us it's a great, great, great product.
50-year-old blended with the five-year-old,
and they've come up with a recipe that is just unbelievable.
Rick, you were telling me the story before the show,
how you guys got in this involved with this 50-year-old barrel of bourbon.
I think it's a great story.
Well, somebody came up to me and said,
we had one more extra barrel, a 50-year-old,
that was resting when you all won the championship.
So I said, sounds like a great idea.
Let me call Jack and Kyle.
I tasted the 50-year-old.
It was really woody and heavy.
So he said, let's go ahead and let them do a blend
with a 5-year-old, and it came out excellent.
So I asked, was this 50-year-old bourbon barrel bourbon
is sitting in a warehouse somewhere?
Well, it was the Thompson family.
it was one of their last barrels of it,
and we were lucky enough to get the opportunity to get it.
So now, Kyle, people can come out Saturday.
They can sample it, and then, of course,
we want you to buy a bottle of it,
the 7-8 Legends bourbon.
Right, they come out and try it,
and also we'll sign stuff if anybody.
We're not encouraging to bring 100 different things for Jack to sign,
but, you know, if they want to bring something out,
we'll be happy to do it.
More than Mary.
And we like seeing, you know, fans that may be really,
called long, long time ago when we were playing.
Well, I said that earlier.
For my generation, I was 12 years old when you guys won the title.
You guys were my heroes.
Y'all know, it makes you feel really old.
Well, I can go back, listen to this, Rick.
Kyle Macy, I was probably eight years old, and he was Mr.
basketball in Kentucky.
He was a point guard.
He played for his dad.
That was going to be me.
Kyle Macy was my guy.
I was going to play for my dad.
In Indiana.
In Indiana.
Yeah, I should have brought that.
Oh, yeah, I should have brought that up.
He played for his dad at Peru High School in Northern Indiana.
I was going to play for my dad.
I was going to be Mr. Basketball.
Then he went to Purdue.
I'm going to go to Purdue, transferred to Kentucky.
And then I got to jumped on board with you guys.
But I tried to explain.
It's hard to explain, Jack, the love and admiration the fan base had for that 78 team,
unless you lived it, unless you were part of it.
Yeah, it had been a while since Kentucky had won a championship.
The fans were hungry to say the least for championship.
And I think another thing that helped us is that we stayed for four years.
So the fans really got to know us.
And I'm talking about know everything about us.
So it's a little different now.
But yeah, I think that all of that has to do.
But winning the championship makes you a little bit special for the Kentucky fans.
And we're still enjoying that today.
You know, that's 17-18 events like Saturday.
You'll get to relive a lot of that because the fans are going to come in
and talk to you guys about every moment of the.
that season. It's going to be a great time and just look forward to the people getting out here.
And it's been a great week for me with the Celtics winning it.
He waited like five minutes, Kyle.
He waited a whole five minutes.
Five minutes. I can talk about it.
So you won one title with the Celtics, right?
81.
81. You won the championship.
It's been a long drought.
They had only won, hadn't won one since, what, 08?
08.
08.
But this is banner number 18.
That's amazing.
It's great.
In fact, for me to stay up,
just late as I did last night, it was great.
But it was a blowout last night.
You could have gone to bed early.
You knew they were going to win last night.
I didn't watch celebration.
And I will say, Ron, I helped contribute to Rick
and the Celtics winning the championship the year they won it.
I was with the Hawks in Atlanta,
and they abused me.
He and Larry Bird, so I contributed to them winning the championship.
Well, Kyle, you said then after Rick got traded to Phoenix,
you guys were teammates together out in Phoenix.
Yeah, we were.
He came under trade with DJ, went to Boston,
and he came out and played in the Valley.
And I used the same story.
The day you and Michael Jordan combined for 70 points was a special moment in your history.
Yeah, you know, playoffs are big, and so you kind of get fired up
and get ready to play and going into the old Boston Garden,
first round action with McHale and Bird and Parrish and the star teams,
the Celtics back then.
And so, yeah, Michael and I, we kind of got in a groove there
and combined for seven.
So he had 63 and I had seven.
That's a good number, man.
I like that.
But, you know, Jack and I combined for 50 in the championship game.
Oh, that's true.
41, I had nine.
You had nine.
Well, there we go.
Well, we had 62.
That's right.
You know, Jack, you're so involved with the UK basketball program now on being
on part of the broadcast team.
What are your thoughts about the Mark Pope era kind of officially kicking off this past weekend?
Yeah, I love what Mark has done.
Not just with the team, the players, but with the coaching staff, especially.
Got some good guys in those positions.
But, yeah, I can't wait to get started.
I didn't get to practice yesterday.
I'm hoping to go either later today or tomorrow, so I get a look at them.
But it's going to be a fun season.
I'm very excited about what he's done.
Mark's a great coach.
I mean, really, really good coach.
So it's going to be interesting.
How about you, Rick?
Have you had a chance to talk to Mark?
Not yet, but I will say he reached out to me about five days ago by a text,
said, here's my cell number.
If you need anything, come back and see us, get back involved.
So I'm looking forward to getting down there and beat me.
Kyle?
Rick sent a text back, said, yeah, I could use a size 16.
I've texted.
I'm texting back and forth with him, but see, I was doing what Jack's doing now back when Mark was playing.
So I've known him for a little while, a little while.
And a real good guy, he's going to do things the right way.
I'm excited for him.
I hope it turns into a real good year,
and I think the fan base obviously is very excited as well.
You know, I forgot that.
You were on the broadcast crew in that 96th, in that era when Pope was playing.
Right.
injury to Derek Anderson and Nassi had made a few free throws in the Arizona game.
Nazi was 0 for 6 from the free throw line of the Arizona game.
It's hard to do.
It's hard to do.
Oh, for six.
So, you know, since you're kind of in deep with it, are fans' expectations at this point kind of seem like they don't expecting him to win a national championship everything?
I think the expectations are kind of in check right now.
Do you agree with that?
And I think that's where the fans need to be.
I mean, I know everybody's really excited about the,
possibilities, and that's great.
But I think people also understand that it might take a little time, not as hard as it
used to.
I mean, just think about it without this transfer portal, man, having to put together an entire
new team.
Yeah.
That would be tough.
But I think Mark has gone out, and he's picked the players he wanted, players who can play,
experience.
I tell people, if you think about the teams, Kentucky's lost to, whether you're talking about
NCAA tournament, whether you're talking SEC basketball over the last five years, if you look
at the teams Kentucky has lost to, they are exactly the team that Mark has put together for next
year. Experience, guys who have been there, done that, who've been in every situation, they
knocked on the door for championships, all defensive players in their conferences, all the
things that those teams had who have beaten Kentucky the last few years, we have that now.
So that should lead to some wins for us.
Rick, you like the way the roster's kind of put it together?
It looks good to me.
Yeah.
It's going to be more fun to watch these older kids play.
Yeah.
I think they'll become more like our team where they learn each other's weaknesses and strengths.
I'm looking forward to getting back involved and watch them.
But, can you imagine when you were coaching, you had a whole new roster for this transfer portal every year?
You're just going to revitalize your roster every year.
I don't know how coaches do it nowadays because not only you're recruiting new players every year,
but you also have to recruit your own players and try to get them to stay.
Yeah, that's true.
It's crazy.
But, you know, the game's changed so much from when we played because if you look now at the kid from Purdue, Zach Eadie.
Uh-huh, yes.
If he'd have been, if the game had been like when they played back in the 80s, he'd have been by far the number one pitch.
no doubt.
And now they're talking, you know, maybe 15 to 20 in the draft because it's played out more perimeter.
And the big men have to be able to step out and play on the floor.
Yeah, we talked about that.
You know, if you had a big man, you were set.
Yes.
And had Lajuan, Kareem.
And if you had that seven-footer in the post, guards come down, throw it in the post.
Yeah.
We talked about that with Oscar.
You know, in a different era, Oscar would have been a top 10 pick.
Absolutely.
You know, but in the era we're in now, he's trying to get out of the G-League.
He's just trying to make it
But it is a different game now
I mean the bigs want to be guards
They've always
Rick always wanted to be a guard
He always wanted to be
Now they allow Rick to be a point guard
You know, that's just the way the game is
Coach Hall wouldn't let you step out and shoot the jumper
No
What was the most
You knew you were going to be in trouble if you went how far
Outside the Prethole
That was it
He'd like me to stay in there
Shoot that laughter
to sheet that right end.
It is amazing
how the game has changed and it is strictly
it's a shooter's game now.
Are there some shooters on this roster?
You think that we can get excited about?
Yeah, I don't.
Hopefully there are because that's the game.
You've got to be able to put the ball in the basket.
And he does have some shooters.
He does have some guys who can fill it up.
So it's going to be a good blend
of the thing that I'm
frankly most excited
about is
the improvement that this team can make on the defensive end of the floor.
Yes.
I mean, you have two or three guys who were conference defensive players of the year.
Yes.
And guys who have that experience who know the difference between guarding and really guarding
and making it look like you guarding.
So I'm looking forward to what this team might be able to do defensive.
Which one were you in college, Jack?
Hey, listen, listen.
I learned from one of the best, Kevin Grevy, one of the lessons I learned from Grieve was, hey, listen, you have to learn to make it look like you're playing defense in practice.
And because we guarded each other.
He said, I'll make it look like I'm playing defense and we can score anytime we want.
And James Lee and I did the same thing.
James and I would guard each other, man, and we still haven't defended each other yet.
I may be totally wrong with it.
Is there some story where one of you guys had to push somebody's car on a...
Oh, man, that's...
Isn't there a story there?
Yeah, so I came down on my recruiting visit.
Oh, man.
There was a snow in Lexington, which was kind of unusual.
And on Rose, that little hill that goes up through campus, his trino got stuck.
Rick.
Yeah.
So I say, Kyle.
Get out and push.
Push.
That's your job.
On his business, man.
On his recruiting visit.
You make him get out of the car in the snow to push your car up the hill just to get out of the snow.
You know, I may have come here right out of high school.
Oh, that's before he went to Purdue.
So you probably steering him away the first time.
I knew there was some kind of story about somebody's pushing somebody's car or something.
So guys, we're at Jay Mattingly's 1845 distillery.
It's at 20 Riley Road,
R-E-I-L-L-Y.
Got some folks who've already come in here,
checking out this new bourbon.
78 Legends bourbon, you can get it here.
Yes, and I think the sampling of probably five bourbons
that they offer here at Mattingly, Jay Maddenly,
our bourbon will be a part of that,
be one of those that you will sample.
I see.
And like I say, it'd be the only time.
you'll get to sample right here any day.
But you can sample that 50-year-old bourbon.
Saturday from 9 to 11 is the tasting for your bourbon.
I know people that are bourbon guys, Rick, they're excited about it.
You know, the rare chance to taste a 50-year-old bourbon.
It tastes good.
I'm not a real big bourbon drinker, but it is very smooth.
And from what the experts say, it's one of a kind.
and you guys will be out here to sign sign the bottle on Saturday.
Yeah, whatever.
Yeah.
Yeah, we have actually signed every bottle.
We made 19178 bottles to begin with.
Oh, that's cool.
For 1978.
We signed every one of them.
But we will be here to take pictures.
If you have other stuff you want to sign, we'll be happy to do that.
If you want that bottle personalized, we'll be happy to add your name.
and do it up the way that you might want it done up.
So we're looking forward to it.
You guys are good guys to do that for the fan base.
They love it.
They love that team at 78 team.
The bourbon lover is going to love this bourbon bottle.
So thank you guys for doing this.
Thanks for coming on with us.
We appreciate Jack Givens, Rick Robey, Kyle Macy.
They'll be out here Saturday morning from 9 to 11 at Jay Mattingley's 1845 distillery.
Appreciate it, guys.
Thank you very much.
We'll take our break.

What's up, guys?
This is Clivert Taylor the Fourth.
And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff.
Like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker walks up to me, he goes,
hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Quarterback on office blue with 42.
Hey, rep, my mama wants you to wave at her.
What?
Where's she at?
Hey, Miss Parker.
Listen to the Clifford show on the Iheart radio app,
Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
What's up, fam, it's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast, Point Game is about defying the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows, without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
He has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nash will get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball.
Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
So listen to Point Game on the offensive.

American soccer is about to explode.
The World Cup is coming.
Ramers sending on to Ernie Stewart the chip.
I'm Tab Ramos.
I'm Tom Boe.
On our podcast, Inside American Soccer, you'll get the real storylines.
I'm not worried about Policic.
I'm not worried about Balligan.
I'm not worried about McKinney.
My only concern is what happens in the back.
The biggest decisions.
If you're going to look at stats and numbers,
he has no shot at making this World Cup team.
And the truth about the U.S. national team.
It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals
or potentially a great run into the semifinals.
The World Cup is almost here.
Experience it all with us.

Welcome back.
We are at Jay Mattingley's 1845 Distillery, Kentucky Sports.
Sports Radio live on our KSR summer pop-up tour.
We highlight local businesses.
Joined again now by Shannon the dude, Billy Relage, and Super Mario Maitland joins us.
Guys, I don't know about it, but that was like, I was like a kid in a candy store right there.
That's those three guys, that's UK royalty.
They are UK royalty, and they were all three here together at the same time.
Legends, as we've talked about.
And you, you know, growing up watching those guys, I know that had to be exciting for you to be able to sit there and listen to all the old stories,
maybe some behind-the-scenes stuff you hadn't heard before.
Well, that's the thing.
I think I would like to have them on for like a whole show and just talk stories.
You know, not necessarily probably to promote something,
but tell some behind-the-scenes stories about playing with Coach Hall or things that maybe.
Like, I knew there was some story about where one of them had to push somebody else car.
I didn't know what it was, but I didn't realize it was Kyle pushing it up a hill
because it was stuck in the snow.
When Shannon takes one of his thousand vacation days a year,
I've had Jack Givens on several times on the pre-show,
and he's told one of my favorite stories.
from that season when they're losing to Florida State at halftime in the NCAA
tournament game and Joby Hall comes in and peels the pain off the walls and starts all the
backup guys and so you know they all they're full of stories and so I'm sure there was a couple
of good ones there today they definitely have some stories man I mean even their NBA careers
he talked about Michael Jordan and playing with Larry Bird it's just very very interesting to hear
their stories and and see where they're coming from tomorrow you had Jack on your
podcast too didn't he came and joined your podcast yeah it was legendary getting to catch up
with him and see him again and hear his stories on my podcast.
It was a great platform, great episode.
I enjoyed it.
They're going to have a good crowd.
We have people already coming in here today to kind of check out this bourbon.
But Shannon, I think probably Saturday morning for this tasting.
Oh, yeah.
I mean, you're kind of a bourbon guy.
Is that excite you?
You know you can taste a 50-year-old bourbon?
Yeah, with UK Legends.
Being here, too?
Absolutely.
That's cool.
And they got a great variety, too.
I was kind of shopping around as you were doing that interview,
just looking and seeing the different varieties that they have.
I mean, it's quite a selection they have.
Jay Maddingley is the name of.
We're at 20 Riley Road in downtown Franklin,
and the renowned bourbon critic Jim Murray
has proclaimed this bourbon.
This is a quote, Billy.
As a thing of charm, character, and depth.
This bourbon has now become a legend in its own right.
Okay, I'll have to try it.
We can taste the depth in the bourbon or the charm.
You know, I'm a big vibes guy.
This place is really cool.
I like the lighting already and the selection.
We already went down in the cellar,
so who knows where else we can go here.
Oh, I didn't know.
could do that.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, if you got here earlier with the pre-show.
The pre-show got the little VIP tree.
We got the tour.
That's right.
We got the tour.
We got to see where it all goes down or you get to customize your bottle and everything.
We'll take you later.
Mario and I didn't get that, did we?
No, we didn't.
We didn't come early enough, I guess.
Yeah.
You prioritize the trip to McDonald's overcoming and getting the tour.
So they dip the candle in the wax like it's kind of famous for bourbon bottle.
They do that down in the cellar downstairs also.
Yeah, that's right.
We're going to have to see that.
We're going to see that.
Well, we got a break coming up here.
We can go down and maybe check that out right now.
We'll go to the phone lines.
We come back.
859-2802-2-8-7.
If you want to call and get on board.
I'm glad Mario wore his Boston Celtics shoes for us.
He's really excited about the Celtics win last night.
Don't do that.
Don't do that.
It's two different greens I got off.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, that's more like thin-mint girls-calf-a-green.
I thought he was celebrating the Celtics 18th title last night.
I didn't know what he was doing there.
Definitely not.
I have some words for the Celtics.
Oh, wow.
Mario could not stop talking about the Celtics all the way here.
He loves them.
Loves them.
Loves the Boston.
Take our break, come back.
Come out and see us.
Jay Maddenley's 1845 distillery in Frankfurt.
Ryan, Shannon, Billy, and Mario.
We'll be back with our number two of Kentucky Sports Radio.

This linebacker.
Yeah, you know these kids.
This linebacker walks up to me.
He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue with 42.
Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her.
What?
Where's she at?
Hey, Miss Parker.
