This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Now, here's Matt Jones.
All right, good morning, everyone.
Welcome to this Wednesday.
Wednesday edition of Kentucky Sports Radio, Ryan Lemon,
joined by Super Mario Maitland and Shannon the dude this morning.
As always, Kentucky Sports Radio, sponsored by the...
the T.J. Smith Law Office called T.J. What happened, Shannon?
He'll make them pay. He'll make them pay.
Later today, today, we'll have our Whiskey Thief call of the day.
We'll have our Don Franklin. Whiskey Thief's song of the day.
There you go. There you go. Our Don Franklin call of the day.
There you go.
And the Kentucky branded tweet of the day. All that coming up.
So happy Juneteenth to everybody. It is a federal holiday.
A lot of offices are closed. Banks are closed.
So we expect a lot of people coming out here to KS Bar and Grill today because Shannon, we're playing musical chairs today.
It's one of those days where it's game day.
It is game day.
I mean, the UK baseball team, the game against Florida got rained out last night.
So they moved it to 11 o'clock this morning Eastern time.
10 o'clock out there, 11 o'clock here.
Yeah.
Well, I don't know if you're not sure not, but we do our show from 10 to 12.
Yep.
So that's right in the middle of our show.
The UK baseball team is going to start.
So we're just going to make it like this is going to be like the UK baseball pregame show.
Yes, it is.
So we're going to get you ready for the game.
We're going to have a huge watch party here at KS Bar and Grill.
I'm pumped.
And while we're doing it, we're still going to be doing the show.
I'm pumped, man.
I see you got the Kentucky jersey on.
I'm sporting the blue.
The Kentucky hat on.
I like to see it.
Well, because the other day I wore an EKU maroon shirt and got crucified
for wearing Texas A&M colors on the day we've Kentucky played Texas A&M.
So I got my blue on today.
So, Shannon, explain it all.
Make sure we got it all right.
At 1045, what happens?
We're going to break away from our.
affiliates in Louisville and Lexington.
Okay, so then you'll need to go to 1240 AMWSFC.
That is the Somerset affiliate that's on the IHeart Radio app, and you can listen to KSR on that
station if you want to.
Yeah, so we're going to do a two-hour show regardless.
We have to do the show for the rest of the affiliates.
So if you want to listen to KSR during the UK baseball game, you can to switch it to 1240 AM
WSFC down in Somerset.
Because like Shannon said, here in Lexington, WLAP is going to be carrying the baseball game.
And in Louisville, WKRD will be carrying the baseball game.
So there's a lot going on.
A lot going on.
Best of both worlds.
Best of both worlds.
Watch the Batcats win and listen to KSR all at the same time.
So we will have a big watch party here.
We've got some people already here ready to go.
I ask when they're going to stay for the game.
Absolutely.
Well, now the question is, after you win the first game, Shannon, there's another game tonight at 7 o'clock.
Right. We talked about what Mingione would do with the pitching situation.
You got to have everybody ready to go in the bullpen, right?
I mean, at this point, it's winner go home.
So I think anybody that's on the staff has got to be ready.
I think that even includes Poozer from just a couple of days ago.
You know, maybe you could even get an inning out of him if you have to go into the game later on today.
So it should be interesting to see how the strategy that he has for the pitching staff as it goes throughout the next couple.
Hopefully a couple of games.
Let's hope they won this first game against Florida to move on later.
So, Marley, play Florida.
They just played them just a couple weeks ago towards the end of the regular season.
Down there, won two of three, but the two wins were in extra innings,
and the one they lost was like 10 to 1.
They got kind of blown out.
And this is the team that they had a few players that, you know,
don't necessarily like the antics that they don't like us having fun.
Isn't that right?
That's right.
Yeah, Florida's best player.
You remember that Shannon?
After the game kind of was talking some smack about.
about Kentucky and their antics that they do during the game.
Remember that?
I do, yeah.
And, you know, they just got to deal with it because when they get beat again,
they're not going to like it anymore today than they did earlier in the season when it happened.
But, you know, I think that I was telling Billy on the pre-show,
I think that contributes to why this team Kentucky has been so successful.
It's the laid-back, fun sort of environment, I think, in the dugout that contributes to their success on the field.
Shiner, that's their style of play.
like to have fun.
You know, they like to, you know, joke around and the dugout.
And it works, it works for them.
So you can't really, you know, blame them.
And, you know, obviously the other team, they don't want to see another team having fun.
You know, they think it's a little league kind of style.
So, but that works for Kentucky.
They should keep doing it.
And I want to see them go back to that and don't change anything.
So tonight, Chan mentioned the pitching.
They're pitching Dominic Nyman.
He's been their number three guy pretty much the whole year and has done pretty well this year.
Now, he did go through a little stretch where he was.
wasn't thawing is great.
But I think Shannon the thought is he's a lefty, bring him in.
Maybe he can find some of that magic he had early in the season.
Florida is the same boat.
They're pitching a guy who's like their number three or four guy.
So this could be a game where there's a lot of balls in play, a lot of runs on the board today.
If Draft Kings has an over under, you may want to bet the over on this one today.
Yeah, I mean, I don't think you can necessarily go back and look at that game that Kentucky lost to Florida.
I mean, he didn't get much run support either, so let's start there.
It's 10 to 1.
But you know, you've got to go with the guy who is available, who is your best.
And if it's your number three guy, number four guy, whoever it may be,
I think you've got to just put that game behind you.
As Mn Gone likes to say, our wins expire at midnight, so do the losses.
So you just put that game behind you, you go forward and throw the best that you've got.
So I think that's what he's going to do.
So this game could be, there's a lot of run scored, a lot of pitching changes.
A lot of pitching changes.
Johnny Fullstaff is going to hit the mound, I think, today for both teams.
So this game could last five hours.
Oh, man.
This is going to be a long one.
It's going to be a long one.
I'm not complaining, though.
I'm not either.
I don't mind watching it.
But I do have a question for you because you're a baseball guy.
All right, we're ready.
Shannon and I are baseball guys.
Pitching.
How many pitchers are there on the actual Kentucky baseball team?
That's a good question.
About eight or nine?
Probably eight or nine that C action.
They've probably got more than that.
They've probably got 15, 16 pitchers, don't you think, Shannon?
and only maybe 10, 9, 10 of them maybe actually get on the bound.
Yeah, and then you get into college,
I mean, a lot of guys can pitch.
They can also play position.
So it's not exactly like the major leagues where you have, you know,
one guy who's dedicated to only being a pitcher.
Right.
So you hope that it doesn't get to that situation
where you're playing position players at pitcher.
But I think they're going to be okay.
I mean, this bullpen has been a strength throughout the season.
They've got some guys that could come in and really shut teams down.
So Minge-O is going to be relying on that today.
if it goes to two games.
So we definitely have options.
So that's the good thing about it.
But Ryan, I want to ask you, he said eight or nine,
is it necessarily they switch them out because they get fatigued?
What's the method of why they switch out so many different pitchers?
Yeah.
Yeah, a pitcher's arm gets tired.
Maybe they're breaking balls not as sharp or their slider's not as sharp,
so it gets a little tired.
You bring in a fresh arm out of the bullpen,
and they like to do lefty versus lefty, righty versus righty.
So that's why I think Minggione and the full.
Florida coach will probably switch up a lot, Shannon, trying to get those matchups in a game that
could come down to the last inning.
Yeah, you saw that too, just a couple of games ago where there was, you get down to, you got 26
outs on that 27th out sometimes is the toughest one to get, and he had to go to the bullpen,
and at that point it just becomes like a, almost like a chess match, right?
You're just trying to be one step ahead of your opponent, and that's what Mangeon has done
really just masterfully going to the right guy at the right time in the bullpen.
He's got, you know, Cam O'Brien in the bullpen,
he's the first guy he goes to, and he can get you two or three innings.
Then that Jackson, Novey, the lefty comes in.
So you're right, the bullpen, they've really been strong,
especially during the postseason.
Yeah, and I think, you know, again, today, if you have to play a double header,
you're going to be relying heavily on that.
Yeah.
Now, there's something else that, so again, at 11 o'clock,
well, 1045, the pregame show will start.
We'll tell you what you need to do again,
but if you want to listen to the baseball game,
switch over to 1240 WSFC and Somerset.
We're still going to be doing the radio show, though, KSR here, even throughout the game.
You know, we can't call live action.
That's kind of against the rules.
We can react to it.
We can react to it.
That's exactly right.
So, you know, and Tom Hart was supposed to be here today with us.
He's always on Wednesdays, but he's doing the Atlanta Braves game tomorrow.
Shout out Tom Hart.
How about that?
So, yeah, good luck to him, and I know he's enjoying every second of that.
But there was something pretty cool that happened last night out in Omaha we got to talk about.
What's up?
After they called the game off because of the rain, the incoming storm.
Coach Mignjone and the UK staff out there decided on the spur of the moment,
let's have a meet-and-greet for all of our fans that are out here.
Do they go meet all the fans?
They set up, there was a big hallway, and they set up tables down this hallway in the hotel.
All the players set at these tables, and the massive amount of, I mean,
Shannon, if you saw the video, there's like thousands of UK fans.
fans came for the meet and greet and get autographs with all those UK baseball players yesterday.
It was really cool.
Yeah, I'm glad they did that a chance for the baseball team to show their appreciation
for all the fans who made the trip out to Omaha.
And Midgeeone, I mean, he called on everybody who was just a casual fan watching to jump
on the big blue bandwagon, as he called it.
And I think a lot of fans have done that.
And it was really helpful in the first game.
Obviously, it didn't work out too well against Texas A&M.
But just for Midgeeone to show his appreciation for the fans, I thought that was a really cool gesture.
Very cool.
I think it's a prime example that you can see that Big Blue Nation cares about baseball.
Exactly.
They actually care about baseball.
Yes, football, yes, basketball.
But you're starting to see that baseball is just as important.
Well, you're right.
Those fans that are out there on the spur of the moment to go to Omaha, the turnout has been fantastic.
And then on the spur of the moment to do this autograph session and the crowd it was there yesterday, you're right.
It does kind of show their appreciation for what this team and what they've been able to do.
They care.
They care.
I don't know if we have to go to break, but I do have a question for you.
Maybe we can answer it after once we come back to the break.
I'm not going to be a Debbie Downer.
I'm not being a Debbie Downer.
But say Kentucky loses today.
What does that mean for the fan base in Kentucky baseball?
What do you take away from the season?
I want to hear Shannon's thoughts as well.
Shannon, you go first.
Well, I mean, first of all, I think the obvious thing is it's going to help with the recruiting, right?
When you're Mendi-owned, you can say we just made it to the college World Series to come be a part of this.
And you look at all the national attention that Kentucky baseball has gotten just from going to Omaha.
It's got to help recruiting it.
And then I think the good thing about Kentucky baseball being in the World Series, too, it's gained a lot of new fans, right?
I mean, if we're being real about it, including, I mean, we were always fans, but we're now learning this roster.
You know, like before Kentucky started going on this great run this season, you know, before the season started, how many players?
could you really name on the roster?
And now I think it's just shining a huge spotlight on Kentucky baseball.
So I think that's the main benefit.
I agree.
Even if they do lose today, which we all hope they don't,
I am still 100% super excited about what this baseball team has done.
They made the season they've had, made the College World Series as the number two overall seed.
Co-champs in the SEC for the second time in school history.
Coach of the year?
Coach of the year.
I mean, it does not take away.
If by some fluke they lose, it won't take away for me a bit about what this team has done this year and this baseball team.
This is still the best baseball team ever at the University of Kentucky.
They went to New Heights and it will forever be remembered as a great team regardless what happens today.
Forever be remembered and then you get to build on it for the next season.
You talk about what they did last season in the regional.
Yeah.
Now they made it to the College Royal Series.
What can they do next season?
Got to win it now.
Yeah, definitely.
They only have five wins to go.
So maybe they might win it this year, but just looking at it, you know, in the future terms, that's what it looks like.
So we are live at KS Bar and Grill.
We're going to have a big watch party here today.
We had a huge turnout on, what was I guess that was Monday night.
Was that?
Okay.
Monday night game, a Texas A&M game.
It was a huge turnout.
People come in.
Paul's here already wearing these blue and white, so he's ready to go.
At 1030, Jasper Johnson will be here.
Yes.
A budding superstar that is becoming a major superstar right in front of our eyes.
Local guy.
Local guy from Lexington.
He's going to be in here and sitting down with.
He just took an unofficial visit to Kentucky yesterday.
So we got the lot for him talking about.
Just got back from Argentina where he won a gold medal.
Man, he's racking up those visits.
He's been here a lot.
He's been here a lot.
So Jasper will be here at 1030, live here at the restaurant to talk to us.
And then at 1130, you arranged it.
Well, we're going to have Tyler Ullis on the phone.
My favorite UK player of all time.
Tyler Ullis.
Because he's now the head coach of TBT's team, La Familia.
Very special.
A lot of familiar is going to be, I can't wait the head on and interrupt when it starts.
It's going to be a very special time.
So we got a lot going on.
We want to hear from you as well.
859-280-2-8-7.
That's the Clark's Puppet Shop phone number, 859-2-80-2-8-7.
We'll take as many calls as we can today.
Big Day.
UK baseball team going to win two today.
We were right back.

Clark. Sometimes when we're in the
pursuit of the thing, we get
so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard
watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important
to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keir Gaines, is we have real conversations.

What's up, fam?
It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defining the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player.
they ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows.
Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective
on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because
when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reed. He has to
guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night
bases on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some
playoff history too.
Steve Nash will get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball.
Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Oh, yeah.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
American soccer is about to explode.
The World Cup is coming.
Ramel sending on to Ernie.
Score at the chip.
I'm Tab Ramos.
I'm Tom Boe.
On our podcast, Inside American Soccer, you'll get the real storylines.
I'm not worried about Policic.
I'm not worried about Balagan.
I'm not worried about McKinney.
My only concern is what happens in the back.
The biggest decisions.
If you're going to look at stats and numbers,
he has no shot at making this World Cup team.
And the truth about the U.S. national team.
It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarter of
finals or potentially a great run into the semifinals.
The World Cup is almost here.
Experience it all with us.

This is letting out our Whiskey Thief song of the day.
Already.
Yeah, anytime Shannon's going to break out a little hooting the blowfish, it's going to be the Whiskey Thief song of the day.
So our thanks to Whiskey Thief for us.
But yeah, this, you like Hootie the Blowfish, don't you?
I don't even know.
I know.
I knew you're going to say that.
Hold on.
Hold on.
Hold on.
You don't know Mario Houdi and the Blofish?
No, what is that?
Educate me.
Probably the greatest rock and roll band in the history of music.
I've heard this song.
I'm starting to hear it play a little bit longer.
I'm familiar with this song.
Now, Ryan has an unhealthy obsession with Darius Rucker,
but Hootie and the Blowfish, to their credit, were a huge band in the 90s,
which you were probably not even born when this album came out.
99, so.
Oh, okay.
were yeah
Shannon I need to
no he wasn't he wasn't born if he was born in 99
99 yeah I can correct you
yeah not one of the best
the best rock and roll band
okay yeah yeah yeah so
I think maybe we should play hooting the blowfish
every break today Shannon
just to educate Mario
so that's your excuse
that's the reason you want me to play not just because you love
hooting the blowfish
to educate Mario
859-29-2802 287
that's the Clark's Publish Shop phone number we got a couple people
one board we do want to say we had this cancel singo last night yeah we had our first ever singo

canceled so so singo will be next tuesday i'm excited for singo i'm very excited i want to
participate in sing usually i don't participate because i'm usually doing all the content creation stuff
yeah i want to participate if i can do both i want to do both because you witnessed it you went to
singo at chichapan brewery and georgetown yeah so this will be on july i mean on june 25th next
tuesday we'll do singo i'll be there now tomorrow this is wednesday yeah tomorrow
thursday we have uk tvia night yeah you got your questions ready to go it'll be in the same format
as Matt's trivia, where there's three rounds, five questions in each round, and then like a bonus question.
So it's ready to go.
Now, are these questions hard as Matt's questions?
Because Matt's known that have very hard trivia questions.
What's the trivia questions looking like for you, right?
Well, it's, I mean, it's U.K. sports.
It's not just basketball.
It's primarily basketball, but there's other sports mixed in a little bit.
Some baseball.
Maybe a little UK women's basketball, you know?
Cool.
Yeah, so that's Thursday night here at 7 o'clock UK trivia night.
And rumor has it, though, that Corey Price may be here.
He's got to be there.
He's got to be there.
If he wins, I mean, he's got to be the favorite coming in.
He shows up, so.
Can't use Google for that, though.
Cannot use Google for it.
We catch you on your phone.
You're out.
859-2-287.
Who's our first caller, Shannon?
Alan.
Alan, go ahead, Alan.
I wanted to say just a couple of quick things and then call my shot for today.
The baseball team, I've been around ball and umpired.
coached and and an odd thing happens once in a double elimination tournament that a team loses
they suddenly have all the pressure off of them now and i know it seems like well they got to win
but you know it's like they get that first loss out of the way and they and they're just a different
team a lot of times they just they play without being scared and i think that's going to happen
and i think that uh they're going to they're going to go in there today and i and i and i think a lot of times
when a team has all this in front of them, they just meet the challenge.
And I think the cats are going to do that today.
And I'm calling my shot with, I know Shannon said they were going to win it all.
I agree with Shannon.
I think they're going to win it all.
And I believe in the cats.
Go cats.
Appreciate it.
Good phone call.
Nice, Island.
Good phone call.
I just got an update, Shannon.
A little scout report for our buddy Phil, who's out in Omaha.
UK will be the visitors this game.
Okay.
And the wind is blowing out.
for the first time it's done that all week.
So it's a lot of win.
A lot of win.
Now here's another switch, Shannon.
In the batting order, they have switched Berks, who's been batting third,
with Ryan Nicholson, who's been batting six.
They flip-flopped him.
So Ryan Nicholson is batting third, and Devin Burks is batting six today.
Adjustments.
It's a little adjustments.
I kind of like being the visiting team here.
You know, you have a chance to come out and jump on them early, you know,
build up a little confidence and, you know, make the opposing team.
Florida be on their heels from the very start of the game.
So I kind of like being the visitors today.
And sometimes just mixing up and line up a little bit,
sometimes gives you a little extra juice sometimes.
Definitely.
I'm sure it would help.
I loved what Alan kind of said.
He said that Kentucky baseball typically bounces back after losses.
I think they're going to bounce back tonight.
Yeah.
The tough part about it, you said they're going to be playing twice today.
If they win against Florida, they'll play against Texas A&M.
Is that right?
Correct.
Yeah.
The winner of this Florida,
Kentucky game gets Texas A&M tonight at 7?
Good news.
Good news is that you don't play Texas A&M right off the bat.
You play Florida.
You've had success against Florida in the past.
And the bad news is that you're going to run into the Texas A&M.
Once again, we know the time that they have.
859-2-2-287.
Who's next, Shannon?
Will.
Will. Go ahead, Will.
Gentlemen, in the College World Series, you can only activate 27 on your roster.
So they restrict you to 27, Kentucky, carry.
14 positional players and 13 pitchers.
And to quote, the great Ernie Banks, let's play two.
Very good, that's right.
Let's play two today.
That answers your question, Mario.
There's 13 pitchers that they got to carry up on the World Series roster.
And Shannon, they may use every one of them today if they have to.
Johnny Fullstaff today.
Yeah, playing a doubleheader like that, you may have to.
So, you know, it's winner.
Winner go home.
You got to throw everybody out there and see what happens.
You know, Texas A&M game.
They didn't start their ace in the first game, started him for the game against Kentucky,
and it paid off.
It was a gamble for them that paid off.
Well, now, like Shannon said, maybe Poozer, you've got to bring him in.
Maybe tonight if you need an arm, you can't gamble for tomorrow.
You've got to win today.
Yeah, biggest game in the season right here.
It's coming up.
859-2-87.
Who's next, Shannon?
Wally.
Wally.
Go ahead, Wally.
Well, actually, I had a great trivia question for you for Thursday, but I was going
to give it to you off the air.
because it'll be a real stumper if you'd like to use it.
Well, you can get it right now.
Yeah, I want to hear it.
Yeah, we may be able to get this.
Well, and it may be more widely known in the jokes on me,
but Adolf Rup, I'm sure you were aware, also was in the cattle business.
Yes.
Do you know what breed he raised?
Oh, I've heard this.
I've heard, I've heard, I've heard this.
That's the main reason he didn't take the job at Duke,
because he had his cattle farm here.
I didn't know.
Duke was trying to get him.
Oh, yeah.
Should have saved it for Thursday.
But my grandfather actually bought some from him.
If you want me, I can tell you, unless you don't look it up.
No, go ahead and tell us.
Herford.
Herford cows.
That's right.
I had heard that.
Yes, sir.
I don't.
Where was the farm here in Fayette County?
Was it in Fayette County somewhere?
He hung up.
Oh, he hung up.
I don't know if I'm sure exactly where his farm was, but when we would get that, too.
859-2-802-287 we got another one shannon let's go to freebird free bird free bird
guys how we doing what's up super mario what's up man what's going on you ready for today
i'm getting ready dude hey got a question uh i know during the regular season uh when they play a double
hitter they play seven innings are they playing seven innings today since it's a college world
series i bet not i bet they play nine yeah they'll play nine today at this level probably uh
they're probably going to squeeze it all in.
You said that this can last five hours.
Well, I was joking.
It'll be a long game, I think, with a lot of pitching changes
and a lot of run score, I think.
But, yeah, they'll play nine and a thing.
It could be a long day for the UK baseball team
if they're playing two today.
If anybody can do it, UK can do it.
I can do it.
All right, appreciate it, Freebird.
Thanks for the phone call.
All right, we're getting ready to take our break.
We come back.
He's here.
Jasper Johnson is here.
Look at it.
Got his Team USA hoodie on.
He just won a gold medal.
in Argentina for playing for Team USA.
That's crazy.
It's insane.
Little Jasper Johnson.
I knew him when he was born.
Now look at him.
He's his basketball superstar.
Just had an unofficial visit with Kentucky,
so we'll kind of get the lowdown on where he is
with his recruitment and everything.
But it'd be enjoyed to talk to him sitting in a little bit.
And now, here's a little more hoody to blowfish.
That's Darius.
Oh, it is Darius.
You're right back.
That's my guy.
We'll be right back.

And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good

Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves,
I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us a lot.
everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nass would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers,
why he got the ball.
Like, you go through a training camp with that, I said,
you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court,
and you're going to get the ball.

Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
All right, welcome back. Live at K.
KAS Bar and Grill today as Kentucky baseball getting ready to play Florida in an
elimination game out the college world series but kind of an exciting day Mario we got a
superstar right next to me man how about that I'm pumped Jasper Johnson joins us
just got back from Argentina after winning a gold medal with Team USA man
congratulations how was all that you it was great it was great experience a great
opportunity to be able to you know go overseas and play for my country and bring
back the gold medal now I
I may be wrong on this, but I think you're the only guy from Lexington ever to play for Team USA.
History.
We've had guys from University of Kentucky, but not from the city of Lexington.
You are the first one.
I mean, that's awesome, man.
I'm so proud of you.
Thank you.
I ain't know that.
I didn't even know that.
Yeah, I'm fairly certain.
You said you knew Jasper since he was little, right?
I'm telling you.
Well, I've known his mom and dad since they were in high school.
Okay.
We go way back.
I got some great stories to tell you.
We'll get to that later, though.
But it's good.
When you got ready to load up and go to Argentina, I mean, did you kind of have a little pinch me moment?
Like, is this for real?
Are we really doing this?
Yeah, definitely.
I mean, me growing up, I never thought, like, you could really go and play for a team USA until, like, you know, maybe you get to the NBA or things like that.
But, I mean, me being able to, you know, go through the tryouts and make each finalist list.
And hearing my name being called that I made the team, it was a great opportunity.
It was a blessing.
So you're in Argentina, Jasper.
I got to ask you, was there anything that shocked you out there?
Just being out there.
It's going to be on and off the court.
What was that like?
Yeah, I mean, the people, too, that's like we was like celebrities down there.
So, I mean, that part was pretty cool.
And I remember, you know, I was walking.
We was walking around, like, the little area.
And, I mean, we was seeing some kids and things like that, signing autographs and stuff.
And I seen, like, some little kid had, like, a Kentucky shirt on.
Oh, Kentucky's everywhere.
That's cool.
It's crazy seeing that, you know, people watch our sport over here and still love it down there.
So I asked you, did you get to do some touristy things, or was it all basketball down there?
Yeah, we did some, we were like a little tour bus around the area for a couple hours.
We got to visit this soccer museum and see some different things because, you know,
Leon Messey is from there, so seeing a couple of his accomplishments and things like that, so it was cool.
Now, I know you have another local guy, Malachi Marino who also played with you.
Talk about like the relationship that you guys kind of had, you know, bonded over there while playing for USA.
It was good.
But, you know, me and Malley coming from Kentucky, so, you know, trying to represent as best as we can.
You know, you know, competing at a high level, just having fun.
But, I mean, our relationship has been pretty good.
I've known him for a long time.
So, I mean, seeing him and where he is now and seeing me where I am is a good thing.
Cool story.
Yeah, cool for sure.
So, you know, for those who don't know, you grew up here in Lexington, went to Southern Middle School,
played a couple years at Woodford County.
Now you're at Link Academy playing in what cities at Missouri?
Branson.
Branson, Missouri.
Oh, you're doing all the honky talking in Branson and go get your old time.
photo on your taffy and everything down there. So this is, you kind of just exploded in the last
several months on the recruiting scene. What do you attribute that to? Really just working. I mean,
me and my dad been in the gym. And since I was a little kid and, you know, my grandfather
being on me about it, you know, just giving me a message and seeing what I could really do
with myself if I just keep working. So, I mean, staying dedicated to that and seeing where I can
go now. It's a blessing. I see the clips on YouTube. I see it.
all over my social media Jasper Johnson huge fan and you talked about the work talk about can you
explain what does it look like what did your training regimen what does it look like for you every
single day um so i mean normally i wake up probably like 5 5 30 uh you know go to the gym shoot
get a couple shots of a couple hundred shots of um come back home you know eat breakfast
sleep uh i'll have to do like my agility strengthening training so lifting and things like that and
stretching right and then I probably rest again and then probably go back and
shoot later at night and get some more so lot of work you know work out it's a lot of
work so yesterday you had an unofficial visit with Kentucky can you feel comfortable
enough talking about that okay how did it go and what did you what did you like what
did you didn't talk to coach Pope about I liked it a lot I mean coach Pope you
know he really gave me a message that you know he really is you know prioritizing me
you know that he wants to coach me but I mean I really like to get to see in their
to see them practice, seeing a lot of new places.
They've seen a whole new team.
I'd be very interested to see how they do this season,
but I really enjoyed my visit.
So what factors would you say, obviously you're still in the midst of your recruiting process,
what factors would you say is going to be important to you when choosing your college?
What are some of those factors to you, your family, what does that look like?
Really a program that's the best fit for me, somewhere where I can go and make.
mistakes and grow from them. Coaches staff that really trust and believes in me
and I know Coach Pope was talking to me yesterday and he was saying that you know
like he feels like I'm one of the best scores if not the best score in the country so
you know his offense and that he's set up you know he's been trying to you know
see if I can fit into that and he thinks I can so I mean him telling me I can come in
there and impact day one it means a lot they don't need to sell you on what
Kentucky basketball is all about I mean you lived it I mean your dad's one of the
best defensive players to ever play football here your uncle
Eric, one of the few guys to start on an offensive line and the defensive line in Kentucky.
Your grandpa, Alves, where was on the staff at Kentucky.
Oh, wow.
I mean, you grew up knowing what Kentucky is about.
They don't need to sell you on that, do they?
No, they don't.
Not at all.
So what are you looking for then when you're trying to evaluate your schools?
I mean, I know each school has a different pitch.
Each school has, you know, something new to offer.
So, I mean, really just staying patient with my decision.
I mean, making sure that whenever I make the time to make my decision,
not making the right choice for me.
So, I mean, there's a lot that goes into it, but I mean, I'm just being patient about it and
praying about it.
What are some of your other visits you've got?
Can you talk about that?
Who's coming up?
I take a visit to Alabama this weekend.
I go to Illinois, I think Monday and Tuesday right after that.
And I'm not sure in the future after that, but I mean, I have those two visits plan right now.
Who else have you been to?
I've been to North Carolina.
I've been to Missouri, West Virginia, Auburn.
I've been to a couple schools, officially and officially.
Well, we've got to take our break right now to get ready for the baseball broadcast.
But if you want to listen to the rest of our interview with Jasper Johnson,
you have to switch to 1240 WSFC AM in Somerset.
We'll be with KSR will be streaming on that channel
because when we leave you, when we come back on WLAP and WKRD,
it'll be the UK baseball games.
We'll take our break.
We have a lot more with Jasper Johnson.
Come back here at KS Bar and Grill.
We're right back.

I guarantee he doesn't know who that is.
His mom and dad may have listened to Hooting the Blowfish.
Have you heard of you?
No, say, I don't know nothing about this.
Yeah, Naoki knows who do you the blowfish.
Welcome back.
Ryan Lemon, Mario, Super Mario Maitland,
and we're joined by Jasper Johnson here.
For those of you are trying to listen to the UK baseball game.
Again, you have to switch to WLAP or WKRD.
If you're listening to KSR, streaming,
obviously you're 1240 WSFC and Somerset, so we'll get ready for the baseball game.
Josh, we talked to you a lot about, you know, your recruiting and playing for Team USA and Argentina.
Have you enjoyed the recruiting process or is it kind of stressing you out?
Do you wish it would be over and how do you finally decide what you're going to do?
Yeah, I mean, I've been enjoying it.
I mean, me as a little kid, you know, looking up seeing,
really wanting this opportunity to be able to happen.
So, I mean, now that I'm here and having these opportunities to talk to these different coaches
and schools like that.
I mean, I've been really enjoying the process.
You talked about the process and the opportunity,
and you have the opportunity that a lot of kids don't necessarily have,
but that comes with pressure too.
How do you necessarily, you know,
balance the pressure and handle the expectations
and the pressure being such a five-star recruit?
I really don't really look into the pressure that much.
I mean, I know I'm in this position for a reason,
so, I mean, I feel like if I keep doing what I'm doing,
working out and staying committed to a grind,
I feel like I'll be good at whatever I do for sure you know Coach Cal started recruiting you before he left here
I was there when he came over to watch you play at Woodford County in the Alvis Johnson Classic
Dude, dude you couldn't miss that day I couldn't I mean you could not miss 10 threes
10 of 11 right we 10 of 11 from threes and I every time you'd hit one I'd look over at cow and he would just be smiling
Did you have a good relationship with coach cow? Yeah, yeah I did
But, I mean, he talked to me since my sophomore season.
So, I mean, he's been really interested in me and he was recruiting me then.
So, I mean, we built a good relationship.
But, I mean, seeing him leave was really a surprise to me.
But, I mean, we still can communicate to each other.
And if I heard the story right, Orlando Antigua was, like, trying to be your best friend.
Like, he loved you.
He wanted you so bad.
Yeah, he did.
Yeah.
I mean, I know he is at Illinois.
So I go up and see him Monday and Tuesday.
So, I mean, yeah, we got really close.
me and Coach Orlando. Is that the reason you're going to Illinois just because of him?
Yeah, definitely. I mean, I like the program as well, but I mean, him being there, you know,
gives him a plus for sure. Yeah, we were really close. You know I got the basketball questions.
I'm a huge basketball fan, Jasper. And, you know, you talked about, you know, the game you had at
Wilford County. And I'm seeing you just like, you kind of remind me of James Harden a little bit,
and I'll see a little bit of DeAngelo Russell in your game here and there. Who do you model your game after?
I want to ask you that. I mean, I don't really model my.
game after anybody i say but i mean me just being a basketball fan as well watching the game i mean
i can always pick up some things from here and here and there and different players but uh i mean really uh i mean
also like de angela russell you know me and him pretty close little guy yeah yeah he work out a couple
times and things like that he calls me checks in on me so i mean i say him if anybody cool you know i i
was trying to compare you to james hard and i said roger hardon roger hard james hard yeah james hard and i
said Roger Harden.
Roger Harden's a little white guy that played the UK in like the 80s.
Not, and he's right-handed.
I'm trying to say James, you are left-handed, he's left-handed.
But your game is a lot of him.
You like the little shifty, shifty, shaking, baked stuff and pop and hit it right in your eye kind of game.
You agree with that?
Yeah, for sure.
I mean, anything I can do to create a space and create offense, I mean, that's what I'm
really good at.
So, I mean, doing whatever I can't be creative on the court, he just helps me play.
Did you hate to give up football?
I mean, you used to be a big football guy.
you grew up in a football family was that kind of tough to give up football i mean i really enjoyed
playing football but i mean my my grandfather i mean it was one game uh when i was at woofer
you know it was playing and i think uh my receiver had caught a pass i mean we were playing man the
whole game and i mean like the next play i think he got like a like a sweep or something and i
had hit him like real hard and then my granddad was like after the game was like no i think
you're gonna have to be done playing football now but it's it's over it so i mean yeah i mean it was good though i
I enjoy playing football.
I know you understand how much your dad meant to, not just the Harrisburg community,
but for the state of Kentucky.
You know, here's a local kid, national defensive player of the year, small town,
Harrisburg, Kentucky.
By the way, the day, you probably heard this story, the day he committed to the UK,
we had like two feet of snow that night.
It was awful.
We had to drive from Lexington down to Harrisburg, and it was two feet.
That was the famous dusting of snow in Lexington that night.
And it was two feet of snow to go down there.
I mean, I know he's your dad, but do you understand, like, really how great of a...
History.
The history he's got playing at Kentucky.
Nah, don't gas him over too much about it.
You'll stop hearing about it.
But, no, I know he was pretty good.
He was pretty good.
One of the best defensive players ever played in Kentucky.
Yeah.
So I know, so that's the football.
You grew up in a football family.
Yeah, I did.
I mean him, my uncles, both on my mom's side in my house.
Yeah. I mean, growing up in a football family, I mean, they still talk to me about it saying I'm soft and things like that.
Nah, that is what it is. What about Big Brother? He's sitting over here. He, you know, he played college football, so.
Football family. He's trying to play me as well in basketball. Like, when we work out in the mornings, you know, he thinks he's big bro. No, I'm really good. Nah.
Gotta let him know, right? You got to let him know, man. You talked about football. I want to kind of go back to basketball a little bit and ask you about the necessarily parts of the,
parts of your game that you want to improve on.
It's a huge summer for you.
What are some things that you're looking to improve on going into your last season?
Really growing my IQ, like I said, watching the game, learning some different things.
I know the game changes overtime rapidly, so, I mean, me being able to adjust and play through
different things.
But one thing that I'm really working on now was, you know, my physicality.
So I feel like whenever I go to college, I can try to prepare myself and hopefully
give myself the best opportunity I can to, you know, be able to get drafted.
Boys to men.
You're playing the high school kids.
It's a different level, different level, but I love to hear that.
So I know what, you have kind of in your mind got a top 10 list or a top five list?
Do you kind of already kind of know what you're thinking?
Yeah, I mean, I created a top 10 not too long ago a couple months ago.
I mean, I was really planning on, you know, committing this summer.
But, you know, with all the coaching changes and things like that, I mean, I had to reopen it, you know,
take some visits to different programs where different coaches have landed and things like that.
But, I mean, yeah, I kind of know where a couple schools that, you know, I will be considering when I get down to cut my list.
Now, there was some reports that you may reclassify back to 2024.
That is not accurate, right?
I mean, it was an option, definitely.
But, I mean, as it right now, I don't think I do that, you know, I mean, just trying to, you know, get as many accolades as I can and really enjoy the high school game while I was here.
So you know, you know what I love about this kid already?
You know, this is my first time meeting him, right?
he's taking his time in the recruiting process.
As much as I want to see him in the Kentucky Wildcats uniform,
he's taking his time.
I got to give him respect for that.
I like that, Jasper.
So what is next for you this year?
Where will you play this year?
Can you talk about that?
Yeah, I mean, I had a good season at Link Academy last season,
but I mean, our head coach, Coach Bill left.
You know, he's at Baylor now.
So I'm not really sure if I'll be going back there or night.
I mean, I have a couple options, you know,
maybe even coming back, you know,
trying to play down here in Worford County again, but, I mean, I don't know as right now.
We talked about that this week.
The high school memories you make with your high school teammates, sometimes those
are going to be your best.
No matter what you do in college or pro, that's your best memories.
Yeah, definitely.
I mean, it's a great time.
I enjoy my season at Link.
I mean, me being one of the younger players on the team and competing with the older
players and things like that.
But, I mean, seeing them in college now at different locations and still communicating
with them, I mean, it's good to have.
When do you need to make that decision?
Like, is it coming up or do you?
Not really too soon, but, I mean, I want to, you know,
try to make my decision before, I say before,
before April or July, sometimes this month maybe.
I'm not sure.
I'm not talking about your decision where to play.
College?
No, college, high school.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Sometimes soon, pretty soon, a couple weeks or a month or so.
You think that's got to be coming up?
Yeah.
But then, you know, as far as you making a decision,
you said originally you maybe wanted to make it.
the summer you're thinking maybe next spring now after the season taking this time
taking the time well that just means all the coaches will be just keep coming around
and he's watching you play yeah yeah is is coach Cal keep recruiting you from
Arkansas yeah he is uh coach Cal and coach Chen you know them making their
Swiss to go to Arkansas I mean yeah they still contacted me trying to get me to go on
to visit up there so Matt might have to plan that soon and you know just building our
relationship as well now I'll go back to your dad again you know it was a time
he almost played basketball Kentucky, too.
Yeah, yeah.
Is it true?
There is even a jersey, a framed jersey with Johnson 52 on it?
It does, yep, right at home.
A Kentucky basketball jersey that they were going to give him to play.
Yep, all that.
For Tubby Smith.
I don't see it, though.
Like, when we work out, he tried to play me as well.
Nah, it don't go too good for him.
It doesn't go good for him.
He scored three times on me.
He won't let it.
He scored three times, huh?
Well, that, you know, he was after the football season,
Tubby had a uniform for him to play basketball.
at Kentucky that one season and football obviously was his future so he didn't play
it would have been crazy I think he would yeah do what he did out there with so
there with with Coach Pope now recruit you is is he the one you're the closest to
or is this one of the assistant coaches talking to you mostly I mean I've talked to
all the position coaches there I mean each one has reached out to me you know
takes me or call me individually but I mean I feel like Coach Pope is really putting
in the effort to you know try to try to recruit me himself really I mean he calls me
FaceTime me a lot. He actually came to Argentina to watch the games and see me play.
So I mean see him playing that effort. I mean it really means a lot. It shows a lot.
I didn't realize that so he came to watch you came all the way to all
Australia. Wow. Yeah. That's pretty good recruiting visit right there.
I know he was down there in Mexico or something. Spain or somewhere.
Posting on social media. Yeah down there somewhere. Well listen man, best of luck to you.
Thank you. You represent Lexington very well, Southern Middle School, Woodford
County High School, University of Kentucky for family here.
Very proud of you, dude.
To see you grow up and blossom like you have as a player here.
We wish you nothing but the best.
All the best.
All the best, man.
Thank you for coming off.
Jasper Johnson.
All right.
Well, get ready to take our break because the UK baseball team is about to play, Shannon.
We're just a couple minutes away from first pitch now, I believe, right?
That's right.
I want to be multitasking, trying to host this show and also trying to watch the game at the same time.
So, yeah, we're just about five minutes away, I think, from first pitch.
Well, we've got the game on here at KS Bar and Grill.
We invite everybody to come out here.
It's Juneteenth.
Most people aren't working today, so come on out.
Filling up.
Filling up.
Have lunch with us.
Paul's here for crying out loud, so we'll get ready for Kentucky.
Look at that shirt.
And Florida, first game, I mean, elimination game for the UK baseball team.
Big day today.
Big day to day.
They win.
They play again tonight at 7 o'clock.
So that's kind of crazy.
All right, we come back.
Even though the baseball game is going to be going on, Taylor County, Shannon, on deck.
You do your Taylor County homework?
Of course.
Of course.
Yeah, I'm ready to go.

We'll get to them.
We come back.
Ryan, Mario, Shannon the dude, man.
Appreciate you, Jackson, joining us.
We have Tyler.
