This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Now, here's Matt Jones.
All right, good morning, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,
and welcome to this Thursday edition of Kentucky Sports Radio.
It is Thursday, June 20th.
First day of summer, Ryan Lemon, Shannon the Dude,
Billy Rutledge, and Super Mario Maitland all here today.
And as always, I take a sports.
radio sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office called T.J.
and he'll make them pay.
Hill Make them pay. By the end of the day, we'll have our Whiskey Thief Song of the Day.
We'll have our Clark's Pump and Shop. No.
Our Kentucky branded text of the day.
By the end of the summer, you're going to get this right.
And the Don Franklin call today.
It's the Clark's Pump and Shop phone line.
There you go, right.
To get the Don Franklin call today.
So the phone number is 859-280-287.
That's 859-280-cats.
Well, guys, look, first day of summer.
It's supposed to be the hottest day of the year.
you know, they say when it's the first day of summer.
So why not do the show outside?
So ladies and gentlemen, welcome to my backyard by my pool for this edition of Kentucky Sports Radio.
Well, we appreciate the invite.
You've got quite a nice backyard.
You've got the hot tub with the waterfall.
You get the pool.
Thanks to CNS pools.
And thanks to you for having us out here.
Like you said, longest day of the year.
So you could be out here at, you know, 10 o'clock tonight.
The sun will still be up.
It is another stop on our KSR Summer Business Spotlight Series.
where we're going to these pop-up shows throughout the summer.
CNS pools wanted to do a show, Billy.
Why not the perfect place?
They designed my pool.
They installed my pool.
Everything you see here is because of CNS pools.
Perfect way to show off what they do by doing the show here in my backyard.
Absolutely.
They've got discounts on services and products until the end of June.
So if you're looking to maybe get your pool checked or to get a new pool, you should check them out.
You've got the basketball hoop set up.
You know, I've heard a lot about your relationship with your neighbors, Ryan.
This is my first time being out here.
Has that improved at all over the last year or so?
Drastically improved.
It's improved because you ran them out of the neighborhood.
That's right.
They left.
You ran them out of town.
I think when they show that house, that's the caveat,
they're like, you realize here, this guy is a party animal.
It's like Van Wilder.
It's like Project X over here.
It's going crazy.
Every night there's like boom, chica boom, chikaboo,
and there's like lights flashing everywhere.
It's a light show.
It's like a kiss concert every night.
So you have to buy with caution if you buy that house or any of these houses, right?
Well, you know, you're not too far off.
There are lights in the pool.
You can have them light up.
I've got my stereo system over there thanks to 46 solutions.
And the poor couple that lived right behind me, they only lasted about a year.
I can't blow it.
I got to ask you, though, is your entire house sponsored?
Like the Pools, the CNS Pools, 46 Solutions down here in the basement?
Is anything that's like not sponsored out here?
Well, and solid platinum sponsors my bedroom.
There you go.
He's a walking advertisement.
He's like a walking NASCAR.
We do have an audience on this side.
Look, there's some kids.
over there watching us. They're probably wondering, what are those guys doing over there
back by that pool? I was asking you, like, are they fans of the show? Do they realize
they live next to a radio host? I don't know them. Well, maybe a good time to
go introduce yourself during the break. So, I got to tell you, before we go
any further here, everybody here is sitting down. Yes, we all have a nice comfy chair.
Except for me, because you're your little yapper of a dog. Marley,
when I got up to go to the restroom, I come back and she is right there in my chair.
Mario, you snooze, you lose.
She looks comfy, too.
Should I put the headsets?
Should I put the headsets on her and see if she's got something she wants to say?
She basically runs this house.
I can tell.
Yeah, there's no doubt about it.
Very territorial.
Stolen your chair.
It's funny, the smallest dog is the most territorial.
Absolutely.
Like small dogs.
Small dog syndrome.
Big bark, that's right.
Well, if you'd like to sit down, we could probably talk to her and convince her to
give her.
I'm afraid to touch Marley.
Like, she might just bite my finger off.
Come here, Marley.
I'm not like my...
See, there you go.
There you go.
The poor dog to lose your seat.
Poor Shannon.
So we'll tell you more about the CNS pools as we go out today.
You know, usually we tell people, Shannon, on these pop-up shows.
We don't tell you where we're going to be until we start the show.
Right.
I mean, I just told you we're at my house.
So we can't say no if you want to come and see the pool.
Yeah.
We're not encouraging people, but we can't say no.
You're not encouraging, but you're not discouraging.
There we go.
Trust me, I can tell you this.
We don't have to give the address.
People can find out where you live.
I found out that Google has a lot of information.
Believe it or not.
And people know where I live, or at least lived.
You get foreign money all the time.
I still, I mean, four years later, I am still getting foreign money sent to me from all over the country.
And so trust me, if they want to find out where you live, they'll find out.
So we're not telling you exactly where I live, but really seriously, if you're somebody that wants to think about putting in a pool,
come on by.
CNS pools come on by and you kind of see their work up close and personal.
I am a little jealous of your backyard.
I wish that I had this in my bike yard.
So I would say that anybody who wants this, CNS pools can hook you up.
Can hook you up.
Yeah.
Especially with the, you know, it's like a lagoon pool.
You know, this was, we designed it ourselves.
Yeah.
It's like a lagoon pool.
And it's like the planes that fly over.
If you look down on it, they say it looks like kind of Mickey Mouse's face.
And do you come out?
Oh, is that right?
Is that right?
And do you come out like the creature from the black lagoon?
Yes.
Yeah, sometimes.
A hot tub with a gas furnace so we can heat it up in like about, you know, five, ten minutes.
That's cool.
Yeah.
Now, I'm just curious.
You have a privacy fence, which is about what, eight foot tall, something like that?
The problem is your neighbors all have, like, two-story houses and can easily see into your backyard.
And I'm sure that when you built this prophecy fence, you had in mind, you know, that you could go skinny-dipping if you wanted to.
But I'm just wondering, like, the fact that these people can see over your privacy fence, does that stop you at all from?
skinny dipping occasionally or he just kind of go with it?
Absolutely not.
It does not stop me even a little bit.
I didn't think so.
He says that with children watching us right over there.
Right over there yonder.
You don't want to, at nighttime, it gets very dark.
If you don't turn the lights on, it is pretty dark back here.
Yeah.
So you can maybe get away with a thing or two now and then, you know?
Sounds like somebody's speaking from experience.
All right.
We'll leave that at there.
All right.
So we'll tell you more about CNS pools as we go along.
But we've got to start the show, obviously, today with what happened yesterday with the UK baseball team.
kind of an unfortunate ending to a fantastic, great season,
one that will be remembered forever.
I mean, it's the greatest season in UK baseball history,
making the college world series for the first time,
hosting a Super Regional for the first time,
going to a Super Regional back-to-back years for the first time.
I mean, you can never take away what this team did,
but after the first inning yesterday, game over.
Yeah, Kentucky jumped up 1-0.
It looked like they came to play, but then unfortunately,
Nyman couldn't get past a third of an inning, and then it was 7 to 1,
and it just kind of got worse from there.
But we talked about this on the pre-show, and you guys chime in.
But you want to remember the ride that got you there, right?
That's the thing that you should remember.
The school record 46 wins and all the fun that this team had and all the fun that the fans had watching this team.
So I think that's what you want to take away.
And obviously it's going to help with recruiting.
You knocked down the door.
You paved the way for future Kentucky baseball teams, knowing that now getting to the college
World Series is not impossible. We've already done that. We've done it before. And now you take this,
you use this as leverage for recruiting, and hopefully you're going to see them back next year.
You've laid down the foundation. You're exactly right. She's 46 wins for this Kentucky
baseball team. It really is incredible. I got to work a lot of the games this year. I was on
the game yesterday, and I told Darren and Keith I really enjoyed their calls over these last
couple of weeks. It's been a lot of fun to jump on the bandwagon. I think we were honest, knowing
that we didn't know all the players on the roster over the last couple years or so, but we've
come to love and adopt this team over the last couple years.
And Mario, I know you've been out at Kentucky Pride Park a couple times this year.
The environments were incredible.
They were building bleachers so more people could show up.
Definitely, Billy.
I would say this is just a benchmark of what's going to happen.
When you look five years later and you look back, you're going to know that this whole season was just a benchmark.
K-stars Daniel Hager said the same thing.
He said this is just going to be a benchmark.
We're going to look back at this and say, man, this was a special season, but it was just the beginning.
And I think this definitely was just the beginning for Kentucky baseball.
Yesterday, we had a great crowd at KS Bar for the watch party.
After it got rained out Tuesday night.
I had the early game yesterday.
But Mario was there with me.
When the dude from Florida hit the Grand Slam, it was like the wind got sucked out of the restaurant.
It was quiet.
It was very quiet.
Yeah.
So it was an unfortunate ending, but it was a fantastic great season.
If you didn't hear Texas A&M shut out Florida last night.
So it's Tennessee and Texas A&M playing a best two out of three
in all SEC World Series final, Shannon.
Who do you got there?
You think Tennessee ends up winning this thing?
Texas A&M looks really, really strong, though, too.
Yeah, they're good, too.
It's going to be a good series.
I mean, I wish Kentucky were there, but, I mean, again,
SEC is the toughest baseball conference in the nation.
There's no doubt about it.
And Kentucky, you know, for the most part throughout the season,
stood toe-to-to-to-to-to with all those teams,
and that's something to be proud of.
Since the season's over,
Well, what's everybody's favorite moment from this season, from Kentucky baseball?
What's your favorite moment, guys?
Wow, that's a good question.
I know mine right off the bat.
What, the walk-off in the World Series?
McCarthy slide into home play.
Oh, yeah.
Scoring from second base on a wild pitch, strike three, and the Pete Rose slide into home plate.
That's my lasting memory, I think, of what this season, what they embody.
That really is a good one.
I think you're right, though, Billy, the walk-off against NC State was great.
The call was great for that, too.
Daily wins it.
Daily wins it.
That was a moment.
I think I will look back years from now as, well, you guys already talked about being like a tone setter and laying the foundation.
I think not only to go to Omaha, but to win that game.
And I think that was a big victory for the cats.
I think I'm just going to miss the whole getting weird ideas that they do.
You know, the bubble gum, pink hats.
Favorite moment probably is when Coach Mingeon got the, the Gatorade bucket got thrown on him when they won the game.
I thought that was a pretty special moment.
But that's for me.
I got to go with that one.
But they've definitely found their brand, what you say?
No doubt.
Being this fun style of team,
team that plays aggressive,
forces the defense to make errors,
you know, make mistakes.
I think that's what makes this team so exciting.
Billy, we won't see the Spider-Man.
The memes.
Yeah, we won't see that anymore.
The fun and the dugout.
Maybe that carries over,
but, you know, you don't want to replicate something that,
you know, that's so hard to replicate.
But, you know, this has been a really,
exciting run and Nick Mingeon was coached for his job just two years ago.
I mean, remember that it was really a struggle out of the gate after the initial success in 2017,
but now to go to back-to-back Super Regionalals to host the Super Regional this year,
the future's bright when you can attack the transfer portal like he has over the last couple years.
You've got to think, too, the attendance is going to be great.
Absolutely.
For carryover for next season based off what we just saw.
And not only is Minjeon kind of creating a legacy for himself, UK baseball,
I have to say this.
He's creating a legacy for him off the baseball field
because last Sunday morning in my church,
which is right across the street, right there,
Center Point Christian Church,
the pastor, Ethan, talked about the message
that Mignione is relaying.
You know, after they win, a big game, he drops to a knee.
After he will beat NC State to walk off, he dropped to a knee.
And in the post-game press conference,
he can, you know, hey, only God can write this story.
His press conferences are gold.
They are gold.
And his testimony, I think, is really been enduring to a lot of fans.
You know, it's almost refreshing to see a coach not afraid to share his testimony.
Did you guys see when they came back from Omaha, a whole bunch of Big Booth Nation showed up in front of the KPP.
And, you know, it was a, I don't know if you guys seen the videos and the pictures, but a whole bunch of Kentucky fans showed up.
They came off the bus.
It was like a sunset.
It was just like a movie, basically, a movie ending to a great movie.
I enjoyed it.
You're right, Ryan.
I mean, that can be powerful to a lot of people.
And he talked about it in his postgame yesterday, how there's a sign in the Kentucky facility that says Road to Omaha.
And he would beat on that sign every time he passed it.
And now that you've knocked over that barrier, it's something that those guys will be remembered for.
And you're going to go up on that wall.
And you're going to be the standard for this program for years to come.
But what you're saying, I think, resonates with a lot of people.
It really does.
He talked about how it was the best week of his life.
They won the region tournament and his son got baptized all in the same week.
So just I think, like you said, Billy, two years ago he was almost dead man walking.
His job was on the line.
He made the big run.
And now look where we are.
praising him as one of the, he was the college baseball coach of the year in the country.
That's pretty impressive.
But he's touched a lot of lives.
And, you know, we've all been fans of MIGO and going back to the motivational Mondays.
Yeah, right.
used to call it. I've been a big fan of this guy since the very beginning, so couldn't be happier for what this team has achieved this year.
And I know that's just the start of things, good things to come for this baseball.
Number two overall seed. I mean, they weren't just good. They dominated. And I think we'll remember this team for a long time.
Shannon, I want you to always be a fountain and not be a drain.
I'm looking at a fountain right now, sort of. Well, I guess it's a waterfall. Yeah. It's not a drain, though.
Shannon, you know water can.
The stop. You know, you're going to screw it. He'll have the egg and soften the potato.
Okay, yeah, the same water that hardens the egg, softens the potato.
Yeah.
What was the others?
There's got to be other ones.
We've forgotten.
If you remember another Coach Mingium Motivational Monday, those are the two that always stick with me.
Are those two?
Wasn't there something like Thomas Edison tried to perfect the light bulb?
And he felled like 5,000 times.
Put it on the 5,000 and first time.
He got the right.
He got the light bulb and he changed the world.
Change the world.
I don't know.
I'm sure I'm butchering that, but I seem to have a distant memory.
Out one.
Yeah.
Feedback is the breakfast of champions.
Oh, nice.
Did he say that?
Yeah.
I got it down here in my notes.
Feedback is the breakfast of champions.
We get some awful feedback sometimes.
I don't know about that.
Got some great feedback on our boy Mario yesterday from the show yesterday.
They killed it.
Yeah, he did a great job.
Appreciate y'all.
Appreciate y'all.
With interview with Jasper Johnson and Tyler U.S. yesterday.
That was fun.
So look, we got a lot to us to talk about where we're in my backyard.
We affectionately call this area, my son,
dubbed it the lemon drop.
Oh, I like that.
Don't Google that on Urban Dictionary.
Don't, but we call
this area the Lemon Drop. Okay.
As everybody Googles on Urban Dictionary right now.
All right, well, take our break.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
and we're still chasing it
and we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
because you find it important to be a good person
while you hear on earth?
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.

I'm not worried about Balagan.
I'm not worried about McKinney.
My only concern is what happens in the back.
The biggest decisions.
If you're going to look at stats and numbers,
he has no shot at making this World Cup team.
And the truth about the U.S. national team.
It wouldn't be a huge surprise.
prize if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals.

Absolutely. Now a redacted amount of years later, we're still joined at the hip.
just a little bit bigger hips, wider.
This is a podcast.
We're recording it as we tailgate our youth soccer games in the back of my Honda Odyssey.
With all the snacks and drinks.
Sidebar.
Why did you get hard seltzer instead of beer?
Oh, they had a bogo.
Well, then you got it.
Do you want a white collar or something here?
Just hit it.
What are y'all doing?
Microphones?
Are you making a rap album?
Oh, I would.
Come on.
Could you imagine?
I would buy it.
Cut through the defense like a hot knife through sponge cake.
That sounds delicious.
Oh, you're lucky I'm not a drug addict.
You're lucky I'm not an alcoholic.
You are.
I'm lucky I'm not a killer.
I love this team and I'm really trying to be a figure in their lives that they can rely on.
Oh.
Listen to soccer moms on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
All right, welcome back.
Kentucky Sports Radio live from my backyard.
On the side of my backyard, thanks to CNS Pools.
Just had a guy who just walked up.
He said he's got a pool.
He's looking for maybe another pool service company.
CNS Pools does that.
They got all kind of different packages you can have.
I can have a package.
They come out and they test your chemicals, test your water,
they vacuum it, they clean it.
So it's all part of the services that they offer at CNS Pools.
So this guy, maybe he wants to check into it.
Corey, right?
Corey.
Yeah.
And the street continues.
I've having somebody show up at every KSR show we've ever done,
including this one in your backyard.
Including this one in my backyard.
Ryan, I've got to ask you,
is that who come with the pool or?
How does that work?
It was an additional purchase.
Okay.
But CNS pools got it.
I mean, I could have had a slide.
I could have had the basketball goal.
We opted for the basketball goal.
So, Ryan, are you kind of like the Michael Jordan of this court back here?
This is your, you know, backyard, you're pulled.
You dunk on all the kids in the neighborhood.
Like, how does this work?
I don't play too much because my son and his friends are now 17, 18 years old.
Yeah.
And they could push me around pretty big.
I would say it would probably be hard to dunk.
You know, it's hard to jump in water.
Right?
While you're waste deep in water.
So you probably don't dunk on it too much.
But I do see it's kind of bent down.
Somebody's been dunking on it.
Oh, they dunk on it all the time.
We've heard the Kentucky football teams come over here maybe once or twice.
Is that right?
Well, it's funny you said that they were almost had some guys going to come over and do a cannonball contest.
UK football players, but Dane.
But I think they have some meetings this morning they have to go to, so they're not going to make it.
But I was trying to work that out.
We were going to judge a UK football cannonball contest.
As fun as that would be, I'm glad to see the players have.
have their priorities in line.
They're not going to choose a cannonball contest over meeting with the football staff,
which is probably what they need to focus on.
859-280-2287.
That's our phone number, the Clark's Pubbit Shop phone number.
So who we got, Matt?
Steph.
Go ahead, Steph.
Hey, Steph.
Hey, Steph.
Yeah, kind of bummed about the Kentucky baseball team, but they had a good season.
They had a great season, Steph.
Were you able to watch all the games?
Yeah.
No, I missed two.
I got to see you like one or two.
Yeah.
Well, it was pretty exciting.
They had a great season and one we'll all remember for a long time.
Yeah, and I, um, and Shannon, congratulations to your Boston Celtics.
Yes, I played a big role in that championship.
Yeah, number 18, Mario loves that.
He's a big fan.
You should, by the way, congratulate Mario, too, stuff.
Congratulations, Mario.
He's a big Celtics fan.
I'm definitely not.
Oh.
But I'm starting softball.
I had my first practice last Monday, so.
Well, good luck.
Good luck, Steph.
We appreciate the phone call.
Steph, our star Special Olympics athlete plays all kinds of sports.
Oh, yeah, it's it.
She's like Bo Jackson.
She can play everything.
Dionne Sanders.
I'm glad she mentioned all the Boston Celtics, though,
because there is an Owensboro, Kentucky connection
to this year's Boston Celtics championship team.
There's a guy named Tyler Lashbrook.
I know him.
You know Tyler Lashbrook?
He went to Western.
He went to Western.
He was the men's basketball beat rider when I first joined, so I kind of learned from him a little bit.
But I had saw him post pictures with the Larry O'Brien Trophy.
Yes.
And I didn't realize he was on the Celtics until just the other day.
He's like in player development, player management.
He's like an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics from Apollo High School in Owensboro and went to Western Kentucky.
So he gets a ring.
He gets a ring.
Yeah.
He worked with the Sixers for a while.
Yes, he did.
And now he's with the Celtics, I guess.
Yeah, with the Celtics and won a title.
There's some video of him, you know,
shooting, you know, passing the ball before, you know,
the games on pregame warmups with Jason Tatum, and so Jalen Brown.
And so he's one of those guys that helps work them out, you know, and stuff.
So there's another connection for your Boston cell.
That's cool.
Yeah, Billy was telling me that the coaching staff was just walking through the streets of Boston with the title, right?
Yeah, the head coach was just walking around Boston.
I mean, luckily he had a couple guys with them just in case anybody gotten ideas.
But, you know, I like to see.
in that?
You go amongst them?
I like it, but it's a little careless, maybe.
You know, I mean, I guess if you have security, it's okay.
It's not as careless as we were talking about on the pre-show.
Tom Brady tossing the Lombardi
trophy from both to boat to Tampa Bay.
That's true.
Of course, you know, it means nothing to him.
The guy's got like 25 titles, but for the rest of the players,
they're playing, well, wait a minute now.
We play for Tampa.
We're not used to winning these things.
Not to take over the show for a second, but did you see the Monty Williams
news in the NBA?
He was fired by the Pistons after one year.
Shannon, you'll love this.
He got a 20 million buyout from the Sons in 2023.
They signed him for $78 million, the biggest deal in NBA history for a coach.
And after one season, they paid him $65 million to go away.
So he's getting $85 million to not cut.
I love it.
Sports are the greatest thing ever, right?
The worst you are, the more you get paid.
You're paying me that type of money to go away.
He had 14 wins, which I believe the Detroit Lions,
also had 14 wins.
The difference is the Pistons play like 64 less games,
and the guy's getting paid that much money to go away.
As you say, Ryan, sports is awesome.
Sports is awesome.
Laughing all the way to the bank, so.
The American Dream.
American Dream.
And a hat tip for Shannon the dude there, I'm sure.
All right, who's next, Matt?
Dalton.
Go ahead, Dalton.
How you boys doing live from the Lemon Drop?
We're live at the Lemon Drop.
Loving it.
Pool side.
Is this a remote where Ryan will be at his pool in his backyard
and still have a shirt on is very ironic.
He does have a shirt on.
That is ironic.
It's still early, though.
He still got a lot of show to do.
A couple of things.
Maybe Shannon and Billy can do the cannonball contest
that you can't get any players there.
And then I had a couple questions for Mario.
Mario, is this your first job in sports broadcasting?
Yes, first one.
First official one, yep.
Man, you are absolutely killing it.
You have a super bright future.
If this is what you want to do, you keep on with it, man.
You're way better than people that already have their own show.
Oh, thank you, man.
I appreciate it.
Those words mean so much to me.
Appreciate it, man.
Appreciate it, Dawn.
Thank you very much.
I got a lot of good feedback yesterday from our interview with Jasper Johnson and Tyler U.S.
I thought Jasper Johnson was awesome yesterday.
Good kid.
Said with us, you know, the guy has just blown up into this recruiting superstar,
and Kentucky did their best on Tuesday on his unofficial visit
to Kentucky, and he could tell, couldn't you, Mara,
he was kind of impressed and kind of glowing a little bit for what he saw.
I feel like we have a chance with Jasper Johnson.
Not right now, but definitely in the future.
Because he said Mark Pope told him, you're our priority.
Yeah, we were making you a priority.
That means a lot to a kid when they hear the coach saying.
Yeah, you want to hear that, right?
If you walk in and they say, you're not really a priority.
All right, next school, right?
Somebody like that, you've got a ton of people,
a ton of coaches that are recruiting you.
Obviously, Kentucky would love to have them on the staff, so hopefully it works out.
All right, well, take our break, come back, go back to the phone lines, 859-280-2287.

We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker walks up to me, he goes,
A, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office, Blue, 42.
Hey, rec, my mama want you to wave at her.

Where's she at?

Just a little bit bigger hips, wider.
This is a podcast.
We're recording it as we tailgate our youth soccer games in the back of my Honda.

Sidebar.
Why did you get hard seltzer instead of beer?
They had a bogo.
Well, then you got it.
Do you want a white color or something here?
Just a second.
What are y'all doing?
Microphones?
Are you making a rap album?
Oh, I would.
Come on.
Could you put it?
I would buy it.
Go.
Go.
Go.
It's like a hot knife through sponge cake.
That sounds delicious.
Oh, you're lucky.
I'm not a drug addict.
You're lucky I'm not an alcoholic.
You are.
You are.
I'm not a killer.
I love this team.
really trying to be a figure in their lives that they can rely on.

The biggest decisions.
If you're going to look at stats and numbers, he has no shot at making this World Cup team.
And the truth about the U.S. national team.
It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals.

Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Welcome back. Ryan, Shannon, Billy, and Mario here, Poolside in my backyard. Thanks to CNS Pools, our KS Summer Business pop-up tour.
Corey stopped by. We were talking to him. He's asking questions about the services and things we get from CNS pools.
Like I said, I use them.
I partnered with them for my pool deck.
Partnered with them for the landscaping,
so they can help you design it from start to finish.
Yeah, so it's really nice.
859-280-2287.
That's the Clark Pubbit Shop phone number,
but I want to ask, before we get to the line,
I want to ask you guys something.
John Caliperi went on a couple shows yesterday.
I know he was on the Dan Patrick show.
Maybe he was at the Jim Rome show also.
He was on two shows.
That's right.
Two shows yesterday.
And he said something like, hey, man,
I had 15 years there.
let Mark Pope have 15 years there
and let me finish how I want to finish.
That's the first thing he said I want you guys to comment on.
Probably five years too long
and I think he would acknowledge that.
I think he said that when he took over
the head coaching position at Kentucky.
He said, you know, this has got about a 10-year lifespan on it
and I think he realizes that he probably should have made the move
five years ago when things were still good.
Yeah.
Because the last few years, you know,
have not been up to Kentucky standards at all.
to be quite honest.
So probably the best thing that he could have done at this point.
I think everybody's happy.
He's repeating himself.
I feel like he's saying the exact same thing that we've already heard him say
about his feelings for Kentucky and Arkansas.
And I'm sure the Arkansas fan base will get tired of those same sayings
just like we did over all these years.
But, you know, he repeated the story about his two-hour walk
and how his first hour he thought about being the Kentucky coach
and the second he thought about being Arkansas.
And if that what it takes to move on from the best battle,
basketball program of all time, then best of luck, Cal.
But I think both parties are excited about the direction of where they're going right now.
Does Kyle give you guys salesman vibes?
Oh, yeah.
Kind of like the salesman.
Oh, yeah.
He kind of gives me salesman vibes sometimes.
You're not far along.
Well, that's why he's such a good recruiter.
There you go.
You can sell the program.
You can sell Hotel Calipari.
Could you imagine the conversations, though, we would be having?
I mean, luckily, the baseball team making their run that they have is sort of, you know,
taking the spot.
light off of everything else, but could you imagine, like, us talking about another year with
John Caliperi as the coach of Kentucky after what just happened in March?
To be honest, it would have been awful.
It'd been depressing.
Tom for a chance.
It would have been awful summer if we had to.
It would have been people saying, it would have been people saying what you just said.
Time to make a change.
And I think Kyle knew that, too.
He admitted it that is actually time for a change.
Yeah.
Now, the other thing he said that I want you guys to comment on, Cal said the opportunity to hire his
son played a big part.
And he hopes both sides benefit from a fresh start.
So him saying that leads me to believe that he wasn't going to be allowed to hire his son at UK.
Even after Coach Welsh left, remember, he left before Cal even made this move to Arkansas.
Do you think there was a decision made by Mitch Barner or something?
Like, no, you can't hire Brad?
Do you think?
So he's trying to say that this is one of the main reasons that he left Kentucky is because he could hire his son and coach with Brad?
I don't know if I buy that.
Again, like, do we buy anything that Cal says?
I mean, really, he's so full of coach-speak.
He says things all the time that you know you can't believe.
So I don't know if that was the deciding factor in leaving Kentucky.
Yeah, I think he just kind of went off on a tangent there a little bit
and talked about the opportunity of hiring his son.
I don't know if it was not available to him to hire him at Kentucky,
but the jokes would have been a lot more if they would have.
Oh, yeah.
Right?
I mean, it would feel like it would be a wasted spot on the staff
if you were just going to promote Brad like that,
but going to a new school, new chances,
maybe you have a different feeling about it.
I'm just guessing.
If he had stayed and if he had hired Brad to fill John Welch's spot,
a lot of our fan base's head would have exploded.
Well, Riley Welch was doing the game planning
before his dad had to come in.
Remember that?
Yeah, and that's still an undersold thing,
story to all this,
that Welch left before Caliperi left for Arkansas.
Did you catch Yula saying that Chin Coleman was doing a lot of watching film?
I almost laughed when he said that.
I started thinking, wait a minute, now that's exactly the opposite of what we've heard all this time about watching game film.
Got some people squeezing through my fence.
Oh, I don't think.
It's supposed to go to the other side.
That's okay.
That's all right.
You got an extra entryway you didn't know about.
There you go.
Well, I got a sign on the front door with an arrow pointing to the other way.
Oh, oops.
All right, let's take a call real quick, Matt.
Who we got?
Oh, God.
Are we still on the air?
Hello?
Bill, okay, go ahead, Bill.
Hey, guys, how you doing?
How you doing, Bill?
How you're in there?
I want to commend you guys on a couple things.
Number one, I thought with Matt gone,
you guys might have trouble filling the space,
but you guys are actually more entertaining
without Matt than when he was on the air.
So, kudos for that.
Very nice to your dad, Bill, to call, Shannon.
The other thing is a couple other things.
watched that Calipari clip yesterday.
And every time
he said, I mean, I don't know how many times I rolled my eyes
during that while he was,
while he was making those comments.
Because it's just so, I mean,
it's, it's just like,
the salesman.
Salesmen.
And I was just thrown out there.
Yeah.
Exactly what it felt like.
And, you know, so I can't wait for this year.
I've been plugged in more for this year because of you guys being on, you know,
I discovered you guys shortly as Cal was leaving.
And so I started listening.
I actually lived in Columbus, Ohio.
I grew up in Lungo, Kentucky.
And I've been a cat's fan since probably the mid-70s.
And so this is the most energized and the most plugged in I've never been before a basketball season in my entire life.
I am like, I can't get enough
to this information that you guys
that you guys give that I pick up on KSR website
the different things. Even made a trip
to Louisville, came to KSR Bar because I wanted
to see what it was like and
really enjoyed myself. The other thing,
two days ago, you guys were talking about the shot clock
and about
how Dean Smith
basically used it to
once North Carolina
got the lead, they drained the clock
and basically just took the life
out of the, yep, and it was so
frustrating to watch. But do you know, I think Kentucky was involved in one of the games that
really got rid of the shockbox? They were. This was back in December of 1983. A buddy of mine
went to this game. It was at the time it was called Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati.
They were playing UC. Yep. And UC won the tip, I think, or maybe Kentucky won the tip, went down
and scored, and then UC basically held the ball the entire game. Yep, that's right. The final score of
the game, the final score of the game was
24 to 11, and this is
in 1883.
Sounds like a excited basketball. I appreciate it, Bill.
Bill, thank you for the phone call. We got to move on. Appreciate it.
But he's right. That game kind of
put the idea
for a shot clock on the fast track.
So we could thank Kentucky basketball for giving us
the shot clock. See, just paving the way for
everything. We also have to mention
when those two people just came
in, the dogs nearly knocked us
off the year. We've got to have a plan for the
next time that somebody shows up here because one
dog literally jumped over the table, which is holding the equipment, and nearly, that could
have been a catastrophe there.
And not to mention that Ryan has had the dog in his lap for most of the show.
I mean, can we get Matt Jones to do a show with a dog in his lap for most of it?
Can you imagine him, Matt, we're here?
Oh, this would not go well with my dogs running around, people coming in and out.
No.
So, 859-2802-287.
That's our phone number if you want to call on board.
Matt, we got another phone caller.
John, go ahead, John.
Hey guys
I like a whole lot of what
the last guy just said
Also you know
Calipari is
You know
He's just
He's just blowing smoke to the national media
You know
It's something he's always done
I always will do whatever it is
Who he is
You know I'm not a Calipari fan
All the guys that say well I'm our chair for him
I hope he does well
And it ends well
Well you know the way he talked down to the
fan base and all that
That's got me crazy
but the truth is the Big Blue Nation is the reason he left the fan base.
I mean, that is the bottom line.
That's the truth.
He should say it.
And we should get credit.
Give credit.
We're credit to do, I guess.
All right, guys.
Y'all have a good one.
I appreciate it.
All right, appreciate it.
Thank you very much.
We've talked for years about the Cal Speak and what he says.
And right now, he's trying to.
Sell, Arkansas.
He's a really good speaker.
He's good.
He's good.
Like Billy said, that's what makes him a good recruiter.
He can go into your living room, charm the family, charm the player.
Did he come and play for him?
But I think that Kentucky fans just got Cal Fatigue.
Right?
Like, we've heard that stuff for 15 years.
It's not working, man.
You've got to try something else and all the things that he would say.
It was nice when you were winning, but then you'd start losing.
You know, Myron talked about that.
How much of a recluse he became?
Yes.
You know, you couldn't reach out to him.
You couldn't talk to him anymore.
He's kind of stopped talking to the fan base, and that was just one of many reasons this whole thing snowballed into what it became.
Oh, and then look at the difference with Pope.
I mean, not just the nostalgia factor, but just the whole emphasis on it being the importance of being at Kentucky.
You know what I mean?
And for so many years, it was the NBA draft was our most important day in Kentucky basketball history, and he'll never live that down, never did he?
And Mark Pope comes in here, and he says, these guys are going to understand what it means.
to wear the blue and white.
I did wear the blue and white.
And here's a picture of me
with the National Championship trophy.
So I think we were definitely ready for that change.
But the fact that this was one of our own,
I think it just helped with the transition.
And we mentioned Jasper Johnson, his visit with Mark Pope yesterday.
The fact that Mark Pope went to watch Jasper play in Argentina.
He's the only coach that's recruiting Jasper that was down in Argentina
and went to watching play.
Had to drive a stick shift too, right?
I saw that photo.
Oh, he had to drive a stick shift.
Well, Matt talked about that.
A lot of foreign cars, they're all stick shift.
They're not automatics there.
Right.
But you could tell that kind of resonated with Jasper yesterday, couldn't you?
Yes, definitely.
Man, Mark Pope going that far for a recruit.
It shows how much he actually cares.
He wants it, man.
He wants it.
He understands the assignment.
He always says that's what he says.
I just wanted to tell you, you know, it's so sunny out here.
I wish I had my shady rays with it.
I forgot them.
I'm in the middle of this move.
My life is in boxes right now.

It's slowly...
One, two, three, four, five, six people now.
Your backyard is slowly being invaded by the listeners.
Pool party.
And look, she's sitting on the edge of the pool, got her feet in the pool.
There you go.
Just might as well just enjoy the pool while you're here.
I'm wondering how your neighbors like this.
Like, is there ample parking space out there?
Because I feel like, you know, at this point, the cul-de-sac is about to get full.
Yeah.
Yeah, we had a Channel 18 get-together here last Saturday, and there were about 30 people here.
And I don't think my neighbors were too happy with parking situations.
More importantly, what about your...
You're HOA. I'm sure you got an HOA here, right?
Yeah, and it's, she's, she's a tough one.
Does she count cars?
Well, she counts, if you don't have your dumpster up by midnight tonight, you're going to get written up the next day.
Really?
Oh, you're herbie, yeah.
Yeah.
So you have somebody that actually walks around.
Patrols the neighborhood.
Yes.
Man.
Yeah.
You have to get permission on your fence and everything.
I had something like that where I was, but it wasn't that extreme or you had people patrolling.
But luckily, I moved to a little.
location to where there's no HOA. I hate HOA fee.
I mean, it's good to, like, stop people from parking in their front yard.
But HOA fees, unless you've got like a community pool or something, you're kind of getting
jobbed.
Sure.
They say you're paying it for common maintenance.
I mean, you're paying for the get a couple of patches of grass money all summer.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, that's what I'm paying all that money for.
Really?
Nice.
A-Vision Glass Text Machine got a good one.
502-735-3680.
That's the A-Vision Glass Text Machine number.
so this will be our Don Franklin call of the day.
No, so it's the Kentucky branded text of the day.
There you go.
Kentucky Brandon carried all the license UK baseball paraphernalia.
Yeah.
Hats, shirts.
They've got it.
You can order online at Kentuckybranded.com or you can go on the store and got it.
Tubby Smith said the same thing why he left because he couldn't hire Saul.
There are nepotism laws in Kentucky.
And I think that's right.
I think that did play into Tubby and Saul.
and they played into Cal and Brad.
He wanted to coach with his son, and he couldn't do it here in Kentucky.
I think maybe that was one factor of many.
I think going 9 and 16 one year, losing to St. Peters,
losing to Oakland, had a lot more to do with it, though,
than not being able to hire John Calipari.
You're telling me if Cal had the type of seasons that he had
in the early part of his Kentucky career that he would leave
because Brad Calapari couldn't coach here at Kentucky?
I don't buy that.
More than that.
I definitely agree with Shannon, but now we're seeing.
this with LeBron in the NBA draft
next week. Brony. Now we got Cal
saying he's leaving Kentucky so he could
hire his son. Like, Ryan,
you're the one with kids. I mean, is it that
important to you to do something with your son
like that? Like, can you understand
where they're coming from when LeBron is holding
teams hostage to tell them to draft his son?
Ryan Limit is the head coach for Kentucky
basketball, but they won't
let Josiah be the
assistant coach. Are you going to Arkansas?
Are you going to Fayetteville, Arkansas, over that
and living above a tin roof?
You know, I'm going to use the line that Al McGuire said when Al McGuire was coaching Marquette
and he was playing his son at Point Guard when he probably shouldn't have been.
He said, yeah, but I love my son.
Okay.
I love money.
I'm making good money in Arkansas.
What I'm saying is I can see Cowell's Point and I can see Tubby's Point.
If they want to coach with their son before they retire, I can get it.
And if there are laws in Kentucky that won't let you do it, I kind of understand it.
He already did it.
He was a gratis.
He was a grand assistant.
Yes.
Yeah.
So again, I don't buy what Cal Sam.
Shocker.
Well, that goes along with this from the Aviation Glass Text Machine.
Cal lies.
He illegally talked to Arkansas and got caught.
He had no other avenue but to leave.
That's what I believe.
That's what the texter said.
Could have been.
I think it's a breach of contract.
That's right.
Because he apparently, you know, it came out when they actually did start their conversation
before he notified Mitch Barnhart about it.
Like, I don't think that Cal long term, like a lot of,
long time ago thought, you know where I want to go one day,
Fayetteville, Arkansas. I just
think that he was looking for a way out.
This was a good way to do that.
You know, he met with the chicken people.
They offered them all this money, and it
just seemed like an easy way out, and I think that he took
it because of that. I thought a big part of it,
though, it's the chicken guy offering all this
money that they could do for name,
image and likeness and using for recruiting.
But it was the opposite of what Cal was saying at
Kentucky, right? He was here and saying,
oh, Kentucky doesn't need this money.
You come to Kentucky because you want to go to the
NBA, not because of the money.
And then he just completely flipped on that.
So I thought that was definitely a big part of it.
Another texter on the text machine.
If nepotism rules are in effect in Kentucky, then how did Mark Stoops hire his brother, Mike?
Just curious.
I mean, look, we're not lawyers here.
So I don't know.
Our lawyer is in Germany.
Yeah, I cannot break down the law.
The only lawyer I know that's in Kentucky that I associate with is T.J.
And he makes people pay.
So I don't know that he knows the nepotism law.
I'm sure he does know the nepotism law, but I don't.
I can't explain it.
Did you see Matt's Instagram yesterday?
He was at a Sweden soccer match, and it was like going crazy.
It looked insane.
It looked insane.
Was it Sweden or Scotland?
Scotland.
Scotland.
It was Scotland.
Yes, thank you.
That other S country.
Yeah.
Well, they were going crazy.
I saw from the pictures.
It was amazing.
Yeah, he said, next to a UK event, this is my best sporting environment I've ever been in.
Besides, yeah.
Besides Kentucky.
I hate to say it, but like other countries just have, they just do it better when it comes to live, brother,
concerts the fans are better they're just more into everything you know I got
watch all these bands that go and they'll you know go down to South they're going like
Argentina and their crowds are packed and they're all jumping up and down and they're all
chanting I'm like man we we just don't do that in America I don't know if we're just
jaded it spoiled what it is but other fans I feel like just do it better than we do
in America I think we do to a degree with our national teams right like when
Slovakia only plays three games every four years I feel like they're ready to go
but we have so many sports and it's not at a national level
I think the enthusiasm's a little dampened.
I don't know if you guys can't tell, but I'm getting baked in the sun right now.
You can slide over here in the shade.
Yeah, the shade is.
The shade is...
It feels good over here.
It's getting smaller.
It is getting a little hotter out here.
We have plenty of sunscreen for you, young Mario, to protect your beautiful skin.
I don't think that'll work on me.
All right.
We'll take our break.
Come back.
