Starting point is 00:03:07 This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now, here's Matt Jones. All right, good morning, and welcome everybody to another KSR pop-up show. Our summer tour pop-up show continues today, and we are down at Mike's Landing at Sulphur Creek Resort on Dale Hollow Lake. And as always, our KSR sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office, called T.J. He'll make them pay. He'll make them pay.
Starting point is 00:03:30 We'll have our Whiskey Thief call on the day. We'll have our Don Franklin. Whiskey Thief Song of the Day. Yes, yes. Don Franklin call all the day. Kentucky branded tweet or text of the day. Yep. Is that it?
Starting point is 00:03:42 You got it. And the Aviation Glass Text Machine is 502-735-3680. Ryan Lemon, Shannon, Shannon, the dude, and Billy R. Sports. Billy Rutledge's here. And guys, look, this job we have, this radio show, takes us to all corners of the state. We've been all over the state. And you get to see these hidden gems, these beautiful parts of our beautiful state.
Starting point is 00:04:03 And down here on Del Hollow Lake here at Mike's Landing, it is breathtaking. It is beautiful down here. It absolutely is. One of our favorite places, one of my favorite places, I'll speak for myself to come down here. It's a little drive from Louisville, two and a half hour drive. But once you get down here, it is absolutely worth it. I love this place. Yeah, you guys missed out. I mean, I was treated like a king last night. I got the whole cabin to myself. I didn't get locked in the bathroom.
Starting point is 00:04:23 I had a great time here in my sland. The second year in a row, you've come down here, spent the night, but last night no locked in the bathroom, no casualties, nothing bad happened to you? No, no issues. Didn't have much cell phone service, so just kind of connected with nature a little bit, Ryan, which is what people can do here.
Starting point is 00:04:40 What do you mean you connected? Did you go outside and catch lightning? I literally sat on the back deck and just kind of looked at the trees, just kind of enjoyed the silence. It's a nice vacation spot out here. He dabbled in the cornbread hemp last night. Maybe he did. Did your backyard, by the way,
Starting point is 00:04:53 recover from yesterday's show with all the strangers just wandering into the backyard. I got to admit, it was a little crazy for the strangers just walk into my backyard, but we didn't say no if people wanted to come and check out the pool, but I really enjoyed yesterday. I'm glad you guys came out there. I enjoyed having the show poolside. My dogs, I thought, behaved themselves pretty much for the most part, so I appreciate it. So today then, we load up and come down here to Mike's Landing, Sulfur Creek Resort on Dale Hollow Lake.
Starting point is 00:05:20 We were here at this time last year, if you guys remember, had a. great crowd this is a by the way thank you for coming out a great crowd again today give yourself a hand and the folks here were so happy with what went last year before our show was over last year they got shannon hall our sales rep booked another show for today they booked it at this time last year they were so happy with the way every turned out so we're back again for a second year in a row glad to be back here do we think maybe we can get you to captain one of these boats out here i would love to rent one of these pontoon boats and putter around the lake that's one of my favorite things in life to do that. I love to do that.
Starting point is 00:05:54 Will you be jumping in the lake later? I know that you have a history of jumping in the lakes when we do lake shows. Well, we're doing a KSR newlywed game between you two guys, and I think the losers should probably do a cannonball off the boat deck here. No, that's not happening. That's not happening. We'll just win the contest then. Okay, well, then I don't think Billy wants to do that either. He's got a two and a half hour drive back. It is a bit of a drive back.
Starting point is 00:06:13 But we know what happened when Shane and I played Listicuffs. We know who ended up winning that. Me, by the way. Let's go back. Yeah, you did win Listicuffs. Can I explain why I lost a listicoff? It's because I didn't really lose to Billy and Listicovs. Ryan lost a Billy in Listicovs because you get a phone a friend. Yes. Ryan was my phone a friend on a question.
Starting point is 00:06:35 Yes. And you got the question wrong, which made us lose to Billy. Mainly you. I think the question was the last seven former UK players to win an NBA championship. Maybe it was six. Yeah. That was the question. Good memory.
Starting point is 00:06:47 Well, can I remember because I said Tashon Prince. Well, he was number seven. They wanted the six after Tashon Prince. That was one of the trivia questions last night at KS Bar and Grill for UK TV. I knew he would use that. Look at this double-dipping. I'm going to guess the other one was which NBA team drafted Mark Pope. Okay, well, let's just ask a couple of these questions.
Starting point is 00:07:05 We had UK trivia last night at KS. Bar and Grill. Great turnout. We appreciate everybody came out and play with us. And if you listen to the show on Tuesday, we kind of had a hint of what one of the questions were going to be. Indiana Pacers, by the way. Well, here's the whole question. Mark Pope spent six seasons in the NBA. What three teams did he play for?
Starting point is 00:07:23 Oh, man. Well, okay, Pacers are number one, obviously. Billy, you know one? No, I don't know this one. Good grief. I'm trying to picture Pope in, like, other teams' jerseys. Yeah. And I'm kind of drawing a blank right now.
Starting point is 00:07:35 Anybody else know? Did he play for the Hornets? Milwaukee Box. Did he play for the Hornets? No, not the Hornets. No. You got... Who?
Starting point is 00:07:44 The Nuggets was the third one. There you go. There you go. That was one of the question. So then to kind of piggyback what we just said, named the seven former Kentucky basketball players who have won an NBA championship after Tashon Prince. Well, clearly you don't know the answer. Well, that's why I wrote the question now.
Starting point is 00:08:01 I thought Tashon was won him. But there's been seven win a title after Tashon won it in 2002. Anthony Davis. Anthony Davis is won. Rondo. Rondo actually won two titles. He just counts as one player. You need five more.
Starting point is 00:08:16 Let's see. Man, see, we're terrible at this game. Like on the radio too, there's like there's can't have any dead air. Yeah. See, when you do the trivia though, you get to actually sit down and think about it for a while. It's true. We give you like 15 minutes. Can you come up with another one?
Starting point is 00:08:29 Did Booker ever win with the Suns? No, no, no title. No. Nozhi Muhammad. Nozhi Muhammad, okay. And then the heat, when they won, they had Antoine Walker and Derek Anderson. Ah, okay. Both those guys.
Starting point is 00:08:41 You said Rondo. Yeah. Jody Meeks. Oh, Jody. The Raptors. You said Anthony Davis. And then last year, Timo Murray. Oh, that's right.
Starting point is 00:08:50 The Denver Nuggets. How did I win that category, Shannon? I mean, you've won by default because he... Oh, that's right, because Ryan lost it for you. You didn't have to name any of them. Well, speaking to the NBA, that's got our first topic we're going to start with. Another mock draft came out for the NBA. There was maybe a couple little surprises on it.
Starting point is 00:09:09 You know, all these NBA experts now doing all these mock drafts now, and they had Reed Shepard, maybe not a surprise, going third to the Rockets. I don't think anybody's surprised with that one, though, are they building? I think he's an expected top five pick at this point. No way he gets past four with the San Antonio Spurs. Would love to see him team up with Wembe. But, I mean, we've heard number one. We've heard three.
Starting point is 00:09:28 We've heard four. So I think he's locked in for a top five. We've heard NBA experts also calling, as we've been talking about on the pre-show a couple of days ago. Reed Sheppert, the best three-point shooter he's seen in the last 20 years, which is quite a comment. Yes, it is. That's quite a statement. I think there's a guy named Steph Curry may have an argument on that? Yeah, I mean, is it really saying that he's a better three-point shot?
Starting point is 00:09:49 shooter than Steph Curry. Ray Allen. I don't know. We've got a couple guys. Yeah. But I think everybody has assumed Reed Shepherd is going to
Starting point is 00:09:53 go top three or four. Good for him. Yeah. Now here's one of the surprises. This mock draft had Rob Dillingham slipping all the way to number 13 to the Sacramento Kings. It's been dealing with that ankle injury all summer.
Starting point is 00:10:04 I have to think that it had something to do with it. And also I think that NBA owners are a little bit concerned about his size. I think that's going to maybe not play into his favor. So I'd still be surprised if he goes all the way down to 13. But, you know, he's not a due
Starting point is 00:10:18 the era. I don't think he's still growing. But at the same time, you get into an NBA franchise, they bulk you up a little bit, right? You'd start to gain some pounds. So I'd be hard-pressed to see him almost fall out of the lottery. That would be surprising. It's kind of a weak draft, too, right? So, I mean, a guy like that, I feel like he could help out immediately, right? He's not a guy that's going to sit on the bench.
Starting point is 00:10:39 I mean, he's cold-blooded. Right. I mean, he'd come in here. He was like a microwave. He may have sat on the bench for Kentucky, but he'll play for the spurs if he gets drafted it for him. If he slides to 13 to the Kings, that's a steal for the Kings. Absolutely. So then we move to the second round. A couple of get your comments on this. After not being in any of the mock drafts for most of the summer, Antonio Reeves
Starting point is 00:10:58 pops up in this one at number 53. Second round pick going number 53 overall. I don't see how he doesn't get picked up by somebody. Even if he didn't get drafted, he would play his way into the league, whether it be having to go to the G league or go play overseas for a year or two. He's going to find his way on
Starting point is 00:11:14 a roster in the NBA if he doesn't get drafted. So he's going to be there one way or another. And I just had to look it up to confirm. He's only 23. So, I mean, it's... But why do people say he's an old man? Right, right. Why is it they're acting like he's coming in on a walker? I mean, the guy had, what, one of the best shooting seasons all time at the University of Kentucky? He's an experienced guy, more of a vet at the college game. So, you know, that kind of head, that's a head scratcher for me a little bit. It's a shooter's league. He's a shooter. So even if they send him to the G-League, he'll light it up
Starting point is 00:11:43 down there, get a call up, and then probably stay for a couple years. And then finally, the other Cat expected to be drafted according to this mock draft. Justin Edwards at number 56. So just a couple picks behind Antonio Reeds. He has really slid down, right? Because it wasn't he projected not that long ago to be in the first round. Late first, early second. And now all the way down to 53, which, you know, if we're being real about it,
Starting point is 00:12:03 based on what we saw at Kentucky last year, I think that 53 is more likely than, you know, 26 or 27. I think, you know, you get to that late second round. It's so much on potential. They see Billy what he did in that, maybe the Alabama game when he was, what, 10 for 11 from the field and had that awesome game, that one game, that's the potential. Maybe they're drafting him on. Yeah, he had his moment, and I don't think anybody was happier than us, because I think we were very critical of Justin Edwards at times this year.
Starting point is 00:12:29 But you know what? That's a guy that's, I think it's clutch sports, right? And at that point, you have an agent that is actively talking to teams trying to guarantee a draft pick, and they push you to the NBA. So I think that has a lot to do with him, not returning to college, not returning to a Kentucky because the people have around him. And I guess I hesitate to say credit to Cal right now. We can't give any credit to Cal, right?
Starting point is 00:12:50 Not now. He's an Arkansas Razorback. But, you know, he was saying that he is going to have a breakout game, and he finally had that. He did. He believed in that kid. He did. And he stuck with him. But he was supposed to be the number one overall pick. Overall pick.
Starting point is 00:13:03 He was the number one of that recruiting class, and that didn't translate. But it was good to see some success by the kid later. As much as Reed Shepard has overachieved from where he was at the very beginning. Oh, yeah. I feel like Justin Edwards is sort of the other way, underachieved. You know, there were some of these summer shows last year where we all thought Justin Edwards may end up being the leading score by the end of the season last year,
Starting point is 00:13:24 and it just didn't happen for him except for the one game, the Alabama game. That's right. And, you know, we've seen how many guys go to the NBA that wasn't that great at Kentucky, but just find superstardom. I mean, look at Shay Gilgis Alexander. BJ Boston to a degree. I mean, it didn't really work out at Kentucky, but he's doing some great things right now.
Starting point is 00:13:40 There comes a guy rolling up on a C-DU right now. Is that a, I can't tell. A sea, do, a jet ski, what do you call those? That's the life right there. I was telling Billy, I had a jet ski once upon a time, but then it broke down and I just couldn't fix it, so it's now in a junkyard. You still do.
Starting point is 00:13:53 Still own it, right? It's still technically owned it. You're just like Matt with his car. You just left it somewhere. It's like sinking into the ground like Matt's car that was in the Jack Harlow video. Yeah. Well, come on out and see us. We're going to be here, obviously, until noon, doing KSR.
Starting point is 00:14:06 We're at Mike's Landing. If you're over here in the Berksville area, did you see the big hotel up on the hill, in Berksville when you came in? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. That's the one thing. What do you remember about Campbell County when we did our county to countdown and Berksville? I remember just a couple things. One, I remember, if I'm not mistaken, didn't the guy that invented Maxwell House coffee from here? He is, really? He's from Berksville from Campbell, I said Campbell County. I'm sorry, I said Comberlin County. He's from here, right? Now they're not in their head. Yeah. And I also remember there are only a couple counties in the state that aren't named after a person. and Cumberland County is named after the Cumberland River. I think Rock Castle County is one of them. What's another one? Union County, I think.
Starting point is 00:14:48 I don't think Bullitt County is named after a guy. Maybe. I mean, after a bourbon. But what else do we know other than that big hotel out here on the hill? What is it? Alpine Motel. Is that the name of it? It sits up on the hill out there.
Starting point is 00:15:02 So we're here at Mike's Landing. It's a Soper Creek Resort. Beautiful, Dale Hollow Lake. We've got a lot of special things coming up later today. At 1030, we're going to talk to Ryan, Nicholson, the UK first basement. He's going to call in. We're going to talk to him about the great season. They just got back from the college baseball world series. At 11 o'clock, we're going to play our KSR version of the newlywed game, Billy. I can't tell you how excited I am
Starting point is 00:15:22 for this. I'm ready to go, Ryan. We'll see who the winner is. Luser has to do a cannonball. Not doing it. In the Dale Hall Lake. We'll be right back. Ryan, Billy, Shannon, Super Mario's here as well. Give us a call. 859-2-287. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible, guests. I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
Starting point is 00:16:46 we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.
Starting point is 00:17:14 Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back.
Starting point is 00:17:45 Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levant this plant to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire start? survive. The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Life throws hurdles big and small. The question is, how do you conquer them? On Hurtle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most
Starting point is 00:18:35 inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going. From the WNBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't belong.
Starting point is 00:18:59 Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs, Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladeke. The ability to show a gold medal. to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything.
Starting point is 00:19:22 Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of of I-Heart women's sports. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:19:45 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. All right, welcome back. Kentucky Sports Radio live at Mike's Landing at Sulphal Creek Resort down here on Dale Hollow Lake.
Starting point is 00:20:13 Of course, Sorful Creek Resort operated by the Humphrey family since 1978, become a must-see destination. We're down here at Dale Hollow Lake. Mike's Landing here has a full menu. They also have live music. Maybe Alice Bluegown could come down and jamming out down here for everybody. We talked about doing that last year. We just going to make it happen. I know there was live music here last night.
Starting point is 00:20:32 Oh, was there? Did you come over here last night? I did. Yeah, it was actually one of the owners, Brian. was the bass player. No kidding. Yeah, so in between helping me get connected, he was out here rocking and singing. Very cool. Absolutely. Got some KSR royalty here. Of course, Bob and Jamestown's here.
Starting point is 00:20:45 He lives across the leg over there. Look, there's Grandma Sarah. That's right. The pride of Clinton County, 85 years young right there. That's right. We've got to tell her age. She's proud of it. I hope I'm like that at 85, don't you?
Starting point is 00:20:58 Yeah. I just hope I make 859. 8-587. That's the Clark's Pumping Shop phone numbers. Let's get up our first caller. Who we got, Matt? Mike, go ahead, Mike. What's up, guys?
Starting point is 00:21:09 What's up, Mike? Well, are y'all up to Trigg-Camp? What do you say? I don't know. He cut out on it. Cut out of us a little bit, Mike. Try it again. I said, are y'all up to Trigg County?
Starting point is 00:21:24 We're going to do Trigg County probably next week. So are you from Trigg County? Do you know some Trigg County info? Yeah, what do you want to know? Well, call us on Tuesday. No, Wednesday. Tuesday or Wednesday? Wednesday.
Starting point is 00:21:35 Wednesday? Yeah, I'll do it Wednesday. Yeah, we got Myron Metcalf on Monday, Tom Hart on Tuesday. That's right. So we'll do Trigg County on Wednesday. And the bracket reveal has changed a little bit. We're not going to be at Rupp Arena on Wednesday. But we will have some tickets to give away if you'd like to go see the TBT team.
Starting point is 00:21:50 Oh, that's cool. So is that all you got for us? Well, I mean, I don't think about what you're talking about today. Well, that's good. Neither do we. Well, thanks for the call. We appreciate it. Appreciate the phone call.
Starting point is 00:22:01 You just want to talk about Trigg County. You know about Trigg County. It's funny how people, when we start this, they start getting on board with it. They can't wait for their county to get here. So Mario came down with us. We just drove through Wayne County to get here. And I said, see, now you can talk about Wayne County. We just drove through Wayne County.
Starting point is 00:22:16 This guy from Trigg County couldn't wait a day. Spencer County had to wait four years. That's true. 859-2802-287. We have another call, Matt. Okay, phone lines over. You want to call and get on board. We're kind of staying with our NBA theme, though.
Starting point is 00:22:29 You guys talked about it on the pre-show. We need to talk about it here on KSR. J.J. Reddick signs a deal to become the Lakers head coach. That's right. Maybe not the big breaking news for us, but the breaking news for us in this land was the fact that he may bring on Rijon Rondo
Starting point is 00:22:44 as an assistant coach on his staff with the Lakers. What's your thoughts about that? I'd love that. I'd love to see Rondo in a coaching position. I know he does a lot with the AAU team that he has and that's been holding him back from doing something like that, but Rondo, from what I've heard, is one of the brightest minds that can connect with kids and can
Starting point is 00:23:00 be really good at coaching. So, I love that for him. I don't know how long JJ Reddick's going to last. It's been a turnstile for Lakers and head coaches. Are they going to draft LeBron James' kid? Who knows if he'll be there next year? But I think JJ's a rising talent in Rondo could go a long way of giving him some experience. If I'm Rondo, I take that job and go, hey, look at the Lakers'Aker's history, how they turn over coaches.
Starting point is 00:23:20 They're a couple of years. Rondo may be setting himself up for a head coaching position to Lakers. Maybe so, yeah. I mean, he was kind of a coach on the floor when he played there, you know? Well, you know, there were, you know, a lot of reports that he could possibly join John Caliperi staff here at Kentucky even next season if Calgary had stayed. After Calipari left, there were some rumblings
Starting point is 00:23:38 that maybe Rondo would join Mark Pope's staff at Kentucky. Obviously neither one of that happened, but he obviously has an interest he wants to get into coaching or he wouldn't be pursuing it like this. Absolutely. Now do we think our guy Tyler Ullis will eventually be doing what Rondo is doing, NBA assistant, college head coach? Could you see him out of Tyler Ullis? I can see it. I mean, Tyler, I think I saw
Starting point is 00:23:58 saw it the past two years with Cali Perry how he kind of was the coach for the point guard. And, you know, was really, you could tell him, connected with the guys, the point guards on the floor the last couple of years. So I can see that, can't you? Yeah, Ulyss was the guy a lot of times drawing up the plays, right? Yeah, that's right. Kind of the mastermind behind what they're going to do next when they go out after the timeout. So, yeah, I could see him definitely moving up the coaching rinks.
Starting point is 00:24:19 I will say this. Rondo, even though he was kind of a turd to deal with when he was at Kentucky. You always say that about him. He was. He was hard to deal with. Will. Did he not give you an interview or what happened back in the day? I kind of touched on it one day.
Starting point is 00:24:33 There was a report by Alan Cutler, my buddy at Channel 18, and Rondo didn't appreciate or didn't like. So the next time Alan went to talk to Rondo, all Rondo gave him was, yes, no, I don't know, yes, no, I don't know. Well, is there a chance that maybe that was fair? Like, I didn't see the article that was written about them, but, like, let's say somebody wrote an article about you that you didn't like. What would you, I mean, I know how you are.
Starting point is 00:24:57 Like, you're the most lovable person, but also the most, like, spiteful person. person at times. The nicest but the meanest person on KSR, right? That's what Matt always calls you. The nicest person but also the meanest. I think you got to be a professional in that capacity. And Rondo needs to probably handle himself like a professional and like answer the media's questions. I mean, when you walk in to play, when you walk in the locker room to play at UK, you know you're walking into that bubble where you're going to be praised if you do well. You're going to be criticized if you don't. So, so but anyway, what I was saying, even though Rondo was kind of a turd to deal with. At least he answered the question. He did.
Starting point is 00:25:31 He was, though, maybe the most cerebral basketball player in college I've ever been around. Smart. Him and Tashon Prince were kind of back-to-back. Those guys were just smart basketball players. Mark Pope, people talk about him being the same way. Rondo's in that same category. Coaches get younger and younger every year. Now with J.J. Radick joining the Lakers.
Starting point is 00:25:52 Maybe it is in Rondo's future here soon. I won't be surprised. Like I said, he's already involved in it with coaching his AAU team. He wanted to get on Cal Staff. So now that brings up another question that Rajan was a part of last night. You want to try one more UK trivia questions? See how you doing this one? Okay.
Starting point is 00:26:06 Reed Shepherd almost broke the UK men's basketball record for steals in a season. Okay. He had 82. Yeah. Rondo holds the record with 87 in a season. Rondo's also number six on the list. So name the next six players on the list besides Rondo and Reed Shepard, who have the most steals in a season.
Starting point is 00:26:26 Jerry Prickett. No. No. How about our guy you look? Uh, no. No. I feel like Prickett is on like the all-time steals, like, top ten, though. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:38 Yeah, this is steals in the season. Wayne Turner. Wayne Turner is next in line. Yes, that's one. You got one. Yeah. That's call. I'm trying to think of guards.
Starting point is 00:26:46 Bogans. Ashton Hagen's? Hagen's is a good answer. Not an answer. There's Bogans on there. No. Delk. Yes.
Starting point is 00:26:55 Wayne Turner, Tony Del. Hold on. You got four more. No? Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on. How about our boy that was just here with us a couple of days ago? Carl Macy. Yes.
Starting point is 00:27:06 Yeah. Kyle Macy is on the list. Come on, you need three more. Billy, come on. I mean, I'm doing all the work here. I'm here to win the newlywed game. You're doing UK trivia here. Cliff Hawkins.
Starting point is 00:27:18 Yes, Cliff Hawkins. Oh, look at this guy. You got two more. I'm running out now. Who? Ed Davener. No, Ed Davener is a great. guess. That's who Richie Farmer guessed last night, too.
Starting point is 00:27:30 I don't know. Give me the next two. Anthony Epps. Okay. And this one was going to be hard. Yeah. Roderick Rhodes. Oh, yeah. Yeah, hardly anybody got that. I didn't have Roger Rhodes in me. That was a tough one. After he had to sit on the bench after those in the NCAA tournament.
Starting point is 00:27:45 But, you know, there's so many more steals now because there's more possessions. They play faster and there's more possessions. So that's why a lot of the current guys have more steals. That pontoon right there with the slide on the back is the type of pontoon I would want to have. Yeah, because it's got a grill. Look, it's got the grill on, it's got the slide back there. I mean, it doesn't have a cover, but when you get too hot, you just go down the slide and get in the water.
Starting point is 00:28:04 They have pontoon rentals out here. They have cabin rentals out here at Salfa Creek Resort, so it's a great little getaway. Like I said, it's not that far from Lexington and Louisville, two and a half hour drive, and it's beautiful down here. Absolutely beautiful. If I were staying down here for a weekend, it's absolutely worth. No doubt about it. That drive. 859-2-80-287.
Starting point is 00:28:20 That's our phone number if you want to call and get on board and ask us a couple of questions. There was kind of some sad news I thought out of Lexington. yesterday when it was announced that Joe Bologna's was closing its doors. It's going to sell. He's going to sell Joe Bologna's in Lexington yesterday. Yes. They do a lot of advertising. They do do a lot of advertising with us.
Starting point is 00:28:38 So I hated to see that go. That's kind of a Lexington staple. Okay. You know, being from Louisville, living in Louisville, I'm not really that familiar with Joe Bologna's. I'm going to guess they sell fried bologna. Well, they do. All their pizza. Pizza, pasta, bread sticks.
Starting point is 00:28:52 That's as big as our, it's like a loaf of bread. The bread stick is so big. Always supporting the high school. tournament? Always. So I always told people, what do we do? We're coming to Lexington, we're going to a game, we're going to Keenland, what do I do? Well, before KS. Bar, I'd always say, go to Joe Bologna's. Go have one meal at Joe Bologna's and then go do some other stuff. Now it's go to KSbarra, then go to Joe Bologna's then go to see he's going to see it go. We're seeing more and more local restaurants having to close their doors, aren't we? That's the kick in the gut right there, all these local landmark restaurants and Joe Bologna's been around forever. It is a landmark in Lexington. Yeah, I hate to see it go. It's one of Lexington's oldest restaurants. But Joe Bologna, who turned 79 in April, said this year he decided to sell it after 51 years in business. Will it still be Joe Bologna's just with a different owner? Well, maybe. Maybe.
Starting point is 00:29:38 I think they've reached a deal with somebody. I don't know if he'll keep it as Joe Bologna's. You know where it is? It's in an old church. We're right off campus right there. So it is kind of a Lexington landmark that we all have all been to at one point or another. All right. We take a break.
Starting point is 00:29:52 We come back. We're going to get on UK first baseman Ryan Nicholson. just finished an outstanding season. Individually he had a great season tied to the single season home run record this year. A local guy, he's from St. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Starting point is 00:34:46 Welcome back to Mike's Landings Restaurant here at Sopple Creek Resort on Dale Hollow Lake. It's beautiful out here today. We thank the folks for a second year in a row, inviting us to come down here. And now if everybody, please give a big blue nation. Welcome to UK First Baseman Ryan Nicholson, who joins us now on the phone. Hey, Ryan, we appreciate you join us, man. Congratulations. I mean, you guys had a great run. You yourself had a great season, and we just want to get a chance to talk to you about, but congratulations, man. Thank you. I appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:35:19 What was the biggest thrill for you going out to the college-based? baseball world series. Like what do you when you're an old man like I am what are you going to remember about those those three games? Probably Mitchell Daley's home run in the first one again NC State. I was on deck for when he hit that homer and I was I was jumping around like a little kid. I lost myself for a second. So that's probably the one that's going to stick out to me. Hey Ryan it's Shannon. Talk to me a little bit just about how much the fan support from Big Blue Nation has meant to this team. I mean they showed up at Kentucky Proud Park all
Starting point is 00:35:52 season long for you and then to see our fan base travel to Omaha. Talk about how special that was for this team. Yeah, man, that was so awesome. In the Super Regional and in the regional, I mean, this place, I mean, Kentucky Crow Park was packed out. You know, I couldn't say enough about how much they impacted the game there at home. And I knew that we were going to have a really solid crowd in Omaha, but I didn't know what it was going to look like. And when we got there and played that first game against NC State and how much, you know, they filled the stadium, you know, around the whole park.
Starting point is 00:36:27 It was just something special. It's really hard to describe, but other than something special, man. Ryan, speaking about that first game versus NC State, it was daily with the walk-off, but it was you in the bottom of the ninth, tying it with a solo home run. Take me through that moment, man. That must have been an exciting one at Omaha.
Starting point is 00:36:44 Yeah, it was, you know, we were down one in the ninth. We needed something. I was just trying to really to get on base and I thought they were going to pinch a pinch run for me if I got on and they just kind of kept on throw me outside and I mean really tried to keep the low with the win that day and just kind of snuck out of there down the left field line and that's something I'll never forget for the rest of my life you know we had on Chris Burke was on the show here two weeks ago you know he's a saint X guy you're a saint X guy and he talked to
Starting point is 00:37:19 little about, you know, what he thought it meant for you to be able to play in your home state for your last year of college baseball to get to put on the Kentucky uniform. What did that mean for you? It was just really special, just, you know, coming home and playing for this team. You know, so many people reached out when I came, when I committed to Kentucky, and it's just, it meant so much to my family and everyone who's reached out. And, you know, Chris Burke, especially when he's calling those games and being a San X guy, I mean, the time, you know, he always gives those same X shout-ups and stuff like that.
Starting point is 00:37:52 So this is super cool. Coming from Cincinnati, talk to me about, you know, just going back to the beginning of the season, deciding to come play for Kentucky and Coach Mngeon. Of course, we love him here on the show for all of his motivational talks and everything that he does here on KSR. But what went into the decision to transfer to Kentucky and play for Coach Mnigone? Yeah, we were going through a coaching change at Cincinnati. I loved my time at Cincinnati.
Starting point is 00:38:19 I'll always cherish it and the friendships I've made over there. It was just time, I think, for a change of scenery. A lot of my friends and guys I went in the program with over there were leaving, graduating, going somewhere else to play, stuff like that. And also, yeah, like I said, we were in the middle of the coaching change. So I thought I put my name in the portal, kind of tiptoe around, see what was out there. I still thought that I might be able to go back to Cincinnati. with the new coach, so waiting to see who they were going to hire.
Starting point is 00:38:51 I got a lot of buzz in the portal, and then I knew Coach Kuzano, and then he was going to be taking over a role at UK. He gave me a text, a call, and he was like, hey, like, I think you really fit in here. You know, we need a first baseman. I checked it out, and my brother was graduating this past semester from UK. I'm so close to my family and my girlfriend. This kind of seems like a really attractive spot right now. I got on the phone with Coach Amarotti and Coach Minge,
Starting point is 00:39:26 and I made my decision after that. I was super happy that I made that decision, and I wouldn't change anything. Ryan's smiling. Ryan Lemon is smiling right now because he always says that the girlfriend is a big factor when it comes to. Oh, when it comes to recruiting, the girlfriend is usually undefeated. And I think we owe her a lot of gratitude for getting you to play.
Starting point is 00:39:45 in Kentucky did. I think she was happy. She played lacrosse at Cincinnati, and I was looking at some schools in the portal that were kind of far away, so I think she was hoping that UK or Sissy was my landing spot. Now, Ryan, the motto this year for the team was get weird, and we saw everything from pink bucket hats to stacking hats on top of each other, hand puppets in the dugout.
Starting point is 00:40:09 You know, where did that start, and was that distracting? Is that what normally happens with the baseball team, or was this just a special group that could do stuff like that? I think there's a multitude of things. I think that this was one of the groups that can do it. I think we had a lot of different personalities, especially stemming from the pitching staff who is in the dugout when we're doing that stuff.
Starting point is 00:40:30 I didn't really think it was very distracting. I loved when our dugout was doing miscellaneous activities, just getting wild in there. But it stemmed really from our player development coach, who helped with pitching Trevor Fitz. He played on the 2013 Mississippi State College World Series team along with our hitting coach, Coach Amarotti.
Starting point is 00:40:52 And they were just really preaching like, hey, like, you know, that team that we had, like we just did whatever in our power in our dugout to, you know, have energy and do a bunch of, you know, it could be dumb, it could be stupid, it could be whatever, like somebody could label up, but it's creating energy and creating momentum in the dugout. And we talked about that
Starting point is 00:41:12 He kind of, you know, led the charge with the pitching staff and the dugout for when that was going on. I think it really helped, like, I want to say, like, vibes, I guess, like, throughout a game. You know, we never really felt that we were out of everything. And, you know, I think it propelled us really, like, through FD. play. You know, you mentioned, you know, your home run against NC State. And, of course, the dailies walk off against NC State. But I think for a lot of fans, one of their lasting memories is going to be,
Starting point is 00:41:40 after the game got rained out Tuesday night, you guys. guys had just a makeshift meet and greet and you were sworn by thousands and thousands of Big Blue Nation fans that came to meet you guys get an autograph and talk to you that that that whole scene was really special to watch I think yeah it was really cool um coach men like said that we were going to do that um because of the the rain out you know everybody was on board for that and it was kind of like something similar to what we did uh at arena for the Florida basketball game. It was basically, it was cool to see like everyone who's come down.
Starting point is 00:42:15 I mean, I know that hotels and, you know, lodging and everything, staying in Omaha is insanely expensive, especially for that, you know, 10 days or so, whatever it is. But I think, you know, I can speak for all the players that we were just so thankful that, you know, all those fans came down and we were more than willing to do whatever, you know, for the fans for those, you know, hours ago that we were down there with that. It was just an awesome team. I'm glad that we got to hang with them. Ryan, you were a big part of this Kentucky team
Starting point is 00:42:45 during their most successful season and history. When you look back on the season, was there a certain point of the season when you realized, hey, what we've got here is something special? Or did you just kind of realize that from the beginning? I think when we started, like, really hot in SEC play, I want to say when we swept through We were like 15 and 1 in SEC play.
Starting point is 00:43:10 I was like, all right, like we have something different, some different than what these other SEC schools have. I wouldn't say early on, like, I think we were still trying to find, like, our niche and, like, what we were, you know, where we kind of sat. And, you know, when you start SEC play, it's a totally different season when, you know, you're facing, you know, the toughest competition and stuff like that. So I think we're, I think, like myself, everybody was kind of waiting to see. you know how we would fall and you know where we fall in the mix but I think once we took care of those
Starting point is 00:43:43 first couple weekends in conference I think everyone just kind of looking around like all right like you know we got some here and you know we need to make the most of this right here Ryan I got to think that Kentucky Proud Park during those super regional games may have been one of the best environments in baseball that you've ever been and would you agree with that because I felt like Big Blue Nation really showed out how they were building bleachers in the outfield so we can get more people in there that was a lot of fun yeah I was I I really wish they'd keep those bleachers. I thought that was super cool.
Starting point is 00:44:09 I mean, they need to get some seating around the park, you know, in the outfield. I think that would really, you know, help with just, like, how it's really set up. I think bleachers in the outfit is so cool, but especially in college. But, yeah, I mean, those super regional games, I mean, they were packed out like five, you know, five rows deep off the rail and, you know, in the outfield. I mean, you just can't really ask for a better atmosphere than that. is, you know, they really propel this both regional and super regional weekend.
Starting point is 00:44:41 Everybody, a big round of applause for Ryan Nicholson for joining us. Thank you very much, Ryan. Congratulations. Thank you. Great season as a team. You yourself had 23 home runs, tied the season, single season record for home runs in a season. So thank you for joining us, and best of luck to you, man. Thank you for having me.
Starting point is 00:44:58 All right, Ryan Nicholson. Very good interview. Because guys now, you know, coming back, kind of unwind a little bit, and I hope they get a chance to let it soon. soak in what they just were able to accomplish, even though it kind of ended disappointingly. It will. Now is the time for reflection for all that, and they'll realize that they've not only had the best season ever in Kentucky baseball history, but they've laid the foundation for that to be the barometer for success for Kentucky baseball.

Starting point is 00:50:22 But tell us who our sponsor is this segment channel. Yeah, if you're going to be out on the lake, you've got to have some sunglasses, right? I think you do. And you need to get shady rays. Stop overpaying for you. sunglasses if you're tired of buying expensive sunglasses only to lose or break them or you'll lose them in the lake. Starting point is 00:50:42 and they have premium polarized shades for every activity. And if you go to Shady Rage, you can get their premium polarized shades, ask them for yourself. Ask them, let me read this right. They're risk-free for yourself. And you can see why they have over 250,000 five-star reviews. Use the promo code KSR for 50% off two pair or more at their flagship location at the summit at Fritz Farm or online at shady raise.com. Billy, we had a guy come up and ask us during the break. What SEC series did the UK baseball team actually lose this year?
Starting point is 00:51:14 And they only lost two series. That's right. Tennessee was the one. And then South Carolina was the other one that we couldn't think about. Won all the other series, which is tough to do in the SEC when actually two SEC teams are playing for the championship this weekend. That's right. College World Series, Texas A&M and Tennessee. So who you root for? Texas A&M beat Kentucky and Tennessee's the rival.
Starting point is 00:51:34 You can't pull for Tennessee under any circumstance. We were on board with that, right? And we just awarded the worst song lyrics ever to Rocky Time. That's right. We'd hate to come on here and then say we'd rooting for Tennessee. Yeah, so Texas A&M. We're rooting for Texas A&M. Knock them all.
Starting point is 00:51:48 All right, 859-2802-287. That's the Clark's Pumpin-Shout phone number. Who we got, Matt? Ken. Go ahead, Ken. Yeah, I got a question. Y'all were talking about AI on the pre-show, and y'all were talking about Randy Travis using AI to make the song some time ago.
Starting point is 00:52:08 How cool would it be if Kentucky uses AI to bring back K. Wood Lefford and do a game with Tom Leach? Appreciate the phone call. I love that idea. Can you imagine Tom and K. Wood calling a game, one game? I think that would be awesome. Now, they're both play-by-play guys. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:27 So how would that work? Can you get out one person do the color commentary? So Tom would probably have to do the live commentary of the live action. Yeah. Since it's Kwood would be AI. But Kewood could like be the color commentator to drop comments throughout the game, right? Yeah. And listen, the nostalgia factor would be great, but it's a slippery slope here with AI.
Starting point is 00:52:46 Jack Gibbons might have a little something to say about that. Exactly. They'll be replacing me with AI. Jack would probably give up his seat for one game if they wanted to try for one game. But that would be kind of... Well, I always thought, you know, if they want to do this. something cool, like a throwback thing, why not bring back, like, the Jefferson Pilot
Starting point is 00:53:01 sports guys, Tom Hammond, Larry Conley. Yeah. Love those guys. You know, like when you watch those SEC games and you had those two calling it, it was awesome. 859-2802287. Who's next, Matt? Alex, go ahead, Alex. Hey, guys, I called in a few weeks ago talking about University
Starting point is 00:53:19 of Kentucky wrestling. There's two things I wanted to bring back to you, Ryan. The gentleman's thing you couldn't think of was Garrett Headley. He was Kentucky's first SEC champion wrestler. All right. And we need to start the campaign to get Joe Carr Sr. into the Kentucky University of Kentucky Hall of Fame.
Starting point is 00:53:38 He's a three-time SEC champion, three-time NCAA All-American. He was a part of Kentucky's 76 and 77 FCC championship team. The University of Kentucky wrestling needs to be represented in the U.S. U.K. Hall of Fame. And Joe Carr Sr. needs to be the first. their team. Alex, we appreciate it. I mean, I'm surprised Joe Carr is not in the
Starting point is 00:54:01 UK Athletics Hall of Fame. Maybe it's because wrestling was considered a club sport. Maybe that's why he's not in it. I don't know. But, yeah, Joe Carr, that's the one name I think most people know when it comes to wrestling in the state. Well, with a resume like that, why not? Yeah. Right? I mean, honor in our past Wildcats. You make a phone call, Ryan,
Starting point is 00:54:17 get that done? I'm going to make a phone call to get Shannon the dude. I was going to say, I think there are some other names when it comes to wrestling in Kentucky that people might recognize. Shannon T. Dude. They're a new heavyweight champion. Is there another women's royal rumble coming around that you can participate in?
Starting point is 00:54:33 I don't know. If so, maybe I can get you in there. I was there the day that Shannon wrestled a couple of women and they threw him out of the ring. Out of the ring. I don't remember that part. I remember, I think I've got pictures of it. I think that's revisionist history you're doing there. 859-2802-287.
Starting point is 00:54:47 We got another one, Matt. Mike, go ahead, Mike. Hey, what's so? Go ahead, Mike. Okay. Okay, can you hear now? Yeah, we hear you. Go ahead. Okay.
Starting point is 00:55:04 Well, I just want to tell you, my buddy got Harold, his only talk, because we were the College World Series this week, and it was fantastic. Awesome. You guys were at the College World Series. Yeah, I appreciate the phone call. Thank you very much. Just to see that sea of blue that was there was kind of impressive, wasn't it? It really was. I saw Brian Milam, the sports director for WKYT talk about it on Facebook the other day.
Starting point is 00:55:28 How was, like, his best experience of his career? It's a special thing for baseball guys to make that pilgrimage to Omaha, and I'm really glad that UK got their moment to do that. Tom Hart questioned when he hosted our show if Kentucky would travel to watch UK baseball, remember? Come on. Tom Hart knows better than that. He was just trying to challenge us. He was riling us up.
Starting point is 00:55:47 Yeah, you know, like Kentucky fans travel better than anybody, right? I mean, whether it be basketball, football, even baseball, when it's something like that in the college world series for the first time in school history, you knew that Big Blue Nation was going to show up. Your dream was to run around the bases at the Little League World Series. Which happened. It did happen. The next step now is Omaha, is it not?
Starting point is 00:56:06 It makes me kind of sad because if Kentucky had survived and it made it to this weekend, we would be leaving for Omaha right after this show. Oh, is that right? We'd been loading up, driving to Omaha for the weekend. I have nothing scheduled this weekend so we could go out there, and so my heart kind of breaks a little bit knowing we're that close to getting to go out there. Yeah, well, the caller's right, those hotel prices out there. That's true.
Starting point is 00:56:26 Good luck. You know, a lot of my friends drove up, saw one game, spent one night, drove home. Yeah, you know? Saw the game over the weekend. We had to get back to work like we all did. I just want to see, Billy, Ryan and Rockos. Oh, yeah. Because I think he would put a dent on that Jello challenge that we had going on there.
Starting point is 00:56:43 You know, Kentucky is like $4,000 behind Tennessee because some millionaire came in there and donated what was like $30,000. Yeah, it was ridiculous. But I think Ryan could do some damage on some jello shows. Well, I've seen Ryan shirtless on top of the bar at KS Bar and Grill Sprang Champagne. So what a little couple of jello shots would do to our guy after a big contest. If Mike's Landing wants to have a jello shot contest here between Cumberland County and Clinton County and Wayne County, I'm on board. I'll try to help the local guys out a little bit. Again, I don't doubt you when it comes to that.
Starting point is 00:57:11 I think that you would probably come out probably ahead of everybody. All right, so here's what we got coming up next hour. Billy, I'm going to give you some cards. You're going to go to one corner and answer them. Okay. Shannon, I'm giving you some cards. You're going to another corner and answer them. Okay.
Starting point is 00:57:25 And then you don't show each other. You bring them back to me. Do we flip them over? You flip them over. Don't let your opponent see the answer because then they'll score a point. I got to. So you've got to try, you know, we'll play the first edition of the KSR newlywed game, and Mario's going to be the judge.
Starting point is 00:57:40 Okay. Mario's already said you have to be exactly right. Exactly right. Like verbatim. Okay. Verbatim. All right. So also go to the phone line, 859-2802-287.
