This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now, here's Matt Jones. All right, welcome in, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. Ryan, Drew and Shannon on this Tuesday edition of Kentucky Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Matt, I saw this morning, is in Bologna, Bologna, Italy. He's back in Italy, Walker. He was in, he was in Italy City yesterday. He's still in Italy today. So back doing a little Italy thing. So we're going to get you through here this Tuesday edition of Kentucky Sports Radio. As always sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office called T.J. Shannon, what happens? He'll make them pay.
Starting point is 00:03:38 He'll make them pay. We'll have our Don Franklin call of the day, our Kentucky branded tweet or text of the day, our Whiskey Thief Song of the Day, and our Aviation Glass Text Machine, which I have in my pocket. I need to get it out here. 502-735-3680. That's 502-735-3680. guys we've had a little confusion as we start on Tuesday morning first of all I turn on the pre-show as I always do when I'm in the shower
Starting point is 00:04:05 yeah I'll be pre-show the shower guy I listen to Shannon and Billy naked okay yeah you always say that I got to try to get that visual out of my head and you always remind me of that every day thank you for that yes every single day and Shannon thought that Tom Hart was hosting today mm-hmm Shannon Tom Hart is definitely hosting tomorrow okay okay okay okay were you confused too or no well here's what i got confused about i guess i tweeted out yesterday that nick mingeone was coming on the show wednesday yes he's coming on the show today so you thought today was wednesday when you sent that tweet yes okay i think i was messed up i thought when i was
Starting point is 00:04:45 thought he was coming on tomorrow meaning he was coming on wednesday but okay so he's on today we got that straight now for tom hart he texted me two days ago and said are you working Tuesday. So did Tom Hart just wonder if I'm working on a Tuesday? Because I'm thinking, if he's asking me, are you working Tuesday? He's asking me that because he's going to be in on Tuesday. Well, he originally was going to be on today, Tuesday. Okay.
Starting point is 00:05:11 Because we were going to be at Rupp Arena for the TBT bracket reveal. Yeah. That got moved to a different location. So Tom slid back over to Wednesday. All right. And Nick Mingeone is today. Okay. There's a lot of moving parts here.
Starting point is 00:05:25 A lot of moving parts going on today. And Singo is back today. Right. So you're sure. I'm positive. Singo is tonight here at KS. Bar and Grill at 7 o'clock. We had to move it last week because Kentucky had their, was that the Texas A&M game? I forget.
Starting point is 00:05:40 Yeah, it was. Texas A&M game. Which brings us to what happened last night. I mean. Oh, we got to talk about it. We have to briefly mention it because just to prove how close Kentucky was to winning the college baseball world series. Tennessee beat Texas A&M last night, 6 to 5. It stunk.
Starting point is 00:06:00 It really did. They won the two out of three series with A&M. But that's just how close Kentucky really was. They were one of the best teams in the country. They were that close to maybe winning the college baseball world series. Yeah, and I think we should start by pointing out Tennessee. They cheated. They should have lost Florida State.
Starting point is 00:06:16 Remember the strike that wasn't called a strike? Florida State jumps out of their dugout. They're celebrating, and the umpire says, no, get back in your dugout. We're still playing baseball. Tennessee scores like three runs to win that game. So it's not lost on me that our World Series champions are a bunch of cheaters. But you're right. CNNM and Tennessee in the championship game last night that hurt a little bit
Starting point is 00:06:37 knowing how much Kentucky or how good Kentucky was and could have been right there with them had things gone the other way. I unfortunately watched every pitch. I did too. I wanted to turn it off. Christian Moore hit a home run in like the first inning and I thought turn it off. But the remote was just a little too far away from me to get up. So I left it on.
Starting point is 00:06:54 It was just a stupid celebration of the falls. Peyton Manning's big forehead was there. Morgan Wallen throwing chairs off the balcony. Almost said Phil Former, the other coach that eats well. Hypoil. Rick Barr, all of them, and they just kept showing them. And I just kept thinking, this is too much of all is on my television. Shannon, I'm with you.
Starting point is 00:07:13 And the winning run, what ends up being the go-ahead run was that slide. Yeah. The Tennessee's center fielder came in home and made an unbelievable move, an unbelievable slide. That ends up being what proved to be the winning run because A&M made a run there late in the game. Well, to make it even worse, the over-under was 10. And we talked about on the pre-show yesterday, and Billy said, you know, they're going to be throwing their best pitchers. And I said, you know what, you're right. There's no way they're going to score, you know, over 10 runs.
Starting point is 00:07:42 And everything was looking great. It was 4 to 1 late in the game. And then Texas A&M puts up two runs in the 8th and 2 in the 9th. And one was a wild pitch. To make it 6 to 5. And I'll lose on that. So not only did I lose on draft Kings, but Tennessee wins the World Series,
Starting point is 00:07:59 it couldn't have been a worst night. Plus my EC units out, so it was a horrible night. Yeah, Shannon's sleeping in the basement right now. 90 degrees. My house was registering 89 degrees. I'm sitting here sweating. I would have been sweating it out anyway, knowing the over-under of what it was,
Starting point is 00:08:14 but yeah, not a good night. Any of them had so many chances in Tennessee brings in that pitcher that looks like a 90s country star, and I'm thinking they're going to get this guy. I don't want to like that guy, but I'm watching this, and I hate Tennessee, but I'm like, that dude I kind of wish played for Kentucky because the way he looked, and then he had that great inning where he gets out of the jam. I kept thinking we were so close.
Starting point is 00:08:35 I don't know about you all, but I was the biggest Aggie fan of all the time last night. I did everything but wear the white cadet uniform, and we just couldn't get over the hump. I'm retired as an Aggie fan. That was last night. I gave it my best. I'm done with them. They disappointed me. And another reason, of course, the poll for Texas A&M is if they win, you'll lost to the eventual world series,
Starting point is 00:08:52 and there's no shame. World Series champion, no shame in that. But unfortunately, yeah, it didn't turn out too well. I am with you about that Tennessee pitcher. He looks like Chris Farley that's got long hair and the roly fingers mustache. I don't like to admit how much I was a fan of that guy. I was too. And he looked like he was 45 years old. He did. Yeah. There was just so much balls in our face. So Tennessee wins their first ever college baseball World Series. Good for it. Now, it was another championship crown last night. And there's a reason I want to talk about this. Stanley Cup, the Florida Panthers, were up 3-0, then they lost three straight. So it was game 7 last night.
Starting point is 00:09:33 Drew, you were down there in the thick of it and didn't even realize you were in the thick of it. Not KSR Kirsten. They were up 3-0. I last weekend, don't remember the exact day, am sitting at a bar on the beach. It was a vacation. Don't judge me. It's about 1 o'clock. Why not?
Starting point is 00:09:48 And I'm looking around. I'm behaving, you know, having a little lunch. chatting with the wife. There's people like pounding shots. And I'm thinking, this is pretty aggressive around here. And I noticed they have on Panthers gear. I look at her and I was like, by the way, before I go on, hockey fans don't judge me. But I'm like, where are the Florida Panthers located?
Starting point is 00:10:06 She's like, I don't know. I'm like, I feel like, is there a game tonight? Because it just had that vibe, you know? And a normal day you wouldn't see as many people day drinking and wearing the gear. So I pull out my phone right there. And I'm like, we are 10 minutes from the arena. And game five is tonight. So we just get excited.
Starting point is 00:10:21 We're Panthers fans for the day. I considered going, looking up tickets and going, but, you know, we're on vacation. That's an event I wasn't considering. We wanted to keep relaxing. But we did get excited thinking, well, there's going to be a celebration. So we got a little pumped up to after party be Panthers fans for the night. They lose game five. The city does not party.
Starting point is 00:10:40 You know, you're on the hotel. You're watching the local news, seeing how the, you know, watching the local news stories and stuff. It's all just sad Panthers fans. We go to game six. It's in Edmonton, but we think, you know what? We're still down here. We'll embrace the culture. Jump on board.
Starting point is 00:10:53 We go to Hollywood Beach. I'd never been there. There's a Panthers Watch party. I think, well, let's just do this again. So we watched the first two periods, and they're down like 5-0. And at this point, it's becoming maybe a historical collapse as the Oilers come back. So I thought I would be part of a Panthers party for several games. Finally leave Florida and let them have their moment.
Starting point is 00:11:14 I think I KSR cursed them. Get back to Lexington and watch the end from the couch there. And I enjoyed it, but I'm a little sad. get to be a part of the celebrations after I planned on several of them the last few or the last few games as they blew a 3-0 lead to go to a game seven you would have been right in the thick of it yeah celebrating stanley cup i mean i had no idea it was going on like i said i didn't know the florida panthers were even around there i just hit pull up google and let's just see where they play and i could have walked to it right there and we're in the middle of it and i was excited about
Starting point is 00:11:43 a celebration that never happened i got to admit to you i thought they were in miami i didn't know they were it's not far off i mean i was kind of an in-between i think they'd call at sunrise, but I did not know what was going on, but that everywhere was on fire for them to win it, and they just kept losing when I was down there. Now, was that one of the nights, two, you met one of your new best friends? All right. I had a moment. We're out. We have plenty of time. We've got I have anxiety about the, I can fill my heart beating a little bit right now. I went to a bar for dinner at La Tub. It's a kind of a, you're familiar with it? Never heard of it. It's, I think it's in Hollywood, maybe Fort Lauderdale.
Starting point is 00:12:23 It's kind of popular. We highly recommended, so we went to it. And we're enjoying a relaxing night, looking over the water a little bit. Just one of my own business. Just with like a little silence, just steady. We're looking at boats, big houses. Kind of romantic for you and the wife. Yes.
Starting point is 00:12:38 The gentleman sat down next to us, and he was chatting us up a bit. He was friendly. But, you know, he sits down by Abby, calls her Catherine Heigel, calls me Ben Affleck from Timu. I'm like, ha ha, funny joke. Says something about my ears. We keep going on and on. But it's fine.
Starting point is 00:12:57 He's doing his little comedy routine. And throughout the conversation, we learned he is fresh out of prison in upstate New York. Tell me he did eight years. I just got out at a party. No one showed up. Blah, blah, blah. Pretty aggressive guy, about twice my size. But he just keeps going and going.
Starting point is 00:13:14 And again, he's being friendly, but I'm starting getting worked up just because it's like take a breath. You know, we're just trying to enjoy the water. So finally, he's quoting movies. I guess that's all he did in prison was watch movies. And he starts making fun of Forskump. And that was a little too far from me. And Abby said that's his favorite movie. And he's like, him, I can see why.
Starting point is 00:13:35 And I just put my head down. Kind of like, dude, we are not here for your comedy routine. But he keeps going. I'm sorry. I'm unfiltered. And I just looked him square in the face and said, you have to shut up and stop talking to us. And Abby looks at me like we're about to get murdered. He did just get out of prison.
Starting point is 00:13:52 Do you know why he got out of prison? No, and he had been fresh out of prison, and he was slamming shots of Jack Daniels, and my hand was shaking after I said it. I'll admit, I was terrified. He's like, excuse me, and I was like, you just have to take a breath. We're trying to enjoy our evening, and you will not stop talking. I did not come down here for your comedy show, and at this point, I have no idea which way he is going to react. Luckily, he apologized.
Starting point is 00:14:17 I even felt a bit like a jerk. and I shook his hand and was like it's just we're trying to enjoy the water and Abby looks at me and kind of like all right we're out of fear we are not yeah I'd be watching my back for the rest of the night after that I've never even spoken up to anyone like that at all and this dude was fresh out of the pen
Starting point is 00:14:34 but I had to tell him to shut up I'm proud of you because you're there with Abby on your own vacation you're at a nice dinner and the guy's like totally peeing in your Cheerios he was being nice it was just a little little you know I'm thick-skinned. I don't care. You can talk about my ears. It was just one thing after another.
Starting point is 00:14:53 And I'm looking at the bar. Like, is this guy going to stop talking? And finally, it took me a few minutes to get the courage. I snapped a little. It's like, you got to shut up. And then at that point, the look in his eye and the shot of Jack in his hand, I thought, I don't know. I don't know which way this is going to go, but it had to be said. I saw Drew nearly in that same situation when we were in Philadelphia at that bar. Remember that bar that night, Drew? The guy would just not stop talking and just wore us out. also out of prison. Maybe it was.
Starting point is 00:15:20 He was, too. That's right. He was out of prison. They both were out of prison. That's right. Maybe we're just a magnet. Maybe so, yeah. Well.
Starting point is 00:15:27 But that was my Florida trip. I, well, if you want to call in and defend, Drew, 859, 28, 8,000, 2802, 287, I think you'll get a lot of defense. What would you have done that situation? That's it. I mean, it's just one thing after another. And you're trying to enjoy the night with your wife. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:42 Really, it was the poorest comp comment that it was probably too much. Yeah. He hit my eyebrows. He got those two. It was just one after another. 859, 2802-287. Drew's vacation short. I think I put myself in that position.
Starting point is 00:15:59 I probably said, hey, man. No, I'll tell you exactly what I would have done. You would have crawled under the table. No, I would have said, come on, let's go. We would have left. You can't let them bullet you out of where you were hanging out. I probably would have just gotten to pay my bill. Let's go someplace else.
Starting point is 00:16:13 And we probably would have left. That would, there was no bartering around. We had no option but just keep sitting there. He actually left. So I won the battle, but I don't recommend doing that. And we're glad you're still alive. 859-2802-287. That's the Clark's puppet shop phone number.
Starting point is 00:16:27 We'll come back, take your calls. Got some UK basketball notes. We want to talk about the next segment. And then UK baseball coach Nick Mingeon calling in at 1030. We'll talk to him. We come back in on Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed the game. This morning, the internet lost its mind.
Starting point is 00:16:42 Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happens. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise. Breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves. Their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real.
Starting point is 00:17:06 From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer-beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context, and ask the questions everybody wants answered. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Trip Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Starting point is 00:17:45 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth?
Starting point is 00:18:07 Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose
Starting point is 00:18:22 on my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. Life throws hurdles big and small. The question is, how do you conquer them? On Hurtle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness,
Starting point is 00:18:39 professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going. From the WNBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't feel like.
Starting point is 00:19:01 Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ledecki. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face like. up and smile. That means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can, like, I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:19:35 Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levin this went to a billion-dollar fraud.
Starting point is 00:20:12 But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Starting point is 00:20:45 Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:21:08 Yeah, Drew just said, sometimes you've got to tell a guy shut up. It happens. It happens sometimes. 859-2802-287. That's our Clark's Puppet Shop phone number. Ryan, Drew, and Shannon here this morning. I know we never talk about Stanley Cup, but there's two more things I want to just talk to you guys about. Shannon and Billy on the Preachia were talking about the cup itself and everybody kisses it.
Starting point is 00:21:32 Yes, they pass that thing down the line and all the players make out with it. But then the players all get to take it. keep it for a couple days everybody then kisses it their family it's like the thing to do with the I do love the fact they let this beat up old trophy get carted around for the next year by whoever
Starting point is 00:21:50 wins it but Shannon and Billy were right everybody everybody's kissing that thing I mean we're not that far removed from COVID remember remember that and now we're all just like you know smooching it and you know everybody's saliva you know presumably gets on
Starting point is 00:22:06 it's disgusting to me and they just pass it the line. Everybody has their way with it. It's disgusting. The kissing aside, and I'm not an NHL fan, but I think it's the coolest trophy we have, how you just get to take it around. There's photos of guys with it. They're sleeping next to it. They're taking it on vacation. They're taking it out to dinner and putting at the table across with them. It is neat how it just becomes this prop that they, I mean, I think as far as I know, everyone gets to have a share of taking it wherever they want to take it for a while.
Starting point is 00:22:32 You stole my words. I think it's one of the greatest things in sports that they let the winning team carry the trophy around, take turns for the first. the next year. It's over 100 years old. It's dinged up. It's probably seen things that no one needs to know about, but they just keep saying, yeah, go do whatever with it. Now, the other Stanley Cup controversy that's going on right now,
Starting point is 00:22:50 the guy that they named the MVP of the finals was on the losing team, Connor McDavid. Can you be the most valuable player of a finals championship and not win the championship? It's very rare. I was trying to think of truly it's happened in other sports in the past none are coming to mind but I mean you don't a lot of times I'll bet the like picking the MVP ahead of time just because you assume it's going to be on that winning team whatever you're thinking Super Bowl all that stuff so it is very rare but I guess I guess he did
Starting point is 00:23:25 it shows you how much he deserved it that they put him over the top of anyone that was on the Panthers doesn't sound like he's very valuable if this team lost I mean you're so valuable you didn't even win like how does that make sense I'm kind of with you. Yeah, I mean, you've got to have the winning team have the most valuable player. You've got to. You win the championship. Somebody on your team needs to be the MVP.
Starting point is 00:23:46 Even if the dude did it score to every goal for their opposing team, it doesn't matter. You did not win. You lost. Right. Now, I do like the Panthers player. I'm going to try to look up his name on the fly. But he grew up with Jason Tatum. They're like in videos when they're like five years old going to the same school in St. Louis.
Starting point is 00:24:04 Went to high school together. They're like best friends. and then they win trophies back to back in the pros. There's so many pictures of them where they are tiny, and they're like good friends growing up in St. Louis. So that's pretty neat for two high school. It looks like they're best friends close to it, winning an NHL Stanley Cup and the NBA Finals trophy.
Starting point is 00:24:22 Just a couple weeks apart. Yeah, that is pretty cool. I'm sure St. Louis will find a way to bring those two home and have their own little parade. So some UK basketball notes kind of breaking yesterday in the last couple days. one was that we know the date for the Gonzaga game, December 7th in Seattle. So what is sold? They were at Rupp this past season.
Starting point is 00:24:45 Seattle, Nashville, I believe, next season. Yeah, they announced that yesterday officially. We're going to Bridgestone for a regular season game. That'll be fun. That'll be awesome. Oh, yeah. I'm more excited about that than this other game in this series is they're going to play Gonzaga in Nashville. We know how UK Big Blue Nation takes over downtown Nashville.
Starting point is 00:25:03 Yeah, that'll be a lot of fun. We've had some great memories in that town in the SEC tournament. It'll be nice to do a regular season game, one that will be so big. I already have people already making plans to be it. That was not even a date on it, but just calling their spot, saying they want a seat. The St. Louis game, what day do you think we'll leave if it's the seventh? I mean, it's going to take us a while to get there. There's no doubt that'll be the game that Matt wants to drive to.
Starting point is 00:25:28 It's December 7th. But remember he said we're going to the UK Austin football game, which is near the end of November. We won't make two trips that close back to back. Well, Austin, Texas is on the way to Seattle in Matt's Atlas. True. Maybe we could just hang out wide, spend Thanksgiving together somewhere, Arizona, California, Vegas.
Starting point is 00:25:50 Yeah. We'll just do the whole thing. Any other circumstances I'm with you, I think Matt might be putting us in the car, but I think we'll be able to escape this one. We'll see what happened. And then what's the story with UK announcing, well, I guess Rupp Arena announcing, They've got the new floor.
Starting point is 00:26:04 The floor is back. Now, is it the floor that they used that we lost to UNC Wilmington? It is, but we're not thinking about what happened on that floor. We've had a reset button, the Men and Black memory eraser. I don't even know what you're talking about. Never even heard of UNC Wilmington, but the beautiful remodeled K. K. Woods court is back in place. Cody Figer, who has become our greatest social media assistant coach of all time,
Starting point is 00:26:27 revealed it yesterday. So it is back in place. I know we wanted it to get back last season before the. the season ended and never got to see it but it uh it is here and it would be there for game one i assume now the reason they took it out they said there were like dead spots in the floor i assume they've got all these kinks worked out and the floor is fine dead spots i'd say that too that's why they lost that game to you and st wilmington there were dead spots in the floor this let's put the old steamer to it and got those bubbles out and it's back but
Starting point is 00:26:55 i'm glad it's back everyone's glad it's back and we got uh they had a recruit take a picture on it Braille Mullen's. That's the next topic. That kind of helped reveal that the court, I'd say he had an official visit on Monday. I think it's the first photo shoot we've seen on that court, so we will also credit him with the grand reveal. And he got an offer. He comes in, gets the official visit, got walked away with an offer,
Starting point is 00:27:18 Brayland Mollins. Is that a name we need to keep an eye on, I guess now? Absolutely. He's a four-star guard. On three has him as like the ninth or tenth-th-ranked shooting guard in the 2025 class. Kind of new to Kentucky's radar. picked up that offer, but yeah, now we know about him, thanks to him that court photo. NBA draft is tomorrow night.
Starting point is 00:27:38 Drew and I will be bartending here at KS Bar and Grill during the NBA draft tomorrow night. Ryan, do you know how to fix a drink? I know when you pour a beer, you're supposed to like tilt the glass. Yeah, right? Tilt the glass so it doesn't get all foamy. You want a little head on there, even though some people say they don't. You want a little bit on there. Just a little foam.
Starting point is 00:27:54 It's good for it. Ryan, if I said I want an old-fashioned, do you know how to do that? No. I like old-fashioned I can make you one. So I think if it comes to that situation, we'll have somebody else back there to help us. Well, yes, I also work for
Starting point is 00:28:08 Kentucky SportsRadio.com, and the draft is a big night. So I guess I'm going to have to put a computer in the corner and write my Reed Shepard and get our graphics out while making an old-fashioned with the other hand. Is that how this will work? You're going to leave me with the masses
Starting point is 00:28:21 while you go do your job? I mean, I am employed by a website that covers the draft, but yes, we will make it work. I'm looking forward to hopping back there with you. Last time we were back there, we were spraying champagne. That is very true. The first football game of this place. After they be in Florida, that's right.
Starting point is 00:28:35 Rob Dillingham, in anticipation of his historic night, Wednesday night, getting drafted, bought his mom a brand new house already. I love it when you see stories like that. And I love it that Rob already taken care of his mama. Oh, yeah. That's the cool stuff you see with these guys moving forward, getting mom a house. I'm excited to just see what those guys wear tomorrow night. I think Reid will probably go with a traditional.
Starting point is 00:28:58 additional look and Rob will be one of those that are talked about for years to come. But Reid was on fine bomb yesterday, checking in from New York City, talking about taking the family out to a steakhouse that night. As two guys that are all-time favorites, it's just exciting. It's finally here for them. So when we come back, we'll have Nick Mingeone, UK baseball coach. We tried to get him to come in, but I think he may be out of town, probably taking some time off, so he's going to call in.
Starting point is 00:29:22 We'll get to talk to him a little bit. We have Singo. Don't forget tonight here at KS. Bar, NBA draft tomorrow night. And the part of my take podcast guys taking over KSR radio show Thursday morning. And I have an MVP in a losing effort. Who's that? Richie was MVP with 51 points in the championship game they lost to Ballard. I think you're right about that.
Starting point is 00:29:43 There's an answer for him. We don't even have to go to a break and look it up. We already know. Richie was named the state finals MVP the year that they lost to Ballard. I'll be dang. All right. Well, take our break. Come back.
Starting point is 00:29:53 Join Nick Mingeone here on Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed the game. This morning, the internet. lost its mind. Starting point is 00:34:37 All right, welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio. Ryan Drew and Shannon here, and we're honored to be joined now by the head baseball coach of the UK batcats, the wildcats, and their historic run that they just made to the College Baseball World Series, Nick Mingeoan. Coach, thanks for joining us. Congratulations. Thank you for taking all of us and all a Big Blue Nation on this great. run you guys just had this past season. Oh, I love doing it with you guys.
Starting point is 00:35:03 You know, I just so thankful that our people, the Big Blue Nation, got a chance to see us win really three championships on our home field. We had a chance to watch us win the SEC on our home field and the Big Blue Nation showed out and then we won a regional championship and then a super to go to Omaha for the first time. and just so thankful that we were able to give so many people those experiences that hopefully they'll remember forever. Once you got to Omaha, you immediately made a point to recruit the locals to be fans of Kentucky and the ones back home watching.
Starting point is 00:35:42 We thought that was very cool to maybe have a little more blue from the local crowd there. What made you decide to do that? And then we saw Mason Moore with the fireman's helmet. Were there any other things we don't know about where Omaha embraced you and just how special was that to have them behind you? You know, I went there in 2013 when I was at Mississippi State and we played for the national championship. And I just remember how much the people of Omaha and the state of Nebraska, like, that's a big deal to them. And you guys saw it and I'm sure you felt it.
Starting point is 00:36:13 And so I just remember thinking like, hey, how can I do this for our players and our fans? Like, how can we win these people over? And I just thought, you know, and it was really the night before that press conference, I thought of that. And I was like, you know what? Hey, there's some people that here, they don't really have favorites and they're still trying to figure out like, hey, who are we going to root for? And so I did the best job I could just explaining them about what a special team. And you guys know this. But I was just hoping, guys, that on that national scene, being on ESPN, all the coverage, all the media coverage, that people would just get more excited about Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:36:53 not just our players as individuals, but our team, our state, our institution. I just didn't want to miss the moment for people to just keep saying Kentucky, Kentucky, Kentucky, Kentucky. And yeah, it was really cool the next day. The local fire department heard about that. And we call Cam O'Brien our firemen. He set the record for appearances.
Starting point is 00:37:13 Like every time someone got in trouble and had runners on and we need to take him out, we bring in Camman to put the fire out. They kind of caught wind of that. And they made us a UK helmet and we weren't in dug out. It was pretty cool. Now, we saw the great crowd that showed up for the regional and the super regional here at Kentucky Proud Park, like over 7,000, almost 8,000 people. You go out to Omaha and the Big Blue Wave, Big Blue Nation does not disappoint. It was just, it was awesome.
Starting point is 00:37:38 You can hear the go big blue chance, you know, come through the TV. How awesome was it for you guys and sit in the dugout and see the blue that was all there to support you guys? Yeah, it really was amazing. and in a lot of ways a dream come true because you guys know this. This has been an opportunity of a lifetime that I've gotten. And this has been our goal from the very beginning to not only take a team there, but to win the national championship. And to be able to go there.
Starting point is 00:38:12 And quite frankly, there was a lot of people that asked me, like, what do you think is going to happen? Are they going to come? And I'm like, hey, we've never been here. We don't know. but you got to think they're coming, right? Like, I mean, you got to think, you know, and people are like, I don't know what to expect.
Starting point is 00:38:26 I don't know. Are they working? Are they not working? Did they plan their vacations already? And to your point, just like the Big Lunation is done all year and for the last couple of years, they have not disappointed. And, you know, anybody I know, we have such a huge following with you guys with KSR. And I don't know, if they could just hear my voice,
Starting point is 00:38:44 just a sincere appreciation for the time, the effort, the energy, the resources. That was not a cheap trip. And so I'm just, I don't know all the money they've spent. I don't know all the sacrifices they've had to make, but guys, we are so thankful that they did. And hopefully we gave them an experience and something to be proud of. It looked like one Wildcat in particular was having the most fun, and that's your son, Reeves. I thought it was really cool. I don't know who asked it, but he got his own question at the press conference. I thought that was awesome. He answered it like a pro. Maybe you should send him out every once a while. He looks like he can do some press conferences, but on a serious note,
Starting point is 00:39:22 you know, that was kind of around Father's Day. We saw you celebrating with him in Lexington with the Supers. Just overall with this season, the success you had and having him next to you, how special was that having him by your side? You guys, anybody that has a child, it's just they know, and then us being children of our parents, You know, we make it as coaches, we make a lot of sacrifices. Like, we really do. And I can tell you guys this and I don't mind sharing. But I haven't had a day off since January 4th.
Starting point is 00:39:57 I've worked every single day and just poured my heart and soul into this place. You know, we play every Friday, Saturday, Sunday. And then we're in the office on Monday. And we're getting ready for our game on Tuesday. And we play on Tuesday. And we're traveling on Wednesday or preparing on Wednesday. We're practicing on Thursday. And it's just a nonstop.
Starting point is 00:40:12 So we really spend more time with other people's kids than we do our own. So when you get to just have those experience in those moments, Drew, I was overwhelmed by emotion. Like everything, like for eight years, just building for that moment. And I'll get emotional now just thinking about like, wow, we did it. Like we gave our players and our fans. I've been there. Chris and I have been there. But our people didn't know.
Starting point is 00:40:41 So it's just like, man, and then to do it and just like, man, he was running at me with his arms like wide open and like, you know, it's like even like I could just, you know, it was, man, it was overwhelming. It was overwhelming. And then to spend Father's Day, I told Reeves that morning, I said, Reeves, we woke up and I snuggled him in the bed. And I said, Reeves, any Father's Day with you is good. Any Father's Day. Awesome. But to be in Omaha with Kentucky and have a team and our fans here, I was like, all right, this might be my. my favorite one yet you mentioned your players and the fans but also just seeing like
Starting point is 00:41:16 Doug Flynn was there Keith Madison made the trip I saw some former UK baseball players at the airport heading to Omaha what about the alums who fought for that and never got it but still you know they felt it your team making it many of them off even making the trip to see it for themselves yeah they were a part of it and anybody that's reached out I've just hopefully I've done a good enough job and guys I'm still I'm embarrassed to tell you this the most stressful part about all this has been for me I still have 500 unread text messages like I literally have not stopped like I've responded to some and it's just like I put my head down and like I hope I've done a good job and I still a lot of them I still have to get back to all these people because that's
Starting point is 00:41:58 how we've built this is through personal relationships right and and all their hard work so like we wouldn't be here they've helped laid the foundation everyone that's ever put on this uniform has a piece and was a part of this. And you can't just do this on your own. And it wasn't just one team. It wasn't one group. I mean, it's been everybody. And guys, I saw a couple guys out there.
Starting point is 00:42:17 One of the guys texted me and he's like, coach, he goes, we have 10 guys from our team coming. And then I think I saw Eddie Brooks out there. Oh, yeah. And I saw Eddie Brooks out there. And he was like, hey, I think there was seven of us here. Like, there was so many. And it just meant so much to our guys. Right.
Starting point is 00:42:33 Like, because this is their program. This isn't my program. it isn't anybody else's program. Like there's going to be another head coach and there's going to be other one. But the Kentucky baseball program hopefully will be here forever. And it's like we all done our part and we've all made the sacrifices. So it's like to have all them there. And then Coach Madison, like we had them on our flight.
Starting point is 00:42:54 I basically said like we're not leaving this program. That plane is not leaving without Coach Madison. Like he has to be on that thing. Like he deserves it. 25 years he put into this place. So we weren't taking off without him because we wanted to make sure. that we honored. You know, we couldn't honor everybody, as you know, but they were all a part of it, and they're the reason why we're here. It's pretty cool. Nick, I wanted to jump on here just to
Starting point is 00:43:15 congratulate you on a great season and just talk about how much fun it was to watch your team, the approach that you have to the game, you know, playing aggressively on the base paths, but also the get weird motto that you guys sort of adopted in the dugout as well. How did all that get started? So we played, we were playing pretty well early in the year. And then all All of a sudden, we played Kennesaw State at home. And guys, they took it to us on Friday. Like, they beat us in every facet of the game. Well, then Saturday we played.
Starting point is 00:43:46 Beat us in every facet of the game. So Sunday, I'm like, all right, we just got punched in the mouth twice. Like, this has been our real true test of adversity, and let's see how the team respond. And we barely hung on for a win on Sunday, and I was so mad. Like, I was more mad after the win than I was the losses. and because of the way we won. Like, hey, I can get beat. Like, I'm fine with that.
Starting point is 00:44:10 But if we're aggressive and we're attacking and we're competing and, like, maybe we just didn't execute, I can live with that. They're 18 to 24 rows. They're not going to be perfect. But the way we went about it, like on Sunday, it was not good. And they saw a side of Coach Minge that they did not like. And I flat out told them, like, either you're going to fix this or you're going to, you're going to hate me.
Starting point is 00:44:31 Like, I'm going to pull this competitive spirit out of you. and I'm going to make you guys play for each other. And if it means as a result that you're mad at Coach Minge, but that's not how Kentucky baseball play. That's not how we act. So I got after him good on Sunday. And then Monday I was able to collect my thoughts. And I basically met with the team.
Starting point is 00:44:50 And I pitted a picture of how I would want them to act. Like, hey, we can compete at the highest level, but also have fun. You're not having fun. Is that fun? Did you have fun? They're like, no. I'm like, well, that's going to change. Like, we're going to have fun.
Starting point is 00:45:01 But first, we're going to compete hard. And we're going to pull for each other. So this is really cool, and this is a really long answer, but I'll kind of land this airplane. But Nick Amarotti, who runs our offense and Trevor Fitz, our director of player development, they were, I coached them, their former players from Mississippi State. And I told them about the 2013 National Championship team that we played on and how every inning that dugout was awesome. They labeled themselves the bench mob. And every inning, they did something interesting.
Starting point is 00:45:27 They did like a freestyle rap in the third inning, and they tried to get that to work. They chew certain bubble gum. And then they sat in the seventh inning. matter what, everyone sat on the bench, and if you scored a run, you had to come to them. They did not get up. Like, they just had all these little antics. Yeah. And I'm like, so why don't you guys do that?
Starting point is 00:45:43 And they're like, like, and one of the guys, I think was like, like, get weird. I'm like, whatever. And if you go overboard, I'll be the one to kind of pull the reins back, but it's yours. Have fun. And then they just started, that was on Monday. And then we played on Tuesday, and we fell behind like four or five nothing. And guys, they truly believed they were, they were having fun. They were starting some of the dugout stuff.
Starting point is 00:46:03 And they just let loose. They just started playing free. And we came back and we won the game. And I remember telling our people, like, we got our team back, we're good. And each game, they just kept getting, I don't know, more weird and weird and pulling for each other and getting more comfortable and playing more free. And really, we played great ever since. Let me get one more before we get you out of here.
Starting point is 00:46:24 Are you on vacationer? You out of town right now? Is that right? Yeah, I wish, guys. No, there's no way. I'm here. We've got recruiting going on. We've got a camp going on.
Starting point is 00:46:34 Just hung up the phone with an outfielder did 41 minutes with him trying to, you know, just we're recruiting. Yeah. This is like the busy time, you know. Well, we – Time to build for the next home haul trip. That's right. We talked about this last week, but I want to get here to comment out before you have to get out of here. On Father's Day, at our Father's Day church service, one of our pastors, Ethan, played the clip to you of you, to our congregation about how you were on the podium.
Starting point is 00:47:02 and you talked about what somebody asked you what a great week this was for your program you talked about well it's not just that my son got baptized this week you know and we've seen you know get down on one knee after a big win we we saw you almost break down we're in tears when you were talking to ESPN after one of the victories you're talking about how you know only god could write this you're not only would it played here in lexington there was a church in newburgh indiana that i know that played that clip you got to feel proud of that that the message that you're delivering by this platform you've been given. Well, I am, and this is what I've wanted to do.
Starting point is 00:47:45 I just wanted to give God all the honor and glory. I don't want this to be about anything or anybody else, and just to make sure that, you know, it was the best three weeks of my life. It was literally the best three weeks of my life. And just thankful that the Lord gave us those opportunities. Yeah, it did. It started with that regional week. And, you know, they did the national seeds. And we were the number two national seat on a Monday.
Starting point is 00:48:13 And then Reeves stood up in front of the team, told him about what he decided and how he was going to get baptized and invited the team. And that Thursday, the whole team showed up voluntarily at our house and our backyard where he got baptized. And then Friday we played the regional game and we won. And we played Saturday and we won. And then we played Sunday and we won. And fast forward to the next week, we're in a super regional. and the guys just have an unbelievable week of practice, and we play on Saturday, and we win, and Sunday we win,
Starting point is 00:48:39 and we celebrate. We go to Omaha for the first time, and then we go to Omaha, and it's like, all right, first college game for Kentucky. Let's see what they're going to do. Walk off Homer. I'm like, there's no way. Like, come on, Lord, like, you're like, you're showing off now. I'm like, God, you're showing off.
Starting point is 00:48:55 That's what he's doing. He's just showing off. And just, like, giving our people, like, this unbelievable blessing. And so I've just tried to be great. grateful. And yeah, it's just, whew, I still get emotional thinking about it. The rest three weeks of my life and just want to make sure I honored him through it. So, yeah. So thanks. Well, man, congratulations. On behalf of everybody, a big blue nation, thank you for taking us on that ride. What a great ride. We look forward to do it again. Maybe next year then. Now you've got to back it up. Now you've got to go make another run next year. No pressure. Yeah, that's exactly why I've got to charge my phone 10 times a day because I'm trying to find the next future cat, fun, right ones. You don't know. I mean.
Starting point is 00:49:34 I try to find the right one. Well, thank you, Coach. Thank you very much. Thanks, Nick. Enjoy a little downtime if you can, and we'll talk to you soon. Thank you very much. Yeah, I appreciate you guys. Go catch.
Starting point is 00:49:43 All right. Nick Mingeo and head UK baseball coach. Man, I got a little lump in my throat right there. When he's talking about that, you can tell how emotionally he is and how emotionally invested he is in his faith and his players and his family. Yeah, you can tell how special that was. But my takeaway is that he hasn't had a day off since January 4th. Mitch, just let him.
Starting point is 00:50:02 I know he's got to recruit. We've got to build. He's already hitting the portal, but just let them get a little R&R, maybe 24 hours of it and recharge those batteries. Go down to Florida and get in a fight with some guy, just got out of prison and tell him to shut up. You know, whatever you need to recharge your batteries. We all got to do that.
Starting point is 00:50:15 He said some people had pre-planned vacations, couldn't make it. I'm one of them, but I wore my pink bucket hat in the pool, in the ocean, everywhere I went in Florida. So I was one of those people supporting from afar. We'll take our break, come back, go to the phone lines, 859-8-0-2-287. Ryan Drew and Shannon here on Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game.
Starting point is 00:50:35 This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves. Starting point is 00:55:07 Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio. Got a little segment here before we have to take our break, and then we're Trigg County's coming up at the top of the hour. Do you guys do your Trigg County homework? No, I don't need to do homework. That's the Penny Rile. That's the second region. Oh, yeah. I've been to Trig County once or twice.
Starting point is 00:55:20 Who's this sponsored segment by? It is sponsored by UK Federal Credit Union. And I just say who's his sponsored by? Yeah. Yeah, that's a Ryan. At this point, we just let it go. It's a limendism. Who's a sponsor by?
Starting point is 00:55:32 It was a segment sponsored by. Wow. Well, with that introduction, let me talk about U.K. federal credit union, the official credit union of the University of Kentucky. UKFCU is an award-winning and best places to work winner. And it is KSR's favorite place to bank, too. I have their mobile banking app, and I love how easy it is to navigate. Give him a chance. It's sarcasm. It's supposed to be funny. You know, they put Calipari on the hot seat after the 2015 season for crying out loud.
Starting point is 00:57:12 Well, I think that's what's going to be most interesting. They did jokingly put him on the hot seat when Cal was rolling. That was kind of their bit. But now that he's gone, I feel like they have to address that. They'll have lots to say about Mark Pope. I know on their show they've said good things in the past about him. So I know I'm looking forward to them. And this is trying to what year it's been.
Starting point is 00:57:31 These guys are huge and they're still doing this, so generous to them to show up. I hope everyone listens and give them some feedback because it's big for KSR to have them. It's the number one sports podcast in the world every year. And if anyone else asked to do this today, it would be a hard no because they're so busy. And their show comes out on Friday, and they recap it. You know, they always play the best of KSR on their own show, so it takes our audience, Harvey, Edy one year, and it makes that national. I said Annie, it was Edy, yeah. All right, well, take our break, come back, Trigg County, you're on the clock.
