Welcome to Hour 2 of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now, here's Matt Jones. Welcome back to Kentucky Sports Radio. Drew Franklin here with Jack Pilgrim, Maggie Davis, and Billy Rutledge, who I believe lives in this studio. He was just here when we showed up,

so he's sticking through the show. What are you doing here for this, Billy? Got another show? I got to stay here for a little bit longer. Exactly. That's my point. It's not football season, though. Football and basketball season, I literally do live here.

You see those twinkie, that twinkie box over there. I'm still not through it, but I do spend a lot of time with it. Do you have a cot? Like, do you just have like a little air mattress somewhere? No, and the couches aren't comfortable enough for me to sleep here after a 2 a.m. postgame show, but the old studio, I did. I slept in the studio at least twice. So you listeners are learning people like, how do I get a fun sports media job?

How do I do this? Well, you start when you're 11 years old like Jack. You do everything your high school will allow you to do like Maggie. or you just never leave like Billy. So that's my advice for getting into the business. Apparently we're supposed to be eating Twinkies. I noticed that the other day when I was in here for Tom Leach, and I didn't know the story,

and I was frankly a little scared to ask. But now I feel like I know that they're yours. It feels okay. Yeah. Whenever you need to pick me up, you can have one of those Twinkies. They're fair game for the office. I'm trying to see how long they'll last.

But at the box, it's like three feet tall. It was our Christmas Secret Santa, where you exchange gifts, and I had to steal it from somebody to secure it. Christmas, but it is July 2nd. I don't know if we could be farther from Christmas. I mean, you look out at our studios and you wouldn't think that with all the Christmas decorations up right now. I guess we should note that. Did we, so our listeners know, I heart, we have a beautiful downtown studio. I always feel very important when I come here. There's like, you know places that have TVs with

just their logo on it that you're fancy when you have a whole TV just to show your logo, but we walked in this week. There are Christmas decorations everywhere. Am I going crazy? Did we ever take them down? Are they up for July? What's happening? No, they just appeared Monday. I think it's a little Christmas and July celebration, but you're right. There are how many TVs in this room, five, and one of them actually plays actual TV. The rest are just for show and to show you the logo. Well, if you want to watch TV today, today's a good day to watch TV on the SEC Network because it is Kentucky Takeover Day.

They do this every summer where each of the SEC schools get an entire day with 24 hours of programming. It started at midnight with the Kentucky Women's Basketball win against Florida. at home in Rupp Arena on Alumni Day. We pull up schedule, see what you can be watching. Now, right now, it's got a little football at Louisville, volleyball at 2.30, got baseball versus Vandy tonight, gymnastics, just lots of Kentucky sports on SEC Network throughout the day. But Billy, I feel like we need to go to the phone lines. We've been very long-winded, had a nice guest, and we've kind of forgotten our callers, so who's up first? Can you hear me? We can hear you. What's up? Hey, what's up, guys? I've been a long-time listener, first-time caller. Thank you very much. I want to congratulate all you guys on all your success. I'm down here in Union County, and I end up with a buddy of my run a real successful business as well.

And I know that you guys probably like me juggle a lot of balls. It's something I've always wanted to ask you guys, what keeps y'all up at night when you, when you, are seeing the success that you've had, the things that y'all have done and accomplished? What worries y'all at night? What keeps y'all grinding every day? That's a great question. I appreciate the call. And thank you for calling in from Union County.

We'll get started on Union County soon. Last night, what keeps you up at night is hosting this show. I don't know if you get this way, Billy. I only do this a couple times a year. Get a little anxious. You got to make sure you know all the news. You've got to know your topics. You can't just show up and hope someone else is going to have the information.

so at least last night I didn't get much sleep getting ready for this. Listen, these summer shows can make you a little anxious when you have to drive the ship. Shannon and I kind of alternate on who brings the topic each day for the pre-show. And when there are no sports going on, you do get a little anxious about what am I going to talk about? How early is it early enough to mow the lawn? Things like those topics that you have to think about that aren't just on a site that you can look up. So I think we take for granted a little bit, Matt, bringing in his book with 10 topics, because it can be tough to think of things that.

people care about and would call in about. So I'd absolutely agree with you. And there's, there's no feeling like, all right, there's dead air and I'm the one driving and you got to have something. I mean, Matt's not exaggerating. You got to be sharp posting radio. Dead air. That's bad radio. And here's the thing. If you're not genuine, if you're not honest, if you're not yourself, I think the listeners can tell. So actually, the best radio comes, I think, from when you're relaxed and when you're just, you know, talking about things that interest you. But a lot of times you want to put on a good show and you want to get down a topic list and it can feel fake. So I think, you know, being comfortable in your being yourself is the most important part in radio.

And being comfortable by sleeping here on the car. And yeah, being comfortable in general, sleeping and becoming a morning person for this show. We hear from Jack a lot and I'm in the KSR group text. I actually talk to Jack too much. So I want to ask Maggie. What is a day like for Maggie at BBN tonight? I mean, uh, walk us through a little day in the life of Maggie when you're working. Yeah, I love that question. It is different every day. which is why I love it. I know you guys live this life, too. You never know what's going to pop up in the sports media world. So every day is a little bit different. But in general, I go into the office, Sally X-18 here in Lexington. And I start, you know, about 10 o'clock in the morning, same as you guys in the morning, trying to come up with what topics we're going to talk about that day.

We are a little more confined to sports specific. I don't remember the last time we talked about how early is too early to mow the grass. But, you know, you do what you got to do. The good thing about BB in tonight is we talk about every single sport on campus, pretty much every single day. even if it's a dry time for football or for basketball. Luckily, baseball went on such a huge run this year. That gave us a longer window with that team. But it's great. I mean, we've been talking a lot about the TBT tournament. We've had plenty of track news going on.

Gymnastics had such a big season this year. You know, we really cover all of the bases. But it's a lot of just coming up with the topics. I write the show every day. We do 30 minutes just about UK athletics five nights a week. So it's a lot of time to fill booking interviews, stuff like that, preparing for interviews. and then we tape our show. After we tape the show, I put the show on our website.

You get to cover a lot of things that aren't just UK. Saw you at the Derby, interview in the little Candy McPeek. What was that like? Derby is, I'm not joking, probably one of my favorite days of the year. I'm from the state of Kentucky. I grew up watching the derby. Derby is so huge in my own family. My dad loves horse racing.

So it really has been part of my life as long as I can remember. So to get to work at an NBC station where we cover the derby, I mean, really all week, but Derby Day itself is 12 hours pretty much on TV almost the whole time. And the last few years I've been able to anchor it with Keith Farmer. And it's been such a blast getting to do all the research, all the prep work. And then, like you said, the interviews afterwards have been awesome. So I chased Kenny McPeak around the track this year, literally. I mean, I stood on the track where the horse is finished and then figured out, obviously, who won, who the owner was, who the trainer was, realized it was Kenny McPeak.

Obviously knew he had just won Oaks the day before, too. I have a huge hat on. So I have the advantage of, like, I have a little radius where people can't get too close to me because I'm going to bump him with my hat. So that gave me a little bit more space to move around until I could find him. And then it was really just chasing him from there. But as dressy as we get for derby, I do always wear tennis shoes. So I'm very good at chasing whoever wins the derby. So that worked out.

The year before, I had just had shoulder surgery the week before Derby, which in hindsight, terrible idea. So I was in a sling. So that year was a lot harder. And so this year I had two whole arms to use. So it was a piece of cake. So you interviewed the Derby winner right after he wins. And then we accidentally found the horse in the barn.

I don't know if I've ever told this story, but Keith and I were just driving around after Derby a couple hours afterwards. And, you know, the backs, we're on the backside. That's where our car was parked. That's where all the barns are. And we're driving around and Keith mentioned something like, I wonder, you know, if the horse is back in his stall, he's just hanging out, normal night.

This horse does, I mean, I don't know. People have a lot of opinions on if horses know that they're in a race or not. I think that they know, but I don't think they necessarily throw themselves an after-party. So we're like, let's go see what the vibe is. It's very easy to find because there is an after-party. And we're kind of trying to keep our distance, and all of a sudden all these different, I don't know if they were owners or friends, jockeys, all these people.

And they just were like, hey, you two, do you want to come feed them? We're like, yeah, sure. So we got to feed the derby winner this year, which was pretty crazy too. So always a lot of good derby stories. One more Maggie's story I need. You know, you do all the UK stuff. We've even seen you MC and Rupp Arena, but you've also interviewed the biggest sports star on the planet right now.

Ms. Sidney. No, I'm not a sports star. Sydney McLaughlin. I know you've talked to her in the park. past. What was it like speaking to her? She's awesome. So I talked to her before the last Olympics. Hopefully I'll be able to get her on a Zoom call again this year. I mean, she can't be that busy, right? No. But a couple years ago, obviously, it was so different with the COVID Olympics.

So I will never forget this. She talked about how she had to train for those Olympics. Obviously, all of their normal facilities had been shut down. So she moved, I believe it was to Los Angeles and would train on the medians of different roads and would just run all of these like street sprints because she just needed to be outside. She couldn't be around a lot of other people. And I was just picturing the fastest woman in the world running up and down the 405. I have no idea how that was enough training for her to do what she's done now for the past several years in this sport. But she was unbelievably great to talk to and so cool to see all of her success on the international stage now. She's a role model for a lot of little girls. Hope they're

not out just running in medians now. We don't condone that. No, that's only Sydney gets to do that. That's one of those things you can only get away with when you're an Olympian. Well, she's special. Billy, do we have anyone on the phone? We got a few. Oh, look at this. Who we got?

Yeah. Y'all are doing a great job. Thank you. I got a question, but I do need to tell Jack, you before the season, when the season and ends, you need to send Jackson Robinson the link to that podcast and let him know what he started that night. Hey, I thought that was great myself. I was laughing the whole time.

My question for you all is, you've interviewed a lot of people over the years. So what is the most either uncomfortable or just, I don't know, I guess uncomfortably the right word, question that you either ever had to ask a player or a coach or, or, you know, you? or you just came out and asked. It's a good question. We appreciate the call, Andy. Thank you, Andy. Well, I just asked it.

Yeah, we know Jacks. I interviewed Mark Stubes right after he rehired Eric Wulford this year. I was a little nervous about that one. Obviously, everybody knows the story of how Coach Wulford left the first time for Alabama, and then it was sort of awkward the way he came back, and people certainly had a lot of feelings about it. I didn't know how Stoops would be, you know, if he would sit down and just want to chitchat about it, if he was going to be very serious, if he even wanted to talk about it.

But obviously, that was the main storyline. So we had to talk about it. So started the interview. And he was super loose straight from the beginning about like, ah, you know, in Youngstown, we just worked things out on our own sometime and did a little bit of this. And it worked out super great. And I think it's going to be a great relationship again. But it was, I was a little nervous for those questions. I was a big line when he said that, because you're right, a little bit of a controversy higher.

The fan base was like, what are we doing? And he immediately shut it down. Now by saying, we handled it Youngstown. Yes. Ryan asked this recently, so I've already shared mine, Billy, other than making Aaron Harrison uncomfortable and ruining the entire listening audiences day, do you have any interview moments, whether uncomfortable, funny, awkward, anything that stands out from you? Jack, you're talking to these guys all the time. I think going back to some of my early days, like E.J. Montgomery was one where, you know, you're in your head when you're interviewing somebody and you're new at this, you don't really have like this storage been.

of a bunch of questions built up. So you just kind of have like three or four and hope that they kind of get you through the interview. But then there are some people that are just so short-winded. Like E.J. Montgomery would give you like a three-word answer and he'd kind of put you in the spot like waiting for your next question. So like there were a lot of really uncomfortable like, I don't really know what else to talk to you about, buddy.

Like UK sent you out here. I have to ask you questions. But I don't, I literally don't have anything else to ask you. So a lot of those, like you go back to those old clips. and they were like seven minutes with Kelton Johnson, 12 minutes with Tyler Hero, 38 seconds with E.J. Montgomery because you're just like, buddy, I don't, sorry, that's all I got for you. It can be difficult when they're new and getting new to the media and the media training. But, you know, a lot of them grow out of it. Some of them. Some of them don't. Sometimes you get an Oscar that's just like you stick the microphone out and they just go.

We do these holiday segments every year too. And so every year around Valentine's Day, I have to ask the whole team about their Valentine's Day plans. and some of them get more weird about that than others. And I have to always be like, it's literally not for me. It's for the segment. Like, I'm asking you for TV. So, are you busy? No. And I'm always like, so you have any big point?

So I normally always ask about who like the most romantic guy on the team is. So we'll see who it is on this year's team. It's C.J. Frederick ran away with it his year. Obviously, his relationship with Blair Green. Their wedding is coming up as well. So sometimes that's an easy question. I think they all picked Reed Shepard last year, a little high school sweetheart situation. So we'll see who it is on this year's team, but those can be really hit or miss.

I have a quick, uncomfortable one. I have at it. A young Billy R Sports worked for the College Heights Herald leader. Where is that? College Hides Herald was the student paper and Bowling Green. And, you know, I wanted to be the football writer. I wanted to be the basketball writer. They put me on the swimming and dive team beat my first year.

Nice. And months later, just a couple months after I got the job, the university suspended the program for five years for hazing and sexual assault allegations and young Billy R. Sports had to ask a couple tough questions to the A.D. and some of the coaches there. Of course, I didn't get much comment, but I did at least ask the question back then. When you took that job, you probably didn't know how serious it was going to get. I thought you'd just be covering their little bloops, the fluff piece. I was trying to learn the sport. Is that the official event, the little bloops?

When they land and that, I don't know. I don't want to disrespect diving. They do a good job. I'm sure you did a good job covering it, too. I don't remember, but I did. I did. I did do a good job on the basketball and football beats. Well, I don't feel like I'm doing a good job hosting KSR because I just looked at my notes. And we haven't done Union County. We haven't given away tickets, got ad reads to do. I'm doing my best, Billy, but it flies by when you're driving. I thought we'd cover a lot more of this before we go.

They have a tent set up in front of Stockton Mortgage, the building. Not too far from the high school, but got a great crowd here. A lot of his teammates, family. J-Bion actually just pulled up about five to ten minutes ago. So they're about to get this thing started, and it's a great turnout so far.

Mario, I heard that there is an ice cream truck on the scene. Have you gotten your ice cream yet, and what flavor are you choosing? I have not. So it was the first thing that I, first, thing that they told me, since I got in, was that they had ice cream. But I haven't got a chance to get an actual scoop of it. I'm looking for flavors here. I'm over here.

They got hats. They got sunglasses. But I don't see the ice cream. I don't know where the actual ice cream is. Well, we'll find you some ice cream. We got matters to cover first. I know this is your first commitment ceremony. It's a number one player in Kentucky.

He's down to UK, Alabama, Auburn, Miami. We don't know where he's going to go. Some people pick Bama, a lot of picks for Kentucky. But we wouldn't have sent you there if we weren't confident. So we're excited to hear more about Campbell. We're going to let you get in there and actually watch it, but then we'll check back in with you after he makes the commitment and hear what it was like.

I feel like he'd be sleeping here with you, sir. If he learned to work this board, I may be out of a job. So just hope that he doesn't learn everything around here.

So I put on a little makeup for radio for the first time in a while. So I can't believe you guys made me do that. But no, it's okay. I have to put on makeup for TV anyway. So I just got ready a little early.

He's prioritizing what actually matters because apparently the on-site scene is just tremendous right now. It's like Nick Rosh is there. Adam Luckett's there talking about how it's like this ice cream truck. There are all the different flavors. It's a Stockton mortgage presentation, which I think that's growing. I think that bodes well. But apparently it's the place to be right now. I'm getting a little fomo, a little jealous that I'm not there.

I was going to do the show there. That's always fun. But as Billy said, we just don't have any bodies around here. So if someone went wrong and we were in Frankfurt, there would have just been Werewolves of One London playing for two hours. So we weren't able to do that today. You know, things worked out with the Cutter Boli announcement when we went and did that. But schools are also notorious for bad cell phone service and tough getting connected.

So luckily it's all working out and giving Jack and Maggie a chance. to shine a little bit. And that's why we have Mario on the scene by phone. He's doing a great job. Excuse me. We're joking about the ice cream, but just a reset before Campbell makes his decision, he is the number one ranked player in Kentucky. He's 135th in the country, the 12th best defensive linemen in the country. And here in a few minutes, he will pick between Kentucky, Alabama, Auburn, and Miami. It's crazy. This dude never played football until his junior year. He was a basketball star at Western Hills, the all-time leading score in basketball, all region. And somebody said, hey, try this football thing out, and pretty soon he'll be committing to a major program.

You know, we're running out of sports. We were doing very well in the NBA. Baseball, you know, Matt's usually here to talk about the Reds. We'll do that another time. I want to focus on a little Copa America. Our United States bowed out of group stage last night, losing 1-0, completely unacceptable for the U.S. to not advance from the group stage in the knockout round. Might even see a little coaching change there.

That's been the buzz this morning after disappointing showing in the Copa. but we're going to focus on the teams that are playing today. And I have our resident soccer expert straight off the cot in the corner. Billy R. Sports is popping in. But I'm going to butt in first because we just got a yachtsy. Right on cue. There it is. I see a UK hat.

We see a UK hat. We see a UK t-shirt. Ladies and gentlemen, J. V. Campbell, the number one player in Kentucky from Western Hills High School. He is a wild cat. Meow. That's my cat noise. That's how excited we are.

Jack, again, we don't know what he's saying. but we know that's a big get. You cover recruiting. Just the importance of keeping a guy in state, Vince Mero, Brow White, doing a good job with this one. And this is the time that you want recruiting momentum to pile up. This is where a lot of these summer decisions are made. And you want a guy like Javion to anchor your class.

You want him to be kind of the centerpiece. When you are going up against the biggest of dogs in college football, it helps to have the big dog on your side. And Vince Mero, getting Javion Campbell, top 150 prospect in, in the nation, number one player in the state to get him over the likes of Alabama and the best of the best in college football. It does not get any better than this to get this thing rolling. We like to produce on air, so I'm just going to be honest with our listeners.

I spoke to Vince Mero, and he said JV.I. and Campbell will call, but also Vince, we have a show that ends at noon. So I'm just saying there's a chance JV.I. and Campbell could be on the show before noon. We might run in. The clock might beat us. But who knows, by the end of the show, maybe we'll check in with him. Regardless, a great get for Brad White's defense, adding an edge, as we said earlier in the show, a basketball player that just decided to try football out of nowhere, and then the phone just starts ringing it off the hook. About every school that matters, you can think of him gave a call. He ultimately decides on Alabama, Miami, and Auburn against Kentucky, then picks Kentucky in the end.

J. V.on Campbell is a wildcat. Back to our Copeland, America, that transition. That was subtle. Yeah. Well, I mean, I didn't think he'd do it. Let's be honest. we cover. When has a recruit done it right on the spot? I thought we might be waiting another 20 minutes just for him to pick a half. Five. Great first impression. A punctual high school kid,

A plus. Love it. Great job by Western Hills, too, for getting that done. Great to have them as a cat. Billy, you're not running from your soccer expertise, though. Okay. Let me find my phone. A lot was happening there. Well, you know, we already have to call for the firing of the USA soccer coach, Greg Boltholter, whatever his last name is. He should. He should be fired. It's ridiculous. They were eliminated last night with their loss to Uruguay, and that is not living up to the standard of the UF soccer. But nevertheless, we will continue to watch Copa America. Because we love America and Copa, and you love soccer, which is why you're going to pick these games. Matches.

Games or matches? What do you want to call them? I'll call them a game. All right. Here we go. I'm going to parlay these four picks, all whatever you're doing. The four games today. And I'm making you pick the winner or a draw.

We're doing a little three-way here. Well, I think we're at the round of 16, so I don't know how they would draw. I guess it would be a draw before they start extra time. Yeah, the draw. Yeah, that's how that counts. We'll just go winner then. Good point. Brazil, Colombia.

Who you got, Billy? You know, Brazil's been disappointing in this tournament, but you see the name, you know the history. I can't bet against Brazil in our first pick. They're a minus 110 favorite, so give me Brazil. Drew. All right. Billy likes Brazil over Colombia. Last time we did this, I think I said I would join the Serbian army if they won and they did,

so we need to be careful over here. But Costa Rica and Paraguay. Paraguay. How do you say that word? Paraguay, I think it's how you would do it. Costa Rica had a pretty disappointing loss to Columbia, but they did play Brazil close earlier in this tournament, so they've been up and down. But nevertheless, they are a huge underdog. I think I'm going to go with the favorites here. Give me, I don't know a name on the roster, Paraguay, to keep this part like that. They'll have gone with two favorites early, typical. Argentina plays Ecuador. Argentina is the favorite.

It has to be Argentina. Messy is winding down. He wants. won his last World Cup. He'll participate in. Argentina is, I think, the most winningest country in this tournament. I think it's a no-brainer. We're going a favorite again in Argentina. That one's Thursday, by the way, the first two are today. And then on Friday, Venezuela versus Canada. Billy, I know a lot of people are waiting for your breakdown on this. How do you think the Great White North will play against Venezuela? Canada's got a lot of talent. A lot of talent. Yeah. And that's all I'm going to say about that. Do you think they're in group A?

Get it? No. E-H-H-A. Hey, there it is. Anyway, it took a second. I can in good conscience bet against our neighbors of the North. So give me Canada and all the talent that they have on that roster. You know these are my neighbors I probably know a lot of those 14,000 County seat Morgan Field Great Place Sturgis another great place They have well formerly had the Little Sturgis bike rally. Oh, is that right?

Where there's the big Sturgis went to South Dakota. Sturgis, Kentucky had little Sturgis. But years ago, there was a lawsuit, and they had to stop calling it that. So now I think it's called the Kentucky Bike Rally. But in a town of 2000, it brings 15 to 20,000 people a year. It's just coming up in a couple weeks. There you go. A lot of leather, maybe some things you shouldn't do, but they do it anyway.

Hell's Angels are there? Billy, are you familiar with the Hells Angels? No, no, not familiar. Stay away from them. They're a tough bunch. But you think you hold drone at a motorcycle rally like this? Don't put me on a motorcycle. Don't even put me on the rally.

I don't have enough leather to be able to keep up. But maybe when in Rome, if I remember out there in Union County, it'd be something cool to check out. Sounds like the Morgan Field Corn Festival each September is more your speed. Another popular attraction in Union County. Maybe go to the Feed Mill Restaurant. Okay. I like that. I went to TripAdvisor, fourth best restaurant in Union County.

A little place called Long John. Silvers? I would like to see the top three. So Union is doing well. You said you had some facts. Yes, they have one of the, it's home of one of the largest underground coal mines in the country. It's one of the top coal-producing counties in the state.

So if you're a friend of coal, you're a friend of Union County. We're big friends of coal out west. They're growing a lot of corn and soybean out there. It's one of the top agricultural counties in our state as well. Dwayne Casey, the longtime NBA head coach and current head coach of the Pistons, I believe? I don't know if that's still right. He's currently unemployed, I believe. Unemployed. Okay. So he's still out there, but he is a notable person from Union County.

And how about this? Abraham Lincoln gave his only political speech in his native state of Kentucky at a rally in Morgan Field. Amazing stuff, Billy. Really good stuff. Dwayne Casey is, he's Mr. Union County. Is he? I mean, 50% of my notes are Dwayne Casey. I mean, he's a legend. Before we get more to Dwayne, let's say. name the founder of Maybelline. Did you know about that? No, no.

Thomas Lyle Williams. Okay. Maybe she's born with it. Yeah. Maybe she's born with it. Maybe it's Maybe he was from you. Who knew so much about Union County? Cassie DePava.

I hope I'm saying that right. She's a soap actress. She was in Guiding Light, Days of Our Lives and won a daytime Emmy. We have Ed Johnson, who was a Major League Right Fielder for the Washington Senators. We have Larry Johnson, someone I know a lot of our listeners know, played at UK in the mid-70s.

There's a big piece on Joe B. Hall's teams. He was an all-SEC player in 1977. It was drafted number 24 overall in the second round of the NBA draft by the Buffalo Braves. I just read Jack Givens book. He mentions Larry a lot, play with him, and mentions Wayne Casey, who, as Billy noted, he was the NBA coach of the year in 2018, played for the cats, played for Joe B, came back as an assistant under Joe B, then was an assistant under Joe B, then was an assistant

under Eddie Sutton. He was wrongfully implicated in that scandal with Chris Mills' father in the Emory package. He had to resign and couldn't go to the NCAA for five years, but then it was later proven he had nothing to do with it. So Dwayne Casey got screwed over a little bit on that. I think Marsha might have hinted it that earlier this week talking about Petino. Marsha's call was iconic, not to interrupt, but I inject that into my veins. I'd say she had a little Dwayne Casey in mind when she was talking about assistance taking

the fall. But Jack, I know you cover basketball. Well, you're very familiar with Dwayne Casey, an absolute Kentucky basketball legend. And how about that Dwayne Casey, a big part of the reason why he went to Kentucky, was because Larry Johnson was his best friend. So you kind of got a two-for-one with both of them, all-SCC player and Larry Johnson, then obviously Dwayne Casey, an all-time legend in his own right. That 78 championship team had a lot of Union County in them.

I also like that Jackie Robinson began his professional career while a lieutenant at Camp Breckenridge in 1944. To be kind of a small place, a lot of legends coming out of Union County. I mean, Larry Johnson and Dwayne Casey, we're two of the first African-American basketball players at UK. That's a huge deal. Currently, it's still in high school. We have the Rainey Brothers.

I think we've talked about them on this show before. People don't realize that two of the best wrestlers represent America go to Union County High School. Is that right? The photo of the 2024 U.S., like the World Team competing in the worlds, there's 10 people in the photo. Two of them have on Union County Letterman jackets.

Jordan Rainey and Jayden Rainey, their twin brothers, I believe they're only juniors. They're being recruited by all the wrestling schools, Iowa, Illinois. Jordan Rainey was the last year's World Greco-Roman champion. He didn't just make the team. He beat everyone competing in the world as a junior at Union County. So these guys, we're going to be hearing a lot more of them. I don't know if you follow wrestling.

I know it's not a hugely popular sport, but the future of America wrestling is in Morganfield going to Union County. Right. So, Union County, not only representing their county, but their country. I love some of those notable alumni, and we have a special caller on the phone that can give us more stats if we have time to do that. Absolutely. Who's on the line? I believe Adam is on the line who says he's the judge executive of Union County. Why am I talking about Union County? Adam, you tell us about Union County. Hey, Drew, that's a pretty good rundown, man.

Thank you. You covered a lot of bases there. I'll just say the only thing that really, or one thing that caught my attention, we're not one of the largest coal mines. we are the largest coal mine. Tell them about it. And we are the largest producer in the state of Kentucky. By far, it's not even close. We've produced twice of our closest competitor. They hire about almost 900 people out there,

and man, they're turning out the coal, hot and heavy as we speak, actually. Give me one more fun fact about Union County and a reason why you love living there. Well, the reason I love living here is the people. We are hospitable, kind to our nature. We love helping people, and that just pretty much defines who Union County is as a whole. So it's a great place to live, very rural. He's right.

We raise a lot of corn and soybeans, and we produce wrestling dynasties here as well. We've won eight of the last nine state championships here. So it's a pretty good place for. for our wrestling program and our football program is on the up swing too so we're excited about that i need to know a better restaurant that that you go to than long john silvers what is your go-to what is the the best kept secret in union county you cannot knock the breakfast at long john silvers there we go did you just say breakfast yes it is fantastic i'm a frequent flyer there um oh my goodness it's actually very good you can get anything you want there

and it's really good. We have Peak Brothers. We, you know, the feed meal is good. Pick Brothers is kind of a nationally known barbecue place as well. It's very good. We have a lot of great place. We have new places that are opening as well. You know, we have some of the standard Mexican restaurants that are very good.

So great place to visit. Come see our Moffat Lake. We have some cool cabins to stay in. It's a beautiful place to be. A lot of cool things happening in Union County right now. Well, thanks for calling in. I completely agree with everything you see. said, except maybe the Long John Silver's breakfast.

I don't know if I'm ready for a cod biscuit in the morning. No. But Union County is a great point. does lifestyle. Is it mom talk? I don't know what you call it, but she's got her kid. She's got a million followers on Instagram. She was on the amazing race. So Mallory Irvin, another proud of Morgan,
