Welcome to Hour 2 of Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Now, here's Matt Jones.
All right, welcome back. Hour number two.
Ryan Drew and Shannon here, Kentucky Sports Radio, live at Dave's Deli on Georgetown Road.
1045, Georgetown Road, Dave Carroll is the owner here.
He's been a big partner to KSR for many years through Red State Barbecue.
Awesome, Red State Barbecue.
So he's opened up the deli here, and Drew, he made us some sandwiches we ate during the commercial break,
and I'm really wanting to eat a little bit more.
I didn't get enough right there.
Well, I also didn't get enough.
I was talking to Billy, looked up the show started, and I have had zero bites of Dave's deli,
and I'm considering putting my headset down.
Look, I have a fork right here in my hand, and I haven't had a bite yet, so I might disappear.
Get there before Ryan does.
Shannon and I didn't at least any time getting in there.
How was the chicken salad?
It looked delicious.
It was very good.
There's a grilled cheese that have six different kinds of cheese.
And bacon.
And bacon on the grilled cheese.
Well, you all missed a good conversation with Billy.
Well, we didn't miss it.
Well, thank because we were eating.
I think we won out on that deal.
So, you know, we've been trying to finish up our list of counties that we started, oh, you know, way back in 2020.
When COVID hit, Matt started the rundown of the counties, and we were all the way to our good friends at Wayne County.
And before we get to it, we have our Kentucky-branded tweet of the day.
Ah, let's go.
from our friend Corey Price.
You may know Corey.
He says, I look forward to John Shortcon in
and asking if Little Wayne is related to Wayne County.
Ah, there you go.
Any can.
And he can.
So, Shannon, we'll start with you.
What do we know about Wayne County?
Well, of course, we've got Monticello, right?
And Monticello is home to the Conley Bottom Resort.
Oh, love it.
Which is a place that we have done many shows throughout the years.
Now, it burned down just a few years ago.
Have they rebuilt that?
Yes.
Do we have an update?
Oh, yeah.
They've rebuilt it, and it's better than ever.
It's still, to me, my favorite place to go to in the state of Kentucky.
And I'm not kidding.
Really?
I think Conley Bottom on Lake Cumberland is my favorite place to visit in the entire state.
The memory that I have most of being at Conley Bottom is the year that you actually stripped down behind some canvas that we held up in front of a live crowd, by the way.
I did.
You stripped completely naked, naked, and put on your swim trunks and then jumped into the lake.
Yeah, they had a slide.
Remember on top of one of those little houseboats there at the dock, and I went down it.
Yeah, I was not going to waste any time, so somebody brought me some swimsuit.
You guys held up the curtain.
I changed, dropped drawer, put the swimsuit on and jumped in.
Yeah, so if you haven't been there before, I would highly suggest you go there.
It's a beautiful part of the state.
You can rent pontoons, you can rent cabins.
It's just, I love it.
It's beautiful.
I believe Bob and Jamestown even had his boat there.
Did he know that at that one?
It's state dock.
I know he's been in state dock in Jamestown.
Okay.
So, yeah, Conley bought him definitely the highlight of Wayne County for me.
What about you, Drew?
They call that area the houseboat capital of the world.
Is it Somerset?
Is it Wayne County?
In my research last night, I saw a few Wayne County websites claiming it.
I saw some Somerset websites claiming it.
Is it more just the general area is the houseboat capital of the world?
I think there's quite a battle going on.
Who gets to claim the title as Houseboat Capital of the World?
Shannon loves it when cities do that anyway.
Yeah, I mean, if it can't be proven, then you don't have a claim.
Well, Monticello's claiming it.
Wayne County and Monticello's claiming it right now.
I mean, they're our feature county, so I'm giving it to them for the next hour.
We might revisit it, and we've already done to Pulaski Day, I guess.
So Wayne County wins out.
You're the houseboat capital of the world.
You've got to show me, like, based on number of houseboats,
like we can count them to prove, like, who has the most houseboats,
and then we can call you the houseboat capital of the world.
Otherwise, you can't just show up and go where the houseboat capital of the world.
You got to have some numbers to prove it here.
You got to back it up.
You're big data, Gavick.
I am.
Show your research.
That's right.
That's right.
I think Monticello, they actually make the houseboats.
So that's why they're, I think their claim is.
So they make the most houseboats.
Okay.
All right.
So there you go.
You can back that up with numbers.
What else?
You know, Wayne County was named in honor of General Anthony Wayne.
What did General Anthony Wayne do?
He was a revolutionary war hero.
So he just did lots of heroic things during the war.
And then they got his own county.
How about that?
Mr. Wayne.
Next.
What do you got, Ryan?
What did you bring to the table?
We've got to talk about the Monticello Pool Hall.
That's the cheeseburgers and their burgers.
The big takeaway.
I mean, not only, and I'm going out on limb here,
Conley Bottom, to me, is the best place to visit in the entire state,
and the Monticello Pool Hall has the best burger in the state.
I'm saying it right now.
That's my hot take.
A huge claim.
I feel like he's sucking up a little bit.
Are you trying to get a lake weekend before the summer's over?
Yes.
In that case, I too love Conley Barham.
It is the best place in the world.
So what makes the burger so good, is it because it soaks in the grease that's been there for 50 years?
It's the flat top griddle.
You just let it sit there soaking its own stuff.
And I believe they only put ketchup, mustard, and salts on it.
I think so.
Pretty standard.
And they protect the ingredients.
It's a big secret down there.
And the pool hall, of course, there's been cigarette smoke and burgers and all kinds of...
It all meridates in that, right?
marinerates in that, but they protect that
with the ingredients, that
menu, like it's Fort Knox
Gold. Yeah, and it's my favorite kind
of burger, the big smash burger,
get the little gristle, real thin.
You know, some people, they need the half pound.
I don't want that. I want the
greasy, sit in its own grease, give it the
little press, and then I'll take that one.
Do you remember when we went, we did our show there in
Monticello, and we walked out of the pool hall,
because somebody recommended it. I remember walking in thinking
this is going to be, and I ate
like four of them. I seriously,
They were that good because they're not big.
They're kind of like little sliders almost.
They catered OVW, right, Shannon?
Yes, I think they did as a matter of fact.
Did they?
Yes.
Yeah.
When they did a show down there at the lake, I believe they brought them over.
Now, one of the most famous politicians from our state is from Wayne County.
Howe Rogers.
That's right.
I mean, if you think Mitch McConnell's number one, Howe Rogers might be number two,
living politicians in our state.
He's as famous as anybody.
Got his own road out there?
Got his own road for crying out loud.
the Howard Rogers Parkway, so he's very famous.
But there are two controversies.
We've got to talk about involving athletes.
Oh, are we going to athletes now?
Go ahead.
Go ahead.
Well, I was going to say, did you realize that Wayne County gave us the song,
Man of Constant Sorrow, featured in the...
I love that song.
Oh, Brother Where Art, though?
Did not know that.
Well, because Dick Burnett is from Wayne County,
he was a fiddle player who wrote the song,
Man of Constance's Sarro in the early 1900s.
Really?
If I may, me and my fork here, that wasn't used.
Can I use this fork to,
proclaim that the whiskey thief song of the day
even though we're not playing it can we make
a man of constant sorrow
yeah I think that works okay man
if you can find it that'll be a song we gotta play before
the hours over if I like that our whiskey thief song of the day
all right here's our two controversies and we have
to settle them right now
all right
Kenny Davis
was born and went to Wayne County high school
went to Georgetown College
was the captain of the
1972 United States Olympic
basketball team that got
hosed over in Munich.
Remember the gold medal?
They put more time on the clock.
He basically, as
Captain decided, we are not accepting
our silver medal.
And even, I think, in his will, it says
not anybody in my family
will ever accept a silver medal
on that team.
Well, he now lives, since he
retired in Garrett County.
So, like, Wayne County tries to claim him,
and Garrett County tries to claim him, because he's lived there
for many, many, many years.
Who gets to claim
Kenny Davis.
Can we not split them in two?
Well, that might be a little difficult.
Well, I mean, everybody gets to claim Abraham Lincoln,
so why can't two different places claim him?
Now you make a great argument.
Yeah, half of Kentucky claims that Abraham Lincoln lived there, was born there.
I think he's going to be in Wayne County in my history book.
You said that's where he's from.
It's where he played.
To where he played high school ball.
For me, it's Wayne County.
You will always forever be from Madisonville.
Yes, I've been in Lexington.
It's almost half and half.
I'm a few years away from split my life in both places.
At the end, it will be a lot more Lexington, but at Madisonville will always be home.
I think we got to call him a Wayne County.
I think he is a Wayne County.
I'm sorry, Garrett County, but did you remember we did a show at that bank in Garrett County,
and they're like, oh, no, Kenny Davis is from here, and it started quite the conference.
And I believe there's still a little bad blood going on down there about.
Who gets to claim Kenny Davis?
Sorry, you don't get them.
You can't just claim other people's athletes.
This isn't Arkansas basketball.
I mean, we've got to have some quorum around here.
Well, he's one of the greatest ever play at Georgetown College, and he's still alive,
so Kenny Davis, we're giving, Wayne County, we're giving you Kenny Davis.
Here's the other controversy.
We talked about it on this show when it happened.
Rodney Woods had been the Wayne County basketball coach for years and years, like 30 years,
and a new superintendent came in and let him go.
This is the controversy we were kind of figuring out when Matt was around, right?
Didn't someone call in?
Yes, somebody called in and told us about it.
Some bad blood between the two.
Is that what started this?
Yeah.
What's the problem?
Something about that the new superintendent's wife didn't get a job one time?
And I thought, small town politics.
It's holding in those feelings for all those years.
And then said, ah, I'll get even someday.
There's a new superintendent in town.
You're out of here.
So, yeah, that's still going on down.
And you have, there's one more athlete tie in.
Yeah, I have a famous athlete.
If anyone is out at the Isco Championship today
watching Josh Teeter play a little PGA tour of golf,
just know he is not the best athlete in his own household.
Wait a minute, he's a professional golfer.
I don't care.
He's a good golfer.
I love Josh Teeter.
But his wife, Ashley Bell Teeter, formerly Ashley Bell,
from Monticello and played basketball at Georgetown College.
So as Josh, this week's about Josh, really.
He's in Kentucky with the PGA.
He'll have the biggest crowd out there at Key and Trace.
But on Wayne County Day, we're going to focus on Ms. Ashley Bell Teeter, his wife who had a great basketball career.
So she was an all-star athlete in her own rights.
From Wayne County.
From Wayne County.
Yep.
We're putting her in our Wayne County Hall of Fame.
And we hope on Sunday she has a new trophy in her house that Josh brings home.
I did skip over one other thing I want to talk about in Wayne County in Monticello.
There's a log cabin in downtown Monticello.
Just this log cabin.
It was relocated into downtown.
town. The reason
I'm bringing up, I know nothing about this log
cabin, except they said it was built by a guy
whose name was Raccoon John
Smith. Oh, I bet that was the
best built cabin that ever existed.
Anybody who's name, can you
trust anybody named Raccoon? Oh, yeah, that's
a good person right there. You think you can?
Yeah. Like, they go out
and pull weeds with their hands. They're not using the
grandpa's weedies. This is with a conversation we had yesterday.
Michael Jordan, Michael B. Jordan had to
add the B. This guy, they went up to him,
Dude, there's some pretty famous John Smith's right now.
And he's like, you know what?
I'm Raccoon John Smith.
I'm Raccoon John Smith.
Raccoons are like shifty little thieves, though.
They wear their even a little mask.
They're like trash often.
Amen.
All you want to steal your stuff.
Disparage the good name of Raccoon John Smith.
I'm saying that's probably a good man there.
He built a log cabin.
Built a log cabin.
How many log cab is that you built?
That still stands today.
Exactly.
So salute to Raccoon Smith.
If you were one to buy a cabin or a house today,
is there any thing, anything on our table?
checklist or are we good? I'm just trying to walk you into. I think we've cleared off our
Okay, I was just I didn't know if you were looking to buy a log cabin these days. Oh no no I just
I was going to help you out there. The only reason I wanted to mention it because of the dude's name was
Raccoon John Smith and he earned his shout out many years later on KSR and how long has that been
built? It's a long time. I mean like termites could have eaten that thing up but no no no no no
Raccoon Smith. Raccoon Smith cabin you went your cabin built the right way you contact Raccoon
John Smith. That's right.
So that wraps up Wayne County.
That means that
who's next?
Raccoon John Smith died in Mexico.
I feel like there's a story there.
I got to look this up.
He's great hair, too.
We've got Whitley County.
Is Whitley County next?
I should be Whitley.
No, we got Webster.
Webster.
Webster.
My neighbors.
Whitley, Wolf, and Woodford.
Those are our last one.
That's that raccoon, John Smith, right there?
That is.
I got a handsome young man.
Oh, excuse me.
out in Mexico, Missouri.
A little different.
A little different. A little different.
A little different. Did he build a log cabin there, too?
I don't know.
But good man, that raccoon, John Smith.
Now, we do want to give a little word of caution to our friends in Wayne County.
We just went through you.
We highlighted you on KSR.
You guys highlighted Union County last week, and then they had tornadoes last week.
That's right.
Bad ones.
We keep saying it, and it's just looking more and more like it's the case.
But my side of the state is kind of becoming a heavy tornadoes.
tornado area. It is. We've had some serious damage, unfortunately, some fatalities over the years,
but Morganfield had a pretty big one. I don't know. I didn't see anything, you know, severe damage or
anything too bad, but it was a gigantic tornado it looked like on the video. People were
tweeting out. Yeah, Dawson Springs has been hit twice in the last couple years, and of course,
the Mayfield got hit down there. So just heads up, Wayne County. I did, I didn't think of one more
Wayne County thing. It gets a little lighter than the severity of tornadoes.
Or raccoon John Smith.
Right, especially him who died in Mexico, Missouri.
Wayne County, if I'm not mistaken, Cardinals?
Yes.
Okay. They're the high school that I always see where it looks too much like Louisville.
Because I think their Cardinal logo is pretty similar. It's red.
And you get down there to Houseboat Country and you think you're going to be around BBN
and you see them walking around and it just throws me off a little bit.
So Wayne County, I know it's too late to change your colors and your mascot, but you're just a little too Louisville.
at first going at sometimes.
You've opened up a door of a question.
Do you want to add something for a...
No, just something about Raccoon Smith.
Oh, wow.
That interests me more than what I was getting ready to say.
Don't mind me over here.
No, go ahead.
Shrew up.
Do we know how he got his name?
I'm very curious.
Well, it reportedly resulted from him saying he lived in such a remote location
that his only neighbors were raccoons.
Thus, Raccoon Smith.
Raccoon Smith.
There you go.
How about that?
You mentioned about the Wayne County Cardinals.
It seems to me like, out of all the high schools in Kentucky,
there seems to be more Cardinals than any other nickname.
I don't know if this is true.
Probably Corey Price, somebody could look it up.
Scott County Cardinals, GRC Cardinals,
South Laurel Cardinals, Wayne County Cardinals.
It seems like there's a lot of Cardinals.
I don't think that should be the fact.
Well, there's a simple answer for this, Ryan.
Okay.
Do you know what our state bird is?
The Cardinal.
It probably has a little something to do.
I'm not saying I agree with this behavior.
That wouldn't even be our state bird if it would interrupt to me,
but that's probably why.
Well, the bigger problem is we need to change the state bird.
That's true.
Yeah.
Make it into a spatsy or something.
See, maybe.
Sure.
Robin, there's a lot of those.
One more thing about Raccoon.
He was, look, this guy built log cabins, but he was largely self-educated with no more than six months of formal schooling.
Really?
He had six months of school.
The guy could build a log cabin that lasted 200 years.
How about that?
And him and Abe Lincoln lived everywhere in the state somewhere probably some of that.
So listen, keep us up.
and the raccoon John Smith Facts for the rest of the show.
Okay.

So you're telling me the guy that wrote this song is from Wayne County.
That's what I'm telling you.
Wow.
Yep. Dick Burnett.
Dick Burnett.
That's right.
He was a fiddle player.
Did he used to hang out with Raccoon Smith?
No, he was partially blind.
He was.
Yes.
The more we get into these counties, the more fascinating stories you hear.
That's right.
That's why I really like doing it.
859-2-8-7.
Now, Todd's been holding for like an hour to talk about.
No.
Oh, Todd.
Did he really?
Todd, if you call back, we'll get you on.
I was thinking about Todd while we were yapping.
I knew.
Todd, if you call back, we'll get you on them in an hour.
We need a caller from Wayne County, and Todd was our caller.
And then we talked too much and didn't get him on.
So we call us back, Todd.
859-2-80-2-202.
287. Super Mario joins us now. We've got a good crowd coming in here for lunch.
Dave's Deli. Did you try any of that? Yes, I did. Mac and Cheese. I didn't get a chance to try
the other stuff, but the mac and cheese is pretty good.
Now, I want to get Mario on because he went to his first big league baseball game
the other night. Oh, Reds? Yeah, Reds. Did they actually win?
They did win. Wow. Well, what a shock that was.
Yeah. That was a really don't win, huh? And I believe it was against the Rockies.
Yes, it was.
who are, they're equally as horrible.
So you saw a great game.
Great game.
Uncle Matt gave you the tickets and got to sit there and his great seats.
Great seats and wonderful seats.
The crazy thing about the game, there was a storm coming in, so they had to shut it down, I guess.
And, you know, they bring out the mat to cover up the field.
Yeah.
Basically, you can see the rain just coming in, coming in, and then everybody jumping out their seats,
and then they ran under the tunnel.
So, you know, it was a great experience.
The thing that I liked about it the most, I would say, is the firework.
They pop off the fireworks as soon as someone hits a home run.
So that's very cool.
And I think KPP should definitely get that.
You're there for some of the Ellie Mania?
He's had quite a week.
Ellie De La Cruz?
Yes.
Was the crowd going nuts for him?
They love him.
They love him.
But yeah, he's wonderful.
That's an awesome park to go to.
And those are really good seats.
I have one gripe about Great American Ballpark.
When you go into the concession stand area, you go through, and it's all self-served.
Yes.
Like they get all the food there.
You pick up whatever you want.
But then you go and you ring yourself up, and then they ask you for a tip.
they want you to tip after you get your own food
and then wring yourself up
they say tip
tip tip for what I did all the work
you're not tipping them huh sham am I crazy
do you get to keep the tip?
Yes you bought a hot dog or something that they prepared for you
oh so tipping the cook
tipping the cook okay but what about that beer that I just grabbed out of the
cooler myself I got to tip them for that too I don't think you should
okay it's just
Mario did anyone play the match game while you were there
it's like something on the screen
everyone's really bad at it no one's ever got an answer right
Just wondering.
Only one person is bad at it, and he's sitting at this table.
No, it's a really challenging game.
I think most people, yeah.
What is this match game?
They take someone out of the crowd and embarrass them in front of thousands of people,
and it haunts them for the rest of their life.
It happens at every game.
I thought you would have seen it.
Maybe they stopped doing it after I was the last one.
Did you delete that from the Internet?
I think we could find it.
No, it's out there.
I actually watch it a lot to make fun of myself.
859-2-802-287.
We do have some callers, but Todd, if you're listening,
call back, we'll get you on.
So who we got, Matt.
Oh, Todd.
Let's go, Todd.
Tell us a little Wayne County.
Come on, Todd.
Yes, thank you for letting me speak on Wayne County.
Wayne County is the heart of Lake Kermlin, which is why their tourism site is heart of Lake Kermlin.
Not only do we have the city pool hall and Conley Bottom.
We've also got Beaver Creek Marina, Mill Springs Mill, Monticella Country Club, nine-hole golf course in the middle of the city.
And you've also got many, many campgrounds.
So if you're a camper, look, check it out.
There's all kinds of campgrounds to go to in Wayne County.
Musicians from Wayne County, you've got Kevin Denny, who had hit songs years ago,
and the current home of L.B. Shane, who had the number one hit,
country hit a couple years ago, called My Boy.
My Boy by L.B. Shane.
All right, Matt.
Try to find that.
We'll try to play that one, too, for the show's over.
My Boy by L.B. Shane.
All right.
What else you got, Todd?
Also, it's the home of two national championship slow-pitched softball teams.
They were a professional softball team based out of Monticella called StarPath.
A couple of the players included, which you already mentioned,
Hall of Fame coach Rodney Woods.
He played on the team.
And another guy that you're all familiar with played on the team,
the Cincinnati Reds Golden Glove winner, Doug Flynn.
Doug Flynn.
How many dang.
All right.
Well, Todd, we appreciate it.
I'm glad we got you on some good stuff from Wayne County,
so we appreciate you calling in for us today.
So Doug Flynn, though, Wayne County doesn't claim Doug Flynn.
Fayette County claims Doug.
I don't know.
It sounds like we have another controversy.
No, he's definitely Fayette County.
Corey Price sent us a Mono, Monticello Pool Hall, not Monahaw,
news story from many, many years ago when they were 65 cents.
They had sold millions back then.
This doesn't have a date on the actual article, but it looks very old.
If you're going down to Lake Cumberland or Conley Bottom or these other marinas,
it's worth your time to go by the Monticello City Pool Hall
just to get a hamburger or a cheeseburger.
It's worth it, I promise you.
All right, Matt, who's next?
Bob and James Town.
Bob, you can vouch for Conley Bottom
in the beautiful area of Monticello, right?
Oh, yeah, there's three swinging bridges in Wayne County.
It's a great place to go four-wheeling.
You've got a lot of good trails down there in the South Fork.
Anyway, I want, you know, we live in Kentucky.
A lot of us take it for granted.
Kentucky is a wonderful state.
And they're having an event that's coming up,
start Saturday, runs all week in Campbellsville.
It's called Jets Over Kentucky.
Fellas, I'm telling you what, if you've ever seen,
remote control, these are actual flying jets.
Okay.
Some of them are 15, 20 feet long.
There's one of them in the SR-71 Blackbird replica.
It's about 18 feet long.
Cost a quarter of a million dollars.
Ah, you're speaking crazy talk.
Yeah, yeah.
Come over there at the Campbellsville Airport.
All right.
Bring us an easy up, some shade, a cooler, some voting chairs.
It runs always starting Saturday.
All right.
Thank you, Cobb.
We appreciate it.
We're right back.

On hurdle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going.
from the WMBA standout Kate Martin
and rising hockey star Layla Edwards.
If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't.
Like, I've never understood that.
Like, it didn't make sense in my brain.
It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you,
but don't ever feel like you don't feel on.
Don't let that be the reason you don't do it.
An Olympic champs, Gabby Thomas, and Katie Ladeke.

that means the world to me.
And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals.

I can do anything.

Welcome back to Kentucky Sports.
Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Here's Matt Jones.
All right, welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio.
Ryan, Drew, Shannon, and Mario.
And yesterday Tom Hart hosted another great show,
but he talked about maybe coming to Kentucky to buy a car, Drew.
Can you help him?
Yeah, we were trying to tell Tom that he needs to hit the road with Don Franklin.
He can call them today for their special travel tune-up,
including an AC system test for only 79-95.
They also have the largest inventory of new, used,
and certified pre-owned vehicles in the state with over 5,000 vehicles.
Ryan, truly, Tom can find one out of 5,000.
They have 27 dealerships across the bluegrass, and Don Franklin's family is there to serve all your needs.
Don Franklin has a huge selection of 2024 models with Chevy, Buick, GMC, Hyundai, Nissan, Chrysler Dodge, Jeep Ram, Fiat, Kia, Midsubishi, Ford, Lincoln, Genesis, Cadillac, now Toyota.
Steer your way over to Don Franklin Auto.com, Don Franklin Auto, driven by family.
On the aviation glass text machine, how could you guys not mention Mill Springs that has the largest overshot water wheel in the world in Wayne County?
is now part of the national park system.
So again, we're claiming the biggest in the world,
a water wheel.
Largest overshot water wheel in the world is in Wayne County.
What is a water wheel?
Water wheel.
Just the big, you know, the...
It turns and carries the water up.
Oh, okay.
The water comes out and spins the...
Yeah, Ryan, how did you not get that?
Yeah, you've not seen one, Mario.
We've never seen that before.
We did get it. Todd got it.
We didn't want to take all of Todd's information.
That's true.
Todd was part of this experiment.
And Corey Price has found the most popular nicknames of high schools in Kentucky.
Cardinals is not it.
Cardinals is like fifth.
What do you guys think is the number one nickname of high schools in Kentucky?
I saw Corey's list.
I have not seen it.
I'll say Bears.
No, Bears is not on the top list here.
Top 15 or so.
Got a guess?
Wildcats.
Wildcats is tied for second with 15.
So what's the answer to them?
I want you to guess.
You're up, Shannon.
It flies.
It flies around.
Eagles.
Yes.
Eagles is number one.
There are two golden eagles, but eagles have 17 schools have the name,
it named Eagles, including one North Bullitt.
They're the Eagles?
Yeah.
We used to beat down the Chargers.
We used to beat down the Eagles.
You and I are both chargers from high school.
I'm a Mike Central Charger.
Oh, I didn't realize that.
Yeah, you're a bullet east charge.
Okay.
Tied with Wildcats for number two.
Panthers.
Okay.
Pfeville Panthers.
Yeah.
Parkville Panthers.
And then 12 tigers, there's one fighting tiger,
11 bulldogs, and then finally 10 Cardinals.
How far down the list is Maroons?
I'm pretty sure Maroons is one and one only, the Madisonville Maroons.
I don't know of any other Maroons ever.
We're unique.
I feel like, you know, you got to have or you should have the animal in your state if you're going to name it after that.
That makes sense.
Right.
We don't have any lions in Kentucky that I'm a wide.
Maybe mountain lions, but not lions, just running around.
Or Panthers?
Are there not a lot of panthers in Kentucky?
I don't think so.
Pirates?
Pirates?
How many pirates you've seen in Kentucky?
But then there's schools like the yellow jackets.
Everybody's got, there's yellow jackets everywhere.
That should be more popular than it is.
All right, this is from the Aviation Glass Text Machine from my friend Bobby King.
That song about my boy is about adopting.
You're going to choke up.
Be prepared, brother.
Uh-oh.
Oh, uh-oh.
Pull on your heartstrings.
Matt, have you been able to find it, Matt?
The song, my boy.
I think he found it.
Okay, he's still looking for it.
I can't remember the author's name, but we have any callers, Matt.
Go ahead.
Who is it?
Andy knows Wayne County.
Oh, Pulaski County Maroons.
I was going to add that, but I kind of liked you saying we were the only one.
Yeah.
Somebody just texted it on the Aviation Glassman's text machine.
Yeah, Plasky, too.
All right, who do you say it was, Matt?
Andy, go ahead, Andy.
Hey, guys.
Hey, I'm going to back you up on the Monost.
sell a pool hall burger uh i've only been in there one time but i have to say and not even
joking this best burger i've ever ate in my life i'm with you i think it is the number one burger
in the state is the potanconno pool hall burger it is burglare lexington burger week too oh yes it is
what else you got and uh i want to get back what she was talking about the other day
a couple examples uh talking about what makes you feel old when you go in a restaurant
restaurant and you order a drink and they say I'll be back with your drinking. I'm like, aren't you
forgetting to do something? And they don't even ID you. Oh, yeah. I asked them one time and they're like,
we only, I need people that look 40 and younger. I'm like, yeah, I've kind of hit that point
too. Yeah. Well, you go buy a beer and they don't even card you anymore. Like for the longest time,
you know, when I was probably in my 30s, they were still carding me. I was like, ah, yeah,
still got it. Then you turn 40 and they don't even think twice.
about the guy out here is that the rule of thumb
40 you have to be look younger than
40 before you get carded I think that's
yeah for most places I think so
if you're if you look 40
or younger they're going to card you
I was in line to buy this has been about a year
I was at Rupp for a concert
I went to buy a beer from the guy at the beer stand
and I had my ID ready he's like I don't need that
I see your coconut I was like my coconut
and then he pointed at my goatee
with the white hair he's like you got coconut
in your beard you're good and I'm like
now SEC tournament
going to bars
on Broadway. They just point at my beard.
ID stays in the wallet. Should have been
dying at white when you were 19. Hey kids.
If you can't get a hold of fake ID, throw
some white hair in your beard. You're in business.
859-280-2287.
That's our Clark's Pumpand Shop. Phone number. Who we got next, Matt?
Freebird. Go ahead, Freebird. We've got an all-star callers today.
Go ahead, Freebird.
Man, I can vouch. I'm driving through
Wayne County as we speak.
And it's
either an Amish or a Mennonite-owned
little markets called grubhub.
Dude, they're deli sandwiches,
them make them three inches thick
with your lettuce, tomatoes, and everything on there.
And I believe
Kenny Davis, he played ball
at Georgetown with one of my
vice presidents. He's the only
NAA player ever
to be on the Olympic team.
And shout
to him to James Bond and
Hughinson from Lane County.
Appreciate it, Freebird. Kind of broke up
there a little bit. I'm sure who he said there.
Somebody named Hudson.
I think it's what he said, so not sure.
859-2-8-0-2-287, Mr. Grubhub.
This is on the A-Visaglass text machine.
I've seen a lot of cougars in the great state of Kentucky.
Well, Bullet Central is the cougars.
Are they?
Yeah.
I don't think that's the cougars that the texter is talking about, but get your joke.
But, yeah, there are quite a few schools in Kentucky named after the cougars.
Is Corey know how many cougars are in Kentucky?
Well, he could definitely, and this list, Todd sent us a nice text message.
Todd said, thank you so much for having me on talking about Wayne County.
Thank you so much for always talking good about Wayne County.
We appreciate people like you guys.
Wayne County is one of those counties that's stuck down there on the Tennessee border
that they're not really in the Lexington Media Market.
They're not really in the Louisville media market.
They kind of get lost down there.
And I'm going to use the opportunity to thank Todd and other callers who sometimes wait a long time on mornings
because we either get lost or forget to go to them.
And we left Todd hanging there.
So I've finally got them on and got them to participate.
The nasty SEC Conference Tournament at the end of the year.
This tournament calls Kentucky the NCAA tournament.
Well, they still got in the NCAA tournament.
They just lost it.
They just lost their first round game against Oakland.
Even though they got beat in the SEC tournament,
I think most people thought Kentucky was still going to make a big run in the NCAA tournament.
It just didn't happen.
While we're talking about NCAA tournament losses,
did you see what Armando Beicott said yesterday?
Oh, yes, that did.
Yeah.
He was talking about how they played St. Peter's and what the Elite 8, I believe,
seat 16 maybe regardless they won by a million he was just
wide openly saying I don't know how teams lost to St. Peters they're the
worst team we played all year they were so easy to beat
and just watching him say that on my phone made me furious
he even said I don't know how Kentucky lost exactly what he said I don't know
how Kentucky lost to that team you rarely hear a player talk about another team
or something like that so him to sit there he was laughing at how bad St.
Peters was he's like I don't understand how many we lose this team he said I had
20 and 20 and they ran him out of the
I'm sure there are a lot of teams thinking that about Oakland.
Well, this past season.
When Jack Golky was on this show with the...
Pardon my take.
Pardon my take, guys.
Jack from Oakland.
What did I say?
Jack Golkian.
Jack Golky.
Jack from Oakland, yeah.
He basically said, I don't know what they were doing.
You know, like, how did they not make a change to try to stop me?
He said that Calipari was the only one that didn't realize he was high.
Yeah.
God, that hurts so bad when he said that.
He also realized it.
It was.
I said this the next day on the show.
even though I wanted to punch my radio
when he was talking about
I don't understand why Kentucky kept letting me shoot threes
in some ways it was a little therapeutic
foreclosure to hear him say that
I'm the same way it felt good to know that hey
it wasn't really
Kentucky players it was like the coaching staff didn't make any
adjustments and now that coaching staff's gone
and the fans we've said it forever
or not forever but we've talked about that loss
we've had millions of conversations all summer about it
but for someone that played in the game to say
the one who hit all the shots yes
As much as it sucked to hear him say it, it helped me close the book a little bit.
I'm kind of with you on that.
It did kind of, was kind of therapeutic to hear him.
And I hope I never hear from him or see him again.
That's right.
You know what else is therapeutic?
What is that?
Moonshine.
Really?
I don't make the pain go away.
Moonshine is therapeutic.
That's right.
You can't have bourbon without moonshine.
So check out the Moonshine Trail.

I go there for breakfast, come here for lunch.
I'm set.

I know this song.
When it first came out, my mom sent it to me because she knew it would make me tear up and cry.
So this is a very popular song.
I didn't realize that's the one we were talking about by L.V. Shane Payton.
It's a little controversy, though.
A lot of people are saying he's from Caneyville in Grayson County, not Wayne County.
So is he one of these guys that was born in Grayson County, but now lives in Wayne County maybe, something like that?
I don't know.
So it depends.
Like, where do you say you're from?
Like, where you were born, where you grew up, where you live now?
Like, what defines where you're from?
Good question.
Great question.
You can answer that.
You lived in two cities since you moved to Lexington.
Where are you from?
I say both.
I say New York and then Florida.
It just depends on whatever.
But you've got to pick one.
If I had to pick one.
You're a professional.
You're a professional athlete.
We've got to put your hometown.
We can't put New York, Florida.
So which one are we putting?
I'll probably put Florida.
Okay.
I went to high school in Florida.
I went to high school in Florida.
I think that's a lot.
I think that's a lot of where did you go to school.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like, I'm always going to be from Otwell, Indiana.
You're going to be from Bullitt County, Bullitt County, Mount Washington, Kentucky.
You're Madisonville, always.
So, so now it's framed.
Like, when they say, where are you from, well, I'm not from Lexington.
I originated in Madisonville.
Yeah, correct.
If someone says, where you raised, you know, it's kind of varies.
We're at Dave's deli here at 1045 Georgetown Road.
Dave Carroll has opened up a deli counter here on Georgetown Road.
Of course, Dave Carroll's been a big friend for KSR for many, many years through Red State
barbecue. The barbecue place is just down the road here on Georgetown Road. They've got
awesome, awesome. Brisket, ribs, the corn pudding, I think, is the best in the world. I'm a side
item guy. The beat's not good, but a lot of good side items, too. So maybe you come here to
Dave's deli for lunch, and then you drive down the road for Red State Barbecue for dinner. Waffle
house for breakfast is right there. Mr. Georgetown Road over here. So we really appreciate
Dave Carroll and Red State Barbecue. Red Phoenix is the name of the company. They're being one of our
longtime sponsors, and we appreciate him.
having us out here today as he's opening Dave's deli just opened the doors like three weeks ago
you can walk in order your deli sandwich you can order it on DoorDash uh but uh this is something i
think this side of town needed and i'm looking forward to coming over here a lot i want to
officially put the Drew franklin stamp of approval on the meatball sub sandwich i finally got to
eat during the break that's a good meatball sandwich nice and that grilled cheese sandwich with bacon
is unbelievable 859-2802287 who's our caller i'm at donnie go ahead donnie
Hey, we got a couple of phenomena down here in Wayne County, you know,
where we're so far down here on the border, I'm surprised nobody's mentioned.
Did you not ever notice drying how all the trees down here in Wayne County lean toward the south?
Why do they lean toward the south?
Because Tennessee sucks.
There's our call today.
Very much our Don Franklin call of the day.
We appreciate you calling in a little Wayne County humor down there.
Who's next, Matt?
Spooky Fox is up next.
Go ahead, Spooky Fox.
Hey, how are you guys doing today?
How you doing?
Pretty good, pretty good.
I've got to say, with the controversy of where you're from and where you've moved to and what that means, who claims you.
I wasn't going to talk about something else, but I've got to talk about that.
I moved up here to Wayne County in 2003 as a kid, and I've got to say this is the best area of Kentucky.
I travel over the state playing music, and you will not follow.
I'm nicer people.
You will not find more welcoming people than in Wayne County.
And no matter how long I live, I will always say I'm from Wayne County.
I'm originally from Florida.
But I don't like to tell people that for obvious reasons, especially the basketball program.
But yeah, all if I live, I will tell people from Wayne County.
So that's my thought on it.
Appreciate it.
All right.
Thank you very much.
Appreciate the phone call.
Yeah, you know, there's Owensboro football legend has just walked in.
Charles Grundy clocked into the Daly counter.
Look at that.
Baseball?
Basketball?
I thought you were mainly a football guy.
You are now on KSR.
Multi-talented, multi-sport athlete.
From Owensboro High School, that's right.
859-2802-287.
Who we got next, Matt?
Josh, go ahead, Josh.
All right, so there's a museum in Wayne County to honor their local culture.
Part of the reason that museum started, there was a guy from Wayne County named Wyatt
Atkinson, and he was a gun builder.
The cool part about that is he lived two miles off of a gravel road.
have to walk through the woods to get to his house.
And he built all these guns with no machinery, no electricity, nothing, just all hand tools.
And eventually he was found by Sergeant York of military fame.
And he challenged Sergeant York to a shooting contest and ended up beating him by blowing out the bullseye.
He is also featured in the Milwaukee Public Museum.
Shout out to Wyatt Atkinson.
He was my grandfather's grandfather.
There we go.
Oh, appreciate it very much.
I love these obscure facts when we do these counties.
That's why I enjoy this little project we're doing.
Yeah, and that's why we always ask for callers who live there
because, sure, we can get on the Internet and tell you the population and the restaurant
and who won the state championship, but we don't get all this stuff.
I mean, you've got to live there and know it to give us this info.
That's why it's kind of cool when Mario's going with us on these shows.
I can kind of, he rides with me, tell him that, hey, man, we're going down to Somerset.
Here's what we know about Somerset.
Things, whatever, something like that you saw.
That's kind of fun for you, isn't it?
Definitely, definitely.
Just hearing everybody talk about Wayne County makes me want to visit Wayne County right now.
There will be a Conley-Bottom remote at some point in our future, I hope.
We'll get you out there.
Let's get one more call, Matt.
Who we got?
Kroger.
Grover.
Grover.
Go ahead, Grover.
Hey, guys.
I want to speak up from my UK freshman teammate, Doug Flynn, who is in the Bryan Station Hall of Fame.
Doug and I were in freshman psychology, UK, and 69.
And we were not passing course.
so we were going to flunk and we were going to not be eligible.
And this girl sitting in between us, she looked at, are you all on the basketball team?
We said, yeah.
She said, well, I'm Mary Louise Rouse, and my daddy, Leighton Rouse, Mickey Rouse, is in his jersey's retired.
You all can cheat off of me because I don't want you to flunk out.
We actually, and you can ask Doug, we got to be in that class and kept her eligibility, but not without that lady.
Appreciate it, Grover.
Thank you very much.
Always looking out for each other.
It's a big blue nation.
They always want to help each other out.
Where's our final sponsor, Shannon?
Shady Ray, Ryan, I want you to stop over paying for sunglasses.
If you're tired of buying expensive sunglasses only to lose or break them,
or you don't ever wear them because you don't want them to get dirty.
You need to check out Shady Ray's.
They're an independent American-owned company that started right here in Kentucky.
They have premium polarized shades for every activity.
And if you use the promo code KSR, you're going to get 50% off two or more pairs in store
at their flagship location at the summit at Fritz Farm or online at Shady
raised.com, every pair, backed by their lost and broken protection plan.
I've got a latent ral's fact.
Okay.
First player to have his jersey retired at Kentucky.
First player?
According to the internet.
First one to go up to the rafters.
The internets are never wrong.
Kentucky.com.
Good luck going out your first pitch tonight.
Hey, I got it, man.
Right down the middle.
I'm going to bring the cheese.
You think he can do that, Mario?
Boo-boo.
No, his little booboo, his little blister on his little fingers.
I'll be all right.
What do you think I could hit on the radar gun?
50?
I think you hit the radar gun.
The radar gun is actually in center field, so that would be bad.
You know, Drew and Matt and I all threw out the first pitch here at the legends at the same time.
Yeah.
We had three pitches at the same time.
We all did pretty good, too.
All did pretty good.
Nobody bounced in it.
A little bit of pressure off of you when you have somebody throwing with you.
Yeah, it's true.
It really was.
Because then, you know, I guess you don't really focus on the bad pitch.
He's like, oh, well, he threw a good first pitch at least.
But if there's only one, that's a little eight-year-old that goes on here and throws a bullet right down to middle, right before Shannon.
See if he can come out and match that.
Just can't bounce it.
So a big thanks again to Dave's Deli for having us out here we're here.
We appreciate it, Dave.
Thank you very much.
Best of luck with the deli.
Come on out and see them, 1045 Georgetown Road.
They've got a deli counter.
They also have catering.
And then right down the road, of course, is Red State Barbecue.
Guys, we're back in the studio tomorrow at KS Bar and Grill.
And next week we'll hit Webster County and Whitley County.
You're on deck.
Go cuts.
All right.
Drew, Shannon, Mario.
This is Ryan.
We'll be right back tomorrow on Kentucky Sports Radio.
Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy.
