Starting point is 00:03:49 most definitely how about that talk to you before we went on the air and i ask you man how's it doing how many kids you got you're you're you're a busy man i am a busy man I got a lot. How many? Got a whole basketball squad. That a whole squad. No, I got five. I got five.
Starting point is 00:04:04 And are there any of them players? Yeah, my son, he played. Yeah. Yeah, he loved the game. Hopefully we can get them, you know, in their white and blue one day. Very good. I enjoyed you. That was our long break.
Starting point is 00:04:14 I feel like I did an entire conversation with Eric just catching up. Yeah. He's still, I know everyone remembers. John Wall, Eric Blasso, DeMarcus, were inseparable. The three amigos, as you say, still boys to this day? Still friends to this day, man. actually talk you know not often but you know we check on each other once in a while but them my brothers for life i heard um marcus on john wall's podcasts also a draft king's joint and they
Starting point is 00:04:38 were talking about watching finding nemo with their kids and i'm just like what happened to life these two were dunking on everybody in ruperina and now they're watching finding nemo and we got here we look i was pretty much the same i don't watch a cocoa miller now if if eric bletzel's the grandpa brendon can that you must be the baby i mean you were just playing here yeah just I just finished up this past year. So fresh out of college and with all these guys that I grew up watching and some guys that I played with, so I'm excited for this. You got the fresh legs.
Starting point is 00:05:07 These other guys maybe walk around, a little soft-footed. You got fresh legs going. After five years at Kentucky, you know, the legs, I still feel a little bit. It's not as much as those guys. But, yeah. You grew up nearby, Kentucky fan. You were watching these guys, just like everyone listening. When you're on the court now, practicing a lot of familiar,
Starting point is 00:05:24 do you have to take a second? He's like, oh, wait, I'm guarding Andrew Harrison. Is any of that? Is any of that hit you? Yeah, I mean, for sure. Because, I mean, like you said, growing up in Kentucky, just being a fan. And, like, I remember watching those guys when Cal's first class with those guys. So, I mean, that and then just, like, all the guys that are here that you grew up watching and being a fan.
Starting point is 00:05:42 So all that and just being on team with him now, it's kind of surreal. Eric, you were here. I mean, that was such a special, special time when Cal came, you, Wall, cousins, Daniel Horton's down there. I mean, that was just such a special. How do you explain that when somebody asked you what that was like? I mean, we didn't know what to expect, you know, when we got on campus. We was babies, kids. We didn't know the extent that, you know, how big Kentucky basketball was at the time.
Starting point is 00:06:08 And, you know, big blue madness when we first, you know, started it. It kind of set the tone for the year for us. Speaking of setting the tone, the Louisville game, I'm going to go straight to that. That's a fond memory of your all's era as not a big Louisville fan here. Intensity a little bit with that group. Even Young Cowell was intense in that one. I think he yelled, you've got the wrong guy when someone tried to mess. You remember that game well?
Starting point is 00:06:33 I do. I mean, I probably got kicked out with three seconds into the game. But it was all about the history and the rivalry and the competitiveness of, you know, us versus them, man. But it wasn't nothing, man. I'm pretty cool with some of the guys over there at Louisville. It wasn't a number of respect. But it's just you kind of just embrace the Kentucky culture. And it's like, well, I'm supposed to not like this team in front of me.
Starting point is 00:07:00 So here we are going on. I mean, we had, you know, we was at Rook. That's all I can say. You had the game and you got to play in Assembly Hall in Bloomington. Another big atmosphere you had a big game that night. Yeah, I did. They just caught me on the wrong day. I mean, I just had it going.
Starting point is 00:07:16 And, you know, my teammates kept finding me. And, you know, it was fun. It was fun. Brin, you went from Coach Ulyss as a Kentucky player to coach, Julius as a La Familia player. What's he been like as a head coach so far in these practices? I know you've only had a few, but is he being a good leader so far? Yeah, I mean, for sure.
Starting point is 00:07:33 You know Tyler. He's great. His time here, he's super smart, high IQ. Notice I went stuff done. I kind of learned from him the past couple years when he was on staff here. And he's bringing that over to the team law familiar. He's been great to fast goal at his and practice, kind of getting us ready, helping us get through some sets and stuff and just kind of get our legs underneath of us.
Starting point is 00:07:51 So he's done a great job. Yeah, Drew, asking about. his offense he's going to play and he says he's going to do a lot what cow did you know kind of just let you guys go create make your own play right yeah and I know he he kind of had me out there kind of I knew some stuff like terminology that he wanted that we had been in fast and some of these guys hadn't done it for a couple years whatever so I was kind out there helping him learn that and getting the feel for the stuff he wanted to run sounds like we had some some leadership over here on the court yeah absolutely assistant coach
Starting point is 00:08:18 britton Canada brennan we have to ask you about reed shepard's the hottest name in sports right now and you played with them I know we're here to talk about law familiar But you got to give us your thoughts on Reed and what he's doing in Vegas this week. Yeah, I mean, I didn't expect any less. I mean, just from the moment I met Reed and saw Reed, I was impressed each and every day. I mean, just from the beginning, you could tell. I mean, he worked super hard and super talented. Great kid, obviously.
Starting point is 00:08:41 But he improved every single day from the moment we got there last June until March. But the stuff he's putting on out there in Summer League is really impressive. Each game gets better and better. So I'm happy for him. You guys got to practice against the team, Eric, yesterday. What was your takeaway from your practicing against Mark Pope's new squad? I mean, I think they can shoot the ball really well. They can defend.
Starting point is 00:09:06 I think we're going to see, you know, some really bright spots from them. Obviously, they're going to get better each and every game. And there's a process, so I'm very excited about, you know, what I've seen. Yeah. Did you know Coach Pope before? I did not. I did not. I actually met him yesterday.
Starting point is 00:09:21 And like I said, I'm very impressed, you know, how he carries. itself, high energy, passionate, you know, everything you need in the head coach. Did I see he just popped in the autograph line like a fan and got autographs with you all? He did, he did. I don't know about he got an autograph from us, but he definitely popped in. Sounds about right with Pope. Brennan, can you reveal anything you've seen of the new team? Have you gotten to see much of the current guys at all? No, not just to practice with him yesterday. Like, like Bled said, I mean, they shoot a lot of three is talented players. They got up and out of the floor. Great on both ends.
Starting point is 00:09:53 So, I mean, I'm excited to see what Pope has in store. He seems like a really good path. Eric, have you been one of the guys that, like, you like to watch the Kentucky team since you left here? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I mean, you know, and in there, we'd be having a little wages in the NBA and the pros. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:10:10 Which team, which, you know. But I got, you know, I won a couple games. So I like what I saw all the years. So you had a good long career in the NBA. How often you look up and there's a Kentucky jersey? It seems watching at home, there's a Kentucky fan. We're wearing our gear everywhere. Like I said, me coming here, I didn't know what to expect.
Starting point is 00:10:32 And, you know, ever since I left, I see Kentucky, white, blue, everywhere. So it's amazing to see. A crazy bunch. How often do you get back here to Lexington then? This is my first time in a while. I think I came back last time Julius was on the team. You know, I skirmished against that team, Tyler now. Yeah, it's been a while.
Starting point is 00:10:54 Was there a place you had to go to right away, like food or something? Yeah, I kind of got me some fried chicken. I don't think my stomach liked it pretty well, though. It was pretty good. It tastes like old times. It's good. Brendan, you have to solve the argument before you leave. Are you from Mount Sterling or are you from Winchester?
Starting point is 00:11:12 You have to settle it right now. Oh, first you on the spot. Somebody's going to be upset. The people in Mount Sterling or the people in Winchester, where is Brendan Cannon? What are you from? I'm from Mount Sterling, but I graduated from DRC. So where else? Which one you're picking?
Starting point is 00:11:29 I'll pick Mount Sterling. Mount Sterling, there it is. Well, it says it's going to be man now. Are you doing a lot of coaching like you mentioned you have to do something in? But is that you kind of help these guys doing a little coaching? Is that something you want to do in your future? I mean, possibly. I'm still kind of like undecided.
Starting point is 00:11:49 I mean, I obviously love the game. I love being around it. and definitely missed it since graduating. But I haven't really fully decided if that's something like I want to pursue, you know what I'm saying? But maybe down the road. So what are you doing right now? I'm working with Stryker, so doing orthopedic cells, so knee and hip replacements.
Starting point is 00:12:05 I'll ask both you over all the years. I mean, you both play with great Kentucky players, and there's some on your law-familiar team now. But there was a guy, is there a guy when you were watching as a fan that you thought, I wish I could have played with him? Any U.K. guy over the years that you think you would have paired well with and really would have liked having a season with? I mean, it's pretty much a lot. I wish I was on a couple of teams that, you know, came through here.
Starting point is 00:12:27 I'm playing with, you know, some players, a lot of players, actually, that, you know, I wish I would play with back then. So I'm kind of getting, you know, what I asked for a little bit. You got to throw a lob to Willie. I mean, that would have been fun to watch. You and Willie on a fast break, I think. You know, Brady, a couple threes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:43 You know, Kelly, a couple of threes. Tiling, coached by Tile. I can't believe I'm old than Tiling. He coached me. But like he said, Tyler got a great basketball of mine. It's special to see him, you know,
Starting point is 00:12:56 doing what he loved to do. Well, it's great to have you back in Lexington, man. Eric Bledsoe, Brendan Kannon, give a big round of applause. We appreciate it. The Laugh-Familia team playing Friday night down at Rupp Arena. We'll take a break.
Starting point is 00:13:07 We'll get a back. We've got two more guys coming in on the hot seat. We'll be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying,

Starting point is 00:14:06 and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Trip Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase
Starting point is 00:14:24 that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth?
Starting point is 00:14:41 Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keer Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure,
Starting point is 00:14:55 and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the hard way and listen now. Life throws hurdles big and small. The question is, how do you conquer them? On hurdle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women
Starting point is 00:15:12 in sports and wellness. Professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going from the WNBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't
Starting point is 00:15:34 belong. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladeke. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me, and that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything.
Starting point is 00:15:58 Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. All right, welcome back. Kentucky Sports Radio here live at KS Bar and Grill for the Law Famillion Meeting Green. Ryan and Drew here in our normal spots, but we have a great crowd of people out here coming out and meeting these guys.
Starting point is 00:16:24 A lot of them coming back to Lexington for the first time in a long time. These two guys, Drew, weren't here that long ago. Nate Sistina and Kellan Gray. Let's give it up for these two guys. Kellyan Lee out. It seems like you were just here playing. And now you're one of the old guys now playing overseas. I know, but it's crazy.
Starting point is 00:16:41 I'm the youngest guy on this team, though. You're the baby? Yeah. So the nickname Grandad, I don't think, applies anymore. I forgot about the Granddad nickname. When you were on the UK team, you were Granddad. Now you're the grandbaby, I guess, for everybody. So where are you playing at now?
Starting point is 00:16:57 I'll be in Germany this coming season. I was in France last year, and this year I'll be in Germany. Enjoying being overseas. Sounds like a couple good places to live. Yeah, I did. Jay Paul Fonseigne and Petit Poo. I learned a little French and was able to, you know, immerse myself in the culture.
Starting point is 00:17:14 a little bit. And I kind of adjust to the overseas game. So very excited about going to Germany and seeing what kind of season we can have. What about you? What are you up to these days, Nate Sestina? Doing the same thing. Playing basketball overseas. This past year I was in Fennerbachia in Turkey.
Starting point is 00:17:34 And right before the season finished up and I came home, I signed a two-year contract to go to Valencia in Spain. Well, what exactly got into you this past weekend in this little charity scrimmage you all did? Brennan Canada, wherever Brendan's at. Brendan got to me a little bit. No, we were just to kind of BSM before the game and trying to figure out if everybody was going to be super competitive or just have fun.
Starting point is 00:17:56 And Kellan started making a bunch of shots, and I had missed my first two, so I was like, all right, I got to turn this out. You outdid me, though. You got the MVP. He got 38 points in the scrimings the other night. I think I only had 35. How did you guys do against the Kentucky team
Starting point is 00:18:10 during the practice yesterday? I think we did pretty well. defensively we were superb I thought and it's a credit to just us taking this serious and the Kentucky guys they got some good players but I think we I think we did pretty well yeah I mean it's a team full of professionals versus team full of college athletes and it's bunch of guys that haven't been together on both sides but it's different when you know you have a bunch of guys from all over the place in college that are coming together and it's going to take time to figure it out and take time to, you know, iron things out.
Starting point is 00:18:46 But I think they're going to be good, too. Their energy is off the charts. It's just fine-tuning things, I think. Did you all thank you to be back in the Joe Craft Center and Reparina so soon? And what was it like when that phone call came to be a part of the basketball tournament coming up? For me, when 20 reached out to me, we were in Monaco for EuroLeague playoffs. And I was like, man, you know, I got a game today. Let me – and I thought he was like, it's going to me a 10-minute conversation.
Starting point is 00:19:09 And it would be like 45 minutes. And we just told stories about being here and what it means to be here and, you know, what it takes to play here. And then you explain the whole TBT situation to me and what they wanted to do in the community. And that was a big reason why I wanted to come back. And then the biggest thing for me was being able to play in rep again and redeem myself for losing against Tennessee on senior day. You didn't have to bring that off. No, but I had to because I want everybody to be there to. There you go.
Starting point is 00:19:34 For the redemption to arise. Yeah, it's a big one. What about you, Kellen? Very similar experience for me. When Twani called me, I was honored to be asked to be a part of this group. And I just had to really check with my agent and make sure there were no restrictions on what we could do in the summer and things like that for prospective teams going forward. Once I got the green light, I called back immediately. And, you know, I've been very excited.
Starting point is 00:20:03 And then I shot Nate a text with the eye emoji to try to help facilitate his recruitment. And I'm glad it all worked. out so it's good to be back how much did how your year ended not the tennessee game but you were part of the 2020 team where i mean everyone was so excited for that scc tournament an ncd tournament you had great teams great teammates my boy nick richards manual quickly tyree smacksie and then unfortunately the world shut down there for a little bit did the ending of that kind of add to wanting to get back here and play a little more basketball in lexington absolutely i think i mean i've been all over the world now playing for five years and like kentucky fans are still
Starting point is 00:20:40 some of the best fans and the opportunity to play in front of them again, you know, and in Rupp Arena, not even just in the state of Kentucky, but in RUP, I think was, like I said, the biggest thing. And, you know, we didn't get the opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament. That was, like, the number one reason I came here. So I think that when I had opportunity presented itself, it was just, it was a no-brainer, really. I always say you all were going to win the championship, and I count it in my brain. Do you do that too?
Starting point is 00:21:08 Number nine. I mean, I don't think the fans, they don't have that. It's an unofficial record, but there's no banner. But no, for sure. If there's one guy at Kentucky, Kellyn, that I would want to give a do-over to, you'd be on the list because you were really just starting to get hot and fire, and then you had the injury, your planter fasciitis. It's like it, like we didn't get, I don't think Kentucky fans,
Starting point is 00:21:32 we think we were cheated. We didn't get to see the true Kell and Grady that year you were here. You know, it's unfortunate because I thought, For a while, we were really rolling, and we were having some really decisive wins against really, really quality competition. And, you know, it wasn't just me. A lot of us got banged up towards the end of the year and kind of affected the momentum and the stride we were hitting.
Starting point is 00:21:59 And obviously, we wish we could take back that final game and give the fan base and give ourselves, frankly, a better ending to that season. but I think there's a lot of special moments throughout that year. I mean, 16 and 0 at home, 14-4 in the SEC, going to Fog Allen and winning by 20, beating Carolina by 30. Overcoming a lot of adversity when we lost Titan Severe and went 2-0 during that stretch. So a lot to be proud of and just an unfortunate ending, but I wish we could have that game back for sure.
Starting point is 00:22:32 You deserve a do-over. You and that team deserve a do-over, I think, Drew. Fans like to talk about loudest moments in reality. Rup Arena and I feel like you against Alabama needs to be up there in that conversation in particular like one of your threes in the comeback effort because Alabama if I'm not mistaken was up a little big early in the game but how does that memory stick out of your UK career because I know that was one of your all-time performance is one of the highlights of that season for the team at least on the schedule help me yeah that I think that game was probably my favorite
Starting point is 00:22:59 individual game and then that I think we were on like a we were down 14 and we were on like a 14-0 run and Jacob skipped. it to me in the corner and I remember getting a video of that about a half a year ago and just getting goosebumps watching it because that was Rupp was, Rupp really turned out an amazing fashion
Starting point is 00:23:20 in that game and and you know, crowd enthusiasm crowd excitement, it really does help propel a run and so that was a special moment and then obviously when Davion threw it off my hip when I wasn't looking I thought that was a pretty cool moment too.
Starting point is 00:23:37 I forgot about that until you just mentioned it, yeah. So you also, you met your future wife here at Kentucky. I sure did. I sure did. It's crazy because five years ago, like on this date, I didn't even know she existed. So it's like I was here in the summer and she was doing Team USA stuff.
Starting point is 00:23:52 And we had like our welcome to campus or welcome to University of Kentucky like athletes meeting. And she like popped up on the screen. I was like, you know, beautiful. Who is that? Yeah. And then come to find out she was just like one of the most down-to-earth, like, sweetest people I've ever. met and here we are five years later and getting married next summer they go have some
Starting point is 00:24:12 pretty good genes oh yeah pretty good genes huh better be a scholarship offer right next to the marriage license i already asked coach popes i you know talking to him but is talking to him talking about madison lilia maybe probably the best volleyball player to ever come through kusk to play here maybe i know we're here to talk about you but since she is the she's the famous wildcat in the house what she is she's still into in volleyball coaching yeah she's uh she played professionally for two years and then uh she's she's She's coaching here at UK, and they won their seventh, I think seventh straight SEC championship this year and went to the either Sweet 16 or the elite. I've got to do a better job of paying attention to that.
Starting point is 00:24:48 I just think all the NCAA tournaments for them kind of blend together. But they, Craig does a great job over there, and he does such a fantastic job with his former athletes, and that's why most of them come back through the program in some way. And he has two people on staff that played for him with Madison and then Meredith Jewel. and you know they're just uh it's a really a big family in the university does the same thing ben's basketball's for sure i think top notch have you gotten a peek at the memorial coliseum i have looks nice they keep it locked from us but we're excited to see it soon yeah no you got you got to
Starting point is 00:25:19 know a couple people in there all right do you kind of get that feeling from coach pope that he's wanting to keep you guys as part of the family being the fact that he's a former player oh absolutely he's his energy is uh i think i asked um one of the guys next to me yesterday i wonder if he always has as as much energy because he just brings a, his energy is just so contagious. Yeah. And he's been very keen on making sure we all know, excuse me, that if we need anything, you know, he gave us all his phone number and really ensured that we, we knew not to hesitate to reach out if we needed anything.
Starting point is 00:25:52 So, yeah, he's just, he's been incredible. This is a special place to him. So I think he's just passing along. This is true authentic self. And it's very well received by all of us. You mentioned not knowing how competitive those first practices would be, and then you two combined for 70 points. Have you seen the intensity pick up as the week's gone on?
Starting point is 00:26:13 Think we're going to be looking at a very competitive Friday night? Yeah, absolutely. I think it starts with the staff, though. You know, Tyler's a competitor through and through, and, you know, Johnny Hood. Being the guy that cuts up film, he's talking coach. He's been watching film showing us little clips here. Love it. Really?
Starting point is 00:26:32 I saw I had an iPad over there. I thought it was a menu, but it was a game. Film? Yeah, it's definitely not a menu. No, it's a practice film, game film, things that have worked in the past that, you know, we can, so Nate, excuse me. No, you're good. It's just, from top to bottom, you have a bunch of guys that want to compete in guys that want to win, and the guys are, you know, they're just competitors. And practices have been great, energy's been great. It's physical, you know, and it's high-level pros, too. It's not like you just have a bunch of guys off the street. It's like guys that are still playing at a very,
Starting point is 00:27:01 very high level. And, you know, it starts with Eric. He's over in China. of crushing it and I don't know if anybody pays attention to it but he's he's doing a lot of damage over there so and it just trickles down and like you're going into year three or year two year three year three like and kellen is is steadily progressing in europe and like if you don't know it like he's making big jumps and that's that's a big thing for him too to to make these steps and the next step for him is he's getting into these these big-time teams especially in Germany yeah well guys look we can't thank you enough for coming some in some time with good to see you guys again absolutely just a couple years ago you guys
Starting point is 00:27:35 over here playing. Now you're one of the old guys playing on this La Familia team. So we appreciate it. Best of luck to you this weekend. Thank you for joining us, Kellan. Kelly. Kelly. Thank you. Thanks for having to be here. Thanks for Thanks, guys. We appreciate it. A big round of applause. Appreciate it. So we got we got a couple more guys. Oh, we haven't talked to the break yet, Drew. I took my
Starting point is 00:27:52 headphones off. I was getting up with him. I was just, I was one of guys. Shannon, he didn't even hear the music and he's like I'm out. I'm out. I'm out. I'm having too much fun. Shannon is doing a great job today, by the way. Yes. This is like being in a time machine. I don't want this show to end. We'll be right back. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses.
Starting point is 00:29:30 Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on Earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. From the WNBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star, Layla Edwards.
Starting point is 00:30:20 If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but. Don't ever feel like you don't feel on. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladeki. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals.
Starting point is 00:30:44 At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:31:13 Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. You know, Club Blue is excited to announce a partnership with the basketball tournament to TBT, offering Club Blue members an exclusive discount. ClubBoo members have access to a 15% discount to watch LaFamilia play in the TV tournament at Rupp Arena starting on Friday. Team features a lot of UK players we've already heard from. We're going to hear from a couple more coming up here after this read. Team will be coached by Tyler Ullis. All Club Blue members can log into their account at ClubBlue NIL.com. Click on the Club Blue merchandise tab to access their special code for the tickets.
Starting point is 00:31:48 All right, we're pleased to join by two more members of the La Familiar team. We've got Karam Cantor, the younger brother of Enos Cantor, to join us on the team. And also, we talk about guys who left Lexington and are coming back. This guy lives here, stayed here, lives here. I see him all the time. Daniel, let's give it up a big round of applause for him. Yeah, Daniel, when you walked up, immediately, I'm not talking to you about TBT. I'm talking to you about your coaching and your youth involvement and stuff.
Starting point is 00:32:19 So you've got your fingers and a lot of things right now involving youth basketball in Lexington. I think it's awesome. No, it's been incredible. To be back and giving back to a community that's done so much for me, it's been phenomenal. What are your plans for your team and your program? Just, you know, teaching the game of basketball, those who want to get any type of experience of, you know, just working with pros. We try to have pros around, have Randolph Morris come in. You know, I'm talking to these guys if you ever want to come in and just help teach the game.
Starting point is 00:32:46 Yeah. That's what I want. Everything that I didn't have at a young age trying to give it back to them. And a lot of them are you got young guys? You're talking about you got a third grade team? We go all the way up from third grade to 10th grade right now. We got a bunch of teams going on, kids that are getting better daily. It's been awesome to see their progress throughout the summertime
Starting point is 00:33:02 and leading in the school ball. It's been phenomenal. And then to my left. Finally, we get to see a canter in Rupp Arena. Yeah. You cannot take this one from us. So, Kerem, nice to hear from you. Tell us a little about your background as the only not alumni guy on this team.
Starting point is 00:33:18 You played a Green Bay, Xavier, right? Yeah, I'm excited to be here. You know, I think we've got a good talent. around us. This week has been amazing. It is actually my first time in Lexington. So I'm excited to play at Roperina. I know my brother didn't get to play here and if left the bittersweet taste in everybody's mouth. So I'm excited to wear that jersey in honor of him and he'll actually try to come here on Sunday. We got we have in the first games for him to come but it's going to be fun. That's right. He told me there's
Starting point is 00:33:48 there's pressure on game one because Ennis is hoping to be on a flight to get here for game two if they can win it. So we got to we got to win all. of them anyway, but certainly for that one to get him here. But what's it been like, I'm sure you've heard about Big Blue Nation, especially from your brother. I mean, we were ready to go to war for him to get him on the team. His time here. You played not far away in Cincinnati,
Starting point is 00:34:05 but now you're in Lexington. Is it kind of as crazy as you expected? Yeah, obviously, grew up a Kentucky fan. My brother went here. He was ineligible to play here, and then they had the free-in-as campaign. I still have one of those shirts at home with me. But, I mean, I'm excited experience.
Starting point is 00:34:25 I'm excited to play at Rupp Arena. Hopefully, we see a lot of fans show up. So it's going to be a fun weekend. Daniel, I ask Eric this question. I want to ask you, you were here during such a special time for Big Blue Nation. You know, Cal had come in, all this excitement of the team, you, DeMarcus cousins, Eric Bledsoe, John Wall, Patrick Patterson. I mean, that was such a unique special time. And how do you, when somebody asked you about that, how do you explain really what it was like during that era of Kentucky basketball for you?
Starting point is 00:34:57 One of the best times in my life to be able to play with that many talented players to have that chemistry that we had and develop so fast. And to have one of the greatest coaches of all time, it was just something that you couldn't dream about. You know, growing up, I watched my brother played at Oklahoma State. So I knew a lot about Division I basketball, you know, college atmospheres. But when I got here, it was just different. it was completely different. You know, getting off, I remember my official visit, I landed at, I think, 1206, got to the hotel at 1215 and hearing roar people, start chanting my name as soon as I walked through the door.
Starting point is 00:35:30 Yeah, these people are absolutely insane. So to have that team that we had, and it being the start of the Cal era, I think the only way we could have finished it was to do it the right with the championship. Is it still bitter tasting your mouth, how it ended? Most definitely. Always will be. Always will be. Because everybody talks about that.
Starting point is 00:35:48 That team didn't make the final four. That may have been Cal's most talented team. Do you agree? Right. I mean, I'm biased, obviously. But, yeah, I'm definitely say yes. But forever we'll hate West Virginia, most definitely. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:00 Love to hear that. That makes me feel a little better about the game. When you got here, you know, the program had been down a little bit. That's why there was a coaching change. But then Cal quickly has to build a roster. The team's basically all freshmen. You have a few guys come back, some leadership. But, you know, the expectations weren't necessarily how it completely ended
Starting point is 00:36:15 because there's a lot of critics saying you can't do it with freshmen. Did you all believe, of course, you did come up a little short, but it was still an amazing year overall. Did you all think when you all got to campus that it could go the way it was going to go? I mean, the first time I talked to Kentucky fans, and they said, you know, we expect, you know, 40 and O season of championship. I said, yeah, that's right along the lines I'm thinking too. And I think all the guys that we had, they were competitive, and they knew what the challenge was, no, we want to go undefeated. SEC championship, that's cute, but we want to win a national championship. So you know from day one and everybody has the same expectation,
Starting point is 00:36:49 hey, these fans have a high expectation of perfection. And so you walk in here knowing what the job is and you just got to get it done. We've got to bottle up some of that juicy as with the Kentucky expectations. Did you see the look at his eye? Yeah, he's serious. He immediately got intense and got serious. Yeah, I'm here to win 40 games, partner. No, I mean, that was the intense.
Starting point is 00:37:09 Like, first day of practice, I can't remember who it was, but they just set the tone of Patrick Patterson. He knew. He set the tone from day one, and we all knew from there on, okay, this thing is on, and it's real. And seeing the teams that we had, first team and second team, just going and edit and then practice constantly, everybody knows some of those practices were better than all the games that we played. You all were all good in your own, right? That's why it was the record for most draft picks.
Starting point is 00:37:34 But since that year, there's been a lot of talk how John Wall kind of helped bring it out of a lot of people being the number one grader player in that class, and, of course, the number one pick. How big was it? Because he came in with a little bit more superstardom than any other recruit, really in several years of that time. Was there something about John that really helped bring it out of you and other guys too? The competitive edge that he had. I mean, honestly, he bled over there had the most competitive edge. And he saw it, you know, he was matching up, you know, iron sharpens iron.
Starting point is 00:38:02 So him and John going at it every single day was something special to be a witness of, you know, having that, the front row seat of them going at it. And then, you know, nobody wants to back down from anybody. So me and DeMarcus is going at it. me and Pat going at it. And then you got guys that were seniors that are battling for minutes and Ramon Harris and Perry Stevenson. So you're going to get everybody's best effort every single day. And it prepares you for the season to come where you're going to get every SEC team's
Starting point is 00:38:27 best effort every single game. See what you're walking into now? I'm going to expect you guys to win this weekend. Yeah, I'm fired up. Just listening to Daniel talking about his time in Kentucky. It is an intensity that you said you kind of got a little taste of when Enis had to sit out that year, but did you really understand it? No, I'm, I think I'm going to experience it this weekend.
Starting point is 00:38:49 Hopefully our fans show up and it'll be fun to finally play at the rope. You had a really big year when you're in Xavier. You were saying 2018. It was for Chris Mack. You know, he went to Louisville. So Chris Mack, it's a little touchy subject around Lexington. But that was a special year you all had when you were in Cincinnati. Yeah, we were at one team.
Starting point is 00:39:06 We won the Big East tournament. So that was a special year my last year. So I'm glad I finished my college career on a high. I know. Before we let you guys go, you got to practice against Mark Pope's team yesterday. How did it go? What do you think? Not very impressive what they did.
Starting point is 00:39:21 You know, they look good. Big guys? Since you're the big guys, you have to battle some of the big guys down there? Yeah, I mean, they're solid big battle. I mean, they know what they're doing. You know, they're being taught well and, you know, executing really well. It just kind of like it reminds me of our first year. It takes time to develop that chemistry.
Starting point is 00:39:37 You know, you've got a hodgepodge of guys you're bringing together, and it takes time to develop that chemistry, but it takes extra efforts outside of practice, working together, working out together, and you'll move fast depending on how long, how much you stay together. Pope keeps saying these guys understand the assignment. Pope understands the assignment.
Starting point is 00:39:55 After talking to Daniel, I don't think anyone understands the assignment more than him. He's got the right attitude. There's no doubt about it. He knows what the assignment is. What was your takeaway from the practice yesterday? I think Coach Fult brings the intensity for sure. I think guys understand. I think some of them are transfers,
Starting point is 00:40:09 so we've got some older guys on the team as well. So I think they're going to be very good. And your current law familiar team, I mean, that's what we're here, and what we're talking about. You're playing Friday night at 8 o'clock. You all have already had a few practices. Did the charity thing last weekend where Nate Sassina tried to score every point. You feel pretty confident in the group and enjoy playing with these guys?
Starting point is 00:40:28 Yeah, of course, and especially with the ill-amending and with the guys that we have. We're going to have a lot of guys that will be able to take that big shot to finish the game. I mean, excited to play with such an amazing talent. Well, we appreciate you guys coming in and joining us. It's been a lot of fun visiting with all you guys, and best of luck to you. You're one of the old guys. You're going to be able to bang in there a little bit. I'm going to get my best effort.
Starting point is 00:40:48 You still look like you can still play. Yeah, a little bit, a little bit. You know, my time is focused more so on the next generation, but I try to work on me occasionally. Well, thank you what you're doing for youth basketball in this town. I mean, I really mean that. That's why I was excited to talk to you about it because you need guys like you with some energy to get some programs for the youth development,
Starting point is 00:41:05 the youth programs in the town, AAU program, summer basketball. So thank you for doing all that. No, don't mention it. I don't need to thank you. All right. Daniel Orton, Karam Cantor. A lot of familiar. They play Friday night, 8 o'clock, their first game. It's single elimination.
Starting point is 00:41:18 That's right. And we've got to have a cancer here on Sundays. That's right. They're certainly winning that one. So you can still get tickets at Ticketmaster. We've got a couple tickets we're going to give away here. For all the folks that came in today, we've got a couple tickets we're going to give away. So we're trying to get a big crowd in there.
Starting point is 00:41:31 Somebody told me that, like, the next event is going to depend on ticket sales. Louisville is their counting every ticket. They've having parades because they've sold tickets. We got to beat the cards. If you're thinking about going, you're done thinking about it. Go to the website, Bob, now. We'll see you Friday night at 8. All right, guys.
Starting point is 00:41:48 We'll take our final break. Come back, our final segment. Wrap it up here on Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game. All right, welcome back. Kentucky Sports Radio live at KS. Bar and Grill, our final segment here on the La, familiar, meet, and greet day. We've had a great turnout, great crowd. Folks coming in now for lunch, the guys have all been here.
Starting point is 00:45:05 We've had two players every segment. We're going to continue on right now. We've welcome to the KSR hot seat, Mr. John Hood, Mr. Sam Malone. Thanks for having them. Thank you. John, they were saying you were down there showing them game tape while they're here for the meet and greet. Look, my real job is an assistant coach.
Starting point is 00:45:25 This is no difference. This is no hobby. This is no hobby. Basketball is not a hobby. So same thing as what Kevin Kisner says in golf. It's not a hobby. You're either all in or you're all out. I'm all in.
Starting point is 00:45:38 Tell us who you're coaching with in your full-time gig, not your life-familiar gig. I'm with Missouri Western State. We came and played in Rupp two years ago. We were responsible for the most boring scrimmage game or most boring exhibition game that Kentucky had the entire year, held them to 53 points, the lowest in a scrimmage game in 50 years. Really proud about that. Thank you all.
Starting point is 00:46:02 Yeah, there we go. It's weird to clap for Kentucky not scoring, but we'll talk to that. We had a great scout and a great defense. And, I mean, we were very, very thankful that coach gave us the opportunity to come back, and especially with Coach Martin being our head coach as a former manager from here. It was truly family. Sam, what are you doing now then? My wife and two kids, we just moved back to Lexington in October.
Starting point is 00:46:26 We were up in Boston and Florida for a bit, and we're happy to be back. And I work in software and startups, so that keeps me busy. and now I'm assistant GM of TBT, and I'm really excited about it. Yeah, I told you congratulations on your baby. You're like, well, that's number two. Yeah. That was your second one you just had.
Starting point is 00:46:45 Oh, yeah. Yeah, two now, and, you know, he's already starting to get in the basketball. He said, Daddy, you're not bad at basketball. I said, thank you. So you tell him you used to be the victory cigar. Oh, yeah, yeah, he'll find out. Does he have a headband yet? He doesn't have a, he's a long mullet that goes all the way halfway down his back.
Starting point is 00:47:04 so I think the headbands in his future. We've had the players up here talking about the team now from kind of the coaching kind of perspective. What kind of team we got here, John? It's a bunch of pros. That's what it is. I know guys have talked about where they've been playing, whether that's, I mean, Spain or Turkey, Greece, China, Japan, wherever it is.
Starting point is 00:47:26 But it's a bunch of pros. First of all, no one would have been able to put this together. No one outside of 20 Beckham, I will forever, I'll go to my grave saying that. That is the best human being walking this earth. None of these guys, especially some that I've already talked to would have come back if it wasn't Fort Juan. And he put on a great champions weekend this past year.
Starting point is 00:47:49 Yeah, yeah. And he deserves every bit of praise that he could possibly get. Sam, what about you? What kind of team they got? I think this team really wants to play together. Everyone likes each other so far. We got a lot of stuff to do in a very short period of time. We're, you know, two guys at every position that can play, and we're excited.
Starting point is 00:48:11 I mean, we have a great coaching staff. You know, Tyler's got a ton of potential as a coach, and Sean Woods being assistant there, along with hoodie and Jazz Ferguson. It's just a great all-round team. You all are obviously taking it very seriously, but it's got to be cool. Both of you played in like the golden years of Kentucky basketball. The list of your teammates is insane, and a lot of them are here playing in Is it fun just being around your old teammates again aside from the practices?
Starting point is 00:48:37 Oh, I mean, we picked up right where we left off. I was picking up James at the airport the other day, and he called me. He's like, I'm landed, I'm here. And I'm like, oh, man, I forgot to come. I forgot to show up. I'll be there about an hour and a half. And he just started dying laughing. So just same old jokes.
Starting point is 00:48:55 It's like we haven't missed a beat. You mentioned these guys to play with players. John Hood holds the world record for playing with the most pros in college. Think about that era he was at Kentucky, and all those pros he played with for those five seasons. Yep, 26 NBA draft picks. Is that what it is? 26.
Starting point is 00:49:14 26 NBA draft picks, 32 total professionals, and thanks to the ESPN crew at that time in salaries and contracts, it was $1.7 billion in salaries and contracts. Yep. That's amazing. Well, you played a lot of good guys too, man. I did. I did.
Starting point is 00:49:32 You know, we were lucky enough to be there some of the best years that Cal had. And a lot of these guys, too, and they should be celebrated for their achievements. And, you know, they're so excited to be here. Every one of them is just pumped to be here. It's like nostalgia all weekend. You excited to get back in front of the fans and we're up. I know, John, you were just there keeping Kentucky from scoring. So it hasn't been that long since you've been there.
Starting point is 00:49:57 but to be on the, to be, you know, have the crowd behind you again and see all those fans again. Are you all looking forward to Friday night and beyond? It was weird the last time we were here because I was on the opposite bench. And I remember the starting lineups were happening and they're playing Bitter Sweet Symphony or whatever it is before Kentucky gets, they get announced. And I look over and I'm doing the same thing. It's a normal game to have to treat it as a normal game. And I look over and Coach O was looking at me and smiling. Like just like a.
Starting point is 00:50:27 proud dad though because it's like okay we knew you would get into coaching eventually now you're here it's just stranger over there so i am looking looking forward to getting back in front of the fans it will be it'll be special i have to ask you a personal question for you get out of here your brother mitchell yep became like a fan favorite when he was here you may not be able to appreciate it because you were on the bench right but for the people that sat around him he became like a fan favorite in the crowd how's he doing he's doing great he uh it's actually yeah so he he he he he he's should be last night would have been his last night of summer league men's league bowling um they only do it one night in the summers in the fall and in the the true spring they do he'll

And, man, I want to ask you, too, are you still friends with Rob Gruncowski? I am. I am, yeah. Rob's a great guy.
Starting point is 00:51:32 And we actually got to, I train him a little bit in basketball when he retired the first time. So it was a lot of fun. And that all started from you meeting him at the Kentucky Derby. Met him at the Kentucky Derby. I think Drew was there at the after party and ended up in an SUV with about seven Patriots, Welker, Amandola, Grankowski. And we became good buds and ended up living at his. his condo in Seaport in Boston for a while, and he's the man.
Starting point is 00:51:59 That's crazy. He was like, I'm going to go meet Gronk, and then now they're like best buddies living with him. Listen, guys, thank you very much. Best of luck to you guys this weekend. And with you guys coaching them, we expect big things, so hopefully you guys can pull them through. Starting point is 00:52:51 Daniel Orkman's excitement and love for Kentucky is radiating through the radio. I've never been a huge fan, but I'm a fan girl mode right now listening to him. I completely agree. How about that? And I want people to understand. The look he gave us when he said Kentucky needs to go 40 and win a championship, he was not playing games. He was not playing.
Starting point is 00:53:06 That was intense. His eyes felt like I needed to leave and go do something to make sure Kentucky, you know. It felt like he was giving us assignment to help help all this get done. There's no doubt because he's the one guy that still lives here. He's there for a long time. So he lives it. I don't want the show to end. Turn the music off.
