Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headline. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:00 And for more, follow Timbo Slica Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Clivert Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, Hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, ref, my mama wants you to wave at her.
Starting point is 00:01:30 What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford Show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. It's a nice Tuesday. Tomorrow's Wings Day, so remember, Dollar Wings everywhere. Thanks to Ryan, you kind of kept the restaurant chugging. I know you had events
Starting point is 00:03:12 going on at various points and it was successful, right? We've got Singo. It was probably the biggest event we had all summer, well, despite Shannon's concert. That was the biggest event. But Singo was so popular, we're not doing it every Tuesday night here at the restaurant starting tonight. Singo. So what is Singo? It's like Bingo. Only instead of getting a card with numbers on it, you get a card with song titles on it. And they play a song, and you look on your card if you see if you had that song or not. So it's Singo. Singo.
Starting point is 00:03:40 All right. Ryan and I also bartended while you were gone. I heard that. I think I saw a video of it. You all did a good job. I dressed up to spot. Oh, sorry. Yes, I did.
Starting point is 00:03:50 You dressed up for Marvel? Yeah, that's Spider-Man. Well, I appreciate you all doing that stuff. Let me tell you, for those of you who have friends or restaurants you love, and Jamie's over there, He owns restaurants all over. This is the toughest summer for restaurants probably ever. I'm not just talking about KS Bar. Am I right about that, Jamie?
Starting point is 00:04:09 Pretty much anywhere. This has been the heart. So if you have restaurants you love, go visit them over the next month or two because this has been a very difficult summer, really an entire restaurant industry. But you guys helped keep this thing going. So thank you all very much.
Starting point is 00:04:25 Corbred hemp, I wasn't able to take it with me to Europe and offensive. I felt it. It took me, and I took it when I came back, and I was like, oh, this is what I needed. Full Spectrum, flour-only, hemp, CBD, gummies, help you sleep, help you relax. That's what they do for me. Go to cornbread hemp.com. Right now, they have used a promo code KSR.
Starting point is 00:04:47 You get 30% off. It's been a huge change for me, and when I didn't have it, if I could tell, try it at at cornbread hemp.com. I want to talk about the house case real quick. Did you talk about that at all while I was gone? I think was briefly mentioned when Tom was on here one day. I think he talked about that was it. So this is very complicated.
Starting point is 00:05:08 I'm going to give you the simplest version. Basically, there was a case sued against the NCAA for athletes that have played in the last 10 years. So if you're listening to this show and you played Division 1, college basketball, football, baseball or women's basketball, I think this applies to you. And basically it was like you all made money off our images you owe us money, essentially.
Starting point is 00:05:34 It didn't go back farther than that. People have asked why because the Statue of Limitations has gone. So in most states, if you don't file a claim within so many years, you can't do it. So for people who played a long time ago, you're not getting a check because the statute of limitations fell. But in the last, it's either five or ten, depending on the state you're in. If you played football, you're going to get a check for like $11,000. If you played at a major football school. If you played basketball, I think it's like seven.
Starting point is 00:06:04 Like it's different based on the sport you play. But here's why it matters for the future. As part of the settlement, the schools have agreed to give $22 million a year to athletes. All right, to athletes at their school in these major schools. This applies to, I believe, all of the power for conferences. That $22 million can be divided by the school. how they want. So one thing that's going to be interesting is how do schools decide how to do it. Like you're going to tell people a lot about your priorities based on how you do it.
Starting point is 00:06:38 Oh, yeah. Right? Like some schools might give it all the foot. They probably can't give it all to football because of Title IX, but they probably can't, they could give most of it. Yeah. Will they give some to, like Mitch Barnardt's going to make a decision out of his $22 million. What's going to football? What's going to basketball? What's going to baseball?
Starting point is 00:06:56 Like, that's a tough choice for those guys. Oh, yes, it is. All right. So then that's step part one of the deal. Part two, the NCAA and athletes have voluntarily agreed to create an independent arbitrator outside of the NCAA. So this will be a group that has nothing to do with the NCAA that will go and look and see if an NIL deal is real. Basically, are they paying you just to come or are you doing something for it? And you have to do something for it.
Starting point is 00:07:28 Now, how strict is that enforcement going to be? Who knows? But the players have agreed for the first time to have that. And then I think this is the most important thing. And nobody's covering it. They're all focusing on the $22 million. The players agreed to go with the NCAA to Congress and to go with them to try to get the rules in this settlement
Starting point is 00:07:53 made into law for the future. here's why that matters any time they try to limit how much people can make in collectives it's going to fail by the courts but if the law changes it'll be okay and the athletes have agreed to go to Congress with the NCAA and ask for basically a salary cap I think Congress will be a lot more likely to pass it
Starting point is 00:08:21 because the athletes agree and I think in three or four years you're going to have a system where the money won't go crazy. There's still going to be three or four years where it's wild. For college athletes, guys going to college right now, men and women, you are the luckiest people on earth because you've got to be in the Wild West. But in about three or four years, I think there'll be rules. Each team will probably have like a salary cap.
Starting point is 00:08:45 But this will be, I mean, they basically created Ryan the framework for the future of college sports in this lawsuit. and I think it is, it still remains to be seen how it flushes out, but I think it is the start of making it to where college kids make money, but it's not a circus. And I think in about three years it'll get to where people hope it will be. Explain to me like what you mean by, like you get $22 million, and then is there going to be like eventually a salary cap where basketball can't get so much?
Starting point is 00:09:17 So take that $22 million. That $22 million will be divided amongst the players, however the school sees fit. But players can still sign with collectives. Okay? I mean, the collectives ain't going away. But it's created the framework so that eventually there'll be maybe a salary cap on the collectives too. I see.
Starting point is 00:09:38 But that's not there yet. But the $22 million will just be split. And, you know, here's what I think is going to happen. You're going to see after there's going to be one more year of, guys making stupid money. This next year's basketball and football recruits are the luckiest people on earth.
Starting point is 00:10:00 They're going to get big paydays. Then I think starting the next year, when that $22 million starts, schools are going to be like, we're already giving you a half million dollars from the school. We ain't giving you this much from the collective, and it'll start, I think, to settle down. I think we're
Starting point is 00:10:16 going to have one more year where the numbers are outrageous, and then, Drew, I think it'll start to settle down, and it'll become, they'll be like a, I don't know, they'll almost be like we know what people are worth. The market will start to correct itself after, I think, one more year. Yeah, we certainly need that. I mean, good for everyone that's getting paid now. I mean, you've got college players making more than some pros at the college level,
Starting point is 00:10:38 but I'm most interested in how teams or how schools will pick what sports they kind of want to prioritize in that. So, I think that'll be crazy to keep up with. So Title IX does not require, it requires equal opportunity, but not, equal benefit. So what that means is scholarships are seen as an opportunity, which is why men and women have to get the same. But benefit is basically how much money you spend. And Title IX does not require you to spend the same amount of money on men's basketball and women's basketball. I think what's going to happen with this is they're going to say that $22 million, you have to
Starting point is 00:11:14 give women enough that they have equal opportunity. But I don't think you have to give them the exact same amount of money. So I think schools are going to have to prioritize. Mitch Barnhart, and every school will have to do this. I got $22 million. How much have I given it to each program? And you can guess there's going to be some, there's going to be a lot of fighting about it amongst coaches. Let's just use UK as an example. We are probably going to want to spend more on basketball than most of our other SEC components, but that will hurt our football team. Yeah. Or you just give up on baseball.
Starting point is 00:11:59 It's going to be, it is going to be really, really, really hard for a school to be good at all four major sports, football, basketball, baseball, women's basketball. It is going to be hard. I don't think anybody's going to be able to do it because you're going to have to decide. And if you, and I don't envy them from doing it. You know, think about the best basketball programs. Kansas, UConn, Duke, their football teams stink. Kentucky, well, Kentucky, but my point is, Kansas is probably going to get $10 million for basketball
Starting point is 00:12:34 because they don't care about football. So are we going to give $10 million to match Kansas and then give half as much in football as the other schools in the SEC? Well, I don't think that's going to make our coaching staff happy. just don't, I do not envy Mitch Barnhart or any AD, Ryan, for having to make these decisions coming up. Like you said, other schools in the SEC are going to load up on football, probably more than basketball. We're in a situation where it's the opposite here with, but you know, Mitch Barnhart, man, he's going to be fair. He's going to be a guy that's going to be, try to be as fair as he possibly can't. But what would you do if you were the AD? Would you
Starting point is 00:13:11 try to be decent in all of them, try to be great one and then whatever? I mean, like, you're going to have to make that decision. If I'm the AD at Kentucky, I may have it in my head, okay, I got to give football and basketball the same. Okay, let's say you do that. Let's just use that as an example. $22 million. Let's say they say we're going to give women's basketball $5 million, let's say. We're going to give baseball, you know, $1 million. All right, now we have $16 million left. We'll do $8 and $8. Let's say they decide that. But then what if Kansas and Duke are doing 15 each. Yeah, and it's probably that's a scenario that they're going to have to face.
Starting point is 00:13:53 What do you do? Yeah, because, I mean, we know Kentucky fans won't be happy if the program slipping over there because other schools are giving more money their basketball, but they will have, you're in the SEC with football, we don't want to sacrifice. They will have to give women sports enough that it is considered equal opportunity. Now, what is that number? I have no idea. Some court will decide that one day.
Starting point is 00:14:14 But that split between basketball and football And every school in the country is going to have to do this. This isn't just Kentucky. You're going to see coaches, you know, what happened with Mark Stoops and John Calgary last summer? By the way, that's going to start happening at more schools. Sure it will. It just is because schools are going to have to decide.
Starting point is 00:14:33 So if Kentucky sees Kansas giving $10 million for basketball, but yet they might see Tennessee give $10 million for football. And also remember how much money goes. How many football players do you have? A bunch. A bunch. How many basketball players do you have? players are you really going to pay eight so then football coaches could reasonably say we should get a lot
Starting point is 00:14:54 more money y'all are only getting eight guys we have to pay 85 i just you know this goes to mark stoops earlier we talked about when he was kind of complaining about nil i in baseball shannon you big baseball guy right yeah they've now made it to where pretty much everybody that's a gym in baseball is a numbers guy. They're not just former baseball players. They are smart, intellectual statistics people. I'm going to make you a prediction. The days of ADs being former football players are like,
Starting point is 00:15:27 bang, dang, dude, how you doing? Go, go. That's done. You're going to have businessmen that are ADs now and women. You're going to have businessmen and women trying to figure out how do we move this money around. And every football program is going to have a money manager. Yeah. That's just going to be how it is because I don't know, Drew, how you do it otherwise.
Starting point is 00:15:49 The days of like, well, you were good at running a defensive set, so we'll put you in charge of this $100 million athletic department. That stuff's over. Yeah, and we've been saying for a while, they already need GMs to keep up with this stuff as it is, and it's only getting more difficult. I mean, you think about Nick Sabin, he said he stepped away because his postseason meetings were no longer about position or getting better. It was just how much money am I getting paid?
Starting point is 00:16:11 Well, and it's the conversations. And it may just be the case that they hire. less people like Nick Saban, and they hire more people who, I could see a world where the head coach is a figurehead now. You hire an offensive and defensive coordinator who knows football, and you hire a head coach that knows how to run a business. I could, I could see that. And I think that's probably we're headed to something like that down the stretch. We'll take a break. Be right back. We are here at KS. Barr, it's Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind.
Starting point is 00:16:44 Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise. Breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines. We go straight to the source, the athletes themselves. Their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real.
Starting point is 00:17:08 From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context and ask the questions everybody wants answered. Sports Slice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Starting point is 00:17:29 and the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. What's up guys? This is Clivert Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker. This linebacker whops up to me, he goes,
Starting point is 00:17:46 Hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out of my. Quarterback on office blue of 42. Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker.
Starting point is 00:18:04 Listen to the Cliverts show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. American soccer is about to explode. The World Cup is coming. Ramon sending on to Ernie Stewart for chip. I'm Tad Ramos. I'm Tom Boe. On our podcast, Inside American Soccer, you'll get the real storylines.
Starting point is 00:18:31 I'm not worried about Policic. I'm not worried about Balligan. I'm not worried about McKinney. My only concern is what happens in the back. The biggest decisions. If you're going to look at stats and numbers, he has no shot at making this World Cup team. And the truth about the U.S. national team.
Starting point is 00:18:49 It wouldn't be a huge support. surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals. The World Cup is almost here. Experience it all with us. Listen to Inside American Soccer with Tom Bogart and Tab Ramos on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your podcast. So this is Chappelle Rohn, one of my favorites. Yeah. On your playlist now? No.
Starting point is 00:19:19 I mean, it's not meant for me, but that's fine. But I just, I didn't realize how big, you know, I didn't realize. as a big Chappelle Rhone was. I mean, you thought it was a group. Women that work here, I'm sure they know. Did you know Chappelle Rhone? What? Chapel Rhone.
Starting point is 00:19:35 Chapel Rhone. See, I told you. I told you Chapel Rhone was big. So we learned a lot. You know, we've learned it's not a group. It's a female. I got the pronunciation right. We know it's Chapel Rhone now.
Starting point is 00:19:46 When you tell stories like this, it reminds me when we were all doing a pregame show at the NCAA tournament and there was some person dancing and singing and the place was just full of kids, and they're screaming hollow, like, who in the world is this? And you looked them up and they had like 13 million Twitter followers. Well, I was, when I was in Madrid, there were all these people lined up outside of a hotel to meet this singer. And I kept saying, who is this? Who's this person?
Starting point is 00:20:09 They gave me the name. And they had like 27 million Instagram followers. And it was like a Latin America singer that I, of course, never heard of. It just goes to show we don't know anything. Red State Barbecue has been serving quality, smoked meats to Central Kentucky for nearly 14 years. If you want brisket, Pullport, chicken, one-of-a-kind, smoked wings, everything.
Starting point is 00:20:29 Go to Red State Barbecue.com. They got baked beans, grits. It's great stuff. It's out on Georgetown Road in Lexington. It's barbecue the way you want it to be good. I'm going to go there at some point soon. I do love their food. I've had it a long time.
Starting point is 00:20:44 We did a little show there while you were gone. Oh, did you? Yeah. That's awesome. Who's up next, Shannon? Rick. Rick. Rick.
Starting point is 00:20:49 How are you, Rick? Hey, I'm great, man. Welcome back, Brother. Thank you. By the way, I bought tickets to Bridgestone Arena sold out for Sarah Carpenter, all four-foot-11 of her for my grandda. Or Sabrina, even. Yeah, go ahead. Oh, yeah, Sabrina Carper, you're right.
Starting point is 00:21:09 How did I get there wrong? Okay, my favorite person that was on the radio while you were gone was Marsa Poe. I wish she was on there more. And I wanted to say for this UK fan, I don't want to speak for everybody. everybody. But the last few months it's been wonderful. With all the basketball recruiting and all the wonderful sportsmanship
Starting point is 00:21:32 of the baseball and then we got into basketball, we got the Olympics players on two different countries teams. I just think what happened at Louisville is the most despicable thing. I've seen
Starting point is 00:21:48 since Ryan got punched down of South Carolina. Yeah. Well, listen, Rick, I appreciate it. It has been, It has been a good, I do think since Mark Pope got here, Ryan, it's been a good cleansing of the fan base. I mean, it feels like good vibes all around. And I think it will continue, at least through the South Carolina game, if we can win in week two of the football. Yeah, it's been a couple months of you with Pope getting the job, getting his roster, Reed getting drafted so high. And then even the Law Famillion team, I think it has drawn a lot of our fan base.
Starting point is 00:22:22 We were kind of a fractured fan base there for a while. I think it's all drawn us together. Do you think, Drew, when it comes to basketball season, specifically the non-conference, I've felt like for the past three or four years, that this fan base has been kind of blah about basketball until like February when we all get our hopes up, whereas it used to be every game was kind of life or death. Do you think in this first Mark Pope year we'll be kind of back to those. first few months kind of hanging on every game. I think so, especially with having Duke right away, some of the marquee opponents. I think the reset was good for everybody and getting back on board.
Starting point is 00:23:03 I have some friends that were lifelong UK fans, and they would text, I didn't even know we're playing tonight, things like that as the end of the last era was wrapping up. But now I think everybody's ready to see what's next and they're back on board. Well, part of it was Cal would always act like none of the games matter. Yeah. You know, every time we'd lose, we'd just go, wait till March, wait till March, wait to March and it does make you think, well, you say that enough, people are going to say, well, why am I watching these games if they don't matter? We'll wait until March then. I guess we'll wait to March and then we'll lose to Oakland and St. Peters, and it'll be,
Starting point is 00:23:31 it'll be awesome. But I do think you're going to, the excitement for that Duke game is going to be through the room, right? I think we're going to have our best big blue madness. I think we're going to have our best big blue madness that we've had in a long time. Duke, I mean, they're going to be a tough team, but just having that matchup on the schedule is going to get people so excited. and it's in Atlanta an easy trip to make. I think that's not the first game this year,
Starting point is 00:23:55 but that's a great way to start the Pope era. Who's up next? Pickle ball Paul. Pickle ball, Paul. Oh, no. I mean, there's nobody else. Nobody else on the phone. Like, you can't find anyone else to call.
Starting point is 00:24:08 Matt, what's going on? I'm glad you had a good trip. I'm glad you're back. I got two things, if you let me. I have a question to Ryan, and I want to give you a little thing. How about one thing? You give me your best thing.
Starting point is 00:24:20 Well, your best thing. you know you you guys somehow know your ratings on your shows you know due to i guess clicks whatever i got a little story i can prove how great your pre-show ratings are it was a week ago this morning as i was going to do my tuesday morning thing i said what's time to turn on shananan the champ and billy and i didn't have it on five seconds and you're not going to believe what and who they're talking about and within five minutes i had eight texts four of them from out of state saying you got to listen to KSR they're talking about you. Your boy Shannon has turned to leave.
Starting point is 00:24:55 I'm so proud of him. Yeah, well, I'm not. He's not a radio champ of the world. He's going to be the radio old pickleball champ of the world. He's a traitor. I'm going to do a Trump true social post and say Donald, excuse me, Shannon, the dude is a lousy, no-good scum for playing pickleball. Can I ask the questions of Ryan about.
Starting point is 00:25:14 Quickly, yes. Yes. I think Ryan would be at Dane maybe had to, will you come on. might call a sophomore slump. I'm just curious if during the offseason, what Ryan's seen is, if Dane's gotten bigger, stronger, what's just going to guess? I'm just going to guess that Ryan thinks Dane's going to have a big season. Is that way?
Starting point is 00:25:30 I'm just going to guess that that's what you think. I also is, I've known this kid for a long time. I've never seen him work harder during an off season. I mean, I think him and Barry on both. I think we're a little disappointed how last year went for both of them. And they both have dedicated themselves working out on their own, putting in extra time. I'd expect big seasons from both of those guys. Yeah, I hope so.
Starting point is 00:25:50 I mean, that goes back to what we were talking about yesterday. Brock Vandergriff, man, if he's good, they got the receivers. Yeah. I mean, they got the receivers. They got the tight ends. Offensive line should be better. It's like, you know, I don't know if you saw there was a guy on line yesterday that said Kentucky they thought would have one of the best defense in the country. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:07 That's why I think it's going to be the best stoop's had since he's been here. And he's had a lot of good ones. I mean, they have the depth. They lost three defensive linemen. Kind of just shrugged it off. Like, we're right. We got more. I'm excited about it, man, I just, we got to beat South Carolina.
Starting point is 00:26:22 That's it. I can't think of a year where the second game mattered more than it does in this one. Who's next? George. George, go ahead, George. Hey, guys, how's it going? Good. Hey, Ryan, this is George with Rain Blaster, a single host for tonight.
Starting point is 00:26:40 Okay. Is our single guy, Matt? Yeah, I'm going to give you the opportunity to help me pick out the playlist for tonight. Oh, good. But we can't do it right now on the air. So you're going to do Singo tonight at the bar, but we can't do it on the air. Oh, no, no, no. All I need to know, Ryan, what year did you graduate?

Hey, I'm Deanna Maria Riva, actress, mother, lover, and a Gen X woman walking through life one hot flash and hormonal crying jag at a time. You ladies know what I mean. I'll bet you a paramedapausal chin here you do. So let's talk about it. Join me on my new podcast, How Hard Can It Be with the Adamania Riva,
Starting point is 00:29:21 where I call on my Gen X squads from Ohio to Hollywood as we navigate Midlife's most fantastic BS. All of a sudden, I'd had hanginess happening on my own. I was like, what the hell is that? I was married when I had her, so I didn't even consider how empty that nest was going to be. Mood swings, night sweats, fupas, sex drive. Wait, what sex? Dating at 45. How high can it be getting naked at 50 with a lot?
Starting point is 00:29:48 new guy. That one's kind of hard. Well, that's lighting. They say we can't polish a turd, but we're sure going to try. So let's get blunt with laughs, tears, or tears of laughter, and dive into it, unfiltered and unbothered and ask, how hard can it be? I cannot believe I'm about to say this out loud in public. Starting point is 00:30:23 Here's Matt Jones. Well done, Shannon. I love this song. I love it. Forget the song. Just what about the pick. He knows. He knows what to do.
Starting point is 00:30:32 Shannon knows what to do. And with that in mind, everybody here, join me. Today is the 20th anniversary of Shannon being on the radio. Yeah. Thank you. Thank you. How about that? That's very cool.
Starting point is 00:30:44 20 years ago that Shannon, the dude, went on the radio. and now 20 years later. I mean, I think in an industry that is now more difficult to have a career in than almost any, Shannon has persevered. We've watched, I mean, you and I, you've been here five years longer than me, but you and I have watched cut after cut, and Shannon still goes on. So congrats by me. Yeah, I appreciate that.
Starting point is 00:31:11 Thank you very much. It's crazy how fast 20 years goes by, though. You look back and go, there's no way that's 20 years ago. But, yeah, really, really has been a fun ride. I mean, I sit there and think about the first day I did a show in September 2010. The first day I did a show at I heart. And I remember, I even remember walking in and all that stuff. And, man, it does not seem that long ago.
Starting point is 00:31:37 And then, you know. It's scary. It is scary. Man, we're getting old. It is a little bit scary. I think I actually think, honestly, my age hit me. for the first time on this trip. In what way?
Starting point is 00:31:50 I was sitting there. I was sitting there one night having dinner. And I met somebody and they asked me how old I was. And I said that I was 45. And they were like, really? You don't seem that old. And then I was like, yeah. Like, that's halfway through your life.
Starting point is 00:32:11 Like, like. If you're lucky enough to make 90. If you're like it, like, yeah. I mean, it could end tomorrow. But I mean like it's kind of all downhill from that. I don't mean like quality of life. But I'm just saying like, you know, I remember when I was young thinking 45, my goodness, that person's ancient. And, you know, now you have that.
Starting point is 00:32:32 And then somebody like Ryan who's like 94, it's like got to be even more. I told you earlier this year, you are now the age I was when I started doing this show with you. Yeah. Forty-five. And like, how old are you, Mario? It's 24. So like I sit there and think about when I was 24, I was graduating law school. Like, you know, I mean, that's nuts.
Starting point is 00:33:01 And for, you know, and for Shannon, we've all seen this, man. You make no money. The hour stink. Well, he does now make money. You don't have to look at him now and say he makes no money. You're just like with Shannon, we've seen you make no money. No, everything's automated. You know, he still has found a way.
Starting point is 00:33:17 He's got his niche and he's the best in the business right now. He is. He does an awesome job. One person writes, Matt, I'm one of the people that always used to complain to you on Twitter that I didn't like when you talked about politics and it angered me. Then when all the news was coming this summer, I found myself continuing to think, I wonder what Matt would say about this. What does that say about me?
Starting point is 00:33:38 It says that you didn't hate me talking about politics as much as you thought you did. You just hate that I disagree with you. That's what you don't like. But you can get over it and you want to, you know, there's nothing wrong. There's nothing wrong with being able to talk respectfully about it. I literally just unfriended somebody on the break who was on Facebook, somebody I was unfriend who said, if you vote for Harris and Walls, you are dumb. And I was like, well, why am I, I don't even know this person?
Starting point is 00:34:05 Why am I friends with this person for saying that? Because I wouldn't say that about somebody who voted for Trump. So like, you know. There's a lot of us. We're not all supposed to agree on everything. It'd be a boring place if we all thought the exact same thing. John Rothstein said today that he thinks Kentucky comes in ninth in the SEC in basketball. I didn't love that.
Starting point is 00:34:25 Ninth in the SEC in basketball. What do you think of that? I think it's a little low. I mean, no way I would pick them like, you know, top two or three. But nine seems to be a little low seeing the talent that we know is already here, you know. When you say there's no way you would pick them top two or three, Is that just, like, I don't think I would either. I think I'd pick them fourth or fifth.
Starting point is 00:34:44 Yeah. But it wouldn't shock me if they were good enough to win the SEC. No, no, not at all. I would be more shocked if they failed and finished night. I agree with that. You know? I think I'd be more surprised if we were bad than if we're really good. Me too.
Starting point is 00:35:00 There's just, there's some teams at the top that are going to be very good this year. Alabama a load of Alabama is going to be really good. Tennessee. But I can think, but, you know, as the games get played, I think Kentucky can play their way into that conversation. I think nine's way too low, though. Well, who, I mean, who does he have ahead of us? I'm sure he's got Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, maybe, and then what?
Starting point is 00:35:18 A&M has a lot of people back. I didn't see where he put them on their list, but they'd be up near the top. Yeah, I just, it feels like to me, I know this is a completely new team. His reasoning, by the way, was he was like, all of these players need to be a lot better than they were at their last school. That was his reasoning for putting Kentucky there. But I don't know that I totally agree because I think we have nine to ten guys that all had huge roles at their other schools. So why wouldn't it work?
Starting point is 00:35:51 We're Kentucky. Obviously, we'd prefer to be number one. But I'm actually looking forward to a year where instead of starting at the top and falling down, we might be like 20th in the preseason poll. And maybe let's climb up and see what we can do. Because in the past, we say all the time, we were winning the summer for several years and not winning in March. so I don't want to be ranked 20th every preseason,
Starting point is 00:36:09 but for this first year it will be a little different starting a little farther back. Who's up next? Let's go to Lance. Lance. Go ahead, Lance. Hey, Matt. I was giving you a call on the – well, first, welcome back. But I was giving you a call on the $22 million. And I felt like your explanation for the split or, you know, just the different ideas,
Starting point is 00:36:31 was kind of over-complicating when why wouldn't they just take that $22 million? look at the percentage of revenue that each sport brings in and divide it out that way. They could. They very well could, and there will probably be schools that will do that. But let's play that out. At the University of Kentucky, I don't know the exact numbers, but I would guess football brings in three to four times the revenue basketball does. Are you going to give the UK basketball team $3 or $4 million,
Starting point is 00:37:05 and Kansas has 10 and Duke has 10 just because it seems fair? Yeah, I think one, I think that could prevent some of the distance between the coaches because then it's kind of more money. But what if it prevents you from winning? I mean, that's the thing. Yes, that would make it to where the football and basketball coaches might feel like it's quote unquote fair, but it also may make it to where this basketball program that our entire lives has competed for national championships,
Starting point is 00:37:36 it becomes much harder to do it. Well, because the percentages I was just kind of running through my head, just as an example, would be if football brings in 40% of the athletic revenue. It brings it more than that. I know, I've just given generic numbers, you know, and then say basketball is half of that, so it's 20%. It's not. If it was 40 and 20, that's different.
Starting point is 00:37:58 But the difference is going to be much greater than that. At every school in America, at every school in America, football is the money goer, even in Kentucky. I think the only school in America where basketball makes more money than football is Duke. That's the only one. Pretty much every other school, it's football. No, no, and I understand that, but I know that's kind of something we've boasted about different websites and just different things that boasted about over the years was how much revenue our basketball did bring up. But the football's more.
Starting point is 00:38:32 Because the revenue, you have to remember that revenue comes mostly from television. All right. It comes from ticket sales, too. But just do the math. Think about how many people are going to the games for football games. Think about. Oh, no. I'm just telling you, listen, man, I mean, the question is,
Starting point is 00:38:50 do you want to have a basketball program that pays as third as much as for players as the other top programs? If you're okay with that, then what you're saying will work. But if you're not okay with that, then it's a tougher call. Well, I mean, especially Kentucky fans because we, you know, most of my life, it's always been basketball first and then football trailing behind. But, yes, the total amount of money handed out would be different, but due to the fact that basketball is only carrying 12 scholarships and football carrying. But again, you're skipping over.
Starting point is 00:39:25 What do you do when Duke offers the player we want twice as much money? Well, I'm saying, though, with the less people, your split would still be higher. I appreciate the call. You're still missing my point. It's not just about the split between basketball and football. It's about the split between Kentucky and their rivals. The question is, if our rivals for national titles are spending more money on basketball than we are, which makes it harder for us to win, are we cool with that?
Starting point is 00:39:54 Now, maybe the answer is yes, I don't know. But you can't just go, well, it's fair between basketball and football. We have to play against other people. And same thing for football. Let's say we give football $11 million. But Texas A&M decides to give football 20. Yeah. You cool with that?
Starting point is 00:40:12 Those are the decisions we have to make. And I think most of our fan base, if that happens, Duke was able to get a kid because they were able to give me more money than we were, that's not going to sit well with most UK fans. Remember that the programs we consider our peers, for the most part, don't care at all about football. Yukon, Duke, Kansas, North Carolina's a little bit like us. They care some. Baylor, they care some.
Starting point is 00:40:44 Gonzaga doesn't even have football. So, I mean, like, you just have to think about that. Yeah, I mean, it's going to be tough as fans because there's going to be times where we're going to wish the more was going to one team. As you're saying, if a Duke or someone's giving it so much more, that's going to be hard to sit back when we want to be the best at everything. There may come a day where Kentucky has to decide John Wall or Will Levis. Who do you want?
Starting point is 00:41:12 I'm serious. That day is coming for sports programs. They're going to have to decide. You know, you want Tim Couch or do you want Anthony Davis? Because you don't get them both. And so, you know, when that happens, it's going to be interesting to see what people decide, right? Hey, the beautiful thing about being a sports fan is that you, there's games all year. You've been betting on baseball, I bet, haven't you?
Starting point is 00:41:41 Lots of Olympics. I went five and oh, betting on the TBT. Yeah, a lot for me. You could bet on the TBT? Oh, yeah. The spread's below. Oh, I didn't know that. Well, you can go to draft kings now and they've got all of it.
Starting point is 00:41:52 Well, they don't have TBT anymore because it's over. But you can get Olympics all that. And if you're new to Draft Kings, you can check out a bonus. New customers bet $5 and they get $150 and bonus bets instantly. It's draftkings.com. KSR's partner. We're going to have a ton of stuff going through football season with Draft Kings. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, A, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What?

Starting point is 00:44:04 Ramos sending on to Ernie Stewart the chip. I'm Todd Ramos. I'm Tom Boe. On our podcast, Inside American Soccer, you'll get the real storylines. I'm not worried about Policic. I'm not worried about Balagan. I'm not worried about McKinney. My only concern is what happens in the back. The biggest decisions. If you're going to look at stats and numbers, he has no shot at making this World Cup team. And the truth about the U.S. national. team. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a
Starting point is 00:44:41 great run into the semifinals. The World Cup is almost here. Experience it all with us. Listen, inside American soccer with Tom Bogart and Tab Ramos on the IHeart Radio app, Apple podcast, wherever you get your podcast. Welcome back. Final segment of Kentucky Sports Radio here at the KS Bar and Grill. I was talking with folks during the break about the whole, everybody's got the question
Starting point is 00:45:10 of how do you do the money. Another thing to remember not to get too far into weeds is the schools don't have to spend the money. So there might be schools who decide we're just not going to spend it. Like Vandy might just pocket it. I mean, they can. They have the ability to spend up to that, but they don't have to. So that's another interesting point. Could they even give some do soccer and volleyball?
Starting point is 00:45:34 They give it to whatever they want. They just have to make sure they give enough to women's sports that it's considered equal opportunity. and I don't know some court's going to decide what that is someday. I don't know what it is right now. What is that song I heard Shannon during the break? Check the back seat. Check the back seat. It's like the new buckle up, put your phone down.
Starting point is 00:45:58 So is that like a public service to tell you not to forget your baby? That is. Yeah. Yep. You get that in your head. Then you sing that song before you get out of your car. I'm not trying to trivialize this because I know. that it happens sometimes and can lead to tragic things but is that something that
Starting point is 00:46:16 do people like for the mothers out there have you accidentally forgotten your it feels like that would be a hard thing to forget it's not like me losing my sunglasses everywhere I go nor it happens which is awful but to have a song about it that's how often is it happening well that's why I'm wondering does it happen more than I realize if they feel like we need a song about it let me see if there's any statistics on this it seems like every years. Did you ever leave your kid in the back seat? No, I don't remember leaving my kid in the back seat. I mean, not to a tragic result, but have you ever gone somewhere and been like, oh, my kid was here and now they're not? No. You see those horrible stories, though. It happens.
Starting point is 00:46:55 One every nine days, which tracks hot car deaths for kids. Well, that's deaths, though. That's not just, I mean, that's awful, but that's deaths. That's not just like, clearly it must happen other times that doesn't lead to death, right? Well, and nine seems very. I mean, I would say one in nine and death is horrible. It's horrible, but that's a big country. But that is horrible. Don't be wrong. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:19 Well, it's happened a lot. Didn't mean to be depressing here at the end of the show. Who's next? Let's go to Doug. Doug, go ahead, Doug. Hey, guys, this is Doug out in Spokane, Washington. What's going on? Hey, I just wanted to give a shout out to 1985 class.
Starting point is 00:47:36 I actually grew up in Barberville. Yeah. graduated from Knox Central in 85. And I heard Matt mention it yesterday when you got back, by the way, welcome back. Let's get some steam behind this Seattle trip that's meant for you guys. Yeah, that's probably what we're going to do, whether they like it or not. We're either going to go to Clemson or Seattle. Clemson's just not far enough, so I think we're probably going to go to –
Starting point is 00:48:00 But the thing is, I don't know that we'll ever play at Clemson again. Didn't we go to Little John Coliseum on one of our trips? You and I did. You and I did. We went to... I've already got my tickets for the Gonzaga game, and I'm ready to roll, so you guys should come on out. Should be good.
Starting point is 00:48:16 I appreciate the call. Somebody just sent me this. This is the official Kentucky revenue for the year. All right, so football brings in 29.4%. Meteorites bring in 21.4. Now, of those media rights, though, 75% of that is for football. So that would mean football gets 40... is about 44% of the revenue.
Starting point is 00:48:39 Basketball is 17. So that means you're basically looking at nearly three to one football to basketball. Most schools, it's probably 6 to 1, 7 to 1, 8 to 1. Kentucky, like I said, is 3 to 1. So that's just something to think about. Comments, thoughts? I hope this doesn't, and it will, raise back the basketball football school thing that we had to go through before, but that's going to come up at every university that's going to have to deal with this,
Starting point is 00:49:11 having to prioritize one of the other when your fans love both. Yeah, it's going to happen. Schools are going to have to become a basketball school or a football school. A lot of them are. Which will be, but the good thing is most of them will choose football. So this is Kentucky, if you're looking at it's about three to one. Just to keep going, the men's and women sports outside of football basketball is 1%. that puts it in perspective
Starting point is 00:49:39 Now women's basketball probably is up now to three or four or something like that But we better take good care of Kenny Brooks over there So we're talking about the excitement of this summer We didn't mention him You just have to you have to remember that What's next? Will Will go ahead Will
Starting point is 00:49:53 Hey doing guys Welcome back Matt Thank you And Shannon, congrats on 20 years Thank you So I live up here in Buffalo And last time I was in Kentucky the guys at the barbershop
Starting point is 00:50:08 I brought them some 12 packs of ski and I brought them some Red State barbecue sauce and they absolutely loved it. I'm like their favorite customer now. I could run for a mayor. Well, good. Good Kentucky stuff. So next time, yeah, so next time I'm in Kentucky
Starting point is 00:50:24 in a couple weeks, what should I bring back for these New Yorkers? That's a good question. You're going to New York. You're trying to bring something that's definitively Kentucky. You're going to take bourbon, right? Definitely bourbon. Maybe some L81. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:39 I like L81. What else would you take? A basketball. Beer cheese is everywhere, but there's some here that's unique. Yeah. Well, it originated over here in Winchester. Berkeley. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:51 That's a good one. So I think that'd be a good one. Don't give them to. Take a hot brown. Don't probably wouldn't travel well. Yeah, I would say, I'd say give them a great bourbon, AL8, that's acquired taste, but then maybe some beer. And some beer cheese.
Starting point is 00:51:04 Yeah. So I appreciate. the call. Court physical therapy. If you got injured, I had a fall. Shannon, you remember my butt bruised? Oh, yeah. I still got the picture. I had one just as bad. On your trip? Yeah. As bad as that one? It was close. It was very close. I remember thinking, I wish I could go to court physical therapy. But they didn't have that in Portugal. So court physical therapy. It's court.com. K-O-R-T-com. No reason to be in pain. Go, you don't have to have a doctor's referral. They take all your insurance. It's court.com. That's K-O-R-T-com.
Starting point is 00:51:37 You ready for this advertiser meeting and podcast meeting? I'm going to go take a two-hour nap to get ready for my two-hour meeting. You're able to just take a two-hour mid-day now? I am the king of the mid-afternoon nap. There's no doubt about it. I will say I envy your brain just in the ability to turn everything off. Yep.
