This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me.
Starting point is 00:01:19 He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. A rep. My mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's he at? Hey, Miss Parker.

Unfiltered conversations from night sweats to futas to scheduling sacks. Wait, what sex?
Starting point is 00:02:35 Is it just me or does every woman my age want to look at Pinterest instead of having sex sometimes? They say we can't polish a turn, but we're sure going to try. So let's get blunt with laughs, tears, or tears of laughter. Listen to How Hard Can It Be with Diana Maria Riva on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:03:15 Call 859-271 joke or visit ComedyoffBroadway.com. This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones. Welcome, everyone, Kentucky Sports Radio Thursday, August 8th. I am Matt Jones here at the KS Bar and Grill, where we will be here all day. Love to see you. Come out on a beautiful day. Have lunch.
Starting point is 00:03:42 See Ryan Lemon, Drew Franklin, Mario, myself. Shannon is in Louisville, and you can give us a shout on the Clark's Pumman Shop phone line. I'd love to hear from you. What I'd like to hear is like from some folks just sort of saying, hey, what's going on? If you have questions or whatever, just hear some good voices. 859-280-2287. A-Vision Auto Glass Text Machine is 7-7-17. 274-5-254 in this edition, sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office. We call T.J. I'll make them pay.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Next week, Ryan, I think I'm going to do the, we do it about once a year, the unpopular opinion day. Yes. Where people give their unpopular opinions about things. I always enjoy that to hear. What is it, what is something you think that's not going to get you a round of applause? Yeah, and we all have them. Sometimes we're a little afraid to mention them, but so we're giving you a platform. It's like a free day. Free day. It's like a trust zone. and we need it because some people get really upset. I'll give you an example, Drew.
Starting point is 00:04:38 You saw the text machine yesterday. A lot of people want to be called coach in this world, like a lot of people. And they got mad at me, even though Shannon was much angrier about saying he wasn't going to say, coach. Nobody wrote and said Shannon is a jerk. They wrote and said, Matt is a jerk because you don't show respect for coaches. Shannon was much worse about it. But on unpopular opinion day, you can call in and go, I don't want to call doctor's doctor. allowed to do that on that day if you want.
Starting point is 00:05:05 Every once in a while we hit a topic that I think everyone wants to chime in on. And yesterday, the coach, Coach Speak, was certainly one of those. Gone for three days. Talked about UK football, UK basketball, talked about my trip, talked about former president, somebody trying to shoot them. What gets the most text messages? Amen. Call them people coach or not.
Starting point is 00:05:24 That's what everybody weighs in on. So it just goes to show what people like. Now, a couple things here. First of all, if you come here today, it's very nice to see Freddie Magdal. Yeah. Freddie Wayne. Haven't seen Freddie in a long time.
Starting point is 00:05:38 Great to see you looking great. I hope we'll talk in a little bit. You walked in right as we started, but it's great to see you, Freddie. I've missed you. So nice to see Freddie here. Secondly, tonight, well, first of all, I want to take, can I tell you about yesterday?
Starting point is 00:05:55 Okay. Please. So, you know, I don't know if you saw while I was gone. I put out a list. of the food that I was missing in Europe. Yes. Because I was trying to eat healthier, and I was like exercising.
Starting point is 00:06:08 But I was like, I want to be honest with you, I'm missing some food. And if you remember, I said I miss McDonald's Diet Coke. We've gotten right back in there. Bingo. That's not been something. You don't have to worry about that. True, I got right back into it.
Starting point is 00:06:20 You had it Monday when you came in. Then the KS Bar wings. Got right back into that. Got that the day I came back. I also said the roosters boneless wings with the sauce. got that one day when I came back. Nerd gummy clusters. Got plenty of those.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Good with the nerd gummy clusters. So I'm only eating like four or five a day. Like, not packs, four or five little ones. Because you get into that, I think that's where I put on a bunch of weight was the nerd gumming clusters. The only thing I hadn't had was Skyline. Oh, here we go. Now, Skyline is not exactly good, Drew, for your diet. No, especially when you're already working in the gummy clusters also.
Starting point is 00:07:01 So when you're trying to stay healthy, you know, skyline is a detour. So I hadn't been yet. So I was sitting there yesterday afternoon, had an important meeting went well, and I thought, all right, it's time to reward myself with some skyline. So how do we make skyline okay? I decided it would be by walking to skyline. Oh, okay. All right.
Starting point is 00:07:25 It's hot outside. So walk, you know where I live? Yes. I went to a place they have a sauna on campus like I go to. A woman runs that. I went and got my sauna. Bad decision on a walk because then you get kind of dehydrated. So I walk like two miles there and then from her sauna to skyline is three miles.
Starting point is 00:07:49 I was like I got this. Wow. Got this. A couple things I didn't realize. First of all, when you're dehydrated on the sauna. Not a best time to go walking when it's 90 degrees in human. Second, Richmond Road's a lot longer than I remember. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:07 Like, I kind of think of Richmond Road as you're downtown, then you're at Cowell's Old House, then you're at Skyline. I thought those were the only things. In that order? In that order. You're downtown, Cow's House, Skyline. There's a lot in between it, Drew. There is a lot.
Starting point is 00:08:25 surprisingly from Cow's House to Skyline is a lot. That's a hall. That's a hall. And there's no sidewalks. Okay. Richmond Road, after Cow's House, has no sidewalks. Why? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:08:41 None. There's none. We learned little during Shannon's walk. Shannon, you remember that during your walk. Of course I remember. Like, there's, I feel like, even Nicholseil Road has sidewalks. Why doesn't Richmond Road have sidewalks? Not on either side.
Starting point is 00:08:56 They don't have sidewalks. And usually the maps, when I figure out where to walk, will not let you walk on things that aren't sidewalks if you put walk in. But it said it was okay. So Linda Gorton put some sidewalks between Cal's House and Skyline, because I felt like I was walking for my life on Rich Monroe. Where was Cal walking his dogs that time? That was on a sidewalk.
Starting point is 00:09:16 Was that not in that name? I think he was just walking up and back in front of his house for the news cameras to see. That was one of the most blatant like, I'm just walking my dog. Like, well, why are you walking the same 20 yards back and forth, gal? But anyway, by the time I got to skyline, I thought I was going to fall down. Like, I was sweating, and I walked in, and there's a girl that works there that has seen me there often, and she, I knew I didn't look good when she goes, are you okay? My plan was to walk back.
Starting point is 00:09:47 I ended up Uber and back after the skyline. But it was worth it because it was good. Were you able to enjoy your skyline? I mean, I was walking like seven, eight miles a day, nine miles a day in Europe, but we forget it's not as humid over there. Like it is, the humidity here, Drew, is a whole other thing. Like 90 degrees here is a different thing than 90 degrees anywhere in Europe except maybe like Greece.
Starting point is 00:10:13 Yeah, now I like that you halfway wanted to dehydrate yourself. At the finish line, you just want a big bowl of chili waiting for you. I mean, you need a walk advisor. What do you do? The sauna was not a good idea before I walked. But I'm glad I did it. And now I've had all the foods. And now I don't have to eat them all for a while because we're not going to do that, right? And now you check the other thing you've missed, which is driving around the state with us coming up next.
Starting point is 00:10:39 So we're going to Hopkinsville. So that gets us to every year I try to do a kind of state of KSR like meeting, like an annual retreat. Usually our retreat ends up being like, you know, Pikeville, really, you know, glamorous place. Yes. So this year, it's going to be Hopkinsville because we're doing a show at A-Vision class tomorrow. And by the way, everybody in Hopkinsville
Starting point is 00:11:04 would love to see you out there tomorrow. Come say hello while we're there. But here's what I need tonight. I need restaurant slash after-hour recommendations in Hopkinsville. So 772-7-4-7-4-7-4. Where should we eat tonight for our meeting? Now, it needs to be a place where we can talk to each other for the dinner, right? Because that's when we're doing our meeting.
Starting point is 00:11:29 So it can't be like some place where there's a DJ playing. And then where's our after-hours place? Because Mario says he's going to bring out his Michael Jackson smooth criminal shoes tonight in Hopkinsville. So we need somewhere where he will fit in with that. Yeah, I'm trying to think in years past, we went to the BW3s in Hopkinsville. We stopped going to BW3s when KSR open. We've been to Ferrells. We've been there in Hopkinsville.
Starting point is 00:11:55 That's not a dinner place. That's really good. That's what I'm having for lunch. That's like a lunch place. I mean, where we've been, you're telling things we've been to a decade ago. We went to, there's that Mexican restaurant. We've been to a couple of times. It's pretty popular.
Starting point is 00:12:08 And then there's the place that's next to the Hampton Inn. What's it called? You can walk to from the Hampton Inn. in. We've done that one before. I'm trying to think where we've been. I'm a little out of touch with a steakhouse that was really good, but it was really small. Do you remember that? It was like a
Starting point is 00:12:22 downtown steakhouse. Oh, I think I do kind of remember that. So anyway, if you're in Hoptown or you know Hoptown, tell us where we should eat tonight. And then if you're around Hoptown, at the dinner, you can say hello, but we're working. But in the after hours, if you see us,
Starting point is 00:12:38 just come party with Mario in his shoes because this is our night out in Hoptown. He doesn't have to get home like he usually does. Ryan's promised to tie one on tonight, Drew, so it should be fucked. I'm very looking forward to it. I haven't been to Western Kentucky in a while. I'm going to swing through Madisonville for a detour, and then Hopkinsville. I hadn't even hung out with you all after hours in a long time either. It's been, except for our trip to Pennsylvania, it's been a long time since we've had a night
Starting point is 00:13:03 like this, because this dude used to always drive home. Remember every time we'd go anywhere? Ryan was always saying, hey, me, and so he wouldn't stay. And so Shannon, like, we get a night together. Isn't it exciting? I'm looking forward to it. Yeah, it's going to be a good three and a half hour drive for all of us, but looking forward to getting there. And Billy, who always complains that he's never part of the group, decided to go on vacation this week. So it's only, so Billy, it's only on him. I do like the moment you're back, he said I'm out. I don't want to talk to him.
Starting point is 00:13:30 I don't want to go to any meetings. I don't want to do any shows with him. I'm getting the heck away from one week gone, and he was out. So last thing, and I'm not going to talk about any of the details on this, but I did. yesterday, Ryan get to meet Mark Pope. Yes. I had actually, I'd never met him. I mean, I think I met him when he played here,
Starting point is 00:13:53 but I had never met him. I sat down with him for a while yesterday, and it was a great conversation. He's going to come on here in a few weeks, and we're going to talk about some of the stuff we talked about. Because I kind of sat down and talked with him sort of about his view of the program, and like how he envisioned this going,
Starting point is 00:14:14 And it was really great. Good. I'm excited to be quite frank with you from a KSR perspective to have, I'm going to be honest with you, to have a positive relationship with the coach again. I mean, I think that's that when that was good with Cal, it made this thing better. And in the last two or three years, it made it harder. He couldn't. I'm not just saying this.
Starting point is 00:14:42 And those of you that have dealt with him as a fan, he, he, he could. couldn't have been nicer. Yeah. I'm surprised. He couldn't have been nicer. He actually joked with me and said, uh, thanks a lot for getting a louder ovation to me during the press conference. And I said, oh, I think yours was much louder.
Starting point is 00:14:58 But in listening to him talk, we were together for about an hour. And listening to him talk about his vision of how he wants this to go. I mean, at the end of it, I was like, well, do you need me to play? You know, like, like, he has that ability to kind of really get you excited about. And we've seen that how he's rallied the fan base. He's rallied the former players. He's got us all on board. We all feel like we got our team back, so to speak.
Starting point is 00:15:22 Did you feel that energy, though? We keep hearing about that. Everything is all about energy, energy, energy. He talks about the state of Kentucky like he grew up in Harlan County. And I mean, he's a New York kid who went to school in Washington. But he talks about Kentucky like he played in the 13th region. Like he's just got that sort of love of this place. And he talks, he wants, he doesn't just, this is what I love about him.
Starting point is 00:15:52 He doesn't just want to succeed. He wants to succeed at Kentucky. That's really important to him. He doesn't just want to, like a lot of coaches want to accomplish goals because we all have personal goals. He wants to accomplish goals at Kentucky. And I think that is, that is, I don't want to say, I'm not going to act like Cal didn't do that, but I think Cal would sort of take the view, I'm going to do this wherever I am,
Starting point is 00:16:16 and Kentucky's the best place to do it. He takes the view of, I want to do it here because it's here. And Ryan, I think that's exciting. And I think it takes a special person to understand that. What it means, what this basketball program means of the people of this state, and he gets it. He understands it.
Starting point is 00:16:32 Understands the assignment, he says often. Yeah, and so I just, I came away from that, very excited, but also as I was preparing for the meeting, you know, they're doing all that construction. there's like you know there's they're finishing they say they're going to play games in memorial coliseum in two weeks i'm going to throw the challenge flag on that we'll see if they do i'll be impressed maybe they will i don't know but so stuff is you can't get in the normal doors so i went in one of the side doors tried to get one of the side doors next to uh joe b hall uh lodge where the players
Starting point is 00:17:08 are and i kept trying to pull the doors they were all locked this dude comes over and goes hey uh my key may work. He's one of the construction guys. And the key doesn't work. And then he looks at me and he goes, here I'll walk you around. As we walk around, he goes, so what are you doing here? And I was like, I'm going to see Meet Mark Pope. And he goes, you guys going to get along? He was like, I hope so. So at that point, I knew it's not just me that wants to, Drew. I think everybody else would like it as too as well. Yeah. When you mentioned you were meeting Pope, I think my initial reaction is, oh, well, this is new. This is different. It's been a while since we've had the old meet with the coach. That was great. So I'm very excited about it. And if you, and you will hear that, I'm sure
Starting point is 00:17:47 you've seen it in press conferences, you'll see it more. The dude, like, it's infectious energy. It's different infectious energy. Like, you know, Cal was an infectious like, this dude is such a good salesman. This is more like, I just want to make this dude happy because he's so happy, right. He's excited to be. Cal was swag. That's right. Cow was like, cool. I want to be with the cool guy. Mark Pope is like, dude, this dude. It's fun. Let's just go get it. And I think it's different, but it certainly worked, at least, on me. 859-280, 2287.
Starting point is 00:18:20 We'll take a break, take your calls. This KSA. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo.

The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. Listen to deeply well with Debbie Brown from the Black Effect Podcast Network on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, I'm Jared Adano. You might know me as that loud guy who yells out, help on the internet.
Starting point is 00:20:58 Help! Somebody! Please! But there's so much more to me than me. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian. And recently, I've become quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast, Hope from a Hypocrite, I'll be changing lives.
Starting point is 00:21:12 Helping people in need with my... sage advice and thoughtful solutions. Sike, I'm a comedian. I'm not qualified to give good advice. Join me and my comedian friends as we riff, rant recommend some of the most legally dubious advice known to man. If I'm calling you, even if you're on your phone, let it ring twice.
Starting point is 00:21:33 One ring is too scary. Cream a chicken suit. Hey, cream. Cream a chicken suit. This is help from a hypocrite, the worst advice from the dumbest people you know. Listen to Help from Hippocrat as part of the My Cultura Podcast Network available on the IHart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, I'm Diana Maria Riva, actress, mother, lover, and a Gen X woman walking through life one hot flash and hormonal crying jag at a time.
Starting point is 00:22:01 You ladies know what I mean. I'll bet you a perimenopausal chin here you do. So let's talk about it. Join me on my new podcast. How Hard Can It Be with Deanna Maria Riva, where I call on my Gen X squads from Ohio to Hollywood as we navigate midlife's most fantastic. Yes. All of a sudden, I'd had hanginess happening on my own. I was like, what the hell is that?
Starting point is 00:22:22 I was married when I had her, so I didn't even consider how empty that nest was going to be. Mood swings, night sweats, fupas, sex drive. Wait, what sex? Dating at 45. How can it be getting naked at 50 with the new guy? That one's kind of hard, you know? Well, that's lighting. They say we can't polish a turd, but we're sure going to try.
Starting point is 00:22:41 So let's get blunt with laughs, tears, or tears of laughter. And dive into it, unfiltered and unbothered and ask, How Hard Can It Be? I cannot believe I'm about to say this out loud in public. Listen to How Hard Can It Be with Diana Maria Riva as part of My Cultura Podcast Network available on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This is going to be Mario tonight. Yes.
Starting point is 00:23:05 Annie, are you okay? Are you okay, Annie? He's got the shoes. Yes. You're going to do that? They were Shani. I'm glad your camera or whatnot when I did that right there. Is this the one where the shoes? He leaned, the lean.
Starting point is 00:23:18 Yeah, he leans in this. This is the lean video. 859, 280, 2287. A lot of people suggesting, Ryan, the mixer in Hopkinsville is our after-hours place. Sounds like the kind of place, you know, you mix. A lot of suggestions to go to Katie's. Kate is to some steakhouse there, but that's 20 minutes away. We can't.
Starting point is 00:23:40 It's hard enough, Channing, to go to Hopkinsville. Let's find something in Hopkins. big place there's going to be something in hopkinsville right that we can we can get the hopkinsville retreat not the trig county yeah we're not going to trade county i've seen the robert lee memorial like we're good one of our last trips to hopkinsville they had some big festival downtown we kind of just stumbled on to the oh well that was we didn't it was the eclipse it was the eclipse it was the eclipse for the eclipse oh it's special for the eclipse you didn't make that connection that the festival might have been for the eclipse i just remember we walked i mean the eclipse was the next
Starting point is 00:24:10 day and so like it felt like it probably coincided well we didn't didn't know it. We kind of walked out and there's all these rides. Did you guess it? Drew, did you guess? Maybe it was with the eclipse. I thought all the eclipse merchandise was a big tell. Big tell of what's going on. Yeah. I mean, it was. I still have a little PTSD from that drive. That's why Ron and I are driving together.
Starting point is 00:24:30 Yeah. Well, I don't think the traffic will be quite as bad. One person writes, Matt, is Mark Pope as tall in person as he seems? Yes. Yes. Yes. I mean, I'm tall, but he towers over. Like he's like, he's tall. It's interesting going in his office because that was Cal's office. And again, it's hard to talk about the changes without sounding like I'm ripping Cal. I'm really not. I'm just trying to tell you what's different.
Starting point is 00:25:02 When you used to go into Cal's office, and you know this, Drew, it was kind of an ode to Cal. Right? Like there was Memphis stuff up. There was UMass stuff. You mass stuff up. And I'm not criticizing this. That's, he was there, right? I mean, but he's got balls from famous wins.
Starting point is 00:25:20 There was a lot of Kentucky stuff up, right? There's that, that he, the biggest thing was like the Wall Patterson Cousins slam magazine poster, etc. Pope's office? All Kentucky stuff. Like all Kentucky stuff. It's just a different thing. It's not, it's, but I do think it's sort of symbolic to the way that they both.
Starting point is 00:25:43 both look at things, if that makes sense. Surprise he's even had time to get those things up at his office so good. Was it pretty filled out? Yeah, I mean, you could tell it was new, but it was Kentucky stuff and like his family. Like that's what that's what it was. So it's amazing what he's done since he's been here. Like we talked about, he went down to South America. He's been, he went to the Peach Jam.
Starting point is 00:26:04 He's gone to all these places. And yeah, oh, yeah, Turkey, have to move my family over. You know, got to buy a house, got to settle in, got to settle in my new office. And yet when you meet him, he probably seemed like he was. It seemed like he'd been there for years. It did. And it's just you just get the feeling of excitement that you get from him is just, it's contagious. I walked out of there going, okay, this can be fun.
Starting point is 00:26:24 Good. And that's what you, I think that's what he wants to impart to probably everybody, including recruits. Who's up next, Shannon? John. John, how are you, John? Doing good. Hey, a couple things. First, does Pope know why Calgary's a whiny ass and wouldn't talk to you?
Starting point is 00:26:43 And second of all, does, you know, we belong in the SEC or we are, you know, members of the SEC, and we have increased revenue, SEC and the Big Ten of over the other schools. How, how, and if it does, how does that create a competitive advantage for us? Well, it does. So that's a great question about revenue. So really starting this year, the Big Ten and the SEC are about to have a massive revenue advantage over everybody. So the Big Ten and SEC are essentially going to be making twice as much money a year off television as ACC big 12 schools are. So from a NIL, just from an everything perspective, the Big Ten in the SEC, 16 teams in the SEC, 18 in the Big Ten, you're talking 34 teams.
Starting point is 00:27:33 They are now tier one of athletics. And some teams are along for the ride like Vandy and Purdue. Now, isn't an advantage for Kentucky? Well, on the one hand, it's an advantage vis-a-vis like Louisville. Okay? We're going to have twice the revenue of Louisville. But I don't know that it's an advantage for Kentucky overall because the teams we play are going to have that exact same revenue advantage.
Starting point is 00:27:59 So you've basically, as somebody told me recently, you've essentially raised the minimum wage. Okay? So like in capitalism, when you raise the minimum wage, it certainly helps the lowest owner or the lowest paid workers. But it also, in some ways, the cost of everything goes up. So while it helps, and it does overall help, but it doesn't help as much as you would think
Starting point is 00:28:26 because the cost of goods goes up too as part of the minimum wage. I think the same thing is true here. We're raising the money, and I appreciate the call, But our opponents, Ryan, are also getting their money raised, so it doesn't necessarily help a ton. Yeah, Tennessee, Florida, Alabama. They're getting the same thing Kentucky's getting. There's no advantage there at all for our rival conference rivals. But it does help against Louisville.
Starting point is 00:28:52 It does help in basketball against the Ucons of the world and Carolina and Duke. I mean, honestly, look at our, if you think the five best basketball programs are Carolina, Duke, Kansas, and Kentucky, we're the only one that's about to see this revenue boost. They're all in conferences where they're not going to see it, so I do think it will help in that respect. Yeah, I certainly like widening the gap on Louisville and some of those other programs you name, but as Ryan noted, Tennessee and some of the others
Starting point is 00:29:20 you've got to compete with regularly every season in the SEC. They're getting that same bump as well. The ACC is the big loser in it. Because when the Big 12 signs their new media contract, they're going to get to do it with the new standards of the... The ACC starting in two years will make significantly less money than every other conference. And that's why Clemson and Florida State went out. Like the ACC signed a deal about a year or too early.
Starting point is 00:29:45 And they locked all their teams in by contract. And so they're going to end up with half the money of the other schools, and there's really nothing they can do about it. So the ACC, honestly, in the new television world, is kind of the big loser in the whole thing. We'll take a break. Be right back. SkiASR.

Starting point is 00:31:31 Hey, I'm Jared Adano. You might know me as that loud guy who yells out, help on the internet. Help! Somebody! Please! But there's so much more to me than me. I'm an actor.
Starting point is 00:31:42 I'm a comedian. And recently, I've become quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast, Hope from a Hypocrite, I'll be changing lives, helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions. Sike! I'm a comedian. I'm not qualified to give good advice.

Starting point is 00:33:31 What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm CJ Toledano, and our podcast, Point Game is about defining the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what.
Starting point is 00:33:43 He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows. Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective
Starting point is 00:33:54 on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series. because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Starting point is 00:34:15 Steve Nass would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He run up the court licking his fingers while he got the ball. After you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court. and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:34:36 T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here at KS. Bar and Grill. Shannon, I'm used to having, like, Trump people yell at me. But I like when it becomes liberal people. yelling at me too.
Starting point is 00:35:00 What are they yelling at? There are people writing about my minimum wage thing. I feel like I'm against raising the minimum wage. Just for the record, I'm for raising the minimum wage. It's too low considering what costs are. With that said, you also have to live in the real world to know, like, raising the minimum wage doesn't just make everything immediately better. Like, if somebody was making $10 and then they go to $17, that's awesome.
Starting point is 00:35:22 But if that happens for everybody, the price of stuff's going to go up. Now, the reason you raise the minimum wage is the price doesn't go up. as much as the wage increase. So it's ultimately good for poor people. But everything has a, like, economics doesn't change just because of what your heart believes. So, like, everything has a reaction, and people should, should know that. So Matt Jones is in favor of minimum wage increase. Yeah, it's too, it's too low considering the cost of, but honestly, most people don't, like,
Starting point is 00:35:53 because the job market, so many people have jobs, most people, they raise the price naturally. there's your economics. Thank you. There is judo, or no, Taekwondo on TV right now. What is the difference between judo, Shannon, and Taekwondo? It looks the same to me, but I, except they seem to wear a pad. So what's the difference? I like that you come to me for this, like I know the difference between karate,
Starting point is 00:36:17 judo, taekwondo. I have no idea. I don't think the Olympics has karate. They have judo and taekwondo, but they look to the naked eye, drew like the same thing, but I don't know, I'm sure there's a difference. What's the difference? I don't know the specific rules, but I think judo is a little lighter. It's this throwing.
Starting point is 00:36:40 Yeah, grappling, shufficians. I think Taekwondo may be a little more physical, maybe some hand-to. What is this? This is Taekwondo. It's kicks. They're kicks. Judo's like, you got to grab them and throw them. So you can't throw in this?
Starting point is 00:36:54 I don't think so. We need judo. That sounds a lot more entertaining. Who's the guy that was a guy who did judo law. Is that still working? I think so. I'm not sure. He didn't do Taekwondo law.
Starting point is 00:37:05 He was making people submit in the courtroom, not kicking them. And then there was that, you remember that show, Drew, the wonderful whites or whatever? One of the best documentaries ever made. He did the Judy Chop. Oh, Sue Bob. Yes. And then there's weightlifting is on TV. I think weightlifting might Ryan be the most boring sport to watch in the Olympics.
Starting point is 00:37:25 because you're just like, and then that's the whole thing. I don't think that's the most exciting thing. You got to hold it up there. You have to hold it for a couple seconds, right? What's it called lift, clean and jerk? Clean and jerk? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:39 And you got to hold it for like two or three seconds before they let you lay it down. I always feel like they're going to get hurt. Yeah. You know what I mean? Because if it goes wrong, your shoulder comes out of its socket. Does it?
Starting point is 00:37:49 Yeah. Well, that's not good. No. That's a big day for UK in the Olympics. So let's go through them. We got three guys playing in the semifinals in basketball. We got Bam, Anthony Davis, Devin Booker. We've got Sidney McLaughlin going for gold in the 400-meter hurdles
Starting point is 00:38:06 where maybe she'll break a sweat. Probably not. We've got the guy in the 200-meter. What's his name? I don't have it. I'll get it. I don't have it. All right.
Starting point is 00:38:19 It's somebody. And then we have somebody. It's a really complicated. He's with Zimbabwe. And then we have somebody in something else. Well, every Skinner's on right now. Brazil versus U.S. and volleyball. Brazil won two straight gold medals,
Starting point is 00:38:31 and then the Americans beat Brazil in the last Olympics for the golds. These are two Olympic powers, and she's been awesome for USA. It's one in the national championship here, yeah. There's a guy in the 110 meter hurdles, Daniel Roberts from Kentucky. And then they had a diver this morning really early move on to play or dive in tomorrow's final. So it has been a lot of Kentucky people. Julie Vincent's her name.
Starting point is 00:38:55 Kentucky, it feels like this is the Olympics with the most Kentucky people I can ever remember. That is true. It does seem like every sport has got a Kentucky and even breakdancing we talked about yesterday. Now, did you, two other Olympic things I wanted your take on. First of all, did you see the French woman
Starting point is 00:39:12 who was in the steeple chase? Did you see this? I didn't see it. She was in the steeple chase, and she came in fourth. Now, usually when you come in fourth, I think Shannon, fourth is the one. worse. Like you don't get anything.
Starting point is 00:39:25 Yeah, you don't get a medal for that. You just, you're in force. You get the aluminum metal. Yeah. So I think fourth would be a bummer, not this woman. She said a personal best. So she was like, I'm not worried about you all. I'm competing against myself.
Starting point is 00:39:38 I'm going to do me. This is the best steeple chase I've ever done. So she runs over to her boyfriend in the crowd and gets on one knee and ask him to marry. Oh. Now, but it is a woman. Is she proposed? She proposed?
Starting point is 00:39:53 She. proposed to him. So she got on one knee and proposed to him in front of millions of people in France, their home country. He said yes, so they're now engaged.
Starting point is 00:40:08 When she was asked about afterwards, she said, we've been dating for nine years. This was the best day of my life running the steeple chase, my personal record, in my home country. I felt like if it was going to happen, now is the time, which I kind of heard Shannon as, he's been waiting nine years. He ain't going to do it.
Starting point is 00:40:29 It's up to me to do it. Yeah. So what do you think of the woman asking the man to get to marriage? She put him on the spot. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I've been asked by a woman to marry another woman before. It was a little weird. What?
Starting point is 00:40:43 You've been asked. You've been asked by a woman to marry a different woman? No. I've been proposed to by a woman. Let me word that a little bit differently. So, yeah, I'm sure it was a little awkward for him. He's told us that. I've told that story several times on this show before.
Starting point is 00:40:58 And you said no. So it sounds like this woman has been steeple chasing that ring for a long time. It wasn't been a way to you over. Hey, would you say yes? Shannon, same thing with you. Would you all say yes to a woman if you were ready to marry her? Or would you say, like, I don't feel right. I mean, of the gender roles flipping.
Starting point is 00:41:18 I'll be okay with it. If I was ready, I think. think I would say, yeah, that's fine, yes. Put the ring on my finger. Let's go. I think I'd be okay with it, too. What about you? I would be okay with it.
Starting point is 00:41:29 I'm wondering, so did she have her own ring and then she gave it to him and he had to a friend handed it to her. No, she put it on him. She put the gate ring on him. She had told a friend. So when she ran over there, the friend handed her the ring and then she got on one knee and did it. And then she put the ring on him.
Starting point is 00:41:47 His finger. Yeah, I don't know how that works, to be honest with you. I guess, but that's what happened. Clearly didn't have one to give her. I don't know. I feel like I messed that up a little bit. I mean, I certainly wouldn't say no, but I would on the inside be like, I should have done this before.
Starting point is 00:42:01 I should have done this five years ago. Especially doing it at the Olympics with the world watching. I almost feel like he's getting called out. He was, no, he was getting called out. I would not want to be in his position. I mean, he clearly got called out. Now, the second thing, I love this. So a guy from the Philippines, he won, I don't remember,
Starting point is 00:42:20 remember what the sport was. But there was some sport he won a gold medal. The Philippines, no male had ever won a gold medal before, which is crazy because the Philippines is not a small country. It's like 150 million people, and they had never won a male gold medal before. So they're very happy. Yeah. So the government, and there's a lot of Asian governments that will pay you if you win a gold medal,
Starting point is 00:42:40 I don't know if you saw the story about the South Korean golfer. Did you see that? South Korean golfer's names like J.T. Pan. in South Korea, if you win a medal, you don't have to do mandatory military service. So in South Korea, you have to, if you're a male,
Starting point is 00:42:56 serving the military for three years, any male, unless you win a medal at the Olympics. And he came in fifth. He was in third with two holes to go and came in fifth, and he was crying because it was like, now I got to go to boot camp
Starting point is 00:43:10 because I didn't do that. But the Philippines never won a medal. So they gave their gold medal winner, a batch of prizes. Okay. Can I read you the prizes that the Philippines government gave their gold medal? He gave him a house worth $500,000. That's a pretty good get right there.
Starting point is 00:43:30 I would venture to say a $500,000 house in the Philippines, pretty nice house. I would say it is. I would mention that. They gave him $250,000 cash. Again, win-win. And then they gave him $50,000 worth of furniture to furnace the house. Yeah. So now for me, I feel like the government can stop break there.
Starting point is 00:43:50 I think so, too. I feel like the government has done a lot for me at that point. Yes, very happy. But guess what else they got? Free ramen noodles for the rest of his life. Wow. Okay. All right.
Starting point is 00:44:04 Like the one, 10-cent ones? No, I think he gets ramen noodles. They gave him free cookies from any restaurant of his choice for the rest of his life. Keeps getting better. So he can go into any restaurant and get a cookie and the government will pay for it. I don't know how that works. Now, these are the two I really like. At any Filipino restaurant in the Philippines, or at any restaurant in the Philippines that does a buffet,
Starting point is 00:44:34 he is allowed to have any buffet for free for the rest of his life. Whoa. Why doesn't it be a buffet? Just walk in and flashes the gold. Hey. No. The story said it had to be a buffet. buffet.
Starting point is 00:44:46 Yeah. So he has to go to like number one shot of buffet. He can't go have a regular restaurant. He has to eat a buffet. And then finally, beginning at age 40, he gets free colonoscopies for the rest of his life. Wow. Well, free buffet and free cookies, he's going to get fat. He's going to be buffets and cookies this whole life.
Starting point is 00:45:08 So you think the colonoscopy is for that? Maybe that's helping preventive measures. Speaking of which, Ryan, isn't it about? time for you again? No. I have my first one in a few weeks. Oh, you do? I've never had one. I've got, my first, my first one scheduled in like four weeks. My doctor was like, you're 45. 45. We're doing a remote? Hey, yeah, can we do it a live remote? That's what to be my question. We're not. We're not. I, uh, I made the executive decision. You're the one that does the colonoscopies on the radio. I'm the one that just does it sort of in peace and quies. What if
Starting point is 00:45:42 Shannon and I do a show and you two do a little side by side? We're not doing a couple's colon. You guys can hold hands. No, we're not. Ron can show you the ropes. It's not the bachelor. It's not the bachelor of colonoscopies. But I just think it's funny, Drew, that they would go,
Starting point is 00:46:01 you get a house, you get money, you get furniture. You know what? Ramen cookies and buffets, too. Just throw them in there. I'm wondering if all the restaurants agree to this, or they're just bleeding money because he keeps coming to eat at the buffet with his gold medal. There's the thing.
Starting point is 00:46:15 I mean, if he takes them up on that, he's not going to be coming back for the next Olympics. Oh, no, he's done. He's not going to be able to win. He's sporting a bit at all. Cornbreadthimp.com got back on the cornbreadbred this week and sleep has been the best. It's been in a while. Cornbreadthimp.com is full spectrum, flour-only hemp CBD gummies, the strongest formula they've
Starting point is 00:46:36 ever made. Yes. You say that like it's. We've got some. Yeah, they sent us some. You can tell. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:43 I didn't realize that. of stress helps with sleep. It's cornbread hemp.com. The code is KSR at checkout for 30% off. The World Cup is coming. Ramos sending on to Ernie Stewart the chip.
Starting point is 00:50:39 I'm Tad Ramos. I'm Tom Boke. On our podcast, inside American soccer, you'll get the real storylines. I'm not worried about Polisic. I'm not worried about Balligan. I'm not worried about McKinney. My only concern is what happens in the back. The biggest decisions.
Starting point is 00:50:56 If you're going to look at stats and numbers, he has no shot at making this World Cup team. And the truth about the U.S. national team. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals. The World Cup is almost here. Experience it all with us.
Starting point is 00:51:17 Listen, Inside American Soccer with Tom Bogart and Tabram. most on the iHeart radio app apple podcast wherever you get your podcast well done shannon 859280 27 i talked a lot right there let's go the phones who's next let's go to teddy teddy teddy how are you teddy teddy hello can hear me yes go ahead good um first time caller i'm listener who are what's up so i kind of have a random question so with fantasy football you can pick a perfect fantasy football team with Stoops players. In the Stoops era, it would it be.
Starting point is 00:52:00 So you got a quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers tied in. Is this going to be a fantasy football team in the Stoops era in the NFL or a fantasy college football team? Fantasy college teams. You're basically building the perfect Stoops team. So in the Stoops era with a college team, I'm not going to do stats. Let's just say who would you want on your team. All right.
Starting point is 00:52:18 So I would want, I appreciate the call. I would want Will Levis. Yeah. Right. It's a quarterback. I mean, you tell me I get two running backs. I'm going to take Chris Rodriguez and Benny Snell, right? Like, I mean, isn't that who you're going to take?
Starting point is 00:52:29 You know, Ray Davis set the touchdown record last year. That's an interesting question. Would you take him over one of those guys? He caught some passes. Catches go a long way in some fantasy. So you're taking one of them? Now, let's just say you're building a team to win. Do you want, do you want, if we're just trying to win games, I would have Rodriguez or Benny, but if we're. But if I get two, you take them both, right?
Starting point is 00:52:49 Yeah, but Ray's right there in the conversation. He didn't come to mind. All right. Tide in, who we take it? Wow. Two tight-in set. Who we got? I feel like every year we think
Starting point is 00:53:01 that's going to be a big tight-in year. Yeah. C.J. Conrad. And who? Because he's won. Josh Caddus, maybe for this coming year, maybe have a big year for him.
Starting point is 00:53:12 I think you'd probably take what, C.J. and Brendan Bates? Yeah. I feel like Bates was still kind of quiet, but was there anybody in the early Stoop's years that was a really good tight-in? None that I'm putting in the territory. Well, St. Brinanin Bates, if somebody else comes up with someone.
Starting point is 00:53:31 All right, wide receivers. Are we talking Lynn Bowden? Wan Dale. And who? Garrett Johnson is the most underrated Kentucky Wildcat of all time. Juice Johnson. He's high on the receiving list. I would throw him in that mix.
Starting point is 00:53:48 You got a lot of small guys there, though. You want one big dude? Ryan really wants to say Dane Key. But he knows he knows he can't yet. Josh Ali. maybe. Yeah. If you're just talking good, you're going to take Wondell Lynn, and I like your
Starting point is 00:54:01 Juice Johnson. That's a good answer. Okay. Who's the, let's just, who's the Stoops all offensive line? He's had some good centers. He's got, all right, so Logan Stimberg, uh, Drake, Jackson, Landon Young. Him on there. Who's the guy that played Dary and Kinnard played forever?
Starting point is 00:54:22 Oh, he was, yeah, all American. Yeah. Anybody else? Do we have anybody else during the Stoops era that was like unbelievable? they've been so steady as a group. They have been steady as a group. Oh, the dude that's Luke Fortner. Sorry, Luke Fortner's death of course.
Starting point is 00:54:38 Yeah, I mean, he's playing. Sorry, Luke. Luke's on it. So, all right, defense. Give me your four best defenders this dude. Josh Allen. Yes. Who just picked that, you know, you pick one defense.
Starting point is 00:54:50 It's going to be that year? What about all those secondary guys, right? Like Chris Westry, Mike Edwards, Mike Edwards. What was the, Lonnie Johnson? Lonnie Johnson. Dude, you could put together a national championship secondary. No, you could. Valentine's making plays in the league.
Starting point is 00:55:06 Yeah. What was the other guy? What was the other guy that played? He played the NFL team? Beatty. I mean, think about how many dudes we've had the NFL in the secondary under Mark Stoves. Even the dude that transferred in and who's he playing for the Cowboys? Boss man fat.
Starting point is 00:55:23 And then in linebackers, you forget about him because he was early, but Avery Williamson, Bud Dupree. Bud Dupree. If you go way back, Zadarius Smith on the defensive line. I mean, you have Deion Walker on this team. Dude, Zadarius Smith, Josh Allen and Dion Walker, stop it. Stop. With Bud also.
Starting point is 00:55:44 Bud DePri. Yeah. I mean, so you could put a good group up there. Who's next? Dennis. Dennis. Go ahead, Dennis. Josh Pascoe.
Starting point is 00:55:52 Another good one, yeah. Hey, by the way, good to have you back, Matt. KSR is not KSR without you on there. I may not agree with you on everything, but you're still the best on here. Thank you. No slight to the other folks. But anyway, you may not know the answer to this, but Freddie Magher, I love him on the Monday quarterback show with Tom Leach.
Starting point is 00:56:20 Is he going to be doing that this year? No. You know, Freddy's, well, he was here just a minute ago, dealing with some health issues and, he will not be on that show this year. Okay. And one last thing, this may be controversial, but I heard from a former, I heard from a kid that played for the UK last year on a football team.
Starting point is 00:56:48 His dad told me that Liam Cohen laughed because he could not call the plays that he wanted to call. Yeah, I think that's, so here's my view on that. I think there's, as with everything, I appreciate the call. As with everything, I think the truth is not what is said. I think Liam was able to call pretty much what he wanted with a couple of exceptions in random situations. And then I think when things didn't go great, that was an easy out, in my opinion. I think the first time Liam was here, I think Mark maybe had a little bit more control
Starting point is 00:57:28 over, I think the second time, there might have been a handful of situations that Mark said, let's run or whatever, like, which head coaches can do. But Liam ran, in my opinion, Ryan, if you disagree, you can tell me. But Liam, Liam, Liam ran the offense. I totally think he ran the offense.
Starting point is 00:57:47 And I don't know this to be a fact, but I think the disconnect was made between Liam and the quarterback. I think that's right. Not necessarily Liam and Stooped. It was Liam and the quarterback. And I, at least when he left, here. I think Liam and Stoop's had a very good relationship. Now, I don't know what happened
Starting point is 00:58:03 after that or if anything happened. Maybe nothing did. But I know that when Liam was considering leaving, I talked to both guys quite a bit during that, and I think they both had a great relationship. So I think I've heard that maybe some people who, when he got hired by the Bucks, and there were some people going, oh, this is this guys, this is what we want? Then there was kind of like, well, he didn't get to do what he wanted to do. I think he got to do what he wanted to do. It's just he and a quarterback didn't exactly line up. We will take a break. We're going to have a special guest with us when we return.
