A great crowd.
How about this?
The store is so full.
you can't even get in.
But we still like you to come out and join us.
Every time we come to Jefferson County,
which group of fans owns Jefferson County?
Is it not the Kentucky fan base?
Come on.
I mean, this is ridiculous.
We're not, when the season hasn't even started yet.
You can give us a shout at Clark's puppet shop phone line,
859-280-2287.

T.J. He'll make them pay.
Big day on the show today.
All right, first of all, we're at Shady Rays.
where you have all kinds of deals, great prices,
selection, Shannon's wearing sunglasses.
Number two, Malachi Moreno, the top 50 recruit from Kentucky, from Scott County.
He will decide at 1130.
I thought it was 11, but I think it's at 1130, right?
That's correct.
So we will not have it live because, well, we're here.
But we will keep you up to date.
I'm going to sign you, Ryan.
you have the find out the moment he makes his selection.
Do you know how you're going to pull that off?
Is Zach going to be there?
Zach or Jack?
We'll have a whole crew there, but you're your job.
And then you will break into the show and say what he's done.
I do it a wanting none of.
But you have to beat, like, you need to beat social media.
We need to announce it.
So like, we need to announce that the moment it happens.
So I'm trusting you on this at 1130.
He's down to Kentucky and Indiana.
I mean, we can't have him going to the Hoosiers.
he'll decide this afternoon.
Or morning, are you ready?
I'm ready.
Yeah, I'll send some feelers out there.
Okay, all right.
So there's a lot of stuff to talk about.
Everybody got here.
I don't know what's happening in Simpsonville,
but that road shannon was closed last night for like an hour.
Well, luckily, I didn't have to do that because I'm living there.
I can't take you seriously with the sunglasses.
Like yours.
The top gun.
Yeah, I mean, like you look what?
Okay, well, we'll talk about it.
Well, I have to think.
But you, your sunglasses are like a little.
I'm just modeling the product.
Okay, all right.
Looks good.
Yeah, thank you.
It's good.
Okay, so let me give you a couple of little bit of news items.
First of all, if you've listened to the last couple weeks, I've talked to you about how, you know, NIL,
we've got to figure out what's going to happen within it.
Well, they've made two big announcements on NIL.
The first one we talked about yesterday, which was they are releasing.
The name of it is Kentucky Blue Light.
Kentucky Blue Light is a beer from gravely brewing here in Louisville that all the proceeds from will go to Kentucky NIL.
So it is literally like it's basically when you buy one of the beers, you will be funding for NIL.
I think it's a real, I mean, some other schools have already done this, but I think it's a great idea.
Because part of the difficulty about NIL is people go, well, what do I get out of it?
Right.
So for the beer part, if you're a beer drinker, you're going to get it anyway, and then you get it.
Now, they are going to release it.
It's going to be released Monday.
A couple questions I've gotten asked.
It will not be at the games.
So it will not be at the games.
I think they probably want that eventually, but I just don't think it got done in time to be at the games this year.
I think it's going to be in like Kroger and that kind of stuff, but then it'll also be in some bars.
we are actually debuting it on Monday.
And next week, if you go to KS Bar anytime between Monday and Sunday,
you have to be inside, they are giving, as part of the NIL thing,
they are giving beer for a year to one person from Monday to Sunday.
Whoa.
Beer for a year.
I heard a lot of people I get excited when you said that.
Everybody started.
So from Monday to Sunday, as we're debuting it, if you come in,
beer for a year will have a little sign-up thing and that works i think it's absolutely brilliant
i mean especially even rhymes like like beer for a year yeah and you think about like okay you're
not selling it in the stadium but everybody outside tellgating it's going to be drinking that beer
everybody that's sitting at home watching the game is going to be drinking that beer it's a great
idea they're going to bring some of it in here i think in a little bit for drew to te to drew to try i'll
sample so that he can he can sample it but uh but but either way i think this is a really
great idea for the program. It's, Drew, the kind of creative stuff that I've really wanted them to do.
A lot of other schools have jumped on that a little earlier than we did, but we're jumping on it now.
And I actually think it will be a really great way to try to continue to raise the money.
Absolutely. These are the creative things you have to do in the NIL world. Not everybody's just going to sit down and write a check just to help out, not get much in return.
But if you're telling fans, you can have a cold beard. A little bit of that will go help the NIL.
fundraising, I think is a great idea, and I think it's going to be a huge success.
I think it's going to be a huge success.
Even just having the can is like a cool thing to.
Yeah, because it says Kentucky blue light.
So that starts, so I'm glad to hear that.
Now, the second thing, and by the way, the NIL money for that will go to all of Kentucky's in aisles, not just basketball.
But then, this just got announced this morning.
This year, the blue white game is going to be in Memorial Coliseum, and the money will all go to NIL.
So rather than the money going to the UK, these are the kind of compromises schools are about to have to make,
which is used to be everything a school would do, the profit would go to the school,
which they would then use for the athletic budget, coaches, etc.
Schools are going to have to start making these kind of compromises, which is basically like,
because the schools cannot directly solicit money to NIL,
but they can kind of, Ryan, secondarily solicit.
So they basically can take the blue white game and give it to Club Blue and say,
this is yours to go make money for it.
And they've made the decision to put it in Memorial Coliseum.
Both the men and the women's team will play, but it'll be games,
and it'll be 6,000 people, which is what that event has needed as an atmosphere for a while,
because it never would fill up Rupp Arena and it would kind of feel dead.
They included it as part of the season ticket package.
A lot of times people don't even want to go.
And so it would be, this will get, I think, a crowd, Ryan, that will be very into it.
And then, you know, depending on what they put as the ticket prices and all that, I mean, it could raise over a million dollars in revenue for NIO.
Well, Drew said you've got to start being creative in the NIA world.
The beer and now this whole big blue white game is brilliant.
And a lot of guys maybe don't want to donate to Big Blue.
the Club Blue every month, but yet they want to go to the game.
They said, hey, let's support them this way.
Let's go to the Blue White game and support Pope's first debut as a coach and help support Club Blue.
Yeah, I think he, I think it's going to be awesome.
I also just put aside the NIL part.
It's just going to be fun to watch them in Memorial Coliseum.
I mean, I've wanted them.
People want them to do regular games in Memorial Coliseum.
Honestly, that's probably just never going to happen.
But I used to say, well, let's put Big Blue Madness in there.
Okay, well, if you're not going to do that, I do think, Shannon,
the blue-white game there will give it some energy again in a way that really it has not had in a long, long time.
So I like that idea a lot.
I think you're going to get the most hardcore fans packed into one spot, right?
Not to say if you put it in Rupp Arena, you're not going to have hardcore fans,
but it is like the fan base that's wanting it the most that's going to be loud, it's going to be energetic.
You know, that's something we've talked about at Rupp Arena, the lack of energy sometimes in Ruff.
You put it in Memorial, it's going to be crazy.
No, it'll be great.
Now, this is very good news to me, both of these, because my issue, we have two NIL issues, at least as I see it.
Number one is one that we're going to have a very hard time fixing, which is we just don't have a ton of really big money donors.
You know, you can go back through history and sort of see how this developed.
Part of it is we don't have a zillion wealthy Kentucky alumni.
But the bigger issue is when we got in trouble kind of in the in the in the 90s and Ryan you were around for this a lot of it was because of boosters out of control and UK made a concerted effort to kind of push them away.
Yep.
Is that fair to say?
Very fair to say.
Hey guys in the back.
Just keep it down to a dull roar back there.
All right.
They were they kind of pushed them away.
And because they pushed them away, then.
And it worked.
And Cal was not a big booster guy, right?
He was just kind of like, I'm going to do my thing.
But now they need them, and we don't have a whole lot cultivated.
And then the second issue is, for me, was, is Kentucky going to be creative?
You remember Mitch used to say, we're going to go slowly on this.
Yeah, right?
He's more of a reactor than being the first one out there.
And so I was worried, are we going to be behind on everything?
I'm glad to see this stuff.
I heard a story about Louisville, and I don't know if this is true.
So let me be clear.
This may not be true, but it's the kind of thing teams are going to have to do.
I heard a story about how U of L had a guy who bought season tickets like three or four years ago,
and as part of it agreed to give a 10-year donation to their equivalent of the K-fund, whatever that is.
And it was so much a year for how many years.
And then he's got like six or seven years to go.
They called him and said, I'll tell you what, rather than giving that money the K-fund,
will you donate that much to NIL every year and it'll count?
Okay, that's the kind of thing that a school is trying, that's a creative thing.
I got to make sure I want to see Drew Kentucky do things like that, and these are examples of them doing that.
Yeah, and we obviously know what this fan base can do.
So if you're going to have events like Blue White in the new memorial, putting the teams together,
you're going to have a UK branded beer, or Club Blue branded beer, anything like that,
I think you can make up and cover some ground where you don't have as many of the big donors as some of the other schools.
Because we know this fan base, they'll do what they can.
and if they're getting something to return, they'll be very passionate about it.
Now, the last piece of news is we all kind of had given up on Jasper Johnson,
who is the highest ranked player from Kentucky, and who is a top, depending on where you look,
top 20 to 25 player around the country.
Everybody had basically said he's down to Carolina and Bama.
Now, I think it's almost certain it's Bama and Kentucky.
and when this is over, if we get them, I'll tell you what happened.
But everything changed in one night.
I mean, I think Kentucky went from out to in.
I'm going to pick them right now.
Now, I'll reserve my right to change.
He's going to decide, like, I think on my birthday, right?
He pushed it back another week.
It's the end of August now.
I think he's decided on August 28th, which is my birthday.
I think he's deciding that day.
I think it could still be Alabama, but I would put my money on Kentucky now.
But again, back to the creativity thing.
I think they actually, in a night, kind of flip the recruitment rind,
and now they have a chance at Kentucky's top kit.
And I think Malachi-Mrino today is no accident.
I think that if they get Malacom Rino today that it helps persuade Jasper Johnson.
Are they friends?
They're close enough.
You know, they're not maybe...
What does that mean?
Close enough.
I don't go to the same school.
They don't play in the summer team, but yet they're friendly enough that they're...
It's like...
Isn't that when...
Like, didn't Obama say to Hillary during a primary, you're likable enough?
I feel like...
I think he did.
I think they're in a primary, and he said, you're likable enough, Hillary.
I feel like friendly enough is like a little bit like that.
Yeah, but I am a believer that this is no accident.
that Malachi would jump his decision before Jasper,
because I think that'll help maybe influence Jasper
and then they also pick Kentucky.
Adding to Ryan's point, it's not just their connection.
If Marino picks the cats today,
Jasper will see that reaction and the importance.
I'm sure there's going to be a lot of people at Great Crossings today.
That will even put a little more pressure on Jasper Johnson
to be like, look how much you're beloved here if you stay home.
If just two weeks before his decision,
he sees another five-star player going through it and hopefully picking the cats.
So I think it's Kentucky or Alabama for the kids.
kid now. You know, I mean, things can change. They change this week. But if you had come, I mean,
I wasn't negative necessarily about Kentucky basketball NIL early in the week, but I don't know that
I was like overjoyed. It was kind of going, you know, we got to make sure we kind of keep up. I feel
so much better at the end of the week with the combination, because I didn't even know about the beer
until like Tuesday, the combination of the beer, the decision to make the blue white game part of this,
and then kind of some movement on the Jasper Johnson.
All of a sudden, what I was worried is, is UK basketball going to be UK basketball doing NIL?
I actually think that's going to happen now.
And, you know, football, to be fair to them, has already been ahead of the curve a little bit, again, because of Mark Stoops.
So now I'm glad to see basketball will be heading in that direction, too.
859-28027.
We are here at Shady Ray's coming out.

Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here live at Shady Race.
859-2807 I want to give a couple of things here real quick because some things people are saying to me now don't want you to think I'm ignoring you
so a lot of you that listen on podcast have noted like they've added a lot of commercials to the podcast and they're getting mad at me as if I physically insert those commercials
actually I do actually you don't anymore I don't know if you've seen the new system so now
So long story short, our success has both been used for us and against us.
So because of it, we're now in the national podcast thing.
And so Shannon puts in the breaks and they just like random podcasts go in.
And like wherever you are in the country, it'll correspond to it.
And they, in my opinion, maybe they've put in too many.
We're working on it.
Okay.
So like just so you know, hopefully it won't be.
I mean, there's going to be ads, but hopefully it won't be.
Because some people have said that and I kind of agree with you.
you like they're making it's out of our hands now but hopefully we can we can change it a little bit
because it went from like 30 seconds or one minute to like full ads so hopefully we will be able
I mean you're going to have ads but hopefully it won't be like it was yeah we can't control
that but if you do want to complain Shannon certainly loves podcasts yeah I mean it's fault concerns
I did like when the podcast was late on Monday Shannon was on vacation yeah I saw we're still
writing yeah we could have used you on unpopular opinion day we need a little more speed on the
on the board 600 miles away what do you want me to do
about it. A number of people
wanted that story, so I'll just tell you real
quick. So what's the name of the Smashing Pumpkins
League senior? Billy Corgan. So
Billy Corgan also owns
a wrestling company, right?
He owns, see, we have a lot
in common. He owns NWA.
And we were talking about doing some stuff
this past summer, right
before I went to Europe, and I was at my friend
Tall's house, and the phone rings, he was
going to call me, and the phone rings
and it pops up on my phone,
and it just says, smashing pumpkins.
in big letters.
And I was like,
this dude has his phone programmed in
as when he calls
smashing pumpkins comes in.
So before I answered,
I screenshotted it.
Because I wanted to have
the screenshot of the smashing pumpkins,
Ryan, giving me a call.
I would do the same thing.
Why not?
It doesn't happen every day.
He's somebody like that's going to call you.
Like a band phone or something?
I don't know.
It was his part.
It was him,
but it was a smashing pumpkin's phone.
One person writes, Matt,
If we get Jasper Johnson and Malachi Moreno,
do you still think we can get top guys
because I would assume Pope would want mostly portal guys?
Well, I do think if they get these two guys,
we'll only add Drew a couple more guys
because I do think Pope's always going to be heavy in the portal.
You also got to remember some of these guys we have have more eligibility.
I don't think we need to assume like we did with Cal
that everybody leaves every year.
I think you're going to have guys who stay longer.
There's at least six or seven guys on this team
that have an extra year eligibility.
So my assumption is this is going to be different.
You know, we always looked at Cal's teams as it's a new team every year.
I'm not sure that will be totally the case here.
Yeah, Cal was great at going up and loading up on high school guys,
but I think Pope's going to prioritize people on his own team
and then take three or four out of the, to join a freshman class.
Wanted to watch is Braylon Mullins from Indiana.
We're talking about connections.
He actually played with Malachi Marino.
We really want that guy.
He's perfect for Pope's system.
It's still in a guy from Indiana.
and as I say, he and Marino are close.
I think today can go a long way with adding him.
He's someone that can play with Jasper Johnson.
So that's a name I'd watch as a potential third in there with our two homegrown talents.
But we also, we all, you're probably going to hear us say this 100 times.
We're all going to have to readjust our notion of what a recruiting class means
because we are not going to recruit like we did with Cal.
We're just not going to go get five of the top 20 guys.
It's just not going to happen.
Like that's just not going to happen.
And so a good class is probably going to be.
different than what it meant when Cal was here, and we just have to kind of keep that in mind.
Let's talk football for just a second. Preseason All-American came out yesterday. Kentucky pretty
well represent. Dionne Walker, first team preseason All-American. He's almost unanimous.
There's still one yet to come out, but I think he's been picked on all of them.
That's amazing. To get a defensive tackle, when you look at the Georgia's and the Alabama's,
and the defensive tackle is from Kentucky, that's a pretty amazing thing. In a couple of the
preseason all Americans, Barry and Brown is listed as a kick returner.
He's not on all of them, but he's on some of them.
So he is listed at least third team, I think, on all of them.
Maxwell Harrison makes a couple second and third team preseason all Americans.
And all of that is awesome.
I mean, that's three guys we have who may be some sort of preseason all American.
But let me ask you a question.
Two years ago, there was a dude from Georgia named, what's his name?
Johnson.
The transit.
Dumas Johnson.
Dumas Johnson.
He didn't have his great a year last year.
But he started and was like third on the team in tackles for a national championship Georgia team.
I don't see him rated anywhere.
He was actually an All-American at Georgia.
He just got injured and kind of slipped down their depth chart.
So he's even got that on his resume.
He's a former All-American from Georgia.
Is he the dude, Ryan, that maybe we're forgetting a little bit?
When Alyssa Languons on with us this summer, that's the one guy she highlighted.
It wasn't Maxwell Harrison.
It wasn't Dionne Walker.
It was Dumas Pop Johnson.
She called him Pop Johnson.
So his name is Dumas Pop.
They call him Pop.
Pop's his nickname.
His last name is another hyphen.
We like the hyphins.
Dumas Johnson.
Jamans is real first name, but he goes by Pop.
Okay.
But that's a guy, you know, we talk about Brock Vandergrief was at Georgia.
We're glad to have him without experience.
Dumas Johnson played on those national championship teams in a huge role.
Yeah.
I mean, he was a key part of that defense until he suffered an injury.
And then a younger guy came up and played well, and they just decided to leave the younger guy in.
And that's how we ended up with them.
But that's not some project for waiting to see what happened.
That's a guy that's played real football for a national championship.
So what have you heard about him, right, when you're at your pool parties with all the players running around?
That Derek Jackson and now Dumas Johnson are animals.
Like they are studs.
Yeah, we don't mention Derek Jackson enough, too.
He's right there in that linebacker group.
Weaver back for a six year that was unexpected.
That front seven is loaded.
Studs.
We're going to be really, really good on defense.
I mean, the offense, you've got to hope it works out, but the defense,
I think has a chance to be absolutely great.

Who's up first?
Canaan is up first.
Canaan.
Go ahead, Canaan.
Oh, hello, guys, first-time caller.
Who are?
What's up?
So I'm having a bit of an internal crisis here,
and I was wondering if you guys could help me out.
Well, what's the crisis?
So lifelong, I've always been a die-hard,
like, bleed-blue Kentucky basketball fan.
However, on the football side of things, I am a diehard Ohio State Buckeye fan.
First of all, that's illegal.
Yeah, what are we doing?
And that's my question.
Yeah, that's illegal because where are you from?
Can you mind me asking?
Cincinnati.
Okay, so Cincinnati.
So how did you end up a Kentucky fan?
Yeah, so my grandfather is, no, no, no, no, my grandfather, my grandfather, my grandfather,
my grandfather is from Brethick County.
Okay.
And I've lived in Ohio my entire life, and my dad kind of just took up Ohio State football.
And so it's just kind of been part of my family.
And I'm going to allow you to do it.
Brethren County helps him.
Well, because if you said to me, how can you beat Kentucky and Ohio State?
My answer would have been, you better live in Cincinnati.
That's what I was going to say, is you better live in Cincinnati, which you do.
Do you cheer for Kentucky football?
Yes.
All right.
That was a hesitation.
Pick one or the other, bro.
No, I don't mind you cheering for both because we're not really rivals,
but you can't bandwagon and only cheer for Kentucky basketball and Ohio State Football.
You need to cheer for Kentucky football and Ohio State basketball.
You got to cheer for the struggling ones, too.
Oh, for sure, definitely.
Yes.
All right.
Thank you, guys.
Thank you, man.

Great crowd here of Kentucky fans.
Two weeks away.
We are two weeks away from the opening kickoff
the UK football season,
but there will be football games in six days.
Week zero.
There's games, I think, next Thursday,
a game from Ireland as well,
a week from Saturday.
One person writes, Matt,
your caller said he was from Cincinnati
and Brethick County.
Did J.D. Vance just call you.
Maybe right.
Like, that's his, that's him, too.
Maybe that was him.
Just take a little break from the vice presidential trail
and coming on.
Another person writes, Matt, tell Shannon to shut up.
He literally said you got to pick one or the other bro,
and he cheers for Vandy and Kentucky.
Yeah, I get to do that.
That caller doesn't get to you.
There's rules for everybody.
But Kentucky and Vandy are at least arguably rivals.
Yeah, on the schedule every year.
Yeah, yeah, but Vandy sucks.
I mean, it's a sympathy-like, you know what I mean?
I wanted to wait for you, two, both of you to be here,
to see what you think about the new Major League Baseball rule
they're thinking about starting pitching.
Did you see this?
I don't know if I've seen this.
So they're considering that they would phase this in over like four years.
So they're going to decide in the offseason,
but it wouldn't come in immediately.
It would start over time.
But it would basically be every starting pitcher in a major league baseball game
would have to pitch at least six innings unless they gave up five or more runs
than you could take them out.
So they don't just have to sit there and get shelled.
But basically to kind of end the,
the practice of bullpen games, the idea would be every starter has to go six innings.
And the reason they would take it over four years is the other, they want to accomplish two things.
One is to make starting pitching a bigger thing.
But second, they want guys to not throw their arms out.
Basically, they feel like there's been too many injuries, and they want to over time get pitchers to learn,
I'm going to have to pitch for six innings so I can't throw 105 miles an hour at the start.
And that's why it would take over years.
They'd start in the minors, and basically the next generation of pitchers would have to learn how to pitch long rather than just throwing as fast as they can every single time.
Do you like that idea?
I like it.
I'll go first.
I like it because you're right.
People don't know how Bob Gibson and Nolan Ryan these guys used to throw all these pitches, all these innings.
It's because they didn't have to come out and throw 100 miles an hour in two innings and just wear their arms out.
They took better care of their arms.
So as far as that goes, for the health of it, I like it for the pitchers.
What do you think?
I don't like it at all.
I really don't.
I mean, they don't have to come out and throw 100 miles an hour.
If they don't want to, they could still take that approach and still be able to make it to 60s without being required to do it.
Well, but the theory, what baseball would say is right now it's a smart thing to do.
Take your starter out there, throw four or five as hard as they can.
Then take a man, put a bullpen throw as hard as they can, and offense is way down.
And so part of it would be this would help offense go up.
So the ERAs would probably go up, hitting would go up.
But also, you would take away the incentive that pitchers have now to just throw as hard as they can if they knew they had to work for a long time.
Don't we like seeing those 100-mile-hour pitches, though?
We do, but I think I've watched more baseball in the last couple years than I ever have.
You know, they don't get as many hits.
I mean, the reality is the batting average is the lowest it's been in like 20 years.
And I think so I think that's part of what they're thinking.
I like it.
And I'll go one step farther.
Too bad if you get up five.
You're standing for six.
You're giving up 12.
That's life.
You're having a rough game.
That's on you.
So you say they have to stay in no matter what.
It could be 14 to 1.
You're riding it out.
What if they're hurt?
Because I like the one on, well, injuries, you know, that might be hard to throw it underhand.
So injuries, I guess, we'll have to figure that.
But I like the head-to-head with pitchers.
Like you go in no matter what, these two are playing six inches.
This is ruining the game.
A guy could come out and just be completely off.
Now, this wouldn't happen.
But let's just say, in theory, play along.
A guy comes out, cannot find the strike zone.
It has 12 walks.
You've got to stay in the game.
Has to.
Come on, man.
That's not good.
I mean, in basketball, the shooter's cold.
They just keep shooting, you know, it's part of the game.
You had it off night.
Well, I mean, they do have a, when they give up a certain amount of runs, you can take them out.
Like, so there is a, I think it may as either four or five.
And then if they throw, I think, over 100 pitches, you can take them.
I mean, there are exceptions.
Yeah.
But they don't want to have what, like, the Reds do sometimes where they just pitch a guy for an inning.
And then they pitch another guy for an inning.
They don't want to do that.
Red just did that against the Cardinal.
They did.
And it worked.
And now it's become this thing where in the first inning, you pitch one of your best
relievers because he's going against the top of the lineup,
throw him as hard as you can, take him out and then bring your starter in the second
end.
See, which they don't want that to happen.
They're kind of like, we don't want to have this situation where the guy that's
pitching the majority of the game doesn't come into the second or third in.
I just think you're taking a lot of strategy out of the game when you do this,
and baseball is all about strategy.
It's a chess match.
Well, I will say this.
I mean, we all were skeptical about the pitch clock.
I think it made it better, okay?
I was skeptical about getting rid of the ship.
I think it made it better.
So I think it's at least worth considering it.
I'd never thought of it as something that you would want to do,
but I do think it's interesting.
859-280-2287.
Sex Machine 7-7-2-7-4-5-254.
One person writes, Matt,
why am I getting so nervous about the South Carolina football game?
They're no good, but I feel like the season ends if we lose.
I don't know if the season ends,
but it will be very deflating to an exciting fan base.
There's no doubt about that.
That's one of the most important home games in a long time.
I'm still, I don't want to get carried away and do any KSR cursing.
I just think they're not very good this year.
With how loaded and experienced Kentucky's defenses,
South Carolina is rolling out a quarterback that has like four pass attempts.
He's a red shirt freshman.
And we're getting early in the year.
First away game.
I think Kentucky should be in good shape even with Chip Trainham's injury
because what we've said about how loaded this defense is
and how much football they've already played.
I mean, if you think about it the last few years,
I mean, one of the criticisms of Kentucky's been,
well, they win four or five games in a row and then they'll win.
But what does happen, Ryan, is our fan base stays locked in all year, right?
Because we win the first four or five games, etc.
I do worry if they were to lose that first game.
Now, if you win that first game, you play Georgia the next week, even if you lose, people will be fine.
Then you're going to play Ohio, you'll win that.
Then you play Old Miss on the road.
That's going to be a top five or six team on the road, and then you get a buy.
So you still will have be engaged.
But if you were to lose to South Carolina and then lose to Georgia and then lose to Old
miss and go into the buy two and three, I do think it will be harder because that's when
Pope's basketball will start. It'll be harder to keep this fan base engaged if they were to
lose that South Carolina game. That's all we've been saying it since the schedule came out. That
South Carolina game is the most important game of the season. For what you said, and for perception
purposes, you can't South Carolina beat you three years in a row when you used to own South Carolina.
And Phil still always does this thing. I mean, we make fun of him, but he does one thing that's
interesting. He takes every team
and he creates what they call their swing
game. Right? So like in
the presidential race, Pennsylvania is the swing
state. Whoever wins that usually wins.
He picks the game on your schedule
that basically defines
whether or not you're going to have a good year.
If you win it, it'll be your good year.
If you lose it, it won't.
For Kentucky, he has
South Carolina as like, you better already
have won it. Our swing game
to him is Florida on the road.
If you win it, you'll have
good year. If you lose it, it'll be
disappointing. But he's already putting
South Carolina as a, you better
win that game on his thing.
I agree with him. And you gave the kind of a worst
case scenario. What if you beat South
Carolina, we'll call Georgia loss,
but you steal that one at Ole Miss, but you're
not impossible, and you're going into the by week at
4 and 1, having only lost to Georgia.
I mean, that is a, that's set you up
for a special year. Yeah, let's set that up.
You beat South Carolina, you lose to
Georgia, beat Ohio, beat Ole Miss. You go in the
by week, 4 and 1. You still have.
after that.
You still have on the back, and you immediately come back with Vandy, and now you're at five,
and you still have games Auburn at home, which you can win, Florida on the road, which you can win.
Like, you still have Louisville at home, and all of a sudden you've got a schedule where you go,
oh, wait a minute, Ryan, we can do something.
Yeah, South Carolina's most important game.
I agree with you.
That game at Florida is maybe the second most important, because that's a winnable game.
You still won on the road.
Your other road games are tough, but you get that one.
Yeah, now you set yourself up for something special.
I mean, our road games, we got, Drew and I, and Fade this, went through all the schedules in the SEC.
Our road game list is about as tough as in.
I mean, we probably have the toughest road game list of, I mean, going to Texas,
Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Florida, there aren't too many teams that have a harder set of four road games than we do.
Who's next?
Dan is up next.
Dan, go ahead, Dan.
Hey, guys, I want to go back real quick to yesterday.
where you started the show with people kind of losing their minds,
which you saying the expectation for Kentucky fans should be somewhere between six
and eight wins.
I don't necessarily agree with,
or disagree with you on that.
I do think that that's the most likely scenario going into each year.
I guess to give the opposing view of where you might lose some people on that would
be when you state that where Kentucky is right now is the best we will ever be.
I mean, but again,
I don't see that as a negative, okay, because I think where we are is amazing.
But give me something besides hope and like you can do anything, young man,
that makes you believe we can be as a program significantly better than we've been recently.
Well, I mean, I don't necessarily think that that's our expectation for every year.
But give me an example, though.
You got to give me something besides we can do it.
What is a rational reason we can do it?
Well, just the fact that, I mean, to me, if you're saying it that way, man,
if I can see that to you, then to me personally, there's really no point in playing the games.
No, there is.
I mean, no, but you because you get you fine.
Let me, let's say you're a fan of Eastern Kentucky basketball.
Okay, you're a season ticket holder of Eastern Kentucky.
Now, look, Kentucky basketball is a lot better than Eastern Kentucky basketball.
Don't get me wrong.
But let's put a different one.
Let's say you're a fan of Old Miss basketball.
Do you expect to win the national championship ever if you're an Old Miss basketball fan?
Well, there's the difference.
I wasn't going to bring up basketball because I thought you would make the point.
But I mean, just ask, again, answer my question,
do you, would you, as an Old Miss basketball fan, ever expect to win the national championship?
Well, with the way basketball set up and there being a tournament where you get hot,
then that is something that's possible.
But the way you say that Kentucky football will never be able to do that.
I mean, everything is possible in the eyes of the Lord.
But what I'm saying is, objectively, Old Miss has probably been to the Elite 8 once.
So if you're an Old Miss basketball fan, you probably sit there and go, let's be real.
We're never going to win a national championship.
But you still get joy out of the games.
You still go have fun.
You still want them to be as good as they possibly can be.
You still get moments like Stevie got loose, beaten LSU when they're number one,
winning the Citrus Bowl against P.
You still get these moments that are great.
If you sit there and say, we as a program are not successful until we win the SEC
championship, you are just asking to be miserable for the next 80 years.
Yeah, I mean, I agree.
Like I said, I do agree that the most logical expectation to have is somewhere in that
and maybe you get a 10-win season.
But I do think it's a little dangerous, just a little bit, to say that where that is,
that line, that 10-win every now and then is the best you can ever be.
just to me that just such a feeling that you can't break through ever well i mean i appreciate the
that's what i believe i mean do i think they can make ryan one year where they win or not 10 games
well we've won nine so clearly we can do that do i think there's a year where we could win 10
make the playoffs maybe upset a team or two yes in general if we win seven or eight i'm gonna be
happy. And I think people who say, it's time for us to take the next step, I just don't know
how you can think that when we do not have, and I don't know that we will ever have, the systematic
stuff around to make that happen. If we weren't in the SEC, it's a different conversation.
If we were in the ACC like Louisville, yes, you could win 10. But they won, what, 10 last year,
and they stunk. But it's different when you're in the SEC. That's the nature of the beast. You play that
SEC schedule. It's never going to get any easier. SEC football, you're
just going to get better and better.
And that's your schedule every single year.
You're a Vandy fan.
When Vandy plays football, and you know they're never, they're barely have a winning season.
I'm just there for the beer and the hot dogs.
We're not like that.
My view is that season Missouri had last year, our goal should be, let's be like Missouri
was last year about once every four years.
To me, that would be great.
As we learned yesterday on FAAD this, everyone go listen to it,
There can be a season where the schedule is a gift.
Missouri schedule this year.
If we had that, yes, we're talking about a 10-win season.
But Kentucky's a lot more difficult, and it's just going to be varying what the SEC puts in front of you each season.
Go look at Missouri schedule this year.
If we had a really good team and we got Missouri, like look at Missouri schedule this year.
We could win nine or 10 games with Missouri schedule.
I'd be disappointed.
But we don't play Missouri schedule.
We play our schedule.
And they just brought some of this Kentucky blue light beer.
in here. You know, I was just saying I'm just here for the beer
and the hot dogs. Where's the hot dogs? I'll tell you what.
We'll take a break. They're going to taste it during the break
and we'll tell you how it is. Right after this is Kentucky Sports Radio.

What are y'all doing?
Microphones?
Are you making a rap album?
Oh, I would.
Come on.
I would buy it.
Cut through the defense like a.
Hot knife through sponge cake.
That sounds delicious.
Oh, you're lucky.
I'm not a drug addict.
You're lucky I'm not an alcoholic.
You are.
I'm lucky I'm not a killer.
I love this team, and I'm really trying to be a figure in their lives that they can rely on.
Oh.

Welcome back, Techie Sports Radio here live.
It's Shady Race.
never know what you're going to get when you come to KSR remote.
These folks all got beer.
That's right.
The Kentucky blue light beer is out.
I'm not really a beer drinker, so I defer to you three.
Do we like it?
I give it a 10 out of 10.
Actually, 11 out of 10, a bonus point for being able to help UK get better.
Cool can.
I really think the can's going to help it sell even more.
I mean, that's a cool thing just to have.
Presentations nice, like you said, cool label.
Tastes good.
Tastes like a good light beer.
I've been knowing to drink a beer or two in my day.
I like it.
I think it's really good.
Yeah.
So there you go.
Debues Monday.
It'll be in stores.
I will let you know on the show Monday what stores it's in and where.
Cool.
I think it'll take a while for it to roll out everywhere.
And it'll be in a lot of bars, but I don't know which ones win.
But we do know we'll have it at KS Bar Monday through Sunday and somebody will win beer for a year if you come in at some point during that time.
Adam Luckett just reminded me.
Remember Stoop's quote last year?
pound some beers. They've got to bring that back. That's exactly right. Ryan, you're kind of our
resident historian, although these aren't old players, but the UK Hall of Fame class was announced.
And we didn't really get to go over it. Let's go over real quick. Jody Meeks. Superstar.
Man, you know, he was a superstar. Yeah, I mean, we, most points in a game,
Jody deserves a round of applause. That's great. I love the fact that, too, that after his
plain day, he came back to Kentucky, finished his degree, just one of those guys. I think it's just
not just a great player, but a really good person.
From right here in Louisville, Kentucky, Corey Peters.
Football player.
Oh, yeah.
I had a class with Corey Peters.
I actually got aggravated with him.
You know, athletes, there's kind of a stereotype.
That dude's set in the front of the class.
He'd be the guy like, sir, we forgot the quiz today.
Yes, he did.
I mean, he was very studious and he got on my nerves
because I wanted to be in a fun class with the football players,
but he's up there asking questions,
keeping us after class, and then he's gone on.
He had a great career and did a lot with education.
I think he had some kind of book club.
He played in the NFL.
NFL for a long time. People don't realize
how long he played in the NFL. I don't know
how it was many years, wasn't it? Yeah.
Heck, you might still be there. I think also he deserves
credit for kind of opening that door
for Kentucky to recruit kids from Louisville.
You're exactly right. I mean, we've owned
this city in the last decade
and he was one of the first ones to
break through that kind of like Winston Bennett did in
Louisville for basketball.
He kind of broke through and Kentucky
guys got people in Louisville. Two track
stars, Sidney McLaughlin
LaVroney and Jasmine Comanche.
Quim, both of whom won medals at the Olympics.
I didn't think they were old
enough to be in the Hall of Fame, but they're both
in the UK Hall of Fame. We're capitalizing
on that moment. That's it. I think when you get a gold
medal, they wave off all the other
requirements. So, yeah, you want a gold medal, you're
automatically eligible to be in the Hall of Fame. That may
be true, because they used to be this
like you had to be out of UK for five years.
But, congrats
to both of them. They both deserve it.
Easy picks. Do you know
Henrik Larsen from the rifle?
Yeah. He was, he's the guy.
Godfather of the rifle team.
I mean, he started it.
He's been the coach.
That's his baby right there.
So he deserves being in the Hall of Fame.
And finally, John Crop.
Just legendary administrator at UK.
You know, they named John Crop, the softball complex, is named in his honor.
He's just one of these mainstay guys that have been with that university,
give his heart and soul for just 20, 30 years.
Congrats to all of those folks for making the UK Athletics Hall of Fame.
Who's next, Rick?
Oklahoma.
Jared is up next.
Jared.
Go ahead, Jared.
Hey guys, a couple things here.
I think big thing with the football skate
We've longed in the last two years
But they're projected to be in the bottom four
Yes, they are.
So if we lose that
But that's in three years in a row
I think that's what makes us uneasy
About the future and things like that
It seems like we're kind of falling back
And not even class-towing
If that makes sense
No, I think that's a very fair point
I mean, if you're ranking, I appreciate the call
If you were power ranking the SEC football this year, Shannon, probably South Carolina is 14th out of 16.
It's probably Bandy 16, Mississippi State 15.
They're probably 14, so you can't lose to them at home.
You can't lose to the 14th power ranked team in your home state.
Yeah, if you do lose that game, it doesn't end your season, but it definitely does something for, you know,
what doesn't do anything for fan morale.
It makes it go down.
But later on in the schedule, you've got to make it up somewhere, right?
You've got to pull off an upset, maybe, you know, the Tennessee game.
one of those games you don't expect to win.
Mark Stoops built his program around really passing South Carolina and Missouri on the food chain.
We kind of pass them, and then we would alternate beating Mississippi State,
and that's kind of how we built the program in some ways.
Then we ended up passing Florida.
That kind of took like another little step.
You don't want to regress back riding to where you were before.
Yeah, when you're better than South Carolina, you have a better team, better players.
You got that game at home.
You have to win that game.
Yes, you do.
859-28027.
we are here at Shady Ray's. Malikomareno makes a commitment in the second hour.
That more. We'll take a break and be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio.

Therapy is fantastic.
But once again, it does not have a monopoly on healing.
That's why I create the resources and that's why I create the community because I really just want you to have more access.
On the podcast, Cultivating Her Space, Dr. Dom and Terry Lomax create a space where black women can show up fully and be heard.
It's tough because we're suppressing our emotions and so many of us are like high achieving individuals.
