Welcome to Hour 2 of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Now here's Matt Jones.
Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio.
Hour number 2, 859-280-2287.
Phone's a little slow today, Shane.
You think it's just like the Monday Kentucky Blue Light hangover effect?
Yeah, Mondays are always slow, you know, coming off the weekend.
You get a good.
I mean, there's nothing, to be fair, not a lot happened this week in terms of the world of sports.
But we'll still like to hear from you.
It's a good chance to get in if you've never been in before.
859-280-2287.
One person writes, Matt, I think you're hard on Ryan's facts.
I'm actually writing them down as we go so that I can use them with friends.
They're going to be very surprised to find out Brock Vandergriff is a leader.
That's what you should do with these.
It's okay.
You remember that when he's leading the team out there and has command of the huddle.
And you're going to like that.
Everybody's going to like that.
Maybe you heard it first here on KSR.
I am going to like it.
One person writes, Matt, will Ryan and Drew and Shannon watch any of the Democratic convention this week?
It's a good question.
Will you all watch any of it?
I didn't know it was this week.
Yeah, I'm with Drew.
I didn't even know what was going on.
Where do I find this?
Like on, like, CNN or like, where do I find it?
Every channel.
Every channel, even on ESPN.
Probably won't be on ESPN, but, I mean, I think they show the conventions on all the news channels,
and then they usually show like an hour on the networks.
Yeah, I mean, I may catch the highlights.
I don't think I'm going to sit there.
You think there's going to be highlights, like on SportsCenter?
On the Today Show.
Look at the way Joe Biden broke down this speech.
No, I don't know that they'll do that.
So I'm going to chalk you up as a no.
Yeah.
That's probably.
you, Drew?
That's going to be a no.
If we set my total, if we set my total at one minute watched, I would take the under there.
I don't have any intentions.
What about you, Ryan?
I wish everybody the best, don't they have fun.
Yeah, I think the only Democratic convention I've ever watched is the one I attended live in person.
And after you're there in person, Matt, you know, really kind of diminishes the...
Once you get that atmosphere, you see boys to men warm up.
It's really not weird.
Yeah, you see Michelle Obama's booty.
I mean, there's no more you want to do.
My goodness.
What is what's wrong with him, Shannon?
But asking that question for years.
The problem is I'm not there.
Because if I was there, I would give him a stare right now.
And he would know that that was a mistake.
Like the tubby's stare.
The tubby used to give his players when he was screwed up.
That's right.
That's right.
Matt gives it to me.
Yeah.
Yes.
All right.
One person writes, Matt, I have a question for you.
And by the way, this is a question I get a lot.
Drew, so I think it's worth answering.
Would you like to hear it?
How is it that Kamala Harris will be the nominee
if she never won any of the primaries?
I think that's a good question, don't you, Shannon?
I feel like that's a good question.
Yeah, I don't have the answer.
Let me ask, well, actually, let me get a Ryan guess.
Ryan, how do you think they pick the nominees to run for president,
the Republican and Democratic nominees?
Do you know the answer to this?
I bet most people don't, by the way.
I would bet 99% of the people listen to this don't actually know how someone becomes present,
becomes the candidate for their party.
Do you know, right?
Each state has their delegates, and they, each state basically comes together for one candidate.
And then they...
But how do they decide who the delegates are?
That I don't know.
Okay, Drew, do you know how they decide who the delegates are for the conventions?
blind draw.
I just know that we bounce around and stand.
Just draw people.
They draw people out of a hat and say you're going to be a delegate this year?
I just know that anyone can be a delegate as we proved.
We were not deligate.
We didn't get to vote.
Well, we stood with them at every.
Cheered with New Hampshire.
Shannon, do you know how you get to be a delegate?
I don't have a clue.
I don't even have a good guess.
So this is for both parties.
Here's how they do it.
Okay.
Used to be that the party, the leaders of the,
the party would pick the delegates and then they would go to the convention and they would pick the
candidates and it used to be until like the 50s and 60s Ryan I bet you didn't know there were no
primaries at all did you know that there were no primaries no no the delegates would go to a convention
and then they would pick and often they would fight with each other and sometimes local counties
would have elections to pick the delegate so you'd have Shannon like an election to pick between
Ryan and Drew to decide who's going to go pick the president no no idea
But then they decided, like, in the 50s, some states in the 50s, some states in the 60s, some in the 70s, you know, that doesn't seem very fair.
That's not very democratic.
So then they started having primary races.
But what people don't know is when you go to vote in the primary for like Donald Trump or Joe Biden or whatever, you're actually, Ryan, I bet you don't know this.
You're really not voting for them.
You're voting for them to get to pick who the delegates are.
Does that make sense?
Yeah.
So you're actually not voting for Donald Trump to be the nominee.
You're voting for Donald Trump's campaign to get to pick the delegates.
So we had 50 primary campaigns.
Biden, I think, won all of them.
So Biden got to pick all the delegates.
But when he drops out, whoever he picked, Ryan, they now are free, in theory, to go pick whoever they want.
and they basically, the majority, I don't know how many,
have all decided to pick Harris.
But they didn't have to.
As a matter of fact, I suspect there will be people in that building
who will pick someone else.
They are free to do it, but she will have the most and she will win.
But that's how she was picked.
So when people say, well, she didn't win a primary, that's true.
But that's not how we do it.
We pick the person, Ryan, who picks the delegates.
But you didn't know that, did you?
No.
So, like they would say the grace.
state of Kentucky has one delegate for Matt Jones and 13 for Kamala Harris.
Well, you may remember we did that.
Like when we went to the Trump convention, like there were a lot of delegates there
who were pledged to like Ted Cruz or somebody like that.
Bernie.
But when we went to the Democrat, yes, Bernie, remember that woman screaming that day
at the convention?
They were committed to Bernie because he had won enough of the state that he got to pick
them.
So this time Biden, I think, got to pick them all because nobody ran against him.
But when they get there, Ryan, in theory, they could pick whoever they wanted.
Well, when you explain it like that, it doesn't seem very Democratic at all.
We are really, the public's not really not picking it who they want to look for.
That's why when people get on, when people go crazy about the primary and they go,
this is an unprecedented whatever democracy.
No, it's not.
That process hasn't really never been democratic.
I think it's a stupid process, by the way.
Why do we go, Sheena, why do we pick people to go pick for us?
Why don't we just pick ourselves?
That would make more sense to me.
It would make more sense, but that's not what we do.
When they go to the, yes, that was the woman who yelled when we went to the Democratic convention.
Yes.
But the answer probably is like Shannon, a situation like this.
What if everybody picks somebody and then they drop out or something happens to them, then who's the candidate?
Right.
Yeah.
So they create like this so that other.
people can pick them. So there's your little civics lesson
for the day. All right. Give us our next interesting fact, Ryan.
All right, we're going right tackle. And this is another
position where most people probably had no idea who the starter was. Right guard
and right tackle. A complete mystery going into fall camp. But we're going to give it
to Gerald Mincy, the transfer from Tennessee. He's also
the largest of all the starting offensive line at 335 pounds. He's a big
dude, but even though he's big, he likes to write poetry.
And he says he's...
Oh.
Yeah.
So he weighs 335 pounds.
He's the biggest offensive lineman, comes from the University of Tennessee, and likes to write poetry.
Yes.
Gerald Mincy.
All right.
Shannon, interesting fact.
Ryan, congratulations.
You finally got one right.
I'm going to give that to you.
A big lineman.
He writes poetry.
I love it.
It took his sixth one, but I think he's starting to understand the assignment.
That's right.
He's getting it.
He comes from Tennessee.
I believe, Drew, wasn't this guy like a crazy high recruit coming out of high school?
Or is that somebody else?
I mean, I don't know about crazy how, but he has a big recruit.
He also played a year at Florida.
He started at Florida, then two years at Tennessee.
All right.
So he's just going through the SEC.
Yeah.
Play at all the schools before he goes.
That's fine with me.
All right, Drew, what's your fact?
I'm going to stay in the middle linebacker with Derek Jackson.
We call him D Jack.
It's gone through a lot of adversity.
He tore his Achilles in April 2021.
They said he'd missed the whole season.
He was back practicing by October.
It's a little superhuman there.
And then he was the lowest rank recruit in Kentucky's 2020 class, I believe.
And interesting fact about that, he came to a camp to earn his scholarship.
And he and his dad slept in the car during their visit in Lexington and ended up working out for him.
Now he's some teams have him or some of the publications have him as preseason all SEC this year.
he's been amazing for UK.
And this season, he's dedicating to his grandmother who passed away last spring,
shortly after he had a career day against Louisville and the Governor's Cup.
So a lot of cool stories and reasons.
What a great story.
So I'm going to go back to that.
He came to a camp.
And I guess because he wasn't on an official visit, they couldn't put him up.
And he and his dad slept in their car to be able to come to the camp?
According to a story on On Three Sports, which I trust, yes.
He was just not that highly rated.
of a recruit, like I said, the lowest in the class.
And then, of course, he started 20-something games for UK.
He's been a real star and on the NFL's radar.
Well, Ryan, that's got to make.
Like, how can that not be your favorite player?
Like a guy who goes through that, Derek Jackson, Ryan, I, that's good.
I knew him as a player, but I didn't know that part of his story.
Ryan, that's going to be my favorite player of the year.
And he's, you know, he's a hitter too, man.
I think people love him because he goes out there and he just, he'll knock your jock off
if you get him a chance.
a big time hitter.
That's nice.
It's true.
Big player, though.
Big player.
You know, Shannon, I don't know what to do about him.
He's the oldest of the group, right?
So it's not going to, you know, the thing is, it's not going to get any better.
That's the thing with him.
Like, it's not going to, like, all of a sudden he's going to be more, like, normal.
More mature?
The older you get, the less you care, you know.
That's unfortunately true.
That was 100% interesting.
Good job, Drew.
Very good.
That's the best one so far.
Yes.
All right, Ryan, what's your next offensive one?
We're going to stand on the line.
We're going tight in.
Josh Caddus came in as the same year with Dane,
so I've got to know him really well.
He's been at my house a couple times.
And I told this story.
When all the players were there at the house and they were eating and talking,
my son was sitting, Josiah, was sitting over by himself on the couch.
And Josh Caddus was the only one that walked over there and sat beside him
and carried on a legit conversation with Josiah.
And I said, well, that, to me, that showed a lot of what kind of person he is.
He's a great guy, always somebody that goes to the children's hospital for visits and stuff.
but on the football field, he's a badass.
I mean, he's caught a couple touchdown passes.
We've seen him make these just mammoth blocks on the football field.
His dad was a tight-in at Michigan.
His dad played for the Cincinnati Bengals.
But the one interesting fact that Matt will probably scratch it all,
he loves to play pickleball.
He's a big pickleball player.
Oh, my goodness.
Well, there's my least favorite player of the year.
So, all right, Shannon's also on the team, just to add to that.
That's right.
All right.
So, Shannon, he likes pickleball.
and talk to Josiah.
Interesting fact.
Many visits kids' hospitals.
I feel like I gotta give him a
yes on that one.
Usually you don't fall for the sympathy ones.
Usually you're hard against that.
You are getting soft in your old age.
All right, Drew, one last one before the break.
What is it?
Another guy we all love to root for,
JJ Weaver.
We know so much about him.
I'm not going to take the easy way out
and say he has six fingers.
That's a common fact.
He was our Governor's Cup MVP.
last year having a big game, and he recently won the Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame's
Ron Butler Character and Adversity Award.
A lot of people know what he's been through.
He lost his father, lost his high school coach, had a season-ending injury,
and going through all that last year at Media Days, he opened up about his struggles,
and then he started a campus support group called the Perfect Fit Support Group for people
just need some help over at UK, and this year it will be available to all students.
I love this kid for no other reason than just that one.
I mean, this is a guy who has helped create an organization at the UK that will long outlive him, JJ Weaver.
I mean, he's made it to where basically any athlete at UK on any sport who's dealing with any mental like chat, like, you know, mental health issue can get the treatment that they need from the university.
That wasn't always the case.
J.J. helped set that up.
And Ryan, if there was nothing else, that dude is going to leave a long legacy at UK.
I watched a whole presentation about it that the health people did for other people in mental health working in it.
What an awesome story.
And I hope that kid has a massive year.
I think people love him, not just a football player, but the type of person he is.
And he's proven it now for six years.
He will go down like some of these great players we've had over the years.
Maybe not had a great success on the field, but just the type of person here and the legacy they leave, that's what he's going to be all about.
We could do a whole show on what he does off the field.
He's nominated for the war.
He has a bicycle drive, always doing stuff in the community.
He's a fan favorite and deserves it.
You want your kid to have a perspective on the world like J.J. Weaver does.
So big salute to him.
Red State barbecue's been serving quality smoke meats to Central Kentucky for nearly 14 years.
Seven days a week.
You can go to Red State, get brisket.
You know, fall off the bone ribs, pork, wings, they got all of it.
And they have specialties, a smoked half chicken, a smoked strip loin on Saturdays and Sundays.
It's great stuff.
Don't forget the mac and cheese.
It's so good.
Probably the best in the city.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross.
Because you find it important to be a good person

Are you a good person because you're afraid?

Absolutely.

I'm a comedian, and recently, I've become quite the helper myself.

What's up, fam?
It's Isaiah Thomas.
And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about Define the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves,
I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything.
everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson,
we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nass would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball.
Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah.
You figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast,
or wherever you get your podcasts.
Welcome back, Tegu Sports Radio.
859-280-2-807.
A couple things real quick before we go to the phones.
The KSR preseason high school football reggings came out.
The real game starts this week.
Boyle County, number one in the state.
Nine of ten votes for first place.
Went to Boyle County.
Trinity was second and had one vote,
and Frederick Douglas was third.
Ryan, you like those rankings.
Yeah, Boyle County's really good.
They've got the Quisenberry kid who may be the best player in the state right now.
And Douglas has to play down at Boyle
county this year. And they play Trinity at home. They got both those teams.
So they play the number, so their number three, they play one and two, right?
Yeah, yeah. So you get a chance to decide, see what, see if you guys are any good.
One person writes, Matt, let's say Trump were to drop out tomorrow. What would happen then?
Shannon, do you know what would happen then? J.D. Vance would be the Republican.
Well, maybe. But what they would do is until September 8th, the candidates are not
set set. So if he dropped
out, they would have, Shannon, like,
a virtual convention. They literally
have a conference call
and all the delegates that Trump
picked in each state, they
would decide who their candidate is.
You see what I'm saying? Yeah.
So they would, like, literally get
on a conference call,
and they'd be like,
uh, I vote for,
and then they would just, and whoever got the most,
uh, Shannon would be the candidate. Okay.
So, well, I mean, I think J.D.
Maybe a heck of a Zoom call, but that would be, that would be, yeah.
That would be quite a Zoom call that I'd like to listen to.
Who's up first?
Well, let's go to Pops.
Pops, how are you?
Doing good.
Thank you.
Ryan, so glad that you got on the board.
We was getting worried about you.
Yeah, me too.
And I thank you, K, ready for this football and the basketball to get started.
Yep.
Very anxious for it.
And I want to get a shout out.
to the 12 U, Camelsville,
Cal Riponle, they won the U.S. Championship,
and they got beat by, instead of the world,
they got beat in the world, in the championship game, war games,
they got beat by the Dominican Republic.
Dominican Republic.
So Campbellsville, a group of kids from Campbellsville played against the Dominican Republic
kids.
Yeah, it was for the World Series.
in the Cal Ripon.
That is very cool.
They won.
Well, I didn't know this.
So when did this happen, sir?
Over the weekend.
Wow.
Well, congrats to the kids in Campbellsville and Taylor County.
First time ever.
Well, yeah.
That is awesome.
Big shout out.
Tell all the kids, KSR said, congrats.
They're going to have a big prey for them this week.
Everybody's proud of them.
I am.
They should be.
They should be.
Thank you.
Appreciate the call.
How about that, Ryan?
Cal Rip, you know, some people think, right,
Cal Ripkin's even better than Little League, isn't it?
Yeah, I think it was 10U,
and they played southeastern of Lexington in the national championship.
Two Kentucky teams were in the United States championship,
Campbellsville won to go to the World Series.
They got beat.
So I just kind of tells you how good youth baseball is in this state.
No kidding.
That's awesome.
Well, good for them.
Good for both those schools.
I didn't know about either one of those.
and, you know, Taylor County and the Dominican Republic.
I'd like to have heard the pregame handshakes for that one, Drew, wouldn't you?
Oh, yeah.
Now I think we've got to get Ryan to the Cal Ripkin Stadium and check that off his bucket list, too.
Let's do it.
I'm on it.
Yeah, the World League World Series going on now.
We are still, remember, we have a three-year band.
So, Ryan, stay home during the entire thing.
What's next?
Trevor.
Trevor, go ahead, Trevor.
How are you guys doing today?
Good.
I got an interesting fact
It's not about University of Kentucky football
But it's about the University of Alabama
And me being a football fan in general
Me being a football fan in general
I found this as like fascinating
Okay
41 of their players can run 20 miles an hour
Better than 20 last
But I don't know what that means
Like when you say run 20 miles an hour
Like how many Kentucky guys
can run 20 miles an hour.
Like, I don't have any basis of comparison.
Well, that's the thing.
You can look up, I haven't done this yet, but you can look up the stats because they have
these things that clip onto the shoulder pads of all these college players that will monitor
their speed, their heart rate, and their recovery throughout practice.
And I haven't looked up Kentucky's yet, but I'd say it's pretty good because we got some
quick.
Yeah, see, I just don't know, like, Drew, I don't know what that means.
I appreciate the call.
Like, is 20, I mean, 20 miles an hour sounds fast to me, but like, do a ton of athletes do that?
Like, I don't know what, I don't really know what that means.
I can put a little perspective on it for what it means to Alabama.
They almost doubled the amount from last year under Sabin.
I think they had 23 players that could do it last year.
Now they have 41.
So it's showing how Alabama is changing.
He prioritized no bigger, stronger, and Kailen DeBore is looking to play with quicker or faster.
So it's more about Alabama doubling the.
the amount of people and kind of changing how they'll play moving forward.
That's interesting.
Like, Shannon, what would be the top speed of us?
Oh, seven miles.
Seven, maybe eight.
More than seven.
I bet we could get to.
Okay, get on a treadmill, set it at eight and see if you can do it.
Yeah, but that's eight at a consistent pace.
I'm saying you just run as hard as you can.
What do you think our top speed would be at our maximum moment?
Like what you could peek at?
Yeah.
No, I mean, I couldn't run, I couldn't run three consistently.
The question is, could you run, like, we just sprint and we hit our top speed.
What are we hitting?
I don't think we're going over 10.
I think Ambium Matt could probably hit 10.
I think he thought he could that day.
I could beat anybody in a race.
All right, what's your next fact, Shannon?
Or not Shannon, sorry, Ryan.
Okay, I'm going to go to running back.
Even though Demi Sumo Kang Bay may be the starter of the first two games, and I got
I do have a good story about him.
Hold on, first of all, say the name again.
Demi Sumo Kangbe.
He did it.
Yeah.
It took seven pool parties, but he got it.
He's been at my house last two years.
You know, we have Dante Grills, burgers, and hot dogs.
He's got all kinds of food, and Nicole makes all this food.
Demi always has a massive plate of food, finishes it,
and then doubles that and triples that to take home.
Like he takes a take-home box of food that's big.
than any of the offensive linemen would you.
That's that I'm going to talk about.
I'm going to talk about.
Shannon,
there's your,
no way,
because he's the starter.
You're supposed to do it on the starters.
Well,
I was going to do.
The interesting fact about Dime is that he eats a lot of food.
Interesting fact,
Shannon.
He likes leftovers.
I like leftovers too.
Yeah.
No.
You're a poor college kid and somebody's getting you food.
You load up.
All right.
Quickly,
what's your other one?
Okay.
Chip training him is going to be the mains guy.
You know,
he's hurt.
He's going to miss a couple games.
His real first name is Diamante, by the way.
Everybody calls him Chip Train him.
And here's his interesting fact.
He started at Arizona, transferred to Ohio State,
actually played linebacker at Ohio State before moving back over to running back.
And he played running back and linebacker at Ohio State.
Shannon, verdict?
I'll give it a correct.
Yeah.
Ah, you gets one.
We'll be right back.
Last night, a blown call changed the game.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you

Or are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue with 42.
Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her.
What?
Where's she at?

define the odds.
Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
And finding ways to win no matter what.
He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the
lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reed.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Steve Nass would get that thing.
That man, hell get the flying.
He run up the court licking his fingers while he got the ball.
Like, after you go through a training camp with that, IZE, you figure it out real quick.
Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.

Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Welcome back, Tucky Sports Radio. I want to make one quick little, what do you call it,
correction to one of the things I said earlier. In Kentucky, Drew, with the primaries,
we actually do it slightly different than I said, which is each county in Kentucky picks their own delegates,
and then the parties have agreed that whoever wins the primary, that's who those people will vote for.
Does that make sense?
Which means actually in the primary, you're not picking anybody.
You're just picking like something.
I think what people don't realize is it hasn't happened in a long time.
But Ryan, when you were a kid, those conventions could have a lot of controversy because you didn't even know who the nominee would be yet.
I would prefer to go back to those days, to be honest.
You like that?
Just in the formality of.
rubber stamping who is that we all know the candidate's going to be that's kind of what i hope the
democrats would do by the way when biden dropped out i hope they would just let it be an open
convention because shannon you would watch if like you didn't know who it was going to be and everybody
was arguing yeah and we could find out like would they show it right there on live tv who it would be
like a reality show oh yeah i would definitely watch you remember when we did the thing where like
we stood in the groups and they would go the great state of idaho home of potatoes and then
they say the things.
Right.
That would be like they would be announcing for the first time the votes.
And it would be very, it would be like Survivor, wouldn't it?
It would be kind of exciting.
I think people would actually tune in to watch that.
I know, of course they would.
I don't think there's any doubt that people would.
Quickly, basketball recruiting.
Drew, update people.
You know, Friday I said, I thought it was Kentucky, Alabama with Jasper Johnson.
I've kind of been tuned out of it this weekend.
So I don't know the latest.
It feels like it ebbed and flowed.
Where is it right now?
from what you're here.
It is a roller coaster is what it is.
I can't remember a recruitment with this much drama winding down.
He's still aiming for the end of this month.
I think he's about eight, nine days away.
But you know, we hear a lot that it was narrowed down to UK and Alabama.
Then Travis Brannum, I believe, from 24-7,
mentioned North Carolina's back in the mix.
It's almost like depending what day and who you're asking.
It's changing.
But I'd say just overall, Kentucky's still right there in the hunt,
whether you believe Alabama or North Carolina.
or in the lead. I think most believe still Alabama, but it's a wild ride, and I think everyone's
ready for him to just make a decision. Yeah. If you were on KSR, KS Board, I put this earlier in the
weekend, and there's been a lot of updates on there if you want to join the community. But this is,
I made a comment that I think people didn't understand what I meant. Let me, let me sort of clarify.
I said that, I said Kentucky was, I thought it was down to Kentucky and Alabama, and I liked where Kentucky
was. That's still the case. I still feel today better about where Kentucky is than any of the other
schools. I still, you know, we're 10 days away. But if the decision was today, I feel like Kentucky
would be the decision. One of the things I said was NIL won't be what he picks. It'll be where he
wants to go. What I mean by that is I think the NIL offers now, at least from Kentucky and
Alabama. North Carolina may have pulled to the same, but they're basically Ryan the same at this
point. Okay. So then it will come down to where does he want to go. I think there was a moment where
Alabama's was a lot higher than Kentucky's, and basically Kentucky is now in the same place,
and it'll just be where he wants to go to school. Now, there's always the opportunity or the option
that like all of a sudden Alabama or North Carolina goes even higher, and at which point maybe it
changes. But I think if you were talking today, I think at least with Kentucky and Alabama,
he's looking at the same thing and it's just where do you want to go to school.
And, you know, Nate Oates and Alabama, they've been recruiting him a lot longer and they've had
more time to develop that relationship. Mark Pope's been playing catch up since he got there with
Jasper Johnson. You know what I mean? I think Cala Perry staff, they were kind of just
passively recruiting him. Well, Pope's put the all court full court press on, but they got a lot of
ground to make up because Alabama had already been there for years and years on Jasper.
And he grew up a Carolina fan.
Yeah.
He did grow up a Carolina fan.
Let me just say this when it comes to basketball recruiting, especially online.
I'm not saying that any of these people that claim to know something do or don't, because
I don't know any of them.
There's like in the Cal era, there's like all these new names that pop up, and I just
don't know any of those people.
So they may know, they may not, I'm not saying.
But I do know that for me personally, I'm looking to hear what the people on this show
or Travis Graff or or Brandham.
Is it both Travis, right?
Brandum or Jack Pilgrim, like what they say.
Because there's a lot of stuff I see floating around that just isn't true.
And then it becomes the narrative.
And I actually think that hurts us in some ways, the program.
So just, but I would say right now, the money as of this moment will not be what makes
Jasper Johnson's decision.
All right.
What's your next fact?
I guess I'm up right here.
We'll move on to cornerback.
We'll start with the starting cornerback.
Everyone knows Maxwell Harrison had a big year.
He was ranked fifth nationally in interceptions last season and led the SEC in
interceptions, interception returns, interception return yards and touchdowns.
He was the only Kentucky player in history to have two interceptions returned for touchdown in a single game.
We all remember that well.
Did I already say his nickname's Mad Max?
And then his fun fact that's a little off the football grid.
you know a lot of these people play multiple sports some people run track basketball in high school he was a member of the choir
oh that's nice that's good i like that very versatile um i don't think people realize ryan that we had the nation's leader in
interceptions last year and he's returning do you think people actually process that and realize it no no like
the same way you don't know ray davis broke the touchdown record like to those both kind of slipped in on everybody
but it's a fact. Maxwell Harrison
ended up leading the nation in interceptions
last year, a guy that wasn't for sure
was even going to be the starter when the season started.
Yeah, it is amazing. Interesting
fact, Shannon. Yes, yeah. Football player
in the choir, absolutely.
All right, there you go. Drew has got a perfect
score. He does, yeah. Ryan's on a roll.
He's had two straight good ones. What's your
next fact? We're going to
go up to the receivers, and we're going to
start with the new one, Jamar Macklin, J. Mack.
You know, he takes the place of
Tavion Robinson at the
slot. He's also going to wear Tavion Robinson's number, and they're like identical guys.
They're like, you know, these speedy little scat-back guys. But Jay Mack, I think the
interesting fact about him, he's got 14 brothers and sisters, 14 siblings. Oh, wow. Big house.
Big house. 14 brothers and sisters. 14. How many did tubby have? Because that was a big thing
when he was here. It was double digits. You're right. It was maybe 11 or 12. 14. Have you ever,
how many is Terry Miners have, Shannon? He's.
He's got like a tough, right?
He's got a big family.
I'm not sure that it's 14 or anywhere close to that.
It's like eight or nine, isn't it?
Yeah, I think so.
But 14.
Have you ever known anybody with 14 brothers and sisters?
No, no.
No.
It's that crazy TV show.
What's there?
Whatever the show was.
They had like 18, 19.
What's it called?
The Duggers.
The Duggers.
Didn't they have a weird ending to their show?
Yeah, they sure did.
There's a lot of tugging going on.
Yeah.
That's a lot.
19 kids and counting is the show he's talking about.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think so.
I think so.
All right.
There you go.
Yeah,
Geron's getting better.
You should have started it with the line.
I didn't understand that.
I thought he started with the best ones.
He was like, I'm starting with the best ones.
Eli Cox is good.
All right.
Well, that's a good start, right.
All right.
What's yours, Drew?
Moving to the other corner.
You know, this could be either Jansen Dunn.
or DJ Waller, who transferred from Michigan,
won a national championship,
but I'll focus on Dunn.
He seems to be slotted there right now.
He transferred in after playing two seasons at Ohio State.
He originally committed to Oklahoma briefly,
but he's from Bowling Green,
went to South Warren.
He was the number two player in Kentucky.
Jagger Burton was first,
then Jansen Dunn, then Gavin Wimson,
then DeKal Croutis.
Kentucky ended up with 8 of 10 in that recruiting class.
He scored a touchdown for South Warren
against Cove Cath and the
state championship game in 2018.
And my interesting fact is he has a cousin on the team named Dane Key.
How about that?
All right, Shane.
Is it interesting that Jansen Dunn is cousins with Dan Key?
Yeah, I'll say it's interesting.
Thank you, Shane.
I thought that one was going to be close.
So you don't think Drew DJ Waller from Michigan is going to start?
Yeah, I just don't think they were giving it to him right away.
He even missed a little, he missed the first scrimmage, I think.
All those guys are going to get plenty of opportunities.
The cream will rise there.
They finally have a lot of depth.
that spot. But I went with him for this exercise being a Kentucky guy and, you know, one that they
lost the first time around and then let him go be a Buckeye for two years and then he came on home.
All right. Sounds good. Who's next, Shannon? Let's go to Mark Anthony. Mark Anthony. How are you?
Matthew, Ryan, Drew, Shannon. Hey, man, I must thank you, first of all, for the show.
It's really good. I'm really interested. And it's good to have the names of the starters and a couple
little facts or opinions.
Anyway,
Dumae Johnson,
I don't know when he broke his arm,
but I plainly remember seeing him play
football on a random Saturday afternoon
against somebody I don't remember.
But the pleper-playing color guy
could not get his name out of their mouth.
He was in on every defensive stop.
So I was, I'm excited when I heard he was coming.
I was excited about that.
I'm keen to see what he can get done.
Now, last of all, fellas,
I'm just glad Shannon don't judge me.
Thank you.
Yeah, Shannon's a harsh judge.
There's no doubt about that.
You have to bring it if you want,
if you want Shannon to do well.
My mom just told me, Shannon,
that my grandfather had 11 siblings.
Oh, really?
I didn't realize that.
I knew he had a bunch, but I didn't know.
That's close.
That's not the Morgan Wallin side.
That's the other side.
But 11 siblings, that's a lot.
Brian, tell me about Stockton Mortgage.

It's easier.
There's a button right there.
It says, get started.
You hit that.
You'll immediately be hooked up with a loan officer.
You call me and I'll tell you who can use.
Stockton mortgage, NMLS, 825.
I'm told, is it Jemory Maclin, not Jamar Macklin?
J-Mack, Jamari.
Okay.
So did you say, so Jamari, not Jamari, Jamari, Jamari-Maklin, the North Texas transfer.
We'll take a break.
Be right back.
Final segments, KSR.
Welcome back.
Take you Sports Radio.
859-280-2287.
Text machine, 772-7524.
Got a couple things they got to do here.
Draft Kings.
Go to Draft Kings.
promo code KSR, bet five, get $150, getting ready for the NFL season.
We got to pick a game today.
Not a lot of choices.
So, Drew, I'm going to go to the Little League World Series.
How about that?
Lake Mary, Florida against Bourne, Texas.
Both teams are undefeated in pool play.
These are some people think are the two best teams.
Do you like Lake Mary Florida or Bourne, Texas?
I'm going Lake Mary Florida, and I have no.
No reasoning behind that pick, but I'm feeling good about the fighting Lake Mary Florida's.
You know, Shannon, you can bet the Little League World Series online.
I feel like if you had information on these teams, Shannon, you might be able to get some, get a bonus.
I think I'm going to do it anyway.
I don't know anything about them.
I know that, you know, I feel like people in Texas are tougher than people in Florida.
I think so.
So I think the Texas kids are tough.
They're going to win this game.
Lee Corso is from Lake Mary.
Oh, he is.
Then I was going to take them anyway.
Lake Mary Florida.
If you grow up in Lee Corso's backyard, Ryan, you have to take them.
I'm taking Florida.
I'm going to take Bourne, Texas.
I feel like that sounds like a town.
There's nothing to do in that town but play baseball.
The Rangers have been really good lately.
The Houston Astros have been really good lately.
So the state of Texas has become a baseball state.
I'm going born Texas.
Because it sounds like bored.
Is that why you're picking it because it's born?
I like that he's going to do it because the Rangers have been good,
which might even be on the other side of the state.
We're not sure, but that's all right.
I like it.
One serious thing that is happening right now, and I want to at least note it, in Elizabethtown, outside the courthouse this morning, there was a shooting.
Three people shot.
I haven't gotten a final word on their status, but I think it's not great.
And the shooter is still at large.
So for everyone in Elizabeth town, it was outside the courthouse as people were waiting to go into the courthouse.
So prayers to everybody, that's an awful situation and prayers to everybody, the victims,
but also the people in the community, as apparently the shooter is still at large in Hardin County.
Sad.
Yeah, that is sad.
No really way to transition that.
So I'll just go to the next call.
Who's up?
All right.
Let's go to Stewart.
Stuart.
Go ahead, Stewart.
Good morning, Matthew.
Good morning.
You and I both graduated from the same institute of higher learning.
there on Broadway in Lexington, also known as Transylvania.
Transylvania.
And we shared a professor in common who just retired.
Now, I broke him in among his first years there, and you had him, I think, kind of
in the middle or the end of his year, Dr. Dugie just retired after 30-some-odd years.
I did not know Dr. Dugge retired.
Wow.
He did.
I knew.
I thought he would be there, like, until.
they shut the place down.
I mean, he would, that was my, that was my political science professor, probably the professor
one of two that I was the closest to.
Yep.
He was the guy who told me, Drew, before I went to Duke, he said, if you sound like you do
with your voice, they're all going to think you're an idiot.
And I was like, well, I can't really change.
And he goes, I said, well, I can't really change my voice.
And he goes, no, don't change it.
He was like, make them think you're an idiot, and then you'll get them when you're actually smart.
And Drew, I actually always like that advice, honestly.
I think I've heard you tell that story on these airwaves before, too.
That's exactly right.
That was Don Doogie that told me that.
I had heard you mention him a number of times, and I saw in the bulletin that Trancy sends out that he had just retired.
And he influenced me, and I know I've heard you speak that he influenced you.
He was a great guy.
Yeah, no, I'm glad you.
Thanks for sharing that with me.
I appreciate the call.
He probably was one of the most, if not the most influential professors I had.
He really encouraged me to apply to the best law schools I could,
and he really got me to think about things in a different way.
And so, yeah, he's definitely worth a salute.
I haven't seen him in a long time.
I used to see him Shannon at off-track betting at Kingland Nationally back before you could do that on your phone.
But a big shout out to Don Doogie.
Who's next?
Matt.
Matt.
Go ahead, Matt.
Hey, Matt, first time, long time.
Who are?
Hey, I'm a Texas attorney, Kentucky alum, and most importantly, a cast fan.
I got a question for you.
So you all been talking about how we can't be good, you don't think,
under the House settlement, both football and basketball.
But, I mean, you look at Auburn, you look at Bama, you look at Tennessee.
They've ostensibly become two sports schools, too.
So how do we continue competing?
Well, first of all, we kind of be in like the rest of the SEC.
a two sports school.
Okay.
I mean, Alabama.
Yeah, we are.
What I mean of going forward under House.
Yes, but
the house will make,
okay, so that's a fair question.
Under the new settlement with
the money that is distributed,
the issue for Kentucky is going to
be the same issue, and that is that
we don't have enough donors.
If we had donors that could give
$20 million in NIL, then actually
I think you could be great at both.
But all house settlement's going to do is sort of raise the minimum wage.
But what it does allow is a school could make a decision of, okay, we can't raise all this money from donors.
But we can make up with these other schools raised from donors by using this pot of money we're given away.
Does that make sense?
So if you have a zillion donors, then you can be good at everything.
But if you don't, a school could say, okay, I don't have the donors to be good at both.
but this pot of money from house, I'll all put it to one sport, and we can be good at that,
and then the other one just suffers.
Does that make sense?
Yeah, it does.
That's the part that it's been hard for me, and I'm guessing some other listeners, too,
is thinking about kind of the interplay between House and NIL, because NIL will still be there.
In I will still be there.
Yeah.
And I will still be there, but I'm going to make your prediction.
I don't think the numbers will be as high because when the House settlement becomes law,
what's going to end up happening is I think Congress will put a cap on the NIL money,
and I think the courts will allow it because of the House settlement.
