26th, yes.
As always, Connecticut Sports Radio is sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office called T.J. Shannon, what happens?
He'll make them pay.
He'll make them pay.
We'll have our Kentucky branded tweet of the day.
We'll have our Whiskey Thief Song of the Day.
I got the old A-Vision Glass text machine is back.
502-735-3680 is the text machine number.
We've got this week because, as you know, Drew, our big toe is off this week.
But guess who's on the hotline right now?
I think this will probably be our call a day.
Our carge pumping shop call a day from somewhere in Colorado.
It's our big toe Matt Jones.
Hello, Matt.
Hello, fellas.
I'm in Bailey, Colorado here in the Rocky Mountains on like a resort off of it
where there's very little cell service, but I'm doing great,
and we are one week away from football.
But I miss you guys.
It's cold as it can be here, but it's beautiful and excited to be here.
Well, the big question is, did you complete the required reading before you went out there for your fellowship?
The answer to that question is no. I did not. I've done most of it. And there's like some free time. So I hope I'm able to catch up.
It was all of your favorite yesterday, Ryan and Drew, it was your favorite readings. It was Aristotle and it was Hobbes Leviathan, which are two things that I assume you guys also read this weekend and are able to discuss.
I didn't get to that, maybe a little bit,
recognize one of those maybe from elementary school,
but we're glad you got some of your reading done.
Have you had any of your actual events out there yet?
Were they, any cosplay or karaoke or any wild nights out yet?
Well, there's a lot of cosplay.
You dress up as Aristotle.
It's a lot of fun.
No, no, it's good.
It's a different, you know, it's a completely different environment
than I'm used to because people, like,
they sit around and have very serious,
conversations. There's a guy in my group that went to Southern Miss. So I was trying to talk
trash to him and be like, you know, we play you on Saturday. You're ready to get beat? And he was
like, yes, we are going to get beat. We're going to get beat badly. We are terrible this year.
And I went, well, all right, that wasn't as fun as I thought it was. I thought it'd be go back
and forth a little bit. What is on the agenda for today then, like enlighten us? What do you
guys do today.
All right.
So how about this?
How about Shannon?
Are you there as well?
I'm going to read you.
I'm going to read you the readings.
You tell me which of these you would be excited to read.
Are you ready?
All right.
Let's go.
Another Aristotle.
So we get our second dose of Aristotle.
Then Jean Jacques Rougeau, the social contract, the Declaration of Independence,
and then Frederick Hayek, the road to surf them.
Which of those sounds most interesting?
to you, Shannon.
Jacques Rugeot, I believe he was the Mountie from the WWE.
I think that was his actual name was Jacques Rugeot.
Yes, it was.
You're exactly right.
He always gets his man.
He always does the man.
That's right.
He always gets his man, Shannon.
So give me the Mountie.
The Mountie.
All right, Ryan, which of those would be your favorite?
The only four that I've even heard of is the Declaration of Independence.
So I'd be all in on that one.
All right.
So let's try.
Let's see.
Do you, can you, do you remember, Ryan, how the Declaration of Independence starts?
We the people.
That's the Constitution.
You got another one in you?
Four score seven years ago.
That's the Gettysburg.
That's Abraham Lincoln.
One more.
Yeah, all right.
One more.
Isn't there something about some truths being self-evident?
Is that somewhere?
Listen to Drew Freitling with his knowledge there.
I watch a lot of Nicholas Cage movies.
We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are not created equal.
There we go.
No, they are created.
They are created equal.
close.
You got so close, Ryan.
We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are not created.
That's how you thought the declaration bid a minute started.
Well, you know, live radio, you know, we're just, we're winging it here.
All right.
Well, that's fine.
So I did however get to watch this weekend.
It was nice seeing college football start.
And I have to tell you, Drew, I was very excited to see Florida State lose,
probably the biggest whining complaint last year by Florida State fans that they weren't in when they shouldn't be in.
I have to admit, I loved watching them lose in jolly old Ireland.
That was a great start to football.
We got a nice week zero beginning with just hearing Reese Davis on my TV again.
I watched Game Day.
I thought Nick Saban was a nice addition to that.
Looking forward to having him.
But in that game, I watched, I didn't catch the first quarter, but caught enough of it to see pretty much the whole game and how it ended.
That was a great debut, not just Florida State going down, which is awesome,
but we got a great first marquee game, made a little money, betting on Georgia Tech in the under.
So it was a nice appetizer of what's to come this week with week one starting.
Yeah, I love, I mean, first of all, I do think Sabin's really good on Game Day.
Actually, you know, it's the same reason.
We used to say that about Cal.
I actually think he'd be good when he's done doing that kind of thing on college basketball,
but I thought Sabin was great.
Shannon, you had to like, Seamus was their celebrity guest pick.
and got it right. He picked Georgia Tech in Ireland. He was the only guy who got it right.
Yeah. Yeah, Seamus got, and I also understand that he went out and had a beer chugging contest
with Pat McAfee the night before. That probably didn't go. I bet he couldn't. Yeah, he couldn't
be Drew. No, no, he probably could. No chance. I guarantee you he cannot be Drew. If
Seamus wants to go against Drew, I know who's going to win that battle. But it was a good,
it was a great start to the season. And I also think it shows, you know, Ryan, we've talked about the
UK basketball, or excuse me, UK football first games.
and how they are slow over the years.
It feels like it was only, what, 12 years ago
that that first loss on the opening game
was to Southern Miss,
the start of the,
or kind of the end of the Joker Phillips there.
Remember that game well, yeah,
open it up at home and lose that game to Southern Miss
that came in there and kind of dominated the second half.
But I think I saw something on the KS4 this weekend,
like the last four non-conference openers,
Kentucky has covered the spread.
So like they've been good in recent years,
not in just winning the games,
but covering the spread even on these opening games.
You anticipated my question.
I'm sure we'll be able to,
you guys will be able to talk about it more as the week goes on,
and I will too.
But, Drew, you think we cover Saturday?
You think we cover the 26 points?
I mean, that's going to require Brock Van der Groveh to be good,
and our offense actually to be clicking.
I actually looked at it right for the show.
It's up to 28.
I mean, I don't think they're going to have any problems with Southern Miss.
They were pretty bad last year.
they lost Frank Gore Jr. was their big player, big running back.
They added a quarterback from Florida State, but I still think it's Kentucky should win
handily. But the 28 points, just guessing I'd say they cover, but I don't know if that's one
I'm going to be highly invested in. That's a high spread for week one.
28 is a ton, and it's a ton for a team where, Ryan, we haven't even really seen the offense
play. You're kind of around. First of all, congrats on your Fred. You said Frederick
Douglas was going to get killed. How in the world did they win on Friday night?
You know, reverse psychology. You know, didn't want to get them thinking too high that we all
pick them to win. Somebody's got to pick them to lose. So, yeah, I thought Bowling Green would give
him some trouble over there. But yeah, Frederick Douglass won the game.
By the way, I think, Ryan, when we did, I don't know if we kept the tally. I think I got every
high school game wrong, every single one of them. I think I may have gone. I think I might have gone
0 and 6 because Graves County beat Mayfield for the first time in like 15 years and we all had
Mayfield Corbyn beat pipeville and then I picked those two games over the public private thing that
were easy like the Bryan station I think I would Ryan I went 0 for six during our picks this week
week down young sportsman that's just week zero of high school football there's a lot of weeks
coming up yet you're still okay I think I think Shannon might have to stop picking with my heart rather
than my head on these things yeah yeah I mean you
Usually you're the one who does well on these picks, but 016.
I don't even think I win 06 on Friday.
I think I was the only one.
Well, I did want to check in with everybody.
I'm here.
My little group starts here in just a few minutes.
But I wanted to check in.
Also, I wanted to make clear, Drew, when I posted this last night on Twitter,
there were probably a lot of responses saying, you know,
it sounds like this is the end of KSR.
I just want to tell people to stop saying that.
Of course, that's not the case.
You know, I was given this thing about a year ago.
It has five different weeks over the course of about three and a half years.
So my next one is in April, and I'm excited about it.
But this show, Drew, will, for some, fortunately or unfortunately, continue to live on.
I'll say fortunately.
Yeah, you've had this one on the books for a long time.
It does feel like you're in quite vacation mode because it follows the summer.
but we know how important this one is to you.
And you're making it back in time for the game.
That's all that matters.
You'll be here for the pregame show.
We can get everybody through the week.
And no offense to Ryan.
This is actually much harder.
Trying to understand John Jacques Rousseau
is a little harder than trying to understand Ryan.
So I feel like it is its own version of work here this week.
But you guys take it the rest of the way.
Thank you all very much.
Just a couple reminders.
Saturday morning or Saturday afternoon,
we will be doing the pregame show for
Kentucky Southern Miss at the bar.
I will be back for that.
KS Bar, we are running those buses this year, Ryan.
I know people have asked whether or not that's happening.
So I think Lex Tran is running the buses from the bar again this year.
And, you know, so we'll do the pregame from what, 330 to 530.
I think is the game, Ryan, at 745?
Is that when the game is?
Yeah, 745, but I think we're scheduled 330 to 530.
So 330 to 530, but then the bar will be open.
The game is at 7.
the game is at 745.
You're also welcome to come watch it there.
I think we may have come close through to tapping all of our kegs on that club blue light beer.
So I'm sure we'll get some more, but that's clearly been a hit.
But I will see all of you Saturday.
I'll probably hop back on at least a couple more days this week.
Good.
And I'll talk to you guys later.
All right.
Thank you for appreciate it, Matt.
That's our Clark's Pubbing Shop call today, right?
Matt calling in from Bailey, Colorado.
He was on the Clark's Pubb and Shop phone line.
I think he was our Don Franklin Auto call the day.
Okay, he called on the Clark's Puppet Shop phone number, which was 502-2-80-2287.
No, 859-2-802-8-7.
What I say 502 for?
Are we back to your text machine?
I see it in front of you.
Yeah, the A-Vision Glass Tech Machine.
I charged it last night, 502-735-36-80.
I hadn't looked at in a couple months.
People have been texting it even though we weren't using it the last couple weeks, Drew.
That's good.
When I got to borrow it while you were gone, that was a lot of fun.
I hope people bug you with that.
hit us up during the show.
You know, Matt, talking about football head and pregame show,
we are debuting a new format of the KSR football podcast today that I'm very excited.
Really?
What's that all about?
Well, with Freddie stepping away last year, we needed to bring someone in.
So I think we mentioned this on Friday, but Max Duffy is going to slide into that player perspective with me, Nick Rouse and Adam Luckett.
But we used to do it Monday nights on Zoom.
You know, everybody's Zoom at their podcast now.
But we thought we're better.
A little sillier.
You know, we like to get silly.
We're better in person.
So we're going to do it right here at this table at 1.30 today.
Okay.
They're all going to go to Stoops, get his comments at noon.
You know, he's got his first press conference of the day.
And instead of wait until the evening, we're just going to go in the afternoon.
So everybody watch for that.
We'll be live on YouTube and all that fancy stuff.
Oh, it's going to be live on YouTube.
Yeah, with Max joining us.
We hit a sweet spot because he has to get over to practice.
You know, he's got his big career over at LCA.
Oh, yes.
And then we'll be fresh off Stoop's first press conference of the season.
So you, Max, Max, and who?
Luckett and Roush.
Lucket and Roush.
All four of you.
As long as it goes well today, that would be our regular format this season on Monday afternoon.
So if you're sitting at work, you know, who's really working on a Monday?
It's true.
Maybe just turn it on, listen a little bit, then you can get through whatever you've got to do at the office.
But that'll be fun.
Excited to have Max joining this year.
Yeah, you mentioned Stoops has his first press conference at noon.
He's got his first coach's show tonight.
So, man, game week kicking off in a bang right now.
Well, I guess during the show, we'll get our first death chart.
That usually comes out at 1130.
right before Stoops goes live.
So that'll clear up any injuries we were wondering about over the fall.
I don't, you know, trip chain.
It won't be on there.
But, you know, there's some other guys that have been out.
Maybe they'll surprise us.
We'll get the whole two deep, maybe see some surprises at starters.
But it's all here.
It's game week.
Camps behind us.
It's week one starting today.
All right.
We'll take our break, come back list.
We want a lot of phone calls this week.
This is game week.
You guys should be excited.
Talk about the cats.
Give us what you think that's going to happen.
Ryan, Drew, Shannon.
We've got a lot to talk about.
We've got special guests coming.
up this week when Matt's gone. So join
us. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. We'll be right back.

Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.

Welcome back, Susanna Hoffs.
It didn't take you long to take over the jukebox.
Yeah, Shannon knows what to play.
Well, it's a manic Monday.
It's true, but you like it.
Ryan, Drew, and Shannon.
I just wanted to see if we would get that comment about the singer.
Of course.
It comes with it.
Walk right into it.
August is a big KSR birthday month.
My birthday was last week.
Matt's birthday is this week.
It's Wednesday.
Maria's birthday was Friday.
Chris Tomlin's birthday is today.
But guess whose birthday was yesterday?
Who's that?
Cutter Bowley.
Okay.
Richie Farmer.
Wow.
And that man sitting right there.
Corey P. Price.
Corey the Price birthday was yesterday.
Coming in and you celebrate your birthday with all your friends here.
It looks like Corey the Price.
We're in a Michael Bolton T-shirt.
What's the picture, though? What's the photo?
Is that a young Michael Bullden?
That's from, almost said, office space.
You ever seen office space?
No.
I haven't seen it.
Yeah, we'll explain it so you know the time.
Good movie.
859-2802-287.
That's the Clark's Publishout phone number.
We've got some calls.
Like I said, we'll take a lot of calls this week.
So, Shannon, who we got first?
Let's go to Cody.
Cody, go ahead, Cody.
Hey, how's it going, guys?
I'm from New Orleans.
I'm coming up this week to go see the game with my USM alumni buddy.
It's actually my first experience at a Kentucky game.
I've been a diehard fan living in Louisiana all my life.
So I just want to experience it all.
You know, come to KS Bar, tailgate, get drunk, have fun watching the cats.
You can do all of that.
Matter of fact, we can help you with a lot of that.
So thank you, man.
Appreciate that.
Enjoy the trip up here.
You know, I've had a lot of people, I'm sure they're reaching out to you.
One, they're getting excited.
I mean, it's game week.
Are the bus is going to run?
Are you guys going to do the pregame show there?
What's happening after the game?
You know, do you guys have Club Blue NIL beer?
You know, all these questions, people were then they answered all those questions is yes, yes, and yes.
And it helps we get a night game.
You know, everybody can get in that full tailgating experience.
They'll debut the new LED lights at the stadium being a night game.
I've heard a lot of stories, including one I just got on the text machine from Jay and Lyndon that, you know, everybody puts their tents out early.
I've heard there's been a little bit of moving people's tents around and shuffling over there.
Oh, really?
Already drama in the fight for the tailgate lots over there, which is, you know,
crazy that shows how excited people are, but some of those have been up for two months over there.
If you drive by the stadium, you see those empty shells of people claiming spots and I'm hearing
little whispers of maybe people moving them around to make room for their own.
Well, I don't know. How can you police it? You can't.
It's a good question. It's not the best system.
It's not crazy they've been up as long as they have been. But A, that shows that people are
fired up and you're going to need more room over there, but, you know, also going to have
a little bit of drama. Well, I was over there. It probably was a month ago.
and some of the prime spots already had their tents, the bones of the tent set out.
Those frames have been there since the beginning of the summer.
I thought there was a rule against them.
I guess we're turning our head on that.
Maybe so.
That shows how fired up people are.
Anyone that is driven by the stadium in months knows that people are already getting set up.
One of my favorite stories over the weekend was I saw the basketball team in Mark Pope.
They were building a deck it looked like on someone's house.
kind of did a little service project,
kind of a team bonding service project.
I thought that was really cool.
Yeah, they went to Hazard,
did something at the community cookout
at Perry County Park.
There we go.
Really the takeaway is,
did you see the picture of Pope
doing Ellsdown?
I did see that.
I mean, I know they're doing a lot of great work,
building houses, team bonding,
getting out of Lexington,
hanging out together.
But I didn't think we'd get a picture
of Mark Pope doing Ellsdown ever,
and we already have one?
Before they even start practice, he's doing LL's Down?
He was so anti-Hornsdown when he was at BYU.
Oh, that's true.
And now he's doing L-S-Down before we even tip off the first game.
I love it.
I love it.
But his first interview, I can't remember if it was on the radio or wherever.
He was brand new here.
Someone asked, what do you think about L's Down?
Because, you know, he had those comments about the Hornsdown.
He said, I'm not telling Big Blue Nation what to do on that one.
That's a good point.
I didn't expect to already have a photo of him.
Good stance.
I guess he's already gotten into that rivalry more than he expected.
too. And no matter what the video is, no matter what they're doing,
Kerr-Kriza is becomes the star. He like steals the show. He's a scene stealer.
Did it while he was, you know, building the deck, trying to hammer a nail,
closing his eyes. He's my, he's going to be, I think, a lot of people's favorite player.
Did we talk about his video where he went home to Estonia?
Well, no one. We did not talk about it.
And he was chainsawing and farming and picking mushrooms.
Would you know which one to pick without dying and picking a poisonous one?
In Kentucky and Indiana.
out in Estonia.
Yeah, it just shows what a character this guy is.
I mean, the team got about a week or two off.
Some guys went to Florida.
Some went home making the most of that summer break after they wrapped up summer practices.
But they put out a video of him from back home in Estonia.
I mean, he's just working on the land.
I was a little worried.
Do we want one of our star guards out there chainsawing?
Well, we had a champion chainsaw guy here, right?
Ty Winyon was his dad.
Ty Wyni Yard's dad was a champion.
I don't think he had a chain.
That was just the old back-and-forth logging.
Every time they put out something new, Kirk Crease is the star.
But he's the star of their golf video.
Anytime they do those videos where they're just walking in,
there's a question they have to answer.
He's always got a quick response.
I can't wait to see him actually play,
especially in that Duke game when he might be a little noisy towards the Blue Devils.
859-2802-287.
Who's next, Shannon?
Jeff.
Jeff, go ahead, Jeff.
Yes.
Got a question for you guys.
First off, I'd like to do a shout out for Kelly on him for bringing me on.
you guys so mark poke if he wins a championship would he be the first person to win a championship as a
player and a coach ever in college basketball danny manning did Danny man he didn't win one as a coach
did he no uh no one comes to mind john howard's not one one one could be could be maybe it would
be the first i bet corey price sitting there would know Cory price has a
ever been somebody win a title in basketball as a player and then also win one as a coach?
The internet tells me Larry Brown. Did Larry Brown win one as a player?
Maybe.
College.
Bobby Knight.
Bobby Knight at Ohio State and then in Indiana.
Dean Smith, maybe.
Corey Smith with the knowledge.
Corey Smith. Corey Price with the knowledge.
And he's not Googling it like Shannon does his answer.
I didn't Google anything.
That's why I was asking Corey.
That's a good question.
So there's your answer.
So he wouldn't be the first.
It would be the first, but one of a very select few fraternity of guys who ever do it.
Been a long time.
Let's make sure he gets it done.
Okay, guys.
Thanks for the answer.
All right.
Thank you, Jeff.
859-280-2287.
That's our phone number if you want to call and get a board.
We'll try to get a lot of calls this week while Matt is off doing his fellowship.
I hope he does check in every day.
Kind of tell us what the dorks are doing is their fellowship game.
We get a dork report?
Yeah, I get a dork report every day.
We need to get a sponsorship for it.
What's the report from Bowling Green?
You went and saw our Broncos.
I saw the score, but how are we looking?
What went down in the Douglas Bowling Green game?
Bowling Green first possession went right down and scored.
Deuce Bailey is a quarterback.
He's really good.
He's really good.
But then the defense on Frederick Doug's just shut him down,
just really clamped down.
So Frederick Douglass is going to be good.
They ran the ball really, really, really well.
But I tell you, the first game was LCA and Boyle County.
Boyle County is really, really good also.
Everybody knows about they got these two kids,
Quizzenberry and Brown.
They're their two stud, running backs, receivers.
They've got a couple brothers named the Driver Brothers,
senior as a linebacker, and the sophomore is a tight-in.
Sophomore's a stud.
Trust me, you're going to be hearing a lot about this kid.
This driver kid is a sophomore tight-in at Boyle County.
He's the next big stud out of this state.
You know, we sometimes hear about Ron Lemon calling a shot.
You told us about a seventh grade Reed Shepard one time.
You've had others.
Is this official a KSR preps endorsement here?
Yes, go ahead.
His first name is Seneca.
I think it's Seneca driver is his name.
He's a sophomore tied-in.
He's the next Michael Mayor tied in coming out of this state.
I mean, he's the best player on the field, and he's a sophomore.
Coming up in a few minutes, KSR's top 25 will hit the website of the high school teams.
Updated top 25?
Douglas might be getting a bump.
I might have pulled back the curtain and taken a glimpse.
Well, they play, they host Trinity this weekend.
Another tough weekend for Douglas.
That could be two verse three.
Could be.
Could be.
We'll have to see.
Bull County probably still number one, but it was a little one.
a great week of first games. My Madisonville Maroons won big, beat Union County.
That was kind of a little rivalry game over there. Yeah. Fun weekend. I'm glad the Broncos got off to a good start, too.
All right. Well, take our break. Come back. More phone calls coming up. 2859-2-2-287. Ryan, Drew and Shannon here on Kentucky Sports Radio.
T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay.
Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
All right, welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio, Ryan, Drew, and Shannon.
before we go back to the phones,
we had the question,
who won a championship as a player and a coach?
We got flooded with people trying to tell us,
Joby Hall.
Joby played in three games as a freshman
on the national championship team in 48,
and then, of course, coached the 78 team.
So I guess he counts.
We're going to count it.
He counts, even though he wasn't a big-time player,
played in three games.
He did not attempt a shot,
but he took two free throws.
Neither one of them went in,
but he was on the court.
So, yeah, I can't believe we missed that one.
So Joby played that one year at Kentucky, then he transferred to Swanee,
and then eventually came back here to coach, assistant coach under Coach Rupp.
Shame on us for not getting that.
If he's on the roster, it counts.
He's on the roster.
We have to count.
We have to count.
I think you're exactly right.
And the other two that everybody keeps saying, Bob Knight, Dean Smith.
So unless we come up with some other ones, that's what we're going with.
Did you say somebody said Kevin Olly?
Someone said that, but I don't think he won as a player.
He won't want to win.
I didn't think to look it up, but it doesn't feel great.
All right, 859-2-802-287.
That's our Clark's Publish out phone number.
Who we got next, Shannon?
All right, we got Myron from Minneapolis.
Myron from Minneapolis.
Well, well, well.
What's up, fellas?
How are you going?
Everybody on this Merry Monday.
How's everybody doing?
We miss you on a Merry Monday when Matt's off.
Yeah, I was like, man, this is cool to check in with the crew, man, on a Merry Monday, man.
So I appreciate me getting through on the phone line.
What have you been up to?
We've been doing yourself since you last left to.
You know, I bought some hokers.
Y'all know about these hokers?
You know about these shoes?
I'm wearing them right now.
Drew's got them on.
Tell us about them.
Let me be honest.
Nobody told black folks about these hokers.
I had to discover it for myself, right?
But I put them on my feet, and it's like walking on air a little bit, right?
Like, it's just different.
Like, everyone's like, try some hokers, and I thought, okay, whatever.
It's just a shoe, right?
But now it's just changed everything for me.
Like, do you all have hokers?
y'all know what I'm talking about?
Yeah, I used to be kind of a sneaker head, and then I bought a pair of hokas and having a little bit of back problems.
I don't need my sneakers anymore.
I got my hokas.
It's walking on clouds.
It's tremendous, man.
So, you know, I'm out and about just really kind of breaking them in a little bit.
But I don't know.
It's like I didn't wear shoes before this.
That's how it feels.
It feels like I'm wearing my first pair of shoes ever since I got these hokas, man.
It's tremendous.
Now, you were on the air with Matt before we were.
When he came back on hit from his trip, you guys did your Sunday show on ESPN.
European map has been fun to work with the last couple weeks.
Do you get in the same thing?
Oh, he's definitely a change man.
No, he had a good time, I think, in Europe.
I also think he's pretty happy to be back.
You know what I mean?
That's two months as a long time.
I don't know if you all heard the first show we did.
I confronted him, and I asked him to do.
directly if he's a spy.
Because my thing is, who else spends two random months in Europe other than a spy?
You know what I mean?
Like, you know, it's just an interesting thing.
And when I asked him about it, he laughed, which I didn't think was the right way to approach
that question.
You know what I mean?
He said, no.
Which usually if you're not a spy, wouldn't you just directly say, come on, man, that's
silly.
I'm not a spy.
But he laughed first, which made me curious about what he was actually up to over in
Europe.
So just a thought.
Sounds like something a spy would say, if confronted.
Exactly.
He mentioned your first show back.
There were a lot of sports topics that he didn't understand or want to talk about on ESPN.
And it sounded like he just took topics off the rails as he usually would.
Yeah, I think they expect that from us now at ESP.
Like if you all come to these meetings with Matt Maher, like the meetings when we first started used to be like, all right, here is our rundown.
We're going to talk about these eight things over the next three hours.
We don't do that anymore.
Like, people know that whatever they come up with, we're probably not going to do.
Like, for instance, last week, I made a comment.
I was trying to use a metaphor of saying, like, hey, that would be like winning a paid vacation to Tulsa, Oklahoma.
I just threw out a random city.
I have nothing against Tulsa, Oklahoma, right?
We spent three hours getting calls from people in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who were standing up for their city.
And to this day, I filled in a lot of shows last week.
Tulsa Oklahoma people are upset with me because they think I was hurt.
critical of their city.
Like that's what we do on our show, and that's what we've been doing since Matt came back.
Yeah, he said you guys had your first meeting in like the first three topics on your
run-down match, like, I can't do that.
I can't talk about that.
I don't know anything about that.
We're going to talk about whatever.
Tulsa.
We ended up talking about Tulsa.
And here's the thing.
The Tulsa people called and they were trying to make their case why Tulsa was great,
and they weren't doing a great job.
Like they kept saying, like, we have more man-made lakes than they.
anybody in America, which I don't know if that's true.
You know what I mean? Midwest people make things up.
I'm in the Midwest.
You know what I mean?
So like Midwest people always say we have the most this.
And you can never verify it or not.
But like Tulsa people were just, they weren't doing a great job of trying to prove
that their city would be a good vacation spot.
We have the biggest manmade lake in Kentucky, so they're liars.
But with it being week one, week one college football.
I won't.
Don't tell that.
They'll build one to beat you.
That's how passionate they are.
They'll go build a new one right now.
We don't want any smoke with Tulsa.
We have enough issues on this show as it is.
With football being here, though, I know you're a basketball guy,
but you have a merry message for Kentucky fans
as we finally lock in with Southern Miss Week
and getting excited to kick it off at Kroger Field in a few days?
Well, I'm just excited.
I mean, I'm a basketball guy, but I'm a college football junkie.
So, I mean, I just love...
everything that's ahead.
I think, you know, the SEC is going to be so tough.
You add Oklahoma in Texas.
But, you know, I also think that, you know,
this is a situation where if the quarterback spot is legit,
I think the defense and having some of the talent they have there with Kentucky,
I think they can be a solid team, man.
But I think the SEC is so good that a good team is not going to look like a good team.
Like, they're going to be a couple teams like that.
You know what I mean?
Whereas I've always said, you put Kentucky in the Big Ten, let's say,
and you give them Minnesota schedule, it'd be a whole different situation.
I'm looking forward to seeing, man, what happens.
Speaking of basketball, you know, you broke the story here on this radio show
that UK was going to play your alma mater, Minnesota State, in an exhibition game.
Now, we didn't know at the time.
Didn't know at the time the other exhibition game was going to be against my alma mater,
Kentucky Wesleyan.
So our schools might coming into the big.
Yeah, you were trash talking, man.
And then people were saying, did your school win a bunch of national championship?
That's what people were telling me.
Yeah, Kentucky Wesleyan, see, we've got eight national titles.
I don't know if Minnesota State has ever made it into the playoffs.
But are you the reigning champion?
Because we have the ring now, which is what matters.
So I don't know when you won.
But we have the current one.
We have the one that people are talking about now.
And we won in women's basketball, too.
No, that's never been done.
I think we should have Kentucky Wesley in Minnesota State meet in the middle, like where,
and like Peoria, Illinois or somewhere and let them play them out.
We'll meet you at the park after the game in Kentucky.
We don't need neutral locations.
Go find the best playground in Kentucky.
We'll meet you there.
That's how we are.
We'll play anybody anywhere.
You know what I mean?
Are you coming to Kentucky?
Are you coming down here for that game?
I'm going to come.
I'm going to come down for that game.
And I actually hooked up the team.
I reached out and got them connected to Matt.
So they're going to go to Cash Bar before the game.
So I hope everybody treats them well and treats them right.
By the way, does Mark Pope know that for an exhibition you don't have to play the defending national champion in Division 2?
You can play like a team that's not that good, right?
Because they're going to fight.
They're not going to beat Kentucky.
but they're going to put up a fight probably for a little bit.
That's the kind of challenge Kentucky needs in those early games.
You got Duke on November 12th.
We'd love to be battle tested by your fighting Mavericks.
Mavericks.
Yeah, Mavericks.
How did you pull that out?
It's the Mavericks of Mancato.
Yeah, no, we've got a lot of purple stuff.
You'll see our purple.
We'll be there.
Is that for Prince?
Is that a nod to Prince, the blouses?
You know, it's not.
So we changed it.
It was Minnesota.
It was Minnesota State University.
came after, remember the show Coach?
Yeah, oh yeah, yeah.
So they became Minnesota State.
That was the fictional school.
Right.
Well, that was a great branding opportunity for us.
We embraced it, became Minnesota State.
It had been Mancato State before that.
Yeah.
So we took the TV show and it helped us out.
Well, you know, Wesleyan's purple too.
So we're purple and you guys are purple coming in.
Yeah, but your purple isn't sexy.
We got like a real cool, smooth purple that you can wear to the club.
Y'all got funeral purple.
That's what y'all got.
You know, when people wear it, like, the corside,
it's not the same purple, man.
I'm telling you.
I've seen it.
When is your big Mark Pope expose coming out?
Soon.
I mean, I'm actually spending the whole last two weeks just working on it.
And expose sounds bad because there's nothing to make it at Expoise at this point.
He hasn't played a game yet.
You know what I mean?
So, but it'll be out, I think, before the season at some point.
So, yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
By the way, I have to talk to you to
about it. I want to talk to you guys about it, too.
I want to be honored.
And one of your last conversations with us on Mary Mondays,
you were telling us how Pope was all business at the Peach Jam,
sitting up there at the front with his notebook.
Since we've talked to you, he's added Malikow Marino,
and they're in a good spot with Jasper Johnson,
who's going to announce at the end of this week.
What do you think about Pope kind of saying hush to his critics
about the recruiting around here early on, too?
I have never seen somebody go from the day he was hired and the backlash that was unfolding on social media.
And legitimately, people questioning if he was the guy to where he's at today.
I mean, I just think he gets it.
And that's what I've been telling people, you know?
Like, he is doing the job.
And I think that to me is what stands out.
And I saw that at Peach Jam.
I think you've seen that, you know, with the recruits they've signed.
If they get Jasper, it's like, throw a parade.
because to come in and do that and to establish that this is still Kentucky,
even though there's a new face,
no one's had a more difficult summer than Mark Pope,
and I would argue that no one's had a more successful summer than Mark Pope as a result,
because no one's faced these hurdles again.
Here we are, and it feels like people have embraced them.
I don't know how he pulls it off, and I told him that directly.
I said, what you pulled off at that press conference,
I don't know if anybody else could have done that, but here he is rolling.
You've got to give him credit for where he's at.
He is Mr. Mary Monday, Myron Metcalf.
That's a lot of M.
Mr. Mary Monday, Myron McCab.
A Minnesota State Maverick, too.
A Minnesota State Maverick.
A Maverick with the cool purple.
I can't wait to come in.
I'll be down there.
I'll be down there.
I miss everybody.
It's been fun.
Hopefully I can do some more Merry Mondays in the future.
Awesome.
Thank you, Myron.
We appreciate.
We'll see in a couple.
Well, about a month and a half.
So, all right.
All right, Joe.
See you.
Two months, two months away.
End of October.
still two months away.
What are you going to wear that game?
Are you going to be all purple?
Oh, yeah.
I did when they were here a couple years ago.
I wore all purple.
I said right behind the Wesleyan bench.
I think in this situation, you know, Kentucky's going to win.
They're going to win big.
But you still want to support your school.
It's their chance that they can be on the big stage.
So I'm definitely wearing purple.
Yeah, I agree.
When you're a school that, no offense, doesn't really have a huge shot at winning that game.
I think it's okay to wear the opposing team.
Matt wore a transie jersey when they played.
Anthony Davis.
I went to UK, so I always ripped from my alma.
alma mater, but I get it. You'll be fine in that one game.
Now, Kyle did not wear a Clarion shirt when they played Clarion.
I think it's a little different when you're the head coach.
When you're the head coach, it doesn't count.
All right, well, take our break, come back, go back to the phone line.
It's going to be tough to top.
Merry Monday, Myron, but we will give it a shot.

Person writes Andrew and says,
Purple isn't good for you, K.
The Purple Aces beat the Cats.
It's true.
Another one of your hometowns came in here.
Yeah.
It's an all-time KSR moment.
You and I did the show with Walter McCarty and off the air.
From Rupp Arena.
We were inside Rup Arena did the show with Walter McCarty.
Off the record, Walter McCarty pretty much told us there's not a chance.
Yeah.
We even on the air he said something like, look, we're going to tell our team, you know, don't worry about the final score.
Go out there and try to get better.
That's why we play a team like this to get better for the season.
And then they went out there and won.
Still hard to believe that one really happened.
It is very true.
That was against one of a team that ended up being good, too.
It was quickly.
Was that a quickly's team?
The year they got cut short.
859-2802-287.
Who's our next caller, Shannon?
Grover.
Grover.
Go ahead, Grover.
Gentlemen, a guy that will play on a championship team and then coached,
I'm surprised you missed him.
You aren't the name?
Well, we said Joe B. Hall.
No, Adolf Rupp.
Whoa, really?
Did he play on the championship team?
He played on 1921, Kansas Helms championship team,
the predecessor of the NCAA,
and then, of course, Coach Ruff, my coach,
coached four champions at Kentucky.
So, yeah, Coach Rupp is in that category.
I guess we've got to put him in,
Even though it wasn't the NCAA tournament, he won a national title, Drew,
so I think Coach Rupp also deserves to be in that category.
Yeah, we try not to give Kansas credit for those titles,
but for this exercise, if it can lift up Adolf Rupp, we'll count it.
But it doesn't count when we're doing the head-to-head with Kansas.
Robert, you created a little buzz a couple weeks ago
when you tried to kill off Dan Issel.
Well, that was a false, farce.
And I apologize.
Dan and our teammates from Kentucky.
and I apologize to Dan and Sherry.
And they said,
those things happen.
But Dan is three years older than me,
and he's in excellent health.
And, you know,
I'm Mia Coppogue,
which is the Latin means I screwed up.
But, you know,
I certainly don't wish any ill health on Dan Hensel.
Very well said, Grover.
And trust me,
from a guy that screws up every day,
I get what you're coming from.
It happens.
So all right, buddy, good to hear from you.
Thanks for the phone call.
859-9-2-802.
287.
Shane, we got another one on before we have to take our break.
Who we got next?
Mike.
Mike, go ahead, Mike.
Hey, good morning.
It's Mike from Louisville.
Hey, Mike.
Hey, most of the polls that I'm seeing for the SEC quarterbacks this year
show Vandergriff at the bottom, or near the bottom, I should say, at least in the last four.
Why do you think that is?
Do you think it's just because he's such an unknown being behind
the other quarterbacks at Georgia.
Why do you think he's ranked so low this year?
Appreciate phone call.
He answered the question because he's unproven.
He has zero collegiate starts under his belt.
He's a new commodity so nobody knows what to judge him on.
Yeah, I wouldn't expect it to be very high on any list,
but there's some that have like South Carolina's rolling out sellers
who's barely played any football.
There's a few other transfers that are also a little unproven,
even though they played at a mid-major.
So I've seen some even have him at number 16.
I'll disagree with that.
But there are so many big names in the conference,
it's hard to put him much higher.
If he's top 10, I think that'd be pretty rare.
But I don't agree with some of them that have him dead last.
Let him overlook him.
Go ahead.
Just overlook Kentucky.
Overlook him.
You've got nothing to go out and prove him wrong.
Yeah, I'm looking at a list right now.
I'm not even going to say the site because they don't deserve the credit.
But they have him 16th behind Vandy's quarterback.
Shannon.
What?
I didn't do this list.
Do you act like I did it?
Peyton Thorne and Auburn.
Shannon.
Sellers at South Carolina is the one I really don't agree with because he hasn't played much football either.
But that's all right.
We'll see what the ranking is at the end of the year.
Well, I think he's a guy that's going to just get better and better as the year goes along.
He gets a lot of snaps under his belt.
His best football probably come later in the season.
As long as they can protect him, the offensive line has Coach Wolford back.
We didn't like the way he left, but that is a guy that's not a friend.
to raise his voice in that room and get guys fired up.
You've added two transfers to some pieces that were already on the big blue wall from last year.
There's no doubt he has, Vannegrub has a lot of guys to throw it to.
It's just can that line give enough time and then we'll have to get the running backs healthy after week two.
But he's got enough weapons at tight-in and receiver.
I'm really excited.
We always talk about Dane and Barry on, but Jamori Macklin, I think, is due for a special year.
And that tight-in room, if they ever decide to use them, they're very deep again this year.
And probably going to see a lot of two tight-in sets.
DeKale Crowdes transferred to Hawaii,
had a touchdown in his first game this weekend.
It was just, it was great to see DeKale back on the field,
and especially to get in the end zone.
I was so happy for that guy.
Lexington guy, went to Frederick Douglas, so happy for DeKale.
A big highlight for him.
That was fun to see.
Yeah.
All right, well, take our break.
Come back.
Ryan, Drew, and Shane, we got Mario walking around.
We've got to get him on to talk about what happened on last Friday after the show.
The KSR Golf Scramble.
Lots to talk about.
We want to hear from you, 859.

Last night, a blown call changed a

That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise,

He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
